The buffet was consisted of standard Americanized Chinese food, but it did have some nice, fresh selections such as the broiled catfish, mussels, clams, pork stuffed crab shells, and the bok choy!! Usually places that serve bok choy, even the authentic Chinese restaurants, don't use good quality vegetables. The stems will either be limp and very light green in color and/or have little black spots. The bok choy here was a vibrant green without any spots! Plus points for this buffet. The price was also excellent; I believe it was around $8 for dinner with a complimentary drink and free refills! The decor wasn't anything special, which is pretty much expected for $ - $$ Chinese and Chinese-American restaurants, but the place seemed clean and the staff friendly and attentive. If you're Chinese, they'll strike up one of those conversations with you that include questions such as which province your relatives were from and so forth.

First I live in Flagstaff but have mostly lived in larger metro locations where Chinese food is plentiful. We were unsure at first but have become a fan of this place. The staff is great and very attentive to drinks and clearing plates. The dinner buffet is less than $10 and includes tea/soda. It's a great combination of price, service and good which earns it 5 stars for me. Try it out like we did. Best Chinese food in flag

The place was busy but the staff was attentive. My family (me, wife, two teen boys) liked the food but it wasn't anything special. Price was good (and included a drink) and we would go there again.

Small but great Chinese buffet. Decor is minimal but pleasant and comfortable, the staff is smiling and friendly. There wasn't a lot for vegetarians, just the basic mixed vegetables, mushrooms, rice, and chow mein noodles. The egg rolls were not vegetarian. My non-vegetarian friend had a feast, however: several different kinds of chicken, beef, and shrimp dishes. He thoroughly enjoyed all of them and went back for seconds. The servers stayed right on top of refills for our drinks. We had the dinner buffet and the food was fresh and the trays full even though we arrived a half hour before closing, with the exception of the pepperoni pizza which looked like it had been sitting out for a while but who goes to a Chinese buffet to eat pizza anyway? The chocolate cake is worth mentioning - also not what I go to a Chinese buffet for but it was outstanding!

Very small selection of items for a buffet, green beans were hard, steamed fish tasted rotten, even the fried foods were horrible. Even our 3 year old wouldn't eat the French fries. Literally left still starving because we could only stomach one bite to try things. Off to find different food. Don't waste your money here :(

Sunday review: I think it's better on weekdays when it's more crowded and cheaper too. The "special" weekend items were the usual Chinese-American buffet weekend formula, and some things tasted like they were left over from last week. 1 star weekend, 3 stars weekday.

Of the two Chinese buffets I've been to in Flag, I definitely prefer this one, even if the selection is smaller I've been here twice and the food is decent especially for the price - $6.95 including a drink plus senior citizens or students get a discount. My favorite thing on the buffet line are the chicken wings. They usually are fried nicely and have a great flavor. The rest of the entrees aren't bad either - what you'd expect from any buffet I guess. Another thing to note is that the service is very friendly. The wait staff struck up conversations with everyone, and were prompt with refills on drinks. I think they love entertaining the toddlers and children as well.

Worse Chinese food I have ever eaten in my life. My suggestion: cook better foods and raise the price. I don't mind that, but afraid to try foods because the way they look. Not a good thing! I had a very bad experience

  • L P.

Can't beat the selection and quality for the price. No, it's not a 5 star Chinese restaurant but it's affordable, food is good, service is on the ball and it's usually open on holidays. We eat there regularly and never had a problem. Typical Americanized dishes but still yummy. Good bang for the buck!

Good Deal! for $6.50 (including drinks) its an all you can eat buffet and the food is fresh and delicious! The service was outstanding, did not have to ask for refills on our drinks and they had a good variety of food.

I was there on 11/23/10 which is a Tues., at about 2:20 pm. I hadn't been there for about 9 months maybe a year, because I think it's been steadily going downhill since I started going there 6 yrs ago. Anyway, I paid, was seated , I went and got a plate of food, most of the food pans were practically empty of the items I like. The lo mein I dug to the bottom so I would get hot food. The sesame chicken was very gluey, the Mongolian beef was cold as were the lo mein noodles and the noodles tasted flat no flavor at all. I had 2 bites and said that's it I'm not doing this anymore. I went up and politely asked for a refund. Needless to say they didn't want to give me one. We went round and round then the owner showed up and she said I know you you come all time. I said yes once in awhile. Then she said but you been here long time eating. No I haven't ,I have only been here about 10 min. and most of that was waiting here for a refund! No she said cashier say you been here for an hour. Oh no I have not! They were going by the time on the receipt which was wrong! It was a full hour behind so it did look like I had been there for an hour. The owner even ran her credit card thru the credit card machine to show me it was correct but she wouldn't show me what it said because it was wrong!I said ask the guy that seated me! She kept telling me not to yell, I said I'm sorry but I am very upset! Anyway it got a little heated ,I called the cops. The guy that seated me finally came back and heard what was being said and he said No, she just got here! I said "THANK YOU!" Yes I just got here! Finally the owner handed me back $7.75 and sort of aplogized, I told her don't worry I won't ever be back. I went outside to wait for the cops and she finally showed up 10 min. after it was over. I told her they finally gave me my money back and briefly explained what the problem was. She ok as long as it's resolved and we left. I will go to the Mongolian Grill on Milton at the Y of Rt 66. They are a little more and your drink isn't included but the food is better.

I am from Los Angeles and often eats in Alhambra ( a chinese town in Los Angeles County) and the food here is awesome. It is even alot better than the average chinese food places around the area where i live. I ate there during dinner and it cost me $7.99 plus tax for a dinner buffet and i had a card for 10% off which cuts down our bill by a dollar since there were two of us

  • Brock E.

Consistent each time we are up here from Phoenix. Decent american style chinese, super cheap $7.99 for dinner including drink, and all you can eat. Im a fan.

Good Buffet, pretty basic, the same usual chinese food. Service was quick and our drinks were kept full. This place is better than Lu Mandarin. It was packed with the locals so this tells you that it is a strong preference than other buffet. They had a rough time keeping up with the demand. Price was reasonable, lots of parking and easy to find that is close to the I-40. On our way to the grand canyon and spent the night here at the marriot so we had 2 families of 6 of us and it was perfect, fast and everyone got to choose there own preference. I was full when I left and pretty content and a bit gassy. I would go again when I am in the area.

I don't know why this only has 3.5 stars on yelp...the food is fresh and the variety is better than any Chinese buffet I've been to for $9. I'm surprised to find such decent Chinese food, especially in a buffet, in Arizona.

    (5)
  • Louis F.

This buffet is high quality for the price--which is incredibly low at just over $9--and also includes a free drink. We arrived 1 hour from closing time and the food was still hot and continually being switched out. I would recommend the garlic green beans and the jalapeño chicken among other things. We were slightly disappointed with fried rice and lo mein, but overall, I would recommend this to any travelers passing through Flagstaff--as we were--and return for more of their delicious, cheap eats.

  • Jian C.

Let's face it, flagstaff is no San Francisco. So the expectation from us was quite low. We were looking for some serviceable foods to fill our stomachs. Well, we were pleasantly surprised. The selection is not bad. And the taste is better than most Chinese buffets targeting locals. And did I even mention it costs less than $10 per person including tax? And senior and children got discount. So 3 stars for the price to quality ratio. And considering its location, only 4 stars is fair.

  • Ronald S.

Good place to eat, nothing special, typical Chinese buffet, standard music playing. They need to update the decor, place looks like it is in need of some TLC. The food was okay, nothing to complain about, but nothing to throw a party over. Prices were pretty good for 2 kids and 2 adults. Bottom line: Look up "standard Chinese buffet", you'll see a picture of this place.

  • Misty M.

Stopped in on a road trip and should've walked right back out. Against my better judgment we stayed and ate. The food was cold. Everything was sticky and dirty. And I got food poisoning. Yes it's cheap but not worth being sick the next day.

    (1)
  • Marcus A.

Although there was enough to choose from only a few dishes appealed to us. The place is a bit shabby but hey, can't argue with $9 with drinks. So, good value for your money. The food is just as chinese as the McDonalds in Beijing.

  • Lily T.

Thank you thank you for opening such a good place at such a country area Me and fiancee were tired of eating burgers and sandwiches during our grand canyon trip. So we decided to drive an additional 30 mins from Williams, Az to check it out. Glad we did. Don't expect authentic Chinese food here. The population here is mostly white, hispanics. But all the food we had were fresh and flavorful. And pretty darn good. And you cant beat it at 7 dollars per person for all you can eat including drinks! And the waiter was very friendly as well This is the place to check out if you are craving for Chinese in the area.

  • Gerry K.

The food has definitely gone downhill here. We'd stop in once or twice a year, whenever we were in town or passing through. This last stop, the food was terrible. When the wife and I left, we looked at each other and said "Last visit". I even took the entry off my car GPS.

    (1)
  • Katie R.

We read the reviews and thought... Why not? We just moved here and we liked the idea of a cheap Chinese buffet, but it's not worth it. I don't know if I'd eat that if they gave it to me for free. The service was good. There was a tour bus full of patrons so we thought that despite the dirty tables, dirty floor and every other dirty surface, the food had to be the reason they came. It wasn't that either. Don't go. Your rear end will thank you later.

    (1)
  • Jun W.

For $8.99 per adult, this is the place to be for family traveling and don't want to spend much for dinner. Although it is a buffet, the dishes are well crafted. From soup to beef rib to desert, they have no trace of MSG, flavors are rich, presentations are beautiful. A high quality Chinese Buffet! The atmosphere could be improved, but the is the result of low cost. So, 4 star in this category.

  • Christina D.

We were passing through Flagstaff when we decided to stop and eat. This place had good reviews. Walked in and waited in line for about 10 minutes. A tour bus stopped in and the hostess stopped helping everyone else and started seating the tour group. It was another 10 minutes before she acknowledged our group of 7. When we were seated and went to get our food, it had been picked over by the tour group. The food itself was so-so. They had a small selection of food. The ice cream machine was leaking. And the bathrooms were filthy and stunk. If we come through here again, we will not stop here to eat!

    (2)
  • Cliff A.

It isn't a bad restaurant, just so-so. As many Chinese buffets seem to be, the decor and seating is quite dated, with nails in the walls in seating areas that have been bent and then flattened against the wall and painted over. There is no ambiance, just a big and kinda cold feeling atmosphere. It isn't a bad place. The food is good and they keep everything full. Not bad, just unremarkable. But when you just wanna throw down some change and fill up until you hate your life, then this place will fit the bill. ;)

  • Nan M.

Food was not hot. "Hot & sour" soup was "barely warm & sour", but had good flavor. Sesame chicken was dry, meat was stringy, warm, not hot. Sweet & sour chicken was cold, tough. Pork was all gristle & bone. Not edible. Chicken on a stick was dried out. Mongolian beef was good, too many onions. Fried mushrooms were good. The beans were good. Ice cream was good, but only vanilla was working. Best thing was the pepperoni pizza. Imagine that! Finally, after we were full, found the salad by the dessert. Our server did a great job, very attentive. Reasonable price.

  • Kathy J.

Stopped in here cuz we grabbed a 10% off coupon at the Flagstaff visitor center. They no longer accept them. Not a huge selection, but was pleasantly surprised. Wasn't too sure with the price being only $8.79 per person, beverage included. Food was hot, fresh. Soups were good. Not much choice for salads and desserts. Again, for the price, better than expected.

This was by far the worst meal we have ever had. We were apprehensive walking in but trusted previous Yelp reviews that it would be edible. The restaurant was dirty, rundown & disgusting. The food was no better. I always use Yelp but rarely leave reviews but I felt obligated so no one else wastes their time or money eating here. Not even worth the $8.

  • Christa D.

Not at all impressed. Staff was extremely rude. Waitress was horrible. Food was nothing to brag about. Should've gone to golden arches for cheaper dinner and better quality.

Went there for Christmas. It was one of a very few places open. It was a buffet restaurant that had very tasty foods. The price was great and the staff were very attentive, and pleasant. This place exceeded my expectations. A+!

I've actually been here quite a lot during my college years. This is known as one of the best buffet places in Flagstaff. I guess you can say that. If you LOVE Chinese food. This is the place for you. It's a chinese buffet! Lots of chinese food for you to try. It's actually pretty good. I think its around $8 when I went, show your NAU ID and you get a 10% discount. Sweet deal! You have to pay before you eat. They always have the food bar filled. The staff are really nice there. You get fortune cookies after your done. Interesting...

  • Pete B.

This is one of my favorite Chinese Buffet, I have been to many others. They are always pretty busy, and the food is always fresh. I love the Sweet and Sour Chicken especially, but everything they have is good. Prices are reasonable.

  • Laurel H.

I am giving just one star not cuz the food, it's about the service attitude!!! My friends and I are traveling to this city and want to find Chinese food! The food is good here! However, they support that pay first so that when we finished, we would like to give some tips! However, we didn't have cash and we already paid before! Therefore, we asked someone to bring our receipt copy to put some tips, but we waited for a long time so that we just wanted to ask cashier! However, when we left our table, the waiter said bad words to us!!!

Came here for a bite to eat after visiting the Grand Canyon. Giving this place 4 stars because there wasn't much variety. But, I guess that also meant that the food that they did have they paid extra attention to. We came during dinner time, and I can say there were customers coming every ten minutes! The food was always hot and plentiful. I must say, our waiter was really amazing! He came and got our plates and refilled our drinks in such an efficient manner, I was really impressed. He even greeted us with a huge smile, which was really nice to know we were welcomed and made our overall experience great. :)

Another bad and overdone chinese food place. I would recommend Panda Express for better chinese food or elsewhere in town.

Not bad. I wanted some good Chinese and China Star was able to deliver - not literally, I had the buffet. The selection isn't huge, but compared to other Chinese buffets, the price is right. Overall, not great, not terrible. Will probably return when my dad visits.

After almost three year of living in Flagstaff and eating at the other Chinese buffet place in town when I was craving Chinese, I finally decided to eat. I am now kicking myself because this is the better of the two in town. The staff here is much friendlier. We were greeted right away and the people at the front all had smiles on their faces. They understand my group's drink selections and where we preferred to sit. Throughout the meal the waitress always made sure that are drinks were filled and to collect finished plates at the table. She even asked a few times how we were doing. The other chinese buffet, throughout my years of eating there, never asked that. The food selection is much smaller compared to most other chinese buffets. But with that they prepare for their food and it taste great. I appreciated seeing the constant cleaning that was done around the food. The plates, silverware, and bowls were all clean. Lastly, the price of the buffet is the cheaper of the two in town. My only suggestion to China Star is to update the interior design (IE booths, tables) as it looks old. Other than that, I am glad to say I ate here and will be eating here every time I want Chinese buffet in Flagstaff.

Good cheap chinese food. About $9 for dinner pp. Our chinese waiter spoke Spanish and was very pleasant! The owner lady is loud and seems rude. However after 2 huge buses arrived with tourists the restaurant did their best to maintain order and keep a lot of food on the Buffet.

  • Pam B.

My hubby loves loves loves buffets. Because Chinese buffet places are a bit of a gamble, I wasn't sure about this place...but, it exceeded my expectations. There were so many dishes to choose from and it didn't seem to be too Americanized. Authentic, tasty and clean. I'd definitely go there again. Come hungry or with specific ideas of what you want, otherwise they may have to roll you out or wake you from a catatonic food coma. But, that's the buffet life for you. Oh, this is also a great value, Lots of food for not much dough. Go for it!

    (4)
  • Joaquin F.

I almost gave this place 3 stars, but I got to thinking, as a whole package this place is a 4. Most of the food is average, but I always find a few dishes that are really tasty. The service is quick and friendly, most of the time when you get back to your table from a trip to the buffet your dirty plates are gone and your drink is full. Perhaps the best thing about this place is the price $7 and change for lunch and $8.99 for dinner, that is less than I spend at most fast food restaurants these days.

  • Lynn S.

I'm giving this place two stars because it was a letdown. It seemed so promising from all the reviews and we even heard rave reviews from the hotel staff but we found an underwhelming array of buffet items and a disoriented staff. When we arrived, our waiter didn't know where to sit us (4 adults & 2 children) so we followed him from one side of the restaurant to the other side for ten minutes until the manager intervened and cleaned a table for us. Our meal was continuously interrupted by a waiter asking us if everything was okay and clearing our plates before we finished. In any case, all this can be forgiven except for the food. It wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't great. We left feeling like they could have tried harder.

  • Josh G.

Chinese buffets are really the only buffets I will actively seek out, and China Star easily made its way on the list. Our server (at a buffet!) was amazing. He was actively refilling our drinks and the drinks of a dozen tables on our side of the restaurant. Whoever owns this place knows how to pick good employees. The food was just as remarkable. I tried many new things that I haven't had before and the food that I knew was just as appealing. For the price, it beats any other Chinese place here in Flagstaff. I don't think I even need to try to compare this place to the places I haven't been-I'll be back here no doubt.

Very decent place, like the atmosphere. However don't like the " Pay first" service. As a Chinese that has been in US for a while, I think it's a A choice for Chinese food in Flagstaff.

  • Brittany J.

This is definitely the nicest Chinese buffet in Flagstaff. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and there's a 10% discount for students. The standard dinner buffet is about $9 with a drink included. There's a large array of various Chinese dishes and the staff was always coming around to make sure that the food was stocked and that the area was clean. Our server always made sure that our drinks were filled and had our dirty dishes out of our way as soon as we were finished eating. The selection might not be as large as other places, but they still serve the most popular items that are found at most Chinese buffets. Overall, this is definitely a great place to go for some affordable, all-you-can-eat Chinese food. The service is great and the food is tasty.

    (4)
  • Mike T.

Friday was buffet night, so the China Star was crowded. We ordered off the menu, which may have been our mistake. The portions were large, but the food did not taste freshly prepared. The broccoli and shrimp was smothered in some neutral brown sauce, and the broccoli showed discoloration.

In quickly looking at the map for a good Chinese restaurant, this was highly rated, and I do know why! $8.50 for dinner buffet including the drink!! The food was great (for what is usually typical Chinese buffet food). The service was excellent, the waitress was always on top of getting our refills. Definitely will make it back next time I'm in town.

Lunch: $6.99+tax Dinner: $8.99+tax Soft drink included. Stayed in Flagstaff for 2 weeks and ate there for 3 times. I also ate at the other Chinese Buffet called Lu Mandarin Buffet. I will stick with the China Star without doubt. The food at China Star is 10 times fresher and taste a lot better. The hot & sour soup, shrimp, mushroom are very good. Great value!!

Flavor is great, fresh ingredients, attentive staff, pleasant music, and a lot of food for less than $10.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
