First, the customer service here is really nice. They were really friendly and it set the all around mood for the place. I wasn't afraid to actually sit down and eat my food like other places usually make me. Second, their sundaes are really amazingly delicious! I had the recess one (the one with the joke attached to their order, haha). I'd highly recommend this place if you haven't tried it yet.

I definitely love that a place on the West Coast is selling frozen custard, which was always a treat when I was back in Michigan, but seems much harder to find out here. The frozen custard I had from here was pretty decent. Worth checking out if you're new to the custard world, but not life changing.

my kinda joint! simple, classic amazing goods with some creative twists. base flavors made every day with a special. some great combos on the board and an ok price for quality product! any brownie/chocolate combination is a win here in my book! creamy goodness!

I'm a big ice cream fan and came here with a girlfriend after having lunch nearby on a sunny Saturday day. They have special flavors-I tried the mint chocolate chip and cookie butter, and decided to go with the cookie butter. It was pretty good! I got it in a cake cone. It's really creamy. The difference between regular ice cream and frozen custard is that it has egg yolks added to it. The gal working was so nice and helpful and letting us sample multiple flavors. They also have sundaes, shakes, root beer floats, you name it!

If you like ice cream and gelato but you haven't tried frozen custard, you're missing out. Very rich and creamy. They have chocolate and vanilla everyday, along with a special flavor(s) that change everyday throughout the month! It's not a normal ice cream scoop shop with 31 crazy flavors to choose from every single time you visit: be warned but don't be scared. It is simple, it is old school, and it is worth stopping by for good quality treats. They don't think it be like it is, but it do. They have a chalkboard calendar that tells you what flavors are coming up... Keeps me excited and wonderin what flavors are next! They also have prepackaged pints of various custards if you want to skip the daily, vanilla, and chocolate. I always get the sundaes here. I usually don't like sundaes, nor do I prefer chocolate peanutbutter ice cream BUT their muddy buddy sundae rocked my socks off. A definite slap to the face... a yummy, loving slap to the face. It changed the way I feel about chocolate PB. OSFC, you have converted me. I also like their playground sundae. If you're familiar with that old school "dirt cup" pudding treat, it's exactly that! And it is good. You can customize your sundae however you want; I asked for my playground to be with one vanilla one chocolate scoop, instead of the defaulted two chocolates scoops and they were happy to do that for me! Customer service is always amazing and the place gives a nice, intimate, casual, friendly vibe. Great quality creamy treats and great employees. Novel, daily flavors, and to-go pints. What more do ya need at an old school dessert joint?

My wife is a frozen custard afficionado so we had to find some when we came to town. We also had a 10% discount card to use after the Savor Seattle tour we took that morning. The store was empty on a Wednesday afternoon. We shared a turtle sundae that was very tasty. While I've had creamier, richer tasting custard at other shops, I still enjoyed this one very much.

Wow. Amazing. I love custard and this place does some awesome things with frozen custard. We had the s'mores sundae and the cookie blitz. The custard is super tasty and loads of different choices - highly recommended!

Frozen custard for me will always be special. Coming from a really cheap Asian American family, we never had dessert when we ate out (if we ever ate out D:). But there was one instance where my dad just out of the blue decided to buy us all frozen custard. This place brings me back on those memories. The texture was exactly as I had remembered it. Suuuuuper smooth and creamy and amazingly delicious. This place has a bunch of different flavors that rotate almost every day. We had the espresso and also the cookie butter which were both excellent. The espresso you could really taste the coffee flavor in your mouth and it lingers like a nice freshly brewed espresso. Although the cookie butter temperature was a little lower than my girlfriend and I liked, it was still delicious. My one gripe is that I really wish this place would have proper ice cream cups. They use the kind of cups that you usually get a drink in, which is kind of annoying when you want to switch in between the flavors you get. In any sense, I'll definitely be coming back again. It's true what they say, the best foods bring you back to your childhood, and this place definitely did.

Oh my GOSH. This is a MUST go-to place if you're roaming around Pike Street!!! I was recommended by my friend to come here and I'm SO glad I made the stop here even though I was super full from lunch. The shop is fairly easy to find and there's a lot of street parking. I walked in and noticed a calendar on my right drawn on a chalkboard that had various flavors labelled each day. I realized it's the 'flavor of the day'. How this shop works is that there is a flavor of the day that you can get or other simple flavors (I know on the daily they have Vanilla as an option for frozen custard; also, they usually have the flavor from the previous day to sell that day as well). The signature sundaes are always available too but cost more but I'm sure it's totally worth it! I went on January 19, 2014 and it was Cookies n' Cream! My favvvv! I was super tempted to order the Muddy Buddy from the Signatures, but I was too full. But the Cookies n' Cream was SOOO GOOD! The frozen custard is VERY smooth and I love the essences of egg custard you taste from the Cookies n' Cream. The frozen custard isn't too sweet and not too cold either; it's perfect and melts on your tongue sooo nicely! I got 1 scoop which was $3.55 (yay for no sales tax!). I was so sad when I finished my scoop. It was heaven in a cup! I will most definitely come back to Old School Frozen Custard to try the other flavors and will definitely make room for it!!!

I've been to the (now closed) Fremont location, and was happy to skip the crowds at Molly Moon on a sunny Saturday and hike up the hill to eat here. We split a s'mores sundae, which was delightful. Note - the graham is more of a crumble...not a dust and not bit chunks. I'm not sure how this is made, and I probably don't want to know, but it was nice because the graham flavor didn't overwhelm the somewhat subtle marshmallow. Their chocolate malt flavor is one of my favorites, I need to bookmark it in my calendar so I don't miss it! During the last visit the 2-person team wasn't very efficient (in fact they lost our order and we had to wait for about 20 minutes to get ours made). I won't take any stars off because that's likely a one-time thing, and it was a nice day so I didn't mind sitting outside awhile longer.

Great frozen custard. A step up from ice cream. Free samples unless they recognize you as a regular freeloader. Chocolate is hard to beat.

Hands Down the best in the ice cream frozen custard category.. Made with the freshest ingredients and top with real fruit... Always a must when we are in the capital hill area.. Stop by believe me you will be coming back for more

I had the dark chocolate ice cream and it was great. Nice simple and clean flavor, wasn't too dark though. Seating is not very plentiful but the staff is pretty friendly. The toppings here are pretty cool. The ice cream is definitely really creamy as people say. I haven tried any of the special flavors but they sound pretty cool. They have a lot of custom sundaes you can order which seemed overwhelming at first but you can make your own custom so that's fine too. Overall, what can you say about ice cream other than that it is great?

    (4)
  • Alisha W.

Affogato!!! I'm a huge fan. Espresso plus vanilla frozen custard perfectly blends aromatic and bitter coffee with super creamy and nicely sweet custard. I can never have normal espresso again. I'm perpetually checking their calendar so that i can make sure to go back for their best flavors. *Btw their raspberry flavors are AMAZING - raspberry fudge, raspberry mocha. These flavors are so good, they easily convince me to stay at home on Friday night just to indulge and eat. (LIKE I need more of a reason to do that anyway ;) I have brought their frozen custard to friends' houses as dessert, and everyone has loved it! I always have a couple pints at home, and when guests come over, they have also loved it. Bottom line: **Highly Highly Highly recommended!**

  • Carmen Q.

Helpful staff, cheap dessert, cool flavours, open late. It's great! Still not really sure what custard is, but it is definitely something that stands out when I search on Yelp. I'm serious when I say the staff was helpful, we went through a painful interaction of what we were ordering because we were being confusing, and they were great about it. We just got some chocolate and vanilla with fudge and called it a day. Wasn't too expensive and a scoop to share between the two of us was a perfect amount of dessert.

  • Bahar A.

Small but sweet. The cookie blitz is light and chocolatey. Just want a bigger size....

  • Samara S.

So freaking good. I'm talking straight crack. We got the muddy buddy (I think that's what it was called), which consists of a perfectly cooked brownie with peanut butter, chocolate syrup, vanilla custard and whip cream. That thing disappeared in seconds :). The service was friendly and super quick as well. If you need a sugar fix or just want to treat yourself, try this place! So yummy!

Frozen Custard is almost unreal to me. How can it be so smooth and creamy? I'm so happy a friend introduced me to Old School Frozen Custard a while back. They have vanilla and chocolate everyday (espresso too?) as well as a special flavor. The special flavor when we went was COOKIE BUTTER. We ended up getting a large sundae with two scoops of cookie butter, one scoop of espresso, almonds, brownies, and whipped cream. The cookie butter flavor is amazing. For those that have had Trader Joe's cookie butter ice cream...Old School's is much better! The texture is much more smooth and creamy and the flavor is spot on. My only gripe was that the temperature was too high so it was too melty...i wanted it more solid. I think it was more melty because it just came out of the churner, but I feel like they should get it to the right temperature before serving it. The espresso had a good strong coffee flavor and was just the perfect temperature! There is a small amount of seating but the shop isn't too busy so its just fine. I wish they sold the frozen custard in paper cups not plastic drink cups...I really don't understand that. The plastic cups just don't feel right. Also, the sundae is built vertically and is harder to eat that way. Regardless of the temperature issues and cup issues, I love Old School Frozen Custard and will keep coming back over and over and over again!

  • Lemme K.

This was awesome. The service was good and staff was friendly. We ordered the cookie blitz and the sampler which included chocolate, vanilla, chocolate peanut butter and strawberry cheesecake in a waffle cone. He accidentally added almond to the sampler and was gonna remake it but I just took it cause I like almond :). Frozen custard is super creamy and smooth, and pretty rich. Taste similar to Soft serve ice cream but better. Would come back to try the cookie sandwich is apparently a new item!!!!

  • Craig M.

The custard wasn't bad. The service was very good, they were very nice and patient especially with my younger kids.

    (3)
  • Diane W.

Not bad though I found it a little too sweet. That may seem like a silly thing to say about a frozen custard place, but I ordered a sundae, which is the size of a solo cup, and having that much of a sweet thing without anything to balance it out is a little too much

  • Deborah S.

Love this custard! I like the limited menu unlike some other yelpers. Of course, I like Dick's limited menu too. I enjoy not having to think about what to order, and never have to worry that it won't taste good. Unlike some other pet inspired ice cream shops who shall go unamed, I prefer to eat a frozen treat that doesn't have some crazy weed or savory bit added to it's creamy goodness. Anywhoo, I love the dark chocolate and I am obsessed with the lemon curd. I like that I can split flavors and the homemade waffle cones are good enough to eat on their own. Friendly staff every visit and I can find parking easily since it is a little outside the rest of the Capitol Hill parking nightmare. Yummy!

Old School Frozen Custard is unbelievably good. It is, as good as all of the hype leads you to believe. Yes, I know, I understand, but yes, it is that good. My husband surprised me on Saturday with a trip here for the first time, and I love custard, and grew up on Leon's and Kopp's from the Midwest. If you have never had it before, think of it as a richer, eggier, smoother ice cream, almost like a gelato but meltier and creamier - if that makes sense. The two girls that were working were both nice. They were low-key, not aggressive or over-the-top, while still being friendly, which was nice. My husband and I shared a Muddy Buddy, which was the right thing to do. This thing is kind of intense, as in, next time, we might pack a thermos full of milk to drink this pup down, and yes, there will be a next time, and no, I am probably not exaggerating. It was a Homemade Brownie, topped with thick peanut butter, creamy chocolate and vanilla custard, hot gooey fudge and whipped cream. It was sosososo good. We'll be back, Concretes and that Cold Front are calling to me.

Yasss! I have never been disappointed here. They have the best flavors. (Orange creamsicle is my fave.) and service is quick and friendly.

  • Rebekah E.

I ordered a custom sundae on a brownie, and she gave me it blended shake, brownie and all. So, I went back up and explained to her that I wanted it to look like my friends with the ice cream on the brownie, not blended in. And then she puts the brownie on the bottom of the cup and blends everything else together and puts it on top? It didn't make sense but I didn't want to bother her a second time... All I wanted was to eat the brownie and the ice cream together in a dish But my friend's turned out nice so maybe I'll try again another time!

Before this experience, I had only had frozen custard on the other half of the country and had pretty much given up hope on finding it here. When my hairstylist of all people recommended Old School, I decided to give it a shot. Pros: creamy. Creamy. Yum. Cons: small flavor selection pros: all flavors were great I settled on classic vanilla with hot fudge and cherry sauce, which was so good I came back the next day for the exact same thing. Yum.

  • Trina D.

When it comes to frozen treats, I'm a huge fan of frozen custard. There's something about adding eggs to food that makes it, sing. Yes, sing. The flavors at Old School aren't just run of the mill either. Sure they have chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, but they have apple strudel, orange creamsicle, and chocolate peanut butter cup too. My friend and I shared a small apple strudel which had all the makings of a pastry yet in frozen custard form. It tasted fresh, cinnamon-y, and oh-so-delicious. They are open late too so you can have that late dessert if you're so inclined.

  • Jared B.

Oh man. I'm kinda mad at Old School for a few reasons. They are always offering fancy dishes that sound too good to pass on when I intend on finally getting just vanilla custard. Peanut butter, hot fudge, a brownie, AND custard? Come on guys, I could be dieting! Should! As much as I love Old School, and the frozen custard they sell, I've always felt that their prices were a little higher than the value delivered. It's a special treat that I only cash in on for special occasions because of that, but I'd love it to be a staple. I'm sure my thighs disagree. The serving area takes up the majority of the store, there are a few tables inside and a few more outside, but this isn't a spot to hang out forever at. Sometimes it's pretty busy, but there's something special about the texture of frozen custard that makes it worth the wait. Especially when it gets un-rainy out. What's that called? It makes my skin red and crave rich, creamy frozen treats while I stroll around in it. Summer?

Yes! Finally custard in Seattle! The employee was so helpful navigating me through and options and made some good suggestions. Ended up with the Homegrown. Simple and delicious! I'll be back here next weekend.

    (5)
  • Mike G.

I had the HomeRoom with one scoop of vanilla and one chocolate. It was delicious. I could eat that every night, but I shouldn't. My significant-other had the Teachers Pet, but was disappointed. It wasn't like a frappuccino, it was more like a slurpie. The employee described it the other way around which set different expectations. It was too icey and not enough creamy smoothness. 4 stars because it was good, and now know what not to order.

I spent seven wonderful years en route to my doctorate at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. I have been to Michael's more times than I can count. I know frozen custard. And this, this my friends, this is frozen custard. The turtle sundae is simply too much to dream. Three visits here in five days in Seattle and I might not be done. Worth the cost of the flight from Calgary.

Okay sweet tooth fans.. here's my dirty little secret.. I really don't like ice cream! I know, I know! You're probably going to stop reading now, and be completely anti all my reviews, but it is what it is! I just don't like how ice cream is soft and melts.. if I do eat ice cream, I like it super frozen enough to chew!! I know i just sent shivers down your spine! :) As for OSFC, I was a fan! It was thick in consistency, and full of flavor! Creamy, but not overly milky! Love how it wasn't fast to melt either! I kept it old school and stayed with vanilla.. love the flavor! For such a simple thing like vanilla, it kept my palette satisfied, craving for that next bite! As for the price, I was not a fan of that... I thought it was a little overpriced for what you get.. but hey, that's the common theme you get with dessert places these days!

I had my first experience with frozen custard when I stopped here a couple of days ago, and boy am I glad that I resisted the temptation to just head to one of the usual ice cream spots on the hill! Frozen custard is smooth, creamy, fresh, and essentially impossible to hate. They offer a few staple flavours (think chocolate and vanilla) everyday, and have a rotating daily special flavour. As my luck would have it, the special during my visit was salted caramel pecan! I am an absolute sucker for anything with salted caramel in it, so suffice to say I was in heaven. They didn't skimp out on the nuts either. My boyfriend got their strawberry shortcake sundae, which came with fresh strawberries and a generous scoop of the vanilla frozen custard. Our conclusion? No matter what you get here, you can't go wrong.

  • Gina P.

This frozen custard has a smooth eggy yumminess which I quite liked!:) Having never had frozen custard, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, and found that I really enjoyed the smoothness of this ice cream. It seems to freeze a bit softer so one feels rushed to eat it fast before it melts, which is no problem at all because it's so delicious anyway!:) I got the turtle sundae which was awesome!

    (4)
  • Jenna P.

A DELICIOUS TREAT! The inside was cute, clean, and the custard was so GOOD! Not meantion the nice young man. I wish they had more flavors/toppings but thats not even really a concern with how delicious their custard is by itself.

  • Allison P.

Yummy yummy yumm! I walk by this place every day on my way to work and never went in. But that all changed today! And Now I have to restrain myself from going in every day on my way to work!! They have so many yummy looking sundaes it was hard to pick just one. And the huge calendar of their rotating flavors made me want to come back everyday!! The home room was perfect amount of vanilla and chocolate. Also tried the smore's sundae totally amazing!! I can not wait to be back to taste more delightfully rich yummy frozen custard!!

    (5)
  • Marian W.

This place has amazing custard! It's light and not heavy at all (which always puts me off ice cream/frozen yogurt). I tried the "Cheerleader" and it was really delicious; strawberries, white chocolate and vanilla custard- what could get better? It's pretty pricey for what it is though (~$6 for the Cheerleader), but I'd go back and get one to share :)

    (4)
  • Katy C.

When I first heard "frozen custard" I was not looking forward to having it. But once I had it, it was one of the best things ever. Creamy, flavorful, and can't stop eating it. I had tried three flavors, vanilla, chocolate, and the special banana cream pie (this even had bits of graham cracker crust! When you are in town, go eat frozen custard, you'll love it. Also they have flavor of the day.

  • Annette L.

I love ice cream and I grew up selling frozen custard in my small country town back east. This is not exactly the taste I remember but they have a ton of fun flavors, fixin's, and it's a great spot for an after dinner treat.

  • Pauline O.

Oh man, one of the places I miss in Seattle! The frozen custard was soooo smooth & soooo good!! They have a huge calendar with the flavors of the day. We went on 4/24, so that was Georgia Peach day. The worker let us sample it & it was very good! I went with a Signature Sunday, Muddy Buddy, which had vanilla custard, brownie, peanut butter, & hot fudge. Yum yum yum! I should have bought a tub of custard to put in the freezer of our hotel. That would have been a great midnight snack! Next time I would just get the frozen custard by itself because I was pretty much ate just the custard in the Muddy Buddy.

  • Daniel S.

Went here after dinner. Ice cream was great. But it is so rich that after half way, I had to think about taking another bite.

  • Amanda S.

Came here late night for the first time and was super impressed. I never like the idea of frozen custard but my friend got me to give it a try~ Woohoo! It's awesome. Aside from frozen custard (with syrups and toppings~) you can also get sundaes and root beer floats.

    (4)
  • Glen L.

The decor is decidedly low key. No flashy tanks of liquid nitrogen to woo the crowds, because they don't need them. Just a high quality product with good ingredients. Which is exactly what they sell here.

    (5)
  • Vivian C.

My bougie tastes led me to believe I'd like Molly Moon's more, but I regularly make a longer trek out to Old School instead. I'm from a land of rich ice cream and custards--in comparison, Old School's offerings sometimes taste a little thin and runny to me. I like the rotating daily flavors (seems like 1-2 a day, with a new sorbet as well), and I particularly like the option to cut the fruit sorbet with an equal amount of vanilla custard.

    (3)
  • Jessica G.

WHY OH WHY did my friend bring me here? It's DELICIOUS. I already have a deeply unhealthy obsession with Molly Moon's, and now I have to add this place to the list. 500 lbs, here I come! I don't even know how to describe frozen custard. It's gelatinous, ice-creamy, frozen yogurty goodness. Only a thousand times better. And holy shizz, the s'mores sundae I had with the little graham cracker crunchies...*drools*....anything with CRUNCHIES makes this chubby's heart go pitter patter..I am definitely a fan. Every day has a special flavor. But I've only tried vanilla, chocolate, and mint chocolate chip (so f'ing good). I am told the Mint Oreo is the most amazing, and you can bet I shall be back to try it. Just like Molly Moon's, this place is PACKED even when it's freezing outside. The warm smell of fresh waffle cones seduces you inside, and then you just HAVE to sit down and have 4,000 calories of frozen custard delight. Remember Goldie Hawn's character in the beginning of "Death Becomes Her?" All pasty, fat, and 700 cats running around? That's going to be me...with tubs of frozen custard.

    (5)
  • Michelle L.

This place fulfilled my craving tonight...their vanilla custard is ON POINT. Thick, creamy, and delicious. I haven't tried any of their other flavors, but I sure would love to! Their calendar showed different flavors like Oreo cheesecake, Nutella, peanut butter chocolate, etc. Today I had the most perfect sundae: the Muddy Buddy. Vanilla custard, peanut butter, hot fudge, and whipped cream ALL ON TOP of a chewy brownie. I asked them to add peanuts just for a crunchy texture. Ugh it was perfect. Loved loved loved it. I will be sure to go back to try some more of their sundaes for sure!!! Next on the list will be the Recess and Turtle sundaes!

  • Caitlin H.

I was disappointed with the last waffle cone I got at the Fremont location, so I got a Homeroom this time. The brownie was soft and fresh, and the hot fudge was rich and gooey. The ratio of all the ingredients was perfect, and the dessert itself was just the right size. Old School is a must-try if you're looking for something exceptional in the world of frozen treats.

LOVE me some great frozen custard. The best we've had.

  • Vinky I.

I've never had frozen custard before so I guess I expected more from the hype. After my first scoop, I didn't really feel anything. Honestly, I had no idea what it was going to taste like and to my surprise, it tastes like custard....that's frozen/chilled into a pasty cream. Go figure. It felt like eat frozen cream. I was a little disappointed by their vanilla custard. Textures of custard aside, the flavor was just okay and nothing amazing. I'm sure if you love frozen custard, you'll love this place but it just wasn't for me. I think I prefer the texture of sorbet or regular ice cream. Their raspberry sorbet was decent but on the melty side.

I still find it odd to eat frozen custard in scoop form as opposed to soft serve. Soft serve is how I grew up with it and it is how I prefer to eat it, but when I get a craving for frozen custard, ultimately it doesn't matter. It was a warm Wednesday afternoon in Seattle and frozen custard popped into my mind. A quick phone search on Yelp pulled up this little gem. I took the long walk (didn't expect it to be quite that long, but that is ok) and by the time I reached my destination I was just about covered in sweat. Perfect time for something sweet. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and was asked if I wanted to try a taste of their custard of the day (Mud pie). Sure, why not? I had a scoop, but I'm a simple frozen custard kind of man. Vanilla, chocolate, done. That is what I wanted. I had a scoop of each and found a table near the front of the establishment. It definitely hit the spot. Both flavors were equally good and I was happy I came a bit out of way to get here. Service was with a smile and that is always nice. I think it was around $5 for two generous scoops. Not too bad. Now I have a frozen custard place to come back to the next time I'm up this way.

Spicy apple pie, creamsicle, cake batter. Oreo-effing-cheesecake. There are some flavours that actually make me mad that they don't offer all their flavours every day. But that's good. I'd be in here every day if they did. The staff is incredibly nice, the rotating flavours consistently are delicious, it's never too busy or crowded out the door, and they're open late. I've never been disappointed here. I will concur with many other reviews: there must be crack in these desserts somewhere.

  • Cori W.

Decent custard, I got the cold front which is a blend of the vanilla custard and the sorbet. Was a bit pricey for what it was, 4 people was ~$25. Service was little cold.

    (3)
  • Natalie G.

Yum!! When you go in you have the option of three flavors of custard. Vanilla, Chocolate, and flavor of the day. They you decide what to do with them. They have sundaes, parfaits, by itself, concretes (my favorite) and several other ways to eat your custard I usually lean toward a vanilla concrete with peanut butter cups, unless they have the peanut butter chocolate custard than I just get a bowl of that yum! They are a little pricey but worth a splurge every once in a while. Get something different than my usual choice of Molly Moons.

    (5)
  • Lauren B.

Recently tried their oreo mint, which was tasty but didn't knock my socks off (fake green mint freaks me out, and it was very, very light on oreo chunks). I really love ice cream but I try not to eat it too often, so when I do, it better be good! If I'm gonna splurge, I'd rather have: 1. Haagen-Dasz strawberry. Guilty pleasure 'cause it's a big company and not local or organic but it's sooo tasty. 2. Molly moon's Earl Grey sundae... mmm 3. milk shake. from anywhere. I love milkshakes. 4. I think I'm done, unless we're extending this list to Italian gelato. In any event, dis stuff was good, but for me at least, not worth the calories.

  • Emma F.

Delicious frozen, creamy sweetness!! This is what soft serve ice cream tastes like in your dreams. They have vanilla and chocolate frozen custard as well as a rotating daily flavor. They also have mix ins and toppings that you can get to make your own flavor. They also make fresh waffle cones with a little bit of cinnamon baked in, absolutely delicious!

Just meh. We've been there twice and been underwhelmed both times. First time got double scoops of chocolate and vanilla in a cup. The chocolate was pretty tasty but the portions were small. Tonight based on the previous just okay experience we went straight to the pints. Seemed promising - lots of interesting flavors to choose from and at $4.99, cheaper than Molly Moon's. We got the malted milk ball and english toffee. Problem? They sort of had no flavor. Not as rich as ice cream, and no discernible malt/toffee/chocolate tones. Also, there was no whoppers or toffee bits in at all, it was totally smooth. Huh? Anyways, not in a hurry to go back, especially when MM's or Hello Robin is an option instead.

My most favorite desert ever. It's like frozen yogurt only 100x better. I created my own sundae. Chocolate ice cream with hot fudge and bananas. If toppings were slightly cheaper I would've gotten strawberries too. And maybe could've avoided this chocolate overdose.

Kept on hearing about frozen custard but never tried. Stopped into Old School Frozen Custard today and oh my, this is the real deal. SUPER smoooooth texture. Really rich and but they say it has less fat than regular ice cream? What? Sure taste like it has twice the fat it's so good. Give them a try. Only down side is they only have a few flavor. And I don't normally count vanilla and chocolate as part of your list.

The custard itself was really good! I do wish they had more than the 2 options every day, but the vanilla was just fine anyways and made really well. Super creamy, perfectly sweet, and a good temperature. We had a "hiccup" where the one girl working in the shop completely forgot about our whole party... but she made up for it nicely (and they probably could have used a 2nd worker on a sunny Sunday afternoon anyways), so no harm done. Definitely a good stop to make!

So going out for dinner on a double date was a treat... but we were craving something sweet and decided on custard because we all realized (after lots of sake and ginger cosmos) that no one in our party had ever had custard. So out for custard we went. It was really good! Like I like frozen yogurt and ice cream, but I really liked the butteriness of custard in comparison to froyo and ice cream. This is was one of those places I would patron frequently if I loved above it, or across the street from it. But that isn't the case for me. So it was a pleasant experience having tasty custard. We had a group of four, and we ordered three custards to share and it was wayyy too much custard. I think we could have been satisified with two custards. We ordered the homeroom, muddy buddy, and the extra scoop one (I forget the name, Nina ordered it... that fatty...). Peter ordered the muddy buddy and I had custard envy. I wish I had gotten it! But mine had a brownie (I had homeroom) and it was tasty. If you want something that isn't froyo or ice cream, then I'd really try this place. It isn't expensive and it has free wifi for you students!

I should remove stars because I feel soo guilty after coming here. Whenever they have the lemon cookie flavor...take my advice and GET IT. Texture is rich and creamy and full of fresh flavors. Can't wait to try all the other flavors in moderation.

Ice cream: more fat (milk and cream) and air Frozen custard: additional ingredient of egg yolk Gelato: less fat (mostly milk) and little air Now that I know the difference I love OSFC even more. I know a lot of us hyperbolically talk about the addition of crack but I swear they do. I had it twice in one week and contemplated a detour during my evening commute for a third visit. OSFC be honest with us.. you put crack in it don't ya?

My first time coming here I went with the kids scoop of raspberry chocolate chip on top of a cake cone. DELICIOUS! I was able to taste the peanut butter cream, which was good too. The chick behind the counter was super friendly.

Home made waffle cones, open late, and unique menu selections make this place fantastic. One favorite name is the Locker Room... it has nuts, nuts, and more nuts, hahaha. Chocolate and vanilla custard is available every day, and there is always a flavor of the day. Be sure to write your flavor suggestion for the next month on the chalk board. I love the "concretes," basically a Blizzard but better. Another old favorite is the oreo milkshake - it is the best oreo milkshake anywhere. Yay! I'm a fan.

We saw this place in passing, and it was hot... had some good reviews,, plus I've been craving frozen custard for a long time so we stopped at this place. Vanilla Custard and blueberry cheesecake custard mix: the vanilla is butter... like seriously, its so smooth, rich and creamy, it feels like sweet cream with vanilla. Very good and very smooth. The blueberry cheesecake... what can I say. You ever have a no bake blueberry cheese cake? This is exactly how it tastes like, cheesecake, topping and all sans graham cracker crust. When I make blueberry cheesecake, the topping I use tastes identical to the blueberry topping in this frozen custard. It was crazy. It was an exact replica of my own blueberry cheesecake but in smooth custard form instead of thick sweet creamcheese form. The crazy thing was it kept tasting better and better with each bite. I think my only thing is I wish the vanilla custard had more vanilla in it. But wow if you never had the chance to try a good blueberry cheese cake, get this custard and its a good sub because it really does taste like someone juiced the flavor out of a cheesecake and put it into frozen custard.

Been here twice. Both times amazing! Everyone and their mothers have this hype about Molly Moon's. To be honest that place is overrated. Walk up the street a few blocks and try some Old School Frozen Custard. The ice cream here is super soft and creamy. Much easier to eat. They always have their standard chocolate and vanilla flavors and everyday there's a different special flavor. There are also several different Sundays which they offer. The gals that work there are super helpful at describing what everything tastes like. Would defititly recommend this joint to those that are craving ice cream!

  • Chandini S.

Strolled down here after cooking a labor-intensive dinner, and it was the perfect treat. It's so smooth, dense, and creamy. I topped one scoop of vanilla with hot fudge and graham crackers. He got a "muddy buddy" - 2 scoops of vanilla with a brownie, peanut butter, and hot fudge. We left on a complete carb high. And we think that is a very good thing.

On a sliding scale of cold treats, frozen custard is the most dairy-laden. Just to give you an idea if you're like me and can't really tolerate dairy/cream. That said, the custard here is really rich. They don't have a large selection of flavors by any means. I believe there is vanilla and chocolate, and then a daily special flavor, which you can look up on their calendar. But if you want to take a pint home, they have more flavors in the freezer available. I recall a scoop of frozen custard being relatively expensive, so it's not likely I'll be back here with any haste.

Mmmm...this place is awesome. I was a little nervous about trying frozen custard when I had a sure thing (ice cream) just a few blocks away, but my friend insisted so we went. I am SO glad we did. First of all, the people who work there are so nice and really helpful. I tried to customize my order (a Muddy Buddy), and they didn't bat an eyelash. The prices are more than fair for what you get. My Muddy Buddy was two huge scoops of DELICIOUS frozen custard, an enormous brownie, whipped cream, chocolate sauce and big swipes of peanut butter. Unbelievably delicious. For frozen custard virgins like me, it's a lot like ice cream but creamier and softer (a result of being a little less cold than ice cream). It's REALLY good, and even though it's less cold it actually doesn't melt right away like I thought it might. It stays at the perfect consistency for as long as it took me to eat it (about 15 minutes). They have a bunch of awesome sundaes, always flavors, and a special flavor every day. Parking is a little difficult because it's on Capitol Hill, but I've always been able to find something and if you're willing there's a pay lot right next door. ALSO, you'd think that in Seattle dessert places would be open late, but this one is one of the few that's open past 8 (closes at 10, 11 on weekends, during the summer). DEFINITELY worth a try. They also have free WiFi, but I was too busy shoving custard in my face to try it out.

My friend told me the difference between custard and ice cream / I can't remember what she said but I do know I enjoyed the custard here!

We just had tastes here since we were on the verge of diabetes at this point. They have vanilla, chocolate, and a special flavor every day. It's milwaukee-style and similar to Milwaukee's Frozen Custard around here, so we didn't go back.

    (3)
  • Melody P.

After dinner, we walked over there about a block away. However, it was too later. They already shut down their registry. Instead of going home and being disappointed, they offered free chocolate and vanilla custard. I was really happy. I didn't taste the special flavors in the store, but I told myself that one of these days I will make it back and try :-)

frozen goodness! Located in the 'frozen triangle' as I call it (Molly Moon's and Bluebird rounding out the other corners) area of capitol hill, this little place dishes out some awesome stuff! The cornerstone of their menu is simple vanilla and chocolate, each day featuring a flavor of the day. Yesterday was blueberry which amazing! Real whole blueberry mixed into the stuff! Other flavors I saw up in coming were things like strawberry banana, birthday cake, keylime cheese cake, orange creamsicle...you get the idea! Creative, if not intruging flavor mixes that will keep me coming back for more. The custardy flavor is slightly more eggy then say ice cream and its soft like soft serve ice cream. The location is great and say walking distance from Cal Anderson Park. Already going through frozen custard withdrawal writing this review!

How do you know when Old School Frozen Custard has successfully captured the theme of those days in school? #1. Like students in school, spelling is definitely something that needs some work. The flavor of the day when we were there was "Hawii Coconut." #2. The names of their sundaes brought out the inner child of full grown adults -- I suppose it's hard to not giggle and snicker uncontrollably when The Locker Room Sundae contains "nuts, nuts, and more nuts." #3. Like the days of school, having ice cream was a special event -- it was a treat. Ice cream on a school day was like the best thing ever. Everybody talked about it. Old School Frozen Custard is no exception -- they're definitely special and one-of-a-kind (well sort of, since they have two locations) and their custard is definitely worth gabbing to your friends about.

  • Nathan R.

Gotta say: kinda just okay. Don't get me wrong: it's sweet and creamy and all that, but I dunno. Maybe I built it up in my mind?...I mean Custard, there's just something about that word: Custard, it's just gotta be good! But, alas- kinda underwhelmed, especially for the price. Hard to beat Snoqualmie Ice Cream...there, yeah- I said it.

  • Lea A.

Who needs frozen yogurt when you can get frozen custard!? Rich and creamy, it's the way ice cream should taste like. I've been there twice now, and I really like the idea of rotating main flavours. I feel like I struck gold both random times I went since their featured flavours were mud pie and hazelnut respectively. Yum! Bonus points for being one of the few dessert places in town actually open late (10pm)!

I have been meaning to stop into Old School Frozen Custard for quite awhile, and today I finally took the plunge that I have been holding out for, and I dove in on the perfect day! Today they have Raspberry as the flavor of the day. As much as I love Yogurtland, there is just something so splendidly special about frozen custard. It's not quite ice cream, not tart enough to be yogurt. It's a frozen treat to be desired. When I walked in I thought I'd just stick with classic vanilla, since it's the only one they guarantee as gluten free, but then the gentlemen behind the counter went and looked up the ingredients for the raspberry to check and see if it had gluten in it. Awesome! So here I am after having happily frolicked in the sun with a single serving of raspberry frozen custard in my belly. So go, stop reading this, and go now!

I had the smores frozen custard sundae and it was good, but I wasn't necessarily amazed. It was a bit too sweet for me and maybe frozen custard just isn't my cup of tea. It was good, though, but I prefer good ol' fashioned ice cream.

  • Manoj B.

Only has a few flavors but they all taste great and there's still a number of sundaes offered. Good smooth texture and rich flavor.

It is always a struggle to choose between Old School and Molly Moon's, so I try to find a way to visit both of them (no, not in the same night). I *love* the fact that they not only rotate flavors, but that they push the envelope waaay beyond any custard shop that I have ever visited. Caramel Macchiato, Chocolate Nutella, Malted Milk Balls, Peanut Butter & Banana... the list goes on and on!

    (5)
  • Yimeng W.

Decent, old fashioned frozen custard! Small sampling of your choice when you come in, and they have vanilla, chocolate and a flavor of the day. I had 'let's split the joy!', their version of banana split which is pretty laaarge and solid. Also had a peach smoothies, which is a flavor I don't run into every day! Self served water and free wifi. Pretty cool, overall!

Rich and creamy. Got the peanut butter and chocolate and it was delicious. The girl working here was very friendly. Only critique i'd have is the prices are pretty darn steep.

You have to be kidding me with this. Why do we not have this in CA??? Frozen custard in 3 flavors: VANILLA, CHOCOLATE, and a flavor of the day. Ours was: TARAMISU and omgggggg it was insanely delicious. The flavor changes everyday and they display the calendar on the chalkboard, so don't miss out on your favorite flavor! We went after dinner so we got one giant BANANA SPLIT with all 3 flavors. [see pic] BEST FROZEN CUSTARD EVER.

    (5)
  • Leslie P.

They always have vanilla & chocolate frozen custard, then the third flavour rotates. We opted for a scoop of the chocolate. It was rich, creamy, chocolatey, sweet. Just yum!

    (4)
  • Jessica M.

Wow! Best frozen custard I have EVER had. I may be biased because it was also the first place I ever tasted the stuff, but I think it is amazing. Fresh baked cones daily, along with a flavor of the day beside their usual chocolate and vanilla flavored custards. Tons of add ins to make your own flavor combinations. It gets packed and there can be quite a wait, but it is definitely worth it!

    (5)
  • Josh T.

In the grand scheme of desserts, frozen custard isn't my fav. Even of frozen treats, I prefer froyo. So given that, the frozen custard here is very rich and quite tasty. I don't know what makes custard different but this stuff is rich and thick and they warn you that there are eggs in it so.... They always have dark chocolate and "perfect vanilla" and a rotating flavor. The rotating flavors are usually executed very well, I've had banana cream pie which had delightful salty bits of "crust" mixed in, toasted coconut which was the best coconut flavored anything ever, maple salted pecan which was a little overly maply, Georgia peach was yummers... damn have I really been here that many times? That explains a lot...

I really shouldn't have gone to Peaks Frozen Custard first. My bad. The capacity is that of a Molly Moons = practically non-existent. But the beauty? Only one child on the premises, all the adults came to play after work! Same concept of vanilla (only 100% vegan option), chocolate and a rotating flavor of the day. And it totally meets the checklist of a Seattle joint: biodegradable utensils, bowls and cups. But of course, why have it any other way? *hugs a tree* Now my gripe, sundaes do NOT belong in cups. Absolutely defies all the rules of ice-creamdom. I don't like the handle of my environmentally friendly spoon to be covered in fudge/syrup before I can even reach the custard part. And it's near impossible to share! Surface area folks, that's the ticket - sundaes belong in bowls where you can poke and scoop as you please getting a perfect pairing of custard/toppings with every bite.

When you want to indulge in dessert on or around Capitol Hill there is no place like Old School. Every flavor melts in your mouth. Friendly people too. Chocolate is sublime but vanilla with poured espresso also a favorite. Love this place.

  • Stef M.

I stopped in as part of a Savor Seattle tour of Cap Hill and was able to try vanilla, mint chocolate chip, and vanilla. The flavors were nice, but I guess frozen custard just isn't creamy enough for me (they use milk and egg yolks instead of cream, which is why it's not technically ice cream). I might stop in again sometime and try a sundae or something - I smelled the delicious smell of waffles while I was there because they were making waffle cones to order! The flavors of the day might be a little hit-or-miss, too. I'm not a big fan of mint chocolate chip (hate that fake green color!) so I'd hit it up on a day when there's a more interesting flavor o' the day. The decor inside is fun - reminds me of being back in elementary school! For February/Valentine's Day, they had an anatomically correct drawing of a heart on their chalkboard :)

  • Ryan N.

Daily custard flavor specials. Vanilla and Choco 24/7/365. Super rich and creamy (sometimes a little bit toooo sweet for my liking, especially with the extra caramel and fudge). I like to keep it simple....Homeroom special (brownies + vanilla custard). Open late, minimal seating, but oddly enough, never crowded when I go. QUICKTIP: 10% coupon online

  • George G.

Yep! Old school, as in grade school - memories of fun time-outs come to mind every time I enter this place. I'd pick some creamy, calmly sweet vanilla strawberry yogurt, sit quietly on a corner, prop my elbows on a grade school table, then nonchalantly lick away while perusing the rest of the yogurt menu at the chalkboard on one of the walls. I can do nothing else but smile after that.

  • Emily A.

I love this place!! I usually go with one of their scrumptious sundae options and I have not been let down so far -- s'mores has been my favorite. They always have their standard chocolate and vanilla custard, but they also have a custard of the day! This is an awesome option, and the calendar on the wall gives you a heads up for all the flavors to come -- easy to plan ahead for the ones you want to try :)

The best custard I have ever tasted.

  • Jay S.

First, my credentials: I have worshipped at the temple of Ted Drewes. I have gorged at Sheridan's in Vancouver WA - the best custard I'd found on the West Coast. I have tried many frozen custards across the US, esp the Midwest...plus, if you see me, you can tell I've eaten a lot of frozen treats... Old School is excellent frozen custard. You'll find many divisions among the faithful - you can see them in the comments: soft serve vs. scoop, plain vs. mixed w/ stuff, eggy vs. milky. This is all splitting hairs at this point. Seattle has REAL frozen custard now, and it is good, it is reasonably priced, and Old School gives you an idea of what ordering frozen custard on the East Coast or Midwest is like. Concretes (which are essentially "blizzards"), plain cones or sundaes - these are the basic forms and Old School has them. I found the mouth feel true to what good frozen custard should be like - which is, it almost doesn't melt right away - it's that fatty. We can quibble about eggy-ness, firmness, flavor, etc...and I would be happy to debate...but this IS frozen custard. If you have a craving for the real deal, it is finally here. I love OLD SCHOOL!

  • Chris M.

I am an expert in the frozen dairy desert genre, with extensive training and research during my high school job at Dairy Queen. That said, I know people's tastes in frozen treats vary greatly so maybe not everybody can love smooth frozen custard expertly made the old school way. Personally, I like custard & ice cream that is very creamy and not too airy. Also I don't like anything that tastes like artificial flavoring or janky flavor combinations like bubble gum or bacon. Old School does custard the right way...and to be honest I'm not sure if I've ever had bad custard anywhere, so the right way must be pretty common. Chocolate = muy bien, creamy and not fake-tasting Vanilla = excellently creamy & excellent with strawberries on top Flavor of the Day = i've had 4 and they've all been fantastic. Decent serving sizes and a location next to cool shoe store (Rock Paper Scissors) make this a 5 star Capitol Hill experience.

    (5)
  • Mikiko T.

They are sweet and creamy, but I feel like there is nothing special about their product. I have tried several "flavor of the day" such as Oreo Cheesecake (I think that's what it was called), Mint Chocolate Chip, Strawberry and Malt Balls. But none of them had very strong taste, it almost seemed like they added some color and flavoring to their vanilla base and call it flavor of the day. Their strawberry had no real strawberry chunks, Mint chocolate chip was artificial neon-green color. I go there occasionally whenever I am in the area, but I don't think it's worth the hassle if you have to travel to visit the store.

    (3)
  • Jarrod L.

The number of flavors is small, but the quality is excellent. Overall, I'd say it's my favorite ice cream chain in the city.

  • Jen B.

I am not satisfied, no siree! Pretty good as far as taste goes, but the selection wasn't the greatest if you aren't a "sweet" person. I don't want all that junk in my ice cream, this should be reserved for Dairy Queen Blizzards. I had a vanilla shake, my friend the banana. I also had a scoop of vanilla in a waffle cone. This is where I would say that they're great, the cone was fresh, hot and with a hint of cinnamon. Too bad their vanilla wasn't more like their cones...I'd go back. I really felt like they were missing something special: flavors that weren't crowded with chunks of candy bars?

  • Tan Lo S.

I like this place, but it doesn't beat Peak's Frozen Custard. I love their menu items and they are really good. They have funny school names and they have great service. I think it's decent priced and it is fulfilling!

    (4)
  • Nicole L.

Mmm, frozen custard. I'd thought you were lost to the wilds of Wisconsin, but thankfully I found you back in Seattle. Better than that, you come with a huge blackboard full of menu selections, a friendly staff that immediately asks if you want to try the flavour of the day, and a take-out case full of various pints. Creamy, smooth, soft, what more do you need?

    (5)
  • Masha J.

Very clear menu, very clean establishment. Parking can be a bit tricky, but it's not difficult to find. I ordered a vanilla frozen custard with reese's pieces mixed in. My brother ordered a cake batter frozen custard with reese's pieces. Personally, the cake batter was a little bit too sweet for my taste, but both were delicious! The staff there (only one girl was working) was very helpful and always had a smile on her face. We chatted with her for a little bit and she genuinely seemed to love working there (she told us that she had been working basically since it's inception a few years ago -- that's dedication!). They have a calendar on their wall that lists what their special flavors will be throughout the rest of the month.

    (5)
  • Nathalie T.

The custard--or what I would call soft ice cream--is delicious here, and it doesn't tend to have long, long lines like Molly Moon's. They have chocolate and vanilla frozen custard every day, and a flavor of the day every day. Their website has a calendar with the daily flavors. Try the peanut butter chocolate...oh, oh, oh, soooo good. On days when I'm not crazy about the flavor of the day, I get my old standby: vanilla with hot fudge. Creamy goodness! You can also get a concrete here, aka Blizzard, filled with whatever you want. Make the trip. You'll be happy!

  • Sheila L.

I never ever had frozen custard before.. until I came to Old School. :) It was highly recommended to me by my good friend, ann w. so since I was in the area I took advantage of going there. First time I got overwhelmed with all their choices so I settled for a old-fashioned root beer float (my fav!). I know.. so boring but I didn't know which combo I craved the most at the time so I knew I'll be back. Second time going back was just past week where I had a dealpop coupon for $16 worth of yummy goodness! So going in I knew I had to buy two of their pints. Choosing was the hard part... so ended up with tiramisu and cookies&creme. Then to top it off I also chose one of their combos with brownies and their well-known vanilla custard and hot fudge all over. Mmmm it was soooo good!! Their vanilla custard is my fav by far. So nice and creamy. I tried out the pints I chose and both were also really good!!

  • Tim C.

The custard here is good, don't get me wrong. Great texture, neat rotating menu of flavors, etc. The price is what gets to me. Especially when you can get frozen yogurt that's just as good (perhaps not exactly the same texture and consistency as custard, but in my opinion, just as tasty) at Yogurtland, which isn't too far away - off Broadway. Sure, if I'm in the mood for custard, this place is it. But more often than not, Yogurtland satisfies my urges for sweets at a more reasonable price.

  • Susy W.

I had to try frozen custard to myself and see what the hype was about. First off, I did like that there was virtually no line (ahem, Molly Moons...). I have to agree the signage was a little confusing in terms of flavors... BUT, they do have a good variety of sundaes which works out too... well, not if you bring somebody along who is indecisive. I wish I grew up knowing how to share, because when I got my Cheerleader sundae (vanilla custard with white chocolate sauce and strawberries) I could barely get through one scoop before I thought "ENOUGH!!!" It's good, but really really rich. Almost painfully rich. My three eating companions agreed and couldn't finish their sundaes either. A must try one time, but I don't think I'll go out of my way to eat it again.

  • Jack R.

Two words- TRY IT! You will be so glad you did. I can't say enough good things about this place. The custard is so rich, smooth and creamy. To die for! I highly recommend. (also, try the pies)

We went here really late after going to a concert across the street. The staff was super nice, very funny they were singing and cleaning. I love a place with a happy vibe like that. The custard was amazing. I had the Playground (chocolate custard, with gummy worms, Oreo crumbles, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream) which I don't even want to know how many calories is in it because it was AWESOME! The portion size is good for the price especially with all the toppings. The fun way they put the sundae together was a treat too. The gummy worms were hidden in the custard! I'm not on Capital Hill often because but next time I'm down there I would defiantly like to go back to Old School.

  • Leah B.

What else can be said about this place? It's yummy, it's frozen, it's custardy! We never seem to try their different flavors, but just stick to the pre-designed sundays. I swear we've tried them all. Keep doin' what you're doin' guys!!

To quote Meg Ryan, "Yes... yes... YES! YES! YES!" This place is so amazingly good that I actually found myself driving (safely) but well over the speed limit to get there just before closing one night. Not a wise decision, but hey, for this stuff, I'd probably trample my own grandmother. Okay, obviously I'm KIDDING (haters, drop your pens before replying). But their custard is wonderful. Heavenly simple. Devilishly creative. A fellow Yelper says they must include crack as a secret ingredient. I don't care... gotta have some. Now. And even better than the star flavors making a once-or-twice a month cameo, or the endless possibilities of flavor combinations using their sauces and "toppings" (is it a topping if its blended into the custard, I dunno?) is the fact that you can get the custard in a handmade, fresh, waffle cone! I highly recommend this platform for the best custard experience. Fortunately (and unfortunately) they are far away from my home in Bellevue. But our family now has a Sunday post-church ritual to drive "the long way home" to get our fix. Confession. Absolution. Custard. Got to get it in the right order. Still reading this? Get going! This review isn't worth the wait. Go!

I love the custard here. everything here is good. on a Friday night you can watch people dressed in leather collars and leashes leave out of the S+M shop next door. They are alway friendly here at the custard shop and KNOW what you want!!!

Silky, silky smoooooooth custard, good enough to meet or even beat my favorite, Ted Drewe's in St. Louis. If you're not familiar, Ted's is one of those local food "things" that is actually worth a detour or trip for, rather than just something hyped by locals. But Old School does just as good a job with its custard. My only complaint is that they only offer three flavors each day - vanilla, chocolate, and a rotating flavor. You can check their calendar to see which rotating flavor is up - ours was juicy lemon, which was good (but I would prefer more tart) and some of the upcoming sounded even better. It's a bit of a walk for someone staying downtown, but if you want to explore Capitol Hill and you're walking anyway, this is a nice refreshing stop. Now...do they sell Christmas trees in the winter like Ted's does?

My favorite custard place in the world! I'm a real fan of Old School, I even have their iPhone app. Why woud a custard shop need an app? Well, you have to keep track of their daily specials. You can always get the wonderful vanilla and chocolate, which are nothing to sneeze at, but if you're like me you'll pick a favorite special and plan your visits around them. For me it's the Orange Creamsicle and Malted Milk Ball that will cause me to stop on the way home, but on a warm summer night, a rarity here in Seattle, it's worth stopping no matter what the FOD is. Staff has always been amazing, patient and funny. (PS If you get the orange creamsicle ask for a sprinkle of chocolate chips on top. YUM!)

It goes without saying that the product here is really good. I love the eggy richness of frozen custard, both in terms of texture and flavor. This place makes their frozen custard in house, which is always a good start with me. They also switch up the flavors on a daily basis, which leads to some pretty imaginative creations. I also like the schoolhouse aesthetic, and the fact that the chalkboard announces future flavors well in advance. Service was great, too. I am indeed a fan.

Best. Frozen. Treat. in. Seattle. 1. Creamiest, silkiest, most melt-in-your-mouth treat you'll get in Seattle. 2. Hybrid between soft serve ice cream + gelato + custard in terms of texture. 3. Awesome "flavor of the day" flavors. Changes on an almost daily basis. E.g., Cafe Vitta coffee, cherry vanilla, Oreo, Reese's caramel, Hawaiin coconut, etc. 4. Awesome prices. Just $3 for a single scoop. 5. Toppings. Lots of toppings. OMG, so good.

Delicious and great selection. The sundaes are expensive, but the regular cone is cheap: 2.75 for a single scoop waffle cone. My husband's fave sundae is the peanut butter/fudge/brownie sundae. Their sundae's beat the pants of Molly Moon's. Looking forward to the flavour of the day every day!

I seriously think that there is crack in the waffle cones. I know, this sounds unlikely but nothing else makes sense as I crave them like nobodies business. No one would guess but I'm a purist at heart when it comes to frozen custard, nothing suits me better than vanilla in a warm waffle cone so it's immediately melty. Sigh, my love of frozen custard has become serious and I am ready to take it to the next level.

I am not a froyo (a la Pinkberry) fan, so when I go for a tasty frozen treat frozen custard easily hits the spot. Old School does it pretty well, but as for there signature creations, I was not overly impressed. Your basic run of the mill chocolate-lover's combos. My first taste of frozen custard was Caliche's in New Mexico with their huge menu and huge portions (not that you need a huge portion of frocus) so I can't help but make them my gold standard. And honestly, compared to Caliche's, Old School gets a B in my book.

You know how some places are just so awesome that they put you at a loss for words? Yep, this was definitely one of them. I was actually planning to go to Bluebird down the street, but there was an entire flight of steps to get in, so along I went to Old School Frozen Custard. They stick to three flavors a day (which you're allowed to sample) - vanilla and chocolate every day, with one flavor that rotates daily (see them here: loveoldschool.com/calend… ). A flat $3 will land you a simple hefty 4oz scoop of custard in a bowl or cone - I suggest splitting it with a buddy, because this stuff is rich. But what can I say aside from this frozen custard being hands down awesome? The kind of awesome that puts an inane smile on one's face and (almost) makes one want to giggle like a little school girl. Rich, but not overwhelmingly so, and ohhh-so-smooth. That said, it's heavy (and hefty) enough that you might start to feel it about half way through, so again, share the love with a friend. Add super friendly staff on top of all this, and you get the first dessert joint to earn five stars from me in Seattle. Oh, and if you have a smart phone and fan/follow them on Facebook/Twitter at the counter, you get 10% off your order!

Flavors are delicious, and I love that they rotate them and post the calendar online. The peanut butter & chocolate flavor is simple but outstanding. I also tried one of their signature sundaes with just vanilla custard (the one with the brownie) and it was great. I'm looking forward to trying a "concrete" - their take on a Blizzard - sometime soon. Cap Hill has a lot of options for frozen dessert, but this one is definitely worth your time.

Upscale Froyo... yummy. I had the mountain berry flavor which was yummy, but needed more berries in it, because it became more of a vanilla flavor. Cute spot, with the yummy aroma of fresh waffle cones and great service.

Some of the best you can get! Since frozen Custard shops are not abundant in Seattle, this is as good as it gets. This place was recommended by a friend, and the custard is to die for! Uhh..huh...yup..!!! It can get busy so the wait is sometimes long. Price is a bit higher than regular ice cream, but it's well worth it. Try it out, you won't be disappointed.

We were introduced to this place by a Savor Seattle Food Tour. It is a great place to go and we went back and had some custard our last trip to Seattle. So much more creamy and flavorful than ice cream! They have chocolate and vanilla of course and then they have a flavor of the day. When we were there they had cookie dough. Yummy!! They also have pre-packed containers of other flavors in a freezer so you can have a lot of options. If you are in seattle or just in the area I highly recommend stopping to get a scoop ....or two!!

  • Trevin C.

Yes, it's true -- I went to this place 4 times over a 5 day period. It's *that* good. I have a serious addiction to frozen custard now. They have chocolate and vanilla every day, along with 1 flavor of the day. I very rarely get the flavor of the day, and instead go consistently for vanilla with hot caramel. My mouth is literally salivating as I write this.

Great product, a bit too sweet but delicious. Friendly staff, limited seating. First visit so we split a Recess sundae (vanilla custard, Reese's cups, fudge--skipped the caramel). Was satisfied after about four bites and my partner gladly finished off the rest. I'm still on a sugar high hours later.

Brilliant. A delicious idea with a friendly and helpful staff. Perfect on both a hot AND cold day! We had the 'locker room' with creamy vanilla custard and quadruple nuts! Then we just had to have another so we got "the Cheerleader," vanilla custard with strawberries and white chocolate. Next time I will try "Turtle" or chocolate.

I love frozen custard, and I do like this place. It's closer to our place than Peaks by Roosevelt square. They always have chocolate and vanilla with a 3rd rotating flavor. For frozen custard always get a smaller size than what you think you'd normally get. It's pretty heavy but it's totally worth it. I never really plan on coming here, it's more I just happen to be in the neighborhood. So sometimes I love the rotating flavor and other times I'm very disappointed by what it is. It comes down to personal choice on that but vanilla and chocolate are always good. Peaks in Roosevelt Square is better just in terms of choice, but Old School is still delicious and I'd recommend to everyone.

Excellent frozen custard. Rich, creamy, yet light and not too sweet. Much better than the various ice cream outlets that we tried in Washington. The vanilla, just by itself, was fantastic. There tend to be crowds, but everyone seemed friendly and willing to share table space.

It really baffles me that people bitch about the price - really, you're gonna complain about paying $2 versus $3 for a small cone/scoop? Chill out, eat your custard and next time buy your own at the QFC. Anyway, went back here for a sundae and man was is delicious. Again, I'm not a huge sweets or ice cream guy (no clue why this is called "custard," consistency is similar to Carvel) but this sundae was glorious - enough so I finished the entire thing! I felt somewhat guilty for engulfing the 9 billion calories but it was well worth it. And don't worry about the lines, sure they look daunting from the door, but it typically moves very quickly.

Two words...Muddy Buddy. Peanut butter, brownie, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, frozen custard...share this with someone or you'll hate yourself. Nice way to top off a dinner at Spinasse. The Muddy Buddy is a meal replacement.

I don't think frozen custard is sweeping Seattle which is a good thing because I don't want places like this to get too crowded. Alas, I fear it is too late. Hands down, the best and most creative place in Seattle to get frozen custard.

  • Samantha E.

There are plenty of places in Capital Hill to get your fix of sugar and Old School Frozen Custard is a real stand out spot. While most custard places change their flavor of the day every two days, Old School steps it up and changes it daily with tons of inventive and unique flavors. Plus, if you miss your flavor they have a freezer full of well priced cartons ready to go of past flavors. Anyway I got the brownie, peanut butter sundae (I forget the proper name) and it was absolutely to die for! Cute shop and really quality custard!

I have FALLEN in LOVE. Why do they not have this in the Bay Area! Frozen custard is BOMB! + It's like a cross between butter, cream, sugar, silk, and ... heaven. Take your time with this stuff, and the best thing is that is doesn't melt as fast! + The decor fits the name perfectly, they have a fun flavor calendar so you know what's coming up. - I just wish the lady that served us was as sweet as the frozen custard... a little stand-offish, but maybe she had a long day =/ - Beware, they charge for extra spoons

We were visiting Seattle & based on Yelp, we found this place. It was excellent! I've never tried this before & now I wish we had it in my home town. We shared the "recess" sundae and it was filling. The staff was welcoming and the place was very clean. I highly recommend giving this place a try.

Old School Frozen Custard is the best, Best, BEST frozen treat EVER! Better than any ice cream, better than any Froyo, even better than any Gelato, the flavor and consistency is just heaven, you don't need to get any more than just plain vanilla to know what I mean. I stopped here during my Seattle visit on my epic voyage ( KananAcrossAmerica.blogs… ) and ironically my friends and I stopped before dinner and I loved it! Places like Old School make me want to move back to Seattle ASAP! Line is a little long, but trust me it is totally worth it!

I still really like this place and think that the custard is exquisite (especially when the flavor of the day is cheesecake.) But the service gets to me! When this place was less popular and I asked for a cone with both chocolate and vanilla, I got it. But now when I ask for a cone with both chocolate and vanilla, I get an annoyed sigh with free eye roll, and am told "we can't do that." I roll my eyes at you OSFC because that sort of bullshit is just ridiculous.

I love all things sweet! Having lived nearby for years, I realized that I never tried Old School Frozen Custard so I stopped by the first chance I got. They have lots of interesting concoctions written out on a huge chalkboard. I went with the root beer float, and my bf had something with strawberries. My float was okay...seemed like something anyone can whip up at home. I felt like I was paying more for the "old school" root beer than the frozen custard. My bf's order was kinda weird. The strawberries were frozen and tasted old. Gross! As for the frozen custard itself, it was A-OK! It was like a smoother version of a Wendy's frosty. Truthfully, the ambiance was cool. I love the old school feel of coming into a dessert shop and sitting down to enjoy my treat. However, novelty aside, it was one of those places were I am glad to have tried it once but will probably not go back as often as my favorite dessert spot, D'Ambrosio Gelato.

This place was not old school at all. I expected to walk into a 80s diner style but instead it was all hip and eco friendly. What a let down. I suppose it would be consider old school in 20 years. Their frozen custard were cuslicious. Tasty little cold joy of fun. Most def go back again!

Awesome place. I've never tried frozen custard before and I'm glad I finally got to try Old School in Cap Hill. Frozen custard is a little different than ice cream. To me, it's a little smoother and not as cold. It almost has a velvety texture to it. I like that this place makes a different flavor everyday. The serving is a little small but I guess it's more about the quality than quantity (yeah right......I want more!). Seriously, the frozen custard tastes delicious and their ingredients make it all work together. Check out their online calendar to see if there's a flavor coming up that you'd like to try.

Flavors just didn't do it for me. I was super excited but then there was disappointment. I just can't help comparing it to my favorite place in New York City. I know its not the same but it was soooooooo gooooooddddd. Last time I was in New York I was there every other day.

Never have I ever been a dessert kind of person, but since moving to Capitol Hill, I have definitely reconsidered. Apart of this conversion has been due to Old School. Frozen custard, being something I had never heard of before Seattle, was truly an experience. Creamier than frozen yogurt yet without all the heaviness of ice cream, I fell in love with the thin line in between. The flavors are always delicious - vanilla being authentic and the chocolate not overbearingly sweet. My roommate, from Bonney Lake where Old School originated, insists on the Concrete, which is blended ice cream with toppings. Though I have never tried it, it looks like a pulmonary artery about to burst in all the best ways. With classics like Chocolate and Vanilla and a rotating schedule of new flavors, Old School is truly a trip through nostalgia with a reminder of the present.

I prefer Old School Custard to Molly Moon's hands down. Sure the flavors they offer may not be as daring as Molly Moon's but the flavors they do have are fantastico. I have enjoyed their root beer float - high quality root beer and super creamy vanilla custard - DEEEElicious. My boyfriend enjoyed the sundae with the shots of espresso. He dug it for sure since he is a true coffee fiend. I love the pints to take home too, my favorite being the cherry cheesecake. Oh man was that something nice to come home to over the course of a few days. I was so proud I made the pint last 4 days! GO ME! I really would like to try one of their pies since they keep calling to me from the case "Eat me, Stephanie! Celebrate the fact it's Thursday and EAT ME!" but I have managed to say no for now - mainly because I already have a cup of custard in my hands and my brain can't handle that much stimuli. Talk to the pie or eat my custard? Wait, is that even a legit question?! Eat the custard and shut up, brain. I bet those pies are good though. If I ever do get one, I will be sure to update my review. I enjoy the laid back atmosphere, the good flavors you can recognize (cheesecake, chocolate peanut butter, etc.) and the good and creamy custard. Just check out their flavor calendar on their site and plan your visit on your favorite flavor day. (I am already making the eyes at you, Banana Cream Pie day. Be ready...)

Yep, never had frocu or is it frotard? Didn't think it was anything really special. It just seemed like regular soft serve ice cream but a little bit eggier? I also didn't like how if you didn't come on the right day that you'd miss out on some of their other flavors other than vanilla and chocolate, their everyday standby's. I think their system of only having one flavor of the day leaves me sad. Options, where are the options?? I guess that's why it's called Old School. Tried their Recess sundae, $7 bucks for a sundae, pricey, but sizeable with lots of goopy chocolate sauce and lots of pieces of peanut butter cups but it was way too sweet for me. I'm not sure what I was expecting besides it being sweet, but perhaps the ratio of syrup/chocolate bits to vanilla was off. Not my cup of cream.

In walking distance of Piecoras, I was able to load my night with pizza and frozen custard! Stuck with the vanilla in the waffle cone and it was absolutely scrumptious! PLUS, the wait staff let customers come in even way after closing time so an extra bonus point for them.

  • Cynthia L.

How have I not written a review for Old School?! I love their custard! It is the most authentic I have had outside of the midwest. It's not watery but firm and robust. Yes, it is a bit richer than ice cream, that's why they have a gallon of water for you to grab water from. I love that they keep the tradition of only 3 flavors (chocolate, vanilla, and the flavor of the day)! Everytime I bring in new people the staff is always very friendly and patient (even though it's so similar to ordering ice cream, it still seems to bring some confusion). +Added bonus- they put the scoops in compostable cups and you can enjoy it with a compostable spoon

Best root beer float! This place is worth going back again and again, even twice in one week, because there is a different flavor of the day each day. There is always something different, something new. This is evil, because if you like their daily flavor, they will sell you a tub to go. Not only that, there is this monthly calendar on their wall with all of their up-coming daily flavors, luring you to come back for another frozen treat before you even place your current order! They do get a line, but it moves quick. The custard is super smooth and not too strongly flavored, the sweetness level is right on the spot of perfection. The store is bright and clean. The only problem is how pathetic and helpless hooked to the custard one feels when circling the lot again and again for parking.

went in here for the second time tonight had to try it again and make sure it wasn't just a fluke that it was so good And the results of the test were positively it is Damn Good Stuff Maynard !! so the first time I had the Coconut Custard, and it was so creamy and smooth, I just had it in a cup that time wanted to have the Custard all to its self with out any competition from a cone tonight I had the "Magic Cookie Bar" and it was just as smooth and Creamy but with Cookie and Chocolate, and I got it in a Freshly made Waffle Cone, and it was so fresh the cone was still warm I almost didn't go in tonight as it was packed but the line moved really quickly, and there was a guy at the end of the line with a cup of the "Magic Cookie Bar" and a second cup with sample spoons, so everyone got to try the special of the day, even if that isn't what they came in for like others have said they have lots of staff working so very prompt service, and they all seemed to be happy and enjoying there job I will be back to try other daily flavors I am sure

Executive Summary: Huge menu (literally) Not a lot of options $4 for a one scoop waffle cone So the custard was excellent. This places serves vanilla, chocolate, and a "flavor of the day". I chose the butter pecan with wafflecone. Very good custard. The only real lacking part of this whole deal was the lack of flavors, but if you are a regular, that shouldn't be a problem. I appreciate the fact that it is all homemade (even the wafflecone) and if they offered more than the "flavor of the day" I'd bump it to 5 stars. Definitely a place to come back to though, but may walk rather than run. ;0

  • R. A.

Sure they have vanilla and chocolate...but I go mainly for the flavor of the day (FOD, as they say). They also make shakes and the such which are great. And why not, they're all custard based! This beats BR, DQ and most any of the so-called competion. If you haven't tried it (they do give tastes for free), you are missing out.

When I first heard of Old School Frozen Custard, I thought... why would I want the stuff they put inside of donuts? ;) I used to be hooked on frozen yogurt because it was a healthy sweet treat. But now I'm hooked on Frozen Custard. Who cares about the calories? Eat hard, workout harder! Great staff that makes you feel at home. Most remember what I order--muddy buddy, no whip, no fudge with graham cracker sprinkled across the top. How could you go wrong with peanut butter, brownie and frozen custard? :X I would not recommend adventurous flavors of the day or numerous toppings for first timers. Keep it simple, work your way up, and find what works best for you!

Mmm, so rich and delicious! It was one of those rare hot days that we had in August when we visited here. Originally we wanted to try Molly Moons for the first time, but they had a line going out the door and wrapping around the block. Yeah, right! There's no way I'm going to be a sucker and wait in that line for an hour! We came here instead, and it was soo worth it! There was a line, but it wasn't going out the door. We probably only waited a few minutes before we could order. This was the first time for all of us to try frozen custard and it did not disappoint. We ordered the home room, muddy buddy and a turtle. The muddy buddy was my fave, peanut butter, chocolate sauce and brownie! It normally comes with vanilla, but I changed it for chocolate custard instead. Yum!

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! I came here about a year ago with some friends, but I did not order anything, and for some reason never returned. After being thoroughly impressed from a pint of peanut butter ice cream and I purchased at the Central Co-Op, I decided to try the shop out for myself. I can't get enough, ever flavor I have tried is portrayed incredibly. The custard's texture is silky smooth. I've been coming every week to grab a pint right from the shop because they have more flavors to choose from, and they have a daily special flavor!!

Frozen custard...you don't see this very often, and it's a shame. But I'm glad it caught my eye whilst strolling through Capitol Hill! The chocolate is silky smooth heaven. I got mind served in one of their waffle cones. Best...waffle cone.....ever! Enough crunch and enough chewy. Delish! Stop by...eat some custard...thank me later.

Kind of a glorified Dairy Queen and I don't mean that in a bad way. This is a solid place. I enjoyed looking over the menu with all it's double entendres. I had the turtle which was very good and very sweet. All and all a good value, but I'm not a huge fan of soft serve, so if you are you might want to add a star to this review.

I come here a lot. Hailing from the East Coast, I am so sad that ice cream is an afterthought in Seattle. There are very few ice cream places, and the ones that exist have that gourmet flare. Sometimes, you just want some simple ice cream. Hail Old School. This is my favorite ice cream place in Seattle. I LOVE the texture of the ice cream. It's a "hard" ice cream, but it's soft and smooth. I ALWAYS get the chocolate ice cream, it's just SO good. I love my chocolate ice cream and am really picky, but this is the perfect balance of not too sweet and creamy. If you like variety, this place probably won't be the best option. They only have 2 regular flavors (chocolate and vanilla) and one flavor of the day. To be honest, I have yet to find a flavor of the day that I like. I'd say the chocolate peanut butter is my favorite of all the ones I've tried. However, I wouldn't say I am a good source for this because I do not like toppings. I'm a traditionalist; I like the ice cream to be simple and stand on its own. Their flavor of the days are often their vanilla or chocolate staples mixed with other flavors and toppings, so not my favorite. However, I can recommend the turtle sundae, super good if you like pecans and fudge.

  • Leigh F.

Yum. Simple and delicious. I don't care for crazy flavors or a ton of toppings on my ice cream. I'm pretty traditional when it comes to my desserts, which is why I like this place so much. Vanilla or chocolate and then the flavor of the day. It's doesn't get much better than a scoop of chocolate in a freshly made waffle cone. The texture of the frozen custard is so amazing. Words just don't do it justice. It's creamy and rich and just... bomb. Pretty cheap too - $3 for a huge scoop.

If you've never had frozen custard, this would be a great place to try it out. The staff is friendly, and the frozen custard is great. If you go on a good night, you can try a great new flavor, but their vanilla is a really good stand-by. Their specials seem to be a hit with the people I go with as well, but I'm more of a Plain-Jane person, so I get just a "scoop." The price also isn't bad compared to other nearby ice cream shops, so you won't regret your purchase at all. So if you are getting bored of ice cream, or just want to try something new, check out Old School.

This place is delicious. Of course it is, it's frozen custard! I got a scoop of vanilla and a scoop of chocolate just to make sure their foundations were strong. Both fantastic. The counterpart got a scoop of vanilla in a hot apple cinnamon drink. Possibly the best hot drink I've ever had. And genius! Would love to go here again and try some of their specials.

First time here...friendly service, nice atmosphere, delicious desserts! I love that they have milkshakes and root beer floats! I wish more places like this (and not just Molly Moons), would get more attention....especially when you can get WAY better service here. The hipster attitude in this city gets really old...who needs it when you just wanna satisfy a sweet tooth?! Yum!

I come back to old school quite often... but not all stop-by's are "review update" worthy. Last night, however, WAS! Yesterday was Tiramisu day - if you know the routine, they have 3 flavors daily (vanilla, chocolate, and the flavor-of-the-day). I actually put the flavor-of-the-day in my blackberry calendar ahead of time. They seriously should make an app for phones, that automatically stores the flavor-of-the-day in your calendar... not too much to ask, right? Back to the Tiramisu. Delicious! Being one of my absolute favorite desserts, I couldn't miss this flavor. The texture - always amazing. The taste - nice tangy cream spiked with Rum flavor. Just the way I like it. I was quite impressed. THEN... Dun Dun Dun... Hair found in the custard. BIG violation of my comfort zone. Good news - we were almost done splitting our sundae and the sweet girl at the register was awesome and gave us a full refund. 5 stars - Tiramisu -1 star - Hair ----------------------- 4 stars + . 5 (Good Service)= 4.5 stars Fabulous treats, madi street.

Went in to get a pint to go. Friend recommended vanilla and it was a fabulous vanilla. The consistency was like a dense gelato; very creamy and rich. I appreciated that it had plenty of vanilla flavor without being too sweet. The only odd thing was seeing the custard come out the machines in the open air and down chutes.

I was so excited to try this place! We went in at 6pm on a Wednesday night and the place was empty other than the 2 employees working there who saw us come in but didn't greet us or even smile or anything. Our plan was to get a pint of frozen custard to take home and enjoy later. We looked in the case and asked the bearded fellow if they had any other flavors or if this was it... and he motioned to us to come over to the "Order Here" part of the counter to get our question answered. Seemed kind of rude to me, I mean, he could just as easily have come over to us since we were obviously looking at the pint freezer... Anyway, the custard was fine but I won't go back to a place where the service is so disappointing. Really too bad, because I could see this blossoming into a long-term relationship had they been even a little bit more friendly to their customers.

The best frozen treat in Seattle, hands down. With the chocolate and vanilla standards plus a different "flavor of the day" every day, you're sure to find something you like. Change up the pace with on the their sundaes or by adding some candy or fruit goodies. The staff can be hit or miss but are usually happy to answer questions and give you a taste of the "fod" before you commit.

I am thankful that I live just far enough away from this place that it's too inconvenient for me to walk to, but convenient enough for me to drive to for a late night treat. I normally shy away from pre-made sundaes and stick with their chocolate custard in a waffle cone, but their Playground sundae (chocolate custard, Oreo cookies, hot fudge, gummy worms, and whipped cream) is TO DIE FOR. Their vanilla custard is not that appealing to me, but between the standard chocolate and an unusual flavor of the day (key lime - YUM!), I am always satisfied. The place itself is rather small, and is completely no frills. They have old wooden chairs that look like they're from old schoolhouses, and what little photographs they have on the wall are of local Seattle schools. When it gets busy, the line is really cramped as there is only a very small pathway to the register. There also isn't a good place for you to observe them making your custard creation. I wish they would open it up a bit more in there! However, my favorite part about this place is the fact that it's open until 11pm every night - it's the right way to start a late night of studying.

if you've never had frozen custard before - be prepared - this ain't your papa's ice cream (or maybe it is?). my boyfriend loves ice cream and we'd walked by this place so many times that we finally decided to pop in. unfortunately the night we hit it their flavor of the day was key lime - meeehhh. we tasted the vanilla and chocolate, and my boyfriend ordered a "scoop" of the chocolate. i say "scoop" because what was actually handed to him was probably close to half a PINT wedged perfectly into a warm waffle cone. me - i'm not much of an ice cream eater - so I took a small bite here and there (i should mention i also had half a dozen cupcakes in my arms, oink oink!) and let him take over the rest. "this stuff totally sticks to your gut!" is the overall sentiment i gathered as he neared the halfway point of consumption. indeed, the contents of the waffle cone resembled wood puddy more than ice cream, but the flavor is rich and the experience quite decadent overall. if you like the richness of gelato and want something with a little more "meat" to it, i'd say frozen custard is the thing for you. if, however, you're more like me and enjoy airy frozen treats like frozen yogurt or standard ice cream, this may be a bit of an overload for you. still, i think we might pop back one of these days when a particular flavor offering is just too enticing to skip.

WOW! this place is SO delicious! i went there for the first time last weekend and the flavors were amazing! there are LOTS of choices and specials, and the fillings/toppings just make the whole thing so special. it's on the pricey side ($7 for an order), but they come out big.. good enough for 2-3 people.

I love this place! The name explains it all, its a cute old fashion frozen custard shop. They have a great selection of flavors and delicious sundays. I had the muddy buddy sunday and it was AMAZING! The frozen custard is creamier than a regular ice cream and makes the perfect afternoon treat. The staff is friendly and the place is clean. I will definitely be back.

Oh...oh, man. Oh, this is so embarrassing. So, we wanted dessert, and heard this was the place for it. My boyfriend had been here once before, and when he talked about it, he just got this, dreamy, faraway look in his eyes, like I couldn't possibly understand. So we got here, and I selected something called the "Muddy Buddy". I chose quickly because they were busy, and I just saw the words "peanut butter" and "chocolate" and knew it would be a good choice. But...oh. Oh. It ended up being a brownie. And...and I love brownies. It was a warm, flaky-topped, dense, fudgy, homemade brownie. And...oh, dear. I'm getting...um... it had peanut butter on it. Hang on... *fans self* and on that, was the smoothest, coldest, silkiest, most delicious frozen custard I could imagine, like a happy vanilla cloud. And...and on that... *looks down, face reddens*...was hot fudge sauce. And some whipped cream. And...and I tried a bite that had a bit of everything... and...I'll just say it. You know the bits of your body that sometimes, if you poke at them enough, something kind of magic happens? Well, that happened TO MY MOUTH, right there at Old School Frozen Custard. I had to hang on to something. I think I wept, a little. My knees still shake when I remember it. Afterwards, I felt a little different. A little changed. I cradled my custard cup for a while, murmuring to it affectionately. Ah, I was just a schoolgirl then, full of wonder and innocence....and I'm glad Old School was my first frozen custard. It was just the way everyone's first should be. (P.S. It's big, though - go slowly and be gentle).

I didn't know what to expect. Everyone kept talking about it, and all I could imagine was custard pie (which is also awesome). But when I finally made my way down to this little Cap Hill spot, boy was I caugh off guard. There was nothing that could've prepared me for the awesome dessert deliciousness that was about to happen in my mouth. For my first visit I thought I would be adventureous and try on of their specialty sundaes. I forget the name of it now, but it included a mondo brownie slathered with peanut butter, topped with 2 scoops of vanilla goodness, drenched in hot fudge. Being the dessert lover that I am, I thought I could handle it. The taste combination is overwhelming. It's good- on so many levels. Needless to say, although happily full, I felt sick that evening. I probably should've shared that with somebody! Since the first visit, I've been back.. but getting only one scoop at a time ;) And I have to say.. the pre packaged pints that they sell, that include past flavors of the day.. the hold up so incredibely well in the freezer! So much better than ice cream, and the taste is just as awesome. Win!

It's great stuff. I first had my first Frozen Custard in Granville, Ohio last summer. I was so impressed with it's creamy texture so different than soft serve ice cream and not as dense as ice cream. I'm glad that Old School Frozen Custard came to Seattle. I had the Mountain Blackberry the first time I went in. The berries actually tasted fresh and the flavor combo was really good. Today I had chocolate, the best chocolate cone I've ever had! The homemade waffle cones are great tasting because they're thin. Unfortunately it dripped big time out of the end. Hot dogs are great except I didn't like the neon green pickle relish it looks fake. Irving's Red Hots in Sun Valley are still the best hot dogs but these take a close second.

I've called 'Losing it with Jillian', 'cuz in about 3 months, i'm going to need her help in losing all the roly-poly-ness gained by camping here all summer. i'm going have my spot on her show and tell her, 'Old school frozen custard and the yummy brownie base, marshmallow creme topping on top of a hefty scoop of frozen custard did this to me.' she's going to yell at me, i'm going to cry and Morrissey is going to write a song about me. Again, the best dish is not on the menu. just take a liter of custard home, vanilla or chocolate. go and get some cheap-o donut holes from the franz outlet on jackson and make a custard and donut parfait. a layer of donut holes, then custard, then fudge, and keep layering till your abs weep.

I came here when they first opened and got a free cone! I've been back with friends, and I can't seem to stop getting vanilla (cuz I'm like a vanilla addict or something). Others I've been with have enjoyed their special flavor of the day. I like that you can look up the different flavors online to see when they're coming up. You can also buy pints to take home. I noticed that their case had a bunch of pints of some of the special flavors from the previous days, so if you miss your favorite, try seeing if they have it in their take home case. Minus one star because it's ridiculously hard to park around there sometimes! Almost makes you give up on going to get yer custard fix!

Flan in a cone? Definitely not! Frozen custard uses the same basic ingredients in ice cream, but kicks it up a notch with the addition of egg yolks (also present in flan, crème brûlée and other eggy delights). The yolks makes frozen custard into a silky, sinfully dense dessert. I've had the pleasure of tasting the cherry cheesecake and Hawaiian coconut flavors. Both are true to their descriptions, if perhaps a little sweet. But my favorite experience was a sample of Ryan's Drizzle, which is the Old School version of an affogato: espresso poured over vanilla frozen custard. The strong, bitter coffee is expertly balanced by the creamy custard, and all I can say is: Wow! Old School offers a schedule of their flavors for the month so you can plan your visits accordingly. The menu of other school-themed items (Recess, The Locker Room) is cleverly written on a blackboard. Service is pleasant enough, although sometimes a bit slow, causing lines out the door. Serving sizes are reasonable, especially for such a dense dessert. With the variety of dessert options in Capitol Hill, Old School Frozen Custard is definitely at the top of my list.

This is custard done right. Perfectly creamy, soft texture and great flavor. Prices are reasonable and the ambiance is fresh and modern. The staff could have been friendlier, but I was too excited about the taste of custard to care.

YUM! I'm a bit of a chocoholic and found the plain chocolate flavor only "okay" but the big topping selection and rotating flavor of the day is enough to keep me coming back. They even have a chalkboard with their upcoming flavor schedule, so I'm standing there, mouth watering in anticipation as I wait for my ice cream, promising myself to come back for "strawberry cheesecake" or "key lime pie" in a few days. All of my friends got something entirely different - I got a "concrete" which is a blended ice cream + topping combo, a lot like a McDonalds Blizzard. My friends got a root beer float, a sundae, and a waffle cone filled with ice cream. I was eyeing their choices as I gobbled down my heath bar concoction. I'm glad it's a bit of a walk from my house, because my evil sweet-tooth is urging me to go back *every day* until I try all the flavors. Must have willpower!

Now, I really couldn't tell you why custard is different from ice cream. All I know is I've heard a shit ton about this place. Mainly from folks luxuriously describing how wonderful this custard is. After our excursion at Plum we needed to satisfy our sweet tooth. Just a walk east up the hill and we were at Old School. It is a cute little place with 1950's/1960's pictures of high schools around Seattle. There is a massive chalk board on the wall that serves as the menu. A variety of concoctions await you with names related to high school like "The Locker Room" and "Homeroom". Very clever. Or you can make your own or just go with one scoop. The custard flavors are minimal. You have your usual chocolate and vanilla and a flavor of the day. That day it happened to be spiced apple pie. I ordered that and requested Oreo's be included. Hot diggity dog that is some good custard. It was thick and smooth. Being spiced apple pie the flavor was subtle and there were chunks of pie crust mixed in. I felt the Oreo's were a fantastic addition. Me likey Old School Frozen Custard. If you have a disposition for anything sweet related you will enjoy this custard.

I have never had such a rich, creamy frozen custard until I tried Old School Frozen Custard and I'm totally hooked. And to be honest, I was not sure what to expect from frozen custard before but now I definitely know and Old School knows what they're doing! I tried their affogato (not sure how they called it exactly on the menu) that consists of vanilla frozen custard and espresso ... and guess what? it was just heavenly! The custard was so flavorful and it goes so well with dark, rich espresso. I cannot express the awesome flavor into words ... you got to go there and try on your own. You will be speechless too!

Oh my goodness I don't understand why I didn't come here sooner. Their custard was so smooth and creamy! I tried their special of the day : Spicy apple pie and that was really interesting. I liked how it was not super sweet. I ordered their chocolate custard with marshmallow syrup and that was a great combination. I think I started another addiction...

The smell of freshly made waffle cones has always been so comforting. That sweet smell that permeates the air is (usually) a sign of good times to come! Half a block away from Old School Frozen Custard you could smell the sugary goodness of a freshly cooking waffles and I practically peed myself in anticipation of having a) said waffle cone, and b) this magical thing called "custard" which I had never had. I guess we showed up at the right time, because there was zero line. I was slightly confused about what I should be ordering.... where are the flavors? What? Okay, I guess it's just Chocolate, Vanilla and the Flavor of the Day (S'more). They had toppings galore, but I decided to pass. My S'More custard was A-Ok! The texture was incredibly smooth, creamy and dense. While the marshmallow and graham cracker added some interesting texture, it really was just a tiny marshmallow and a tiny piece of graham cracker in my chocolate custard. I feel like they could have put a bit more into the mix (or maybe I was just shafted with a mediocre scoop). The chocolate custard though, that was good, so I guess I don't mind the lack of other ingredients. Oh, and the Waffle Cone was very niiiiiiiiiice. A small scoop (at $4) didn't seem like it would be a whole lot, but it's really quite filling. The sweetness and the heaviness of the eggs makes this a dessert you only need a small quantity of, so that $4 really does go a long way. Even though I finished my scoop, I kind of wish I hadn't..... talk about sugar rush!

"Lorraine, you are my density!" I've sampled exactly one scoop of Old School custard and I haven't been able to get George McFly's lovelorn exclamation out of my head ever since. This custard, unfortunately, did not make me swoon, but the density...now, that was impressive. The perfectly spherical scoop of chocolate custard sat precariously atop my sugar cone, and promptly rolled right off into my lap when I tried to take a lick. Lucky for us we'd chosen to sit at a table, or I'd have been watching it roll down the hill toward downtown. It surely would have, too, probably gathering all sorts of debris along the way until it snowballed (custard balled?) into a giant road hazard and plummeted *splat* onto I-5. Ok, maybe not...but that stuff sure does stick together - density, I tell you. Anywho, I grabbed the sticky frozen custard ball out of my lap and got a cup and spoon to contain the rogue dessert. Once I'd cleaned off my pants enough to be seen in public without incurring Immodium references, I sampled the chocolate treat. It had held up pretty well while waiting for me to come at it. It was still relatively spherical, with the exception of my fingerprints and one or 2 drops of meltiness. The texture was exceptionally smooth, which was nice, but it pretty much tasted exactly like chocolate soft serve. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I can definitely get soft serve cheaper than a scoop of this custard, and it won't leap off my ice cream cone. So, if you're in the mood for soft serve but need something that resists melting (or shapeshifting in any way), this is your stuff. Just remember to get it in a cup!

I get it now... Custard is freakin' good! I walked up the hill with a mission- taste Old School Custard!- which I had heard about on Yelp. Upon walking in I learned they serve vanilla, chocolate, and a flavor of the day. My day's flavor was Mango- perfect for the sun and vibe of the city that particular day. I ordered one scoop in a cup to go. My first taste of frozen custard was very good. I am a convert. I am going to compare the good custard at Old School Frozen Custard to a really really thick well flavored quality frozen yougurt. FYI's~ * They have a refrigerator full of various flavors for purchase in pint size * The chalkboard menu has suggestions- with fun names- for many different combinations of vanilla and chocolate with toppings- it is a cheaper way to go than picking a flavor and a add on * They have a menu of what the "flavor of the day" will be posted- Hello... planning ahead... Green Tea sounds so good! * A scoop was about $3

We come here when we're in the mood for straightforward, simple, creamy frozen deliciousness! Last night I went traditional with vanilla and rainbow sprinkles in a cake cone, but I stole more than a couple tastes from my husband's chocolate with butterfingers waffle cone. I did try a taste of the eggnog and it was a little too rich for me. The place has a super cheerful atmosphere, and the counter service was exceptionally friendly! My friend from out of town had never had frozen custard, and the girl behind the counter seemed happy to answer all of his questions with a smile.

6 Is the number of half eaten pints of custard in my freezer. Seriously. I bet I'm a week a way from them knowing my name in here. But it's all good because they're in walking distance and it makes a great end of the day date with the man. Not to mention it's the best ice cream-ish-thing I've ever eaten. EVER. But you've all heard that already. The only thing that could get better was if I could somehow merge their flavor calendar with my iCal. Then I would be nice and fat. Ps. cheesecake, apple pie, and s'mores flavors are mind blowing.

Flavored frozen custard? Blasphemy! I must admit the buttered pecan was sinfully delicious, but I'm a purist when it comes to the holiest of soft serve delights. Stick with the vanilla. With anything else you'll lose the richness of egg yolk that elevates this above secular soft serve and into the realm of spiritual frozen desserts. The Holy Trinity of richness, complexity, and mouth feel are all present providing irrefutable proof that God does truly love us, and wants us to be happy. The only true fault I find with this temple to the ice cream gods is with the scoop method vs. the soft serve method. They go with the scoop which is super dense if you are eating a cone and it forces you to bite into the ice cream with your teeth and shocks your nervous system! That's just not what I would consider intelligent design. Currently I am praying for sugar cones since they only have cups and cake cones. I will be proselytizing, praying and tithing here quite regularly. Amen.

Just for fun, I'm going to write a review comparing three places: Molly Moon's (on Pine), Old School Frozen Custard (on Pike), ANNNND homemade ice cream made in the comfort of my own home (somewhere in the dark underbelly of lower Queen Anne). Vanilla is the standard I use for ice cream comparisons, and this is no exception. I'll rate five factors worth 5 stars each, then use an intensely complicated formula of adding and dividing to assess the final star-age out of 5. These factors are: Flavor, texture, waffle cone, service, and... the wow factor. Let's start with my own ice cream. After purchasing a $15 vanilla bean, I scoop it up into the heaviest cream I can find and chug it through my ice cream machine. Chug chug chug, some time in the freezer, and oila! Homemade ice cream! Now for the review: HOMEMADE ICE CREAM FROM COMFORT OF HOME [9/5 = 1.8] so rounded to... 2 STARS FLAVOR: Good flavor with real vanilla, but a bit on the light side. 4 stars. TEXTURE: A bit too icy for my taste, but still better than QFC. 2 stars. WAFFLE CONE: What waffle cone, I can barely make ice cream! 0 Stars. SERVICE: Get your own. Please. 0 stars. WOW factor: Kind of cool making your own, I guess. 3 stars. MOLLY MOON'S ICE CREAM (on Pine) [21/5 = 4.2], so... 4 STARS FLAVOR: Real vanilla bean, good rich flavor. 5 stars. TEXTURE: Very smooth, no ice, but a bit "fluffy". 4 stars. WAFFLE CONE: Excellent! Not too hard, good flavor. 5 stars. SERVICE: Good, but maybe a bit slow in busy times. 3 stars. WOW factor: It's really good ice cream! 4 stars. OLD SCHOOL FROZEN CUSTARD (on Pike) [23/5= 4.6, so... 5 STARS FLAVOR: Real vanilla bean not apparent, but good rich flavor. 5 stars. TEXTURE: Amazingly smooth, no ice, melts just right! 5 stars. WAFFLE CONE: Good, but a bit too crunchy for my liking. 3 stars. SERVICE: Very fast, friendly, and expedient, even with lines. 5 stars. WOW factor: Custard is COOL! Lol. 5 stars. CONCLUSION: Both Molly Moon's and Old School Custard are excellent. Molly Moon's makes a superior waffle cone, but as the ice cream goes (or custard, whatever), I have to give it to Old School. My own homemade attempts at ice cream, while better than store-bought, pale in comparison to these experts. Maybe I need ice-cream making tips. Anyone?

Wait a second. Isn't this just soft serve? Because I swear on my grandpa's dahlias that I was just eating a richer version of Dairy Queen. Is Custard to Soft Serve as Aioli is to Mayo? Or perhaps, Thousand Island to Fry Sauce? Don't get me wrong. It's pretty tasty. The vanilla is pretty sweet and the chocolate has a very mild cocoa flavor (just like chocolate soft serve!), but the flavor of the day (Cherry) was a lil' on the Triaminic tip. I suppose if I want something soft and sweet and creamy, I'll go to Little Coney or Wonder Freeze and pay half the price, but you never know when you're on the Hill and craving something super creamy, super velvety, but not ice cream.

Old school custard is not an ice cream shop, it's a time machine. Old school custard transports you back to your childhood when you begged your parents to have that ice cream you wanted so bad. Only, unlike most childhood things this holds up and is still as delicious as ever.

umm...can we say yummm? I wandered into here as I was exploring my new hood. I asked for a sample and inquired about the difference between frozen custard and ice cream and the two friendly gentlemen told me that a) it's made with fresh eggs b) it's not frozen three times like ice cream and so smoother, creamier, and denser, and c) has half or one-third the fat (don't remember exactly, was automatically sold as soon as they said "less fat"). The Juicy Lemon was delish. I also loved that it was a simple choice of flavors. No overwhelming array of options. And I think it's pretty amazing they do a different flavor everyday. You know that means fresh! I'll be back fo' sho!

Hm...perhaps I'm missing something here, never having had frozen custard before. I went here the other evening after dinner, and the line wasn't too bad and moved at a decent (though leisurely) pace. Old School smelled delicious, I'll give them that. The smell was intoxicating, and frankly, better than the custard. There are only two flavors (chocolate and vanilla) and one specialty flavor that changes each day. They have a large menu of sundaes and concoctions all based on their core flavors, and if you're in the mood for an over-the-top dessert you'll be happy with two choices. But I'm generally a single-scoop girl, especially after a big dinner, and it's nice to have more than three choices. I love high-quality vanilla and chocolate, but sometimes you just want more options. The flavor that day was Mountain Blackberry, which sounded delicious. I got a single scoop of that, and watched them mix a spoonful of blackberry sauce into a serving of vanilla custard. While I appreciate the fresh approach (there were bits of whole blackberries) there was too little in it. It was attractive, but just tasted like vanilla--no blackberry flavor at all. The bf got a sundae with vanilla and caramel and pecans, and that was quite tasty. I liked that the pecans weren't candied, that would have been too much sugar in one cup. Everything tasted fresh and high-quality, though the vanilla was on the edge of too sweet (and I LOVE sweet). The other surprise, the big surprise, was that the custard tasted just like soft-serve. High-quality, flavorful soft-serve, but there was something very, very distinctively *soft-serve* about it that I was expecting at all. Don't get me wrong, it was very tasty. I do crave that soft-serve taste sometimes, or is it the texture? I don't know, but I do appreciate it. But I was a little irked at paying premium prices for vanilla-flavored "blackberry" soft-serve. I'll probably give it another shot to try the chocolate, and maybe try another daily flavor to see if any of the others have more oomph (or any at all). But in general I was disappointed with my first frozen custard experience. Everything was tasty, just not all that special. If this is what frozen custard is, I'll stick with gelato for my alternative ice cream fix.

Everything has changed since I tried the Muddy Buddy -- brownie, peanut butter (OMG!), chocolate sauce, and vanilla custard. I still don't favor frozen custard over ice cream, but OSFC's sundaes can't be beat. My only quibble with the Muddy Buddy is that I'd prefer the chocolate sauce, and maybe the peanut butter, be poured over the top of the custard. I still need to try the Cheerleader.

God YES. The music is great, the people are nice, the dining room is clean and cute, and their spoons are compostable. Oh, and the custard is freakin' amazing! I'm going to risk the wrath of the Hill and say this place blows Molly Moons out of the water. Ice cream just can't stand up to the awesomeness of custard. UPDATE: Because someone else mentioned lactose intolerance, I thought I should mention that I'm lactose intolerant as well and had no adverse effects from the custard here. Not sure why, if they process the milk differently or something, but my usual "Oh man, why did I eat ice cream?! Ugh!" stomachache never showed up. Sweet!

I've made it to Old School twice now and both times the experience has been delicious. I wasn't sure what to think at first as frozen custard isn't something I've eaten before. My best description would be something like soft serve but more thick and buttery without any chemical flavors. The first visit I had the cheesecake flavor. The second time the special flavor was butter pecan (which I sampled and it was good), but I opted for plain vanilla. Which is far from plain. It's cold and smooth and creamy. Yum. I've never gotten that Capitol Hill attitude here, the customer service is great so far. I've also never stood in a monster line.

After first having had experienced frozen custard in the midwest (Milwaukee) 11 years ago, I was excited to find out that Seattle had not only one, but two frozen custard places! After having been to Peak's a number of times, I decided it was time to give the place closer to me a try so that I could get frozen custard more often. I love the fact that it has a very simple business model - just 3 flavors a day. Always the chocolate and the vanilla and a wildcard interesting flavor. The wildcard flavor was a Magic Cookie bar, or something like that. It was an Irish Cream custard with bits of coconut & M&Ms mixed in, quite the combination. They also have an amazing Cafe Vita espresso custard What makes frozen custard so good is that, you only need the classic flavors for it to shine. I love that you can get a pint of it for $5.25 and a scoop for $3.

Stopped in on "free cone" day and am sorry to say I left disappointed. I had never had frozen custard before and was not sure what to expect. But, it sure was not what I got. I was expecting something "eggy," and, although Old School's web site claims their product is made with "1.4% egg yolk" and that is what separates it from ordinary ice cream, I just wasn't feeling it. I tried a vanilla cone, and the vanilla was waaay too sweet for my blood; I ended up tossing most of it. I agree with other reviewers that the "chalkboard menu" is overcrowded and disorganized. And, thank you, Cassie, for explaining that there is only one other flavor every day besides the standard chocolate and vanilla. While waiting in line, I was searching the board for a list of flavors. Now I know why I did not find this. I give three stars and not fewer because it's not their fault that their product is just not my thing, and it's a nice shop with nice employees. I wish them success. But, I have no reason to head back any time soon.

First I want to say that the Frozen Custard is really good. But that's as far as i can go. $3 for a tiny little scoop of custard(not even half a baseball sized) on what appears to be old school (cheap) cake cones. I was floored when the person behind the counter actually leveled off the scoop before she put it on the cone. I looked at her and said, "Is that all?" I probably won't go back unless someone else is buying. Maybe they should consider a larger portion or reducing the price. Molly moons scoop is nearly softball sized and well worth the $3.75

We like to walk over here after dinner. The selection is more traditional with a special each day, but If you're gonna do dairy, this is the way to go. Creamy, yummy deliciousness worth every single bite. The Cafe Vita Espresso is amazing, but I actually love the vanilla by itself. Check the calendar to see daily specials. Bonus - short line, nice people, and YUM!

SOOOOO GOOD!! It's been a week since I had frozen custard here and not a day has gone by where I haven't thought about that vanilla frozen custard. We got one of the sundaes... 2 scoops of vanilla with warm brownie and hot fudge. MMMM!! Best sundae ever. I was originally just planning on having one bite but ended up eating over half of it. Old school completely ruined my self control. Credit to yelp for helping me find this while we were in town. Luckily, I also knew about the somewhat complicated chalkboard menu and the fact that there's just vanilla, chocolate, and a flavor of the day. (Ours was key lime pie, which was kind of odd but not terrible). I'm actually glad that I don't live in Seattle otherwise my self control would be completely non existent and I would be here all the time. This is the best frozen custard/ice cream/soft serve/whatever you call it I've ever had!

You've heard it before, Ice Cream is the new Cupcake. The flavors of the day are worth a go, the lines are LONG (but shorter than molly's) Great custard, not much else to say!

  • Henrik B.

Does it taste good? Yes it does. Would I make a detour to get there? No I wouldn't. I went because I have seen the lines outside at times, and because it was the number one place on the front page of Yelp. However, as ice creams go I know several places with maybe 10 minutes walk that have tastier ice cream, more engaged staff, better atmosphere and a nicer price performance ratio. I also found that only having three flavors is a bit limiting. I wouldn't discourage people from going, but be aware that you will get expensive albeit nicely made, ice-cream served by people who seem to wish that they could go home.

I am so sorry to write this. I used to love this place but in the past year the quality has gone way down. I tried it again today , a scoop of vanilla. It was horrible, it had a sour, chemical taste and it was soggy on the cone, it looked like wet cottage cheese. It was gross, I threw it away. This was my final try, I wont go back. I am so disappointed that the owners have messed with their original delicious recipe. If they had to raise prices, it would have been better than diminishing the recipe so that it is now inedible.

Although thier selection is lesser than Molly Moons down the street I have to say I like this place better. They well make up for thier three daily flavors of ice cream by the fact that they have a extraordinary selection of things that they can do with those flavors with toppings, floats, etc I am a huge fan of thier coconut and cheesecake flavors. They don't skimp on thier portions either. I can frequently share a cup with my girlfriend and be totally satisfied. Plus thier cups and spoons are compostable. Last but not least, the staff here is super friendly (unlike Molly Moons who always look like they could use a break).

Air Conditioned for hot days. Plenty of seats and hip little custard shop. I like custard it isn't as cold as ice cream and is much smoother to eat :) I heart the name of their sundaes listed on a chalkboard and they always have a flavor of the day (check their website or be surprised) with vanilla and chocolate. I had a sundae when I was there with half flavor of the day (coconut) and then vanilla with a brownie and fudge...it was like eating a mounds bar...so yummy and tasty. They are happy to let you change things up like that and very helpful too. Their shakes are amazing and perfect to grab on the way to Cal Anderson Park. I also have gotten pints to go which have tasted great when I got them home.

As part of the PNW ICE (Ice Cream Excursion) I ventured to Old School Frozen Custard... OH DEAR GOD is this place amazing. The first visit was with my two gastronomic partners in crime. I simply had a cup of the plain vanilla custard and was totally blown away by its simple deliciousness. My companions had a sundae and the concrete...both were quite pleased. I've been back atleast 5 times since my first visit. I usually have a simple vanilla custard cone. I've opted for the flavor of the day twice, Chocolate Peanut butter (DELICIOUS but WAY TOO RICH) and Hawaiian Coconut (JEASUS BUT IT WAS AMAZING). Now I've had better custard back east but this place blows Peaks away here in Seattle.

I've only tried frozen custard in CA, so I'm not quite sure how this matches up to mid-west standards. But the frozen custard tasted pretty damn good to me! I asked if they could give me 2 half scoops and a whole scoop because I wanted a 2 scoop sundae, but with all three flavors... (yes, I know I am difficult)... and they gave it to me with NO PROBLEMOS. The frozen custard was thicker than soft serve, creamy like gelato but not as runny/melty like either... that's how I would describe it. It was so refreshing to break my cycle from frozen yogurt. Edit: The flavor of the day that I tried was Georgia Peach. (I've uploaded pics of the flavor calendar.)

Some of my friends might consider this a sacrilage, but I'm going to come out and say it: Old School is my favorite ice cream in Seattle. Yes, that's right, I like it more than Molly Moon's. There's only two flavors of custard. I've only eaten one of them. But that one, the chocolate, is a paradise. It's hard ice cream with the texture and flavor of soft serve, handed to me in a delightful waffle cone: 5 minutes of delightful ice creamy goodness! The daily flavors can be winners. I've had the smores and it was delicious. But in the end it's the ice cream base that matters, and Old School absolutely nails that. Don't make the mistake of getting the sugar cone. You will be covered in custard a few minutes later . . . custard you could've eaten if you'd just thought to get the waffle cone that could contain it all!

Ok. David M and I must have grown up in alternative realities because this was nothing like the custard I had back east. Key Differences: 1.) No soft-serve option. The "custard" tasted like it had come out of a soft serve machine and then placed in the cooler. The ice cream machines behind the freezer seem to support this hypothesis. 2.) It lacked the eggy-flavor most custards of my childhood had and erred on the side of milkiness. 3.) The menu is an anarchic, confusing mess. The actual scoop prices are located somewhere in the top/middle, but I was already confused by per scoop pricing, so I didn't realize where they were. The actual ice cream, oh sorry, "custard" was creamy and delicious, but it wasn't what it should have been. The place would do better calling itself a sundae shop -- that's more what it really is, and would have gotten an additional star or two from me for honesty. The staff is also still in need of training, but I'd blame that on it being their second day and not some character flaw on them or the part of management.

I am not a huge ice cream fan at all, it has to be pretty phenomenal for me to even really think twice about ice cream, but I am always thinking about Old School Frozen Custard!! The texture is so full and thick, the distinction between ice cream and custard is definitely experienced. I also like that they are continuously changing their flavor combos, but do have to admit I get really upset when I miss the chocolate cheese cake. The brownies are really great, and have found myself going here more for frozen custard than I have even ate ice cream in my entire life.

So good! My first experience with frozen custard and I was definitely wowed! I ordered a sundae, not knowing it would be three scoops, and the lady at the register warned me. Thank goodness because three scoops would have been wayyyy too much. She even suggested how I could order a smaller sundae with the same toppings, which saved me money and a stomach ache. I'll be back next time I'm in Seattle.

I'm not really sure what are the differences between soft ice cream and frozen custard are...but I'm a fan of the frozen custards at this place. I got the vanilla and the raspberrry and they were both really good. I love the velvety-melt in your mouth smoothness. The flavor is also very good...not too sweet or too rich. Just right! Plus, the line is not as long here compare to Molly Moon's. Prices are also fair. I will be back for more!

I thought the frozen custard was alright, but nothing to write home about. It reminded my friends and I of dairy queen's soft serve ice cream, somehow. I had the "turtle" sundae and also found their caramel sauce to be too buttery for me, and not caramelized enough, but that's a small thing. In other words, I didn't hate it, but wasn't blown away. The line was long--seemingly for the novelty or perhaps it was the post SIFF crowd, who knows. I would go back if someone in my crowd was dying for a scoop but otherwise, probably not.

The coconut custard is to die for! Print out the flavor calendar from their website, circle the coconut custard days, then go there on those days. Next time they have it, I'm buying a pint! The mint chip is pretty yummy too.

If you want a traditional, no-fuss but gourmet dessert, this is the place to go. Old School offers perfected and deliciously rich vanilla custard, chocolate custard and another flavor of the day. Nuff said. No balsamic, salted, whatever trend of the day flavor some other places have (not that that's bad.. but sometimes.. all you want is chocolate, you know?!) Their sundae combos are also bomb - would highly recommend the mud slide. The people there are super friendly and service is relatively quick, even when the line is out the door.

I landed here because of Yee Olde K-Towne's promotion of their free cone event. God damn this is some tasty stuff. Smoother and creamier (and therefore likely full of yummy death and fatassery) than any ice cream. I expect the line here to rival the visible-from-space like at Molly Moon's in no time. The surprise concretes (their equivalent of the frozen custard DQ blizzard) were a hit when I dropped them on their sweet toothed recipients.

This place has been getting a lot of buzz lately so I had to try it out. I got the plain vanilla on recommendation of other reviewers here, and it was pretty good! I was craving a hot dog, but that part of the menu had been poorly erased from the chalk board (I could still read the entire thing). When I asked the girl behind the counter she said they'd stopped selling hot dogs because they were too wasteful, I can respect that! All in all, the custard was great, but not worth the price. If they cut their prices by 40% I'd go back, until then, probably not.

  • Colleen W.

You can't really write anything bad about genuine frozen custard. Every man and woman on Earth should try this stuff. It's rich, silky, smooth perfection until it melts. We're lucky to live in an area with a few different choices. However, a sundae reeeally shouldn't cost you $7. I know we live in the land of $18 lattes, but come on. The mix-in berries (strawberry or blackberry) are pretty runny and syrupy. I wish they were more fresh or simply higher quality. Try the custard plain. The extras are unnecessary.

  • DF H.

You only think you know the meaning of the word "Creamy". The selection may seem limited at first: vanilla, chocolate, and a "flavor of the day" but those few flavors combined with that luscious decadent texture are unmatchable. Try just a plain cone or cup to start out, but when you go back be sure to try the various sundae combinations. (I have often gotten what they call a "dirty locker room", go ahead, ask THEM what it is.)

Very disappointed on my visit tonight!. I wanted a pint fresh from the ice cream machine and they wouldn't give it to me!..they can only give me a pre-portioned pint!???.. They have the container! They have the ice cream!?? .. Why not give it to a money paying customer??????

  • Casper T.

Yum Yum Yum! This place delivers tasty frozen custard every time :) I just ordered one of their "concretes" = frozen custards mixed together with toppings of choice, and it is delicious. Would have gone 5 stars, but for 2 of us ordering concrete's, the bill was over $12, but it's a treat, not an everyday stop. With all the pie hype lately, I'm glad this place is around to satisfy the sweet tooth without disappointment. Go eat Frozen Custard!

I Checked this place out on Free cone day and I had to come back and here is my review now being a paying customer. It's good frozen custard and to be a clique of everyone else dropping state names;I have to say being raised in the state of New York it reminded me of the good ol' custard at one of the Beef on wic stand on a hot n' sticky night after a soccer game. I had the vanilla cone on free day and I got the muddy buddy with Carmel, chocolate with vanilla custard AKA soft served ice cream seated above a house made brownie. It hit the spot, It was creamy, cold and the hot brownie mixed with the rich sauces was good. I got my Aunt the key lime pie that was the flavor of the day..She said it was ****ing really good. I must try the waffle cone it was hard not to get. the sweet smell was soo good but there is always next time. I also want to point out about the debate of Molly Moon's VS Old school. It's like comparing two different things and both are good on their own. The only problem of OSC is the lack of parking and rushing in trying to beat the parking lot enforcement but Old school your worth it.

    (4)
  • Warren C.

Frozen custard has a smoother and silkier texture. They always have vanilla and chocolate flavor, then it's the flavor of the day. A single scoop with a waffle cone is good, but the waffle cones are not as impressive as Molly Moon's. If you know the name of the creature on the chalkboard, you get a free scoop of frozen custard. (1 guess only). It's nice that put up locale Seattle High Schools around the room, and with school themes for their specialties works 'Cheerleader', 'Muddy Buddy', etc, it adds a cool atmosphere.

My friends and I have been to Molly Moon's several times and thought we'd give Old School Frozen Custard a try. We arrived around 8:30PM on a Sunday night to find the line not even 1/2 as long as the Molly Moon's line usually is. We only waited for a few minutes before it was our turn to order. While we had looked at the menu online before arriving, we were all still a bit confused as to what flavors they actually have. Turns out it's only vanilla, chocolate, and the special (which was key lime). They had so many choices of how you could get your custard. I was between the cheerleader and the locker room and finally decided on the cheerleader since I thought the white chocolate and strawberries would be a nice combination. The cups were filled to the top with vanilla custard and toppings. Be sure to ask when you order if you want whip cream or not. Otherwise, they just assume you want it. Anyway, I ate my entire cup of custard, which in hindsight I probably shouldn't have. I left with a bit of a tummy ache and a slight feeling of disappointment. I didn't feel like I had anything special. It actually felt like I had just stopped by Dairy Queen for frozen yogurt. In looking back...if you like sundaes and making your own ice cream creations, you'll probably love this place. But if you live for unique ice cream flavors and variety, you're better off heading to Baskin Robbins or Molly Moons.

This place was pretty SWEET. And boy, do I mean sweet. Went with the classic vanilla since it was my first time with the custard. Great texture - I like how it's a little softer and creamier than ice cream. Vanilla's the way to go for the first try. No toppings. Get the waffle cone if you have the room in your belly - they put some cinnamon flavor or something scrumptious in there. I have to say I enjoyed it immensely. The portion was large and worth the $4. Can't wait to try the flavors of the day!

  • Bill F.

Old School is really nice. The space is always open when Molly Moon is packed. I am grateful that people haven't quite overwhelmed them. Old School has three flavors daily, chocolate, vanilla and a special flavor. The creamy goodness seems more palatable and soft than Molly Moon's. I also don't have to wait 30 minutes for a cone, which always makes it taste better.

I found this place while looking for bluebird but they were closed. And thank the stars i did, this place is AMAZING I had a hot fudge with essentially everything that you can put on it. Blows molly back to the moon. The prices are a little high for the portions since a sundae comes in like a little plastic cup so u are looking at around 6 bucks average for a sundae but other than that... I'll be back dun dun dun dun dshhhh

My man knows I lovvvee sweets! He brings me here in the summer when he knows they have the flavor of the day that ill love. This is the best cold treat I've ever had! It's so creamy and delicious! You must try it :)

This place is delightful. I don't know what makes it different then ice cream, but custard is delicious. I love the huge variety of different flavors as well as the vanilla and chocolate that are offered every day. It would be nice if there was a special flavor that was offered all week, as long as a new one each day so its not quite so hit and miss. My only complaint is that parking is always difficult to find. I usually have to run in to buy custard while my boyfriend drives around the block.

Let's just start by saying I LOVE SOFT SERVE!! I always have and always will. This place has some of the creamiest frozen anything I have ever had! I'm not too into all those extra toppings, etc so I just did a plain cheesecake and shared a vanilla. The cheesecake...eh, I could have done without. Some places can do it, but this one was kinda not happening. The cheesecake chunks were in there, and hard (hence the fact they were frozen), but I was thinking maybe they shouldn't have been there! They soured up my custard! The vanilla was great though, so soft, and creamy! I would drive out of my way just to go back! As for prices, they were a little high for frozen custard! WTF is frozen custard anyway? I dunno, but I would pay that much for it (every once in awhile that is).

the ice cream was good not great, but the customer service was terrible. Maybe the way my persona is, it seem to me that this store is for certain people of class that I am not. I traveled the world and never experienced costumer service the way I did at this location. Overall I did not like the place or the people who worked there. You wont catch me dead there I tell you. And one thing the mid-west is Frozen Custard Masters, and this store had nothing to do wit real custards, Its a joke to me and all of y'all are fools.

  • Chris T.

Delicious stuff and pretty unique too! It's not quite ice cream (certainly much healthier though), doesn't have the tartness of frozen yogurt, and seems more flavorful than most soft serve. A bit pricey for what you get but I think that about most ice cream/frozen treat places (oddly enough, I will gladly pay $3 for a Trophy cupcake).

This place is pretty tasty but lacking in the great ambiance and hype that has pushed Molly Moon to the top. The custard is great though.... I had myself a scoop of regular with little bits of snickers. 'Twas delicious.

"Can I try the Green Tea?" "Yeah, you can, but it's gross. I feel bad serving it, actually." I chuckled and sampled, and yeah, it was on the weird side of okay. Luckily, the chocolate and vanilla are delicious and oh-so-creamy. The Muddy Buddy was such a surprise--WARM peanut butter, hot fudge, and brownie cradling my creamy vanilla. Sooo decadent. Sooo good. The line seemed long, but it moved really quickly. I was a little slow to pick up on the brilliant execution of the theme, which is hilarious. The Locker Room: "nuts, nuts, and more nuts!" That really made me a fan.

I was extremely hopeful when I heard about the opening of this place and so we made our way there this weekend and I'm so glad we did. We had a sundae with vanilla custard, white chocolate and strawberries. The white chocolate flavor was either non existent or over powered by the vanilla custard or sweet strawberres, I can't be sure. Besides that little bit of weirdness, the sundae was delicious. I am in love with the very dense yet still creamy texture. It's like a thicker, more dense version of soft serve vanilla. Mouth feel is similar to gelato but even more dense than that. The sweet/tart flavor of the strawberries was the perfect compliment to the richness of the custard. We will definitely be back. Again and again and again.

I like frozen stuff. Smoothies, shakes, malts, fro-yo, etc...so I liked this too. However, I can't say that it was anything revolutionary...yes it is smoother & creamier than "soft serve" ice cream due to the ingredients. Yes it is very rich. Yes it is a bit over-priced. It's all good. Service could be friendlier (no it wasn't insanely busy when we went)...I'm sure we'll stop in again some time this summer.

  • Tonya N.

So so creamy... I was worried that this place would finally ruin it for me for frozen custard but it didnt. Frozen Custard totally redeemed itself! :) Its not served as soft served as it is at Peaks but with a scoop - so has that ice cream feel. Had the cheesecake with strawberries and graham crackers, excellent, very very rich and smooth... Not as hard as icecream but not as soft as the other frozen custards i've had. I do think more toppings would be nice and having full sundaes to pick from. Friendly service and plenty of seating. DEF would come back for another scoop :)

  • Vangie G.

I am definitely a fan of frozen custard. There is a richness to the taste that reminds me of summer days of being a kid. I'm not one to try the off the wall specialty flavors of the day...but I love the vanilla with the freshly baked brownies. what's cool about this place is that it is open fairly late (which is the only time I have found my way there). It's a perfect place to have dessert in Capital Hill with a bunch of friends!

MMMMM! It was super sunny Seattle day today. After brunch, I walked up E Pike to get some Old School Frozen Custard. It was AWESOME! I told the owners that it was my first time there, and they promptly gave me samples of all three samples. They are sooo nice! I got the cheesecake flavor with waffle cone. The custard was awesome. It was soo silky smooth. And the waffle was made fresh before our eyes (as was the custard). It was a great way to end a Saturday stroll in Capitol Hill. I will definitely go back again! (The Caffe Vita coffee flavor is the next flavor on my "to try" list!)

  • Emmett D.

Great custard. These guys can hold their own against the best Milwaukee has to offer. Know what you're in for - it's very filling, very smooth, and very delicious. I'm not going to make this a frequent thing but I'll stop by here and there. We had the Recess Sundae - awesome. Next I need to try the milkshakes.

  • Charles D.

YUM YUM YUM I love that we have so many ice creameries on The Hill, I think Old School is my favorite. "But they only have 3 flavors" you say. I am a fan of people doing a small number of things really well rather than a lot of things so/so (I am talking to you Molly Moon's). The chocolate... so good, the vanilla an excellent example, the flavor of the day... honestly it is hit or miss (mostly miss) but last night I tried the peanut butter chocolate and was in heaven. Hurray for Capitol Hill! Hurray for ice cream! Hurray for me!

Incredible frozen custard! The first week we lived in the area we went here every night - it was July and we had a lot of friends coming to see our new place, don't judge! :) Great unique flavors rotating each day plus some awesome creations. Some highlights, milkshake made with their coconut custard and pineapple and the cheesecake custard with graham cracker crust and strawberries on top. We love this place!!

  • Nina N.

I tried all their flavors, and my favorite thus far is their orignal vanilla!!!! :) the special of the day wasn't to my likings.( key lime ) and it just didn't mesh. but the vanilla and chocolate were good :) Yesssssssssss do try it out, and the consistency isn't as thick but whatever. I tried, I liked, and I will come again.

After seeing all of these awesome reviews on Yelp - decided to do dessert at OSFC this evening. Didn't know what to expect as I've never had frozen custard before. I'm an icecream lover so I thought it would be comparable.. definitely different. If your a big FC fan then I would say that it was preety good - but a little too sweet for my taste. They only have 3 flavors here (choc/vanilla/flavoroftheday) I had a small sundae with strawberry and my husband had a concrete with blackberry - gotta say that I wish the toppings were fresh fruit - not syrupy sweet canned fruit! If I end up going back here - i would probably get a plain ol single scoop cone. For those regular icecream lovers, I'd recommend going down the street to Molly Moon's as it may be more to your liking.

  • Chris F.

I ate the peppermint custard and Kahlua custard here while on a food tour of Seattle and I have to say this was the best frozen custard I've ever had. It's incredibly rich and creamy without being too sweet. The flavors don't overpower the custard, which gives it these amazing layers of taste. Like, the peppermint custard could have easily been too minty, but it was perfect. You could taste the peppermint, but I also could taste vanilla bean, spice and a buttery sweetness. Likewise, I could taste Kahlua, but it wasn't too nutty, and had these amazing chocolate and spice flavors. I give this place my highest endorsement.

  • Adam M.

Not bad ice cream. It comes pre-mixed from Milwaukee. The reason it's called 'custard' is because it has egg in it. otherwise it's soft serve ice cream. waffle cone was stale. I'd guess the sundaes are good, i had no toppings.

God, this is good shit. I mean... so good. When Old School opened on the hill just after Molly Moon's did, I thought, "This is overkill. This is ridiculous. This is why we're fat." I liked Molly Moon's since the original is near my house and I've braved it a few times, but I never had an interest in trying Old School until a colleague of mine who only eats plain foods (hamburgers without condiments, spaghetti without cheese...) requested we take him there for a going-away vanilla cone. We went in the middle of the day in the middle of the week, so it was pretty dead inside when we arrived. The flavor of the day was strawberry, which sounded good enough to order on its own. They offer samples, but I decided to just go for it since I already know what strawberries taste like and didn't expect to be surprised. The fact that the only other flavors they had were chocolate and vanilla seemed kind of boring, but we all made it work (some ordered the specialty sundaes they have on the menu with toppings and junk, some just went plain in a cone). We waited a few minutes for our scoops and then... !!!!!!! A waffle cone full of Old School's strawberry frozen custard is like something a warlock would use to lure children into his tricked-out van before he turns them into dragons. It is so good. Dense, creamy, pure... where has this been all my life? I've had frozen custard (see my review for Peak's off Roosevelt), but this stuff is next level. I understand the hype now. The prices are reasonable. It's at the top of the hill so parking's almost nonexistent, but mid-day it's not terrible. I've been back a few times just before closing - they're open until 11pm every night - and the lines seem to get longer the later it gets, but it's nothing like the crawl at Molly Moon's and seems to go by faster somehow (less flavor options equals less, "Can I try one of everything? Twice?"). Cute interior, nice staff, A+++ product. Thanks to the flavor calendar on their website, I have Thursday's "Lemon Cake Batter" marked on my calendar with an urgent reminder set. I love you, Old School.

  • Lisa M.

Creamy and smooth vanilla frozen custard with hot fudge is divine. I don't mess with all the other toppings they offer, it doesn't need it. They used to have cake batter as one of their 'flavors of the day' but the last few times I've gone I haven't seen it on their monthly calendar. They have plenty of other daily flavors though that sound delicious like 'malted milk ball.' If you've never tried frozen custard, I highly recommend going here.

  • Hollie J.

This was amazing! We headed out there on a whim, based on some reviews I'd read here, and although we had to navigate around the Capitol Hill block party going on, we were fortunate enough to not have to wait in a long line. They had raspberry chocolate chip as the flavor of the day and OMG it was AWESOME! Definitely going to be going there many many more times.

  • Jennifer M.

I've not had a lot of custard in my life, but the stuff they sell at Old School seems a lot like soft serve ice cream. I like what they serve, but I either need to figure out how to order or they could offer sizes of their specials. I ordered the Locker Room which was good, but HUGE. Perhaps next time I'll order off the kids menu. The worst part about Old School is their location, actually. We regularly walk home from downtown up Pine to Madison which takes us past another ice cream place that I love even more. But, when I'm in the mood for a simple soft serve, it's all good. I'd go to Old School again.

This place is the antidote for Weight Watchers. The custards are fine, but require the addition of toppings to become interesting as desserts in their own right. I had hoped for something truly new and exceptional from OSFC. Alas, no.

  • sarah k.

Is this custard the new fro-yo? Probably NOT..considering its calorie ladened goodness. Do I feel like a TFC (total fat kid) while waiting in line? YES Is it about $2 too much YES Does it kick Molly Moons ASS? YES Will I go back...MOST DEFINITELY!

  • Sally A.

UM. MY FAVORITE FROZEN DESSERT EVER!! Creamy texture, yet it doesn't taste heavy like all other ice creams. Well, probably because it's frozen custard! Vanilla: Awesome. A great base is needed for all wonderfully tasty frozen custards. White Chocolate Chip: Although tasty, a tad too sweet (and I have a sweet tooth!) Banana Cream Pie: The best ever! Tastes exactly like it with graham cracker crust pieces in it!!! I could eat a whole gallon of this! I'd pick this over Molly Moon's any day. Street parking is usually not too hard to find there. Definitely should be on your Seattle Bucket List!

  • Yuliana A.

The only problem I have with this place is that finding parking can be a bitch, especially on weekends. The Pike triangle can be very busy dinnertime. It makes me cranky if I can't eat some frozen goodness just because I can't park my car! OK, enough whining...on to the good part! My fave here is the classic banana split (where else can you get old school banana split nowadays except here?) The smoothness of the frozen custard and the warm chocolate fudge reminds me of my childhood (the best food do!) and makes me come back for more. Usually when I come here I tried to stick to the basic, i.e. vanilla and chocolate. But sometimes they do have some daily flavors that I like...the cheesecake was great for example. With Bluebird and Molly Moon's nearby, Old School faces some tough competition. But if you just want some good, classic frozen treat, you should definitely come here!

Not so bad! The chocolate flavor could stand to be monkied with a little... but I'm biased because I was raised on NY states best frozen custard. (Abbots-- can't beat 'em!) I'd deffinatly go here again, but seriously folks-- get some chocolate sprinkles....

All I wanted today was a sundae and, as luck would have it, Old School Frozen Custard opened its doors today. I ordered a 2 scoop vanilla sundae with oreos and hot fudge. It was mighty tasty (damn, that vanilla frozen custard was amazing!), but I was longing for more oreo cookie bits and fudge. Although the toppings were sparse, the sundae was totally enjoyable. I've got to go back and taste the black cherry frozen custard by its lonesome. I bet that'll truly make me a fan.

i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Old School with all my heart. The best part is eating the custard fresh as it rolls out. So creamy. So delectable. So good. Just a scoop of regular vanilla is perfect (although I liked the vanilla better without their new addition of the vanilla bean). The banana milkshake is quite amazing as well. Also, the concrete with any topping (a blizzard-esque creation) is so much better with custard rather than ice cream. Old School is THE place to go.

I love this place, best custard I have ever had. They truly do more with less. Everyday they only make Chocolate, Vanilla and One other flavor. They are that good they destroy the competition at the level of basic flavors, Almost like they need a handicap to make it fair to the rest of the hipster ice cream shops like molly moons (seriously if i read one more inflated salted caramel review I will scream.) Super friendly people, fun shop, great menu of sundaes, I just can't think of a way to make what they do better.

Kind of pricy for a scoop of custard but man it's good. I've had famous frozen custard in Milwaukee but now I prefer to go back for more in Seattle. Try one vanilla scoop and you'll know what I mean. I would give five stars if the price came down.

At first I was skeptical - custard? That's not ice cream is it? Sounded more like a pie filling to me. But after one bite I was quickly swayed. Although they only have vanilla and chocolate on an everyday basis they also have a new flavor of the day - everyday! Key Lime Pie is awesome! This is definitely the place to head to for a sundae but beware - custard is way more dense and creamy then your typical ice cream so your eyes and stomach will probably be out of sync when you decide on that triple scoop goodness. So far I can't tear my taste buds away from the Recess Sundae!

If this stuff was $1 a scoop like the ice cream was when I was growing up, it would get an extra star. But since this is custard in the 21st Century, 4 stars is about as good as it gets. The flavors can be a wee wacky sometimes, but overall this is an awesome place. Get it plain or get it with fixins', you can't go wrong. I don't know if custard is better for you than ice cream, but I like to think so. And it's the perfect after-Piecora's desert place, since it's right across the street.

Pack your lactose pills! We're going on a Frozen Custard Trip. The creamiest frozen treat I have ever had and I know for sure from my post-eating stomach revolt. But is it worth the pain? For sure! I just got a single scope of vanilla in a waffle cone. The custard was just pure silk and the waffle cone was an A+. One of our friends got the Muddy Buddy. I got a taste and was in complete heaven, but I could never finish it on my own! So bring a friend or five, and enjoy the simple delightful flavors!

Ohz yeah! Texture, texture, texture! Frozen custard is all about the texture and Old School has that down. But I would like a bit more richness from the classic: Vanilla. I want my mouth to be coated in cream after every bite. I want to take it home with me. I want, dare-I-say, more calories?

I've only come here on the hottest day of the year, when it was 104F just outside the air conditioned walls of this place, and once earlier in the summer, when I snuck away from work a bit early on a hot Friday afternoon. But I approve. Creamy, rich, smooth stuff. I've only had the vanilla so far, once with a slightly mushy waffle cone, and once with strawberries and white chocolate sauce (aka The Cheerleader, which H. had to try, since it references her hobby). I'm all for more innovative, crazy flavors; I've always got a homemade miso caramel ice cream or hibiscus sorbet or roasted sweet potato ice cream in my freezer. If that's what I need, I'll stay home, or maybe stop at Molly Moon's. But sometimes comforting, basic flavors aided by high-tech mixing equipment and the occasional fresh fruit topping are all you need.

I don't know why, but I really like this place. The ambiance? The custard? Who knows...I just like it here. I'd never had frozen custard before, and this was a great place to introduce myself to it. It's so smooth, creamy and delicious! I do like soft serve ice cream, but this was just soooooo much better! I got the "Home Room" Brownies, vanilla custard, and hot fudge...YUM! The boyfriend and I were practically fighting over it. I got the last bite only because I asked him "you don't want anymore, right?" as I spooned the last of it into my mouth. It was the only way to ensure that I would get it. Luckily he didn't snatch it out of my hand and just conceded that I had won. There's just something about the custard frozen goodness. I know some have said it was "boring" and "nothing special" but *I* think it's fabulous, especially with all the toppings I can get. YUM!

I had an old co-worker rave to me earlier this year about frozen custard. He's an older guy born and raised in the midwest. Think "meat and potatoes", Schlitz drinkin', football jersey wearing, midwestern dude. His idea of a night out was Olive Garden. Anyway, he raved about how he found authentic midwestern frozen custard on Capitol Hill. I thought....great have fun with your dairy queen soft serve. I'll stick with Molly Moon's or Fainting Goat. I STAND CORRECTED. Frozen custard is bomb and Old School (while I have no basis for comparison) is awesome! Eating frozen custard is like eating cold ice cream flavored butter. It just melts in your mouth. OK, I may have not chosen the best words to describe the experience, but trust me, it's good. No line too!

Strawberry Custard in a waffle cone. Bliss! Pure bliss! Unlike David B, my cone was filled to the brim with this sweet, creamy confection. My advice: forgo the cake cone and go for the waffle cone. You can't go wrong. The flavor was mind blowingly rich and delicious but not overpowering. The texture is similar to soft serve but it ends there. The custard is very, very dense and creamy and not pumped full of air like a soft serve. Oh, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Also, I would suggest getting your custard plain. Don't gussy it up with sauces and things. This stuff is rich enough on its own. No need to put yourself into a sugar coma. Besides, the true test of good frozen deliciousness like this is how it tastes unadorned. The space is small and a bit confusing for the first timer. You wait in line in a narrow aisle that leads back to the restrooms. I can't imagine how cramped and confined this must be and feel when it's busy. Fortunately for me the day I visited there was only one person in line and three people sitting at a table. It's kind of weird that chocolate and vanilla are the only two consistent standard flavors on the menu. I would suggest adding strawberry as another standard flavor. I will be back when strawberry is once again the featured flavor of the day.

I didn't realize I missed frozen custard until it came to the 'hood. The custard is excellent, the toppings and house sundaes are good. I'd not be able to resist 5 stars, except Old School is a victim of its success, and I just can't recommend fighting your way through the crowds at times... particularly since the crowd feels less, uhm, local than that at Molly Moon's.

Custard in Seattle!!! How I have waited for this. Try the old fashioned concrete. This is more or less like a Blizzard at DQ expect creamier. My favorite combo is the walnut and caramel in vanilla. Simply great.

  • Eloise M.

This place is like Molly Moon's. But better. You might say, "ice cream, custard, what's the difference?"(at least, that what I said.) But, to my surprise, there is a definite difference. The custard is definitely thicker and creamier (unfortunately, that means more calories) than regular ice cream, almost like really thick yogurt. Yes, it's small, and not really well known about, but unique and one-of-a-kind. The flavors are unique and evanescent, so go there. Now. And experience "custard" for yourself. And about the flavors? They're divine.

Yay! I enjoy going here when im in the area. Smooth and creamy, and filling! I always make my own sundae because I feel the ones on the menu are too big. Basic vanilla, brownie and fudge always!....depending on the flavor of the day of course! It would be more awesome if they had more than three flavors a day though.

I finally went last weekend. Thank you once again to the many Yelpers who recommended this place. I loved my experience and enjoyed my order of the vanilla and chocolate flavors!!! Thank goodness they always have the safe flavors because the special that day was mocha and I am not a coffee-fan.

Was brought here by some friends as a new dessert place alternative to the always crowded Molly Moon's. First off, their frozen custard was very good, nice and rich, creamy texture that is a nice change from your regular, everyday ice cream texture. I ordered the sundae with the brownies and chocolate syrup, VERY good. My only gripe about this place is that they pretty much only serve vanilla flavor frozen custard with may be a 1-2 special flavors that changes almost everyday. They try to compensate by having many different toppings and for some people that might be enough, but I would like a few other flavors of the frozen custard. All in all, it's worth trying out if you're looking for a new dessert place.

they did it and did it well according to me, but i've never had frozen custard before. ask someone from the mid-west and they might think differently. but as far as i'm concerned, it was pretty good. still, i'd choose ice cream over frozen custard, frozen yogurt, sorbet or gelato any day.

I've been back to Old School Frozen Custard many times since my last review, and my love for their creamy delights grows with every bite. I've had dreams about their Turtle sundae. The Turtle usually consists of vanilla frozen custard that is topped with hot fudge, pecans, and warm caramel, and whipped cream. If their flavor of the day is Butter Pecan, you would be doing yourself a grave disservice by NOT running to Old School and getting yourself a Turtle sundae with Butter Pecan instead of the typical vanilla. It's pecannily delicious.

Been there twice this week & have successfully made 5 other devotees in the process!! Vanilla & chocolate are made daily and an additional flavor is changed daily. I was able to test out Butter Pecan & Tiramisu. The Tiramisu is LIFE CHANGING! I orgasmed everytime that velvety goodness hit my mouth.

I love trying out new places and it really helps that it's near my work. So because of the sunny weather we've been having, I decided to try this place out, twice. The first time, I got a vanilla with brownies. They always have vanilla and chocolate, plus a daily flavor (butterscotch). What's great, I found out, is that vanilla is gluten free! My co-worker is allergic to gluten so this is great news. On my second visit, I tried their "concrete". This time, I tried it with the daily flavor, raspberry and mixed in white chocolate and warm caramel sauce. They made a mistake and made it with vanilla. I thought that the color was off. It was whte. I thought they just didn't had any food coloring, so tried it. I tasted nothing of raspberry and took it back to have my order corrected. I soon got my new concrete! I found the taste very yummy (that means I love it), but should have gone with non-warm sauces. You lose the creamyness once your custard melts, so stay away from the warm sauces, if you want it to last longer. Otherwise, I love the taste!

Normally when people think of custard they are grossed out but to everyones surprise Old School's frozen custard is to DIE FOR. It is egg based product which makes it deliciously thick and creamy. I also enjoy that they make it FRESH everyday and its not airy like normal soft serve ice cream. The owners are great and they truly care about the business and quality! They need more of these bad boys. Maybe in Oregon?! My favorite flavor is juicy lemon. Also they have anifty calendar online so you can see what the flavor of the day is. My only suggestion is to have more stores so I can eat it everywhere i go everyday!!!!!!!!!!!

I love this place, being from Saint Louis I was really looking forward to this place opening on Capitol Hill. With custard there's a lot more fat than ice cream, less air and a much smoother texture. The best flavor in my opinion is key lime, the graham crackers is what makes it. My opinion on some of the flavors I've had: Chocolate and vanilla: Both made very well. Cherry Cheesecake: Was better when they first opened and had chunks of cheesecake in it, now it has that cheesecake flavoring that has a sour taste to it. Bubblegum: shards of real gum balls kills it.. Cherry vanilla: light flavor and delicious Malted Milk ball: Needs to be malty flavor in the custard. Peanut Butter chocolate: expected peanut butter custard w/ chocolate swirls, got chocolate custard with gobs of peanut butter. Also the peanut butter had ice crystals. Green Tea: Tasted like dry milk, no green tea flavor. Was horrible. My household had their custard pints filling our freezer for a while, but then we realized we need to be a little more picky when choosing our flavors. Despite some poor flavor execution, my household hasn't bought ice cream since this place opened. So delicious.

Friendly people, serving what tastes exactly like soft-serve ice cream. There are three flavors on any given day: vanilla, chocolate, and a daily special (the latter is generally something with mass-market candy). We tried the vanilla and the daily flavor and were completely unimpressed. If I'm going to eat something calorie-laden, I want it to be special! Skip Old School and head to Molly Moon's ice cream, just a few blocks away, instead.

Here's the thing: Seattle ice cream shops aren't very good. As such, a place like Molly Moon's gets overrated to the moon. Sure, the fact that they sell homemade ice cream is certainly exciting and noble, but the unfortunate truth is that their flavors just aren't very good. Yes, they're creative but when push comes to shove I'd be much happier opening a half gallon of Tillamook Mudslide at my apartment than wading through their cardamone or ginger oddities. Seattle's newest ice cream shop, Old School Frozen Custard, succeeds in both concept and execution. Sure, they only sell three flavors (vanilla, chocolate, and the flavor of the day) but when those flavors are better than anything all the other local shops serve up that makes you the best. For those that don't know, frozen custard is basically a thicker, heavier, creamier soft ice cream. What's soft ice cream? A soft, creamy version of regular ice cream that gets squeezed out of a machine. Old School actually pumps their custard out of the machine and then scoops it into your cup or cone when you order, different than straight out of the machine in NJ and NY, but the taste is definitely a match. Bottom line: I've been waiting for good soft ice cream or its equivalent in Seattle for quite some time now. Old School is expensive for what you get ($4 for a tiny cup with rainbow sprinkles) but no doubt it is pretty close to "the real deal."

We had a problem. Some of our party wanted to go to Molly Moon's. Some wanted to go to Bluebird. I ended up at Old School Frozen Custard indulging in a sundae with chocolate and vanilla custard, hot fudge, and strawberries. SO GOOD. Oh man. I shared it with my boyfriend and we were basically full for the rest of the afternoon. I can't wait to come back and try some of their flavours of the day.

Bluebird and Molly Moon are right in the neighborhood, but I always choose this place. So good and creamy, does not need all the candy toppings that they offer. Actually I like to get the pints to go best - great selection of different flavors and only $5. You won't hear me complaining about any kind of ice cream but I think frozen custard is my favorite. Also I was in once when the owners were there and they are just as sweet as can be.

I lived in St. Louis, Mo. for ten years, so when my finace's mom offered to bring me a cup of frozen custard from this place, I was eager to see how it stacked up with the venerable Ted Drewes "concrete". I ordered plain ol' vanilla so I could really judge the texture, sweetness and flavor. I was not disappointed! I am thrilled to have this place around so I can once again enjoy a regional taste treat. I haven't actually been to the establishment so I can't make any judgements regarding service, etc.

I can honestly say that Old School Frozen Custard is my favorite place on Cap hill to satisfy my sweet tooth. I typically get the Turtle with extra whipped cream and slide into a sugar coma about 30 minutes later--it's an amazing experience, too!

I've never had frozen custard before, and now I wonder how I ever lived without it?! Absolutely delicious! I had a small cup of vanilla with a brownie broken up on top! :) Definitely will go there agin next time I'm in Seattle area.

You can smell this place down the street, so walking in is like a sensory explosion. I'm not a big ice cream person in general; I'll have a scoop every now and then in the summer, but it's just not my thing. When a frozen custard-obsessed friend of mine insisted on taking me here, I wasn't expecting much. Wow, I was so wrong. Frozen custard, for those of you who have never had it, is much heavier, creamier and thicker than ice cream. As a result, whatever flavor you put into it is a lot stronger. It also means it can fill you up quickly and should definitely be enjoyed on a half empty stomach. I honestly don't have the balls to try any of their sundae creations, but I can only imagine how delicious they are.

  • Clare S.

Fantastic. Nice and thick and extremely smooth. The chocolate is heavenly and the coconut was really tasty. It is $3 for a cone or cup and they have toppings if you want some. The serving is generous. Everyday they have choc and van and a special flavor. j

Delicious, and great customer service. They have a daily rotating flavor-of-the-day that you can sample. They also have a few pints of their flavors available for sale, and I've seen them for sale at Madison Market, too.

  • Joelle A.

I really enjoyed the custard here. I am used to a strong custard flavor from my younger days on the East Coast, and Old School captures that in their custard. I was also excited about the plethora of toppings they have available - including rainbow sprinkles. Looking forward to when I find myself in the area next once the weather warms up.

  • Why T.

i'm not sure what this is.. is it soft serve? is it ice cream? why is it custard??? what makes it custard!?!?! i was hoping to be educated with some sort of a sign.. but i wasn't. you know how froyo places have health benefits... molly moons gimmick is all organic, etc... and the taste? eh? i dont know. they didn't have any adventurous flavors or anything like that. it melted super fast too.

    (3)
  • Kristin N.

Let it be said that they know me. Magic Cookie Bar custard definitely has something "magic" in it...perhaps cocaine. I am so addicted. When the flavor of the day is not stellar (i.e. Juicy lemon? No thanks), I go for the Recess sundae. It may be my entire day's allotment of calories, but it is well worth every hot fudge, caramel-ly, Reeses-filled bite. If this place makes me gain 10 pounds, I don't care. It's that good.

  • Ryan C.

came back within days of my initial visit.. they were open NEW YEAR'S DAY! superb, i thought they were gonna b closed but they are not! got "the recess", it's vanilla custard with reese's (had to google this, so hard to spell!) PBC smashed into it, smothered with fudge! heavenly! as good as "the homeroom" but it was a tat sweet in the end for my taste. i don't think you can go wrong here. am gonna try the banana split next time!

    (5)
  • Erin B.

We were on our way to Old School and just reached the storefront when they turned off their open sign. The nice girl who was closing up let us in anyway and I'm so glad she did! This is the first time I've eaten here and it definitely won't be the last. I love the creamier custard over ice cream and love the different mixtures they make. I was amused by the calendar of flavors near the front register informing customers what flavors were going to be available on what day. I will be going back there sometime soon for sure!

  • Vanessa A.

Tried the mint oreo and key lime. The former was good, the latter a bit lacking. In general I don't find the flavors rich enough. Just seemed like glorified soft serve (yes I realize it's custard and that makes it different and all that, whatever I get it). This place is the closest to where I live but next time I have a craving for a cold dessert I'm going to walk the extra distance to Molly Moon's or even give Bluebird another shot. Their flavors are just punchier.

    (3)
  • Andri P.

YUMMMMMM! What a really nice frozen dessert. It's very smooth and melt in your mouth. It's sweet and very silky. Anyway. My suggestion is just to get the plain vanilla or chocolate with the waffle cone. I think their combination are too sweet. So if you want combination, I would recommend you to make the combination of ur own instead of using their recommended combo.

  • Groundresonance C.

I am a frozen custard junkie, but haven't been in a city with real frozen custard since April and have been totally jonesing and waiting for this place to open. They kept moving their opening date back, but today it finally happened. I was worried that I was going to be disappointed like I was by Peaks, but this is the real deal. I got my fix today and I am a happy boy. My only suggestion is to get rid of the slivered almonds and serve salted roasted almonds that are very coarsely crushed (not over-crushed and powdery). There's nothing like a scoop of vanilla with some roasted almonds!

    (5)
  • Joshua G.

is this what custard tastes like? i think this substance is completely foreign to seattle people. when the line at molly moon's is too much for you to handle, i suggest coming up here. its equally as good but its not over hyped so there is hardly a line. custard generally comes in three flavors. chocolate, vanilla and 'flavor of the day' so, to personalize your order there are a bounty of toppings. i like the buddy buddy which comes with a brownie.

    (4)
  • Neal M.

3.5 Stars: I guess I am more of a fan of regular, old ice cream. The frozen custard was good in the beginning but it was too rich for me to willingly finish the whole thing. Plus, there isn't a wide variety of flavors to choose from so that takes some of the fun away. I did like the waffle cone though.

Really, really, really tasty stuff. We four Midwestern transplants were quite impressed with the frozen custard at Old School. We had the Muddy Buddy in both chocolate and vanilla, the Recess, and a plain vanilla; all were excellent. My friend said "out of this world" twice, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't talking about 80s TV.

Yum. I'm a HUGE ice cream fan (and gelato, and frozen custard....not really too picky) and this place is super. I don't even like malted milk balls but as the flavor of the day in their frozen custard apparently I do. Wanting to go back to try the chocolate peanut butter in a few weeks....

Came here the other day to find out the scoop about frozen custard. I had the chocolate frozen custard and it was rich, soft, creamy and chocolaty. It was tasty, but I'm still more of a fan of good old ice cream. Also, parking can be a little tricky to find in this area.

Truth be told: Two Scoops in a Waffle Cone for $5.24 here is a better dessert than you'll find in 90%+ of Seattle restaurants; So Soft , So Lucious and I haven't yet had a specialty item [Shakes / Sundaes etc] Try & pair the Daily Special at twitter.com/OSFrozenCust… with either Vanilla or Chocolate; My only plea to Owners; ADD A SECOND DAILY SPECIAL! The line is out the door on weekend nights, but worth the wait; Go here to show her you're in love; To be reductionist - This is where you procure dessert - all summer...

What can I say?!? This place is completely responsible for me gaining 3 pounds. Can I blame Old School? Or perhaps my carpool friend Lori for telling me about the heaven that is the Recess sundae? Or should I take responsibility for myself? Hmm... Tough call Regardless, Old School is simply divine. Many a dinner has been exclusively the Recess. I almost gave them 5 stars because the sundae is just plain too big. There is only the one size with 3 scoops. To get the comparable toppings in a 1 or 2 scoop version is almost the same price. I emailed the owner once requesting a smaller version of the Recess and I was DENIED. Something bout him thinking the price point was appropriate. I have thought about asking the employees to donate my extra scoop of ice cream to a poor kid. Alas, I end up sucking it up and getting the whole thing of which I've only once had the willpower to eat half and freeze the rest. Seriously is a full pint cup of ice cream sundae necessary?!? Oh well, it is scrumptious. I think there are about 10 of my friends who can thank me (or I guess carpool Lori) for introducing them to this wonderful place.

OMG Old School Frozen Custard is AWESOME! Thank you Yelp reviewers! I wouldn't have found out about this place if it weren't for you guys. I had a scoop of the vanilla and it was so delicious I had to buy a pint of butter pecan for home. Frozen custard is dense and soft kinda like eating compact soft serve. Best ice cream I've ever had!

I saw Old School Frozen Custard after touring the Seattle University campus. I had to stop by and try a scoop. The flavor of the day was cake batter. Wow, I had a single scoop and it was so rich and delicious. It is too bad I live so far away as I won't get to try other flavors that were listed on their calendar.

  • J.D. D.

Delicious, and old school is right. Very pure. We had chocolate and vanilla, sundaes with killer chocolate sauce. So smooth and simple. We'll be back.

  • Benjamin H.

Although they have an extremely limited selection of flavors, I liked the creative sundae options. I tried the "locker room" which had vanilla, three kinds of nuts, and a healthy portion of hot fudge. Fairly quick service, even on a steamy summer Friday night with a line out of the door. They did run out of the flavor of the day just as we were stumbling in at 10 pm ish.

friendly staff, not overly crowded, I had the turtle, which was good, but a little heavy to my taste. FREE WATER!!! LOVE THE PLACE

Fancy soft serve. Sure, it's rich custardy soft-serve, but it's nothing fancy. Plus they pulverized the Oreo toppings to something akin to cocoa powder, sans cream filling. What gives? I'll take Molly Moon's over Old School any day.

Yum Yum YUM!!! Try the muddy buddy.

  • Ella L.

YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMY! OMG...If you are a frozen custard fanatic go here...Its A-mazing and the best part is they have so many staff and only 3 flavors that if there is a line you won't have to wait long and even if you did it would be worth it! Im in LOVE with Old School!

I felt obligated to give this place another try after my first experience and I must say without a doubt this was definately worth coming back for! However on this visit my girlfriend shielded me away from the front counter to avoid any possible pre-judgemental decision to come back. That was a great idea on her behalf since she actually thought our first visit was delightful. We ordered the chocolate banana nut w/ a scoop of vanilla! Both were very tasty and seating arrangements were not a problem this time due to the fact I was immediately seated upon arriving =(

    (4)
  • Katie M.

The custard sundaes are delicious. They are big enough for two, rich and yummy. There isn't a ton of seating here, but on a nice night, it's fun to get your custard and wander around Seattle. They only have three flavors, but the third flavor is always rotating, and they have fun chalkboard calendar showing you the flavor of the day.

  • Helen N.

I love the chocolate custard sooooooo much. I have recently been more open to the flavor of the day and I am glad because the tin roof, blueberry, etc. are amazing. They are pretty nice with giving a sample so I usually order the flavor of the day but have a sample of the chocolate (shh!). The chocolate is like hot chocolate in the form of a rich frozen desert, strong but not overpowering. All of the custard is rich and true to their flavor.

Shared a "Homeroom" sundae. Custard is super creamy, like first-class soft serve. Not too much fudge. Brownie was pretty good.

all right, folks.... all right. yes, i understand that going from zero to four (though number five is currently being built) frozen delectable shops may be a little overwhelming, i would like to clear the air a little on this frozen custard concern. frozen custard is NOT soft serve. not even close. this creamy, i'd-like-to-surgically-implant-a-second-stomach-so-i-can-keep-consuming-forever-and-ever dessert is actually made with some egg whites as opposed to simply using cream. it actually makes it a bit better for you, and a little easier to digest for those of us who shouldn't be doing the dairy thing, but do anyway... because, well... sometimes, the fake s*&t just doesn't cut it. so, with that information in hand, and a lifetime in the frozen custard capital of the world (wisconsin), i walk in, i order multiple dishes to share with co-workers (we have all been gnawing on our fingers in anticipation of its grand opening), and i finish almost two of the dishes while waiting for the others to be finished being made. (hopefully, they're a bit quicker in their ice-cream scooping/prepping after these last couple of weeks. initially, the time between ordering and receiving seemed to take a while. but, that could've been my impatience for getting my first fresh frozen custard in a couple of years....) so, i really dig the cold stone feel of having so many options available to mix in (they have their own version of a blizzard-type of concoction. always fun...). and banana splits bring me back to pigtails and skinned knees.... (i'm referring to childhood. really.) and, have you ever had a turtle sundae? jesus. they even have hot dogs, chili... i have yet to try em. but, i'll keep you posted... regardless, i love it. and i'm so excited that we finally have some frozen custard in the area. if you haven't been there yet, you should definitely get there soon. and bring a second stomach.

Right down the street from work, which might be a bad thing since I can probably consume everything that comes out of this joint. 3 flavors, chocolate, vanilla and the flavor de la dia. Probably the best thing about frozen custard. IT STAYS SUPER FRESH IN THE FREZER. Freezer burnt ice cream sucks.

I think by far, this is my favorite ice cream place. The Strawberry Sundae with smooth vanilla frozen Custard is the best!.. I love how smooth the custard feels in the mouth.

Went again. Just as legendary. I definitely overdid it :)

  • Nick G.

Well this place was pretty fun. I liked their lively atmosphere but the custard reminded me of every other ice cream shop. Sure it was good, but hey, ice cream is good, period. I thought about the comparison between this place and Molly Moon's and I didn't have to think twice because Molly Moon's is a lot better. Sorry for being such a custard but I'm being real.

  • Alon L.

Great custard, bottom line. Just thick enough to be satisfying, and they have a nice mix of flavors for the different sundaes. Plenty to satisfy your sweet-tooth! The portions are large - so just be warned before you order! The sundaes are slightly on the pricey side, but within reason given the large portions. The decor itself is quaint and appropriate, and I love the Beatles background music! Yeah, I'm a fan for sure.

  • C M.

You know when you see a line out the door that it is going to be good. Fast and friendly service. Great taste with the custard and hot fudge. Wish they had many 2 flavors of the day so there was a bit more to choose from. Worth going back to and I am a big fan now of frozen custard. Much more creamy and smooth then ice cream.

OMG. All I can say is, thank God it's on Capitol Hill, so it's a trek to get to, or I'd have to break out the pregnancy pants. We had the lemon custard FOD in waffle cones. The waffle cones were HOT! As in, fresh off the iron. Take THAT in your 31 flavors. The lemon custard was creamy, just tart enough to be refreshing after our earlier, very rich dinner, but not so tart as to set your teeth on edge. This was a follow-up visit, so I also highly recommend the sundae's. too, especially the one with all of the fresh brownie - YUM, or the Recess, with all of its Reece's peanut butter cup sin. This place is fabu, Skippy, and the crowd packing the place proves it!

    (5)
  • Kristin B.

Being from the mid-west this is the closest thing you'll get to 'real' custard! It is good and would recommend it to people who haven't had custard. They always have vanilla, chocolate and flavor of the day.

    (4)
  • Dae Y.

we got the vanilla on a waffle cone. the custard was really nice. very smooth and rich and soft. the waffle cone was a little chewy. that could be on purpose, or it could be stale. depends on your perspective. next time, no cone maybe. we were siting by the door and there was a guy with his back to us. he had a little kid in his lap facing us. the kid started to open mouth cough at us while he looked at us. we looked at each other and got the hell out. don't need any little kid bacteria making my life any harder than it is.

  • Becki M.

sweet tooth city. i love and hate that this place is so super close to my place. yummm. i mean, it's frozen custard.. kinda hard to mess that up i would think. they have fun flavor choices that change each day and a variety of mixins to make your own concoctions. my daughter is stuck on the recess sundae, chocolatey/caramelly goodness with vanilla custard and crumbled reese's pb cups. i always get the espresso shot over vanilla custard.. forget the name but it's something drizzle. they also have a little cooler over to the side of the check out with pre packed quarts in a variety of flavors.. it's dangerous.

  • Olivia M.

If custard is your thing, you'll be all over Old School Custard. This place is great, especially their cheesecake custard. Parking is terrible, but that is Capitol Hill for ya. I know a lot of people who like Molly Moon's better than Old School, but if you're craving custard then there's nothing on Molly Moon's menu that can substitute the rich, creaminess of Old School Custard.

Deeelish! I *like* it. Nice staff. yay

  • Trevor B.

I'm a true dessert fiend and really enjoy some great frozen treats. Frozen Custard is actually healthier than ice cream. Old School is about 7 minutes from my place and I would drive further for custard of this caliber. They have two regular flavors Chocolate and Vanilla, and a flavor of the day. I constantly check the website for a new great flavor to try. They also have some killer sundaes.

    (4)
  • Anthony M.

Another sweet tooth establishment to Seattle, what the hell is the deal? The recession causing us to crave these sort of foods? In a 5 block radius I can get my basalmic strawberry ice cream, than get a coffee flavored cupcake and then wash it down with frozen custard. I went here last week and tried the "teachers pet", afterwards I felt like I could run around greenlake 3 times. My GF had the basic vanilla custard and now talks about this place everyday, "when are we going back?" She asks me but my mouth is too full of Molly Moon, cupcake royal and trophy cupcakes to answer her.

    (4)
  • Justsun B.

Excellent. We went in thinking it was a froYo place which we normally prefer but after tasting the custard we had no problem ordering the best frozen treat ever! Its so creamy, flavorful, and the highest quality.

    (5)
  • Aaron B.

Peanut Butter and Cream is oh so good! We showed up at 7pm. Ordered. Sat down at the only available table. Ate our ice cream. While we were eating, I noticed the line growing, and growing, and growing...it was out the door (15 people deep) by the time we left. People were hovering over our table. THEY NEED A BIGGER LOCATION so that people can sit and eat and enjoy their custard.

Chunky cheesecake- TO DIE FOR! SOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOD

    (5)
  • Jen S.

Texture is unique. As an amateur ice cream maker myself, I recognize the use of egg yolk to get that custard texture. That's fine. I got vanilla with nothing on it. It was good, but not powerful vanilla flavor, like I expected and wanted. You can judge a place by its vanilla.

    (3)
  • Sarah S.

love it. so creamy and delicious i salivate just thinking about it. molly moon's doesn't stand a chance compared to this place. the custard is a mix between hard and soft serve ice cream. its so yummy you want to stuff you mouth as fast as possible, but avoid that...you'll end up with it all over your face. everytime we go there, there is at least one pregnant one in line. pregnant women know delicious, so i think that says a lot about custard... yummeee. i wish i could think of more amazingly positive things to say. but the bottom line is...i'll walk 6 blocks in the rain to get this custard...

Love the thick texture of the custard. The Strawberry was v. good.

Delightful frozen custard !! Lots of choice of combination of toppings but just a bit pricy...

  • wade m.

This is good stuff! The custard is creamy without coating your mouth like you've sucked on a stick of butter, and it's sweet without sugar-burning your throat. The Sweet and I shared the cheerleader with a scoop each of vanilla and mountain blackberry. It was quite tasty, though we couldn't quite find the white chocolate - maybe it melted into the vanilla custard? Our friends had the one with peanut butter and a brownie. It was great - the brownie was a nice, chewy partner to the smooth, creamy custard. Perfect for a late-night stroll in Capitol Hill

  • Laura P.

Yum Yum Yum is all I can say. This place rocks! The frozen custard is so rich and creamy i could hardly stop eating. They have three flavors a day- vanilla, chocolate and the flav of the day. i tried the Vanilla and Orange dreamsicle and they were both great. I will definately be coming back here regularly.

You MUST go to this place. We found it last month and have been 3-times now - and we do not live close. Make sure you check the calendar for what's on today (we'd go more but we aren't always into the featured item); though, they always have vanilla and chocolate.

I recently tried this place for the first time. The custard was good, but the service was bad. The cashier was a bit rude and they gave me the wrong flavor (they only have three flavors -- how hard is it to mess up?). Oh well. It's worth a second try, I suppose.

Came across this place on my walk back from Gas Works Park. As soon as I walked in, the staff greeted me warmly and gave me a handful of tasting spoons (all delicious). I recommend the chocolate with no toppings. It is really perfectly balanced and not overly sweet.

  • Inna B.

Ooh la la. Delicious! Cute space. I loved seeing photos of the different old Seattle schools! Their scoops are BIG! Big and delicious. I had a scoop of the chocolate and loved it. I was a bit bummed that I couldn't finish the whole thing. The Georgia Peach (special of the day) was a little bit weird and I couldn't handle much of it, but it was good in small amounts. Lesson learned: Custard is delicious, but probably best when shared! Surprise: There were about 7 other customers at about 8:30pm on a Tuesday. Personal shock: The young female employee with long brown hair looks soooo much like my younger cousin that lives in Nice, France. Weird!!!

Despite any downsides (and there are a few), I love this place. Parking can be tough at night when everyone is out, long lines, not enough staff, etc. I've had some of their shakes with more ingredients, but I really like the custard on its own. The shakes with added junk distract from delicious simplicity of the custard. The specials are worth checking out on the calendar on their website before you go. The staff have been slammed with orders every time I've been in, but never mess up and are friendly and attentive.

Old School Frozen Custard took my frozen custard virginity today. I was glad to THROW it at them! It was so tasty. People keep raving about frozen custard and I'd never had it before. The texture is heavenly. I tried a sample of their vanilla flavor. Every day they offer vanilla, chocolate and special flavors of the day. In a small freezer at the front they have a selection of other prepackaged flavors as well. I bought a pint of pumpkin pie. Can't wait to dig into it! My brother, and partner in frozen custard crime, tried the mint. YUM! It was also excellent. I will be back here soon. VERY SOON!

Weirdly SO much better than ice cream. So much smoother and delicious yummm. The people here are always so crunchy and nice!

Brings a whole new meaning to the word "recess". Did you know it involved layers of vanilla custard, crumbled Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, caramel sauce, hot fudge, and whipped cream? Me neither. Too bad I didn't run around for an hour afterward to burn it off...but every bite was worth it! This is a great dessert spot on the Hill! If you're not acquainted with it, frozen custard is excellently creamy, much softer than ice cream and therefore immediately spoon-friendly. Old School has a plethora of combinations, like sundaes (their own or your invention), concretes (custard and toppings all swirled together), shakes, espresso drizzles, and even a tasty treat with Kahlua and other goodies. What they don't have are a lot of flavors every night: your choices will be chocolate, vanilla, and whatever the lovely flavor of the day happens to be (for that, check out their website where they'll let you know what flavor appears which day). But with all the mixing choices, who cares? And why did we hike up there? As far as I'm concerned, when it's sunny and in the 40s in March at 6:30 in the evening, it's summer....

Chocolate custard is really a flavor that grows on you. After Johnny W.'s fabulous review, we naturally had to visit this place. At first, I wasn't crazy about it. It tasted like regular chocolate ice cream, albeit a bit smoother and lighter. However, as you keep eating, the custard flavor really starts to come out. I love love love the creamy texture! By the end of one scoop, I was a fan. =) I also had a sample of the Georgia Peach but it was a bit unnatural tasting. Stick to their chocolate =) Sigh, I think I need another taste right now. Where can I find this in LA?

Better than Molly Moon's 100%. Molly Moons is overrated and a trendy Capitol Hill Spot. Trendy doesn't mean quality always. But anyways enough bashing them, and more raving about Old School. I live really close to this gem and let me tell you something. A pint a day keeps me happy. Every flavor I have tried (Cinnamon Oreo, Chocolate, Vanilla, Red Velvet Cake, Cake Batter, Mint Chocolate Chip) has been exceptional. Please be sure to try this place out! **Btw: their flavor calendar and 2-3 flavor a day concept is GENIUS, it keeps us coming back**

  • Willis S.

This place really knows how to churn out good frozen custard! The strawberry shortcake custard was to die for and reminded me of one I had at a tractor show of all places (which was really good). The combination of a homemade shortcake, homemade vanilla custard, and glazed strawberries was simply divine. I'm currently craving this special treat as we speak which is most likely why this review is being written.

Ohhhhhhh. My. Gawd!!! Yes, that's what I have to say!!! This place absolutely ROCKS! Sure, parking is hard to find (unless you want to pay $5 to park in the lot next door...... and this particular area of Capital Hill is usually packed, at night, because there are tons of bars, restaurants, etc... right there, but it's worth it! We were actually headed to Molly Moon's to get some ice cream, and saw the RIDICULOUS line, and thought that there was no way we'd waste our time in such a long line. So, we looked up other ice cream joints in the area, on YELP, and found this little slice of heaven. It was crowded, but the line was so fast (and it wasn't that long). Most of the people that were inside, and outside, already had their treats, and were enjoying them, while chattering away with friends. It took only a second to decide what to get... but I had to try the daily special of juicy lemon. It was rather good, but not what I was craving. So, I ordered up The Cheerleader..... vanilla ice cream with strawberries and white chocolate. My wife ordered the Muddy Buddy which was a chocolate brownie, topped with vanilla custard, peanut butter and hot fudge. Both were wonderfully delish, and quite filling after our dinner. I loved that they give you a cute name for your order. Ours was Lady Gaga. Gives ya something to laugh about when they have your order ready and call out to you.

HHHHEEEELLLLLLAAAAA delicious. If you like ice cream, you like gelato, you'll like frozen custard. Fact #1. Creamy and smooth to the tongue Fact #2. Less calories (bang for the bite) Fact #3. Comes in delicious flavors - and they have a special flavor that changes daily. Sooooo good. Fact #4. They make their cones fresh (like Molly Moon's) Fact #5. They're socially conscious and green - recycled utensils, napkins.... It just feels good to eat old school frozen custard. My go-to favorite flavor is chocolate at this place. Mmmm..... Definitely share a serving - unless you're one of those peeps that can house it. .... as you know... sharing is caring. ^_^

I had never heard of frozen custard. The lady behind the counter seemed offended when I asked whether it was like frozen yogurt. They have different flavors on different days, displayed on their huge blackboard. I had the Mountain Berry but I couldn't taste it since I was sick but I can tell you that it is much heavier than froyo. Check this place out and see if fro-tard is better than froyo.

    (4)
  • Andrew L.

Maybe its just not my style but i found it OK. Many people i talk to say that its "AMAZING" I had the Root Beer float with their custard. it was good. but it wasn't much different from normal one. I had a few bites of their seasonal strawberry short cake with the custard and it was also ok. The custard itself was very unique and was good. But the cake is dry and i wasn't a fan of it.

    (3)
  • Kevin P.

I go here whenever I'm on the hill. They have great flavors and smooth creamy frozen custard. This time I got the special flavor of the day, chocolate malt balls. It was smooth and had subtle flavors I would expect from a malt. The only problem is the tummy ache i get whenever i eat here. Well worth it.

    (4)
  • Renee L.

The flavors did not appeal to me and it was a bit sweet. It taste more of soft serve yogurt than "frozen custard." Venue is small and limited seating. Staff was nice and friendly.

  • Holly R.

Silky deliciousness, almost zero wait (a refreshing surprise, since I'm used to at least 20 minutes of line-standing at Molly Moon's), and nice peeps. Color me converted. Like others have said, it's helpful to check their flavor-du-jour calendar online first--I recently had a hankering for pumpkin desserty goodness and was a little surprised they're only doing pumpkin on Halloween. Still, the basic vanilla is rich and amazing, and their root beer float irrevocably raises the bar. DESSERT WIN.

  • Lily S.

We pass by this place a lot. A LOT. But last nite we decided "oh hell, let's just go in." This after we ate fairly healthy salads and went on a walk...sigh...whatever. First of all, it smelled heavenly. Second, every little concoction on the blackboard sounded heavenly. Then C ordered the chocolate raspberry. I'm lactose intolerant, mind you, but I WANTED A BITE!! Or two. Or three. And maaaan, it was well worth the stomachache that surprisingly never came! Creamy & delicious, and a wee denser than ice cream, I was pleasantly surprised. Tomorrow - SPICED PUMPKIN! I'M. SO. IN. (stomachache to follow, for sure).

    (5)
  • A D.

Easily my favorite place... in the world. Though there are really only three flavors offered everyday, it really doesn't matter because the custard is always so good!! I always get "the turtle," which is a sundae-esqe desserty thing. The workers are super nice and add to the chill environment.

    (5)
  • Kayan H.

The Recess was soooooo good! Custard was soft and didn't have a weird taste (I was concerned that it would. I hate red mango for it....) and they were very generous with toppings.

    (4)
  • Tu Uyen H.

I'm a very vocal eater. How? I moan loudly when consuming good food. It can be embarrassing. Well, I should avoid this place to avoid embarrassing myself. On second thought, I'd rather risk that than to skip eating here. The custard here is so rich and creamy, making it impossible to not develop an addiction! To compare the texture of custard to ice cream is like comparing bed sheets with different thread count! Imagine custard as the silky smooth 1200 Egyptian cotton vs the scratchy, rough 300 (or lower) thread count that is ice cream. Can't wait to get my tongue on some of that silky dairy goodness again.

This is one of those establishments that causes me to curse my diabetes. I popped in last night with Becky L and Kathleen M. They both had the chocolate and I tried the flavor of the day, blackberry cheesecake. Both were delicious, although I felt mine could have used a little more blackberry. We entertained ourselves by reading their menu of sundaes--each seemingly more decadent than the last. However, they all looked like they'd put me into a sugar-induced coma, so I was content with a single scoop in a cup (and they are pretty good-sized scoops too, so unless you're a linebacker or sharing with someone I would think twice about getting a sundae).

    (4)
  • Neil W.

This was pretty damn good custard! They have a great selection of sundaes and the flavors were delicious. I should have stuck to my guns and ordered the Drizzle, as recommended by a fellow Yelper, but my glutinous side kicked in and I ordered the three scoop Reeses sundae. Oh so rich and I only got a third of the way through it (an embrassing failure on my part). The prices are a bit high in my opinion, but I guess when there is a line you charge what the public will pay.

    (4)
  • Cat A.

They have a specific flavor set for each day, aside from the regular frozen custards of chocolate and vanilla. They have blended drinks with interesting names as well as various sundaes. We chose their flavor of the day, "our strawberry" in sundae form. Delicious! But I don't know if it's better than Molly Moons. Just sayin'

  • Anne N.

Some part of me will forever jiggle because of places like these. Chocolate. Vanilla. Mountain blueberry. Cafe Vita espresso. I love them so much, I'm thinking of shrinking their flavor of the day calendar (found on their website) down to a 3.75'' x 2.25'' business card. Laminate it. And carry it in my wallet. My sister and I tried their "Muddy Buddy" sundae today ($5.50). Imagine. A moist 4'' x 4'' piece of brownie. With creamy peanut butter spread on top. Topped with gooey fudge. Then comes the creamy vanilla frozen custard. Then whip cream. Sigh.

I lived in the midwest where Frozen custard is a staple. To be honest, they still make the best Frozen custard ever, but Old School definitely gives the shops in the midwest a run for their money. The atmosphere is a "school-like" atmosphere with chalkboards and small wooden tables to eat at. The employees are enjoyable and nice. I love that the flavors rotate depending on the day and the time of year. I'm not a big fan of different flavors, but they are quite tasty. If you haven't been, you definitely have to visit soon. If there is a line, there often is...it will be worth the wait- trust me.

Good but not great custard, we went there on a food tour, I think we all liked sitting down more than the custard

My friends must be the most patient people in the world. I'll admit it, I can be obnoxious. A recent example of my ridiculousness: Friend's text: What time are you thinking that you want to hang out? Me: Ice cream. Friend: Ummm. Riight. So, does happy hour at 5:30 work? Me: Ice cream. Friend: Em, you know it's only 8:00am, yeah? Me: Ice cream. And that is how my friend and I ended up at Pike Place Custard. While frozen custard may not be ice cream, it's pretty close and I'm not picky when it comes to sweet, frozen dairy. There are three flavors to choose from every day of the week, which could get boring, but the magic happens in the toppings. I tried the coconut with a raspberry topping. I approve. At about five bucks a pop for a single serving, I don't think Old School is worth a special trip or a drive across town, but I'd be a fan if I lived in the neighborhood.

  • Amanda M.

Usually I prefer Molly Moons around the corner, HOWEVER! They do a special once a day and MY LORD the banana cream pie is AMAZING! I have never had a better frozen custard in my life. Whenever available, I go and buy a pint of it. Their usual chocolate and vanilla are good but nothing special. Also, there isn't a lot of sitting room so if it is raining, you may have to take it to go and hurry home. They have a schedule for the month available so I encourage you to stop in and see when a flavor calls to you and grab it!

Ever pull up to a place, parallel park in the perfect spot (one take, son), and just know whatever your about to encounter is meant to be? Late Friday evening, my other half and I stopped in to check out the hype. My skeptical other half had no clue what was so special about custard, so I took a few minutes out to explain to him that custard is like tasting the clouds that float high above Seattle on a perfect summer day, and that there were some extra egg yolks thrown in to make it silky smooth. The flavor of the day was orange creamsicle, and it rocked our socks. It tasted like the best days of my childhood. Not too tangy, super smooth, and a consistent texture (no shade Molly Moons). The two ladies behind the counter were really nice, not at all distant and hipster like which is normally what I encounter in this neighborhood. I'll be back. PS- they use social media to get the word out on the FOD.

Last night, I went out with a couple friends. We wound up @ Peaks Frozen Custard, and realized we hadnt tried this place yet. So, regardless of the fact that we were already custard filled, we drove over to try it out. I thought the prices to be a bight on the high side. My sunday, the cheerleader, was on the short side of decent. Vanilla custard, white chocolate syrup, strawberries, and whip. Strawberries are now in season, but the sauce on my sunday was more like something pre-made (think Smuckers), which I thought was disappointing. Since there was quite some emphasis on quality and freshness written on the entry way chalkboard, why not use fresh strawberries? Im game! The white chocolate sauce also didnt add anything- there was too much of it, and it just absorbed the flavor of the too sweet strawberry sauce. The custard was... all I can think of is McDonald's quality soft serve. That's what I was reminded of. A bit creamier, a little less vanilla-ey, and not in a swirly pattern, but very similar. I was really hoping for more, but in a pinch this place would work.

Feeling blue, I needed a pick-me-up, so I suggested my boyfriend we go get some ice cream. We were lucky enough to find a parking spot right across from this joint. We parked, looked both ways, crossed the street quickly to arrive at Old School Frozen Custard. It is a very clean and cozy place with huge blackboards showing different flavours available each day of the month and a bunch of enticing custard concoctions with funny names. It was a bit confusing to figure out exactly which flavours they had that particular day, so we had to ask. It turns out they have only 3 flavours (vanilla, chocolate, and special flavour of the day) every day. THREE Hm... I guess we all have been spoiled by Baskin-Robbins. Anyway, we decided to get the one with brownie, hot fudge, and whipped cream. It was very yummy and made me happy. The custard itself didn't have a strong "SHUT-UP-IMMA-CUSTARD" flavour (whatever that means...), but it was creamy, soft, and gentle. It did pick me up and made me happy. :-)

I ended up here because Kingfish was closed, I'd heard of Old School for awhile and thought it'd be a good opportunity to check it out and seeing as how we drove past it, I thought it's a sign we should be here! Anyways the decor is really clean, not cluttered which is a plus. The custard though was alright. I mean I don't know if I was expecting a lot, but it just tasted like regular ol' vanilla ice cream to me. I got the vanilla on a waffle cone, and my friend got the cheerleader. Maybe next time, if there is a next time I'll try the homeroom or the playground. But I have a hard time validating spending so much on frozen custard again, especially at a place that was just alright n my opinion.

Pretty impressive! Considering the crowds that come through here, they take and serve orders very quickly. This was my third intimacy with frozen custard. Before tonight it was Tart on Division in PDX (Oh Portland, how I miss you right now and I've only been away a day) and then Peak's over on NE 65th. I think Old School - at least their vanilla - ranks right up there at the top. Really for me, it's the texture that makes frozen custard so appealing. I've heard that frozen custard has been around for eons in the Midwest. I'm curious why it took so long to get out here. A couple little things Old School does need to work on. Like another Yeep mentioned, while quaint, the menu board is cluttered and should be simplified. Oh and the toppings - my crumbled Oreos were soggy, like they had been left out in the open too long. Hey, Native Americans used to do rain dances. I wonder if eating frozen custard achieves the same result? When I walked into Old School, it was stultifyingly hot outside. Fifteen minutes later when I left, it was showering, windy and like twenty degrees cooler. Nice!!

This is the REAL DEAL custard!!! but... In Michigan we have a few really good custard places that I used to haunt with my friends on hot sticky nights. This store has the custard right, but has quite a bit to improve on. #1 price: $6.50 for a teeeeny cup of custard! Every place i've ever been to charged almost the same price as ice cream. My favorite place in MI charges $4.00 for a LARGE (3 scoops) blizzard thing with up to 3 toppings. At this place for $6.50 you get 2 toppings and a small small cup (maybe 1 scoop). #2 toppings: Okay you had a few little candy bars lined up on the ledge there, but what about some more creative toppings? And how about when you buy a sundae or a blizzard type mixed item adding/leaving more chunks of item? It was so blended it was a milkshake... It was good, real custard... but I honestly don't think I will be back for the above reasons. Getting custard back home when I visit once a year is enough. If not, it almost would be cheaper to buy an icecream maker and figure out how to make it myself... Key Points: Staff: Average Food: Real deal custard - YUM Drinks: N / A Overall: Meh.

You guys. YOU GUYS. I had never had frozen custard before, and I had NO idea what I was missing. Holy crap. Smooth, creamy, eggy, freezy awesomeness! I would argue that this is far superior to most ice creams - it's like soft-serve, but somehow richer. They only do vanilla, chocolate, and a flavor of the day, which is usually an indicator of a SERIOUSLY GOOD PRODUCT. No need for fancy flavors, just order the vanilla and prepare for your mind to be blown by how good vanilla dessert can be. You can also get all sorts of awesome toppings (i.e. the super-tasty Shoo-fly Pie Co.'s Strawberry-Rhubarb pie filling). If you're feeling fancier, their sundaes are also kind of the best thing ever. We had the peanut butter/brownie one and oh dear sweet dessert gods is that thing good!

Interesting Frozen Custard place that opens until 11pm Sat-Sun. I had their flavor of the day (Key Lime) on a freshly made waffle cone and was fan of it. =D Friends had their sundae blends and I tried a bit and thought was good too. A coworker had recommended this place before but I never went until now. Will definitely visit again to try more of their flavors of the day.

Omigod. With just one bite of their Cheerleader Sundae (vanilla frozen custard, strawberries, white chocolate, and whip cream), I'm in love! L.O.V.E. I say! So creamy! So smooth! So sinfully tasty! It's a good thing this place is 18 miles away from my house because I would go here every day and weigh 300 lbs as a result.

The frozen custard was Awsome! But they were super slow, and the toppings were skimpy. They messed up my order, which was not difficult. I'll try them again - they are pretty new, and like I said the cutard was yummmy

An excellent place for custard and sundaes, with a few excellent school-themed sundaes and plenty of toppings for make-your-own.

I do not have much of a sweet tooth, but when I do, Old School hits the spot. With the slightly warmer weather, it has hit my spot three times in the last week! So far, I have been sticking to the custard flavors, which have been spot on. Chocolate, vanilla, tin roof (my favorite so far), butter pecan, kahlua chip (wow), hawaiian coconut (delicious!!!!), key lime (not quite as good, but still yummy). Definitely worth checking out the calendar of flavors of the day on their website ( oldschoolfrozencustard.c… ) - I can't wait to try the chunky cheesecake! The waffle cones are nice and crispy and the servings are generous. The staff is nice and quick and there is a water dispenser for the thirsty and the sloppy eaters (oops). Hooray for delicious creamy custard!

Being from Wisconsin, frozen custard is definitely my favorite frozen treat. It is way better than ice cream, so much more rich and creamy. I drive from the Eastside just to get frozen custard since I haven't found any places near me. Old School is great and has a lot of amazing sundae combinations.

Oh man. This place has great sundaes (I have the Muddy Buddy - vanilla with warm peanut butter and a brownie at the bottom) but their flavors of the day can be awesome. I wasn't blown away by the white chocolate raspberry, but I bought some mint Oreo and it was so good, I went back the next day and got two more. And the prices aren't bad at all, and they have parking!

went here this past weekend hoping to find their hawaiian coconut flavor - i think it's their best of the rotating daily flavors but ended up with chunky cream cheese. not bad, but didn't have a chunk of cream cheese in the frozen custard. kudos to old school for the big, hard to miss calendar showing what flavors will be coming up

I wanted to try Old School ASAP after I read the Molly Moon's vs. Old School Ice Cream Wars write up in The Stranger. I def. love Molly Moon's but am always up for delicious frozen treats, must be my years working at the DQ when I was in high school. My husband and I went after work on a Monday, say about 5:30 ish. No rush - fab! Cutest server ever, love my fellow multiracial folks:) They have school-themed everything - names of sundaes (homeroom, cheerleader, playground), old school benches, old school chairs, chalkboard menu (much like Ms. Moon's). We shared the Playground sundae which was vanilla and chocolate custard with gummy worms, chocolate syrup, and crushed Oreos. We also had a Nathan's hot dog with cream cheese, onion, mustard, relish, and ketchup. Both hot dog and custard sundae were yum and a perfect after school/work treat! They also have chili to go on your hot dog plus they sell frozen custard pie for your special one's birthday. The texture of frozen custard is much like the DQ soft serve I gorged on in my high school job youth, just creamier and thicker. They should definitely do a version of the Peanut Buster Parfait. I would be there daily!

love love love it!!! i didn't know about this place until a friend was raving about it a few weeks ago, so he drives there & picks some up, drops it off while i'm working -- i was in heaven! i had a the basic chocolate & vanilla, butt definitely going back for more!

Not a lot of flavors but what they have is delicious. Can't say that I've ever had anything better. They always have chocolate and vanilla and then every day is a new flavor of ice cream (or mix of a few things). Really creative. I see their website tells you the flavor of the day and flavor for each day of the current month.

Walking in, I was amazed that an establishment could survive with literally only two flavors of frozen custard. After trying the chocolate, I've decided that they know what they're doing, and they're doing it right. Sure, for people who want variety there's the rotating flavor (I had a taste of the apple pie; it wasn't very exciting), and what more do you need than the basics with so many toppings to choose from! After seeing such an extensive selection, my mind was turning for what the best combination would be at that particular moment. It turned out to be marshmallow topping on chocolate, with graham crackers crushed on top. A s'more tribute that not only rivals the actual s'more, but kicked its dry and gooey ass all the way back to the campfire it came from. I thought I won the best sundae award until my friend's came out with cookie dough on top... I did not even see that back there! Well, I know what I'm getting on my next trip.

I've been really curious about this place since it opened. I finally managed to find parking (illegally at BOA lot with fake trip to ATM) so I was excited to try this place. I got a vanilla on waffle cone. It was really creamy, but just tasted like vanilla ice cream. I guess my palate isn't trained well enough to detect the subtle difference between ice cream and frozen custard. I think I'd be just as happy with a fudge bar from QFC.

We really, really wanted to like Peaks in Ravenna, with its funky, friendly atmosphere. But the custard at Old School is just light-years better. I've lived in frozen custard bastions in the Midwest and the Mountain West and Old School is the real deal. Check the flavor schedule on their website; if the flavor of the day sounds good to you (Peanut Butter Chocolate), go go go. If it doesn't sound like your thing (Hawaiian Coconut) well, Molly Moon is just a couple blocks away now.

Yum!! Stumbled in here not knowing what we were in for after eating at Piecoras - it was definitely a nice surprise. They messed up and gave me a double when I ordered a single, which was way more than I could eat, but delicious anyways. I had the coconut and the chocolate - both were great. I will definitely go back if I'm in the neighborhood!

Went here when they were offering free cones a couple of weeks ago, and what a great place to discover! I tried their Mint Chocolate chip, and it was terrific. This would definately earn five stars if the portions were bigger. But either way, it's worth a trip!

the place is actually quite small. but it's really2 good. i tried the teacher's pet, and it's very nice. the espresso itself is just ordinary espresso, but they mixed it with kahlua and their frozen custard makes it extraordinary. definitely comeback for more.
