My fiance and I recently stayed here for 2 nights while we were in town for a wedding in Washburn. I booked the room months ago through hotels.com because it was a "pay when you stay" room and the entire area was booking up with summer travelers. We paid $80 a night while some of our friends were paying $115+ elsewhere. We checked in around 5pm on Friday. They sell a lot of beef jerky in the lobby which amused me greatly for some reason. They also have Starbucks coffee in the lobby. The service was friendly. We had a second floor room. There aren't any elevators, just fyi. We didn't have much luggage so it wasn't a problem. The rooms have two doors. One to the hallway/stairs - and another one on the balcony side that faces the lake. If you're on the 2nd floor, you have a pretty decent view, down on the ground, not so much. I will say, you can hear every word that's being said outside of your room if people are out on the balcony area. I was worried it would be an issue but quite frankly, we weren't in the room much and we were so tired from our 14 hour drive that we didn't even notice any noise. The toilet and shower are separate from the vanity area which is nice because we were able to get ready quicker that way. The room is very basic. We had a king size bed, there was a dresser with a TV and a desk with a rolly chair. There was a small fridge and a microwave. The AC worked great. They have a hair dryer and iron/ironing board. I did notice some cobwebs in the corners and some remnants from bugs that had been squished against the walls. The parking lot fills up quickly in the evenings. Quite frankly, we had a decent stay here. I would stay again if I need a place for a night or two. I wouldn't make it my go-to location if I was staying for a week. But, it was convenient and priced well for us. Washburn was about 15 minutes, Bayfield was about 20 minutes from the hotel. We checked out around 4:30AM on Sunday and there was fresh coffee in the dispenser and there was a really friendly guy who wanted to chat in the lobby. It was a great weekend. I wish we could have stayed another day!

Ho Hum. I booked here at the last minute to visit the Apostle Island ice caves. Front desk staff were fine, no complaints, but the room fell short. It was very basic: king bed, microwave, TV, and mini fridge. No wireless in the room. I had two primary objections. First, the walls were so thin I could hear the TV and conversations from adjacent rooms, doors closing, and toilets flushing. Second, the room was so heavily perfumed that I wondered what foul odor they were trying to mask. Had someone been smoking in it?--or maybe something worse. Honestly, I was reminded of that sickly-sweet stuff the janitor at my elementary school used when some kid threw up in the classroom. The lodge is a mile or two outside of downtown, so if you want to stroll the main street, you would have to drive there first. This place was OK for a night but I probably would look elsewhere if I wanted to visit Ashland again.

I was appalled and disheartened about the complete lack of customer service from the Ashland Lake Superior Lodge staff. I recently called in order to secure a room during the weekend of the Whistle Stop Marathon... The staff told me that they had availability but would only rent for a "two night minimum". When I asked if I could pay a higher rate in order to secure a room for only one evening, the associate stated that I would have to speak to a manager and that he/she wasn't available. I left my name and number for a followup the following morning. This course of action was repeated twice. Both times, I never received a phone call back. This evening, I called a third time and asked if they had any availabilities. The associate said they did but they had a "two night minimum". I stated that I was aware of their policy and wished to speak to a manager. She said she would transfer me immediately. I thanked her for her help and willingness to work with me. She then hung up. Confused, I called back and asked why she hung up on me. She responded that the manager wasn't there anymore and she wasn't sure what to do. Unbelievable. Collectively, the Lodge's lack of phone etiquette and capacity to conduct customer followup is disappointing. I will never attempt to run the Marathon in Ashland or attempt to stay at the Ashland Lake Superior Lodge again.

We were here last weekend for the Book Across the Bay ski race. Loved the hotel room, the breakfast, the free coffee in the lobby, the pool area, and the staff. Looks like we loved it all. The friendly staff especially were great as we were having car troubles before we left. They made sure that we were set to go and were great about everything. Next time we come back to Ashland we know exactly where we'll be staying.

This place looks pretty cool from the road. Once you get inside, that is another story. The lobby smells like old feet. The place says it was renovated in 2006. Apparently they were going for the vintage look, because everything in this place screams old. There is no in-room WiFi. Calling that closet with a treadmill and elliptical a fitness center is a joke. Apparently, brand-new treadmill has a belt that slips. So make sure to keep it below 3 MPH. Otherwise, you may experience a wipeout. View is decent at best. No elevators. If you have any luggage request a ground-floor room. Do yourself a favor. Drive a few miles further and stay in town. For the rates you pay, there are much better options.
