OMG, Ethan has outdone himself this time! We sat in the bar area, which I think is the best option if you like a somewhat quieter experience. We started with a trio of appetizers: the Foie Gras, the Pate and the Pork Rillette. We love mustard so had to get a little extra to have enough for all of our bites. The Foie was my favorite, followed by the Pâté de Campagne. We then ordered the Boneless RibEye to share, along with the Béarnaise sauce. I know Béarnaise, and that stuff is Legit! We also got a side of the Roasted Brussels Sprouts. Pretty good, but a little too much going on with it for my palate. Our server was personable, knowledgeable and just attentive enough. We tried a couple of the cocktails, and they were wonderful. We enjoyed getting to catch up with Ethan a little, and it's clear that he loves his own menu. We can't wait to go back and try the Frisée & Bacon Salad and also the Burger. This is a Winner!

I had the pleasure of eating at Red Cow and it was great. They have 4 different steaks: flat iron, ny strip, filet mignon and a rib eye. They also have chicken, fish, a pork chop and mussels. They have lots of great looking starters including steak tartare, oysters, charchuterie, and marrow bones. The have my favorite salad (frisee with bacon and a poached egg) as well as lots of yummie sides including brussels sprouts, lentils and cabbage. I had the burger with beechers cheese, bacon and onions. It was delicious! I also had the brussels sprouts with bacon the can in a cute little cast iron dish and also were great. I cant wait to go back to try the frisee salad and a steak! Great addition to Madrona.

Unreal. You'd be a fool not to eat here. The staff heartily recommends the Hanger Steak Frites (the lowest price "steak frites" on the menu) and so they should. It's to die for. The chicken liver pate (entree) is better than the stuff you find in Paris. Also tried the Green Salad with haricot vert and the kale with bacon (side). Had wine (evidently) which was recommended by multiple staff people that was * less* expensive than the glass pour I was going for.... I'll be back - obviously- to order the rest of the menu (our server said that she once ordered the burger and regretted sharing it with her husband (!!!) ) and to enjoy the rest of what Red Cow has to offer.

Great service and good food. The fries were amazing. The wine recommendations were spot on.

we went here for our anniversary dinner the other night and had outstanding service by Amy. she is an awesome server, very professional, etc. she suggested a cut of steak i never had before, the Culotte, and it was really good. my wife had the filet and she was happy. this place is a winner...great vibe, easy to get a table mid week, great food and plenty of places to park. we will come back for the gnochhi and chicken next time, but the steak was really great. and fantastic service from Amy sealed the deal--this place cares and they offer a great experience for anyone who comes through their doors. i was very impressed. having only been to Rhione XX, i am excited to find another great place to eat. i heard great things about the burger so i will have to come back and try it, too. great job, Amy & Co!

As part of an inaugural Madrona visit, I visited the Red Cow at Happy Hour (5-6 pm on a Sunday) for an early dinner. Beers on draft were $3 (a local pilsner and Fremont's Interurban IPA). FYI these were schooner-sized, not pints. I split the daily charcuterie (lamb terrine) with a friend. It was a slice about 3 inches by 4 inches and half an inch thick, served with pickled carrot and green bean, two mustards, and a few slices of crispy bread. I wish there were more bread, but the dish was tasty and a nice way to whet the appetite. ($5) Three of us then got the steak brochettes with frites (basically a steak-frites, but with the meat on a skewer), which was very tasty. The fries were very good and served with a fantastic aioli. The steak was wonderfully cooked - slight char on the exterior and medium-rare/medium on the interior, plus quite tender for hanger steak. At worst, the dish may have just been a bit too salty. ($10) The bar area consisted of 3 four tops and 8-10 seats at the bar itself. The rest of the restaurant likely had a capacity of 30. The ambiance was quite nice. Not too loud, not too dark. I could see this as a great place for a date, or for a classy happy hour with the guys (as it was for me this time).

We live in the neighborhood, so figured we'd have to give it a try - and I'm sorry we waited so long. The steak-frites was fabulous - good meat (I got the hanger steak variant), good sauce (I got the red wine reduction), superior fries. Our simple salad was tasty and not over-dressed. The scallops cooked to perfection and lentils were tasty and done just right. The profiteroles were home made with home-made ice cream. Absolutely delicious. The service was excellent - the staff was friendly, not overly intrusive but very attentive. It's a little loud (surprisingly for such a small venue), but we'll definitely be going back. We loved it. Despite being pricey, we'll be regulars.

Closer to 5 than 3 stars, but a solid 4. You're going to have a great meal here. And the service we had was excellent as well. The space is really nicely appointed and classy without being a stuffy traditional "old-school" steak house. The one issue I have with the space is that it is VERY loud and hard to have a conversation, even with only a few other people in the restaurant. I would recommend the management keep the music(which was good) at a quieter level to help with this, but it's just a naturally loud room. We had the Halibut Brandade to start, which was excellent. We both started with beers, and I later had an outstandingly well-made Manhattan. We got Haricot Vert as a side with our steaks which were perfectly cooked and seasoned. I had the Wagyu Ribeye and my wife had the Coulotte steak. They were both very good, however, if I did a blind taste i would have picked the Coulotte over the Wagyu despite the latter costing ~2.5x more. The (medium) rare case of not getting what you paid for. Obviously, personal preference applies, but for a difference that extreme in price I'd expect a demonstrably superior product. The sauces and fries that came with the steaks were excellent as well and added a nice touch to the meal. tl;dr You should eat here, it's tasty.

fun atmosphere, easy menu tons of great options for cocktails, wine and food. favorites: cocktail: aviation, the charcuterie and frites/aioli this will not be the best steak you have ever had in Seattle, but I didn't assume it would be. good thing is...we all had perfectly cooked steak. tips: make a reservations it is very loud ask to try each sauce for the steak frites, they were all awesome

I came here for a friend's birthday dinner and had a wonderful time. We ordered a slew of appetizers including marrow, lamb terrine, pork rilletes, and foie gras - all very good. I also managed to pack away most of a wagyu ribeye steak, which was pretty good, but not one of my favorite steaks. It was prepared well - I think maybe it's just not my favorite cut of meat (my first time eating wagyu). It had a lean taste to it even though it was clearly a well-marbled steak. I would maybe opt for a cheaper cut next time. Service was also impeccable. We had a few different waiters helping our table, but our primary waitress was great. She seemed genuinely happy to be waiting on us and was very attentive without intruding. All in all, a great experience. I would definitely come back here.

love love love! it's on the tiny side, so make sure you get your reservations in. it's kind of loud and bustle-y, but so was my group so it was fine by me. my husband took me here to celebrate my birthday with a group of friends and while we were able to fit the 8 of us together and it works, i wouldn't categorize it as the best restaurant for big groups. our waiter was very helpful, informative, and attentive without being over bearing. i got to taste a little bit of everyone's steak and they were all delicious with a huge serving of frites. the housemade charcuterie is so so so good with the foie and mousse being the favorites. save some of your foie to top off your steak and frites and i promise you, you will have an out of this world experience. the best part is, i think the prices are all extremely decent. it's not something you'd only allow yourself to splurge on for special occasions like john howie or the met, but any fun date night or out with your carnivorous girls will do.

Another Ethan Stowell gem! My husband and I have been slowly making our way through Ethan Stowell's restaurants and like the others we've been to, Red Cow gets two thumbs up. It's a smaller, more intimate space that has a small bar in back and an outdoor patio so definitely make a reservation if you decide to go. I got the mixed greens salad to start with. While tasty, it was a bit on the salty side, which is saying something since I love salty goodness! Following that, I got the salmon with summer succotash - the salmon was cooked perfectly and the succotash was so fresh and flavorful. My husband got the filet mignon with fries and while I didn't try any, he loved it. We will definitely be going back!

The best fries I've ever had. Crispy on the outside with creamy potato on the inside. Can it get any better?! Yes, it can. The garlicky aioli was great, but if you want to take it to the next level, dip your fry in the fluffy chicken liver mousse. The frisee and gem lettuce salads were also good. We sat on the charming patio until it started to rain and our friendly and knowledgeable waiter helped us move into the bar.

Super yumm. Gazpacho, beef tartare, beer salad and French connection cocktail. Definitely recommend all four. Also came in for the $5 dollar foie gras add on and it was delicious. Just very creamy and rich taste that paired well with my gazpacho. My friends got the steaks but to be honest I'm not an expert in that area but they seemed pretty good as well. The atmosphere overall for dinner is pretty relaxed, dinner after work to unwind with friends type of thing.

While 3 stars doesn't fit, I think 4 are too many based on tonight's meal. We started with the duck terrine and the pork rilettes. Both were quite good. My wife opted for the culottes steak, which was somewhat overlooked, although the bearnaise was excellent. My boneless rib eye was perfectly cooked, but surprisingly tough with considerable gristle. The frites were the highlight. Perfectly cooked and the accompanying aioli was great. The wine list had a good selection of french wines without breaking the bank. For dessert I had the mousse which was a bit lighter than I would have preferred. My wife had the peach sorbet, which was so creamy we thought it was more of an ice cream or gelato. I don't think we will make the trip from Ballard again, although the burgers looked inviting.

I'm disgusted, I really like the red cow, especially their beet salad. But today I was highly disappointed when i asked if I could simply have a beet salad to go, because I'm going back to LA for college, and they said they only give their burgers to go...that's highly confusing since it takes much longer to prepare a burger then a beet salad. I was a huge fan until now. Be less accommodating.

  • Aram C.

It was good. It's steak - of course it was good. But my ribeye was a little overdone, even though the waitress told me that they tend to go on the rarer side when medium rare is ordered (to which I said "awesome"). The salted cod appetizer was good - great flavor, not too salty. But my favorite was the frisee salad, which says a lot, because I will never pick salad as favorite. Serious, never. But that frisee salad was really good, definitely the best of the night.

Had an excellent birthday dinner here last night! Snuggled up to the bar for dinner with my love- everyone was very nice and well versed on the menu. I had a great French 75 and the man had a great glass of red. The smoked goat cheese was Amaze balls and the Foie gras was rich and smooth! I'm super classy... So I had the burger! Sooo good! Boyfriend had the filet and we loved that too! My only suggestion. ( not a complaint) is when you order med-rare it's much closer to rare than med, not a big deal for us but could be a problem for others.

After many a lovely happy hour, this evening was quite a let down. We had just rescued a stray dog and made it in by a minute past six. They were dismissive and nobody waited on us after several minutes. We got up and left. To be a neighborhood bastion, the staff need to be friendly and helpful. This isn't Manhattan and they haven't written the next great novel, so the staff need to get over themselves.

Just had dinner at Red Cow and was very disappointed. The service was great, but the steaks were not worth the hype. We ordered a NY Strip and the Rib Eye. What I didn't know was the steaks were Sous-Vide, so mine was gray in the middle when ordered med-rare. In fact the first steak was prepared med so they took it back. The final steak was the correct temperature, but was gray inside and didn't have the nice crust most steaks have. On the menu they never stated that the steaks were sous-vide. If I knew this I would not have ordered the steak. There is an art to cooking a nice juicy steak...it didn't happen tonight. On a positive note the room was nice, a little noisy, but the service and staff was wonderful.

Oh, Red Cow, where to begin. Upon arriving, the decor inside was very clean and simple, however, we opted to sit outside due to a rare Seattle heat wave. Back patio is a little odd (partial driveway with gravel, wooden picnic benches, underneath residential windows), and I was worried we'd be forgotten "out back". The bar is small, cute, and intimate, and I can't wait to return on a cooler day to sit inside. My only suggestion is that the restaurant dim the lighting for the main area - it seemed unusually bright, but really, a minor suggestion. Drinks: Normally a beer/wine girl, I was pleased with their tap and glass offerings, but did think the cocktails seemed pricey. A cocktail was ordered at our table, and I was so impressed! Not too sweet, not too strong, just right. I get the price point, well done. Food: Steak frites and burger were done exceptionally well, and considering the price point, the portions were generous and delicious. We were both incredibly full from our 2 entrees, and didn't even have any small plates to start! Because we were celebrating a birthday, dessert was mandatory, and the housemade peach sorbet really hit the spot. Service: Service was...impeccable. Our waitress was incredibly professional, but warm, that I would go back just to have service like that - a rarity in the Seattle dining scene! Every person that visited our table was just as courteous and polite, making us truly feel welcome. Overall: Can't wait to come back and share with others!

I need to give this place another shot. My food was great, if ... a little sparse. The braised shortrib was excellent, but I am an American. I eat bigger portions than that. It was paired with squash, which was OK, but it wasn't really filling. Again, American here. Luckily, my date ordered steak frites, so I could grind some of her fries, and that made it better. We also got a side of Brussels sprouts, and the sauce on them was divine. However, her food was way too pink/red to be medium rare, so we ended up getting another dish made. They were extremely polite about it, but she mentioned that was the second time she'd had undercooked food there. Which I find odd since it's supposed to be a higher class joint. The other downside was that we were seated near the front door, so we got a cold blast of air every time that a party came or went. That sucked. All in all, I definitely want to try it again. I think that 5 stars is out of the question, and the 4 stars was generous. I want to go back to see if they truly deserve all four stars. tl; dr - wasn't blown away, but will be back to try it again.

Based on the name we came specifically to get some great streak, based both on the name, and that it's an Ethan Stowell restaurant. Unfortunately we were extremely disappointed in the flavor of our dinners. The meat was cooked properly and of good quality but the braised short rib was utterly tasteless, and the ribeye with compound butter sauce had the entire kitchen sink dumped on top except the one thing that a streak truly needs, salt... We love the location & atmosphere, and the staff was very attentive and courteous, but without good food we'll pass on the return visit... Hopefully Ethan stops by for a taste test and reigns in the kitchen!

Went here on a Friday night with a 9:45pm reservation and were promptly seated. I had the Ribeye Steak Frites and my wife had the mussels. I also had a tequila cocktail off the drinks menu which I enjoyed. The meal was very good, I would come again. It wasn't a mind blowing experience but it was a solid 4 star place. The Ribeye was cooked well and was very juicy. I tried a variety of the sauces but ultimately kept coming back to the Béarnaise which was very well done. The Aioli with the fries was also very delicious, don't miss on these! I felt the prices were not too outrageous for Seattle. This is two back to back good experiences with Ethan's restaurants, first Bar Cotto and now Red Cow. He is redeeming himself after a dismal experience at Anchovies and Olives.

I told my friend I would take him out to the restaurant of his choice since I missed his birthday dinner. He chose Red Cow. We arrived a bit early and sat at the bar while we waited. The woman behind the bar was witty and we had fun bantering back and forth with her. Once seated we ordered a bottle of red wine and the beef tartare to start. The beef tartare was tasty and paired well with our wine selection. For my entree I had the NY strip. We also had a Kale side dish--I think this was a special not listed on the menu. The NY strip was cooked to perfection--no complaints from me. The kale was ok. So why only three stars? I think it is because I went in with high expectations and walked away thinking, that was good, but not out of this world. To a certain extent, I feel like I missed something. I plan on going back to Red Cow while a particularly carnivorous friend from Nebraska visits. Perhaps I will feel differently then.

I went there for dinner with friends. We enjoyed the atmosphere. They provided excellent customer service. Bone marrow was my favorite. I highly recommend also trying the beat salad They also provide great selection of wine. I would definitely come back next time I visit Seattle.

First visit here. It was empty mainly because it was kinda late. I enjoyed the atmosphere. The background music was awesome! I went to another French restaurant the day before. The bone marrow was terrible (super oily and burnt), this restaurant's bone marrow was awesome. I ordered a vesper but switched the Lilet for Americano? Yup. No drama either. Good place. I'd go again.

This restaurant is so good. The workers are kind. But quick tip get there around for 5th before it gets crowded. The prices are a bit pricey but you won't be disappointed.

We only stopped in to have dessert and wine at the bar but the chocolate mousse and the pastry with ice cream were to die for. And the bartender was very friendly and fun to talk to. Great little spot. Can't wait to come back for a full meal!

We gave this place a try twice and both times were a disappointment. The steaks and marrow were tasteless and under seasoned. The plus is that the service is decent.

  • Roberth K.

The location is a bit off, hidden on "the other side" of Seattle, with limited parking in the immediate area. The noise level inside is on the higher scale, the acoustics of the place is not the best and they should probably add some dampeners to the ceiling to make it a little more conversation friendly. The food though - really good! The stakes were cooked to perfection and the frites were amazing. Having sauce Bearnaise on the sauce-menu definitely helped as well... We tried the bone-in rib eye, which is only served for two or more, and it was delicious. Cooking meat on the bone gives it a fuller flavor and I wish more restaurants would do this. Our server was attentive but the night we were there they seemed a little understaffed as she missed a few details. Nothing big and not something that ended up being disastrous to our experience, but just enough to not push the experience up to top-notch. I will return for more of that beautifully cooked beef and savory frites.

Great service, beautiful atmosphere. It is a little on the louder side but not too bad. Food came out very quickly. I had the filet mignon and a side of braised Brussels sprouts. Awesome!

Madrona is a family oriented neighborhood, but the Red Cow, which for some reason unbeknownst, has a green door and a cold, metallic grey color scheme inside, does not feel neighborhoodish or even remotely like a bistro you'd find in France. The space it is in has suffered failures left and right. The previous incarnation, Restaurant Bea, took cozy to the other end of the spectrum, making it feel like you were walking into an old lady's tea party. Other incarnations have suffered various fates, though the food was sometimes good, but the vibe has always been misinterpreted by the restauranteurs. Tavolata is one of my top favorite restaurants in Seattle. I have eaten at ES's other restaurants and never found the same simple, delicious ode to a great cuisine. I was hoping The Red Cow would be another example of this simplicity. It was hotly anticipated by the hood, but so far the hood remains underwhelmed. It is not a French restaurant per se, but rather an Ethan Stowell restaurant, with French-ish food, and oddly overlarge silverware. The food was a solid B. The Frisee salad sums up the whole meal: All the right parts were there, speckled with some delicious bits, but the egg was barely poached and drenched the whole thing with unappetizing, cool goo. I have had many an exquisite frisee salad in my time. My intuition is that Ethan Stowell, (or his backers if he has backers), must at this point bear a certain burden of financial responsibility. And because of that he needs to hit a price point with his restaurants that is more about the rate of return then the absolute deliciousness of the food or the attention to details, or atmosphere. Perhaps with Noyer, the restaurant in the back that he's building, he will get to have some fun again. As for the frenchies in the hood, we will probably go back to Voila Bistro on Madison, with their attention to the little details, their tarnished yet sophisticated vibe, their horrible, (but very French), service which encourages one to linger, and their pretty good food.

The rating is perfect, as good as it gets. Congratulations Ethan, what a fantastic place. We live in the neighborhood and have eaten at some of the places that were in the spot. You have livened up the space and your staff is impeccable. Special shout out to Cameron. It's customer service at it's finest. Welcome! Coming back for more hanger and Grey Goose!

  • Bob M.

The food and service at Red Cow deserve five stars. We shared The roasted marrow bones, salad Lyonnaise (which they just call frisée salad), and hanger steak frites, all of which were truly exceptional. Every bit as good as the best Paris bistros. The service was attentive and friendly, but not cloying. Red Cow loses a star for its design, which sadly interferes with the dining experience. The place is all hard surfaces and, as a result, on nights when it's crowded as it was on our visit, the noise level is absolutely deafening. We had to strain to hear and scream to speak. Too bad. It diminished our enjoyment of a place where everything else was great.

I have never written a review before, actually this is my first one. To the best french fries that I have ever eaten in my life and I'm 48 years old that travel around the world for business for the last 20 years, and if you are in Seattle, this is a place you must come.

A friend recently recommended this new restaurant and we finally dined there last night and will absolutely be going back! Not only were we seated immediately (we did have a reservation) but it was so warm and cozy inside compared to the cold weather we have lately. I could write a really long review about all the details which impressed us as we dined but bottom line is everything was fantastic. The short rib with horseradish and squash was hands down the highlight of my night. I can't stop thinking about it, it was that DELICIOUS. Hostess, waitress & even Chef Thom who came to say hi to us were all so incredibly friendly. They served us a butternut squash soup which was the best I've ever had. I loved the long wine list and many app & entree dish options. Great location for a total gem of an establishment. Ethan Stowell clearly knows how to do it best. Thank you for the fabulous dining experience!

Absolutely great food and service every time. We've been there several times and tried most of the food- never had anything we didn't love. Great oysters, appetizers, drinks, ambiance and service. Very attentive and knowledgeable staff. Great find- easy to see why it's difficult to get in.

I have enjoyed every Ethan Stowell restaurant I've eaten at (been to 5 incl. this one) and Red Cow was up there as one of my favs so far! My hanger steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and I loved the sauces (got the red wine reduction sauce as well as the horseradish sauce). Great selection of French wines too. Many wines from Bordeaux with affordable options! Woohoo! I had one of their Black Manhattans which is from their specialty cocktail list. It was my favorite Manhattan I've had from a restaurant!

  • Tracy T.

Surprised the food quality was so poor given this is an Ethan Stowell restaurant. Everything we ordered was based off a suggestion given by our server (Tab). Salt cod was overwhelmingly salty and texturally too mushy. Smoked goat cheese appetizer tasted fishy and was missing an element to balance its flavor. The hangar steak (which we ordered "medium") was so tough and chewy it was practically in edible. They offer 4 different sauces. We tried all 4 with the steak and the fries and settled on ketchup! The Bernaise had way too much tarragon and the other 3 were so blah I can't even recall what they were. The salmon wasn't bad. All in all it was probably the best thing we ordered, but it wasn't a stand out. The fries were great, probably one of their best dishes, but c'mon how hard is it to screw up fried potatoes? Not sure if this was an off night for them or if this is how things usually taste here, but I won't be back. The quality doesn't justify the price.

Great food. Ordered salt cod and bone marrow for appetizer. Both were done very well. The code was great. We didn't like bone marrow's texture, but that's the texture of bone marrow. We were happy to try it finally. it seems to be a trend these days. The steak was great and Ratatouille was amazing! Love this place. Will be back again.

i really wanted to love this place and to say that i found a new steak place in this darn city that really doesn't know how to prepare and cook a great steak. (w/ the exception of j howie and jak's) For the price, 35-38$ , the portions are good. You get a decent size steak with a pile of fries and a choice of sauce. Ordered a new york and boneless ribeye. The meat was cooked well- nice crust on the outside and a little bit of char. however, the meat wasn't seasoned very well...it was sadly bland..maybe a dash of sea salt and some freshly cracked pepper at the very least. i suppose the sauce that comes with the steak is suppose to season it ,but the sauce (horseradish cream and bearnaise) was meh . a really great steak does not need the help of a sauce. it should shine by itself... On the other hand, the fries were great and the frisee bacon salad with red wine vinagrette was delish. took a peak at the happy hour menu (5pm-6pm) and the menu looked great. 10$ for a 6oz hanger w/ fries, steak tartar, mussles, charcuterie specials, 6$ cocktails (*thumbs up) . i may come back to try the happy hour but i think it'll take some convincing to get my bf to agree to give this place a 2nd try. The patio is comprised of 3 picnic tables outside next to their lot.. id suggest to come early if you want to snag a table outside on a nice sunny day.

Loved it! My husband and I had a blast sitting at the bar, trying the delicious cocktails, and chatting with the fantastic staff. Would love to see a future happy hour and/or brunch menu. Looking forward to visiting Red Cow often.

Not impressed. My steak had a fair amount of gristle that had not been trimmed away and while it was cooked perfectly, was tough. Service was not stellar, we were asked if we wanted a second drink only at the very end of our meal. Overall a 'meh' experience, won't be back.

Will definitely go back! This spot is just the thing that Madrona/Leschi needed. The scene was getting stale and I was looking forward to trying this place... it took a few months and a 9 o'clock reservation to make it happen but I loved: -the fantastic fresh atmosphere. Bright and airy in the front of the house and more intimate towards the back. Lively and loud everywhere but in a great way. -fantastic and friendly service from host to server to bartender. Actually I would put my server as a top 5 ever, all time - yes, in my entire life. Guess that is more props to her than Red Cow but they did have the smarts to hire her. -Food (because that is what you are reading for, right?). My ribeye was cooked a perfect medium rare with this phenomenal horseradish cream. My only complaint was there wasn't enough. I could have had a glass of that stuff. In fact my partner in crime got the béarnaise and that was smashing as well. The fries are my favorite kind, cooked to perfection. AND THE MUSHROOMS WITH EGG! OH HECK YES. I know it's a lot of food but ORDER IT! We also ordered the pate and chocolate mousse. Zero complaints. Only smiles. So thanks for bringing something nice to the Madrona table. See you again soon Red Cow!

Dined here on a recent Thurs night and was greeted nicely and seated immediately. The decor is similar to the prior restaurants that lived here but they have changed the bar configuration in the back since it was Cremant, June and Restaurant Bea. Our service was very attentive and warm with the host and two servers repeatedly visiting our table. We had the salted cod and roasted bone marrows to start. Both were served with perfectly toasted rounds. They have already mastered the bone marrow serving it hot with a reduced balsamic and little loss of the marrow itself. The frisee salad was excellent with a warm coddled egg as was the new york strip, perfectly seasoned and cooked with salty country style frites. We could not get too dessert, I should have not had lunch. I was a fan of Cremant & June and am a now a fan of Red Cow. They have a decent selection of wines by the glass but did not investigate the full list.

I really want to give it three stars due to the meal I ordered with a friend, however I feel that would be unfair as the rest of the food was good and fair priced. The appetizers were excellent. Upper scale tartare, the oysters were good with a great selection of toppings, and the pate was on happy hour was very satisfying. The entre. We got the two person bone-In ribeye that claimed to be two pounds, which I'm sure it was, but honestly the amount of easy to eat meat was probably closer to 10 ounces an difficult fatty meat closer to a pound. If we hadn't had so many appetizers, it wouldn't have come close to what it was advertised as. As a petite female I could have eaten the entire thing to myself easily. NOT worth $80 or even close to which is why there is a star lost, however it did have great flavor and would easily get a five star review without that option or if the option were to improve. In conclusion, excellent service, very attentive and accomodating, the food was very tasty, and we sat outside which was quaint and honestly I couldn't ask for more. I wish I had gotten anything other than the plate for two. It was also very clean which is important.

This place is fantastic. Everything we got was awesome. Everything our friends got was awesome. We let the server pair wine for us and he did an extraordinary job (not just complimentary, but the way that lights up the food and wine like fireworks). It was packed, but everything happened in a timely and non-rushing matter. I'm very impressed!

This was a great find! The food was very good and the service was good too! We showed up a little before closing and they were still happy to serve us. I think it is a little closer to a $$$ rating though.

We gave this new restaurant in Madrona a try on one of their very first nights open. Maybe the decor was still a work in progress in the attractive sleek restaurant, but the kitchen and staff were fully ready!! We felt welcome the moment we walked in the door and were served by a young man who made our evening a total delight. We tried a specialty, the hanger steak and fries. The meat arrived hot and cooked to order. The special sauces were outstanding. I hope they will offer some vegetarian choices and change the menu seasonally as this new reasonably priced restaurant is bound to be a neighborhood favorite for a long time.

Two words: Too loud. The food was great (moules frites, mushroom tart, beet salad). Cocktails were swell. Service lovely. But I was yelling and lip reading throughout the meal, even though it was just two of us at the table (6-7:30pm on a Thursday night.) I left with a headache, sore throat and ringing ears. Not planning to return.

We drove 30 min. to try this new Ethan Stowell restaurant and it was definitely worth the drive. There were 4 of us and we ended up sitting in the bar and it was great. We started with several of the house made charcuterie which were fantastic. The chicken liver moose was so silky smooth it was amazing as were the terrines and pate. Then we had fabulous mussels cooked perfectly and followed that with 3 different steaks and frites. The steaks were cooked perfectly med/rare. The red wine reduction sauce could have had more flavor. My husband said the fries were the best he's ever had. We all loved them. The aioli sauce served with the fries was great too (perfect consistency). We finished with the profiteroles which were great, I just wish they were crispier instead of soft. The staff couldn't have been nicer. You can tell the chef at this restaurant really knows what he's doing. My only wish is that Ethan opens another Red Cow in Ballard or Fremont so it's closer to us. We love the concept of the French brasserie. Of course that could be dangerous, we'd probably go there way to often! We now know not only does Ethan do Italian well he also does a great French brasserie! Congrats!

With every encounter, I become even more gaga over Ethan Stowell. Red Cow just easily became my favorite one so far, and I can imagine anything surpassing the delicious meal we had last night. As of last weekend, the bf is now the fiancé and the parents wanted to do something nice for us and treated us to dinner at the place of our choosing from afar (thanks fam!). Naturally, based on my love of Ethan Stowell, I selected Red Cow. And well, being from Chicago, we have a natural affinity for red meat. We went a little over the top, which allowed us to try a fantastic array of the delightful selections at the cow that I will now salivate over while I remember just how damn delicious they all were. We started with charcuterie, specifically the foie gras, lamb terrine, and chicken liver mousse, which also came with yummy pickled veg. Of course we had to get cocktails to start off our celebration right - I went with the Currant Affair, he went with the Black Manhattan. This was a fabulous preview, the charcuterie was luscious, my drink was bubbly, what more could a girl want? The answer: more meat. For dinner, I had the filet, medium rare, which was a little closer to medium, but damn was it good! The horseradish cream was just the right accompaniment. The had the strip with herb butter and ate the whole damn thing, so it must've been at least as good as mine. What he was most impressed with the fries, which were just the right amount of crispy and paired with garlic aioli, which I'm a sucker for. We also had the haricot verts, which we ate like fries and thoroughly enjoyed. We ordered a bottle of wine based solely on the name - Spellbinder - which went well with everything. Because we had already gone so over the top, we had to order dessert too. I had the profiteroles, which were basically little, wondrously delicious ice cream sandwiches. The bf had something creamy and full of hazelnuts, which I couldn't try because I'm cursed with an allergy. Jerk. All in all, we had a lovely time and ate some of the best food we'll probably eat for a long, long time. Thanks family! Sorry we went [a little bit] overboard! It was totally worth it.

I was really surprised that the temperature of the steak was off ...twice...first, my Medium Rare steak came in as Medium....almost well done. The waiter argued with me telling me that because the steak is Sous Vid it will Look different so even if it is pale pink, I am wrong and should enjoy it as it is and anything I ask the kitchen to do will be the same....beyond that it was chewy and not well seasoned. I sent it back - something I never do, and what came out was a steak that was blue...and cold. I took it home. It was not edible. On the plus side, the bone marrow was properly prepared and the wine was good. But even though the ambiance is nice, I will never eat there again. Charging $47 for a poorly done steak when you can get great steak at JAKS, the MET, DANIELS, and the MELROSE grill and others...why would I pay $47 for a sub par steak??? UPDATE:: As an update, I think it is fair to note that I called the Ethan Stowel restaurant chain the morning after to register my dissatisfaction and the person I dealt with took a personal interest in resolving my complaint. She narrowed down the time I was there, which table I was at and both who the waiter and who the chef was. She indicated that both would receive some feedback and training. As she noted, this is a small neighborhood restaurant. I appreciated her efforts to make amends on behalf of the restaurant.

Best burger and frites ever.... Until today 8/10/15... They changed their frites to be more "consistent" and it tastes like cardboard with salt all over it! So disappointing !!! Sorry, I need to take away 2 stars

Great drinks! We had the pomme shrub Great fries - and we are HUGE fries people. And these were perfect And last but not least the meat! Perfectly prepared. No complaints. We will be back. I had the Coulotte and my hubby had the filet - both medium rare. Service - awesome. Very attentive. Understood what we wanted in terms offered drinks. It was great.

Eating at an Ethan Stowell restaurant is like wearing my favorite pair of sweatpants; it's comforting and dependable. I'm a huge meat and potatoes kinda girl so I was excited to finally try Red Cow. We had reservations but bar seating was still available and they were having HH so they offered us a table in the back. We started off with the charcuterie which was served with slices of toasted baguette, mustard and pickled veggies. Simple and tasty. For dinner, we ordered the ribeye, (medium well) and frites, braised short rib, and since it was HH, an extra side of fries (for $4). Our food was great. My ribeye had a wonderful crust on the outside and remained tender on the inside (perfect amount of pink for me); I asked for the red wine sauce and it kept the meat really juicy. Maybe a little too lightly seasoned for me so it wasn't my favorite ribeye but it was definitely enjoyable. The short rib was fork tender and was a plateful of comfort. My favorite part of the entire meal were the fries. They were cut to a perfect size that allowed for a great crunchy exterior to fluffy interior ratio. I'd say these were some of the best fries I've had in a really long time. As with his other restaurants, Red Cow offered really good service and a fun vibe to hang out in. The tables around us were ordering the burger and bone marrow. I must come back for those.

Surprise birthday dinner for me!! It was perfect. Get the charcuterie. The portions (overall for the restaurant not just this) were generous and it was all made and presented well. The marrow bones were cooked perfect, but just came with toast and was missing an acid component to cut the fat. My steak, a Colette cut, was seared perfect. There was a nice crust and perfect medium rare inside. The horseradish sauce I chose was perfect. It was a great balance of heat and flavor. The frites were piled high and cooked perfect. Everyone else enjoyed their meals. A bit of the "snotty" service, but it was good overall.

Nice enough place for a quick bite to eat, we went with the hamburger but not the best range of beers on tap which was a bit of a shame. The place was quite empty when we visited for drinks and the staff didn't seem as focused on the customers as they could have been. If you are Madrona it's worth checking out but have to say there are better places to drink and eat in the area. We went across the road to the Bottlehouse and had quite a nice time.

We went here for my husband's birthday dinner and loved it. They have great meat selection. Unlike other ES restaurants this one is more distinct and has a french vibe to it - mussels and frites and steaks and frites, charcuterie. I will go back for sure. It is loud.

Foie gras alert! Ok, so if you're not into meat you probably won't be too interested in the menu at Red Cow. Not to say there aren't items you could order and enjoy- there are some options. But they are few and far between and not the focus. We had a reservation for 8:45 which was the only decent time slot I could get for a Friday night reserving 3 weeks in advance. This is a popular spot! Their waiting area is extremely tiny and you are in the way virtually anywhere you are standing or sitting while waiting to be seated. When we sat down and settled we were given an amuse-bouche- chicken liver terrine- which was melt in your mouth delicious. We had the foie gras (3 thick pieces of torchon), lamb tongue, bacon salad. We shared the coulotte steak frites and the roasted half chicken. We agreed that the steak was okay which was a little disappointing. Maybe one of the other cuts is better. The roasted chicken was divine! We loved this dish. For dessert we shared the chocolate mousse. Our server was funny and charming. The restaurant is lively and vibrant (see: loud). It's not the best place for intimate conversation but it is a fun place to have dinner with friends or family. I would love to return but would probably not order a steak which is a bit disappointing for a steak restaurant.

I'm mad for the cow! And it's because, it's tres good! This could be my new favorite Ethan Stowell spot, and its definitely my new favorite place to get a gourmet hamburger in Seattle. Their hamburger is perfectly seasoned, generous, perfectly cooked (my doneness preference is a red medium rare) with lush toppings and an enormous side of terrifically crispy frites. The Red Cow does a fantastic job with their charcuterie, especially soft, light and generous whipped offerings like a heavenly chicken liver mousse terrine. We enjoyed the the tiny but tasty foie gras offering, and traditional, harder pistachio accented Pâté de Campagne, but if the chicken liver mousse is any indication, next round we are going all in on the charcuterie items with 'terrine' in the name. Their housemade pickling accompaniments (green beans, cauliflower and carrots) are really pumped up with caper and ginger flavor. I was on the fence about going down a star on Red Cow, mainly because one main we ordered was somewhat disappointing. The pork tenderloin was overdone, particularly on the ends, and a fairly significantly different doneness to my neighbor to the right. It was her beautiful medium rare tenderloin, a colorful plate of food and a juicy, exciting piece of meat, that inspired me to order this dish, which comes alongside a summer ratatouille. Mine was still very tasty, but definitely overcooked when compared to hers, and my pink flesh inconsistent with the red, terrific looking serving they had just presented to the lucky lady to my right. Another small ding, they don't have IPA on draft, but only in the bottle. With such a great wine list and with burgers and fries, I really hope they think about their NW audience and remedy that situation. Meanwhile, given such a great night out, terrific food, good wine, exceptional housemade charcuterie, friendly service, and an absolutely perfect hamburger, I highly recommend this spot. They do owe me a little "red pig" though, the next time I drop by.

Awesome addition to Madrona! I had NYE dinner in the bar and loved the simple concept. Steak frites and steak frites done mighty well. I happen to love this kind of menu because you know that they do one thing well, instead of those catalogue menus of so much diversity that it's hard to choose and you don't know what the real specialty is. I had the filet mignon and it was one of the best steaks I've had in a long time. The last time I paid a hefty price for a steak it was at Canlis and this was better. Much better. Melt in your mouth better. The fries and aoli were also perfection. The service was wonderful and the staff went all out for NYE, dressing up in tuxedos, 3-piece suits, and glittery gowns. Yum yum. I'll be back.

Red Cow is right across the street from another one of my favorite places Bottlehouse! Molly Moons is on the same street as well! Mind blown! I absolutely love this neighborhood. It's very cute and cozy. Lots of big, shady trees covering the sidewalks. Street parking is pretty easy to find. Overall a great location! I had a craving for steak and what better place to visit than Red Cow? It was a beautiful warm sunny day, so we opted to sit out on the patio. Didn't get any direct sun but it was warm out and a lovely setting. Food: Charcuterie: I usually go pretty plain Jane when I order Charcuterie. Today I felt adventurous to try something new. Got the Chicken Liver Mousse. It is very smooth, creamy, and light in flavor. Absolute must try! Hangar Steak: I chose the bearnaise sauce for my steak. The sauce is light white cream sauce, that's not very salty. I think I would prefer something more salty to better compliment my steak, but still delicious. I like my steak medium rare which was cooked precisely as I ordered. The steak was a bit chewy for my taste. Not sure if it's the cut of meat or what, but I think I will order something else next time. The steak comes with frites and aioli. The frites were cooked to perfection. A soft crunchy outside and a tender inside. Dranks: I ordered the French Connection which has gin, grapefuit, elderflower, and bubbly. My friend ordered the French 75, which is similar but with lemon. They both tasted very good and sweet. I would say the French Connection was more citrus/acidic and the French 75 was more sour/tangy due to the lemon.

Really enjoyed our visit at Red Cow we have been meaning to try it and walk by every time we go to the Bottlehouse. One evening the BH was closed for an event so it was the perfect time to try it out, everything was great! We had a verity of mixed drinks and split a burger and fries. All was delicious! Will definitely be back! Ambiance was good too but the house was packed and we had somewhat awkward seats at the bar, but overall was a delightful experience and the seating was to be expected on a summer evening without reservations.

3.5 cuisine, 4 service, 4 ambiance Lamb tongue - AMAZING! Beef tartare - overly minced, didn't love the preparation on this. Foie gras - tasty, but wasn't wowed. Kitchen also forgot to bring this out until the end of our meal Hanger - ordered medium rare, was a bit chewy/stringy surprisingly. Also, comes with fries, would prefer actual frites Pork chop - beautifully plated, one handsome pork chop (large enough for 2), chanterelle, carrot blend was savory but over-salted Overall, very cute spot, but prefer Ethan Stowell's other joints (Staple & Fancy, How To Cook A Wolf, Tavolata)

BonJourno! When Red Cow first opened I was going here back to back on for Charcuterie, Ribeye and Frites. In the fall before it opened, I was highly anticipating Chippys, Noyer, and Red Cow to open in 2014. I love the casual atmosphere, the location isn't infested with a bunch of traffic, and it's a pretty good spot to grab Steak n Fries. Food: Charcuterie- My favs were the Chicken Liver Mousse very Smooth and almost like a Savory Dessert, Foie Gras was very Creamy and Rich in Flavor, Beef Tartare good but didn't like some of the ingredients like the mustard, and Pâté de Campagne was moist and pretty tasty. Ribeye- I am a huge Ribeye Fanatic and there is nothing I like more than a big fat juicy Ribeye. The Ribeye here has been Sous Vide before they cook it. This makes the Ribeye pretty tender and almost like a Prime Rib to eat. The Sauces are pretty good too! I always get the Bearnaise Sauce and the Butta! Frites & Aioli- I like the sizes that the Fries are cut up to not too thin yet not too thick, Crispy, they give you a good size portion so that you can pick out the Eye Candies and not waste your Stomach Space on the less desirable ones, and what goes better with Frites than Mayo! (I hate Catchup BTW)

Our party was very disappointed in our food and cocktails at Red Cow. I had a "Don't f*ck with my foie," outburst when I exited the restaurant... I very much dislike ordering foie gras and being served pâté. The one they served here was even more offensive than other restaurants where I've experienced this practice... it is served in little circular slices that looked like it came out of a tube, as though it were a summer sausage. We ordered four 16 oz rib eye steaks and they were all a little too fatty and fibrous. My husband had difficulty cutting into it with the steak knife. The bone marrow was very basic, and my least favourite of the three different bone marrow dishes I've had this past month. The list goes on... my Aviation was too sour, my husband didn't like his Moscow Mule, and the gnocchi was very "meh" and seemed to have the exact same mushrooms (flavour and everything) that were the mushrooms in the mushroom side dish we ordered. Our server was wonderful, attentive without hovering and made wonderful wine recommendations. Unfortunately, all of us agreed that we would not be back. For the price point, we definitely had higher expectations!

I was a bit apprehensive to dine here based on some of the reviews, but I'm glad I forged ahead for dinner last night! The restaurant is small and cozy, but a bit on the loud side. We were lucky enough to get an end table. Both the coulotte and rib-eye were cooked to a beautiful medium rare, with a nice char on the outside. The compound butter didn't really add a ton to the steaks in terms of flavor, so I might go with a different sauce next time. The frites were outstanding. Nice and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It took all my willpower not to polish off the entire plate. Two thumbs up for the pate and bone marrow, but a thumbs down for dessert. Definitely the weakest link last night. Up your dessert game and we can talk about 5 stars.

Good wine list. Food delivers. Bartender was knowledgeable and authoritative but the greeter was condescending and clueless. Big Fan of rhubarb but I should have passed on the chilly crunchy rhubarb tart.

If you are known for your steak and fries but mess up the fries how are you fully booked every night?? We went in on a Monday night at 5pm (right when they opened), and were lucky to get a seat in the bar area. The whole bar was full by 5:30pm. Their menu was confusing we had to search on our phones to figure out what several of the items were... Haircots Verts = green beans by the way. The drinks: it was happy hour their red $6 wine was good, but I think they rotate their selection. They only had two beers on draft for a cost of $4 during happy hour, but the glass wasn't a pint glass. Food: - The appetizer of Moules (Mussels) with their curry broth was good. There were a few broken shells I ended up needing to spit out, maybe broken shells in normal? Also we were offered bread as an afterthought when we only had a few mussels left and a lot of broth. My husband ended up eating the whole half loaf! - Filet and Frites (Fries) I ordered the filet medium rare it was a little closer to rare (how I like it!) the outside tasted like char and it had no flavor until I dipped it into the wine sauce (another fancy name I forget). This was sadly the highlight of the meal it was so tender and awesome unfortunately the taste of charcoal made it a disappointment. The french fries (frites) tasted ok at first when hot but soon turned into a greasy mess. They were like biting into a crunchy greasy sponge yuck! I left 3/4 of my fries uneaten. - happy hour burger with a happy hour side of frites (fries) My husband had this... The burger was dry, tasteless, and brunt to a crisp on the outside. The edges of meat were crunchy and dried out. It also was super greasy, and included the tomato he said to leave off... He didn't eat half of it and left half of his fries (frites) due to the greasiness. - Side of Haircots Verts (green beans) for $8 (maybe $6) their was a sad little pile of green beans in a half stick of melted butter... The green beans were cooked perfectly, the mention of shallots was hardly found buried in the slowly hardening pool of butter in the bottom of the dish. Service: Lacking, dismissive, and absent We would have had a third round of drinks had our server not have been absent so long when we were trying to get our second round. I think we were dismissed from being well paying customers by sitting at the bar area during happy hour... even after I had ordered a filet as my entree. When asked how our food was my husband being nice said ok, I said meh but he didn't care or ask further. When I finally got my second glass of wine he didn't get me a new glass, he just brought the bottle over and poured me a small amount, only 3/4 of what I got the first time. Compared to my husbands amount that cafe out in a little carafe like mine did the first time. So we will definitely not be coming back. I will be going to Daniels Broiler that's on Lake Washington for my steaks from now on.

This is my second review of Red Cow. My first review I gave them four stars but now I give them FIVE! The first time we went, the food and service was excellent but the music that was playing was a poor choice for dinning and very distracting. I know this sounds picky but that's how off it was, it couldn't be ignored. Anyway, I am pleased to say they changed it! We returned last Friday and the music they were playing was spot on! We had the best time and as far as I am concerned they have the best steak frites in town! I think we have found our new hangout.

The name just sounds like they are ready to serve you a delicious steak, doesn't it? That's my type of name.. they just don't mess around! Coming here, I had a game plan... someone better order a steak! Restaurant is a bit cozy, so please make reservations! Even if you end up waiting for a table, there isn't much of a lobby, so call ahead, get there on time, and be seated! Nestled in the quaint Madrona neighborhood, it's quickly identifiable by the Red Cow sign hanging outside :) We wanted to try a bit of everything, so here's what we had: -Pate: A rustic preperation of pate; typically when done this way, it's a bit dry. Not here, pretty good! A bit on the chunky side, but I'm a fan as you can really taste the flavors! -Chicken Liver Mousse: Super silky and smooth! I love chicken liver mousse as it tends to always be a creamy texture than compared to a pork liver for example. It was like butter! YUM! -Foie Gras: Served as little rounds, instead of the typical seared and more oily version. This cool, creamy preparation allowed for the flavors to really shine through! Although I've been a bit foie gras'd out these days, I liked their take on this one! -Beef Tartare: Minced beef mixed up with cornichon and mustard.. a lot of mustard, it tasted like! Was there even yoke in there? No idea.. all I tasted was mustard! If it wasn't for looking at it, I wouldn't have been able to tell it was even raw beef, as the meat so so minced up! Super disappointed in this dish! I like tartare to be a mix of things, but I like to be able to taste the quality of the meat... there was so much going on in this dish that you really didn't even know what you were eating... -Hanger Steak and Frites: Served with a creamy horseradish sauce, and some mayo on the side with their fries. Asked for medium rare, however when it came out, I noticed it was pre-sliced, and maybe only 2 of the 8 slices were medium rare, the rest were more on the rare side. The flavor of the steak was DELICIOUS, but the overcooked pieces were just not cutting it for me. The fries were served a bit more on the crispy side, but their mayo tasted like real mayo the serve in Europe.. Give it a try, because it definitely doesn't taste like you're dipping your fries into kraft mayo! :) -Seared Sea Scallops: Tender and juicy, but almost too tender! It would have benefited from more of a sear to it. It was seared on top (I guess the bottom, but the sear was presented on bottom side up), and the part that was seared had a great texture to it. Will I come back? Yes, I think so.. but definitely not a priority. I would give their steaks another chance, but would definitely recommend to order maybe more rare to medium rare, as it was a bit overcooked. Also, real French restaurants serve a mean chicken, so definitely testing that next time! Simple presentations, good food, and great service. Just a bit of fine tuning on execution would really bring this place from "Meh, it's alright" to "Wow, this is awesome!"

We loved Red Cow! Food is both flavorful and interesting. Very well prepared and presented. The service was well timed, attentive, friendly and helpful while not intrusive. Wine list is great as are the cocktails. The price is fabulous for the value. The remodel of the space has improved on the problem of excessive noise that ruined the atmosphere in its prior incarnation. Now it's very pleasant. We went with family from the San Francisco area who have many friends who are chefs. They plan to return with their friends to do a "food tour" of Seattle that will definitely include Red Cow!

This out of towner was in search of foie gras on a Sunday night in Seattle. I indulge in this French delicacy everytime I travel nowadays, since it's banned in California. Smooth, buttery and minimally adorned to let the rich flavors shine through. Just a few pickled veggies and good ol' whole grain mustard as accoutrements. Definitely ask for more toast and at $8 for 3 small rings, it's not a bad price. Red Cow doesn't have the intimate feel of an authentic French bistro, but in this residential neighborhood, a casual modern style restaurant is a welcome sight. Bistro staples are prepared well, like steak frites (cooked as requested!), moules frites (plump mussels cooked in white wine/thyme sauce) and Salt cod appetizer. Good cocktails too! (the bf recommends the Black Manhattan, I had sparkling ... H20 because of lent) I do have to comment that they VERY happily use salt in their frites. Like, a LOT. While I definitely prefer my fries to be on the salty side, I had to dust off the salt on these potato sticks before inhaling them. Fantastic service and good food directly translates to a happy belly. Albeit a litle bloated.

Amazing discovery. We were looking for a French place in town and did we find one. The menu is fairly traditional French with charcuterie, mussels, steak, frites, etc. The chicken pate, foie gras were simply outstanding. My filet was amazing yet my wife's burget somehow surpassed it. Best burger I've tasted in months. We'll be back.

Love the location. Ample street parking in the Madrona neighborhood. The restaurant is cute and small but very modern and dimly lit in decor. The service is wonderful. The frites are amazingly crispy and seasoned perfectly! The foie gras and chicken pate was delicious! It also came with as much toast as we needed to finish the charcuterie! I thought my wine and Rosemary moules needed more flavor but they were cooked well. They are famous for their steaks and they were definitely delicious and cooked perfectly. The mushrooms and Brussels sprouts were nicely done as well. The profiteroles.. Omg with the coffee ice cream in the middle were amazing!

Super friendly and attentive wait staff. The waiters regularly come around to refill your water glass even though you already have a bottle of water sitting in front of you. I appreciate the little things like that. As for the food--delicious! I came in for dinner and I wasn't hungry at all. I ordered the Coulette Steak Frites with the intention of just taking it home, but I pretty much at it all because it was so good.

Loved this place and would totally go back. We did the steak tartare which was a great serving size. We finished it but would be great for 4. We also did one of the meats on the charcuterie menu and it was fantastic. It was a pork terrible but the chef mixed in pistachios and some other deliciousness. For dinner we both had the steak frites mine was with the red wine reduction and he did the compound butter. I preferred mine but again I love when the reduction seeps in to your fries. Great wine list and great atmosphere. Dim lighting made for a romantic yet fun spot for our first date night post baby #2.

Our group of four came by for Restaurant Week, and it was such a great experience! It was probably one of the best SRW meals that I've had these past few years. Not only was the food delicious, the portions were HUGE, and definitely worth the $30 plus tax/tip. First of all, Red Cow is located in an adorable unassuming neighborhood of Madrona. It reminded me a lot of Portland or the Wallingford area because I had never ventured out there before. The decor was reminiscent of the usual Ethan Stowell atmosphere; open kitchen and concrete walls. Our hostess and server were both helpful and great. We ordered the foie gras to share, and that was very rich and creamy. They gave us more toast too which was nice. I started with the frisee salad with bacon and an egg; that was so good. Loved the freshness as well as the bacon. The chicken was my favorite though. There were two pieces of I think a leg and a breast. Super tender and moist. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and the kale added a nice seasoned crunch to the bite. Needless to say, I ate it all. The profiteroles were my dessert of choice; thinking they were some sort of cream puff. There were TWO of them. Oh my... I was pretty much full at that point, but the first bite was SO good. The taste of the coffee ice cream was pretty nostalgic; having had that a lot growing up in Hawaii. The puff pastry or whatever it was sandwiched by was tasty as well. Ugh, I ate them both, I'm so bad. But on the other hand, my friend who got the steak said it tasted normal, nothing special... but the frites were amazing. Overall, the meal was fantastic and I would totally come back for the chicken, ironically, even though they're known for the steaks.

Small, intimate space in Madrona. Loved their use of Glassybabys to decorate. My boyfriend took me here to celebrate a work promotion. We started with the bone marrow which I could have eaten more of! So rich and the perfect amount of flavor. I've looked into recipes on how to prepare it so I can replicate this at home. I ordered the ribeye -- the fries were the BEST fries I've ever tasted. Soft on the inside and perfectly crunchy on the outside, not greasy. I normally like my fries soggy hah. The ribeye was alright, a bit tough to chew compared to other steakhouses I've been to. My boyfriend had the wagyu beef which was melt in your mouth. We'll be back again for their fries and try out some other appetizers soon.

If I'm going to pay $45 for a Ribeye, there is absolutely no reason they should pre-pour bearnaise sauce onto the meat! After waiting all night for the entree, I couldn't just send it back. Had already passed the point of no return. If your steak is so incredible, why mask its flavor with something else? The unsauced portion was solid, not exemplary. Chicken liver and pate was pretty good.

Let me start by saying Donald is a God! I was visiting from out of town on business so a former colleague and his husband took me here for dinner. Loved the intimate space. The oysters, liver mousse and duck breast were unbelievable.

Loved this place. Steak and fries how can you go wrong? The Fritas (fries) we perfectly cooked. Steak was cooked to our specs. Great appetizers and fun low key environment. Will definitely be back.

Craving steak frites and hoping we could find something to fill the void that Sambar/Le Gourmand and Cremant before that left behind ... we decided to give Red Cow a try despite mixed reviews. Looks like the mixed reviews were right on as there were definitely hits and misses during our quick visit and meal at their bar. 4 stars for the service -- professional and courteous without being obnoxious. 3.5 stars for the salads. The kale was fine -- but not memorable. The frisée and lardon was solid -- nice proportion of lardon to frisée to crouton. The poached egg was perfectly cooked and oozed beautifully over my salad. The salt and pepper over the salad was perfect and gave just enough flavor to the dish. 2.5 stars for the steak -- although we asked for medium well (leaning a tad bit toward well) we ended up with medium rare and that was inconsistent throughout our steak. The sauces were fine...but came in small cups that came across as chintzy. The frites would probably deserve a 3.5 -- definitely crisp but a bit under-flavored for my liking. Maybe they thought the sauces would compensate ... oh, but did I mention that there wasn't much sauce to speak of?! So caveat emptor ... options are hit and miss just like others on Yelp have shared. It's fine and my belly is full -- but I'm walking away feeling unsatisfied. Worse yet...not really looking to give this spot another chance. When oh when will worthy steak frites grace Seattle's food world again?! Heavy sigh and "pouring one out" in the memory of Sambar/Cremant -- we miss you and think of you fondly!!

As my tastes become more refined, I've grown to dislike the feeling I get after eating a big steak so I usually refrain, particularly if there's a nice fish on the menu. The same cannot be said for burgers as I've really started to critique them with the utmost of scrutiny, analyzing everything from the bun to the tomatoes. That said, I knew what I was getting into when reserving a table at Red Cow last week. I knew going in that the food was going to be good and that the burger would rival Quinn's (up to this point, the best burger in Seattle). What I didn't realize was that the ambiance was going to be relaxing, the service impeccable and the overall experience a complete joy. We started with the Pâté de Campagne and Foie Gras, followed by the Beef Tartar - all of which whet the pallet perfectly for what was next to come. The Wagyu beef was incredible - soft, tender, the fat caramelized to perfection - exactly what you'd expect in a $80 steak. Not to be outdone, we also ordered, and split, the burger - juicy, moist, the bun and accoutrements combined to near perfection. Let me just say that for any meat lover in Seattle, this is THE PLACE to go. I can't recall the last time I gave a 5 star review but the Red Cow is absolutely deserving.

Came here for dinner after making reservations, but it still took us 45minutes to get seated. No biggie. We had the 16oz ribeye with fries after hearing great reviews. The streak was cooked perfectly, but unfortunately the flavor was a miss. The flavor was overpowered by the extremely salty rub. This, with a side of also extremely salty fries and lackluster sauce made for a terrible experience.

Oh Ethan how you tempt me with the promise of steak. In his newest restaurant in his ever expanding empire Ethan Stowell promises nothing but steak and fries but that wasn't even close to the best part of the meal. Red cow is a very cute new place out in Madrona. I admit this was my first time in this neighborhood and it reminded me of a much more upscale Wallingford. The tiny restaurant is very sparsely decorated with high booths, and lots of exposed concrete. This leads to a noisy and bright dining experience. But it does give the place some fun character, however I wouldn't object if they threw some texture on the wall to quiet things down. The service is wonderful. Everyone was extremely attentive, quick, and charming. The hostess was polite even when we tried to sneak into the bar before our reservation. The only thing that was wrong with my evening was the bartender forgot my brandied cherry in my Black Manhattan... I know those things cost like 50 cents apiece and they are delicious! So that made me a little sad. Speaking of the Black Manhattan it was delicious, replacing the traditional vermouth with Averna gave the drink a herbal bitterness that toned down the overt sweetness Manhattans can have. We started our night with 3 samples from their charcuterie menu at $18. The portions were beyond generous! I honestly thought he brought us a double order and was going to charge us $36! Beef Cheek Terrine: Tender (Duh). The horseradish cream gives it some nice spice, which is good because in the quantity they serve it could get bland fast. Foie Gras: Unbelievable. Competes for the best I've ever had in Seattle (that's right Tavern Law). So complex. I tested wicked sweet hints of blackberries and honey. Creamy, yet dense. A absolute must try. Pork Rillette: AVOID at all costs. It was bland, even the fat on top was flavorless. It had a texture of pureed and thickened tuna. Nowhere near what I'd expect for this place. Ribeye (with Compound Butter) and Frites: Holy hell. This thing was huge. I'd say their 16oz estimate was silly low. The butter had a citrus component I wasn't ecstatic about and I felt it lacked salt. But I always feel that way. The ribeye was perfect medium rare, nearly fork tender. The meat had properly rested when I got it so it didn't leak all over my plate. The fries were great. I was hoping for them to be transcendent but that's on me and my lofty expectations. I will say the aioli they came with may very well be the best thing I've ever dipped fries into. Seriously it was fricken amazing. If I could do it again I'd stop by for the Charcuterie and fries and ailoi. Down a cocktail and maybe try the burger. The steak was great, but at the end of the day all it was, was a great steak.

Disclaimer: I've only been here for Seattle Restaurant Week. The best part of the meal was the frisee salad with the poached egg and bacon. I had steak frites as the entree. The hangar steak with red wine reduction was subpar because it was chewy and a bit overcooked (I like my steak medium rare/rare). For an Ethan Stowell establishment, I just expected a lot more. The frites were great though (but how can you really mess that up). Dessert was also great. Profiteroles with ice cream drizzled with chocolate, YUM. I would definitely come back to try other items on the menu, as SRW can be hectic.

Cute new place with steak and frites +foie gras & all thing French? Yes please! I've been a fan of Ethan Stowell since Union. I loved when he opened How to cook a wolf, obsessed over Staple & Fancy since 2010, enjoy Anchovies & Olive + Bar cotto and still in love with Tavolata. I don't like pizza but I liked his pizza joint too. You get the point! This was something he's never done before since Union. It's French with meat focus. No usual pasta, pizza focus on here. And everything was executed well. Came here on the official opening night last night and it was packed! Location: Red Cow took over the old Restaurant Bea. It's like dejavu being here. They kept it the same if not similar style. Casual and cool. We came around 9:30 pm and the place was packed! I like open kitchens. You can see Ethan in action from pretty much every seat in the house. How cool is that? :) Food French food!! It's french with Ethan Stowell's touch. You can find foie gras, chicken liver mousse, Rabbit terrine, mussles, burgers and of course, Steak! They also have a few delish salads and entrees like rotisserie chicken, pork chop, fish etc. Wine list is totally extensive. I can't wait to go back and try some with my meal. Since it was last Monday night, I settled for a cup of tea with my meal. We had 1. Salt Cod with watercress salad 2. Beef Tartare - divine 3. New York Strip with bernaise sauce and fries. 4. Rotisserie Chicken with kale and roasted potatoes. YUmmmm! Salt cod comes with warm toast. It's more of a spread than a salad. Beef tartare was divine!! New York strip I thought was a ok. I've had better. It was bloody and medium just the way I like it. But the chicken was packed with flavors! So delicious, I finished my plate for once!! (gasp) Service -great. The staff is pretty friendly. We had several different servers checked on us throughout our meal. Everyone seems excited and happy to tell you about the food. I even met some from other french restaurants I've frequent and we chatted like old friends. Overall, it was a delicious & laid back and casual meal for a Monday night. So laid back and smooth, you couldn't even tell it was their first night. (Well, they've been secretly opened since Thursday but official opening night was last night, Feb 10th). Looking forward to returning so I can try more steak and seafood! Maybe get more of that beef tartare and mussels?? Maybe with a bottle of Rose'?? yumm yumm!!!

Barely scratches the surface of 2.5. Not sure what all the hype is about, so I'll keep it short in effort to minimize complaining. Ordered the hangar steak medium rare. Super chewy, almost like eating a piece of beef gum, not medium rare at all. Boring, bland, not much flavor, no crust, and kind of gamey. Horseradish cream? There wasn't even a subtle sting. More just like whatever cream sauce. A steak shouldn't require an accompaniment to enhance its flavor. I realize hanger is the toughest cut of steak, but come on now. I took the rest home, cut it up, seasoned it, then made a steak omelet the next morning. Much better. Brussels sprouts were pretty good, enjoyed those the most. Service and ambiance are great! Maybe it was an off day? Thankfully there was a Molly Moon's a hop, skip, and jump away across the street at the washateria (yay!). I'll be back sometime. Hopefully it'll be better.

I've been anticipating to try Red Cow ever since it opened, but finally got to try it for SRW, and here is my review whoo! Came with couple of good friends on a Thursday evening. We made reservations but still ended waiting like 15 minutes or so, it was packed! Probably because it was the last night for SRW. Nonetheless, we got seated and the server swung by with water, and menus. He explained really nicely the different kinds of sauces you get with the hanger steak frites which most people seem to order. I ended up choosing the charcuterie plate as appetizer, moules frites with white wine and thyme sauce, and profiteroles. We also ordered a bottle of cabernet sauvignon. -Charcuterie plate: Excellent! It came with 2 nicely portioned triangular slices of pate, some pickled veggies, ground and dijon mustard. Yum!! The pate had a nice porky flavor and the pickled veggies were a nice touch. Only downside was everything on the plate was a bit salty for me, but it's charcuterie what can I say. -Moules Frites: Moules is mussels in french, and frites is fries! Fries and mussels in white wine and thyme broth! SO GOOD! The portion was nice, and the mussels were plump, although it wasn't as plump as the ones at List in Belltown (WHICH ARE BTW MY FAVS) Nonetheless, you can't go wrong with WHITE WHINE SAUCE. Yum. The frites are also very good here, it's crispy and well seasoned. -Profiteroles: The only other time I've had profiteroles were at Le Pitchet in downtown Seattle. And I must say, it was delightful!! The original profiteroles are cream puffs filled with custard creme with a chocolate sauce poured on top, but this one was filled with coffee ice cream! DELICIOUS ICE CREAM! It had more of an espresso taste to it than coffee, which I loved. My friends who got the hanger steak said it was just "okay" and pretty standard. I would like to try other parts of the steak in the near future! Considering the hanger steak is the most affordable, I'm sure other parts tastes differently. But nonetheless, Red Cow, I'll be back!

Having gone to how to cook a wolf, I wanted to try another Ethan Stowell restaurant so I did some research and found that red cow had more of a French focus. Also my family enjoys their meat so the fact that the menu was basically steak I booked reservations right away. We started with the chicken liver mousse which was a little watery than I expected. I had tried the chicken liver mousse at how to cook a wolf and expected the same thick consistency but overall it had good flavor. For entree, I got the beef short rib which was delicious. The parsnips were sweetened with some sort of sauce and had delicious texture. It came with a horseradish sauce which accompanied the beef short rib which basically tasted like beef brisket. The meat just fell apart in the best way possible. I would definitely order this again My mom got the hangar steak and my little brother ordered the coulotte steak. They both enjoyed their entrees as well. For dessert, we got the coffee pastries which were a great finish to the meal. I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Super friendly staff and cow? Bright and airy interior? How could anything go wrong? I thought the food was just ordinary and it was expensive. The gazpacho was a delight to the eye, but it was too tangy. Overpoweringly tangy, which led to some pucker factor. The wagyu was not melt in your mouth and our cut had a large portion was inedible. Hmm, I might give it one more try in the winter, for the short ribs, but this place didn't enchant me. I had higher hopes.

This restaurant makes a very sheepish vegetarian of me. I think of it all the time and I don't know how I have the strength to stay away, but somehow I do. Most of the time. I first visited during Restaurant Week and had the salad with egg and bacon, the hanger steak, and.. I can't remember the dessert because it's been a while. The salad is salty and messy and delicious. The steak is the most simple and inexpensive on their menu and it sets a damn high bar because it's SO GOOD, perfectly cooked so it just glides right along your teeth and tongue. You can get it with a variety of toppings (I've tried it with butter and with red wine, red wine is better). It comes with fries that are especially excellent the next day with a fried egg on top. The food is divine. The space is pleasant, too, as are the servers. I also enjoy trying to find all the little plastic farm animals hidden in various nooks and crannies.

A great experience. Ethan, Amy and crew take great care of their guests. Every item is lovely. Don't miss the oysters, the bacon frisée salad and the ribeye. Nice French wine selection with good items at every level. Cocktails done right - get a bourbon old fashioned and expect just 1 single, giant ice cube.

We came on Saturday night. I love the ambient and simplicity of the place. The server was very attentive and friendly. The drink was excellent. But it was not what we were here for. I had their Red Cow's cut. My boyfriend had the filet minion. Worth every penny! It was some expensive steak but totally worth it! Mine was exceptional. We skipped the desert to go across the street to have ice cream at a tiny ice cream store. You got to try it. The ice cream was good and it is just fun to do so.

After MKT, this is my next fav Ethan Stowell location. The focus on meat is great and steaks are incredible. We had the rib eye which melted in your mouth, and the fries are literally the best I've had in Seattle. The charcuterie plates are heavy on pate but exceptional, just very rich. Service is very helpful, and the ambience is intimate and neighborhood in feel. Would definitely recommend!

Sadly, I've not been as bowled over as most of the people here. I came here with one of my besties for dinner since I was in town for work. We ordered the Frisee salad, a few munchies and a gargantuan steak to share. I'd have to say that the best part of the dinner was the salad, but the ribeye was chewy, really fatty and came strangely colder on the outside than in the middle (for a medium rare steak, that was... um, rare). The frites were GREAT though. I couldn't stop eating them even though I was strictly on a low carb diet. All in all, a good place, but not for what I was expecting for an Ethan Stowell restaurant. Returning back to the "Wolf" next time.

Great spot. I likes this place a lot - I got the burger and was SUPER satisfied. The fries were delicious and the sauces were great. We got a fresh little salad to share at first and that was good too. Loved the atmosphere and the service, but you pay for it.

Red Cow. It almost hurts me to write this. As an admitted lover of all things Ethan Stowell, I have a couple of bones to pick with the cow! I am going to tell you that I love the location, the design, the restaurant overall, as all of the ES empire, is very well thought out and executed. I will tell you that I love the hostess, who is very friendly and welcoming, (and not too bad to look at either). I will tell you that I love the drinks, and I love the charcuterie platter, (although I vehemently disagree with a pork rillette that is presented more like a pre-cooked duck confit, (with a layer of fat over the actual rillette). It was definitely not bad, in fact it was really good, outside the fat layer. I will tell you that the salads were fantastic as always. I will tell you that the quality of beef was high. Really good. But I must balance that with the following. I am a beef aficionado....not some weekend griller who thinks they know a nice cut...but I really know what makes beef amazing. As much as it pains me to say it, my $70 12oz. Mishima Ranch Wagyu New York Strip was just underwhelming for what it cost. It just didn't reach to the expectation of the price. I have been fortunate enough to have Japanese A5, and all types of Wagyu but this one fell flat for me. The $44 Filet was also, GOOD, but it was $35 good, not $44 good. And now for the surprise of the night, (insert drum roll please), the 12oz. Coulotte was RIDICULOUS. By far the best beef of the night!!! And at only $27 it was also by far the steal of the night! Here comes the weird part. I am an avid diner at all of the ES restaurants. I have become friendly with several of the employees of said restaurants. I am a guy who likes to go out of his way to treat the staff with respect because I like the relationship. I like to have a good time and I look at great service as a very important part of that experience. Our server, (name unknown as he didn't bother to introduce himself), was professional. He did exactly what he was hired to do. He took our orders and brought the items we had ordered in a professional manner. The issue is, since I do go out of my way to relate to the people who are providing this service, I just am hoping for the tiniest bit of response. ANYTHING...a smile, a chuckle, a nod, a wink...THROW ME A FREAKING BONE!! I feel like I know what one of the Wayans brothers would feel like doing a show at the annual KKK revival meeting. It was just really flat and honestly took some shine off the evening. Is this some weird affliction I have? Maybe...but your job as a server isn't just to take orders and bring things to the table, its to RELATE with the customer. I am not talking schmalzy ass kissing...I am talking be friendly and maybe talk to me like you are happy to be there and happy to have me there. Hell, you can even tell me how shitty of a day you are having, I can identify with that and I will still appreciate the fact that you RELATED to me. I am spending several hundred dollars in the establishment that you work in. You stand to make a very significant tip as I am very appreciative of the service industry. I hate to admit it...this guys lack of relating cost him cash. He still got more of a tip than the rest of my party thought he should get, but it cost him 50 percent. That wasn't to be punitive, I just feel that there is a "standard" tip, and then there is the "relatable" tip. If you do the slightest bit of relating and any sort of schmoozing, or just plain old being nice, you will get a bigger tip from me, every single time. ANYWAYS, sorry about the rant. The place is good, but avoid the unreasonably high priced cuts and stick with the winners.

This place has the best steaks in town. Not only that but they have multiple selections of what type of sauce to get on the side that enhances the flavor as well. I went with butter because I treat myself but they all looked delicious. The fritas and begginer salad were also a hit. Im serious about this steak situation, if you want to impress a girl or client take them here. Great atmosphere as well.

Within a week of Red Cow opening the buzz around it had me dying to go. I finally someone to dine with me three weeks after it opened. I made a Wednesday reservation Monday afternoon and the only available spots were 6pm, 8:15pm and later. I snagged the 6pm slot. We got caught in traffic and when I called to push my reservation back to 6:30, the lady was hesitant but said they could accommodate. The place was quite full for a Wednesday night, so I totally understood where she was coming from. Point is, they are popular. Make a reservation. We started off with a glass of red wine and three of their Housemade Charcuterie, Pâté de Campagne, Beef Cheek Terrine, and the Pork Rillettes. For $18, the portions were bigger than you would expect. Perfect starter for two people. They were also very delicious! Our favorite was the Pâté with the Prok Rillettes coming in a close 2nd. The charcuterie came with dashes of sauce on the side, pickled vegetables, and crostini. We both ended up getting the New York Strip. We asked the waiter for sauce recommendations for the New York Strip. He told us that the Béarnaise and Red Wine Reduction are the best for the cut. I ordered it medium rare more on the rare side with the Béarnaise sauce. The lightly seasoned steak came out perfectly cooked and the sauce paired great. My friend ordered his medium with the red wine reduction, which was also an amazing sauce pairing. If you like your steak cooked medium, they do it well here. But even my friend had to agree medium rare is the way to go with Red Cow's New York Strip! The frites had a yummy crispy outing and soft in the middle. They had a very rustic fresh out of the fryer potato taste. It was served with a side of aoli. It tasted like straight mayonnaise, but since that is my preferred dipping sauce, i wasn't complaining. I am just glad I didn't have to be the weirdo asking for a side of mayo this time! Neither of us were able to finish our dinners so we boxed the rest to go and skipped dessert. All in all the service was friendly, the ambiance was enjoyable, and the food was top notch. The place is small so it was pretty noisy. Can't wait to try their other hosemade charcuteries and possibly a different cut of steak!

Really really loved my meals here. The steak tartare was delicious but the lamb tongue appetizer really stole the show - what an amazing flavor and a gorgeous melt-in-your-mouth consistency. I had the coulotte steak medium-rare - cooked perfectly (albeit a bit more of a European-style medium-rare) - with the compound butter. The seasoning on the steak didn't need much more accompaniment that the compound butter although I did taste the bearnaise and was impressed with it. The frites are also seasoned nicely and beautifully crispy on the outside with tender insides. I haven't tried the fancy, expensive cuts of meat - given that it's an Ethan Stowell restaurant, I'd expect them to be good. But to my mind, good steak frites is about preparing "lesser" cuts perfectly so I think I'll try the hangar next time - but otherwise I was very satisfied with my coulotte. I will definitely be back - one of the best steaks in Seattle (along with Millers Guild).

It's the second day since they opened. I'm optimistic about Red Cow because they offer solid French-esque food items sans the uptight "oui oui" blowhards and obnoxious mustaches that come with French cuisine. You know, the mustaches that look like they have a dried turd permanently affixed to their upper lip. Red Cow is simultaneously casual and uninviting resembling an unfinished civil engineering project started by a moody, color blind 16-year-old. It's dark, weird, and screams itchy scarf and second-hand Chuck Taylors. I'm very particular about dressing for the occasion and for Red Cow, I would forego any variant of a thong. No sane woman likes persistent wedgies unless they're planning to get laid, which is not happening here. Aside from the conversation I had the misfortune of hearing at the table next to me where it leads me to believe the most exciting thing these women have done in their lives is tweeze their armpits, everything else seemed to be on par with Ethan Stowell standards. His menus are always reasonably priced while offering a generous serving of food. We ordered the New York Strip with the horseradish sauce, the Roasted Half Chicken with kale and potatoes, and the Beef Tartare. The New York Strip was just average but I've never found any slice of steak amazing. It's just fucking steak. Who is ever like, oh, honey, that overly chewy back of a cow that's 15 oz more than I should ever eat in one sitting and served off a flat-top unseasoned and unmarinated was AMAZING! Absolutely exquisite! Put a Zagat sticker on it! The best out of those three was the chicken because I was enthusiastic about every bite. They give you half a breast and a thigh that are both succulent, tender, and is roasted at a high enough temperature to get a nice crisp on the skin. I consider it a winner when paired it with nicely baked and crispy Yukon potatoes and baby kale. A good choice for any dining companion, even those who fall in the category of ironed granny panties vanilla wafer. The Beef Tartare feels more like something that was added on after-the-fact to appease all of the insufferable, whiny food crusaders. I enjoyed it but it didn't set off any fire alarms. The beef is mixed with dijon mustard, dill, onions, and enough miscellaneous crap that destroys the integrity of raw beef. I'll come back again because nothing about this place turned me off and it's a good place to hang. I suggest the seared scallops even though I've never had them but I saw another person eat them and they looked delicious. That's what I'm having next time.

Last night was my first time at Red Cow, and being a fan of Stowell's other restaurants in Seattle I was excited to try his newest. Our waitress was fantastic and recommended several plates that my family and I loved. The charcuterie, the wine, the gem lettuce salad - all fantastic. Fast forward to the entrée, where I was excited to try the moules frites, one of my favorite guilty pleasures. My partner's father ordered them as well, and the rest of our party ordered steaks. The mussels were tasty, but nothing I couldn't recreate at home; however, the fries were delicious with the aioli: bright, citrusy, and deliciously garlicky. We all split a fig tart and called it a night, feeling full and happy. It wasn't until bright at early at 6 AM this morning that I was shaking and nauseous and definitely sick. Sadly, I heard that my partner's father was also ill, which puts the blame directly on the mussels (no one else felt ill today). I want to give this restaurant another chance, but they've clearly got some health safety issues to address until I walk back in there again.

We had an absolutely amazing visit to Red Cow last night. We arrived at 7.30 and was immediately seated at our table - we had a reservation. Our waiter was so attentive and professional and made great suggestions to wines, based on preferences, and he hit spot on. We started out with the foie gras, which was very good. The bread/crackers served on the side, was nothing special, but the foie gras in it self was very nice. The house pickles was interesting and a nice thing to have on the side. We both ordered steaks - my partner a 16oz Rib Eye medium-rare, as recommended by our waiter. It was nice, but didn't by far measure up to my 8oz Filet Mignon. I ordered it bleu, and was immediately asked my preference as to temperature, which I appreciated very much. It's not very common in the US to find places that are knowledgeable of preparing it bleu, in my experience. I've eaten lots of steaks in Europe and Australia, and I'll go as far as saying this is the best steak I've ever had. The meat was held back for us, as we asked for, and served at the perfect time. It was absolutely incredible. It was served with a great bearnaise, as requested. You could mistake the fries for being standard and boring by looking at them, but they were incredibly good and served with aioli. We got a side of mushrooms with a duck egg, which I didn't taste, unfortunately, but my partner said it was very good. For dessert my partner ordered the sorbet, and I ordered the chocolate mousse, making a joke that I knew that the profiteroles would be the classy thing to order. Our waiter brought us our desserts, plus a plate of profiteroles, which we appreciated (and enjoyed!!) very much! We were so happy with the service and the whole experience, and are definitely coming back. Thank you! EDIT: Forgot to mention that the house playlist was incredibly good. We didn't think it was too loud in the restaurant in general, though they had more or less full house, as many others mention, and I'm normally very sensitive to that. Maybe they've done something to improve acoustics?

Had plans to come here before but unfortunate circumstances delayed my visit but I was persistent in making it. Just my luck my friend made reservations during Restaurant week was going on! I thought about just going for the normal menu with all the yummy apps available but I thought I should have some restraint. All worked out I was looking at the hanger steak as I wasn't hungry enough for the rib eye for two (me). And it was listed as one of the options for restaurant week. Win win. I also opted for the Charcuterie as an app and it was the Pâté de Campagne. As much as I hoped it was the chicken liver mousse I was not disappointed. Very tasty! The steak came out great med rare with frites. You would think something as simple as frites would go over looked. However I have had sad fries before. You all know what I mean by sad fries. The soggy ones that have a hard time keeping it up? Well that wasn't a problem with these guys. Crips and well seasoned not too much salt. For dessert I had the Profiteroles with Coffee Ice Cream. I don't mind the fancy name. I love cream puffs with ice cream ;) Food was great company was better. Ambience was a bit loud. Hard to talk even across the table.

Frites were GREAT. Salads were good (beet and heirloom tomato salads). But 2 of 4 steaks were bad - mine was ordered medium rare but delivered medium well (along with being tough AND gristly). $40+ steaks should not be tough/laden with gristle (coulette - nice fat caps, but thick gristle underneath). Had our server, had ANYONE asked, we would have quietly and nicely pointed out the flaws in our steaks. This stuff happens in good restaurants, and we understand that. But once our order was placed, we never interacted with the server again. Well, that's not entirely true - we got the perfunctory 'how're your entrees?' just moments after the plates had been set in front of us - that was it. When humans did interact with us at the conclusion of the meal, it was curt and detached (dessert menu simply placed near me as server walked by - check placed by SA as he walked by - ...). Rare poor experience at a Stowall owned restaurant. I tipped the waiter 20% - but it was not at ALL earned. Too many better options in Seattle ... Likely won't be back.

Is Ethan Stowell single? Cuz I want to see about proposing. Set aside the fact that I'm straight. Still I see a long happy marriage for us or me I guess. Steak tartare was outstanding as was the foi. Popular spot likely a reservation is necessary but if just the two of you stop in and you just might get lucky as my companion and I did. Oh and the steak was cooked perfect as you'd expect from a steak house.

Been here 5 times and love it! Steaks are awesome but the fries are like crack and keep me coming back.

I'll make this quick. Red Cow served a perfect piece of Wagyu beef when I was there one Saturday. Cooked to perfection. Not one display or taste of error. Excellent. As for the sides and beer list. It seemed standard issue for Seattle.

I would give this place 5 stars for the charcuterie and fries alone. Went here for a special occasion and had one of the best meals I can remember in Seattle. Had the Pork Rillettes, Lamb Terrine, and Smoked Veal Breast to start. All 3 were amazing and there was so much! Finished with the Ribeye and frites. Both were perfect, but seriosly , best fries I've ever had. I know, blasphamy that I would want the fries more than the steak. But the fries. I would go back just to eat fries. Scratch that, I WILL go back just to eat fries. Well, if I can get passed the charcuterie. Or both. Yeah, both. And a steak.

Excellent meal and service. My wife and I went recently for date night - I got the feeling quite a few of the other diners were there for the same thing. The pate de compagne we had to start was perfectly porky. The pickled green beans which accompanied were a salty foil to the pate. I had the burger and fries - both incredible. Juicy burger cooked medium rare and hot well seasoned fries. My wife had the curried mussels which were cooked nicely but not something to write home about. The green beans we had as a side were just amazing - if I could cook them like that I would eat greens beans every night.

I think Ethan Stowell is fast becoming my favorite local celebrity Chef. I am a picky eater. There, I said it. But I can always find something I will eat, and love, at Ethan Stowell restaurants. Red Cow was no exception. I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday. We both like steak, and while I can't afford the likes of John Howie or the Met, I thought he deserved a delicious dinner. We both ordered the steak frites, mine the Hanger($21) and for him the boneless Ribeye($36). Which was basically just a gigantic piece of tasty meat on a plate. The steaks were both delicious, and all steaks come with a sauce. I got the Bearnaise and he had the compound butter, like usual I think the compound butter is the real winner, but I did enjoy the Bearnaise. The fries were delicious, and I also loved the mayo on the side. The French are right, frites+ mayo= Heaven. Make sure and get a little of the steak sauce on the fries to make them even more tasty. While none of the appetizers looked appealing to us(heavy on house-made Charcuterie and seafood), we did enjoy our side of Brussel Sprouts. The sprouts could have been cooked a bit longer for my liking, a bit too crunchy, but the flavors with the bacon and grilled onions was delicious. We both ordered some of the house cocktails, which were good, and reasonably priced, but overall much too sweet. They didn't have St Germaine for the drink my boyfriend ordered though, so the bartender concocted something similar for him, and his drink price was waived for the hassle. While we definitely enjoyed our food, there were a few things to note: It is really quite loud in here. It was packed when we arrived at 630 on a Sunday night, and very, very loud. I think that is fairly common of Ethan Stowell places, but it made an intimate conversation a bit hard. As the place emptied out I was surprised at how quiet it was. Our server was fine, very knowledgeable and kind. My complaint being the kind of service the table next to us(3 feet away) got compared to us. He was very friendly with them, having long conversations, and even bringing them free drinks and desserts. It just bothered me. I personally think since everyone is paying customers, they all deserve the same treatment. I will definitely be back though. The food was delicious.

Everything from tattoo parlor reco's to un petit café. I don't know who Ethan Stowell is, but his food game comes correct. We dropped a few hundred bones after it was all said and done. But after it was all said and done, we were done. My wife and I shared the crazy Mishima Reserve Wagyu Eye of the Ribeye along with sides of ratatouille and mushrooms with a duck egg on top. Of course, that was after we shared a dozen of the best oysters I have ever had. They were off-menu oysters, of course. You know how we do. I have been to all the major steak houses: Mortons, Lowry's, Dukes, etc. I've had some steaks, that's real. Or so I thought. That Mishima Reserve Wagyu, while I am not sure how to pronounce it or what it's all about, is the best cow I've ever had. My plate was so clean by the end of the evening, the dishwasher probably just put it back in the stack of clean plates without running it through the wash. I highly recommend this place. I don't know that the frites are all that everyone says they are. The taste like slightly better Five Guys fries. But everything else is on point. Also, make reservations. It's not the smallest restaurant, but it fills up fast.

My doctors gave me a Ethan Stowell gift card for Christmas and it took me a while to figure out which restaurant I wanted to go to since they all had great reviews. Since Red Cow was fairly new and I love steak, my husband and I decided to go here for dinner. It was a great experience, everyone was so nice! We came when the restaurant first opened so they were able to seat us. I highly recommend to call ahead to reserve a table because the place is tiny and gets filled up fairly quickly. If it's a party of 2-3, you can sit in the bar area. For appetizer we had the curry mussels, it was good. Dipping the bread with the sauce was the best! My husband ordered the short ribs and that was to die for! The meat was just so tender and the wine sauce with it gave it a lot of flavor. I ordered the ribeye with the butter sauce. The sauce didn't give it too much flavor but my steak was tender. I recently went on their website and it looks like the menu has changed a bit. If you go to Red Cow you should ask if they still have the short ribs for you. :)

Enjoyed a lovely meal and service on New Year's eve. There were some problems with the reservation site, and they opened the bar area for reservations to assure we were seated. So pleased this gem of a restaurant chose Madrona.

Loved the entire experience! Compliments to Chef Thom and the crew at Red Cow! The braised short rib with the horseradish cream sauce will keep me coming back!! The massive portion of mussels and frites were delectable and could easily feed a party of 2. The butternut squash soup was a perfect pick me up from the cold weather outside and playfully presented in espresso cups. The frites, my God the frites!! They must be fried up in beef lard or something amazing because these frites are crunch-tastic! Looking forward to my next visit.

As a review goes, one should take in all things to be considered. Red Cow served a great steak. Period. The frites were excellent as was the salad, everything you would expect from an Ethan Stowell spot. But it was completely overpriced. Everything was far too expensive, from the cost of a rib eye to a bottle of wine to pair it with. It was very crowded, sitting at the bar to eat is a challenge as the space between stools is very tight. Great sitting in front of the kitchen but crowded.

Went here for Valentine's Day and had such an amazing time. Our server, Cameron, was so personable and fun... didn't miss a beat. We had perfect service, the food was fantastic... The oysters were SO fresh, steak and chicken were both fantastic, and he brought me wine that I absolutely loved and he doesn't even know me. Then found out the place had only been open for 8 or 9 days. I've been to restaurants that recently open and I've never had such a perfect experience. Will absolutely be going back. We sat in the restaurant but the bar looks amazing as well. Small space overall so perfect for any nights out. Intimate but fun.

We wanted to go to Red Cow but cannot see how they justify their prices/quality. The menu advertises a special ranch where the meat comes from, but it turns out to be a large beef conglomerate-- growth hormones, antibiotics in the feed and GMO corn (at least, that's what the ranch website says). Also, Red Cow doesn't advertise any aged meats. To me, the menu is misleading- how can you advertise such high quality and use a ranch that condones these practices? We'd really love to try the restaurant but I'll keep checking back to see if they begin to offer any better quality options.

I try not giving 5 stars too often but this was really exceptional. I am a big fan of Ethan's restaurants and this one is different and great. We had half the menu it seemed and everything was good. My foodie friend who joined me for dinner said the chicken liver mouse is the best he has ever had. The steak sauces were amazing. I just wish we had time for dessert

We have loved every Ethan Stowell restaurant we have tried, so we were stoked to try Red Cow, which is close to home for us. We went shortly after opening for an 8pm reservation. The restaurant itself is small and plain but the tables are comfortable. It's noisy inside and I think adding some décor could make the ambience and experience a little more pleasant. Upon sitting down we ordered drinks, a beer for my husband and a French 75 for me. His came after 5 minutes, but mine took 25 minutes to come out! When our appetizers came out we asked the expo if mine had been forgotten and he sent our server over a few minutes later. He seemed annoyed and said they were calling in a 2nd bartender. When I finally did get the drink, it had way too much citrus and I was unhappy to pay $9 for a mediocre drink that took 25 minutes to make. Now to the food, which is the really special part of Red Cow. For appetizers we ordered the Mushroom Tartine and the Beef Tartar. Both were delicious but the tartar really stood out! I loved the addition of the pickle to the tartar and I could seriously eat it forever. For dinner we ordered the Roasted Half Chicken and the Boneless Ribeye. Both were amazing! I have never tasted chicken so good. It was moist and well-seasoned and so savory. The steak was delicious and cooked perfectly. And we loved the fried and aioli. We ordered the chocolate mousse for dessert. It was good but did not live up to the entrees and appetizers. I hope the bar gets some help and the service improves, but the food is stellar so we will definitely be back to Red Cow.

I wish this place wasn't so far. A two hour drive on a weekday from the east side is killer, but luckily the food made up for it. I have no idea where they get their bread from, but it is so good. We got refills with our bone marrow appetizer since the sauce on the plate was so addicting. I had a Moscow mule, which was delicious as well. They use Rachel's ginger beer. For my main course, I ordered the filet mignon with béarnaise sauce and frites. The béarnaise sauce was on point. Sadly I think I only had a few frites. It tasted extra fried and hollow inside. It was missing the starchiness of a potato. Overall I think I'd be back to try something else on Red Cow's menu.

My wife and I ate there last night. We've always been really happy with Ethan Stowell restaurants, so I was pretty eager to try Red Cow. For the second night, they sure seemed to be running a tight ship. They got us seated within a few minutes of our reservation time. I ordered the ribeye and guess what? It came out rare. It pains me to go out for steak since most places really have no concept of what a rare steak is. I didn't see them cook it, but it tasted to me like it was basted in a pan with butter and thyme. It was excellent. My wife had the cheeseburger and it was fantastic. We also had the steak tartar and pate de campagne. The pate was wonderful. It was seasoned well and the meat wasn't dry, like most pates. The tartar was fine, but it wasn't memorable, if you catch my drift. Nothing wrong with it; I just won't remember it six months from now, whereas I'm already dreaming about recreating the pate at home. The service was impeccable for the second day. I have a faint idea of what it takes to get a restaurant up and running and it just seemed to me like there weren't any kinks to be ironed out.

I would give Red Cow a solid 4 stars. The food is excellent but the service is just plain cold. It's prompt and efficient but I have been there three times and have never left feeling warm and fuzzy at all. I know it's a new restaurant but the servers and hosts could do a MUCH better job of making diners feel welcome. I frequented the previous restaurant quite often and the decor has hardly changed - it is quite stark and it is extremely loud inside. I was surprised with the table decor - just a plate with a small white candle. Too bad they haven't gotten on the Glassybaby bandwagon. As for the food, I had the filet and bone in ribeye (split 3 ways), both with the bearnaise sauce, as well as the burger. I would recommend everything. The only critique/note is that the sauce comes on top of the steak and I didn't love the bearnaise with the filet as much as the ribeye because it was a bit overpowering. The frites are great, as you would expect at a steak-frites restaurant. The restaurant is not inexpensive but I do not feel it is overpriced. I quite agree with the pricing of the entrees. There are less expensive menu items than the steak (save for the lesser expensive hanger steak) that I have heard are equally wonderful. Red Cow has a wonderful wine list, but be prepared to spend a small fortune. I live in the neighborhood and am pleased to have another more upscale restaurant in Madrona to give us non-parents a place to eat. If you go anytime soon, definitely make a reservation!

I dropped in on my way home from work and found the room inviting and full of friends and neighbors. The service was top notch and the food at every table looked perfect! Burger, Oysters, Steaks...brilliant and affordable wine list. The bartender was attentive and had a great sense of humor.

We were able to snag a reservation, so we didn't care that it was for 5pm. We were among the first tables this evening, and they are definitely running a tight ship. From what we could see, about 1/3 of the tables were seated at 5pm and then tables were staggered in 30 minute intervals after that. It was definitely full, but we didn't get a sense that things were frantic for just having opened a few days ago. For apps, we got oysters and the potato leek soup. The creme fraiche on the soup wasn't necessary, but it was still above average. The freshly grated horseradish for the oysters was a nice touch, and I certainly preferred that to the mignonette. We both ordered steaks: his the strip and mine the boneless ribeye. Both were outstanding. This is a steak joint, and they are doing steaks really well. The portions were huge, and in the future we'd likely split one and order additional apps. The "frites" part of the steak frites were ok. Nothing to write home about, but they were hot when served. We also ordered some brussels sprouts, and they were underwhelming. The menu says they are roasted, but ours were steamed and sitting in a puddle of liquid. The bacon wasn't crisped, and the entire dish was forgettable. We topped our meal off with the profiteroles, and they were fine. The pastry was good, and the gelato had something that provided a little surprise crunch, which was nice. It wasn't necessarily a deeply inspired dessert, but it did the job. For what it is, it's really quite good. We wouldn't come here regularly, and we'd probably order differently to suit our tastes, but it's a great start for a new restaurant!

We loved Red Cow! Ate too much, yum French everything. My favorite Moules Frites, mussels in white wine and thyme accompanied with fries. My second favorite was the Salt Cod in a mason jar with watercress on toast. We also enjoyed the roasted Marrow Bones and the juicy Beecher's Cheddar Bacon Burger. Our neighbors had the roasted chicken with Brussel sprouts, which we'll try next time or a steak with Bearnaise or frisee salad with poached duck egg. Ethan Stowell hits the mark with this intimate French neighborhood bistro. The restaurant is cozy yet sleek with zinc tables, bare walls and an open kitchen. We personally enjoyed the bar area as well as the entertainment value of watching the kitchen. The restaurant opened this week, yet the staff was fast and attentive as if they'd been open longer. We are Stowell fans, yet this isn't his typical pasta joint, instead délicieux French fare. Can't wait to return.

We made reservations for 2. Something came up and we were 30 mins behind. I called their number and it just lead me to a voicemail saying that they'll get back to me ASAP if I leave my name and number. that was kind of annoying... If they were on the line with me, I would've given them the ok to give the table to another party so that they wouldn't have to wait. When we got there, no one greeted us and we stood around for five mins before anyone noticed or acknowledged our presence. Got seated and waited TWELVE MINUTES for our server to come by with water. Lol REALLY?! We didn't want to wait for service so we just ordered when he finally poured our water. I ordered the Ribeye medium and the bubs ordered the New York medium rare. My steak was eh and fatty but cold? My compound butter was still hard and did not melt. For some reason, my steak was bloody and completely raw inside. I couldn't flag down our waiter or anyone else so I waited (some more) and he finally came by and took my steak to the back to get it cooked to my liking. I really wanted to ask for salt but when the bubs asked for ketchup, our waiter gave us a nasty look so I didn't even bother. Though, I know their food is under seasoned because BOTH tables next to us asked for salt... The fries were okay, the fries I make at home are exactly the same lol. I reeeeeaaally wish they had another starch or potato option :/ The aioli was alright and the horseradish sauce was good, would taste better if it was more spicy! MY FAVORITE PART OF THE MEAL WAS THE KALE!!! I've never had such a side dish! Holy cow lol id eat the kale by itself if I could! The noise level is LOUD. It was hard to be intimate and talk to my partner bc the surrounding tables were yapYAPYAAAAPPPING, nearly screaming. I would come back... Just not that often lol. I will try either the mussels or chicken next time.

I'm somewhere between 3 and 4 stars.... Came for Seattle Restaurant Week and thought the food was good. I ordered the sunchoke soup, which was a bit bland at first taste but grew on me. It was a HUGE portion for a SRW starter. For my entrée, I ordered the hanger steak and frites. The steak comes with your choice of sauce, and I opted for the compound butter. The steak was cooked perfectly (medium), but served cold, so the butter never fully melted. I didn't care for that. However, the fries and the aioli were the stars of the meal. Crispy, chewy, salty - delicious. And the aioli was the lightest I've ever had. It almost had a whipped consistency, instead of the usual heavy and dense consistency. I ordered the profiteroles for dessert and got 2 of them, which I couldn't finish. The criticisms: I called to try and push back our reservation by 30 mins so the third person in our party could make it, but the host said they couldn't take a later reservation for that table. She said we could try open seating in the bar, but she couldn't make guarantees. We kept the reservation, but instead had it for 2 people instead of our original 3. When we got there, though, the place was only half full - and remained that way throughout our dinner until nearly 8 p.m. - and we were seated at a 4-top, so they could've accommodated a later reservation. Also, the bar was only 1/3 full the whole time. The place is still new; they aren't fully booked yet, so they should stop acting that way. Also, the service was not great. My friend ran out of her cocktail about 10 mins into the main course, and the waiter never stopped nor glanced our way. She didn't get a refill until dessert, when she finally caught the attention of another waiter. I'll probably go back to this place and try a couple other menu items, but I'm in no rush. And if the (lack of) service continues, I won't return.
