I stopped here for a delicious cranberry/orange scone today. It's an old fashioned bakery with a great selection of Italian cookies, cakes, and pastries. There's a deli too. Actually, I stumbled upon the Canfora Bakery while I was looking around the neighbourhood my Mother grew up in over 60 years ago. In fact the Church where Mom and Dad were married over 50 years ago (Unity Lutheran) is just across the street. Other places I looked at included her childhood home on South Taylor Avenue (including the service alley), the place Mom and Dad had their wedding reception on Oklahoma at Chase (now a Mexican restaurant), Humboldt Park, her old High School (Bay View, home of the Red Cats), the old drop forge plant where she worked during high school, and last but not least, a few old neighbourhood bars that my grandfather was known to frequent. One of those bars (not called the Hob Nob anymore) was where Mom and Dad stopped for a drink after the wedding, but before the reception! And during all this time, I was on the cell phone at several points with my Mom describing what I was seeing, listening to what she remembered (including family stories), and telling me where to go next. The neighbourhood had changed quite a bit in 60 years, but many things that Mom mentioned were still there and familiar in one form or another. We both know that you can never go back, but it's OK to take a look back every once and awhile and of course never forget where you are from.

This bakery reminds me of grandma picking up ham, rolls, and donuts after church. Miss those days. The line out the door and number system says this is the place to be. So good.

Nice selection with decent prices. There's a small area with outdoor seats.

I love a nice local Italian bakery! We have tons of great bakeries in Milwaukee but I think Canfora is underrated. Their bread, rolls, and Italian cookies are impressive. However, stop by for lunch and pick up a nice deli sandwich. They are made-to-order and are very inexpensive. On Sundays this place is INSANELY busy. The hot ham and roll specials draws so many people that they are standing outside the door. Try to avoid Sunday mornings if you don't want to wait.

I have been a long time customer here. (maybe 10 years or more) My daughter's have been picking the authentic Italian cookies out to bring home. Usually they don't make it past the car. I had arrived about 5 to 6 and they were still open. I was in the middle of choosing my pastries when one of the ladies alerted me to the fact they were closing in one minute. I explained I was in the middle of completing my order. I thought is was kind of rude. I am sure she was tired from being there all day but I am a customer just like everyone else. What was she going to do? Shut the light off next? Anyway, this place is the go to for ham on Sundays and we used to get our cakes here. Please don't think about going near closing. I ended up buying a loaf of bread that I was going to make into garlic bread and when I got home, my hubby had made garlic bread already. I did get some ham salad though for lunch.

A coworker's girlfriend brought me a "Persian" from here which is some sort of a doughnut/cinnamon roll thing (not Iranian, not a cat, not a rug, I have no idea what makes this pastry "Persian"), and she told me that this bakery makes the best doughnuts "ever." She explained that it's "National Doughnut Day." I tried to explain to her that it's actually the day to remember D-Day 1944 but she looked at me funny, so once again I'm reminded I'm over-the-hill. But whaddya know, the Persian was very good! I was intrigued, but I wasn't able to find a definitive history of "The Persian." Lehighton PA, and Thunder Bay Ontario both claim to be its hometown, but lots of Cheeseheads tell me it's a Wisconsin tradition. Turns out Canfora has lots of delicious baked goods. A bakery with addictive doughnuts, like I need this temptation nearby.

This is a donut review. They have a lot of other food that I have not tried and may be fantastic. I have been here around half a dozen times and have never been impressed with the donuts. I've had all sorts, cheese pockets, cake, raised, cruller, bear claw. None have been good, none have inedible but you can get a much better donut at Pick n Save or if you're feeling ambitious drive to Grebe's. The raised donuts lack that slightly crunchy outside, they're very one texture. The frosting is average in flavor and texture and is often applied too heavily (I know, sounds impossible.) I've never had a bear claw made out of raised donut dough before and I do not like it. I did have an onion roll one time and it was fantastic. The place is always busy so maybe I should try something else sometime because they must be doing something right, it just isn't donuts. As an aside, they have a minimum requirement on credit card orders so bring your cash.

I visited your bakery this morning, purchased one of your three meat sandwiches. It was so big it will last me for 3 meals. But then I am 89 years old. The pastries were delicious as was the sandwich.

I'm a somewhat recent resident of Bayview and I happened upon this bakery and decided to check it out. I was not disappointed! Not only do they have great bakery items, but they also have a great deli! My first time there I got a phenomenal sandwich as well as a few small salads to try over the next few days. They had a pesto pasta salad which I really enjoyed. There was also a tortellini salad which was great. Basically everything I've had there has been great. And their cheesecake is so creamy, ugh, gotta love it. Also, Christmas Eve I picked up a bunch of donuts to bring to my mom's for Christmas morning and everyone commented on how good the donuts were. Anyway, check it out. You won't regret it!

I love to stop in to get some Italian cookies! I used to work near a Sendik's that sold their cookies and now that I realize they are not too far from my house so I like to stop in once in a while to pick a few treats out of their big glass case. Their cookies are light, not too sweet and little so you don't feel like a big pig when getting a bunch! My only reason for not giving 5 stars is they usually aren't the friendliest in there or maybe they don't have the patience for me deciding on my cookies (it's a tough decision because I want them all)...! They also sell other pastries and breads but I can't get past those cookies....!

My husband RAVES about the ham & rolls on Sunday. I agree the doughnuts are good. Owner Rose is an awesome lady makes you understand ITALIAN in the bakery.

I stopped in there on 1-15-11, to pick up some items for the Packer game. I got a Packer cake, among other things. All of the items were very good. I recommend giving them a try.

The Italian cookies are the best I have found in Milwaukee. The bread is great as well. The danish and some of the donuts were not as good as I hoped. Definitely a great place to get your ham and rolls on Sunday.

Recently discovered this place. Had to bring some "sweets" into work. What a hit the donuts made. They also have a deli and the famous Sunday buy lb of ham and get the rolls.

I go out of my way to stop by this bakery, based on several good experiences. I bought Italian cookies for my work colleagues for a special occasion, and they were a hit. I brought a Canfora pineapple-upside down cake to a Halloween potluck where the dessert table was crowded with pastries. It initially seemed a little out of place, but then it turned out to be the most popular dessert. Apparently, they are doing something right!

It's national donut day, so of course I'm honoring the glorious donut holiday. Chocolate glazed donut still tasted good at 5pm. I'll be back next year!

The bakery items themselves are not all that great but the cakes you can order are to die for! They are expensive but worth every penny. If you ever order a cake from there be sure to get the cake with white chocolate shavings on the side.

Delicious donuts. I like the chocolate long john, reminds me of my childhood. The double crunch rolls are yummy too. I'm not a fan of their "baguettes", too fluffy.

I'm all for new trends and the latest pastry craze, but sometimes simple is best. Canfora does simple, and they do it really well. The donuts are made in house, fresh every morning. These donuts are the basics. Ya got your cruller's, your cake donuts, your apple fritters...nothing topped with bacon or cereal here. The breads smell amazing too and I've heard great things about their cake too! (They had pumpkin cake slices when I stopped by this morning!) Canfora is super busy on the weekends packed full of neighborhood locals. Make sure to grab a number and bring your patience! Donuts run out early, so come with an open mind and many choices. What I really love is they are open at 530 am Tuesday through Friday. Since most shops don't open till 7 or later, I appreciate having somewhere I can stop and grab a bite before I have to be to work before the sun even comes up! Canfora is a great neighborhood bakery and I hope they continue to thrive in this ever changing world! Great value, great food, and real nice people, what more could you ask for?

I also enjoy coming here on occasion because hey have a large selection of baked goods. They even have a small deli section with salads and meats. Definitely come here on Sundays for heir hot ham & rolls. Word of advice though, get there early because it can get quite crowded.

I came in here to get a sandwich. The lady behind the counter made it perfectly clear that she didn't really feel like making me one. So I left.

So, I feel kind of bad that this is a really popular bakery in Milwaukee... but I wanted it to be so much more than something right out of 1940. In Chicago, I'm used to new and unique twists on baked goods, not just a standard canoli. Canfora Rosa didn't live up to other Yelp reviews in that it only serves sub-par, mediocre baked goods. This place was incredibly busy on a Sunday morning, so I guess that speaks volumes in terms of how much locals love the place, but I didn't need a whole cake and I certainly didn't want to buy a bunch of baguettes. The donut selection was sub-par, at best, and the rest of the pastries had been picked through by 9 a.m., which is pretty bonkers. I'd say this place isn't worth the visit, especially if you're expecting a larger selection, friendlier service, and better pastries. Everything tasted just like something any old diner would make, so I'm not sure what the appeal is.

Went here recently for a birthday cake. Had a great experience, staff was friendly and helped me with all the cake options. The cake ended up being perfect, everyone loved it. Vanilla cake with a layer of strawberries in the middle. While I was there I could'nt help but to buy some other treats. They make some really good pizza on Saturday mornings and the donuts are awesome.

Love the rolls here! So busy on a Saturday and Sunday morning! And just fyi - in answer to a post above by Mike; Canfora is the owners last name. :)

Great bakery that I have walked/rode/drove past probably one thousand times in my life and never stopped in. Glad I finally stopped in after someone had recommended their donuts. It was probably the fancy pants wedding cakes in their window that kept me away. I walked in to a wonderland of pastries, cookies and other goodies. Upon inspection, I found they had 4 different flavors of "bear claws", and I went with the only thing that can be considered a bear claw, the classic almond paste filled pastry. The pastry was buttery and flaky. The almond paste was subtle but sweet. This is my new spot for bear claws. Absolutely perfect. They also serve New York style cheesecake here, but after a recent visit I was disappointed to find out that it was from nearby Suzy's Cheesecake. That's not saying Suzy's makes a bad cheesecake (about 3 out of 5 stars IMO), but since Suzy's is available in many grocery stores it's not worth the trip for the cheesecake alone. The service is friendly in here, but don't expect to get out of here fast. This is a popular bakery on a busy street that attracts a bunch of customers who start to order without knowing what they want. Don't expect to be in and out grabbing a coffee and a donut before work. Great bakery. Definitely worth a visit.

Simply put, the best donuts, pastries and hot ham and rolls in the city. It's always super packed on a Sunday morning, and with good reason. I'm actually devouring a Persian donut while I type this. We even had Canfora make our wedding cake seven years ago, and people are still talking about how good it was.

WHY PUT INFERIOR POTATO SALAD IN YOUR STOMACH? The potato salad at Canfora Bakery is simply the best. I found Canfora driving by and seeing a sign about ham and rolls on a sandwich board (very fitting). GREAT: the house made potato salad - mustard style - amazingly good GOOD: A pound of ham and six homemade rolls for under seven dollars. This deal was made for a picnic. (My girl and I took our purchases to nearby Bayview Park on a sunny Sunday.) SO-SO: Purchased a sampler of three different pastries, very sweet - like over the top rich What's "Canfora": An agent derived from a cinnamon tree that's used to relieve pain and itching. Not sure if this is what the bakery is named after. **Unchain and Support Local Businesses**

Best donuts around. Great service. Delicious Ham and rolls on Sunday. I go here once a week to get the family some breakfast treats, way better than Dunkin donuts and Pick N' Save.

A great, small bakery with a deli and lunch specials. The deli sandwiches are really good and the portions are large. The three meat sandwich is my favorite. They don't skimp on the meat and you get a sandwich and chips for $4.50. The make terrific breads and great pastries. The prices are very affordable for all the bakery items. The girls that work the counters are very friendly. I wish they had a few tables to eat your sandwich but it's still a great spot for lunch.

I've had great Ham and Rolls, pastries and cookies from this place. After reading some of the reviews here on Yelp, I can't wait to go back and try some of the other recommendations.

Love their sunday hot ham and rolls. They helped us on short notice with a birthday cake which was delicious! Not too sweet like other places. Love their donuts, even if they are on the no-no list right now. Cookies are delish as well. Love the outdoor seating in the summer.

This place is great for Sunday hot ham and rolls. The seasme rolls with the sweet ham is delicious. You buy a pound of ham, get 6 rolls for free. Remember to grab a number on Sunday's. Donuts are delicious and go fast on Sunday mornings. The homemade pepperoni sticks are so good I could eat them like beef jerky.

I have visited Canfora at least 20 times. Luckily I work down the street and so it is my "go-to" for the days I have errands to run and need to pick up a bite for lunch. Not one time have I been disappointed! The ham spread MUST be tried out from everyone. I know to some it may look not to appealing, but is id to DIE FOR. Also, they will make deli sammies to order and use the BEST ham, Badger Ham. Italian cookies, fresh sammies, pastrys, and supporting a local business.... count this Southsider in!!
