I went to Serendipity for take-out today and I thought it was fantastic. I had the BLT with Avocado and it's the best sandwich I've had since moving to Seattle. I thought the take-out service was great. My order was taken promptly and the food came out 5 minutes later. I will definitely be going again.

My fiance and I have given Serendipity four tries, and after our last experience, we decided we won't be going back. The food is actually pretty good, but the service is just terrible. They are always understaffed and the employees they do have are unfriendly. When we asked for a substitution yesterday the waitress actually rolled her eyes at us. It was just a really unpleasant experence.

I might be too optimistic reviewing after only a few visits, but I have only had good experiences here. Let me clarify. I have an almost 2 year old. It's hard to get him to sit through meals. Although we go out to eat often to get him used to the drill of sitting, eating and waiting, it's nice sometimes to have a place I can finish my meal and drinks in relative peace a quite while he plays. The atmosphere is casual and lovely. I've been here with a groups of 6 and two (and a variety in between) and the service has been attentive, if not a bit slow. I think because they have only one or two people working the place--including getting ice cream or coffee drinks and serving tables the service runs on the slower side. The food has been great. The serendipity salad with grilled steak is wonderful-- I love their vinaigrette and the tomato soup is silky smooth. I guess I would give anyplace that served a good meal that lets my child play in a contained area while I drank a glass of wine with my friend 4 stars. Sorry to be optimistic.

Comfy and well lit cafe; I love how the large windows let in a lot of natural light. Good coffee, comfy booths. The blonde lady who was working was super nice.

The free wi-fi is what kept me interested, but now that it's password protected I will not be going back. The food is bland and usually cold when served. Service is slow and unfriendly and more than likely you will not end up with a refill on any drink you order. It takes forever to get your food, even when it's not busy and although there is a kids area, children are running around all over and are very loud. This was tolerable because I liked to use the wi-fi but will no longer dine there now that it's password protected

Do not go here. It is a coffee shop that thinks it is a restaurant. The menu is tiny and overpriced. My grandfather was being very nice and took us all out for a family dinner. While I loved the family time, I was amazed this place was even in business. The only good thing they had going for it was that they had a good area for young kids to play.

I go to Serendipity often on my way to work. The owners are parents of students at the school I teach at. They send their kids to public school, I buy coffee at their shop. It is a sort of reciprocal relationship. They serve Thomas Hammer coffee which I have never heard of but it is scrumptious. Way better than any other coffee choices in Magnolia Village. Nowadays they also sell Macrina Bakery baked goods and they make a mean breakfast sandwich. It is a bit pricey for lunch, I went with a friend, but it seems perfect for Magnolia. There is a kid play area so moms and dads can relax a bit while their kids write on the chalkboard wall or play with the gigantic dollhouse. They also give teachers a discount. How cool is that? Please support this awesome local business.

I've given this place way too many chances. I've gone back a few times, hoping for improved service and food but today I hit my breaking point. First of all, there were only two people eating in the cafe when we went in. You would think this would indicate speedy service in getting your food. No!! Time and time again, Serendipity has disappointed on the speed of their lousy service. We waited at least 25-30 minutes for two sandwiches. And this leads me to my next disappointment. I ordered the veggie panini for the first time. Not only did it come out luke warm and the cheese wasn't melted, it only had TWO items on it. Who puts olives and artichoke hearts on a panini with cheese and calls it a veggie panini? Totally unappealing to look at and the combination was terrible. What ever happened to peppers, zucchini, mushrooms, artichoke, etc on a veggie sandwich? My husband ordered the black bean burger and said it was very average as well. They advertise a side salad with both sandwiches but what you get is a pile of lettuce thrown onto the plate with a side of dressing. Not only is the food quality and service disappointing but the prices they charge for this are unreal. We both decided Subway would have been a better choice and will not EVER waste our time at this place again. I'm sorry, Serendipity, but you need to do a complete overhaul on your business model if you want to be successful. What you've got going is definitely not working for such a great location in the Magnolia village!

We live in the neighborhood and go to Serendipity a lot. I agree that the service can be really slow, but the food has always been good. I love the shoestring fries and the mixed green salad, and I usually get the Garden Burger, turkey sandwich, veggie eggs "benedict", huevos rancheros, and have gotten some other things, too. I have never been disappointed with the food, and the local bread is fantastic! Their pastries are really good, too. I am surprised also by the "so expensive!" comments, since it's really equivalent to a nice sandwich-and-salad type place in most places in Seattle, and still more affordable than most of the neighborhood. Advice: grab your menu from the barista counter on the way through, and make eye contact with a waitress after you sit down, and enjoy the food!

Pros: Love the ambience Excellent, refreshing Caesar salad Mac n cheese to die for Cons: Mac n cheese not part of the lunch menu (after a bit of begging, we got them to make it for us) Hurried and not so attentive staff (to their credit, the store recently opened and I think they were still working out the kinks) All in all, great dining experience and a welcomed addition to the Magnolia 'hood.

Food was surprisingly good. Service was friendly - plus they have a play area for the kids. I just wish it weren't so out of the way for those of us who do not live in Magnolia.

I really wanted to like this place because I'm from the neighborhood but the food is bland, sloppy and unconsidered. The service is appalling: I wasn't given silverware and, when I asked for some, was told to get it myself.

This is my second favorite local coffee place. A bit more of a drive than Brewhaha, but worth it on that odd afternoon that they are closed, or I find myself in the village itself. I love that this place is local... that makes a lot of difference for me. I've never eaten here, but I might. I like that they have the gelato counter, not that I've had any. I just really like the coffee they serve, and they've always had very nice counter staff. Best coffee in the Village. Maybe once I experience all the other things that they have to offer, I might give them that other star.

i am not impressed at all. i've been here a few times, twice just to buy a pastry and again to pickup a grilled cheese sandwich to go. my sandwich had almost no cheese - it was more like a grilled sourdough bread sandwich with a slice of tomato. the asian slaw is very good and they recently switched bakeries and the cherry scone is delicious. but the service is lacking, as others have noted. when i came in to pick up my sandwich there was no one in the front at all. i waited a few minutes and then walked to the back to get someone's attention. one staff member came out of the restroom in the back and looked at me and kept walking into the kitchen. i called out "excuse me" and that got her attention and she sent someone to the front. no apology. nothing. that's not good service.

This is the first time I've gone to Serendipity but it won't be the last! I just had the best bowl of Cioppino I've ever had!! It was rich, nice chunks of seafood and just the right spiciness! Perfect! I took this to go so I don't know about service - although they were very friendly when I picked it up with quick service for my order. I'll definitely go back and try their other food!

i read about serendipity cafe on red tricycle, and immediately made weekend plans to go with my 2 year old daughter. red tricycle is usually spot-on with their recommendations. not this time. the place was dirty, broken cooler with collapsed shelving was the first thing i saw. service was tied, and seemed annoyed when people walked in. the food took forever and people who arrived after me got their food well before me. i was offered a drive-by shout of "yours is coming, they burned the grilled cheese." nice. all said and done, it wasn't a pleasant experience and for a $20 lunch for a 2 year old and me, the food was mediocre at best. i don't think i'll be back.

I've been to Serendipity a few times now to get a sense of what to expect. First I'd like to call out the service. One of my pet peeves is walking in the door of a restaurant or retail shop and not being greeted with in the very least a "Hi". You won't get that from Serendipity either. I've walked up to the counter where they've all had their backs to me and when I've said "hello" myself they still wait a bit before they turn around to acknowledge my presence. In fact, each time I've gone in I've sensed an attitude on one of the gals there that tells me she's not very interested in customer service. It's unfortunate because she's a server there. The food is good, not great though. The Juevos Rancheros on the brunch menu are worth going back for if you can endure the lack of customer service. The bar/lounge isn't much difference. If there are more than three parties in there they tend to get overwhelmed and struggle to get to you. Overall while the food is good, it's not worth the expected tip at the end of the meal. The management needs to retrain or possibly turn over some folks and hire people who are interested in working in customer service. Update: I've visited the bar a couple of times now and received great service. The food is okay but they offer free wifi. I won't go back to the main cafe however hanging out in the lounge on a weekend afternoon when you want to get a little work done is actually pretty nice.

I'm surprised by the multiple poor reviews. My experience was just fine. Nothing spectacular, but both the food and service were good. By looking at the ratings chart, it seems like they are really inconsistent. Maybe they have been trying to work on staffing issues or something. I did notice there was a sign on the table with a number to text the manager with any issues, so maybe the people with bad experiences should take advantage of that. For the record, our server was dealing (very well) with someone behind us who was incredibly combative about the menu and lack of completely vegan options - come on. I know several vegans and it's just a fact of life that you have to be creative and unless you go to a restaurant that specifically advertises veggie/vegan dishes, it's not anything to blame on the management.

I've mainly eaten here for breakfast and it's pretty solid. I get the southwest scramble and a coffee which is enjoyable enough I come back. They have a "well loved" kids area that still does the trick. Good wine, appetizers and salads. The lunch entrees I've had were just okay. I've had spotty service some of the time. They recently opened a lounge next door which is better in my opinion if you are sans child.

Delicious food, excellent coffee (Cafe Vita)! This place is next door to my work, so on my birthday I thought I would stop in and check it out. I was not disappointed. The prices are a bit steep, but the food is delicious and the employees are very friendly. I will definitely go back and highly recommend it. And if you have kids, no problem! They have a great play area!

Incredibly dirty, over priced and inconsistent. Retrain your kitchen staff to clean and focus on consistency of the food that's sent out - getting a plate of grease under my eggs is disgusting and mac n' cheese should not be runny, chicken tenders don't need to be burned down to their bits, learn what "medium" is on a burger, etc etc., Get a cleaning company to come in and get the place cleaned up - you are going to make people sick; cleaning the floor with dirty water isn't cleaning; cleaning tables with dirty towels that leave a funky smell isn't cleaning; don't even get me started on the bathrooms. GROSS. Don't even get me started on the play room - has it ever been cleaned, how is this legal - it's incredibly dirty. Also - just an aesthetic tip, a fresh coat of paint is an instant lift to the nasty white walls near the counter and the bathrooms; it just shows all the years of neglect it's been subjected to.

Virtually no place else was open on New Year's Day so we went here even though Yelp rating was a little low. I was pleasantly surprised. The BLT had delicious bacon on it and the gelato was tasty. Our waiter was friendly and speedy. Prices were less than average for the neighborhood for food but slightly higher for booze. It's kind of a neighborhood cafe so I wouldn't expect anything fancy but I would go back here if I was in the area.

I really wrestled with giving this place 3 or 4 stars, and decided to go with 4. I've spent time in the lounge waiting for my son to finish an activity in the neighborhood, and have also eaten at the café. The lounge is nice--a place where you feel comfortable sitting solo at a table with a laptop. On a different day, I sat in the café and had the BBQ chicken salad. I was really impressed with the food. The chicken wasn't dry at all, and the sauce had a nice zing to it. Service is OK, mostly because there's just one server--but it didn't bother me. She checked on me a couple of times during my meal, which, for me, is completely acceptable service. I didn't notice the dirtiness mentioned in a couple of the other reviews. I will agree that it's a little pricey, but it IS Magnolia, so I'm not sure what people are expecting. Frankly, I'd rather pay a little more, if I'm in the mood for something that isn't pizza or a Subway sandwich.

What a great lunch we had here yesterday! The staff were very polite and welcoming, we didn't have to wait very long for the food, and when it arrived, it was simply delicious! 3 of us had burgers and they were cooked perfectly -- done in the middle but still juicy and well seasoned. Compared to the Pub across the street, they use 1/2 lb burger patties instead of 1/3, the prices are comparable, and the staff have superlative soft skills with the customers! I'll definitely be back here!

Rude service, small portion for the price My wife and I stopped by for a bite of lunch one recent Sunday afternoon and, because we had our German Shepherd our in tow, we took a seat outside next to the sidewalk. I went inside and ordered a Reuben sandwich with fries and an iced tea, which we intended to split. $18 lighter including tip, I walked outside to wait. And wait. Eventually, the counter person brought the Reuben and fries out to us in a "to go" box, plopped it on the table, and scurried away so quickly I didn't even have time to ask for ketchup. The sandwich was good, but small considering the $12.95 price tag, and the fries were "shoestring" fries, the thinnest I've eaten in a long time. They started out hot but quickly lost their heat and their appeal. Maybe we got the attitude we got because we're not local to Magnolia but, whatever the reason, next time we're in the area, we'll find somewhere else to eat.

I love the location, the food is good, but please don't order the chocolate croissant! Gross, eggy, no traditional flakiness or buttery taste that a croissant should have. Maybe it is better if you leave it cold? I can't imagine that is true. Order anything else!

I had a doctors appt in Magnolia and had some blood taken, so I decided to stop in at Serendipity for something to eat/drink before hitting the road to get my blood sugar up. I chose this over Starbucks across the street to support the local independent cafe and it was so disappointing. I walked up to order and there was no one in sight (at noon! the place was packed) so I waited... and waited... and waited... then finally a lady comes up and tells me it will be just a moment and to please wait. I was holding my little boy who was starting to fidget and just wanted to quickly order to go. I was standing there for another 5 min and a second lady approached me saying it would be just a min. This went on and on... The two ladies were closing out tabs, refilling drinks, organizing the pastries and busing dishes. Still not taking my order!! It was so rude. I honestly have never experienced something like that before and didn't know what to do. Finally, I turned and walked out of the restaurant. To be flat out ignored was not only hurtful but totally unprofessional.

Can I please give this place a 0? I've lived in Magnolia my entire life and I was very happy about Serendipity opening because besides coffee shops there really aren't any place to eat breakfast, but if you even think about going past 11am, prepare yourself for a serious case of being locked in a bathroom later. The morning staff and breakfast burrito are both amazing, but the last 2 times I've gotten food to go I've waited for over 30 minutes (the last time being for fish and chips) and the tarter sauce had gone bad and made both me and my boyfriend horribly ill. We decided to give the breakfast one more time and after getting some coffee and juice and having our order taken, we were informed (about 15 minutes later) that the chef wasn't around and the staff was unaware that their sous chef didn't know how to cook the food! Isn't that their job? They gave us our drinks for free, but never again will we ever give them another chance. Run far far away from here.

We aren't often in Magnolia, we are true Eastsiders, so perhaps my review is clouded by the fact that we aren't locals. I thought this place was great. We stopped in for lunch with our 6 year old, who played contently in the small kid area (nice touch) and the staff was super sweet to him (you talk to my kid like he's an actual human and you get an auto-4 star). The two women working there were very pleasant and were a bit stunned that we'd never been in and checked on on consistently and were prompt with water refills and such. The food was great. Prices on par with other diners we frequent, but the turkey club was the best I've had outside NY. I wish you were closer!

This review is for the lounge specifically. I've seen the mixed reviews for this place, but I'll throw my comments in and say that I've had really good luck. I heard that Serendipity was expanding and opening the attached lounge, so a friend and I went to check it out. We went on a weeknight, around 5:30pm. It wasn't full, but there were people there. They had several good wine and beer options on happy hour, and both of us had food that was really good. In fact, we enjoyed our experience here so much that we came again the following week! I felt totally comfortable there, enjoyed my food, and will definitely be back.

I'd give 0 stars if Yelp would let me. We needed to meet up this afternoon with another family and this was the only place in the vicinity that we could find that both had a play area and was open. I got our son settled while my wife arranged for her coffee at the counter. The menu is basically all meat, all the time. The only potential non-meat choice was fries, and hoped to order some if they weren't battered or covered with cheese or ranch or something. Alas, this was not meant to be. The server, a brunette wearing a short-sleeved black top over a yellow camisole or something, actively avoided so much as looking at me despite my overt attempts to get her attention. I gave up after an HOUR of being ignored.

It's just...MEH. We went there because we had a $25 gift card, and not sure if it's worth going back there again. Food was okay and good- First, "FRESH SQUEEZED" lemonade WAS NOT fresh squeezed. I was able to tell it was those concentrated ones, and the price they charged for that ($3.75), I felt like I was cheated. Nachos (with chili) could've been better because there was barely any cheese on it. And they charge $4 to add chili, when it is already a pretty good price for nachos. Beef steak salad- good dressing, but the portion was too small for the price ($14). Turkey burger with sweet potato fries. The fries were good, turkey burger was whatever. Overall, I'd say it's overpriced for what they're giving. I guess because it's a local, private business? The total we paid was $50- I can get better food somewhere else with $50! Didn't get a chance to try their pastries- maybe this place is just better as a cafe.

I can only base my review on the lunch my friend and I had when we went here, but it was quite delicious for some simple fare. I had the French Onion soup and my friend had the mac n' cheese. The former had some nice hearty whole grain bread on top with melted cheese, a refreshing change from the traditional white french bread. I felt it was more like a meal that way, and added to the already flavorful soup. My friend's mac n' cheese had some really nice sharp cheeses, a real zing! Although the sauce was a bit runny, it was still quite good. I would definitely order that again. The staff was really nice, the prices reasonable, and the food good so we're definitely going back!

To say that I came across this place by chance sounds a little too cute, but it happens to be the truth. While looking for a quick meal before work, I wandered past Serendipity. I wouldn't have even noticed it, the sign is fairly small, except that they had a Santa outside and were taking pictures with little children inside. But it seemed like a decent enough place to try. Santa and his helpers were friendly enough (i.e. "go ahead and seat yourself") and there's a fair number of booths at the front of the restaurant. It's actually fairly spacious with the counter situated across from the booths and a wide walking area in-between. I settled on a chili burger and fries (and decided to go with water as the beverage). The chili burger comes with a huge amount of chili topping: I thought that it would be a small amount on top of the burger, but actually it covered most of the plate. This chili comes with loads of chopped tomato (boo to tomato!), but surprisingly also corn (yay for corn!). Presentationwise, the top bun was actually also underneath the burger and was chili-coated. This presented two options: one, since the bun was already coated in chili and was going to make a mess you could just roll with it. Cover yourself in chili and roar with each bite shaking your head wildly and sending sprays of chili right and left. This would probably delight the kids lining up for their Santa pictures (and horrify their parents). Option two was to gather what shreds of culinary dignity were left after ordering a chili burger and eating with a fork and knife. I chose option two. The burger wasn't bad, but about the same taste as if you cooked some ground round from the supermarket. Despite eyeing the tomato chunks, I sort of liked the chili. It's not a Texas-type chili, but more of a sauce and works well with the burger. The fries were a bit of a disappointment: the very thin cut fries without seasoning. The server was reasonable and the prices a little high, but not out of the ordinary for Seattle. I'd say this place is worth a try and the breakfast menu looks interesting. They do stop serving breakfast at 11 am, so you'd have to get up a little early for this.

It's just not good for breakfast. I've never tried lunch or dinner, but breakfast is not worth it. I live in Magnolia, I wanted to love it, but it wasn't good and is inconsistent. The first time I went, it was actually kind of decent which prompted another visit. The second time was bad. The average of my ok first time and terrible second time equals the two stars. I've also eaten in both rooms: once in the lounge and once in the cafe. Service in the lounge is slower since there's only one person working in there, but it's quieter. All the servers that I've seen are very friendly and nice, but not enough to entice me to go back for bad food.

I've been here a few times and never get the feeling that they care about you being there. As a mother I love the idea of a place where my kids can play and I can visit. I wouldn't waste time or money here. There are far better places to go.

This cafe really met a need in Magnolia for a nice every day eatery that is a non-pub or bar venue. It's got a super yummy menu that changes seasonally. It is a wonderful place to come and work during the days -- when school is in session. After school, it can be a bit of a playground. Try the black bean soup.

This is kind of a two different places because there is a cafe that serves breakfast and then a separate bar/restaurant that serves dinner. I have had breakfast on the cafe side four or five times and have never been wowed. The last time we went there we told ourselves that the next time we are thinking of going out to breakfast we should remind each other that we can make a way better breakfast ourselves at home than they can at Serendipity. We tried to go to the restaurant side but the service was so horrible that we didn't end up getting anything because the bartender and waitress wouldn't serve us. Instead of taking a drink order or getting us a menu they continued to talk to friends who were sitting at the bar for 15 minutes before we got up and walked out. I did get up and get myself a menu which was average. Nothing exciting going on and slightly over priced for what you can get a places near by. Definitely not going back any time soon.

We LOVE Serendipity. It's fantastic for families with younger kids, as the dedicated children's play area, allows the Mom's (or Dad's) to joyfully sip on your coffee or wine. The food is pretty decent and the owners are always willing to put something together, upon special request. We've been going for years, every Friday night. Saturday is kids eat free, so that's a huge bonus when looking to eat out, but on a budget.

Worst experience! My husband and I were in the mood for some sandwiches, so we decided to head over to Magnolia. We had the worst lunch here. The service was VERY slow, had to ask for waters and refills. Second my Turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich came out and it was unbelievably disappointing. For $12.50!!!!! I got one slice of thin turkey, and 2 little pieces of bacon and a dab of avocado. My tomato soup was luke warm as well. My husband's sandwich was just ok, but his salad was also pretty depressing. They just put a mound of lettuce with dressing for a side. Is it so hard to put a couple baby tomatoes and a couple slices of cucumber on top???? Don't bother going here if you're looking for a good lunch spot.

The coffee was amazing! They do a great coffee there, but... I was there for food, the service was horrible, not just me but other tables were waiting an hour (an hour, for waffles?), the food (when it arrived) was only so-so. Their price is way to high for the crappy service I got, I will not be returning, unless it is for a discounted late.

I'm surprised to see only three stars! I visit Serendipity weekly and always have a great experience, whether I'm alone using their free wi-fi on my laptop, or taking my young kids out for a meal or a treat. They just got some new toys in the back play area, and new carpet, and it's a fun place for small kids to play and socialize. The coffee and breakfast sandwiches are especially tasty, and kids eat free on Saturday nights.

We are regulars here at Serendipity. I really to love this little place, and the women who work there are great. I have NEVER had bad service. They serve Cafe Vita, which i LOVE, and they do a great job with the coffee. My husband and i come frequently with our son, and he loves it as well. There is a kids play area, so we always sit towards the back booths. I must say that it is a life saver, especially when going out with 2 year olds seems quite impossible. I will say it again, the women/servers there are excellent, patient, and very attentive. I've read some reviews about this place stating that the service was bad, and i don't see why. Everyone has off days, just as in any restaurant, but if you're skipping out on a wonderful breakfast because you think the service is bad, think twice. It's wonderful. We always come in for breakfast, so i can only speak about the food from the breakfast menu. It is all quite good. The kids menu is wonderful, and the perfect amount of food, clean, and very good. My favorite breakfast dish there are the huevos rancheros, which are no longer on the menu, but everytime i go in for breakfast, the women always know that it's my favorite, and assure me the cook can still make it for me. Everything i've tried, and everyone i've taken in here has loved it. It is seat yourself, and there is no sign stating that, but it's pretty obvious, as soon as the servers see you, they bring you a menu. It's not that hard people. Don't judge the quality of a restaurant based on that. If you are a parents, and need some sanity on a rainy/wet morning, come on in for breakfast, have your kids play in the kids area, grab a board game, and relax. There is never any rush, so just stop and smell the coffee. It's a wonderful, family friendly place. I will recommend this place to anyone for breakfast.

Apparently I have been luckier than these other Yelpers because I have never left disgruntled, just full, fat and happy. The food is very simple and comfort food-esque. If I were going to be picky, I would start docking points for lack of atmosphere and cleanliness and not-so-enthusiastic service. But, my experiences have generally been good because I know what to expect from this little local joint, and will keep me returning. MUST try: house-baked potato chip nachos!

We went because of the play area for the kids, which was filthy and the toys were all banged up and flaking paint. Service was slow and the food was terrible, the fries that came with the kids meal was dripping in grease, the pulled pork sandwich was bland and fatty. I will not be back.

Stopped in for lunch with a friend one recent afternoon. We were immediately greeted and seated in a nice comfy booth. Our beverage order (which was just water for both of us) was taken and also brought immediately. So far, so good. We waited a bit to have our order taken. There seemed to be only one server working and she was pretty busy. We were not in a particular hurry, though, so it was no big deal. We both ordered a sandwich from the "specials" menu: Grilled chicken topped with sauteed spinach and mushrooms and served on a brioche. Sounded pretty tasty. And, it was not bad. Unfortunately, when the sandwich was brought out, the "brioche" had somehow turned into an ordinary hamburger bun. And, the problem with that is the thing that distinguished this particular sandwich -- at least on paper -- from any of the other hundreds of chicken sandwiches you can find in Seattle was gone. The other problem is the idea of the sandwich being served on brioche is a big part of why I ordered it to begin with. I really hate when the main thing that drew you to a particular menu item does not actually show up on your plate. The sandwich was served with a nice side salad of mixed greens topped with a light (and not too acidic as so many seem to be) vinaigrette. Brioche disappointment aside, my overall experience here was fine. The food was decent. The service friendly. The atmosphere relaxed. This is not a "destination" restaurant, but, if I happened to live in the neighborhood, I would almost certainly stop in again.

Wish this place was here when we lived in Magnolia! The family and I stumbled upon Serendipity while visiting Seattle in July. It was lunchtime and we were hungry. Simply stated, we had a fantastic lunch at Serendipity. It was a little pricey for lunch, but the sandwiches and salads were wonderful. Definitely worth trying if you haven't yet!

The best coffee in Magnolia, hands down, I wish they opened up at 5am!! Sometimes filled with loud children. The best place to take kids in Seattle for sure! The food is sometimes sub-par, but if you have kids, the play area is usually a good bet to get a chance to eat. Unfortunately, sometimes parents with undisciplined kids show up!!!

Not happy with management. My family use to be regulars (at least 3 times per week), we were never really that happy with anything, but the play room made up for things being lack luster. We stopped going after the third time they changed their pricing and we were surprised by the bill. The playroom is nice, but grimy. Food is okay, but it is better and slightly cheaper across the street at MVP. The kids eat free option is nice, but again they keep changing things on us. Free Kids meal night was Saturdays and my husband and I would use it as an opportunity for a date night and spend way more on drinks then the free kids meal. But, they changed the kids free night to Tuesday. Around the same time, but not at the same time, they changed their menu and started charging more. That is fine, and I understand that but I feel like every time we order chocolate milk something changes. One time we ordered chocolate milk and they gave a box milk. I just took it as a mistake and paid the extra price even though drinks were covered in the meal. The next time we ordered chocolate milk we got another box and I corrected them saying we just wanted milk with chocolate syrup. The server told me that "management didn't want them mixing chocolate milk anymore". Which was weird, but we fine once I knew there was a change. We just ordered milk instead. This last time we went (one week from our previous kids eat free night) they changed the menu from drinks being included with kids meals to not being included. No heads up, nothing until the bill came. I just got too frustrated with little changes all the time, that I am done with it. I honestly don't mind if they charged more money, it is just the constant changes that bother me and not knowing what to expect. I will say the service is good. The servers will remember you and are nice. I am surprised they get bad reviews. The only non excellent experience I've had is with the owner. I read other reviews that said they only give 2 sets of silverware for 5 people but I think they recognize that some meals don't require silverware. But, I am pretty sure it coming from the management because all of the servers do that.

The food and service is terrible. My husband and I along with our friends have given this place many, many tries and they continue to disappoint. It takes nearly 10 minutes for the servers to even notice you once you are seated and they seem to care very little about pleasing. The food is the worst part of the experience. Instead of having so many items on the menu, they should have fewer that they actually do well. They cater to children but the play area is absolutely disgusting. I wouldn't let my child step foot in there and my other mom friends feel the same way. This place is an epic fail because their concept is so great yet they miss the mark at every turn. I also get the sense that the owners don't care either as I have had terrible service from one of the women who owns this as well. I live near the village and I will NEVER go back to this place.

This is a bakery/cafe with a kiddie play area that I love in concept but in reality kind of sucks. The kids area is old- feels dirty and run down. The food is meh- a lot of the baked goods come from elsewhere - Macarina & mighty o, so I find myself here on occasion to pass some time while my girls play. But even that is touchy since the last time I was there the girl working there came back to the kids area and asked them to be quieter. Really?! They are two and were having fun playing till she scared them into wanting to leave. So much for our close to home rainy day play place.

Very nice people -- kinda goes downhill from there. Had to ask several times for a menu. Had to ask for salt. Ketchup. Napkins. Yikes. The burger was decent, but unfortunately at the moment I was ready to gobble it up, I didn't have the necessary tools to carry out that plan. Oh by the way, very kid friendly -- there's even a dedicated playpen.

Good food, and lots of space. Good service, too. More a fan of the lunch items than the breakfast ones, I think, but that's OK. Glad to have them in the neighborhood.

A mixed bag that has a great play area for kids but below average food. The great things about it are that it has a children's play area and you can actually sit at a table with a full lunch/dinner menu while your children play. It is a nicely laid out large space with lots of tables. They also offer a wonderful story time every week!!! The negatives are the food (which is just average) and the prices (which are REALLY high!!!

I frequent Magnolia and love supporting local establishments, but this place was a bad idea. The menu is all over the place. They advertise themselves as a cafe/bistro, yet have a full tex mex menu - it seemed to lack focus and they could be successful if they stick to their core competencies. Second gripe, full bar, yet no beer on tap - that makes no sense and the bottled beer was overpriced. There were also children running around screaming which appeared to belong to the owner and she did nothing to quite them. Then whom I'm guessing was the owner's husband was pounding a hammer on the exterior of the building doing repairs during "dinner" service. We had planned on staying for dinner, but paid out bill and got out of there quickly. I will not return anytime soon.

Great scrambles for breakfast, and the lunch and dinner items are all wonderful. Best part is the kid zone in the back - set em loose and enjoy your food, coffee or anything from their full bar.

Great coffee, pasteries and gelato. We love the kids area and that's why we go there. Unfortunately we have been dissapointed by the food and pretty much don't don't eat there. The kids meals are $$ for what you get. I would say that they should be priced at $4.50 and include an option of plain milk . When we last ordered food there we were not even offered the drink or the fruit w/ our kids meal. Just a small portion of mac and cheese for almost $5.50. They claim that thier only so so mac and cheese is more expensive because they use real cheese but you can get awesome mac and cheese at Metropolitian market for $5.99/lb. Other menu items are ok just not good enough to make us wanting to go back for more.

I used to love to go to this restaurant but, I've had too many mishaps and will not return. The last time was the last straw. Parents love to let their children run up and down the aisle screaming in this place. It's terrible! The servers don't know what to do but, I think they should post some signs or something for people to control their children. I understand there's a play area in this place but, kids don't need to run around and scream here. This has happened so many times--I will not return. Plus, the last time I was in I asked for my dinner to go (since the kids were out of control) and got home and the meal wasn't good at all.

This place has a great location, on a great corner in Magnolia. I visited Serendipity when a Little League parade was going on and people were lining the sidewalks, it made me smile to feel that small town-ness that makes Magnolia so great. The decor is very fitting for what this place is trying to be.. I agree with some other yelpers in that it is more like a coffee house than a restaurant. Maybe I'll try other items on the menu but really this place isn't a "bargain" type spot. I ordered a breakfast burrito and it was decent, but for the money I expected better. For that kind of dough give me a burrito...dare I say it....Chipotle-sized. It was tasty, but really doesn't warrant any superlatives. I could've made the same thing at home. The people working there all seemed fairly young, like high school-aged, but they were all pleasant and looked very nice. It seems that Magnolia has some kids that are raised right, because this isn't the first time I've experienced professional-acting youngsters in this neighborhood. I was so used to the punk ass kids that work in and around the Tukwila area. Since it is only two blocks away from my house I know that I will be visiting Serendipity again, when I do I'll see if my rating will change.

I was surprised at the other reviews for this place because my boyfriend and I had an excellent experience here yesterday. It sounds like they had just changed some things on their menu, so maybe they have made other changes over the last few weeks as well. Anyway, here goes... My boyfriend and I were exploring Magnolia Village yesterday. We decided to have lunch at Serendipity Cafe. The space is charming and inviting and the location is great, right in the heart of Magnolia Village. The service was friendly, quick, and competent. The food was really good! I had the grilled cheese (with sharp white cheddar), which was something amazing, unlike any other grilled cheese I've ever had - in a good way. My boyfriend had the BLT with avocado and really liked it. I got sweet potato fries and he got regular fries. Both were really tasty. The regular fries are the thin kind. They were probably the best fries I've had in a long time. No condiments necessary! Their menu is a little small, but so what? They focus on soup, salad, and sammiches and they have a good variety for that. We didn't have coffee or pastries, but we did get gelato. Mmmmm. Caramel and coconut. Yummy. We peeked into the pastry display on our way out and noticed that they had Mighty-O donuts and some tasty looking Easter cupcakes. If I lived in the area I'd visit regularly!

my favorite breakfast place in seattle!! service is excellent, they get busy on weekends but they are a family-owned business, so cut them a break. the owner is just the nicest woman, I always feel at home. -killer bloody mary's -SALMON EGGS BENEDICT! could it get better than that? -vegetarian breakfast burrito amazing... -excellent coffee very affordable place for brunch make sure to get White coffee!! one of the few places that makes it in Seattle. after moving away from Seattle, I always miss Serendipity! Everyone should support this gem of a business!

We were told this was a great place for breakfast, so when we found ourselves in Magnolia, we thought we'd give it a try. What a bad idea. When we opened the door, we were greeted by a swarm of flies and some filthy tables. My husband and I were swatting at the swarm to keep our kids from freaking out. It was disgusting. Oh, did I mention it is FEBRUARY? Where did the flies even come from? Then we sat ourselves (they do not seat you here, but there is no sign saying that) and then waited. And we waited and waited and waited. There appeared to be only 2 women working the dining room. One was behind the counter engrossed in coffee making and the other was waiting tables. It took 10 minutes for anyone to even come over. Then when the girl took a break from making coffee to come check on us (now 20 minutes into our visit), she asked what we'd like to drink. I told her we were ready to order, so rather than take our order, she simply walked away. No explanation- nothing. Apparently she can only handle drinks. Then we waited some more. By the time someone finally took our order, we had been there for 30 minutes. We ordered basic food; my husband had french toast, the kids split the pancakes and i had the serendipity salad. That took over 20 minutes to arrive. The pancakes and french toast were fine, but my salad was another story. My first stab into the salad pulled out a piece of rotten spring mix. So I proceeded to comb through my salad and pulled out 10-20 pieces of totally rotten, slimy, black pieces of spring mix. When I told our waitress, she apologized and offered to get me another one. Uh, no thanks. So she brought me a cup of "tomato bisque". This was the worst soup I've ever had. It wasn't soup. It was a cup of spaghetti sauce. This was clearly made by someone who doesn't understand what bisque is. It was so thick and overly seasoned with dried herbs. It was terrible. I had two spoonfuls and then just left it. It wasn't worth the effort to eat. When our waitress brought our bill, she apologized again for the salad, and mentioned that people had complained about the lettuce the day before! WHY ARE THEY STILL SERVING IT WHEN PEOPLE TOLD THEM IT WAS BAD?! Really bad quality control. On a positive note, they didn't charge me for my salad or my soup.

Since McGraw Street Cafe switched to a wine-bar aesthetic, Magnolia has needed a locally owned coffee shop. Serendipity is, for whatever the detractors say: 1. locally owned 2. heavily locally patronized What I liked most about the experience there was just how many people in the neighborhood were accidentally meeting up there and talking. There was an excellent community vibe there that, hopefully, the owners of Serendipity will foster and nurture. It's a very welcome addition to my neighborhood. (About 8 million times more welcome than the $(#*& tanning salon that opened next door). Coffee okay, baked goods okay, service rather good, community vibe excellent!

Talk about Serendipity! My date and I were going to go to the International district for sushi, but instead we decided to have dinner near his house in Magnolia. After getting lost, we wound up looking around for a place to eat and saw Serendipity. I was happy to see there was a lounge section for adults. Our server Sharla was wonderful. The drinks were great, Dan was an excellent bartender. The staff was very attentive and friendly, making sure we had what we needed and that we were satisfied. What really blew this place out of the water for us was after we paid for our meal. Sharla called us a cab and made sure to come over and check on us as we waited. Soon we migrated outside so the cab could see us, but after much waiting it never showed. Sharla would come outside to apologize and even called the cab company again. After she was hung up on by Yellow Cab, she tried Orange Cab and we decided to have some more drinks. Orange Cab soon picked us up and we were on our way. Thanks for a great night, Serendipity! The Tuna Melt made for delicious leftovers.

Hooorrrible! WTH???!!! After numerous attempts I am done going here. The food is never the same and not very good. Service-not so great and it takes forever. The screaming kids in the play area is not conducive to having a nice meal and over all the place just sucks. I've finally learned my lesson. Go to the pub across the street.

Look, this place isn't that bad. Do you want to go out of your way to eat here? No! Do you have kids and want to take them to a kid friendly place? Yes- then eat here! It's like two clicks above a McDonald's. Don't go here for a networking lunch or dinner; it's much more of a family establishment. The food is not great, but it's not that bad either. They had a decent happy hour with food and drinks, parking is plentiful, and if you live in Magnolia, it's even better. Would I ever go here if I didn't have kids? No.

My girlfriend and I were headed to Cocoa & Creme a few doors down, but it was closed at 8:45, 15 minutes early. So instead, we found Serendipity. It was pretty empty, being right before closing at all, but we got drinks and gelato. My girlfriend, who tends to be picky about her Chai, said that their Chai was excellent, and my dark chocolate/white chocolate/vanilla hot chocolate (Zebra something, minus the coffee) was also delectable. The gelato was also very good, and the atmosphere was very nice - it's very nicely decorated and lit and such. We sat on one of the window benches with pillows, and it was very cozy. Overall, it's a great place to pick up drinks and dessert at least, as I can't testify to the quality of their food. The staff was friendly and helpful, and it was a pleasant experience. And they didn't close early, to boot. P.S. For future reference, and to save you having to ask for "the middle one," their coffee sizes are "Ball Peen", "Hammer" and "Jack", presumably due to serving Thomas Hammer coffee.

The first time I came it was lovely. I was by myself and the food was great, this time it seemed like a different cafe all-together, the food was lackluster, it was noisy and the service took forever!! Great Food, Good Coffee, Awesome Service. I've never had a bad experience here and located at the heart of downtown Magnolia, its becoming a staple to stop through anytime i'm in the area. Its locally owned and operated too which is always a plus. You can stop in for a quick coffee, or also dine in for a meal. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, you name it.

It was one of those nights where no one wanted to cook and we found ourselves in the Magnolia Village in casual attire so we thought we would try out the empty but inviting Serendipity Cafe. I had some kind of turkey sandwich or panini with fries and it was ok, as it was very much a cold sandwich that had been put in a panini press. The sandwich was good it's just that I must have had a different idea of what I was getting than what I received. I will be coming back in the future.

The food was very good and tasted very fresh. Prices are reasonable, and the owners (two women) were very nice. It would be a great place to come back to to play games, bring the family, or have a very relaxed meal. Service is slow, so if you are in a hurry, look elsewhere.

Here is why I don't go anymore: I drop my kid off for school just before 8am. The last time I went in for a breakfast sandwich after dropping her off, I was rudely told that they don't serve food before 9am. I asked for clarification, as I was looking at the menu, which listed the breakfast sandwiches and coffee, and stated that I'd just had one the week prior. She just looked at me and shrugged. I looked at her, cancelled my coffee (which she had started to make) and walked across the street to the chain. I'd rather support the small business, but the small business has to offer two things: pleasant service and products. I was accepting of their poor service when they served sandwiches, but when they took that away, there was no reason for me to visit. Prior to that visit, here is what I WOULD have said about Serendipity: I've been here a few times for coffee and pasteries. I usually order the breakfast sandwich, which takes FOREVER, but is yummy. The coffee is great too. I understand the comments about the service being poor. I've had a couple of good visits and more that were disappointing due to the rudeness of the service. I love that there is a kids' area in this place. UPDATE: 02/04/2011 After a long hiatus, and multiple requests from my preschooler, I caved and went back. It was just my little girl and me, for dinner on a Friday. The first thing I noticed was the overly bright lighting. The second thing I noticed was the smell, which was that of a mildewy rag. Normally, I would have turned around, but the cheerful staff was advising me to "sit anywhere" and my kid was all the way back in the play area, so I soldiered on. We ordered mac-n-cheese with meat for her (hey Serendipity, kid's meals should be offerred with a veg or fruit) and the sliders trio + sweet potato fries for me. The staff was plesant and patient, which was a huge improvement. We spent the wait time playing with the grungy toys in the play area. I know this space is well used, but it looks like it needs a steam cleaning. Then the food arrived. There wasn't a lot of thought in presentation. My girl's food was tasty. One of my sliders was delicious (bacon and blue), one was tolarble, if not overcooked (plain cheese) and one was inedible (chilies). The portion of fries was a great value. They were tasty and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, I don't think that's enough to offset the cons. I'll eat elsewhere.

Sweet little "mom & pop" cafe by day, lounge by night. Friendly service, good portion sizes, endless coffee refills and GF toast! My sausage patty was a bit tough, but the bacon was tasty. A nice spot for me to catch up with a friend. Street parking wasn't bad either.

I come here solely to drink beer and play Golden Tee- which is my #1 favorite bar video game. Bar service is always prompt and friendly- and it's never too busy to get a drink. Beer prices are OK. I've tried their food once and and it was fine- nothing to write home about- but the beer is cold and the Golden Tee machine is always open- so I'm a repeat customer. The vibe is casual and there are usually older locals sitting at the bar during the day. Street parking is easy to find.

I love their new patio area and will love it more when the temperature drops back to the 70's. Lounge area opens at 12. They have good selection of beer on tap. There's plenty of screens for sports fans too. I like their extreme nachos, chili and chicken salad sandwich. Come here when a band is playing, it's so much fun. Cafe has good breakfast options and they also carry some stuff from Macrina. I like sipping my coffee and reading a book on their comfy leather armchairs.

Every time I'm near serendipity I Have to stop by, even if it's just for a smoothie. It's got everything you could ask for in a cafe, to put it simply. Along with being nestled into a nice little neighborhood that's somewhat separated from regular Seattle.

Great place if you have children....nice play area... very noisy if you don't. Not much of an ambiance. Was not satisfied with any of the dishes I've eaten......been there 3 times....each time my food was not even lukewarm.....quite a letdown! The toast is always cold and on the very dry side.

Stopped in the Serendipity for the first time last night, after a couple friends had told me I should check it out. Overall I thought it was well put together inside, the menu had a good variety to choose from, with light Mexican cuisine, variety of salads, burgers, sandwiches and wraps. There is a little bit of everything on the menu, so it make a good place to dine, if no one can agree on one type of food. The staff was very friendly and helpful throughout the evening. We needed a quiet place to sit down, get a bite to eat and do some work on the laptops. The WiFi was free and the connection speed was good. Once we started working the server promptly cleared the table, but kept bringing us water and making sure we had everything we needed. For dinner I had the BBQ chicken salad and we started with the Gorgonzola fries, both were solid choices. The food was good, so no complaints here. If you are looking for a casual meal out in Magnolia, I would definitely give Serendipity a shot.

Serendipity is an outstanding place to enjoy a meal in the Magnolia community. Having been able to dine in today at the Cafe, the food quality remains just as wonderful as the delivery order I enjoyed over a year ago. The service is friendly, the prices are competitive (for the area), the same amazing shoestring fries and perfectly seasoned fish from the fish and chips. All in all an outstanding cafe that I look forward to returning to. Thanks Serendipity Cafe and Lounge!

FILTHY DIRTY, smelly and cold. Filthy children's play area. Black toys :( how difficult can it be to maintain an 8x5 ft area for your most loyal and vulnerable customers- babies and toddlers?? :( Tragic that magnolia families are so desperate for a family restaurant as to subject their babies to such a place. Clearly serendipity takes advantage of these families and its the only way they stay in business. Shameful- they deserve better. I don't think this place has ever been cleaned. I can't believe the health dept. has not shut them down. I've had dry muffins, bad coffee, mediocre serendipity breakfast and last (and least) SLIMY, NASTY CHICKEN SALAD SAND. WORST THING IVE EVER EATEN. (GAG) i kindly told them it was inedible and was told my transaction would be voided. When I returned w/ my statement to show that i was in fact charged, the cashier said she would go get the owner and when she returned, the owner was "busy" and would "telephone" me. Never called:( I wanted to like this place- it has great potential if the owner remotely cared about people. A couple of positives- a sweet lady named Janet tells children stories here on Tuesdays and all but two servers seem to genuinely like people. Hopefully this is constructive criticism and til then- beware!

Excellent Cobb salad! Lemonade a bit pricey. Mac and cheese was okay, needed a little something- maybe Beechers cheese or some other smooth white cheddar. My son wants to order the Cobb salad when we go back. The apple cider vinaigrette was light and the salad was not soggy. The fresh greens made this salad great.

I LOVE this place! The play area next to the tables is beyond perfect for getting my littles out of the house for a bit. I often bring my friends along and they love it too. And to too it off, the menu is great - cafe and dinner, what more could I ask for? - and your staff is always friendly. :)

3.6/5 stars Just moved into Magno, and this was the first restaurant we tried out. And yeah it was great! Friendly, effective, and quick service. Menu had some good looking goods. Ordered the carne asada nachos and they were The right amount of chunky, crunchy and cheesy. A little more expensive though then I hoped. Apparently they offer a lot of specialty nights (jazz shows, puppet shows, story nights) which I could see being interesting! There's a full in playground area in the back, which I guess would come in handy as a parent. Summary: I had an exceptional experience here, with tasty food and genuine service, though it might be geared towards an older, more mothering crowd. Nothing that detracted from my experience, but nothing that's pulling me back for more.

All I wanted was some lunch. I walked in, went up to the counter and they had me have a seat. The server brought me the menu and I ordered a drink while looking over my options. The server doubled as the barista so she was busy taking orders at the counter. When she was finally free after 10 minutes she walked right by my table and over to some other patrons who seemed like good friends and was reminiscing and the like. 10 more minutes went by. I will add that she was not alone, there was another server who was walking around stocking the pastry area and not checking to see if anybody needed help ordering food. I had now finished my large drink and still didn't have an order placed. I didn't have any more time to give this restaurant on my one hour break from work. I decided to go up to the counter and just pay for my drink and get out of there to hopefully get a bite elsewhere before my lunch was up. I walked up to the counter and the very same waitress was standing nearby the counter showing a fellow employee her phone and laughing about something meanwhile totally ignoring me. She finally looked up after 2 minutes and saw me standing there. I told her I would like to pay for my coffee and leave. At this point I didn't even bother giving feedback to her, she clearly did not care. She cashed me out handed me my receipt, no apologies, zero awareness of the situation. I went to subway and received great customer service with no delay. My advice to this establishment is to be aware of their customers, they are priority number one.

I take my son to the cafe where he can play in the awesome enclosed safe play area. Whether I need to work or just want to relax, it is a great place to go if you have kids. The food is awesome, everything is home made and I have not had anything less than awesome. The owner and the staff are super great, always make you feel welcome, and give amazing service. I highly recommend this place to anyone!

Music was so loud you can't even think. This is like a bar for people who hear sound through touch. Everything else is 3 star

I can't stop thinking about the gluten free, vegetarian eggs Benedict or breakfast sandwich (I got both on the same visit...). SO tasty. They must use a panini press for the bread because it was outrageous. Service was fast and friendly. Prices are very reasonable. My husband loved his breakfast burrito. Located on Magnolia's Main Street, which is a beautiful area.

I wandered in for a quick bite to eat, while waiting on a friend, and noticed a play area for kiddos, so directly to the lounge I went. I did not want to deal with THAT on a late Saturday morning. I think this was the place Archie Bunker went to meet his only friend, Slim, or whatever his name was. I can just imagine old timers sailor gaiting their way out of here. It gets a star for being lost in that era. I ordered a French Dip from the bartender. I glanced at a customer's french fries and saw they were those thin little bastards so I opted to get the salad, which is a rare occurrence. The tender basically told me I wanted the house vinaigrette and so I wasn't arguing. It came in a reasonable amount of time, the beef was tender and moist, maybe not the freshest and it probably came pre-sliced out of a bag/frozen pouch thing. The au jus was, well, you know that powdered stuff you add water to? Yea that, perfectly okay, I mean who makes their own prime rib and jus these days? (No, really I want to know.) The bread was made to look like it had been pressed as in a panini, except the bread was more like a hoagie bun than a French roll (or ciabatta for panini sake.) Now, I'm no expert (yeah, okay, I'm an expert -- French dip and I go way back) but at least serve the thing on a French roll/baguette, toast the inside with butter, on the griddle. Dip the meat in the jus to heat it through. Then throw it on the buttered... ah, why am I telling YOU how to make the damn thing? The salad greens were fresh and the dressing was mildly intriguing, almost tasty. Anyway, no harm no foul, I took one look at the menu and knew exactly what I'd be getting. Thankfully it wasn't food poisoning, okay, maybe a little mild indigestion. I do know I've had much more pleasant experiences at much cleaner restaurants and still walked away with mild indigestion, so can I really blame the food? YES! It's what I'm digesting. Clever 1, self restraint 0.

Came in here for a tea and a scone, and to sit and internet while I waited for a friend. I picked the place originally for the fact they were open until midnight, but then they start turning off the "OPEN" signs, and turning off the lights at 8pm. Is there a mistep here? I was also never told to leave, but the lack of lighting was enough of a sign. At least TELL ME you're closing. I left because my scone was dry. So there.

Been living in magnolia for over a year now. Been to this place for both breakfast and lunch. I do enjoy their food very much. Their breakfast burritos are large and in charge. I've also had their huevos rancheros which was pretty tasty. On the lunch menu, I've had their BLT and buffalo chicken panini, both which I enjoyed very much. They've got a full bar/lounge attached to the restaurant, ordered a delightful bloody in the past. Only reason I'm giving 3 stars, is because they do have a children's play section towards the back of the place. Now don't get me wrong, I love kids, so it's mostly the reflection of those parents who don't watch their kids. If your child is screaming at the top of their lungs and chucking their toy across the table in a crowded restaurant, please, make them stop. And if your child has wandered away from you and decided to creepily stare me down while I'm trying to enjoy my chicken panini, please come over and remove them.

Wow! Where do I start?..... Unclean. I am considering a call to the health department. Staff are ignorant and unhelpful. They are more concerned with checking their phones to see if "he or she has responded to said text message yet" and then troll Facebook a bit more. "um excuse me? do you mind if I order? oh, you do. My bad. Guess I'll wait.... or just go somewhere else so you don't loose your spot on your newsfeed. There was a woman (Brunette just past shoulder length hair) who was there and she seemed like she was a manager or maybe even the owner. I think I heard someone call her Jen. She scowled at my daughter as she tried to go towards the play area and then I paid the check only to have her look at the tip and then look back at me with contempt! Please forgive me for not wanting to give up hard earned money for being treated like a bag of inconvenient trash. Do yourself a favor and find don't even consider this place. It'll save you a crappy experience that you don't need.

Germ farm for the kiddos? Check! What is wrong with parents? Seriously. If I wanted to bring home a gastrointestinal illness I would find tastier and more affordable ways to do it. Mediocre food? Check! Oh and at prices that are for actual restaurants with actual good food, too. This is a coffee shop trying to be something it's not. If you enjoy eating marinara sauce from a cup and calling it "tomato bisque soup" while trying to choke down a half-rotten spinach salad this is the place for you. I'm waiting for the food poisoning to set in. This was my second and last attempt at this place. My first visit was three years ago; and I live in the area. So that's saying something. It's saying this place sucks.

First off, I will tell you that I am a frequent bar, restaurant and tavern goer in Seattle. This review is my experience while watching the Hawks vs Green Bay, opening night -- GO HAWKS. Serendipity Lounge is the best and worst of a neighborhood bar. First, the good - the food is solid. Though understaffed, the servers are attentive and work hard. The bad - the lounge attracts old-time drunk locals. For example, I was bar up with my friend and g/f when a customer moved outside to smoke. I decided to shut the open door as the smoke was blowing in. When he walked in, he opened it. The owner, went back and shut it. The drunk went back out and smoked again, this time I shut it when he was smoking. He was one of those bitter guys who knew his smoking offended people and enjoyed it. He proceeded to come in and give me the "stare-down" upset about me closing the door. Meanwhile, the Hawks game is going on, I have a big bet on the Hawks and the Over and this drunk local tool is giving me a hard time. Like all I, or for that matter, anyone in the joint needs, is this guy with an attitude and negative energy in this nice local magnolia pub. I chose the road less traveled and approached the owner about my experience. I expressed my discontent with not only the drunk tool smoker but the lack of a bouncer - who should be dealing with this, not the customer. She "spoke" with the drunk, who by this time had amassed his group of red faced drinkers, and she walked away with a peace offering to me - he will go out the back to smoke. At this point the Hawks were struggling (mind you, we had ordered three burgers and got served them) during this time-frame of 15 minutes. We chowed down burgers (which were good) and got out of there. The good news is the Hawks rallied (sans the pub and the drunk) and both the side and total covered. What I thought was an ideal local pub, where I could go to watch the game and relax, turned into a stressful evening. A bouncer and an experienced person in dealing with alcoholics as customers might have done better. And my fault in all of this was I trying to keep a smoke free environment for friend with cancer. In conclusion, the drunk was a cross between Captain Kangaroo and Charles Bukowski with neither the humility or talent. "there are worse things than being alone but it often takes decades to realize this and most often when you do it's too late and there's nothing worse than too late"

The food is in no way extraordinary, or even notably good. Some of the staff are super awesome, some are super awful. But it's in Magnolia; that's worth mentioning because not much else is...in Magnolia. And there is a play area- not a ball pit and slide area, but a nice, designated space filled with toys that kids from 2 to 8 seem to enjoy. What I'm saying is this: Serendipity is okay. We come so my son can play with new toys and new kids, and so I can drink after a long day helping others navigate their 1st world worries. Paying for food is just the price of admission.

My husband and I with our two children spent a very short while in the peaceful and quaint Magnolia. Along it's main drag of shops is Serendipity Cafe and Lounge. The service is, most of the time, great. Certain servers are great and work hard. It is a place for families or just a casual gathering because of its size. The only thing I have ordered here is the Chicken Tostada. It is really tasty and delicious. Pastries and drinks are great. I just have my main choice of meal. When it comes to the play area for children, sadly, it seems the parents just let there children run a muck. The other day I had to tell some pretty strong personality older elementary age girls to not take up or crowd so much space because other people have there children wanting to play in the area as well. Luckily they were somewhat understanding. If I was a little girl, they would intimidate me and I would feel like I had to wait at my table for them to leave. Then some other boys came later and were not kind to my kids. Stressing again the need for control for family restaurants that have play areas. I did not want to just pull my children out of there and let the other kids feel they can do what they were doing. I addressed the issue kindly to them. Glad that no parent confronted me about that yet. Also there is a playhouse that you are not to sit or climb on top of the roof (common sense in a restaurant). There used to be a sign saying "not to climb" but someone (I was told) crossed out something to allow them "to climb". The restaurant had to take it away. A little girl gets on the roof and says her dad does not mind what she does, basically "do what I want". Now I see the picture for what a child sees now; no differentiation between house rules (if any) and public outings. On that same day, I could tell the manager, a woman, was stressed, but she addressed issues openly to her employee about mistakes she was making. It was not too loud, but I noticed. She can be nice at times. Things would flow better in every business if people would talk nicely and guide kindly others out of issues having to do with the business. Bottom line, service, depending on who you have, are very sweet. The manager should take some notes. There needs to be better communication between workers as well as the parents who do not attend their children (manager/owner discard playhouse if they cannot talk to the parents or tell them to leave). It is better to have really happy customers then to put up with those that do not handle their broad well. It is a nice place to come so come and judge for yourself. I have not tasted all the food, but if my choice makes me come back to eat more of it, how much more for the other meals? There is a lounge open so there are options. Magnolia is beautiful so stop by.

$8 for 2 pancakes and maybe 1/8 cup of fruit. Make sure you don't take your kid to the bathroom as they'll clear your table (including the food you were still eating) and remove your belongings.

I'm at Serendipity at least a couple times per month, and my husband goes there even more frequently. We particularly enjoy the lounge for weekend brunches. It's dark and quiet, unlike the cafe side of the restaurant, which is usually packed with loud families. I'm so surprised to read the reviews about poor service; the staff at Serendipity have always been funny and awesome with us. Once or twice they've been behind in the kitchen and our food has come out slower than usual, but the servers have warned us up-front about that before we order. I would rate this place 5 stars, but a couple items on the menu are hit or miss. As much as others are raving about the mac and cheese, I would rate it "meh," especially when it's part of a breakfast dish. Also, the huevos was served with soft corn tortillas, which is basically sacrilege in my book. Favorites include the monte cristo french toast, the salmon scramble, and the panini breakfast sandwich on their 'lighter bites' menu. The bonus of this place is their espresso drinks are better than the other coffee shops in the village.

This is one of my favorite little places to go on weekday mornings or for lunch with my friends. I really do love Serendipity so much! They have a fantastic menu lineup with a little bit of everything, and most every single item is outstanding. All-stars on the menu would be the turkey/bacon/avocado sandwich, the mac & cheese, and any espresso beverage. I'd say I'd only dock a star on the issue of some breakfast items being a little hit and miss, and other items being way overpriced (salads) over items that are much more filling & tastier than you'd expect (most any sandwich). The staff is lovely, parking is always easy, and the atmosphere is very small-town and welcoming. I adore the days I get to have a meal at Serendipity. It's a very calming place to be. :)

I went here on New Year's Day, and had a really great experience. I'm giving this place a five star rating, maybe not because it's the greatest place in the world, but because to me it was a five star moment. First, they were pretty much the only place open on New Year's Day. That alone should give them five stars. But then it goes on from there. The service was excellent, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was really cool. They really cared about my dairy allergy, checking twice with the chef to make sure that the thing I ordered didn't have any dairy it. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich, and it was just about the best tasting chicken salad sandwich I had ever had. It tasted fresh, kind of healthy, but really really good. Then at the end, I ordered some of their gelato (The strawberry gelato is dairy free!). I also really like the vibe of the place. It reminded me of a small diner in my hometown and it felt very comfortable to eat there. They had plenty of room to seat us (group of 7) and it was a good overall experience. Try it, and if your experience is anything like mine, you won't be disappointed.

Once again, I'm a little surprised by the lower review here... Maybe it's the abundance of screaming children that does it? Hmmm, go to the other side where it's kid-free and the tunes are good. Ok, Serendipity isn't the best place I've ever been, but considering I've been quite a few times, and as a vegetarian, I can always find something that pleases me and my non-veggie friends alike. The food is consistent (great paninis and salads, and the salads are never overdressed), as is the service, there are pretty nice peeps that work here. There are two sides to Serendipity, the side with screaming children that never seems to slow down, and parents *do not* understand the concept of discipline - and the "lounge" side, which is essentially a bar with multiple booths and tables. I took my mom here once for a late lunch, thinking we could sit on the restaurant side (aka screaming kid side) and sure enough, just as our iced teas came to the tables, the kids began. And the parents don't seem to give a sh**. This is officially *the* spot for lazy/ lame parents to drop off their rugrats, drink beer and ignore them entirely. So, we got up, went to the other side, and had a nice lunch. Strangely enough, they must've sound-proofed the joint, I never hear those brats on the other side. The food is pretty darn good, although I do wish they had some more vegetarian options... I've had really tasty veggie paninis with pesto and sun dried tomatoes (yum), strawberry salad in the summer, on a bed of mixed greens, with walnuts and a sprinkling of cheese, my mom had a very interesting "special" here once, it was homemade potato chips Irish style (don't ask, I don't remember) and she really liked it. The husband has had the mac and cheese, which was rich and tasty, and some other sandwiches too. Would love to see a veggie burger and some other tasties. Maybe you guys will read this? All in all, a nice little spot, with consistent food. My biggest pet peeve, I've often got food that's not *super* hot, which drives me nuts. Other than that, no complaints. Oh, other than those bratty god-dang kids.

I didn't see any of the problems mentioned in other reviews even though many are recent. Some things to mention that others have not. They have a full liquor license, so I had a champagne cocktail like the pretty princess I am. I also had some meatloaf, salad, and gelato. It was all splendid and seemed to be priced fairly. They have a playroom for kids while their parents eat things? Sounds perfect for this neighborhood. Seems a nice place run by nice people. These reviews paint a picture of a highly bitchy neighborhood. I don't get it.

Food was great. I ordered the wedge salad, gorgonzola fries, and beef sliders. When asked how everything was I said great and requested hot sauce. Not only did the hot sauce never come... I waited about 10 minutes for the check to come. I think she forgot about me :(

Very mediocre. I love that they have a place for the kids and the booths up front are nice, but I was not impressed at all. Got a burger and waffle fries. The burger was past well done and the waffle fries had been dipped in some kind of batter but weren't very crispy.

I am so hesitant to give Serendipity two stars because it probably only deserves one. Every time we decide to give this restaurant another try, we aren't there ten minutes before the bad memories come rushing back. Sure, it's kid-friendly, with a big play area in the back that usually sports a doll house and a train table, at the least. You can send the kids in there to play (and they are happy to go), but you're going to find yourself getting up and down from the table every 2 minutes to mediate some dispute because "that kid took my train." The menu is generally bland and uninspired. A swing and a miss, as far as getting flavors to blend. The southwest salad was never more than a pile of distinct ingredients that never came together into a cohesive dish. More often than not, my kids don't finish their meals. We have never -- NEVER -- had even acceptable service at Serendipity. We've had a waitress who completely forgot to put in our order and only realized it close to an hour after we walked in the door. We've had the wrong meal come out. We've had half of our meals come out but others not. We've sat without refills and with an absent waitress for long periods of time. However, the absolute WORST experience was when I ordered the gluten free macaroni and cheese (a new menu item -- which is appreciated, because there was precious little a gluten free person could eat on their old menu) and it arrived at the table with BREAD ON TOP OF THE PASTA. Now, you'd think it couldn't get worse, but when it was sent back, it arrived back at the table within three minutes. That's OBVIOUSLY not enough time to re-do the order. The kitchen merely plucked the bread from the top of the entree and sent it back out, which is a HUGE no-no when dealing with allergens that any food handler should know! On the plus (?) side, we've had more comped meals at Serendipity than any other restaurant we've ever eaten at...

Discovering this cafe was a serendipity indeed. The place has a diner feel but friendly service and the food was tasty. Then again, I was ordering bar food at the bar side during happy hour with a glass of beer on the side. Maybe my rating is slightly bias. Still it's not a bad place to grab a drink and some snacks. I didn't expect high class here and was overall satisfied with what we ordered and ate.

When the restaurant opened a couple of years ago, we gave it two chances. The food wasn't good, and the service was even poorer. They just opened an addition - a full service bar, sharing the same kitchen. No surprise, the food is still poor. The bar service was very slow, but not because of effort - there simply wasn't enough staff. Verdict - nah!

This is a really nice family cafe and coffee shop. We're new to Seattle so it's nice to find someplace kid-friendly to take my three year old on the rainy days. There's a play area in the back with tables and booths next to it as well as family style bathroom with changing table for babies and step stools so little ones can reach the sink to wash hands. This cafe is also only a block from the excellent Magnolia park playground so you can do both on nice days. The food choices are great and again, lots of selections little people will eat. We had a cup of bean soup with ham and it was actually a small portioned cup, exactly the right size for my three year old. The latte was good, not too frothy, and we had a brownie from a local bakery that was also very good. The 'kids' hot chocolate was just warm, not scalding hot which is important, and was in an appropriately sized cup with a lid. All of this was only $12.00 so this is definitely an affordable spot for Moms with tots to get a small light lunch like we did. The Barista and waitstaff were very friendly and helpful, smiling and attentive, coming around the back tables often for refills. It was 'storytime' hour when we arrived so we got in on the tail end of that with lots of toddlers for my son to play with too. The only reason I am not giving this five stars is that I felt the play area was a little dirty. They need to wash the plastic bins of toys and play 'kitchen' and house down with some cleaner wipes, especially as many kids are there on a daily basis. I'm not a super hyper germaphobe by any means but the stuff was really visibly dirty.

The food was pretty good. The play area is a definite plus. Our server was very nice and luckily we weren't in a rush because when we ordered she told us it would be at least half an hour (ended up being more like 45 minutes). It was nice of her to make sure we knew in advance, but an explanation would've been nice so we would know if this is a normal thing for them, or if something was unusual. Will probably go again because of the play area, but if it takes that long again, won't be back for a third time.

Terrible food. I asked for the soup and half sandwich. The server was gracious to hear my complaint about the cold soup that looked like a paste, you could turn the cup upside down and the soup would hold onto the cup :) I ended up paying $10 for half sandwich and a coke. Look forward to better places in Magnolia.

This restaurant is genius in that it has a play area for kids. It's a thoughtful, perfect neighborhood place. The staff are amazing with kids of all ages. The food is decent, but nothing to get really excited about. The neighborhood feel and the kid friendly environment add all the extra flavor needed!

Nothing at all flashy but the price This is a place where you have to ask whether the people who work there expect good service when they're out to lunch or dinner. Our meal here this afternoon ranged from standard to well below standard, and everything could have been better with a small amount of attention. First off, the back section of the restaurant is verging on being a shit hole. The kid area is convenient, but the tables that face the back wall also face the back hallway. That area has all the charm of the loading dock at your neighborhood Safeway. The paint is ripped off the walls and the floor is just nasty. I've certainly seen worse, but not somewhere that charges $15 for a small lunch meal. The food is not good. It's what you'd expect at a nice museum cafeteria. Without enough experience to know whether the ingredients go from truck to freezer to plate, I don't have enough evidence to suggest otherwise. It's certainly cooked like it is. Sure, it's cute that they put ears on the pancakes for the kids, but my kids ate the $4 bagel and left the pancake because it was crispy. My food, fresh veggies, were cut long before my meal and mushed together. My wife's tacos were not terrible-looking, I didn't eat them. Service was a joke. I don't know why restaurants hire people with no experience, but this place does and it hurts them. After 4 requests to our waitress for water, she blamed it on a peach-fuzz-beard kid who was running food like it's his fault she came back to the table 3x and didn't notice it wasn't there yet. 4 people at the table? Cool, they'll give you 2 sets of silverware and just 2 total napkins. I'm tired of typing, I boned them on the tip because they stink at giving food to people. Bottom line: It looks cute from outside, but don't go there unless you have something else to do in there besides appreciate your meal.

Local + expensive should = exceptional if you want me to come back to support your friendly neighborhood local business. The bf & I, in our search for our local faves, came here for the "best burgers in the neighborhood". Well, we would have eaten them at a dirty table if I hadn't asked the waitress if she wouldn't mind cleaning our table off first. I mean, the place is cute and quaint with the crazy local art on the wall and the special little play room for the kiddies, but the service wasn't totally welcoming, especially when we mentioned that we were new to the neighborhood. We ordered a couple burgers with fries and a beer for me. Had a bottle of ketchup on the table that was almost empty and a little gross around the edges. I asked the bf to just grab one of off the table behind us. Service was a little slow. Our bill was ridiculous for what we ordered. So far, this has been the worst value, or lack thereof, in a meal that we've experienced. I had suggested to the bf that maybe we could try breakfast here, but even IF that happens, it will probably be just me and probably just coffee.

I've been into the new Serendipity Lounge three times now and left empty-handed each time due to poor service. I waited 10 minutes each time and didn't get so much as a menu from the bartender who was too busy feeding Bud Lights to the gentleman right in front of him at the bar. Needless to say, I won't be going in again. If you are looking for a good drink with great service in Magnolia, head across the street to The Nook!
