Adorable diner with a pretty good sausage and cheese omelet at a decent price. I will definitely go back!

The Golden Glow suffers from self-misidentification. It is a diner and malt shop, not a cafe and ice cream parlor (unless you're thinking of ice-cream parlor in the 1950s sense). You want an old-fashioned milkshake, brought to your table with the frosted metal tube from the malt maker? You got it. You want a sandwich loaded with pork and sauerkraut? It's delicious. Like any good diner, you have to have good instincts. Get the toast, and you'll often get home-made jam. Get a salad? Now we're getting into edgy territory. The Golden Glow has been a family-run joint for decades, and you can feel it in the decorations and the way locals hang out and drink coffee at the bar for hours. Not everything is spot on (the hashbrowns are a bit soggy for my taste), and they only accept cash or local cheque (can you blame them, really?), so they don't get five stars, but they do have my heart.

It is what it is. One block away, can't complain! It is not an ice cream parlor (looks are deceiving). It IS rarely busy and usually quiet (good place for homework). Just order breakfast food (served all day). Notice that yelp user Jennifer G only gives bad reviews...

Very typical 50th style diner with chrome chairs and original blenders. Everyone knows everyone and are very friendly to tourists. My 5 year olds completely enjoyed their fruit pancakes and I got my eggs over easy and wheat toast. Quick, inexpansive, and very charming. Kids got to drink from cow cups :)

Right downtown near the corner of Main st. and 6th st. Okay it's not about the food but the genre. ( 5 stars for being a real period piece ) This place is not 60's or 70's fake retro, it IS retro! All the way including the normal patrons. Probably workers or their kids add there own knit decorations from the ceiling, a cute addition. Ate breakfast twice on a long weekend and several times before on visits to Ashland previously. Has it ever changed? Well except for the vinyl seat coverings which were recently upgraded the whole place is still B.N. ( Before Naugahyde ). Yes the locals DO go here and probably do have roast beef and mash potatoes for lunch or dinner, but I was there for breakfast, plain and simple. 2 eggs over easy, hash browns, sausage links, english muffin and OJ. Yumm, nothing fancy. Inside the place looks very deep off the street and they probably leave the back third lights out unless there is some kind of function at the place. Every thing is here from the 60's and 70's minus the new gen 60's hippies, now aging greens with grey hair, ahemmm. While enjoying a tasty breakfast, tourist which we were, usually ends up at the Golden Glow Cafe by accident. I noticed this as we were privy to a neighboring bunch of local guys that had come in to town for their morning constitutional treating us to overheard stories about all the great slaughtering of animals they had witnessed over the years, real back in the day stuff for them. Ever try to eat breakfast links while hearing about some botched up hog slaughtering operation, nuff details, ok? Point is the locals do call this place home. Prices are very OK for portions and quick service. The Golden Glow has an ice cream bar with all the soda fountain gear and dairy bar like look. From the cool air conditioned feel and even more Hwy 2 ( route 66 ? ) decor this place is a sight to see if your wondering what it was like to eat and travel 40-50 years ago. Don't miss it, you might think that when you walk through that front door that you just exited Dr. Who's tardis police box door.

If I could give this place zero stars, I seriously would. I can easily say it is the worst restaurant I have ever been too. We stopped here on our way through Ashland for lunch. I ordered the chicken sandwich and it came covered in a really weird sauce that tasted a lot like tartar sauce. I tried scraping it off, but I could still taste it on the bun. I asked the server if I could have a new bun, and she took my sandwich into the kitchen. She came back out and said that the cook told her to tell me that there was no way that there had been any sauce on the sandwich. What?!?! The sauce was right there on my plate. I finally got a new bun, and turns out the chicken tasted terrible as well. I doubt they have ever cleaned their grill. Then to top off the visit, we could hear the cooks loudly saying obscenities about me in the kitchen! Will not be going back and I advise you check out a different restaurant.

It's supposed to be an ice cream parlor, but they only had 4 flavors the day we went in. No one else was in there at the time. Kinda spooky.

We were hoping for a simple breakfast place while passing through Ashland on the way home and we found this large, well-lit diner on Main Street, just a few blocks from the highway. Long white counter, humorless (at least to strangers) waitresses and more than a few groups of old men - classic right down to the glittery red vinyl on the booths! Our meals cost a little more than I expected for such an old-school joint with food that leans a little low on the average scale, but then I'm an optimist when it comes to old-school joints!
