We live on Alki and SunFish is the best place to get Seafood. Bring Cash!

As a Seattle native I've eaten a fair share of fish and chips. I love halibut. This is by far the best fish and chips you can find in Seattle. You can tell before you go inside it's going to be great-there's no bad smell from old oil outside and the fish is fresh and firm, not soggy or soft. If you'd like something that's not breaded, try the Sunfish Special, it's a kabob like fish meal. Yes, you pick up your meal from the counter. The place is run by 2 very nice Greek men and wife or sister. They are there from dawn cleaning and prepping and still working late at night. Bring cash! Credit is out. Smile, they'll will smile back.

Sunfish is family owned and operated. foods are always fresh and on point. The Sunfish Special - fishkabobs are amazing. the fries are fresh cut, the deep fried oysters, shrimp, halibut, down to the clam chowder always comes out hot and fresh. also sittin on a prime corner spot at alki - its a great place for a cool seattle day for some hot chowder and a nice view. though the menu is a bit pricey for the portions you get - but when it comes to seafood - you get what you pay for. and this seafood is always fresh!

The owners of Sunfish are slightly reminiscent of Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi". No fish for you! Some reviewers steer clear of the somewhat surly demeanor, but I find it to be more on the entertaining side. If you want them to be super friendly, learn Greek. I bet they would invite you to join their family. I don't come here for the smiles, I come here for the halibut. I am a fish connoisseur of sorts. I have been coming here since I was a child and the halibut has always been fresh, piping hot, and absolutely delicious. The breading that they use is absolutely amazing - super crispy, never soggy. The flavor of the fish is so perfect, that it really does not need any enhancing, but if you so choose, you can use some of their tasty homemade tartar sauce or some malt vinegar. Like others have said, it is a downside that you have to pay with cash, but that is somewhat expected in a small, family-operated business. It is also a downside that they close during the winter to go back to Greece. I want delicious halibut year round!

Sunfish never disappoints. Don't get fish and chips anywhere else. Forget Ivar's unless you're downtown and want to feed seagulls. The fried salmon is beyond delicious. The service is fast and friendly by the original owners. These guys are grateful for your patronage and show it. There's a reason this place has been around for years. Go! Take cash or hit a nearby ATM at the Alki Market. They are cash only.

Best fish n' Chips, from a Brit in Seattle. I have tried many other fish and chip places and this is the best. In England, we have one large piece of fish not several small one like Seattle does. This is the only place where I will get fish, as although it is in small pieces, it is not a tiny amount of fish with tons of old batter coating it. The batter and fish taste amazing, as do the chips. I have to agree with other yelp fans that cash only sucks! I would have been here 80% more if they took debit. They are loosing out on a lot of business taking cash and I am not going to be charged $3 at an atm that is not my bank, just so I can eat here. Great food :) - Cash only :(

I love fish and chips. The staff was nice and delivered dinner to our table outside. The tarter sauce is homemade and super delish, same with the cole slaw. Clam very good, though, not as good as mine. The fish was very fresh, not greasy. The fries same excellent. All the fish joints on Alki are priced basically the same but this is the freshest and the yummiest for the money. The only bummer is cash only. I understand the banks charge huge fees for usage to small businesses.

Very good. Light batter on fish and chips. Didn't feel like hell after eating fish and chips - and I usually feel like hell.

As I look back into time with reviews here on Yelp, I've decided to do Sunfish some justice and put my 5 stars on it. Hands down, the best Fish & Chips Seattle has to offer. Just ask for their best catch of the day and order it. They have pretty good preparation and everything always tastes fresh. Can't go wrong with ANYTHING on the menu. Order away! DON'T FORGET THE VINEGAR!!! It seems to be a Greek style recipe, but it compliments the food just perfectly. It's definitely something special. Greek Salad is good if you have the extra cash to eat healthy. Tasty with the Greek salad dressing. The people that run this place are super friendly. Good vibes and good people!

To be fair, I have never eaten here. But, I can't bring myself to try it. After seeing the employees hanging out back smoking cigarettes, I am completely turned off. It speaks volumes about hygiene and attention to detail when it comes to food.

One of my all time favorite fish and chip joints. Nothing fancy, just great quality fish. The coleslaw is really good as well. And if you are not into fried, definitely try the grilled fish and prawn kabob with onion and peppers. $15.95 but a huge portion! Just be forwarned, "cash only"...

  • Julie G.

Sunfish is pretty darn awesome! I've been twice now, and the only thing that keeps it from being perfect is that they are cash only. My new favorite is the Sunfish Special, a big ol' halibut kabob with two smallish prawns, bell pepper and onion. Add a good squirt of lemon and it's amazing! Comes on top of fries, but pull it off quickly to keep your fries crisp. I've also had the fish & chips, and they rival Spud's place in my heart (less gut bomb inducing). Staff has been nice to me, even subtle touches like pulling a chair away from a table to make room for my wheelchair. Bathrooms are accessible, but may be hard for someone with limited hand function to use. I can see myself coming here quite often!

Fish and Chips places do not get more than 3 stars. This means Sunfish is near the best it can be for its kind. We sat outside on this sunny Saturday, when Alki is at its best, teeming with joggers, walkers, dogs, and kids. Seattle's spring sun is mild and sleep inducing. The owner is Greek, said my table mate who has frequented this place for over 20 years. The fish are fresh, oysters and shrimp flavorful, and fries crispy. Fish are only lightly battered so they don't feel greasy. The flavor is even better with its nice garlicky vinegar. So I am a fan now. But 3 stars still.

Sunfish, one of Alki's many fish and chip eateries. This was the last fish and chips place on Alki that I've tried, also my least favorite. The best part was the fact that the dish was nice and hot. The prices were on par with Spud's, but the service is pretty surly. The workers don't seem happy that you've come in there to eat. I don't think they said a word to me as I ordered my food nor did they say anything once it was done. The tray of food was thrown up on the counter and I had to "assume" what was up there was my order. I'd much rather eat somewhere else for Fish and Chips.

Awesome: - The fish was very fresh, delicious, juicy, and cooked perfectly. - The batter was crispy and tasty, not at all greasy. - The clam chowder was some of the best we've had - You can choose how many pieces of fish you want - You can choose between halibut, cod, and salmon for your fish - Fried seafood makes up the majority of the menu - You can get a kabob if you prefer your fish not battered and fried (as if!) - The coleslaw was delicious and went well with the fish Not so awesome: - Cash only, and it's a little pricey - The two guys behind the counter (we wondered if they're brothers?) are a little surly, and not overly friendly. - Parking nearby could be a little tricky on a crowded summer weekend Proofreader Nitpicking: - There are 4 different signs above the counter insisting that you let them know beforehand if your order to go. Overkill much? - It is a "huge" pet peeve of mine when people use quotes incorrectly. - Kalamari instead of Calamari, maybe the owners are Greek? I'd definitely go back again. Yum!

  • Alison V.

I had some halibut and chips here. I thought they were a bit overpriced, but it sure was yummy. I just can't justify spending the amount they ask for fish and chips when I can get them at other places for the amount but with more quantity. The man working the counter was friendly enough and the food came out fairly quickly. The vinegar here is deeeelicious - they have a plain bottle and a bottle that has garlic and peppers and such in the vinegar too. I suggest using that one and enjoying the extra spice and flavor it adds to the meal. A bonus is that this place is super easy to get to by the water taxi and free shuttle! Warning: CASH ONLY!!

  • Heidi W.

Melt-in-your-mouth halibut kebobs, grilled to perfection shrimp kebobs and not-skimpy with-the-clams clam chowder. This fast-food looking joint towards the end (or is it the beginning) of Alki beach is one of my all-time favorites in Seattle. No thrills type place, but consistently delivering top notch seafood, and well prices at that. Only takes cash, and the older (Greek) dude behind the counter is not attempting to be your best friend, or even be overly hospitable, but who cares?! Bottom line: Great "boardwalk" seafood place just off Alki beach - not too greasy, and very tasty!!! Doesn't get much better in my book.

  • Jens J.

Mind you, the reason you come down to Alki is not going to be because of great food on the strip. It might be, instead, to breathe the fresh salt air and gaze at the Olympics or ships and ferries passing through the Sound. It was great down there this evening. So, food is a secondary consideration at Alki. I picked Sun Fish and ordered three pieces of halibut, chowder and a large soda (well, they call their large soda large, but it's actually rather svelte). This totals up to just under $20, and I didn't even order fries. The halibut was fresh-tasting, tender and came with a very good bread crumb coating that was light, and not greasy. The tarter sauce was creamy, but lacked zip or any real flavor. The chowder tasted only like heated milk. It had a slightly gelatinous texture, with hardly any clams. On the other hand, they give you plenty of saltine crackers! Uh oh, they don't take debit or credit cards anymore (even if there is still one if those little machines sitting by the cash register) But yeah, for quick fish and chips at Alki, Sun Fish works out okay. If you do choose to eat inside the restaurant (myself, I'd rather go down by the water with my eats), seating is ample.

Best fish and chips in Seattle. They do it right and with quality. Owners are friendly and personable. If you like cardboard on a shingle go to Spuds down the street.

I do love the quality of Sunfish's food, but $34 for 2 for fish/chips is excessive......

    (2)
  • Rocky E.

Good food but a bit expensive. My problem is the that the old farts that work/own the place are such dickheads and rude to customers. I won't reward them with my business. Go to Spuds or the Celtic Swell on Alki for Fish and Chips. I haven't been back in 5 years and won't go back.

  • Denice R.

I know the owners of Sunfish have been fishermen since about the time of dirt and they really do know their fish and seafood. I'd say it's the best fish on the beach and definitely the best fish and chips on the beach, but (a) it ain't cheap and (b) it's not the best fish and/or fish and chips I've ever eaten. If you want a two piece fish and chips and a drink it'll set you back around $13. If you add chowder and a salad add at least $8 more. But that's a lot of food for one person. The location is prime for water and beach views and they have outside seating. Unfortunately, the persona of the grumpy guy behind the counter puts off a lot of customers. He's probably really a teddy bear of a sweetheart. But ... when you're the first point of reference for a business grumpy ain't good. I'd probably eat here more often if the service came with a smile :-D

This is the best fish and chips place in all of Seattle. The two Greek brothers that own and operate the place are great.

It's the big question every time a few friends want to have fish and chips at Alki - where to go, Spud or Sunfish? Every time we go to one or the other, we are pleased with the product and the discussion invariably begins - who is better? Spud or Sunfish? When you're eating one, you think it's great and can't remember if you like the other one better... with this dilemma in mind, a few friends set off to settle the score once and for all - and by settling the score, we scored each in a head to head taste test - on neutral ground, a picnic table next to Lady Liberty. We had 4 people - 2 gals, 2 guys and we taste-tested cod, halibut and chips from both restaurants... The scoring was done by a point system - with things like: Crunchyness of fish batter, tender fish, moisture of fish, flavor, greasiness, etc... all rated on a scale of 1-5 with a total possible of 80 points. Here's how they stacked up: Tester 1- 73 to Spud, 57 to Sunfish Tester 2 - 80 to Spud, 60 to Sunfish Tester 3 - 76 to Spud, 62 to Sunfish Tester 4 - 74 to Spud, 69 to Sunfish Tester 1 noted Sunfish staff was not friendly at all and that would keep him from returning even if their food was deemed better. It should also be noted the Spud food was ready about 10 minutes quicker than the Sunfish food. So, there you have it folks, sure, they are both good but, Spud is the hands-down winner in this age-old dispute for best fish and chips on Alki.

Sunfish is mine and my husband's FAVORITE fish and chips in Seattle. Spuds always gets all the hype, but we think Sunfish is just better! Their clam chowder is soo good. The two guys who own the place can be a bit harsh and a tad scary, but once they remember you a couple times they loosen up a bit. They really are nice, just be nice to them!! And yes... it's cash only... and ever since the bank took out the BECU cash machine down the block it has been a bit harder; we have to think about getting cash before we get down there, but it's always worth it! We'd go there before Spuds any day!

  • Egnog P.

Great fish and chips place. A little expensive for what it is. but you can off set the price by looking Greek and they will give you an extra piece of fish. I apparently do, my two other friends weren't so fortunate.

  • Joan J.

We've been going to Sunfish for several years; the only truly worthwhile fish & chips place on Alki. It is high priced as the owners/chefs use only the best quality ingredients. The owners are from Greece and have had this restaurant for years; those who complain about their demeanor are welcome to go elsewhere. Their Greek salad is wonderful as well as their fried/grilled fish kabobs. Just don't go on Monday as they're closed!

  • Brian P.

The fish and chips here are great. The fish tastes fresh and light and the vinegar is packed with peppers and garlic, I can't pour on enough. The owners have always been spiky and have just got worse over the years as they age. If you don't mind being treated like an annoyance to get your hands on some delicious food, you will have a great dining experience. But, if you let these curmudgeons get to you, you may not go back. I just chalk it up to a life full of fried fish and very little interaction with the opposite sex. Just enjoy the fish and thank goodness that they are there to serve you...day after day, after day, after miserable day. Spuds has great fish and chips too, but I don't believe they have the magic vinegar that Sunfish has.

Great fish and chips. Poor fellow patrons, one of them stole my wallet which was accidentally left in the ladies room while I took my daughter to the bathroom. The owner was nice and took down my number but if anyone knows anything or has seen it, I would like my wallet and ID back, surely the cash is long gone. Great restaurant though! See my craigspost here for more info and THANKS! seattle.craigslist.org/s…

I ordered Combination with salmon, which included salmon, oysters, prawns, and fries. There was no waitstaff, so I grabbed my order from the counter. There is indoor and outdoor seating, both of which were utilized by many customers. The entire thing came out super fresh and hot. The salmon was well-cooked and very fresh. The oysters were good, but very fishy (expected). The fries were merely okay, a little too greasy but softer like I like them. Overall, great place but not exceptional. **Cash only**

  • Erin M.

I have to say, if you're a true fish & chips connoisseur, you'll know immediately upon walking into Sunfish and seeing their product that it's sub-par. Having said that, boyfriend & I fell into the trap yesterday, and paid the ridiculous $13 for a measly three piece cod + fries basket. The fish is reminiscent of frozen fish sticks and the clam chowder is actually potato chowder with 1 clam. Sunfish is definitely not worth the price, I suggest checking out Spuds down the street. Oh yea, *CASH ONLY* So not worth it.

  • Cheryl R.

Truly one of the best joints for fish and chips in all of Seattle. The batter is NOT greasy, but even if you don't like fried fish (and oysters, salmon, shrimp, etc.), there is a great skewer of grilled fish that you can sample instead. The salads are good, as is the tartar sauce! The two (Greek?) brothers that run the place may seem surly at first, but turns out they're just two sweethearts who make really GREAT food. If you frequent their restaurant, they'll remember you on your repeat visits. I love coming here w/ my 3.5 yr old daughter in the evenings for a meal we can enjoy together, then a nice walk on Alki beach. A real West Seattle treasure!

  • Harper H.

We were able to sit outside on the walkway and watch the water and all the people go by. I ordered the fish and chips while my husband ordered the seafood kabobb. My fish and chips were good, but nothing like Spuds where I wish we had gone. The vinegar wasn't as good as Spuds either. My husband liked his kabobb and there seemed to be a lot of fish on there. I think his was $14 or $15 and mine weas $12. The food was okay, but I don't think I will be back if I want fish and chips. Tip--they only take cash or checks so be prepared.

I am picky when it comes to fish, but when I got the hankerin' its either here or Catfish Corner I go to. Really fresh fish, and great location on Alki. Nice to take a stroll and get some fish n' chips. Staff is usually very friendly and have gotten pretty large portions of fish, or if you get a two piece and one is on the small side they will give you three.

I've been coming to Sunfish for years now. When I lived up by Greenlake, I went to Spuds and then continued with it here on Alki. It is pretty darned greasy. Sunfish, on the other hand, has a very light batter and it is not greasy at all. I realize that some people like a thick, heavy batter but not me. Good fish does not need to be hidden. As for the no credit card policy, I am fine with that. Do you realize how much the credit/debit card fees are for businesses? There is a bank machine just a block away if you need cash! The notations that people make about "no eye contact" or "not friendly" in regards to the owners are really quite silly. Sure, they are all business but if you engage them in conversation, they are very pleasant and actually love to tell you a story or two. It may be a bit more costly than some fish places. Quality costs a bit more!

Really disappointing after what I've heard. Got the Fish n Chips & clam chowder. I lived in Boston for 10 years, but didn't expect New England quality. Certainly didn't get New England quality. Expensive (considering what you get) Mediocre The clam chowder was an absolute joke. Spud's has my vote between the two. Only good thing I can say is the consistency of the fish was good. That's it.

I really, really, really enjoyed Sunfish. I walked in one night after work and saw they don't take credit cards, apologized to the owners that I didn't have cash and started to walk out. He asked if I had a check, I said yes. He asked if it was a good check, and I knew I found my place.... I told him yes, he asked if it was local let him know I only lived a few blocks away. I ordered the Halibut and chips, and decided to live a little and get some cole slaw too, a little over $17, more than I would normally pay for fish and chips, but I got the Halibut not the Cod and ordered 3 pieces (they gave me 5). I write my check, grab my bag (which came extremely quickly) and walked home. Was so tempting, I stopped at a park bench and ate the first piece. Kind of buttery tasting, but not like there was actual butter on it, just a great flavor. I don't like heavy breading, so the very thin coat of breading was great. Not greasy (unlike their competitor a couple of blocks away). Got home, ate the fish, it was so good I forgot there was tartar sauce waiting at the bottom of the bag, so I saved that for the chips which I split with my ever loving and patient dog Pete. He however got none of the tartar sauce, it's waiting for me to make me tuna or something cause it was the best tartar sauce I have ever had!

I am in Seattle for business for a couple of days and we found Sunfish using an app on a Blackberry. Pros: Great view, vibe, and prices. Cons: Limited menu, limited parking, and no beer. Cash only!! Location: Awesome. West side of city in an area called Alki. Small beachy community with a view of the city skyline across Elliot Bay. Parking is hard to find, but free on the streets. Restaurant vibe: We were kind of expecting a more sit-down type of place, but Sunfish is a take-out, pick up your food at the counter and find a table type of place. This is cool and beachy, but not fancy in the least bit. Plastic forks should sum it up for you. Menu and pricing: Fish and chips. They had cod, halibut, salmon, prawns, and oysters on the menu - all fried. The Sunfish special is a halibut-kabob with onions, peppers, and prawns that is grilled, not fried. Fries are standard side with entrees and you can order salad or coleslaw separate. Prices range from about $8-$13ish for a meal plus salads and drinks. Summary: One of my friends ordered the platter which had a couple of chunks of fried halibut, prawns, and oysters (oops no oysters, here more prawns, okay) on top of fries. He left hungry. I ordered the Sunfish special mentioned above. Great. Grilled halibut was generous in proportion, but a bit dry without using the tartar sauce, but good. It was $13.45 for that meal plus drink. I left full. If you're in the neighborhood, go there. Don't drive 30 minutes to get there like we did.

Great clam chowder! Halibut & chips were excellent not so much grease that it took away from acually enjoying the food. Prawns were fantastic. Owners very kind and personable. This makes a dining experience as important as the food. Take in some sun and eat outside. Enjoy the sidewalk noise that Alki has to offer.

This is, in my opinion, the best tasting fish and chips in Seattle, as well as the best clam chowder I have ever had. Only thing that is a little difficult is that it is cash only, and it is a bit pricey for Fish and Chips. However, no one really does it better. If I could, I would give it 4.5 stars. Lower the price by 5-10% and this review would be a 5 star!

When I am in West Seattle, I either go to Salty's or Sun Fish for some seafood. Sun Fish has great fish, clam chowder (I cannot share my bowl of chowder here) and oyster. However, there fried is not good at all. It is so soft and soggy. =( Service is always good

Sunfish: what will be remembered (by me) as the only "sub par" dining experience I've had w/ my favorite dinner company. Like Betsy and I have oddly amazing parking karma together, my dining companion and I have had oddly amazing eating karma. Almost never a plan, and always a good time. The wonderful evening at Alki notwithstanding, we did not "score" on our usual level with dinner here. Basic fried fish shack. There really was nothing special about the place. Spuds, Skipper's, Ivar's, Sunfish, the end. For the prices, they should do better. Being on Alki shouldn't give you a pass on that.

We came here on a Saturday morning with John's mom visiting from Oregon. John got the calamari and his mom and i got the combination with Halibut (that comes with two prawns, there oysters, one piece fish and fríes). Total was 42 dollars including three diets.

I've been reading the minority of negative reviews on Sunfish and while everyone has a right to their opinions, I have to tell the potential customers that rely on Yelp and other reviews to find new places to try, Sunfish is definitely worth trying. There is a reason this place gets a lot of business and like any other fast food place with quality food, you get what you pay for. Now, if you want a little Fish & Chips in your grease, you go to Spuds or elsewhere, but if you want fast, fresh, great seafood, you go to Sunfish and unless you are a smoker with numb taste buds, (like I was prior to 11 years ago on June 2nd) you'll absolutely love the food here.

  • Pam C.

My brother ordered the halibut and I ordered the cod, the cod was decent but I didn't think the halibut had any flavor. The fries we were served were slightly overcooked, too. I thought it to be overpriced for the quality. Also, this place takes cash only. :(

This is my favorite Fish&Chips place on Alki beach when it comes to flavor. The shop has the charming atmosphere of a family business and the owners are very friendly. My favorite dish there are the fried scallops, they are simply the best fried scallops I had so far. They do offer better quality in exchange for slightly higher prices. Why do I only give them four stars ? At least the times I have been there, they only accepted cash. I understand why businesses do this, but for me as a customer it is a major inconvenience.

I love sunfish! I'm a little bias because I used to work here as a kid but it's all true! The fish is VERY fresh. Filleted fresh every morning from whole fish And the fries and salad hand cut from whole potatoes and whole heads of lettuce. Nothing comes pre made here! Not even the amazing dill tarter sauce and most of the dressings. The kalamari is so tender it melts in your mouth, the prawns are so buttery and sweet you'll think you're eating lobster and the sunfish special is to die for! its a grilled kabob of 3 big chunks of halibut, 2 prawns, onions and bell peppers, grilled with awesome herbed olive oil served with fries and lemon. gawd and the chowder! starts with hand chopped onions and lots of butter! celery and potatoes. lots of clams and clam juice. no bacon to cover up the sweet clam nectar. and finished with heavy creamand seasoning. made almost daily.. I love love love everything! the owners 2 greek brothers from the old country, Mike and Peter are a little gruff and can be kinda scary sometimes to new people, think soup Nazi, only Fish Nazi, but once you become a regular they will take VERY good care of you. its all about quality here, you wont find frozen fries and crap. only the freshest, best quality, made with love and hard work. if you want fishy greasy, overly breaded fish go to spuds. and really people the prices aren't any different than what you would pay anywhere else. OH and BRING CASH! no credit cards..

  • Kelly M.

Pretty good fish and chips to be had here and nice seating outside. The fish seemed fresh, and certainly flavorful. They also have a pretty wide variety of items on the menu besides fish and chips which is nice. Prices seem fairly reasonable considering they give you pretty big portions. My only real gripe is that they don't take credit cards and I seldom carry cash.

pretty good - would give solid 3.5 stars; at least as good as Spuds (maybe better) and I think less expensive; good for kids; very good tartar sauce; like the shrimp as good size; good halibut too

I think there might have been a huge tornado that picked this place up from the middle of New York and dropped it smack dab in the middle of Alki. The guys who run this place have serious, urban attitude. Sort of a cross between the Soup Nazi and John Belushi's Greek Diner guy. You better know your order by the time you get to the counter or you're going to get a deep, soul penetrating glare of impatience from the cashier. That is, if he's not yelling at someone in the kitchen. And don't, whatever you do, for the love of God, pull out plastic. You will be quickly scolded with "No card. Cash only." I love the attitude, and I love the crispy fish, gbd fries and the plump fried oysters!

We love that they use a breadcrumb crust and not a greasy batter coating. The breadcrumb crust is light and tasty, the seafood fresh. It is worth the extra dollars and is so much better than the other place down the street. The chowder and coleslaw are good. Cash Only.

the halibut was out of this world! best fish ive ever tasted. it was fried in a breadcrumb batter. really delicious. the chips were soggy and gross.

This place isn't perfect, the guys can be kind of grumpy (once you get to know them they're actually very nice), and it's a bit expensive. But the food is great. I love the calamari and the oysters especially and my family loves the halibut. The seafood is fresh and has a nice, light batter. Wash it down with a cold lemonade. Spud seems to get by on its history and reputation - I thought it was terrible. Duke's is more upscale and you should be ready for a long wait. Sunfish has them both beat by a mile.

Very good fish. Great fried oysters and shrimp. Halibut and salmon were excellent. I like the attitude. No nonsense. Greek. (Whadda ya want? A Broadway musical?) Portions are not large, but this is fine because you ought to take your time and enjoy the fish. Chips were soggy. No. Wait! That was the West Seattle Junction Street Festival. Chips were a little greasy and undercooked. As you might expect, the Greek salad was great. Caveats: I did not try the chowder and I am not from Boston. For a Greek-diner-with-great-food-hole-in-the-wall style setting, the place did not seem unusually dirty. It's well lighted, so you can take a look inside and judge for yourself. On the downside, prices seemed a bit high. If I go again, I will get take-out and bring my own drinks. We just moved from Pittsburgh, though so we are used to lower prices on just about everything. There is no fish 'n' chips place that can touch Sunfish in Pittsburgh to my knowledge. I would suggest taking your kids somewhere other than Sunfish because they will probably not care all that much about the quality of the seafood and you will pay around $8 for a fish 'n' chips and lemonade or soft drink meal here.

The only place that can beat this place out is the Owl N Thistle - and that's just barely. Skip Spud's - I used to work there - you don't wanna know. The fish is great - lightly battered, flakey, homemade tartar sauce. I've been going to these guys ever since they were off of 37th and Fauntleroy!

The BEST fish & chips (Halibut) in Seattle. When you go there, bug them to get a WEBSITE so they can post their current MENU and PRICES online for those of us that want to phone in orders for pickup!

Work on Alki and have eaten at both Spuds and Sunfish. Sunfish is far superior in flavor and freshness. Folks are missing out if the only eat at Spuds just because it's there.

one filet of fried halibut (two if you go with s. bey- ha!), three fried oysters, two prawns, and fries for less than $11. the two brothers running this place have been in business for over 20 years, and with food like this, i've got no reservations that they'll be around for 20 more. although fish and chips probaaaably isn't the most health conscious meal you can have, sunfish breads and fries their seafood in a way where you don't have the usual oil in your face drippings, which can be pretty pesky for pescatarians such as moi. everything in the combo meal (w/halibut) i ordered was pretty damn fresh. if i could, i'd move out to west seattle despite the fact that were zero poc's in sight. where else could you hop across the street and eat in front of the crashing waves with a distant view of downtown and the sound?

  • Ann C.

After reading the reviews, I decided to try this place instead of Spud's. Sunfish is just ok. I am sorry to say this, but the clam chowder was disappointing. I am from Boston and the Boston Chowda was much better. My mom didn't like the chowder either. The halibut was good, but the fried oyster wasn't. The tarter sauce was the highlight of this place. Like another reviewer said, we didn't leave with a greasy feeling. Edit: My brother says the chowder at Duke's is better and he prefer Spud's. Well, it would have been nice if he offered me this tip when I asked him earlier. Brothers... useless:p

this place is so gross i went there and saw one of the chefs pick a booger and continue to prepare the food with out washing his hands needless to say i have not eaten there sense i did eat there before but i was never really a fan expensive for the small pieces of fish you get and well in my opinion not as good as spuds but that's just my opinion but the booger really just grossed me out for good

I wanted to like Sunfish so much because I swear I liked them in the past...but I just wasn't happy with my meal. I thought the prices were overpriced and the food just okay. :(

  • Charles C.

As far as fast-fresh-seafood goes, this place is the best! Spud who? Ivar what? In fact the grilled skewers put most of your over-priced seafood restaurants to shame! I like to avoid the Spring and Summer crowds, but even if Alki Beach is crowded and you have to hunt for a parking spot you will not be disappointed with this West Seattle establishment! My only complaint is they close down for month long durations, so call ahead to make sure they're open.

    (4)
  • Danika M.

WAY BETTER THAN SPUDS! The fish here is cut thicker, so it's not as dry or thoroughly soaked with grease. I've never tried anything else here, I just stop in sometimes when I'm on Alki.

  • Tim R.

Michael and Peter have made me an incredible lunch for 27 years. Halibut: Exceptional flavor, light breading. Kabob: Exceptional flavor. Slaw: Exceptional. Garlic vinegar: get the white / clear bottles. Ask them about Greece / Crete where they are from. You might get an extra piece of fish.

    (5)
  • Jasmine M.

Gross: the food and the staff. No eye contact, no please, no thank you, under cooked fish, and dirty tables and floor.

    (2)
  • Sara W.

I think the grumpy Greek guy behind the counter is Peter. He didn't used to be so grumpy 25 years ago. That's about how long my husband and I have been going to Sunfish, back when it really was a little hole in the wall place on Fauntleroy. Best fish and chips I've ever had, still. I usually get the prawns though, which are superb and you get about 7 or 8 large ones. The tartar sauce is as good as my homemade and make the fries delicious. It's great to eat outside when the weather's nice too.

    (5)
  • Rachel B.

What rocks about Sunfish is the tartar sauce. I don't like tartar sauce and I like their tartar sauce. The fish is good. I also like to get the scallops. I am picky about scallops and this is one of the only places I've found that I like them. Plus, it is just fun to take the food down to the water and eat there. Oh yeah, they have a kebab as well which is pretty good and if you don't want something deep fried is a good choice.

    (4)
  • Zim B.

As others have said, no eye contact from staff is an immediate turn-off. Maybe a cultural thing, who knows, but they gotta change that. Then there's the cash or check only policy. This is the 21st century. The only people who do not take credit cards are people cheating on their taxes.

    (1)
  • L J.

Their Halibut fish and chips is always a good choice. I like their clam chowder also. When we are in Seattle we have to eat here each time and will come back for sure.

  • erik h.

This place has the best fish and chips I've had in a LONG time. The crisp full of flavor halibut was fried to perfection with not a bit of greasy feeliing. The homemad tarter sauce and garlic vinegar make this place another notch above everyone else. And the basic "old school" fast food feel really is refreshing in this land of cookie cutter pre-packaged BORING restaurant. Will be back here again and again....

  • Cynthia M.

I tried this place for the first time tonight - and was very impressed. Not busy at all - two other people were there. I had halibut and chips, calimari appetizer and one other person in the party had the fish kabob with fresh halibut, prawns and veggies. Everything was prepared fresh right then and there. There is no table service and no beer/wine....but it was some of the best fish I've had in Seattle. Next time I would get the kabob because I sampled it and the fish was lusty, fresh, flavorful. French fries were great - and there were several types of vinegar, a lot with fresh garlic cloves in the bottle, some with chiles, very pungent and good. I grew up in Canada and every Friday we got fish and chips cooked British style, waited in a long line and took it home wrapped in a newspaper. Then the pungent feast of the most tender halibut and chips doused with vinegar, lemon and tabasco or ketchup/salt....I haven't had anything quite as good since, but I loved this place. A bit pricey but worth it.

I stopped here the other day after a long and exhausting bike ride from belltown to alki, in need of some tasty refreshment. The kalamari was amazing and went really well with their delicious fresh tarter sauce. I really like the breading and it wasnt greasy at all. Plus, anywhere that I can sit outside and enjoy the sun gets points by me. The service and staff definitely disappointed though. Didnt make eye contact, mumbled under their breath, and pretty lousy at communicating. Minus one star for you, grumpy greek guy at the register.

    (4)
  • Cassie K.

Simply amazing I am a west Seattlelight and have tried many fish and chip but these guys are the best. Try the halibut Co bob or the cod and chip combo.

    (5)
  • Jeff R.

Good fried seafood. Their menu is a bit strange though. You can order combo platters (fries and 1 or 2 pieces of fish), but not all fish was sold separately. For example you could buy a piece of salmon or cod, but not halibut. This makes it harder to sample a variety of fish. They also don't take credit cards, which in this day and age can be a real problem. Ok, what do I like? I really enjoyed their fried fish! I'm getting to a point in my life where fried anything just doesn't appeal to me. This place, however, does a really good job of frying their fish and not over doing it. Also, it didn't taste greasy at all. The batter was crunchy and flavorful. Among our group, we had fried salmon, cod, halibut, oysters and shrimp. Fried salmon wouldn't normally appeal to me, but we were accidentally given a piece and boy that was good-- perhaps my favorite! Parking was a pain on a slow Thursday afternoon. We ended up getting a $47 parking ticket in a poorly marked no-parking spot. No signs, just some color coding system that conveniently gets the out-of-towners. Shame on you West Seattle!

This was great! Was visiting Seattle for the first time and just walking alongside Alki Beach. Sunfish caught my eye with their banner outside with their fishes, calamari, clam chowder. We had just eaten lunch and I was so full, but I always have room for clam chowder. We got the clam chowder and cod fish and chips. IT WAS DELICIOUS. The clam chowder was a little small and lacking in seafood, but it was still great. They fried the fish fresh after we ordered it. It was amazing. Usually I feel gross and oily after eating fried food, but this wasn't the case. The breading was light and crispy. Would definitely hit up this spot when I visit again. Can't wait to try the calamari next time.

Good fish and chips. Very lightly breaded fish versus the normal heavy batter allows the taste of the fish to still be present. Modest decore, affordable, beach front, great views.

  • Jim P.

I have been a big fan of Spuds for most of my life, I have put up with their unsanitary conditions, charging for tarter and ketchup, sky high prices, lack of seating....you name it. The only reason I ever came back was because I loved their fish! But I actually swore I was done with them last year...and now I have a better fish place to go to. SUNFISH! The place is clean, well lit, and most importantly.... good fish and chips. I hear the calamari is great also. Spuds... see you never. There's a new sheriff in town.

Pretty clean. Decent service. Delicious food. Wish they took cards, and offered some steamed options instead of all fried, but it is what it is, and fish and chips shack on the beach.

Fantastic place that met all expectations. We were greeted by a friendly Greek couple who had many helpful suggestions. The place was clean, and the service was quick. We received our Chowder, and fish which smelt fantastic, and tasted even better. No frills just great food, and awesome service. Cash only I believe.

I have always been a Spuds guy as far as fish and chips go near downtown Seattle. I have been told a few times about sunfish and that I should give it a go. Went there two days ago and thought the fish and chips AND tartar was great. The clam chowder was very good too, not the best I have had but very good. Best clam chowder IMO is at Wally's in Desmoines WA. They have great fish too. Anyhow, back to sunfish. No frills but food was good, the place was clean and location is fun. Now I have tough choices to make when heading toward Alki and im feeling like fish and chips.

  • Frank B.

These Greeks may be grumpy on the outside by they fill people tummy's with LOVE! Having grown up with Spuds I normally go there, however when I want a change THE SUN FISH is the only alternative. First off the clam chowder is rich and creamy and fill with goodies just the way you want it. I mean forget Boston, they can't make chowda this good. Now moving up the menu the fish is very fresh, clean and you have fish choices of cod, halibut, & salmon. Even a halibut kabob for those who enjoy non-fried fish. Plus fresh calamari for the squid eaters. You'll find this a wonderful place on a nice sunny day in the summer months to enhance your meal. You may eat inside or take it outside so you can suck up the sea air of Puget Sound while you eat. Outside of this review if you don't like what FRANK has to say well you'll miss out on the goods!

This experience comes with a story. I put together two weeks' worth of directions for my trip, leaving myself plenty of surprises along the way. Down from Seattle to San Diego and back, and I find myself on Friday afternoon with a spare hour. Decided to knock an item off my Saturday list and check out the sunfish statue in West Seattle. Except when I get all the way there, I find out that I was headed to this restaurant, not a statue at all. Good thing I didn't come here Saturday morning, or it would have been closed. Since I'd come all this way for otherwise nothing, I made a dinner out of it. The guy behind the counter is unintentionally hilarious. Anything I ordered or asked about, he just smiled and said "Sure." I said "I wish I could try a little of everything." "Sure." "There's an item for that?" "Sure." (gestures at board) So I had two cod, two oysters, two prawns, all relatively lightly fried compared to what "fried" means back east. I get the impression Northwest fried is a lot lighter in general. The breading has a nice flavor but it really lets the seafood shine through. Of course, it's all as fresh as can be. The prices aren't outstanding, but they're reasonable enough. Wish I could also try the kalamari (need to spell it their way, they're Greek, after all!) and scallops. Funnily enough, the guy behind the counter instantly pegged me as NY area by the questions I asked, maybe my accent. He must not get many tourists in general in this area. Too bad this place is miles away from any normal tourist location. It would do even better business that way! P.S. Yes, the garlic vinegar is awesome. Comes in regular and spicy. And the tartar sauce is freshly made. Eat everything here. Everything.

Amazing seafood, probably the best in my life. Which considering how this place looked on the outside... man I'm glad I went in anyways! Talk about a dive, totally worth going to, highly recommend if you need a seafood fix.

  • Patrick L.

We asked for some Halibut, it was on the menu, they said we don't have any......so we ordered something else. The guy next in line right behind us ordered halibut.....they somehow found some. Super cheap and by no means "friendly" environment. I'd go down the street to Fish n Chips.

Run by a Russian family, it's definitely an Alki locals joint, with a lot of older neighborhood regulars who have great rapport with the owner. It's cash only. I decided on the small 1 piece cod and chips as everything else was $10+ and I didn't have a ton of cash on me. I kindly placed my order and for some still unclear reason the man looked at me like I had shat on his floor. Nonetheless, the transaction was otherwise amicable, and after a somewhat lengthy wait I got a healthy serving of fried cod and a good quantity of thick crisp fries. The cod was not too terribly greasy or breaded and was actually one of the better pieces of fried cod I've had. The small cod and chips meal was around $7, and had I ordered any of the more interesting plates I would have been out $10-15 + tax + tip. It seems rather pricey for just fish and chips, even given it's pretty good fish and chips. It's not a place I'd go too far out of my way to visit... if in the area and in the mood for fish and chips, and I had a good quantity of cash, I'd do it again. And to be fair, the owner and family were overall friendly, but it was clear the good vibes are slanted towards the older locals. And finally, it does have a nice view of Alki Beach. But so do several other Alki joints, and IMO the view from the street is probably as good or better.

Hands down the best fish & chips in Seattle. The salmon and chips is always moist and the portion is more than acceptable. I also love the halibut and chips like I love my own son. Their chowder is crazy delicious and they have a rather large Greek salad if that's what you want??? Don't miss the garlic and pepper packed vinegar bottles throughout the restaurant, it compliments the fish perfectly. Yes, it's expensive, but most good things are. Treat your tastebuds to something lovely once in a while. The grouchy brothers (owners) make it all the more fun to visit. How can they be so cross!? Haha... This is the Mercedes Benz of fish and chips...the best or nothing.

  • Mike D.

My new favorite fish & chips joint. They have great fish & chips and great malt vinegar with garlic cloves in it. I was told that the two brothers behind the counter are the owners and they close shop two weeks once a year to visit their mother in England. I used to love Ivar's and Spud's to get fish & chips when traveling to Seattle, but now I will make it a point to go to Sunfish on Alki Beach.

The fried prawns and oysters were great, the place was clean, the patio was clean, & the restroom was clean. The owner accommodated our request for a paper chowder bowl full of water for our dog. Pleasant staff and great location by the beach.

Great place to grab a quick bite to eat. I've always gone to Spuds for my fish and chips fix when I'm at the beach at Alki, but the Sunfish has won me over. I wish I started eating at this place earlier! Their fish and chips are fresh and very filling. I highly recommend getting the cod and some clam chowder. Friendly service also!

I love this place! Everyone I have brought here love it as well. The two Greek brothers that run this restaurant keep the place very clean and cook everything fresh. Remember cash only and they are closed on Mondays. The location and views of the Olympics, Puget Sound and Seattle can not be beat. Nothing fancy, just good fish and chips, chowder and views. Save your appetite for the fish kabob, you'll love it.

I love this place. Fried fish is great not so greasy. Love the fries, clam chowder is very good. I like how they use the corn meal on the fried fish. I love the vinegar bottles with fresh garlic whole black peppercorns. Also the dark vinegar with chili in it. Goes great with fried food. I'm definitely a fan and coming back when visiting Seattle. My hangout place for fish and chips. 5 stars all the way.

Yes I am a Fan of this place. I must have driven by it a hundred times and never walked in til yesterday. It was extremely windy and cold at Alki this particular time and I just wanted to get out of the cold. As I stepped inside, I already liked the place since the heater was turned up to extra comfort zone. I figured might as well order some grub to justify my entrance into their establishment. " Ok give me a 3 piece Cod, A 2 piece Halibut, a large Clam Chowder and a regular coke. " Total damage $30 I grabbed one of those bottles of vinegar that contained some spicy peppers and doused my fishes with it. Fresh Fresh and very tasty. Window seating was available and I had a nice view of the water. I prefer the view of Seattle Space Needle and the other buildings, but this location is located further south. As I looked around, I noticed a lot of senior citizens in the establishment; rich old retirees that have deep pockets and lots of time on their hands. The place was filled with them. Ofcourse I am a tad bit exaggerating, but in my head I said to myself, " This would be a nice hangout when i get to their ages. Eat something somewhat healthy, sit around with other seniors for lunch and b.s. about everyday affairs, enjoying the scenery while drinking a cup of tea." I shook my head, who am I kidding.....By the time i get to their ages, the owners would have keeled over, this establishment would be bulldozed down to make room for one of those fancy condos, and I would be in some tropical island hanging with girls that are wearing minimal clothing, with a beer in my hand and saying, " Hey Mate give me an order of those fish and chips so that i can remember some of my youth when living in Seattle. Great! you got one of those peppered vinegar bottles as well." Now I am reminiscing, smiling, and continue living a youthful life.....

Cash only. Decent fried food, and a table to relax and feast. The space is kind of like a cafeteria- functional, and not a lot of decoration. I tend to like my fried foods crispy, and they don't quite get it as crispy as I'd like. Large portions. Great location, on Alki.

A nice mom and pop place. While dining, I've seen multiple people coming in waving to the owners. Definitely a place with loyal following. The place is simple, and good food. Make sure you check your order. They've missed my clam chowder, and couple other things. ***Cash Only.***

One of the best fish & chips in Seattle; easy top 5. I especially like the halibut kabobs which are cooked on the grill with veggies and really good and a great alternative to the fried fish. Very good clam "chowda" as we say back east. The 2 Greek brothers, the owners with the pix on the wall, are nice guys. We go here often and try different menu items each time. Portions are just right; it's all good. Make sure you have cash when you walk in there.

A very nice mom & pop place! Beware they only take cash but it definitely worth the trip to the ATM! Get at least 20 bucks so u can get medium cod (2 piece with fries = 10.00). They have this oil infused with garlic on the table that you want to drown on everything. I have been here twice and it's now a bookmarked! Love it!

Pretty solid fish and chips place that looks like it has been a pretty permanent marker in this neighborhood. You order at the counter and service is surprisingly quick. On nice days, you can find outdoor seating to take in the full ambience of beach bumming. We had a light meal, ordering cod and chips with a cup o' chowder. The chowder was solid, with generous bits of clams throughout. My only complaints are that the chowder seemed to have too much flour to create the creaminess, rather than cream itself, and the saltines were stale. The fish and chips was fine. A good portion for the price. But, the fries were just meh. Great authentic old-school chowder house ambience. Go here instead of Duke's to save some money and eat food that's of equivalent quality.

Cod Combo - 4/5. For just over $13, 3 deep-fried oysters, 2 deep-fried prawns, 1 LARGE piece of cod and a small basket of fries. The seafood was great and came out piping hot! Don't expect too much from the fries, but the view is lovely.

Oysters and fish w/ chowder. The service is awesome a Greek man ( I think) with such charm and the cook woman. ( perhaps Latino ) were fabulous. Clean clean clean everywhere and fish fries and all filled me up all day ! I will be back... No more Spuds give me SunFish at Alki Beach

We were out on Alki drive and noticed this restaurant along the way, so we decided to try it out. Don't expect to have anything other than just pretty much fried food, although the fried clams, fish and oysters and fries were delicious. The clam chowder was superb! My girlfriend ordered one of the salads, which was already pre-made and just in the fridge, which wasn't that good. If you're looking for some chowder or fried food, this is a good place to come and eat.

I haven't been to Sunfish in a few years. I have moved up north and rarely get out to West Seattle but I had a craving for it so made the long drive this afternoon. I used to visit Sunfish when they were at the bottom of 35th - I am a very long time customer and cannot remember ever having a bad meal there. Today was no exception. The chowder is the perfect blend of ingredients. It was served HOT which I appreciate. They have the best coleslaw - too full to eat it there but brought it home so I could savor it later. And the fish kabob, so good! Halibut, shrimp, onion and red pepper all grilled up on a stick!! The meal totally hit the spot. The experience completely matched up to my high expectations. Love this place! Bring cash (they don't take plastic), it is spendy and totally worth it.

Simple and honest food in alki. We ordered up some cod and halibut with chips, both were good and price was pretty fair. Interior lacks character but on a day like today, sit outside. Cash only is the only downfall.

Just simply excellent all around. Lose a star for cash only. I do not know if I have ever seen a restaurant, which specializes in fried foods, so clean! Heads and shoulders superior to 'Spuds' down the street. I dream of the prawns. If they did onion rings I would think I was back in New England!

Nice place for some fish n chips where you can have a good view across Puget Sound of the city while enjoying your meal. The fish was pretty good and fresh here with a good consistency of flakiness in the fish. It was advertised on their menu board that they serve True Cod as their fish. The serving size is decent for a meal. They also have a variety of other items like oysters, halibut and clam chowder. The restaurant itself is more like a fast food joint where you place your order and pick up your food at the counter. The food is kind of pricey where my two pieces of fish and some fries came to over $9. Not sure if it is worth it to me, but good to try it out at least once. For that price I would have expected it to be at a standard service restaurant and not at a fast food fish joint. The place was also not kept clean very well as the table tops were very greasy and with crumbs of food on there as well. The place can get packed easily as it is not very large and during the time we were there, it was busy the entire time. They also have outdoor seating which can be a great option in the summer on a nice sunny day.

Sunfish should change their name to SUPERFISH! What a nice surprise. Tasty fish, not greasy, and malt vinegar laced with cloves of garlic. You must eat here.

Whenever the sun comes out in Seattle, I am craving for fish n chips and yesterday wasn't an exception (: I like the consistency of their food here; is always very fresh and they gave you a decent size portion. I have tried their clam chowder, cod, halibut, and oysters n fries and they are all phenomenal! They have both indoor and outdoor seatings so will sure appeal both your senses and experience in the Summer! Be prepare to be showered with the ocean breeze & freshness while you are savoring the "golden" fish n chips eating outdoor at Sunfish while in Alki! On the other hand, clam chowder is the hearty option in the rainy season (: The only comment that I would put will be the ca$h only policy (deduct one star). So go to the ATM first before you hit up this place guys (:

This place is great.. way better than spuds. Oh and the family that owns it are GREEK! Not Russian. ..

Their fish and chips are alright and they are sometimes a little less busy than other fish and chip places in the area. I'd like to support them but I can't get on board with the cash only thing. Was saving that $0.30 card processing fee worth losing a $25+ sale? Really? That's a shame. More and more people these days are carrying plastic instead of cash, so why lose a significant sale for such an insignificant cost of doing business? I have a hard time supporting businesses that make it difficult for me to spend my money with them. Spuds takes cards, btw, so I'll just keep walking.

Going to the beach on Alki and Fish-n-Chips have been a tradition since I was a youngster many years ago. When we discovered the Sunfish, our traditional trip to the beach became secondary to eating Fish-n-Chips. We now go throughout the winter until the owners who happen to be Greek spend a few weeks with their relatives back in their homeland. This family is one of the nicest and they serve a great Fish-n-Chips! My wife enjoys their Combo Special with Salmon. Their food has always been top-notch. We miss them when they are away over Christmas time, but we know they'll soon be back to satisfy our Fish-n-Chip craving. The beach is fun too, in the summertime...

I thought the food was very good - especially the calamari. The fries left us a bit wanting, but the fish was yummy. We had Cod and Halibut which were generous sizes and very "meaty." It is sorta pricey though, but I guess you're paying for the beautiful view and not just the food. The place is clean and looks like a take-out place with a few tables - really, nothing special. Our total cost for a family of 6 was nearly $70. Five of us purchased a 1 or 2 piece meal with a small and/or medium drink and my son got the calamari entree. None of us got a side or salad. It was a really nice treat to eat there, but I'm pretty sure unless I have a good reason we won't be going back for a long while - just too expensive. If you go, remember - this restaurant is CASH only.

Chose to eat here instead of the Seattle Fish Mkt on California because it had a better vibe to me inside & also has an unobstructed view of Alki Beach. It is also family owned & operated business wc I prefer to support. Had a small bowl of clam chowder and their small fish (cod) & chips basket. The chowder was the way I like it; thick & creamy. This is the 3rd cup of chowder I've had on my trip to Seattle & I liked this one best. That's not to say that the other chowder I had at Pike Place Chowder & the Lockspot Cafe were worse; just different. Of the 3, Sunfish's was the cheapest & Pike Place the most expensive. So, Sunfish's chowder has that going for it too. The cod in the fish & chips was also very good. There was a nice battered crust covering the cod, which was nice & flaky. The small order supposedly only has 1pc of cod in it, but I got 2; guess it depends on the size or weight. They also offer 3 different types of malt vinegar: the standard type & 2 infused versions -- garlic only & garlic & peppers. I preferred the garlic & pepper version. The only low point were the fries wc were slightly burnt. The Lockspot still has the BEST fries based on my limited sampling of restaurants in the area so far. If I were in the area longer, I'd probably become a fan but for now I can say it's an ok place to go for chowder & some fish & chips.

If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would, in my opinion Sunfish has is under rated and is a hidden gem on Alki. The owner is awesome, friendly and polite. My gf and I always order the fried oysters and calamari and it never fails to hit the spot! For how much you're paying you're definitely getting your moneys worth in quality and quantity! If you're in Alki don't be afraid to give this place a shot you won't regret it! Also, just as a friendly tip this place is cash only.

We wanted to explore the beach area today but it was so windy and cold. So we decided to have lunch at the nearest restaurant, Sunfish. We ordered fried calamari, fried oysters with chips, and a garden salad. The calamari was okay. We did not like the oysters. It was definitely a mistake ordering the oysters since we only like to eat them fresh. The salad was good.

Wow, sooooo good! Best fish and chips I've ever had. Clam chowder is awesome. Way better than in Pike's Market. The fish is sooo fresh. We've been there twice already in three days! The owner is awesome and it's all safe for my nut allergic son. You must eat here!!

Great fish and chips. Fantastic chowder. I ordered one piece of fish and got two; I thought that was a nice thing to do. Prices no more outrageous than any other Seattle waterfront eatery, and here you can actually see the Sound out the windows. Highly recommended.

'Twas a sunny, brisk afternoon at Alki. What better way to complement the day than with some fish and chips before enjoying the weather and view? That was my mindset as we rolled to Sunfish, right off the main drag. We were originally worried about finding a place to park. After all it was a summer Saturday and virtually everyone in Seattle had decided to soak up some rays along what precious little beach areas we have. After driving up and down a couple streets, we discovered that Sunfish offers customer parking behind the building and there were a couple spots available. (But SHHHHHH don't tell anyone okay?) The restaurant offers awesome views of the action outside from almost every table inside the building. You can opt to sit on the patio as well, but this time it was a bit too chilly to do so. The guy taking our order was friendly enough, and asked us if we wanted to eat at the place or take the order to go. (We were eating there.) The reason why I even remember this is because after we sat down, I noticed no less than four signs asking customers to please state if they wanted their orders to go. Makes me wonder what happened previously here to necessitate something drilled into our heads like that, but maybe it's just a quirk! But I digress. I'd heard this was the legit, "superior" place for fish and chips to a chain like Ivar's (which apparently is for tourists), so we put in an order for a 2-piece cod with fries, and a small chowder. Price was comparable to said chain, and it didn't take long for our food to come out, steaming hot and smelling lovely. We dug in. I expect some greasiness to battered and fried fish, and Sunfish's offering was no exception. However the cod was well-prepared and not heavy, tender and flavorful. It tasted pretty good without the assistance of tartar sauce and vinegar so that's a big big plus. With that said, two pieces were plenty. The portion size was just right and I didn't feel like I overate. The chowder was tasty and of a good consistency. Fries were okay. Overall, a good spot for seafood in West Seattle! I'll come back to sample the calamari and some other items on the menu next time I'm in the area. Thumbs up.

Cash only. Great fish & chips (scallops, halibut, cod, prawns, you name it)! Cute little place with indoor and outdoor seating, and great people-watching along Alki.

The owner is the nicest guy ever. Honestly, I have never received such good service from a single other eatery before.

Spectacular, consistent, fresh, clean and memorable! These two Greek brothers do it the old fashioned way and every time I go myself or send someone there the fish is fresh, the chowder smooth and tasty and more than enough fries to feed the Seagulls across the street on the bulkhead on Alki beach. The Greek salad is always crisp and cold and the tarter sauce perfect for generous dipping. Support these hard working people they deserve our loyalty!

This is my Quintessential fish and chips joint. Its made fresh for you each time, ALWAYS perfect, never greasy and the breading is just so. If you're looking for something lighter, try the Halibut shish kebab! But you should really just let go and partake in the amazing fried journey. The portion of the single fish n chips is pretty generous, the double isn't all that much bigger considering its $5 more. I pretty much HAVE to get the chowder cause its just delicious...simple and clean flavors yet creamy and heart warming. Tried the fried prawns recently, they were quite yummy too. But again, its about Fish and Chips! Its Cash Only and while I don't love that, I just want them to keep making my favorite food. So come prepared for a local gem. And forget the rest on Alki or anywhere else in the Greater Seattle Area! I noticed a lot of comments about "surly" staff. There's sometimes a feel of that, but its two brothers that have been there running the joint since I was a kid and they've always been pleasant and moreover, they make AWESOME fish and chips. So chill. Oh, and please don't go to Spuds.

i was given a recommendation to come here. i must preface this by saying that i almost never eat fish and chips and try and stay away from fried foods. i have had them of course before and the are delicious. so it was recommended for me to come here. the place was very clean and the two gentlemen were very nice that served me. the food also came up very fast and fresh. the only problem i had was with the food. it was just "ok" in my opinion. both the fish and the chips were very greasy. yes, i know this is fried food and my order was fresh and hot so of course it will have a bit more grease on it since it did not have a chance to really "drain". however, you could taste the cooking oil more than you could taste the potatoes or the fish. the breading was also not to my liking. it just seemed very mass produced and greasy. i had the cod so maybe if i had the shrimp or something different it would have tasted different. sorry, it just wasn't that great to me. but it has a beautiful view and a very clean establishment so that is great.

been going to the sunfish for years, when we first started going the halibut was outstanding!! The last couple of years, the "freshness" has been lacking. My wife and I went there last week and ordered the halibut and chips, then I went back to the counter to order two ice teas. The owner of the place took my $5, stuck it in the till, and glared "I'll have to make some". He brought the dry and chewy fish out and then later brought out two very warm and expensive ice teas. We are soooo done with these rude dudes...

Such a great spot!! *Fresh fish fried to perfection. *Yummy fries!! *Big and yummy fried prawns! *Crisp and yummy salad. *Ummm..let's talk about that view of the Sound right outside. GORG!!! *Such friendly service, and apparently he always gives you more. So if you order a 2 piece, he'll give you 3. Being friendly to the staff gets you a LONG way!!!! Kind of pricey for fish and chips, but you can't compromise for quality!! Will definitely make this spot a family tradition. The inlaws have been coming here for years!!!
