Ah, Milwaukee! You have me confused, I thought you knew food with all these pretty restaurants everywhere! This place has a nice feel, it's great to see it has been around for over 10 years. But there is NOTHING French except for some trite and cliche menu items. And I wish the owner would have a French speaker verify his menu and collateral before posting it, there are so many mistakes and "anglicismes" that it is a distraction. In most other cities diners would intuitively know this without speaking French, but Milwaukee . . . hmmm. Don't get it. The food is not French although the pork chop "Cotes du Porc" was not bad. However it should be "Cote de Porc" because "Cotes du" is plural and you only get one chop and "du" implies a specific swine but I am sure no one is particularly familiar with which specific pig we are eating, so the non-specific "de" should be used. What does it matter if the food is good? It does, the point of a restaurant is the total experience and this place comes off goofy, and, well, unsophisticated. I am sure Marquette has some French majors. The wine list is okay, some interesting wines on there. I did not find the staff condescending or pretentious at all as others appear to have indicated. The bartender was very professional, attentive, and friendly. He may have thought I was a critic though. If I wanted to really test this place I should have had the Coq au Vin, but I did not want to waste a meal on what has become a cliche French dish, that most French will say is not all that good anyway, and is all too often very poorly executed by "French" restaurants because they think that for legitimacy they have to have this item on the menu. The desserts are all boring, did not try any, but there is nothing French about that list. Creme brulee has also become so trite that I think it should be pulled from the menu just to lend more authenticity to the concept. Also, a creme caramel should not be corrupted with whatever ingredient I have now blocked out of my mind that they put in there. Profiteroles, again cliche, no French person really eats those, they are not good and taste like sugared papier mache with nasty cream inside (I am sure these are no different, chocolate is drizzled on these just to make them edible). Nice selection of French cordials and liqueurs though.

Great food, fun location, great menu, friendly and knowledgeable staff. I took my wife and daughter for my wife's birthday, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Every course was delicious. Our waitress was very helpful, and allowed us to customize some things for our eleven-year-old daughter, who cleaned her plates and had a great time too. I understand that it is under new management, but it is just as great as I remember it. We will try to get back sooner than later.

I experienced one the best meals ever at Coquette with many glasses of wine with co-workers. We ordered about six or seven desserts and just kept passing the delicious and decadent plates of sweets around the table. Heavenly!

Went here the other night for downtown dining week. Started off with the watermelon gazpacho and the "field greens". The watermelon gazpacho was decent, but the field green appetizer was seriously just a big bowl filled up with lettuce (NOTHING else... no spinach, no veggies) tossed in a vinaigrette. The vinaigrette was good but I was honestly surprised they would put out just a large bowl of lettuce and dare to call that an appetizer. Anyway, on to the main courses - We had the Coq Au Vin and the Bacon Wrapped Strauss Veal Meatloaf. The Coq Au Vin was great: huge portion, extremely tender and juicy chicken, wonderful red wine sauce. The meatloaf was very good, albeit a little less than the Coq Au Vin. I noticed the meatloaf on the entree menu for $18 or so, and I would probably be disappointed if I paid $18 for that meatloaf. For dessert we had the Oeufs A La Neige and the Chocolate Mouse. The Oeufs were very light and very good. The Mouse was much more like a chocolate pudding than a mouse, but had good flavor nontheless. Service was good, not great. All around this is good food in a welcoming atmosphere with decent service. I probably won't be back, and only because there are so many other restaurants in this city that I would rate as 5-stars that are in Coquette's price range and similar in atmosphere.

Went here after graduating med school, so was hoping for a nice dinner...French food is great because it is so classic and simple, yet so delicious....Well, this food was definitely simple, simply bland. They can't handle seafood, the waitresses are nasty (how dare I remind you to get me the cream for my coffee or butter that I asked you for twice already? I am SO sorry!). I guess this is a good place to eat if you are thinking about dining at Sanford Resaturant, because it is owned by the same people. After eating here, you will be certain to cancel your reservation at Sanford. Go take all that scratch you just saved yourself and eat something *yummy*. I do like the fact that it's across the street from Arthur Murray's dance studio, so you can watch people doing couples disco and get flashed in the face by the revolving mirroball. It's kinda funny....

Last August, I wanted to eat here for my birthday and could not because I forgot to make a reservation and they were booked. Now I know why!! The food was delicious, I loved the rustic atmosphere, my pear martini was fabulous and well the desserts were so good, I would come back just for them alone. I ordered the shark special and my husband ordered the veal meatloaf; when it came out the meatloaf was too salty so we switched meals (I'm a salt-a-holic; my husband doesn't touch it.) I tasted both meals and each were equally good, but I was happy for the switch because the meatloaf was the best I've ever tasted. It had a very unique sauce that I really enjoyed. My husband enjoyed the shark as well and said he was also glad we traded. For dessert I ordered this cake that was similar to Tiramisu but oh so much better and my hubby got the Creme Brulee...needless to say, we cannot wait to come back.

A lot of people have been mentioning the food was bland, and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't French food sort of known for being bland, or at least not particularly flavorful? I thought the food was delicious and the ambiance perfect. The service, as well, was absolutely impeccable. The appearance is not fancy (more French bistro-ish), so no need to "dress up", but don't roll in in a hooded sweatshirt and sneakers. I had the french onion soup which was really really good and the chicken sandwich with provolone, also very good. Pretty lame choices but I wasn't feeling very adventurous. My friend had the skate which was the special for the night and it was cooked perfectly. They had a nice wine selection, too. Prices are average for an upscale restaurant, with the main entrees ranging from around $17 - $30. Not too bad considering the quality of the food. I can't think of anything to critique, everything went perfectly smoothly from start to finish. I will definitely be back!

good food, but bad service. the menu felt too basic and not french enough.

This is one of my favorite comfort food spots, with a comfortable cozy atmosphere. It just feels a lot like one's favorite restaurant around the corner from home (if home was in Paris). The prices are very reasonable. If I want a hammer steak and frites, this is the spot. The Coq au Vin is also outstanding and has been consistently great for many years.

A little disappointing. Good food but I expected great. I've eaten in a bunch of restaurants in France and CC reminded me of none of them. The pot pies lack imagination and the pizza is only suitable as an appetizer - flatbread is a misnomer; cracker crust describes it better. The service was lackluster as well. Our waitress was aloof and registered as insincere. The prices do fit the quality though so I can't complain too much.

  • Jeremy K.

While everything I ordered (Manhattan, charcuterie, hanger steak) was pretty tasty, I was slightly disappointed with the frites. A little too "matchstick" considering the French bistro feel of everything else. All and in all, an enjoyable meal. Extra points for the fantastic fresh baguettes.

Was in Milwaukee visiting from Chicago and happened to have lunch at Coquette. Delightfully surprised. We ended up going a little after the normal lunch hour so there weren't too many people in the restaurant. Had the greens salad with pear and goat cheese and the croque monsieur sandwich. Both were outstanding with the cm being every bit as good as the ones I've had in France. Service was friendly and attentive. Decor was nice. Food rocked and the iced tea was great. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for french food in a cozy/upscale restaurant. Cheese plate was also fun/attractive/delicous.

It has been about a year since i was last at Coquette but i can still remember it perfectly. I was there for lunch and i ate so much that when i left i just wanted to unbutton my pants because i couldnt stop eating. If I remember correctly i got a roasted chicken which turned out to be a whole half chicken in a red wine reduction on a bed of creamy garlic mashed potatoes. A relatively simple dish that many people could cook at home but i doubt it would have been able to prepare it half as well. Unfortunately it was a pretty penny for a college student to pay, but given the chance i would pay it again.

hello Nick the bartender! bacon wrapped veal "meatloaf". house made banana ginger ice cream cookie. a half decent quiche, not a bad french onion soup. my 3 course dinner prix-fixe: $30, even with a substitution. all the breads are baked in house and sold in the adjoining, yet separately named, bakery. considering the dining options in Milwaukee (ugh.. Solly's? Mader's? c'mon), this is one of the finer restaurants available in town. to avoid the lunch "rush", sit at the bar and have a "Rendezvous" beer, a brew specific to Coquette. finally, i noticed they have seasonal cooking classes and milwaukeeans(?) apparently don't like to cook shellfish. bygones.

We have been to Coquette twice in the past year. The food is good, and the menu seemed to change quite a bit in the four months between our visits. I was somewhat surprised to read that others have had complaints with service - both of our experiences were quite good. The servers were reasonably attentive, and not snooty at all about explaining some of the french dishes that I wasn't sure about. While all the food was pretty good - i had the duck confit en croute appetizer last time we were in - it was absolutely fantastic - one of hte tastiest, most comforting things I've had in quite a while. While the food is great - Coquette is reasonably pricey. I think Coquette is probably a little bit overpriced - but again we went back a few months after our first visit - so we were obviously quite satisfied.

Recently ate at Coquette Cafe and the food was excellent. Loved the whole experience. Window table where we could watch the Fred Astaire Dancers across the street. Our waiter Jake, was friendly and helpful. We have a great time talking with him and enjoyed dessert so much. Fun place and will be back soon.

I wasn't crazy about this place. I had some high hopes going in, but it was just alright. The mussels were plentiful and the curry was a nice touch that wasn't too overpowering. The mussels were the only thing actually memorable about our meal. The coq au vin was fine but given the look and feel of the restaurant, I expected a bit more. I will say that the desserts looked pretty good and had we more time, I would have liked to give them a try.

One word: YUM. I ordered the Coq au Vin, it was perfection. My three other dining companions were also quite satisfied with their meals (and we all did the whole "ooo what did you order again? That looks really good" to each other). The bill was also just right (not saying cheap, I'm saying it was appropriate). French food is usually expensive anyway. But this was definitely bang for the buck. I also got a kick out of the fact that they had mouth wash and little cups in the bathroom. And lotion. I guess they prepare for those on dates! haha

For years i've often slowly pondered into the real of Third Ward cuisine only to find that most of it is overpriced and genuinely mediocre. Coquette surpasses all negative critique and allows for a wonderful french inspired environment. The first time I ate at Coquette, it was simply upon a whim of wanting to have a good time with a friend. Little did it would become a monthly routine of mine. The waitresses are charming and not to mention good looking, and the atmosphere is overwhelmingly recondite with paintings at every wall. pros: - baguettes are to die for. -pan bagnat is super delicious (focaccia bread has right amount of seasoning). -soupe l'oignon (i usually ask without cheese, has become a staple in what i order everytime i go). -coq au vin - the consistency of the chicken was a little off, but anything with mushrooms on it is a+ in my book. (also a staple in regular orders). cons: -coleslaw is wayy to strong for my taste(alcohol territory people). -like all, frites look like fries, don't know where they're getting with this. -stay away from their pizza, that's what other places are for.

I love the atmosphere of this place - the service was good and the food was delicious. I had the Croque Madame and it was fantastic. The portion sizes were also generous, which I was happy to find.

The lunches here are delicious and reasonably priced. I have been here twice for lunch. The first time, I ordered the quiche of the day. Today, I ordered the steak hanger wrap. Both were great. Their other specials also looked delicious. The bread is also soft and yummy.

what happened to this place? coquette had regularly been a 'must eat at' place on my return trips to beautiful milwaukee, but my lunch this time was relatively uninspired and bland. -salad nicoise with tuna ordered rare to medium rare came out medium -slaw served with mom's croque monsieur was so heavily dilled and room temperature that it was barely edible -two salads and two sandwiches took 30 minutes to come out of the kitchen as the 4 of us sat as the only customers...whaa...??? -the yolumba viognier was good, though def getting knocked to the bottom of the 'return to' list

I went here with a few friends after complaining that Milwaukee was a boring town compared to my Chicago, and I wasn't too impressed. We had a ground meat sampler platter for an appetizer and most of it wasn't really good. The bread is very fresh and delicious. Our food was very bland as some people have been saying. We did stay for dessert and coffee and I do have to say it was very good. I had cerme brulee and a cappuccino. I wouldn't come here again for food as it was way too expensive for what it was, but maybe for coffee and dessert.

I went here after a gallery opening prepared to be impressed since everyone in the crowd of us who were going had raved about the French food served here. What I ate was tastey, though not necessarily up to the par the prices would indicate you would be getting for quality. It seemed more that you were paying for the atmosphere of the joint and the fact that you could see and be seen. For the price you pay for a simple soup and sandwich, I'm not entirely convinced this place is worth a return visit--though, as I said, the food was tastey enough.

Have to go along with other reviewers here. Okay French food, nice decor, and a little pricey, considering the food. I had chicken braised in a wine sauce with red potato's. It was only okay with nothing to distinguish it. The rest of the meal was just as uninspired.

I enjoyed my first visit to Coquette Cafe. It's a nice place with a comfortable ambiance, and a clean, historic presentation. The menu selection is small, but varied, so you're likely to find something you can enjoy. Service was friendly and informative. Food was very good. My one complaint would be that while an excellent dining experience, the cost of the meal had me expecting better.

  • Balki B.

This is an excellent restaurant. You definitely have to have the right taste for some of the things on the menu. Maybe a little pricey, but everyone in Milwaukee expects to get a 3 course meal for $20 or they're disappointed.

This was a difficult rating to come up with. I've been here four or five times in the past and generally the food has been good. My last visit was not as enjoyable. We started off with the blue crab tater tots and the onion soup. The onion soup was very good, it had a distinct onion flavor. A simple statement, yes, but I'm surprised by how much doctoring goes on for such a simple dish. This is among the best onion soups in Milwaukee, especially at the price. The crab tater tots had great flavor, but I was hoping for a more crispy texture. We also ordered fries, which came out cold. We sent them back and the freshly fried potatoes were much better. I really enjoyed the accompanying garlic aioli. Our main courses were inconsistent. My salmon and butternut squash risotto cake was pretty good. The crunchy cake paired well with the salmon. The salmon seasoning was not that exciting, but the risotto cake and the red peppers more than made up for it. A very nice dish. My wife's goat cheese ravioli was not so great. Very bland and dry, which was a bit of a surprise considering the list of ingredients. She only had a few bites before giving up on the dish and polishing off the friend. The slice of key lime pie we shared for dessert was a bit too sour/acidic for my taste. I regretted not ordering the crème brulee. As an aside, I was also disappointed in the wine by the glass menu. I sample the burgundy and Bordeaux and found both to be way too simple for the cuisine. I was hoping that there would be secondary characteristics representative of both varietals (tobacco, earth, truffle, etc.) but instead all I got was fruit and alcohol. Overall a bit of a disappointing meal, way too inconsistent from dish to dish. A three rating may be generous, but I also factored in previous experiences here.

Had an outstanding lunch. Great bar and wine list. Escargot were the best I have had in the Midwest - classic preparation and tender and flavorful. Trout was exceptional. Clean and calm French bistro feel. Adequately staffed and great service.

  • G B.

The bread was rock hard, the French onion soup was reminiscent of a cross between Panera's and Campbell's. In general all ordered items needed more salt. For the price this place isn't worth it. On the bright side the bathroom features organic soap and mouthwash (scope).

  • Nick K.

Food was amazing along with the service. Considering the high quality 5 star restaurant rated food, the prices were very good. Dinner for 2 with dessert, soup and wine was under 100$ making this a great value for the food. We had the red snapper, and pumpkin ravioli which was out of this world. I'd highly recommend coquette to anyone looking for a high class meal at a great price. Check them out!

This may be one of the best kept secrets of the 3rd ward. Pricing is modest as is the seating. But the food here is fabulous. Service is great as are all the employees. My hats off to the chef, who trys all kinds of daring mixtures and really scores well. I would compare the food here to many of the higher end restaurants in the Milwaukee venue. Having visited Paris and sampled many of their bistros, I would say that the food here is very comparable, if not better. Thanks for many enjoyable dinners.

I am going to say 5... probably 4.5 but we will call it 5 and the reason for my high score is that for the price, the service level and quality of food was superb. My husband and I dined before a show and they were mindful of our schedule. They allowed us to split the three course menu with and added salad. The crab tater tots were very fresh and tasty. The plain mixed green salad had an AMAZING Dijon vinaigrette - so good. We were really pleased with the grilled shrimp entree. Good, fresh, meaty shrimp cooked perfectly and SIX of them. Finally, the creme bruele was also perfection, not too sweet with a perfect sugar layer on top. All that plus a 9 dollar glass of wine and two coffee's came to just $53.00. The server was good, he even gave us a tip on how to park at the Marcus. I would absolutely recommend to others.

I have so many feelings about Croquette. My husband recommended that we try it -- we love French food and it's a bit closer than Chez Jacques, Pastiche, and Le Reve. I was very excited, and all throughout the day I was looking forward to ordering the Salade Niçoise, which I've ordered and enjoyed at both Pastiche and Le Reve. I have listed what we ordered in full below. They serve bread and butter without a cutting board and a bread knife, which is a bit disconcerting. And unfortunately I wasn't in love with my drink, and the salad was a major disappointment. However,t the cheese plate was excellent. Our server was very good and realized that the salad wasn't up to snuff; he comped the dessert drink I ordered because he "didn't like the look of the salad." I agreed and was pleased that he noticed my disappointment. When there are so many French restaurants in one area, it's logical to think that people who like French food will frequent many them. I have ordered this salad at Le Reve and Pastiche, and while the salads are different, they are both excellent. Coquette's Salade Niçoise can't compare. The waiter, the ambiance, and the cheese plate saved our night. We will definitely be back for the cheese plate (and to try the onion soup, of course). Drinks: Grey Goose Martini with Stuffed Olives (this was a bit too olivey for my taste -- I didn't even finish it) Sidecar (the husb enjoyed it but it wasn't too my taste) Appetizer Cheese plate (seriously the BEST cheese plate I've ever had, without question) Dinner Mac & Cheese (the husb ordered this and loved it. He likes to think of himself as a M&C connoisseur) Salade Niçoise (honestly, this salad was unpalatable. The lettuce looked like it came from a bag that had been left out too long, the dressing tasted like straight mustard, the cubed potatoes were strange and tasteless, and so on. It looked like something I could get at a lousy chain restaurant. I had about two bites before giving up.) Dessert Coquette Cafe (delicious) Chocolate mousse (delicious)

I have not had much luck with French bistros in Milwaukee, but when a French colleague suggested Coquette as being very good, I was sold. Coquette's menu covers the bistro staples and they have a decent, reasonably priced wine list. I zeroed in on the steak frites, cooked medium. It was absolutely delicious. The hanger steak was tender and cooked perfectly, with a nice bit of char on the outside. The fries were cooked and salted perfectly as well. There was some kind of pan sauce on the steak that I usually don't see on steak frites, but it was delicious. The dish also came with a side of béarnaise, which was good, but nothing special. I washed it all down with a very good glass of cabernet, a steal at $9. Our service was very good as well. Our server was warm and friendly but did not hover around the table as we sat for a while and talked about work stuff. I highly recommend Coquette.

I love the Coquette! I have been there several times. The one thing I always get is the onion soup. It is amazing, a small, rich meal unto itself. I have had pork chops there, meatloaf, chicken and fish and its all very good. The sauces are full of flavor and the sides are perfectly prepared. I have also done the cooking classes. For $60 you get a four course meal with wine pairings. The chefs are talented and very entertaining. The wine comes with a little education on each wine, where its from and why it was selected. Very interesting. Its part meal and part entertainment, the best way to spend a Tuesday night. Service is best in town, period.

We've been coming to Coquette Cafe for several years and this most recent visit did not disappoint! Such a relaxed but sophisticated atmosphere, great service, excellent food. Can't wait for our next visit. This time we didn't have an entree in favor of an appetizer and sandwich/flatbread. I highly recommend the Alsatian salmon flatbread and the smoked salmon croissant. Fantastic desserts and perfect espresso too.

We live in Waukesha which is a good 30 minutes drive away. However, whenever we come to Milwaukee for a show, art fair or lake front festival we always stop at Coquette. There are so many wonderful restaurants in MK...but this is our favorite! We have never had a bad meal... lunch, brunch or dinner. The food is always prepared with such care and detail. Sauces and meats are always spot on. The ambiance is pampering. Where else can you get white linens and a wonderful meal? I feel like I am back in Paris at a street side cafe! What is good? Flat bread pizza, grilled salmon, pear and blue cheese salad (I have EVERY time and my favorite)and of course...Coq au Vin! Thank you to the chefs (and cooks) and the waitstaff for making each visit special and predictably delicious!

Pros: the food. I've had the best dessert here in the city. Any chocolate dessert here is amazing. The entrees are good. I've had French onion soup in France and there's here comes pretty close. Cons: for me it has consistently been the service. The servers have never been friendly and I've been here multiple times.

I had been sizing up this place since I moved to Milwaukee over a year ago, largely from the street. From outside, it looks like it would be a cute little eatery with some style. As I searched through reviews, I started to get a sense that it had some culinary substance as well. Finally, I had an opportunity to go. My girlfriend and I were attending the Milwaukee Comedy Festival and wanted to eat nearby. So we made reservations. Upon arrival, I was very surprised at how open the restaurant is. From the outside it looks like it would be fairly small and cozy, but once you walk fully into the restaurant, it feels open but intimate. The food was excellent. We did a variety of appetizers/small plates. There wasn't one that wasn't delicious or completely devoured. The wine list was excellent and well varied to cover a range of tastes and preferences. One of the absolute best aspects of the meal was our waiter. He was extremely knowledgeable of the menu, comfortably engaging, and very attentive. Coquette Cafe has been one of the best dining experiences I have had in Milwaukee.

Oh yum! This place was amazing! We ordered family style so we could all share. The brioche French toast was such a treat. Our waiter highly recommended the salmon pizza which at first was a little unsettling but once he described it we were hooked. The smell in the restaurant was amazing and the service was stellar. Once we ordered the food we ate the plates clean, forget the guy who ordered the salad Their desserts are definitely rich. I had the pistachio try whic was okay it was a lot more dense than it sounded and was too filling. Thentaste was good though.

Coquette is my happy place. The food is creative, high quality, and consistent. The atmosphere is perfect and chill. But the icing on the gateau is the staff - without exception they're warm, funny, welcoming, smart and happy. I love them. Fave dishes: French onion soup, trout, Brussels sprouts, oeufs à la neige, salade niçoise, and any if the soupes du jour. I don't know what to say but to thank CC for being so perfect...my favorite place in town.

I agree with Ellie B. here on the ambiance. It's extremely cozy. Overall I was happy with the food. I got the Grilled Tuna sandwich - which was perfectly done.. and had really great flavor. The fries were crispy good - and went well with the tangy aoili dipping sauce. What fell flat here for me was the service. It was just OK. The server seemed irritated with us and it really gave the place a pretentious feel that I might not otherwise had felt.

This is a temp review until a full meal is experienced here. We came for the bread pudding for the first installment of the Tour de Bread Pudding. Diner 1 had the very non traditional rhubarb white chocolate bread pudding with vanilla creme sauce. No raisins or cinnamon. Complex and delightful flavors. Diner 2 had Oeufs a la Neige - Meringue Snow Eggs with Crème Anglaise, Praline, and Caramel Sauce. Fancy talk for good fluffy stuff on a plate. Diner 3 had mango ginger brûlée and it was a little bit of palate paradise. But cold. this is the second brûlée I have had recently that is served cold...prefer warm. Ambiance - dark and quiet it was mostly empty since it was the end of the night. Not sure why there is a bus station up against a dining booth - a bit weird. Service - pleasant nothing great or bad. which was okay. Looking forward to a return and to use the yelp app and the discount posted there.

We had the best lunch experience here. The ambiance reminds me of Chefs du France at Epcot. It has white table linens, white curtains and the decor has the French look. We had the Yelp certificate to dine and loved the lunch. I had the tuna cooked perfectly on a crusty bun and the tomato soup. The soup was very cool looking with olive oil droplets hanging out on the top. I can't remember what my hubby had but I am sure I took pics of it. The prices are affordable and the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. The cupcake company is in the same building which was a extra bonus.

A mixed experience for me. Some dishes were great, some not so great. The food temperature was good and service excellent but maybe I had overly high expectations. The charcuterie plate is delicious and generously filled with pates, terrines, and rilletes. It really is a whole meal in itself although probably not good for your heart with the amount of fat and cholesterol inside. The PEI mussels with curry broth are great with a very light taste of curry that even non-curry fans can appreciate. The paprika broth mussels were a bit too strong for my tastes however. The casserole of sauteed eggplant was divine with a very well balanced flavor and texture that is almost like meat. The hangar steak was done decently well with good texture but not really as good as real steakhouses. The seared scallops and shrimp are cooked well in a delicious broth but could be a bigger portion size. The profiteroles and ouefs a la neige are alright but there are better dessert choices in Milwaukee.

Awesome restaurant. Whether you are "into" french food or not you should stop into coquette! Had an amazing sunday brunch yesterday. As i am new to french food we started off with a cheese plate and then on to what i consider award winning french toast (not normally a french toast person....this was out of this world delicious). And if you like bacon.... Ooh La La! Coquette Cafe makes me wish i lived in Milwaukee! I would easily be here every weekend. I ended up sitting next to one of the many regulars who have loved Coquette for ages and I now know why. If you get a chance you have to go. You will not be disappointed! The owner and staff are uber nice and inviting, the atmosphere is relaxed yet refined ( don't worry jeans and t's are at home here) and it is situated in a quaint and vibrant part of town. Worth the cab ride if your from out of town.

Two words: scallop gratin. Operative word: gratin. Lesson learned: READ THE MENU CLOSELY, Rachel. It doesn't matter how many conversations you're having at one time. Read the dang menu. I remember loving Coquette. I remember going to Coquette for birthday dinner, many, many moons ago with an ex-boyfriend. I remember being just blown away by my salmon. I remember going to Coquette maybe 3 years ago, and really digging it as well. I guess things change, though this time, I'm partially to blame. Lillet Blanc up to start the evening off? Check. (What else would I do at a French restaurant?) A nice Bordeaux with dinner? Check. Charcuterie, cheese plate, and a smoked salmon/goat cheese flat bread as apps for the table? Check, and double check. And delicious! (The pork with berry paté was delightful, and lord knows I love me some Explorateur. And that flatbread! Nom!) Something's happening here, Coquette. Something nice. Enter dinner. Scallops. I love scallops. What I neglected to notice? Gratin. Scallop/seafood gratin. I did not want heavy, dairy-laden scallop fun-time. I wanted seared scallops with some sort of lovely, anted-up beurre blanc over some greens, or with a nice veg. This is my own fault for not noting. I saw scallops, and I jumped. And... it wasn't that my gratin was bad by any means, but it was certainly quite meh, to be honest. I added a touch of salt and pepper, and this definitely brought out any and all potential that the dish had. That said however, it was still quite flat in terms of flavor, and my seafood seemed a bit overdone. NOW: I understand French food, and I understand richness, texture, and simplicity. But... this dish just didn't do it for me. That said, had I noticed it was a gratin, I wouldn't have ordered it. This is my own fault for being more consumed by conversation than actually paying attention to the menu. Of note: The ambiance? Upscale, old-world France-pants, and cozy. Our service was impeccable; our server was friendly and attentive. She handled our large party expertly. The wine list was nice, and the dessert offering was fabulous and impressive as well. I also dig that Coquette offers myriad options cognizant of all price points -- you can snag a flatbread and a glass of wine for not too much 'scrill... or, you can go all out and order a nice bottle, lovely appetizers, and pricey entrées. Parking's a drag. A three for now, only because of how lackluster I found my scallop dish to be. That said, the positives definitely outweighed the negatives, and I look forward to returning this winter to try some French Onion soup and a different entrée offering.

We have had several quality dinners at Coquette, but tonight we were able to attend one of their cooking demonstrations. I'm sorry- you're hard pressed to find a better way to spend $59 a person. You get incredible food, wine paired with the food, and very entertaining commentary from the Coquette crew. We attended the New Orleans night and enjoyed oysters Rockefeller, chicken and sausage gumbo, shrimp creole with dirty rice, and bourbon pecan pIe. We left feeling full, slightly buzzed and entertained. If you get the chance, sign up for one of these dinners- they are so fun and delicious, we can't wait to do it again.

Let me start by stating that I walked to the restaurant from work with one of our IT directors. Since the ambiance is upscale, old-world French (love the cafe curtains), warm and cozy, it was wasted on us. Too bad for me, I would love to come back with my husband! The service was wonderful, the server was very attentive on this busy Friday. I ordered a lemonade (work lunch, boo-hoo, can't have wine) and the Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwich which was served with cole slaw. I hate hate hate mustard so I am limited when the menu uses the word 'dijon' like a teenager uses the work 'like'. The sandwich was served on toasted, buttered bread with thin slices of chicken breast, provincial pesto, provolone cheese, and arugula. It was fantastic. As chicken breast sandwiches go, this one stands alone against all others. It was that good. The cole slaw was made with a nice light dressing that was very tasty. It definitely held up to the cabbage without being overpowering. My co-worker ordered the daily lunch special with soup and a salad (I can't remember exactly what it was called but the portion size of the soup was large enough for a man's appetite and the salad had cranberries, walnuts and goat cheese sprinkled throughout. It looked fantastic. He comes here often because he likes it so much. I look forward to coming back in the evening for a romantic dinner.

J'adore Coquette Cafe. I worked in a French bistro in NYC for years and have struggled to find something similar in Milwaukee to be my go to. I think Coquette is it. French bistro Rule One: Lillet on the menu. Holler! And they don't look at you like you're a complete mormon when you ask for it like some places that don't carry it. The ambiance is lovely - warm and cozy, perfect for a quiet dinner. That said I also went here last New Years Eve with a large group and had a great time. The food is always stellar as is the service. French bistro Rule Two: intense servers. The waiters are serious here and know their stuff. Food I love: Plain field green salad to start: mustard vinaigrette dressing with shallots I think Moules: white wine, apple broth (could eat these all day) Cheese plate: generous portions of creamy goodness served with breads, nuts, grapes, apples, and chutney Creme Brûlée: oh emm gee (French Bistro Rule Three: amazing desserts) Also, when we were discussing if we should splurge on dessert, our waiter said the creme brûlée was the best in town. I was simultaneously "checking in" on yelp and up pops a free dessert check in offer! Score! The creme brûlée ended up being phenomenal AND free. Bonus.

Coquette cafe doesn't look as romantic and lovely as Le Reve (at least in the day time). That doesn't mean the food isn't as delicious. I had the French ham and cheese. It came with pomme frites. It was as good as any in Paris. My friend had the roasted chicken and mashed potatoes. She loved it. We started with the french onion soup, which was very good. The desserts were delicious. My friend had the waffle with roasted apples. I had meringue with creme anglaise and caramel. It was divine. Service was top notch. Friendly, prompt and welcoming. Lunch was pretty busy for a chilly day in late November. If your'e in the third Ward, looking for French, check it out.

My first visit to Coquette Cafe occurred this past Sunday, when I used the (fabulously-underused-in-Milwaukee) "Open Table" app. Quick side note: seriously. Open Table. Use it and let it grow, Milwaukee! This app is awesome for table reservations, and we need more Milwaukee restaurants on it, pronto! But I digress, back to our meal: a group of girlfriends and I wanted to find a new spot to brunch, and one in our party had dined at the Cafe before, and thought their food was pretty great. We were the first to arrive at 11am that morning, and other customers quickly began to file in. The decor was cozy and the building exudes the kind of charm that can be readily found in the exposed cream city brick, turn-of-the-century refurb factory in Milwaukee's Third Ward. I am a big fan of the space. The service was pretty darn near excellent. Our server was a friendly, perky blonde woman who graciously and deftly handled our party of 6. Similarly, the other serves were friendly and did not let our water glasses or coffee get too low - major points! Where this experience fell flat for me, was the food. Most in the group had either the Omelet du Jour, which consisted of eggs, chicken and leeks...how could you go wrong there, right? Well, the flavors didn't "pop". One couldn't really distinguish between the flavors, which was odd because the omelet did not contain the ingredients mixed in with the eggs, as in traditional omelets - they were wrapped up inside the rubbery eggs like a little egg burrito. The side salad that accompanied was also a letdown... [Firstly, when paying $12 bucks for an omelet, I want something awesome and hearty to accompany it...just chop up some Yukon gold potatoes (or fingerling, if you want to be regional and classy), toss them in EVOO and add a little tarragon, and I'm a sold. Warm food + warm food = happy tummy] The salad was completely coated in a semi-sweet dressing...and as I am not a fan of either salad dressing drenched on my salad, nor salad for breakfast, the whole dish was a fail. My dining companions had also ordered either the Omelet du Jour, or the French toast. Presentation of the toast: 8. Taste: 4. I think it was best put by my partner, "Well, for being a French cafe...I was expecting "Wow! Real French-French Toast!"...but this was more like..."Ok...meh, its French toast..." LOL. Far too sweet, and again, a total muddle of flavors and textures, with no distinguishing lead flavors. I would definitely come back again for lunch or dinner, to give the food another go - perhaps it was an off-morning for them. And the service, which I tend to remember longer than how the food tasted, was well worth the return trip. Bon Appétit!

Went to Coquette Cafe for dinner prior to a show at the Starlight Theater. We split the pear and spinach salad then I had the braised short ribs and my fiance had the ravioli which is stuffed with goat cheese and topped with a brown butter sauce. Both the meals were fantastic. I thought the restaurant was fairly priced and the service was average. The space is nicely decorated and has nice ambiance to it. Good place to take a date.

A friend was visiting from out of town, and we decided last minute to grab some lunch downtown. It was pretty early, a little before 11:00, so we kind of walked around until we found something that was open. Coquette happened to catch our eye, so we walked in just as the doors were opening and were seated right away. I have been to Coquette once before, for downtown dining week, and as a service industry employee (read: hardly any $$) have been intimidated by the normally-priced menu there since, so I was excited to stop by for their lunch specials, which are definitely reasonable. For a while my friend and I were the only people in the restaurant - it was early - but I noted a surprising number of servers and two hosts working which was potentially a little awkward as seven people thanked us on the way out, but at the same time it was nice that every one of them acknowledged us. In some restaurants around the area, none of those people would so much as glance in your direction. Our server was attentive and friendly, refilling my water glass several times even before I noticed that I needed it, which is always a really big plus for me. Apparently I was really thirsty that day so that little extra touch of service was nice. Now for the food: our server was very gracious in giving us a little extra time to choose what we wanted to order, because literally everything on the menu sounded good to me. We were also catching up so it took us a while to get things figured out. My friend ordered a flatbread pizza with house-made fennel sausage, roasted mushrooms and asiago cheese. The dish was light, the perfect portion for my friend who isn't a big eater, and the flavor components were perfectly balanced. The sausage was big on flavor without being overwhelming, pairing nicely with the tart asiago, and the mushrooms rounded everything out. I ordered first the soupe du jour, which was a sweet potato soup with spiced pepitas. I am not kidding you when I say that I have had dreams about this soup. It was really nice and thick, with a wonderful creamy sweet/savory flavor that was complemented by the spices and the crunch of the pepitas. The portion was bowl-sized for the price of most cups at other restaurants. I never wanted it to end. Then I also ordered the Leg of Duck Confit with sauteed Brussels Sprouts, Button Mushrooms, and Pomegranate Reduction. I am a suck for duck confit, and this was prepared perfectly. It was all I could do to remind myself that I was in a relatively classy place, and that I shouldn't just take the whole leg in my hands and eat it like I was at KFC. Even the brussels sprouts, not usually my favorites, were lovely, with a bit of caramelization and crunch. The only thing I was iffy about was the pomegranate reduction - I might have preferred a sauce with a bit less acidity to balance out the "greeny" flavor of the sprouts. But the mushrooms kind of made up for it. I still finished everything on the plate with pleasure... Definitely worth a visit for lunch, and I'm looking forward to trying the dinner sometime in my financially improved future!

I love the ambiance here - dimly lit and cozy. The food and service were great. We ordered an Alsatian flatbread to share, which had gruyere, blue cheese, pear, walnuts, and some balsamic. I ordered the caramelized onion and goat cheese ravioli and it was delicious. For dessert we split the special, a rhubarb bread pudding with cream sauce. I cannot resist a rhubarb dessert and this definitely met my expectations. My dining companions were really impressed with their food too - onion soup, coq au vin, and poulet roti. This is a great place to linger over a bottle of wine and enjoy some conversation. I would definitely come back here again.

Nice place, as soon as you get in you have the feel of a French Bistro! typical decor of the french style and warmness I took the House-Smoked Organic Chicken Breast Stuffed with Oven Dried Tomato & Spinach, Sweet Water Organic Lettuce, Candied Walnuts, Granny Smith Apple, Goat Cheese, and Tarragon Vinaigrette , I highly recommend the salad it is very high quality, the walnut are so well cooked i just was in love with this type of salad it just melt and you have this mix btw salt and sweet that makes it unique My friend took a salad nicoise, i found it the "usual" Also we took a plate of mussel plate check the pictures Overall experience 4 star. I would go back to the restaurant and i would recommend it

Had a business lunch here the other day. We all enjoyed the onion soup. Some of the best I have ever tasted! I had the goat cheese raviolis..very tasty, complex favors. Well done...perhaps a little less oil on the pasta next time! The mousse was wonderful too!

Coquette used to be one of my favorite lunch spots in town and upon moving back I was looking forward to it being in my regular rotation. Went for lunch with a friend and I was pretty underwhelmed.... I had the coquette cubano and soup du jour, my friend had the special hanger steak on the house made bun. First off, only half the restaurant was open for seating which made for very close quarters. It was odd being able to hear every conversation in the place. Service was very good as expected but the food was okay. I figured the menu would be more classically French but was more of a plethora of international sandwiches. I thought.... Ok I'll give something less traditional a try. I'm not sure if it was just our sandwiches and soup but nothing was hot. Barely warm really. Hanger steak sandwich had a terrible bread to meat ratio and the bread seemed as though it was a day old. My Cubano's cheese was not melted and I think it may have been missing ingredients. I'm sad to say that I'm no longer a fan of Coquette, I'm disappointed in what it has become.

Veal meatloaf tasted especially "young" --delish!! The French onion soup is spot-on --not overly salty like so many restaurants serve. Our server Julianna, struck the perfect balance of helpfulness without being intrusive. She maintained her politeness despite some members of our group being quite demanding(talking about you, Mom). Dessert: key lime pie was fantastic--perfect balance between tart and sweet.....just wait for the tartness to "git-ya'"!!

Great atmosphere in this cozy bistro in the 3rd ward. The individual baguettes were fresh and delightful. Seems like the entrees are always well flavored and executed with style. We shared a charcuterie among three or four of us and it was an excellent offering - very French!

Love it. Hangar steak with aioli fries, lunch sandwiches (with aioli fries), great salads, great desserts. Love the french onion soup, good escargot too, and again aioli fries. I would come here just for the fries, haha. Don't forget the watermelon gazpacho on the summer menu is fantastic.

Stopped here on Saturday evening and was delighted with both the food and the service. I had made a reservation and was glad that I did as it was pretty full at 5:30. As everyone in our group was looking at lighter dining that night, we had sandwiches, pizza, salad and soups. The soup du jour was a coconut curry-pumpkin which sounded strange at first but was the best. The onion soup was on the mark as well. Next time, I want to go more with the French cuisine and try the entrees and appetizers. Parking on the street in front was tight but plenty around the back and complimentary in the Landmark Building lot (not the part of the lot that is "Permit Only") behind the building.

I came here with some friends last Saturday night only after we couldn't get into a new BBQ place next door because our 1 hour wait turned into 2 and we left quite disgruntled. Thankfully Coquette came to our rescue and was very accommodating for our party of 5. They were able to seat us almost immediately (it was almost 9pm though). Our server was very friendly and efficient as they wasted almost no time to get us our drinks and bread. All of us were very pleased with our food too although I admit we were happy to be eating anything at that point. I had the red wine hanger steak and thought it was outstanding. $22 may have been a little steep for steak and fries but believe me when I say this dish didn't skimp on flavor. This was my second time here and my first time since the change of ownership about a year or so ago. I love the ambiance here and it's safe to say I'll be back.

I had been wanting to try Coquette for a while (or at least some French food in Milwaukee) and finally did this Wednesday with the International Supper Club. I liked the atmosphere, ambiance, and Third Ward location. We all sampled some appetizers. Of course the cheese plate was good but the smoked salmon pizza with goat cheese was super tasty. For dinner I ordered two more of the appetizers- the French Onion soup (delish and a must-try if you love French Onion soup) and the Leg of Duck Confit (pretty good, especially if you like duck). My hubs got the Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf, which he enjoyed (and I enjoyed a few bites of). Not something I would typically order though. The company was great and I enjoyed coming to my first International Supper Club. Overall I enjoyed Coquette and I'd like to come back- maybe for date night and also to try to the Coq au Vin.

We liked the overall atmosphere of the place. It seems like a good place to grab a drink with a friend or to have a good dinner. I love french food and had pretty high expectations for this place. The food and the drinks were well made but we didn't walk away thinking it was a great meal. Compared to Le Reve or Pastiche it was just good.

Laughing at Rachel's review: gratin. Let me start my review with: gratin. Coquette, how I longingly missed thee. Coquette always had a special place, as the only place who could mimic the meals of France. After a couple of years missing one of my fondest restaurants in Milwaukee, Coquette Cafe, I paid a visit during lunch on a Tuesday. I smiled upon walking in memories gone by. I relished in reading the menu, and began the debate of mind to choose the perfect dish. The waiter assisted my lack of synapse with the dish of the day: a crepe of chicken, mushrooms, sauce, and...gratin. The gratin did have nicely cooked potatoes, with a nice crunchy top. The chicken was slightly overcooked, the mushrooms helped invoke some flavor that was more than salt. I'm so saddened by salt, and imagining that I could get the same food thrill by licking a salt block. The true test always seems to be the number of water glassed consumed post meal, and how long the salt tongue lingers. This meal would be a 5 for salt. The starter bread and butter was excellent. Perfect mouth watering butter. Another guest of the party had the french onion soup, which looked delightful and received a good response. The roast beef sandwich fell short. The flatbread pizza was received with disappointment, as compared to the availability in the Milwaukee area. Sadly, Coquette will be removed from the birthday list of possible places to enjoy.

Arguably 3.5 stars. Pleasant, upscale atmosphere with food to match. If the occasion calls for bland, inoffensive and slightly fancy, this is the place. Jambalaya was nice, if unremarkable. Service was quite good. If I judged on image and/or service and/or presentation, it would be a 4-5 star rating. In the end, unimaginative food takes the place down a peg and a half in my estimation. It is not necessary to make the food taste plain while you make it look pretty. Also, they could do something to remedy the echoing noise.

The dining was an elegant experience with my boyfriend and his brother and dad and their wives. We feasted on mixed appetizers like mussels simmering in a delicious broth, french cheeses, red grapes I had french onion soup, and frites. My boyfriend has meatloaf. The restaurant is like a french painting with high ceilings, white linens, candle light, and the waitresses are very tall, graceful, and petite the way most young French women can appear. The presentation of plate settings and silverware and the ambiance during the evening felt airy, light in nature, and the lighting was dimmed for a more intriguing experience. We sat at a long table and passed around the different entrees and the dessert was very sweet it was cannoli with strawberry and it was very tarty. The others ordered chocolate sauced covered flaky pastry items and I couldn't tell if we were sharing or hording more of what we liked toward the end of the night. So we left really late like around eleven and the server we had never missed a beat. She was impressive and very attentive the whole two or three hours through.

From start to finish, this place could not have been more spectacular, and I am not easily impressed. Had a glass of Shiraz, the soup of the day - very rich tomato basil, grilled salmon with butternut squash risotto cake, sautéed spinach, and marinated roasted red peppers, all in a white truffle butter sauce. My dining companion also had wine, the soup of the day, caramelized onion and goat cheese ravioli in a browned butter sauce. We shared a pistachio caramel tart and warm chocolate cake. It was all superb. The hostess graciously took our coats when we arrived. The waitress was perfect throughout. Time seemed to stand still while we were there -- it was that peaceful. I will return soon and often to try more menu options.

An incredibly solid spot in the Third Ward. Great food and good cocktails. I had the staple French Onion soup. Not the best I've had, but very very good. Not too much cheese and the taste and consistency was excellent. I had the veal meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. Excellent comfort food. Had the St. Germain cocktail and the Side Car both of which were tasty, refreshing and the side car packed a punch. Passed on dessert but I have no doubt that it would have been solid. The atmosphere is a bit upscale so don't dress down or you might feel a bit out of place. However, this place isn't crazy upscale, so I doubt it matters much. I'm going to one of their cooking classes next week which I hear are excellent. They aren't cheap at 59 bucks per person, but I hope to obtain some serious skills.

I'm a big fan of this place. I've been there periodically and always had pretty good meals. Last night, my dad took me there for my birthday and we had an awesome meal. All 4 of us at dinner enjoyed our food. My parents thought the soup was amazing. I think they even tried to get the recipe. It was the soup of the day (some type of tomato soup). I hear the escargot were good, but snails just ain't my thang. Two of us had salads and I was really impressed how big they were. I forget about how big midwestern portions can be. The trout and the steak were both excellent, but my dad thought the red wine sauce on the steak was too much. The bread is really good of course because of their association with Harlequin. They have a good wine list and decent prices. The only thing I was unimpressed by was the dessert.

Although Coquette is no longer owned by the D'Amatos, it still turns out very good French food. Had dinner there tonight, and was reliable as always. They make a good French onion, not too salty (though Jacques cafe is more authentic to what you truly get in Paris). I tried one of their flat breads for the first time, it's a great choice for an app or a light dinner. The sauce was a little sweet for me but it's not an Italian restaurant so that's ok. All in all, very good food and great service.

The coq au vin and Alsatian flatbreads are both outstanding, but the seasonal (monthly) menus are always inventive and interesting. Coquette is a great place for lunch or dinner, for a business function or a romantic night. It hits every note just right: service, ambiance, and food.

I went here for my birthday and the food was definitely delicious. I got the Prince Edward Island Mussels as an appetizer and it was wonderfully light and delicious. There was just enough curry to give it an extra flavorful "oomph" to the dish. For the entree I ordered the Grilled Hanger Steak with Red Wine Shallot Sauce, Pommes Frites, and Garlic Aioli. The hanger steak was over cooked by a fraction but it was still very good. I think I probably would have liked a different side than Pommes Frites, since I'm not huge on greasy things, but it was still delicious and the aioli was light and garlicky (just how I like it). I had creme brulee for dessert, and it was good. Not great, but good. I'm picky about my creme brulees and the custard was a little too runny and top was not evenly caramelized. The staff were quick and even though it was a busy night (a saturday with many people waiting to be seated) they were attentive and quick to respond. The food came out a little slow, but our server quickly came to explain why there was a delay. All in all, pretty yummy food and service! :)

I'm truly surprised at the number of reviews that aren't stellar. Coquette has been a discovery for me and currently my favorite place to go to lunch. The salad, mentioned previously as being just lettuce, is simple and elegant. It doesn't need anything else on it because of the superb vinaigrette that they have. It would detract from the truly simple and wonderful flavors that make me crave that salad. There's not been one dish had at Coquette that I wouldn't have again. Their quiche melts in my mouth every single time, and their soups are dreams that play in your head later after you eat it. As for the atmosphere, it's very much a bistro type atmosphere. It's unpretentious while also making you wonder if you're still in Milwaukee, because other places do not look like this. It may not be one of the expensive steakhouses in town that have been ever more ubiquitous over the years, but there's a quiet and simple elegance that keeps me coming back every week. The service has always been prompt and the bread and butter is a nice touch when you first come in. Whether you want a lunch with a friend or someplace romantic and charming to share on a first date, Coquette is the place to go.

I had a business lunch here and from the instant I walked in, I knew it was a winner. The hostess was very gracious, and led me to my seat, asking for the names of the other people I was meeting with so that I wouldn't have to keep my eyes on the door. i got the french onion soup with gruyere---yowza. I dont like onions that much, but that is basically a pot of delicious once the cheese is in the picture. For my meal, I had a salad nicoise w/o any meat protein. Their grainy dijon mustard dressing is outstanding. I'm currently trying to shed some pounds, otherwise i would've been ALL OVER the deserts.

The food was ok. We had the French onion soup and Escargot for starters. (The soup was pretty good and the Escargot was ok) We then had the Coq Au Vin and the Goat Cheese Ravioli for our main course. (I liked the goat cheese Ravioli but the Coq au vin wasnt anything I'd write home about) The seating is too close for comfort in my opinion. We had a drunk couple next to us and it felt like they were sitting at our table. If you're looking for an intimate dinner with some form of privacy then this isn't the place for you. We could literally rub elbows with the people sitting at the table next to us.

Friend took me here. Came on a Wednesday night. Overall the food we tried was very good. I had the ravioli, which didn't come with "sauce" per say, but it was tasty, and not heavy which I liked. My friend had a meat dish (i forget which one now). House red wine was decent, and service was good. It was overall, it's cute and I'd come back if I was in the area.

Being a fan of this restauranteur I was sorely dissapointed. The atmostephere was bleak, the service poor and worst of all the meal was borderline get up and leave. It may have been the Chef's night off with my 16 year old cousin manning the kitchen, but we'll see. Our food was greasy (Duck with mustard spaetzel) with my wife's seafood entree being almost inedible. Truly dissapponted but again, it may have been a fluke.

I had lunch here on a weekday. I ordered the Charcuterie plate. This was delicious. If I lived in Milwaukee this place would be a regular haunt. The staff are friendly and helpful. This will be on my "must visit" list for my next trip to Milwaukee.

Great atmosphere, great food, and very professional service. They were nice enough to bring out a birthday candle for my girlfriend upon special request. Best French Onion soup I've had in Milwaukee. My girlfriend had the Hangar steak and I had a large salad that included a chicken breast, apple slices, and goat cheese. Everything we had (including the dessert) was wonderful. Great spot for a night out. The chefs at this place have something to be proud of.

We haved loved coming to coquette for the trout. We were there today and thought the preparation had changed....more lemon and less brown butter. The brown butter is lots better. Please go back to the original preparation.

Coqette Cafe was delicious! I came here while on business in Milwaukee. I ordered the goat cheese ravioli with Oyster mushrooms and the salad with pears, grapes, walnuts, and more. Everything was delicious, especially the ravioli. For dessert, I had a caramel-pistachio tart, which was unexpectedly good. Walked away feeling pleasantly full/satiated. The ambiance was really nice and the service was great (bonus points awarded for our server, who was especially nice to my slightly awkward colleague who likes to joke around, and was speaking french).

Came here for lunch one day. Got the BLT they had. It was pretty bad. The lettuce was wilted to the point I did not want to eat it. The chili was very average and seemed store bought. Maybe dinner is different but overall very below average food at best for lunch.

I'm truly surprised that Milwaukee has so many good restaurants! And this is from someone who has lived in California and is currently living in Chicago! There are many French restaurants such as Coquette Cafe that have been wonderful to try! I decided to have a slightly lighter dinner and opted for french onion soup, pear and spinach salad, and a grilled pear tart with caramelized onions and walnuts. French onion soup was too salty and cheesy. Spinach salad was pretty good, but I prefer mixed greens. Spinach always leaves a strange texture on my teeth! But the pear tart was the star! Soo....good! However, it was the third and last appetizer served so I only took one bite and took it to go. You must get the pear tart! I felt too full for dessert so just got a mocha cappuccino, which was average.

This restaurant gets four stars because of their great customer service and that is due to the expertise of their manager, William. I most recently had a not so great dining experience there on Mother's Day with my family but William made sure we left happy. It is so hard to find this kind of enlightened customer service around Milwaukee and I appreciate it so much when I find it. Big Kudos to William. We look forward to returning to this much beloved Cafe.

We dined here with friends whose engagement we were recently celebrating. I called the day of for reservations, and they were extremely accommodating with fitting us in. We all loved our experience. It's such a great, cozy spot! I really enjoyed my spinach salad and the veal meatloaf; my fiance felt the same about his duck confit chili and pork with spaetzle. However the best part of the meal was the service. We had Richard as our waiter and he was so attentive as well as accommodating. Our original table was located next to a heater, and it was literally impossible to sit a few minutes without wanting to pass out. He was so eager to seat us elsewhere even though the hostess originally told him we could not be accommodated. Hats off to great service!

Perfect place for a client lunch; you can have a discussion without straining to hear. Croque monsieur was flavorful and not filling. Hangar steak omelette cooked to perfection and salad greens tender. Service was outstanding, informative, not bothersome, very professional. Stick with regular coffee...cappucino was bitter.

Maybe it's because the sun was perfectly shining on the outdoor patio. Maybe it was the great company. Maybe it's because the food was perfect. Bacon Wrapped Strauss Veal Meatloaf on bed of garlic mashed potatoes and green beans: the finest consistency, strong and perfect taste. my dad noted that is was the "best meatloaf" he's ever had...and this man knows his meatloaf green beans + shallot: al dente, garlic, perfect....absolutely phenom salmon + grape tomato + red onion + caper + goat cheese flatbread pizza: super thin crust made it easy to enjoy it all without getting too full. strong, complementary flavors. 4 bean + barley + basil + ham soup: hearty, creamy. lovely. salad with spinach + grape + pear + blue cheese + walnut + balsamic vinaigrette : one of the best salads i've ever had. it's hard to go wrong with a combination of these ingredients, but this was exceptional. Ok, so the food was perfect. We didn't even look at the wine/beverage/dessert list. A bit pricey, but well worth it. We were the only group seated outside in the autumn sunshine. Felt very european. one of the best lunches i've had in a LONG time.

The boyfriend and I had our 3 year anniversary dinner here (awwww!) and I'm glad we found such a delightful little place! Upon arriving, a little baguette and dish of butter is brought to the table. The baguette is fantastic - you can tell it is made on site. I suspect the butter is too - it was creamy and delicious. The wine list is small, but good. We shared a bottle of pinot noir that was really quite good. We also shared some mussels to start with - they were served in a delicious curry sauce. For my main, I had goat cheese filled ravioli. I wasn't expecting them to be toasted, but they were. Quite tasty! The boyfriend had the bacon-wrapped meatloaf, which he also quite enjoyed. For dessert, we split a chocolate mousse. Delicious! This will definitely be a stop on any future Milwaukee visits. Delicious food, great service, relaxed atmosphere.

Not terribly French, but that does not have to be a bad thing. The food was great and the atmosphere is awesome. Easy parking too! They are on Opentable which is always a plus. Will definitely go back.

From the moment you walk into Coquette Cafe, you know you're in the right place. I said to the hostess, "This place smells GREAT." Garlic. Lots of it. And I love it. I really liked Coquette. The restaurant looks like a French bistro. The waiters are dressed in long French aprons. And the food: French. I love it. I had the Croque Madame, which, for me, is a test at a bistro. It was pretty close to perfect. My colleague had the tilapia sandwich, which was both tasty and a piece of art. I will be in Milwaukee a lot in the upcoming months. I look forward to several returns to Coquette.

I absolutely love this place. I went here with a group of friends, the service and food were fabulous. Everything from the appetizers to the dessert, it didn't disappoint. The french onion soup is a must to start your meal with. I was there celebrating my birthday and they decorated my dessert beautifully for my special day. Coquette Cafe will always have a special memory for me.

I've been to the Coquette Cafe a few times in the past few years, and the one thing that seems to be holding back this place is the attitude. The staff turns up their noses at us no matter how much food and wine we order, and despite being polite and patient. It's a matter of significant arm-twisting to get help, what little service you get is achingly slow, and the staff also refuse to split checks - a very significant problem for a party of four single people with a tab of several hundred dollars! The food was quite enjoyable, though likely a bit on the overpriced side. Still, even the world's most fantastic food (which this wasn't) would be overshadowed by the feeling of smug condescension that this place exudes.

Coquette Cafe used to be our favorite place in Milwaukee. But beware-it has changed hands and it is only a shadow of its former greatness. We had dinner there mid Feb 2012, and although the wonderful atmosphere is intact the food and service were really substandard. The service was absolutely amateurish. Our side of green beans was presented with our salad, and after being turned away, showed up a few minutes later, actually about a minute after our server apologized. The runner tried to clear the table before our entrees were served. We ordered two of the tried and true standards: Hanger steak and the veal/bacon meatloaf. Both were mediocre. What had previously been a silky delicious meatloaf was an indifferent ordinary meatloaf (by the way, served with beans, which would have been nice to warn of the duplication). The spinach salad and the wine were excellent, but that is our last visit to dear old Coquette. E and J

One of two Best restaurants I have been to in Milwaukee, along with Crazy Water. Fairly casual, but well-executed. The kind of unpretentious dining that is hard to find, but worth the search, in French restaurants.

Hated this restaurant! I have heard so much about Coquette Café that I was anxious to finally experience it. The decor was nice, pleasant and warm, but the customer service was pretty chilly. I was shocked at how rude we were treated and that definitely affected our dining experience. The food was horrible. Where was this excellent food I had heard so much about? The normal chef must have been off the night I visited. I will never waste my hard earned money there again.

Great atmosphere -- charming place. The food is decent too -- I could fuss about the frites being more like fries (meaning more drive through than bistro........). Tthe food is decent, but certainly not on par with some of the Belgian or French places that I like in DC -- but the place is definitely very good -- and just enjoyed the whole experience.

Although a little pricier than I would hope for as a college student, visiting Milwaukee was a special occasion and choosing to dine at Coquette Cafe was a rewarding experience! The ambiance is comfortably classy and the staff is friendly and professional. I went with one of their specials for the night - Salmon filet and greens on bacon risotto and it was to die for. Perfectly cooked, the salmon was super tastefully paired with its risotto mate. For dessert, my partner and I shared the cannoli, a delicate and super sweet choice. I would not have been able to finish it on my own, so be prepared to share! I definitely recommend this restaurant.

My favorite restaurant. The coq au vin is exquisite, the duck confit is solid (served with a great sauce), the peach sorbet is perfectly smooth and citrus-y, and the tea is fine, too. Later at night, the ambiance becomes especially lovely, with candlelight flickering around the place.

The Third Ward has no shortage of restaurants, and Coquette stands out among them simply because it has such a classic approach in an area where, face it, the other places try to out-trend each other. The coq au vin is simply fabulous. Ditto the chocolate mousse. The dirty Grey Goose martini is also fab. Will definitely be back next time I'm in town.

I've been here on two occasions, once for their Mother's Day brunch and this past weekend for a dinner date. Both times the dining area was mostly full and the wait staff was great. Every stage of the meal from appetizer through desert was fantastic and had beautifully presented. I would not hesitate to come back again!

Great Place and excellent food. I ordered the Leg of Duck Confit which is one of my favorite french dishes and shared a dessert with my friend. It was a Cannoli with Mascarpone, Dried Cherries, Pistachios, Caramel Sauce. Service is great too and the food is not as expensive as i thought it would be. If you're in Milwaukee downtown , check this place .

Very delicious food and very friendly staff! I had the Mac and cheese (pretty boring for a French restaurant I know). However, it was probably the best French style mac and cheese I've ever had. Also do not leave without getting desert (the creme brûlée was particularly delicious)!

So I've been to Coquette Cafe several times now. Out of the several times I went there, I can say that my experience (food-wise and service-wise) was a solid 4 only once. The last time I was there, the food was a solid 3, the service was a not-so-solid 2. Pretentiousness, when it comes to restaurants, can be "sort of" justified with great food and superb service (think "Henri" in Chicago). Let's be honest, as soon as we hear the word "French," an easily discernible whiff of pretentiousness appears out of thin air. Well, prepare to cut this "bouffée d'air" with a French butter knife in Coquette Cafe! So here goes my first slice of beef, or should I say "bœuf?!" Pristine white sheets of paper covering tablecloths. Really? "Bœuf" slice number two: Please, instruct your wait staff not to point at your clients' food! S'il vous plaît, don't point at the food I am about to eat with your finger while straining your brain trying to recall what kind of pâté is on my plate. Picture this: a powerless finger stranded over a plate of pâté randomly traveling from one kind to another (there was 6 kinds, I believe) in a futile attempt to follow its master's trace of thought. And my last complaint: The food. It is either a hit or a miss, my experience has not been consistently good at Coquette Cafe. Last time, potatoes in one of the main entrees were severely undercooked. They were diced and, I am guessing, boiled for about 5 minutes. Crunchy texture has its place in cooking/eating, but not when it comes to potatoes, in my opinion. My final verdict: It is an okay place, overly pretentious and highly priced. Prétention is the kind of hot air that helps inflate prices very well. Would I go back? Maybe, for lunch, if nothing better was available.

Descriptive phrase: passable French cafe. Coquette Cafe is a little removed from the hustle of the Third Ward, but it's cute and large and one of the few truly French-forward restaurants in the area. Four of us came for a weekday dinner during Downtown Dining Week, and perhaps (I hope) that was the issue. We each got the $25 dinner deal. I started with their Potage Parmentier leek and potato soup. It was creamy and pleasant, if unmemorable. For entrees I got to try both the Bacon-Wrapped Strauss Veal Meatloaf and Coq au Vin, both of which I was excited for reading the menu. My meatloaf was good but not great; the bacon and mashed potatoes showed up but the veal fell flat. The braised chicken dish was better; moist and filling. For dessert we split a Chocolate Mousse and Oeufs à la Neige, which were like little meringue eggs. Both were, again, fine. Downtown Dining Week is a Catch-22: it's a great time for people to try out restaurants they might normally not but you're also not going to get that restaurant's standard offering or performance. I have to believe Coquette Cafe serves more fulfilling dishes on the regular, but my DDD visit didn't leave me wanting more.

Really warm place in a nice space. Staff was super helpful. My wife and I enjoyed a nice Valentine's dinner. I had the meatloaf with bacon. I don't even remember what my wife had. We forewent dessert because we had a show to catch at the Riverside. Richard was a very helpful and attentive server. Can't wait to be in Milwaukee again - Cafe Coquette is definitely on our list to visit again.

This restaurant is a jem in Milwaukee. We had really good service that knew how to say the French names with an appropriate accent. We came for Downtown Dinning and had a great experience. The atmosphere is quaint like a small bistro. You don't realize how big it is until you have to find the bathroom. For starters we had the soup - it was so good I asked for bread to sop up the remnants. For our entrée we had the coq au vin. This was my first time having this classic and was pleased with the rich flavors and tender texture if the chicken. For dessert we had merengue snow eggs with salted camel sause with a sprinkle of praline crumble- a wonderful salt and sweet dish. Over all I recommend Coquette Cafe for anyone who wants to take the time to savor and enjoy their food.

First thing: If I could give it 3.5 stars, I would, because three seems too little and four too many. But I digress...Coquette Cafe: I'd recommended for lunch! The French Onion soup is one of my favorites I've had so far. Just a crock full of onions and that salty cheese melted on top was to die for. I'd go back just for that alone! First dining experience here I had a salad with pears and nuts with a light dressing on the side. Dinner was my second experience here for a double date. I enjoyed a ravioli dish that was fair. The raviolis were a little bit on the tougher side, almost seeming a little over cooked. Bummer. The menu seemed a little off to me at that time, with American style staples like a cheeseburger and fries (though, the French like these things too, I guess). Despite this, the atmosphere is freaking adorable: curvy chairs with woven seats, half-curtains covering the large printed windows, oil lamps, and high vaulted ceilings with a tall bar at the back. It was open and bustling, just as I'd imagine a French cafe to be.

I had been meaning to check this place out for quite a while. It's one of the few French spots in town so was looking forward to it. Right off the bat, the sourdough bread was on point. We were in a larger group, and apparently we had to order off the limited menu. Except for if you didn't want to. Which half did. It ended up being confusing, and just started the night off weirdly. I ended up getting the hangar steak w/ frites from the limited menu. The fries were pedestrian and under seasoned. The steak was cooked nicely though. Beers were reasonable, and the service was good. It's a cozy atmosphere, so maybe it was our mistake taking a group here. Looking forward to trying it again on a more intimate level, but it was all around pretty solid.

Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Milwaukee. Whenever I come in from Nashville, this is on my "must-do" list. The decor is absolute perfection. As you enter the restaurant, you feel as if you have been transported to Paris, France. The expansive windows offer a fabulous view of the third ward, and I love the old advertisement posters, mirrors and doors. My mom and I split a house-made lemonade and also a sparkling water. We then did a little mixing of our own at the table to make for two bubbly lemonades. I highly recommend doing the same. No shame in making yourself such a fabulous "mock-tail." After perusing the menu for a bit (we couldn't make up our minds) we decided to share both the Croque Madame (we asked for our egg to be cooked hard) and the roasted beet and arugula salad. While we waited, the waitress brought us fresh bread and butter (a staple at any Parisian cafe), and I found myself going back for seconds...and thirds... Our entrees were fabulous. The combination of the two was just right, and I'm glad we were able to sample both items. Not to mention the sandwich came with pommes frites, which could not have been any better. They were cooked perfectly. The lunch was so fresh and healthy, which is often hard to find (french fries don't count in calories). The dessert menu was super tempting, but we simply could not squeeze in one more morsel. I know where I'm headed the next time I'm in town. Next time, I'll ease up on the bread to enjoy the creme brulee.

We really enjoy meeting friends here for dinner in the wintertime! It's small, cozy, and the food is delightful. I could definitely see this as a romantic date night spot. I highly recommend the French Onion Soup. It's my favorite place to get it. However, split an order with someone so you have room for dinner and dessert! They really know their chicken coq au vin. That was another thing I've split here, and I wish I'd had it all to myself. They claim to have the best creme brulee in the city, and I can't speak to that as both times I've been here, there's been something else that catches my attention. This time it was the Opera Cake. Very nice! Our server was fantastic. Very attentive.

Had lunch with wifey today. Been meaning to eat here forever. Will have to come back for dinner for more thorough review. I had pork Sami and frittè with duck fat aioli. Very good indeed. Wifey had quiche, soup and salad. Quiche was quite good, soup a miss and salad was ok. Very good service. Nice ambiance. Bar looks well stocked (didn't drink as we are doing MKE tour today). Has the right vibe to return for dinner.

Great meal! Terrible bread. I know they were going after a rustic artisanal whole grain piece of country side goodness, but the result fell way short. The veal loaf was amazing and my girlfriends trout was gone before I had a chance to sample. The dandelion salad with basil was interesting. The yelp deal is a nice kick.

Cooking classes! Woo! For the big 3-0, my co-workers gave me a gift certificate for the cooking classes at Coquette. I think they want me to recreate the recipes and feed them. I would happily do so! First of all, the classes fill up fast, so if you get a gift certificate or just want a four course meal with wine/beer pairings, you have to act fast. I had a hard time making a decision on the class that I wanted, but I decided on the Brunch Class. The first class was so popular that they opened a second one on a Wednesday night! If you arrive after 5 p.m. there is free parking behind the building (on Jefferson). If you get there a bit early you get best pick of the seats and can pop over to the bar to enjoy a drink, but remember you are going to have four drinks over the course of your meal. Since I was on my own and because they have a mirror to reflect the demonstration that could be seen clearly from every part of the room, I chose the back corner. Want to know why I suggest this (or the end of the row near the wall)? Because the staff have trouble getting to the end with the drinks, so they just pass the bottle down. And maybe the two ladies next to me were just being nice, but had I not been driving, I would have had more than just four drinks! ::wink, wink:: Anyway, on the table they have the recipes, wine/beer/liquor ordering list, and a comments card. The chefs are funny and if you are there with friends you should play the "Layers of Flavor" drinking game. Or you could do it with every time they say "butter", your call, but have fun with it! The food was delicious! My favourite from the brunch menu was the Brioche French Toast with Carmelized Pears and Candied Pecans. OMG! I don't know if Mr. Snarky would have approved since he likes berries on his, but I need to find a loaf of Brioche, dark rum, and pears. The smell from the pears and the pecans was heavenly! My second favourite was the Bruchetta with a poached egg and Hollandaise Sauce. The recipe is super easy and very satisfying! The quiche was so creamy it was unreal. I don't think I have ever had quiche that creamy, usually it is still a bit spongy, but the chef did add another 3 egg yolks because the 6 eggs before weren't enough. And the crust was delicious! The crepes were my least favourite, mostly because I didn't think there were enough leeks and mushrooms inside. Too much ham! I will say that it was nice to see that chefs make mistakes some times and that sometimes it isn't as easy as everyone thinks. Besides two wines, they also served Bloody Marys and Mimosas. The Mimosa had a little extra liquor in it, so it was even more tasty... it was hard to only have a couple of sips, especially as there were still about two glasses worth left in the carafe. I saw the new list of classes and I would love to go to the one themed on Puerto Rico but it is already sold out! I will never be able to watch a cooking show on t.v. If you get the chance to go, take some friends... or better yet, go solo and meet some new friends ;)

Outstanding service and food! My mom and I came on a quiet Wednesday evening and were delighted with every course. We each had a glass of Côtes du Rhône, the field greens (which was simple and delicious) and shared the veal stroganoff (amazing and perfect to share!). We shared the creme brûlée for dessert and had the starry night after dinner drink. Everything was wonderful. I love the French flair. I will definitely be back!
