I was on my annual trip back home to Oshkosh and my favorite place to eat is Erbs and Gerbs. I decided to be lazy and order delivery. They got to my hotel room in 10 minutes. That's right. 10 minutes. I was so impressed. Better than pizza delivery and healthier for you!!! LOVE THEM!!!!

I made the group I was with come here because A) I don't particularly care for Jimmy John's, which is next door, and B) I eat low-carb and thought I could get a lettuce wrap here (no, I did not read the menu online...fail). Turns out, nope, they only do sandwiches, and lame ones at that. I got the roast beef and picked the stuff off and ate it, and it was pretty bad - standard food service lettuce, tomato, and mayo, with a few sad triangles of meat. No low-carb sides either, just the standard chips and cookies and crap. The guy at the counter was less than nice about my low-carb dilemma, and the place itself is pretty cramped (maybe 4 booths and a little front area by the drink machine). I actually liked Erbert & Gerberts less than I like Jimmy John's...and that's saying something. I think I need to apologize to my group for dragging them here -- never again!

The staff always seems crabby here or uninviting. The subs are very good though.

Y'all know that I LOVE E&G. Read my review for the MKE location, and you'll know why. This is also why I am truly sad to write this review. This joint was a terrible disappointment. It should be stripped of his name and banished to providing food for grade school lunch rooms. Seriously, the dude making sammiches seemed to be under the influence of something. I brought two first-timers here and was ashamed of the food and service provided. He kept making mistakes while making the subs, then kept going back to the ticket, then checking what ingredients go on each sub... and not one of us asked for anything different added or removed from the subs we ordered. This is basic stuff for any E&G sandwich artist, even if they're the equivalent of a finger painter like this guy was. I got a classic, the Flash, which has been a staple of mine since 1993. It did not live up to it's name. It was a lifeless, hastily assembled cold mess. The dude that sealed the sandwich up totally crushed it... I had a one inch deep crease down the crown of the bread (the topside from where the guts are torn asunder). It looked like a keystone kop smashed it with a nightstick. We all got soup, but the dude didn't even fill each of our soups to screaming distance of the lid. In MKE, you get the full amount of soup you pay for. These ain't cheetos settling over a long overseas voyage. FILL IT UP! But the saddest thing was how long the friends had to wait, as this guy kept botching the subs. First he made a whole sub, missing the fact that they did the half sub with soup pairing, and he made a whole sub for the first person, then angle cut it but caught his mistake. He wrapped the angle cut sub up for them and tossed the other half. Then he made the same mistake for the second sub in a row, but did cut it straight, tossing the other half... but that wasn't all. He caught that he missed some basic ingredient in the first one and unwrapped it and added it, without any love for the process... smooshing the life out of it like it was a camper putting away a self-inflating ground mat. As we sat to eat our subs and soup over at UWO nearby, they did say that they liked the taste of everything. They said it was certainly better than Jimmy Johns. I know, that ain't sayin' much (WHEAT HATERS!) but the disappointment in their eyes was only slightly less palpable than the soggy egg dripping down my moustache and beard. Oh, yeah, and as Columbo would say. There is just... one... more thing. They forgot to give my friend his guts. After I told him about the cute Mr. Guts videos and such. He was hoping to dip Mr. Guts in his soup, scalding his little doughy body in a torturous sweet potato bath water. But alas, Mr. Guts went AWOL. *sigh*

I can't believe I'm writing a review for Erberts and Gerberts. But, when my annual trip to Oshkosh is coming up, I dream of yummy subs from E&G. I adore how they cut the extra filling out of the bread so they can stuff all the fixings inside, then they give you the extra bread filling, too. Order some soup on the side, and it's perfect for dipping in the extra bread!

I decided to Order some subs from Erberts and Gerberts last night, after a freind said that they were good. I got the menu from the website (still no online ordering in my area, a shame, but being worked on) and place my order. The person taking my order was cuertueous, and apologetic as they didn't have any wheat bread made (puzzling), I ordered and began my wait. About a few minutes later I was called by the staff, they were also out of the soup I ordered, which was really disappointing because that was one of the things I heard good things about. I substituted with little problems, but began to have a bad feeling. The delivery driver was nice, actually came faster then the expected time, and had my order ready. He called me outside the door, not being able to find my buzzer, I'm at fault for that though, Sadly what was most disappointing was not being out of the things I wanted to try, and the bread I like, it was just the subpar quality of the sandwiches themselves, barely filled with filling, my roast beeef sub looked like a piece of bread with barely anything in it, the tomatoes were aniemic as well, despite me ordering extra on the reciept. The fare was standard, nothing to write home about. The Seafood sub I had was pretty good, but again, lacking in the filling department, when I finsihed the subs and can of soda, (why a can, are bottles not more convienent? I just found myself underwhelmed by the experience. For the prices they charge, I expected better, especially with Jimmy Johns in direct competition in town. Not sure If I got them on a busy or hectic day (Tuesday) or the dissapointing food, but the experience wil most likely make me NOT order from them again. I will say that the lower score should't be pointed at the staff, they were awesome, and genually seemed embarrased that this was happening.
