At least No 1 didn't give me the No 2's. Actually, the food was the best part of it. We strolled in for lunch at about 11:45 on a Thursday. One would think that they would be expecting customers, but apparently we took them by surprise. We stood at the counter for at least five minutes, maybe it was ten, before anyone emerged from the back and acknowledged our existence. Once we were seated, things were fine. I had General Tsao's and my brother had Orange Chicken. Both entrees were pretty damn good. The chicken had a nice crispness to it with just the right amount of heat; a nice, slow burn. We each ordered the large portions and there were plenty of leftovers. The interior of the restaurant is nothing to write home about. Think West Allis elementary school cafeteria. All in all, it was better than I expected. I'll be back. I've learned to expect south side Chinese food to be pretty weak, but this No 1 was A-OK. Bye the way, why the hell does Orange soda go so well with Chinese food?

This place is terrible!!!!!! We waited for 2 hours to get our food for delivery and it still didn't come!! WOW! The worst service I've ever had! So disappointing! :(

Everything from finding metal shavings in the food, to having part of your entree forgotten and having them refuse to remove the entree from the bill, makes this place No.1 in crappy service. My hundreds of Chinese food yearly dollars are better spent else where.

I have been coming here for quite a few years and have never had a bad experience. After many visits the food has always been excellent. They did lose 1 star because the service can be spotty. They do a big take out business and I think they sometimes forget someone is actually dining in and expects service. The soups and crab rangoon are especially good. I usually order a shrimp dish. The shrimp tastes fresh and the portions are generous. I will happily keep coming back.

No option for gluten free and the person who answered the phone claimed they couldn't do non breaded chicken. Really crappy service, don't bother ordering from here.

Was OK, Wish Bay View had a better selection of Asian restaurants. And a hate TV going in a restaurant.

Good place to get some lunch at a reasonable price. I had the Mongolian chicken and it twas decent. You definitely need to ask for their yummy sauce ~ it's yummy! It will take your dining experience to a whole new level! Of note, the decor is severely lacking....I would recommend take out only.

My girlfriend and I stopped in to No. 1 Chinese Restaraunt almost on a whim. We were in Bayview, wanted to try somewhere we hadn't been before, and I'd been in the mood for Chinese. The Yelp reviews were pretty positive, so we thought it was worth a shot. We were wrong. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. First of all, the decor left something to be desired. The place is dimly lit by flourescent tubes that cast a yellow light on everything, causing a sort of sickly, jaundiced effect on the sparsely furnished room. But that's fine. I mean, I've eaten at places far scuzzier and still had a great meal. The menu looked impressive, and we were hopeful. I was particularly intrigued by the selection of vegetarian meat substitutes. We were plagued by communication problems with our server, however, and found ordering an arduous, almost impossible task. I ended up getting the General Tso with the vegetarian chicken and my partner got Chicken (actual meat) with Mixed Vegetables. We had some reservations due to our experience thus far, but were still cautiously hopeful. (I will admit though that I was somewhat sullen after being unable to order any soup thanks to the above mentioned communication problems.) As soon as the food arrived, we knew we were in for disappointment. Hers looked bland, like the kind of thing you might get in a mall food court or in a strip mall somewhere, and that's about how it tasted. Mine left me wishing for bland. I've been a vegetarian for over ten years, and I've had every meat substitute and soy protein there is. I've never had something as truly terrible as the strange little balls of, well, whatever they were. They were dense and tough and difficult to chew, and they did not taste very good at all. I couldn't finish my meal, and for the first time ever I wanted to walk out on a restaurant without paying. We didn't, of course, but there is absolutely no way either of us would ever eat at No 1 Chinese ever again.

I really enjoy the food. It is always fresh and delicious. The shrimp egg foo young is my favorite! Can't wait to try their sushi.

Bland food that took 1.5 hours to arrive by delivery. It fills the void, but I'd rather order almost anything else.

This had been one of our favorite Chinese restaurant for delivery, but lately they have been hit or miss. I think it has to do with the rotation of the cooks. We might hold off from ordering from here for a while.

Agree with Jeb E. whatever you do do not order the veggie "meat". Grossest thing I've ever tasted and ended up throwing my meal in the garbage. Can't speak for the real meat dishes but we will not go back.

Just ate here for the first time tonight, and was sorely disappointed. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken, which I had read was one of their better dishes. Literally the first bite of chicken had a bone in it! Yuck! I decided to keep eating, but it didn't get much better from there. Pieces of the chicken were really tough, to the point that I thought there were more bones. Other pieces didn't have any chicken at all, and were only breading! Ok, granted I only tried one dish. Maybe the vegetarian dishes are better, I'm definitely not going to be having a meat dish here again. In fact, I won't be eating here again at all. Bummer.

There was a report on this place on TMJ 4 (3/2012). Apparently they had 3 pages of health code violations! Hard to recommend them after hearing that.

Number 1 is a classy little establishment. It's the Chinese food anchor for this stretch of KK. The service, while not stellar, is quick (if you're eating in; I have no experience with the delivery), and the food is good. I usually go for the Kung Pao or General Tso's chicken. The lunch special makes it pretty cheap, which certainly helps. The egg rolls tasted a bit over fried, but the main course has never disappointed. Great day-after-party food. And they were open the day after the blizzard this year! That's dedication.

I can easily think of one word to describe this: HORRIBLE. The food tasted of a musty freezer. I can only assume that they pulled our takeaway entrees out of the freezer and nuked them in the plastic trays they were served in. We had one meat entree and one mock-meat entree. Both were shockingly bad in texture, taste, and freezer smell. The sauces were horrible. Its not worth any more review than that. Yes, they definitely earned their No 1 status. This is now officially the worst food I've eaten from a restaurant. Can't think of one worse.

I haven't read the reviews for the other locations but the ratings look shockingly low. I've only ever had positive experiences here. I mean, if you eat in you would be advised to expect less than stellar service but the food is good, especially for vegetarians since they have multiple kinds of meat substitute in a variety of dishes and it's something different, which I love. I love the General Tso's "Vegetable-Chicken" most of all.

While there is certainly better Chinese to be had in Milwaukee the food here is better than average. The low prices and fast delivery also are a plus. Chinese choices in Bay View are limited so this works when I don't want to trek to the Third Ward or East Side for chinese.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
