I am so glad this food truck has come to Wine World. It is rare to get something other than ordinary in a sandwich place that's walkable to the U-district. Ian definitely has his act together, slow cooking his meats (pork or beef) from 3 - 12 hours and choosing quality ingredients from quality purveyors. I'm a sucker for a quality BBQ pulled pork sandwich but I have yet to find one in the NW that is worth having - until today! The pork is tender as it gets, the roll from Essential Baking is the right balance of tensile strength and dough to hold together the contents, and the BBQ sauce from Uncle D's is smoky with just enough spice to make my bald pate dewy! I skipped the pickles and greens on the sandwich (I'm a purist), but I am definitely going to go back for more. Maybe I'll try the cheesesteak or the banh mi next time. Seven to eight bucks is a bargain for these huge subs.

Great friendly neighborhood find right behind Cal Anderson park. Masterful rich and tasty sandwiches with quality ingredients. Lovely kale salad for the right price $3. Bonus is that the staff is very welcoming to dogs. The owner used to train dogs - he played with and helped calm my rambunctious puppy down.

I had the Chicken Pesto, The BBQ pork, and the Banh Mi and all three were spectacular and really well priced. As a native Portlander, I am glad to see the food cart culture spreading north! If you are in the Wallingford area (or if you are not) I would highly recommend stopping by. Also the dude that runs the place is a super nice guy! That is worth an extra star in my book.

Scratch is in a friendly & welcoming converted row house with lots of air and light. I classify it as a coffee shop that serves up sandwiches and good tunes. It has a great coffee shop vibe. This my go-to place that I go when I have a few hours of work to do and need to get out of the house. I've never found it packed, but there are always people here. Every sandwich is available veggie style with a mushroom base. Update: they serve beer now!

2 words: Pulled Pork. Best 8 bucks I've spent in a while. I'll definitely be back.

What a comfortable sandwich shop with indoor and outdoor seating. The chicken pesto sandwich was absolutely delicious with so many fresh flavors on an outstanding, soft roll. The menu of hot and cold teas is ample and varied. Paying the bill on their IPad was fun too. I'll return to this cute, friendly neighborhood sandwich shop.

Don't be fooled by the name- it's all hot sandwiches (no cold-cuts), but they're big and delicious. They're also packed tight and clean for to-go orders.

Scratch Deli is a nice addition to 12th Ave. They are in the same converted house as Republik of Koffee. It is a pretty nice spot, lots of room to sit inside and several tables outside. I've been here a couple of times and the people working are very nice. There isn't much of a wait for coffee, but there is a bit of a wait for food, one that is worth it because the sandwiches are quite good. The one stand out for me was the cuban sandwich, made with beef because they were out of pork (they have been out of at least one item the few times I've gone). The beef was very good. The condiments worked really well with the sandwich. The sauces were in good proportion to the sandwich. The banh-mi is also good. I like the cilantro dressing, it has good flavor without being overwhelming. The pickled things are delicious. I would eat a sandwich with just the pickles. It was just enough food, both for my belly and for the price. I will definitely go back to try more of the sandwiches.

The Banh Mi and Cuban sandwiches we had were great! The prices are good, they have good beer (and cider) on tap and everything is locally sourced. On top of that, their patio makes for a good place to enjoy lunch.

Apparently the Seattle food truck vendor scene has a new member.........Scratch Deli opened today & the truck is parked at the Wine World parking lot on 45th, literally right along side I-5. Their niche is that everything served is either made from scratch or obtained from a local, sustainable business or vendor from a farmers market. Today I had the pulled pork sandwich and it was STELLAR! Lean pork with a perfect amount of BBQ sauce that had great zip to it. It also had greens & pickles on the yummy fresh hoagie roll. The pickle added amazing tang and crunch to the sandwich. My neighbor had the potato salad which she raved about; sliced potatoes with an amazing sauce. Next time I am hungry while cruising up or down I-5, I know where I will be stopping for a quick bite of fresh deliciousness!

Bahn mi was extremely flavorful, pork was extremely moist and great selection of beers.

I've been really fascinated by food trucks lately but unfortunately, they are always a hit or miss. Scratch Deli is a hit for all the right reasons. The owner who makes all the sandwiches is super friendly, the ingredients are fresh, prices are reasonable ( you get a lot for what you pay for), and the location is pretty convenient (there is PARKING next to the food truck). I ordered the cuban sandwich which consists of pulled pork, carmelized onions, pickles, mayo, mustard. This was an amazing sandwich because everything just tasted...really fresh and good. The guy who made our sandwich didn't skimp on the meat and even asked us if we wanted pickles (which were actually not your typical pickle, but nonetheless delicious!) The pork was really tender and not dry at all! Overall, really good sandwich! The only thing that I might suggest is probably toast the bread a lil more to get that nice crunchiness, but that's just my personal preference. :) OVERALL, try this food truck!!!! It definitely beats getting a craptastic sandwich from u-district.

Had the bahn mi. it was very good. it wasn't very traditional, but that's fine with me. I'm definitely going back to try the rest of the menu.

Best gluten free bun/bread I have ever had. Tasted like a croissant. Chicken salad with cumin aoli sandwich is amazing! If you are gluten free or not- this place rocks! Local great food!

    (5)
  • Karen W.

Great place for gluten free people! All of their sandwiches can be made gluten free. I had a GF cuban yesterday and it was delicious. Also a great place to hang out and do some work. I had no problem getting an outlet to plug in. I'm definitely going to be dropping by quite frequently for lunch/work sessions.

One of my coworkers stopped by Scratch to pick up five sandwiches for a group of us. We had a quick look at their website which lists seven different sandwiches, all of which have meat in them. We noticed the little note at the bottom of the menu stating that any sandwich can be made vegetarian by request. I didn't know how any of the meat-centric options would work without the meat, but I didn't have time to think about it and suggested my coworker ask for "the vegetarian one" for me. When he returned I was pleasantly surprised. He had brought me a vegetarian version of the Banh Mi (which normally has pork or beef, cilantro sauce, pickles, mayo). Instead of the meat, the sandwich was generously stuffed with hearty marinated mushrooms. They were excellent! The sandwich was flavorful and filling. I will ask for light mayonnaise next time, as today's sandwich was dripping with it... but otherwise, I'd say it was perfect. Also, everything from Scratch is locally grown/produced AND reasonably priced. I'm glad the Scratch truck parks itself in Wallingford!

Excellent sandwiches, great coffee, love the people. Delicious flavors, vegan/vegetarian substitutes, creative sandwiches, and definitely full-meal sized. So, so good. Whenever I go I spend the rest of the day raving it about it. That good.

Stopped by late afternoon for the chicken salad sandwich. It was SO good! The chicken came out of a big simmering pot and was paired with a freshly made aioli. This place is locally sourced with only the freshest ingredients and has a well-rounded sandwich menu. Absolutely delicious! Ian (the owner) is super friendly and clearly passionate about making great food. I can't wait to go back and try the pulled pork. Or maybe the BLT. Or any other sandwich. Great food truck concept that is well-executed and definitely worth a visit. Highly recommended!!!

DELICIOUS sandwiches. We stopped here this past Saturday after we were downtown. Great location and friendly staff. Loved the explosion of flavors

New menu! I tried their Shroomelette. Shroomelette = omelette (mushroom, sausage, onion, and maybe bell pepper? I don't remember) + cheese + sausage. It was very filling and delicious. I think hot sauce would go well with it. I wasn't too crazy about the texture of the sandwich. As a huge fan of Scratch's banh mi which has chewy, soft, and crunchy textures, the texture of Shroomelette was boring to me. Might not be a big deal to other people... But yeah... Therefore, one star off...

Scratch Deli. The place where I absolutely killed it with that Phillip K. Dick Joke. 5 stars.

A little taste of old Capitol Hill. Dog friendly, amazing sandwiches, and an atmosphere that gives you a break from the sterile, yuppy garbage (you know, all those cliche places with neutral colors and "vintage" metal furniture) that has overtaken the neighborhood. Their bacon and egg sandwich is my favorite, followed by the grilled cheese sandwich.

    (5)
  • Claudia P.

Had the chicken pesto sandwich that was delicious and greasy. And the mushroom sandwich, that was the same. The only thing is that the sandwich was a little small. It wasn't filling.

When I moved off the hill two years ago, this is one place I really miss. The food is always fresh and made from scratch. I make it a point to stop in when I am in the area, which is not often enough. I hope that the deli considers a delivery service like Caviar Seattle (local) soon so I can order goodies at home for lazy day weekends.

This place has cleaned up nicely since morphing from the People's Republic of Koffee. I like the grilled cheese and bacon/egg sandwiches. The cost is a big heavy for a cafe and you do have to wait a while for hand preparation, but the flavor combines with the soft texture to hit the spot. Whoever's working the counter is usually pretty cool. Coffee there is OK, and they also have a limited selection of beer and wine. I will say that the stereo music selection is depressing a bit too often, and it doesn't seem to matter which barista or cook is on the clock either. I'm not expecting EDM insanity or top 40 (in fact I'd rather not hear either at a place like this), but I don't want to feel like curling up into the fetal position while I'm waiting for my sandwich either. The cafe is also exposed well to exterior light, which is a bear during the summer when it's hot since there's no A/C. They also have open mics and comedy shows on the regular, which are hit and miss but typically inexpensive (like $5 cheap).

I had put off trying this place for a long time because there are plenty of sandwich options around. I ordered the cuban sandwich and a small spinach salad. both the sandwich and salad had very good flavor and seemed to be high quality. The sandwich would have been a little small for a meal so i'm glad i got the small salad as well.

  • Yvonne C.

Excellent. I ordered the Veggie Sandwich and was very happy. Many veggie sandwiches are mediocre to bad... soggy, blah, little flavor. Not here! The ingredients were very fresh and flavorful. The bread was delicious and toasted just right (no scratching off the roof of your mouth). The space was very clean and bright. It was so nice out, we enjoyed our lunches on the outdoor patio. My husband also loved that there are gluten free options. He and one of our friends actually went back in and ordered a second sandwich each. Altogether, our group tried seven different sandwiches and we all left quite happy. We are definitely coming back, and I look forward to trying the soups and sandwiches as well!

Decent sandwiches at low prices for cap hill. I probably should have gotten something other than the chicken banh mi. That teaches me to get it somewhere besides a Vietnamese sandwich shop. It tasted like chicken salad and the only "banh mi" thing about it was the daikon and carrots. My buddy's sandwich looked great though. Il supremo.

I haven't written a Yelp review in a while, but for the last three days all I've wanted to do is go back to Scratch Deli and get another bowl of their cauliflower soup. I think that calls for a 5-star review. I've also had their Cuban sandwich and their Bahn Mi--both were delicious. The Bahn Mi is a bit different style than the typical Vietnamese style, but I liked the spin that Scratch Deli put on this sandwich. Their usual soup is broccoli, but the day I was there they had made cauliflower instead. Rich and creamy but light at the same time--I can't wait to go back for more. I hope the cauliflower continues to stay in rotation.

Sandwiches are not my thang, but sometimes you just get a craving and it needs to be filled. Scratch Deli hit the spot. I ordered the chicken bacon ranch sandwich upon the staff suggestion. Not what I was expecting - if I didn't know any better, I'd have thought I ordered a chicken salad sandwich. But nope, it was my CBR. They creatively tossed most of the ingredients and meticulously rolled it onto my lil' spinach leaves seated on perfectly toasted bread. If only the bacon were a tad more prominent. This place puts Subway to shame (which is easy to do, I know). I'd much rather than a buck or two more for higher quality food. Cozy spot with that small business feel to it... winner for sure.

I stopped in to Scratch the other day after walking past it, oh, about 50 times. I'm glad I did. It's a cute place with great low-key ambiance and delicious food. I had a breakfast sandwich, which was great to fuel my day of studying. The coffee was also particularly good. The woman at the counter remarked on this as well, so I knew it wasn't just me. What I enjoyed most about the place was the overall vibe. Think of your friend who lives in Portland, and sitting in their living room listening to music, drinking coffee, and eating a sandwich. It's like that. Just... chill.

I've had the caprese, Cuban, and chicken pesto. All good, all at a fair price. Cuban sammich was the best of the 3. Nice place too.

  • Rachel C.

The food is great! And as the name implies, everything is from scratch. I love how eclectic the place is abc everyone's friendly. Their hours tend to be weird in the summer. And they look like they are open but are actually having private parties. Awkward.

  • Roxanne W.

Cool place, good food. The sandwiches weren't a ton of bread which I really like. might've been a little bit more than I wanted to spend though.

Just a heads up that they don't have Dutch crunch anymore. The only place in Seattle I've found who did and I head over specifically because of that but, nope. So disappointing. Guess I have to wait until I'm back in California. :( Seattle, up your bread game!!

My partner and I came here for lunch today based on the good reviews on yelp. When we walked in, there was only one customer at the counter/register. I was trying to find a menu or menu board but saw nothing. When the customer finished, we asked the guy at the counter for a menu and he tapped his finger on a few of them in front of the register. He was really obnoxious. He looked really angry and seemed pissed that we were there. My partner is on a food plan so he ordered a kale Caesar salad and told the guy that he needed 8 oz of meat with the salad. he said (in a very snotty manner) that their meat- added salads came with 8 0z. of meat. I ordered a Cuban sandwich. The place was pretty empty and it was very hot and stuffy, no air circulation. There was also very loud, pounding repetitive music that was extremely irritating. We got some table water and it was warm... ick. After a few minutes he came to our table and said that the salad only came with 4oz of meat so he had to charge more. ok, we paid the extra bucks. The salad came out; kale, with a mound of hot pulled pork on it. it really was pretty gross, my partner hated it. My Cuban sandwich was ok but nothing special. never coming back here, so uncomfortable and unwelcoming.

Just discovered Scratch Deli thanks to Yelp and I loved it. The Chicken Pesto sandwich that I ordered was fantastic. The chicken was juicy and the pesto had the perfect amount of nuttiness to it, plus the bread was really good too. The place isn't very large but the service was fast and the pricing was right in line with expectations. It might have just been tonight but the place was really quiet and most of the other patrons had lap tops out and were working like it was a coffee shop. I thought it was kind of cool that they let people just hang out there but maybe they don't do that when they're busier, I'm not sure. It's probably the best sandwich I've found on Cap Hill.

    (5)
  • Lily H.

Not a whole lot but delicious. I think I'd come here again for the funky Portland (or Seattle of the seventies) atmosphere + south Capitol Hill location+ outdoor seating. It's also quiet in the mornings. That is, before it falls to the wrecking ball, as all these older houses and apartment buildings in the Pike-Pine Corridor and along 12th Avenue seem to be doing, in the name of "progress" (= developers' greed). Service was a little slow (I came right at opening at 10:30) with several people who had come after me served before me. A mix-up in the kitchen, but to wait 20 minutes to eat an egg + bacon sandwich ($8 with tax) in 5-10 minutes seemed a little strange.

This place is awful. Went here for an open mic night with a few friends, hoping to meet some new people and try out a new place. This was the most unfriendly, judgmental environment I've ever stepped in to. Everyone here knew each other, and there was this kid in a beanie in the audience who clearly comes every week making fun of the new performers. He said he "hated" my friend based on his appearance and spoke rude remarks about us as he got up to play. He also said we should all "go to the new yuppie restaurant next door and burn it down." The whole thing was embarrassing--I was embarrassed for us, the owners, and this kid and his friends. To the owners of this bar--you should step in and make newcomers feel welcome.

    (1)
  • Sarah P.

Listen: Scratch is the best open mic you will ever experience. Everyone there knows each other because they all met there! Come on time and get an amazing sandwich (the caprese is my new favorite!) and you will understand why this placed is so well loved. The owner is an incredible person who cares so much the community he is building. I love this place more than any other spot in Capitol Hill.

Great BLT! Pleasant people and mellow atmosphere. We got a Bahn Mi sandwich for the plane tomorrow.

    (5)
  • Jeff M.

Delicious! They make lots of their sandwiches vegetarian / vegan as well, so that's a great plus. My only gripe is their weird seating layout. The decor and ambience is very much "the 1890's are alive in portland" which is fantastic.

  • Dan S.

*Hot damn! What a great sando! *Legit deli, I had the chicken salad sando and it was really tasty, a fuzz on the dry side but that's being pretty nitpicky *Great out door patio and picnic table area and they have beer

    (4)
  • Michael H.

Food is great...get the Banh Mi inspired 'wich. But service was a let down. Basic interactions (at a slow time at that) were navigated with unprovoked contempt. Look out for the balding guy with glasses, he already hates you for even being in the restaurant. Update 6 months later: Guy is still here and is getting weirder

  • Libby W.

The il supremo sandwich is amaze. It's not huge, but I don't need a huge sandwich. I'd rather my money go to delicious, fresh ingredients than a giant crap sandwich. I'm probably going to want the same thing next time I go, but will force myself to sample other offerings - the whole menu sounds so good!

    (5)
  • Lauren T.

First time and it was great. I had the buffalo blue chicken sandwich which was very tasty. I went after lunch so, I'm not sure how busy they are during the rush. Great outdoor picnic seating. The staff is nice enough and the value is good. Will return!

Tasty sandwich with quality ingredients at a pretty good price (about 8 bucks for my chicken pesto). Versatile menu from top to bottom, from Cubans to grilled cheese to BBQ. Friendly dude at the front desk walked me through the menu to help me decide. Artistic vibe makes it an intriguing spot that I'll definitely be coming back to!

I went here once and loved it! It is a small little place (a house turned restaurant) with a smaller menu but there is still plenty to choose from, they also have beer and wine. We got the Green Eggs & Ham Sandwich (Pesto eggs with cheese and bacon/pancetta) and the Cuban Sandwich. They are both served on a delicious roll/bun (scratch made) and very tasty. The egg sandwich was HUGE, it can be shared. The bacon chunks are also large and in charge, nice smoky flavor and a little bit crisp. All in all, amazing breakfast sammie. The Cuban was even better. The pork inside could have been a meal alone, it was very juicy and just finger lickin good. The toppings are also homemade (pickles, peppers) which just added to the flavor profile. I loved this place. I will be back!

  • Julie F.

Just a little shout-out for this spot. Sweetheart and I arrived on Cap Hill early for a movie and found this sweet little deli away from the throngs. They cheerfully made us dinner despite the fact we showed up about 2 minutes before closing. We ate a yummy sandwich (mine) and salad (his) on the front porch and were happy. I loved the cool plants along the sidewalk and on the patio. If I lived on Cap Hill, I'd be here weekly or more often.

Locally owned this place is a dog friendly restaurant with tons of character. There is vegan and gluten free options available. As the name implies - Sandwiches made from scratch, and double gold star for sourcing from local companies. I've had the veggie breakfast - more gold stars for having a breakfast sandy served all day. It has the warmth of the eggs, with the Beechers melting in it...Mmmmm. Love the digs inside this place, board games if you want to hang out for awhile, hydroponic garden in the inside, plenty of seating on the outside.

  • Johnnie L.

Not the biggest sandwiches but big in flavor! Buffalo blue... delicious! A lil blue cheese, bacon, lots of chicken and a spicy cheesy kick! Just the right amount of everything. I didn't feel overly stuffed or hungry. It was the perfect amount of food. The setting in an old house with all types of seating. It reminded me of my college years when we had a hodge podge of all types of furniture. I like it though. It has a cool chill vibe. I can't wait to try out what else theybhave on the menu.

Such a cute little deli! The bread the sandwich comes on is delicious in itself. I tried a newer addition to the menu which was the breakfast sandwich - hands down one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. We will definitely be coming back for more!

Flavorful sammies, and you can get gluten free bread, which is awesome. I enjoy getting a bite here when I just can't figure out a lunch plan. Quick and easy. Two things: I wish they had a few other sides on their menu, and the spot could be a tad more interesting; it might entice me to stay and eat.

Mmm Scratch Deli. I may have dreams about your sandwiches tonight... I got the Chicken Salad sandwich, which was a generous amount of shredded chicken with red onions and spinach presented nicely on a soft baguette. It was a hearty serving for me, but some Yelpers may view the portions to be smaller than the sandwich typical sandwich joint (i.e. Jimmy John's, Subway, Paseo, etc.) But fear not, quality is definitely not compromised here! The service was great and helpful. If you are a sandwich lover, then Scratch Deli is where it's at!!

I've seen signs advertising this deli all over the neighborhood and my curiosity has been piqued for weeks. The name is also very appealing as it conveys homemade and handmade. This little deli is inside a cute, airy house on 12th decorated with eclectic and vintage furniture and seems like a great space to hang out in. We got our sandwiches to eat outside on the patio since it was a nice day. Both our sandwiches were chocked full of meat and were very filling. The price is great because half a sandwich was more than enough for a meal. My banh mi was not very authentic, it had pulled pork, pickled carrots and cucumbers, green lettuce, and a cilantro sauce that I could barely taste. It was decently good but nothing to write home about. My friend also thought her sandwich was just okay. I wouldn't be opposed to coming back to try the other sandwiches, but I'd be most tempted to come back just for coffee, the atmosphere, and the friendly people who work here.

I thought everything was fantastic. Good beers on tap. Wasn't crowded. Every bite was delicious. I had the basic BLT, wife had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. Very reasonably priced and friendly service. They have some outside tables too. I thought it was one of the best sandwiches I had in a long time. Well done. This kind of place in Portland would have a line out the door.

The chicken salad was great! The grilled cheese was amazing. Drop the extra $2.50 for the homemade tea. It's well worth it.

I was very impressed by Scratch Deli. I love the unassuming vibe of the place from the get-go, as it is situated in a former home. Steps that lead up to the entrance and an inviting patio set the stage for the community, home-like feel you get from Scratch Deli. The decor inside is an eclectic mix of non-matching tables and chairs, which I feel really added to the charm of the place. However, the interior is hardly crowded, which I thought provided an inviting atmosphere. Speaking of inviting, I love the menu. I have visited delicious sandwich shops that use high quality ingredients and bread, but I am always intimidated by their sometimes gargantuan menus. At Scratch, I counted maybe 9-10 sandwiches that informs me that their menu is more narrowly focused and seasonal. Call me crazy, but being confronted by 30 different sandwich types is daunting, so I appreciated having LESS choices. My friends and I ordered the Buffalo Chicken, Chicken Pesto, and Barbeque sandwiches. We accompanied them with some draft beers, since it was happy hour and the prices we paid for the beer should constitute robbery. The sandwiches appear tiny when they arrive, but they are stuffed with delicious meat and savory flavors. At first bite, I fell in love with the barbeque and buffalo chicken, and thought the pesto was okay. The spiced buffalo chicken combined with blue cheese was exceptional, while the pulled pork and killer sauce of the barbeque was hard to put down. The pesto didn't win me over... at first. However, each subsequent bite got better and better. What I thought was the weakest sandwich just seemed to enhance it's flavor over time like a fine wine. I had to be "that guy" and ask how the pesto was made. Answer? Hazelnut pesto. I knew pesto could be made with items other than pine nuts, but good lord the hazelnut variety was out of this world. I will dream of that sandwich until the end of time. Oh yes, and the dutch crunch bread was really great. Crispy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. I have to imagine that bread is baked in-house, but regardless, it's damn good bread. In the unconventional side of things, I really wanted to try some local Seattle coffee, so I indulged in a post-sandwich cup of hot coffee. Scratch didn't roast those beans, but it was delicious, which is a testament to the Scratch Deli team sourcing the most flavorful ingredients and foods possible. Flavorful sandwiches and an inviting restaurant will hopefully contribute to Scratch Deli achieving great success, so they can start shipping their hazelnut pesto directly to my doorstep.

The Scratch Deli is located in a converted house on one of the major commercial streets in Capitol Hill. The interior of the deli is laid out in a comfy & funky coffee shop way. The tables are spread widely apart allowing for privacy & there is also outdoor seating. They have a wide selection of beers. So, you don't have to eat & can just drop by for a brew. I ordered a Laguanitas Ale on draft, because it reminded me of home, and a pulled pork bahn mi. The beer was good & the sandwich was ok. The sandwich was served hot and was tasty but the pulled pork seemed a little tough to me. The prices, like most things in Seattle, seemed s little high but I think I got my money's worth. So, if you're looking for a place to drink a brew & want to get something to each w/o the pretentiousness of one of the "hipster" bars located a little farther up the street, the Scratch Deli is a good bet.

"I want my sandwich on an unmanageably chewy baguette!" is what no one said, ever. But Seattle sandwich shops seem to think otherwise - I'm looking at you: Other Coast and Baguette Box. Scratch Deli uses soft, just *slightly* chewy bread that has won me over. Their ingredients are fresh and of high quality. They even wrap and cut their sandwiches with care and precision. Really top notch.

Found Scratch after searching for lunch places on Capitol Hill. I am so glad I did! Went there with a couple friends. We each had the Banh Mi sandwich...delicious! The mint ice tea was so refreshing too. Seating my have been a bit weird, but the workers were great! Looking forward to our next visit!

Great Cap Hill Spot. Staff was friendly and the sandwiches are great. I order the Bufalo chicken and while it was good I would not order again but my brother had the BBQ pork and it was AMAZING. Def coming back again.

This place was delicious. I haven't had a breakfast sandwich that good in a really long time. Fresh soft bread with a nice crust which somehow manages to maintain the massive amounts of yum stuffed inside. The egg is cooked, so it doesn't ooze out all over you, but it's really cheesy and ... dare I say it ... moist inside nevertheless. Plus the staff is really friendly. My only complaint: music is way too loud.

This place is wonderful. The food is good, but there is a ton of good food in Seattle. What makes this place great is the environment and the personnel. Perfect if you just want to escape into quiet public for a while.

Caprese sandwich = heavenly! And who doesn't love a place with a recycled bottle window garden? They use locally sourced ingredients and the atmosphere is subdued with great music and a lovely porch overlooking the street outside. Also, they have a sandwich called "green eggs and ham" (it has pesto). I was disappointed to find that the Shitake Cheesesteak that others had mentioned in their posts was not on the menu today, but the Caprese was fanastic. The reason for the one star deduction? Their vegetarian options aren't as abundant as I've come to expect in other places in Capitol Hill, I would have liked to see something more "novel" and vegetarian.

Pricy for the size but the food is fresh and good. Also, an interesting environment. Went in with a group of my friends and we took up half of the restaurant. So, I would recommend it for couples who are just looking for a quick bite.

Super cool place! I've lived on the hill for 2 years and must have walked by a dozen time. Top notch sandwiches, outdoor seating (which is all too hard to find up here), and a homely vibe. I'll be coming back soon.

As you walk by and look at this place from the outside it looks totally nondescript. It looks like a house/converted deli which I believe it is. Very quaint vibe. You ascend the small flight of stairs and you walk into this former house/deli. The night I went there was a poetry jam. I thought that was pretty cool they hold local events. Vibe/decor - Quaint, cozy fitting for a small, neighborhood establishment like this. Food - They serve numerous sandwiches and so far I've only had the pork banh mi. I love pork banh mi's. These are some of my favorite sandwiches in LA and in general. This is a solid showing, 4 stars. Not big, a bit on the small side, but as I try to eat less and more like a regular person I think this could be a good thing for me. I'm looking forward to trying the rest of the sandwiches there. Service - I got my sandwich to go, but everyone there was friendly. One thing I appreciate is their pricing. It may look awkward to see $6.30something or $7.20something but with tax it all adds up to a nice round number. My pork banh mi was $8.00. I find that little touch convenient. Definitely recommend checking this place out. I'm looking forward to eating there next time and chilling outside in the front yard.

This place rocked! I wish I could give it 4.5 stars. It was really a great price and the sandwiches were really good. I would absolutely come back. Had the Cuban and it was not your typical Cuban. A little different spin in a traditional Cuban and I was really pleased with it. Scratch Deli, I will definitely be seeing you again. =)

This is a great go-to on a weekend when you don't want a crazy brunch. Great sandwiches (try the chicken pesto) and soup (definitely add their cheese to the brocolli soup)! I've really enjoyed this place each of the 3-4 times I've been. When the weather's nice, grab a picnic table outside and enjoy the weather, as well as the slimmest view of the Space Needle.

First, prepare yourself for people just hanging out and showing off their MacBook Airs--because this is one of those places. The decor felt a lot like hanging out in your Grandma's midcentury modern living room (a good thing for me). I split a buffalo chicken sandwich and a side of potato salad with Ben M. I have to disagree with our cashier that the potato salad is awesome. First, the potatoes were under cooked, and under seasoned. Second, the dressing had been put on the potatoes when they were too cold, so it did not absorb. Third, there was only one texture--just under cooked potatoes. Even the best truffle oil, with truffles sourced by the most truffle loving hogs in the world, could not redeem the sins committed with the potato salad. But they redeemed themselves with everything else. The sandwich was fantastic. The dutch crunch bread was fresh and the ingredients and the seasoning of the sandwich were in perfect proportion. Next time I'll try the famous Banh Mi. I also had an Americano and some bites from a fresh from the oven chocolate chip cookie. That dude can make some espresso and the cookie was a classic.

Character, solid customer service and tasty sandwiches rolled up into one place. Though their drip coffee wasn't ready yet, they took the time to make me a personal 'pour over' coffee and went in the back to find cinnamon for me! I ordered a green eggs and ham breakfast sandwich and it was out in under 10min and delicious! (I'm eating it as I write this review heh) Thanks Scratch Deli!

We were pleasantly surprised at this cute little deli. They have delicious sandwiches and the prices are great. I recommend the chicken pesto spinach sandwich, so good! We'll definitely be coming back here.

I scanned Seattle for an open mic that felt like home for years until I found this place (Thursdays 8-10). Welcoming, accepting atmosphere, incredibly tasty sandwiches. Acknowledgement can be a little slow when you first walk in, especially if there's a sports game on. They stop serving most of their food at 8 and sometimes a bit before, which has put a kink in my sustenance quests more than once. They stay open longer than that with a limited snack menu, but once you're craving a Scratch sandwich, a hummus plate is a poor substitute.

Their Buffalo Blue buffalo chicken sandwich is about as good as it's going to get in that category. First of all, it's not drowning in sauce, it's a present but subtle flavor. And it's packed full of chicken. Topped with just the right amount of diced bacon and surrounded by roll that keeps it all together, it's clear someone who loves sandwiches (and loves doing them right), created it. Plus if you eat there they have beer and a deck. Fantastic.

Any who knows me should not find it surprising that any restaurant with a quarter gumball machine has my attention and this coffee house/sandwich shoppe, is no exception. People come to Scratch to get a filling sandwich and this deli delivers. From the Bahn Mi, a new take on what is quickly becoming a budget standard, to the Cuban which has stolen my heart. If you think a well portioned sandwich isn't enough, throw in a side of potato salad to top it all off. Bam, you have a great meal. But the food is just the start of what Scratch is offering to customers, take the in-house flea market, which gathers there on occasion, or the musician space which lets you enjoy Olympia Roasting Company coffee from a plush chair while listening to the strumming of an indie artist. And the list goes on, from an in house collection of books to a regularly updated calender of events. Scratch Deli is not overly advertised and Capitol Hill sandwich lovers like it that way... keeps those who stick to the beaten path out and leaves a little exploring left for those who think they have seen everything Seattle has to offer. Did I mention that there are also baked goods often lining the counter? I haven't checked them out yet, but just thinking about it has me hungry.

It's a good tasting sandwich that I suspect was prepared in advance and simply re-heated after placing my order. Kind of a letdown in the soggy meat department.

Scratch has gluten-free bread for their sandwiches. So thankful for a gf bread option that's not Udi's.

I'm giving Scratch Deli a 4 for the vibe/ambiance and a 3.5 for my food experience. Would go back again and would recommend it to friends. Food: Scratch Deli has a wide variety of sandwich choices, from pulled pork to cuban to banh mi. I went with the banh mi, expecting a traditional banh mi with cilantro, a range of pickled vegetables, and jalepenos. My expectations were wrong. It is not your typical banh mi: the pork is shredded pulled pork, the bread is untoasted and soft, and there is no evidence of cilantro or spicy peppers. With that said, I did enjoy the sandwich. It was an above average "Americanized" reconstruction of the banh mi. The speed of service was impressive as well, as I had my sandwich within 5 minutes of ordering. Setting: Scratch Deli is a cool joint. A random collection of celebrity sketches adorn the walls (I distinctly remember a nice profile drawing of Ron Swanson), a bookcase is filled with readings from Zen and the Art of Motorcyle Maintenance to a 1985 version of America's Best Short Stories. The payment method allows for advanced options beyond typical payment, like Pay by Square through a "cash register" iPad or LevelUp phone scanning. There is bench seating outside and a scattered array of different seating options inside (lounge chairs, booths, stools). All in all, Scratch Deli is a good experience. I'd recommend giving it a shot on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Though if your looking for a true banh mi, stick with your favorite Vietnamese joint.

Got the chick vac ranch, and on the second visit in 2 days I got the cobb salad. Super delicious. Service is great, Ian is a cool guy. I really like this place, very affordable. They have some pretty cool art up on the walls and nice seating without cluttering the place.

I tried the "Buffalo Blue," a sandwich packed full of shredded chicken, blue cheese, and aioli. What sold me was the mention of Secret Aardvark Habanero hot sauce, which was a discovery upon moving to the NW, and remains unchallenged in my Favorite Hot Sauce competition. A really cool coffee shop vibe - Black Keys through the speakers, free wifi, lots of spread out tables - so, a nice place to get some work done while eating a delicious sandwich. I'll be back!

Omg, first time here after I saw a sign on the side of the road and read the reviews. I got the Banh Mi. It was so juicy. The sauce was very tasty. It was just good. It was huge and the bread was not super hard, like most Vietnamese places. I would love to go back and try other sandwiches. I sat outside and enjoyed the sunny weather (yeah, I know right!!!). Someone next to me was smoking, but whatevs. There is always indoor seating. They are a little pricey. I think my sandwich came out to be $9, but it was worth it. I ate half and was stuffed and ate the rest for dinner. Yes. Try it!

LOVED this place. I don't know if they have a food cart too...but I refer to the deli inside of Republik. First of all the atmosphere here is killer. Looks like you are walking into a living room and sitting down to have a cup of coffee. Really liked the art and wished I would have bought one of the prints before leaving. I was thinking of coming back for it before leaving Seattle but completely forgot. Anyway. We had the Cuban sandwich. I would say that it is a delicious healthier version of the usual cuban sandwiches that I eat. And that is not a bad thing at all. Next time I'm in town I'll be hitting this place up for sure.

Great food, atmosphere and service in this funky deli! The chicken salad sandwich was simple, delicious and fresh - generous portion of filling and perfect baguette. My sister had the breakfast sandwich, also delicious and served hot. Loved the homey environment (in an old house with wood floors and oriental rugs), and our server was friendly, efficient and helpful. The bill for 2 sandwiches and a vanilla iced tea was $20 with tip, which is a little steep but worth it for what you get.

Casual as can be, this place is possibly staffed by the friendliest people on earth. There should be a 6th star for attitude for places like this. The menu is limited but excellent. I've had almost every sandwich on the menu and each time I consider whether it's the best sandwich I've ever had. Baked goods and fruit vary daily which lets me know they're fresh. I live nearby, and even with so many good restaurants and coffee shops around, it's hard not to eat here every day. My only complaint is that they don't serve food late into the evening. I would have eaten an 8pm dinner there a dozen times in the last 3 months if I could have. Opening a sandwich/coffee shop on Capitol Hill has got to be tough with so much competition. I hope this place succeeds. If they don't it won't be for lack of great food and service.

This place is amazing! It's like a cross between an art gallery and living room with amazing sandwiches and homemade soda. I recommend the Cuban sandwich and the ginger vanilla soda. The owner's super cool as well. AND they have WIFI. I'll definitely be back!

I didn't even know this place was here, despite living right around the corner. We were strolling by and noticed Scratch, and decided to give it a try, which turned out to be a very fortunate start to 2014 for us. I had the chicken pesto sandwich, and while I can be considered a sucker for chicken pesto in general, this one was particularly good. I'm really excited that I have a new spot to get food from nearby, as I couldn't cook a decent meal if my life depended on it.

It's nice to add twists to traditional recipes but sometimes when you deviate so far from the original, the item becomes so different that it really deserves its own name. The Bahn Mi was like that for me...it had pulled pork (which is unusual) and the pickled vegetables were sightly off (where are the radishes). The trick is really not to change the essential character of a particular item and this sandwich went pretty far.The cilantro paste is nice although it can argue that fresh cilantro gives Bahn Mi its essential character. The taste decent but the sandwich is really Bahn Mi-inspired and should get a name of its own. The sandwich is a little expensive ($8) although the ingredients are definitely fresh. I will come back to try the other sandwiches at some point.

Simply Devine is all that I could say. Sandwich heaven on earth. Real talk my husband and I were visiting from Texas and we lucked up on this cute and quaint shop. The service was great and the prices are second to none for what you get in a sandwich. It was a full on party in my mouth!!!!!! And the vegan cookies............. Smashed them! Awesome! Oh yes, I had the chicken salad sandwich and my hubby had the blue cheese chicken.

This place impressed me so much! Delicious foods including vegan cream of broccoli soup WITH bacon & gluten free options for every menu item. Me & my nerdy dietary restrictions were very pleased. The atmosphere is also super cozy & I would totally go there to do work or have tea.

If you are gluten-free and have missed sandwiches as I much as I have.....JUST AWESOME!! Makes me want to move to Seattle. I had the Buffalo Chicken sandwich on a trip in October and I'm still thinking about it. My husband and I are going back in July and I can't wait.

Saw an article in Thrillist and decided to give Scratch a try on Easter Sunday with my friend from out of town. Both had the pulled pork and agreed it was pretty phenomenal. Very healthy serving of lean pork and BBQ sauce was spot on. The owner said it was his first week and was happy to give him some business. Located in the Wine World parking lot, you'd have to be looking for the truck to see it. Go check it out! I'll definitely be back to try some of the other options.
