Hands down the best pizza in Seattle!! The service is excellent and the food is always on point. The house salad is a great starter with fresh ingredients and an awesome dressing. All the pizzas are amazing so you can't go wrong!!

there is a reason this pizza spot is called 'the independent.' it's only open 4 hours a night, 4 days a week with zero concept of customer service and ok pizza. after waiting nearly an hour and a half for a single pizza on a non busy night, the waitress offered no apology nor any nominal discount. however, she did return quickly with out bill and said, no rush.' when we inquired with her, she directed us to the owner who gave us a bs excuse about how it was challenging running a small business and that they operate on small margins. we wish the independent list of luck with this ingenious business model... serve mediocre pizza, provide horrendous customer service along with ridiculous wait times and top it off with excuses! they did get one thing right... their margins will indeed get smaller since we are never returning.

This place was really intimate and quiet, but that doesn't always prove to provide the best service. We had only one server in the restaurant with all of the tables full. We were sat at the same picnic table as another couple who had been their previously. Felt a bit awkward because they were fully engaged in their meal and didn't seem too appreciative of our presence (although we don't bite!). The food itself was decent. The Caesar salad is something I would skip out on because they skip out on the dressing. The pizza is that, pizza. It was good crust and fresh toppings. All in all, we have tried to go here for years (awkward hours for the location) and I wouldn't say I was "wow'd" by it.

Family in town and we visited the Madison Park area, surprised to find a decent pizza place at family member's recommendation. The pizza here are about $13-15 for a personal size, and thin crest is the way I like them. I rarely eat pizza outside of New Haven area these days, and this place is definitely a decent match. I particularly enjoyed the (forgot name but similar to Martguerita pizza) pizza the most. While the Stevenson(?) is not spicy as described, and the Syracuse is actually slightly spicier and tastier. Next time I will try their white clam pizza as well to see how it fares against the traditional New Haven pizzas. =)

Charming little spot with a quality product. The pizzas are thin while not being too crispy and the cheese and toppings come in unique combinations that taste just as good as they sound for the most part. For a small independent restaurant in Madison Park, the prices are entirely too reasonable. Given their location and atmosphere, I could see the pizzas being a couple bucks more across the board without me batting an eye (that's not a suggestion from me, just an observation). I would feel comfortable coming for a casual after work drink, a friendly meeting, a romantic outing or even takeout (the one that usually happens). It's a quaint neighborhood spot with charm to spare. If you enjoy a lighter pizza variety and the option to enjoy some wine in the open air near the water, you'll probably have a fantastic evening. I wish the hours were a bit more robust and sometimes I wish my pizza would be a bit heavier on the toppings, but there is a lot to love overall about this place

Lengthy reviews are great. But this review will be short and to the point. Pizza was very good, but nothing spectacular. Not any better than other artisan pizza places around the city. The breadsticks were a joke. 2 pretzel-stick sized breadsticks for a buck. Seriously? How about enough for a party of four at least. The WAIT was terribly LONG and the service SLOW. Even the lengthy 5-star reviews say as much. Beer list minimal, and please get rid of the cheap-ass mason jars. They are not hip, just annoying and give the place a sense of cheapness. No take home box They give you a sheet of tin foil. Really? 3-stars for decent pizza. Update - One year+ after the review above, I gave in to some friends and returned to the Independent Pizzeria. The pizza is still decent. A good tasting pie. The WAIT EVEN LONGER then the first visit. Seriously, get a second oven Independent Pizzeria! We were a party of four. After a 60 minute wait, only one pizza came out. The second pizza 30 minutes AFTER the first. Then, 20 more minutes later the remaining two pizzas came. Seriously, WTF!? One positive note, they have glasses now for drinks and not mason jars.

Being the Epicurious.com (and 8234830 other food subscriptions and newsletters) junkie that I am, I saw they named this place in their list of "Top 10 PIzza's in the U.S." Now, that's a bold statement. The first thing I did after seeing that was bookmark it to try asap. Actually, I did that second. I drooled first. Came here last night with a friend. We didn't wait longer than 15 minutes to be seated. Ordered the Caesar salad to start which was so, so good. The lettuce was crispy and fresh and had just the right amount of herb vinaigrette dressing which lightly coated each and every piece and sprinkled with parmesan that was so fresh and delicious. This salad had the perfect amount of crunch I had three full helpings and friend had 2. I ate the rest. I could eat this salad every day for the rest of my life and not get tired of it. Each order comes with x (enough) slices of pizza to have leftovers. I purposely ate a small lunch and worked out extra hard at cross fit to make room for as much of this as I wanted. We ordered the Syracuse with anchovies and the Beta. We couldn't decide which was our favorite. After having each pizza alternatively, I finally decided I loved the Syracuse because it had bold, salty flavors. It wasn't like, "ew there's so much SALT on this" more of it had a salty quality which made it delicious. The capers, olives, garlic complimented each other so well I may have experienced the first legitimate flimax (food climax) I've had in a long time. Friend liked the beta better. The Beta had more simpler flavors but the swiss chard, provolone, and garlic balanced each other fantastically well and provided a depth of flavor you don't get anywhere else. The swiss chard had a nice texture. It wasn't mushy, watery, or flaccid. With a few dashes of chili sprinkles, and I couldn't stop eating. I took 3 slices home (wasting pizza is a sin). We skipped on the dessert because neither of us had room left in any stomach compartment. If I had room, I'd probably have ordered both desserts (don't judge, I do this all the time. seriously). This place only has 4 tables and a few seats at the bar. If you come at a peak, mass hunger time you may be waiting a while. You can order a drink and wait, or they will call you when the next table is available. I adore the feel of this place. The space is It's cute, quaint, romantic, and smells so freaking good. I wish they made pizza scented candles. When you walk in you're immediately greeted with the smell pizza so divine it's unforgettable. The longer I waited for a table the more excited I got. Let me tell you, it was well worth the wait. I really enjoy the plethora of toppings they have to offer. Everything from arugula (rocket) to basil. They have you covered. The dough is unforgettably no thicker than your laptop screen and the sauce is herbalicious and flavorful without being overbearing. I almost didn't want to write about this gem in case there's a crowd overload next time and I don't get a seat. It's ok. If that ever happens, I'd take it to go =) When I opened my fridge this morning, the smell wafted out and into my nose which reminded me I needed to return asap. Best pizza in Seattle you ask? That depends. It's a relative question. I haven't been blown away by any pizza thus far (including Serious Pie and Via Trib) so yes, I'd have to agree with Epiciurious and say it IS the best pizza in Seattle. 4.5 Stars because service was a little spotty. Everything about this place is perfect (except they need to relocate into my building)!

SLOW. That was the theme of the night. Took about an hour to get a table for 4 people - no biggie. I understand it is a small restaurant. but then when we sat down and were informed it would take about 45minutes for the pizzas to be brought out. A little unnerving but we had already committed to this pizzeria. It did indeed take another hour and 15 minutes to get our pizzas. Pizza was good! Nothing terribly special but good! Solid crust and toppings but i expected more from the long wait. I thought things worth waiting for were better but oh well! Other notes: Small beer list Small cider list Waitress was nice but a little clueless

I'm torn- good pizza, but slow service with no communication.. If you don't have an hour to wait for your food, go elsewhere.

  • Julia V.

Love the variety of pizzas they offer. The first time we went there the waitress had to go over their fancy vocabulary on toppings they put on their pizzas. Service was kind of slow but if you have the time it's very cute and intimate.

Best artisanal pizza in town. The place is tiny and the service is slow but sit down, grab a beer/ galas of wine and get the salume plate.

I was willing and prepared for the long wait times that I had heard about. I was not prepared to be "greeted" by an unfortunate blonde woman who was possible the rudest host/waitress that I've ever encountered. Because it was busy, she asked if we'd like to sit at the bar or wait for a table. After giving us maybe one and a half seconds to think it over, she snapped "it's the best seat in the house". She then most obviously rolled her eyes, shook her head and mouthed "whatever" as she walked away from us. Needless to say, we left immediately and will neither return, nor recommend the restaurant. Evidently, customer service, or common human decency, is not a top priority for this establishment.

We'll we have been waiting so long I'm leaving a food less review sitting for 50 minutes for two pizzas isn't worth it...

I'm breaking my hiatus from Yelp to write this review for The Independent Pizzeria because I'm absolutely in love with this place....it's cozy and darling, and the people are sweet, and the pizza is the best in the city...probably the best I've had anywhere actually.

  • Wanda M.

It's a great location, even on a windy night. Our drink order came after the salad and we had to ask for them. The Caesar salad was fresh, but lacked Caesar dressing flavor. When the glass of wine arrived, it was in a wet glass. Who likes water with their wine? The pies are good. Crust is crispy and nice flavor. Toppings are fresh. Would I come back? Yes, the pies are good and I noticed other tables did not have drenched wine glasses.

  • Jen E.

I think they have a tiny oven that cooks one pizza at a time. The wait here is long. Very long even when the place is half empty. 4 tables in the early evening and I'm still waiting on my pizza... 50 min and counting. A party of four was just seated next to me and was warned by the server that the wait is at least 45 min for a pizza. And it doesn't help that the server is rude to kids. Eek.

I must admit that I frequently resent Independent for being closed on Mondays (because for some reason I always crave it on Monday); however, I won't be one of "those" people who lets this be the reason for my lack of 5 stars. I will just let this be your FYI that, unfortunately, they are closed on Monday. Sigh. Living a block away from Independent, I will say it is so refreshing to have a local pizza place that does not feel like a chain whatsoever (I am looking at you, Pagliacci). There are plenty of pizza options, and if you dine in, they also have an enjoyable selection of wine (not very extensive, however). I have found that one single pizza is the perfect amount to split between two people if both of you are relatively hungry. It is definitely more on the thin crust side, however, so order more if you are starving. I also LOVE the salad at Independent. By "love the salad", I really mean "love the salad dressing". I would order it by the bottle if that were an option (is it? note to self: call about this tomorrow). Another FYI: the "bread" is really just grissini, so don't be fooled by that. While the seating options are pretty slim (about 15 people can fit inside plus about 6 more outside during the summertime), it is a really charming place to go for some wine and pizza. My one complaint is that I have had a few instances where I placed an order for pick-up and my pizza was not very warm (and consequently did not taste as fresh). I am not all that picky so this isn't anything a quick microwave session won't heal, but it is something to take note of if you are placing an order for pick-up.

The pizza was just meh, nothing special. The Cesar salad was quite nice and refreshing although it came after our pizza because the kitchen overlooked it. The bread was bland and dry with a burnt crust. The wait was forever and no one came to refill our water. We will definitely NOT be going back. Very disappointed.

I have so much love for this place! We went over the summer, which I have to recommend since the place is pretty small adding the outdoor seating really helps. If I lived nearby I would definitely get take-out. The dough was incredible. Ingredients were all fresh and delicious. Salads were delicious, pepperoni pizza perfect. Great, now I'm craving it right now!

What a little gem at the end of Madison Street!! Was in the neighborhood and decided to try it out. NOT DISAPPOINTED!! Everything was delicious from the crust, to the sauce with a teeny bit of spice, to the fresh toppings to the rootbeer on tap. Will definitely be back!!!

  • P. B.

This place is so cute and the pizza is probably some of the best in Seattle. Think thin, European style pizza with some great varieties. The salads are excellent, too. But this place runs out of dough, so don't go too late!

  • Thia G.

The sign of a great pizza is all in the pizza dough. Any fool with fresh ingredients can create a good pizza without much skill, but the mark of an amazing, out-of-this-world pizza is all in the dough, and a true measure of the chef's skill. That being said, Independent has the best pizza EVER. In the world. It's so rare to find such thinly crusted pizza with as much crispiness and crunch as Independent. Too many times have I had "thin crust pizza" where all the ingredients slide off with one bite or one cut, and the dough is simply soggy and limp (maybe flaccid is a better word). Yes it's a small place, but if you plan ahead you'll be fine... and they've only recently reopened in the past month so I would expect some of the complaints re: service and other such things to be worked out in time... All in all... go for the pizza (dough). I promise you won't regret it. P.S. If you don't know what to order, get pepperoni with arugula (not on the menu). You can thank me later.

Everything about Indie Pizza comes together to hit 5 stars! Here's how the 5 stars come together: 1) The dough...oh the dough! It's so well done. It's chewy and thin and the perfect vehicle for all the well curated ingredients. It's actually one of the issues, because they only make a certain amount and when they're out, it's shut down. 2) Perfect toppings. The pepperoni is salty and crispy...and perfect! 3) It's such a quaint neighborhood spot. The ambience is nice, approachable, and is not meant to accomodate huge audiences. It's tucked away in Madison Park for a few to find. 4) They show pride in their work. For quite some time, the owner was the only one who handled the pizza. It's nice to see that he's brought a few under his wing. 5) Fantastic salads. The salads are simple, well balanced, and exactly the way to start a great night of pizza! Love the classic caesar best! Only issue: It's not open enough! I need access to pizza ANYTIME!

Now probably my favorite place to go in that neighborhood (Madison Park). It's a REALLY teeny weeny tiny place - but with TONS of character and spunk. Everything we had there was DELICIOUS. Favorite pizzas: Norwalk, Farmer, and the Mushroom. The Pepperoni pizza was meh. The dessert was surprisingly delightful. We had the chocolate wafers with raspberry whip cream -- awesome! Definitely will be back.

The best pizza I have ever had. There is nothing better. The owner take serious pride in his craft. Awesome!

  • Rachel T.

Wow! This place kicks ass. We just got take-out and it was divine. The pizza is soooo good, super high quality ingredients. Neapolitan style, which obviously is the best - delicious crisp/tender crust. The takeout salads were even great. The pricing is beyond fair (in my opinion). There are comparable places in SF (where we're from) that charge twice as much for the same size. I will add...we ordered right when they opened and still had to wait an hour. So don't go or order if you're like totally starving. This point is a bit worrisome for future dining here, but we'll try to plan a couple hours ahead - it's worth it.

We went last night and ordered the Syracuse. I'm pretty sure this was the best pizza I've ever had. Really good crust, perfect combination of toppings and not too much cheese.

  • Shannon M.

This is by far the best pizza I've had in Seattle!! Tom crafts every one with true expertise and Artistry! I have never had anything I didn't like! The friendly and quirky staff makes the experience personal and memorable! Also their dishwasher is bangin' and makes the best salads!! Definitely worth the drive!

  • Adriana K.

Great location and outdoor seating! A lovely summers evening with delicious root beer (on tap!) a delicious ceasar salad bursting with flavor (not usually a salad I would choose) with house made matchstick bread, and two delicious pizzas! They were ok with my dog on the patio - and service was friendly, although it did seem to take a length of time to get our food - we overheard our waitress apologize for the long wait to the table next to us who had clearly been there from some time. We tried the biscotti gelato for dessert which was sooo good! Simple menu and offerings but well made and worth the wait!

    (4)
  • Jake M.

Just incredible. All the ingredients are top notch! Everything is made to order super fresh. The Queen Pizza and Roman Pizza are SO delicious. Highly recommend, you won't be disappointed ever!

Second best pizza in Seattle. We enjoyed the wine, the service, the space and the pizza very much. Yet , it still doesn't hold up to Cornuto. You come sooooooooo close. If only your dough could hold a little more weight.... It would be perfect. My mother was a pizza cook for 29 years.... It's all about the bubbles and the bottom. Yall got the bubbles, work on the bottom.

  • Meegan Y.

The topping selections are amazing and the dough is crispy & chewy. A definite must try is the spicy Stevedore if you like some heat on your pizza.

  • Angela S.

The pizza was seriously just okay. Definitely not worth the wait. Also, it was so loud in the restaurant that it was uncomfortable. Another couple left saying it was just too loud for them, and I wish we had followed their lead. We waited for a table. We were not offered a chance to order drinks. We were not offered water. We were seated after maybe 20 minutes, and it still took a while to get water. We ordered. The waitress stood across the table from me, and couldn't hear me when I practically shouted a question at her. She made me repeat more loudly, rather than just walking over to my side of the table. We ordered 4 pizzas. They brought one we hadn't ordered. We insisted we hadn't ordered it, then just said "whatever" to them. They left it. They charged us for all 5 pizzas. Let me repeat that. They charged us for the pizza that we didn't order. Wine glasses emptied early (the oven really does cook like 1 pizza at a time, and takes forever), but refills were never offered. I won't be back.

My post is two stars based purely on the service....because we never actually got our food. I sat waiting in line behind three people at the register for several minutes, only wanting a pizza to go. The only time anybody acknowledged us was to tell us to get out of the way as the waitress walked by three times. The first two people finally walked out tired of waiting. The third guy finally asked how long it would take to get seated...45 minutes. The chef finally asked if he could help me and I said I was hoping to get a pizza to take. He said it was looking like an hour (he said it nicely). I replied that I didn't really have an hour to hang out, but thank you. The guy who had been standing around sorting tickets finally acknowledged me by say "ok, then bye". It was just a completely rude experience. The place is only big enough to seat 10 people. There is no reason you can't serve 10 people and still be friendly toward new customers checking the place out. I eat pizza 3 times a week, but I'll be sticking with Pagliacci's. You only get a 2nd star bc it actually looked like a cute place with good food.

I've been there before a long time ago. and i remember it as being fantastic. we went on a friday night right after work. we got both salads and the mushroom and other veggie pizza. they use square for their credit card payment processing and i'm not sure i like the implementation of it. not sure if their specific implementation was their design or not. the small intimate setting is definitely foodie fantasy come true.

  • Vanessa W.

We walked in the first time but we were told that their pizza were sold out. So we went back the next time again, we ordered the Norwalk and the Stevedore pizzas! And we love it! The place is right next to the beach park, so we often go after an afternoon walk in Sunday during summer time :)

  • Jeff P.

I don't come here as often as I'd like, because the end of Madison is a bit out of the way, but that doesn't change the fact that this is one fantastic pizza place! Great location near the lake, delicious pizza. There's a trend in pizza places, at least in Seattle, to serve official Neapolitan style pizza, and jack up the prices to match the fancy certification label from Italy. Don't get me wrong, I love many of these places, but the last time I was at Independent, I noticed a sign explaining their philosophy and reasons for not joining getting the certification, and I realized that I was paying about 2/3 of the cost of some other places - $4 draft beer and $10 cheese pizza, and it easily matched or beat those places with the certification. One note of caution. Even of Independent isn't busy, you may end up waiting awhile, because it's clear that the locals have discovered this gem, and your pizza may be behind a long line of takeout pizzas, as happened to me recently. Don't fret, enjoy a couple of $4 drafts, wine, or soda. It will be worth the wait!

I tried Independent for the first time last night. We started with the Caesar Salad which was super high quality and definitely worth ordering. For my main I had the Twin Peaks pizza (with mushrooms and sage) and it was delicious! The crust was crunchy yet chewy and they were very generous with the toppings. I would say that the Independent definitely holds it own against some of the best "artisanal" pizza places in Seattle. Why, then, only four stars? Well, this place is TINY and it literally seems like they can only turn out one pizza at a time. We went as a group of 8, which admittedly, was probably not the best idea. But it took forever for our pizzas to arrive, and what I hoped would be a quick dinner turned into an almost 3 hour affair!!! That is just crazy (especially for a Thursday). Also, the space itself is pretty minimalist. For eating in, I much prefer the lovely Bar Del Corso in Beacon Hill. A few final nit-picky things: 1. The name is kind of generic and awful. Seattle is filled with independent pizza places...that cannot be your claim to fame. 2. I am so over mason jars being used as cups. Especially for beers. This is a pizza place!!! Ok, all that having been said, I will definitely be back to the Independent, but probably just for take out.

The neighbourhood is quiet and charming.. The joint is rustic and relaxed Dough is perfect, toppings fresh and delish.. all in the best pie i've tried, and add to that a 10-12 dollar per pie fare = best all around pizza joint in Seattle. Awesome.

We live in Madison Park and have been eyeing this place for a while. The restaurant has a nice feel, but it's quite small. We had to sit on a side couch until a table opened up (cute, but not an ideal eating environment). We got the Roman and Norwalk pizzas, as well as a caesar salad. Everything was quite tasty! I can't say it was the best pizza I've ever had in my life, but it's solid, and a way better deal for gourmet pizza than Pagliacci. I especially enjoyed the pile of arugula on top of the Norwalk - a nice flavorful touch. On a side note, this pizza doesn't keep very well, so don't plan on having amazing leftovers. I attribute this to the fresh ingredients (the arugula and spinach wilted). I'm not positive, but I think I saw one of the chefs go pick something outside and use it on a pizza... now that's fresh.

Loved the crispy/chewy crust. If your idea of good pizza is an inch of crust and an inch of toppings, you won't like this. The wait staff was incredibly helpful with our pizza and beverage selections. We were three people with three different pizzas (and a shared large salad) so we'll have to come back to try the rest.

This pizza place was awesome. Great service, great food, really tasty. Limited beer selection but it works. Had a good time with some friends of mine and we tried half the menu. Pizzas are on the smaller side but they taste really good. No complaints.

We just moved from Philadelphia and I'd heard bad things about pizza in Seattle, so my expectations were very, very low. But I was so pleasantly surprised. It was cute, quaint and fabulous. Service was a bit slow, and the lights were a little too dim, but I was willing to look past that when we got our food. These aren't NY-style pizzas, so if that's what you're looking for, keep looking. They are more, handmade, wood-fired pizzas that are just a bit bigger than the personal size. But everything we got (kids got the plain cheese, husband got the pepperoni and I got one with spinach, cheese, arugula and artichokes. YUM!) was fabulous. Plus, they have a great selection of beer on tap and root beer on tap. LOVE THAT! So glad we have this in Madison Park.

I am so glad that I finally got to eat here the other night! The pizza is pretty good with fresh, high-quality toppings and a thin crust. It's small inside the restaurant with a handful of tables and bar seats, but my boyfriend and I were able to get a table without having to wait. I look forward to coming back again soon. The only thing is you have to eat your pizza quickly if you want it hot because it gets cold faster than most pizzas, probably because they're served on a plate instead of a hot pizza pan.

Best pizza in Seattle. Love the Syracuse pizza and the chevre+honey appetizer. The pizza is perfectly balanced. Thin, crispy yet chewy crust, delicious sauce and amazing toppings. It's also super low key and not pretentious like some of the other quality pizza places in Seattle. Occasionally the wait can be a bit long on the weekends but we just dig into the mixed salad with super garlicky dressing to tide us over. Just awesome.

You know what's really good? This place. Go on a nice sunny evening cause the sun will pour into the big windows! Get a bottle of wine, they're all really cheap. And oh, it's not on the menu, but they'll throw a little prosciutto on any pizza, so you'll probably want to have them do that.

  • Vicki L.

Biiiig letdown :( As a disclaimer, I am a huge fan of delicate, thin crust pizza, so portion size doesn't bother me here. However, what DOES bug me is when pizza places totally stiff you on toppings/ingredients. While I understand the concept of napolean-style pizza, I really can't sit comfortably with being charged $20 for two individual-sized pizzas with scant sprinklings of basil/garlic (even after I requested extra basil!). The two stars are for the customer service (which was great) and the crust (also pretty good), but for the price point, I feel like they could be a bit more generous. My boyfriend's pizza was also slightly burnt, with a couple of huge "bubbles" that had burst and had left huge burnt craters of emptiness which disappointed him :(. On top of that, my pizza was EXTREMELY greasy, which was off-putting. It took three paper towel sheets to soak up the excess oil, and even then my pizza still had a "sheen" to it that worried me. I really wanted to like The Independent, especially since there are so few good pizza places around my house, but sadly I can't award this place more stars simply because I feel like you don't get enough for what you pay.

  • Alison A.

The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because out of 5 times of trying to order pizza here we have only been successful once. The reasons were either an absurdly long wait time (2 hours generally) or they were closed. I believe they're only open Wednesday through Sunday. BUT! Finally we persevered and successfully ordered two pizzas and they were great!! Upon walking in to pick up the pizzas I realized why the wait was always so long - it is TINY inside - only about 4 tables inside. The pizza is great - very small. One pizza is really not enough for two people. I couldn't finish the whole thing, but my husband and I got two pizzas and had enough leftovers for one and a half of us later on. Very, very reasonably priced in my opinion. Just over $10 per pizza. Overall, if there's a reasonable wait, it is worth it. I only wish they had a bigger pizza oven and delivered :)

I'd heard good things about this place and was curious to give it a try. In a nutshell, the pizza was as great as we expected it to be, but the overall experience wasn't as good as we hoped. We arrived at 7:30ish on a Wednesday and there were several empty tables and two waitresses, but the staff seemed so busy cranking out the take-out pizzas and dealing with those customers that they weren't as attentive to the dine-in folks. It just seems like they need a better system, like assigning one of the wait staff to manage all the take-out orders and one to wait on tables. I got the sense that they weren't clear on who should be doing what and it created a chaotic environment that made it difficult to have an enjoyable dine-in experience. All of that being said, the pizza was truly some of the best I've had in Seattle and, if I lived in the neighborhood, I'd probably be ordering take-out from them, too. But...I don't think I'll be making the trip from Capitol Hill again because I can find decent pizza and better service in my own neighborhood.

Their pizza is delicious! They have plenty of pizza options for those who love artisan pizza. We ordered a cesear salad and procuitto pizza. Both were very tasty. I would definitely come back for their food. Our servicer was friendly. I did notice that they write down the time you got there and how long it took you to eat on the receipt. I am assuming it is because people have complained about how slow the pizza come out. Luckily, we weren't in a hurry so I didn't bother me that it wasn't super speedy, but I find it tacky to put the wait time on the receipt. This is a great place to meet up with a friend in an intimate setting and have wine and pizza. It is a small place so you may want to make reservations. On sunny days, they have more space because they open up the patio.

This is the pizza of my dreams. I had high expectations going to this place after being told by all of my bosses and fellow employees that it was the best pizza in town...and that's coming from a restaurant that I feel also does a very good pizza. Adding to the expectations we waited a good hour...or more until the pizza finally came. We ordered two different pizzas, the green pepper and sausage and the smoked motz, leek and pancetta. I liked what we ordered because they were so unique and delicious in their own way, both so good that we couldn't decide which one we liked better. You can tell that they care about each pizza like it's their last one, so much care and thoughtfulness goes into each pizza. The ingredients like any great Italian restaurant is #1, care for them, put them together in the correct way and voila! But that's an understatement of course, the combination of leek with the smoked motz was one of brilliance, any fine dining chef would love to come up with. What's also great about this place is that it's small so the attention can be placed on every small detail, and if you don't like to wait a while for high a high quality pie this place isn't for you. You also get a sense of a communal eating experience, yes the tables are separated but you can hear the chatter...people waiting in anticipation then raving about their pizza like its a price of foie gras. Another thing that I love about this place is that they're doing their own style pizza and not to stand out from all the other million pizza joints but because it's just better. It's not quite traditional Neapolitan and it's not like NY style but it takes the best of both. The crust is thin and a touch chewy but not soft towards the center like a lot of Neapolitan pizzas that I've had, it's honestly perfect. And the cheese isn't greasy and overpowering like a lot of NY style pizzas that I've had, it's perfectly balanced with very high quality cheese. I wrote this three days later and I have been thinking about this pizza since I finished the last bite and it's still extremely vivid in my mind. This is my new 'benchmark pizza', the one that I will judge all other pizza up to. We also really wanted to try the desert panna cotta with gelato but they ran out of panna cotta, next time, I will be back!

The pizza at The Independent is simply delicious - the fusion of tomato sauce, cheese, tasteful/unique toppings, and crust is quite heavenly. My wife and I have had the Stevedore, the Norwalk, & Twin Peaks - all top notch, European-style pizza. You can tell that the toppings are fresh/high-quality and not just grabbed from a plastic bin like in other places. For two people, you could probably eat 2-3 pizzas + a salad and waddle away quite satisfied. Tasty local beers and high-quality wines are also available. The owner used to work in the wine business, so he knows what's up. Highly recommended even if you don't live in the neighborhood. The space is cozy w/ lots of natural light.

Independent Pizzeria had their grand opening in Madison Park on April 23rd. They are at the very end of E Madison Street on the corner of 43rd. We went the day after their opening. The restaurant is very eclectic with different chairs, tables, and menus throughout. There is just one pizza maker, and a couple of wait staff (who are very friendly). The menu is very simple. There are a few pizzas on there (one size to choose from) a salad, and beverages (wine, beer, and soft drinks). The pizza is really fantastic. Better than any pizza I've had in Seattle yet. They are still working out some of the kinks in being an efficient restaurant, but given how good the food is, I suspect they will do just fine. My only concern is that there isn't much seating inside, and once this place gets popular it might be a bit of a wait for a table.

The quality of the pizza is excellent and in the summer is a fantastic place to have a light meal. The only downside is that once it gets busy the wait times can be very long due to all the take out orders.

Love it here. Amazing pizza, friendly staff, comfortable environment, and I love the way they keep the doors open in the summertime and you can sit out on the little patio. Wish they had a better selection of salads to eat before the pizza, but that's a small complaint.

We love neighborhood restaurants and so after trying this restaurant over 10 times....we decided to no longer eat at the Indendent. The wait time is horrendously unreliable -- sometimes it is quoted as 15 minutes and the table is ready in 45. We have been seated, ordered and then waited 45 minutes to receive the pizzas due to an influx of take-out orders. The food is ok, not as good as Tutta Bella, Mopisto, Flying Squirrel. We have ordered pizza for carry-out about 10 times and eaten in the restaurant about 7 times but have started only going to Flying Squirrel for pizza close by.

Finally decided to write a review... I think we've been here a solid 6+ times now, both dine-in and take-out. As a lover of the thin, Neapolitan style pizza, I think I've been to every pizza place that serves them in Seattle. Or close anyway. Independent is solidly top three. Serious Pie, Delancey, and Independent. Their pizza is that good. The ingredients are fantastic, the center of the pizza has never been soggy (my pet pizza peeve (triple alliteration!)). Highly recommend The Farmer ... prosciutto and a soft egg ... amazing. The beer and wine list is very solid, and very well priced. And you get beer in a mason jar. +1. The wait can definitely be long. Pains me a bit to say it, but I think they just need to sort out the to-go orders versus dine-in orders issue. It's a tiny place, and everyone there is busting their tails. It's just physically limited on how fast they can get the pizzas in the oven. Still DO NOT let that stop you. Expect a bit of a wait. Talk to you friends. Enjoy your time. Slow down. The pizzas are most assuredly worth the wait. This would be a five star review (and is a 5 star) if it wasn't for the occasional wait.

We waited approximately One hour and 30 minutes for six slices of bland pizza. If we were forced to wait that long for pizza, the pizza has to at least taste like pizza that's worth throwing away your night. We were warned beforehand there would be a wait of 30 to 45 minutes for the pizza. But one hour and 30 minutes for one order of pizza? We ordered an appetizer of plain grilled bread with olives immediately when we sat down. We couldn't have imagined that we would have to wait 45 minutes for plain bread and prepackaged olives - no one informed us this would be an issue like the pizza. We kept being told false statements like "your pizza's coming out soon" or "in a few minutes" so we patiently waited and at that point, we had invested so much time already that we couldn't just get up and leave. As if that wasn't bad enough, no one came by our table to see if we'd like a second order of beer or wine. My husband even placed the empty can of beer right at the edge of the table to see what the waiter would do. Nothing. And the apology only came after we had waited so long rather than proactively trying to make the situation better earlier on. It's such a shame because the space and location are fantastic and parking is easy, but almost one hour for plain bread and 1.5 hours for six slices of pizza, we can't risk throwing away valuable time again.

I love small businesses / restaurants, so this place was right up my alley. Cozy with small tables / bench seating, mason jars for beers (they also had wine), and yummy handmade pizzas. The crust is a little thinner and crisper as you normally find with wood-fired pizzas, the tomato sauce is super fresh, and mine, which was the Beta, was yummy with gooey provolone, dark green swiss chard, and little slices of crispy sausage. My husband got the Stevedore with Salami and lil Mama's peppers which was also delicious. Each pizza was a little bigger than 1 person serving - we each took 1 or two small slices home, so I could see two people splitting one pizza and getting salad or something - or order two pizzas and take some home, because leftover pizza is always good! The major issue with this place is since it's so small, it can be a wait - a wait for a table, a wait for the pizzas (their production capacity doesn't seem to be very high) - as long as you go in understanding that and are willing to wait or have some appetizers / drinks in the interim, then everything is great. If you are starving and not super patient, this is not a great place to go.

I read an article about the Independent Pizzeria in the Stranger and since it's in my hood, off we went. To seat 4 we were told a 40 minute wait because the place is TINY. On top of that, we were told that because of the larger number of carryout orders, there would be an additional 40 minute wait for our pizza. Since we were already there and they had beer, we decided to stick it out. First of all they only serve 3 kinds of beer, that is until they ran out of what I was drinking and then they only served 2 kinds of beer. Secondly, don't let them fool you. A larger salad is more than enough for 4 people. Ordering 2 was a major mistake despite their recommendations. I mean really, how much lettuce does one really need!? Okay, so an hour and 30 minutes into our "visit" our pizzas came. Thin crust, minimal toppings, but decent flavor. Not even close to greatness. Lastly, came the $115.00 bill. You see, what had happened was, they made us wait so long we drank like 5 beers a piece! Pizza should never cost me that much. I am not sad that I went, but I won't go again.

A pleasant surprise in the middle of white bread/white shoe (dare i say Republican) Madison Park; a funky little pizza joint which lives up to it's "Independent" name. The menu is short and sweet: salads, antipasti and pizza. The pizzas are individual size and made to order so it can take some time (there's also a healthy takeout business). We had a State Fair and a Parma pizza and both were excellent - thin crispy crust and yummy toppings. I thought the side salad was very good but my chow partner found it boring. The pizza is "Neopolitan" (open fire oven, thin crust, small diameter, quality toppings) without the sogginess of several of Seattle's more famous such establishments like Via Tribulani or Tutta Bella. What the place needs in order to be a great restaurant is at least one more staff member (tables went unbussed and the sequencing of pizza and salads was erratic) and the same care with the salads (good ingredients and careful preparation) as goes into the pizza. UPDATE: They still have not solved the staffing issues. We recently ordered takeout and were told it would be a one hour wait. OK, not ideal but we waited. Upon arrival the pizza had not even been started and we were told it would be another 45 minutes! This place will not last unless they can figure out how to provide timely service whether dining in or carrying out.

This is going to be my most practical post ever. Get olives and salad to start, order enough pizzas so you can take some home. Wash down with a beer or soda, and have dessert...or two. Enjoy 80s & 90s music. While I didn't have to, it's worth the wait, and will be back.

I love this new addition to the Madison Park food options. I have been here four times already, once as take-out. The pizza is awesome, the beer and wine selections are local and they carry Bluebird's chocolate pudding ice cream (to die for). All of there pizzas have been great, but we normally order the Stevedore. My only complaint is that the service staff just always seem confused. I don't think that they have their systems down yet. For example, when I tried ordering take-out, it took over forty minutes and I was assuming it would be 15 min considering how slow it was. I was never told how long it would be, which would have helped because I would have gone and done something else. The girl ringing me up seemed to be running around trying to figure out how to ring it, where the receipts were, finding and putting away the menu. She seemed very stressed for how slow it was. I hope their staff figure out some simple procedures so that they can be more efficient before they get bombarded by the summer crowd.

So, I love The Independent pizza! I agree with some of the other revues that 2-3 pizzas will leave two people stuffed, but just one is not enough! The Pizza is great, so flavorful and it's obvious that the ingredients are fresh and high quality. There pizza sauce is so tasty! There pepperoni is on point, I was in love at first bite. There are two reasons I didn't give The independent Pizza five stars: 1. They are only open Wednesday-Sunday. I wish they were open more! I always want it on Monday and Tuesday, because I know I can't have it! 2. They have a small staff so it is easy to feel neglected and you get their voicemail a lot if ordering takeout. Despite these two drawbacks I still love Indie Pizza because when you do get to speak to the staff the are friendly and the pizza really is just that good.

The pizza is, without question, delicious. It surprises me that the negative reviews on here are generally about the wait. It is an extremely small operation and the staff there seems to be doing a very commendable job considering the publicity and popularity it has garnered in a short time. To the 1 and 2 star reviewers (which should be taken with a grain of salt) learn some patience! Or for that matter, some common sense. Those people are ALWAYS hustling, and trying to get a small independently owned business off and going is no easy feat. I have a lot of empathy for The Independent, and a lot of hope. America needs more businesses just like this. Embrace the wait, it's a great space and ideal for conversation. In short - If you're in a hurry you may be disappointed. Call Domino's and save your negative reviews though IMO. The pizza here is fantastic!

Really wanted to like this place. Great location in Mad Park, near playground and water, cute venue. Wait was ridiculous!!! We waited over an hour for two cheese pizzas. Seriously?! We were apologized to as they had a run on take out orders, but you know what- figure out your operations. Get another oven. Tell the to go order their wait will be an hour-whatever. Bummer as the pizza tasted good but would not go back until they figure out their flow. We eventually paid our bill and took our pizzas in to go boxes and ate at home. Our toddler was a trooper, but couldn't sit for more than an hour. Do NOT go there unless you are sans kids and have the entire evening to chill. Not a fast paced place. Bummer. Hope they pull it together.

Very good pizza, this will be a new favorite of mine. The crust is delicious, as well as the crushed tomato sauce. We ordered three different pizzas in our group and everyone loved theirs. I ordered the Roman and "veganized" it by leaving off the mozzarella and having them add their vegetarian pepperoni. It was by far the best vegan pizza I've ever had! It had spinach on it that had been sauteed in garlic and that, along with the crust and sauce literally made the pizza! Yes, it's a tiny place (maybe only 6 tables) and the staff is new and still has a lot to learn, but the pizza is great!

Great atmosphere, great pizzas. A perfect romantic place for a date. The only thing I would recommend is getting a reservation or going early- It's not a good place for more that 4 people because its small and can get backed-up, but if you're ready for an extended cozy dinner it's the place to be. Perfect for a two-person dinner. Lots of families go there, so it can get noisy, but it's a very laid back and yummy meal.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to pizza. This is mostly because I like the crust done a certain way, the cheese needs to be bubbly to the point that it's almost burned atop a tasty and required-to-be fresh tomato sauce. A friend recommended this place ot me as a cozy nook to go on a date, or just sit at the bar and chat it up with the staff. The restaurant is open on very rare, odd hours but it's worth stopping by for takeout or dine-in. We split a mushroom pizza which surprisingly appealed to me. I loved the brick oven-charred crust and earthy flavor of the mushrooms, not to mention the fact that it was perfectly cooked. I love that the wine and dessert list are chalk-written on a board and how neighborhoody the place seems. It's ideally cozy and hidden. I have since gone back and been pleased with both the service and the food, again. To top it off, I asked if I could reserve a portion of their restaurant for my 10 person birthday party and expected them to say it wasn't possible since their place is so small but the host was responsive and graciously accomodating. I'm looking forward to a great intimate evening with delicious pizza and red wine. I'd definitely recommend coming here!

I am from NYC, and no, you could never get a true NYC slice here because that pizza is infused with the essence of the city itself, the water, the air.. there's nothing like it. Thus, I have not really enjoyed Seattle's Pizza in the 16 years I've been living here. There's the really squishy variety, and then there's the thin burnt kind, and somehow you try to find something in between that can satisfy that singular pizza urge.. I do like the Veraci pizza at the Ballard market, though its a little too thin and goopy. Via Tribunali is prohibitively expensive for what they serve, which, depending on the location and time of day is fair to middling. We decided to check out the new place in Madison Park, and I have to say, it was absolutely delicious. The exact right thickness of crust, the exact right flavor of sauce. It smelled so good all the way home and then we dove into it, and didn't leave a trace. No, it wasn't NYC pizza, but it satisfied me the way NYC pizza does somehow. It was well made and surprisingly delicious. The service was great. No fuss no muss... The wait was minimal, and best yet, the price $8.00 for the same size Via Tib sells for about $25.00, was perfect! This will now be our go-to pizza spot.

Rock solid pizza - one of the best I have had in the country......but be prepared - there is a reason the line is long and the waits can be nuts on the weekends.... but it is well worth it - the owner Tom is the only one making the pizza and he truly qualifies as a true pizzaiola - each pizza has his personal touch in it!

  • Pierre G.

I dined here on a Friday night and had to sit at the bar facing the pizza oven; I believe the pizza maker is owner Tom Siegel, who, in his glasses, and sideburns, feverishly shimmys and shakes when flattening out the pizza dough - reminds me of a Whirling Dervish or Joe Cocker at Woodstock - Caesar Salad [$4 for a half portion]: Definitely order one of these; its fresh, crisp and perfectly dressed its got zing! also the portion is generous for the price - The Stevedore - $12: tomato, provolone, Genoa salami of Applegate Farms, red onion, Mama Lil's peppers ; I was informed that my pizza would take 45 minutes to arrive; it came in 35 - you'll get 6 small slices its a thin Crust the salami tastes artisanal [a good thing] the red peppers give it a good spice kick some will quibble with the portion size at this price so choose your toppings carefully... the room is small; there are only 7 tables plus the bar seats, which were uncomfortably hard; Its loud when full; The wait can be long on the weekends so plan accordingly

This is the BEST pizza I have ever had in my life - and that is not an exaggeration. I have traveled all around the world, lived in Seattle and Northern California, and have never found pizza better than Independent's. The marina sauce is savory and light which pairs perfectly with the crust that is crisp, thin, and salty. There is always the right amount of cheese (not too much, not too little) and is very high quality. The toppings are always fresh and unique. They even have vegetarian pepperoni which is so flavorful, even meat-lovers would like it. They have done a great job creating a pizza menu that is varied and combines toppings that are not traditionally found in pizzerias but always delicious together. You really can't go wrong with any of the pizzas because the basic ingredients, preparation, and cooking methods (wood-oven) are perfection. When your pizza comes don't forget to add some chili flakes and sea salt which is already conveniently located on your table. I would also recommend getting the house salad, which is incredibly delicious as well. The vinaigrette is bursting with flavors of garlic and herbs. They have a great selection of wine, as well as extremely cold beer from a keg (who does not love that?!) Service/wait was mentioned as a negative here, but it is a small restaurant, run by the owner and a few other employees. They are doing it all themselves from the cooking, waiting, to running the actual business-side of things. And, they are great people on top of that! So, give them a break and wait it out because the pizza is 110% worthwhile. (I would wait days for this stuff). Basically, if someone asked me what the last meal of my life would be, I would answer with a meal from Independent Pizza.

I am SO excited to have an alternative to MadPizza finally in our neighborhood. My hubs and I both had the Steverone, mine without cheese (a special request) and his as-is. We were both delightfully pleased with how fresh and light the pizza is. Hand tossed, fresh made, tasty sauce and all without any of the Madison Park sass. We also had a simple green salad which, just like the pizza, is light yet tasty. While it has a touch of the Madison Park mark-up (but nothing in comparison to the other restaurants in the Park), the food is definitely good eatin'! And the best news (for us as new parents) is that you can call in your order to pick up.

If you don't like the pizza here there is something wrong with you. I've been around Italy, I know good pizza. We went with 7 people and had a great time. That's about all you need to know. This place is such a gem I almost don't want to tell you about it.

okay so this place now tops our other local pizza favs!! we finally made it there tonight & had the Beta with Sausage & the Syracuse sans anchoves. both were delish with a crisp but chewy thin crust. we also had the yummy garlicky green salad & the bluebird chocolate icecream (first time for me). the wine/beer choices were good/inexpensive & service was very friendly. the place is tiny, barely 6-7 small tables - we got the only 2 seats at the bar at 7 pm on a Sun night!!

My partner and I ate here on Friday, after seeing the write up on Serious Eats. We were a little apprehensive that there would be a long wait because the write up came out that day, but both being east coast transplants we will do almost anything for decent pizza. When we arrived the hostess/waitress told us she could seat us right away but there was about an hour wait for pizza, we said that was fine and decided we could bide our time with antipasto and beer wine; which is what we did. We ordered the Salume and the...the other antipasto which I can't remember the name of. Both were amazing, the different kinds of prosciutto were exceptionally good as was the fior di latte. For pizza we ordered a Roman and a Beta, my partner liked the Beta more, I liked the Roman more but we agreed that more taste testing was necessary before a final decision could be reached. This place is amazing, great crust, great ingredients, great toppings. I'm so excited that they do take-out and are in the neighborhood!

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
