Was in town on business and once again Yelp came through! Great place and awesome soup. I had the Ivan's Tika Masala after being informed I could try a tasting of any of their soups. The rice in the soup was a great touch. Too bad they aren't open on Saturdays since I'd go again before I head for the airport tomorrow!

TLC soup has the best soup ever. Everyday there's something interesting on the menu making it worth the trip. Whether I'm in an adventurous mood or need something traditional, it's all so good. I love the buffalo chicken soup, it's spicy like a buffalo chicken wing, the chicken tortilla soup is wonderful, and the french onion is a classic. There are so many varieties, it's tough to decide which one to order. And all the soups come with a big chunk of bread, so yummy. The interior is warm and inviting. I love the communal style seating, and that I can grab a glass of water or a pitcher of it for myself if I choose. The soups come in small, medium, and large. I usually order a medium, but if it's a hearty soup, I cannot finish it. There are no two bowls alike, which is part of the ambiance. After eating in the dining room, it's hard to order carry out because the bowls are smaller even though it's the same price as eating-in.

A co-worker took me in for the first time today. We got there about 11:20am, just as a line started forming behind us. They had a good selection of about 6 soups to choose from. I got the Veggie Chili with sour cream, cheese and onion. Along with a piece of gluten free cornbread. For $6.75 I had more than enough to satisfy me for lunch. It was nice and thick and full of veggies. I will definitely be going back!! Great little find for weekday lunch.

For quick, simple, affordable lunch, it does not get any better. Wide variaty of soups to choose from each day. You can always find one you will like. Nice atmosphere as well.

The readers of the Shepherd Express have spoken! The Soup House is the 2012 Best of Milwaukee winner! Why, you may ask. Because the food is amazing!

Great value and friendly staff (no soup nazi here) A bit granola in dining area setting. I asked to try the creamy artichoke & spinach soup since the menu said it had a kick, ended up going w/ chicken pot pie. It had lots of white meat and veggies. In contarst, my coworkers both had the house chicken soup with noodles, both complained lack of meat and what there was was dark meat. Would've given them 5 stars except my coworkers' experience and it's cash/check only

Ivan's Tika Masala. That's all you need to know.

  • Peter A.

If you're cool with waiting in a line out the door, your wait will be validated by some of the best soup you could hope for. Try their Tikki Masala soup. It's got a nice kick and is definitely worth the wait!

Final Review (3.5) There is an important update to make note of. The price of the medium has increased $.25 bringing it to $7. This is the make it or break it for me as Uncanny has 16oz soups available for $5 and they double punch on wednesdays. Both cards require 10 punches. It's just that I will have to spend $70 on soup to get one free. As a guy who cooks I find this price to be a bit too high. I wasn't entirely happy with the $6.75 medium but i would remind myself that it's quality, among other things. I have been here probably 15 times since the 8/14 visit to thoroughly investigate. The selection varies from week to week as does the quality. Personal taste renders things subjective but Soup house doesn't really have the market cornered down here (East Town). Uncanny's special of the day soups are often on par quality wise or even exceed in terms of actual product. There have been soups that the Soup House makes that lack in flavor. The chili, the Jerk chicken, African Peanut. They never really hit full stride. The reuben and the Tika Masala though are quite wonderful. The mediocrity though outshines the stellar options. Again this is personal taste i am sure. The fact that it's cash only, more expensive and of a lesser quality means that I have to knock it down for the overall final review. Of the three soup joints in this area Soup house ranks second above the soup and stock market but behind Uncanny. Customer service is good (3) not great(4). Pop in and compare for yourself. You may find you disagree with my assessment. You may overlook quality as you find the seating area darling. For me I am looking at food, taste and price then customer service. I have to go back to the original rating given on 5/22.

I ordered their french onion soup. Delicious! This is a nice place for lunch on a weekday. As other reviewers have said, bring CASH. This is the kind of place I would stop by on occasion, but I'm not crazy about.

  • Virginia L.

The vibe is good, but not quite as awesome as it used to be with all kinds of crazy plants. Same goes for the soup. I actually didn't like the black bean soup and I've never met a black bean soup I didn't like before... I guess there was an ownership change a while ago - maybe that's what I'm feeling. I still feel like it's a solid soup place though and will be back. I just won't be ordering the Cuban Black Bean soup. Oh, and another thing that erked my most recent visit: the ATM was broken and they only take cash - thank goodness my co-workers are nice.

  • Clif P.

The Soup House has good soup, and the service itself is pretty quick in & out. There can sometimes be a long line during peak lunch. The reason why the 4 stars is because the price is fairly high and they do not take credit cards.

We've been meaning to try this place for some time and finally stopped by at the end of our walk this morning to grab some soup. I literally, just finished a bowl of the Gumbo and had to Yelp about it immediately. Wholly. Crap. So. Good. Remember kids, its CASH ONLY. Run, do not walk to get thee some soup.

These are the BEST soups I have ever had. Period, end of story. I've been eating here for over two years and they have never disappointed. Their Crabby Shrimp Bisque ranks up there with The Packers, Sex and Beer. It is that good. Other notable soups are their House Soup (Chicken Soup), Chicken Pot Pie, Onion, Pea, Clam Chowder, Cream of Mushroom and Chili. The menu changes daily and doesn't repeat week after week. While those I listed above are my fav's, the also have stuff like Jamaican Chicken Stew, Thai Peanut, and Tom Ka Gai. They also have Vegan soups daily. You have to try this place. They now have extended and weekend hours. tlcsoup.com

Yummy and filling on a cold day. Great place to stop by for a simple lunch. I was visiting Milwaukee the week of 11/17/08 and visited TLC based on previous reviews. I arrived about 12:30 on a Tuesday, and they were already sold out of all their soups but their House Chicken noodle. Unfortunately for me, I'm a vegetarian. I mentioned that fact and that I found them via Yelp for my trip and the gentleman behind the counter disappeared into a back room. He emerged a little later and quietly offered some secret stash potato chowder which was delicious. It contained carrots, celery, and potato chunks that made the soup so fresh and tasty. They served it with a hunk of white bread and with my drink the whole meal came to only $5. The atmosphere is very casual with a indie coffee house vibe from the many houseplants decorating the place and Bob Dylan music throughout. All in all, a great place to enjoy a quick, wholesome lunch.

Wouldn't call myself a "soup guy", but stopped through today after reading a few of the reviews on yelp as I had a business meeting nearby early afternoon. Had the Buffalo Chicken soup... GREAT STUFF! Will definitely be back, especially on a cold winter Milwaukee day!

  • Carly K.

This place rocks - best soup ever! The only thing they need to improve is to make more! I get nervous if I get there after noon that they might be out of the soup I want! The place is always packed with a line out the door. Get there early! Check out the menu online before you go. Some favorite I've tried - buffalo chicken, tikka masala, cheesy enchilada, tortilla and french onion. Comes with bread or cornbread. Amazing...

This place is the best soup place in town. Formerly "The Soup House" I used to frequent this place when I worked downtown. Now that I work in Brookfield, I sure miss it. Wish they or someone would open a place out here that served yummy soups. Now I only go down there on my days off. :(

  • Rachel F.

Adorable spot for a quick/casual lunch in the heart of downtown! With ample seating and an eclectic + laid-back vibe, the Soup House has got it going on for dine-in OR carryout on the lunch tip. (It doesn't hurt that the soup itself is pretty freaking great, too.) It's simple, really: 5-6 rotating selections each day in various sizes, cash-only (they have an ATM on-site). Bus your own table when you're done. Boom. Tried the chili w/ cornbread yesterday; it was a solid, well-done chili to be sure. (I adde a bit of Cholula cause I'm a heat freak, but that's me. You do you.) TL;DR: Downtown? Hungry? Lunchtime? Soup House has got you.

  • Tonya C.

Now that I'm working downtown, I'm discovering the various places close-by that serve decent and cheap lunches. These guys are only open until 2pm, but their selection of soup in particular is OUTSTANDING! They have vegetarian and vegan options, as well as sandwiches, salads, and bakery. I inaugurated my fandom with a 12-oz. bowl of chunky chicken chili; the flavors were distinct, the vegetables super-fresh and not cooked to death, and the bonus hunk of sourdough bread made the meal perfect for mid-day. Having shown my husband the menu, he's now requested that I bring home quarts of soup to share for dinner.

This was my first time at this place. Staff is very friendly & nice (specially the older lady). I have sore throat and can't swallow hard food, so I decided to eat soup today. I searched soup places on Yelp and decided to give a try to this place. WHAT A FANTASTIC CHOICE I MADE I ordered Ivan's Tikki Masala soup and it was out of this world. I know I'm coming back. TIP: CASH ONLY

  • Josh B.

The best soup with the best people, hands down. 6 Soups everyday, you'll never be bored. I could eat there every day of the week, but I don't work downtown. I have tried all of the downtown soup spots but none come close to topping this one!!!

Descriptive phrase: cute boutique soup shop. The Soup House makes a downtown corner feel homey; no easy feat. It's cute, with mismatched chairs and tables scattered around a kitschy but not terribly comfortable space. The workers were very friendly, and seemed to be enjoying their job. I was excited to try their Chicken Tortilla, as it's one of my favorite styles of soup. $7 got me a medium-sized bowl, which was plenty, and a piece of french bread. The soup had quality ingredients, but it just didn't have much taste. I expect a bit of spice and a lot of character from a traditionally-TexMex dish, but it just kind of fell flat. Good but not great. The Soup House is a nice little place, but not my next destination. Cash only!

  • Jon B.

I wish we had one of these in Boston! Yelp led me to the Soup House before a meeting downtown - what a find! Friendly people, good prices, and a great lunch in a bowl. I had curry mango chili - a fantastic spicy bowl of beans, chick peas, veggies and fruity mango curry. A chunk of french bread and I was a happy camper. Nothing fancy inside - Formica tables and mismatched chairs in an old office space, but who cares! A great lunch.

  • Ryan S.

I've been to the Soup House twice now. The soup is indeed good; my latest trip I had the clam chowder which was tasty and hearty. My taste buds weren't blown away, nor was it the best clam chowder I've ever had (the base was a bit too salty ), BUT it was affordably priced and I left with a happy tummy. I appreciated the French baguette, though it was short of warm and magical. What I particularly value about this place is the quirkiness and "homey" feel to be discovered inside. I love the dozens of tropical plants lining the sunny windows, I relish the eclectic mix of art hanging about, and the assortment of 1950s vintage tables and chairs is nothing short of cool. The one department that was lacking is lighting - there is currently drab industrial lighting. A few funky chandeliers would really up the game. Bottom line: The Soup House is a fantastically quirky and yummy lunch spot with all the potential to become a Milwaukee institution.

Though it stresses me out that this place is cash only, it's worth scraping up some paper to get delicious soup. This place is pretty simple: like six or so daily soups, good ones will sell out from what I recall. They'll let you sample ones you're unsure of. Delicious food, nice staff. Tried the Buffalo Chicken Soup recently and even though I have never like anything buffalo chicken in my life, can't stop thinking about how tasty this was. Will have to menu stalk to see when it's back. Such a great lunch option! Large dining area, too, so great for grabbing a bowl with coworkers.

  • David S.

This a kind a weird little store, which is only open for lunch. It occupies a large amount of real estate and is basically self serve once you get your soup. Now to the really important stuff... The soup is actually very good. The menu changes day to day and usually has an option for everyone ( vegetarian, vegan). FYI, it's a cash only business so bring your wallet. The soup is relatively expensive, that being said it's homemade and doesn't have all the master stuff in that cheap canned soup does. You get a decent sided price of cornbread or sourdough to dip in your soup as well. A medium usually is enough for me. Worth a try if you are near downtown for lunch.

Every Tuesday someone from the office takes our orders for Soup House and it is always delicious. I would recommend the buffalo chicken soup on Tuesdays. Nearly everyone I know gets it-- so yummy! Topped with a slice of fresh French bread. I've never had a bad experience here. Quick service and consistent quality. Remember: they only take cash!

Top notch soup. Period Friendly staff and good prices. I would come here 2-3 times a week if I lived here. I had the tiki and gumbo because I couldn't decide and both were on point.

Delicious soup. Exactly what I was looking for within walking distance of the hotel I was staying at for business. I really enjoyed the chicken chili and side of cornbread. Very friendly staff, counter service, and a quiet, homey place that was a relaxing break from the work day!

  • Michelle S.

The Soup House is a counter-style lunch only restaurant full of cute eclectic furnishings and delicious soup. The soup choices change depending on the day of the week and the soups sell out, so go here for an early lunch! Also, they are cash only and weekday only. Tuesday is my favorite day to go for the chicken pot pie soup, but the Mac n cheese soup I tried today (Monday) was also good. I also like to add a half sandwich located in the fridge. Although the 4 or 5 steps up to this place make it a little difficult with a stroller, this place is baby and kid friendly. They have cute antique-style high chairs, booster seats, and a wide variety of activities to keep them busy located in baskets under the coffee table - children's books, coloring/crayons, etch a sketch, board games, card games, etc.

  • Bruce K.

The soup is fresh and as the lunch hour progresses, you'll see some of them getting crossed off the list. The gal in front of me viciously took the last of the Buffalo Chicken, leaving me with a difficult choice for second. No worries, though. The "House Soup with Noodles" was still an excellent chicken soup. Much like my wife would make! Large portion and with a big piece of french bread to scoop up the bits that your spoon can't gather! Good stuff! I'd recommend it, especially on those colder days that you Milwaukeeans tend to get lots of. NOTE: CASH ONLY!

My friend and I stopped here to get a cup of soup to go, and I'm glad we did. I have driven past the Soup House so many times, and I have always been curious about it. The soups they serve vary from day to day, with a fixed schedule for which soups are served on a particular day. When we stopped in, they were serving creamy tomato, tikka marsala, clam chowder, and a few others. It took me awhile to decide, and I felt like the woman behind the counter was annoyed by my indecisiveness, which, in turn, annoyed me. My friend ordered the tikka marsala, and I ended up ordering the creamy tomato. The bread served with the soup was fantastic. Soft inside, crunchy outside -- it was perfect. My friend really liked the tikka marsala, but I had mixed feelings about my creamy tomato. There was so. much. cream. I know, I know -- how lame is it to complain about the amount of cream in a CREAMY soup? But I felt like I was eating tomatoey cream soup, not creamy tomato soup. The parmesan crisp was really good, though. I'll probably visit the Soup House again, but I might check their soup offerings online before I go so that I don't feel uncomfortable if I'm indecisive about what I want to order.

I work right around the corner on Broadway Ave at Powers Jewelry Designers so it is very convenient and luckily very good as well. The soups are all made fresh from scratch and severed with either cornbread or baguette. My favorite it the chicken dumpling, tomato bisque, clam chowder, and the chili. But really they are all good. The family / employees are very nice people, and the environment is great as well if you choose to dine in. Get there early, and bring cash!

This place is uber great, but get there early. They tend to start running out of soups by 12 and then it gets a little thin from there. Now that you're rushing out the door for that hot, wet goodness, I'll say more. They do, in addition to the soups, pre-made sandwiches and sweet snacks. Adding a half sandwich to any soup is $2 ($3 on it's own) and they're tasty, albeit basic. Egg salad is very good. They also have cookies, brownies and fitty-cent hard boiled eggs. There may have been salads, but I've got a well-trained blind eye to those kinds of things. Someone will have to check on that. Their website lists the daily selection of soups, which makes for a conveniently fast exchange and easy planning. They are cash only, but $10 will get you everything you might need, with sizing starting at 8oz for $6. Lines tend to move relatively fast, except for the days that someone starts asking what's in each soup instead of reading it off the menu over their head. I've seen this happen at least three times. And not once did either of the ladies behind the counter roll her eyes and point up at the sign. Like I would've done. Great service.

Best soup in Milwaukee! It's cash only so be prepared. The atmosphere and the decor is awesome!

New menu every day - I'd recommend checking out their website before your visit: souphousemke.com/menu.ht… MY FAVORITES: Cheezy Potato (Mondays) - Creamy, lots of cheese, big potatoes, some carrots and possibly onions as well. I recommend adding some sour cream to the top. Buffalo Chicken (Tuesdays) - Chicken soup with a spicy kick! Beer Cheese (Fridays - rare!) - Wish they had this one more often. Hard to find good beer cheese soup in this city, surprisingly. Cheeseburger (Wednesdays - rare!) - Another favorite that doesn't show up on the menu often. I believe it was like the cheezy potato, but with beef. Corn bread or a french roll are included on the side. WARNING: CASH ONLY! There's an ATM inside if needed. PRO TIP #1: Most of my favorites sell out by 12:15pm. GET THERE EARLY. PRO TIP #2: Get the punch card for free soup!

First timer today and I'm way impressed! I went at around 12:30 and there was a line at least 10 deep. Service was quick and the offerings are fantastic. I like that they have an actual menu for the upcoming week. I had the Green Bean Parmesan. While I would have preferred a little more green bean, it was not overly beany, creamy or cheesy. I liked the presentation too - a nice sized bowl on a plate with a small chunk of bread or cornbread. When I'm not in a rush, it's definitely worth the extra two block walk past the public market. $7 for a medium bowl is a little pricey, but I'm OK paying a little extra for soup that's "premium" over the market.

  • Jessica G.

I went to the Soup House for the first time today. The soup was absolutely delicious. I had the vegan bean soup, and for a cold rainy day, it was perfect. However. They do throw in bread with the soup, French or cornbread, but it's kind of a wimpy little chunk. After a medium order of soup, I'm out of bread way too early. I liked the food, and the service was polite but not friendly, but $7 for 12 ounces of soup, of which mine was mainly broth, seems steep. I used to frequent Soup's On! until the day they closed, and I don't think I ever paid more than $7, and you got a huge bowl of soup with fresh toppings and a whopping bread chunk. I never left hungry. I can't say the same for the Soup House...not terribly filling, and overall, not really worth the cost. In the future I'll probably go the two extra blocks to Public Market and hit up the Soup Market. (The meat soups are probably way more filling...and worth the extra money. Maybe?)

  • David F.

Really good soup. Go early and bring cash. If you do a late lunch don't be surprised if what you wanted is already sold out!

  • Dustin Z.

First timer today, and couldn't be more pleased. The atmosphere here is a little...odd, as it reminded me particularly well of the youth center I used to frequent as a kid, but that isn't exactly a bad thing - just...odd. Soup was delicious though! Very good, close to a dozen options, different each day, all undoubtedly tasty! 3 size options, that are reasonably affordable when you consider you're getting fresh soup made daily and it's a rotating menu. My biggest gripe would be the water situation - a dozen pitchers of water on a table, I'm just not a fan of that kind of set-up.

Soup House is my go-to spot for lunch downtown. Well before noon, the long line of office workers out the door is a testament to the enduring popularity of this gem. The restaurant itself has two very different halves. The kitchen and service counter is textbook Manhattan-style: cramped and minimalist with not an inch of space wasted. But after you pay and proceed to the dining space, you'd swear several walls were knocked out to make room for a cavernous eating area. It's a homey collection of big old kitchen tables and rescued, mismatched chairs. Charming gewgaws litter the storefront windows, and the seating areas are cozy and cluttered with old novels and cookbooks. It's likely that you'll have to share a big table with other diners, and it's not unheard of to strike up a bit of conversation because of this quirky seating. Due to the overwhelming popularity, they have to run this operation a bit like a cafeteria. But a friendly Midwestern one; you won't find kinder service anywhere. An A-Team of four elite staffers runs this place like pros! Despite the workman-like service, there is nothing in the food that seems hurried. Every day you can expect five or six amazing soups, all homemade. Often there's more than one vegan option, a true rarity in this town. And all the soups feature real ingredients and slow cooking; no giant vats of synthesized cream or Sysco nonsense here. You get a choice of cornbread or a slab of French loaf as well. They have a fridge full of sandwiches, but I have yet to try one over the world-class soup here. Best soups (so far) are: Cajun seafood gumbo, Pabst and pork, clam chowder, house chicken rice, and their amazing Indian masala Pass on these two: asparagus, French onion So do yourself a favor: get over to Soup House next time you're downtown. Be warned that Soup House is cash only, so hit an ATM and get there early - the best soups sell out fast!

I ate here a few times when I was working in town last summer, but now that I'm here in MKE permanently, I felt it was time for a review. This place is one block from my office, and the perfect place for lunch -- especially on a dreary, rainy day like today. Get here before noon if you can, because, as others have mentioned, soups start to sell out and the line will run out the door. The decor is wonderfully quirky and relaxed, just like as if you were sitting at grandma's kitchen table. I had the squash-peanut soup today. It wasn't as filling as some other things typically on the menu (like chili or gumbo), but it was definitely delicious! I love anything with butternut squash in the fall, and the peanut gave it a nice thai-influenced kick. It was also vegan, if that's important to you (I'm definitely a carnivore, but I do think it's great that they provide veggie and vegan options every day). Bottom line: this is an unpretentious, laid-back place that offers a simple menu of hot, delicious soups. I'll be a regular customer in no-time.

  • Bryce M.

The soup was good but nothing near what I expected from the Yelp reviews. Price seemed a little high for what you got. NOTE: This place sells out of soup VERY early (they said around noon most days). Also, note that it closes at 2pm

  • Irene T.

I miss this place now that I don't live in Milwaukee anymore, especially on cold-weather days like today. I loved the quirkiness, the plants in the windows, the staff who were always welcoming and efficient at the same time. Many of their soups are very good, but my favorites were Ivan's Tikka Massala and Spicy Tomato: the first one is comforting, the second one has real depth of flavor as well as a nice spicy kick. I always made sure to have one or two containers of their frozen soups in my freezer as the perfect solution for when I'd find the fridge empty or didn't feel like cooking. Tip: get their cornbread, rather than their French bread.

After being ditched by a few of my coworkers and feeling so sick from the previous night's debauchery, I decided, what better remedy for a hangover than a nice bowl of soup? I found this place on Yelp and decided that it was close enough for me to walk so i went for it. I walked in and thought "awwww... how quaint and cute" They had a bunch of great sounding soups but almost all of them were heavy and creamy. As I looked more carefully i found their special of the day: Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup. I was like SCORE! That's what i'm getting. The girl behind that counter was really nice and was quite helpful when i asked all these questions about bowl sizes and ingredients and stuff, even though everything was in plain sight. I felt pretty stupid. As I was rung up, looked at the cash registered and noticed they didn't take cards, so i went into my bag only to find that I had absolutely NO CASH. They have an ATM machine though which saved the day. I took my soup to their massive dining room. I wish i took a picture because this place was super cosy and awesome. They had different compartments in the room. One compartment had couches and plants everywhere. It was such a great atmosphere. The music as a little on the emo side but i liked it. Their soup was super flavorful. OMG!! i could have had another bowl! It was a little on the salty side but hangover + salt = perfect combination. So i devoured it and went on my way. I wanna come back for their other soups, but Milwaukee is so far away. Sigh!

I can't decide if this place has the best soups in Milwaukee or if it's The Soup Otzie's. Regardless, this place is awesome. Whether you work downtown or just want to enjoy great soup this is a destination. I'm probably here at least once a week for lunch. More than likely on a Friday so I can partake in the sweet sweet goodness that is Ivan's Tikka Masala soup. It is THE BEST. Other highly rated soups include buffalo chicken and reuben. However, all of the soups are delicious; you will not be disappointed! Service is friendly, but to the point. This is due to the fact that the line often snakes out the door. I recommend getting here early if you want to guarantee getting what you want! Oh...and bring cash - debit/credit cards not accepted.

I tried both the buffalo chicken and the chicken pot pie. Service was kind, and when learning that this was my first time at The Soup House, I was treated to a few samples of the different soups. Was definitely not expecting to like the buffalo chicken, but was pleasantly surprised. Chicken pot pie was a little too salty for my palate, but overall I enjoyed it. You can add french bread or corn bread for a small fee. I'm a fan. I love soup. :D Cash only, too.
