I stop in to this place every couple of weeks and just love their pork shoulder dinner. My favorite sauce is the mustard based one, and their midwest sauce is my second choice. I do not care for the sweetness of their root beer bbq sauce. These guys would get all 5 stars if they worked on their side items. In my perfect world, potato salad and coleslaw should be scratch-made. Both of these sides are bland and mayo-based. Seems like an opportunity to take things to the next level.

Milwaukee's favorite smoke shack. Their smoked beans have a great flavor and a little surprise as you find small chunks of meat mixed in. Their cole slaw is cool and creamy, which pairs well with any choice of smoked and pulled/shredded meats. I also like that you can sauce the meat to your liking with 6 different sauce offerings.

I haven't written a Yelp review in a while now, but I NEED to call someone out... First of all... Some guy named Chris G. posted on here saying this food shack is "defrauding" its customers by adding a 3% surcharge to their checks. He probably didn't realize someone that works in credit card security would read his review. Adding a surcharge is legal in Wisconsin providing there is legal disclosure; in this case, the disclosure is on the receipt. This became industry norm in 2013. Check this link for more info: usa.visa.com/download/me… But down to the food. It's good. If you live in this neighborhood, the smell of smokey BBQ on a hot day is intoxicating. The meat is good, as are the rolls their sandwiches are served on. I've enjoyed the sauces I've tried, and I have never been able to finish off one of the large portions. I've enjoyed their mustard sauce the most. The sides are just meh. Then again, I'm from New Orleans and used to "real" red beans and rice. I've never disliked any of the sides I've had here, they just aren't as tasty as the meat. But back to Chris G., it looks like you're the only review on here that has had a completely terrible experience with the staff on a personal level. When you don't tip (in this case, you are tipping *the kitchen*, not the guy at the cash register) and accuse the owners of stealing money from their customers, it doesn't surprise me that your orders will get in line behind customers that are willing to wait patiently instead of making a big production. I have never had to wait more than 15 minutes for freshly made food.

I enjoy two things from here, the smoked beans and the hot sausage. Wow - cannot go wrong with those! I ventured off to try the chicken once and found that it's nothing to write home about and also tried the rib sandwich a couple times, which is also nothing to write home about except maybe to mention its saltiness. HOWEVER - those smoked beans are amazingly delicious and I will go just for those. Whatever you do, make sure you get them!

These guys know how to make BBQ. I have had their brisket and chicken, and they were both tremendous. They have four different sauces and a moderate amount of sides. They are also friendly, nice guys. This should be the go-to place for take out BBQ in Bay View and the whole South Side.

Excellent pit smoked BBQ. I had ribs, shredded beef and chopped pork. They cook a load of Q fresh each day and when it's gone, they close . Don't go at 8:00 on Saturday night.. Am writing this in the parking lot. I'm home now and tasting seriously. My first impression was that I liked the ribs best and the beef least. The beef is very complex, with garlic added after the meat is shredded and it has a bery nice, slow build of heat. The pork is very good as are the ribs. None of this stuff needs sauce, taste it plain before you goober it all up...

Best BBQ in Milwaukee. Yep. The ribs here are so good. Guy workin there seemed friendly enough. Motorcycle magazines to read while you wait for your food. Dig.

Meh, I'm done with this place. First the good. The BBQ is pretty good. I have had better, I had worse from my college cafeteria. The portions however are not a good deal for the price. OK, that's the end of the positives. Reasons they have been added to my boycott list. There is a 3% added fee if you use your credit card. There is a 3% fee added if you use a debit card. This is a violation of Wisconsin law. You are allowed to charge a fee of up to 4% (or the cost from the POS service I believe.) I checked, assuming he has less than $5000/month in sales, his fee is 2.5%+.20 a transaction. Over a year of sales, this is a tidy little profit, in fact an extra six grand a year for defrauding his customers. I would love an extra six grand a year, but not by cheating my customers. I own a small business. Part of the cost of doing business is credit card fees. Don't like it? Don't take credit cards, but your business will drop. Also related to payment, after paying by credit card, the guy flips the kiosk around and says, this is where you tip. What, tip? This is take out, and pretty horrible service on top of that (see next part.) However, they pretty much blackmail you into adding a tip onto you order. Argh! I went in a half hour early to order because past history has shown me they are SLOW. So hoping the order would be ready when I told them I would be back, I ordered ahead of time. When I got back, it took another 20 minutes to get the food. These guys are unfriendly. There is nothing about their attitude when ordering that they appreciate my business. Are you the equivalent of the Soup Nazi for BBQ? OK, you can get away with that. These guys are not. They make me to get the heck out of there as fast as I can and not come back. Now I remember why there has been over a year between visits. I hear a new place with an outdoor smoker is opening on Howell soon, I'll be checking that place out. Milwaukee Smoked BBQ, your attitude and law breaking ways will be having me steer clear.

Very very good food. Awesome for feeding groups or family gatherings. Great meat. I would highly recommend. I suggest asking for extra sauce. The only down fall is they close to early.

Pretty solid BBQ for this side of town. There are a few choices if you're south of the city and if you're going to make the best choice of those few this is the one. I stumbled across this place when I was driving around looking for something different and local and this place was pleasantly still open and had food available so I said why not and boy was I surprised...good, local barbecue near Bay View. Order the ribs of the pork and you won't be disappointed.

This is smoked BBQ. I often eat mine without the sauce, especially the ribs and pulled pork. What you must know: Ambiance Plan to carry-out your BBQ gems because it is located in a concerted motorcycle shop. It's clean, simple, and focused on the food. There is not room for seating inside, but on a nice day, you could set up on the picnic table outside. Food I dream about their pulled pork. It was wonderfully delicious with a perfect smoky flavor. And if you have some leftover, I recommend it with some scrambled eggs the next day. I go for just the vinegar sauce because it is the only gluten free option (and also wonderful) but you can select several different sauces to try. My husband loves the Midwest sauce which is a pretty traditional BBQ sauce. But you may not even need it. Ribs fall off the bone and have an incredible flavor. Each bone will be clean by the time you are done. They also have amazing sausages that are a perfect lunch option. For sides, I've enjoyed the red beans and rice which has a great bit of kick to them. I obsess over their potato salad. Classic mustard potato salad that is filled with flavor and a wonderful compliment to the entrees. Tips: - Great gluten-free options. Since the sauce isn't all over everything, you can order all the meats and use the vinegar sauce. - Plan to carry-out. - Once it's gone, it's gone. You may wish to order ahead or call ahead especially later in the evening. - Great option for game day - we ordered for several Packers parties and it was wonderful to have something fast and easy and that always seems to please the crowd. Milwaukee Smoked BBQ: never change.

People seem nice and friendly. Food is average or below. I tried their half slab ribs and chicken. The chicken was nice - similar to what you get at Rotisserie chicken for 1/3 the price at super markets - and the rotisserie chicken is much hotter. The chicken piece I got from here was barely warm - I had put it in a thermal flask to take home but no luck. The ribs were falling off the bone but were not very tasty. Their midwest bbq sauce was ok. Not bad and not great. I didn't care for their mustard bbq sauce. I am not an expert at bbq but I thought it would be better if the bbq sauce were to be poured on to the ribs and cooked at the end with the sauce - that would caramelize the sauce.. That is the way I like it. Perhaps I am mistaken? Anyway, I am no expert at bbq.. but meh! I would like better ribs.. If you know of the best rib place in town, please send me a message.. Oh, btw, this is a carry out only service.

I love this place. The food is amazing. I love the pulled pork with mustard based sauce. But the brisket is also delicious and so are the ribs. The sides are good but I would stick with the meat. All of the meat had a perfect texture, not too mushy and flavorful with out being salty or greasy. They have a great selection of sauces to choose from. They also catered my wedding and the pork and brisket were amazing, absolutely perfect. I ate at a lot of BBQ places to find one for the wedding and this place is hands down the best in the city. The only downside is the hours, I wish they were open later.

Best BBQ in Milwaukee. Picked up 1lb Pulled Pork, 1lb Pulled Beef, 1 full rack of ribs... 4 of us in the office... Ribs were perfect, no sauce required hands down winner of the order. Both the Beef and Pork were amazing but I think I have to give it to the Pork. Only suggestion, Smoked Sausage by the Pound?? That would have been Overkill in the best possible way. Vinegar Sauce was perfect, didn't even try the rest... I'll just have to go back and try it again!

This review is of the pork shoulder/brisket tailgate party special. Salty! The meats were slow cooked and the texture was perfect. They offer shredded meat so for those of you looking for sliced pork shoulder and beef brisket you won't find that here. The meat was very salty. It was fine for sandwiches, but alone the salt levels were enough to raise grandma's blood pressure. I am not sure if this is a common thing, but I hope they don't over-salt the way it was when we had our two pounds. The salt is the only reason I am not giving that 4th star. The neon sign is cool. The small shop feel of the place is cool. Best to call ahead since there is not much room in the place. The rolls came in white and wheat and were awesome! Perfect rolls. Loved them. The potato salad kicked but. Plain and simple and awesome. We got 4 sides (2 potato salad, 1 cole slaw, 1 rice/beans). All were good. They have Black Bear sodas in the fridge. When I was a kid I would go to the bottling plant with my dad and brother and get Black Bear by the case. Authentic South Side! Way to go. Now, a good friend who likes the North Side BBQ places that are famous said "white folks don't cook good BBQ" when I mentioned the salt, but because everyone was so nice I will go back here and give them another shot, and our two big bags of food was only $38.00... which is a pretty good deal. We got two big boxes of shredded meat, and the 8 rolls went fast. You might want a dozen of those amazing rolls since you have enough meat to feed 8-10 people I bet - unless you are feeding pro wrestlers. Other folks were ordering the ribs, and we heard good things from the folks waiting for the pickup, but based on Linda H's review these are also prepared with enough salt to kill ya... It is nice to have these former Harley mechanics cooking BBQ on the South Side/Bay View. Ease up on the salt boys.

I work down the street from MKE Smoked BBQ and so I decided to give it a try. I ordered the Smoked Chicken sandwich with the North Carolina BBQ sauce (vinegar based), and it was delicious. The sandwich was on a small hoagie which was the perfect size. The chicken was tender and juicy and seasoned/smoked perfectly. I went around noon and could not believe there was not a line, or really anyone there for that matter. I'm from St. Louis so I'm used to lines out the door and around the corner for BBQ around noon. Anyways, it was really good and I can't wait to go back and try other items!

Motorcycle repair shops are lame. Smoked meats are awesome. And while this general creed of mine which I just made up may be the driving force behind Milwaukee Smoked BBQ, it wasn't a complete home run for me. The concept is great, the presentation slicker than you might expect, and the menu full of surprises like a Sprecher root beer barbecue sauce. I got the pulled pork sandwich, largely because it seemed like the only thing they still had on hand (a good sign). Technically speaking, it was exceptional, with a buttload of tender pork shoved into a crusty hoagie roll that did wonders towards sopping up all the juice that pork was leaving behind. The only thing lacking for me was smoke, as I didn't really taste it nor see it in a smoke ring or bark. Still, I'd rather have a pork sandwich that was tender and lacking in smoke than one that was smoky and dry, if only because the former still tastes good. I didn't even need the sauce, though I tried them anyway. I enjoyed both, though despite the root beer in one, they didn't strike me as exceedingly different. Sides were interesting - rather than taking a Southern influence, they took one that's Creole. The spicy rice was a wild rice blend was indeed spicy from a bit hit of cayenne, and along with the onion and green pepper, reminded me as much of the bayou as if I had red beans and rice - something which they also offer. In terms of Milwaukee barbecue, this is very well done. Certainly not as well-rounded as something like Smoke Shack, but more than enough to fit the needs of Howard and Whitnall.

I love MKE Smoked BBQ. We live right around the corner and go about once a week. The chicken, ribs, pork... it's all very, very tasty. The customer service is always extremely friendly too. Highly recommend.

I've been here a few times and I wish I would go more! ribs are amazing and the pulled pork with the North Carolina bbq sauce is the way to go for a quick lunch. The smell when you first walk in mesmerizes you. A must stop place in Bay View/St. Francis.

They have some mean St. Louis Style ribs. I drove by this place on my way home from work just to give it a try. I walked about with a rack of ribs and a pound of their pulled pork. Very, Very tasty. The pulled pork was incredibly moist with the perfect amount of seasoning. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone delicious. It's hard to find good BBQ on the South Side, unless you can do it well or know how to crash a neighbors picnic. But, this place is my new stopping place when I'm coming home from work to watch the game. It just started... I wish they had more options and had ribs all the time. Call ahead to ask if they have any ribs left before you go. I left with a frownie face when they did not have any when I stopped in one day. They still made up for it with the pulled Chicken... but, it is still worth calling ahead.

Small Menu, Huge Flavor! I gotta admit, at first I was bummed that this former motorcycle shop closed because I was looking forward to taking my new bike there. But as they say, when one door closes, the BBQ pit opens. Or something like that... So when I heard that the owner was going to switch from motorcycles to BBQ, I was pretty excited nonetheless. This is a very unassuming little store front. It doesn't call attention to itself and could be relatively easy to miss if it weren't on a corner. In all honesty, I think it's still a bit easy to miss. But once you've tried their meat, you'll never drive past it again. As you walk in there is a tiny lobby with a small counter. This is take-out only. I mean... I suppose you could sit in one of their courtesy chairs and eat your food. And considering the flavor of it, I don't think anyone would blame you for ripping into it right away like a penguin in a tuna factory. But I like to think we humans have some amount of personal restraint. There isn't a whole lot on their menu either. A handful of sandwiches, a handful of meats (by-the-pound), and a handful of sides. So let's get down to it: THE GOOD: Everything I've tried so far has been excellent. Tender, juicy meat, with well-crafted seasonings, and just the right amount of smoky goodness! Something that I will remember for a long time is the pulled pork sandwich. It was just BBQ pork on a bun. No sauce, no onions, no dressing, no nothing (although, they ask if you'd like sauce). The pork was seasoned and cooked perfectly. It's easy to overcook meat until it falls apart. It's another thing entirely to BBQ it just the right amount of time so it's tender but has bite, and also retains its natural flavor. And that is precisely what I received. In addition, it has a nice mild rub that bridges the flavor gap between smoke and pork. Their sauces are also very good. Beats the hell out of any runny crud you'll find in the grocery store. I think they have 3 different (very distinct) sauces. I've tried 2. One was a Carolina-style sauce that is good on pork. The other was a midwest-style sauce that works better with chicken. Both were terrific and really gave me a true contrast of what one would find in different regions. THE NOT SO GOOD: You can't stop in at any time of the day and expect everything on the menu to be available. I've went early in the day and ribs weren't ready, or beans weren't done yet. But ya know, it's that low-volume that make them capable of producing such great meat. THE BAD: Ummm... nothing. THE OPINION: The chicken appeared to be a mix of white and dark. Which I love because using both sides of the chicken really adds a different dimension to both the texture and the flavor. And it was good... but I (personally) would have liked it a little bit more mild. The seasonings were good, but the heat was a little high. It overpowered the meat a bit. Although, the smoky flavor was still prominent and melted my taste buds. I do think their plain pulled pork on a bun is a sandwich worth remembering. But while I ate it I kept thinking to myself that they could really produce some outstanding, fully-loaded sandwiches built around their meats. So it's not so much that it could have used something extra. It's just that their meat is worthy of having recipes created around it. And I think that's saying a lot. THE WEIRD: Well... it's not "weird". But I would like to shed some light on their customer service. Great customer service is very important to me. And you will find it here. Although, that may not be readily apparent. These are men that ride motorcycles and smoke meat. You're not going to walk in to arms wide open and tears rolling down their cheeks. They are straight-shooters. And they will happily answer any questions you have for them. They seem to enjoy what they do, and are happy making other peoples' bellies full. So, you can expect them to give you great food and give it to you straight without the "dog-and-pony" show.

Literally falling off the bone ribs. I loved them and was well worth $12.50. What I felt wasn't worth the extra cash was $2 sauce (and the cup wasn't even half way full) and the $3 side, the smoked beans. Would have preferred baked beans and maybe some corn on the cob or corn bread. At most places you get sauce and a side included in the $12.50. Will definitely be back for ribs (ill probably make my own sides) or a pulled pork sandwich. Can't wait to try their other meats!!! Oh and the guy working there (the owner perhaps) was really friendly and service was super speedy. So glad BBQ is in the neighborhood.

Talked to Brian, and love the story of transforming their motorcycle shop into awesome BBQ on the south side. Had the pulled pork sandwich w/ Carolina sauce. Meat was so good you didn't need the sauce, but it added some good flavor on top of it. My wife had the shredded beef sandwich and said it was an "explosion of flavor". Well worth trying, carry out only. Last time I checked, unless you want typical fast food from the area, you won't get a meal of the same caliber for around $10. For a new place and a great first time experience, I'll give them a good rating and we'll be back again.

I was in the area and decided to give these guys a try. It's a tiny place, no interior seating, just a counter to order from, a bathroom and the kitchen. I was hoping that I could get something akin to a sampler platter so I could try smaller portions of multiple meats. Other than a rib and chicken combo, my hopes of a sampler platter were soon dashed. I ordered 1/2 lb brisket, 1/2 rack of ribs and their spicy beans. The brisket was an abomination. It was served all chopped into tiny pieces in some sort of au jus, this was far from how I have had it served, sliced thin against the grain. The way the meat was served I couldn't even ascertain if the brisket ever achieved a "smoke ring" when it was cooked. And much like other reviews the biggest flavor coming out of the meat was salt. The ribs looked promising, but the exterior texture was off. I don't know if that was due to the ribs being wrapped in foil or just an over zealous application of dry rub. The meat on the ribs was fall off the bone, I will credit them for that. The spicy beans were fine, I was told there was habaneros mixed in and I never got the kick I was expecting. There's one picnic table outside and the view of Whitnall and Howard are not so breathtaking.

This place is my new fave for BBQ in Milwaukee. Good brisket, amazing pulled pork and the ribs are some of the best I've had. Wish list: lay off the salt just a tad. Some items are just a tad salty, and would just be more enjoyable with a bit less salt. In fact, that's really the only reason that I didn't give this place 5 stars. Also, please fill up the sauce cups or use smaller cups. Frustrating to run out of sauce when the cup was only filled half way to begin with.

I skipped the gym and decided to stop at this place. Well this place has a Simple menu, clean place, but the food it was not that great. I'm not saying it's horrible but like my other fellow yelpers said, the meat has a little bit too much salt. I wish I could say that I'll give them a second chance.

Got the Family "2 lbs of meat + 4 sides + 8 rolls" and 2 Sprechers. We chose pork and turkey and got the rootbeer and midwest sauce. We paid ~$40 for everything mentioned, which I think was a bit high (comparing to the likes of Smoke Shack or Speed Queen). The pulled pork was very tender and tasted pretty good, where as the turkey was a bit dry and spices used were a bit heavy. The sauces has good flavor, but could be a little less runny. Two big complaint about the online menu is it does not list prices and the sides are extremely limited. Despite the criticism, the food was good enough to try some other things off the menu. After having the pulled pork I have high hopes for the sandwich and potentially the ribs.

This is a great place to stop if you're in the area. They have four different kinds of sauces and a couple different kinds of barbecue. I would recommend getting half pulled pork and half beef. You might want to buy a pound for yourself or you'll find yourself coming back later that day

  • Rebecca S.

Yeah buddy. We stopped here this afternoon for an order of pulled pork and a rack of ribs. No question about it, this was some of the best pulled pork I've ever had. Like other reviewers mentioned, it doesn't even need sauce. The ribs were also incredible; they were fall-off-the-bone delicious.

I just had pappys BBQ in St. Louis mo earlier in the week and it was fantastic as usual. Today I thought BBQ would be on the lunch menu and I would try a new place. I drive over and find it was take out only OK. I walked up and there was no smell of smoke. I walked in and no smell of smoke again. I ordered the full slab and asked what my side options were and I was told it didn't come with any sides. Every other BBQ place has sides with the meat. That's fine because I only care about the BBQ. The guy rings me up and says $25.20 which I thought was hi compared to other BBQ places I have been to that come with sides. I drive home and realize that the car doesn't smell like smokey BBQ. I get home and unwrap the foil and the slab looks like it has a nice bark and color because I get the sauce on the side so the meat is on its own. I dive in to the ribs and it's not very smokey at all and I get hit with how very salty they are so maybe the salt over powered the smoke flavor. The texture was like boiled pot roast and they did fall off the bone. They were so salty that after a 1/4 of the rack was gone I could not eat any more and threw them away. Even dipping them in sauce I could not take it any more. This was a swing and a miss for me. Ashley's BBQ is still my BBQ of choice in Milwaukee. I would not go back but I will try some other new place when the BBQ itch is back

Give it up guys, go back to fixing motorcycles. And I hope you fix motorcycles better than you fix BBQ. I gave this place three tries before giving up. Just not worth the trip or the money. Started one day with a pulled pork sandwich. It was pork but not pulled, more like chopped or something. Way too wet, no smoke flavor, sauce was not good. The wife stopped one day and got some more pulled pork in a tray with sides. No flavor, sides were tasteless, they need to go back to BBQ school. Bought a rack of ribs with beans & coleslaw. They looked really good, falling off the bone, YUCK, way too salty, no real flavor. Hint: go to Penzy's, get some Galena Street Rib Rub, rub them down & let 'em sit overnight before cooking. Beans had no taste, coleslaw was strictly commercial...tasted of cardboard. No concept of how to make a BBQ sauce. Every rib joint on the north side would blow them away. Nobody who knows BBQ would recommend this food. Save your money, go to Speed Queen or almost anyplace else.

My buddy and I stopped here while passing through Milwaukee today. I ordered the Chicken Breast over rice and a half-slab of the St. Louis. The chicken was excellent- good flavor and moist with tasty skin if you're into that kind of thing. The texture of the rice was excellent and it was cooked well. Good value too. As for the ribs- I usually dip my ribs in sauce and I found myself not using any sauce because the flavor of the ribs alone was so good. I live in Chicago and frequent the best bbq around there- Smoque, Smokedaddy and Honky Tonk. The ribs at Milwaukee Smoked are as good as I've had in Chicago or anywhere. I picked those ribs clean. Milwaukee's Smoked has straight up knocked it outta the park with the ribs and seems to have a pretty good thing going with the other menu items. If I could make a few suggestions, I would say offer the chicken/rice dish with a vegetable, maybe add a sweet sauce to line-up of sauces, and most of all, put some picnic tables somewhere, anywhere. This place needs some seating. I anticipate that the next time I visit this place there'll be a line out the door.

As as half-year Texan, I was happy to find a smoked meat carry-out on the south side of Milwaukee. Although they've been on Howard off 43 since April, I hadn't discovered it. I've tried only the pulled pork sandwich. The smoke flavor is not strong, but the side Carolina vinegar sauce is great. I'll try the St. Louis style ribs next, although they are expensive. If that's the going price for a full slab of St. Louis style ribs in Milwaukee ($19.99), that's shocking. My favorite BBQ in Austin is $8.54 for a half and $12.54 for a full slab of St. Louis style ribs. In Austin, the BBQ places are all over the city, and here there are few choices. Too many in Milwaukee simply bake the ribs in the oven or in a roaster, so the meat is not smoked at all. The flavor may be tasty, and cater to the "falling of the bone mentality up here," which is what moisture does, but from a Southerner's or Southwesterner's point of view, that's just not BBQ. That's grandma's comfort food. It will be interesting to see if more competition up here will help lower the prices.
