Zin - Uncommon California Italian Menu

The reviews are correct, no better than a 3 star place. We tried the mussels which were smothered in average marinara. I ordered a steak which was not great. Very tender but bland flavor??? I know it's an Italian Restaurant, but they have steak in Italy and I didn't tell them to put steak on the menu. No salt and pepper on any of the tables and I got a chilly response when I asked for salt. Finally, the water choices were "Artisanal or sparkling". Really? Pewaukee? You have a Friday Fish Fry but don't offer tap water?

Beautiful decor. Food was tasty and inventive. Location was perfect for seeing a play at Lake Country Playhouse. I would for sure come back.

I live right down the street and even when I'm craving Italian I don't go here. It's overpriced, under portioned, and doesn't fit the neighborhood at all. Does California Italian mean you pay extra? The only reason they get one star is because they occasionally have live music.

The atmosphere is lovely! The waitress was very personable, knowledgable, and sweet. Food was very tasty- we had the wild rice ravioli, bbq chicken pizetta, rigatoni with Italian sausage, & shrimp scampi- loved every dish!!!! The date night offer for $25 a head was awesome- came with a bottle of wine, dessert, 2 entrees, & appetizer.

had the seabass encrusted and artichoke rissoti, overall not to bad. See bass was not was buttery but was a very big portion. The company made up for the experience. However dessert was yummy! Sensual chocolate cake was creamy and not too rich but yummy. Would go again but for ambiance.

This has interesting decor. They serve martinis in stainless steel and this is where I had my first taste of Ketel One vodka. :) As far as food, it was a bit above average, yet we don't find ourselves returning all that often. We will probably return in the summer time.

Sunday night 4-12 and M-Th 4-6 fixed price meal of $21 includes soup/salad, entree, and dessert--very good deal. Roasted pistacio and apple salad was quite good. Enjoyed the penne bolognese but a little too much meat for me. Cheesecake was rich, moist and satisfying. I would eat here again.

Unfortunately the last few times I've been here the food has been a disappointment. Zin had been my favorite place in lake country. The fish in my cioppino this evening was way over cooked and horribly underseasoned. My companion's sausage rigatoni was average. Our waitress was sweet but lacked knowledge about the menu (which she admitted! :-)). The atmosphere is fairly noisy; not intimate at all. I wish I had better things to say, but nothing was outstanding here. I will say that they serve generous salads at lunch. I would come for lunch, but not for a night out.

This is a fantastic establishment to eat or just to grab a drink. My lady had the pineapple upside down martini which was absolutely amazing and they make a killer jack on the rocks, lol. My personal favorite of the appetizers we had, out of five of them, was the calamari. I had the ribeye steak for dinner which I was able to cut with a butter knife. Perfect! The only negative about this place which is why I only gave it 4 stars was the chairs. They are very uncomfortable. Otherwise BRAVO!

I got the grill chicken Cobb salad and it was delicious. I don't think I'd go back tho because the tables were too close and it was too loud. When we were seated we had to squeeze between two tables. I really felt terrible when the guy was eating and was jolted as I squeezd sideways between the tables. That ruined the whole experience The guy looked at me and gave me a dirty look. It was so loud in there I could barely hear the waitress or my dining companion. Not relaxing at all. Maybe they could change the acoustics. There was music but I could barely hear that either. They should remove one table to allow room once patrons are seated. I give it 2 stars

This is a nice little place for delafield. The food is very good from the salads to the steaks. I had the 14 oz rib eye topped with blue cheese and it was cooked to perfection. Mind you the plate was brimming with grilled veggies and Fontana mashed potatoes. (don't expect to finish the whole thing). They specialize in itallian food and have various delicious seafood. Cons: avocado salad only has a sliver of avocado. The place wasn't busy but the service felt slow and you could tell they hated their jobs. They stood 10 feet away staring at our table and didn't notice drinks were empty. Would I go back: yes, but nothing stands out enough to make me wanting to go back anytime soon.

Dishes are good here, pastas, seafoods are all good. We love shrimp & lobster fra diablo pasta, shrimp & scallop conccasse pasta. Of course, Chocolate lasagna always kids' favorite.

Went there for drinks a few days ago and was not impressed by the selection or prices. The decor is beautiful and quite unique, but I don't think that the look of the place makes up for what's served up lacks. Ate there once a few years ago and wasn't impressed... the food was heavy and not so 'uncommon california italian' as it's title suggests. Simply put I'd say this is VERY common italian, maybe worth a look for the decor, but not much else.

My wife and I were in Delafield for our anniversary and had plans at another spot in town. Stopped into Zin on a whim based on the charming castle type appearance of the building and after seeing the inside and the menu, we immediately canceled our previous plans and dined at Zin. If you can, ask for a table upstairs, as its a little more quiet and "cozy". Our server, Sol, was super friendly and very accommodating. From the warm delicious bread they brought out, to the Cesar salad - then the lump crab stuffed tortellini for me, and my wife enjoyed the lobster/shrimp diablo pasta. Simply delicious. Everything. Had the "Cinnamon Toast Crunch" martini for dessert. Definitely give this place a try. We will be back.

We had lunch there earlier today! Very nice ambiance and good service. I had the chicken calzone with pesto. When delivered, it was visually quite impressive and a great value for ten dollars. The problem was that the flavors of the component ingredients were too bland and not well married. The fontina cheese was good and generous but completely separate from everything else in the calzone. Pesto was a component but there should have been a good deal more of it to provide moisture (since the calzone was a bit dry inside), flavor, and to help integrate the other flavors. So, I felt the calzone was good but could have been MUCH better with a few adjustments. My dining partner had the Cobb Salad with goat cheese substituted for blue. The dressing was made in house and she loved her salad. The meal came with warm sourdough bread which was also quite good but I have had better. Overall, our experience at Zin was a good one but with a few 'tweaks' could be a great one. I would recommend this restaurant and will go back but would like to see a few changes made. One of which is the lack of salt and pepper shakers on the tables. You need to ask for them if you wish to have them and my calzone needed some salt to enhance the mild flavors therein.

Last visit we had a group of 10 food was good but the serves was poor 2 of our dinners came so late that most of us were done eating be for there plates arived. Unacceptable. maybe its not a good place to dine with a larger group.

Enjoyed my evening out at Zin with seven friends. Waitstaff was very friendly and prompt. Each of us had a different order and we were all very happy with our meals. My scallops were cooked to perfection! The desserts were very good, as well! It was my first time and I would return for a special occasion dinner or out with friends.

Zin has a spectacular building and decor...but if you've had real seafood before, then is avoid it here. We had the Zin Platter for our app. The calamari tasted like it was frozen, the tuna was very overlooked and the crap cakes just weren't that good. Our waitress called my IPA an amber stout...not sure what exactly that means. 3 in our party had fish and all didn't like it. I had the pork tenderloin and thought it was great. I'm not sure what else is in this area, but I'd probably find a different spot.

The decor is hip and trendy, and the atmosphere is fun. However, on Friday and Saturday nights, the acoustics make for a loud, busy setting and takes away from a semi-casual night out. The food itself is good, not great. I will agree with the other reviews saying that it is quite inconsistent. I usually have the Chicken Cacciatori Ravioli, and request for it to be extra spicy. There was one instance that I found a chicken bone in my ravioli, but we had desserts on the restaurant. Overall, it's a decent place to go to for a night out in Lake Country. I have gone there a few times on dates, and speaking as someone in high school, I think you get the most bang for your buck with Zin's pizzettas.

I came here for a company sponsored retirement dinner. It was free food, so I can't complain too much, but figured my review might help others, and possibly the restaurant staff / chefs improve their product and service. The waitstaff was friendly, but a little forgetful. We were greeted right away and got out drinks quickly, but our waitress forgot to get water for everyone after being asked to do so by our company's owner. I had to ask for mine a second time. The chairs reminded me of chairs from elementary school. Wooden, hard and enormously uncomfortable after sitting for a while (it was a retirement dinner, so I was there for 3 hours). For appetizers, we had Marguerite flatbread, bruschetta caprese and Fried Calamari. I arrived a little late, so both the flatbread and calamari were cold for me so I can't say much about how they tasted fresh from the kitchen. Nevertheless, neither of these had much flavor at all. The bruschetta was a similar experience. I couldn't taste the basil, tomato, balsamic vinegar or mozzarella cheese at all in the caprese. In fact, the mozzarella was so flavorless I actually wondered if it was tofu. For starters, I ordered the chopped avocado salad. It was fresh and had little bits of bacon(?) mixed in, but lacked a touch of vinegar or lemon / lime juice. Some fresh ground pepper made it better. The menu was to include scallops, but when we arrived, they were missing from it. A little finagling by the company owner and it was back on the menu, so I ordered them. They came with what was called vegetable risotto. The rice was chewy and there was no creaminess to it. It also lacked flavor overall. I ended up scraping away the rice to find the tiny vegetables, which was its only redeeming quality. There were just three scallops on the plate outside a gigantic mound of the "risotto". The first scallop was cooked perfectly. The second less so, and the third was rubber. These had a ton of flavor and was the best part of the dinner apart from their inconsistency. It would have been nice if they were all cooked properly. For desert, I had the chocolate lasagna. The mascarpone cheese was delicious. But each layer was made of some kind of chewy chocolate-like sheet of something. I couldn't figure out what it was; it mostly tasted of nothing with a hint of cocoa. Whatever those sheets were ruined the desert. So did the Hershey's Syrup drizzled over it. Why couldn't the chef make his/her own chocolate sauce? In all, I would say the restaurant has mediocre food with relatively good service and hard uncomfortable seats.

The decor was cool when Zin opened but it looks a little dated these days. The glasswork, in particular, reminds me of a bad Chihuly exhibit that ran too long as a museum. This is a place to get a drink and maybe a pizzetta, but the entrees are wildly inconsistent in my experience. I've had very good food here, but I've also had food that made me wonder why I went out to eat that night instead of cooking for myself. The seafood is generally fresh and reasonably well-prepared, but often a little overcooked. The pasta dishes are more consistent, but less desirable overall. Outdoor seating is nice here in the summer months, and service is always decent. I just wish that they would work on their execution and deliver a bit more consistency in the kitchen.

I liked the atmosphere, but the food wasn't great. I had an apple leaf salad that wasn't great and the fish was very bland. The vegetables that the fish were on didn't help either. Spice, guys - you need flavor! Also had the tiramisu for dessert. It was definitely not a traditional preparation and I couldn't tell if I liked it more or less because of that. Probably more. All in all a pretty forgettable experience.

This is a really cute space! I enjoyed our meal here this weekend. We started with a margherita flat bread that was absolutely delicious. I ordered the pistachio & apple salad that was a huge portion for $8. We had excellent service as well.

This seems to be the closet place to "fine dining" it's a pretty over priced for the quality of food. Nothing uncommon here, it's your typical Italian. Atmosphere is ok, but starting to feel outdated. I would go back there for drinks, not for food.

Zin has a cool atmosphere to have a drink with friends, though the bar is very small. But if you love good food, go elsewhere. Every one of at least 10 dishes I have had at Zin has been bland and boring, despite the wonderful descriptions on the menu.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
