    I once awoke with gryo meat stuck to my face... Okay okay I lie, it happened all the time. I really do dream about OG's once and awhile in a favorable light. There is something better with OG's than any other of the gyro places. It has more salt, the 'cucumber sauce' has more garlic. Something. Anyway, everyone I have ever taken to OG's loves it and hates it at the same time. I guess this is what it is like to be a drug addict. That should be their slogan; 'Oakland Gyro's the heroin of late night eats'

    A comfy, friendly place to go on the East side near UWM. They always give huge portions of everything and they are pretty quick unless it is one of those night where it is crowded. The restaurant is very well kept and the men who work there are really cool.

    My companion and I were out looking for food around 8pm. Oakland Gyros was open, had several vegetarian options, pretty fast service, and very generous portions. Vegetarians can get the spinach pie, the saganaki (flaming cheese), or a vegetarian gyro, which the woman behind the counter explained as "basically a Greek salad on a pita, chopped finer." Service was a combination of people picking the food up and it being brought to the table. (The souvlaki, for example, was flamed tableside.) The servers were very friendly; I'd wondered about the tips jar, but ours certainly deserved one. The vegetarian gyro was generous for two people and the fries were huge. I'd have liked a little less oil in the dressing but had no other complaints. It was mostly lettuce, feta, dressing, with a little cucumber and some tomato. The pitas were a bit small and sort of chewy, but good. We were both quite full for about 12 bucks.

    Good quality and quantity! Open late! be aware of possible germs (sharing ketchup and the other sauces...ew.) Good, fast service. Good location. Various types of crowds here, sometimes you'll get a really long line of drunk people, if you cant beat 'em, join 'em.

    Are you very drunk? Job interview tomorrow? Fear the hot meat tubes!

    Oakland gyros, how I love thee. Whether I'm hungover or just really really hungry, you have me covered. The regular gyro is so big you can get an extra pita and have two sandwiches. As much delicious sauce as you want makes this the best gyros ever. FYI - you'll be smelling like gyros all day after eating here so a post dine change of clothes is probably a good idea.

    If you're in college, you eat here! If you're not in college, you still eat here! The gyros are delish and the fries are some of the best! If you're a vegetarian order two pitas--they come with olives, feta, & a pepperoncini; just dip it in the Tzatziki (cucumber) sauce [with a side of fries, of course]. The eggplant is also quite good here. They have a huge menu, most of which I haven't tried, because the gyros are that good. The food is greasy, yes, but once in a while you need some grease! It's good for you--unless you're really obese :{ DO NOT skip the Tzatziki sauce, that's the most important part. This place is perfect to go with a group, go with a friend, or even go alone!

    Like many other UWM alumni, I used to go here a lot. I've never been a Gyro guy, but let me say that their everyday fish fry is pretty damn good! Seriously... I don't know what it is because the fish look like they're just frozen filets from a bag... but they're pretty good! Try it if you're into fish fries, you may be pleasantly surprised. I'm also pretty sure that the same greek dude took my order every single time over the 4 year span that I went there, which is incredible.

    I was on a trip to Milwaukee this weekend & this is a favorite spot of who I was visiting. So we had to try it. I had the best chicken kabob from here & a good salad too. We had carryout. Took a bit of time for the food to be prepared but they were pretty busy on a Saturday night. Friendly service. I would return.

    This is my favorite place to eat...period. The prices are extremely reasonable, The staff is very courteous, the orders come out quickly and the food is amazing. I mostly get gyros there but the few times I have tried other things(lamb shank, spinach pie, cheeseburger), they were very tasty. Can't go wrong with the rice pilaf. Love that you get kalamata olives, pepperoncini and feta cheese with your gyro. If you order a second pita bread (like me), you get even MORE of the three aforementioned items.

    Oakland Gyros is a Milwaukee tradition. I frequented this fine restaurant often during college. It's cheap, open late, and delicious. I'm not sure what people are expecting from a late-night Greek restaurant in Wisconsin, but I think it achieves everything one should expect and more. Only issue I have ever had is not having cash to pay as they don't accept anything else. But they do have that convenient, super expensive ATM in the entry-way. It sounds like you won the jackpot every time you get cash out which makes you feel better about the $3.00 fee.

    This is the place for REAL gyro meat, freshly sliced off a rotating cylinder of glory. Lots of onions and an entire bottle of cucumber sauce make for an unforgettable orgy with that sweet little lamb.

    I don't normally crave Gyros but if I wanted one, this would be the place. Fast, inexpensive, hearty portions and most important of all: DELICIOUS.

    To begin with a trite (but true) phrase to describe OG's, I grew up on this stuff! This was my family's go-to cheap, local, good quality/great quantity spot when I was younger. After the a break during middle school (because we ate at a little bit nicer places and I didn't have my own money to spend on food), I rekindled my serious relationship with OG's when I started high school around the corner. Literally, I sold CDs to classmates to make money to cover my rice pilaf with extra lamb sauce as an after school snack. The place has never changed it's menu (though prices have gone up a little but remain great for the amount of food you get). When I was younger I went for the spanakopita (spinach pie) and avgalemono soup, both very good and traditional. In high school I would go for a snack, like I said, of rice pilaf with a little extra lamb sauce (no charge). Sometimes - depending on my CD sales for the day - I would ask for $1 or $2 worth of gyro meat (an off-the-menu trick that is so clutch). When the place became my home-from-college late-night meeting-with-old-friends spot I committed myself to the full platters - always gyro of beef sish. The platters are PILED with meat above a greasy, chewy pita with either Greek salad, good, thick fried, or tons rice pilaf (you also get a few pepperoncinis and olives. I would get mad at a friend who ordered a burger or mozzarella sticks or a fish sandwich, but their curly fries are as classic as their platters. Greek music, Santorini-style painted interior, all Greek employees, 3 gyro meats constantly on rotation, lines out the door until 3am and the best booth I've ever sat in. This is MY SPOT forever. OG's 4 Lyfe!

    Outstanding Food!!! Best Gyros in town!!! Nice portions, fast service, and good staff!! Would recommend to everyone!!!

    I totally embarrassed myself here. It should be illegal to get your own squeeze bottle of tzaziki/yogurt sauce/nectar of the Gods with a meal. I had heard about this place before I visited Milwaukee, and became creepily obsessed with it. Finally, I made it! I ordered simply, just the gyro salad, and received my holy grail of squeeze bottle. Now, I'm completely spoiled and scoff at every other Greek restaurant in the world. (Well, save the ones in Greece) Ok, or at least, the ones I've been to thus far that don't equip you with your own yogurt sauce grenade. This stuff could mask the flavor of *anything* and make it palatable. "Yes. I'd like to order a side of cardboard and a bucket of your sauce, please." *oh, and the gyro meat was greasy goodness. But have you heard about their sauce?

  • Murr E.

    Alright, to be honest I have never been here sober...ever... sooo the food is awesome and even amazing the next morning. Decent service for having to deal with the drunks at 230am. Go oakland gyros!

  • Insun M.

    4 stars for the wonderful tasty gyro meat and fresh greek salad with awesome feta cheese. 2 stars for the pita bread and tsatki sauce. The pita that the gyro came with was kind of hard and not as fluffy as it should be. For the amount of meat they give you the pita could also have been slightly larger. As for the sauce I'm really confused as to why so many reviewers liked it. It was the most watered down tsatki sauce I've ever had. The flavor was so mild that I could barely taste it. All in all its a good place if you're craving gyros. Best gyro in mke that I've had so far (kinda sad huh).

    It doesn't get better than this for Gyros. My wife and I spend $10.11 for a Gyro that has so much meat, we need to order a second Pita and of course a Cheeseburger with Extra Crispy French Fries. What a deal! The cucumber sauce is distributed by the bottle to each patron -- that's a sign they nailed it. They only accept cash, but an ATM is available in the doorway. They usually get busy after bar time on the weekend, but really are good anytime of the day. I don't recommend their dolmades -- in fact they are terrible (served cold with terrible sauce), but nothing else on the menu has disappointed us. Finally - order your Gyro how you want. If you want fried onions, tell them, it's free. If you want your meat grilled after it's been cut off the spit, tell them, it's free. If you want extra feta cheese, tell them, it's free. The service is great, it's always the same guys, the crowds are awesome and the food is great. While there is no waiter service, there is almost always someone standing around waiting to clear a table and help you clean up -- very good service. We live in California now, but every single trip back we always stop at Oakland Gyros at least once -- it's that good. Go whether you're nearby or not if you're in the mood for a GREAT Gyro or Burger.

    So.....I don't eat Gyros, but my fiancee and his friends love love love this place. Its open till late hours and gets the drunkies but its a pretty fun and friendly place. They have good hamburgers, soup, and pita with feta. Yum! I would recommend it if you are visiting.

    I've tried all most of the other Gyro places in Milwaukee, and I have got to say: drunk, sober, 6pm or 2am, OG's does it right. I can't speak to anything else on their menu, I haven't tried it - but I know that for $5.00 cash, I'm going to grab the white bag and bolt knowing that I have just scored the best sandwich in town. Why not 5-Stars? Have you ever had pizza in Rome? Somehow the US version just doesn't make the cut, so I'm pretty confident someone in Greece or Turkey somewhere is enjoying that 5-Star Gyro...

  • Roz K.

    I give this place a solid 4 stars. It's a popular joint for the locals and the college students and the food is filling and cheap (think tons of meat). It's also pretty good stuff and I'm saying this sober. Food is a bit on the heavy side though. The cashier guys are nice and your food comes fast. Most people get the food to go but I like to dine in since there's a cool vibe about it. I come here about once a week and the food quality is consistent. My biggest issue with this place is that their chicken's kind of dry, but the gyros and moussaka works. They also open late and that makes me happy. I don't know why some reviewer thought this place was greasy because a) I don't smell like gyro meat when I get out and b) I've eaten greasy gyros and this place isn't quite it.

    Oakland Gyros is as good as it gets for gyros. It is a great place to go after a night on the town or drinking. I can say this from much experience. It seems that every time I go out in Milwaukee, something triggers inside my head around 1:30 am and I simply must go get a gyro on Oakland. Even at normal dining hours, the food is still great, drunk or sober. Even when they are packed and the line extends out the door the service is pretty fast. The portions are large and the gyro meat is juicy. Every gyro plate comes with some olives and cheese. They are a perfect accent to what could be considered a near perfect gyro. Every table as a bottle of the yogurt sauce so you can just soak your gyro, fries or burger in it. The sauce is great and it's not uncommon to see someone try to sneak out with a bottle. The burgers are good and so are the fries but if you go there for the first time you HAVE to get a gyro.

  • Christa K.

    Great gyros, tons of food. Alas, we went before an event, so the people watching wasn't as "active" as after bar (I'll have to make that trek one night...) Like you've read, having access to the squeeze bottle of the sauce makes this the best!

    Awesome food, good prices, and for a counter place, pretty darn good service. 5 stars for being perfect in it's niche.

    Huge portions, ok flavor, cheap prices. Oakland Gyro's is an occasional guilty pleasure of mine when I'm out drinking and get that 2 am hunger. The downside is I, much like many others, all have the same idea to go there at 2 am. The line is usually out the door on a Friday night. So just be aware you may be waiting for a while with a bunch of drunk college students....and people like me....also usually drunk. But nevermind that, the food you get will be palatable and soak up the booze that brought you there in the first place. One thing of note, they don't take credit cards at this location. Cash only and they have a convenient (for a fee) ATM machine in the doorway. Strangely enough, their location on Layton avenue does take credit cards. Seems to me like they're trying to bilk extra money out of patrons who have that tasty 2am gyro craving since they own the machine.

    I used to live down the block from Oakland gyros. That street is so full of great cheap places to eat that McDonald's went out of business. Bonus!! The gyros are great, but my favorite thing to get there is the Athenian chicken combo. It was this wonderfully juicy rotesserie chicken with rice and salad. At least two meals (if not three!) for about seven bucks. Just remember they don't take cards (at least they didn't the last time I was there) There's an ATM, but best to just bring cash with you.

  • Michael M.

    Seriously amazing. Nice atmosphere and really good food. The Greek salad I ordered was a great size, the Gyro I got was almost too much to handle. It came with enough meat for two people. The yogurt/cucumber sauce was different but different in a good way. I really did enjoy my first time here and will be coming back.

    Best Gyros in Milwaukee! Enough said!!

  • Justin E.

    Love this place! Food is great, portions are huge... If you like gyros, this place is a must! Be careful, post bar visits can lead to over eating and a horrid Greek food smell seeping from your pores the next day! Don't let that detract you from experiencing some awesome food in Milwaukee!

    (5)
  • Mark R.

    A favorite for takeout when there is no desire to make dinner. Portions are huge and sharable unless you have been out all night drinking. Only complaint is they don't do the credit card thing.

  • Graham C.

    I give this place 5 stars based on my opinions in an altered state this past Friday night. Look, let's be clear. Much like White Castle, this place tastes better when you're drunk. Unlike White Castle, however, I would totally eat here sober. What I really appreciate about these guys is their dedication to their craft. Face it. They could turn out really crappy stuff after 1AM and it would still sell. However, they sold me a stuffed and incredibly tasty gyro. They get the extra star for giving me my own bottle of tzatziki sauce. This was awesome. Far too long has man, drunk and sober, been enjoying a delicious gyro or souvlaki when they realize they which they had more sauce. Oakland Gyros to the rescue. Thank you men. You are a credit to your gyro making ancestors.

    Ok, So I am giving Oakland Gyros 3 stars for the following reasons: Pros: -They have big portions of Gyros -This is the only place in the world that makes me like Gyros -Relatively Priced Cons: -Can be expensive when you don't want gyros -small portions for anything other than gyros -gets rowdy after 2:00AM This is an OK place for that late night snack and mid-day snack. It is kind of a small place, pretty well kept, but it doesn't have it all. Like I said, it has great prices and portions for gyros, they are huge! And I hate Gyros but this is the only place that makes me actually like them. In contrast however, If you want anything else other than a gyro such as a burger or something? plan on spending over $10 and nothing bigger than a McDonalds cheeseburger. It has great potential but its lacking. Also, the three different times I have been here there has been a fight. I have never seen more hostility in this place than anywhere else in my life. I don't understand it and it makes it really uncomfortable for other patrons when people are acting that way. They also do not take credit cards which is not a big deal by no means but, if your in a rush and don't have cash? It would be nice. Good, but not great.

    (3)
  • Erika B.

    The food is OK, and I give the staff major props for putting up with so many drunks, transients, and transient drunks. This is the gold standard for drunk food - relatively quick, most of the menu is fried in grease - but it's certainly not a place anyone should go out of their way to eat at, and I would never label this place as "the best gyro in the world," let alone the best in Milwaukee. For that, I'd point people in the direction of Apollo Cafe on Brady.

    (2)
  • Heather T.

    OG is OMG. ;) Sorry, I couldn't resist. Seriously, though, these are the greatest gyros I've ever had. If you get a 'basket' (gyro w/fries), I promise you will be full. Really full. Word to the wise: Don't eat in there--get it to go. You inevitably walk out smelling terrible if you stay in there for more than 5-10 minutes.

  • Matt E.

    This is my favorite eatery of all time. Period. Have I had better, higher end food elsewhere? Yes. Have I eaten somewhere cleaner and with more ambiance? Yes Will I return next time and every time I enter the 414? Beyond a shadow of a doubt. The place is simply extraordinary in every way. The nondescript exterior would lead you to believe the place is run-of-the-mill. But the service, the food, the value, the management, the options, always rise above your expectations. Much has been said that OGs is simply just good drunk food. It is true it does make a good drunk snack, meaty, filling, carbo platters they are, but I attest they taste just as delicious in any state. But to emphasize the dedication here, let me narrate a typical weekend night. Insert OGs on the corner of Oakland and Locust. The only shiny beacon of hope on the UWM's campus. Stepping inside the door, the place is full, the line stretches to the door. You'd think aww hell with this lets go someplace easier BUT NO, the waitstaff are taking your orders in the line, taking your payments along the way, baskets are flying out of the kitchen. The hardworking OGs staff is just flying off the handle. You get your tray in startlingly fast time, with a water, ketchup & cucumber sauce all ready on your tray. The platter (for the true experience) has a side of fries or salad, two large blocks of feta, thinly cut onions, several slices of tomato, a warm pita and an altar of lamb. 15 minutes later you are stuffed beyond belief, and so very satisfied. A kind worker has charitably come by and refilled your glass two or three times, the line is still forming, no signs of stopping. It seems OGs never closes. The things I could say about OGs, it's satisfied day and night, time and time again. There's a reason my change jar in Madison is an empty Oakland Gyros cup and its not for lack of imagination.

    I enjoyed my HUGE ass Greek salad with a side of gyro meat! Awesome, price is great too.

  • Ian Y.

    A Milwaukee staple, OGs does gyros right. If you're sober, don't go in after 10:00 pm--you'll just be irritated by the cacophony created by college students.

  • peter k.

    Eating at Oakland Gyros is a lot like the hookup you had that one night in undergrad that you've tried to repress. First - your only defense is that you were so incredibly drunk, you didn't know what you were doing. And second - the next morning - you will be *really* sorry. Oakland Gyros gets two stars because at least with Oakland Gyros - you don't have to be scared that your friends will find out. The food is sort of tasty in a weird sort of way - but probably not worth the unholy chaos it will unleash on your digestive system.

    Best Greek restaurant in Milwaukee by far. This place looks like a hole in the wall but it is fantastic. For about $5 you get a gyro with TONS of meat in it and an excellent sauce. Their cheeseburgers are also great. You can easily feed a family of four for about $30 and it is great.

  • Kesha P.

    Hands down best gyro's in Wisconsin!! I have been going there since I was a little kid (20 plus years now). The food has always maintained its quality over the years and has always maintained the LARGE amounts of meat you get. I do hate the now day prices, but its worth it when ONE dinner gives you enough for two possible sandwiches or one extremely large one. The owner of the store is there most days and is the nicest man EVER!! He remembers our family from years of patronage and ALWAYS slips my son an ice cream cone! Tip: Order an extra pita and extra cucumber sauce!!

  • Jim M.

    This is a classic favorite for east siders and past east siders. It's unusual for my son to be going to the same place I went to in college, but he seems to be enjoying it as much as I do -- they only difference is that now the kids call it simply "O.G's". While I'm a fan of the gyros plate with rice and gravy (no low calorie choice here), my wife chooses the chicken shish kabob and we both love this place. They've recently opened up another site with the same name. I call that a win.

    IMO Best gyros in town . Love the cucumber dressing. Can't go wrong. Great place to stop by for a late night eat !! Bring cash

  • Chelsie N.

    LOVE this place. Pretty much come for dinner with the intention of having enough leftovers for lunch the next day. Portions are huge and always find myself being impressed with how much meat they give away. The unlimited tzatziki sauce is also a big plus bc I love that stuff. Go-tos are the gyro and chicken kebab platters. Greek salads are delicious and they put huge chunks of feta in them. Lines can get long but they always move quickly. Staff is friendly and are good about turning over tables quickly and cleanly.

    OMG they earned to be the best Gyro's in town. Quick service. Friendly and nice Atmosphere The food was freshly prepared and very tasty and filling. Must go spot!!!

  • Bethany W.

    I give this place 3.5 stars. I loved it for a quick Greek place. The gyros platter I had failed to get more stars for 1) overly drenching my side Greek salad in dressing and 2) only providing me with one pita while you gave me enough meat for five. Overall - Good value and flavor.

  • John K.

    I haven't been here in years and decided to stop in for a late night bite. I ordered the original gryo combo (fries and a drink) and I have to say its one of the best gyros I've ever had. Open late, cheap, friendly with plenty of drunk kids for entertainment. Easy street parking and be sure to bring cash after 12am as they stop taking cards. So old school and so delicious !

    I have never eaten in here, I've always gotten food to go after being somewhere in the area. After a show at the Miramar across the street, this place is hopping, so that has got to tell you something! I usually enjoy a gyro or the gyro platter (shared with my husband, because both are huge), but I have had the mousaka too. I haven't tried every item on the menu, but the few that I have tried have been delicious. I wish there was a location nearer my house, they'd really shake up the food offerings on 76th street! 36/2014/40

    (5)
  • Chris W.

    They give a ridiculous amount of food, which is good, but their food isn't spectacular. I'm not a fan of their gyros because they put enough meat for 3-4 pita breads, but only give you one pita. They charge a really high price for a single pita bread too. The lamb wasn't even that good. Their spinach pie was also 99% cheese. It's good value for your money, but it doesn't taste all that great.

    (4)
  • Mike P.

    Excellent food great service the gyros are excellent the best in the state of Wisconsin lots of food for the money . Very clean for how busy they are open very late too

    Can't find this Rice and Gravy dish anywhere else. I live in Minneapolis now and no Greek restaurants up here serve this. Me and my college friends reminisce about Oakland Gyros and Rice and Gravy each time we see each other. That's some impact.

  • Andy F.

    Cheap and amazing Greek-American food!!! My goodness my mouth is watering just thinking of this place makes me want to come here again and again and again! Seriously, it's addicting! When in the area, you guys must try this place out! Try their gyro platter!! The staff is also very very friendly, and the place is quite popular with the locals too! If you get a chance, you might even see the owner, who reminds you of a character out of the Goodfellas lol!

    Unlimited tzatziki! That's really all you need to know about Oakland Gyros. But if you're still interested to learn more I've got more to say. The portion sizes are ridiculous. You get a mound of food if you order the gyro platter. A ton of delicious, salty, thick pieces of gyro meat; a pita; onions and tomatoes; fries (or some other side, but you want the fries); and of course a bottle of your very own tzatziki. The meat is top tier stuff. I mean, personally, Madison's Parthenon on a busy night will always be the gold standard of gyros for me, but this is a close second. The meat is near perfectly cooked and you get a ton of it. Unlike many gyro places, Oakland is consistent. That is to say, whether you're coming in at bar time or for a lunch break they're always good. This place gets crowded and busy, and it's a bit small so be prepared to be packed in pretty tightly at peak hours. As an aside, who in the hell came up with their prices? Stuff is priced at weird amounts like $3.16 or $10.09. So be aware of that, I guess.

    (4)
  • Phillip C.

    Getting a gyro from here is the best thing ever. Get the combo plate and you get a big order of fries, a massive gyro, unlimited ketchup and cucumber sauce (I wouldn't quite call it tzatziki though) because you get your own squeeze bottles! The prices are good and the food's always been hot. Don't expect to be completely blown away, but expect a damn good meal for very little money. I eat a lot and still can't really finish the entire order of fries once I'm done with the gyro. Only thing I don't like is how flimsy their plastic flatware is.

  • Beth P.

    This was the only place I felt like eating at after I biked 200 miles. Plenty of food. I got the platter, which had meat stacked on top of fries with delicious cucumber yogurt sauce. The meat wasn't the best I've had and the fries weren't super crisp, especially after being stuffed under the rest of the food, but it was a lot of food and it was good. I made two meals out of it by eating the extra meat the next day. I think people adore this place so much because it is good drunk food.

  • Fei L.

    Must eat Leg of Lamb! $10 bucks for such a big and delicious meal? Totally worth it!! I never finished it at one time and it will become my lunch tomorrow! And the next good thing about it is you NEVER wait and don't need to get the food or clean the table yourself, very good and thoughtful service!! The best fast food restaurant ever!!!

    My first visit to the OG. I went during daylight...do people do that? It was a Friday, I was craving a fish fry, and I've been to all the other places around me, so someone suggested OG and I was intrigued enough to give it a try. To put it bluntly, I wasn't impressed. OG definitely has the service part figured out. I walked in to a line of about 4 people, but was at the cash register in about a minute. As I ate, and the line swelled to about 10 people, they had people going through the line taking orders ahead of time. Very proficient! They mixed up orders and instead of calling out my number, I saw an employee take my food right past me and deliver it to another table. Then when the next order came up, the employee realized his mistake, and went and grabbed my food from the customer he just gave it to, and then called out my number.....that was weird, and a little disgusting...but so be it. The food itself? Not good. In a town with a million fish fries.....I'd call this a bottom 10%'er. Bland, boring fish patties, fries that were lukewarm at best, and a whole bunch of other crap piled on top of it that must have been the greek version of a fish fry. Thankfully, it was cheap. I'm not much of a gyro guy, so I doubt I'll be back, but if you like them, I'm sure you'll love this place.

    This is my favorite place for Spinach Pie...very thick and moist! We usually get the Platter w/Greek Salad or w/rice. Sometimes, I go to Cermak, Athenos, etc., & get Spanokopita ingredients & make my own...too much work...theirs is worth it!

    Great gyros, hands down. There's nothing else that compares to the quality and taste. Their taziki 'cucumber' sauce is amazing and I drive past probably 15 Gyro places just to get theirs.

  • Geno P.

    Best gyro in town. Unlimited cucumber sauce with excellent flavor. Recommend splitting gyro platter with another. Order another pita, there is plenty of meat for two sandwiches. Ahhhhh, nothing like burps that you can blow across the room and everyone can smell your lunch.

    Very good late night joint. Took my family here when they were up here to visit and they absolutely loved the gyros and kabobs. Burgers are huge and the mozzarella sticks are freshly made. Authentic Greek food. Owners are extremely nice. Seems like the prices are a little steep for some of their food items.

    I love this place. It's cheap, tasty, and they are so nice. The owner often walks around asking if people want refills on their sodas. My faves in this order: spinach pie (spanakopita), the Athenian chicken, the beef dog, the gyros, and the cod sandwich. Also get the Greek fries and homemade fruit milkshakes!

    Low prices and great food. Oakland Gyros definitely is a great place to stop and grab a bite. Food is usually full of flavor. Great customer service everytime I go. I gave it four stars because sometimes the food can be a bit over cooked. Mainly their burgers. . .they have a charred flavor which is not preferred by most. Granted any other time the food is great. I would recommend this place to anyone.

    First time I was there today, and it was excellent! I had a cheddar gyro, and I definitely recommend it. They definitely don't skimp on anything. Heaping lamb and heaping toppings served on lightly toasted pita with a delicious cucumber/yogurt sauce. Absolutely phenomenal. If you're in Milwaukee, try it! You will not regret it.

    I wished I were in the mood for gyros when we came here, but sadly I was not, for I was getting over being sick. The last thing I wanted was a big ol' greasy hunk of meat. So I got the avgolemono soup, a thick, lemony, eggy cream in a Styrofoam cup. There was a ton of rice, but no chicken meat, which surprised me. I know they make it with chicken stock - it'd be better to leave some pieces in! I did try Julian's spinach pie, which was huge and delicious and so feta-heavy I have no idea how anyone finishes it. Their raspberry shake is quite sweet but apparently made with real fruit, as I found seeds stuck in my teeth later!

  • Jackie W.

    This is a long time favorite of mine. I usually get the gyro combo, which comes with thick slices of meat, onions and tomatoes, a pita, a big cube of feta, and a side. Sides include french fries (not that great), Greek salad (yum), and rice (THE BEST!) Be sure to let them know you want gravy on it. The gravy is more of a sauce than a gravy, and tastes great. The Greek salad is lettuce, tomatoes, thick pieces of cucumbers, 3 cubes of feta, olives and flavorful dressing. Be sure to try some tzatziki sauce, which is unlimited! Their fish fry isn't great, but their other combos are. The Athenian chicken is flavorful, as are the chicken kabobs, but the gyro is the star! The portion sizes are huge and guarantee leftovers. You should definitely stop by if you're in the area- you won't regret it!

    Best place to go to after bar close. Delicious food and the portions are very large and guaranteed to fill you up. It's mostly a college hang out after hours but during the day it's a comfortable atmosphere for anyone.

    Not my first time coming here. Food tastes great and the service was fast and easy. Got my order less than a minute after ordering and they already give you water if you didn't buy a drink.

    I am a regular customer of Oakland Gyros for over 5 years now. I usually order Dolmades or Beef steaks. Tonight (10/27/14) I ordered one Dolmades which comes with 5 pieces and I ordered one extra piece and total was $9.50. I always ask for white sauce (Cucumber Gyro Sauce) and they always give it to me for no charge but tonight when I asked for that sauce the cashier said 50 cents. I surprised because it is first time in over 5 years I see they charge for that Cucumber Gyro Sauce, and when I pay over 9 dollars I expect to get one small Sauce for free !!! Then the cashier said: "people are waiting in line do you want the Sauce or not?" I said "OK, I don't want the sauce" and I brought the food home to eat. As soon as I opened the Dolmades I found out it is Cold, like really cold and just came out of fridge. It was like they forgot to warm it up. Just for letting you know that I live in Shorewood which is 2 minutes away from the store. I don't know what to say. 1. They have increased they prices over the years. 2. They started charging 50 cents for Cucumber Gyro Sauce which should come with a food. 3. The quality of their food went down because it is first time it happened to me in over 5 years. 4. Their customer service went down and they become rude. They used to be excellent restaurant but now ...

    This joint is constantly busy. The gyro size is easily enough for two people. I always order an extra pita and then split it into two not so jaw-breakingly huge gyros. The meat is hot and juicy and it's perfect with just the simple onion garnish and bathed in tzatziki sauce

    Pretty good! I had never tried greek food until a few months ago, and it turned out to be one of my favorite places, given that I can have a pretty tasty meal for less than $10! :o I like the gyros (lamb pieces), the cod fish (whole meal with one or two sides, which are fries, rice or salad. They apply to any combos). Their onion rings are huge. Besides the combos, they have sandwiches and smoothies, too, which I haven't had the chance to try yet. On my bucket list ;) I recommend the place. Neat & fun environment. Such a great deal.

    Not the fanciest place I've ever been to, but the gyros are definitely tasty. My husband and I are still trying to find the right combination for us to order so we both get enough to eat, but don't end up with such a huge amount of leftovers!

    When we return every Xmas to Mke, we flock here. Love the welcoming staff, and the smell and taste of the delicious food. Would bring this place back to Hawaii if we could. Portions are huge and price reasonable. It has not changed since I was a college student there in the 80s.

    I come up from Chicago every weekend just to enjoy this wonderful Greek food. Sure, I've got the renowned Greek town just a few minutes away, but NOPE, doesn't do the trick for me. I always splurge whenever I come here. Gyros, Moussaka, Shish Kebab, Lamb, and much more. Always come during the afternoons, and it is always busy. Ordering all this food lasts me about a week, then I return to replenish my "stock". Amazing Cucumber sauce, this will always be a favorite of mine.

  • Maggie I.

    This place lives up to the hype. Honestly, I've only had gyros here but I don't feel the need to explore the menu anymore. This is my go-to place for gyros: it's tasty, consistent, and there's large portions. If you get the meal (with fries and a soda), you can comfortably split it with two people. The decor is kind of cheesy, but I come for the food. You can only pay with cash past a certain point in the night (I wanna say 11?), but there's an ATM in front.

    This may come as a surprise as I'm a big foodie but this was my first gyro since I was maybe 7-8 years old. And first time having lamb meat/gyro meet in like 8 years after not liking it. But Oakland gyros does something very right and dare I say that I actually liked it. I can see why this place is so busy. Word of advice get am extra pita!

    (4)
  • Kate J.

    My original gyro was fantastic. I had I with rice which was also good however the gyro was large enough to be the whole meal. My husband enjoyed his burger as we'll declaring it was money after he inhaled it. Be prepared to order when you arrived they were super busy and taking orders at the door.

    Unless you are a drunk 20-something at bar time, you should not go to this place. I had fond memories of good food with friends at the infamous Oakland Gyros, but going in my 30s (and in the light of day) was a rude awakening!!! Grimy and stark inside - just plain uninviting. I took my food to go which was ICE cold when I opened it at home (a mere 2min drive later). Overly expensive for the quality - and when you have a divey place like this, the quality is the only thing that would keep me coming back. For a really spectacular gyro, you should be going to Golden Gyros on Lincoln Avenue in West Allis. Oakland Gyros is fine for drunk food, but no good for anything else.

    Did you ever notice that people have strong feelings about their favorite gyro place? I'm no exception to this rule. Maybe it's sentimentality that drives this, as I've been coming to Oakland Gyros since the late 1980's My sister and brother-in-law got me hooked on the place when they were in school and I was still a pipsqueak, and I've been coming ever since. It hasn't changed appreciably in that time, although they did open a second location. It's been run by the same family as long as I can remember - and they are always friendly, polite, happy and efficient. They are usually there during the day and into the evenings - after that, it transitions over to the folks they've trained - and service during those hours is still efficient, but certainly not as personalized.. Basics: they accept both cash and credit, and they open late in the morning (10 am ish) and close very late the next day (4 am ish). Order the gyro plate for a heaping mound of gyro meat, topped with onions, tomato, a pita, and your choice of starch (French fries or rice) served w a piece of feta and a few kalamata olives. Or just get an gyro, which doesn't have the added starch / olives / feta. My standard order: gyro plate w french fries and a side of the lamb gravy, and an gyro for my husband. As for the lamb gravy and tzatziki - we use them both as dipping sauces for the fries & gyro meat. The gravy is rich and decadent, which is well balanced by the acidity and bite of the tzatziki. This is way too much food for two, but we don't mind leftovers. Neither does our pup! I do love avgolemono soup - think of a thick chicken & rice soup, with a hint of lemon in it and you'll be on track. The downside to ordering it here - it's hot soup served in styrofoam, which always makes me wonder what else I'm putting into my body besides the soup! I will say that over the years, it's lost a bit of its richness and lemon flavor. Another favorite here for years and years is the chicken shish-kabob plate, served w lots of lemon & a side of lamb gravy. It usually has a nice char on it from the grill, although it can be a touch dry because it is breast meat. The lemon and gravy do work wonders on those dry pieces though! I know I'm biased, but I hope you'll give this place a try. It's a Milwaukee classic.

    Something that's open past midnight in MKE that's not George Webb's or a chain fast food restaurant. Thank the lord! Delicious if you are craving for something different after hours. The gyros here are too much. If you LOVE MEAT...you'd love it. They give you a heaping load of gyros meat that you can't even hold/eat as a sandwich...I ended up having to just eat it like a plate and still had leftover gyros meat. I guess it's good for the price you pay... You can definitely share one between two people if you're not starving. They don't give enough of the veggies in the gyros and I wish they include feta cheese in it. One thing I do like is that they have unlimited tzatziki sauce in bottles on the tables so I can liberally pour it over my gyros! Yum... Also...I got the Greek fries (w/ feta cheese) and the fries here were too soggy and thick for my liking.

    (3)
  • Angie O.

    OH HAPPY DAY! They do have a credit card reader now! :D This is the only place I know that serves Greek Fries with actual Feta. And a lot of it! My only recommendation: please include more delicious cucumber sauce in carry out orders. That one little tub doesn't go very far....

    I live in Madison and I would travel to Milwaukee just to get a gryro. I order mines with the rice w/o the sauce. Gosh! As I write this, I am craving one!

  • Kira W.

    Wow. We had read several reviews about this place and heard it was the best in Milwaukee for gyros. We ate there for lunch, and had the spinach pie and my dining partner had a regular gyro. Both came with french fries. They have cucumber sauce readily available. He loved his, I liked mine.,The portions were generous and the owner and the employees were extremely friendly. Some people might think the prices are a little high, but it is definitely worth it, at least for spinach pie. The con is that it attracts crazy people because if the location. I'm not that keen on getting sexually harassed while I am eating dinner.

    ~~~ A life saver ~~~ Short review. Open mouth, insert meat, eat and repeat.! The extended version.LP Many times I've been saved from driving and stumbling home under the influence. By the sobering properties of OG's sitting around while pretending to study?, laughing at the other drunks watching who is going to stumble and fall with their food and eat it off the ground. Who is going to leave the table with the most sauce on their face. During the day time You can always find a shepherd or Onion for entertaining reading while eating gyro sandwich with fries I usually get an extra pita to make an extra for later depending how much more of a pig that I was going to be. Late night expect a line of people to have the same thing on their minds.. that most college students want at 2:00 in the morning? Getting SOME!... Fresh Sliced meat of heavenly spiced Gyro flat fried in front and then making obscene sounds with a personal Bottle of Tzatziki. The past 5 times the onions were not as sweet as they were 10 years ago. But times change, no biggie I'm just glad they are still here. Did OG ever save a life? I believe they have! BTW there is another Oakland Gyro on Layton by the airport. Same name, go figure?
  • Jay S.
    Ever get a craving for a gyro or a greasy cheeseburger at 11 at night? This is a good place to go. The gyro sandwiches are huge. The Greek fries are piled with and topped with feta and (I think) olive oil. The cheeseburgers are greasy and delicious. The guys behind the counter are always friendly though often somewhat hurried. This place is pretty average as far as Greek fast food places go.
  • Krystin F.
    A trip to Oakland Gyros usually starts with a night at Axel's, let's face it, most of us go there with at least some alcohol in our systems and there's nothing wrong with that! The typical gyro consists of a grilled pita, a heaping pile of meat with onion, and a side of tzatziki sauce. Quantity really does make up for quality here! There are no frills, no pepperoncinis, feta cubes, or kalamata olives, just the basics. This makes me a little sad as I crave those extras, but at 2am you can't be that picky! I'm not a fan of their fries as they always seem limp to me, but that's okay, you can order a sandwhich without them or get a plate with salad or rice instead, I dig the options. I actually do know people who go there without the stereotypical drunkeness. They usually pick the fish fry or chicken kebobs and they like them! So don't pass on the old OG simply because they do most of their business in the earliest morning hours.
    (3)
  • Esther Y.
    I don't know how the ppl can say this place is just OK. I mean where can you find chicken that is jucier, better seasoned and just plain old good? It's surprisingly hard to find a good gyro spot (I can't even find a great one in chicago!) So, everytime I go to MIlwaukee, I try to make a trip to Oakland gyros. Like I said, the chicken is really good. If you get the platter, it's enough for two people to share. The rice is also the classic rice and it's good as well. I dont' really eat anything other than the chicken platter and the rice so I can't attest to the greasiness of the other food.
  • Alex E.
    Easily the best Gyros in the entire United States, I have had them all over the country and no where else even compares! Huge servings, reasonably priced at under $10.00. The building could use some renovations but if you are looking for great food and are not too worried about the infrastructure this is the place.
  • ryan h.
    i'm very spoiled when it comes to anything lamb. (i used to be a shepherd so when i was hungry i'd just chase down one of the weaker ones and snap his neck and then cook him right there.) ok, thats a lie, but living in ny i've had my fair share of some fresh tasty lamb products... when i go somewhere new i typically ask the people that work there what they think is the best thing on the menu or the most popular. I did this here and to my surprise it was not the gyro dish. it was like the rack or some giant piece of lamb.... sadly i was not impressed with this dish. i did like the fries and the fact i had free reign of the tzaziki. i need to go back and have the gyro dish, then maybe they can get a 4 or 5.
  • Rich T.
    their gyros simply can't be touched. OGs may be the preeminent east side late night snack. portions dwarf all others around town. great value.
    (4)
  • Nana H.
    The portions are huge -It really is one of the best Greek restaurants on the East-side. Service is really fast, depending when you go they do serve a lot drunks. You can call ahead and order. The prices are pretty reasonable. They only accept cash; there's an ATM in the lobby. I personally order the chicken shish kabob with the side of fries and I get my onions grilled.
  • Patrick M.
    Hands down the best gyros in MKE! I even went to Marquette and I would take an OG gyro or a Marquette gyro anyday. OG gyros, in my opinion, is the best cheap eat in town. Where else can you get a $5.00 sandwhich that has enough meat to fill you for two meals?! They heap on the meat into a warm pita laced with finely sliced tomatoes. Their Tzatziki sauce is off-the-chain! Oaklad Gyros is great anytime of the day, but the best time to visit is right after bar close on a weekend night when throngs of wasted UWM students enter. They will surely provide plenty of entertainment
    (5)
  • Sam E.
    Being a student of UWM i have been there way way way too many drunken nights or days when i'm sober and just can't get the idea of a pita filled with delisciousness and no matter how many times i eat there i can never get sick of it. The Gyro platter with the rice. They put a gravy on the rice thats the drippings from the lamb and it is amazing. I always get an extra pita for $1 for the mountain of meat you get. Whatever i don't finish i take home with me and wake up the next day and make an omlett with the gyro meat and its one of the most dilectable things for a hangover or breakfast.
  • Kate V.
    Awesome gyros, great service. Gets real busy at times but they're really polite and fast. The owner is there a lot and is always conscious of making sure you are happy.
    (5)
  • Carolyn E.
    The portions are mammoth, they serve drunks, etc etc. There's not a lot of vegetarian or even pesco-vegetarian friendly food here that isn't lacking flavor or lacking a trip to the deep fryer. However an order of spinach pie could easily serve 2-- and it's pretty tasty if spinach pie is your deal. Personally I prefer Grecian Delight-- a statement which is blasphemy among some of my dear friends. That is the reason why I go here; OG's is a stop made during legendary evenings that are talked about for years to come. (I'm torn about my rating, I want to give OG's 3.5 stars.)
    (4)
  • A K.
    Food is good and quantity is awesome. The only drawback they just take the cash. My personal fav - chicken sheek kabaab. The service is fast and as its in the Univ square during the weekend its like jam packed as its opened like 2am.
    (4)
  • Tom B.
    If you love Gyros, you won't be disappointed. Gyros are large and tasty. I've never bothered getting anything more than just the Gyro, as I can't imagine being able to eat more than that. Fast service. Would be better if it was a yogurt-based sauce instead of the sour cream-based sauce, but that seems to be a Wisconsin thing.
    (4)
  • Stephen S.
    For years I have loved this place and long to return to my Mecca of gyros! Best gyros in town! Awesome thick fries! EVERYTING on the menu is delicious! I prefer to take my food to go as there are sometimes to many wierdos in there, but to each his own. Service is always fast (unless it's bar time, then you'll be standing in line) and almost friendly (but never indifferenct or rude).
    (4)
  • Allyson U.
    I've been wanting to try oakland gyros forever now since I hear so much hype about it. It almost lived up to the hype. The food was good, I didn't find it overly greasy. The staff was great, very friendly, and singing along with the greek songs playing in the restaurant, it was cute. It was pretty decently priced, especially since the servings are so big you can share. However, I was expecting way better food since everyone raves about it. I have had much better greek food. But its close and cheap so I'll probably be going back, most likely when I'm drunk.
    a safe bet no matter what you get... try the custard. open late.
  • Anne H.
    Best Gyro in the world. The plate with the gyro, salad and fries, yummy! The secret sauce will make you so happy! Huge portions, but be wary, after bar hours it gets wild and crowded. If college drunks are not your scene, stick to lunch and dinner.
    (5)
  • Ashe D.
    Oakland Gyros has the best gyros around UWM, but their service and cleanliness are lacking. The portions are large, traditional Greek restaurant style.
    (3)
  • Balki B.
    I ooze the smell of gyro for weeks after I eat here. Whatever you do, don't bring leftovers home because you'll never get the smell out of your fridge. NEVER!
    (2)
  • Eric X.
    I give this place a 4 cause the food is tasty, although greasy. This *IS* your 2am bartime gyros shop. Head to Brady St's Apollo Cafe if they are open. Otherwise, this is the place to to cram your belly full of that shaped rotating spit meat we all know and love.
    (4)
  • Mike W.
    The best gyros on my side of town, but in Milwaukee there are gyro shops everywhere, and each usually very good. The portions are huge, ask for an extra pita and split it in two. Their chicken gyro is excellent too.
    (4)
  • Yan H.
    Oakland Gyros, you are an institution.... at the least for me you are. Open for what seems like ages "OG" has been a staple of the UW Milwaukee experience. . Now onto the food: The food portions here are very generous, especially if you get the lamb shank (good luck finishing it by yourself). Most of the greek dishes are good, but I am especially fond of the Athenian Chicken. It has an amazing red gravy/sauce that's sweet, savory and perfect if you get it with the rice pilaf option. According to the internet, this dish is called Chicken Kapama. Appropriately, the thread I found this information in was started by someone asking about food from specifically Oakland Gyros. Ever since Pizza-Man closed / burned down (so sad), I realize how rare places like OG is. Hopefully it sticks around for a long time. Ok... that's enough sentimentality out of me.
  • Asia C.
    The BEST GYROS thus far! I haven't even found a good gyros place in Chicago yet!!!! I used to get the gyros plate with rice and an extra pita. The reason for the extra pita was to share the plate with a friend or to wrap up for another day. The plate is huge. Them being open late night was SUPER convenient. I don't miss living in Milwaukee but I sure do miss Oakland Gyros!!!
  • Kevin K.
    Holy portions were so much bigger than I expected it to be... shiet.. I got so much food in my belly right now. I walked in and got on a roll when I was ordering my shiet. I got the gyro platter with additional meat with a strawberry milkshake and the baklava. I ordered all the shiet. Then it ended up being like 20 bux... but somehow I ended up going through with this and got all the shiet. Lesson of this story: they got big ass platters and give you so much shiet so y'all don't needa order additional meat. But definitely get the other shiet. Cuz that shiet was great. Like that baklava shiet was so good. And how y'all gonna hate on milkshakes. 4.5/5 rounded up to 5 for huge portions and good shiet.
    As per my talk conversation about take out in this neighborhood, we spend quite a bit of time eating out these days and Oakland Gyros is definitely in heavy rotation. I'm not a gyro eater, so I can't really comment on them - but the boyfriend is constantly asking to go back there, so I'm guessing that means he's happy with them. I get the chicken shish kebob, which is two seasoned chicken breasts cut up and served in substitute of the gyro meat - everything else in the presentation is the same. But it's a seriously huge amount of chicken. If you order a plain sandwich, that's what you're getting. But if you upgrade to the plate, you get basically twice as much meat, plus a side. I hate that when you order the plate to go they put the french fries on the bottom of the styrofoam container and pile everything on top. By the time you get home and eat enough of the other stuff to reach your fries, they're a soggy mess. Anyway, we always order an extra pita with the plate because there is always enough meat for a second sandwich. The extra pita is pricey at $1, but you'll get a second meal out of your order this way. There are only so many burgers and sub sandwiches a girl can eat, so I appreciate the proximity of Oakland Gyros to give me another option in my take out arsenal that isn't like anything else I can get around here.
    Get yer ass in here and have a bomb ass gyro. Every time I come here I can't wait until my next trip. I went with someone who was an Oakland Virgin and man was it hilarious. He spent $20. On himself. RIP his wallet. LOL but no man this place is good. And plus Usher has been there. SO it's gotta be good right? 5 out of 5 for being fucking awesome and serving me no matter how hammered I am.
    Excellent Gyros But even more excellent Athenian Chicken ! Love dat' red sauce on rice ! I remember this joint when the kitchen was on the south side wall, then they moved it to the west side wall sometime in 1988 or 89'. John was the owner. It's a family run business. Wonder how he's doing it's been years since I've seen him. We live close to Tarpon Springs, and they don't have anything on Oakland Gyros. Oh I remember the after bar scene well. It's part of the charm of this place. But if you don't want to deal with drunkin idiots, just go for lunch. Cheers !
    I have had a 12 year love affair with Oakland Gyros. I no longer stop in at bar close for that delicious lamb loaf as I have recently opted for the lunch time visits. Be warned that your gyro comes with enough meat to fill three pitas yet only one comes with your order. Plan accordingly.
    I don't think I've actually been to Oakland Gyros for at least 5 years now, maybe more. I can't say that I ever frequented this fine establishment, but -- much like everyone and anyone else who attended UWM -- I'm most certainly guilty of having visited at bar time at least three or so times in my collegiate undertaking(s). Okay. Maybe more than three. Who's counting? I'm not. The food is not that good, but when you've come from a house party across the street where the Pabst and the Kessler flow like an infinite crystal spring, you don't really give a rat's tukus. A huge bottle of tzatiki, yes. Huge portions, yes. My fried bartime snack of choice (breaded mushrooms)? Check. Bad? No. Good? Not really. Nowadays, I rock Apollo when I'm craving gyro-y goodness. But honestly, this place is a UWM staple. It's an institution. It's a rite of passage to spend time at Oakland Gyros at 3am. If you don't, you've probably never overindulged at a house party. Kudos then, to you... for your self-restraint and your WOW tournaments or whatever. This spot should probably win an award, though... for providing gyros and breaded mushrooms, etc. to hungry, drunken UWM kids for years. OG, I'm sure you've seen countless fights and mishaps with bodily functions and stupid, stupid antics galore. For that, I salute you, Oakland Gyros.
    I had a hankerin' for a gyro one day and remembered that I live right down the street from the gyro joint I used to frequent after bar close. I guess these gyros are only good after a night of boozing it up, because I just kept thinking how dry, greasy, and tough the meat was and ended up tossing most of it out. I did not feel good afterwards and will not return. I don't like my food making me feel sick. I'd recommend the new place down the street if you want something that you won't regret later. Plus they deliver for those days when I am recovering from the night before.
    I have been there over the years and it has always been known for incredibly fast service, tasty food, generous servings and low prices. I went there again this week for a lamb shank. About twenty seconds after I ordered, I had my food. The rice pilaf side dish is was far better than any stale fries that too many similar restaurants offer. If I was younger, I would have had the baklava, too. The food was enough for two meals and a far better choice than the other offerings in the area. You can never go wrong with these guys.
    Oakland Gyros. It's gyros, what do you want to me to say? They're hot, greasy, big, and delicious. Did you expect something in-depth? Some paeon to Ancient Greece? The bloody Illiad? Get out of town. They're freaking delicious, they have gigantic squeeze bottles of cucumber sauce, and now, best of all, THEY TAKE CREDIT CARDS. Good God (Gods?), but Visa has come to the Pantheon. It's a freaking miracle. I will say it's a bit dodgy that the lingua franca behind the register is Spanish, but this is America after all, and the restaurant business is dominated by those from South of the Border, but it's a little strange nonetheless. But hell, it's cutting meat off a gigantic turning skewer. I doubt you need to have been born in Mykonos to pull that off.
    I found my self the area and heard many people say its the place to go so I went. It's not the best but it's all meat. It's ok but be very hungry if you go. The onions were very strong and plentiful and I still can't get the taste out of my mouth so get them on the side. The sauce was not the best and very watery/loose. For $5.29 what can I say. Capitol cafe is still my favorite.
    A friend recommended this place to me. I was in town and said I would be near UWM, and a friend said I had to check out Oakland Gyros. Also told me that one gyro really equals one to eat now and enough for a second one later. So the advice was to order a pita on the side and make that happen more easily. First impressions: the neighborhood is scuzzy. Lots of bums walking around, some screaming at each other, in the middle of the day. One guy cupped his hand around the window and looked in, and the man eating at the table in front of that window didn't even seem fazed. Another person was whistling at full volume on the sidewalk next to the place. But there were a number of college students, decent city people, and older folks around too. I did get the vibe that you need your street smarts, and I felt saddened that there's so much poverty and decay around the university. Was real surprised to see a Five Guys on the opposite corner, since all the other Five Guys I know are in suburban-style strip malls. Once inside, the restaurant is spacious. Everyone working was Greek. FAST order, it was less than two minutes to get my gyro. It came wrapped in paper and foil and so did the extra pita. The pita came with a block of feta cheese and olives - a nice touch I had not seen before. The pita bread was very tasty and solid. I was surprised to see that the cucumber sauce was in a tub instead of on the gyro - all of the Chicago gyro places I know of put it right on the sandwich. It is true about the amount of food you get for $7. I thought it was tasty. They had Greek music playing on the speakers and if you take a window seat you get a view of a very diverse and lively, very urban street scene. People in the restaurant and outside are interesting.
    I stopped in for a late lunch. I had the gyro platter. Generous portion of meat and fries. Really great taste. The price was right. Great place. Parking is sketchy.
    There are few things that I stand and wait for. There is also never a time that I don't crave a double cheese. So, this is one of the few things that I stand and wait for.
    If you intend on going there after 9pm, don't. The staff is incredibly unfriendly. The cashier made an offensive comment about my sister in Spanish, thinking I didn't know any Spanish. The manager must hire cheap staff which is likely Central American immigrants who are criminals, or close to it. My food was very disappointing, I could have got McDonalds for less and it probably would've been higher quality. The derogative comments the staff makes about female patrons is awful, and obviously they expect no one to understand Spanish. I will not recommend any of my friends to go there. The staff is entirely unprofessional and management obviously doesn't care. Want some disrespectful mexican punks to serve you food? Then this is the place for you.
    You don't have to be a drunk or high college student to eat at Oakland Gyros... but it helps! *drum hit!* Of course I'm kidding, but that may indeed be the reputation OG is always going to have. This IS the place that is actually still connected to the bar next door, which supposedly used to be used so you wouldn't have to go through the painful experience of having to stop drinking in order to eat there. Ah, the good ol' days. But beyond the reputation is a great local restaurant that serves (among other Greek offerings) delicious cut-straight-from-the-spit gyro meat for cheap. The gyro deluxe is usually so loaded with meat that we often buy a second pita to accommodate it all. If not, make sure you grab a fork. And yes, the PRO TIP here is that you can order whatever amount of gyro meat you want and eat it plain, take it home, make it into a sandwich, or whatever else you want to do with it - that's your business. No judging.
    Have you ever had a food joint as a pivotal moment of change in your life? Maybe it was the cafeteria when you were younger where you realized your could substitute the fries with tater tots opening your eyes to change. Maybe it was that restaurant where you met your favorite woman/man that you're still with. Maybe it was an epic night where you got 10 free drinks, four numbers and you felt uncomfortable because it was the restaurant that you met your significant other at and she happened to be there...and its 2 pm. That is essentially Oakland Gyro's to me. It opens your taste buds to something new, that first after party food establishment that makes your mouth water, keeps the conversation going and keeps your mind and your senses tingling to the very last bite. Maybe it would have to do with the alcohol intoxication at every time I go, but the fries are perfectly crisp, the lamb meat is perfectly seasoned, and the memories always keep coming. The only thing that could change here is how many times you go to it.
    O.G.'s Baby. If you don't know about Oakland Gyros, I can only begin by saying it's a classic joint. It's one of those places that should be on the visit list if you're from out of town, and is probably already on your regular list if you live in Milwaukee. That said, it is a mostly college crowd and the atmosphere can get very roudy come bartime. If you can tolerate that or if you're between the ages of 18-28, you'll probably have a fantastic time. I went to UWM several years back and it served up some of the best memories I have from Milwaukee. You didn't come here to listen to me talk about college though, you want to know what this place is like. Without Further Adou- When you walk in, it's going to look like any shabby-style burger/grease joint that you would see in say Chicago, but the staff is extremely helpful and the service is prompt. You'll usually get your order inside of 2 minutes, and of course I recommend the gyro because they give you a gigantic pile of yummy meat and a container or two of some of the best cucumber sauce I've had. A lot of people like to compare Parthenon to O.G.'s, but after living in both Madison and Milwaukee for many years, Parthenon can take a hike. The reason why O.G.'s is a classic though is for its post-bar atmosphere. This is the place to go when you and friends have gone out and had a terrific night and want to cap it off with some eats and conversation. Rolling into this fine establishment at 2 or 3am will definitely put in an impression. It's usually packed at that time (as in almost every table is full of kids having fun), and your bound to see some hilariousness (whether it be someone so drunk they fell over, food flying off a table, a cheering session among everyone there, or some ragamuffin outside causing a stir). And the staff is admirable during this time, from helping people up, delivering waters to those they can tell are overboard, to giving cigarettes to smokers in the need. It's truly a fabulous time. I gave it four stars though because from this review you can see what kind of a place it is, as in NOT a place for everyone. It'll also be disappointing in a year or two when I just get too old to go there anymore. But if your in college or just graduated a few years ago, put it on your short list and get some dang good food.
    Zorba-sized gyros with light-as-a-cloud yogurt sauce. Perfection. Give yourself permission to try the seasoned curly fries. And contrary to an earlier review, they are now taking credit/debit cards, albeit with a bit of a sneer.
    Love this place. Love that nothing has changed. Love that I can get an amazing Spinach pie and fries for under 10 bucks. It can be a little wild in here at night, but I have never had a Spinach pie here that I did not like. In fact, I bailed on the long wait at Beans and Barley to come here and put that super Spinach pie in my tummy. I am a vegetarian so I don't eat the Gyros, and since I am a big fan of Greek food done up Chicago Greek town style let me just say that most of the amazing Greek food that can be made is not served at your typical Gyros shop, but this place keeps it real by making the Spanokopita like a Greek grandmother would for her boy Yiorgos after a day of herding goats! You can hear the bells ringing when you sit down to eat the pie!
