I'm a devoted bagel fan, and when I went to search for some of Seattle's best bagel joints, I expected I'd come across an overwhelming and wide-spread selection. Much to my disappointment, this isn't the case here in Seattle. This is madness, a rainy city like Seattle should be overpopulated with bagel shops... So instead of making a quick stop at what I hoped would be a very tasty and very local bagel shop, I decided to do a bit of exploring in West Seattle and opted to try one of the highest rated bagel shops around, Zatz a Better Bagel. I ordered the Superseeded (great name) bagel with the spinach/dill "schmear" and it tasted great! It was toasted perfectly, and the schmear was tasty- just the right amount of spinach and dill. They put a bit much of the schmear on, but it wasn't too overwhelming like other bagel experiences I've had. Though the meal was tasty, I don't think I'll be back. They charged me nearly $5 for the toasted bagel with topping I ordered. I looked at the menu in puzzlement and realized that they must charge separately for bagel, topping, toasting, and cutting. It was a nice treat for a cloudy day, but I'll continue the bagel hunt closer to home. There's got to be a gem of a bagel shop nearby that no one is spilling the beans about... The bagel hunt continues.

While a Zatz bagel pales in comparison to the great northeastern bagel found in lowly A&Ps throughout Westchester county, it is not an entirely unfortunate nosh. Because of this---and because Zatz has a virtual monopoly on the Westie bagel scene---I keep going back. In fact, I'd recommend Zatz to anyone with a bagel jones acute enough to be eased by a degraded specimen. A Zatz bagel is literally pale and a bit doughy, even when toasted. It is also blandish, perhaps suffering from Seattle water or a lack of malt, or a lack of boiling. On the up side, it is available in many varieties, including some exotic flavors. And it has a goodly complement of lox and schmears. Service at Zatz is variable. In my experience, it's ranged from chipper, but slow, to surly, but efficient. Others have surely had more positive experiences, however, since Zatz seems to serve a population of regulars.

In a recent discussion of the best bagel places in the city, Zatz came up as one of the contenders. Initially interested, I looked it up and saw it was in West Seattle. That's worlds away for most of us living in the rest of the city. "You might as well tell me they make great waffles in Bhutan", I sneered. But then this funny thing happened: I found myself in West Seattle on business and I passed by Zatz on my way back to the mainland...... It's a nice little bagel shop with four small tables spread across the front windows as well as a small counter with chairs facing the window. There's a fairly wide variety of bagels available (I rather liked the idea of the chocolate chip bagel) as well as some extras (e.g. peanut butter on bagels). Although a true bagophile would scoff, I went for the bagel breakfast sandwich: the scrambagel with pepper jack cheese and ham. Combined with a latte, this was a pretty nice breakfast meal. For the record, they serve Café Vita coffee here. The shop is a bit loud because it is narrow; although the tables are next to the window, they are also fairly close to the counter. As a word to the wise, they do have a parking lot in the back (so that you don't have to park 5 blocks away, as I did).

As a Jew who was raised on bagels every Saturday morning for the first 18 years of my life, I was so excited to try out this place in West Seattle. It's small and cute and the workers are friendly. But why do you go to a bagel shop- to get a bagel. And lo and behold, Meh- the chocolate chip bagel wasn't the best I've ever had. Yes it was soft and yes it was of good size, but it didn't have much flavor. The free coffee with bagel purchase was pretty awesome though. Before I judge too harshly, I'll need to go again and try a different flavor bagel.

Love 'em! Best bagels on the planet. Sweet laid back staff. Excuse me, I'm off for a *million* mile run to work off the dozen I ingested over last week.....

Nothing soaks up remnant intoxicants like a Zats bagel. They are a magical cure for hangovers! I walked in with a pounding headache and queasy stomach one morning, ate a doughy ring of deliciousness, and left feeling 100%. No aspirin. No water. Just a bagel from Zats, and boom: I'm all better. It wasn't hard to convince me that these bagels have some kind of supernatural healing power. Obviously, I'm a fan of the bagels. They taste amazing and pull an abracadabra on that awful feeling that hits after a night of binge drinking. And it doesn't hurt that I can admire the cute guy behind the counter while I scarf my food down -- bagel for the tummy, candy for the eyes. I love you, Bagel Boy!

I used to live in the West Seattle area and if your over here and get a bagel craving Zatz is a good place to stop in. They have a pretty decent assortment of different flavors of bagels. I like the pesto bagel! Yum! They have different types of toppings you can either have on the bagel or you can get it on the side. Good ol' cream cheese is my favorite! They also have soup and different bagel sandwiches. I have never tried a bagel sandwich here before. The staff is nice and pleasant and I have never had to wait too long for my bagel. They have limited seating, so take it to go and drive down to Alki and eat the bagel! enjoy!

Variety of bagels, always fresh, rotating cream cheese of the month. The coffee is good. The only negative thing is the extremely slow counter girl who now opens most mornings. She's a little faster now that she's been there for some time by my goodness she needs to learn how to multi-task!

Bagel to Get: Super Seed (unless there is an allergy) Bagel Sandwich to Get: Turkey with everything on it! I am not a bagel connoisseur, but this place has kept me coming back for years. The place is cheap, fast and healthy! I am aware the ownership recently changed hands . . . I am pleased to report that is the only thing that changed! 5 Stars!

I dig this place just because there's a real shortage of bagel place options in west seattle or even seattle for that matter. I always judge a store by how their jalapeno bagles are and I gotta say they make a tasty one. I also like the onion, choc chip and their homemade cream cheeses (the best part). I need to get a sandwich next time I'm in, they looked good!

After working in West Seattle for 4 years, I thought I had discovered almost every lunchtime eatery available. But seemingly out of nowhere (even thought hey have been here forever) up pops Zatz! Just the smell of Bagel wafting out the open front doors should be enough to encourage a look, but you will be fully captured by the breakfast bagel, or the Salmon & Lox. I haven't tried the Challah yet, but I have heard truly amazing reviews on it. With a friendly staff, and well made sandwiches (or as I like to call them; bagel heaven) they guarantee a return trip. I always head to Zatz when I'm in the mood for a little indulgence and a tasty lunchtime treat.

Okay, so admittedly, these aren't the best bagels I've ever had. That's probably why they call it "better bagel" instead of "best bagel." However, they do have a great selection of flavors, in bagels and in cream cheese or "schmeer." Their coffee, iced tea, and cookies are also good. The staff here is usually very friendly and helpful. I'd give this place 4 stars, however, there is one woman who is kind of a snarky biatch (she's 30-ish, heavy set with short blond hair, beware)...so if you can avoid her and get someone else, you'll appreciate it. However, I must say, even when she's nearby, she seems to be complaining or repremanding the other staff while they're trying to get your food ready. In any case, there is parking behind Zatz. It says its for Wells Fargo, but I park there anyway...since Wells Fargo usually has a single person using their bank at any given time. Give it try, I think you'll like it.

I have to admit, I'm intrigued by the orange creamsicle schmeer. Orange creamsicles can be recorded in the history books as one of the Greatest Food Pairings of All Time, right behind peanut butter and chocolate. Next time I go to Zatz, I'm gonna try it. Their bagel sandwiches are great. I was very impressed with their tomatoes, of all things. These are not the mealy pink things you flick off your Subway. They are delicious! The bagels themselves are decent, but nothing to write home about. Prices are high. Two sandwiches set me back over 15 bucks. Ouch!

  • Jeff S.

I like this place. The staff is friendly, the bagels are fresh and soft and the homemade spreads terrific! Of course, I am not a bagel snob (wouldn't probably know the difference between steamed, boiled, fried or grilled bagels like other reviewers). I just know I like these bagels and the fact that it is in my neighborhood is a big plus. I usually only hit it early on a Saturday or Sunday morning...the carbs are not allowed more often than that, but for the most part, the staff is friendly and move the line pretty quickly.

The bagels aren't the worst you'll find in Seattle and certainly not the best. What bothered me was the woman changing her baby's diaper on the seated area of the booth. Then, placing it in one of the trays in which the bagels are served before throwing it in the trash. When i approached the woman about her actions I was met with a bewildered reaction from the Zatz staff. Has the staff not been trained in sanitation? (booth AND trays!). Needless to say, I now only order "to go", thereby by passing the eat in trays. Yuck.

I love this place. I love bagels and the fact that they offer sourdough is just great. I also like to get the asiago bagel, which my sister (megan s.) calls the funion bagel. It is good and a little oniony which I like. They also have a good iced tea which is hard to find around town. Oh and my sister thought it was pronounced zotz like those sour fizzy candies. Ha ha ha, what an idiot.

I've been hitting up Zatz when I end up taking a bus to work rather than driving. I typically get a superseeded bagel with some cream cheese on there. The bagel tastes great and I get the bagel with cream cheese and a drip coffee for less than $5. Not bad for a quick breakfast. The gals who have been in there at the time of day I go seem friendly and efficient.

Zatz has the best bagels anywhere around West Seattle!! Their homemade cream cheeses are delicious too. It's one of my favorite places to go for lunch whether I'm alone or with someone else. I always get a jalepeno bagel with jalepeno cream cheese. YUMM!! I definitely recommend it! And always get it toasted, makes it ten times more delicious! :)

Hit Zatz up this morning after a hard night and a $50 bet gone good over at Talarico's Pizzeria. I had heard good things about this place and was looking forward to it. We got there, waited in line for a minute and it was my turn up to bat. First test: the greeting. "How ya doin?" She says, "fine, what do ya want?" Was hoping for her to ask me, but that's okay. Anyways, we figure out what I want, but she just never seemed to happy to be taking my order. Actually, the lady the came to help just after I took my order didn't seem to happy to be there in general and out of the both of them, I saw only one of them smile the entire time. Obviously I wasn't watching them the entire time, but knowing I would be at least writing about my time at Zatz, I might as well be a little more observant. Was the food good at least? Yeah! I liked it. I got a blueberry bagel, toasted with some cream cheese on it and I had no problems eating it at all. So I guess it passed the taste test. I'm not a BIG bagel eater, so honestly, if a person were to ask me to describe the difference between the Zatz bagel and say a safeway bagel, I might not be able to. But I know one that doesn't taste good. And I also know customer service that doesn't taste good.

The only reason I go to Zatz is because of its convenient location and my kids like the mini-bagels. Some of the staff, such as Brigette are nice and helpful, but others seem offended that they have to wait on you. I recently witnessed Conner giving a free bagel to a West Seattle High School hottie who he'd partied with the night before. I was next in line, but instead of waiting on me and my kids, he chatted her up and slipped her a free bagel. I'm also not happy with my egg bagel being microwaved, rather than fried on a grill. Since when is microwaving an acceptable cooking method in any restaurant? My third and final complaint is that the place is filthy. They wipe the tables, but not the benches, or windows, or walls. Even the floors seem perpetually dirty. Ever look into the lucite box in which the cash register sits? It's filthy!! What do I expect... it's West Seattle, you say? I expect better from Zatz a Better Bagel!

Service here is great. They are absolutely the best in terms of caring for their customers and taking care of orders promptly. The bagels are pretty good. As far as the Pacific Northwest goes, they are probably the best you can find. While this place would be sub-par by any Jew from New York, it certainly does a fair job for those in Seattle that are unwilling to buy a plane ticket to get a better one. My review of the coffee is through the taste buds of another... although she has been a barista for quite some time and takes pride in her coffee making abilities. As she puts it, the espresso-esk coffee (i.e. latte's, etc.), are not worth your money. Best advice: Buy your coffee elsewhere and bring it with you.

I expected more from this place than what I got. There are way too many options and it took every customer ahead of me at least 10 minutes to get through their order. Ok, I should have expected a line on a Saturday morning. The bagel I got tasted okay, that is the second star, but the reason for the low rating is that when I ordered tea the cup was filled way to high and I ended up spilling scalding hot water all over myself. Not a single employee stopped to help (I had pretty seriously burned myself) and was so embarrassed that I scooted my burned little butt out of there immediately. Sorry Zatz, I'm in the market for another bagel store.

I don't know of many places in this city where you can get such an inexpensive (under $6) and delicious breakfast. Although I am not a huge fan of bagels the pesto bagel toasted and spread with herbed shmeer may well change my opinion on the matter. The coffee is awesome (Caffe Vita I think) and reasonably priced. I think that I have found my new favorite inexpensive breakfast place in West Seattle! My only wish is that Zatz were open one hour earlier at 5:30 a.m. for those mornings that I am amongst the ranks of the undead.

While I am admittedly not a bagel aficionado, and I have only been here a few times, I can say that I really love their bagels and schmeers. The also serve Cafe Vita coffee, which I like. I have tried their breakfast sandwiches, and they rock.

  • Chris H.

If you are looking for a good bagel, this place isn't too bad. It doesn't hold a light to Noah's bagels though. Selection is pretty limited and their sandwiches are pretty overpriced. I went with a friend for lunch and 2 sandwiches with chips and a bottle of water was over $18. I had the Pesto cheese bagel, it wasnt bad but not good enough for me to go back.

I have heard and read anecdotes that claim that Zatz produces the best bagel in the city, or anywhere near it. For example, they have (or had) posted in their store a story about a woman who drives from Bellevue to get her bagels there ("I cross four bridges to get my bagels!" or some such crowing). Unfortunately, I was spoiled by an upbringing in the fertile crescent of bageldom and European ethnic foods in general, New Jersey. The bagels here are passable, but they're far from outstanding. For my taste, they're a touch too reminiscent of a roll to be considered an outstanding bagel. No, they're not overly bready and awful like some "bagels" are (I'm retching right now just thinking about these insults to bageliciousness), but they're missing that je ne sais quoi that elevates a bagel from good to An Event Direct From Heaven. I have been known to gluttonously consume three or four bagels in a single sitting when dealing with the genuine article--and yes, I end up seriously regretting it all day, but right then and there, it's so worth it, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. What do you mean, carb overload? I've never been tempted to engage in such gormandizing at Zatz. Mind you, I'm not saying that these are bad bagels. I'm just not going to rave about them, and will look forward to when I visit the northeast to satisfy my deepest bagel cravings. Their "scrambagels" (bagel and egg sandwich) are pretty good, although the eggs are microwaved--which isn't a bad thing in and of itself, but means that what you're getting is just eggs, without the oil or butter with which eggs are normally cooked on the stovetop. Sure, this renders a sandwich that is a touch less unhealthy, but I'm not ordering a scrambagel for health reasons. Choosing the right cheese from their robust selection of five or so cheeses helps, too--I like cheddar. If I were an omnivore, adding some pig would probably up the flavor quotient substantially. Now that I think about it, I think if they just sprinkled a little salt and pepper in the egg slurry before microwaving it, it'd help a bit. Even with all this said, the scrambagels don't fail to satisfy a breakfasty craving when I'm not in the position or the mood to be able to do the sit down brunch thing at a more full service establishment. I do enjoy their bagel melts (e.g., veggie melt, pizza melt), although a recent price bump has pushed these into the category of questionable value, at somewhere around $5-$6, which seems obnoxious to me for a bagel with a few things thrown on it and stuck in the oven. At those prices, Mr. Bagel Proprietor, you can assume that I don't see that tip jar. Though I'm sorry to read what Ronnie mentioned about the service, I have always received pretty friendly service here, and have been here enough to suspect that attitude is the exception, not the rule.

  • Kris C.

The bagels and schmeer is pretty good, but stay away from the scrambagels. The variety is decent, but could stand to add a few new options to the menu for those that go in every weekend.

  • Me H.

Love, love, love their bagels and schmeers! Their asiago bagels are my favorites add a little chive schmeer and you have yourself one happy camper. If you like bagels I'm told these are the best around and I'd have to agree I've yet to find a better bagel in all of Seattle.

I am a bagel snob, and I'm lukewarm about Zatz. I keep coming because it is in my neighborhood and it is a local company. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to make bagels for a living, but I'm sure glad someone does it. I do, however, take offense to the ridiculous spreads and strange bagel assortments. If you are not a bagel snob, you may want to indulge. The service here can be painfully slow, depending on who serves you. There are some regulars who are speedy, and friendly. I'll keep coming back - to support my local bagel shop!

There are two types of bagel's - good bagels and the kind they sell at Noah's. Zatz in West Seattle is a nice place with good people that sells (*sigh*) Noah's style bagels. These are the bagels that are basically fluffy white bread masquerading as a bagel. Ten, fifteen years ago in Seattle you could get GREAT bagels at a variety of different bagel shops but sadly this is no more. If you yearn for dense bagels with a real crust then try the bagels at the PCC. I believe they sell bagels from Seattle Bakery. Zatz does get credit for being local and perhaps a tad better than Noah's (just a tad).

DISCLAIMER: This review is based purely on the bagels. The customer service was just fine and dandy. I came in to review the bagels after a friend's bf (a supposed NYer said these were the best) These are CRAP! Forget steaming them you gotta boil them!!! Doesn't anyone in Seattle know how to make a decent bagel? I'm not fooled by your pseudo Jewish-New York sounding same either.

Love their bagels. This is a great neighborhood asset. Their assiago babels are the best, as are the blueberry and chocolate chip. I ate here every week... until I realized I had put on 10 pounds. Love them.

Keeping the 4-star rating, but I don't think anyone is pleased with prices going up by around a buck on just about everything in March. There's a long, typed note by the cash register explaining the price increases (tied to minimum wage increases?) and making a reference to retraining staff. Hats off to the place for being honest and upfront with customers. Free coffee with greater than $3.50 purchase before 11. Sometimes offered, and sometimes you need to ask. Highly recommend.

I wanted to like this place. I really did. I mean, I'm a Jersey Boy. All I want out of life is a good bagel and a good slice of pizza. I had high hopes that this would solve the first need. Unfortunately, it didn't. The thing about a good bagel is it should almost fight back. It should be a bit dense. it should have a good chew. You should have to clinch down with your teeth and pull the bagel back with your hands to take a bite. And these bagels lack all of that. They're too fluffy, too airy, too light. And they also lack flavor. The everything bagel lacks punch. Very disappointed.

Came here for a late breakfast and there was no line. Nice variety of bagels, bagel sandwiches, bagel dogs and more bagels. We got a pumpernickel with lox spread and a pesto bagel with almond spread. Both bagels were delicious, nice and soft on the inside, nice crust on the outside and freshly made. The spreads were pretty good too. No issues with the food. Service was a bit strange, young gentleman seemed a little spacey, he asked us like 3 times what we ordered again. Uhhh.....you have the bagel we've chosen in your hand. Kind of funny but whatever. As others have mentioned, its pretty expensive. 2 bagels with flavored spread was over $11. We didnt get any coffee, juices nor anything else. Great little neighborhood, I didnt have to fuss with parking as we just walked but its street parking or park on the side streets kind of action.

I love this bagel shop. It's close to where I live so I sometimes get to splurge on their delicious bagels and I'm never disappointed. I always get the onion or garlic bagel with flavored cream cheese (shmeer) They are always fresh, great variety and I enjoyed their customer service. They also offer free coffee with purchase until 11am. so if your an early riser this is the perfect breakfast stop. The only downside is that for me the shmeer is a bit thick so I ask for light cream cheese. I definitely recommend this!!

I'm with those who contend that this is not the New York-style bagel I was hoping for. More like a soft bread baked in the shape of a donut. On the other hand, the staff were quick, efficient and friendly.

Oy Vey! Zatz has the best bagels in town.. Forget about New York bagels, because this West Seattle hot spot is giving the east coasters a run for there cream cheese & locks! Now my favorite is the sesame seed, doubled toasted with BUTTER! So darn good. Don't be a meshugana get in line now!

Stopped in twice for lunch and was impressed both times. Reasonably priced and some of the best bagels I've ever had. Limited lunch menu online, but they have a daily specials board with many more options. I had the hot smoked salmon sandwich with capers and the Reuben daily special. Both were outstanding.

Ok, this is a 3-Strikes-You're-Out situation for us. We won't be going back. I hate to say that, because we love to support our local businesses -- and we LOVE BAGELS! 1. The service is exceedingly slow. Their process is incredibly inefficient, which results in quick-to-grow lines and long wait times. 2. It seems they have a hard time with drink orders. Our drink orders have never been made correctly. The "hot" vanilla latte took them so long to make, even after waiting awhile and finally eating, we had finished our bagels before they served a cool latte, with no flavoring - though when I pointed it out, they offered to pour some vanilla syrup on top. 3. The final straw was this last time. We got our bagels to go -to a nearby coffee shop. When I bit into my toasted blueberry bagel with cream cheese, it tasted -- horrible. I could hardly swallow it, even though I was trying to smile through it. My husband was watching my face and took a bite - and immediately spit it out. It tasted like a bottle of perfume. I don't know what those "blueberries" were, but they definitely were nowhere near fresh/frozen/edible. I ended up having to re-buy my breakfast, just eating something out of the pastry case at the coffee shop - (and it was delicious). So why 2 stars instead of 1? My husband's breakfast sandwich was edible. Not delicious, but "ok" - and not worth returning for. Sad! We would really REALLY love a yummy bagel shop around here!

Oh I might not be from a long line of bagelists but I am from New York and I know a smear from a smuck. A smorgasbord of bagels. I had a fantastic sun dried tomato bagel with lox. The fresh bagel was chewy and of substance, the lox was perfect and smokey with good capers. Skip the chains and roll up here.

Got the turkey bacon cheddar on Italian gourmet bagel. Delicious and can't be better. Only downside is they forgot to make my coffee and the service was slow to get my bagel. Other than that, it's a cute bagel shop for a quick bite in the junction!

  • Frances G.

Zatz right! That is a better bagel. This place is stocked to the ceiling with every bagel imaginable. But the best part were the variations on the Lox and Bagel. Accustomed to just the one Lox And Bagel with smoked salmon, capers, onions, and all the best fixings, this spot had not two, but three salmon choices. Wild Sockeye Lox, Atlantic Lox, and Wild Hot-Smoked King. I died and went Lox heaven. The salmon was fresh and delicious and perfectly paired with the right portion of cream cheese and onion. If only I lived in Seattle on the coast where the lox is ludacrisly good. But I suppose what Denver may lack in the lox department is made up for in so many more awesome things :)

I don't know how people can be such bagel snobs and NOT like Zatz bagels! We usually buy Safeway but tried Zatz by recommendation of friends, and they are divine. We each had toasted everything bagels with chive cream cheese, got two doggie donuts for our pooch, and got a free cup of delicious coffee. The staff welcomed us upon arrival, and we were in and out in 3 minutes, so I'm not sure where all the negative customer service reviews are coming from... As a West Seattle frequent visitor, I know I'll be coming back to Zatz!

  • Munk M.

I used to frequent Zatz quite often a few years ago, so when I visited West Seattle one cold and damp day, I was looking forward to my memory of Zats. The friendly service was still there, and the cozy small-town vibe with warm customers greeting each other and wishing happy holidays, brought a smile. And they had pumpernickel, so I ordered a scram-bagel with eager anticipation. Unfortunately what I received was a microwaved too-soft scram-bagel served in a plastic basket. What I'd anticipated was a delicious toasted bagel with my egg & green onions with cheddar. Meh, soggy. So either they've changed how they make scram-bagels or they've never really been "better". Maybe I could have specifically requested "toasted" but they should offer the customer the option between that or microwaved. Besides, why would you ever microwave a bagel except to save time? Certainly not for flavor or consistency, nor respect for the bagel. The other problem on this cold and damp day was their inability to make a real coffee. In Seattle. Their espresso machine was broken. No latte. No cappuccino. Only drip. Really? And I'm supposed to be happy that it's free with my order? No. Maybe that was just an unlucky break for me or maybe this place needs a revitalizing and full review of their workflow for being a better bagel shop -- including, removing the years-old plastic string-light clips that weren't holding any lights and just made the window look tacky.

Pumpernickel bagel + hummus + tomato + lettuce = $6.59 plus tax The lettuce and tomato are fresh so, there's that. The hummus is advertised as a "storemade blend" and that I find highly dubious. Fresh hummus tastes a lot brighter than the spread on my bagel, and I do not believe the store roasts their own garlic. Finding good pumpernickel in Seattle is not easy. The pumpernickel bagel here is okay. Not great or better, just okay. My sandwich came with the saddest pickle I have ever seen. How this meal equals $6.59 plus tax is anyone's guess. Let me close with an observation of the staff: all young women. Nice but some are very green when it comes to food service. One woman is behind the counter tapping away on her smartphone; another woman is exchanging flirty banter with a guy instead of telling him, "Hey, I get off at _____, let's talk then." I really wanted to like this place but Zatz leaves a lot to be desired.

Not that great. Given the hype I expected more, but ended up paying way more. Might as well go to Safeway and make your own sandwich.

I went here on a whim one day when I was craving a bagel. I noticed these guys had a coupon on Yelp, so I thought why not? The place was nice and toasty when I arrived and the two people working there were very helpful and friendly. I think the cashier was training that day, but regardless, he was very kind and helpful. I ordered the veggie bagel on an everything bagel. It was SO GOOD! It took me straight back to when my mother and I used to get bagels at the bagel shop when I was a kid. DELICIOUS!

I love Yelp!! The reviews are so helpful in helping me make an educated decision on where to spend my dollars! I frequent Zatzs often and I decided to read their reviews as I was enjoying my bagel with cream cheese along with a cup of coffee! I enjoyed reading a two star review because, in part, the front door was hard to open. Oh my gosh!! Stop Freakin, Call Beacon!! Demand a free breakfast! How dare they!!! How about the 2 star lady who flipped out because their latte machine was broken! What self respecting restaurant would not have a spare latte machine, micro oven, toaster and refrigerator so this poor lady would not be inconvenienced. Or what pity should we shower upon the 3 star Yelper who discovered when she got home that she was missing her pickles!! I sincerely hope that she still had her anti anxiety meds! Don't get me wrong, I love pickles. I guess I just don't believe in conspiracy theories to believe that they deliberately withheld her pickles! Oh, I almost forgot! If you are looking for a great local bagel joint with a wide variety ( I love the multi seed), then you can't go wrong with Zatzs! Unfortunately, Yelp is the place to let everyone know how important you are and to let everyone complain about everyday life! Yes, things break, employees makes mistakes, computers go down! Me, just enjoying my bagel and coffee, watching the customers and counting how few of them are showing their smiles. Remember, the smile you give is equal to the smile you get! PS.Don't forget to pull hard on the front door, it is a little tight!!

The bagels are pretty bready and microwave bacon doesn't do too much for the overall sandwich, but it wasn't inedible. The service was serviceable. Overall, a perfectly average experience.

It was my first time here and I called an order for pick up. I got the BLT and it was amazing. The worker there told me I would enjoy it and would be back and she was right. My boyfriend got the pizza melt and he loved it. We will be back for sure to try other options on the menu.

I've lived in West Seattle for about 6 years and I absolutely love Zats. However, this morning's experience has me questioning if I'll make it a morning stop anymore. My husband and I walked in hoping to get a quick breakfast before running to work. There was only one other person there, with a few orders still being processed by the employee behind the counter (young looking, black-haired guy) who was spending more time chatting than actually moving things along. After nearly ten minutes of waiting, very little actually done on the line, and not even getting a "Hi," we left, not wanting to risk being late or continue to be ignored. The last time we were served by him, we received similar apathetic service and my husband's bagel had much less lox schmeer than we normally get. Three stars due to previous exemplary food and service from pretty much all other employees we've encountered. But I'm not going to spend time and money in the morning only to be brushed off by someone who does not seem to understand customer service.

Slowest. Service. Ever. Seriously, I love Seattle for having so many mom and pop places so we can avoid big box chains. And I really want to support my neighborhood locals, but this place is soooo slow. Every time I go in it is like watching someone who has never made a bagel order to go. It is truly a painful experience. Why they don't have one person working the register with a number system and a few preparing the food is beyond me. They just walk in circles bumping into each other with absolutely no sense or care that you might not want to spend the time for a sit down breakfast just to get a bagel to go.

Only place in West Seattle with real bagels. All the other bagels are what I call "cargo cult" bagels. They look like bagels but they don't taste or munch like real bagels. I live south of Olympia but always stop for a dozen zatz bagels whenever I'm in the West Seattle area.

This is one of my client's favorite places to come. Annnnnnd now it's one of mine. They have bagels. Bagels on bagels on bagels. And schmears. Sourdough. Pizza. Chocolate chip. Pumpernickel. Wheat. Plain. Blueberry. Garlic. Salted. And there's still like 10 that I haven't named. They have bagels. To the left of the bagels is the schmear case, and the selection of those isn't too shabby, either. Their seasonal flavor right now? Pumpkin Pie. Yum! I like that you can enter from the front or the back... there's not always street parking, so it's nice to have the back lot option. The kicker? The guy behind the counter asked if we wanted any freezer bags. Who else gives those out? Awesome.

My twin sister and I wanted a bagel so we decided to go to the 3.5 star rated bagel place on yelp in hopes to give it a better star rating after we left. Whelp! That's not the case. First things first. The door was hard to open (Very heavy and annoying). We each got a bagel asking for the bagel to be double toasted which didn't happen. So the cream cheese bagel almost felt cold since it wasn't toasted well and the cream cheese was so cold. It was too cold in the restaurant and the tables were small and looked like three people had sat their already this morning And it wasn't cleaned. Something that we did like was the cream cheese to bagel ratio. It also smelled great when we walked in the door. Like pizza!

Deserving of zero stars this morning... Stood outside for 15 minutes past opening as three stoned teens fumbled about, apparently unable to comprehend how to unlock a door - one even had to hide in the corner, he was so high. If I were the manager/owner, I would be extremely embarrassed to have these people in my employ. Would have loved to try the bagels - they were somehow able to get a few trays out - but I guess it was not meant to be.

I used to live in West Seattle, and let me say that I don't claim to be a bagel expert. I'm aware that New York has some of the best bagels (never tried) but I love Zatz. I've been going here, basically my whole life, and the service has always been friendly and the bagels absolutely tasty. You can even see the bagel process from the side window. All I can say, is as a Seattleite, I'm proud of these bagels. :)

Service is good BUT the bagel was mediocre. I ordered the pumpernickel turkey sandwich and it had only 1 slice of turkey. C'Mon 1 slice of Turkey?. If I had wanted a veggie sandwich I would have ordered a veggie sandwich. This is 2&1/2 stars.

This place is such a disappointment. High prices for less than average food. $15 for two tuna bagel sandwiches with unripened tomatoes and no cheese is ridiculous! I asked for a simple favor like "can you please toast the bagel for that sandwich?" Sure! Do you think it got toasted? Nope. I even left a tip without getting a thanks. I'll head back to Metro market to get a much better sandwich next time and friendlier service.

Yummy East-coast-style bagels, by and far the best I've found in Seattle, not to mention so close to me (yay!)! They also make the BEST light cream cheese I've ever tasted. Get a couple of your favorite varieties to go!

These guys are OK, I mean, it's a bagel place. It's not some fancy new trendy twist on a bagel, there's not a line out the door... There's tons of types of bagels, I usually go for one of the premium pesto or "something infused" bagel. The schmears are OK. The sandwiches actually aren't that bad either.

On my way home back from Vashon, I headed to the Admiral District to try Zatz. I have to say that following Eltana as the next bagel place that I try is no treat. Eltana is a hard act to follow. Visited Zatz as I had bought a Dealpop coupon that was expiring, so I needed to redeem the goods. They have a nice selection of bagels. Many varieties including gourmet versions (with toppings), along with numerous schmears. They also sell sandwiches, bagel dogs and cookies. Picked up five bagels (Asiago cheese, sundried tomato, pesto, onion and garlic) which were $.99 each and a piece of mandelbrot ($1.25) which is a Yiddish biscotti. The verdict on these bagels are that they are good, but not great. Quite honestly, I like Safeway bagels better than these. They have a nice chewiness to them, but some of the flavor disappoint. Particularly the sundried tomato and pesto. The flavors of these bagels are quite faint to the point that you can barely taste the difference between them and a plain one. The bolder flavored bagels were the best of the ones I tried. The Asiago cheese is a crowd pleaser and the garlic one is so enjoyable that you could care less about getting stinky breath. As for the biscotti, I really liked it. Crunchy is its name. A great accompaniment to a coffee break or just on its own. I liked the bagels at Eltana better, but the ones here are not too shabby. I would say to try the ones that have more distinictive flavors because the ones that do not, taste quite plain.

I would like to give this place a better review but I consistently have problems here. My most recent trip I got home after buying a few lox sandwiches to find that the pickles I asked for were not in the bag. I've also taken issue with the inconsistent service and product I get. Not long ago I was home sick unable to eat for a few days and when I recovered all I wanted was a nice cream cheese and salmon sandwich. When I got home I found a thin layer of cream cheese on my sandwich and felt ripped off after spending that kind of money. The trip after that I got a thick layer of cream cheese on my bagel. I can just never tell what I'm going to get.

Zatz will give other local bagel shops a RUN for their money! Seriously, their bagels are excellent. And huge thanks to fellow Yelper Catherine F. for her stellar recommendation...gourmet pesto bagel with garlic herb cream cheese. AWESOME. Jalapeño bagel with jalapeño creme cheese was also good a day later. The only thing I don't recommend are their bagel-dogs. For those, they really can't compete with other more Blaz'in options, but still ... come on. Next time... I'll have to try their Ruben! ^_^ Also... no Discover here. :-/

Before I begin, let me just say at first I had this review at 3 stars but considering Seattle alternatives for bagels, I bumped this to a 4. I'd also like to say that I grew up in NY and have lived and tried bagels in every place that offers them, so my standards are very, very high (so much so that I've never, EVER had a NY-tasting bagel anywhere else). But I digress - we stopped here Saturday morning on the way to taking the pup for a stroll on Alki. Good stuff, the true test for any bagel is to get it non-toasted to see if the consistency is right. A good bagel will be soft through the middle - and remain that way for a few hours. Chewy = bad, see Noah's. Anyway, so we got three bagels - all non toasted with veggie cream cheese. I was moderately happy with the bagels, enough so that I'll go back, but the veggie cream cheese was just so-so. How hard is it to chop up a few carrots and throw them in? Sure there were some veggies in there but I don't want to have to look for them - I want to taste it. Overall the best bagels in Seattle, I'm just hoping we got a bad batch of the veggie cream cheese. For an ex-NY'er, this place was pretty good. Kudos Zatz!

The bagels here are delicious, especially the asiago. Although, their sandwiches are a bit overpriced. Nonetheless, great bagels!!

Parking is difficult. I had sesame bagel with lite smear... It took someone about 5 minutes to take my order and there was no ahead of me. I just don't like the feel of the place... I would rather go over to Mercer Island for Einstein bagels..at least they have plenty of space to park and seating indoors and outdoors.

I grew up in a Jewish household and I've lived on the East coast, so I am genuinely surprised by a couple of the negative comments. I'm wondering if people making negative posts are possibly used to corporate type stores, shops and restaurants where everything tastes the same and eating actual food tastes odd to them. These were WONDERFUL! The customer service was great and it reminded me of my favorite bagel shop when we lived back East. Coffee was delicious and the service was fantastic, casual and fun. I will be back again and again!

If I didn't love bread and carbs so much, maybe I wouldn't have to run so much. But I do, and I will. (Or... maybe I eat the carbs SO I can run so much? Who knows.) Anyways.. tangent.. so Zatz a Better Bagel, in the Admiral District, is a very cute place. It smells heavenly, of course. It's a bread shop, whaddya expect. They have a large variety of flavors (my favorites are Sesame Whole Wheat and Cinnamon Raisin), plus a bunch of spreads and sandwiches. My friend Bindu loves the Smoked Salmon sandwich on Tomato bagel. Also, love when they do samples.. except when the sample bagel is SALT! Yuck, why oh why is it always salt!? The only bad thing about this place is... well, the sandwiches are overpriced. For a slice of turkey and some condiments you're going to up the price of a bagel $5?? Ummm... no thanks, I'll make the sandwich myself. But yes, the bagels are delish. (Also, parking blows. There's about 3 spots on the street outside, but you can always go down the street and park at Metropolitan Market if you really wanted to... when I'm faced with a walk like that, though, I just U-Turn it and go home. Loser I know.)

This place has mediocre bagels and poor service. The girl working was either talking to another employee or a friend she had sitting on the ground behind the counter. She didn't acknowledge me when I walked in, and I felt like I was interrupting their conversation. There are better bagel joints in Seattle, so there is no need for me to revisit this one.

I think I was having a bad day when I went here. Everything was slightly off, but it was not them. The girl I ordered from was really nice, and ended up giving me a free bagel flier, since we had gotten off on the wrong foot. I will go back here when I am in the neighborhood.

Coming from the east coast, I was happy to see a local bagel shop. The bagel was average. I was disappointed they don't have an "everything" variety. The coffee they served me curdled the milk. Yuck.

Love Zatz! Ive been coming here for years and love the variety of bagels offered. The employees are always really nice and friendly. They do have an espresso machine despite some other reviews and the coffee is cafe vita, which is one of my favorites. They are a bit pricey, but it is about as much as you would spend on yourself at mcdonalds or starbucks for one bagel. Overall, this place is delicious and in a perfect location. Anytime I am craving a bagel, which happens quite often, Zatz is the place to go!

The bagels here are pretty mediocre and quite overpriced. I would describe these as 1 notch bellow Safeway bages right on par with QFC bagels (except they cost way more). The service is really slow and the the staff seems to be more interested in talking to each other than then actually serving a bagel, so expect to spend at least 5-10 minutes to get a basic bagel and cream cheese. Wouldn't recommend this place but it is located in a very convenient spot for someone on the go. This comic pretty much summarizes my experience here i.imgur.com/IQ7Ac.png

Noah's has long been a shining beacon for quality bagels in Seattle, but if you're lucky enough to live in the neighborhood of West Seattle, I submit for your approval: Zatz a Better Bagel, or Zatza for short. While their menu is rather extensive (they offer a different house soup daily, sandwiches, cookies and brownies, all made in-house, it's the bagels you come back for. They don't skimp on the size, either, so at $.50 and $1 for mini size and regular respectively, it's a deal. Be sure to try their gourmet bagels (I recommend the Fiesta) on for size as well. You may never leave West Seattle again.

I walked in yesterday bracing myself for all the terrible things Zatz is accused of, but my experience there was lovely! Granted, it was a Thursday noon and the place was nearly empty, but sometimes part of the experience is picking the right time to go. Anyway, my bf and I were greeted immediately upon entering, and the menu was explained to us when we mentioned it was our first visit there. I felt no pressure to pick right away, which is probably a result of the place not being crowded but still a nice thing to find. Ended up getting a BLT + a lox sandwich. The nice girl serving us let me sub an apple for chips in my combo, and when we were rung up for two drip coffees instead of two mochas (something I explained after payment), she cheerfully made us mochas anyway! And when I asked for that apple I wanted, she offered me two! She also washed and dried it off for me without me asking! Happy exclamation marks from a girl who's probably too easily impressed!! But it really was an example of A+ customer service in my opinion, for doing a lot of nice things that didn't really need to be done. I looooved the BLT. There was a very generous stack of bacon, fresh lettuce, and tomato slices. I got it on the pesto bagel, which really made the sandwich! What a yummy combo. The espresso is from Caffe Vita, and that too was also well done. We were given a sweet "thanks for coming in" as we were leaving, so I must say, perfect experience here all around; I could not have asked for anything better. It is admittedly a little pricey in comparison to other bagel places, but the quality of the bagels and the generous sandwiches totally justifies the price imo. I'm a little worried that the loveliness was from all the bagel-stars lining up perfectly in the bagel-cosmos yesterday, and that I might just run into an instance of horrible customer service one day when I visit again... but as it stands, Zatz is now my favorite place for bagels.

OK - let me start out by saying that if this were a review on their menu alone, it would be 5 stars. HOWEVER, I've had to stop going to Zatz because their customer service is so terrible and inefficient. Not every single employee, but the majority of them have no customer service skills whatsoever and are quite unprofessional. I don't consider myself a snob, but I would love to be acknowledged when I walk into a food service establishment and there are 2-4 employees behind the counter and I'm the only one in there. One time in particular, I wasn't acknowledged for a full minute and a half while the kids gossiped. Another thing Zatz management could attend to: The inefficient ordering/order execution process. On the weekend mornings, there are between 4-7 employees behind the counter each serving one customer at a time, preparing their order, and then ringing them up. They are each in the others way, and unprofessionally talking about their personal lives while they are preparing the food. My suggestion: create an assembly line! One to two employees taking orders, one cutting bagels and tossing in the toaster, one spreading the cheese/adding toppings/etc, one ringing up the patrons. Zatz, I LOVE your bagels - they are the very best in all of Seattle, but please train and manage your employees better. It's such an unpleasant experience that you've lost me as a customer :(

Ha- gotta agree with Joe O. whole-heartedly. In fact, I was talking with my wife about why can't there be any good bagels outside of NY? Is it something in the water? The air? I dunno. But, I had to give Zatz a shot- and it was well worth it. Got the litmus of plain and sesame and tried them right out of the bag. Good soft center and just the right amount of crisp on the outside. Needless to say I was happy...truly the best I've tried in Seattle, or anywhere else for that matter outside of NYC.

To say I LOVE the cranberry orange bagels fresh out of the oven is an understatement. I rarely venture onto any others and when they're out I'm seriously bummed. Most of the employees are cool. Sometimes the services can get disorganized (too many cooks in the kitchen type of thing). Sometimes the music is ridiculously loud, garage, and not conducive to dining in at all. That one can get an Americano with their cranberry orange bagel is really neat. Good place to satisfy yourself while using the wash house next door.

I'm part of a captive audience. My childhood was regularly punctuated by Saturday brunch at the homes of my father's Jewish colleagues, which meant rabid discussions about politics and amazing food: knishes, lox, warm bagels, kishke, potato pancakes, brisket, and blintzs. Fresh bagels became a staple of my diet. After we left Chicago for life in a ski town in the mountains of Colorado, we were cut off from all things urban. There were no fresh bagels; I was limited to the tough grocery store variety. Then we moved to Seattle and heard about Zatz a Better Bagel. We lost no time in going. I was so excited that we were there at 6:30 am when they opened. The smell of baking was wafting through the little storefront. The doors opened, and I stood staring at the selection of bagels, transfixed. There were so many kinds: plain, salt, garlic, onion, poppyseed, sesame, superseed, whole wheat, pumpernickel, sourdough, asiago cheese, pesto, jalapeno, and even blueberry, cranberry orange and chocolate chip priced at 99 cents a piece or $9.95 for a baker's dozen (13). I couldn't decide so we got one of each (except the sweet ones). To me, a bagel has to have cream cheese and delis make their own version called schmeer. Zatz carries 3 varieties: plain, lite flavored, lite with lox bits, ranging in price from $3.70 to $5.95 for 8 oz. I did the math. Per pound, that was on the pricey side. As I scanned the menu, they also sold "bagels plus" (plus a topping like jam, honey, peanut butter or schmeer), bagel sandwiches, "scrambagels" (bagels with eggs) bagel dogs, and lox, I realized it was all on the pricey side. This was especially true of the lox. They had a strategy for making the pricing look more reasonable than it actually is; they list the lox prices by the quarter pound instead of by the pound. So, rather than saying the Atlantic salmon is $21.00 /lb (and send customers running for the door) they say it's $5.25 for 4 oz. Of course, it's the same thing but it avoids the knee-jerk "Say what?!?" reaction. They sell three types of lox: Atlantic salmon, wild sockeye, and wild King. All are fairly close in price. The bagels lived up to my expectations, they had a chewy crust and a firm texture. My favorite flavors were classic onion, pesto, and the asiago cheese. My husband was disappointed that they didn't have his favorite rye, but liked the asiago as well as the garlic. We got two schmeers, regular and lox bits. I was disappointed with the lox schmeer. In our Chicago deli, it was a viable substitute when you couldn't afford to buy a pound of lox. But Zatz's version skimps on the lox bits, so the taste of lox is too faint for me. Especially at $5.95 (or $11.90/lb) A better choice for us is to make our own schmeer. We buy the plain schmeer and a quarter pound of lox, and put part of it in the food processor, using the remainder of the lox on sandwiches. (If we're really being budget conscious, I buy cream cheese at the grocery store, let it soften on the counter top, and then throw it in the food processor with part of the lox.) We also each got the lox & bagel sandwich ($7.20-$7.70 depending on the type of lox you choose.) They certainly don't skimp on the lox here, but I didn't like the addition of lettuce, tomato and red onion, so the next time I had them hold it. Now that was the taste I had been nostalgic for! I go back to Zatz once a month to get my fix, more often if the budget allows it. But I am looking for a less costly fresh bagel alternative.

I really want to give Zatz a higher rating but I guess I am just too much of a bagel snob. Once you have had a truly good NYC bagel, it's hard to top. I got a dozen so I had a chance to give a few a try. I would have to say I like the Asiago Bagel the best (hubby and friend concur). The schmears aren't quite as zippy as I would like. I would definitely go here again when in need of a decent, non supermarket bagel, but Zatz isn't leaving me with bagel fantasies.

  • Catherine F.

You will not find a better bagel! Best bagels ever! Seriously. My family has been patronizing Zatz for years. The staff is friendly (with one exception) and efficient. The seasonal schmeers are delicious. Everything is delicious, really! I recommend the gourmet pesto bagel with garlic herb cream cheese. It will make your breath stink all day but believe me, it is worth it! The bagel dogs are also delicious, asiago being my favorite. My handsome husband loves the breakfast bagels. We will return, over and over again.

Zatz a good bagel! I always order the same thing at Zats and I'm never disappointed. There really aren't that many bagel places in the Seattle area, so if you're looking to find a winner give these guys a try.
