Definitely do not go here. The main server acts as if you are bothering her by being in the restaurant. Once they didn't give me sour cream with my order - no big deal, right? Everyone makes mistakes. I went back in (I had placed a to go order) and asked if I could have a side of it. She looked incredibly annoyed and told me I'd have to pay extra. That is the last time I'll ever go there. When they prove that they value nickel and diming patrons instead of good customer service, I will no longer support their business.

This is one of the more "authentic" mexican places by my office, so come cinco de mayo we decided to head this way and drive RIGHT past Habeneros. It is a super small interior - maybe ten tables. The kitchen is visible from your table, which is cool, but means it gets a little loud. The walls are adorned with all sorts of knick-knacks and chotchkes. They start you out with chips and two different salsas, as well as a small dish of warm refried beans. That's the kicker! The salsas are actually really good too - and they'll gladly refill the chips if you ask nicely. My real issues came from the quality here... We started with margaritas, and seriously had to plug our noses to choke them down. They tasted like windshield washer fluid and tequila. I am the first one to appreciate a good pour, but this was just plain terrible. Not a bad deal for $5 a pop, but not a good deal if you can't drink them. I got a combo lunch platter, which included a tamale, a tostada and a taco. The taco was good... but the tamale was just dry and flavorless. It's unfortunately very hard to find a good tamale around here. Service is good, food is pretty quick and they have a pretty nice patio out front too, I'd swing by for some nachos and a beer - but that's about as far as I'd go.

Very disappointed, this place did not live up to the reviews. The actual restaurant decor was very quaint and service was actually pretty good. Unfortunately, the food quality was terrible, very bland and almost school cafeteria like. I had the carne asada dinner, as it's my standard comparison for Mexican restaurants. It was probably the worst dish I have ever been served at any Mexican restaurant. The steak seemed like was boiled, which gave it a strange color and texture. The whole meal was under seasoned, which is strange for a Mexican restaurant. The refried beans was watery and soupy- very weird! It seemed like every came out of a can or frozen bag, microwaved for 2 minutes then served! I won't even comment about the guacamole, other than it must have came from a Walmart container. The food is awful here which is shame, because I really like the restaurant physically! If you are in the Milwaukee area avoid this place, there are dozens of better Mexican restaurants! TacoBell has better food!

First, you should know that they have a total of about 20 seats in the entire place. The parking out front is a good indication of how much room is on the inside. Second, you should know that this is a fairly traditional Mexican location. So if you're looking for Queso dip for your chips, you'll be disappointed. Overall, the food was okay. It was hot and salsa was fresh, but I don't think that we'll be pulling off the road here unless we happen to be stopping in the area.

Great service, great food and an overall good time. I love the diverse menu and out door seating in the summer is super fun.

We've been there twice and would have gone more often if the weather had been better lately. The bulk of the menu is fairly standard Mexican restaurant fare, but it is well done and not at all expensive. We've had good service in our times there.

Saw a few previous reviews and figured I'd give it a shot. The shrimp tacos were really tasty! Definitely on the more intimate side as there is no blaring music or mariachi band strolling around. The waitstaff were friendly so we felt welcomed. Lastly, price...2 adults and 2 kids out right at $30! So cheap AND tasty eats!

Visiting the area on business and thought I'd try it based on reviews. Upon arrival no one recognized my presence so I went into the bar/kitchen and asked the man with his back to all that was happening whether I should seat myself. He directed me to a table and brought chips with a 4 oz ramekin of hot beans and another of pico. No salsa. No salt on the chips After the waitress asked for my drink order she spun around to leave before I stopped her to say that I was ready to order. She took my order begrudgingly then left. She then dropped off my drink and quickly left again. The food did arrive quickly enough but again she spun around and I had to stop her to ask for a Dos Equis and water to have with my meal. The corn torts for the carne asada tacos were straight out of the package and never saw the griddle nor oil to warm and soften. The meat had no flavor and the usual queso fresco was absent. Also absent was any kind of hot sauce to add in order to choke down the cardboard taste and texture of these "tacos." My beer and water then arrived with a clunk and - -you guessed it -- a quick about face before she disappeared again. She never asked if everything was ok nor if I needed anything. I was starving so I did finish my plate, but I couldn't wait to leave. Perhaps she sensed that because after a wait of about 10 minutes she appeared with the check and promptly ran in the other direction until I stopped her yet again to show her that she had placed the book ON TOP of my credit card which was on the table indicating I was ready to pay. I have to say that I have been in the service industry my entire life and this is one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. Her service was more than bad - she simply didn't care. You're in the wrong business, Honey.

It was one of those times where you're running around doing mundane weekend errands in the suburbs and you look to Yelp like a genie for cheap margaritas. Everyone can relate to that, I'm sure. We "discovered" this place in the way famous explorers discovered stuff that native people already knew was there, but since we're white, city folks, we can take all the credit. The food was pretty satisfying and very very reasonably priced. The service was attentive and friendly and the dining room is the size of my living room which made for a pretty intimate experience. There was a lot of random stuff on the walls, which made for a fun game of Eclectic-Mexican-Stuff-Eye-Spy while we waited. (Find the picture of the couple standing in a field while a fighter jet zooms by in the background - 10 points!) It's kind of far away to make this a place I would eat at very frequently, but I did enjoy it and would return in the future if I am nearby.

Quaint little place with decent food. My wife loved her Coconut Shrimp and I liked my Al Pastor tacos. The service was very friendly and very prompt. We live in the area and will definitely go back. AND, there is a little speakeasy in the basement...what's not to love about that.

Amazing margaritas, excellent chips and salsas. Food is fantastic. Small place, but great value and authentic food.

Passed up the big chain down the road to go here and I'm glad I did. One of the best rellenos I've ever had. Small vintage place that cares about what they're serving. Waitress was nice, great imported beer selection and the price was awesome.

A little weary at first to try it but you truly never know until you do...and we were pleasantly surprised the food was good! I had the Three Amigo Fajitas, mucho excellente. The dishes came with small amounts of sour cream so I guess they get you to add extra cream, whatever. The bean was a nice extra dip to add with your chips and salsa. The wait staff though could have been better and the ambience more inviting. It literally is a converted home, turned into a restaurant so the tables seemed crammed into what would be the living room area. And the basement is converted into a sports bar with a big TV screen. Two thumbs up for their lemonade though. Sounds trivial but they put real lemons in it which gives it a real lemonade taste...also had a root beer, which was also good. It didn't taste like Sprecher...wish I asked the name because I wouldn't mind have one again. But, will definitely go back for the fajitas in the future.

My wife and I stopped in here for lunch on happens chance. I am going to say it was the best Mexican food I have had in Milwaukee. Its not a large place and it took a little long to get out food but boy was it worth it. Everything was fresh and the steak in my burrito was very tender, not chewy like a lot of places. I have been back several times since and it is always good.

I had lunch here with work colleagues on a Friday. The food was DELICIOUS. The decor was very interesting. Service was friendly and prompt. The bill was reasonably inexpensive. I'll be back.

This is my favorite Mexican place to eat in the North Shore. Seating is a little hard to find due to their total of about 10 tables, but this time we walked in without a reservation and got seated immediately. Los Paisa is my mother's favorite place because of its strong margaritas, and I love it because of its crab enchiladas. I feel very comfortable eating here because of its homey atmosphere, and I will continue to go there when I crave Mexican. The chips and dip they bring to your table are delicious, my favorite dip being the bean dip. The service is friendly. My family loves this place so much that we took our Christmas photo here last year!

I work close to Los Paisa but just visited for the first time recently. The place is small and "vintage" looking. The walls are covered with lots of frame photos, I think some are classic entertainers and some may be family photos. The tables, booths and chairs look a bit worn with torn vinyl on some of the seats. So, it certainly has that divey look I like in an ethnic restaurant. I ordered one of the lunch specials, #4 I believe. A tamal, burrito, enchilada, rice and beans for $6.85. You choose the protein (ground beef, chicken, shredded beef, or pork) or upgarde to shrimp or steak for $1.00. I went with chicken. The rice and beans passed my isolated taste tests and the pulled/shredded chicken had a good flavor, but might have been a tad dry. The masa surrounding the tamal was too thick so there wasn't much balance between the chicken and masa taste, althought the bottom of the tamal had a thinner layer, so maybe flip it over and eat from the top. The enchilada and burrito were both covered in sauce. I'm not used to a burrito covered in sauce. Neither had other fillings that I could tell other than the chicken. The enchilada sauce was a darker, almost mole style, while the sauce on the burrito was similar to the style of enchilada sauce my mother uses out of a can. The burrito also had more cheese on it than the enchilada. Since burritos are made with flour tortillas and enchiladas with corn tortillas, I was able to tell them apart. The service was prompt and the staff is friendly and welcoming. While I think there are better options for Mexican food in the north shore area, Los Paisa will do fine for a quick and inexpensive lunch.

Stopped by Los Paisa on a whim, and was incredibly satisfied by the experience. The restaurant is colorfully decorated with Mexican folk art and old family photos. We were brought free chips, salsa, and bean dip when we arrived, and everything that we ordered was reasonably priced and delicious. I had the #4 lunch combo, and was able to bring home leftovers. This is a really good place for casual, no-frills Mexican food.

Great food every time. Go at least once a month. Puts the "Mexican" restaurant just down the road to shame

This is the real deal, fresh homemade Mexican in the North-shore. The pico de gallo was super fresh, tres amigo fajitas were sizzling, and the carnitas we very tasty too. It's small and friendly and very good prices too.

Greatest little joint in town. Amazing mole, enchiladas, and margaritas. Super in expensive, perfect value . Manolo is the coolest guy, he's the owner. He talked to me and my girlfriend at dinner and bought us both drinks ON TWO OCCASIONS. Favorite place in the area. Very authentic. Margaritas are sooo good, authentic and cheap

They give you delicious 3 dips and chips to start. The bean is my fave! I always get the shrimp tacos which are always delish. I have it with pineapple sometimes which is so so so good. My boo always gets the mole. I haven't had the chance to try it yet because my boyfriend devours it before I even look up from my tacos de camarones. I think that means he loves it. The margaritas are strong and worth it. Get the Manolos. The owner is super friendly and so are the waiters. The owner is from Guanajuato and having studied abroad there, this restaurant would fit right in if it was there instead. The decor and space is cozy, bright, vintage and cute. Love the family pics and the Mexican art. No complaints from this fat kid.

Great food and inexpensive. Server was very friendly and it felt like he was welcoming us to his home for dinner. The place is quaint. It's in converted house and the decor inside is cute with photos of the family.

I love this place! I've been eating at El Paisa (now Los Paisas) for a few years and the food is always great. I get the Flautas regularly, but I also order the Mole and Fajitas sometimes. And I'm never disappointed. And the Taquitos on the appetizer menu are great, even as an entree. The only reason I'm giving El Paisa 4/5 stars is due to the sometimes forgetful service. Getting drink refills can be difficult at times. But they are always super friendly otherwise.

  • Karla N.

Very disappointing especially based on the star average and reviews. Everything bland, even the 'house made hot sauce' was bland. First server really did not seem to care we were there. The second server nice, but seemed new. His recommendations we probably the blandest on the menu. I do not need to return. Plus there was an odd smell when we walked in.

Went for dinner with the kids on a Tuesday after hearing good things from my In-Laws... and was really impressed! Great little spot, looks like all the food was great, they were friendly, a little understaffed but the owner was on the floor helping. I had the Ranchero Steak, it was very good, Kids enjoyed it and the wife who modifies everything in a Mexican place (doesn't do Sour Cream, Beans, Onions, Jalapenos or super spicy) was thrilled that her order was perfect. Great find, gotta staff up a little for busy nights and get yer hands a little dirtier but over all a great experience.

I have to disagree with almost everything the first reviewer said. I've never had a bad experience there. The food is pretty standard, but there are some dishes that are anything but "unremarkable." First, their quesadillas are spectacular. Also, the coconut shrimp appetizer is phenomenal and unlike any dish I've ever had. The place is nice and small, so the servers generally pay good attention to your table's needs. The outside seating in the summer area is also very nice. Never really had their margaritas, but they carry typical mexican beers as well as a rarer one (Bohemia) which I always order. I would try it out. ps, Coa is a chain restaurant and they charge $8 for "authentic street tacos." Go to a real Mexican restaurant instead!

  • Steve G.

I've been here a couple times. The last visit was a flat-out zero star visit, but I'll bump the overall to 1 because the food is cheap and serviceable. The food is not bad, but certainly unremarkable. I'd much sooner go a couple miles west to Habanero's, or to Coa at Bayshore Town Center for more variety and more authenticity of Mexican faire. The service is spotty too -- the last time, they weren't friendly at all, particularly at the bar area. One of the few restaurants on my "Will not go again" list.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
