Ordered the breaded halibut and mashed potatoes along with the fire roasted vegetable soup. Soup was hot and spiced well. Presentation was noticeably great. The fish was lightly breaded and flakey. Everything tasted great. Definitely give this place a try if you're in Wasilla.

Music is very old and loud. Dinner is hearty and filling. Home cooking here...not gourmet. Staff was super friendly. This is an old supper club vibe. Nice bar.

Great service. Solid food. Been eating breakfast here for years, sometimes lunch. I keep coming back. Can't say I've ever tried dinner though

Great food, the steak is the best! But we've learned to always sit on the bar side for quicker/better service. Our water or drink is always left waiting for a refill we never get when sitting in the front lol

If you want diner food drop in here. It's not great, but like they say "we feed you, we don't fool you." The meals can be a bit pricey but Alaska is like that... I consistently get IDed when sitting anywhere near the bar area which gets a little old after ten years, especially when you don't drink. However, the food is always hot and served quickly, service is usually pretty good, and the Big Valley Breakfast is more than anyone (I know anyway) can eat. The soda tastes like bar soda and the water doesn't taste so great, so get a beer or some tea or something else... The most confusing part of this place is it's name. WTF is it called? No one knows for sure. People in Wasilla call it the Windbreak. Some of the signs say Trout's Place. It also gets called the Valley Hotel. It's also called the Trout House and Windbreak Cafe?? The menus have some giant conglomeration of those names... it's this giant blue building on the Parks Highway... that's what I can actually tell you. What's the A&W part? I've never heard that one... lol

With a name like Trout's Windbreak Cafe and Bar you'd think they would serve trout. They don't. It is a strange combination of hotel, cafe and small town bar complete with red plastic booths. Our server was brand new so ordering and getting the bill was not exactly without mistakes. The food is standard American diner fare and pretty much average for Wasilla. In order to get a beer with dinner you had to eat in the bar.

Nice place to eat. Kind of an old timers breakfast joint. Good burgers. The hours are kinda short for the late crowd.

We tried this out instead of IHOP for breakfast. It is seat yourself! The waiter was very nice and helpful. She was quick too. Another waitress saw us trying to keep our kid entertained and was quick in bringing us paper and crayons without even being asked (AWESOME!). The prices are a bit higher but not unusual for the area, when the food came it made up for it. The portions were HUGE. We'll definitely chose it over IHOP any day. It has a 70's style diner with lost of pictures. The bathrooms are clean.

I ate breakfast on a Sunday in the lounge area of the restaurant. I just moved to the area, and from the street, the Trout House sign and building look welcoming and down home. And the service for the most part lives up to that. All the staff was pretty nice. However, the food is very bad. I had the veggie skillet with reindeer sausage added with a side of pancakes. I have nothing nice to say. The pancakes tasted microwaved and rubbery, the hash browns in the skillet looked like they came frozen out of a bag, and the reindeer sausage had little taste. My boyfriend had the corn beef hash, which he was pretty sure was a Hormel can of hash. There are a ton of great breakfast places in Wasilla and Palmer, so don't waste your time here.

Great breakfast! Huge portions, hearty filling food. If you want a big, heavy, comfort food breakfast go to the Windbreak.

I love this restaurant. You have a variety of. Hoi we from Alaskan to c country. If you have crow ds or relatives who are non-alcohol frame if mind, eat in the cafe. If they want a little liquor with their meal just step next door for mire subdue lighting with several televisions for the sport nuts. It has it all

Usually when I drive to Wasilla, I'm just driving right thru it. But after a good hike in Hatcher's Pass, I decided a sign that said "Big, Juicy Steaks" was welcoming enough to try out. The lounge part of the restaurant is quite spacious with booths decked out from the 1970s. The menu covered everything, from breakfast to surf and turf. Their steaks start at $20, so a little pricey, but the sirloin was pretty good with mushrooms on top. Service was super friendly and there were quite a few people dining. Must be a local favorite.

This review concerns the Windbreak restaurant, not the hotel or the lounge. It's really hard to tell what this is from the highway. The large sign says "cafe" and "hotel," but no name. But all the locals seem to know it. It's called The Windbreaker to them, but, as the waitress explained it to us, the owners added "Trout House" so that people would know they served fish. We went for breakfast, but we went at lunch time, so both were available. Great combination breakfasts, with French toast, pancakes, eggs, etc., if you want it. And very good, friendly service. It's a bump in the road, but don't miss it if you're around Wasilla.

This used to be the "go to" place in the valley for breakfast and often for lunch. But it is not nearly as good as it used to be. Prices are high, quality is down, and it is not clean behind the counter.

Clean, cheap and smoke free. The rooms are above a restaurant and bar. Register with the bartender. The bar caters to fishermen and wasn't loud. The restaurant is good with huge portions. The rooms are small but but very clean, they have free wifi and Continental breakfast. All for half the price of neighboring hotels!

My family and I have eaten at the windbreak at least 90 times in the past 10 years in Alaska and in the last 4 years now it has went from the best place to eat at in the valley to I sat with 9 friends for over an hour just to get water or a menu. When I went up to ask if they just missed us as it wasn't even full the bar tender told me to join the club and wait like everyone else. I went back to my table told everyone what happened and with disgust they said let's leave. The other 2 parties joined us as well in leaving as they had been waiting for over an hour for a bloody mary they said. I understand there is tough times when someone calls in sick or what have you but she could have just said i'm terribly sorry we'll be with you as soon as we can we are a little short staffed or something to that matter i'm a very understanding individual. But that was just uncalled for. The food seems to good always but the service is so terrible that I just can't afford to eat there anymore as I leave angry. Either will any of the group of people I brought with me.
