Fun place out of the industrial era with a great interior decor that brings you blacksmiths shop. The food is incredibly great. A recommended vegetarian entree is cheesy asparagus soup and vodka cream sauce pasta. Both dishes are filled with creamy goodness cheese from Wisconsin! #veggieabroad

At a loss for where to eat, the woman at the winery suggested the nearby Anvil Pub and Grille. Great choice for a nice lunch on a summer's day. We ate outside, so I can't tell you what it is like inside the restaurant. We sat right by the Cedar Creek, with a lovely view of the old building that houses the restaurant and a beautiful view of the creek. We were in the shade, but there are umbrellas at most tables too, so even on a hot day I suspect the patio is pleasant. The staff was very attentive. Our water glasses never emptied, our order taken promptly with lots of descriptions and recommendations from the waitress. All of the wait staff checked on us whenever they walked by the table, making sure we were comfortable, the food was good, our drinks OK, etc. It wasn't a long wait after we ordered before our food began arriving. I had a blackened salmon salad and my wife had the barbeque duck pita. The duck pita was superb! The duck was shredded or pulled so the barbeque sauce would be spread throughout. It was moist but with crispy bits here and there. Topped with chives and parsley, and not much more. But it was excellent. The salad was good. Nice fresh vegetables-- a good assortment of spring greens, scallions, sliced tomatoes that were clearly ripe, some cucumber slices, and a few diced red peppers. The salmon was a square fillet a bit smaller than a deck of cards. It was cooked well, and the blackening was good, but to be honest it tasted like it was a frozen filet that one can heat up quickly in the microwave before cooking. It was good only because the greens were so good. The dressing too was a bit of a disappointment as it was almost clearly bottled bleu cheese dressing. The place was nice enough in appearance I expected more. I'd go again, to be sure, if for nothing else that the patio. That was great. Not too crowded, well tended by the wait staff, and so pleasant we lingered for a long time after lunch. We had a couple of post lunch beers; the waitress was kind to recommend some local craft brews that were quite good. Unlike many Cedarburg places, it is noteworthy that it has a parking lot. A big plus on days when the town is busy. It wasn't so busy when we visited, but it was nice to have the parking nearby as I pulled a leg muscle the day before and was having a very hard time walking any distance. Even though my salad was somewhat mundane, I still would go back. But the execution of the salad means one less star.

I've been waiting 40 minutes for my entrée my soup hasn't arrived yet. Took 20 minutes for us to receive our appetizers. Appetizers were sub par at best. Don't eat here if your in a rush. Better service at Applebee's. Finally got soup after 50 minutes. The soup wasn't very good. Bread and butter is good. But I'm still hungry.... After an hour I still haven't received my entrée. One of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. 1 hour and 10 minutes. That's a record. The longest I've ever waited for a dinner. And they got our order wrong. Had to send a dish back because it taste horrible. For the price the wait and and the taste I don't recommend.

Well, I haven't been here for almost two years, and during that time, this place has really dropped off. Had the flat iron steak, medium rare. It was tough and stringy. Not at all what you would expect for a $20 steak. It was like something you would expect from a diner for 8.99. To add fuel to the fire, they charge an extra 1.50 for mushrooms and onions. I thought for the extra charge you would get fresh large mushrooms, but instead there were 6 tiny little slices like the canned ones, with a pile of fried onions. It was ridiculous enough that I complained about it. The waitress said "I'll be sure to tell them" and walked away. Didn't offer to take them off the bill or anything. My gosh, for 1.50, how can they not? That is just plain stupid. Other than that, service was good, but I will not go back as I have to agree with the others, this place has turned into a tourist trap. Great atmosphere, but terrible, overpriced food. I would avoid it. If you want a good steak, head south and go to Farmstead. Longer wait, but awesome food.

Great atmosphere, super service, and excellent food to make it a wonderful experience. Can totally reccomend this restaurant, nice selection on the menu, great conscise wine list.

Good, solid place to eat. We started with the pesto stuffed cheese sticks, and they were (a) giant) and (b) delicious. And the portion size was large, too. My fiance had a salad and I had a burger. The burger was ok. The patty could have been thicker, and a bit rarer (I asked for med rare). Fries were yummy. Waitress was nice, but a bit slow and didnt bring refills on my diet coke quickly.

Beautiful renovated building. A little on the expensive side and the service we had on this particular trip left much to be desired. Would more than likely try again sometime but there's other places in the area would frequent 1st.

We've been here a handful of times and it's always wonderful service everytime we go. Last night our server was BETH--she's awesome. She read the specials and beers at the perfect pace so that you could understand and hear everything they had to offer. In addition, she was extremely precise when we placed our order. She was very attentive to our needs and made our experience outstanding! Job well done!

Old blacksmith'ery turned rustic chic Pub and Grille??? Yes, please! I have really great memories of coming to this 19th century building as a child and watching in fascination as the blacksmiths would do blacksmith things while my Poppa (Grandpa) would narrate the goings-on so it's only natural that I was extremely excited to see that it was renovated into a restaurant; the interior of this joint is nothing but fantastic. I went with a burger that had accompaniments of grilled onions, provolone cheese, and a blue cheese sauce that tied the ciabatta goodness all together. I opted for a side salad while and one of my table-mates got the black and tan onion rings (read: beer battered onion rings drizzled with stout beer); the onion rings were fantastic! For dessert we went with the chocolate lava cake that was extremely exceptional! To drink, I got the local Cedar Creek Cranberry Blush- it was smooth a perfect light afternoon drink; I need to order a case now. If you're ever in this charming town- don't miss this joint and take a few seconds to ask your server about its history. Also, if you go during the spring or summer months there is an outside patio that overlooks the Cedar Creek waterfall- sit there and let me know how much you love it.

I came here for lunch with a group of four-the space is very nice and atmosphere very nice. However, the meal falls short of something even from Applebee's or another bad food chain. I ordered the salmon salad and my greens were going bad and smallest portion of salmon I've ever seen at a restaurant was laid on top....add a few mandarin oranges and a quarter sized slice of bread and there goes $9! My husband ordered the veggie burger, which was fine...the only redeeming part of the meal was the onion rings. The waitress was plenty nice and helpful and the restaurant itself was nice....but my only recommendation is go for the onion rings or nothing at all!

Atmosphere was quaint. Service was okay, but a tad on the unfriendly side. food was good, not great. I would eat there again, but wouldn't go out of my way to do so.

Everything they serve comes out of a Sysco bag, box or can. Not a place that cares about food. The setting is nice though.

Cool atmosphere and design. I've always eaten upstairs in the "loft" part of the restaurant. Food is good. Beer selection could be better. The service was good and FAST. Creative menu with a good black bean burger.

A staple. The soup, any kind, is delicious. Try the soup. Moved to area from Milwaukee, and this has become our consistent fail-safe place if we feel like heading out & don't feel like taking the adventure of trying anything new. Can count on a good crowd of customers, good service, and good food (but not amazing fine dining - this is American food, not a 5 star restaurant by any means). Noticed they have a happy hour we may need to try out... Prices our on par for Cedarburg. Cedarburg prices are similar to Milwaukee prices. I expect this is because even though it is "small town" it is kind of touristy...

We went on a hot July afternoon. Sitting outside by the river, with some shade, was delightful. We were seated immediately. Our server was knowldegable, friendly and efficient. Hopefully this means past service issues in other reviews are behind them. The beers were fresh and delicious. The onion rings are very good. Hamburgers are excellent, on are really good bakey bun, not some wonderbread thing. Many sandwiches are on a tasty homemade puffy flatbread that is really good. We also like the Asian-flavoered cole slaw that was offerred as a choice. All in all a delightful place with good food.

I've eaten here numerous times, never a disappointment. I love the atmosphere and really enjoy eating in their outdoor section in the summer.

  • Steve S.

I've been there several times. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Food is so so. Nothing too exciting. They need to change their menu since they opened. Make food that is different than the same old. Just watch some tv shows like Eat Street, Diners, DriveIns and Dives. See what the rest of America is eating. Drive it up a notch. Make it and they will come.

With its great location and historic setting, this place has so much potential. It makes me want to cry that the food is absolutely terrible. It is actually disgusting; they charge ridiculous amounts of money for the most poorly prepared food using the cheapest, processed ingredients thrown together with zero imagination or talent. I've seen the industrial food truck delivering their items. It's the same one that delivers to the county jail. With organic, fresh grown produce and quality meats, etc.available, why do they insist on feeding us junk? Because they can! Cedarburg deserves so much better, yet they settle for crap.

I love this place! My husband and I are always looking for small town restaurants (no chains). The atmosphere was fantastic. We waited an extra 10 minutes to be seated outdoors along the small creek. The food was fantastic, the waitstaff was fantastic... I had the salmon dinner and my husband had the bacon wrapped chicken drizzled with maple syrup...oh ya! Sounds weird, but amazing. The place had a upper scale feel to it...I have put this on in the book to visit again if we are in the area. It's located in the cute historical town of Cedarburg.

Charming little lunch spot on the river but I wouldn't go back. It's very small and too long of a wait. 30 min. wait for a table, then another 10 mins. to get a beverage. I had asked for extra lemon with my iced tea and I got one paper thin slice. I asked a busbyoy that came by for more and 5 mins. later he came back and said they were cutting up more. He never returned. Ordered the tomato basil soup, which was thick and more like a stew. The chunks of tomatoes hadn't been peeled and had tough skin on them. Ended up leaving without ordering our lunch because of the service being soooo slow.

Ambiance: No complaints here. Exposed brick, nice décor and a split level dining room. Has a nice fire pit oven which gives the restaurant a homey feel. Beverages: Full Bar. Coke products. Wine List. They got their bases covered. Food: The menu is not very large which typically means the kitchen should have no issue turning out a first rate meal sadly that was not the case here. We ordered the "Toasted Ravioli with Marinara Sauce". The portion size was average, six in an order. The raviolis themselves had a chewy texture I did not dig at all and I swear instead of marinara sauce they opened a can of crushed tomatoes and called it a day. I did not detect a whiff of seasoning. I got the "Blacksmith Burger" and my dining companion got the "Pattymelt" which I didn't see on the menu and silently cursed myself for not having noticed it. I love pattymelts the way ants love a melted popsicle. After tasting his, I didn't feel so badly. It was the driest pattymelt I have ever tasted. I honestly don't know how he choked it down. My biggest complaint was with my meal though. I ordered my burger rare, and I stressed to the server I meant RARE. I told her I would rather she bring me a raw burger than a barely pink burger. She nodded her head in understanding. People, look through my reviews, it's a constant pet peeve of mine, I LIKE RARE BURGERS, I am practically a fricken lion when it comes to meat. I think you all know where this is going so I shant digress further. No the burger wasn't rare, it was barely pink. And my dilemma as usual is suck it up and eat my dinner at the same time as my D.C. or send it back and wait for them to fix it. Alas I sucked it up and was miserable. The burger itself wasn't very large and the bun it was on overwhelmed it and was a tad dry. The sad fact is the food here is a totally miss. Completely outside target range. Staff: Made no attempt to establish any rapport with us. Took our orders, did the bare minimum of her job requirements and that was about it. The food did come out quickly so they have that going for them. At the end of the day, it is really quite sad. The boyfriend lives within walking distance of this place and had this been a good meal we probably would have frequented more often.

Outdoor patio overlooks the river- it is gorgeous. The place is so quaint with it's history and charm. Order the tuna melt- It's amazing. it's 930 am and I'm waiting until they open for lunch so I can order it. I had it yesterday! Any sandwich that is made in the hearth oven is good there- Plus- good selection of beer

This is the best restaurant I've been to in Ozaukee County so far. The food always tastes fresh and the menu is inventive, at lease for WI standards. You can expect to try things you haven't had before. I especially liked the Salmon Pesto Soup, which I believe was a daily special. I know I can count on getting a good meal here.

Fairly decent food, although a few knocks... We tried a few soups, a few sandwiches, two kids meals and dessert. Here are our thoughts: - The sandwiches and soups were good, although nothing remarkable. - Service was just OK. Nothing bad, nothing great, but acceptable. Our waiter didn't know the menu as well as I think he should have, as when I asked several basic questions (such as the type of soup base) he didn't know. - The kids meals were small, even by kids meal standards. The atmosphere and layout is not kid friendly, although I really didn't have high expectations because it is directed at the adult audience anyways. - Prices are a bit high for what you get, but after all everything in this part of Cedarburg is high. We paid $70 for 2 sandwiches (about $10 each), 2 kids meals ($5 each), two cups of soup ($4 each), two milks for the kids ($2 each), 2 beers ($5 each) and a dessert ($6) - plus tax and tip. - The dessert was just plain bad. It was their Tres Leche cake, which is made by a local baker. How they classify this as Tres Leche, I have no idea. It was very dry and almost flavorless. Overall, I may go back, but I won't be in a hurry to do so...

We were on the return leg of our InterUrban bike trail ride, we were starving, and it was threatening rain. We rolled into downtown Cedarburg and decided on the Anvil based on our location and Yelp reviews. They really need some bike racks considering their close proximity to this very busy trail as there were bicycles chained to trees and chairs everywhere we looked. They have a gorgeous deck with a view of the river but with the weather threatening rain Everyone had moved inside. We were informed it was going to be 45 to 50 minutes for a seat which was a real drag but just then the hostess spotted a small table opening up in the bar and asked if we would like to sit there - sure! Like a shot she was cleaning up the food and plates from the previous occupants and had it wiped down and ready to go for us within about two minutes whilst still doing her hostess duties - very impressive! It only got better from there. This place is one of my recent favorites regarding the staff. Very friendly and attentive. With everybody hustling because of the mass exodus of the people on the deck into the main restaurant everyone was really on their toes. Our waters were repeatedly filled as soon as they were empty and our waiter was exceptional in that he knew when to leave us alone and once or twice when we needed something it merely took a look from me to him from across the room and he was at our table side like a shot. So service exceptional now onto the food: the menu is basic sandwiches burgers and salads. My daughter ordered a barbecue chicken sandwich which was the special of the day. I had the chicken club sandwich with the black and tan onion rings and my wife had a salad with chicken. Basically all very good with the onion rings being exceptional. The general vibe of the place is cool as it is set in an old historic building with a three story high ceiling and lots of cool old artifacts around. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to catch lunch who's riding the Ozaukee County Interurban bike trail or feel free to drive there! You won't be disappointed.

This place lacks something, I have not been able to figure out what, it's a lovely space in a great location but as a vegetarian it's a frustrating experience. It ma be a fun place to just hang out by the bar for cocktails. But the food is average in taste but high in price for what is basically a glorified burger joint.

This is my all-time favorite place to eat in the Cedarburg area, or most areas for that matter. Despite often having a wait because they don't take reservations, Anvil always delivers a positive experience. When there is a wait, they have a good sized bar area (for how small they are) with a good drink selection and friendly bartenders. Their wait staff has always been friendly and the food is AMAZING. My fiancé and I have ordered a variety of foods from the menu including the chicken parm sandwich, burgers, the BLTC, and my absolute fave, Anvil Chicken. Chicken stuffed with chivy cream cheese wrapped in bacon drizzled in maple syrup... Does life get much better? The sides are great too, especially the mashed potatoes. The cranberries in the mixed veggies is a nice change of pace from the norm, and I love that they always have a unique flavor of butter with their bread! (i.e. Lemon poppyseed) Anvil is definitely in my top 3 places to dine of all time.

The Onion Rings and the Beer are the only reasons I come here, their burgers are interesting.. but not in a good way.. The staff is friendly but the restaurant is not built to hold a lot of people so it can get crowded fast

very small. We were offered a high table near the entrance where everyone was coming and going. Not good. 45 min wait. We left. Can't comment on the food since we didn't eat there.

The Anvil has a successful decor which combines an LCD TV and rustic old forge. The stars of lunch were the high quality $8 sandwiches. We had the BBQ Pork which actually tasted like pork, not BBQ sauce and the tuna melt which was spiked with fresh dill and served on some sorta thick, chewy pita bread. They have great fries. Why don't more places have great fries. The Bloody Mary was lemony in a good way. Everything tasted fresh.

  • Ian Y.

I've heard a lot of really great things about this place, but I went at the wrong time. We got in before the cook did, so we were only allowed to explore the appetizers. Which were fine, but felt like prepackaged extravagances without any human touch. I loved the atmosphere, but I'll need to come back for dinner next time I'm in town.

Beautiful decor! I wish I could live in a place that looked like this restaurant. I wasn't a fan of the bloody mary (too much celery salt) but the cheeseburger on a pretzel bun was fantastic.

Love this place - especially for their bloody mary bar on Sundays! But also, their homemade bread for their paninis is amazing (I just wish I wasn't gluten intolerant now!)

It's small, but insanely charming, the building is such a gem, and the food is good. I ordered a special, cedar plank Mahi Mahi - first let me say I rarely order fish, next let me say it was delicious. Service was excellent, overall, worth the wait. The best part, the bill! I'm from Chicago, and it would be unheard of to get two fish dinners and drinks for $52 with tip in Chicago! This place is a little treasure!

We spent a couple of days in Cedarburg and resisted the urge to eat here for every meal! This rennovated historical anvil was charming, warm, welcoming and popular! We settled in on the beautiful torch-lit patio along the creek, and chose a great wine. They greeted us with warm crusty bread and herbed butter. We had the cedar-planked salmon, one blackened and one regular. Both were amazing! Our tossed greens were drizzled with an awesome balsamic vinaigrette, and the entire experience was unforgettable. A must while in adorable Cedarburg.

The patio area on the river is the best spot in Cedarburg. [Silver Creek Brewery is the runner up]. Inside is interesting but crowded. We have been there several times as it is close. Couple of observations: Weekends are extremely busy and the place is not that big. Avoid the weekends if you are local, or enjoy the wait. Get a bottle at the winery to keep you company. The sandwiches are excellent. Not huge, but excellent. A number of appetizers and entrees fall into the "tiny food" category. The bruschetta is especially entertaining. Very small and covered with creme cheese? Never again. Wine pours are very very small. Order a bottle. One bottle=8 glasses. I kid you not. Kitchen, bar help and most servers are 18-24. Nothing against that age group, but once the friends and employees that have clocked out show up at the bar, it can get annoying. Especially when they get a hold of the music. We walked because of it. Overall a great place if you can get the right table on the right night. Otherwise it can be disappointing.

Was not impressed. Took my mom here for her birthday, we waited almost 20 minutes to be acknowledged once we were seated. Waited over 30 for our food. The waitress was mediocre and the bluegill sandwiches that we ordered were greasy and very fishy (no pun intended) tasting. It looks great. The staff was friendly enough, but if you're looking for good service & good food- this is certainly not the place.

Had the grilled salmon salad with Balsamic vinaigrette. The salmon was well seasoned and seared on the outside to keep the inside juicy and flavorful. Also sampled my husband's perch which had a delicious parmesean breadcrumb crust. Good wine selection and cozy atmosphere. Located right in the heart of the shops in downtown Cedarburg. As an out of towner and visiting from the east coast, it was a great value as well. Would come again for a casual dinner.

This was our first trip here and based on the other reviews we were looking forward to a great lunch. After waiting over 15 minutes for a server to stop at the table, we quickly placed our order for the lunch special, black and tan onion rings and drinks. The onion rings were great, fresh and hot. Lunch was not so great. We waited over 30 minutes for our food; when I asked about the wait I was told that they only have one oven for cooking. When our food arrived (blue gill fish sandwhich and fries) it was very greasy and not that hot. The rye bread was soaked in butter and the fish was greasy. After the long wait, I was very disappointed.

One of our favorite spots. Modern takes on American food with some great twists. Historic building and great atmosphere. Wonderful patio in the back overlooking the river. Slightly small menu but fun to try something with each new trip.

Located in a historic blacksmith shop, very cool atmosphere! Good sandwiches and fries. The service leaves a little to be desired but we sat upstairs and I felt bad for the waitress having to run up and down those steps. My husband said his burger was good. If you're in the area check it out for lunch!

It's only a few blocks from my home so I'd love to rate the Anvil but the four times I've been there, they have never had less than a 45 minute wait. Granted, it's at ground zero in a tourist town but 0-15 minutes is the norm in Cedarburg even during the busiest festivals. With dozen of other good options located a few blocks away, there is no reason to wait 45+ minutes for a pub burger.

I was very impressed with this place from start to finish. A friendly hostess brought us to our table where we were greeted by our friendly server. Ordered the Anvil Bites to munch on while we waited for our lunch. I wasn't blown away with them, they were good but not Great. For my sandwich I tried the Chicken Club with Black & Tan Onion Rings. Chicken Club was a nice mix of ingredients and flavors, very tasty and a nice change of pace (Wish it would of been a bit larger). Black & Tan Onion rings were excellent, I'm not a huge onion ring fan but I love beer so why not... My friend got the burger and was very happy as well. Great little place can't wait to go back!!

Lovely setting in an old smithy next to the Milwaukee River in historic Cedarburg. The food is standard Americana with nods toward its smithing past, but not in a way that actually changes the food (just the names of the food). Here, there are bits of ham in the butter. Hm. Only in Wisconsin! The food is fine. It's the setting you come here for.

My boyfriend and I have been here a couple times after recently moving to Cedarburg and I am disappointed I haven't written a review for this place sooner! The atmosphere is delightful. This restaurant is located in the Cedar Creek Settlement in what appears to be an old barn or something to that effect. The place is old and rustic looking - in a good way. The food is fantastic. So far we've tried various pasta dishes, their burgers and salmon. Every meal was spectacular. The chicken in their pasta (if you choose pasta with chicken) had a nice grilled flavor that I've never experienced at another restaurant. We thoroughly love this place and will continue to go back!

We were visiting from Phoenix and were told about the Anvil and we weren't disappointed. We had burgers and the salmon salad. The food and service were excellent. On our next visit, for our Daughter's graduation, the Anvil will definitely be on our itinerary.

My wife and I stopped here after checking out some of the shops. We caught them at the tail end of brunch, so my wife quickly placed a brunch order, and i had one of their steakburgers. When our food arrived, i was pleasantly surprised at how good the beer onion rings were. You could actually taste the stout in the batter. My steak burger was served on a ciabatta roll which was another surprise. However the patty in the burger could have been thicker or bigger and wasn't cooked to the med-rare i asked for. Instead it was well done, and rather dry. My wife enjoyed her brunch, although her poached eggs were a bit runny. The service was great, and we didn't wait long for drinks or food.

Fellow Yelpers, I am surprised at all the good yelps coming in for Anvil. I do agree that the building is cool and sitting outside by the waterfall is pretty enjoyable, but the food sucks and the service is marginal at best. For my money, I would much rather go to The Farmstead or venture down to Thiensville and eat at Remington's. I really wish I could get on board with what some of you are saying considering I can bike there from my house, but I maybe go once a year and each time (like last week) am disappointed. I am sure I will end up there next year again and thus the cycle continues, but would love someone to buy that place who knows how to treat a customer and not offer crappy food at above normal prices. It has such potential...

A truly great place to eat and experience the historic town of Cedarburg. Located right along Cedar Creek and next to the Cedarburg winery, the Anvil is a great spot to fulfill your appetite. To start, I recommend an app of generous nachos, delicious mozzarella sticks, or the amazing south of Cedarburg sticks. For lunch I recommend the chicken club forge sandwich with a seasonal side and onion rings, or a blacksmith burger. During nighttime, you can't go wrong with the vodka pene pasta with shrimp or chicken!

it was our first time in for dinner and it was amazing. Courtney our server was personable, outgoing, efficient & helpful with favorite suggestions. We all ordered soup, some of us had the SW Steak soup - which truly the best choice for such a cool night. Cream based, full of tender steak, black beans & corn. Could have been spicier if it was up to me, but over all - excellent. The Wedding Soup had allot of nice extras like tomatoes & whole leaf spinach - again really good. Our entrees were the bacon wrapped chicken stuffed with herbed cream cheese - omg. Simply amazing; the saltiness of the bacon worked perfectly with the cream cheese that was not too rich but balanced well with the plump chicken breast. Did I mention it was brushed with maple syrup? Our other entree was the perch. Really tasty, light & fresh. The coating was a perfect accompaniment to the fish. Both entrees had veggies & yummy garlic mashed red potatoes. Our wine by the glass, Gnarly Head Zin suggested by our server & it did not disappoint. Over all, an excellent experience. I will definitely return if I'm in town. My only suggestion is the bread was not up to par with the other offerings. A nice crunch baguette style bread would have been perfect with the soup.

This was a surprise to us. We found it one night as we were looking for another place. We grabbed dinner and it was phenomenal. The best shrimp I have had in the entire city. The place is beautiful and the service is perfect. Prices were less expensive than I would expect for the great quality of the food. TRY THE SHRIMP!!!

We went to the Anvil twice during our stay in Cedarburg, Once for drinks on the patio by the water fall, beautiful and the staff very friendly. And back that evening for dinner. This time on the mezzanine. The waitress was an inattentive bore (one star down), but we will forget that. The food was great, I had shrimp fixed thee ways, delightful. The atmosphere was old stone, wood, and still a contemporary feel. Neat trick and I did not see anyone else in town up to their standards.

Wonderful food and a great atmosphere inside of this old blacksmith make it a must visit if you are in the area. Highly recommend the black and tan onion rings!!

One of our favorite lunch spots in the area. Excellent summertime patio seating by the water. You need to get there early to beat the rush. The upstairs seating area is always a bit on the chilly side so ladies be warned. The forge bread(is that what it's called?) is excellent. Chicken Parm. Sandwich A++

Had a burger that reminded me of the old Wendy's commercial, "Where's the beef?"! Nice location and atmosphere.

Having called the auction for Dan Nauman, the blacksmith that previously occupied the site, I was curious to see how they transformed a working blacksmith shop into a trendy Cedarburg joint. Wow! Great job! Fortunately it was not the classic case of nice digs but lousy food. We've been there half a dozen times and haven't been disappointed. Worth the stop for a good lunch.

I'd usually be concerned with the loss of an actual blacksmith but in this case I like the change.

Great new hangout in Cedarburg! Anvil opened in the old blacksmith's shop (if you're familiar with Cedarburg) earlier in 2008 and is quite a hot little place. Open for lunch and dinner the menu is full of yummy options...pesto mozzarella sticks and atichoke dip are two big hits off the appetizer menu as are the beer-battered onion rings! Anvil's sandwiches are baked in their stone hearth oven and come out nice and warm! My patty melt was great and the Hammer Dog was one of the best dogs I've had anywhere! Service was VERY good too. Really quite a surprise how good this place is. CHECK IT OUT.

the outdoor patio alongside the river is fantastic in nice weather, even if it is a 40 minute wait. servers are super busy which means you may be waiting for refills. i wish the food was as good as the view-- salad was good, but not amazing. something was missing. perhaps i should have ordered something else? closed on Sundays. boo.

Worst ever possible service. Couldn't get seated or get food and drinks for over 35 minutes and the place was nearly empty! Eventually we got up and served ourselves because the waitress knew nothing about courtesy, cleanliness, or proper restaurant service. A totally disgusting experience like none other anywhere in Wisconsin. Would you want your waitress putting her hands all over your food and in your beverages?!! YUCK! Nice atmosphere but eating with the alleycats would've been cleaner and more pleasant.

I must just say the outdoor seating at Anvil is close to perfection! A completely lovely set up, right next to the river. I could sit and eat while looking at that scenery daily! The food was good, not mind blowing on flavor, but definitely good. Fresh, well put together, tasty. Fairly priced. Our server was friendly and attentive. Overall nice experience and would certainly dine at Anvil again.

My husband and I just left after having one of the most disappointing meals of our trip. The house salads were good, and the chocolate butter was quite tasty. However, if the salad and bread were the best part of the meal, you know there were problems. I ordered the Chicken Advil, it's a chicken breast stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon. The bacon was completely black on all sides. If I didn't know it was bacon, I would never identified it . Needless to say, the chicken was almost completely dried out. My husband got the Lake Perch. It was also overcooked and extremely over seasoned. Perch is such a mild fish, tons of rosemary and breading did nothing to add to the flavor. Very disappointing and I would not recommend this restaurant.

I have been to The Anvil a couple of times now. The location is in an absolutely great spot within the Cedar Creek settlement in the beautiful downtown Cedarburg area. They have a very nice outdoor seating area next to the river. The service and food have always been good. They bake their own bread used in their sandwiches which is delicious. Prices are a little high based only on the food items, but is justified by the rest of the experience. I recommend The Anvil as a stop anytime. Cheers.

I've been here a few times with the first being during a Cedarburg street festival - Strawberry fest so I wanted to go back and check it out on a normal day. The other day I biked up here on a Sunday morning to grab brunch or an early lunch. I was surprised to find there was a 20 minute wait on a table of 2 at 11:15 when the back outdoor seating had plenty of open spots. The patio area overlooks the Milwaukee River and truly is a great view yet when the sun goes past the building it does get a little chilly. The place is very cute on how it is in the little village area and has the lofted eating area. The beer selection is inferior to most restaurants with 5 or so beers on tap and then around a dozen that are bottle. The food menu was quite extensive and got some apps and then a burger. The mozzarella sticks are wrapped in wonton wrappers and can even get pesto in them - these were good., The burger was on a chiabatta bread and was struggling to stay together with the large, greasy patty. The Asian slaw was alright yet the burger could have used some more flavor. The service was alright at best yet like Emily F states in her reviews it truly is a place for tourists compared to locals. I would pass this up if you live in the general area. If you're an out-of-towner it may be worth a stop yet there are any places with local flavor on the strip.

This place was a great place for lunch on the river in Cedarburg. You can't beat the ambiance that comes with this place. Beers- I got the amber beer on tap. I was happy with the beer selection. It was small, but there were quality beers on tap. We got the pesto mozzarella sticks as an appetizer. So much potential because they do the wonton wrappers, but lacking with the pesto! You can never have enough pesto in my opinion. We could barely taste it. There were a bunch of other appetizers we were interested in trying, so we will definitely come back. I also got the Cedarburg Salad, their "specialty" salad. It was definitely a good salad, don't get me wrong, but there really wasn't anything "special" about it. Craisens, blue cheese, and chicken. Add some avocado and I would have been much happy with it. All around a good experience, but it really could have been great with some minor changes to some of the menu items.

My husband and I have been here twice for lunch and both times have been great! They were very busy both times but the service was still excellent. We have had the chicken club, tuna melt, Anvil bites, patty melt and everything was delicious! The wood fire oven makes all the sandwiches a step above regular places. Also tried the asparagus soup, pasta salad and the Black and Tan onion rings! No complaints about any of it! My husband says the onion rings are the best he's ever had. Local beers on tap and right next to the winery! We'll be back!

Always a solid spot for good food and service. I've always enjoyed the atmosphere and ambience of the restaurant. Their daily specials are well done and their chicken club never disappoints. The forge bread is great. With all this being said, last weekends visit left a sour taste in my mouth. We were seated upstairs and waited for about 10 minutes until I flagged someone down to let them know we hadn't been greeted yet. Ten minutes felt much longer because there were servers looking at us and they seemed to notice that we were looking for someone to help us. The server was nice when she did approach and she apologized for not knowing about us. The food came out and it was okay. My friend had a pasta dish with chicken and didn't care for it. I had the pub steak and it was alright. It would've been nice if a manager asked us how the meal was, but we didn't see one and the place was busy. This was my first bad experience here, so I'll be back, but it's a tough pill to swallow when you're forgotten about and the food isn't up to expectation.

If you are walking around window shopping in cedarburg and looking for a great sandwich, salad or app you need to stop here. Order the nachos with bbq duck or the south of cedarburg rolls. If you're there on a Sunday the Bloody Mary bar is a must with brunch!! The burgers are wonderful, the soups are creative and delicious, and save room for dessert! If you are lucky enough to be thee on s beautiful day sit outside and enjoy a great view of the Milwaukee river.

Stopped in here for a drink while perusing the shops and wineries of downtown Cedarburg. Cute little place! Just tried a Bloody Mary and it was good, although I hear they have a build-your-own bar on Sundays. Would love to come back and check that out as well as order food here. Was here for lunch last week and (while I'm not that fond of the restaurant, my mom loves their BLT). It was a strange experience because the BLTs were both missing tomato and the pickle that comes with. Since we had already waited for like 20 minutes for our sandwich my mom didn't want to send it back but told the waitress the tomato was missing and so was the pickle. She said they were out of them. Ummmm... Don't you tell your customers that when they order? My mom was kind of snotty because the waitress was like"we try our best" and "we do the best we can"... And then he waitress brought over what she called "pickles from the bar" which literally looked chewed on. But please... After all this charge me .50 for ranch.

Drinks were alright, bartender was super rude. Out of towners that probably won't be revisiting just cause the service. Coming from servers in a big city this was small town "funk"

This was a really good dining experience overall. I am impressed with this restaurant. At first, we didn't think we were going to stay. They don't take reservations, and when we got there around 6 on a Saturday night, we were quoted a time of an hour and a half to an hour and forty five minutes. YOWZA!! We had our three year old son with us, so we didn't think we were going to be able to wait (patience is not in Little Man's vocabulary). But right after we had made the choice to go elsewhere, the host came up to us and said it would be able 15-20 minutes because a large party was leaving. That was WAY more manageable, so we decided to try! I am really glad we did! The food and drinks were amazing! While we were waiting for a table, I ordered an Amaretto Stone Sour, which went down like water :) Not in a bad way, just in a delicious way! So when we were seated, I ordered a margarita and the BLTC. I cannot stress to you how delicious this sandwich is. It's on a pita-type bread and it's chocked FULL of bacon, lettuce tomato, cheese, and mayo (and I am not usually a mayo person). The fries are crispy and delicious and the margarita was top notch! Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food (my friend's chicken dumpling soup looked amazing) and my son really liked his PB&J and fries. He downed those fries like they were going out of style! Service was quick and friendly, and we had a great time and wonderful food. I will definitely be back!

We brought some friends to Cedarburg to check out the winery and wanted to grab a late lunch. We eyeballed the menu posted outside the Anvil Pub & Grille and our group of six decided we could all find something to eat there, so we put our name in and were told that it would be about a 15 minute wait for a table inside (at least an hour wait to sit outside). The nice thing was that they took a cell phone number and would text us when our table was ready. Six minutes later I got the text. The building is very neat architecturally, with a barn-like ceiling and anvil decor throughout. We were seated at a four top with a table for two tacked on the end, which was fine except that each time a server or bus person needed to get past our table to get to the ones behind us on the small area next to the railing, our server would step aside and wait for them, so ordering took longer than normal. The sandwich that my friend wanted, the tuna melt, was not on the menu we were given, although it was on the one outside, and when she asked, our waitress said no, it's not available. I ended up ordering the blackened salmon salad, which came with mandarin oranges and avocado mixed in with the lettuce. When our food arrived, it was pretty much auctioned off from the end of the table of six, which made it a bit hard to hear what was going on when the dishes were presented. The salmon was deliciously prepared, but the salad itself was pretty bland, and kind of an odd combo. The avocado slices were quite firm. Maybe if I would have poured the dressing all over the salad I would have enjoyed it more, but I was using the dipping method. The salmon did make for a nice lunch. All in all this was an OK experience, but next time I would like to try someplace else in town.

We've been coming to this restaurant every year since we've been vacationing in Cedarburg and this is one of 2 restaurants that we ALWAYS eat at. They always have consistently excellent food and great wait staff. I'm sure some of the earlier reviews that don't like the wait staff is due to turnover but the regular wait staff are excellent. The place is relatively small but that only makes sure the food is prepared very well since they don't have to prepare things in bulk, everything is hand made and slow cooked. This is a not-to-miss restaurant.

The location is what draws the tourists... Not the food and DEFINITELY not the service. It's in front of the winery which may or may not be a plus. The service is despicable. I have tried this place four times and will never again.

This place seems to be hit or miss for me. The fish isn't bad, but sometimes the burgers I get are super dry and just plain. The fish platter wasn't bad and some of the other meat choices are pretty good. It tends to be really busy and takes a long time to get a table. Most of the bartenders are not great and lack attentiveness. However there is one bartender (I don't know his name, but noticed he has hearing aids) who is an EXCELLENT. This guy remembers everything, always gets drinks right, and is just an all around nice guy. Give that bartender a raise!

Nope. We stopped for lunch today and I was most definitely unimpressed. I ordered the Cedarburg salad (greens, walnuts, blue cheese, chicken). Unfortunately the chicken was still pink. I would have brought it to our servers attention, but she didn't check back on us after we started eating. Not wanting salmonella, I just ate around it. Speaking of service, things started out well but went downhill once they sat some folks near us that the server knew. We were basically ignored from that point on. On the positive side, the Mister had a BBQ chicken sandwich that he really liked, thus the two star rating vs. one. I guess the Anvil can get away with sloppy food handling practices because they are right in the Settlement and probably attract lots of one-stop diners. I wont't be back.

The atmosphere is incredible, the food is good, and cooked with care, but the service ruins the entire experience. You wait for a host that gives you a random, and inaccurate wait time, only to be proceeded by rushed wait staff that just can't keep up. A+ for effort, but sometimes that just isn't enough.

Arrived here just as it opened on a Saturday. Really awesome rustic space, but it was absolutely freezing inside! Mom and I had the special which was a burger with spinach and artichoke dip and bacon on top. Good for you it was not, but tasty it was. We also had the black and tan onion rings, which were pretty great. If we hadn't arrived so early, parking definitely would've been a problem. Overall good food, nice people but nothing memorable.

Nestled among a few different shops and the Cedar Creek Winery is this small pub that looks to smaller than it actually is - after walking in, I realized there was an upstairs where additional seating was located. Anvil gave off an industrial feel from the outside, but seemed more modern upon entering. I wondered where the 'pub' theme came from. It just seemed like an average restaurant to me but they definitely play into the historic from the surrounding area. I went on the winery tour with a friend and settled on Anvil after wandering the streets for a bit deciding what to eat. This place was close and of course I was hungry. Ordered the Chicken Club myself which was pretty all-right where my friend ordered a salad. The bacon on my club was delightful. It's not always easy to do bacon well, but it was on par with my liking. Service was pretty good - though it was just before dinner time rush and not many people filled the seats. I would probably check out other places in the area before returning - Cedarburg has so much!

  • Leo D.

Get the Chicken Club. Tis good. Service can be slow, but in Cedarburg where food choices are limited and generally sucky, it's one of the only places worth going. They change up their appetizers and specials every month which is nice.

This place is consistently amazing. Been here five times and I haven't been disappointed yet. I recommend the chicken club or the BLTC.

  • Meghan H.

I had ordered the chicken club (minus the mayo and cheese) and I quickly found that there was not enough chicken on it :( Though all of the other components of the sandwich were great - fresh ciabatta bread, ripe tomato, dark romaine, topped with some relatively thick bacon. It's just the sad portion size of protein that kills this sandwich. The atmosphere was quite nice. Definitely a unique setting amongst the charming shops that make up downtown Cedarburg. While the decor of the restaurant's interior is interesting, they also have a beautiful outdoor dining area that is so perfect for the summer or when the weather is nicer than usual.

Two stars doesn't seem like enough, but three seems like too many. I'll just have to settle on two then. Anvil is perfectly acceptable, but nothing special. It's very cute inside, the atmosphere is comfortable. It wasn't terribly busy, but the staff took their time attending to us once we were seated. I ordered the salmon salad and my companion had the chicken club. He seemed pleased with his choice, and my salad was fine but not anything interesting. Overall, unimpressed but nothing very negative to say.

Go. Now. Stop whatever you're doing and go eat at this little slice of heaven. We stumbled upon this lovely restaurant during a day trip to Cedarburg for some kayaking. We kayaked down Cedar Creek, spotted their patio, parked our kayaks and walked over. All three of us got the "build your own bloody", which had an array of garnishes, both spicy and mild mix, a hearty portion of vodka. and you got to keep your mug (plus, if we bring it back, we get a discount next time :) ). Our waitress, Jane, was awesome. She wasn't absent nor overbearing, checked in on us the perfect amount, and was knowledgable about the menu. We got an appetizer, soup (beer cheese GHOST PEPPER! AMAZING!) two of us ordered a brunch item and one went with lunch. All of the food was delicious and freshly prepared. Then, since it was our day off, we got shots. Shots of Jameson were 3.00. $3.00! In the end, our bill was still ridiculously cheap, so we gave Jane a fat tip, and swore we'd be back. Until next time, Anvil Pub and Grille! Can't wait!

Sister raved about this place...really disappointed with food.. Server okay nothing special. Very cute location and decor plus the patio was great. Food not great. Even my sister that raved about this place was disappointed with her burrito. We got burgers that were cold. Blexh. Might try again.
