I really enjoyed being here! The atmosphere reminded me of a lounge you might see in the movies! We enjoyed a few tasty drinks and a few appetizers. They were all good! I would go back there.

An upscale, civilized bar in the W Hotel; an extra half-star for having a bartender who knows that a martini involves gin by definition ("vodka martini," bah!) and is best stirred, not shaken (take that, Fleming!) Only flaw is that it was not initially served in the traditional stemmed glass, though they switched when I raised an eyebrow at the solecism. Pleasant crowd, a mix of tourists and youngish locals. I ordered the poolgogi chicken tacos (can you say "fusion"? I knew you could!) at $9. Flour tortillas, barbecued chicken, hot red peppers, cilantro, and kimchee aioli. The combination worked very well.

Pros: Decor, location, and service were great. Bonus: The sushi rolls had real crab as standard. Most places require upcharge, or just don't have. Cons: Drinks and rolls are okay. Not bad, but don't live up to the atmosphere. Stick to beer or straight mixers. Double jeopardy: the Brussel sprouts were cooked to perfection and then seasoned to hell. It tasted like a ketchupy bbq sauce with spices that overpowered everything else. Recommendation: worth a try...just don't expect W quality with the style.

Food--delicious. Dessert--amazing. Service--so so. We were lucky enough to get $100 credit for our weekend stay at the W. Definitely a +++

Trace is the main restaurant attached to The W Hotel. During our stay at the hotel, we ate there for dinner and breakfast. The decor is modern to say the least. Add the lounge music, you feel like you are somewhere very trendy. You'll learn to enjoy the atmosphere because service is slow. I do not know if they are understaffed or if we had to share the kitchen with room service, but our dinner seating lasted 2 hours and breakfast 1 hour. Despite that, both our servers were professional, pleasant and checked on us several times. The wait was easily forgotten once the food arrived. The dishes were beautifully presented, and the food tasted even better. We had sushi for dinner, and the fish was very fresh. We would recommend the Emerald City and Northwest rolls. If you are sensitive to spicy like me, you can ask for the sauce on the side. Breakfast was my favorite. I had the Seattle Trace breakfast with salmon lox and eggs. Again, the food tasted very fresh. My husband had the American meal which included sausage from a local company. If you are a foodie and are willing to enjoy a long relaxing meal, then Trace is for you.

Came here for the first time with a friend for Dine Around Seattle's lunch option. The restaurant/lounge was pretty spacious and modern, and felt classy without the intimidating feel. Service was great; two/three people waited on us and regularly checked up on how we were doing. Their DAS lunch menu seemed like a good value, depending on what you order. I chose the pork miso ramen appetizer, pulled pork sandwich entree, and the opera cake for dessert! I was actually pretty surprised about the portion of the ramen. The noodles were nicely cooked, and I could actually taste the miso in the broth. Definitely my favorite of the three! The sandwich was okay, but the pork was on the dry side and not very flavorful. Dessert was pretty rich and sweet. My friend tried the stiebr farm organic fried egg entree, and I personally wouldn't recommend it. I didn't think it looked like it was worth the price --it was pretty much just an egg on some greens.

Trace is tucked behind the hotel bar and has a dramatic, if expected, contemporary design. Everyone in our group agreed that the food was delicious. And this is no small feat as we have so many picky and specific types in our group. Downside: service. Timing was way off. Some appetizers didn't arrive at the same time. Entrees bumped up against appetizers. Water glasses remained empty until several asks for more. Wine refills completely forgotten until the food was almost finished. This was, perhaps, because it was a holiday evening. However, no one took the time to explain or apologize for the subpar service. Rating would be higher if based on food alone. I would say definitely give it a chance but if service is poor again then Yelp it up!

The clams were truly unique and amazing, very delicious! In an herb-flavored sauce so good you have to stop it up with their delicious bread. Oysters are out of this world good too, fresh and topped off with sea spices (ogo seaweed) - genius. Colby was our waitress and she was friendly and awesome. Yay Trace!

I went to Trace for dine around seattle with a coworker and I was impressed with the food. First course was french onion soup woth beechers cheese. My friend complained there was not enough cheese however I thought it was the perfect amount. My entree was a pulled pork sandwich with fries. This was jands down one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I have ever eaten! There was an aioli on the buttered, toasted bun that was life changing. For dessert we both had the strawberry rhubarb pana cotta. This was good and reminded me a lot of yogurt. With restaurant week coming up, I may need to go back again soon!

the interior lobby area is really nice. they have a DJ booth up high. we were there for a good friend's fashion line launch. her stuff looked really nice. it turned out to be a great venue for us to see and catch up with a lot of friends we haven't seen in a while. wednesday evenings they apparently host this fashion party event. service was pretty good considering how chaotic it was in there. i really enjoyed the flatbread dish we got. it's basically an oblong pizza. all veggies on it. the brussels sprout dish was good enough, but for me if it had the traditional korean koh-chu-jang sauce, it would have been much better. the sauce they used was kindof a bastard of koh-chu-jang. not spicy. soda waters with lime were 3 bucks each.

Trace is this older W hotel's Living Room bar/lounge (and a restaurant), set a few feet below the main lobby. It has a separate street-level entrance. Nice staff, a substantial bar, with a few lounge tables. The Living Room has a variety of chairs, sofas, loungers, and a large gas fireplace. Definitely a nice place to bring a date to snuggle with. On two separate visits, there was a wide variety of clientele. Hotel guests relaxing with a drink, boys out on the town, couples, dressed-up club girls on the first stop of the night. I tried a couple of late-night HH food items, which were decent but not special (even at the discounted price). There's an early and a late happy hour, and a $6 bargain margarita available at all hours. The place is also one of the few to serve food late in this hotel-heavy area (albeit from a limited menu). Sushi is available until 11pm. A DJ spins several nights a week. Recommended if you're staying in the downtown hotel district and want a bit a posher vibe, or if you're hungry late.

I've stopped by TRACE for sushi and brunch, and really enjoyed both experiences. The sushi stop was part of a pre-paid sushi crawl that my friend had organized, so it wasn't really a "normal" experience and I didn't actually get to choose anything I tried. The sushi rolls were delicious, though, and they let us try way more sushi than we were expecting for the price. Everybody was VERY happy! I stopped by for brunch several weeks or months later, and we were surprised (again) because the staff decided to give our table a sampler platter of bread and pastries. I believe I had a meat and cheese plate, which was good... but I didn't get to enjoy any of the Brie because they cleaned up the plates while I was away from the table. I guess I could have eaten faster or talked less, but I still wish they wouldn't have assumed that I didn't want to even try the Brie... I love Brie! I was just saving it for last. I don't end up here frequently because I have some other favorite spots in the area (and no longer work downtown), but I've been very happy with most of the experiences and will probably visit TRACE again.

Cool and convenient but high priced for sushi that's just not very good :( would not recommend. The fish was not fresh and even in my hungriest state I honestly couldn't finish it. It just plain wasn't good or authentic.

Been here twice for dinner and drinks and had a birthday party for a group of 40-50. I've had the sashimi salad, the lemongrass chicken wings, the sausage slider, the pulled pork slider and the poke with won ton chips. The sashimi was nice and fresh, but the whole salad thing didnt do it for me. Next time... I'm just going to order the sashimi. The sliders were pretty good too, but nothing extraordinary. The wings were really good! I loved the seasoning. Lastly, the poke with won ton chips were good, but the portion was just too small for me. To be honest, I would prefer just poke or poke with rice. Overall, the food was good, but my favorite part about Trace is the decor, atmosphere and the drinks. The lounge area where we had my party was spacious and the fireplace was awesome. If you want to reserve the lounge area, you just have to contact them and see if it's available. Definitely going back.

Still 4 stars so same as my previous rating except this time the service was way better! Maybe it's because we didn't come here for hh Our server was very attentive and she had 2 runners helping her but she always checked back with us after the first bite, first sip of drinks ... etc so I guess I'll take back what I said in my previous review about the servers being slow food was great too! I had the steak salad and my boyfriend had the steak. We both loved it!

I come here for the happy hour hand rolls. They are huge, filling, and cheap. Oh, and the brussels sprouts. The other food is good too, these are just my favorites. Friend and I sat at the high tables near next to the frayed fibers. All good until they got stuck in my backpack, oops! I like Trace, it's a great bar in the W Hotel that is good for large parties, or those looking for some space without your ears being cramped into other people's conversations. The modern ambiance is chic and enjoyable. Service is attentive and helpful!

During a girls trip in Seattle, we decided to stop by at Trace since it was the closest lounge to our hotel (the Renaissance). For a Friday night, the place wasn't that exciting since there weren't many people there. Music was very lounge-y, so it may have been better to have had something a little more upbeat for the environment.

Trace is the restaurant part of the W hotel. Keeping up with the W standards Trace offers a great selection of food ranging from burgers, turkey clubs, omelets, and the quintessential american breakfast. Trace also offers some islander flavor consisting of kalua pork benidict, superb sushi rolls, saimin bowls with exquisite flavor, and great fillets of sashimi. Trace also can accommodate a large lounge space which can cater to any large business party, birthday, or other group function. As being in the service industry for the last 5 years I can vouch that this place has everything any patron or guest could ever ask for when it comes to ambiance, food, and fun. If your in the area or strolling by come by and check it out yourself!!!

It's hard to figure out what exactly is going on with a restaurant during restaurant week. Are they coming up with a compromised menu to fit the $30 price point or are they going the extra distance to really showcase their food. In the case of trace, I'm going to assume it's the former because if what we ate was a showcase then this restaurant needs a lot of work. There was nothing we had that was bad but I think the best thing I could say about my meal was that it was better than mediocre. My risotto was dry and really undercooked. I like my risotto with a little bite but not with a little crunch. The desert was the highlight. I'm not a big desert person but the trifle was noteworthy. I was impressed by the fact they had a real kids menu ... most higher-end restaurants don't. I was, however, disappointed by the burger on the kids menu. There seems to be this trend to overcook burgers for kids. I realize that kids may not like a bloody burger but I don't see why they can't leave a little pink in there just so the meat doesn't dry out so much. Our son, who normally loves hamburgers, ate a few bites and then put the burger down. Again, I wouldn't say this was a bad restaurant but I don't see myself coming back here anytime soon.

Happy hour baby! nice little menu of choice items for noshing and drinks. Love the decor and lounge area. Trace was directly across the street from our hotel in downtown Seattle and we couldn't pass up the opportunity for happy hour. I think their well drinks are mid-level in most bars. Great selection

I came here last night for dinner after checking into my room and sat in the dining room (all alone, so sads). I ordered a glass of the Pinot wine, the warm beet and arugula salad, and an avocado roll. The wine came immediately and the food came fairly fast! The salad was amazing- I really liked the light dressing, the goat cheese, and the crispy onions on top. After I was done with that I was definitely ready for some more! There was also some red and green powdery stuff on the side of the bowl which I tried and which tasted good too. My avocado roll was delicious as well. In the middle of my dinner I realized it wouldn't be enough food, so I added a cucumber roll, which came fairly fast. I did prefer the avocado roll to the cucumber roll, but both were really good overall. I also thought that they were extremely reasonably priced at $5 for each roll. Would I come back? Yes!! I'm craving sushi already...

I placed a phone order to pick up. The initial round of everything went well. The only hick up was they wanted me to charge the meal to my room even though I had already said on the phone that I was staying at a different hotel. As soon as I got back to my hotel room a couple blocks away, the problems started. I received a call saying they had left out part of my order (the dessert). So I walked a couple blocks back to go pick it up. By the time I got back to my room my soup and dinner were both nearly cold. But I don't think they would have been any better if they had been warm. I've had better squash soup at Panera, and the risotto had things in it that could not even be chewed. The best part of my meal by far was the dessert I had to go back to pick up. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very hip and trendy. Dim lighting, snobby wait staff, dressed up patrons. I call the wait staff snobby because they weren't willing to assist me when I went back the second time. I had to wait five minutes for the hostess to come back. And I wasn't even offered a comp for all of my inconvenience. Overall this might be a nice place for happy hour with a group of friends. But it is not friendly to casually dressed female business travelers just wanting to take a meal back to the hotel room and unwind.

We ate in the bar for happy hour. The HH food menu is a little random - some of this, a little of that - but everything we ordered was delicious. I highly recommend the brussel sprouts and pulled pork sliders. Service was terrible. Our waitress was very inattentive and it wasn't a busy night...

Went to this place with my friend for her birthday lunch. The food was ok, the burger was a bit greasy, it's a bit of an over kill with butter on the bun then fatty sauce as well... the cobbler dessert was full of dough. It was a big dough ball with a couple pieces of fruit. Our server was great, other than that, the food was just ok.

Stopped in here for a night cap after last weeks Yankees sweep of the Mariners. Beers were reasonably priced between $5 and $7, but $15 for an order of Seasame Chicken Wings (six full sized wings). Come on. My head still hurts from the beating my wallet took.......

Just had sliders in the bar for lunch. They were superb and at 4 each two made a great inxpensive lunch. The decore is enjoyable and the service is exactly right. I plan to come back for dinner on Friday. It was that good.

The atmosphere is nice and we like the setup with the fireplace, although the fireplace wasn't on half the time. The lounge area would've been enjoyable, but it's impossible to get any service there. The two young lady servers saw us sit and 20 minutes later we moved to the bar. The two girls were talking to each other behind the bar like there wasn't any people to wait on in the lounge. If you go there, definitely sit at the bar for good service.

Well whoever the chef is back there...kudos on the flavors. Hanging out at the bar during the day is not a common occurrence but the World Cup is playing on the flat screen the the drinks are well made so you couldn't ask for more...wait I guess you can because the afternoon menu is on it dog-gon-it . I could eat those brussel sprouts til the cows come home. Drop by you won't be disappointed...

love the atmosphere there. Tried their SRW menu and it was great. The sashimi salad was great, really fresh and lots of salmon and tuna in it. The Hanger steak with fries were amazing too, just a bit dry at the tip of the steak. Dessert with the pumpkin semifreddo was really good too, but by the time of dessert I was so full, I couldn't finish them, so sad. Overall experience was great!!

Trace is a few blocks from my work. The A-frame sign outside, from my perspective, is a little tacky and not aligned with the vibe they're going for, but that's just me. Stepping inside is a bit breathtaking. As you come through the revolving door, you are situated directly in front of a lounge area with a fireplace. Ooooh...ahhhh. As my friend and I veered to the right, we were greeted by a man that was very polite. As he took us to be seated, he kindly pointed out the step so that we wouldn't trip, and pulled chairs out for us. Nice. We were seated at a high table for two at lunch. I don't know how everyone feels about those tables but I'm short. I have a hard time with them. The space itself is beautiful. The lighting, design, and decor is top notch. The bar is very sophisticated but has a bit of character, like a few rubber ducks (which I presume were bottle tops), that made me smile. Our server was excellent. She was efficient and polite. She took time at the beginning to explain what Trace meant. It seems like a little thing but I appreciated it. She also gave us a choice of three different kinds of water. A bit pretentious, but still thoughtful. One of the reasons I go to places during Restaurant Week is to see if I would pay full price for their food, whether it's lunch or dinner. I didn't go to Trace until now because frankly, I was a little averse from the previous restaurant that was there. My friend and I made different selections off the Restaurant Week menu and shared the food. Between the two of us, we had the following: - Crispy egg, grilled asparagus, foraged mushrooms (appetizer) - Saimin noodles, pork miso broth, and chili oil (appetizer) - Duck confit flatbread, Rogue blue cheese, arugula (entree) - Sushi roll (4pcs), Trace roll with seaweed salad (entree) - Warm huckleberry cobbler, vanilla gelato (dessert) - Theo chocolate cake (dessert) The appetizers were okay; I liked the crispy egg more than the saimin noodles. The saimin noodles were overcooked and despite chili oil, the broth was underseasoned. The entrees were a toss up. The duck confit flatbread was fantastic! I could eat those all day. The Trace roll was a huge disappointment. You would think that a signature dish would be the best. I eat sushi a lot. This did not taste like it was rolled for me. It tasted like it had been rolled ahead of time and had been sitting around. The rolls were a slight bit chilled, almost as if they had been sitting in the fridge, but not so much that the rice was hard. The best thing about the sushi was the high quality wasabi that was served with it. Dessert stole the show, as it often does for me during Restaurant Week. Although the portions looked small, they were decadent. The huckleberry cobbler was served in a small, cast iron dish. The vanilla gelato really set off the flavors in the cobbler and the proportions were spot on. The chocolate cake was dreamy. Not only was the cake fantastic but the presentation was beautiful. I think Trace is worth another try but I'm concerned about the lack of consistency in the quality of the food. Clearly, they have desserts down but I rarely partake in such things anymore, except special occasions. If you take dessert off the table, really, one dish was at the quality that I would pay their price point. In such a competitive area, I'm hoping my next experience with Trace will prove to be a more positive one.

The W revamped their street-level restaurant and I like it. To me, the previous one was nice yet a bit too dark lending a subtle dungeon feeling. This new facelift has a neat retro-modern twist giving off a pleasantly lit atmosphere without being "bright". Stopping in for some to-go lunch, I pulled up at the bar, even though no one greeted me wandering in. While I waited for the chicken baguette sandwich with string fries, I decide to phuket and get a cup of sake while I wait. I get the cheapest one, Masumi Mirror of Truth, and although it was the cheapest on the list, that doesn't necessarily equate to "bad" or "lower-end" or "cheap" sake -- this was good stuff. I returned to the office and downed my food. The prices are rather inline for a swanky place in downtown, with good[-conscious?] food and a darn cool vibe. The bartender was ok. I wonder if they have HH? She mentioned the giant, funky aggressively-styled booth up front is actually the DJ booth. Whoa! That must be pretty sick with lasers and lights and stuff firing at all angles. And safety first! Watch your step at the not-so-obvious marked steps at the bar.

Service timely and friendly. Poor water refills. Music offensively loud toward end of dinner. Food and presentation ordinary. The ambience is the best feature. Would recommend this restaurant to people who prefer well prepared traditional food in a trendy atmosphere.

We came here for sushi/rolls and sashimi. They were telling us the salmon was the item to try in terms of sashimi. OMG. The salmon was buttery.....wonderful texture and excellent. The rolls were excellent. Our server was excellent and she had a great command of the sushi though she said she wouldn't eat Tako--octopus. (It was very good). Great food, screwy menu--Northwest + Asian + Breakfast. This spot is located in the W and is at least the 3rd restaurant I've been to in this location over about 10 years. The prices are steep for Sushi. Expect to pay $50-60 per person for lunch.

So this might be the weirdest, or least generally useful review of Trace, but here it comes from the perspective of a dad on spring break with 2 kids for a weekend. We stayed 2 nights at the W, so Trace served us 2 breakfasts, 1 dinner, and 1 cocktail hour. Food is Asian-Northwest fusion, prepared by masters back in the kitchen and at the sushi bar. The food is all first class gourmet fare. We customized and/or ordered off the menu for every meal and they did a great job. My kids weren't the only ones in the place, but don't bring yours if they won't behave like adults. They wouldn't be welcome. The waiter we had for dinner seemed new, and a tiny bit disorganized. (thus the 4 stars, not 5). The service at the bar for cocktails was just fine, and the bartenders know their stuff. The atmosphere is a really cool vibe without annoying music or televisions, so you can hold a conversation. Dress is biz casual or club wear for most patrons( at least to fit in). I got a few looks when I showed up with the kids, but their behavior won them good marks in the eye of the staff I think. The decor is fantastic. If a full meal is not your intent, Trace would be a great place for happy hour during the week, or cocktails prior to an event on the weekend. The appetizers are great, and their signature cocktails look good. I only sampled 2, but most of the others looked good. I would purposefully make this place a destination next time I'm in town. Highly recommended.

This resto was part of the dinearoundseattle.org promotion. I choose for the main entree the TRACE roll which had real crab meat in the middle and salmon on top. Very tasty, however it may be pricey. I would only go back during another promotion or happy hour but I am probably more price sensitive than your typical hotel guest visiting Seattle.

Pros: Very creative food. The best ice cream sandwiches ever. Comfy chairs - very important. Adequate modern sushi rolls. Yummy tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich. Cons: Pleasant but poor service (e.g., messed up order more than once, inattentive even though it wasn't busy, conflicting with other customers), limited menu, not-so-great food, strange name for an Asian fusion restaurant.

Nice atmosphere and yummy food. This is Seattle Restaurant Week worthy for lunch. The portions are larger than expected and the food is yummy! For $15 during restaurant week, you cannot beat the 3-course menu. It has a swanky atmosphere (like all W hotels) - but if you get there early, you will beat the crowd. Must try: Kale Soup - delicious!

Cool, trendy restaurant with a good sushi menu. Although there aren't that many choices, the options that they have all seemed really delicious and slightly unique in their own way. I ordered the emerald city roll: albacore and unagi with shaved carrots and sprouts sprinkled on top. The albacore was perfectly seared and the unagi was moist and flavorful, but not over powering. It was served with a sauce that was lightly creamy and slightly spicy. Definitely a good choice if you don't want anything to heavy or oily. For dessert, I ordered the zucchini bread pudding, which was perfect for me because I love zucchini, I love zucchini bread, I love bread pudding... what's not to love about this dessert?! The bread pudding also had chunks of squash in it, which I've never seen before, but it made the bread pudding very moist. All in all, a very good meal.

A true Hotel restaurant gem. I do really enjoy all of the W Hotel restaurants but Trace does stand out amongst its peers. The suchi and pork sliders aer wonderful! However, I must say that the saimin bowl is truly a unique dish that you do not find outside of Hawaii. It is a great late night snack with bok choy, mushrooms, and egg. Almost worthy of what I will now refer to as the Momofuku status in honor of David Chang! BTW the sushi is truly awsome. Seattle is a world class restaurant destination!

First of all this isn't an American food restaurant, it's much more Japanese, most items are sushi. Atmosphere is cold, with grey walls and some kind of wierd-assed scheme from the '80's, which conveyed the feeling "don't get comfortable". I ordered the hamburger because they had the good taste to put swiss cheese on it - not that yellow crap. It was really good - smaller in size, but the burger patty itself was huge - one of the best in this town, but it's an odd-ball item on this menu. Service was good, but $40.00 (including tax, and tip) for a burger, martini and pot of tea? This was lunch, mind you. You decide.

Random hotel breakfast turned out to be one of the best breakfasts I've had at any hotel. I never order corned beef hash because it's one of those comfort foods that always ends up as a disgusting plate of slop. But here the words "crispy poached eggs" caught my eye and I ordered the meal that came with them; rustic corned beef hash, crispy poached eggs, sweet onions, brussels sprouts. yelp.com/biz_photos/hPOm… The delightfully crispy eggs were magically still poached in the center and bled out a find stream of yolk to slather over everything else on the plate. The beef itself was seasoned nicely and fell apart with every stab of my fork. The potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and onions all worked to slightly cut the richness of the beef. All in all it was a damn good plate of food. Kudos to anyone who can deep fry a poached egg and keep the yolk 100% runny.

Its hard to find a 1 but this place has earned it. I think the only thing going for TRACE is that they are attached to the W Hotel, but even that isn't good enough. The staff is either moody, pretentious, or shy (i couldn't figure out which one) and the food was just simply awful. First, the menu is just stupid... I realize why there was nobody there. The menu and the food is just NOT good.. I eat a LOT of sushi, and I love hot food, and they often go very well together but not this time, first... For lack of good product, the solution is not to slather everything with pepper oil. My kids ordered the poke tuna. NOT good.. Slathered in pepper oil, NASTY tasting. I ordered something... some roll, which was really nothing more than a california roll with a glob of chimmichri on each one... My son could have made these. The sushi was OK, outside of the $65 OMAKASE, there was no 8 or 10 piece combo with rice.. I also think our waiter was new or maybe embarrased to work there.. I believe i counted 10 words total in the whole hour we were there.. Just BAD performance..

Good food, overall good staff but a very expected hotel restaurant experience. The menu is safe and pricey but everything I have tried was good. You know you can have a nice meal here, in a nice setting. Since its in the W you get that modern feel in the restaurant and for lunch its usually quite slow. They were recently awarded a prize for being a great hotel restaurant. This is a great place for a business lunch. enjoy.

10 years ago, the W hotel bar was perfect for my post-work Seattle business trip cocktails. Today they're calling it Trace, and for my taste it's a little sterile and pretentious. Back in the day, the bartenders were engaging, friendly and efficient. I didn't see a lot of that on my last trip. There are some really good appetizers, however, and they do make a mean cocktail. Just be willing to pay for the privilige, because damn! Really expensive, even for Seattle.

I was turned onto Trace by other Yelpers. I wanted something nice and local. I was a little surprised to see that this was actually the restaurant in a hotel, the W to be precise. I looked around a bit from the street to see if it was actually the place I was looking for, but the address matched. Inside, I found the concierge and was led to a table immediately. I noticed there were two bars (I was a wee bit on the intoxicated side, so this could be an error). The decor was great....modern and throwback at the same time. Lots of wood, but lots of metal and big, sweeping pieces. I was charmed instantly. It seemed a little dark, but was bright enough for me to read by. The waitress was extremely friendly and helpful, stopping by often, and helped me make a couple of beer selections when I asked for "something local." A basket of bread was delivered to me, and I was informed that it was all made in-house. The bread was so fabulous, I ate two buckets of it myself. Cracker-crisp breads and salted focaccia...thinking about it even now makes me want to go back for more. I ordered the Pepper and Espresso Spiced Sirloin Steak. With it was a white cheddar potato puree, foraged mushrooms, and charred lemon drizzled asparagus. I ordered my steak well done (I know, horrors!) and, upon arrival, it was done perfectly. It lay on several very deceptively thin streaks of potato, with the asparagus and mushrooms artfully arrayed on the plate. This truly hit the core of aesthetic combined with taste. I enjoyed all of it, and I never usually eat asparagus. Halfway through my dinner, when I noticed the second bar behind me, I approached the bartender Eric. I asked him to make me a specialty cocktail of his choosing and received a whiskey cocktail that was just excellent. He proved to be a pretty good mixologist. I was alone and had three drinks, along with my steak. The bill, with tip, came to about $75. Somewhat higher than, say, McDonalds, but the quality, atmosphere, and social-consciousness (of that whole "Trace the food to its source" thing) were top-notch and well worth the outing. I would go here anytime.

Pretty good....I enjoyed the breakfast selections, especially the omelette with salmon. Until my mother asked for slices of tomato for her bagel... and paid FOUR DOLLARS FOR THE TOMATO. FOUR. DOLLARS. WTF. It was very expensive in general, but $4 for a tiny tomato is ridiculous.

I struggled with what rating to give Trace. If I could have given 3.5, I would have. First off, Trace is an offshoot of the swanky W Hotel so you definitely expect a certain level of stylish ambiance and great service. Our waitress was great and accommodating--but we had to wait on on our entrees for about 20 minutes and that's the deal breaker for a good review. It would have been one thing if this place was bustling--but we came in at 6:00pm and there were only 4 full tables. So it made me wonder if they were understaffed in the kitchen. The sushi was pricey but it was good. We had the Trace Roll, Angry Crab Roll, and Crunchy Shrimp Roll. All of them were delicious--no complaints on the taste. The rolls however were overpriced--even taking into account that you're paying for the swanky ambiance as well. But when you're paying upwards of $12-$20 per roll--you would expect quicker service.

My husband and I came here for dinner before going to a show on Saturday night. Based on the atmosphere and the prices on the menu, we expected a nice restaurant. The menu was a bit random (mostly sushi, but also bread and pasta). We ordered drinks and 2 sushi rolls, to which our waitress replied that she would be back with some bread (with sushi?). After a long wait (and no bread), our food and our drinks all arrived at once. The person who brought our sushi randomly placed one plate of sushi in front of me and the other in front of my husband, like it was a dinner plate instead of a shared meal. We moved the plates to the center of the table where they belonged, then looked down at the knife, fork, and spoon that no one had taken away or replaced with chopsticks. We also did not have plates or soy sauce. We tried to get the attention of the person who brought our food, but he left quickly without saying a word to us. After sitting for a bit, reluctant to eat our sushi with our hands or with a fork, my husband got up and asked a chef at the sushi bar for some chop sticks and some plates. Our waitress brought them out to us shortly after that, but without any apology or acknowledgement that they should have been there sooner. Perhaps it was our bad experience, but I was not impressed with the food. There are scores of other sushi restaurants in Seattle that are less expensive, with much better service and better food.

Although I am not crazy about the atmosphere, the food (albeit overpriced) definitely deserves 4 stars. - Fried cheese curds (they removed them from the menu, but you can still request them) - excellent. The ultimate comfort appetizer! - Burger - when cooked right - excellent! Decadent, meaty (but not oversized), yum! - Pulled pork sliders - outstanding. I always have to have at least one. - Fries - good. - Sushi - good, but way overpriced! The service, especially at the bar, is impecable.

Trace juxtaposes a great concept involving fresh, locally-sourced ingredients with a modern, lounge vibe. In terms of ambiance, this is the kind of place you should go with a group of friends to get tipsy on drinks and have dinner, but not a place where you plan to have a nice long meal with a reflective conversation. Although I usually prefer to do the latter, I did like the modern decor. The tables have that great lacquer on top - and the seats were comfortable and an attractive butter yellow. I like the aesthetic of the sushi bar with a peek into the kitchen, and the impressive entrance through the W Hotel with the huge fireplace and lounge chairs. The food was overall fantastic. I don't mind the sushi mixed with American dishes. It's Seattle, so you should expect Asian fusion, or Asian plus American as the case may be. The Trace roll was delicious and as good as anything at Umi or Wasabi Bistro. The steak was perfectly cooked with an amazingly buttery mushroom sauce that I could have eaten on its own. I ordered the king crab pappardelle - the pasta was freshly made and tasted like it, the sauce was light and buttery, and the crab was incredibly fresh. A few gripes: the crab was so fresh that there were shells in it that I had to pick out. I wasn't sure if it was just a sloppy crab-meat-pulling job, or they were trying to make sure you knew it was real crab ... either way I could have done without the shells. Also, the short-rib lettuce wraps were tasty, but the lettuce was too small for the ingredients. We made a huge mess eating it. I needed wet wipes afterwards. For dessert we tried the Meyer lemon and olive oil cake with cardamom gelato. Very good - more of a palate cleanser than a dessert, given the portion size and the tartness of the lemon - but beautifully presented and tasty. If it weren't for the crab shells, the messy lettuce wraps, and the competent but mediocre service, I would have given this place five stars. But it's pretty darn close.

I met up with some of my former classmates at Trace on a Friday night for drinks and some bites. Located in the W Seattle hotel, Trace has a super swanky feel when you first walk in. At the entrance you are greeted by a huge tree-like structure covered in shiny steel plates and a large curved fireplace flanked by leather banquettes, funky chairs and stools where you can lounge and have cocktails on teeny, tiny tables. We thought it would be fun to sit in that area but the place was already pretty packed by 5:00 so we ended up snagging a table near the bar from some ladies who happened to be getting up at the right moment. The waitress greeted us right away and took our drink orders, but unfortunately the service really seemed to go downhill from there. However, when we finally did receive our appetizers they were absolutely delicious, which made up for the lackluster waitstaff. Happy hour is daily from 4 to 7 and includes $4 draft beers, $5 bites, $6 house wines and $7 well drinks. We ordered an assortment of drinks and appetizers and were pleasantly surprised. The handcut fries come covered with beecher's flagship cheddar and garlic aioli on the side. They were probably the best fries I've had in a long time, and I LOVED the mini bottle of ketchup! We also had the sesame & soy braised short rib lettuce wraps with turmeric apples and kochujang sauce. These had so much flavor! But the Kurt's Camembert Crostinis with fennel and apricot jam were absolutely our favorite! It seemed like such a weird combination but it was actually so delicious that we ordered seconds! So even though the service at Trace was extremely slow, the prices were great for happy hour and the food was amazing, so I would probably go back again.

I would give this place a 3.5. Came here for lunch for Dine around seattle. They had a good selection on their menu. I got The spicy tuna hand roll, The pasta and The rubarb cobbler. All of it was pretty good. Their normal priced menu looked on The more expensive side. Service was good too.

Came here for lunch with a friend. I ordered the $16 sushi lunch combo and my friend ordered the $17 pastrami sandwhich. Mine was horrible but my friend absolutely loved her lunch. Said it was one of the best if not the best pastrami sandwhich she has had. I sure hope so at $17. Mine combo came with a cup of warm me so soup broth and hard ramen noodles, 4 tiny pieces if California roll (rice was cold and hard) and a simple lettuce side with light vinegarette dressing. Not what I was expecting for $16. I could have had a better and less expensive lunch buying from the food court. The reason I am giving this place 3 stars as opposed to 2 stars is because the place is clean, and beautiful... And my friend happened to enjoy her $17 sandwhich. I probably won't be coming back.

Just okay. After seeing all of the great reviews I got take out, and it is way overpriced for the quality of my food. The sushi roll barely has any sauce, super dry crab, and the shrimp tempura in it taste like asian deli market tempura. I will say that I thoroughly enjoy the sushi rice. One of the biggest offenders of any sushi is if the rice is dry or without vinegar. I am only in Seattle for a few more days and it is just that more disappointing to waste a night of dinner on food that just isn't worth it.

Yes, it is expensive, alas happy hour is affordable and worth a try if you are ballin' on a budget... but don't walk in like Miranda from Sex & the City, Season 4. You know, when she has Brady and doesn't really fit in anymore? Dress well, please. Anyway, Our dinner experience was absolutely delightful! Our server, Colby, was fantastic. A girlfriend and I went all-out with wine, sushi app, chef's menu (tomato-themed- salad, ravioli, tomato sorbet), and the scallops. Spicy tuna roll wasn't memorable, but the fish was quality and had a great level of kick. The scallops were beautifully arranged and cooked perfectly. Kinda salty, but I'd order again. Ah yes, and dessert. The chocolate/banana/PB dessert (served with PB gelato)....DEEEE-VINE. If you're hesitant about TRACE from mixed reviews, start with wine & dessert. And throw in some scallops- why not? (*Note to mgmt: our server, Colby, was fantastic!)

Weird seating. Service was fast and friendly. This would be a good place to come with a group. Food is tasty, but watch out for the prices. I couldn't imagine coming here for anything other than happy hour. Pomegranate oysters are a must try. Oyster shooters were reasonable tasting, lavender longpour was disappointing. Muscles and clams tasted amazing, but please warn me if you're going to serve me food that still has its face (crawdad). Good experience overall.

The service was cordial, but not warm. We were staying at the W Hotel in the same building, which I imagine would account for a lot of their business. The atmosphere was very trendy/hip/modern. The ambient sound was loud enough that carrying on a conversation was difficult. I imagine the lack of carpets and the abundance of hard surfaces accentuated that. The environment felt a bit cold. We looked at the restaurant's website for their menu. The prix-fixe meal looked really good, so we decided to give it a try. When we got there, we found that the menu from the website is not the same as the menu in the restaurant. I asked about the difference, and the server told me that they change the menu monthly. This was on the 12th, so assuming monthly means on the first, that means that almost a half-month had gone by. Here is the previous prix-fixe menu. * Tomato Bisque with Grilled Four Cheese and Mushroom Sandwich * Carlton Farms Smoked Pork Chop - sautéed chard, caramelized onions, cherry mostarda * Peach Cobbler - vanilla gelato The new one had "Sweet Corn Soup & Roasted Pepper Puree" for the appetizer, a duck dish for the main course, and "Fuji Apple Cobbler" instead of peach. Since the current prix fixe menu had duck, which we don't eat, that wasn't going to work for us. We asked if they could still do the previous month's meal. Our server told us that some, but not all, of the items were available. Basically, they could do the current month's prix-fixe, but replacing the entree with the smoked pork chop from last month's. I asked if we could substitute their chicken dish for one of them, since it was the same price. The server said that wouldn't be a problem, but then she came back and told us that they wouldn't do it. When you're already in a negative situation, don't say no to your customer when it doesn't cost you anything! The chicken dish was actually a dollar less! First, we received our soup. That was the best part of our meal. Wow! It was extremely good! We loved that soup, and we both ate every drop! The restaurant was about half-full. They were doing a good business, but it was not at all crowded. I mention this because there was a significant amount of time that passed between courses. Next, was our main course, the smoked pork chops. They were a bit dry, and the crust on the outside was like cutting leather! The server brought us sharper knives to deal with it, but it was still really difficult. The taste was good, but not great. The last course was the fuji apple cobbler. The vanilla gelato was very small, and not very rich, almost like a vanilla sorbet. The apple in the cobbler was cut into really small cubes. The crust was sort of like a granola crust. It wasn't a rich, biscuit-like crust that I think of when I think of cobbler. I wouldn't at all call this desert bad, but it wasn't very good, either. I'm sure that the light gelato and the granola crust were healthier than rich ice cream and biscuit crust, but when I go out for a moderately expensive meal, I'm not looking for healthy. Also, big chunks of apple would be nice instead of tiny cubes (about a half-centimeter or so). We like to walk after dinner, so we went around the block. We saw a place called "Sazerac" and wished we had eaten there. I don't know what the food is like there, but it looked warm and inviting, not cold and impersonal.

If there were an option to select 4 1/2 stars , I certainly would! The W Seattle has taken another step in reinforcing their fearless approach to cutting edge interior design in support of their ever-evolving brand. It was refreshing to see a Seattle hotel push back against standard expectations in what a Seattle hotel "should" look like. The new lobby completely surprises with their take on an Aviation/Lodge feel - and whoever had the cajones to marry orange, hot pink, neutrals and metals together gets a big thumbs up from me. Lot's of soft seating, interesting decor and places for gathering put this space on my list of "top places to meet". The concept of TRACE - literally being able to trace the food back to the local farm - is right on trend and appropriate when other hotel restaurants have not embraced the need to have more interesting and healthier options on the menu. The oysters, sushi rolls, Hummus w/soy beans and eggplant were all top notch. We drank Rombauer chardonnay which was a little pricier per glass than in other places, but not terribly so. I am taking clients back to dinner within the next week and am excited to experience more of the menu. I'm glad to see other positive reviews. For those who did not enjoy the new look of the W Seattle or TRACE, I might suggest a more traditional, less chic, dining experience

This place has mediocre food and small portions at a high price point. Ambiance is clean and modern but it feels like I am hanging out in a hotel lobby. The overall atmosphere is impersonal and the seating is sporadic - some chairs are comfy, some are not, and some are just awkward.

High-energy, bright decor, well-lit, friendly, stylish furnishings AND delicious? In MY Seattle? A 30 foot high metal fireplace-slash-DJ booth? Room for dancing? Is that even legal in this city?! This place cannot be for real. But until the illusion fades, I will be a regular here.

The W Hotel was closed for more than 2 months during the renovation. My mouth was watering to see what would result. The moment the website was open, I saw the braised beef with saffron papardelle pasta. Later, I saw the dish on the side of a bus. I had to have it. I took myself out for Pro Admins Week. I looked at the menu before ordering. ($10 for a California roll? Really? Does that come with a reach around?) The beef was SO tender. It parted with a wave of my fork. The pasta, made daily in house, was amazing. I had to flick away finely shaved cheese that was never mentioned in the menu. (Every other ingredient was mentioned. I hate cheese.) The service was flawless. At first, I wasn't sure who my actual server was. It was never oppressive. Between 3 servers, they made sure that my experience was sterling. Indeed, it was.

Foodgasm. My best friend's birthday was tonight and it was a Code Red to find a swanky bar to celebrate - no easy task in the Emerald City. While I've stayed at the W before, I'd never partaken of their restaurant/bar until tonight. And Oh did I partake. Felix the waiter was stellar - never hovering and spot-on with his food and drink recommendations. The cocktails, while pricey indeed, are expertly mixed - I'm a Vesper girl and usually hard-pressed to find a good blend in this town, but the W has it nailed. The beef lettuce wraps were melt-in-your-mouth delicious and warranted a discussion of just what sort of addictive ingredient they're putting in that sauce... I'm sure I'll feel a craving coming on next week. The foraged mushroom flatbread was delectable and portion sizes were practically perfect. This is not just a hotel bar, this is a classy joint that executes very well.

During my recent visit I went here for the late night happy hour. Decent selection of goodies & adult beverages. I was a bit disappointed with the maki sushi - rice tasted like it was made ahead of time & stored in the frirdge as opposed to rolled fresh. Spicy tuna temaki was much better.

We went to Trace last night with a group of 8 for dinner with reservations. This had to be the worst service we've ever experienced. I ordered a Chicken dinner because I can't eat Sushi and the waitress said "The chicken is made to order so it takes 25 minutes is that ok?" Made to order? I sure hope it isn't precooked for that price! It did indeed take not only 25 minutes for us to get our food, but 45 minutes. During that time our waitress didn't even come get us new drinks. So we had to track down the manager to order new drinks. We had ordered the Emerald Drop. She came with 2 drinks and told us they ran out of Midori so 4 of our friends had to order different drinks. Fine, but then 15 minutes later the couple next to us was served Emerald Drops. What??? Next, one of guests dinner went to another table so he had to wait another 45 minutes for his dinner!!! And this place wasn't even busy at all. To end the night, our bill included a mandatory tip. 8 of us will never return to Trace!

This bar is pretty swanky looking inside a fancy hotel and has many fancy expensive drinks, some of which are mighty tasty. However for a place with 12$ drinks I would hope that they would keep the tables clean. Perhaps this was a 1 time thing, but the table was so filthy we decided to get paper towels from the bathroom to clean it ourselves. Drinks were very tasty, much enjoyed the el diablo, cherry cognac sour was okay. Boyfriend had a bloody mary and the american pie, many other drinks looked out of the ordinary. Didn't have any food. Can't afford to go here on a regular basis as we spent nearly 60$ on 4 drinks. There are also some dangerous step offs into the bar and towards the bathroom, they do warn you in advance though, but beware if drinking. Service was decent minus the table.

First of all, I don't know who that Ryan guy is who gave the one star review, but he definitely had a stick up his you know where. Anyway, I went to Trace, and I really liked it! I'd give in 4.5 stars so I'll just round up to 5. I liked the ambiance, the lighting was perfect, not too dark, and the colors and decorations were very relaxing. It was a little loud, but I think that's because of the architecture of the room. The table settings were pretty, with hand made glass plates. Our server, Tanessa, was wonderful and cheery the entire time, one of those people who's probably always happy. She was always around when we needed her but was never pushy. We started with a Trace roll (sushi) and some edamame, which turned out to be surprisingly good, and paired it with a nice Beaujolais Nouveau, a summer red wine. We followed this appetizer with the Omakase, which is a tasting menu. The first two courses were excellent, some nagiri, an oyster, and a "hand roll" (it was kind of like a sushi roll shaped like an ice cream cone), and for the second course, Ahi Poke Chirashi (basically tuna tar-tar on a bed of avocado and rice with a cilantro pesto), so delicious! Next came scallops, which were very tasty, although the peas that came with them were underdone. After then was the Wagyu steak, which was cooked perfectly and had the most amazing sauce with it. This and the Tuna were my two favorite dishes. Then for dessert we had a green tea cake topped with a citrus mousse and fresh raspberries served with toasted rice sorbet. I was so full from all the other courses but this dessert was so worth it! All in all we had a wonderful experience and a good value, and the food was so good I would definitely go again. I recommend this to anyone who wants a somewhat fancy, yet relaxed environment for a decent price.

My boyfriend ate there twice the very week it opened and took me with him the second time. The food was fantastic! I had the pork and shrimp dish with a side of rice. The pork literally melted in my mouth. The drinks were good, the bartender was super friendly, and remembered my bf. Great spot.

While working late downtown, I came here for a break and a quick dinner. I ordered the Trace Roll ($18) and Seattle Swizzle ($12). The roll was OK; the drink was OK. The service was poor (lots of waiting, and bar tender complaining about his job). I'll give them another shot, and update the review accordingly.
