After living in Oshkosh for 25 yrs. and hearing about South of the Border as being an amazing Mexican restaurant, we finally went there. The place was very empty at 6:30pm, which threw a red flag in my mind. Seated ourselves and waited a while for a server. Finally had someone bring us chips and salsa. Then she took our drink orders, waited a while to get them. By that time we were ready to order, but when she brought the drinks she said she would come later to take our order. So we waited, then finally ordered, took an unusually long time to get our food. The food was ok, my margarita tasted like the pre-mix stuff you by at Walmart. Terrible service, I will never go back. I will stick with Durangos for my Mexican fix.

First off, the food and margarita were pretty good, which I'd rate around a low 4/5. I've had this place hyped up to me over the past few years and finally went the other day. The service was awful. I went for late afternoon lunch and there were only 2 other tables being occupied at the time. The sign stated to seat ourselves, which we did. After watching the wait staff walk by us for over 5 minutes, we asked to be helped. We were served chips and our choice of 2 salsas and bean dip (all were sub-par but the green mild salsa was the better of the 3). The food was served in a decent time and tasted good. I ordered the ultimate fajitas, which includes pork, chicken, shrimp and steak. This comes with 3 small tortilla shells but it's obvious you need more to eat this meal. I had to order another 3 shells and even that wasn't enough. After we got food, we were pretty much forgotten. We waited almost 15 minutes from the time we were done eating til the next time we saw our waitress and requested our bill. At that point, there was only one other table that had patrons. We could hear them all hanging out and talking at the bar (separate room). When we got the bill, I noticed I was charged $.99 for the extra tortilla shells. First off, there's no way you can eat this meal with just 3. Secondly, every other restaurant that I've gone to and requested more shells gave them to me without charge, so this was a first (and only) for me. SUMMARY: food and drink were good, service was awful. Recommendation: Durango's

Better than that other Mexican place - Lara's? Whatever. The food was okay; nothing stands out about it being particularly good or bad. What stands out is that service was a disaster. We waited just shy of forever for our check and then found out their credit card machine (or maybe phone line?) was down. They had no contingency plan for this and we had no cash (traveling for work, per diem, yada yada yada). After almost 30 minutes of waiting for resolution, my co-worker went to find someone to take payment. We left with a handwritten receipt and they wrote down our credit card number to charge it later. Thankfully it ended well when the charge finally cleared. We won't be back.

The margaritas were fine but after an hour of being ignored and waiting for our food, we decided to get our bill and leave. We were the only ones on the restaurant side for about 10 min then a couple came in who received their food about 20 minutes after ordering. After 40 minutes and no sign of our server, she showed up at another person's table, sat down and began to chit chat. I think that was our breaking point. We flagged someone down and asked for our server (who after dropping our drinks off had never checked on us). We paid for our margaritas and left.

Decent food, waitress Jaime was too busy yacking about personal stuff with a felony court charge to refill our drinks. Unimpressive staff. Hope her felony isn't a sex offense since I brought my daughters!

I was there on 1/31/15 with 11 close friends. We had gone in at 6:30 to reserve the table. They only had one table that could fit us. We sat at the bar for about 2 hours waiting for the previous party to excuse themselves. We were asked once if we'd like a drink weren't offer any chips while at the bar or a second a drink when we finished our first. There was no communication between the bar or the restaurant. At one time there was about 6 other parties (of 2-4 people) waiting on a table in the bar area when there were about 4 open tables that were cleared. The bartender was never told there were tables available. Once people did get their seats, they only had two actual servers working and tables say for a half hour before being asked if they wanted a drink. They allowed two people of the party of 8 before is to sit for a half hour with no food, drink, and their checks paid before kindly asking them to sit in the bar to carrying on thief conversation. Needless to say we left before getting our table. We waited 2 hrs to be seated and the service was so poor who knows how long we'd wait to get food. Megan ruined out night.

Service was great as well as the food. I have the grande chimichanga and it was gigantic. Grande was a fitting name. They even accommodated my request of both beef and chicken and it was good. Very good. And whatever they put on the chips was delicious. Wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Excellent service and atmosphere. I had the traditional chicken enchiladas and my brother had the ground beef, both with verde sauce. Dishes were excellent and well presented. Plenty of food. My brother and I grew up in New Mexico, so we like good Mexican food. Highly recommended!

It wasn't that busy at dinner time on a Friday which probably should have been a warning sign. It appeared to be ran by young high school kids who were inefficient and absent minded in everything they did. Our food took forever to come and when it finally came our waitress could only carry 2 plates at a time so the whole process was slow and annoying. They didn't check up on us very much. The food was mediocre at best. All in all it wasn't a pleasant, satisfying experience. We won't be back.

Service wait time is terrible. Use to be a favorite spot but will be much lower on the list from now on. Food is still decent though, hit up the chicken and mushroom enchiladas!

We waited 10 minutes before being asked what we wanted to drink. There was a table of 5 who came after us that ordered drinks and food before we were asked what to drink. They have 3 different salsas in which we got the green mild one, decent though not a salsa. It was really thin with hardly any chunks. Chips were okay. There is no queso sauce just nacho cheese dip in which we did not get as we were disappointed. My real fruit strawberry margarita was delicious. Definitely a plus and the part of the reason I gave them two stars. The food was okay. I got the traditional enchiladas with ranchera sauce which was okay though they were small. The refried beans were just baked beans in refried bean sauce. My date got the chipotle chicken fajita burrito. She said it was good and was surprised compared to everything else. Overall it was slow, and decent though I would probably not come back. :/

Family run, too many of them chit chatting. Menu needs updating!! My chips were like eating grease! The salsa was kick ass!! The bartender was young, friendly and working her tail off!! Management needs to redo menu and hire an experienced GM.. The place can be saved easily! But can't go on much longer like this..

This place has changed over the last two years. I remember when everyone spoke broken English. It was cold in the winter inside. Since the remodel things have gotten better. You can now understand everyone waiting on you. Good happy hour specials. My go to Mexican restaurant.

Awful service. My sister and I went last night, around 8:30 pm on a Friday night. It was dead, only two people at the bar and a few in the dining room. We seated ourselves by the window in the bar at a sticky table, and waited about 10 minutes before our waitress came. We both ordered raspberry margaritas, which were so sweet (like syrup) neither of us could finish. Waitress said she'd give us a few more minutes to decide our order, and proceeded to go into the back room for about 15 minutes. Food was just okay. She never came back to check on us, and we waited for our check for about 15 minutes until finally a man came in and yelled "Is anyone here?!" toward the back room, since the whole restaurant was empty and no staff to be seen. Someone finally came out from the back room and rudely helped him, as we had to call her from across the bar to get our check. Bad experience to take my sister visiting Oshkosh, will not be returning.

Took my son here for dinner yesterday. Funky, family run. Good salsa. Nice Carnitas tacos. reasonably priced. I'd go back.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
