Having moved to Milwaukee less than a year ago, I haven't been out on water street or the surrounding area very much, but after going to Harp I feel like I have a good idea of what exactly it entails. I went with some friends shortly after the Badgers had just beaten Kentucky. Everyone was obviously in a very good mood and lots of fun was being had. The place was packed with college aged sports fans, also known as bros, and the wait for drinks was quite long. Luckily for me my friends knew one of the bartenders and we were able to bypass the lines and the ridiculously high prices. If this had not been the case, I probably would have left much earlier. Overall I had an okay time at Harp.

I always feel like a jerk doling out the "meh." Meh almost seems worse than "eek" in a way, you know? You feel me, Yelp nation? Meh is so... disaffected. But two stars seems just about right for the Harp. Yes, they do have a killer patio right on the river, this is true. And for me, this is right about where the redeeming qualities end. If you're into sports, this is a solid place to watch a thing... if you don't mind being surrounded by tons of people that may be younger/act younger than you. *cough getting old and stodgy cough* I shouldn't be like that, so I'll rephrase: Yes, this is a college bar. It's a college-y type bar just off Water St. So while it feels sort of like Water Street, it also feels a little, oh... I don't know... better? Better-ish? It does. It's better, I think. The patio rules. Requisite domestics and imports on tap/in bottles. They have food, but I've never partaken. Go and see for yourself, if you're into the college-y/sportsy/Water St.-esque type vibe. As a one-off, it's honestly not terrible. You just have to be in the right frame of mind.

Five stars for the most perfectly poured "Black and Tan" that I have ever had in my life. Really. Check the picture. And a fantastic deck with a great sunset view.

Descriptive phrase: loud, crowded college bar. Water Street isn't my scene, so the few times I've been to Harp Irish Pub I've been dragged there by friends. Let's break it down: On its own corner and bounded by the river, Harp's in a neat spot. During the summer they have a fantastic outdoor porch on the water, and during the winter this is closed in and heated. There's 4 bars spread throughout the joint, which allows for relatively easy access to continued libations. The space itself isn't anything special, but also isn't too grungy to turn you off. The inside area is very dark, but the porch is well-lit. Drinks aren't outrageously-priced. My main issue with Harp, and most of Water for that matter, is how ridiculously-packed it gets every weekend. The patio usually has a tiny bit of space, but if you're inside you literally won't be able to move. Then there's the music; it's so ungodly-loud, which would be okay if you could dance but there's nowhere near enough space to even wiggle. The clinetele is all college-aged (or close to it). On the one hand this means they're not as pretentious as people on Cathedral Square; on the other hand it means they get way drunker and rowdier. Harp is usually a tad tamer than other Water Street haunts, but still crazy compared to most parts of Milwaukee. I'm giving Harp a 3 because it's a good spot if you're into their scene, but that's just not my style.

Classic spot on the river with a great staff. Been a favorite for many many years. Solid bar food, excellent draft selections, and again the people. It's all about the great management and staff that makes this place so special.

Walked in at 5pm on a Friday. They were not very busy so we sat on the deck. It took a while for a server to come to the table. She gave us the happy hour specials and we ordered our drinks. 10 minutes later our drinks arrived and that was the last we ever saw our server. We wanted to order food and more beers but we sat for 20 minutes with empty glasses and no menus. I ended going up to the three servers sitting behind an empty bar and asking for our check. 10 minutes later a different server came to the table and asked what we had so he can write up our bill. We were there for over 45 minutes and just got one round of drinks. Pathetic. Only good thing was $2 beers during happy hour.

If you like waiting 30 minutes in a line to go into a bar that smells like puke then go here. Don't know why this place is always busy. The deck in the summer is the only good thing about this place

Don't let the outside fool you, it isn't as small as it looks, this place has great outside seating on the river. Drinks are reasonable, mostly college age crowd but we had a great time. Parking is hard to find

Whenever I'm in town, Harp is one of my regular stops. Great staff, fantastic drinks, and a nice porch to sit on and get some sun. The food is a little hit or miss, but generally good. It's a must.

The food and atmosphere are amazing, it is quite unfortunate the service level doesn't match. Even when there are very few people in the bar, don't expect attentive service, everything here is slow.

Seems like this has been a problem for Harp as of late. I also had an issue with their bouncer last night. I have never been to Harp, as I do not usually care for Water Street...its a little too rowdy for me. However, I ended up in line at Harp around midnight. We had been waiting in line for more than 20 minutes, and were fairly close to the door. The ropes the Harp uses to manage the waiting line are easily tripped....you could lean on it and it would snap back. This seems to be what happened. Someone in line tripped the rope, not myself, I just happened to be on the outside of the line. This must've been reason enough for the bouncer (male, 5'5", red beard) to violently grab me by the shoulder and drag me out of line. I was so taken aback by what happened, that I couldn't even speak. Being grabbed with that much force led me to think that I was about to be assaulted! The bouncer then screamed in my face that I would not be let into the bar. Keep in mind that I was not some drunk girl falling on the ground, that needed to be removed from the line. I was patiently standing in line to go inside. The force by which I was removed from the line was very inappropriate. I am a small girl...barely over 5ft, I did not appreciate being manhandled...I was rubbing my shoulder for a good 30min after that. Needless to say, I left, without saying a word. I walked over to the corner and waited for my friends to leave the line. As someone who has worked in the service industry for quite sometime, I know that dealing with drunken 20something's is quite annoying. But, the way the bouncer grabbed me was unnecessary...especially since I was not being disruptive in any way possible. I do not plan on returning to Harp. It is never okay for a grown man to use force like that on a woman. It was just so inappropriate, on so many levels. I hope for Harp's sake that the bouncer was from a temp agency, because this reflects so poorly on the business.

What? Wow! First time here. Impressions - College bar. Guys playing music on nice riverside back patio...felt like they never wanted to leave the good old HS days of practicing tunes in the basement, even though they are now pushing 50. Loud and all about the buckets of Corona. Stepped inside - mind you it was 5:30 on a Sunday- one drunk woman sitting on the floor next to the bar. One very hairy big guy laying on the bar so his GF could do a shot off his jiggly belly (see photo and assistance in steadying the shot glass by bartender). Regretfully, this started a trend of drunk -way past their frat days 30 something- guys laying on the bar shirt up for GFs to take shot. Oye. Very telling was the very bewildered group of older touristy looking folks standing out front, who thought they were going to pop into a quaint irish pub but instead found a mix of porkies, david lynch and dr seuss. There is plenty of beer in this town, no point in going there again.

Exactly what the doctor ordered. After fighting to find a table or even standing room at any of the german pubs across the river, we wandered over to Harp and were pleasantly surprised with the beautiful deck seating right on the river, affordable brews, and chill crowd. Service wasn't amazing, but whatever. We got our beers while sitting on the river during sunset. I'm really not complaining.

Absolutely awful service....I'm not sure if our waitress noticed we existed. Took me asking for service twice in order to actually get someone to ask for our order.

If I could give it negative stars, I would. Went in here to get a drink and maybe some bar food. One of the waitresses shorts were so short that her butt cheek was hanging out. Now, I am no prude but this was just yucky. We went out to the patio and had a seat. We would have stayed outside, but I didn't want to share my table with the bird poop that hadn't been cleaned up in I don't know how long. We went inside, and the alternative was sharing my table with a dirty band-aid and a hat that I imagine was from the night before. We actually stayed (not sure why) and each ordered a Guinness. When they finally came to the table, my glass had thick pink lipstick stuck to the rim of the glass. I have no idea how they didn't see it when they were pouring it, because I saw it before it reached the table. That was it. We walked out and will not return.

What can I say, I love this place. The patio in the summer is amazing, add live music on Sundays and if it were possible I would never leave. It all depends on what you're looking for, but if you're looking to get hammered drunk and play some bar dice with your friends you're at the right spot. This place is packed on Saturday and Sunday, with everyone drunk and having a good time. If you want something low key, don't come here on a weekend night or Sunday after around 3. The bartenders here are the shit, strong drinks and all super friendly. Bottom line is if you're looking for a rowdy place to get fucked up with your friends...look no further.

No way. Just left the Harp. Should have been sitting there on this beautiful day for at least a few more hours... First of all, the service was HORRIBLE. Absolutely ridiculously horrible. We had a table of 12 at 4:00 on Friday afternoon and NOBODY was there. We were out on the deck and all we wanted was drinks, drinks and more drinks. I guess that was a huge problem for our server who had a the personality of a dish rag. I ended up going to the inside bar to get a drink. $8.00 during happy hour. wow. Was never told that there were specials... or that there were happy hour prices. When I flagged down our oh-so-happy server to get another round, she charged me $9.00 for the exact same drink! Guess it was that extra effort she put in to walk over to the bar. Seriously. We would have spent a shit ton more money than we did (our bill was almost $80.00 for the short amount of time we were there)... but she was such a buzz kill that we needed to move on to another bar. Also- Some DOUCHE BAG server came over and picked up an empty PBR can off our table. It was from someone's canoe and we were looking for a garbage can. He threw a FIT! He actually walked up to our table of ADULTS and said "Does anyone else have a PBR can, so I can kick you all out of here?"!! Wow. Nice attitude guy. What the hell was that all about? We then asked to close out our tab and paid the bill and left. We had just ordered a pitcher and we just left it sitting on the table. I know I will NOT be going back to the Harp any time soon. The servers are total a$$holes and have no idea what customer service is all about. The drink prices are ridiculous and are random prices depending on which angry, customer hating server you order from. Never again. No thanks.

We came here for after dinner drinks on a recommendation from our waitress at dinner. We snagged an open booth and the waitress came over to ask us if we wanted to order from her or directly from the bar. I thought that was odd ... after asking her to repeat herself to ensure we heard her correctly, we assured her we would order with her. Service was quick although she did keep trying to suggest vodka drinks that sounded gross to me. Music was decent. Booth was a bit uncomfortable and the table's wood was chipping - charm? Bathroom was very small and cramped, and the stall door did not lock which resulted in a lot of inebriated people opening the door on me. I bet this place is good for the summertime when the patio on the river is open.

One of my friends wanted to g to Harp. I had been there a few time, nothing special. What happened next pissed me off beyond belief. I go to enter the front door, no doorman outside. I figure he is inside. I walk up to the door and feel someone grab my shoulder. They guy says something like "where the hell do you think you are going?". I say "into the bar?" Obviously confused as to what he wants. Turns out he is the doorman, he asks to see my ID, I alread have it out, he looks at it, then says "you can't go in". I said something like "what he hell man, why not!?". He tells me that I tried to go in without being ID'd and he just doesn't wan t let me in. Now, I saw him when I was walking up. He was 20 ft away chatting up some girl, but how was I supposed to know who he was. I figure it is 1:30 I can just go across the street to Trinity. As it turns out they are connected and the dumbass Harp bouncer told them to not let me in either. Instead of arguing I stood silently outside their door, arms crossed. It pissed them off so bad that one guy came out and shoved me back into the street. Also, while I was standing there they weren't IDing anyone entering. A girl going in laughed at me and said "haha I'm not even 21 yet" then stuck her tounge at me. The cops saw me getting shoved and hand cuffed me, put me up against the fence. I told them what happened, they let me go. Although, the bouncers made up this elaborite story about I was being baligerantly drunk. Lucky for me the breathalizer didn't agree, as I had only a couple drinks. I still go to Trinity or Harp when my friends want to go. Overall they are pretty ok places to drink, the food isn't terrible either. I just don't like their choice of employees. Time to get a drink at the bar, sometimes slow, but normally average.

We came here for some drinks on the river after a Brewers game (no food this time around!). The drinks were fairly priced (definitely cheaper than Chicago, no surprise). The patio outside is definitely the best part. It's right on the river with plenty of seating, and a bar right outside so you don't even have to go in. It's definitely more of a chill place (no like a club with lots of dancing). I was pleased!

Just don't. This used to be one of our favorite places to go out for the night, however their staff has been extremely rude on several occasions, to the point where we won't be going back. Milwaukee has plenty of bars and nightlife to offer, don't waste your time by going here.

This a fun place to go for a drink. It's on the water, which is fantastic. Drink prices/specials aren't awesome. It does get super packed on weekends though...like so much so that you can't move.

Did a Great boat ride down the Milwaukee river, docked here...loved it. Felt like I was in key west, we all had shrimp and the mozzarella stix and both were excellent..

We stopped in this morning for a little breakfast and beer. The hostess was nice and the waitress was very attentive. The patio area is awesome! I wish we lived closer so we could visit it more often. The food was good and the beer was... Irish! I had a Bloody Mary with some epic garnish. All around, a nice little bar with a good view, food, and service. We left very satisfied.

Haven't been to The Harp in years and found myself here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon whiling the time away on their outdoor deck. One of the great things about Milwaukee is nothing ever seems to change. The Harp is just the same as it was when I last visited about 15 years ago! Overlooking the Milwaukee River- this back deck is the epitome of casual- rough hewn wood benches and tables. Service is friendly and the breeze coming off the river helps keep you cool as the sun beats down. The beer is cheap and they even have added an iced drink machine that puts out some some pretty potent margaritas that go down way too easily! The little free parking lot on the side is still there- and there are also boat slips that you can pull your boat up to off the back deck. I'd think twice about going in the Winter as the smoke in this place makes my eyes water- but in the Summer- it's location can't be beat! The area around the Harp has so many new bars since I lived here that you might be tempted to stray. But don't. The Harp will still take care of you like an old college pal- nothing fancy- but if you were looking for fancy you'd go elsewhere anyway!

We were here on a crazy Sunday night and managed to score a couple of seats at the bar. The bartenders were attentive, so we were well stocked. They probably don't get a lot of wine drinkers so the wine selection was unimpressive, but they have several draft beers and lots of bottles. We decided to try the chicken strips after hearing that they were breaded in house, and enjoyed both the buffalo and bbq style.

About the only thing Irish about this place is the name. Serving Guinness doesn't make you an Irish pub. And blasting Black Eyed Peas and Nickelback DEFINITELY doesn't make you an Irish pub. Full of Water St. rejects. they have a fireplace.

The Harp... The place has always been a special type of shithole... until now. I returned to my homeland to find that The Harp had become just as bland as the rest of the new bars in the Water Street area. A plus was the lack of vomit that used to hang pungently in the air. Regardless, the place is completely different. The place I worked (aka blacked out on Tuesdays) during college the details lost make me sad. New Harp -1

Stopped in on a lazy Sunday afternoon. We sat outside overlooking the Milwaukee river! Ahhh super awesome! I ordered the $5.00 bloody mary special!! All I need to say is bacon! I got all the fixing plus bacon, I'm hooked! The rest of my party was happy too. Bacon!

You would think that a bar just off of Water Street with a back deck overlooking the river would be an automatic homerun, but sadly, this location is not guaranteed success. Yes, the Harp's back deck does have some of the most relaxing views of the Milwaukee River, but that does not offset the rickety furniture and bug infestation. I have been there three times this summer and each time I had bug issues. The first time took me by surprise. The second time I was a little annoyed that the issue wasn't resolved. The third time I was irritated, but planned ahead and brought some Off! Smooth & Dry insect repellant with me. As for the beverages, it's a bar. Nothing to write home about. Good prices, but not amazing. The other physical aspect that I cannot stand about The Harp is the men's restroom. They don't have paper towels to dry your hands... or even a blow dryer... they have the disgusting cloth towel that repeatedly rotates in a circle... GROSS!

In spite of it's Irishness, the Harp is an all-American establishment. This is a great bar in a city full of good bars. I make sure to stop in anytime I'm in Milwaukee. In recent years the neighborhood around Harp has become inundated with pubs. The Harp is still the authentic and has the best patio in town. No top 40 music or dance floor necessary. I'm so happy Harp hasn't given into Milwaukee pub trends. Coming from San Francisco, I am always shocked at how cheap beer pitchers are in other cities. Harp is no exception, with a great selection on tap and your standard bar food menu (just wish they'd keep the kitchen open later!).

  • Becky S.

1 star for the wayyy to loud crappy music. 1 star for the difficulty getting to the bar. 3.5 stars for the view and seating outside. 2 stars for the crowd, kinda young, kinda douchey. 3 stars for the bartenders, when you actually get to them they're pretty attentive. Ehh not the best choice for our only night out in Milwuakee but Trinity seemed way worse.

  • Maeve M.

Horrible experience at the Harp. We waited 45 minutes for our food and had to catch a play so we ended up boxing it up and not eating. Then, when I asked for them to comp the bill, they refused! I called the owner and he told me that "next time you stop in ask for me and I'll take care of you." Ah.....no thanks. Too many other great restaurants in Milwaukee to dine with out the attitude. I think they forgot how to treat their customers so they want to come back. See ya Harp!

I like this place on an early Friday night when i'm out with the guys for some casual drinks. That is why this gets a 4 star rating and not a 5 star rating. This bar is directly across the street from the Trinity Three Irish Pubs and it becomes just as packed as Trinity but in a place a fourth of the size. Harp has an amazing location being right on the river where you can hide out back away from your non-smoking buddies and look at the beautiful river. The also have heating lamps back there for the winter! EXCELLENT. So, as I was saying that this place can become obnoxiously packed with people, they do have good drink prices when the night gets going but definitely a great place to go for casual drinks. They also have cool old-style booths on the lower landing of Harp which is really nice and, having been to Ireland, thought it was like being in a little pub. (with the addition of loud American music and angry drunk people haha) Collectively; Harp is a great place to go.

  • Jake N.

The only reason this place doesn't get 1 star is the patio area. It's nice. Other than that, there is zero things special about this place. It's not the fakest Irish bar in Milwaukee, not even close you need to go to Trinity for that, but there's not much to bring me back here. Beer is decently priced and fine, the food is not so good.

Going to the Harp is a Milwaukee tradition for me. I don't purposely go, but for some reason I always end up there. They have a great little patio right on the river. Service has always been good, however I think the bartender was hammered when we were there last weekend. I don't recall ever eating there, but that's not to say that I haven't. The Harp just has a good laid back vibe for me....lotsa memories there.

I love road tripping to Milwaukee and the Harp is one of my favorite places to go. They have an awesome patio right on the Milwaukee river that is a great place to hang out and drink in the summertime.
