At first this was just a recommended spot around the office, but from the moment I walked in it was love at first sight. Then I looked at the menu, it was love at first sight again, the first item on the menu and my mind was made up. Door county chicken salad sandwich with door county cherries, walnuts, craisins and chicken salad on whole grain bread, served with dark green salad and green apples with a light balsamic dressing. The first bite it was love, again. Top that off with awesome friendly service, dining along the river and great prices and you have my new favorite lunch spot in the city. Cafe Dulce, you have yourself a new regular customer, also I love you guys. Xoxo see you soon, Chelsie

No. Just no. I worked in the building, so ate here at least 15 times over the years. I started out really liking it. It was relatively inexpensive for food that wasn't burgers or fries or other quick lunch options. Here's where they fail: zero consistency. None whatsoever. There's two or three guys who are always working (I assume at least one is an owner). You'd think the one guy that takes all the orders would know the menu, right? Wrong. I would order a sandwich by name, and he'd always look at me like I had a second head. I'd eventually just have to tell him "I want cold tuna salad on ciabatta" instead of whatever random name they gave their sandwiches. What's the point of having a menu then?? I'd also order something once, then the next time I'd order it, it was completely different. Not so different that they gave me the wrong thing, but different like, now this pasta has all this balsamic drizzled heavily over it, before it had none. Or why is this quesadilla filled with carrots when it had none last time?? Why is the bacon in a pasta dish served in whole strips on top of the pasta? Really, I was always just confused when I ate here. Even the soups were completely different from time to time when they were supposedly the same soup. I really don't know how they did it. And back to the three guys that work there... I went there once by myself (other times had always been with a guy I worked with), and between the guys working at the time, I was called "honey" and "sweetie" no less than 4 times while I got a takeout order. They went out of their way to call me pet names, yet they had never done that before, when I was there with a man. I don't mind a diner-style "honey" thrown around now and again, but this was weird and excessive. GROSS.

Friendly service where they know your name! A great place for brekkie and for lunch. Serves soup in the winter time and year round organic salads. Chef James can modify your food to your liking or you can create your own sandwich with your touch of flair. The prices are reasonable and the food is phenomenal! If the service were any faster they'd be Jimmy John's!

Dulce is a hidden lunch spot worth checking out. They offer very well priced meals and good quality. Great value for your dollar. They have outside seating right by the river which is great for summer days. The atmosphere is casual but many professionals from offices near by stop in for lunch. Great salads, paninis, and pastas.

The people are totally what makes this adorable cafe worthwhile. Not only is the food phenomenal but the owner remembers your name and treats you like family. The sandwiches come with an amazingly fresh salad, but you may want to ask for some additional dressing as a drizzle of oil isn't always enough.

That damn Dunkin Donuts put them out of business. They are now closed at Chase Tower. I hear they will keep a catering business in a new location. Humbug!

Pay no attention to the frivolous 1 star reviews. I can't imagine shooting down a place due to one mistake. Even the best places have their off days. It's the nature of the beast. Crapping on someone for something like that seems a bit dramatic. Now on to my experience. Cafe Dulce is on the Riverwalk right behind Capriotti's. Meaning this is right off Michigan Ave. Parking will be limited to street so keep that in mind when traveling. Susan would be correct. The staff is exceptionally friendly. You'll notice that there is moderate seating inside as well as a table I noted right outside the door. It's not overly fancy in terms of decor but why should it be? It's done up nice. If you look at their menu you'll note a host of sandwiches salads, burritos and even a couple of burgers. They did a good job mixing it up by offering some unique options. BBQ Thai burrito? Not sure what that's about but i'll probably try it. For me it was the Italian Panini. I ordered it without really knowing what was on it. I want to add that the ham is a thick slice (see picture) which was a surprise. Typically sandwich joints tend to go easy on the thin slice. The Italian was Sopressata salami + ham + roasted red peppers + roma tomato + provolone cheese + balsamic vinaigrette. It works wonderfully. The size of the sandwich is nice especially considering that this was around $5. For me it's the perfect lunch size. The ingredients were fresh and it's nice to know that they use local vendors. I noted that the guy taking the orders seems to know people by name and is rather friendly, prompt and professional. The guys in the kitchen worked rather efficiently and my wait was minimal. It was one of the faster sandwich experiences. Plus this is pretty cheap eats in my book. That's always a plus I'll no doubt be back. There are a couple of options that sounded good and I'll update accordingly. From my experience I would sooner choose this than Capriotti's (right on the other side). For a quick sandwich downtown this seems to be a nice spot. I believe the food is better than average for sandwiches and the customer service is exceptional albeit a brief experience from a "to go" perspective. I'll weigh in another time should I be served by the staff.

Perhaps you know the saying about "good, fast and cheap" and never being able to get all three at the same time. Café Dulce blows this theory out of the water by delivering tasty food at inexpensive prices and an incredibly quick speed. This place focuses on sandwiches, panini, wraps, and salads, but you can also get breakfast, burritos & quesadillas and even a great burger. Their sandwiches ($6) come on crusty French bread with a large tossed salad made of a variety of greens, julienned Grannysmith apples, craisins and a balsamic vinaigrette. Yum! Today I had the Tuscan Tuna sandwich, which included bold pesto and herbs, and I regularly enjoy their apple and brie sandwich as well as their turkey club. I was introduced to Café Dulce by a friend that works downtown. Since I'm now working downtown, I eat there on average 2 times per week. The staff are super friendly and do an excellent job of helping me figure out what I should order, as well as making me feel like a special and a valued customer. The only negatives I have are about the dining room itself -- it could use a little sprucing up. I do look forward to being able to sit outside along the riverfront, if the city will ever get its act together and get a missing lamp post installed.

I work in the CHASE building and I really enjoy supporting small businesses. So much so - I'll give a small business with mediocre service or products the benefit of the doubt by coming back a few times; and the convenience factor, with Dulche being located on the ground floor of this building, makes it difficult to pass by if you are looking for a quick cup of coffee or a bowl of soup. But to gain my long term patronage Cafe Dulce really needs to (forgive the pun) step up to the plate. They are so inconsistent with the quality, presentation and preparation of the food that a visit to them is very much like a game of Russian roulette. Often I've come in to order something on the menu - only to be told that they are out. I have purchased salad and pasta dishes that are barely passable as restaurant fare, with wilted, old veggies drowned in balsamic or burnt cheese hiding mushy pasta. Most recently I purchased an ice chi that tasted like they stored the chi tea in the bottom of an old gym shoe and at $3.75 it was so disappointing, and I doubt I'll be coming back in for quite sometime. The best thing about Dulce is hands down, the staff and owner of the establishment. They are always friendly and upbeat - they say hello to me by name. But if they cannot get their act together on the food, well- friendly, just isn't enough.

I have had some great lunches here. Their mushroom gorgonzola pasta is one of the best dishes downtown. I've also had some not-so-great lunches here (I didn't love their bean burrito), but you can't beat the prices, and the staff is incredibly friendly. It's literally behind Capriotti's on the water, and if you can find it, it's worth a shot.

My coworker challenged me to give Dulce another shot. So I did. I went in on two separate visits, ordered two separate sandwiches and am ready to update my review. My 3 stars are given for Location, Convenience and Staff. Dulce still scores points for location. The staff does a good job with accommodating the lunch rush. I see more people working here lately, so that is a good sign. Staff is busy yet happy. The owner/chef is busy/quirky/happy/friendly most days. I wished and hoped that something about this last experience would lead me to a 5 star rating. Its taken me awhile to really figure out why I can't love Dulce, but I now know what it is. **The menu is all over the place** There is a lengthy breakfast menu, but the lunch menu is even bigger. Daily soup, salad, combo, pasta, and "Cucina Mex" (quirky, but ok you wanna be trendy I guess). Offering a variety of things can make you more appealing to a larger patron base; however, there is TOO much going on here. I think if the menu was pared back slightly there would be a great story to tell. (Keep it to cafe stuff - paninis, salads, soups - drop your burgers, pasta and 'Mexican" food). If I order a chicken salad sandwich "with door county cranberries" that comes with tomato, greens, etc - I would hope that is what I get. I was mistaken at my last visit; there was apple on my sandwich, no tomato and bagged crasins in my chicken salad. I know this sounds petty; however, its a common occurrence here and if Dulce wants to step up to stay in the game they should at least think about what patrons are saying with regards to this. Its not like they have a rotating kitchen staff. Modifications to the specified menu which are a surprise to the patron are never good. If you are out of something or need to substitute, tell me before I order. I additionally tried the tuna melt; it was pretty good. The tuna was seasoned nicely, and served panini style on sourdough, the portion of tuna to bread could have been a little better (since the bread was so big), but giving 1/2 tomato slice on each side is skimpin' it. Prices have increased slightly over the last year. I get it, times change and costs go up. But please, don't go chintzy on your customers. Eating re-bagged chips that you've re-branded as your own is a big turn off. They look bad on that display shelf. Getting a sandwich with skimpy portions and paying an arm and a leg on top of it is disappointing. Tweak your menu a little and restore the shine that Dulce once was. Otherwise, you need to realize there are other competitors in this area that are going to overshadow your presence downtown, river walk location or not. Read the other yelp reviews, clearly I am not alone in my thinking on this place.

I walked in after 1 on a Thursday afternoon so there was no line, just two people eating in the cafe and yet it took a while for someone to take my order. I ordered the Reuben panini. It was the very first item on the panini menu board. The description on the menu board said corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, 1,000 island dressing on rye. I got my sandwich and walked back to my office, opened it up to find corned beef on white with lettuce drowning in 1,000 island dressing. No rye bread. No Swiss cheese. No sauerkraut. Lettuce? Really? Now I could be more forgiving if it was noon and it was busy but I WAS THE ONLY ONE THERE - no pressure at all in getting it right. Shouldn't have been mixed up with any OTHER orders. You guys suck and I am not walking all the way back to get it fixed.

Both myself and co-workers have supported this cafe since it's opening - but after the treatment I received today that will no longer be the case - and department lunches will not be held there. I went in before the noon "rush" and ordered my usual - Walnut and Goat Cheese salad with the addition of chicken. When I got back to my office (about a ten minute walk and I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant) I noticed that all my salad consisted of all spring mix, 4 very small strips of chicken (I mean small), pine nuts (which I hate) instead of walnuts, and two tiny pieces of goat cheese. I had a meeting in 20 minutes, but wanted to call and express my concern and disappointment as a regular customer. I was already planning on running to a closer place to eat for lunch, as there was no way I could make it through the afternoon on what was given to me. The attitude and rudeness coming from the person who answered ("Dave") was what really made me mad. His explanation was that "they were busy so things get skipped" . REALLY? First off, I came before the rush, second of all that is NO excuse. He stated it so matter of fact and that I should just deal with it. I said that was a poor resolution to give to a customer. Then he stated that I could walk back over with the salad and they will fix it, but that's all he was going to do in an attitude like he's doing me a favor. I stated no thanks I had a meeting shortly and at 8 1/2 months pregnant I couldn't make it back. He pretty much said that was my problem and when I asked if he was an owner and his name, he said "Dave" and that he wasn't an owner then hung up on me. I waited a couple hours after the lunch time to call and speak to one of the owners, the person taking the message said he was busy (even though I could hear him talking to the owner) and wanted to know exactly why I was calling. Well I was calling to let them know my poor experience, the rudeness from "Dave" before I wrote a review (giving them the benefit of the doubt and keeping my business as well), but obviously that wasn't important to them as the owner never bothered to call me back. Stay away! With so many options to eat downtown, go to a small business that takes pride in the food they serve, and treats customers as guests.

Healthy fresh food for breakfast or lunch. Cheap prices. The staff is very friendly. I'm hesitant posting about this place. It's a little gen hidden in downtown Milwaukee... but gotta share the wealth, I love this place!

Let me start off by saying, I have worked in the Chase building for 4 years so I have ate at Cafe Dulce dozens of times because it is convinient for me since it is in the same building. HOWEVER, if you were someone who did eat her 3-5 times a week you would be as disappointed as I am. At first everything was great, was even a regular, but them the mistakes started, the prices increased, and the quality and quantity of the food dimished. I got quite tired of going in there thinking " this time they will get it right, or this time I wont be disappointed" and then sadly I was. And it was happening way too often. For example, I would order a bowl of soup and there would be four small peices of chicken in it? Or I would order my regular item and suddenly they made changes to it without changing it on the menu or telling me? I have gotten bakery here that has had mold in it from sitting out too long, and brownies that taste like plastic from the plastic wrap they were wrapped in and old. One time ordered a chicken breast, it was great and perfect, the next time I ordered it it was half the size and dried out and over cooked? So to the people that say to ignore the one star comments please do not because those incidents are very common at this place on a daily basis. And to the the girl that says you should sit down and eat cause you get more food than what they put in the to-go containers?? Really??? It should be the same amount of food. But the cook/owner knows that for plating he has to make it look amazing and large because that is what everyone sees walking by, duh! This place has actually lost alot of customers over the years because of the inconsistencies in their food prep and the ridiculous prices, Because the quality is not what it used to be whatsoever. I really beleive the only reason they are still in business is because of their location and that is it. And for how long it has been opened they still have stuff on the menu board they dont even use or make, and there is dust piling up on the lights and the walls. YUCK. Owner doesnt care anymore is what it seems like. **Also, most of the bad reviews if you noticed are coming from people that work in this building! What does that tell you!

Cafe Dulce is hard to find, even if you work downtown, but it's worth the effort. The owner's work behind the counter and are enthusiastic about their food. They serve the best sandwiches in Downtown Milwaukee and their Mediterranean Tuna Melt Panini (with olive tapenade and roasted red peppers) is one of my all-time favorite sandwiches (although it is a lot to finish at one sitting). Lack of ambiance is the only reason they 4 instead of 5 stars.
