Last night we went to Red Star Taco Bar for the first time which is surprising because I live directly up the street! We had a great experience and will definitely be back. The atmosphere and new decor is very comfortable and clean. There are three huge murals on the wall with the red star theme that I loved. We sat at the bar, but they now have large dark-wood booths and three community long tables that really open the space up and allows for a good crowd. The lighting fixtures and onyx candles were beautiful, and the bartender said they brought them back directly from Mexico. The selection of tequilas was satisfactory. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have a margarita list yet, but they said it was coming. They did have a frozen margarita machine though. Prices were very reasonable, with unlimited chips and salsa for $1. We had a fish taco and some sort of Short Rib Taco-Queso which was basically a taco with the short rib meat melted into oaxaca cheese. The short rib taco-queso (I might be spelling that wrong) was delicious, and I'd definitely go back. Overall, the experience was wonderful, and it'll definitely be a new late-night spot for us!

AMAZING!!! Friendly staff, incredible food, adorable decor, wonderful neighborhood. I have taken plenty of people here and every friend feels the same way. I go out of my way to visit! LOVE!!!

Really good menu and you can order according to your appetite. Tacos are awesome and inexpensive. Would love to see Dos XX Amber on tap, also open and serving food late. Super friendly staff!

We went here on a Thursday after a run around Greenlake. The place is great because it is so simple. Simple decor, simple menu. You can get a bowl of chips and dip for $1 with free refills! And the chips come warm and fresh from the oven. The menus basically consists of tacos and a quesadilla-ish option. Overall I thought the food was great and the service was excellent. I returned here on a Friday night, busier but still great. Service was a little slow and unorganized but it was much busier. Kylie was our server both nights that I was there and she is fantastic!! Always checking on the table, waters and chips were always full. Overall-2 awesome experiences!

The deck is nice enough. The service is barely adequate and the food is, bluntly, unacceptable even at happy hour prices. One of party declared, "Dirty water!" when faced with the "beans" and no one disagreed. The nachos were greasy and even the $1 "mom" tacos really weren't worth it.

This place is delicious! Bartenders have been kind, vibe has been friendly and fun. I can't judge on authenticity, but all of their veg-friendly food I have tried so far has been delicious (and my omnivorous friends have also really enjoyed their meals, too). Great to watch a game or catch happy hour. I'll keep attending!

This place was...meh. They did a great job on the decor and the ambience was lovely. The menu, after a quick glance seemed somewhat promising. The service was a bit slow and unorganized. It seemed like we were served by a few different people and the server didnt really check on us. They will probably get this figured out very soon though. The food was the worst part, well except for the chips and salsa, which was very tasty. The chips were warm and had the perfect amount of salt. The salsa was cold and had was a bit spicy. I ordered some asada tacos and was disappointed. First, they were kind of small for the price. Second, the meat was room temperature and not very flavorful. Unlike the salsa, the pico de gallo had no spicyness. They do get credit for the house made corn tortillas, but these were not good enough to compensate for the quality of the meat. If I wanted tacos, I would probably not go back, but I will be back for the chips and salsa.

I went here yesterday after having an emotional day, and was delighted. The service was wonderful; I had a blonde waitress with glasses and blue clogs; she was lovely! My glass was never empty, she could tell us about all the different items on the menu. When we had finished a drink she asked if we wanted another or if we wanted to try something else; I love suggestions! I ate the tequila lime chicken taco with chips, salsa and guacamole and was very pleased. The chicken was really tender, the salsa was robust and spicy, the guacamole was fresh and delicious. I was pleased with how reasonable the prices were, especially considering the area. Everything in Freemont seems to be trendy and spendy, where as Red Star feels more like the new classic place. I love the wall mura, the scones; everything is so pretty and has a sort of vacation-y feel. The atmosphere was great, I'll probably try and close the restaurant down for my engagement party someday! It's such a perfect, big space!

This place has some of the best damn tacos Ive ever had, I have been there a few times now and have tried 3 different meat options. The Carne Asada (My favorite hands down) is so good, the meat is cooked perfectly and very flavorful. The Short rib is also amazing, and the Chorizo. I am normally not a huge Chorizo fan but a friend told me I had to try it. Wow it was Delicious, $5 does seem a little pricy for a taco but if you get 2 and an order of chips and salsa your spending $11 and your gonna be full. They pack a lot of meat onto the tacos. $11 is average or below the price of a meal anywhere else in the neighborhood

Just went and had the BEST guacamole then also tequila lime tacos EVER!! Service with a smile, clean place and great music---this is THE next up-and-coming place not just in Fremont but in the Seattle area!

super cool new place. definitely an upgrade from the white rabbit... loved the atmosphere and the staff was kicking butt. the draft selection is pretty generic which shouldn't be the case in a seattle spot, but the drinks were solid so maybe they want you to order those. get the chorizo tacos, good drunk food and not too greasy

This place rocks, now some might say its over priced and not authentic enough. But lets face it, this is Seattle, not texas, cali or mexico so finding something authentic is about impossible unless your dating a mexican girl who can cook like her mama or you get lucky enough to meet her mama and have her cook for you. Now with that said I love this place, its totally gringo and while the prices are a little higher then compared to a taco truck AKA roach coach they still are not that bad, especially during happy hour. And if your really on a budget just go ahead and get the 1$ your mamas taco during happy hour and a bucket of cornitas and your solid. They have a few twist on the tacos too like the short rib tacos which I think are marinated in kalbi bbq. I tried one and wasnt a fan but my friend swears by them. Give me the asada tacos and of course your mamas tacos and a couple of the gringas, I like the chorizo and asada ones, those are pretty smashing dang it. Never had anything like them anywhere else! And this place has a slushie machine that they make margaritas in and if you not careful you could end up with a serious brain freeze because they are pretty damn good so you end up drinking them fast, and I dont even like margaritas lol. If theres anything about this place I dont like it would be that the chips and salsa have a charge. That always annoys me at any mexican spot but like we said in the start of this review, it is a $gringo$ owned spot lol... I have been in a few times and most the time the service is swift friendly and great, but I went in on a busy evening recently and the service was very very slow. Not because the workers were slow but from what I could tell they were just under staffed. In the end the owners the staff the food the drinks and the atmosphere are all pretty awesome. Great early and late night happy hours and hell where else can you get a kalbi short rib taco and a gringa in seattle :-)

This place does the trick - delicious tacos, plenty of options, and blended margaritas for only $5. Certainly beats the competition in the area. Good spot, too with a nice assortment of seating options -- indoor/outdoor, bar, table, booth, etc. The service was prompt and helpful. I hope this place keeps things tight and well-executed. Went back a week after my first time and their two large tables were reserved, leaving little other space which I hope doesn't happen too often...

Fresh and homemade everything. This place is great! My mouth is watering just thinking about the next time I'm going to go. Plus the atmosphere is really nice. Great for groups. Awesome service. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Red Star opened tonight, and I'm pleased to say that I have a new hangout in south Fremont. The drinks are poured strong, the food was VERY tasty, and the bartenders are both attentive and friendly. Come in and grab a drink, I guarantee you'll have a good time!

Descriptive phrase: hip taco club. Wandering through Fremont, Red Star Taco Bar looked like a cool hangout to grab some drinks and some noms. While out friends ordered food, we stuck with just beverages. I have to say any Hispanic-theme restaurant that doesn't serve free chips and salsa is a bust in my book ($2). We ordered a Cucumber Margarita ($8) and Mango Margarita Slushie ($6). Both were good, but not revolutionary. If anything they were a bit overpriced. Our friends seemed to like their tacos. Red Star Taco Bar will draw you in with its hip, chic vibe, but the prices weren't worth it for me for pretty standard Mexican-fusion.

Wow this place is disappointingly mediocre. We were all very excited when we walked in to a crowded restaurant with low-lighting & loud music. That's pretty much where it ended. Our table of 5 waited over an hour of food while other tables around continued to get served. The fish tacos were almost inedible - SO salty. We went with a BBQ chef who didn't finish his food (found it flavorless) and 2 of our Mexican friends who gagged over their tamales. At $4 a taco I expect MUCH better. Also, the tortillas are advertised as homemade but are tasteless - like they came from a grocery store.

  • Stephen M.

I went there for happy hour expecting good things given the review but the tacos were extremely disappointing. No meat stale taco shells. I won't be back unless they fix the quality.

This is the best spot to be on a tuesday night as far as food goes. They have amazing tacos. And guess what. THEY'RE 2$ A POP!!!! This goes on my list of "best of seattle". Only reason it's not a 5 star is because they're normal menu is a little pricey.

    (4)
  • Caleb M.

I'm coming back here. I though the tacos were awesome. The nachos and the bean dip were good too. The place is best visited at happy hour. It has a great atmosphere. There are so many things to try you'll be coming back again and again.

Wow! The tacos slay here! Hit up the catfish and short ribs. Bomb. The folks serving this good stuff up are way cool as well. If your in Fremont, you have to stop in and grab some tacos.

    (5)
  • Leina K.

FROZEN MARGARITA. That's what's up! That is all anyone needs to tell me to get to go anywhere. On top of that, the tacos were amazing. I opted for the Korean style taco and out of the ordinary, Idaho taco which pretty much translated into a baked potato with some taco ingredients thrown on. It was bomb (does anyone say that anymore?). If I lived closer, it would be my new favorite spot. Too bad I am about 700 miles away :(

Very few places have great food, drinks and cocktails. You may have great food someplace but then crappy service, or horrible drinks with friendly staff. You get the point. Thankfully, you don't have to compromise food quality and service here. They do it all very well.

This restaurant has a huge emphasis on street tacos. They have the traditional ones that contain meat but they also have some intriguing vegetarian ones as well. They have sweet potato tacos which were not altogether bad for example. I realize full well that I may be nit picky on these tacos but I have been to enough taquerias and other Mexican restaurants that when you get different street tacos that make up the "meat" of the taco they often add toppings that are unique to that variety alone. To me that makes it more memorable. Here it seems like it was the same taco with very little variation on topping from the three different tacos I chose from. There were a few variations but nothing to spark anything too memorable. I also had rice and beans with my meal. Both were very good. The beans had a good spicy kick to them which is often times a concern with places that do this. The rice may taste fine but the beans can be a bit suspect but in this case not here. I wouldn't necessarily make this my "go to" place for tacos but they were solid enough despite focusing on those previous details.

My name is Steven R and i am owner of Done Right Plumbing in Shoreline. I did some work for this place and was blown away by how clean the kitchen and bar looked. Billy cooked me up some tacos after i finished my work and they where A mazing. See you soon.

Fantastic drinks! And you have to try the Taqui-Queso. And they have waitresses bring you small shooters of Tequila. Love Red Star.

Awesome slushie margaritas and average priced (yet very tasty!) tacos. Great place for happy hour. Atmosphere is a little "divey" but the staff has been both friendly and responsive in my multiple visits. Just watch that bar tab because those margaritas add up quick!

I'm really impressed! Vegetarian tacos were seriously awesome and the service was friendly. Salsa was great, margaritas were tasty, and the baseball game was on. What else could one ask for?

Red Star Taco is tied for the best restaurant I had on my trip to Seattle. I went to a light festival by the lake in Fremont. Afterwords my family and I were starving. My brother recommended we try Red Star Taco because he had been there previously and liked it. I ordered a sweet potato taco and a short rib taco. The sweet potato taco was good. The short rib taco was AMAZING. It was one of the best tacos I have ever eaten. I even ate it second so I can't blame its taste on me still being super hungry. The rest of my family also enjoyed their food. The staff was also very friendly. I wish Red Star was not 2000 miles away from my home so that I could go back some day.

Ask the owner to tell you the story of how they found the idea for the Tacqui Queso!! Really one of the best food and drink places in Seattle. Fantastic staff and prices too! And with all the flavorful protein choices, you could have the same taco each week with different protein (vegetarian options available) and it is a separate experience each time!

  • Christine P.

Overall I thought this was a great little taco place. I got the carne asada, shredded beef (favorite) & carnitas taco. They were well made with great presentation & flavors. I also got an outstanding drink called the Fremont mule, if you like that sweet ginger taste this is the drink for you. My friend got some sort of mango slushie margarita & that was awesome too! I took off 2 stars because 1) I didn't really enjoy the atmosphere. It was really dark inside & the patio wasn't anything special. And 2) the people working weren't as fun & energetic as I'd like a 5 start restaurant to be.

I was there the night you guys kicked out that girl for having an open container. She didn't have one, I know this because I was with the group she was with. It was two other guys that were at the front door at the same time and I saw the bouncer take them away. I also saw you guys harass and accuser her, and when a clearly over-served girl at your bar started harassing her you let the situation escalate until she was forced to defend herself. It was the most unprofessional and uncool thing I've ever seen. You owe that girl an apology as up until that point she's had nothing but great things to say about Red Star. Now we just hop a lyft to El Borracho and I suggest everyone else does the same. Maximum amount of negative stars!!!

As the designated driver, I ordered a soda water. I was quite taken aback when the bartender asked, "closed or keep it open?". I've never been charged for a soda water in my life at bar, let alone $3. What a joke. Will not return.

This place is the shit. Damian is wack. The tacos are perfect size and super delish. Chips and salsa always come out warm and cold, respectively. Anyone who thinks the tacos are small...probably has other "small" issues. The drinks are delish and the service is great.

I tried out happy hour here on a Taco Tuesday and good deals were to be had. $3 tacos were knocked down to $2 (chicken, steak, tofu, carnitas, chorizo) and there was the $1 "Mom" taco, by which I think they mean "Taco Bell taco" but can't infringe on the trademark - it's ground beef, cheese, lettuce in a hard taco shell. As for the quality of these tacos? They were OK - not fantastic, but tacos rarely are in Seattle. The major, major oversight was that there was no hot sauce anywhere. None on the tables, none offered to us. Hot sauce would have really helped these tacos, especially the Mom taco. Also discounted were the frozen margaritas which were great. Not weak or watered down, very smooth blend (they actually call them smoothies instead of blended). Sadly no salt, which I think is an integral part of a good margarita. Service was friendly, though they forgot a friend's taco order even though the restaurant was nearly empty.

Absolutely unacceptable service. The bartender tried to send us away when we ordered food, then it took 30+ minutes for my partner and I to get three taxis and a quesadilla. The quesadilla was two pieces and barely crisp. We only got our food after asking twice and the bartender was very rude and unapologetic. I've been here for happy hour many times but doubt I'll come back. Absolutely terrible service.

I ordered a habanero beer and it was not good. Our waitress quickly came around and saw that I wasn't enjoying it so she offered me something else at no charge. I went back the next day and she remembered our entire group's drink order. I don't know her name but she was a very friendly redhead :) I didn't have food but I would definitely go back based on the Tumner Pilsner recommendation and the great service.

Hmmmm. I happen to be at the same table as Damian. Only at the other end and A totatally different experience The staff was very accommodating The drink was a concern because I'm a Coke person but was pleasantly surprised with my rum and coke. The tacos were very good and filling. But I am not a big eater so maybe if your a Big eater you could be a little disappointed. All in all I was with family and had a great evening

How is it the "center of the universe" feels so shut down on late weeknights food-wise? doesn't seem so here! excellent food, good beers on tap, good vibe and friendly service. taco tuesday was just what I needed. so happy they are open and serving food til 1am!

5 stars for the food (at least the chorizo tacos), 2 stars for the two different servers I've had and 1 star for opening at 4PM on weekdays and for not being kid-friendly during the times they are open for lunch. I get that you're a bar and probably catering to the late-night crowd, but think of the possibilities if you would at least open for lunch. I mean, that's the meal I eat out for almost 65% of the time, and with your neighbor El Camino also being closed for lunch, you could own the Mexican food wars of midday Fremont. Anyhow, like I said, I really enjoyed the food both times I've been here, but the servers were 2's at best. The last one I had on 5/31 couldn't have acted more uninterested in any sort of small talk, recommendations or serving us, for that matter. Not good. I don't require a lot; but a smile and some general interest in how our meal is/was goes a long way. I will give Red Star another shot, and I hope to have a better experience. Peace.

Second time here, first time sober. And the food was just as good as I (sort of) remembered! The tamales on the app menu were very moist and full of flavor. My favorite taco was the Carne Asada taco on a corn tortilla. Each taco on the menu is paired with delicious, fresh-tasting ingredients and can be quite a feast, especially at happy hour. Three tacos and a tamale were more than enough for just me.

Did some searching and this place came up in regards to good Margaritas little did I know how good this place really was. From the salsa to the chips and yes the Margaritas everything was GREAT!! Their cheese dip is out of this world. I highly recommend this place for some great food.

The positive reviews of Red Star is basically proof that white people in Seattle simply don't understand what a good taco looks like, and how much it should cost. I'm not saying the tacos are shitty, because they aren't. The meat is good, and the tortilla tastes nice. However, anybody who is anybody on this earth knows that there should be two corn tortillas per taco. Most legitimate taquerias do it like this because it's obvious that they are better like that. I am not deducting points in-authenticity, because sometimes deviating from authentic can be tasty, interesting, or just plain better. BUT IF YOU'RE GOING TO USE ONLY ONE TORTILLA THE SHIT BETTER NOT FALL APART THE MOMENT THAT YOU PICK IT UP. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO EAT MY TACO WITH A GOD DAMN FORK AND KNIFE. AND IF I DO I BETTER NOT PAY 3+ DOLLARS FOR IT WHEN EL CAMION WILL SELL ME A BETTER TACO WITH 2 TORTILLAS FOR HALF THE PRICE. Still, 2 stars for generally tasty food, good drinks, and good service.

Updating my rating because every time I get back here the food is stellar. Keep doing what you are doing with your single tortilla!

I came here with my taco enthusiast boyfriend and unfortunately probably won't be back. It all comes down to the intersection of quality and value. I ordered two fish tacos and the bf had 3 carnitas tacos. The tacos were on the small side and for $4 a taco, the tortilla should be thick enough to not be shredding to pieces and falling apart the moment you pick it up, or maybe there should be two. The fish was dry and tasteless like it had been sitting under a heat lamp. Wasn't rubbery, so probably not, but heat lamp fish should not be my first though when eating a $4 crumbling taco. Maybe we'll come back for happy hour someday when we're hard up for tacos, but it's pretty unlikely.

I love Fremont. But trying to get to and from that hood via the bus system can be a little problematic at times so I'm never down there as often as I'd like to be. That said, I have found a reason to brave bus schedules or maybe just get my fat butt on a bike to make it to Fremont more often. Red Star Taco and their Taqui-Quesos. A taqui-queso is where you take Oaxacan cheese, fry it to the point of nearly being burnt (so super crisp and delicious), wrap it around your protein of choice, then serve it up on a corn tortilla piled high with lettuce, more cheese, and pico. These cheese shelled tacos are ~magical~, and while the rest of their menu was delicious (fresh house made chips and spicy salsa, tasty grilled quesadillas), we regretted not ordering anything else but these. Beyond that --the drinks are strong and served by a super friendly bartender. The space is great --large, open, semi industrial that you get a lot around Fremont. Oh! And even though it isn't posted on their menu, HH from 4-7! You'll see everything you order be $1-2 cheaper than the stated price on the menu. Red Star taco is a real big win in my book. And those Taqui-Quesos are going to become a frequent part of my diet.

The decor of this little taco bar is beautiful. Stars for that. The staff is always friendly and the food is tasty. I'm not usually a fish taco person but the sauce that goes on this guy is pretty amazing. Also the quesadilla was a crunchy little triangle of deliciousness. Last thought I brought a friend in for his birthday and got the whole bar to sing to him. Great atmosphere.

I have been to Red Star a handful of times and always had a great experience. The tacos are great (buffalo chicken taco?? Who knew it'd taste so good) and my last time there I tried the nachos, also fantastic. I recommend Red Star to all of my friends.

Finally tried this place after walking by countless times. The menu is quite expansive, with many great options all taco-related. I love what they did with the terribly limiting space, with great booth placement and decor. Good riddance, White Rabbit! As for the food, I was only a little disappointed. Everything sounds so good on the menu, but the flavors just didn't jump out. Admittedly, I only had the fish tacos, and the fish was cooked perfect, but the remaining ingredients were pretty much just texture. Given the prices, I wasn't blown away by that. Regardless, I think my expectations were a tad high, and I still think the food is worth the price. I'm excited to try some other items later. Not to mention the staff were killer. Friendly, fast, attentive but not intrusive, and to the point (Billy and the girl behind the bar). I wish I could just rate them, because they deserve 5 stars of their own. I'll be back!

Went to the grand opening of this place, mostly to see what it looked like inside now. The old white rabbit was here before and was pretty "gloomy and Sticky" This place is really pretty awesome! The lighting is dim which makes for a cool setting, the paint is fresh and hip. The stage area is now gone and additional seating is there. The layout is open. The tacos (chorizo!) are AMAZING. They did not have the full menu available on opening night so not sure how the other food is but I will be back to give it a try. Pricing was good!(especially for fremont) drinks were poured well and the service was excellent. I will be back, hope to see you there too :)

The first time I visited Red Star I knew this was going to be a long term relationship. Excellent ambiance, late night (and affordable) tacos, and the coolest, kindest staff has turned this bar into my favorite neighborhood haunt. Padriac is super knowledgeable about his tequila and has served me some of the best mezcal I've ever tried. And when all I want after working late is a pile of tacos, their late night happy hour can't be beat. Get a little devil (or five), experience the short ribs tacos, and make some friends. Thanks for being you, Red Star.

My wife and I have been to this place a couple times over the last several weeks and we think it's great. The food was good both times and while I tend to be more of a Margarita on the rocks type of person, this place knows what they're doing with frozen ones. I highly recommend the carne asada taciqueso, but think the restaurant is still figuring out their menu because both plating and included sides, e.g. guac, has been a tad inconsistent. If guacamole is a requirement in your diet, be sure to inquire when ordering to see if it comes standard with your dish or if you'll need to pony up a few extra bucks. If in the neighborhood and looking for a tasty Mexican place, I recommend stopping by.

I went here after work with a coworker and her wife, and I'm so glad I did...this place is UH-MAZING. The food is incredibly good; I particularly loved the gringas (basically a quesadilla) with carne asada. The Oaxaca cheese that they use is SO GOOD, chewy and cheesy and melty. I also had the Korean short rib taco, which was good but a little on the sweet side; the carnitas taco, which was fantastic; and we shared nachos with carne asada and more Oaxaca cheese. The drinks were also excellent. They make a great traditional margarita, but my favorite was the tequila Manhattan. I didn't really read the description so I'm not entirely sure what went in there. Tasty magic? It was just a tiny bit sweet, rich, and deep. Loved it. It went really well with the coconut flan, which I'm desperately craving right now. Service was really good, as well: our waitress was attentive, but not constantly asking us questions when our mouths were full. She also had that server-superpower of being able to tell from across the room if we needed something. I think the only downside is that it's a little dark inside if you're not next to a window, but they have a patio in the back and summer is coming, so not much of a con. Overall, I highly recommend this place! I know I'll be going back for more the next time I'm treating myself to a night out.

Red Star is like a spa treatment for the human soul. The tacos are flawless--- gorgeous to look at, well-balanced in flavors, and delicious. The Margarita Slushies, a favorite at the restaurant, are so tasty that both men and women will order them over beer. The restaurant itself is clean, chill, and makes you forget the outside world. Service is quick, management is super friendly. If in Fremont you MUST come here.

This place is so amazing. I wish I could give it 5 stars... but I decided to take 1 away because I went in one night CRAVING Dad's tacos, and ready to order at least 10.... when I was told they don't serve them at certain times! I forget what the reason was that she told me... but needless to say I was DEVASTATED. Good thing the other tacos I got in place of my amazing Dad's tacos were on point... but I really wish they would have Dad's tacos available 24/7. PLEASE MAKE THIS CHANGE. I would come in way too much for my own good to order these bad boys. Other than that- bomb.com tacos. Like- literally best tacos I have ever had in my life. YUMMM.

My favorite bar in Fremont! This place seriously has everything. Awesome bar staff, delicious tacos, good strong drinks for cheap, what more could you want? The feel of the place finds the perfect balance between cozy dive and hip neighborhood hangout and the wonderful people behind the bar make you feel like a regular even on your first time in. There are so many bars in Seattle, but this is the one I make it a point to visit every time I'm in town! Much love, Red Star!!

The tacos are great! I could eat them for every meal. I've been a regular since they've opened and haven't been disappointed. The owners are kind and friendly- it's a great addition to the neighborhood. Keep doing you, Red Star! Thanks for the great times... Keep it up!

Some friends and I went there last night because we all love tacos and read the great reviews. I have definitely had better and for less money. Here is what I got: Korean short ribs taco and the pre-taco pepper queso dip. The short ribs taco was good but at the $5 cost for one small taco it seemed a bit less good after eating it. The queso was tasty too but they definitely need to give you more bread when they serve it. It's like an 8 oz bowl of cheese sauce and three 1.5 inch slices of baguette. If you don't ask for more bread, you will be eating the dip with your fork. (I did ask for some more slices and they kindly brought out three more. But still not enough for all the dip!) I am a clean freak and the thing that really got to me was all the laminated menus delivered to our table were covered in food crumbs or salsa, so not even having food yet, this put a damper on my experience. Let me finish with two good things. Our server was nice and there if we needed anything and the chips were hot with very tasty salsa! Knowing there are way better tacos in this city, ( Tacos El Asadero Bus in Rainier) we probably won't be back.

This will now officially be a spot for me--a destination from Pioneer Square. $2 tacos all night. Great slushy margaritas. Good service. Can't wait to go back.

The 2-star rating description of "Meh. I've experienced better" definitely sums up our experience at Red Star. Pepper queso dip: I have no idea where the bacon chunks were, but they were most definitely not in the queso. The serving size was small, the consistency was a bit gritty, and overall it was pretty flavorless. I love me some queso, and this did not hit the spot. Shredded beef taqu-queso: This was just...odd. The the meat was rolled up in burnt cheese. I mean, it was meat and cheese and we ate it, but it was definitely not melty cheese, it was burned. The tacos were flavorful and good, but, like another reviewer mentioned, they should be served with two corn tortillas. The bartender was nice, the draft beer was reliably good, but the food could use some work. Maybe it's solely meant for the post-bar crowd?

I am giving Red Star 3 stars because the food was good, but the service disappointing. I went earlier on Cinco De Mayo, which also happened to correspond with their Taco Tuesday. The entire reason we went there was for 2 dollar tacos, but when our bill arrived we were informed that the taco Tuesday deal was canceled because of Cinco de Mayo. This would have been an excellent thing to hear before me and my friend each ordered three tacos. There was no signage and the taco Tuesday menus were still on the table. At no point was it clear that this deal was not available. It is frustrating because I certainly would not have patronized them had I know about this fact, or at the very least would not have ordered tacos. I have been a waitress for a long time, so I am understanding of how difficult a holiday shift can be, but at the same time know that if I saw two people holding up the taco Tuesday menu while ordering tacos I would mention that the price would be double. It will be a while before I revisit Red Star, I am feeling a bit duped right now.

Best taco place I've been too since I've lived in Seattle! (2 years)

I generally steer clear of places charging $5 for a taco. You can get (M)excellent tacos at almost taco truck for about $2.50. But these were pretty amazing tacos coming in several inventive varieties. The drinks were great and the service fast and friendly. A side note on Christine P's comment: "the people working weren't as fun & energetic as I'd like a 5 start restaurant to be". It's a taco bar not Cirque du Soleil. Why would the staff be "fun and energetic". The staff was super friendly and efficient and stars should not be removed because they were not dancing around and swinging from the ceiling.

Not crowded Wednesday night. Ordered 2 tacos. Waited 25 minutes, no flavor. And tacos were cold. Won't be back here.

This review is coming from someone who has worked in the service/hospitality industry for over 13 years. I am in the business of treating guests with kindness and respect, so that they will come back again and again, and also tell their friends what a wonderful establishment my place of work is. I take pride in my work, and I treat every guest as I myself would like to be treated. I have repeat regulars who know me by name and request me as their server. The front staff at Red Star Taco does not follow these principles. I would like to know if the owner and staff of Red Star Taco realizes that there are literally hundreds of other places in Seattle where we could have gone to get food and beverages at that hour. Don't they want to make sure we pick Red Star again in the future? I have been in a dozen times or so. Each time I say, "never again!" What brings me back? The fabulous and affordable food and the great drink specials. What makes me want to run away, never come back, and tell all my friends to avoid this place? The terrible, incompetent and rude service. They must be scraping the bottom of the barrel when they hire servers and bartenders. I don't care how great or cheap your food and beverages are if your service staff is failing. Typically it's just servers looking stunned and confused like they've never taken an order before, delivering food items 15 minutes apart from an 4 person order that was taken at the same time, waiting 30 minutes to scoop some chips and salsa (easy to do, what takes so long? why do I have to ask multiple times for chips? It should be immediate. In fact, the server should OFFER chips), and dropping off food with no silverware or napkins and hightailing it. But. Tonight I had a ridiculous experience at the bar that sealed the deal; I will never return. The bartender was a real piece of work. Didn't get his name, but it was a Wednesday night. He acted like we were seriously inconveniencing him from the get-go. I felt like I was being interrogated by a cop when he demanded what we'd be troubling him for this evening. There were 4 other people at his bar besides me and my friend, so not exactly a busy night. We had to ask for water 3 times before he would give it to us, and then made us feel bad for troubling him by saying he had to "fill a difficult order" before he could be bothered to pour a little H2O into a glass for us. He had to "climb a ladder" or something before he could give us a sip of water. Oddly enough he had no trouble making our cocktails or the cocktails of others, but water? Definitely a chore. Then when I finally begged him for it, he picked up a large glass first, then put it down and selected the tiniest glass, packed it with ice so there was very little room for water, and threw them down in front of us pugnaciously. Really?!! As a server, I won't let my guests go 30 seconds without a glass of water in front of them. I wanted to ask this guy, "do you even want to be here? do you take pride in your work? do you wish to make repeat customers? do you want us to leave?" I mean, the place was hardly full. A few tables and a smattering of people at the bar. I really don't need attitude when asking for water. I was parched! And that's just the tip of the iceberg. This guy had a real bug up his butt. He'd ask me what I'd like, then walk away from me while I was telling him. Huh? Doesn't make sense. I mean, I get it, bartenders are often hotshots, this concept is not foreign to me, but I'd gladly go up the street where I don't get a heaping helping of attitude at every turn and the bartenders go out of their way to make sure I have a nice time, instead of going out of his way to make sure I feel terrible about being there. He pretty much shooed us out the door too by snagging our drinks and my glass of water when we weren't even done, just because we said we didn't need change on our tab. I'll never be back. And you better bet I'm gonna tell my friends. I rarely leave yelp reviews; in fact I curse yelp more than praise or use it. But tonight was one of those rare occasions.

Since returned and had much much better and attentive service. Also tried the potato taquitos and they are much tastier than their description. Still wouldn't get the tofu but happy to know there is something I like with no meat.

Great find! Wandered in at 2 pm on a Saturday, and the place was completely empty. Ordered chips & salsa, chopped salad, and an order of 3 of the chicken tacos to split with the hubby. All were great, service was prompt, and the sangria was delicious. Would definitely return, especially for happy hour which it looks like has great deals!

  • Katherine M.

I would probably stick to these tacos just for happy hour. While they were tasty, I think they were overpriced for what you get. If a taco is 4$ each it should be amazing. That said, the vibe here is nice, service a tad slow, but I imagine it could be fun to try for a quick happy hour. Of the three I tried, the blackened fish taco was the best. Carnitas a close second.

First experience there tonight for Taco Tuesday. Not disappointed! Another reviewer stated the tacos are street tacos and very small - I felt this NOT to be the case. I can put tacos away and 3 totally did me in. 2 would have been much better. Love that they have veggie options for me with tofu tacos and sweet potato black bean tacos. A $2 taco on Tuesday is a great deal! I'm a huge fan of HOT salsa, and while they were out of habanero salsa, the bartender (?owner) put it upon himself to chop up a serrano in the kitchen and throw it in my salsa to make it hotter. Now that's service! Slushie margs were tasty but skimpy on alcohol. It comes from a machine, so I understand. They also didn't charge for my side of sliced jalapeños which was a huge plus. Thumbs up.

This place is legit. Taco Tuesday is something to look forward to! Stopped by tonight with my boyfriend and we had the chips/salsa, carnitas taco, buffalo chicken taco and sweet potato/black bean taco. Washed it all down with a Fremont IPA and pomegranate margarita slushie. It was all delicious! The staff is super nice and friendly and the atmosphere in there is great. Will come back again and again.

Our new go-to place for dinner since moving to Fremont! I love the variety of taco options - have yet to have one I didn't love! Their taquitos are pretty great too. Most week nights are pretty chill with the exception of Taco Tuesday which can get pretty busy! Bartenders are pleasant. They also have a couple decent sized booths/table so you could bring a good sized group here too.

Good tacos! $2 for simple tacos during happy hour and they are good. They have slushy margaritas and they are delicious. $4 during happy hour. Can't taste much booze though. Service was slow and the server didn't check on us much and the tacos took quite a while to come out. I would definitely come back again as the food was really good!

Great place for a frozen margarita on a hot day. Decent tacos priced reasonable for size. Could use Open windows or ceiling fans to move the air.

The infamous White Rabbit has been replaced by the much cleaner, more inviting Red Star Taco bar. A change for the better. Red Star is the perfect place to enjoy some happy hour on a nice deck during the summer. In the winter there is plenty of seating on the inside where your feet no longer stick to the floor if you are stationary! The service isn't five star worthy but it certainly is on par with a small taco bar. The Gringas "tacos" were delicious especially with the short rib! The standard taco with the Korean Short Rib (kalbi) was also really good. Their homemade flour tortillas were very fluffy and still the proper amount of chewy. Their chorizo was overcooked, but had good salty flavor. The Taqui-Queso is an interesting idea. A slightly soft Frico of Oaxaca Cheese is wrapped around the meat and then served on a corn tortilla. The cheese frico really just gets too chewy and the slightly burnt flavor of it overpowers everything, avoid them. The slushie margaritas are actually pretty delicious. While there is a decent amount of sugar in them they aren't cloyingly sweet and manage to retain good flavor balance. I enjoyed both the mango and strawberry versions. Not a bad place once you know what to order. I will be back to try their killer happy hour bargains!

I would like to clarify further about my interaction with Red Star Taco's owners. I had been drinking prior to arriving to Red Star. I, personally, DID NOT have an open container or any alcohol on me when I arrived at Red Star. NOR did I leave the prior establishment (Add-A-Ball) with an open container. If anyone in my party had an open container, it was not of my knowledge, and those individuals did not come into the bar. I requested food and only food when I went in and wanted to clarify why I was being refused service due to the misunderstanding from outside. Again, I had no alcohol on me or before entering. Padraic refused to give his number, but Billy supplied me with his when I wouldn't leave without a number to the manager or owner. Further, the customer I "threatened" had been harassing me when I was attempting to speak to the owners. That customer was rude and drunk as well and did not receive the same treatment I had. I am very familiar with the "right to refuse service," but you were misinformed Padriac and took gossip from another bar as truth when I was not a part of it. I am appalled by your defamation.

We went here on a Thursday just before midnight for a couple drinks and snacks. Slushy margaritas were tasty, the salsa for the warm & fresh chips was DELICIOUS, and our server was great! Yes, they charge a few bucks for chips and housemade salsa. I don't know why people think they're owed free things at a restaurant. Overall first short visit was great. I'll be kicking myself out of Capitol Hill to come here again!

Love this place. Catfish tacos are delish. Had a British colleague with me on Margarita Monday ($5 margs!) saying "I don't like catfish" - until he tasted it at red star The servers are great. The location is convenient. To the reviewer who compared these to street tacos...you are out of your mind. Free chips at Aztecas any day. This isn't that

I'd really like to give this place 4 stars for the quality of the food however, our overall experience warrants 1-2 stars. Let's start with the positives... *--simple menu, reasonable prices for tacos, outdoor seating **Food! -- I ordered the carnitas taco which was chunky, moist, savory, ubber tender pork that was lightly topped with verde sauce and packed a very spicy kick. If you love spicy, try this!! My friend hates spicy food and couldn't tolerate this taco. The chicken lime taco was good but didn't steal my heart like the carnitas. It was bland in comparison, but it's light and perfect for summer. My friend enjoyed the beef taco and said she would order it again. ***Drinks---it was happy hour, which is why we decided to try this spot. Margaritas were advertised as $5 so we ordered mango flavored ones. They were absolutely delicious!!! Packed a punch and perfectly blended. Be warned, these are pretty sweet!! ---BAD stuff **Jenna was our waitress who seemed slightly indifferent from the moment we met her. We assumed it was because she was having a rough day with the massive crowds during the time of the World Cup game. We didn't mind as much since our food (once it finally arrived) was great! She took forever to bring us food, check on us, bring more drinks, water ect. Another waiter/guy came out and saw both our table and another were looking impatient and irritated. We ended up asking him for the check. Jenna finallllly arrived with our check, and I noticed we were charged $1 extra per drink for mango flavoring. No where on the menu does it mention flavors cost an additional charge. Even the outdoor happy hour sign is advertised as "blended margaritas $5" ----When we mentioned to Jenna we weren't aware of the additional charge her response was, "oh". My friend and I were beyond disgusted at this point since we both eat, live, breath customer service. Her response was unacceptable!!! Even if we were wrong, her response should have been an apology and then explaining where the accurate pricing is listed. We won't return thanks to Jenna.

A great place to grab a late night bite; the kitchen is open really late. It sounds weird to say, but the chips were really good...better tasting than the average Mexican food restaurant's chips.

Yep! So happy we can here on taco Tuesday! Almost all tacos are $2 and frozen margaritas start at $4. Those are particularly delicious and come in many colors, ahem, flavors! During happy hour they have $5 nachos. The food was delicious! Staff was courteous, and it also has very large booths, making this a great place for groups and friends. Also love the location, incredibly easy to get to and from!

Not only are tacos about my favorite food in the whole world, but this place has a lot of taco and taco-related options, and everything is amazing and flavorful. It's a down-to-earth, local hangout with great prices and good service, and I think I could literally eat there every night. There's a gluten-free option for nearly everything, and they have cider on tap. I've had nachos and almost every flavor of taco on the menu and would order them all again (and probably will)! The quesadillas are heavenly. Avoid the crowds if you can by going early, and on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Otherwise, relax and enjoy yourself! Now if they'd only open for lunch!!!

That happy hour tho! Highly recommend the "dad's taco" which is a double decker like you've never had one. One of the best tacos I've had in a long time, and cheap during happy hour and tuesdays! (2.50 per taco). Also had their cucumber and roasted pineapple margaritas, both were perfectly strong without being overpowering. Service was really friendly and they were quick with getting food out. We'll definitely be back!

Ugh, normally it's an alright place. Everything we had last night was burnt to a crisp. They forgot the rice and beans but they probably would have somehow been charred to hell as well. Asked for a beer that never made it. Ok whatever, off night maybe. Then, split check comes back with one card. Glance around the place, spot my card on the ground. Yeah, probably not going back for a while unless it's at the bar for drinks and it's empty. Oh and also, if you're in the area looking for a taco Tuesday, both LTD and The Dock do it far better, which is a little odd.

Came here on taco tuesday and had....tacos! They were great! Tasty and loved how They had the option of flour tortilla or corn. I tried the chorizo and carnita tacos. They were both good but the chorizo was better. Service was awesome! Our waitress was very chill and nice and split the check for us all even though we all just got a couple cheap tacos each. They raised the prices a tad but it's still good for the quality and exotic variety.

Red Star Taco Bar hit the spot for us at the right time. We had spent the afternoon at Schilling Cider, and found ourselves roaming about looking for something tasty. Happy Hour was either over or disappointing everywhere we went. Taco Tuesday to the rescue! We each ordered a few tacos, which are available with several different insides -- beef, pork, chicken, chorizo -- and everyone was happy with their choices. I was a little disappointed by the menu outside Taco Tuesday (seemed a bit overpriced to me), but next time I'm in Freemont on a Tuesday, I'll be revisiting Red Star.

Since writing my previous review, Red Star has become the hang out for me and all my coworkers after work. It's great to just snuggle up to the bar, get their two tacos with rice and beans for $10.50 (or opt for their three tacos for $8 from the $3 taco options, or three tacos for $11 from the $4 taco options), sip a slushie margarita or house sangria, and watch tv - either yelling at the Mariners for sucking so terribly or laughing at Portlandia or Archer or whatever television show they're playing (Padraic and his staff have excellent taste in television shows). Other than their delicious taco options (the catfish are definitely my favorite, once I get over the fact that a catfish is a ground feeder, but the other tacos are seriously to die for. The sweet potato and the chorizo are my runners up for favorites), their gorditas are a good choice, or the taquitos- which are advertised as "pre-taco" but can easily be a meal themselves. The nachos are also a good way to go, especially if you and a friend have a big appetite. A coworker and I demolished a plate of nachos with picadillo. Whatever you do, make sure you order chips and salsa or pico. Both are fantastic choices, and quite affordable. That isn't to say that the guac isn't good, because the guac is awesome. Their salsa however is the perfect mix of spice and veggies. Everyone that I've met who works there is so nice and kind and thoughtful, and you can't go wrong sitting at the bar, seriously. They're busy, but they'll take care of you. I'm glad that people are starting to find out about Red Star, they're a gem.

Three friends and I came here for dinner and drinks last night, and we all expected great things based on other people's experiences here. The evening started out strong, with drinks and an appetizer. Margarita Monday is a great deal, with all the stiff house margaritas available for $5. I had the roasted pineapple margarita, and it was quite delicious. We also ordered chips with guac and salsa ($5 if you get it during happy hour). I wish there were more chips, or that the chips were bottomless. The guac and salsa were on point, and I was pretty pleased with those. Then we ordered our tacos, and things went downhill from there. I got the sriracha honey shrimp taco and catfish taco with rice and beans. My tacos contained mere specks of meat, and their corn tortillas were hard and cold. My rice was also cold. My friends tried some of the other taco options (adobo pork, carnitas, Korean short rib, chicken, and rockfish), and everyone had a similarly disappointing experience with dry meat in tiny quantities. We were really quite disappointed with all the different tacos. I'd come back here for drinks if I was in Fremont, but I will not be back for dinner.

Only been in once before for the Troll Stroll and during that event pretty much every bar has terrible service because there are SO many people you will have a hard time moving through the crowd. Since I had never eaten here before, I asked how big the tacos were and was told they were a little bigger than a "street taco" like you'd find up the block at the taco truck. Since I was told they were bigger than a street taco, I'd be okay with paying twice the price and I decided to try my luck with the Tequila Lime Chicken tacos. We also ordered some more chips and salsa for $2. Seriously. They charge you for chips and salsa. It's not included with a meal, you're paying for it. This was my first red flag that my "bigger than street tacos" we're actually going to be street tacos and that I may as well have been at a picnic table up the street by the taco truck. After the server finished gathering everyone's order it took her about six minutes to come back with my $2 chips and a little cup of salsa. I don't know about anyone else, but that just seems like an inordinate amount of time to put chips in a bowl and scoop salsa. She also brought the same thing to the table next to us; I fear how long they waited for those. This theme continued throughout the evening. After we all sat there staring at the kitchen door for about nine minutes wondering where our food was it finally showed up around the 14 minute mark. We all ordered tacos. HOW HARD IS THAT?! In total there were ~20 tacos. Even the truck up the street would have had me out of there in no more than eight minutes, so how is it that a full kitchen with support staff has trouble. When our meals did finally arrive, there was quite a gap in between everyone's food, maybe a minute or two. Oh, and you all remember a few lines back when I said that the server told me the tacos were bigger than a street taco, well guess what. These tacos are not bigger than a street taco. They are the exact same size! Maybe she goes somewhere that sells novelty size tacos. Once I was done with my shock of how small these things "large" tacos were, the server came back and told ME that the kitchen missed two orders on the ticket. Why would you tell me this?! I have my small tacos already, go tell the people who's orders were missed that they are on the way and it should just be a moment. Being the person I am, I opted to wait for the other meals to appear before I began eating. I waited a while. Again, it's a TACO! Heat tortilla, scoop meat, apply toppings. Unless they are making it WAY more complicated than it needs to be. Well, now that we finally have our tacos, my girlfriend commented that they felt cold. What. A. Shocker. I picked mine up to investigate and they were barely warm. Kind of like they put them onto a cold plate and made no effort to keep them warm. *insert un-shocked expression* By the time that our last two orders came out, it was another server, finally! They are helping each other out! I turn my head to talk to the person to my left and WHY IS THERE A TACO IN MY FACE?! This lady REACHED across the table to hand someone their food. The recipient was ON A CORNER! She could have just as easily walked around to the other side of the table and served appropriately but hey, that's too much to as at this place. I also can help but notice that someone who looks like the manager, maybe the owner, is out having drinks with customers. Okay, cool. He's schmoozing, that's good. Maybe he cares about how his business is run. The next time I see him, he's behind the bar! Now maybe the laws have changed, but when I was a bartender, you were NOT supposed to be under the influence while working in food service. But, it does explain why this place is so terrible.

One of the more chill places in Fremont. I like the atmosphere here, (dark but relaxed, unpretentious vibe, good music), however the food is just so so. 3 tacos for $11. Been here several times and felt the meat was dry and prepared earlier. No sides, pay for chips and salsa/guac/pico. So you're looking at spending $20-$25 after tax and tip for a bare bones tacos, chips and a beer meal that's not as good as the taco truck down the street, yet twice the price. I will say the service is friendly, bartender was cool and the drinks are good. My friends love this place, so I'll be back, but I'd rather eat tacos elsewhere.

I love the sweet potato taco- ridiculously good and excellent to have a vegetarian taco option thats not just beans but has some serious personality. I'm often there for happy hour (margs here are delish) but drinking into the late night is great here as well. I usually come on the weeknights for a chill atmosphere, but it definitely picks up on the weekend. Super good salsa- never skip on ordering chips and salsa!

I've had the hardest time finding a good taco Tuesday in Seattle. Red Star had some pretty reasonable deals with their $2 tacos. Not the best taco Tuesday I've ever been to but pretty good for Seattle.

Great local place for tacos! They had a lot of local beers on draft to pair nicely with their tacos. The service was okay and the outdoor patio was perfect for a warm summers night. My favorite are the Carnitas for $4, they were so tasty...the homemade tortillas was a sweet bonus, too.

We sort of happened into this place right before happy hour.... totally incidental. Our party of four got there around 8:45 and didn't know 9pm was happy hour. Needless to say, many drinks, tacos, and chips and salsa later, we all really enjoyed this place. It was a little slow in terms of atmosphere when we first got there, and by 9:30 it was rocking. The gal at our table was very friendly and attentive. The tacos were really, really good. Street taco in size, but for the price, that's what you expect. The taste was definitely there across the board, from the shrimp tacos to the breakfast tacos, the more traditional tacos. Salsa was quite flavorful and equally spicy (recommended for anybody who likes a spice-hot salsa). Some regional and local microbrews on tap were all good, and the iced and frozen margaritas were super good, too. Absolutely look forward to coming back next time I'm in Seattle.
