Milwaukee River Cruise Line

205 W Highland Ave Ste 204

What's better than floating down the MKE river on a warm summer evening with 15 of your friends, all the beer you can drink AND a 2-man polka band? Nothing, my friends - nothing. The Mister and I recently did just this with the Stein Club from OGBH and it was fabulous! Our boat was very clean, our captain was friendly and there was even a tiny bathroom. (I didn't dare try, but it looked ok) This line is run by the same folks who run the Eidelweiss boats, so you can expect that they know what they are doing. If you rent, you can choose to pilot a pontoon yourself, or they'll drive it for you and make stops. The best part is cruising down the river, drink in hand, past all the office buildings - the poor souls inside are most certainly green with envy. (I sure was when my office faced the river)

Had a great breakfast here today. Service was exemplary. My bloody Mary was delicious, the coffee was perfect. Daughter and I had the Croque Madame, which was grilled ham, white cheddar, with an egg over medium - an excellent sandwich! Son had a ham and cheddar omelet, which he inhaled! Hubby had a perfectly prepared club sandwich accompanied with a generous fruit salad. Their hash browns were fried to perfect crispiness in butter, I could have eaten a pound of them!

I have been in love with East Side Ovens since I first tried their vegan strawberry rhubarb pie around 2002. Delicious! I don't think I've ever had anything there that I didn't like, but my favorites are definitely the strawberry rhubarb pie and the blueberry dumplings. I haven't had their bread in years but I remember really liking the regular whole wheat. I'm not one for pecan sandies, but for some reason, I just can't get enough of these powdered sugar delights. I used to buy their stuff directly from their Bay View store front but now usually get them at farmers markets, Outpost coop, or other outlets.
Love this little place! Everything is natural and tastes great. Only open Saturday mornings. Place is definately low maintenance, a few folding tables with yummy baked goods. Prices are reasonable and people are friendly.
Best vegan brownies in the Midwest! (or anywhere else I've tried) East Side Ovens Bakery was a clear find during my visit to Milwaukee. The owner was very friendly, everything at ESOB is completely vegan, and the prices were unbelievably reasonable (I got 3 things for only $5). The cherry turnover/danish was pretty good, as was the sugar cookie; however, the vegan brownie was the highlight of my visit. This was, by far, the best vegan brownie I've ever had. To give you an idea, it resembled a cake brownie with frosting and tasted like the real deal. I will definitely come back to ESOB during any Milwaukee visit. (Be mindful of the hours, as they're only open to the public on Saturdays from 8AM to 1PM)

Manderley Bed and Breakfast

A sweet, generous, historic little home. The B&B owners live on site, and they've obviously poured themselves into turning it into something like a tiny museum. The interior is an incredible recreation of a late-19th century mansion: decorated walls, little sculptures, amazing woodwork, carvings everywhere. You'll find gorgeous glass, because Andy is a glassblower. Andy knows *everything* about the history of that period-- and the history of the city. I spent more than an hour asking him questions and learning about exactly why the canopy over the bed looked the way it did. And when different houses in Milwaukee were built. And why. Just amazing. If you don't want to talk, though, it's a quiet and cozy place. Plenty of luxury sodas and nice candies. Breakfast is made the way you want it -- deliciously (and vegetarian, for me. But they have their own chickens if you want fresh eggs.) We even had cookies left out for us. All in all, a gorgeous place and so much better than a hotel. Highly recommended. PS: Ask to hear the real, pre-electric phonograph that they restored themselves. One hundred years old, worked by a hand crank, and it still plays records!
We had a great stay here in November! The couple that runs the B&B is very helpful and has put a ton of work into the details of the house. Everything they cooked was delicious and they were very accommodating to our vegetarian needs. The room was great and actually much bigger than I expected from the site. The jacuzzi tub was nice and they even had a crackle log for us to set on the fire as it was freezing that night. Super cozy stay and would definitely return.
Andy and Marie were super sweet and gracious hosts during our stay last weekend. We stayed in Sophie's Room and it was spacious, cozy, and bright. The electric fire is a nice addition to the room and made our stay very cozy. The breakfast they made us was delicious and they were great company over our meal. They had a good DVD collection and a few games to play. Our only complaint was that the location isn't great -- its about two miles west of downtown Milwaukee, but we Uber'd and taxi'd whenever we wanted to go anywhere (it was only like $5-6 a ride) so it all worked out! Thank you for a great stay!

Bunzel's catered a buffet for our rehearsal dinner at Paddy's Pub. We needed one vegetarian option (I was originally concerned because the menus online were so meat-heavy) and they were happy to comply with this AMAZING veggie-heavy pasta. Even the non-vegetarians were digging into it. They helped us package all of the leftover food to take home, which fed us for about a week after the wedding! My mother-in-law worked with them directly leading up to the rehearsal but from my perspective everything went smoothly and was offered affordably.
