The whole clan 8 of us decided to go for pie as an end to vacation. I am glad we went as they have good pie. They have about 30 types, not all available at all times, but we all had something good. My wife didn't like hers but she likes gross, artery choking pies laden with chocolate an peanut butter( that one is reportedly not good, oh well) They have an OK cup of coffee. The service is pretty friendly and acceptable. The atmosphere is diner, Americana(like everything else local) I might rate them higher later, it's just that all we had was pie, so it's hard to give a meaningful rating.

Most important-- THAT PIE was to DIE FOR. I had a Reuben for dinner which was pretty good. Everyone in my groups dinners were big and proportionate. The restaurant itself is a cute little Norwegian throwback diner- nice spot for an affordable meal and AWESOME PIE. Service was so-so, but not terrible. Young waitstaff working at a diner.. If you're in Hayward- you definitely want to try this place at least once. Did I mention the pie was to die?

The exterior and interior has a strong "dated diner" feel to it. It was fairly busy at a weekday morning, which we took to be a good sign. In spite of the slow service (as is typical for the area), the food arrived hot and tasty! There was a great mix of classic and Norwegian dishes. Our family went with the traditional route and were not disappointed. Everything we ordered tasted great, and the muffins in particular were fantastic. On our way out we decided to buy one of their many pie offerings, which look great and are fairly priced.

Been going to Hayward a long time and decided to try Norske Nook for breakfast for the first time. Food was great, service was good and friendly. Only issue was it took about a half hour to get our meal. We will be back.

Stopped in here for pie after lunch at Famous Dave's....not as many pie options available as I would have liked, but enough for our group. Hubby and I shared a piece of peanut butter pie. Good, but really sweet. Wish they would have had slices of peach available.

I found this restaurant on yelp. I was looking for a restaurant for lunch while driving from Eau Claire, WI to Ashland, WI. It served it's purpose. My husband and I ordered hamburgers. The restaurant was fine but nothing special.

My hubby and I have come here twice for lunch and dessert. The food was alright, but nothing exceptional. I had roast turkey over bread with mashed potatoes and gravy. The turkey was extremely salty and tasted like it came from a can. It also had the texture of canned chicken and canned turkey. For a restaurant that prides itself on home cooking, this was very disappointing. My hubby had a wrap sandwich and said it was alright but nothing to rave about. Now the PIE is a completely different story! The pie is exceptionally sinful! At over $5 a slice it is absolutely worth the indulgence. My recommendation is to get lunch elsewhere and come here for dessert!

On vacation we were up for some treats, and pie qualifies, and after seeing the list of possibilities online, we headed in. A truck rolled up to the door as we were walking in and a lady hopped out and followed us in. The first sign that greeted us said "please wait to be seated" so we got in line behind a lady buying some pie. The lady behind us piped up and said she was picking up a pie, so I glanced into the case at the selections, but there was no identifying information as to which pies they were. When we got acknowledged we were told to sit anywhere we like and were given the pie list placemat. When our waitress returned, she asked which pie I wanted. My choice, raspberry while chocolate sour cream pie, which was my first choice due to the white chocolate and the blue ribbon logo, was not available. The waitress informed me that they have over 45 pies and not all are available each day and that it would be best to come up to the case to look. I had looked earlier, but since they weren't marked I wasn't sure what they were. I went back up and questioned a couple of slices, then picked one. While waiting, I noticed that the decor was country diner, and the dining room was tidy. I ended up with the raspberry sour cream pie, which I enjoyed more than I expected to. The filling reminded me a bit of the Jello layer salad my mom makes, and the crust is homemade and was delicious. They offer the pie shells for sale to take home and make your own. Mr. R had the butterscotch pie which I tried and the filling for that reminded me of maple fudge. Yum! If they had a board where they could indicate which pies were available, that would be great, but we had good pie so overall the visit was A-OK.

What don't they do well? I had my 1st norske burger. It ended up being the best burger i've had in a while. A bacon cheeseburger medium-rare, Perfect. They're food is good every time. The rasberry sour cream pie was crazy good.

The food was good but the service was insanely slow. The banana cream pie was fantastic!

I've been in Hayward for 4 days and have had breakfast at the Norske Nook 3 days in a row: Top 3 chicken fried steaks I've ever had; the breakfast sampler (basically standard breakfast: eggs, meat of choice, potato of choice, bread of choice) was as close to perfect as I've had (asked for extra crisp bacon but they were still a little flaccid, hence 4 and not 5 stars), homemade waffle with lingonberry topping was outstanding, and a side of extra crisp bacon (once again, a little flaccid). If not for the lack of crispier bacon I would've given this place 5 stars. It's still an awesome breakfast joint, but if you like your bacon crisp you might have to emphasize how crisp you want it.

If you read through my reviews, you will see that we frequent the Norske Nook in all locations, and the one in Hayward is no exception. First: Pie. I don't care what you eat or how full you are, get some pie. At least get it to go. If you have to choose between entree and pie, get pie. My personal favorites of course are the chocolate varieties, but you really can't go too wrong. Second: Food. Being a breakfast lover and lover of good hearty food, this is a great place for me. I always always get the ultimate potato pancake. It's a giant, plate-sized potato pancake with two strips of bacon and two eggs cooked to your specifications on top, then the whole thing is drenched in hollandaise sauce. Not low-cal, but uber yummy! My husband likes the wraps, and the soups are homemade and delicious. The hot pork and beef are also really outstanding. As for this particular location, I will say that it tends to be busy and could be about twice as big. The last several times we've gone the pie selection has been disappointing. It's tough when you only get to Norske once or twice a year and they are out of your favorite pie when you do go. We are lucky that we now live closer than we used to and therefore get to Norske more often. But my relatives were really disappointed on this last visit when several of their favorites were out... I don't know if it's because this Norske is just really popular or people in Hayward really like pie, but I wish they would make more of each variety knowing that they often sell out. I guess it's a cost-benefit thing but it really is disappointing sometimes and has been consistently so on our last several visits to this location.

We visited twice during our vacation. The server was very attentive and offered some good breakfast suggestions. The lunch and breakfast was hot and delicious. I expected the portion sizes to be a bit larger, but the food was first rate. As for the pie, it was outstanding. The fresh raspberry pie was cut fresh and the slice was huge. Just delicious. We also had a chocolate cream pie that was awesome. One down side was when we had the raspberry pie on our second visit. The raspberry slice had been sitting around a bit. The crust was so soggy and the whipped cream had hardened because it wasn't covered with plastic wrap. Next time we will just make sure to be a bit more selective on what we order after looking in the case. Overall a great experience.

Based on reviews here, we decided to Che ck it out for breakfast. Busy, but we got right in and seated. Things went downhill from there. Half of our group got water, then we didn't see the waitress for close to 30 minutes. She was there, but not taking care of us. Finally another person saw that we were not getting waited on and told her to do her job. We finally got coffee and our orders placed. The food was good, but nothing real special. Also we were not the only ones not getting served. They must have short of staff. Sunday morning and not having enough staff? Not very good. They did comp us pie for the problem without us having to say anything. So that was nice, but doesn't excuse the facts.

Pie = 5/5. Wow! Eat your pie first, then decide if you have enough room for a meal (the pie is that good, worth blowing a no sugar healthy eating lifestyle). The kids said the pancakes were the best they've ever had. Our sandwiches were good, but nothing exceptional. Eat at the Norske Nook, you won't be disappointed (unless you're an uptight sugar abstainer who can't let go for a day...)

My review is also based on just one visit at breakfast. The national champ pie thing is apparently for real, but being early, I opted for a carrot bran muffin - best I've ever had BY FAR. Unfortunately they didn't open the next day (Sunday) till 8am - too late for our fishing schedule. Luckily I purchased extra muffins Saturday morning. The cranberry was every bit as excellent as the bran. Can't wait to try this place again. They ship!

Great specialty items like Norwegian pancakes and Lefse wraps. The peach pie is to die for!

I've ended up eating here about a dozen times, all for breakfast. Each time I've had the Norwegian pancakes, and eggs sunny side up or over easy. Every time, it's delicious! Read my previous review for a more in-depth description of the Norwegian pancakes.

Great place to stop for breakfast. Reasonable prices and some interesting Swedish items. The jam/jelly is fantastic.

Great for breakfast, lingonberry pancakes. The northwoods lefse wrap (fish) is good, but often the pork is very fatty. Give it a trim! Waitstaff almost always very personable.

I have to be honest, Norwegian food doesn't really get me excited. But, if you ever wind up in Hayward, WI (on purpose or otherwise), there is a great little Norwegian dinner you should visit. From the moment you walk into Norske Nook, you will feel like you have been instantly transported to Oslo -- well maybe not, but you definitely realize that you're in a Norwegian diner. The breakfast menu offers several different kinds of Lefse (the Norwegian equivalent to the tortilla) breakfast burritos --- which is topped with Hollandaise sauce instead of Salsa. While the burritos wont pack the same punch as their south of the border cousins, they're interesting... in a good way. The place also offers a wide variety of homemade pies and (of course) deep fried Walleye (Heaven forbid a Northern MN or WI restaurant forget to offer deep fried Walleye). While I wouldn't say it is on the top ten places i would go for breakfast - remember you're trapped in Hayward, WI and you will definitely need a good meal before you find your way back to civilization.
