Rustic, quiet, comfortable. After suffering in 100-plus degree temperatures for a good month, a good friend and I decided we'd had enough. And so it was that we packed overnight bags and headed north to Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon state's high-altitude refuge from summer temperatures. Abineau Lodge, which used operate as the Sled Dog Inn, is the perfect escape. Though we didn't have reservations, the owner was close at hand and happily booked us into the Forest Hideaway room, which offered a second floor view into the dense forest that borders the lodge. The accomodations were rustic and comfortable. Expect warm, muted colors, a very soft mattress, and impeccably clean rooms. The lodge offers a few common amenities as well: a utilitarian eating area, a hearth outfitted with plush leather easy chairs, and a porch prowled by Ziggy, a very friendly feline. Entertainment addicts beware: there are no televisions, telephones, or radios available in guest rooms. However, a rather large television dominates the upstairs lounge and wireless internet is available throughout. Though I was mostly impressed, I did leave with a few regrets. First, the breakfast was a rather lackluster affair: two poached eggs with unseasoned new potatoes. Second, our room's thermostat accomplished nothing. Even though Flagstaff is routinely 20-25 degrees cooler than Phoenix, we still wished for a bit of cool air that night. We weren't sweltering, but one expects a bit more in the way of air conditioning when paying nearly $200 per night.

My wife and I have stayed at the Abineau Lodge three times in the past four years. Each visit has been wonderful. If you're looking for something a little more homey and comfortable than a hotel, but not quite as in your face as a typical B&B, this is the place for you! The breakfasts are always delicious and the rooms are clean and cozy with quality bedding. Some guests have mentioned the fact that the owner is not always present in the lodge. While it is true that Wendy, the owner, is not here 24 hours a day, she has always been very welcoming, pleasant and accommodating in the mornings and afternoons when we see her. Other times, her assistant, Lindsay, has been here to cater to our needs in an equally friendly and warm fashion. The lodge is in a small hamlet about 10 minutes outside of Flagstaff so is nice and quiet. My wife and I would highly recommend the Abineau Lodge to anyone.

This is a great place. The national forest borders the property. It is a quiet place. The decor is classy rustic. Tasty breakfasts are served in a nice dining area. Downtown Flagstaff is a short drive. Dogs are allowed on grounds.

Perfect for our quick getaway from Phoenix. The bed was insanely comfortable, the room was well-decorated, and the room was clean. The overall vibe of the lodge is very cozy and welcoming. I would have liked more control over the room's temperature, and the breakfast wasn't fantastic, but all in all a great find. Would definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed my stay at Abineau Lodge. It is about 15 minutes south of Flagstaff on 1-17 so the setting is a little more rural than staying someplace in town. They had a lovely front porch complete with rocking chairs that was perfect for relaxing with a good book. There are no tvs in the rooms but there is a common room with a tv and couches as well as a mini-fridge. I think if there is only one TV in the whole place they could spring for a larger flat screen (this was a 20" CRT) and free drinks and snacks instead of having to pay for them. They also have a little shop onsite with some wine and beer as well as souvenirs for sale. The downside of that is bringing your own alcoholic beverages onto the premises is prohibited which is a bit of a downer if you are picky and want your own specific bottle of wine. I thought the breakfast was pretty good, I am surprised that the other reviewers didn't agree. You can see the menu on their website and on top of that they have homemade granola that was absolutely delicious and some herbal teas and one of those fancy individual cup coffee makers that make yummy flavored coffees. You can't ask for much more than that. I also didn't experience the noise issues that a couple other reviewers mentioned. We were in the middle of the upper floor and I could hear some murmur of conversation in the evening or showers running in the mornings but it was not loud enough to disturb us. I think the fact that they don't allow young children to stay there is a huge plus and if it were not for that I am sure it would not have been so serene. The only real complaint I have, and it is significant enough that I deducted 1-1/2 stars for it, is the lack of A/C. The main reason I came up here to Flagstaff was to escape the Phoenix heat so I did not appreciate how uncomfortably warm and stuffy our room got during the day. It was a real problem when we went for a morning hike and then wanted to come back and shower afterwards. It got pretty warm in there between noon and four pm and with the shower going it was almost intolerable. At night, opening the windows to let in the cool night air was very pleasant but even then it would have been nice to have a ceiling fan at least. You need a fan to circulate the air and draw in the fresh air from outside. I don't know why there isn't a celing fan in every room; if you don't have a/c in the rooms then that is an absolute must. Overall, it was a great trip and a pleasant stay. I would consider staying here again... in the winter.

I do like a great B&B. This is not one of them for me. It's more of a sleeping lodge. The owners don't live on site. Doesn't have that " welcome to our home" feel. Feels more "industrial". It look great but not well built. You hear everyone else's showers and toilet flushes, day and night. Plus every door that closes. Bed was too spongy for me. No control over room temperature. I woke up at 2am too hot and no way to cool the room other than open the window or a little very noisy, inefficient fan, I opened the window and read for two hours until the room cooled down enough. Ug. For 171/night I expect better.
