Great place for a family dinner. Our group of nine dined in at about 8:00 and were very impressed with the food and the performance. I ordered the salmon hibachi, and other members of the party ordered scallops, steak, lobster tail and chicken. Most of us got the fried rice instead of steamed for the extra $2.50 and we all devoured it. It added up to $200+ which is not surprising for hibachi, but it would've been more expensive at Benihana. The restaurant was very clean and the server and chef were really friendly. There was only one waitress who maintained all three parties that were there (including us) so our soups and salads were a bit of a wait, but she kept our waters topped off and checked in the perfect amount. I took half of my dinner home and it was just as good the next day!

Stopped by for weekend lunch as ID was packed - very easy parking in the back of the restaurant was attractive. Ordered chicken teriyaki and gyoza combo - nice volume and the teriyaki sauce was just right in sweetness (not too sweet) - salad dressing was a nice onion and maybe anchovy mix that I liked a lot. We also had nabeyaki udon - broth was standard and overall it was good - nice touch they out the tempura shrimp on the side so it wouldn't get soggy too soon. Overall good was fresh and good - Id be interested in coming back to try the teppanyaki for dinner! UPDATE: Came back for dinner and glad that I did! The teppanyaki combos were excellent - seafood was fresh and the filet mignon was very very tender. On top of that the cook's table performance was fun. Overall excellent value for the quality and quantity. Bumping up to 4 stars!

Feeling like yummy teppanyaki the husband and I ventured over to Mikado in the International district. The restaurant was completely empty when we arrived and during our entire meal which we loved!! It felt like a private dining experience and we were very well taken care of by our waitress as well as our chef. We started off with the hamachi roll for an appetizer and it was delicious!! I ordered the shrimp and scallops combination with miso soup sans tofu and fried rice. The hubby ordered the filet mignon and chicken combination with the tori soup and steamed rice. Both dishes also came with a salad and ginger dressing. Everything from the soup to the veggies to the seafood to the meat was scrumptious, hit the spot and was plentiful. There was no way we could finish everything. The restaurant has a sushi bar area, regular seating and then seating for teppanyaki. It can be a bit pricey but the food, quality and quantity as well as fresh sushi and drinks makes it well worth date night. Honestly $71 with tax did not seem bad at all for everything we had. We will be back.

I'm surprised that this place isn't busier. My wife, boys and I came here this Tuesday evening. I ordered the sink or swim (land and sea). It comes with a soup and salad, plus the mains and fried rice. It's a small charge of $2.50 above what plain steamed rice would be. The chef was very good, and friendly. I would say he was better than any chef we have had at Benihana's. If I am ever in Seattle on vacation again, and in the area. I will definitely come back. The vegetables that accompanied dinner consisted of zucchini, onions, carrots, and broccoli. Oh yeah, the waitress was very efficient and friendly as well.

First time trying it. Least to say, I love it. Lots of food, for a good price. Its definitely a more chiller spot than Benihannas, but hey, theres parking, no wait, and the workers there were even funny! I sure cant complain. Ive always wanted to try this place out, and for a friends bday, a great excuse for it! I had the chicken and shrimp combo for $19. Came with soup, salad, rice, veggies, and also noodles. Lots to eat. It was very tasteful! All in all, everyone left happy and full !! I would definitely come back and try the other items on.the menu as well!

What a great find. Relaxed, comfortable, clean and the food was fantastic. I ordered sushi as an appetizer before the teppanyaki - couldn't eat it all. Lots of food, everything was perfect. My wife's new favorite place. Reasonable prices, good service and great food. What else is there to say.

Very nice family dinner at the steakhouse. It was quiet atmosphere but cook and service were pretty good. We all enjoyed.

Although the location of this restaurant is in an off area, right on Rainer Avenue, and the building is a little older don't let it fool you. My boyfriend and I went in here for dinner tonight and we were the only two there. The staff was very friendly and attentive to serving us. Compared to Benihana's or any other Japanese steakhouse the pricing is incomparable it was $19 for chicken and shrimp and a $2.50 add on for fried rice. If you would have gone to other places it would have run up $30+. The food portions were large and very flavorful. I will be going back here again soon!

This is a fun hidden gem! It's great for kids and would be perfect for large groups of people. (think birthday celebrations!) The food was good and the show even better! Can't wait to go back.

So glad my new friend Bob introduced me to this Best Kept Seattle Secret! For the price and the food, this place should have been busier. The table chef was entertaining and generous and the waitress Kim is so attentive and genuinely happy. I had the filet mignon and scallops which were cooked a true medium rare for perfect texture and flavor. Sauces were perfect, though food was quite flavorful on its own, and not over salted or spiced. I even enjoyed ginger dressing as it is not overpowering. Definitely opt for the fried rice made in front of you too - worth it! Free parking lot helps get you there.

It was ok. First thing I noticed when I walked in was a cat pee smell... maybe they use ammonia to clean, or it's just that it's an older building. Kindda kills the appetite when I'm reminded of the neighborhood cat lady's house, though. Place was empty when I go there, and only one other group came in the whole time I was dining - granted I went about 9pm on a weekday night, so that had a lot to do with it. At least the service was friendly and attentive. It's nicely decorated, and they were playing Utada Hikaru songs at enough volume to just keep the atmosphere. I didn't opt for a hibachi table, so I can't comment on that, though I heard (but couldn't see) the other group and it seems a lively, enthusiastic performance. I ordered a grilled salmon dish. The salmon tasted like it was frozen, not fresh! That was disappointing, especially for $17. I might come back to try the (sushi?) buffet, or the hibachi, but it's not on the top of my list.

So delicious they give you so much food and they are way cheaper than benihanah. We will definitely be coming back here!!

We found this location when Benihana was booked for the night and we really wanted hibachi grill food. We are SO glad to find this treasure. Very hidden from the main road it is certainly no uppity over prices Benihana! Food is great and portions are VERY fair! We had the chicken and fried rice and kids had shrimp with fried rice. The soup/salad, main meal and veggies were all cooked perfectly and seasoned on point! The presentation was fun and the atmosphere was great because it wasn't extremely loud or crowded like the big places. We came on a Saturday evening around 6pm and it was perfect. Kids loved the show and we loved the price and service. We've been back multiple times since our first visit. Highly recommended if your willing to take a chance on a small place. PS: parking is limited

OMG!!! The Food is Amazing!!! The Staff was Awesome and the portions were huge. There were 5 of us that dined there last night and 3 of us got the Sink or Swim Combination, which consisted of Miso Soup for a Starter, then Salad with a house made ginger dressing. We each got 2 Shrimps as an appetizer. After that our dinner started with All kind of grilled veggies, then came the fried rice...yum. Then came the good stuff, the Shrimp, Lobster and the melt in your mouth Steak, then to top it all off it comes with Ice Cream. Yes I know Ice Cream. 2 of us had the Mango Ice Cream which was so creamy and my husband got the Green Tea Ice Cream. You're probably wondering what the other 2 people ordered. Well I'm glad you asked because One got Steak and Chicken Combo and the other got Steak and Shrimp, which theirs dinner came with everything we got except the Ice Cream, so they ordered Fried Bananas with Ice Cream and Caramel Sauce which looked Yummy. The decor was Beautifully decorated with Japanese inspired items like the traditional paper lanterns. Carved wood wall coverings and a teak wood water fountain as you first entered. We were greeted and seated right away. Everything came in a timely manner and we will definitely be back again and again. I know it looks like a hole in the wall on the outside but its a whole different world on the inside. Dont judge a book by its cover. Try it for yourself...I guarantee you will love it!!!

Not much love for Mikado on Yelp? This may be my favorite restaurant in Seattle so far! The boyfriend and I discovered it in the "Not for Tourists" guidebook when I first moved here, and decided to try it out. It's out of the way and not in the best of buildings, but don't let it fool you-- it's one of the best hole-in-the-wall places I've ever been too. The teppanyaki chef is amazing; he doesn't do onion volcanoes and doesn't throw shrimp in your mouth (this is a good thing, in my opinion) but just his crazy knife skills give you enough of a show. On our last trip, a group of us tried out filet mignon, shrimp, salmon, and ahi tuna, and everything was incredible-- I'm pretty sure you could cut the filet with a spoon. The $2.50 extra for fried rice is worth it as well. We also tried out a spicy tuna roll for an appetizer, and it was the spiciest one I've ever had, and also the most delicious. One of my friends just had sushi instead of teppanyaki, and was happy with both of her rolls. On our first trip we also had the gyoza, and they were great as well. Mikado has been empty both times I've been there, and I have no idea why. Even though it's pricey, I would highly recommend it.

WARNING: THEY SET OUR BIRTHDAY GIFT ON FIRE. The food was absolutely amazing, it was delicious. The chef decided to do a (possibly unauthorized?) fire stick twirling show at the end, which made us all a little nervous. Next thing we know, one of the fire sticks is flying at our group and ends up in a gift bag that had a present in it as we were celebrating someones birthday. The chef just stood there, not doing anything, while the bag went up in flames. By the time he finally reacted, the restaurant was full of smoke and it was literally raining ash on us. So while I definitely loved the food (and wished I could have finished eating), it wasn't really worth it. Afterwards, they made us sit for over 30 minutes just waiting to get our check (which they didn't comp ANY of, not even for the birthday girl). I'm sure the chef was just having an off day, but it was enough to never make me want to go here again. Honestly, I don't think I will ever even go to a Teppakyaki place again. (I'm giving two stars because I understand it was a mistake and the food was amazing. Just want to warn people about what happened to us.)

I attended a birthday gathering for a friend at Mikado this week and I had a really good time. The chef put on a great performance and made lots of noise and fancy moves with his cooking utensils. Watching him made me feel like a little kid. I never knew how much fun it could be to let someone else play with your dinner. I had the Filet Mignon and Shrimp combo with White Rice. I wish I had order the fried rise because it looked fantastic. What a cool experience! I have never been to a Japanese grill where they prepare the food in front of you like that. I was pretty jazzed to get this first glance. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to try out the sushi or the pho. Maybe next time. I recommend Mikado if you enjoy being thoroughly entertained while eating great food.

Stopped by for a quick bite. Food was prepared fast. The combo box with both salmon, steak, noodle, rice, and with salad on the side with hot green tea. Just right for a nice meal with good value. I like the two different sauces served for the fish and steak. A meal filled with Omega 3, protien, carbo, veggie, and antioxidant green tea. If you choose to watch for a good perfomance from an experienced chef prepared right at your table, it would be even better. That would make it a perfect meal. What else can one ask for? Food: 4 Cleanliness: 4 Services: 5

Huge disappointment. The restaurant is pretty old, but that's okay. But the service was just really frustrating. It looks like it's family-owned and the older female waitress is just so indifferent, took too long to come as for our order, and was just so indifferent. She wasn't unfriendly, but she just wasn't attentive. One of the chefs, the Polynesian guy was friendly but he messed up with his tricks a lot. But he was still the best part of the whole place because he was friendly. The food- I wish they have different seasonings for the vegetables and seafood. They just put the same seasoning for everything and by the middle of the meal I was bored. The noodles were horrible. I would not go back here.

Pretty good, another restaurant we wanted to go to was closed. We stopped in here because we were so hungry. Pleasantly surprised, clean, good service and like I said the food was pretty good. Id like to come back for sushi since we got stir fry. They were also accommodating to us since we have a little one.

Took the family here after reading all the reviews on the place and it was pretty slow on a Sunday night but the food was delicious, the fried rice was great, we went with filet mignon and it did not disappoint! Brought kids and wife and was first experience in Japanese steakhouse and they had a blast! Definitely a place off the grid would recommend to anyone Don't recommend lobster though was pretty salty

Great food and entertainment. We had a good time and went there for my birthday. It was not crowded at all. Not too loud and smoky. The filet and shrimp was good.

I only been to one other teppanyaki place located in Southcenter.. and the verdict is that this place wins hands down! I got the salmon and fried rice and it was delicious. I also tried the steak which was delicious as well. They give you a lot of food and the chef was entertaining. They also give you shrimp and noodles with your food which is great! Before everything comes out, you also get salad and soup. It seems like a family owned restaurant and they try their best to accommodate you. I would return most definitely. I also enjoy the Asian decor of the restaurant, I just wish there were windows. ha.

I love hibachi, and Mikado is my favourite. If you're stuck up about how a place "looks like", you're doing it wrong. This place may be located in a neighbourhood that reminds me of something from Rumble in the Bronx. However, walk in, and you will be in Japan itself (or whatever I think Japan looks like based on Tom Cruise movies.) The "feel" or "ambience" is visually stunning. The food? Fantastic. Not only do you know you're not supporting a chain, but rather going to a family-owned mom-and-pops restaurant, but the chef's are WAY more entertaining, full of joy and humor as they use the freshest of ingredients and cook them just the way you want. The service is brilliant, and everyone is always smiling. This is my go-to place for third or fourth dates.

I've caught this place in my glance so many times while passing by on Rainier and decided to pop in for lunch recently... so glad I did. Upon entering, there were no customers and after a few moments, a lady came out to greet me. Her name's Kim and she's a pleasant and charming Vietnamese lady with a beautiful smile and warm personality. She told me lunch was added about 1 year ago and it's always slow; busy nights are usually Fri-weekends... what a shame! My first impression of this place won my heart over. The Japanese design throughout with subtle modern touches here and there is really great and inviting. My salmon teriyaki was good, as was my salmon nigiri which looked awesome and freshly presented on a glass fan plate by a charming and quiet old man; kind of like the NPC's in older Final Fantasy games (only game nerds might get that reference). Worth the lunch trip from downtown Seattle all you downtown workers you. =P ;) Would like to try the teppanyaki some day.

I very much enjoy hibachi and have been to the Mikado several times at this point. The food is delicious and what you pay is always worth the portion size--I leave feeling stuffed! It's near where I live and I appreciate that it is often quiet, although some people might find it awkward or as a reason to stay away. The waitstaff appropriately attentive for a date-night type of place (they'll leave you alone to talk or canoodle), until the chef comes. We've had the same chef the past three times and he is outgoing, funny, and does an entertaining table show. The only ding is for the music and the loudness of the vents above the tables, which takes away from the otherwise nice atmosphere. Highly recommended for hibachi dinner.

I love Japanese steakhouses and so when I saw a Bloomspot deal for Mikado, I immediately bought it. I came here last night. I made a reservation for 7pm and it was completely empty! A few other groups came in after us but I was still surprised. I ordered the shrimp and scallop tappenyaki and my friend had the steak and tuna tappenyaki. The soup is a chicken broth and you have to pay an extra $1.50 for miso. Super annoying considering I don't eat chicken. I didn't want to pay to switch it though because I already paid an extra $2.50 for fried rice. The meal comes with a good amount of stuff like soup, salad, the proteins, grilled vegetables, rice and noodles. The extra was the noodles. I was originally planning on getting one of the deluxe meals when I looked at the menu online but then it didn't include the green tea or any dessert on the menu and the prices were higher in the restaurant so I felt less motivated to spend that extra money. The food was yummy. They have one less sauce than our usual spot at Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse in Woodinville. They had noodles which was unusual but they weren't too great. They tasted like spaghetti with soy sauce. I liked the tuna because I'd never had tuna at a Japanese steakhouse before. We also had a nigiri platter appetizer which was alright. I'll always love sushi but it wasn't particularly fresh. The show was lacking. It wasn't very theatrical. If you wanted to come for a show for the kids, this isn't really the spot. With that said, he was nice and the best service of the evening which brings me to my next note: The service here is terrible!! First, they are very weird about how sushi eating people have to sit in the sushi room. I understand the tappenyaki people should sit with the grills, but my friend was kind of confused because I don't think he thought beforehand what he would eat. Also, when I asked him about the soup and if there was any sort of substitution they could make since I couldn't have chicken, he kind of stared at me blankly. It's ok that you can't substitute but I think the theme of the night was that our waiter didn't really get it. He looked right at me once while I had my hand raised and left the room. Then he walked right by with my hand raised. Finally, the tappenyaki chef had to call him over so I could check on our appetizer that he had forgotten about and we ended up eating at the same time as our main course. This is minor compared to the other things, but he never checked if we needed more soda/tea either. I would have to say that I knocked off a star because of the service. I would come here again since Benihana is expensive and Tokyo is far all the way in Woodinville. I am just a sucker for Japanese steakhouses but I just will know not to expect excellent service.

I am a huge fan of this place!!! I love Teppan and just the overall experience of having it cook right in front of you and enjoying it fresh. Mikado also makes sushi and bento boxes but I find it rather average. I normally come here for the Teppan with the exception of spicy tuna roll and pot stickers. The Teppanyaki Chef, I believe his name is Chef Luu is pretty good with his knife and funny as hell. He throws the shrimp on your plate not your mouth. I usually get the filet mignon and it always comes out butter...very tender and tasty. They also offer a couple of sauces on the side if you need them...the white one is pretty good. It can get alittle pricey and the wait can be alittle long on any given night because not enough cooks, so make a reservation and ask for Chef Luu because he cooks the food the best. They also have a parking lot on the side or you can park on the street.

Mikado is Seattle's only real Teppanyaki restaurant. The atmosphere is beautiful and comfortable. The food is always fresh and delicious. Everyone is so friendly and we always feel welcome. A large variety of healthy food is cooked on the grill by talented chefs, who also put on a show for you. The tables can hold large groups of people. I usually come in with just one other person. You will have a great time either way. We found Mikado a few years ago, when our favorite Teppanyaki restaurant, The Nara Grill, closed in downtown Seattle. The only other Teppanyaki in town is Benihana, which isn't horrible. But I always feel like it's the fast food chain of Teppanyaki. Mikado is a one of a kind, family owned restaurant. I highly recommend it.

A great place for teppanyaki! I've been going here for years and they just changed owners little more than a year ago. The service is still great and friendly, but they just recently added a Vietnamese menu and it has some GREAT lunch specials. I've been going here for lunch the past few weeks and the Vietnamese addition has been really a nice touch. But the Teppanyaki is really delicious and the chefs are great cooks and entertainers!

Discovered this place when I moved to Seattle. Wanted sushi and they were close by. The sushi was great but the people there were fantastic! Each time I go back I'm greeted like an old friend. I've had the sushi and the Teppanyaki, they are both great! They are adding pho to the menu and I will be there to try it out. Worth checking out.

Ok this place rocks for teppan! Don't come here for the sushi. We are somewhat regulars and seen to get the combos on the end of page one! The place is looking a little jaded but the two that run the place are so friendly and do a great job! The fried rice is excellent and the meat and fish are outstanding! The place is dated looking - very dated but the ambiance is still there and its still fun - I have to say the "old master" is the best in there so request him if you go! Again if sushi is your driver this is not the place... Price is also very right for the dinner entertainment.

I live very close to this restaurant and have been there many times. While I am not a big fan of their sushi and bento boxes, the teppanyaki is the best I've had. The dipping sauces are so good you could drink them and the salad dressings will make salad haters reconsider. The seafood is fresh and grilled to perfection. There are a couple of drawbacks though: - the menu is pricey (plan to spend at least $60 if you are getting dinner and a drink) - the wait can be very long - the quality of the food depends on who's cooking And, one more thing: you get free ice cream on your birthday!

Okay so it's not Benihana, but the food is delicious! And the prices can't be beat. The atmosphere is more relaxed and casual than Benihana, but you get so much food for such a good price. We recently had dinner and ordered shrimp/lobster combo and filet/chicken combo and had a bill under $45! That would not happen at Benihana. Plus you get more food here with all the veggies and the yakisoba treat at the end.

We live in the Beacon Hill area and have been to this place many times, for both sushi and teppanyaki. I think the value here is hard to beat in the Seattle metro area, especially the lunch hour sushi prices ($2-3 for 4 piece maki rolls). The Tsunami and spider rolls are quite tasty. The chef does a very nice presentation and it's all very fresh, and it's a family run place with great hospitality and the hostess and chef remember you as a return customer. The teppanyaki is also a great value, cheaper and less commercial than a Benihana's...make sure to get the fried rice with your entree! Nice drink menu with sake and Japanese beer selections. For non-alcoholic try the green tea smoothie...yum! The decor is traditional and not overdone, you can easily find accomodation for big groups, and you can always get a table even at peak dinner rush. If anybody can tell me where to find better sushi than this for comparable prices, I'd be surprised. Check it out!

The staff is friendly, and the service is good. That is why I am giving it 2 stars. The food, unfortunately, was not good. I had the steak, the fish, the lobster, along with some of the sides. None of it tasted good, and in particular I found the seafood to be quite bad. My friends who had sushi thought it was stale, "bad" sushi, so I don't think I made a mistake in not ordering that. I would not come here again. The food was stale, tasted "weird" if anything, but not good.

We were a bit nervous when we saw the outside of the building- it just looked a bit skeevy. The inside is actually very clean and well decorated. The staff were very friendly and tolerated our rather loud and boisterous group. The chef was fun, and the food was not only tasty, but just the right amount to make you feel full and sated without making you feel like you were being force fed. None of us tried the sushi, but those of us who are teppanyaki fans agreed that the meal was at least as good as Benihana if not better, and the prices were very reasonable. My husband and I plan on returning here regularly now that we have found it.

Do not eat here! I went here tonight for a birthday party and four of the nine of us got food poisoning within an hour. Not a clean restaurant. Slow and poor service. Pretty sure I'm calling the health department and urge you to not eat here.

The food here is awesome. The staff is very sweet & the place is kid-friendly. Our family has been here several times for dinner only. My husband and I both love the filet mignon, chicken & shrimp. We both highly recommend it!

I went to Mikado to have the teppanyaki, which is clearly the largest portion of the restaurant. There is also a smaller sushi area, and a more enclosed tatami mat eating area. I had their lobster, shrimp, sirloin combination, which came with soup, and I switched the fried rice for white rice. The lobster tail was one of the most tender pieces of lobster I've ever had. It was exactly what I was looking for. It's a charming, down home, restaurant with some neat aquariums.

I like the atmosphere here, classic japanese restaurant style. Check out the rooms where you take off your shoes and sit at a low table. However, your feet will be in a cold pit, so wear cozy socks. Unfortunately, that's where the good part ends. We had a party of 6, one person was 8 months pregnant and another had a 4 month old child. Point being, the sand timer of patience and comfort is flipped as soon as we are seated. It was about an hour before our food arrived at the table. There were less than 10 other people in the whole restaurant, yet the service was still frustratingly slow. Then the food arrives and it's just so-so. The menu makes is look like the meat will be really good, but it's just average. Plus there's the strange fact that it's all cut into little cubes so you can eat it with chop sticks.

Normally I'm obsessive about checking the reviews on any restaurant I haven't visited. However, this was the place chosen for a friend's birthday party so I hadn't checked yelp in advance. I'd never experienced teppanyaki ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Te… ) which among other things involved the chef's lighting stacks of onions on fire, throwing knives up in the air and catching them, etc. Our group of around 30 people included a child, and the child was overjoyed by this performance. The chef got the kid involved by having him bang a gong during the birthday song and it was clear that he loved it. I'm always enthused about food which is lit on fire beforehand, and my opinion of the food overall was much more positive than the other reviewers. However, our table had grilled veggies/fish and miso soup... none of us ordered sushi as it didn't seem like the specialty of the restaurant. I generally prefer ordering whatever the main "goal" of the restaurant is... since I don't eat meat, I don't go to steakhouses to sample the salad or that sort of thing. So perhaps my opinion is better than the other reviewers due to that. I also had an entertainment book coupon for buy one entree get one free. The entree prices ranged from $13-25, and it's possible that my opinion would've been less positive at the regular retail price. But for a meal which only cost me a few bucks, I thought it was good. My favorite item was the deep fried red bean ice cream with caramel sauce. Mmm. The other reviewers commented that the place was nearly empty and that was also the case this Saturday night. However, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing since it's often hard to find a restaurant that can seat 30+ people on a Saturday during prime dinner hour.

Came here with the homies on a Sunday night. The place was pretty much empty, my group, a family and just few others were there. My group sat at the teppanyaki table and took a looooong time for the chef to get started. I wasn't sure if they made us wait for another group to arrive or wha? I went all out because I had a entertainment book coupon. I got the filet mignon, salmon and lobster deal that comes with shrimp, fried rice, vegetables and noodles. The chef dices up everything from the meat to the lobster. It was pretty filling but for the price of $32 seemed kinda high to me.

Yuck. Hated this place. All-you-can-eat sushi (which, if you've read in the newspaper, is not truly all-you-can-eat) was pretty unpleasant. Not fresh & limited variety. Came back with an Entertainment card deal for the teppanyaki and wasn't impressed with the food the 2nd time either. They're really expensive for the lack of ambiance and mediocre food.

Staff is friendly. Prices are average for the food. The Sake was yummy. It was fun. Food for 4 with drinks and deserts ran a bit over a c-note. Would go again with no kids.

I would not go for their sushi, but I've enjoyed their teppanyaki twice. Mellow atmosphere, never crowded. The chef had a fun personality.

So I went here tonight with a group of friends - first of all, this place is best to go to with a group - while the food is delicious, you probably will feel weird sitting there by yourself watching them cook in front of you. It was a delightful experience - you get a show as they cook your dinner. The chef said it was his first night - I can't tell if he's serious or not - he's pretty good if it's really his first night! At the end he even twirled and threw some flaming baton things - amazing! I ordered the calamari steak and it was perfectly cooked - not tough or rubbery but not underdone either. For $17 it came with soup, salad, rice (I upgraded to fried rice but if you don't want to pay extra you'll get steamed rice), noodles and grilled veggies. Plus the portion of calamari was VERY generous. I left the restaurant full and happy. I know it says it's a sushi place and on their menu online they still list sushi but when I got there, there was a sign on the door that said as off Sept 2012, they are NO LONGER serving sushi. It's also in a bad looking part of town, which is a bit unnerving especially at night. For these reasons, I decided to remove a star, but if I find I have a great experience after returning a few times (which I shall), I will likely bump it up to five. I highly recommend this place!

I have been to Mikado for lunch and dinner several times when i visited Seattle, WA. They are a better version of Bennihana's, not so much commercialized because it's a family owned operation. My favorite is to have the sashimi and spicy tuna rolls for lunch. For dinner I usually get the gyoza and tempura appetizer. Also the new york steaks, scallops, and lobster tails are tasty. For dessert, I really enjoyed the fried ice cream. The staff are nice and friendly. I did notice that this place is very kid-friendly. I have been to many sushi places before and this place makes it on my top list. It's definitely not a modern/fancy sushi place...more traditional, cozy, and definitely spacious for large parties.

To be honest, Mikado is a little bit ghetto -- but I find it charming! It's a great place to take your date, especially if you two have a sense of humor. Mikado's teppanyaki chefs are skilled, but a little less so than their peers at other teppanyaki joints -- which still makes for an entertaining show! For example, once the chef flipped a shrimp tail in my soda (which they replaced promptly,) and I've been three times and they always drop something. Anyway, the food is tasty and the price is right -- especially if you don't go for the $30 specials. The $17 fillet mignon dinner was just the right amount of food and EXTREMELY tender and delicious, you pay a bit extra for the novelty of teppanyaki. The atmosphere is nice, despite the fact that it's located under a bait shop and labor ready. The staff has always been friendly and accommodating, especially when we have my extremely hard-of-hearing and eccentric grandpa in tow.

went in on a sunday. it was a ghost town, which makes sense because i don't think you're supposed to eat sushi between sunday and wednesday. anyway, we were the only clients and we were nervous because our table was dirty and our waitress dissappeared (although she was very sweet when we did see her). the sake was not warm, it was burning hot. the sushi rolls were the smallest i've ever had and fell apart but they were tasty. the wasabi was weird. it wasn't a bad experience per se, but i won't be back.

This is by far my favorite teppenyaki place in the area, prices are much more reasonable than some of the other seattle locations. They have a lot of variety on their menu, including a vegetarian option and they can be very accomodating. Plus they make everything right in front of you so you can be sure to tell them if you want to change your meal in anyway. It makes for a fun night out with a group, but beware you may have to wait a long time if you don't plan accordingly and often unless you have a huge party will have people you don't know dining with you. Location is not ideal, but parking can usually be found easily. Coupons can often be located as well which makes it even cheaper. Fun place to take someone who has never had teppenyaki.

Mikado is a solid tapenyaki restaurant. They are a very small family operation, so I recommend always calling ahead for dinner. I've tried chicken and filet mignon on their dinner menu, and they're both pretty good. The steamed rice they serve is cooked to perfection, and the sauces they make in-house (salad dressing and 2 dipping sauces) are fantastic. I've never tried their sushi (mainly because I don't particularly prefer sushi), but it looks like it's fresh. I've never eaten lunch there either, bit I hear it can get busy during lunch hours. If you decide to drop in one evening and they can accommodate you, don't let the emptiness of the place weird you out. It's a bad sign anywhere else, but not at Mikado. The staff is super friendly and works hard to ensure you have a pleasurable experience. Mikado is a great place to go if you're looking for a tasty tapenyaki place that won't break the bank.

This place was so friendly and SOOOOOO delicious! I was in there with a friend just as they opened for dinner and we had the place to ourselves. I thought maybe they would be too busy prepping to give us much service but the food and staff were outstanding!

I came here for my friend's birthday with a large group of people. Usually when you are with a large group, there will be dissenting opinions on the taste of the food. It was unaminously agreed upon that the food was horrible. We were the only group in the restaurant (Friday Night!) and they still managed to provide us with a snail paced service. The people who had tepanyaki complained that the food was too salty and the portion was skimpy. You think that the fact that we were the only one in the restaurant, they would give us extra portions to encourage us to come back. Oh well, it's a blessing they didn't because the food was disgusting anyways. My wife and I had sushi. Disgusting! Definitely was not fresh as it had a fishiness flavor to it. *barf* Stay away! I would give it a 0 star if I could.

Absolutely the best Japanese tepanyaki ever. Very reasonably-priced and delicious. I like Benihana, but think Mikado is better.

Face it - good Teppanyaki joints don't really exist in Seattle. But with slim pickins - Mikado is an A-OK option. Note: Think of Mikado's as a hole-in-the-wall Benihana's. 1/2 the price but just as good. Order any of the combinations - (tried the chicken/shrimp while hubs and friends did mixes of NY sirloin/chicken/scallops/shrimp) we chose to upgrade our rice to the Mikado special and it was good. This is a small family run restaurant so don't expect tons of wait staff at your beck and call. There is a sushi restaurant with a tatami room that can accomodate large parties. I dined here several years ago and not much has change - including the old-school 70s decor. Bottom line - you can't really go wrong with Teppan cooking - so if your craving a dining experience that leaves you smelling like grease afterwards -- Mikado might just fit the bill. Order a couple large bottles of Sapporo and enjoy the head chef do his magic! PS - if you have room - have Grandma get you some fried ice cream (Oh So Good!)

I went to Mikado with about 10 friends for my Boo's birthday party. We had a reservation, but still had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. The atmosphere is kinda ghetto for the prices on the menu, but it wasn't dirty or anything. Just kinda lacking intimacy. I ordered the Filet Mingon and Lobster and wasn't incredibly impressed. I got an excellent cut of meat, and it was cooked perfectly, but the lobster was a little salty. Everything I tried from everybody else's orders was just eh. The portions were very small and not so impressive... but goddamn it, we didn't come to a teppanyaki joint to eat... we came to drink! Sake bombs are completely encouraged here, and if you have enough of them, you won't give a hoot that you just spent an arm and a leg on mediocre food. I'd recommend having an event at Mikado, but make sure you have your drinkin' pants on!

Just dined there on Saturday night. There was no one else there - the place was dead. There was a note that it will be under new management on 3/1/10. I had visited a couple of years prior and remember seeing the owner and the cook's pictures and reviews at the entrance, but that was no longer hanging there - maybe the new management has already started? In any case, the food and service were fine and the chef catered to two kids we had in our group. If you have an Entertainment Book, they offer a $13 coupon for this place.

I am a HUGE fan of sushi....absolutely love it! Can never get enough of that delicious tasting fresh fish and rolls. Unfortunatley my friend and I randomly stopped in this place at about 9 pm on a Saturday night while they were serving dinner and we didn't get to try their sushi. When first walking in you see a chef cooking away at an open grill station at the center of a square circle. My first thoughts...wow just like benihana! However we weren't here for teppanyaki or sushi at the moment because we saw the sign outside also offered Vietnamese food... which to me is incredible that a kitchen can prep for Japanese and Vietnamese food (my two most favorite Asian cuisines) haha.....We ordered the specialty rice which consisted of grilled pork chops, egg, egg cake and rice. Service was really friendly and attentative...Prices were very reasonable especially for the amount of food and freshness of everything that came out. Interior design was really clean and well decorated. Basically this place is one of those of pleasant surprises! And considering how much I eat out (literally every single day...) I know a good restaurant experience from a bad... Will definately be back for the sushi!!! '

If you want entertainment and delicious food this is the place to go. This is by far my favorite Japanese restaurant in Seattle. The food is flavorful, the atmosphere is fun and entertaining, and the cost is minimal. The chef's cook right in front of you on stainless steel grills and entertains by putting onion layers on top of each other to make a fiery volcano....make sure to bring your camera! My husband ordered the Ahi, which was to die for he said, and I, being somewhat more plain ordered the chicken, which was full of flavor!! This is my new spot for celebrating birthdays and night out on the towns. Enjoy!

I'm not sure just what in the hell people were talking about if/when they gave anything but the highest marks to the sushi at this place: it is, quite literally, the best fish found anywhere in the world. PERIOD. I have been going to this place for roughly a decade, and I've not even once found their fare to be anything except perfect. I have never ordered anything there except their sushi, and I can't imagine why you'd venture out. The cuts are plump, fresh, and delicious, and the old man who cuts the fish, if you are lucky enough to go on a day when the savvy vet is on call, is like something out of the 17th century. You get the feeling that this guy has been a chef almost as long, at at the very least, his training goes back to such a date for it finds perfection inside the soul. If you are looking for the best kept culinary secret in Seattle, look no further. I would suggest the yellow tail, fresh-water eel (though that's good almost anywhere), tuna, and of course, the salmon. Do not be afraid: go, and you will find happiness.

I feel bad about this one but I really can NOT recommend the Mikado in the International district just off Rainier. I've been wanting to go for years, but the location is a little odd and I've never really heard anything good. I went last night and the first clue should have been that the place was literally empty at 7:00 PM. There was a lot of confusion about where we could sit. If we just wanted Sushi we had to sit in the Sushi room which was kind of dumpy and depressing. The main room was for the Tepanyaki cook at your table style food. We ended up in the Sushi area. The regular menu was almost exclusively versions of Steak and something like fish etc. But since we weren't in the Tepanyaki room we couldn't order most of that anyway. We order several sushi rolls, a side of teriyaki and a side of tempura. The tempura was very good. The batter was not greasy and the veggies were crisp. But downhill from there, everything else was pretty awful. The fish on the Rainbow Roll had obviously just been defrosted and was flavorless, mushy and damp. The teriyaki was okay, but it was kebab styles and there were only about 4 small pieces of beef. The Spider Roll tasted like cardboard. And I actually gagged on the flavor of the salmon skin hand roll because of some bad lettuce they'd put in. The owners are very nice but the place is incredibly expensive and not good at all.

I just had the most awful meal experience at this restaurant. First of all is a monday and the place is mostly empty; we waited to be seated like 5 minutes and after not even being aknowledge we decide to go and sit ourselves. We waited for someone to take our order for like 10 minutes and finally my friend had to go and look for someone that could take our order. We ordered some shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, salmon skin and a washington roll. The tempura comes after 15 minutes and it is soggy!!!?? pretty gross. Then an old guy comes and starts making the sushi rolls which takes him other 15-20 minutes. The first one to come out was the washington roll which the description said it has cream cheese and after a few bites we noticed that there was no cream cheese at all. 2nd roll was spicy tuna, which i ve had it many times in other sushi restaurants and i have to say it was worst than at the conveyor belt cheap sushi. The seaweed was so chewy and hard and the tuna flavor just plain bad. The last roll was the salmon skin and i just could not even finish the roll, the flavor was so bad that i had to eat a lot of ginger afterwards to remove the flavor from my mouth. And to make things worse we had to listen to Taylor Swift during our entire meal!! can they at least play some japanese tunes? If this place had minus stars i will give it minus- 2.

I'm home sitting on the couch and my gay boyfriend #1 (GBF#1) comes home asks how I am my response was HUNNNGRY! OK OK he response lets go eat, or it was something like that because I was HUNNNGRY and only thinking about eating. I grab my Entertainment Book and check to see where we can eat for a discount. Than I see it Mikado, the infamous all you can eat sushi bar that isn't all you can eat for everyone. I suggest it, GBF#1 says sure. I drive because that's what I do and he's asks are you taking me to a dumpster place somewhere like last time referring to Tamarind Tree, I tell him yes. We pull up instead of parking in the lot I chose right outside the front door, makes for an easier escape if needed. We walk in and it's dead, ok not really there are two parties at the teppanyaki grills but other than that no one else. We are seated with these parties and give menus. I was going to go cheap and just get the shrimp teppanyaki but GBF#1 sees the Mikado Specialties and talks about lobster, so I look, oh lobster, shrimp and scallops three of my favorite things, I say screw it and order that plus I just received a bonus from work so it was all good. I soon discover GBF#1 has never been to a teppanyaki place before, which I'm shocked by for some reason but that has nothing to do with anything really. While we are waiting the father of the party of 7 next to me starts talking, blah, blah, blah, we're from Fall City, came all the way here to celebrate three birthdays, blah, blah, blah. Grandma starts talking about the goats being upset because they wanted bananas and I'm like WTF?!? Bananas and goats and GBF#1 and I start laughing we can't help it. They start bringing out the food, tori soup first and it's good, flavorful and light and not to hot. Next is our salad with a ginger dressing, dressing was wonderful not to potent like some places can be. The chef comes out and starts cooking our shrimp appetizer, the shrimp are delish especially in the 'good for veggies and seafood' sauce, love that stuff. The chef is friendly and talks to everyone while performing for the kids. Oh look a volcano wow neato. He does the veggies, mushrooms, onions, zucchini and broccoli all were cooked perfectly, the broccoli wasn't mushy, the zucchini was still firm and the mushrooms and onions were just right. He's cooking away making the fried rice again good stuff. Next he starts on the protein and as he does a cute old Japanese couple are seated at the table next to my GBF#1, the only other Asian people in the joint at this time. They are able to order and their soup and salad start coming out, the gentleman asks in what I assume is Japanese for soy sauce and the chef had the dear in the headlights look, having no clue what he wanted, for some reason this cracked me up again. Goats and bananas and a Teppanyaki chef not understanding Japanese so funny. Anyways my lobster is done first and I try it, yummy! Perfect it's not tough at all, the shrimp are the same way, excellent, the scallops on the other hand left a little to be desired, they were tough and lacking in flavor I was not a fan of them. While we are eating out of no where this little boy appears, and sits right next to the cute old Japanese couple, removes the chopsticks from their package and looks like he's ready to eat. No one is paying attention to him but me and my GBF#1, where did he come from, what does he think he's going to eat? I'm so full of questions but have a plate full of food in front of me I decide to just eat. Dinner's over the party of 7 gets their dessert order taken and they bring out three ice creams with candles and cocktail umbrellas in them, the mysterious little boy reappears and decides to help celebrate and blows out the candle on one of the ice creams. I start laughing again. Next thing you know the little mysterious boy removes the candle, and the umbrella and next the cherry sitting on top, puts the cherry in his mouth to lick it clean than sticks it right back on top of the ice cream. I lose it and so does GBF#1, who is the kid and why is no one stopping him?!?! The mysterious little boy than comes over by us, the Fall City father says something to him and all he does is puts in tiny little fingers in an OK sign and says OK and leaves, never to be seen again. Mikado it's not just a food show there's a floor show as well, plus they have 6 teppanyaki grills, a sushi bar, and private tatami rooms that you can choose your own personal Mikado experience. Go for the teppanyaki stay for the show.

Maybe what cursed us is that we were in the mood for sushi and did not want to pay an arm and a leg for teppanyaki. The young man who greeted us was nice enough and sat us down immediately with menus and water. We happened to be the only ones in the restaurant. Then the woman owner came up and asked what we wanted. We told her we were interested in sushi and maybe some appetizers and it was like she was insulted. She kept asking us if that's all we wanted and seemed angry at us. Then she ignored us while we tried to figure out what to get. After a few minutes of her silent rage, we got up and left, there was just too much bad energy in that place. We even left a tip for the guy who gave us water. No way will I ever go back there.

Very friendly staff, quiet atmosphere and delicious Teppanyaki entrees. They serve a variety of sushi as well a nice selection of sake. The only catch, higher prices! That may be the only reason why I visit every couple of months!

I have tried their steak and shrimp hibachi and I am not impressed at all. For instance you really only get one piece of shrimp with your hibachi meal, which is way overpriced. The food is mediocre and their sushi buffet is nasty. Who knows when they made the sushi and the buffet selections are horrible. Not to mention is costs about $13 per person. They have coupons in the entertainment book but they often refuse them when you try to use them.

Do not go to Mikado for the sushi, go for the teppanyaki! A really good, unpretentious alternative to Benihana. A good place for a birthday party. The waitstaff was really friendly and our chef was fun. The kitchen manager even came out and talked with us. Good drinks, and variety of asian beers and sake. The location was a little off the beaten path, but this made parking easy. I would definately go back. mikadoteppanyaki.com/foo…
