I'm told that the Black Kettle was once a great restaurant. It is no longer. At 6:00 on a Friday evening, six of us called the restaurant to make reservations for that evening. We were expecting few seating options, given the day and time. We got our first choice - 6:30 - and we're told that we didn't have to leave our name because they'd "figure out" who we were. No doubt. When we arrived, we were the only people in the entire restaurant. Bad sign. We were seated immediately by a very friendly host and promptly given menus and asked if we wanted to order any cocktails. Great start. I wanted a steak, and when I scoured the menu there were a number of choices. Strangely though, every steak on the menu was listed as being served with mushrooms or blue cheese (or both) or peppercorns. Bad sign. A good steak restaurant takes pride in its cuts of beef by offering them naked; toppings generally aren't standard, but one usually may add toppings if one is in the mood. The salads for the six of us were good, the dark rye loaf of bread was tasty and warm, the potatoes (baked and garlic mashed) were good. My NY Strip was shoe leather. More than over done, dry, tasteless. Terrible. Just terrible. My five counterparts had varying opinions of their entrees. One got the filet, and it was tender. The flavor, however, came from the sauce. Two got the barbeque ribs and fried shrimp. The guy liked them, the gal thought they were ... eh ... ok. And two got the prime rib. They liked it a lot. The service was prompt, attentive and friendly. Kudos for that. The prime ribbers may go back. I won't.

Growing up in Menomonee Falls over 50 years ago, this restaurant was one of our favorites. After moving to Texas, we ways make a point of coming back to this place. We love the onion rings (still called a mountain). Three out of four of us ordered the steak sandwich and we were allowed to substitute a salad for the cole slaw and chips. The salad was big and healthy with fresh crisp lettuce. Our steak sandwiches came just as ordered and the blue cheese chicken pasta was superb. A BIG fault was the timing of the onion rings we asked for them with our meal and they came out when we were almost half done eating. But they were delicious the portions were large and we left with a bag to go. The restaurant went beyond expectations when they brought out a piece of cheesecake for my mother-in-law's 90th birthday. I would have rated it a 5 except for the mentioned timing on the onion rings and the too cold temperature of the dining room. (it was 23 degrees outside and snowing but I had hoped for the inside to be warmer. I was cold during the whole meal.

This place was fantastic! I'm in from out of state for work and wanted a nice sit-down dinner and this fit the bill. The price was extremely reasonable and the cut of prime rib was to die for. The ambiance was quaint but good and the service was really good as well. The started bread was quite obviously homemade and super delicious!

Great place to have dinner and a meeting, or at least a conversation, and not feel rushed or pressured. I scored it lower because the food was just, well, OK. Nothing great and not very flavorful. The vegitable rice side was bland and tasted institutional. I had the tilapia special and didn't eat it all because it too was bland tasting. The green tea I had smelled like fish. Ick. Seems like a local place and I love supporting the local place, but I won't plan on going specific for the food. Would still go for the atmosphere .

I guess the only thing they achieved was reaching an all time low for restaurants. Black Kettle is close to my office so when I had dealers in town and had to grab a quick lunch, I decided to go here. Yeah, it looks like an older place but how bad can it be, I thought. They proved to me there is always room to do worse. The interior hasn't been updated in 30 years. We were the only diners in the entire place but every table had a basket of chips and muffins on them. Like the baskets had been waiting a long time for diners that never arrived. I passed on the serving of cole slaw that all of us received. I choose the southwest chicken wrap that had a description of "chilled chicken with a spicy sauce" and tomatoes in a tortilla. Well, the chilled chicken had ice crystals on it so I think they went beyond chilled. And I have no idea what the southwest sauce was but it was watery and simply gross. Bad decor. Weird atmosphere and the worst food I've ever tasted. Tear this place down and put up a CVS or something. The world would be a better place.

I came here for dinner on a Wednesday evening. There were hardly any dining patrons. Maybe one or two other tables besides our party, plus about four or five people hanging out at the bar that look like regulars. While the appearance and ambience of the restaurant does feel nice, warm, and cozy, the food leaves much to be desired. The menu selections are decent, and they have a variety of items such as seafood, appetizer dishes, and steak or chops. They also have all you can eat ribs (or combo) specials that are pretty good if you just want quantity over quality. The descriptions on the menu would actually appeal to foodie-type patrons with dishes such as - Water Chestnuts wrapped in Bacon, Escargot, Cajun Haddock, Lake Perch, and Bleu Tenderloin. Our hostess was also very nice and accomodating. However, the food is lacking in finesse... I ordered the Fried Shrimp dish, which came over-fried, which meant that the batter was hard and too oily, and the shrimp was over-cooked. It came with a rice pilaf that smelled like it was cooked on a non-stick pan and that the non-stick had come off the pan into the rice. Just foul. I tried to chalk it down to my nose playing tricks on me, but the taste of the rice was just so bad I couldn't eat it.

Some restaurants should be patronized every day but Friday, others may have a great fish fry, but stink at everything else. Since I've only gone on Friday, my comments are strictly for the fish fry. The small loaf of bread was warm and tasty. And the fish came so quickly, we only had one piece of it. Speaking of the fish.. Nice crunchy coating, but soggy fish inside. Maybe not the worst tartar sauce, but pretty close. French fries and cole slaw were very good. I found it interesting that they also had a prime rib special, along with spare ribs and shrimp. Pretty unusual for a Friday night. I wish I tried one of those, instead.

RIGHT PLACE, WRONG PERSON I've been to the Black Kettle a few times, and have enjoyed the food each and every visit. The thing that kind of sticks in my mind is the one time I took a date there, and the problem wasn't the restaurant...it was the date! Horrible, boring, egotistical, obnoxious, caustic, bitter drone. So, I just would ask them something about themselves and they would blabber on and on and friggin' on about nothing interesting. But it gave me ample time to enjoy the bread basket in peace while I nodded my head and completely tuned the idiot out. The bread was damn good, too. Warm and flakey. And the butter was served in an actual stainless steel ramekin--not some nursing home plastic applesauce cup. I wish restaurants would realize the importance of presentation. Black Kettle gets it. The steaks I've eaten here have been done to perfection, as well as the baked potato. I've tried their cheese fondue appetizer that someone else ordered during one of my trips here. It was something I would never have ordered on my own, but I did sample it. And it had a lot of flavor, without being laced with an overabundance of salt. The very traditional nothing-fancy salad was nice as well, and the dressing was home made, not that Kraft soybean oil and high fructose crap. The desserts looked very good, and people that I've been with have enjoyed them very much. I opted out of dessert each time I've been there, just so I don't end up with a huge Wisconsonite dutch oven butt and a stomach that looks like an accordion. The atmosphere is unique. It is formal, but not stuffy. I was dressed up when I've visited, but you could dress down and not feel uncomfortable at Black Kettle. I wish I could be more helpful in describing the atmosphere, but rest assured you will not feel out of place regardless of your attire. It's very down-to-earth.The staff is very nice, attentive, and make you feel welcome. What I remember of the decor is that it is very dark and there are these swags of red velvet curtains surrounding the door frames. I know this because when I took the above mentioned date from hell here a number of years ago, I remember thinking how I'd like to tear off one of the curtain panels and strangle the fool just to get them to stop obnoxiously insulting our waitress (who, by the way, was nothing but pleasant the entire time). If you go with a group, as I have in the past, you will find that Black Kettle's waitstaff is very attentive and accommodating. The offer daily specials that are good values. You will find traditional steakhouse slash supper club fare here. The prices are moderate compared to other similar restaurants. Expect to pay $25 for an entree. There is a separate bar area if you decide to just meet friends for drinks. All in all, I've never had a bad experience at Black Kettle--at least that had anything to do with the restaurant!

Very inconsistent food. Sometimes good, a few time so bad I would not eat it.
