Why have I not been here sooner!? I have lived here for 3 years and found it on yelp and everyone was right. We had a sea food platter was $50, but it was way more food for even two. I had the rib eye so good and tender needed no sauce. The soup was beef wild rice = fabulous, the salad was very fresh. All and all it was very kid friendly (it was a weekday so not too many people) and worth more than double what we paid. We will be coming back many more times

This supper club was everything it should be. Great atmosphere, excellent service and delicious steaks. Perfect for families.

Talk about a true northwoods supper club. My family wanted to try something different this time around. We headed out to The Al Gen Dinner Club! We waited about 20 minutes on a busy Friday evening in September. The place was packed and we soon found out why. We all ordered the family style fish dinner which included cod, potato pancakes, cole-slaw, and many other goodies that I totally spaced out on. The service was very good despite a bit of a delay in refilling our drinks. We do plan on coming back here when we are in the Rhinelander area again.

Parts of the Al Gen experience are great. The ambience is absolutely amazing and a perfect example of true Northwoods supper club. If you are someone that frequents Oneida county, you should totally go at least once. If you are the type of person that thinks personality goes a long way and/or enjoys kitsch factor, this is an absolute must. If you're going for dinner though, make sure your expectations don't get the better of you. The food is not great and by not great, I mean that in general it is not good. If I didn't have such affection for the restaurant, I would never eat there. The fish fry is acceptable, there's nothing remarkable one way or the other about it. The fries on the other hand are pretty bad. They have amazing walnut bread which honestly is probably the best thing they have. We went on prime rib night and while it was a generous portion, it was poorly prepared and not good. We went on Sunday for broasted chicken night and the broasted chicken is outstanding. However, the sides that come with it... they haunt me. The coleslaw was fine and if you like over cooked, canned green beans, you'll be happy with those for sure. The mashed potatoes though... aside from being instant (and really, I'm not one to freak out about instant mashed potatoes, they're just fine most of the time) they were covered in what my friend called "a viscous liquid." I have never, much to my shame, been able to say no to mashed potatoes, but that all changed last summer when I encountered these mashed potatoes. This is the first year we as a group have decided that we're not going to The Al Gen. We love it a lot but it's very clear that the owners aren't very interested in serving good food. They don't let you go home hungry by any stretch and the prices are quite reasonable, but there just isn't a feeling that the quality is of any importance and when we only have so many chances a year to go out to dinner as a group, it seems a shame to settle for mediocre food just because we like the decor.

This is the place to go for the classic Wisconsin Friday night fish fry! Served family style. They just keep bringing platters of excellent food to the table! Everything seems homemade. Love the slightly kitschy cabin, too.

Had a great time presenting my research and photos for the Wisconsin Historical Society's Taste of Wisconsin: Supper Clubs event. Rob and Amy pulled out all the stops and gave us a sampling of many entrees: prime rib, ribs, chicken, fish plus a nice cheese/charcuterie "relish tray", and more. the panel included owners of the White Stag Inn and the Silver Birch Supper Club as well as a filmmaker whose documentary is coming out this fall. Leine's supplied samples of its beer and a good time was had by all. We want to go back to the Al-Gen for Friday fish fry, which is served family style. It's a beautiful little Northwoods supper club est. 1935 that has some great historical photos and artifacts on display. I have to give a special nod to the piano player at the event and the bartender, a seasoned pro who "came with the real estate 20 years ago" too.

We went for the fish fry last night based on all of the good reviews on Yelp. We were not disappointed. Yes, we had to wait for an hour but it was a nice night, there are picnic tables outside, and we brought some drinks out with us while we waited. The fish was excellent and, at $10.95 for all you can eat, a great value for the Rhinelander area. I especially liked the macaroni salad and the walnut bread. The potato pancakes were very good too. We all liked the fact that the meal was served family style. Our server was very friendly and exuded positive energy despite being towards the end of a busy night. The only reason I didn't rate the Al Gen five stars is because of their beer selection. Add a couple of good Wisconsin microbrews and I'd give Al Gen another star.

Went here with my family last night and were pleasantly surprised by what we found. I'd been here in the past for a fish fry, but this was my first time on a Thursday night. We arrived around 7:30 and were one of the few customers around. Judging by the clientele we did see, it looks like they mostly cater towards an older crowd, so we were on the later side. This is the quintessential north woods experience in my opinion, with an old cabin feel inside and outdated decor, but I love it. The service was great and the food was surprisingly good. We started with some onion rings, which were on the thin side but very tasty with a side of ranch. The cream of chicken soup was very good and the salad was pretty standard. The kids had spaghetti and I tried the half rack of ribs with a side of American potatoes - crispy, just how I like them!! I also love how a single order or whiskey is interpreted as a full glass up here in the north woods! I would definitely recommend the Al Gen if you are looking for an authentic Rhinelander experience.

THE place to go for a Friday Fish Fry! You'll receive all you can eat fried fish, cole slaw, macaroni salad, potato pancakes, apple sauce, marbled rye bread, potato salad, and french fries served family style. A Friday visit to the northwoods is not complete without a visit to the Al-Gen!

I was here as a destination because this is where they had the yearly event celebrating the "supper "club. This place had one of the best buffets ever. I've never seen cheese curds on a buffet. It's the only thing I went back for, even though I was stuffed. The other highlights were bbq ribs and prime rib. They had some really good side salads and chicken wings. The owners and staff were great. I got quite the education on the second thing WI is famous for.

Classic northwoods decor with charm to match. Nice straightforward menu, delicious food, homemade walnut bread and cheese spread. Thursday is rib nite and didn't let me down. Tangy sauce and tender meat. Wife got the filet. Very nice cut of meat but slightly under cooked from medium. Definatly a spot to dig in.

Yes, if you get to the Al Gen Dinner Club after 5:30pm on Fish Fry Friday you'll wait. If you get a seat at the bar, then who cares. Sit back enjoy your Manhatten, Old Fashioned, or Martini...;in a place like this you gotta have a 50s/60s style drink, not some frou frou schmocktail where you don't taste the booze. It's especially important as you sit there and check out the bear skin rug smoking a corn cob pipe (mounted on the wall above the entrance to the dining room) and...I think it was the puma (they've got a lot of stuff animals - hey, it's the north woods and if you don't like it eat at the KFC closer into town). Anyway, it's the atmosphere that takes Al Gen to the next level. The food is usually excellent as well, though we've had the occasional sub par prime rib. If in doubt, go with the baby walleye. This place has been there (with only about 2 or 3 owners) since at least the early 1960s and it's a classic for several reasons: bar, atmosphere, decor, food. Check it out.

Enjoyed a very nice meal last night. The chicken and vegetable soup was great. Many large pieces of chicken, fresh vegetables, and a made from scratch tasting broth. The garden salad was good, and we both wished that the breads where more outstanding. But the main dish (Baby Walleye) was fantastic. We each received 2 large filets that where lightly breaded and deep fried. For desert we enjoyed a seasonal treat of Strawberry Shortcake.

This is a wisconsin classic! A delightful, very old wisconsin supper club. Log cabin, built in the 30s - this place screams vintage Wisconsin kitsch. Bar was busy, even for a tuesday, and service was attentive. Be sure to grab a few drinks before dinner. Dinner service was outstanding, prices reflect quality and value. Complimentary crackers & cheese is a nice touch, meals come with salads or soups - everything was good. I had the icelantic haddock - it was a massive meal I almost couldnt finish. Taste was spot on delicious, a perfect Wisconsin fish dish. Others had the ribeye (delicious), the Walleye platter (incredible!) and the chicken alfredo (classic!). Absolutely recommended!

Excellent fish fry. Fish was haddock and was well prepared. Great sides come with it including cole slaw (excellent), fries (good), potato salad (fair), potato pancakes (very good), apple sauce (good), tuna pasta salad (??) and bread (took it home). Yes, this all comes with fish fry for $11 or so.

A true Northwoods super club where the locals go to eat. This restaurant is located in a very wooded setting but close enough to town that a person doesn't worry about hitting a deer after dinner. We went in and made reservations on a Friday night, but we couldn't even wait by the bar for a table because this place was so full, which was fine because the area is so beautiful we just went for a picturesque drive and short walk while we waited. There was a piano player singing by the bar too. We loved the family style fish dinner, all you can eat fried fish, col slaw, potato pancakes, apple sauce, marbled rye bread, potato salad, and french fries brought to your table. Usually I get my fish baked but I really enjoyed the fried fish here because the breading was light and the pieces of cod were so big. Classic log cabin ambiance with a very nice stone fire place make for a very relaxed dinner out here. We will be back!

This place is a cute log cabin. We waited over an hour for our table due to the busy fish fry Friday night. Once at the table, our dinner came quick. We opted to both have the fish fry. Our server was fast and came right out with their all-you-can-eat family-style dinner. The fish is a thick white fish with a breading. They also served us French fries, potato pancakes, cole slaw, tuna salad, potato salad, and homemade walnut bread. The fish was good but the side salads were heavy with mayo. The homemade bread was a home run but the potato pancakes were okay. The lady bartender was awesome. She managed to keep drinks rolling to the waiting crowd of 100+ people standing 3 deep around the bar.

The closest thing to a "Twin Peaks" experience in Rhinelander. It has a log cabin feel, small town hospitality, and great food....for fried mid-western fare. We had just got to town (work trip) and got a tip from a local to check Al-Gen. We went for the Friday night fish fry (that all the restaurants seem to have in the area.) We entered into a full bar and all heads turned...then, found our way into the dining area and were seated. The log cabin walls, multiple fireplaces, and soft lighting made for some good pics and great atmosphere. The fish fry comes with potato salad, macaroni salad, cole slaw, bread, and delicious fish. I don't normally eat fried fish, or fried anything for that matter, but it was a great experience. It's Friday a week later, and we are all going again!

I was in Rhinelander for business, and wanted a good steak, I went against some of the review and came here anyways. When I entered, the bar was not manned, but it was early little after 5:00 pm. I waited for a short time and the bartender returned and seated me. I ordered the rib eye, medium rare, it came rare but I tasted it any ways, and the flavor was so good, I did not return it. The breaking on the onion, I didn't care for, but it wasn't bad. But there was a slightly off flavor to the baked potato. The waitress was very prompt and attentive. I am glad that it was a smoke free, though you could tell that at one point there was smoking. With that said, because of the good flavor of the steak and being smoke free I will return again.

My family has vacationed in Rhinelander since the 1960s but we rarely ate out. This visit I was determined to venture out to a local eatery. We chose the Al-Gen Supper Club because it looked like what we were looking for - - And It Is! It was built in the 1930s and still retains that old supper club feel. It looks like a log cabin inside with a big fireplace and there are many taxidermied animals and fish on the walls. The wait staff was friendly and it has an overall family friendly atmosphere and is smoke free. We went to the Friday night fish fry. I'm giving this review four stars because although the supper club feel was the real deal, the food was disappointing. The fish they served was cod : ( and really not all that tasty. I noticed that on Thursday nights they have a baby walleye fry special. I think we'll try that one next time. Overall though, we had a great time.
