This is the most impressive real Chinese food experience I have ever had in the middle and part of US. By saying real Chinese food I am notifying those who give like " the Golden Gate" restaurant 5 star that this is not your choice if you enjoy the American Chinese Food. This is a Cantonese staying restaurant. I am so impressive that they have swimming fish!!! It taste even better in my hometown!!! The dim sum are amazing. You can tell that they all made by themselves not just buying from the Asian market. I don't understand why they only have 2 stars!! From the decoration to the food, i will give 5 stars. The only suggestion is that the waitress is not that friendly. Others so good!!!

I am seriously underwhelmed. Went with my friend over our lunch hour and luckily I went in with low expectations. Anything more than that, and I surely would have been horribly disappointed. I will say this - the price is right. For about $6 you can a hearty-sized entree (from about 20 standard choices), soup and an eggroll. Our eggrolls, however, were freezing cold on the inside, so contrary to our usual behavior we sent them back. The next one was overdone, but at least was cooked through. Overall, I was thoroughly unimpressed and won't be returning.

I have no idea why this place isn't rated higher! As far as I'm concerned, it's the most authentic Chinese food in Milwaukee -- and that's coming from someone who grew up in So-Cal, lived most of her life in San Francisco, and visits Shanghai for 2-4 weeks every year. True, the interior is a little dingy when you first walk in, which is sad because once you get into the restaurant proper it's beautifully furnished. True, the service is a little odd if you're used to the big smiles and overwhelming friendliness of gastropubs and whatnot. True, the standard/American menu that you see online is full of crap like sweet'n'sour and General Tso's, but that's pretty typical for the Midwest. From the other reviews, it sounds like maybe the dimsum isn't great, but I really enjoyed their authentic dinner menu. My suggestion is to ask for the "Chinese" menu -- don't worry, there are English translations for everything -- and get a little adventurous. I got to-go, and picked up roast duck, west lake beef soup, eggplant w/ salted fish (salted fish is sort of an acquired taste, like bleu cheese, so be warned), and salt and pepper squid. They threw in a serving of potstickers for free :) Everything was excellent, especially the duck, and portions were very generous. I'm definitely going again!

Small family owned restaurant, that genuinely appreciates their clients business. I ordered take out & the portions were huge and delisious!! My boyfriend and I had food for days! We ordered: Whole roasted duck Shrimp fried rice (extra shrimp) Beef broccoli Egg drop soup AND they gave us a order of gyoza on the house!

Smells like wet dog inside the restaurant. Food isn't very good either with the exception of the crunchy noodles!

Love this place. I have brought several friends here and all have returned on their own. Prefer this to a buffet. There is so much food so usually have enough to take home for another meal. The shrimp are always large and fresh and the vegetables are fresh and crispy.

Ew is all I can say , the food is DISGUSTING !!!! I saw their website that they have dimsum so I decided to place a to go order. I arrived about 5:30 there was no one in the parking lot and the place is dark and had no customer, and they don't take American Express. The egg tarts were probably the worst egg tarts I have ever had the texture of custard was kinda watery. Eww Omg the radish cake was nothing like I expected. It was partially burned and it looks browned and it's rubber like . I'm pretty sure it's expired . Yuck !!! Wonton noodle soup the soup was salty not tasty at all the wontons were ok but after the radish cake I'm hesitant to eat them. Never ever going to that place again horrible experience !!! I have never had asian food that bad I still feel like throwing up just thinking about it

I was born and raised in Asia, only moved to Milwaukee about 4 years ago, for their price, Peony is the most authentic Chinese food you can get. Yes they can improve the decor and service, but remember you get what you pay! You can go to Fortune Restaurant, but in my opinion, the food is very similar quality, you pay at least 30% more expensive; service is not better, and the tables usually either smell like dirty mop or it's sticky. Try "hot pot" at Peony!

If ambiance weren't an issue, I'd give Peony a higher rating. The dim sum was tasty (but sort of on the salty side), and I'll agree with the one reviewer below that the daikon cakes shouldn't even be on the menu if they are consistently bad, which for me, they were). The price was rather low for dim sum. What concerns me is their low turn out on a Saturday afternoon during the lunch hour. And, they need some assistance from the hostess of Restaurant Redemption, because their business model isn't working out. The ambiance is somber, window-less, and ancient. They need to make the place more upbeat. Seal off the entry way from seeing the bar area, as it looks like a warehouse with the lights turned off. I'd relocate to somewhere else if I were the owners, and spruce up the signage. And get rid of the fish tanks, or house them somewhere in the back. Otherwise, looks aside, I'd go here again, but it's sort of out of the way for us.

Terrible chinese food. Came here for dinner with family since it's one of the few chinese restaurants in Milwaukee and yes, my chinese family likes to eat chinese food for family gatherings. However, I don't think this is what they had in mind. All the food was greasy, gloopy and bland. Started out with some green onion pancakes which would have been good if not way too salty. Then some steamed dumplings which were okay, very big. Then peking duck where the meat was okay but the skin wasn't crispy. If we had just stopped there with these appetizers Peony might have earned 2 starts. Unfortunately we then went on to have a whole series of dishes for the banquet which included salted fish (very pungent and oily), steamed chicken (good if it weren't so greasy), ho fun noodles (meh), pan fried noodles (meh but hard not to like this dish), eggplant (meh), sweet and sour pork (fast food style), etc etc. All these dishes were not great. As in everyone took a spoonful to try it then no one wanted more. By the end of the evening we had eaten 1/3 tops of all the dishes. They packed up the rest for us to take home and we took them to be polite but just threw them away. I'm not sure how this place stays in business. On a Saturday night my family took up two tables and there was no one else eating at the restaurant the entire time we were there. For the rest of the weekend when we would plan where to go for our next meal someone would inevitably say "no more 1 star places please". Also, waitstaff was surly -1 star.

This is quite possibly the worst dim sum experience in my life. I should have kept on driving when I noticed that there was only two other cars in the parking lot, but then again I was just a passenger. I walked in and as the guy got out menus, I think he may have also turned on the lights to the dining room...hard to tell, but he definitely hit a switch and I couldn't see the other room. The room has a weird feel since there are zero windows and decor leaves a lot of be desired, but that I could normally overlook. However it looked like the walls were dirty...and that is something I can't overlook. We ordered some dim sum items including shrimp dumplings, beef crepes (which is really beef wrapped in rice noodle), beef balls, taro cake, and egg tarts. These are all staples of dim sum, and I personally think is something you should not screw up. Well lets say, there is a reason why there were no customers. The beef crepes were filled with actual slices of beef which is not normal. It tasted sorta weird because of that, and they used some sort of mixed soy sauce almost gravy like that tasted strange. The beef balls were alright, but not what I was expected. The taro cake was dry. The egg tarts were in a very sugary shell (tasted like a sugar cookie) and the custard tasted watery and had a freezer burn like taste. The only acceptable item was the shrimp dumplings (which had more other fillings than is traditional in a har gaw), but I know that these came from a frozen package. It was a terrible experience and I would never ever tell anyone to go here. I am still cringing at the thought that I ate here.

A restaurant I will not be ordering from again the food quality is terrible and the portions are small on the lunch menu. When you call to tell them you were not satisfied you do not get any satisfaction yourself they do not offer to replace the food with something else which is normal for most places not a place I would recommend for anyone to eat. I will be going to Happy Wok from now on which is much better food at a better price.

I had one of my most interesting food experiences here. Call it an educational event, but it was the first time that I had ever tasted red wine that had gone bad. I guess that most people don't order red wine when they eat Chinese, but someone in our party had ordered a glass and wanted me to try it because it tasted funny. It had a faint odor of musty gym socks. The taste was slightly vinegary and was as if soy sauce was added to it. The bottle was probably uncorked weeks ago and just left at room temp. So now I know how they make red wine vinegar! The food that was served was a perfect compliment to the wine. Our table had put in two orders of spicy mala beef and one of them, the beef had gone bad. You could tell that they used up the old meat and brought out the newer beef for the second dish. Both dishes, supposed to be identical , but tasted very different. Turnip cakes tasted like that had been frozen and thawed out multiple times as they were crumbly. I was initially very impressed with the extensive menu, but then realized as we started to eat that they probably keep so much food on hand and so little rotation of the ingredients, it is a recipe for disaster. If you find yourself eating here, I would probably stick to the sesame chicken as it is a high volume item and so you won't get stuck with expired ingredients. The shredded duck was decent. Despite all of this, I am surprised that I did not get sick.

We have eaten in Chinatowns all over the country, and a few outside the USA. Dim Sum is one of our favorite things to order. The Peony Restaurant offers a delicious 45+ item Dim Sum menu with absolutely the best deep fried taro root balls we have ever had. Service is always friendly and fast. Especially considering each Dim Sum dish is individually made to order. Decor is very clean, fresh, and authentic even if a bit sparse. We love it here.

This is an underrated gem I highly recommend! I come here with my family for dim sum and lunch all the time. We love the dim sum and noodles and their lunch specials too. Haven't tried their dinners. Don't let the lack of cars in the parking lot deter you from going in there. Like I say, this is a gem place ( not enough people know about it) with really good, authentic dim sum and we love it I've taken friends here who were visiting from New York City who were in Milwaukee visiting last week and they loved it too.

The worst dim sum ever. They put PORK FAT in their shrimp dumplings (Har Gow), they use scallions and filler and you can not taste the shrimp. It is reminiscent of egg foo young filling. The Peony dumpling= same filling as Har Gow only a fried patty of it. Shrimp with eggplant- no shrimp but a shrimp paste patty. Greasy and slathered with a brown egg foo young sauce. The Duck fun had almost no duck and it was previously frozen and the pancake was gelatinous and cold. When I called to speak with the owner I was told --"NO English" then they proceeded to tell the staff that Americans like pork fat in everything-that's why they put it in the Har Gow. This is a disappointment and in no way resembles a Dim Sum experience. Having eaten Dim Sum throughout the world I can tell you this is not worthy.

Dim sum...by way of David Lynch. This eerie little spot has the oddest vibe ever, but some of the best homemade noodle dishes in town.

I went to peony several times. It had nothing impressing at first. Then, my bf and I ordered the Peking duck. Gosh! It is amazing!!!!!! Definitely the best Peking duck ever! They also have hot pot, dim sum..... The chef seems know how to cook everything.

The food was decent but overpriced. The waitress I'm pretty sure was the only one working there, which made economic sense since we were the only ones eating there. We ate in a room looking like a conference room, by ourselves. It was pretty awkward to say the least. The restaurant is just too quiet and empty to have a good dining experience.

I know i've been spoiled in boston having numerous good dim sum places around me so i went to Peony without high expectations...I just really needed dim sum in my system. Pros: - cheap - decent ha gao (shrimp dumpling) Cons: - I ordered about 10 plates and all I got was soy sauce and about 20 fortune cookies...no hoison or hot sauce...unforgivable. - everything had too much mushrooms in it! everything tasted like mushrooms! i love mushrooms but that doesn't mean I stick in mushrooms in everything I eat All in all I won't come here again...

Do not be fooled - this is a zero star rating masquerading as a one star thanks to Yelp's stubborn opposition to recognizing zero as a real number. I'm not one of those Asians that can't appreciate Chamerican food. I am one of those Asians that hates crappy dim sum. I wasn't expecting the best given the locale that we live in, but Peony didn't even offer anything worth dubbing mediocre. I give this place an ugh, blech and a how-dare-you for giving me that dreaded bad mood from food feeling. Guess I will keep schlepping my a$$ to Chicago for dim sum that's "close" to my hood.

I'm still looking for a good Chinese food in the greater Milwaukee area. Peony is definitely not the place! While driving down Bluemound, I barely spotted Peony's because it's obscure enough that if you didn't know it was there, you would drive right past it (I wish I would have). My thinking: This place must be good because it's still in business despite the fact that it could easily be missed on the road. I thought that maybe, it's good reputation was keeping it going. Wrong! This place, which was completely empty at 5:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, should have immediately sent me packing. Unfortunately, someone was waiting at the cashier counter when I walked in. I should have just asked for a menu and left, but feeling adventurous, I ordered the sweet and sour chicken with the upgrade of soda, egg roll an mocha cake for $1.50 more (total $10.07). About 10 minutes later, after admiring the fish and lobster tanks, my food was ready. When I got home and opened the container, the sweet and sour chicken (or as the menu spells it "chichen) looked like a can of apple pie filling (no kidding). While I can't say tasted awful, it definitely wasn't good. It was sweet, half-done elongated chicken chicken chunks with chunks of canned pineapples and quartered tomatoes? To make it even less appealing, it was accompanied with plain white rice and a not so impressive egg roll. I would have to say the best part of the carryout was the can of Sprite that came with the upgrade. Unfortunately more than half made it to the fridge and likely will make it to the trash. If you're looking for good Chinese, Peony is not place (although I hear they have good Dim Sum?!)

See my previous review for commentary, but an edit to Shui Wah -- There are no carts there and the servers carry the trays. However, the concept is just the same and their stuff is the way it should be.

Have eaten here several times over the years. I was in the area again last night and decided to stop by again. I was slightly worried since Bluemound Road was under construction that they might not be open. Luckily they were, however with few customers. I only go here for the Dim Sum, as good as you can get in Chicago, but closer to home for me. I will admit that it is not as good as San Francisco or Vancouver, however this is the Milwaukee area and Dim Sum is a rarity. There are no carts but the menu choices are extensive. Those who complain about the lack of carts must have limited experiences. I've been to as many Dim Sum restaurants that don't use carts as those that do. Over all the food was good and the prices very reasonable. I will continue to visit The Peony when in the area.

I love Chinese food - I get a lot of takeout. Although this place is a little too far from home, I make a point of going there regularly. I consider it to be an excellent Chinese place; it's a little nicer than the typical greasy, small, stuck-in-the mall takeout. I especially like their broccoli chicken. They are very friendly, have plenty of parking.

I was eager to try Peony for an "authentic" Dim Sum experience. First of all, this restaurant is not in Milwaukee, but rather Wauwatosa. Not a big deal, but if you are a Milwaukee resident it's a 20 minute drive, and in my overall opinion not worth the hassle. Upon arriving we were only offered the "regular" menu, which featured American Chinese mainstays such as beef & broccoli and sweet and sour dishes. However, we were on a mission for Dim Sum. As I understand it, Dim Sum is typically served by waiters circling the restaurant floor with trays filled with various steamed baskets. For good reason, Peony has not adopted a following and opts to offer guest menus. We ordered a few items, and to our disappointment many of the items we hoped for were not available, most notably the "house" dumpling. We ended up ordering duck & chicken legs, steamed shrimp dumplings, steamed chicken and mushrooms buns, stuffed eggplant, rice wrapped in a lotus leaf stuffed with sausage and egg, and a tripe dish. The portions were generous, especially since dishes were relatively inexpensive ranging from 2.50-4.50. Most of the dishes were too salty. Highlights included the steamed dumpling and lotus wrapped rice, likely because these dishes didn't seem to be over salted as many of the others. The Lotus wrapped rice had a great contrast of textures as the exterior was browned and offered a good crunch. Given how empty the restaurant was, the service was very slow. I am unlikely to return to Peony, however enjoyed the experience that is Dim Sum, and would like to try it again at another restaurant.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
