Totally unexpected atmosphere, it looks like a hole in the wall (with a very large wooden door) but inside is beautiful wood and great classic, clean, cozy pub feel. Pretty good happy hour prices, great brew selection (18 on tap!) my date and I both enjoyed our food and also a game of cribbage at the large wooden bar. Staff was attentive and nice. Lots of games and books available for use on premise. Quiet enough to have a nice conversation but not so quiet as to make you feel as if you were loud if you were talking. I plan to return!

Pro: Great atmosphere and decor! Great patio, very cool pub downstairs. Awesome bookstore. Good menu. Lots of cool cats. Con: Consistently weak service. The waitstaff are on island time, esp on patio or downstairs. Dont expect quick service!

I came here to catch up with an old friend that I hadn't seen in awhile. The environment was great for talking and it seemed like there were quite a few groups hanging out there. But this place is just way overpriced for what you get. The flavor was alright, but the portion was sad and it definitely tasted like $7 or $8 food you could and should find somewhere else. Save a lot of money and enjoy better quality at Schwarma King in the U District, or if you want to pay the same price as here and get a better value then go to Mediterranean Kitchen in Bellevue.

Third Place is my neighborhood bar pick! The atmosphere can range from crowded and noisy to quiet and chill enough for some work or reading. I really like their Greek salad along with one of the great local beers they have on tap. I enjoy all their Greek/Mediterranean food, though. Great place to meet up with a friend. Service is generally predictably acceptable. Not amazing, but this is a bar, not a sit down restaurant.

Things have changed a lot in Seattle in the last four plus years. Namely, food standards have gotten better and better and yesterdays spots have in some cases, failed to live up to the rapidly expanding Seattle food scene. Case in point, although I've been a regular here (its in my neighborhood) tonight I ate on the patio outside at the Pub at Third Place on and had a pretty terrible experience. From spilling two drinks on us (and damaging books we just purchased inside their store, but this I wasn't too concerned about) to being left for long stretches on the patio without any anyone from the pub in sight, to debating whether the medium rare burger I ordered and sent back was actually medium rare (it wasn't, mostly grey very little pink) with a server, to receiving a second burger that was far too rare to eat when the kitchen decided to send something out that was just shy of raw, I can't recommend this spot in good conscience. Certainly, its a no-go for a solid burger. Skip it. You can do better. The bar has gone up in the Seattle food scene and there are many very solid burger spots out there and most are familiar with how to cook a succulent medium rare burger and serve it up with style and alongside craft beer on tap. My last thought for you Third Place: if you are offering a $16 burger (yep, that's the price) you'd better be super solid on how to prepare it.

I love this place to death! It's a really quiet little gem. A bar in a bookstore is a great idea. The parking is good as well.

What a wonderful and hidden bar! Imagine if somebody carved out a cave in the trunk of giant tree and put a bar in it... It's awesome with natural wood slabs everywhere! We came in for happy hour. The food was delicious; order the fries. As someone else mentioned, the beer list made of good beers and there's a rotating selection. Happy hour means $1 off pints and $2 off pitchers. Our bartender's name was Frank. He was good to us. There were a few others in the pub, but we got our orders quickly. Near the bar you'll find lots of books and games including Settlers of Catan and Cards Against Humanity! I can't wait to go there again! Oh... Also, the music that was playing in there today was so good... I've never heard it before.

I love the Pub at Third Place. Very cool basement-y atmosphere, but up scaled, wood everything, great but not extensive selection of beers, hip and friendly service, and killer grub from Vios, the Greek joint upstairs. And then you can go book shopping!

There was a fly in my beer.... isn't there a joke about that somewhere? they got me a new one, but was kinda surprised when it wasn't comped.. is it too much to expect? waiters are very friendly, very touchy-feely. my waiter touched my shoulder like 3 times... fishing for a tip much? but really, the pulled pork sandwich was really freakin good. and the fries were nice as well. all in all. cool feel. unique space. good choice of beers.

It's an unique place and I enjoyed the food and beer selection. The 4-star rating is for the restaurant-bookstore connection. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'm pretty sure I'd be there all the time. My husband had the eggplant sandwich and he said the bread was pretty tough, but otherwise okay. We both enjoyed the appetizer dips. Their beet salad was yummy. The only really downfall was the slow service. I use to be a waitress, therefore I understand that things could be happening behind the scenes and want to give the benefit of the doubt. They were somewhat busy, but the patio had four tables open. They told us to go ahead and seat ourselves, so we did. All the tables still needed to be bussed, but that was okay by us. We'll just wait at one of the tables. And wait. And wait some more. A server came and went several times with no signal from her that she'd be with us. A bus boy walked by and cleared another table (perhaps he doesn't recognize we're new customers?). My husband finally stood up and grabbed our silverware, water and menus from a nearby waitress station (not sure if we were suppose to, but we were thirsty from a day in the sun and not sure when we'll get service). I used my menu to scrape all the food from the table to the ground (I needed to take some kind of action after staring at it for 10 minutes). Once the waitress came by, we put in most of our order since we weren't sure when we'd see her again. I'm curious what the service would had been like if we ate inside.

Love this place for the atmosphere, food and beer selection. Staff is usually aloof but not intentionally rude.

One of the best low-key, warm, homey spaces in Seattle. Tucked underneath Third Place Books, my girlfriend and I refer to this bar as "The Hobbit Hole" and it's easy to see why. The outside door is made from gnarled wood, the tables are beautiful wooden slabs, the bar is (good) beer and wine only, and the vibe is welcoming and friendly. They have board games, table service from someone in plaid, and a greek restaurant upstairs that serves fries with whipped feta that are wonderful. Firestone's Wookey Jack, a favorite of mine, is usually on tap and the selection covers a lot of ground stylistically. The only negative thing I can say is that I have had a flat pint here, though I don't know if that's their fault or the brewery that produced the beer. This is a conversation bar where the music is never too loud or intrusive, the service is adequate and quick, and the room is upbeat though intimate. This is a place to talk with friends or break out the Settlers of Catan over a few tasty pints. Seattle needs more bars like this one.

The food was good and the beer selection is terrific, but the service is so poor that I won't be coming back. Last time I was in about a week ago I waited at my table for several minutes while the server was behind the bar looking at her phone. That alone is nearly enough to cause me to walk out. When you're working, you're working. Turn your phone off, put it away, and do your job. When she came over to my table (no smile and no greeting, by the way) I asked her about a beer on the menu that I hadn't heard of before. She said, "Um...yeah...it's pretty good." I then asked a couple questions about the food menu, and she gave me one-word answers. It was clear she had no interest in helping me with my order.

Upon first walking into this pub i'm overwhelmed with wood...the kind they put on the walls....to be clear. It's pretty great! The beer selection is plentiful and the service is nice! Great neighborhood bar, really! The food comes from upstairs via Cafe Vios, which i dig because they have FALAFELS! and the most delightful of mediterranean dipping trios - hummus, olive tapenade & baba ghanoush - with yummy pita, kalamat & feta. Prices were a bit steep but hey, I'm willing to pay a bit extra to hang out in a pub like this. They have board games available for you to play. You'll see a student pouring over a stack of books in one corner, a small family having dinner in the other, & thirty-somethings at the bar. It's also really clean! yay for cleanliness. Bonus: hop on up to third place books and feel really good that you are in such a great bookstore!

I've been coming to Third Place Pub since they opened and before they were run by Vios. I've enjoyed their selection of beers and decent food. The food used to be better pub food but now they serve whatever Vios has upstairs. So, overall I do like the joint. But what really bugs me is their pricing and odd happy hours. Beers run $5.50-7, with no pricing on their rotating beers, so its just a crap shoot. More annoyingly, their happy hour times are confusing. I tend to not visit during happy hour but today I met someone for beers and some happy hour appetizers only to learn the appetizer happy hour times end an hour earlier than the drink happy hour. This is only noticeable if you read the fine print or stare at wonder at why your bill is $10 more than you expect. So, 3-4 stars for food and beer but 1 star for deception and confusing happy hours. Until they fix this problem it will remain 1 star and I will go visit the new pizza joint near home with clear and better priced happy hour times.

I often stop by this place after work to get a beer and read. The bartenders/servers are very friendly and attentive, the beer selection is good (although I'd like to see the taps change more often, but I've only been going there a few months so I'm not sure if it's something they ever do) and the food is good when I've had it. I wish there were more two-top tables, or bar seats for those of us who go alone and don't want to take up a giant table or sit at the mildly awkward, albeit insanely beautiful reclaimed wood, community tables. The bar and smaller tables fill up fast and I feel like a jerk sitting at the big ones alone! I love how well lit the pub is, as it would be a really good place to work on writing amidst the low murmur of table top games and meetings.

Love a good basement bar. Not a great place for a fire fight as we learned from Brad Pitt, but a great place to meet friends. Laid back, no loud music, just a lot of wood.

Really cozy for a basement bar! I loved the tables that are basically halved tree trunks. Beer selection wasn't bad, but service was on the slow side. I recommend the fries (they are boardwalk style) and the falafel. You'll feel at home here whether you want to get some work done on your laptop, hang with friends, or just read a book! I will be back.

Didn't even know this was here, but it's really cool. There's a great bookstore upstairs, which is probably obvious to everyone who has ever heard of Third Place Books in either location (for some reason I had thought they were only in Kenmore). There's a nice cafe upstairs along with it, with a big coffee counter and espresso machine. This place fills up with tons of kids at big family tables. Downstairs, there's a separate entrance on 65th, and there's also a staircase down from the cafe. There's a ton of pretty wood paneling, and the tables and benches have a nice rough-hewn look to them as well. It's kinda packed in, with a ceiling at basement height and tables close together. Feels homey, though--not cramped. The staff is pleasant and funny, and they're right on point throughout the meal no matter how busy it is, or how long you stay. They have a two-page menu of greek food from Vios upstairs, and they have a dozen good beers on tap--all thoughtfully chosen craft beers, too. They also serve wine and a few other things. The prices are very fair, and the food's really good. Dig everything about this place. Definitely be back.

I adore this pub. It's tucked below Third Place Books, and it looks like it'll be dim and tiny on the inside, but you're mistaken. It's well-lit and covered with beautiful wood paneling and furniture, from the rough-hewn tables to the bar. The beer list is extensive and delicious, and the menu is even more so. "Mediterranean food" has, as of late, unfortunately suffered at the hands of the masses and become, in many locations, greasy and unappetizing. Not here! Third Place serves impeccable options by the lovely Vios Cafe. Personal favorites include: the dip sampler (three delicious spreads, like kalamata olive or feta-pepper), chicken souvlaki, or the special I had last time: roasted dates, smoked almonds, and marinated olives. So. Tasty. The bartenders are friendly and helpful, there are board games to play, and plenty of seats (though it does fill up). What more can you ask for?

I live in the neighborhood and I absolutely love this place! Great ambiance, beer selection and service. The only down side is that sometimes it can be hard to find a seat and the last few times I've been there the portions seem to be a bit smaller. Great place to take people visiting, for a good meal or just a drink with friends. Also, try their truffle popcorn - cause its amazing!

  • Thomas G.

Food and dining experience is fine. Apparently they can't be bothered if you may have left your wallet there. It's not like loosing a wallet is time sensitive and should be dealt with in a quick fashion. The customer service stops once you sign the check. No amount to food/beverage/dining experience will make me come back here.

Really just a cool place. It was crowded when we went but it didn't hinder our time. I love the bookstore so when a friend told us to check it out, we had to. The beer selection was solid, and the fries were to die for. Wife enjoyed the truffle popcorn and we both liked our chicken pita sandwiches.

Dust parted, I was suddenly bathed in white light, a choir of angels sang a harmonized "aaah" and doves flew dramatically behind me when I took a bite of the pub fries -- french fries drizzled with mornay sauce and topped with a fried egg. The egg yolk and the sauce and the perfectly crispy fries. Oh mannn. If it wouldn't kill me to eat it everyday, I would. Awesome beer choices too! Service is inconsistent. They're always really nice and friendly but sometimes, it's kind of slow. No big, really. You'll want to stay anyway. But if you're not wanting to hang out all night, it might make you not very happy. Also I've been here a few times and they have yet to play music that I don't like. They've played the Black Keys (Attack & Release), Cold War Kids (Robbers & Cowards), Fugees and even some Charles Bradley. Quite the unexpected gem.

Grab a book at Third Place Books and a bite at The Pub. I've had their pastries and sandwiches but my favorite is the piping hot steel-cut oatmeal and fresh fruit. They provide a side of brown sugar and walnuts. I like to add steamed soy milk and a pot of gunpowder tea. It's the perfect recipe to take my time and read a chapter from that book I just bought on the way in!

I like this bar-- and although I wouldn't say I'm a regular, I do come by frequently with different guests. They have good food, beer, and generally nice staff. I'd love to give them another star, but my experience this evening was so terrible that I'm prompted to say something about it, and I'd rather not have to change my mind about this place since I liked it so much. I took my friend here tonight and they were showing the sochi olympics on the tv. I love the bartender that is usually here. He is extremely nice and attentive. The bartender I had this time around was not. I had fries and a beer, and when I finished I went up to look for a menu and was greeted with "what can I do for you?" I politely asked if the kitchen was still open and was again asked "what can I do for you?" And I said I'd like to get something else. "...so what can I do for you?" Was repeated again, this time in a really condescending, irate tone. It wasn't even that busy. I was further taken aback when she started participating in very racist jokes about the figure skater performing on one of their screens, Mao Asada. Her customer made a bunch of ignorant remarks speculating where she was from and then mentioned that she should go "back to her home country to shovel coal" and the bartender in turn said some pretty gross things back and laughed at some of the worst of it. There were a few people nearby of Asian descent in the room that definitely heard this crap. My friend and I were so disgusted we ended up leaving. I won't be paying to listen to that garbage again. If I see her there the next time I go, I'll be speaking with management.

I've been coming here for years, and the experience is usually pleasant. They have Old Rasputin on tap (YUM!) and the food is pretty good - not great, but like I said, they have Old Rasputin on tap. Many things can be forgiven if you have old Rasputin on tap. Last night I was starving, figuratively speaking of course, so I ordered the Lamb Souvlaki Plate. It's one of the most expensive items on the menu, so it should be a hearty portion of food, right? Right? Well, the plate arrives and it is a tiny portion - the "two skewers" of lamb is one skewer broken in half with 8 tiny little pieces of lamb on it - no more than 2 ounces of meat. This is served with a small pile of lettuce, two pitas cut into quarters, and a dollop of tzatziki. That's it. There is less food on my plate then would typically be in a gyro - and those cost half as much. I expressed my concerns, and tried to convince our waitress that this was a tragedy - everyone else at my table had a meal that was more substantial, more appetizing in appearance, and cost less! She offered to make it right, and by this I guess she meant that she would bring me some small sides to accompany my meal (hummus and olives) and then she would charge me $7 for said sides. Well I didn't feel there was value in my meal at $16, and I definitely felt cheated at $23. I guess I will have to get my Old Rasputin from a bottle from now on. Bah Humbug!

This is my neighborhood go-to spot. It's a great option for happy hour, beer & board games, and even studying. There is always always a little bit of everything going on here, which adds to its appeal. The pub is very cabin-esque, with all the wood and big open tables in the front and back, and board games you can choose from. (I often bring my own because on busy nights all the good games **rummikub** are taken). They have a nice beer selection and a good but odd mix of food. There is the pub menu which has classics like burgers, mac and cheese, and fries but then there is also a large Greek menu. My favorite are pita dips, salads, and gyros. The mezze platter is a little skimpy- they give you one meager skewer and a tiny portion of dip/salad which hardly makes it worth it. Overall the greek menu is good for sharing a few small plates but difficult to make a complete meal. I am probably one of the youngest regulars at this establishment, but I keep going back. It's my favorite bar when I want to go out, but don't actually want to go OUT.

Like so many before us, we've driven by this spot several times - today we finally decided to stop for a beer. The Pub at Third Place is now in our rotation. Casual setting, friendly staff, a more mature crowd and solid food. Good selection of brews on tap and several by the bottle to ensure that there is something for everyones taste. Wine - they have that as well. No full bar from what I could tell. What I also liked is the option to eat heavy or light, depending on your hunger level. We went light with a trio of tapenades. Other dishes where more along the line of pub grub such as fries, burgers plus several upper-scale entrees. I suggest stopping in for a beer, take a peek at the menu and see what you think. My guess is that you'll return.

Our bartender was a woman with short blondish hair and an attitude. When one of our group asked which of the beers she has put down was his she told him to "use his head." You can do better than this sassy beer server. We'll go elsewhere next time - too bad because the actually environment is nice with a wood interior and good snacks.

I really liked this place except... Except.... for the salad. It rocked. It tasted amazing but it was so F'ing small. I thought the price was reasonable before I saw the size of the salad. Greek Caesar rocked, the taste was great but it was so small I should have ordered 3. And btw it's a SALAD ! It's ok to make them larger people. Instead you give a ton of fries away but not a few olives? The wine was great, the place is super busy, awesome atmosphere, just don't go there as a vegetarian or you will starve to death and be broke at the same time. Make the salads larger and I will up the stars people. I will return!

Really great place. Solid food, good beer selection. It's a nice place for an easy weeknight dinner, casual dinner when the parents are in town, a beer with friends, or an afternoon hanging out on your computer. I love the Meze plate and all the dips and salads. The falafel is good and a great deal. Really I haven't had anything I didn't like. I wish they'd add desserts, though. The service is also really good.

What a pleasant cozy surprise in the basement of a cool neighborhood bookstore! Great local microbrew selection and the falafel pita was delicious. The greek food was a refreshing change of pace from the standard pub fare. Loved the solid wood tables anchoring the ends of the bar area! Definitely adding this to my list of go to's in this neck of the woods.

Great neighborhood bar with good food. Somewhat limited wine selection (in my opinion), but if you're really in it for the wine, this probably isn't your place anyway. Love that we can bring our kids here, which I know doesn't work for some people, but, hey, there are a ton of great bars where you can't take kids, so please just go to one of those!

So I finally came here for a drink tonight (a Tuesday). It was almost a full house once again, but this time my friends and I were looking for a place to have a drink and the Third Place Pub had what we needed. We ended up sharing a pitcher ($15) of the Maritime hefeweizen and I found it quite tasty. The crowd was a mix of college-aged folks and people who were in their 40s/50s. The music was folky-sounding Irish or Scottish music, but I'm not sure if this was the norm or because it's St. Patrick's Day. Either way I kind of dig that kind of music so it was fine by me. At one point my friends went out for a smoke, so I spent the time checking out the books and games they had in their bookcase. I ended up grabbing Beer for Dummies and learning a few new things. Sweet! Overall the atmosphere seemed pleasant enough, but it seemed like a better place to visit with a group of friends (or alone if you're looking to read/study/work) rather than depend on meeting someone new there (unless you go for an event like the "Science on Tap" discussions). The staff seemed friendly enough and were around when we were ordering, but after that we had to get up from our table when we had a question and when we wanted our bill (thankfully there was a guy at the bar almost the whole time). Over-all service was alright, but... probably would have seemed better if we sat at the bar (instead of a table) or had a big group so we could get a few pitchers (and/or wine) and then be satisfied for a long while.

I really love this place. It's like a cozy little hobbit hole in real life. Definitely a favorite for drinks and games with friends. Can be a little crowded certain nights though so you have have to wait for a table. They also have a decent beer on tap selection and a few cider choices. Only lacking star is for their food, it's from Vios Cafe upstairs. While the taste is alright I don think its a great value for your money. My advice? Eat dinner at home then come for drinks and a chill night out.

We are lucky enough to live two blocks from this fantastic establishment and are there quite a bit. I love that one would never guess from the street that such magic lurks behind that wooden door...great beer, great food, awesome people and yes....goddamn that truffle butter popcorn!!! So. Addictive. The pub definitely appeals to my inner Tolkien geekiness...I feel like I'm in a happy Hobbit hole. Oh, and kids are welcome, which is fantastical.

I was visiting Seattle over the weekend and I just wanted to have some beer with a friend that stays close by, so we walked into The Pub at Third Place. The place made me feel like I was inside a tree. They had so many beers on tap. I was craving native beers from Washington or Oregon, so we ordered a regional dark beer. The price was super great! quality plus affordable-nice!!! they stated they have about 18 beers on tap and the pitchers are only $13.00. I am definitely going to have me another beer at this place if am in town again.

I want to go back! The beer was good. Decor was good. Service was awesome. Pub fries... OMG pub flies. Who thought of this lovely dish. Fries with gravy and an egg on top. I had to really just enjoy it. Dipping the fries in the yoke of the egg was like heavenly. I think a huge plate of Pub fries is in order for dinner. Sorry had to go straight to the Pub Fries on this one.

Went there for dinner. It was a good find in the Ravenna neighborhood. We went to the bar downstairs too late for happy hour so we ordered off the Vios menu. The lamb souvlakis were really good, but were rather small. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff.

Wife and I had a terrific meal here last night. Terrific selection of microbrews, the pub-fries were AWESOME, and her burger and my gyro were great. Took quite a while for the food to arrive, but the waiter bought us a round and apologized-- the service was excellent. We'll be back.

I just love how full this place can get on a rainy Friday evening. It's not a very big bar to begin with, but that's what gives it such a warm, intimate feeling. The tables are all hewn from a giant fallen tree, and the walls are all wood-panelled, and the lighting is surprisingly bright for a bar (but never excessive). This feels like a very "Seattle" bar to me. Pros: Great selection of draught beers. (Truly the raison d'etre of a pub.) Beautiful wood paneling and reclaimed wood tabletops. Cons: Macaroni & cheese is much too salty. Big table by the front door doesn't leave any room to move -- just climb over the railing to join or leave a casual assemblage of your friends. Music is too loud.

Perhaps it's because we're starved for anything decent to eat in Gig Harbor or perhaps it is just that this place is great. Fantastic beer selection and incredible bar food. Didn't try the Greek food that comes from the cafe upstairs but it looked good. Did try a rum/carrot cake thing that was dope. Even good music.

I love this pub! First, it's like some sort of cozy basement hideout. Nice warm decor, lots of wood. The food is delicious -- decent hummus and falafel are really all I need in life. The bartenders are fantastically helpful and friendly. They have a giant long table at the back, and they have been very accomodating when I want to reserve it for large groups, and they've treated my groups really well. If this place weren't so inconveniently located for me, I think I would go here every weekend.

This is some serious pub food, I never felt so good being in a pub. You can tell the food is cooked with love. Being down in the pub, we sat at the bar and ordered off the pub menu. This place is super chill with books and games to chose from. it reminds me of a little speakeasy I used to run in my previous life. Anyhow, like I said the food is cooked with with love and care. My body was willing digest each bite. We started off with pub fries and a large Caesar. Pub fries are the best in Seattle and smokes any poutine I have had in this city. Granted its not a poutine, but when were talking anything with some sort of gravy style sauce, it becomes defined as poutine related. The sunny side egg was cooked perfect. Truthfully, I thought I would get a fast cooked crispy around the edges egg with an overcooked bottom but instead it was a soft, perfectly cooked, runny yolk, sunny side up egg. I love it when restaurants cook eggs right. The Caesar here has to be the best Caesar in Seattle. The dressing is lemony with lots of dimensional acid as well the anchovy flavor is great. I could swear they are using white anchovies, just because the fishy flavor is so clean and authentic. don't ever change that Caesar. Next my guest and I shared Steak frites. Super tasty and cooked right. Nothing to complain about. Spending a couple hours there, just drinking and eating away we had dessert which was the semolina, hard to pronounce Greek thing. Sorry about that, but just perfect. Anyhow, this is my new go to spot when at pubbing. You just gotta know how to enjoy a non pretentious chill spot and grab a seat at the bar and let time pass by.

This is my neighborhood bar of choice because of the great happy hour food (try the hummus plate) and the great selection of local beers. They also have my boyfriends favorite beer, Old Rasputin, on tap, which we have not found at a single other place in the city. The food is tasty, and moderately priced. I especially like the pub fries, which have an over easy egg on top. The service can be spotty when it's busy-takes a long time to get noticed and served, even with an empty beer glass on the table. The staff are great, just not speedy, so don' t go in a hurry.

I love this place! They have tasty greek food from up stairs, the ambiance is great, and the beer selection is perfect (because they have Georgetown brews, too). It can get a bit busy, so be ready to wait for a table, but the staff will help you out. It's a cozy place for a great happy hour or a greek dinner.

Great laid back service and delicious, fresh food. Amazing beers to choose from and the atmosphere is exactly what you want. Love sitting at the long table in the front!

Great little quiet pub with a good selection of local and international beer favorites. Relaxed and quiet enough you can sit with a friend or loved one and drink a Real Guinness and play cards or even read a book. Happy Hour from 4-6 daily encompasses food from the restaurant upstairs with some Italian flavors. Keep in mind in the winter/fall that the pub is in a basement so somewhat dark and chilly. But the incredible wood walls, tables and everything else is worth the cold in the winter and even better in the summer.

An interesting combination Bookstore/Greek Restaurant/and Basement Pub up on 65th, this is a fun place for a beer, a snack, to do some Internet, or maybe buy or even sell a few good books. The bar doesn't have any windows but still has a warm and hobbitlike coziness. It seems like most of the interior, bars, and tables, was all cut out of one giant tree. Interesting. On tap you will find Mack and Jacks, Guiness, and a dozen or so other good beers, some local and some imported. We were there on a Monday and the place was pretty full. Seems to be a local favorite. The menu includes baked mac and cheese, burgers, Gyros and various bar foods. All good. Upstairs is the Greek place with a wider menu. The bookstore itself seems pretty good. I enjoy a place with lots of books that isn't part of a massive international chain. There were a number of people here with laptops; I didn't try the Internet but they do seem to have it. If you're looking Papas and Beer with drunk chicks falling down the stairs and people playing beer pong while yelling "Woot woot woot", this may not be for you, but if books and beer and a bar made out of a giant tree sound like the ticket, then this is your place.

I found this place two years ago when I was wandering down the street in Roosevelt. It feels like the inside of cabin with everything from the walls to the tables carved out of wood. It has not only a beautiful decor but also has great beer. The beer I tried when I was in was a smoked Porter. It was a twist on a classic and porter and boy was it yummy. The also had an IPA my boyfriend loved and got two of them. Try the dip plate also! I love Tapas style eating and the dip plate is for someone like me who enjoys that style. The music was good old school Bluegrass. The Bluegrass really complimented the atmosphere and it made cozy and warm. My only small complaint was the music was a little too loud but what are you going to do. Overall a super cute neighborhood pub for all.

This is the place where all your nerd and beer loving fantasies come alive. Since this is below a bookstore, this place has cool science topics being discussed every week AND ITS OVER A BEER!! How cool is it to see a drunk scientist discuss math (pretty much the most boring topic EVER) and science to a equally drunk crowd (or at least have lowered inhibition)? Overall the beer selection is awesome, the food is delish (small plates mind you) and the atmosphere is quiet so you can really talk about more important things in live (like taking over the world). The wait staff is hipster but cool and attentive. Next time, i need to take my Spock outfit here. Nerds UNITE!

I want to give this place six stars. This is one of my favorite places in seattle. It's also the only good thing in Ravenna, pretty much - besides the parks and the dogs. It has no windows because it's in the basement (I think), but that just gives it a warm cavernous feel. It's a great neighborhood spot, everyone knows my name, and the food is AWESOME. I started eating chicken because of their wings. It had been more than 20 years. They are that good. Sad for all of you (and me), they've (hopefully temporarily) stopped making the wings. Their other food is good too though. I recommend the mussels, the braised greens, the mac and cheese, the popcorn, even the pickled egg. But also, please join me in asking them to bring back the wings. Really great people work there, and it's a nice place to hang out for a couple hours, play chess, do some work or enjoy great company. I recommend it, whether or not you live in the neighborhood.

In town to see the daughter, and wanted a nearby low key place to have some dinner. This place satisfied that goal very well. The beer selection and the food choices were good. The steak frite mentioned in another review must have been a special as it wasn't on the menu when we were there. Drats, as that would have put a big smile on the hubbies face. I wasn't all that hungry so went with the pub fries- best rendition of poutine I've had. The egg and sauce were both hot- having them on top of really hot fries would have been perfect.

As I reflect on my time spent at the Pub at Third Place, one word comes to mind: Wood. There's wood everywhere! Doors, walls, tables, ceiling. All the same matching glossy wood. At first it was cool, but after a while I started to become afraid I was stuck in a horror movie scene at a lumber mill or something. But aside from the decor, I really liked this place! It's dark and cozy (no windows at all, in fact) and features a wall of books and games that you can borrow during your stay. The Boy and I opted to play Skip-Bo, our favorite card game, and even though we don't need to talk about who won, it was still a good time. We didn't have any food, but it looked like they had some good appetizer options for pretty cheap, and I saw a few yummy looking main dishes being delivered as well. Make sure you check this place out while it's still winter; I don't think it would have the same appeal when it's nice outside.

I have to preface by saying that maybe I was going to have a great night with my fiance regardless of the venue, but I think our stop at The Pub at Third Place was the cherry on top of a wonderful evening. We stopped in on a Friday night for some beers and snackage. The joint was pretty busy with lots of groups playing board games, but we found a private spot and ordered some good beer and even better food. I played (and won) Rummikub for the first time over a Meze plate of lamb skewer, warm pita, green olive tapenade, and kopanisti. The fiance had the same with hummus and the kalamata tepanade. The lamb was spiced wonderfully, and despite getting large portions of the dips, we nearly finished them all off. The green olive tapenade and kopanisti were the stars for both the fiance and me. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, they had Bob Dylan playing the entire time we were there, and the atmosphere of the pub as a whole was intimate and welcoming. I really liked the decor, too - from previous yelp descriptions I thought it might be a little more cavernous and dank, but the wood features and lighting (plus alcohol) made for a very warm ambiance. The cafe up top is my new favorite spot to study, and I can't wait to study late enough to have an excuse to visit the pub again.

This place feels like a thieves' den. Most likely hobbit thieves who love rustic wood decor. You enter through a solid wood door on the side of the building into a long wood-paneled basement space with tables and a bar top made from heavy slabs of glossy wood left in its organic form so the curves and knotholes remain visible. The closed-off feeling really works for this pub. The space is very cozy and would be a perfect spot to bring a date during fall or winter or you can settle in with a good friend and a beer. They have a great California cider here and also serve Greek food from Vios upstairs. Service is average to good.

  • Erin B.

This is a terrific neighborhood hangout. Warm, inviting, great selection of beers on tap, plus excellent food (for a bar!) from Vios' kitchen upstairs. The vibe is much more Ballard-meets-brainiac than Capitol Hill hipster. Trendyness leaves at the doorstep -- you could hang here in your PJs and no one would bat an eye. Seems to attract groups of game-players, and their collection of board games (Catan, Scrabble, Pictionary) attests to this common pasttime. Again, this is not a hip bar, it's just the best place to relax with friends, enjoy some good food and drink, perhaps play a game or two, and call it a night.

Walking into this pub is like walking into the inside of a wooden boat. Polished wood is everywhere and big hewn beams traverse the ceilings. Unlike some pubs, this place is not dark. The wood is all light-colored. Also I got the feeling it was remodeled after the smoking ban because I could not smell even a hint of old smoke. Anyhow, it's a great pub with a relaxed atmosphere. Upstairs is the fantastic Third Story Books, and perhaps it is not surprising that the mix at the pub seems like the sort of people who would also frequent a bookstore. If that's you, you'll fit right in at this pub.

I agree with the "comfy Hobbit Hole" adjective for this venue. The downstairs decor makes extensive use of enormous slabs of gnarled wood and massive carved timbers. The upstairs section is linked to the bookstore, and has a more open contemporary open cafe feel. Downstairs, acoustic dampening panels have been installed on the ceiling, but they can only do so much. When the room starts to fill up, it quickly becomes noisy and rambunctious. The servers that I dealt with were extremely helpful and professional, even with the level of mayhem that they have to deal with on "Science on Tap" night. Items from the greek-themed menu are tasty enough, but the servings are MUCH smaller than what one would normally expect for the prices. As a result, expect to spend upwards of double of what the same amount of food might cost you in a regular Greek café here in Seattle. I'm sure that I'll be back, but I will plan on having a hefty stack before or after my visit in order to protect my wallet.

This pub is a nice quite place to sit and enjoy a chat and a drink with friends. I would have rated higher but the food we ordered was not just terrible, it was completely inedible. Avoid the meat and cheese plate it is grotesque! We could not identify the mystery meat and it smelled so bad that we had to move it to the end of the table. Nice and cozy place with good beer, just order carefully if you are feeling peckish.

About as nice a place to go have a drink as you'll find. Decent beer selection, and the food is really good, although it may be slow getting to your table. However, you do have to fight through a loud sound system to make yourself heard, so it's not an easy place to have a conversation. Walking outside was such a relief.

  • Tranma X.

The Pub is a great gathering spot for people to relax, drink and eat delicious food. They only have beer and wine so its hard to get hammered, but you'll probably save some money as well. The bartenders are all cool, especially the super hot one. Always good music playing and a bunch of books and games if your anti-social, or don't have anything to talk about with your group.

Dropped in hoping to run into our pal Shorty the pimp. She is a bartender her on the weekends. This pub has such a cool vibe. It is academic, quite, cozy. People who don't know each other might strike up a conversation. I wish we could unearth this bar and move it to the Greenhood.

This place is frickin sweet! My husband and I have driven by for the last few years saying that someday we would go in. Well a month or so ago we did and I felt like my pub dreams had come true. Reading, beer and intellectual conversation, what more could a NW girl want?

On a particularly cold and blustery November evening here in Seattle, I was invited by a friend to meet up with her in her favorite pub in Seattle. The Pub at 3rd Place. I've gotta admit, I liked this place before I even set foot inside the door. Why you ask? Because of the DOOR itself. Kinda felt like I was stepping into a log cabin, a wilderness lodge, or a place called the Bigfoot lodge down in LA (cool spot if you're down there). The inside was equally inviting. Lots of craftsmanship went into the design of this place. From the finished wood bar, to the wrought iron-leg tables. Lots of wood all around. The books along the side wall made for a nice touch as well. (even though I really didn't peruse them much). A very warm and cozy feel to this virtually hidden gem. The Pub at Third place feels like something out of Lord of the Rings. I wouldn't have been surprised at all to see a Hobbit running around. Or if Gandalf himself had poured my drink. And speaking of drinks: fantastic beer list! Loved every one. And they've adopted the food menu from the Vios cafe upstairs. I've already had Vios' food before (see review) so I knew what to expect. Excellent stuff. Though I have to admit, somehow Greek food - although excellent - seemed like a strange fit for the feel of this joint. Just didn't really feel like a greek food kind of place. Nevertheless, the food was excellent. Only con: The service was very slow and almost non-existent if you weren't sitting at the bar. Probably because it seemed like the bartender was the only person actually working here (not Gandalf). A couple more staff would be helpful. Overall, a great place to meet with friends, enjoy a small bite and share in some great conversation over some excellent beer. No attitude here at all. I'll definitely be back! PS: Watch for hobbits.

Great beer selection. Friendly service. Wasn't too excited by the menu. The falafel sandwich I had was pretty bland, though the pizzas looked and smelled yummy. Love the decor and the cozy tables... you don't need to shout to hear each other like in some other joints.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you are running an establishment that serves food, shouldn't you know something about the food? A simple question of 'how is this prepared' should not be met with a blank stare overshadowed with annoyance followed by 'I don't know'. When I say running, I don't mean first day, unless this joint allows new hires to schedule the shifts of other staff members. I'll have to assume it wasn't his first day because we got to watch as the guy conducted an informal interview with one person while discussing who is scheduled when with two others - the entire time with his back to the customers (we got to see *a lot* of this guys back). I am also unclear why it was thought OK when two people order together, both have starter plates and dinner orders, to not only bring the starter plate out with the dinner plate, but to leave a 5 minute gap between one person's delivery and the other. I'm not changing by opinion to 2 stars ONLY because the bartender/server who replaced the older guy we started with was actually pleasant and professional, reminiscent of our first visit. Too bad the replacement was so late in the game. Additionally, the food was enjoyable (now that I've sampled more I think it is a little overpriced for what you get), once I gave up trying to associate the plate of food with the actual menu description (since when does a Lamb Burger come in the form of a log wrapped in a pita, spread with something from a jar?).

I wish I could give this place more stars. It's my go to place for the off chance of a night free. The food is good, the beer selection is great. But the service totally blows! Every time I have been, I've had to wait more than five minutes for staff to notice me. More often than not, I have to get their attention by going up to the bar to order. Rarely do I see them more than a couple of times when I spend two hours there. Once, an hour? Really? I can finish a beer in 15 minutes. I'm only given a menu if I ask for it. I only get attention if I stare long enough. I used to wait tables and bartend. I usually tip more than what is necessary knowing that tips are what pay the bills, not the pay check. It's rare that I tip less than 20%. Even for mediocre service. But the service here gets 12% if they are lucky.

Loved the vibe of being underground - very cozy. Will for sure go back...maybe in the fall. Service was good, beer was excellent and the other patrons seemed nice enough. I Didn't eat, however friends did and said the food was good.

This is one of my favorite hidden jewels of the Seattle bar scene for the dark, grey, rainy season in Seattle (i.e. any season other than summer). It has the cozy feel of a ski lodge, complete with beautiful exposed wood beams and fine, original craftsmanship all around. Honestly, the woodsy atmosphere is mostly what I'm there for. It almost feels wrong to walk in without slippers or order something other than a hot toddy. There is an entire bookcase of games for anyone to use and a good selection of beers. I'm not a huge fan of Greek food, but the menu items for Vios (in the bookstore upstairs) are tasty albeit on the pricey side. I've never had luck getting table service so now just dump my stuff at a table and head up to the bar. Once there, I expect a slightly -more-than-reasonable wait before the bartender takes my order but nothing too absurd.

I went here for the first time last night (which was a Saturday). I walk in to the basement of the Third Place to find lots of groups of 20-30 something year olds sitting around at oak tables....most of them are sharing pitchers and playing games (gin rummy, trivial pursuit, strip poker....haha made up that last one). Many of the people hear look like they have a college education.....how do I know this? I dont, just go with it. Anyways my group sits down with a pitcher of Hacker Pshorr and pitcher of some other amber beer. The selection on tap is well rounded. I get up to get some games off the shelf and notice a group in the back all with their laptops out, so I guess they have inet here. I grab the cards and make some loud obnoxious comment about how frikin stiffling hot it is in this joint. A young lad stares at me and looks like he wants to say something but just cant muster up the courage. Side note....ladies if you want to pick up nerdy shy men this is your place, there are lots for the picking. So I bring the cards back to the table and I suggest to the group that we play Knights at the Roundtable and the group scolds me and says "no way Courtney, this is not the kinda place you play drinking games!" After feeling like a child getting caught with their hand in the cookie jar I opted for scrabble instead. So I lost miserably at scrabble and I had no music to enjoy while loosing. Come on barkeep turn up the crappy jazz so everyone can hear. Therefor don't come to this bar if you want to play drinking games. Do come here if you want a quiet evening of card games/board games while drinking tasty brews. Oh and they close at 12 every night except for Friday.

A cozy, timbered pub in the basement of an independent bookstore? One block from my house? I couldn't believe it at first. Good beer, good crowd (when it's not empty -- aka weekdays), good rustic-cabin ambience, lots of ratty old used books lining the walls. The only downside is the food, which is not spectacular (if you want pot pies, go to Pies & Pints up the street!)... go for the mac & cheese or nachos. Decent happy hour.

I stopped in here for the first time recently when I had an hour to kill and didn't want to walk around in the dark and rain so much. I felt instantly comfortable. It's the type of place where you can sit at the bar by yourself and read a book while you drink a pint. They have a varied tap list and a decent happy hour - $3.25 pints! The room is long and low but the lighting is warm enough that it doesn't feel like a dungeon. The place is owned the greek restaurant upstairs and you can order food to the bar. I haven't had it but the menu looks good and the prices are decent. This is a good place to come on your way home from work for a quick drink or for a low-key night with a group of friends.

While I agree with others that service is slow, it is friendly just not especially attentive. The atmosphere is perfect for a date with it's cozy warmth - surrounded by the rhythm of conversation. I like that as a non beer drinker, there are some decent wines by the glass.

A couple of people used the word "hobbit" in their reviews, and since I, also, am going to make use of the noun, this confirms one of my fondest theories about patterns in the universe. To wit, despite chaos theory, there *are* patterns in the universe and when you recognize one you should take note, and if appropriate, take action. Action in this case would be to take yourself to the hobbit pub. Why a "hobbit" pub? Because it's low ceilinged, cozy, has great wood tables and just seems like the kind of place Merry and Pippin would spend most of their free hours while Sam spent time with his family after Frodo parted the veil. It isn't happy hour that draws people here since the place doesn't get really crowded until after that's over. It's a place to read a book, play a game of cards, get some knitting done, chat with friends, eat dinner and and surf the net while having a beer, all of which I've seen in the hobbit pub. The food comes from the Honey Bear Bakery upstairs and I was recently asked, in the middle of a conversation, if I wanted some time to make out with the bacon in my BLTA sandwich before resuming the chit chat. It was tempting, but a swig of my Rogue Hazelnut Brown brought me back to my senses. Don't forget to leave your thoughts about your beer of choice in the Beer Diary and don't forget to pay attention to patterns in the universe. Go to the hobbit pub.

Oh man.... after two months of hunting for a local pub, I may have found it. I moved from Cap Hill (15th) a couple of months ago after buying a house in the area. I used to frequent Smith, Tavern Law, etc.... and loved the proximity to so many great watering holes. It's been a rough transition living in a residential neighborhood (many perks, but this very noticeable flaw). It's possible though that I've found the spot. It's early in the relationship... and I've only had a beer there once, but was impressed. The decor is fun... a little like what you'd expect from a pub if it was in a Beatrix Potter tale. Wood... and plenty of it. The beer list is fantastic... and I have high hopes for the food after reading the reviews. My gal and I will be going back soon with our board game of the day in tote... to sample the eats and quench our thirst with some tasty Hazelnut Brown Nectar. Please, Pub @ 3rd Place... don't let me down. I need that local bar with the fantastic atmosphere, comprehensive tap list, and good food.

I joined up with some friends at around 6:45pm on a Saturday night. The place was deserted. No big deal, maybe it's a hidden gem. No such luck, the waitress acted like she couldn't have cared less about us being there and just sort of stood and tapped her foot while we looked at the menu. I'm not a huge fan of beer, but I did have their pear cider and it was pretty good. Hence the 2 stars instead of 1. The mac and cheese was bland and for $7 for a bowl I was hoping for something better, the top was cold and the bottom was searing hot. Seriously, Kraft would have been better. Overall I was mostly disappointed with the lackluster waitress and food. I'm really quite surprised in these times that a business wouldn't appreciate your business.

when i want wi-fi, write my stupid stories, and troll WoW forums, i come here. They are very accommodating when it concerns taps. i drank many a black and tan. for the tan, i ordered hale's cream ale, topped with guiness. the food is mainly greek and it's not bad for the price. scream for meat and they'll bring you meat. scream for a potato to be tortured like a witch in boiling oil and they'll bring it to you. with ketchup, even. the decor is all woodsy. and there was many a time, i felt like hemingway, trapped in a totorro's house, drinking away black and tans, the prose of the madmen, drunkards and liars, swelling at my feet, your own shadow boiling over, till you can no longer fight the overwhelming urge to punch an elf. it's just you, the laptop, the beer. life doesn't get any better than its simplicity

Genius spot for drinkin' and writin' (and 'rithmetic, if that's your scene) Cozy cafe atmosphere, but with libations. Nary an eyebrow is raised when I brandish my laptop while ordering an Old Rasputin. Outlets aplenty. WiFi! Stores of food to sustain your endeavors (the nachos wash down swell). When you need to stretch your legs, bound up the stairs for some blithe book browsing. And! The Pub hosts science talks to boot! Tra la.

This is neither a dive bar, nor a lounge. The Pub at Third Place is perfect for a drink and conversation. Or a drink and a book. Come with these expectations, and you will be unexpectedly pleased. The beer is good, the happy hour is better and the wood paneling is best.

I am surprised by the number of 2 and 3 start reviews. this place has a great beer selection (equal to latona and the like) and a good menu of mideast food that tastes fresh and is a welcome change from the typical bar food offerings. plus, yeah the decor is cool and i found the waiters VERY friendly. customers are likely just jerks a lot of the time. this is a great place to go if you actually want to talk and not yell at your friends over loud obnoxious music. i dig it.

Are you looking for a nice little pub that is kind of off the beaten path? A nice cozy place to relax? The Pub at Third Place is exactly what you need! During Fall, my boyfriend and I decided to try one new pub every Thursday night. After driving by Third Place everyday on our way to school, one Thursday evening we decided to stop by for a beer. Mmmm. It was wonderful! They had a really good selection of beers on tap ranging from your average light to dark. The bartender girl seemed really knowledgeable about the beers (I can't stand bitter beer... she made a great recommendation!) and was really friendly. The ambiance is really what did it for me though. I really loved all the wood... the wood staircase, bar, neat tree trunk like walls. The decor made me feel like I had been transported to another world... and what's better than being transported to another world with beer! Mmm. I have to give The Pub at Third Place five stars for its excellent ambiance, knowledgeable bartender and yummy beer!

After 2 years in the University/Ravenna/Roosevelt 'hood, I was sure I had discovered all of the noteworthy pubs. I was wrong. In fact, I had overlooked one of the best pubs around. The Pub at Third Place has an amazing beer lineup, which is key. I tried three beers that I've never had before, and the bartender was willing to answer my questions as I tried to choose my next pint. To top it off, prices are reasonable and they have happy hour all day on Sunday! The wood decor is like something out of a fairytale, but it's warm and comfortable at the same time. One wall is lined with books and board games, and there were some beer-related magazines at the bar as well. I tried the nachos and crab cakes as well and I'll second that they are fantastic. I would've liked a few more food options (I'm wheat-free, my bf is pescatarian), but the quality of the food made it worth the try. This will definitely be a regualr hangout for me from now on!

Really you don't come here for the fast (or even table) service. It's nice, like someone (maybe a hobbit) carved a huge redwood tree into a pub and hired locals (who have adapted the slow French countryside life of living) to run a freaking awesome place to drink and be merry along with other activities like reading, laptop battle, do board games or meet up with friends. I watched a middle age couple, come in and get so angry that noone came to help them, they were so pissed, and when a food runner came by they waved him down and tried to order beers without yelling at him. MY point is, don't come in thinking that you are getting served. Really DIY, get up off your bum and go to the counter. They are friendly. ps: The spinach lasagna is great.

I thought I'd somehow broken the time-space continum and had entered my best friends basement rumpus room some time around 1977. The big slabs of polished wood on the walls, the burl tables and the bar in a basement all have a good mellow 70's vibe. The only thing it needed was a Cheech and Chong album playing in the background. It's a good comfortable tavern with food available from the Honey Bear upstairs. A good mix of college students, neighborhood folk and a few stragglers from the bookstore upstairs. No bells and whistles here but it's a nice place to hunker down in a good conversation with a few pints and maybe some nachos.

Omigosh! It's back to the 70s...fitting for a location in the basement of the former original PCC. The pub fronts on NE 65th street and is part of Third Place Books. Happy hour runs till 6 p.m. with $3 pints and a nice selection of brews on tap. I love the hoppy beers like IPA and their Diamond is a good, if quirky, entry in this category. Husb likes malty beers and drank a couple of Rogue Stouts. The pub grub was tasty enough. We split their nachos, made with tricolor corn chips, then, switching continents, went for a calzone stuffed with sausage, olives and ricotta served with marinara. Our hirsute waiter with long hair and ample beard evoked the kinder, gentler 1970s...or even the 60s! Service was mellow. Fellow pub-goers looked like they all walked over from their Ravenna abodes: no hipsters here. One youngish couple brought along a Scrabble game. It's a low-ceiling-ed place, long and narrow, with a pleasant bar and tables made of huge hunks of wood. If you missed (or miss) the old Seattle: here it is!

My best friend wanted a logger fab birthday theme. I suggested the Pub at Third Place because I knew she would appreciate all the beautiful wood. I should have told her not to expect champagne but she was so thrilled by the Twin Peaksish vibe that she settled right down and joined in with me on a fabulous pitcher of Mac & Jacks. Our other best friend who completed our logger fab group was brave enough to join us in what I had previously referred to as my little Hobbit bar. This frightened her but she entered and was pleasantly surprised at the minimal style...and no creatures from middle earth. Just a very sweet bartender that the birthday girl affectionately referred to as "the yeti". I told her that wasn't nice but it was her birthday you see? He had lovely music playing the whole night. I must note also that the not birthday girl was not a beer drinker and became one that night! Wow! Lots of people talking quietly and playing board games. I was a little worried that we were interrupting the library vibe. (I tipped extra to make up for our raucous birthday celebration.) We ordered a big plate of nachos to share. Don't do that! What is the worst thing that could happen to a plate of nachos? Yep, not enough cheese. Just have beer for your meal. You'll want the extra room it's that good.

I LOVE THE HOBBIT BAR! I would give it 4.5 stars. It would get the full five if the drinks were just a little cheaper and the bar a little darker. The first time I went in this place there were only a few people there and the music was off because the bartender wanted to watch The Social Network. SO DOWN. The service is always friendly and quick. I love that practically the entire bar is made of wood. It's super cozy and a great place to hang out, have a couple pints you couldn't get just anywhere and have a relaxed time.

This place is pretty cool. The food is good, the beer selection is good as well. The atmosphere and crowd is laid back and the decor is great. As mentioned in other reviews they are a little slow so if you're looking for a quick bite and beer this is not the place. However, if you're looking to kick it and play a board game (which they have tons of) with some friends over drinks....this is the spot.

Upstairs: Fab bookstore that I gave five loving stars. Downstairs: Pub that looked very cool. As soon as I walked in I thought it looked like somewhere the Hobbits would hang out. It's all wood and cool lighting. Like it was carved out of a tree trunk. People. Why can I not get a f*cking drink in this town? Is there something about ordering drinks in Seattle that I don't understand? Can they smell the California on me and that's why I get abusive bar staff in this town? It's like I'm wearing a sign that says, "See how much abuse I'll take just to order a goddamn drink." Ok, here's what happened. I sat down and assumed it was table service, since neither of my male companions offered to get me a drink or pushed me in the general direction of the bar (either of which I would have been fine with although the former being much preferred). So I sit there for a few minutes and almost forgetting about the fact that I don't have a drink and the bartender comes over and says something along the lines of "Did you want to order a drink?" I can't remember exactly what he said because I was so taken aback by the tone. Let me explain. Imagine for a moment that you are in the Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton and a smelly homeless person walks in wearing only a cowboy hat and rubber duck on his privates (maybe you live in San Francisco and you don't have to imagine that because you've seen it). Anyway, the homeless dude comes in and he smells just horrible, of human filth and rotten fruit. And he sits down at a table and starts munching the free bread and drinking the free glasses of water. He's scratching his but and smelling his fingers and farting and burping at the other diners. The head waiter comes over and says, "Would you like to order anything, sir?" Now. You can imagine the kind of tone that would be said in, right? The sheer loathing dripping from every word? What they are really saying is, "I'm about 5 seconds from dropping your nasty ass right onto the curb. Now we can do this the nice way, or we can do it the hard way. What's it gonna be?" That is the tone that the bartender used with me. I wasn't offended or angry. I was, well... kind of scared. I thought the guy was going to throw me out on the street. He acted like I'd done something horrible. Dude, I don't know the procedures for the Hobbit Bar! Anyway it just kind of left me feeling a little weird so I was like, "Um, no, thanks, I'm going to leave..." and then I quietly backed out the door and ran to my car and locked it behind me. Yikes. You know, even now I'm kind of scared to give it less than 3 stars because I think the bartender might try to come find me. I don't KNOW about the Hobbit Rules, I don't KNOW!

well i have been here like 3 times now and maybe it is just the hillbilly in me but a place that is all wood all over the place and that has good beer should have a better menu. really lamb at a bar. maybe large chunks of rare red meat hanging would make me happy but i think they need to realize that not everyone likes weird ass food when they are at the pub cause when i read pub lamb kabobs never come to mind. ok enough bitching the staff is nice and the place looks cool. so go there and enjoy. the best part is that you can hear each other when talking. and the BEER

Me likey their falafel pita. I've had it twice and it's tasty. You have easily drive past this pub a million times on 65th but stop by and try it. I've been coming here for a few years now (before Vios had a cafe in it and took over the pub menu) and I enjoyed this place. It's got cool wood tables that look like cross-sections of knotty wood and they're kind of odd shapes. It's just something different from your run-of-the-mill bar table & chair stuff. Service ain't bad here. I get my drinks, I get my food, and they ask if I need any more of either. That's pleasing to me. All the other dishes I saw patrons enjoying looked good so I'm confident Vios has some good stuff going on in the kitchen department. This is a chill place that I like to go to when I want to have an actual conversation with a friend, rather than yell over a loud scene. This place is consistent and relaxing. No complaints.

It's taken me a long time to write a review because I feel very conflicted as of late. If you like a chill out comfortable place with a good selection of beer on tap, then this is it. The food is good, although, not as bar like or cheap as it was when it first opened. Lots of regulars which says a lot, and not the skanky kind. Recently though, management has decided that they want to discourage children from eating in the "bar" area. They are allowed down there, but management will not let you bring a high chair down. The thing that gets me though, is we happened to have a high chair and were enjoying our meal and drink when the manager sent someone else to do his dirty work and take the high chair from us. Nobody needed it, but I guess they'd rather disturb paying, longtime, loyal customers, whose son was eating purchased food, than have a kid eating with the adults than with the other kids. At first it didn't bother me, but It's been eating away at me. So, while everything is great there, we don't go as much which hurts the people who don't make those decisions. I hope management knows what they're doing. I know a lot of people don't like kids around, but there's plenty of places to go like that, and this will never be one of them. I say, let it be the place that the neighborhood obviously sees it.
