Kell's is full of atmosphere, the real deal pub atmosphere. We stopped in on my birthday in late October, after we had taken the Market Ghost Tour in Pike Place Market. Turns out Kell's is in the back part of what was Seattle's first mortuary, and yes, Kell's reportedly has its share of spirits, and not just the alcoholic kind. Didn't see any ghosts in the bar, though we had some excellent Irish food and drink. We had some ice cold beer (got a Carlsberg draft, not a big Guinness fan), along with appetizers. The bangers and fries were great. The service was attentive and friendly. As it was around 10 p.m., a live band was playing as well. Loved this place and can't wait to return soon.

Great location just up the street from Seattle's Public Market they offer a full menu ole' style ales and scotch.

Lots of Tall... Lots of Handsome.... Lots of Soccer Players.... Which makes me question why the heck I am not here more often.... Ohhh and lots of beer. Which quenches the thirst of the three above mentioned attributes of Kells.

I came to Kell's with high expectations, after months of hearing my co-worker rave about this place. I left unimpressed. Sure, it's in a great location but for a Saturday night it was kinda ho-hum. Crowd was old(er) & quiet (for a bar), the band mediocre, and the prices were a bit ridiculous for food. Probably somewhere I'd go for a quick beer or Irish Car Bomb after work but this isn't a place I'll take friends out for a night of drunken debauchery.

I have only been at night. It's too crowded. I never feel like it is worth the cover charge. The live music can be decent. The DJ music is generally so loud that it is difficult to talk even when yelling. The DJ has conspicuously bad taste and a penchant for stopping songs in the middle of a verse or chorus in order to repeat another mediocre song that he or she just played.

Located a street away from Pike Place and along the charming Post Alley, some friends and I decided to give this a try after not being too impressed with Watson's. The prices were a little higher but it looked promising and we were not wrong! The decor felt very warm and the atmosphere was lively but not so loud it drowned out conversation on a Friday night. The waitress was extremely friendly and offered us all good suggestions on what food to eat. Their halibut special stuck out to me and it was very delicious. It was nicely cooked so that the moisture and taste was still there and the veggies were soft but still wonderful. The dessert was small but enough for three people to share two. I would recommend this place to other visitors and I will be back again for sure!

I am sort of enjoying my last freedom at work before 18 months long project kickoffs next week. So I decided to head up downtown for dinner with a friend. First of all, maybe Seattle downtown is not a place to be in the evening of work days. The city felt a bit empty. Anyhow move on to Kells. I was happy to see Kells sign because Kells, Portland is one of my favorite places to hangout with friends. I walked in there with certain expectation or hope Seattle location is an identical tween to the one in Portland. What a disappointment! It's an Irish pub, but I didn't really feel any Irish-ness there! And they didn't have reuben sandwich on the menu!!! The food selection was very limited for dinner, and it seemed like this place is only meant for lunch or happy hour. Well, maybe I am not being fair to Kells, Seattle because I expected too much before I even walk in there. But I think anyone from the Rose City would agree with me!

I give this place a 3.5. The atmosphere was nice, the staff was friendly, everything was clean, and the food was good. I had ordered the clams in garlic broth. I expected some big clams with really garlicy broth. Maybe I shouldnt have set my expectations so high. I should have known better since it was a bar and not a seafood establishment. I just assumed since it was in post alley (near pikes place) and right by the water they'd have great seafood! But overall the dish was great. The beers here are cheap. This place offers patio seating and you can get a nice glimpse of the water.

I like a well-poured pint of the black stuff and the bar staff at kells knows what they're about. Things I like about Kells: -great import selection on draught -friendly ownership; Etta always chats a bit with my wife when she's in -diverse crowd -atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere (the Kells in SF is great too!) -outdoor seating with nice views of Elliot Bay Things I'm not too crazy about: -tends to attract the rowdies late night -parking

True Irish Pub. If you can find a seat outside, do it. The inside is dark but comfortable. I did not have any food but from what I could smell, I bet it was good.

There were green alligators *long arm clap* and long-necked geese *one hand up* Some humpty-backed camels *hunchover* and some chimpanzees *fingers to pits*, Some cats and rats *cat eyes and whiskers* and elephants *arm trunk*, But sure as you're born *rock baby* The loveliest of them all was the Unicorn *put beer on forehead* (now take a drink) Head to Kell's in Post Alley for a good ole Irish sing-a-long which is never a bad time. Add alcohol and yep everything is funnier. Just try and be unhappy at Kell's doing the actions to the Unicorn song. You simply can't do it. There's a $5 cover and I suggest you get there early for a table. Even if you aren't a big drinker, arrange a designated driver or take a cab. For some reason the Guinness tastes better at Kell's. Makes me wish I was Irish. *The Unicorn song was written by children's author Shel Silverstein, this song was popularized by the Irish Rovers in the 60's

Stopped in here after visiting the market for a drink or two with my wife and friends. Not a bad place at all and the bar tendor was really nice, he let my wife sample an Irish Whiskey that she had never seen. I have been to better "Irish Pubs" before but Kells is worth a visit or two.

I had a fabulous time at Kells. I was there the day before St. Patrick's Day and the party was already in full swing. Drinks were good and the food was hearty pub fare. Nothing too fancy, nothing too boring. All good with a Guinness. The live music was AWESOME! I would be happy to return if I'm ever in town again.

Great Sausage rolls, they are the real deal and are served with gravey. They are only $3 during happy hour. If I lived in Seattle we would be regular vistors.

Once every three years my friends and I end up in Seattle for a night of drinking and debauchery and once every three years we end up at Kells. I figured that I would be remiss if I did not write at least a little something about it this time. Here goes. Of course, Kells is not an authentic Irish pub but that does not bother me the way it might other people. I am not entirely certain why we always end up at Kells but it definitely is not to feel like we are in Ireland. We are in Seattle and we all know that. I remember the last time we were here we did not stick around for very long. A couple drinks and we were out the door and off to do whatever the hell else we did (I cannot remember and it is not just because it was a long time ago). This time we apparently decided to plant ourselves in this bar and this bar alone. It being a Saturday night and all, the downstairs was absolutely packed. We (and by we I mean all eleven of us) went upstairs where there were only a couple dozen people at around 11 PM. It was a much better environment for our large group though there was not as much happening. Our group membership sort of waxed and waned throughout the night though and as usual I ended up spending much of the night outside with the smokers talking about God knows what. What little time I did spend inside and upstairs was a pleasant enough experience. Our bartender that night, a man named Fawzi who was apparently of Algerian descent, was making drinks at blinding speed and carrying on as much of a conversation as time would permit (hence how I know he is of Algerian descent); the music was not horrific but was still only generic bar music; and the general atmosphere was pretty relaxed. There were single women of all shapes and sizes so the single members of our group had plenty of choices. Also, there did not seem to be any guys my drunken friends wanted to punch which is always a plus. The only thing that seemed odd was that we were kicked out of the upstairs area around 1:30 AM. It must just be harder to get people out of there so they probably try to herd them out as early as possible. The last thing I can say is that the drinks were not too expensive. I bought two rounds and my bill only came to about $70. We had been drinking before we arrived though so we easily could have spent more. Anyway, overall I think a good time was had by all. See you in three years, Kells.

Best Bloody Mary I've had in bar, hands down. Just the right amount of horseradish, tangy tomato juice, and jumbo olives. Price is a little steep because it's more than a little touristy, but I will pay for a good bloody. The food is good-hearty and greasy just the way my tummy likes it.

Stopped into this place for a drink. Love the atmosphere! I went during the week so it was pretty empty but staff was very attentive and nice. Gave great suggestions on drinks. I will definitely be coming back again!

I went here for lunch with a friend who's seven months pregnant, so I'm approaching this from a slightly different angle than many of the reviews posted. That makes it OK to add a 113th review of the place, right? I've been to Seattle twice--seven years apart--and both times my friend Michele took me to Kells. "I love the seafood pasty," she told me. Apparently. I don't remember what I got in 2002, but last weekend, I got the chicken pasty. It was delicious--a well-balanced mix of chicken and mushrooms baked in a crisp flaky pastry and set in a creamy sauce. It came with soup and of course soda bread. It wasn't very much food compared to most meals out, but considering how rich it was, it was probably just the right amount. Btw, don't be scared of ordering a pasty because of the name. I felt ridiculous ordering such a dish, but the waitress told us that she does indeed pronounce it like a certain item used to cover naughty bits. I looked it up later, and you actually should pronounce it so it rhymes with "nasty" (coincidentally), but hey, if the waitress there says it incorrectly day in and day out, you can, too.

In between sets of live music, some goof thinks it's a good idea to crank the PA to 11. Kinda sucks when you're trying to socialize.

Kells is a decent bar. The fish and chips came recommended and the drinks were enjoyable. Depending on the time of day or what night you visit, Kells can be packed. Sometimes, it is difficult to find a place to sit or even stand.

Worst bartenders and service in Seattle. Kells used to be a great place but has turned into a joke.

"Did you eat paint chips as a kid?" -Tommy Boy Well I did at Kell's over the weekend. Yep, floating in my beloved Stoli & Soda with lemon were several chips, flakes swimming around. Luckily they were spotted only after a couple of sips, but that was such a bummer. But even with this instance over the weekend, when I lived in Seattle I had many a debacherous night in Kell's. Always a story when you leave here. Irish singing of songs even if you aren't Irish, lots of carbombs, too many shots of whisky and so many St. Paddy's Days spent here. Even paint chips won't keep me away, Kell's.

Met some friends here today for lunch. Friendly, efficient servers kept my cuppa tea full and let my friends and I linger long after we were done eating. Decent Irish soda bread served pre-meal. My chicken pasty was well nice. Unfortunately, all lunch entrées are served with the soup-of-the-day. Today's soup was Vegetable Beef. I don't eat beef. I asked if there was an alternative. Was told I could either get the chicken pasty on its own as an appetizer or pay an extra $2 to sub a salad for the soup. That is really bad practice. There are lots of vegetarians and other non-beef eaters in Seattle. There are people who, like my husband, eat beef, but are allergic to onions (which I'm guessing were in that soup). There are people who just don't like Vegetable Beef Soup. So all these folks end up eating half a meal or spending more $$$ because they don't want to (or can't) eat the soup choice. Surely at least one alternative could be offered as a substitute (at no extra cost) for this large group of potential customers. I know this will keep me from rushing back any time soon.

I use to rave about this place! until the last time i went there with a group of co-workers. I ordered the Irish Stew and it tasted like anise so much that I asked for it to be taken away. The Owner came to our table and asked in a stern voice and a disgused face who sent back the stew. She told me that she has been serving that authentic stew all day and no complates. she told me I must be sick and she hopes I never get caught in Ireland. So I have never been back.

The live music is a nice change of style. The place is a little crowded at times and loud, but that can be okay on some nights. Usually a different vibe upstairs that is always good to check out as well.

Brought some out of town guests here for a dinner out. I went to the effort of making reservations..but when I showed up, the staff gave me a weird look and told me they would seat us whenever they could. We ended up getting a spot outside and had the pleasure of one of the blandest meals ever. The soup was overly sour. My chicken was covered in generic too-sweet sauce. Yuck. We all made nice faces at each other and discussed how lovely the view was - ie, the teeny tiny sliver of blue that we could see inbetween the alley buildings - because that was the only nice thing about this restaurant.

Decent food and beer but we really come here to watch music. Had a great time watching the Stoutpounders last Sat night. The place was packed and everyone was having fun on a rare hot summer night. Unfortunately, the air conditioner couldn't keep up with our 80 degree weather combined with a packed room. It was hot and muggy but most people didn't seem to care. Our waitress was over worked because of the huge crowed, but she did a great job taking care of us and keeping track of our separate checks.

Had lunch here. You can get a cheap solid Irish lunch here. Authentic, clean, nice place. I didn't know what a "patsie" is either. It's like a small calzone. They're inexpensive and GOOD here. This is also another quality place near the market to get good cheap eats. They build a good Guinness here too. I approve.

*Please allow a 1 star margin of error due to travel narcosis. Freshly arrived, I wandered downtown Seattle 11pmish Thursday finding so signs of nightlife until spying a gaggle of smokers on a waterfront alley. I maneuvered to the bar only to be tapped on the shoulder by some dude who said I had cut ahead. It worked out well, however, as he bought me a Guinness. They serve it much colder than is proper but to hell with tradition, I'm an American and the colder the better. I stopped in again Friday night and it was quite lively with some kick-ass live music.

These are the reasons why I had a great time at the Kells: 1. We snagged table in the live music room 2. which entailed a dude who played Journey and Irish drinking songs. 3. Two of my party were from Boston which meant we knew the words to the Irish drinking songs. 4. Celebrating a special occasion called for several rounds of shots 5. served by a semi-prompt waitress who made us raise our hands if we wanted shots. 6. I was with a group big enough to pretty much ignore the overwhelming presence of drunk dude-bros/tourists 7. but I won't lie, a lot of them were pretty cute 8. but maybe that was because of the shots 9. which also made me think it was appropriate to get up and dance. So, in summary, the above formula made for a highly entertaining evening at the Kells. I don't know if I would go back if I couldn't fulfill at least 6 out of the 9, but I do enjoy a good rendition of "The Wild Rover."

The idea of an Irish pub has so much promise, with all that dark wood and live music and floors stained with decades of spilled Guinness, it entices the imagination... but the actual experience was more "ho-hum," as one reviewer put it. If it is true, as many others have written, that Kell's isn't an authentic Irish pub, maybe that's part of the problem. We went for pre-dinner cocktails and I think I agree with another that Kell's "isn't the place to go for an intimate conversation . . . in a comfortable environment."

Pikes Place tourist bar. I doubt anyone else goes here. If you want to hook up with various out-of-towners on vacation and in heat, this might be a good place to get your action on. A climbing harness is recommended should you chose to indulge and want to find your way out again. Belay on! Not recommended for any other purpose, and likely not even for the one stated.

The good: Their oysters are big, delicious, moderately priced on the regular menu and a steal on the happy hour menu. Cool atmosphere and live music. Historic setting and Post Alley location makes it a good place to take out-of-towners. The bad: Staff has been rude on more than one occasion. Most of the food on the menu is neither appetizing (Irish nachos? Really?) or just plain unimpressive, even for bar food. But really, they get an extra star for the oysters.

    (4)
  • Ben E.

Service was crazy slow. The place was not busy and a lot of people were "working". Shepards pie was ok, but nothing to get excited about. They simply rely on their good location.

    (2)
  • John D.

Kells is not cheap. Kells is cyclic. But even on the low end of their apparently random cycle they have some yummy yummy food and for drinkers, good beer. They *really* need to get an NA Amber or darker in there, though. That said, the sausage rolls were (as always) delicious, the cheese plate good (though a bit pedestrian), and the steak and kidney pie (while not as good as I recalled) quite good. The pie of ever-fallible memory was a bit more savory... Overall, this is a good (but pricey) place that's bombarded with tourists from the Pike Place Market. As a local, it's a "couple of times a year" thing, as I can get much of what I love at Paddy Coyne's for about 1/3rd the price....

  • M S.

This is a chain, right? There's a Kell's in San Francisco too, only the Seattle location is definitely more of a tourist trap. Being that I was one of those tourists, I suppose my review matters in that realm. That said, it was pretty dead when we were there. We took up a booth at the bar, and may have been the only people in the entire place. Though, we may have been there a little early. The decor is your standard Irish pub, with the woodwork and the whiskey feel...no Magner's though! I'd like to know what happens at night, is there a scene at this place?

Ok, so its a bit of a meat market... but at least it has a (faint) Irish brogue, and as meat markets go its not as bad as its Belltown neighbors. To its credit, The Kells doesn't pretend to be something its not, it knows its role in the downtown scene - a good place to go to when you are looking to get rowdy in the company of other moderately successful individuals between the ages of 21 and 34 and over consume Irish wiskey and Guinness. I would give 4 stars for its honesty, but I detract one star for the lousy music. Everytime I go it strikes me that the band isn't that talented and has a lousy attitude (won't play lots of songs). I haven't headbutted anyone on stage yet, but I think its only a matter of time. Perhaps this is reason enough for you to go... you might get to see a headbutt in person, and it would be a good story for the kids.

I'm pretty much in love with this place. Besides the fact that it is 2 blocks away from my Apartment and I get to stumble home (WOO!) it is a solid bar, with great waitstaff, food is solid, and it just has a great ambiance. I was completely sold with the live music and guitar playing in the corner. People were getting really into and dancing. And then, when these awesome acoustic Irish guitar players busted out with Sweet Caroline, I fell in love. I get great vibes from coming here. Oh and PS. the one saturday I went there was a private party upstairs that they opened up to the public and everyone was salsa dancing like mad?! Not sure if this is a regular occurrence at Kells but it was pretty fucking amazing and it made my night. It was around 2:30 when they turned on the lights and everyone was sad becasue no one wanted to go home! It was great.

When we boarded our Alaska Airlines flight to return to Los Angeles, my husband was wearing the Kells t-shirt he'd purchased during our visit. The flight attendant who welcomed us on board saw the shirt and said, "I love that place!" Mid-cabin, a second flight attendant exclaimed, "Great shirt! I was just there last night." So, Kells is very popular with the flight crew of Alaska Airlines! And with me! I don't know exactly what it was. Maybe it was the cheerful, friendly, and obnoxiously pretty waitress/barmaid. Maybe it was the triple pour of Guinness (pour a third, let it settle. Pour two thirds, let it settle. Pour to the brim. This is the elusive triple pour -- most bars pour twice if you're lucky. Many fill it up and serve which is just wrong, wrong, wrong). Maybe it was the authentic Irish feel of the place. Seattle is a great place for an Irish pub since the gray, rainy, cold weather is reminiscent of the motherland herself. John and I were celebrating our first wedding anniversary and pints of Guinness that were Europe cold and not California cold were the perfect accompanyment to our game of Dominos. We are considering moving to Seattle and becoming regulars. Didn't try the food.

This location was not as good as the Kells in Portland, OR. I was a bit disappointed in their service. I was here for dinner and it wasn't very busy in the section I was seated in, but I noticed our server was also running around in other sections. I asked for water and she completely forgot. She was running around bringing people's checks and drinks and then even standing around talking to her co-worker! I was ready to go up and get the pitcher myself. Finally her co-worker motioned to our table that I was looking at her and she came back and apologized for taking so long to bring our water. The food here wasn't as good as the other place. I ordered the shepherds pie and it was very dry and not very flavorful. The odd thing about this restaurant is that it was once a mortuary. So at first I was hesitant to eat in a place that was once used for dead bodies. But I got over it because I really liked the Kells in Portland. Needless to say I won't make it a point to eat at this location again. There are lots of other great places in the Pike Place area with much better service and food.

I just got back from my first trip to Kells. I met up with old friends and a new friend for some pints. 4 stars for good beer, an attentive server, and a great live band (who played the requisite Sweet Caroline..buh buh buh) and some drunk folk who were doing their damnedest to dance an Irish Jig. The music was a bit loud making conversation tricky sometimes, but that kind of comes with the territory. It may have been because it's a holiday weekend, but the place wasn't super packed, which was nice. I didn't have any of the food, but definitely had a great time! If you haven't been to Kells, give it a shot! Also, and this has nothing to do with my review here, but as a friend and I discovered tonight: Irish and Germans both drink in small, dark bars, but the Irish dance and sing. And I think this is a valuable pice of information we are all better off knowing.

Oy vey. I was going to start this review with a snark line "If you're reading this review, you've probably already made this mistake". But I see 88 reviews and an average of 4.5 stars. Really?!!! I guess locals and tourists alike enjoy Kell's, so I'm sure I missed something the day we visited. I was sure it was a tourist trap, and the service was reminiscent of a place that doesn't worry about enticing locals to return. I was wrong? The food was overpriced, my crap and shrimps salad was $13 for lunch. My boyfriend's irish soup was $8. Neither were excellent, both were slow-coming, and once I did get my food the fork was conveniently missing. I don't feel like going into details. It's not worth it- trust me. There are so many better places in PP Market.

I admit it, I l love Kell's. The staff is great, especially the bartenders. Ok ok, I know I'm not suppose to like it because I work in the Market and this is supposedly a place for tourists...but I don't care. Sunday-Thursday this place is awesome. And that is when I go. Tend to stay away on the weekends, especially after 8 or 9. But it's a great place to grab a drink (or several) after work. P.S. The chicken pasty will change your life.

My favorite resturant in all of Seattle ! And Seattle has some great food. I guess its the atmosphere, the food, and the service that continues to bring me back to Kells. Try the Portland and San Francisco location too.

We had great food and great service. Love the cozy atmosphere and the large whiskey selection. Prices were fair for what we got and the food was great. My only gripe is to have more kid-friendly food for those of us coming in earlier in the day (yes I know its a pub).

::special spot-- this will always be the spot where I see my old friend get drunk for the first time:: Needed a watering hole on a friday night, wandered up and down 1st ave and couldnt find a decent lounge-y bar until it hit me. I wandered by this bar on a tour earlier and it looked promising. Kell's (same name as a cool spot in sf, which also helps) a nice irish pub with a restaurant attached to it. Lots of tables, big screen tv at the front of the room with some show of masculinity w/ animal skin covered spherical object with sweaty men (... i think it was basketball that night). lots of people, great for people-watching.... spent about 20 mins spying on this couple next to us on a horrible date-- poor saps :( 4 stars, but extra star for having my favorite beer-- smithwick's :) 5 stars =D

A great Irish Bar. They have all the regular beers you would expect: Kilkenny, Bass, Guiness, Harp, plus, local Seattle favorites. The atmosphere is great with live bands every night. It's large and open and I never wait long for a drink even on really busy nights... which is more often than not.

Great spot if you're looking to have a fairly crazy night out in Seattle with your friends without having to deal with the typical, disgustingly superficial, Belltown crowd. There is always a live band playing either Irish Folk music or covering music in a somewhat Irish Folk fashion... Very cool! Definitely one of my favorite bars. Black and Tans with Harp, and Irish car bombs make Dannyboy a happy boy!

If your liver gets as excited as mine does with a LONG LONG list of scotch and whiskey... This is your place.... Mine started yelling at me as soon as the list was in front of me. You can go from broke ($4) to balla ($30+) pour of whiskey or scotch depending on who's liver you need to impress for the night. I only had a chance to sample one pour on my visit (a mid priced $9 pour) but my liver loved it and so did my taste buds. Didn't take the time for food. The service was so so but again I was just there for a short trip. I will be back soon though

cheap drinks, good atmosphere, The bouncers are like drill sargents at about 140am. "Everyone out drink up!" They just turn up the lights and then all these pissed off bouncers just start raiding the place like we are an infestation. Maybe they should try a more gradual approach. For instance lower the music, inform guests of last call, turn up the lights a bit-that way at 2am all your customers are given an opportunity to wrap things up.

It is about time I wrote this review. Kells is my favorite bar in Seattle. It's got everything you need to start a night. Great people to meet, great staff, an owner that's there every night. It is, however a weekend spot, sure they'll have the live music on the week nights, but if you want the great crowd, save it for Friday or Saturday.

Went here with a couple of mates to have a pint around 1:30am. Nice lady takes our order, brings the drinks, and comes back 2 minutes later and asks to pay. No big deal so far... We paid right away. Next minute later a gang of security staff does a sweep through of the whole place like we are in prison. Everyone out!!! Get out!!! Move it!!! We had to pound our IPA's and cocktails. Still didn't get a chance to finish it. Most places usually have a last call and then give at least 15 minutes to enjoy their drink and not 15 seconds to get the hell out. Not going back..

The one in San Francisco is much nicer. The up side is the outdoor seating, but their Pimm's cups are terrible. Good place to go if you are feeling homesick for San Francisco.

This is my favorite place in Seattle, bar none. If I could manage it I would go here a couple times a week. I love the food and the ambience and everything about the place. The wait staff is always super friendly and helpful. I especially love that there is live music every night. The one and only thing that could make this place better would be a comfy leather armchair reserved just for me.

Best chowder in Pike Place Market. Avoid crazy weekend crowds and stop in for lunch on a weekday. My sons loved the soda bread. Bonus: Mimosas offered on Mondays!

I have heard many great things about this bar and restaurant but maybe it is better as a bar than for dinner. I went to Kell's on a rainy. windy night. I was grouchy, cold and wet and I couldn't find anything on the menu that I had ever heard of. After much deliberating I decided on lamb soup. By this time our waitress had given up on me and we then gave our order to a friendly bar man. The food was interesting and better than I expected. But I'm not sure I would recommend it as a dinner spot. I will try it again no a dry night for a couple drinks with friends.

Kells is an amazing restaurant & pub! Whether you are looking for a full service bar and banquet rental or a fun place to relax with friends--they really accommodate. Service is above and beyond considering the amount of business they have. The space can get really crowded but it's entirely worth staying, it's crowded because it's amazing! The live bands on the weekend bring in a fun crowd. In true Irish fashion, young and old dance drink and pay homage to what makes the Irish truly enjoyable, inhibition.

You know, I've been lucky in coming here - I've always had decent service, it's never been so busy I've had to wait a decade for a spot to sit, and the food's always been pretty good. It's one of my favorite date spots - good music, good atmosphere (all dark and candlelit and quiet nooks), and when I've gone, I have usually shared an appetizer platter or two (cheese platter is amazing) with said date, as well as each of us having a bowl of soup - the chowder is quite good. And, of course, a beer to wash it down. I hear this place is an absolute zoo on St. Patrick's Day, which should go without saying, but I've never attempted this - I have a tradition of eating Mexican food on St. Patrick's Day, and it's really easy to get into the Mexican restaurants on that day!

It matters not to me that people who actually live in Ireland don't listen to Irish music; neither does it bother me that they don't do a fancy Irish jig when they knock back a few. I am one who enjoys such merriment, and will continue to do so. The $5.00 cover is just pennies to hear a live electric Irish band in the heart of Pike Place. Kells is a fine, fine place for a round or two. I too balked when all the un-locals started coming, and when those young fraternity fellows started a' callin as well, all a' tryin to dance that Irish jig like they knew what they was doin. But so what, it's a blast. Last time I was there, a short jolly man asked me to dance. i got a'stepin. I danced circles around him, literally, he held up his hand in the air, and I (the tall one) danced around him like and Irish showgirl. Is there such a thing? Well there was that night.

It's important for everyone to remember that Kells is a restaurant and a pub, those are two separate areas. Most reviewers don't take the time to distinguish what portion of the business they're reviewing. Despite turning 21, I've never bothered with the bar section of Kells. The restaurant half has a really relaxing feel. Everything is wood and warmth. For years I've enjoyed the delicious food, friendly service and good location. My family especially likes to have late breakfasts there when we're shopping at the Market.

If parking in the downtown area wasn't such a pain during weekend evenings I would love to venture here more often. The two sides of this gigantic bar offer two types of entertainment for one night. The bar side and restaurant side both get equally crowded but I never found a problem getting a drink. Servers are fast, bartenders are attentive, and the crowd (even though dense) is aware enough when you need to be let through to use the restrooms.

Backstory: When I neared my 21st birthday my father said he would take me anywhere in Portland - but Kells. Seems that those who run the P-Town Kells had asked for an estimate from my father's company for some electrical work, did the work themselves, then told the permit office the shoddy work was done by my father's company. Kells was off-limits to his Irish progeny. I've broken my father's rule about Kells a few times here in Seattle - mostly when I first moved here 10 years ago. I'm not a rule breaker anymore. I would never pick Kells as a place to grab a bite to eat during the weekday - the food isn't worth the effort of Pikes during rush hour. And it's obnoxious on Friday and Saturday nights. It's a bar you have to make plans to go to days in advance as someone is going to have to go early to hold seats. And usually when you go to Kells you end up staying late because a) you don't want to give up the great seats that you got there so early for, b) the food/drinks come slower mid-evening when the frat-holes and sorostitutes show up c) one of your friends will have requested either 'Alice' or the 'Unicorn Song' and has to wait to hear it.

So being a frequent of Irish pubs....I must admit I enjoyed myself more than I thought I would in a CORPORATE irish pub.... My girl suggested we go see OCKHAMS RAZOR down there and I was like UGH...OK Got down there and it was quite packed already by 9. Lucked out with 2 spots at the first bar. It was quite entertaining seeing there 40-some drunk chicks dancing with each other and tryin to be all cute with the bartender. We ordered our Magners and enjoyed the music and the ambiance. Hell when we ordered our next round he said those were on him....BIG PLUS.... The only reason I kept this from a 5 star is that it is corporate and it feels like it..... Didnt try any of the food so I cant say much ado about that.....

After popping around in the touristy market area, my friend took me up here. We happened upon it quite accidentally, though also intentionally...What I mean to say is that we took this staircase not knowing where it went to & magically we arrived at exactly where we wanted to go. We sat outside admiring the view & the cute little alley its in. As with every other place in Seattle, I ordered the house beer -- which was actually quite tasty. We also ate this fabulous brie dish with fruits & bread. Who would have ever thought that melted brie would taste fabulous on watermelon? Definitely something you've gotta try - it totally hit the spot.

Finding this little pub was one of the highlights of my Seattle trip. This traditional Irish pub looks like the kind of place you'd wander into by mistake. If you do happen to be near the Pikes Place Market and end up walking into a certain dark alley, this is the best place you can duck into for warm and friendly staff, great traditional Irish food, and a healthy selection of Irish brews.

I come here primarily to have drinks with friends but did recently "oooo and ahhhh" over Kell's amazing Cobb salad. On this occasion, we were sitting outside enjoying the beautiful day along with other folks when I overheard the waitress/owner(?) tell two gentleman next to us that they'd have to move because the table they were at was reserved for diners; they just wanted drinks. I was mortified, and I wasn't even personally involved. Not only was I embarrassed for the gentlemen visitors to our fair city (obviously tourists), I was embarrassed for Kell's. "Move it to the back of the bus!" If this had been me, I would have left. There are no signs posted out back designating space as for "diners only." To avoid future embarrassment, I suggest the restaurant post some signs or seat guests according to what they plan to spend. I sat inside last fall to have drinks and watch a football game on Kell's big screen. Because we weren't eating, we had to fetch our own drinks from the bar. This may have made more sense had the place been busy, which it wasn't. It's been my observation that Kell's places a higher value on guests who come to spend serious money on a meal. It should be asking itself whether or not the experience is reason enough to return or recommend. Aug. 23 -- Returned to Kell's for after hours drinks. We set up a table outside and waited for a server to show. We finally went to the bar and learned that, once again, we had to fetch our own drinks. We may have stayed after having learned this had it not been for the group of preppies smoking on the back patio facing the alley. The staff seemed to turn a blind eye to it. It's apparently difficult for a waitress to confront his/her peer group when they're misbehaving. Not sure that the Cobb salad is enough to bring me back.

I'm a little torn here for my review. The apps were really good, and perfect for a fun afternoon. But the drinks were very pricey for nothing special. I'd probably give it a 4-star, but the shock when paying has me a little put-off. Definitely worth stopping, but don't go too overboard.

Kells is a lovely place to stumble into after you've already had one too many Stella's. It's great I say, you walk in grab a bite to eat and wash it down with one more Stella for the road, I mean bus and you're all set. Everyone there is always warm and friendly and welcoming something so un-Seattle-like if you ask me. That's pretty much all I have to add about the wonderfulness know as Kells.

I love the Irish....its simple really, any culture that embraces the simplicity of the potato, getting drunk, fighting, dancing like ninnies and singing songs such as "who the fuck is alice" definitely wins points in my book. My husband loves the Irish so much he goes to Boston every year for St Pattys day. He marches in the parade, drinks till he cant remember to call and sings to the Dropkick Murphys. With that said, we came to this bar with two friends, one of which a local. She said we would dig it. I dug it. I love a good Irish tune and watching what I hope are tourists with bad rhythm flailing themselves around a dance floor like.....like....Im really at odds to find a good metaphor here. I just hope they were tourists and the fine peeps of Seattle are not without that much rhythm. Anyhow, I had fun screaming and singing and so did my hubby, Mr. I Dont Usually Sing in Bars. The small room and large weekend crowd does suck. I do like to sit. The second night we met another couple and shared a table. Not bad. We left a little earlier.....Mr. I Dont Usually Sing in Bars was feeling like Mr. I Dont Usually Go to Porn Stores in Foreign Cities. I like Kells.

My first thought of this place before going in was "Wow! This place is insanely busy for such a HUGE capacity!" However I must say the cover charge for everyone(5 bucks) was kind of uncool given the fact I had to wait forever to get any of my drinks. After getting inside the main floor was extremely packed, also to the point I thought they were over occupied! Then we went upstairs to another bar which was not as congested as the ones below, but there was still a wait just not as bad as it would've been. As far as drink prices go I don't know because my friend paid for them but I must say that the crowd is filled with young people, not very diverse in ethnicity mostly caucasian(95%) which made me feel rather uncomfortable. The worse part of the night is when we finally got a table large enough for my group, some random guy comes and sit down to talk to me! OMFG! Are you fcuking serious?! (What an ackward moment even though my girlfriend was sitting right next to me) We exchanged a few words and I casual ignored the guy then his friend walks on by and whisper something in his ear then the friend comes and sits right next to me! UHH...........Ok? I don't really swing that way but I didn't want to be rude so I just continued watching couple ladies in front of me dance or in actuality jump up and down and bob their head.(?) I think the crowd that I saw are either rejects of War Room, Parlors, V Lounge(in Bellevue), and/or Last Supper! It was probably one of my most horrible evening experience and it was entirely due to couple dudes hitting on me it was from the time I was at the door forking up $5/person to the long wait at the bar downstairs then giving up and going upstairs to wait in a shorter line, to people bumping into me making me spill my beer, and cleaniness seems like a huge pro during their morning hours............NOT EVENING TIME! The place was a mess! There were empty beer bottles scattered all over tables everywhere(minimum 5 per table), used beer glasses, floors were sticky, and overall I just think it sucked! Perhaps I will try their lunch next time though

I like it, I was introduced to Kells on a date. I have gone back many times. Family, Friends and Business have all had a time or three in Kells. During the day hours and dinner hours it is relaxing and enjoyable. During the night its like somebody let a frat party in. Food wise it is much better Irish Fare than other Irish pubs I have been to or frequent. I like it for a quick dinner if I'm in the area. During the summer I have wasted a few afternoons on the alley sipping a drink and watching people pass. Kells is a place I like to go to, I'm not there often enough to take notes of every fault, so for me it still has that new bar and old beer smell. Stop in and have a pint.

Toolbag city. If you're into a crowd of yuppie 30-somethings who want to talk about how their job in finance is "just the tops," go to Kells. The drinks are way overpriced. I'm sorry I don't work in the stock market/am a brokers girlfriend! P.S. the one is San Francisco is just like it.

For the bar side: My first impression was totally wrong. It's hard not to love a place full of people enjoying friends, meeting people, and dancing to live music. Get yourself some drinks, get 'em in you, and then enjoy the energy of letting loose with a bar full of people who've had a long week. It's a nice change from your too cool for school clubs of belltown and capitol hill where having too much might look just a little uncool

Any place that pours a proper pint of Guinness already has 3 stars in my book (you NEED to wait for a good one). On top of that, an atmosphere as dark yet inviting as a stout gets the additional star. Dern good food too - well as good as Irish food can actually get. Great place for a group to drink the Seattle winters away. In the summer, head across the alley to the Pink Door, where sunlight can actually penetrate.

My first two times out in Seattle were both at Kell's. The first time was me solo, just stopping for dinner late on a Monday night. Surprisingly it ended up being one of the best meals I've had, and being able to sit outside on a July night was a big bonus. The second time was New Year's, which was not so good. They charged a $15 cover and advertised a "Live Irish" bad. This bad then proceeded to play Lynyrd Skynyrd, and were done playing by 11:15. Huh. Moral of the story - as a restaurant, Kell's is pretty good. As a nightlife spot, I think there's much better options. The one in Portland works quite well for both, though.

Well its a Wednesday here at Kell's. I am sitting here sipping a good ole' pint enjoying the silence of the bar. Yes its hump day...I should be home doing some dishes or laundry.....but what the F......You only live once. So i call this place old faithful. She's a good old joint. The bartenders and waitstaff work hard to keep the drinks flowing. You really have to be an ass not to get good service. Its what it is....an Irish pub. The beers are cold and good. I can't say I have eaten here. It looks appetizing but the beer is why I come. Its funny here, there is a group of old ladies in front of me, must be taking some kinda photography class, cause they are taking many pictures of each other around table.....damn those flashes are annoying. Hey jackasses...stop that....shi^&*! At another table sit two chef's from some restaurant, wearing their dirty white robes....obviously sitting here having a few after a hard day. I like this place, not love it , but really like it. This bar gives you a good feeling like you belong. Nothing pretentious here. And the old dudes who sing from the stage aren't producing any records but are enjoying their free drinks for their rewards of playing to a happy Irish-wanna-be audience. We all have a little leprechaun in us. So if you looking for a good pint. Saddle up to one of the many open tables here and enjoy the crowd. Enjoy the booze and ....".MAY YOU BE IN HEAVEN FIVE MINUTES BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOUR DEAD!"

I've gotta admit I was TORN about the number of stars to give this place. I don't drink a lot of beer, so I normally look for good value in a cocktail. And since I'm a good home cook, I'm picky and crabby about going out to eat basic things that I could easily whip up in my own kitchen. So the caveats first: 1) Cocktails aren't the specialty here, and do expect to pay top dollar for a medium pour. You won't be "knocked" a round under any circs. 2) Food is served in smallish portions, and is quite pricey for what you get. And while I'm crazy about the roasted veggie sandwich they serve at Kells in Portland, I've never seen it on the menu here. 3) The "deedle-y deedle-y didley-deeeeee!" music is playing here ALL. THE. TIME. I love Irish music as much as the next person - or more! - but sometimes one is just not in the mood. 4) John, my favorite bartender, retired a couple of years ago. So why 4 stars? Well, because this place is nice. It's spanking clean, very cozy, kid friendly in the dining room without ever seeming to be full of screaming kids, and relaxed. You can hunker down with a pint and not worry about being rushed. It's an adult atmosphere, in the best possible sense of that word. Strike up a conversation - or not as you desire - with the bartender, or someone bellied up to the bar alongside you. Enjoy the sun streaming through the French doors that look out across Post Alley to the Sound. Or enjoy the shifting clouds and mist, this being Seattle. Light glints off cut glass... yes, that's Enya or the Pogues in the background, but if you're in the mood - how lovely!... the Guiness is pretty much always perfect... kick back... relax... take a few deep breaths to recover from the Sur la Table sticker shock you may be experiencing... and smile. You're at Kells!

Nestled away in an alley just remote enough to feel like a secret, Kells provides a fun and jovial environment where nobody will judge your excessive drinking habits I was there with a group of Irishmen and they were quite pleased with the experience, so I suppose it is almost authentic.

I've been to Kell's before and it's been okay - food is decent, but after today's experience I will likely never go back! I hadn't been in a while, but I remember the last time I went they gave good portions of soda bread (which I love) Today, they gave small pieces, thin slices. I first ordered an appetizer of bangers, which came with the bread and two pats of butter. Then I ordered the cheese appetizer to take home, which came with 8 more slices of bread. I asked for two extra pats of butter for the extra bread. The waitress told me "sure" and walked off to get them. Moments later the manager comes up and tells me that I don't need extra better (I was left wondering if this was because I'm a bit heavy - not that she was a skinny-minnie herself!) and that the cheese appetizer is not normally served with butter and I shouldn't have even gotten the two I already had! I told her that there were several slices of bread and I like eating it with butter. She told me that I was supposed to put the cheese on the bread, in essence telling me how to eat my food. It was two pats of butter I requested - not a free meal! She would not budge. My friend and I thought it was highly inappropriate for her to react like that and told the waitress so when she returned (the waitress was nice) - she said that she had gone back to grab the butter and the manager asked her what she was doing with it. When she explained to the manager that I had asked for more, the manager told her not to give me the butter as they were trying to cut costs. Cutting costs does not mean cutting good customer service. I don't feel I made an extraordinary request and the manager acted as though I asked her to pluck the moon from the sky for me. Kell's has just lost a customer and if they continue being this stingy, I bet they'll lose many more.

Stopped in with some friends to end our night. Caught the last song a what seemed to be a decent live band-was sorry we didn't make it early. Lively mixed crowd, friendly bartender. Good music cued up after the band quit playing. Nice way to close down a bar and end our night.

It's actually not that bad. Stopped in for an early dinner during the week. Had a couple of pints, a corned beef pasty (how the hell do you say this any way? I said pasty, like pastry without the "r" sound and the waitress said it more like pasty, like pause-ty.) It was tas-ty in any case. I moved on to the steak for dinner, which was cooked the way I asked (This can sometimes be a trying experience). The sauce was boring, but overall the meal was decent. I think the joint maybe slightly overpriced for dinner, but I guess maybe not due to Pike Place locale. My waitress was friendly and prompt with my beers, which is always a plus.

I was completely blown away by how bad this place was after all of the great reviews I read. They only way someone could think of Kell's as a great Irish pub is if they have never left Seattle and never been to a real Irish pub. Let me help you avoid a poor pub night with the boys. The beer is great if you are one of those people who think that Guiness is the only Irish beer. Expect to pay top dollar for the same played out brands that you picked up at the local Safeway last week. The food is terrible. You will pay nine dollars for a hot pocket! (little hint when siphoning through the other reviews Pastie = over priced hot pocket) The portions on all of the food (not just the gourmet hot pockets) are tiny which may be for a good reason since everything I have tried has been terrible. If you like paying 20 dollars a plate so that you can feel like you are in Ireland eating a 4 dollar meal then dont let me stop you. And as a final note - the music will force you to gag on your overpriced guiness after about 30 minutes of the same stereotypical Irish folk music. Leave this place for the tourists who won't stray more than a block from the market.

The draughts are a little pricey and the appetizers are measly - skip it unless you like the atmosphere and want to nurse a beer during a game. I had high hopes for this place, the interior was cozy and clean with that rich wood finish found in lots of old buildings - it was extra cute all decked out for the holidays. But the charm ended there. Our waitress was a space cadet, and came back no less than four times to tell us it was happy hour, to ask us if we were having lunch (and then informing us that they weren't serving it), to show us the happy hour menu (we were holding it) and then to take our order. We grabbed two Hoegarden's, which were cold and extremely tasty served with an ample lemon wedge. We ordered the baked brie, fruit and Irish soda bread appetizer - it was a bit of a joke. Maybe I should have stuck with the Irish mainstays, then maybe the food would have been better (of course that was my initial plan, but they weren't serving any of it at the moment). The fruit was ok, the soda bread was soda bread and the brie was hidden in croissant dough. There was one strawberry, three slices of kiwi, cantaloupe, pineapple, and three slices of the smallest orange ever - all to accompany four small slices of Irish soda bread and a piece of brie one inch by three inches... all for the bargain price of 10 dollars!! I've been to cash and carry (that land of 27 limes for less than four bucks) this 'dish' was not expensive. I believe in profits to make a living, but more than x2 and I'm going to start having a problem - unless you've done something spectacular with the ingredients (then I'll sit down, shut up and hope I can afford to come back for more) - but this my friends, was something to scream about. Eek! We asked for the check and toddled down to the Pike Place Brewery, where a Pint, sampler and two dinners were $43. If I had been dead set on an Irish pub I would have gone to Fado and skipped the fleecing.

I love Irish Pubs, and as far as that goes, they didn't disappoint. The place is in a great location with a great view, the interior is well decorated and plays great Irish music. I went with a friend on vacation, our first time in Seattle. We had been having a great experience, and this actually ended up being our only bad experience the whole trip. I'm a server and she's a bartender, so we both tend to get along with everyone pretty well and are pretty understanding of a busy bar. We went on a Wednesday afternoon and there was nobody sitting at the bar. The bartender wasn't very friendly but that didn't bother us, we just tried not to ask him too many questions. I ordered the crab sandwich which was INCREDIBLE. My friend didn't like her food at all but she tends to be a little on the picky side. The drinks were good and we got them pretty promptly. This is the problem: we noticed the bartender gave the two new customers two hats, so I decided I wanted to buy myself a hat and a few t-shirts for my boyfriend, maybe a mug too. So I waited to get the bartenders attention as my friend went to the bathroom. I noticed my friend had gotten help with shirts on the way back from the bathroom, so I walked over to see if I could pick out a few things too. I work in a busy bar so I know that it can be frustrating to help out customers with merchandise, but again, it was not busy. As soon as I opened my mouth to ask for something, the waitress huffed at me and rudely said " I have tables!" and walked away. I stood there for a little while and then got frustrated and went back to the bar to pay my tab and leave. My friend informed me that the waitress was very rude from the start, even when my friend apologized for asking to see t-shirts which she knows can be a little bothersome sometimes. She was angry for a good part of the day with how rude the waitress was to us. We will not be returning on future visits, nor recommending it to our friends who visit. I was very disappointed.

Go for this unique psuedo-Irish pub that is sooooo uncommon in Seattle. Avoid the music, as that can only cut into drowning your sorrows. All sarcasm aside, it's an alright hangout amongst the fruffy establishments of Pike Place if you can endure the frat like atmosphere that pervades it during the weekends.

I cant attest to most of their offerings. They get my 4-star rating for one reason: I've been there multiple times feeling very hungover and left feeling like a million bucks after a cup of soup and a beer. Plus, friendly staff. Great place for such a purpose.

OMG. Best pub I have ever been to IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. And I've been to a few in several different countries of the world, including Ireland itself! But never have I experienced the care and hospitality that I've received here. All of these stars can be pretty much attributed to Josh, the bartender that works there. It was my first night in Seattle and I was sitting in the bar by myself... talked to some of the super friendly patrons, and then Josh came out. He started a nice chat with me and then tried to serve me some water I didn't even ask for, and ended up spilling half of it on the bar. As he cleaned it, he said it was because I made him nervous. Sooo cute. We kept talking and I was asking him about some other places in the area, and while he answered my questions, he kept saying I should come back to Kells. I said I would, and he immediately pulled out a pen and wrote down on a piece of paper. "Please Admit Sam. Josh." He gave it to me and told me to show it to the bouncers outside when I came back. I'm like OMG. So I leave, go to Fado's a few blocks down (Fado review to come later!) then when I got sick of Fado's I decided to go back to Kells. I showed the bouncers the paper he wrote me, got in without a problem, muscled my way back up to the bar and Josh was there with his bright smile, and asked me what I wanted. I ordered a bottle of magners, and he gave it to me and didn't even charge me for it. He also kept introducing me to his friends and even though Kells was PACKED, he kept taking time out to talk to me. For example, he had to deal with a rude customer, and afterwards he asked me how I liked the way he dealt with him! Hahahaha. He asked my opinion about what music to play and everything! Then I noticed some of Josh's other friends or people he knew there came and started talking to them and he was just as sweet and attentive to them as he was with me! All of his friends told me that he was the type who would give the shirt off his back for anyone! That made me like him more because I knew he wasn't being nice just to impress me, but he really cares about his friends and customers and really knows how to make people feel good. He is probably the nicest person I have ever met in my LIFE. I hope and pray that maybe they'll transfer him to the Kells in San Francisco! Haha! Food was good! Had the seafood pasty and a side of fries! Pasty was fantastically baked, light and crunchy! fries were seasoned and needed no ketchup! Thank you Kells, thank you Josh so much for making my time in Seattle special. I will definitely be there again and everytime I am in Seattle. Please, Kells, give Josh a raise! He deserves it!

It may shock some of you that an Irish man would give Kells (one of the most reknowned Irish bars in Seattle) a low rating. The reason for the low rating is that it doesn't "keep me coming back". I live pretty close to Kells and the fact that I've only been there 4 times over the course of a year says a lot. I think the attraction of having a traditional Irish music is over rating; hardly anyone in Dublin actually goes out of their way to hear traditional music; they go out of their way to have a fun night. The food is decent but it doesn't give me that warm fuzzy feeling of eating home cooked food. The Kells in San Francisco is WAY better.

Growing up in the Boston area, I think I am a little bet spoiled when it comes to good Irish bars. On a recent trip to Seattle a good friend of mine and I had finished up dinner by City Center and decided to take a cad to Post Alley for some drinks. We were looking for a chill bar with music so we could just hang out, have some drinks, and catch up on old times. We settled on Kells Irish Pub which is like two bars in one; a music room in one half and a bar only in the other half. We opted for the music room. The interior was like just about any other Irish place, dark wood paneled walls, low lighting, and dark green paint on anything that wasn't natural wood. It was a good attempt at old world Irish charm, but they could use some more flare on the walls to add to the atmosphere. We were there on a Thursday night and it wasn't very crowded at all. The muscian, how do I put this, he couldn't carry a note in a bucket. I almost went up and gave him a 50 spot just to take a break so we wouldn't have to listen to him. However, I guess the Irish music scene in Seattle isn't quite the same as Boston, so I let him get some additional practice time in at our expense. The service was good, friendly staff, nothing to write home about, but they kept the beers coming and kept us happy. There was a good selection of Irish and domestic beers on tap and although we didn't get food the menu did look like it had a good variety of Irish and American fare. The otherwise average bar experience was saved when a group of swingers came in for some drinks and dancing. They were an odd pair of couples, lots of out of rythme dancing, laughing well above acceptable levels even for a bar, but interesting to watch. One of the guys made a pass at my friend, which I only encouraged, but another (non-swinger) couple we were sitting with didn't appreciate the gesture and the male almost took a shot at the would-be swinger. What's an Irish bar without a fight? The swinger retreated, not fist-a-cuffs was to be had that night, but it did add just a little excitement to the evening. I guess if the other Irish bar options in Seattle are nothing great, Kells would be a good choice, but nothing beats a Boston bar for me!

I'm a fan more for the atmosphere and drinks. Well I guess you can't forget about the music they play live there as well. Great place to go and let loose and sing some good old Irish songs. I have been there to eat dinner as well. Not that bad of a place to have some good food. I also have been in the upstairs for a private birthday party. Very cool to see the upstairs and have a drink and meal. They took care of whatever you needed for food and drinks. That food I had for the b-day party was super good as well. I would tell you to make it to Kells at least once!

Best Irish pub that I've been to recently. Just took my father there for Fathers Day, and he loved it. Had the cheese platter for an app, was wonderful! I had the Danny Boy special, and it was like homemade. The soda bread was perfect! I've been there quite a few times and it has always been good. Most tourists hardly ever find this pub because its tucked away down an alley. It's in a historical building, and has lots of character. Drew Carey happened upon this pub, as he was there a few weeks ago.

I'd never ask to have back the hours I have spent over the years at Kells drinking Guinness. Their insanely well attended St Patricks Day celebration is a tradition for me and mine. It can get really crowded at Kell's and I think that is as it should be. This is a place for hearty good times, not quiet chats over iced tea. You will probably have a bit of beer spilled on your shoes if it's past a certain hour, but there is live music every single night, and frequently, drunken jigging. Sometimes, drunken jigging courtesy of moi, but not lately. Kell's, located at the bottom of a very old, brick building and accessed via Post Alley, feels like a Celtic bunker of sorts, and as such, is a very cozy place in winter (if you can snag one of the 4 or 5 outdoor tables during the summer, you can enjoy the sunset over the water). Seeing as how it 'cures what ails ya,' the always perfectly poured pint of Guinness at Kell's only adds to the safety and closeness I feel at Kell's. I have an almost visible reaction of relaxation upon entering the Celtic bunker, but then again, I am Scotch-Irish Catholic, so it is pretty much built in. Once, I had the bartender send me home with someone else's debit card after closing out my tab at the end of the night (I didn't check the name on it due to the fact that I was shnocked), but it turned out to be really a good thing, because it was the debit card of a long lost friend!

Great place, nice atmosphere. Been here a few times when in Seattle and it's one of the better local Irish places (GO Celt's), and I like the way they split the bar and dining area. The food is good and the people are friendly. The bathrooms are tiny (as they are in Ireland), but for the most part it's a place I enjoy.

This place is a blast. Most memorably, I went to the spanish music night upstairs and it was totally crazy. Everyone was dancing, happy, spanish people were singing along, and literally demanded an "encore" from the DJ at the end of the night by chanting/shouting. I've never seen that and it's the opposite of what you read people say about bars with dancing in this town. Other than that with that crowds this place attracts, you are bound to meet someone or find someone you know.

Maybe it was just the night I went, but I couldn't wait to leave this place last time I went. Lame cover charge. High prices. Loud loud loud. All that and nothing interesting was going on in the bar. The two drinks we had were expensive and took forever to get to us. We would have left if we didn't have to close our tabs. The music was alright but just didn't overcome the lame experience of the night.

I think the mixed reviews are due to different expectations.... my husband and I just planned on having a couple beers and listening to some Irish music and Kells fit the bill. We got a table in the main bar area and had good service and a good view of the entertainment. There were several bachelorette parties there but it didn't bother us. It'd be a fun place for a group.

Let me tell you of a little story about Kells. Before I moved up here, I was visiting a friend of mine. He flew me up here to be moral support for him, since he was going to propose to his now wife. That night went really well (it was at the Metropolitan with a bunch of his friends from work, they made it seem like I was up here on an interview). I stayed up for a few more days, and we went drinking at Kells. The live Irish band was going. It was fun music. I've got Irish blood in me back on my father's side, so I pretended I knew what was going on. The beers were flowing. I was 6 pints in. I was drunk. We wanted to get a glass of water before heading out, so I got the waitress' attention. It was a very loud evening, so I had to yell for two glasses of water. "Two glasses of water?" she asks? Yes, I nod. She leaves. She comes back in a few minutes with two glasses of clear liquid. One in a coke glass, one in a pint glass. Both with ice. My friend grabs the coke glass, takes a big swig, hands it to his now fiancee, she takes a big swig, and they're quenched. I take the pint glass, take a big swig, and then think for a second. Water should not taste like raspberry vodka tonics. Light on the tonic. I was already pretty hammered and I could taste the alcohol in this. I turned to this random girl sitting next to me. In my drunken, slurred speech I asked her if she was from Seattle (I'm sure this seemed like a failed attempt at hitting on her). She said yes, and I asked her if this is what the water tastes like up here. She actually took a swig of my drink (in hindsight, I think she was pretty foolish for doing such a thing, but I guess I look harmless). Nope, she says, that sure as hell ain't water. Well, I really wanted a water. But I also couldn't pass up a free drink. So my friends and I downed that vodka tonic, paid our tab, and cabbed it back to the hotel. There was much drunken dialing that night, and the worst part of it was waking up the next morning at 7AM to catch a flight and still being drunk. Like, not meh drunk, talking still room spinning drunk. Kells is a cool place.

Great bar! We always seem to end up here and the people are very nice. They have good bands on St. Pat's day. I don't think I've eaten here, but I rate it 5 star for drink service and the fine people here.

So you think you know what an Irish pub is all about. So you think, "Kell's is an Irish pub, I know what it's going to be like." So you think you can list the beers, to 80% accuracy, that this pub will carry (its being an Irish pub, and all). You're probably right. But at least they do it well. A mean pint of Guinness, or if you prefer something lighter, a Smithwick's, a few verging-on-rowdy patrons, and a bonnie lass or two. Oh, and friendly bartenders. The food is good, but a bit overpriced for pub grub, even if it's not exactly "grub." My advice is to go to Mama's or Zaina or someplace else nearby for food, and then head to Kell's. Just don't go on Saint Paddy's day.

Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub is a fantastic place to go. I've been here several times and I have always had a great time. The food is great, if you like Irish pub food, the selection of beer is great, and the bartenders/staff are awesome. I've been here on Sunday afternoons, weekend nights, and for happy hour. I've never been disappointed with Kells. If you want to go to Kells for St. Patrick's Day, good luck. You have to purchase tickets well before the day as they are usually overbooked and overcrowded. In the summer, Kells is great because there is outdoor seating in which you can see West Seattle and the boats that come into Seattle, and you can always count on Kells to have live bands on the weekends. I believe there is a cover charge on the weekend nights after 9pm but it's pretty cheap for Seattle. Kells is a must visit restaurant/bar.

My man and I went there one night to check out a band I've heard a lot about over the years- Okham's Razor. THEY were pretty darn neat. I found it cheesy but really impressive how well they covered Michael Jackson amongst other songs you would never imagine heard done by an Irish-esque band. Anywho, about the place- it's big...no it's huge. But the sad thing is, especially being on a Saturday night was that we could only make it 20 feet to the end of the bar...by the door. it was graciously packed with a ton of college kids, but there was a group of loud, obnoxious middle-aged drunk women right by us. The bartender was nice, but seemed quite overwhelmed. Took him forever to get us a second drink- by that time we planned on leaving so we got his attention to pay out and he gave us each a cider on the house. That was pretty nice of him. I'd probably go back there again, but only if there was a really good reason. hell, we couldn't make it through the crowd to get in the area where the stage was and we didn't bother going upstairs. It was a nice touch that they had speakers in there, being such a large place. Parking was a bitch, too- we had to walk quite a few blocks after having to resort to paid parking.

Okay, I realize that anyone else might have avoided this lesson-learned-the-hard-way, but I had the oysters at Kells. What!? They came from right across the street from the market, so what could go wrong? Well, it turns out that the kitchen can serve oysters, but don't count on them coming out clean. After indulging in a couple raw oysters on the half shell, we realized that our plate was crawling and swimming with little sea critters/bugs. We alerted our server, but she seemed put out by our outrage. "Oh, those? Well, that happens all the time when you get raw oysters on the half shell". Um, no it doesn't, lady. She seemed reluctant to comp the item off our bill. Bottom line: go for the drink and stay away from the food.

A decent place depending on the hour. I didn't spend a lot of time here since I came late but it was dinner time and the whole place had a strange vibe of after-work-need-to-unwind and families sitting down to dinner. The two worlds seemed a tad strange. Fast drink service and a great list of beers and whiskeys on the board. The crowd seemed amicable. Young friends hanging out and the older crowd sitting down to a meal. There was some old guy in a kilt. Awesome. We left as the band started setting up around 7pm. That's our cue to leave. I'm way too picky about live music.

It's in the middle of Post Alley in the market, just up the way from Cafe Campagne, and it's a nice place to catch a pint. They have been around for awhile, so the brass and wood inside has a nice patina to it. It's a little more costly than some other pubs around, but hey, they serve pasties here, which make up for it. It's been awhile since I've been here, but it's about time I go back.

Went here this weekend for their St. Patty's day celebration.....which, as one can imagine, was crazy. Besides having my ass grabbed by two randoms in less than five minutes (fucking creepers!) I ended up having a rather good night. My advice for St. Patty's day is to head upstairs...hope I'm not giving away any secrets here....but there was no line for the bathroom AND it was clean.... no vomit....no pee puddles....which on St. Pat's is like pretty much the norm..... and upstairs seemed to be a much cooler crowd. My heart went out to the older Irish gentleman trying to teach all of us drunkies a traditional jig.....someone had the brilliant idea to capture this all on film too.... I'm sure it looks like a train wreck... anywho, good times, good night.

This place is hit or miss. It tends to miss at night, but hits during the day. Me and a friend (and also fellow yelper), had lunch(chicken salad) there today. It was actually quite nice and relaxed. The service was efficient as well.

A generic corporate Irish bar. Been a few times, solo and with big groups. I've never had the food or sat in the restaurant. The only real annoyance I've encountered is the music is a bit too loud, as most places like this, at times. I may end up going back, but I tend to prefer more quite places like White Horse which is right next door.

It's really the atmosphere that makes this place work. The food and beverages are exactly what you'd expect but a few dollars more, but there's Smithwick's, so all good. Try it with someone you're enjoying giving a hard time to today! Tell 'em Dan sent 'ya! They won't know who it is, but it's nice to feel included, 'ya know?

I agree that the Kell's in SF is way nicer, but Kell's here in Seatown is awesome. I can never say I have had the food, just came to enjoy a pint of Guiness or two or seven. That's what I love about Kell's for me. I have so many memories of sitting around singing "who the fuck is alice" til the wee hours, chatting with some dude with an Irish accent I couldn't understand, and one time see former Gov Lowery there. Hell yes, Kell's, hell yes.

My wife and I went here for lunch last week with some friends that were in town visiting. It was a late lunch and Kells wasn't very busy. I ordered a beer to start and (luckily) before taking a drink, my friend noticed that there was a hair in the beer (of the short and curly variety). I almost lost my appetite. The waitress was no where to be found so I walked the beer up to the bar and requested a new one. No hair in this one. We ordered our lunch. I had a salad which was pretty good, but probably not worth the price. My friend had the soup and crab cakes. Before taking her first bite of soup, yep, another hair, and it was of the same variety. This time the waitress was around and happily brought another soup out. However, even after complaining about the hair in my beer and the hair in my friends soup, both items remained on the bill and no compensation was given. We didn't ask for compensation, but I would have expected it, wouldn't you? Doubt I'll ever go back here.

On a recent business trip to Seattle, I was in desperate need of a good beer in a chill bar after too much work and little play. After walking for about 20 blocks and not finding any bars that lived up to my boss' liking (who invited HER?), finally we stumbled upon Kells. As an Irish alcoholic - I mean person, I knew that any Irish pub would be a friend of mine. Plus it's almost my namesake, can you really go wrong there (ok I'm only an 1/8 Irish but still)? However, I have been to some Irish pubs that were just bars serving good beer so I wanted to check it out. Success! Kells is truly an Irish pub. Ok so I haven't been to Ireland but I know deep in me bones that it is. My colleagues sat at a table near the entertaining live band, but I was feeling anti-social and bitchy so I sat at the bar to drown my sorrows in a pint or five and a shot of Patron to get the party started. They have a pretty decent beer selection, I tried the house brew which was enhh. But then I had a "Mac & Jacks" and I was satisfied. The bartender was cute, young, friendly, and quick with the tap - just how I like 'em. The waitress was friendly, and so were the patrons who kept stopping by to order their beer. I even was invited to leave my pity party and join a local college student who was meeting her boyfriend's sister for the first time, and she offered to buy me a beer. Say what? That doesn' t happen in LA so I was shocked. The hard alcohol selection was bountiful which is always a bonus to the nice beer selection. The only food I consumed was my liquid dinner, but if it's as tasty as the male customers, then I give it a thumbs way up. But enough about the blonde Jake Gyllenhaal look-alike... Here's a summary of Kells: *Beer - tasty and a decent selection, but the house brew ain't that great *Service - friendly, quick, and not afraid to give you change in singles *Price - excellent, at $5 a pint I think that's a bargain (Patron shot was $10) *Bathroom - small and stinky, just like a true Irish pub, right? But there were three stalls for the ladies, always good to keep the line movin *Patrons - outstanding, friendly, good looking, and boisterous *Plus the taxis were plentiful and not shady. My only complaint was the random dog that was in the bar. I know I didn't drink THAT much and it was just weird... I mean I know how drunk people act, but drunk dogs? And yes, my boss finally left and I could booze it up in peace. Cheers to THAT!

I have always love this place and lately decided to eat here on night with my out of town friends. Such a liveley Place to people watch and join in on all the irish energy. We had been stroling around looking for seafood so I ordered the clams and some oysters. OMG I had know idea the freshness the oozed out of my shellfish! I will for sure be headed back here just for some more steamers and oysters on the half shell which were so moderately priced. The flavors were spot on and reminded me of Ireland. Of course I had to wash everything down with some good guiness and I bailey shot for my dessert! so excited they had seafood!

I may just love this because it is in Post Alley... and thus away from the madness of the fishmarket... Or perhaps its the irish people who work there, the beer selection, the perfect pour of Guinness, or the outdoor seating... hmmm. Well, its definitely not their specially brewed Kells' irish lager which makes Rogue brewery look like complete cowboys... Sorry, I digress... but can you beat a good Guinness in the sunshine? Nor can I... so four stars it is.

since i moved to belltown ive been desperately in search of your classic "corner" pub. the kind of place that caters to the locals in a friendly, in-expensive and un-pretentious manner. my experience with kells proved to be quite the study in dualtiy, with the day that i went greatly effecting the quality of my visit. i first went to kells on a thursday night around midnight after work and found the pub to be exactly what i was looking for. the bartender was friendly and accomodating (he even bought me a round) and the bar clientele were generally outgoing and talkative, not just involved in their own cliques. it was fun, energetic yet imtimate, and the kind of place you usually can only find back east. imperial pints were 5 bucks a pop, but hey, its downtown, i understand. all in all, it was great. i decided to go back that friday night, assuming (my mistake) that the experience would be relatively the same. i came back at midnight again, assuming that the weekend crowds would be somewhat dispersed by this time. upon arriving i was a confronted with a 5 dollar cover (!) all the sudden, and to discover that this quiet little corner pub had been overrun by tourists, college kids and the veritable "bridge and tunnel" crowd. it was loud, hot, over-crowded, impossible to get a drink and had generally been transformed into the "meat market" that is typical of first ave belltown. call me naive (ill be the first to admit, im new here) but i assumed this place would somehow dodge that type of crowd. if thats your scene, go for it. pack the bar, shout above the crowd, order 9 dollar jager drinks and then cab it back to the suburbs. just dont come on a weekday night, thats for the rest of us.

Pikes Market Place is one of the great hi-points of Seattle. in one of the many ally ways of pikes lies one of the coolest Irish Pubs in Seattle. As you walk in you find yourself in a great bar with a nice wooden bar. I really enjoyed their beer selection. they also have great Irish music. one of my many hang out spots when i was living up in Seattle.

Kells is THE Irish pub in Seattle. For some reason, the Guinness tastes better at Kells. They have great meat Pasties that have a nice buttery and light crust with tasty meat fillings. The Soda Bread! It haunts my dreams it's so good. I go to eat there on occasions just for the soda bread! All the regular things like Shepard's pie and hearty soups. Rory always has a nice pint waiting for me and makes it a point to try to cripple me whenever I stop by. As long as it's not too crowded it's a nice spot to have a few drinks and sometimes listen to the live band. Everybody loves to hear, "Rocky road to Dublin". Slinte!

What can I say....a short walk up a flight of steps and I am halfway to an attitude adjustment and that right there justifies at least three of the stars. They pour a good shot, remember what I drink and never seem "slammed" even when the bar is packed. Everyone who works there is great no matter what day it is, however the crowds do change almost drastically depending on the night as noted by another reviewer. Generally I avoid Friday night.

I was in the pub section,I don't drink, I was their for Penny arcade game expo afterparty with the hosts of The Totally Rad Show (pod cast) It's was packed with live Irish music. The wait staff was slow and took forever but was really busy. It was best to go to the bar area to get your drink then to rely on the waitress. I ordered a Shepereds pie that hit the spot but the side of veggys were over cooked. I don't know if the party was 5 star and meeting new friends or the venue. We did enjoy the music as druckin geeks were attemping to do a drunkin stuper of a irish jig .the food was good thought there was no Bar food, the people did drink said that they couldn't belive they did not have microbrews on tap (though he was from portland) but everyone was drinking Gennius and i was drinking a Cola that was filled with ice so acouple of sips and it was gone. I would not go out of my way to go here but i would not mind comming back.

We were having a relaxing night until the bouncers started screaming at everyone to get out at 1:42am. A little early?... maybe. A little rude, definitely. Feeling like we were trespassing drunks, not worth it. Try somewhere else....

Music every night starting at 9:00. On the week days its not super busy so you can request any Irish folk song you can think of. The Unicorn song is my personal favorite. But be prepared, they may ask you to get on stage and do the hand motions. The wait staff is always friendly and there is plenty of outside seating if its warm out. Be sure to order a Irish Car Bomb... The wait staff will show you how to drink it if your a newbie.

So i trekked up to Seattle again this year after a three year hiatus. I love this city, there is just so much to see! My buddy who lives just up the hill suggested we go to Kells and told me, that this particular night was the best because it's always hoppin. Though I can't remember what night it was. I think it was Saturday night. I'll update when I talk to him. But he was right, the place was lively well at least on one side it was. But by the time we left, both sides were happening. Two sides you ask? Well it's a traditional Irish pub on one side, and not sure what it is on the other side. The other side was a much younger crowd (mid 20s). There was also a bar in that side as well. Both bars were too small. It was hard to get a drink unless you ponied up to the bar. The bartender was pretty good but flirted a little bit too much with the women. What can I say, I was flirting with them too! Great old fashioned irish music, lots of revelry, laughter and dancing. But I noticed when the band wasn't on stage, they played great classic rock where every one was singing. All in all, this is a great place that is a little hard to find. It's down an alley off 1st ave I believe. Check your maps. I've eaten there once back in 2006, I think I got the irish stew. it was very good if my memory serves me. But I'm glad I went there, I had a lot of fun trying to get my buddy to talk to these women at the bar. Still kind of hard to meet women there as there are just too many tables and not enough room to talk. Also very loud!!! I just wish they would tear down the middle wall and make it more like one big place. Not sure why there are two distinct bars in one place.

This will come as a bit of a shock to those that know me. I normally am not a fan of this place. Sure, it's great to go and watch your friends in the summer pick up on lonely tourist girls who are a bit lacking in self-esteem. But the food sucks and it gets a "meat market" feel later on in the night (see prior reviews about creepers). Fast forward to weekend prior to St. Pat's Day, 2008. Met people there on Saturday. Crazy busy but no cover (considering Fado charged $20, great!). Still crappy food and busy, but Rory, the bartender, gets 10 stars in my opinion. He remembers us even though we don't go in that often, and is attentive even while being bombarded for 52 Irish carbombs. However, his sincerity and desire to take care of customers came shining through this night. While trying to close our tab in which others were on, our "friend of a friend" swore he only had 3 beers...all day...Well did he? I don't know. I hadn't been there during the whole time. Rory actually interrupted our conversation and explained to me that he had a lot more than that, and insisted that the "friend of a friend" pay a much higher part of the tab so that I wouldn't get stuck with it. Kudos to you Rory! That was super nice and much appreciated! I would have been stuck with it if you had not said something. I hope the "friend of a friend" still gave you the tip you deserved. (Just maybe change out that food...)

Eh, I've seen much better Irish Pubs [check my reviews], in town and elsewhere and I've never really liked this chain too much. The music is somewhat lacking and the food isn't as good as I've had. I guess I'm spoiled with higher standards, you should be too.

They get pretty close to making you feel like you're actually in Ireland, and frankly, if you've ever had real Irish food in a run of the mill pub in Ireland you wouldn't rave about the food. Then again, just about anything washed down with a pint of Guinness can be good. Which sums up Kells. Listen to the music, which is good, and wash it all down with Guinness.

This is a great place located down an alley off of First Street. It was a great bar that was comfortably crowded. I didn't have to wait in line forever to buy a beer and they had a great Irish band the night I was there.

Really good, "stick-to-your-ribs" Irish stew and a nice head on a pint of Guinness. I do believe the Irish are on to something here. Come for dinner and stay for the Celtic music! Ye'll be plannin' the next trip 'ome ta Ireland!

If I was into inebriated frat boys, I'd be knee deep in drunken but regrettable debauchery. If I was into middle aged gentlemen, I'd be inundated with supposed suave high end beer drinkers. Needless to say neither of these types are appealing to me. Kell's on a Friday night is about as diverse as the audience at a Casey Treat sermon. Kell's isn't the place to go for an intimate conversation, a night out for a few drinks in a comfortable environment. If you want to pretend you are in an authentic Irish pub this isn't the place for you either. Rather if you want to get the wrong idea of an authentic Irish bar this is the place for you. Kell's finest point is the beer. The live music wasn't half bad either but I'm partial to the fiddle. It was oddly erotic to witness the guitar player of the band give birthday spankings to a drunk birthday girl. Those slaps sure did reverberate through the bar. I would rather visit Kell's on a weekday to avoid the sausage fest. If only it was a crowd of boys that I'd be interested in.

A favorite pub for an after (Pikes Place) Market drink. A wide variety of Scotch (yum) and small local micro beer selection. Cozy on a cold day. Easy to find in Post Alley, at Pike Place Market.

Guinness is a meal, and we have had many meals here since college days @ UW. I've always liked it here, the diversity of those that wander in from PP, and the regular residents make it cozy. On the last weekday evening visit we chose dessert between Stout meals - holy Celtic crosses of love, the apple puffy cream thing is heavenly! YOU MUST TRY. Alas, don't forgo a nibble on the mint leaf.......it helps with Guinness breath, unless your partner likes that sort of thing. The service was stellar, maybe the killer sunset that evening made everyone chipper. Now that I am older and attached, I do not stay for the rowdy heathen show. But I have heard that it's great for the singleton females that want some Irish red-breasted whiskey courage in their faces. One point that blows, the bar next door allows patrons to smoke like chimneys a stone's throw to Kell's entrance...if you are allergic like us, hold yer breath!

I have been here 3 times and something goes wrong everytime - no more kell's for me. Which sucks b/c i like Futball TV coverage, the Irish pub decor and the beer/food selection. I have had dirty drinkware, plateware, and silver both times I ate there. And they even increased the tip on my credit card reciept than what I had written - I think that's cerdit card fraud. Three drinks - $3 tip not the $5 you added on. I was wasted so I know the numbers were legible. Kell's will continue on despite my opinion - its one of the few Irish Pubs downtown.

My friends and I stopped in here after a very long drive from Lake Crescent. We were starving. I had the start of a cold and felt miserable. We were wandering around trying to find some place to just get some food in us. Sounds like we were off to a good start, right? The food was surprisingly delicious. Since it was in a touristy spot, I really didn't have much faith that the food would be good. I ordered the seafood pasty. Everyone was pretty happy with their selection although my friend's clam chowder was a bit lackluster. Our server was great and we all left satisfied with our bellies full.

I'm only giving them one star because there wasn't anything lower. My husband and I took some friends there from out of town and the service was horrendous. No one would even acknowledge us. We were sitting outside and ended up going inside to get our drinks. The servers were running around like chickens with their heads cut off and it wasn't that busy. Not for 3+ of them! We finally got a servers attention to order a little snack. It had been more than 30 minutes and still hadn't got our food when a table beside us got theirs. They ordered a long while after we did. We asked the girl we ordered from and she snapped that she wasn't our server and it couldn't have been over 30 minutes because she had only been there for 30 minutes. I got up and went inside to ask our supposed server and was quickly snatched up by a manager. I then told her how we'd been waiting over 30 minutes and the same rude girl starting getting extremely out of line and interrupting what I was saying. The manager pulled me aside and tried to make light of it. She then brought out a round of shots for us. Our food came about 5-10 minutes later (they obviously put the order in after I said something)... The rude server then dropped our bill by throwing it on the table and gave a half assed apology. They made us pay for the food! We did but then the day after we ate there we both had food poisoning... Needless to say we will not be returning here.

Not a bad place to go for a drink or two. It's very dark-lit and open. I didn't care for the food too much since we were mostly there for drinks. The service was a bit slow too.

cute little irish hang out how ever there are places like conor brynt or fado (for food) that i like better i feel this place might have become more of a tourist trapp. however still not a bad place to grab a bit to eat and drink the dark wood booths make for a place to linger.

Gotta love this Post Alley location for Kells Irish Pub. Can't say much about their food but the Pub has it all going on. Live Irish entertainment livens the evening. Get there early to get a seat. Never had a bad time - if my memory is in tact.

For a pub the food is beyond my expectations, portions a tad small but the price was right. Its a pub so high marks for its look and feel. The Guinness was excellent. Had the luxury of meeting the owner and his wife, grand folks and could only be bettered if they had been born in Scotland. Ive been in this bar a handful of times always worth a return.

I like their..... fresh oysters? And location was pretty sweet?? And the service was fine??? Yeah I think that's where I'm at! The oysters were $1.50 each, but they were quite tasty and I was happy to have the sauce served on the side and the little uber-mini "salad" of greens that came as a "side" on the oyster plate. The unexpected soda bread (and butter) plate that arrived at our table was good. I wasn't a big fan of the soda bread, but I do enjoy trying new things so I was happy on that front. The side of beets (with blue cheese??) tasted just as I expected it to. Guess that's a good thing! The beer was.... well, probably "normal" pricing for the area.... but, frankly, $5-6 for a beer? No thanks! The one big bad thing:Two of us ordered the lamb farl. The aioli-type sauce was tasty, but that lamb was.... dry and on the flavorless side. We felt like we were almost eating lamb jerky. We contemplated the idea of sending it back, but we were very hungry and very strapped for time so we sucked it up and ate it. Kells wasn't my cup of tea, but it was..... fine. I probably would have given them 4 stars if that lamb had been juicy and soft.

Well Kell's way to make a first and LASTING impression on me. So I took some friends of mine to go watch the Sounders FC play because I heard great and wonderful things about the atmosphere and the Sounders crowd. LIES it was all LIES !!! For starters, when does a basketball game outweigh a soccer game in an Irish Pub. HELLO GUYS !! Way to go in showing your support to our LOCAL community. You guys made me miss 37 minutes of the Sounders game. FAIL !!! So we ordered a round of drinks. Those went well. Ordered food. Staff was overwhelmed with orders. Took a very very long time to get our food out. Was STUCK watching basketball instead of SOCCER. I was getting very irate that they were playing basketball and not soccer so I brought it to the attention of our waitress that if they didn't put the soccer game on on 1 of the TV screens that we were going to leave. I told her we came to watch SOCCER not basketball. After we were done with the first round of drinks we ordered a second round of drinks and food. French fries was swimming in SALT. The second round of drinks never showed up. Instead she brought water.... really? you guys are cutting us off after 1 drink. How retarded is that. So finally when they did decide to put the soccer game on. My friends bounced after 10 minutes due to the lousy service they had received. Way to GO Kell's. Lets just scare everyone off why don't you. If I could take stars away from this place I would give them a -3 rating.

Reviewing as a Pub and Nightlife Spot: Went here on a Saturday night and there was tons and tons of room as the eye could see on a Saturday night. So, it's a nice huge place if you want to go somewhere to drink with a large group. By 10pm all the tables were packed. I don't know that there is anything special about this place but it doesn't suck either. They did have live traditional irish music with some rock thrown in which was a nice change of pace. People got into it and were dancing to it also.

Please note that this review only stems from visiting on weekend nights for drinks and not for a food purchase or for Happy Hour. Pros: Great Service, Friendly Staff, Fun live Bands, Strong Drinks Cons: Needs more fans for ventilation (Hot on warmer days) and at times the music is a touch too loud (Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of loud music but when my ears hurt and I have to shout all night it might be a touch too loud) Go here for fun, dancing, and to enjoy drinks with friends. It is your typical pub atmosphere but was overall an excellent place to kick back and have a few brews. We had a lot of fun and I hope to eventually try out the Happy Hour as well as I have heard good things.

Irish Pub? Sure... I guess so. Magners was involved, stew was on the menu, football (soccer) was on TV, and our server had an Irish accent. Oh, and apparently they have a wicked live music rotation, but I was on the restaurant side and wasn't privy to the entertainment. In Seattle, this'll have to due.

We went here after the baseball game. When we walked in, we noticed how dark the place was (even for a pub). The server was nice but she was handling a lot of tables and it was hard to get her attention when we needed to order and for the check. In terms of liquor, their draft beer selection was limited. We ordered: irish cheese platter- the 4 cheeses were good but the serving was so small corned beef pasty- pretty good not our fave irish pub and probably wont go back to this place.

I went here a few months ago actually, I'm surprised I forgot to write a review! I came here with my girlfriend and another friend after the Pike Place Ghost Tour. Apparently, Kells is haunted but I didn't run into any ghosts. Kells feels warm and inviting on a cold winter day (which this was). There are two large rooms. One had live music playing and was more of a bar. We sat in the dining area. I had the shepherd's pie. My girlfriend had the lamb stew and our vegetarian friend had the potato soup. All of it was really good. My shepherd's pie had a really delicious mashed potato topping, but it was a bit on the small side for the price, which is the main thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars. As for beer, I had a Kells Lager and enjoyed it (and sampled my friend's Guiness - also yummy.) I would definitely go back, but would recommend the tourist off-season.

A bit pricey, but has some amazing appetizers. We had the fresh oysters, chicken pasty, and Potato Farl Wrap. All that and several craft beers made for a nice little evening.

Pop'd in for a quick lunch and was glad we did. The charming Irish woman that owns the place took our order and at our prompting shared some of the Pubs history...really fun, I would have paid just for that. We had the Locks and Brie on Soda Bread, Dublin Coddle and two pieces of their whisky cake...all of it was very good. The back of the menu BLEW US AWAY! I love Scotch, maybe too much, and they have DOZENS of different kinds. Had to drive so I could not partake but I will be back to drink my way through their menu very soon.

This Irish pub is like all of the other Irish pubs I have been to. It's a good thing and a bad thing. Nothing distinguishable from the rest - but if it feels comfortable, so be it. Come. Get Irish beer/whiskey/food. Leave happy.

After my last experience I keep regretting the decision to go to Kells instead of waiting 30 min for a Table at the wonderful Pink Door. I can't comment on the party scene here because our only purpose was to eat something. My hubby ordered the Shepperd's pie, which was the only decent dish. I ordered the grilled salmon salad and what I got was a bunch of sad looking lettuce, with no dressing, and a barely warm & dry piece of bland salmon, that ladies and gentlemen for $20 dollars. OUCH! it still hurts! By then I kept thinking... it's OK! I'll get my revenge when is time for dessert... I had their fabulously decadent bread pudding before and that I know was GREAT... oh but wait.. they got rid of it!!!!!!!! comm'on people! really? Never again I will go to Kells even if the wait at Pink Door is 2 hrs! Maybe for drinks while I wait so I can cross the alley to eat REAL FOOD!

Stopped in here for a few hours when my boyfriend and I were visiting Seattle, and I was quite impressed. We've noticed that when we were in Seattle, there isn't such thing as garlic fries. Being a lover for garlic fries, I craved them often when we were there. We asked our waitress if it was possible to order them, but she gave us a funny look and told us no. A few moments later, she comes back and asked us what exactly we mean by garlic fries, but really it's exactly how it sounds, and it's damn amazing. But, she ended up getting the cook to make us some, and it was delicious. What a great drunken night with our new friend Hoegaarden.

Best Irish restaurant and bar in the city of Seattle. And, the best of many other cities I've been to also. Great mix of tourIsts, locals and everyone else, I can always count on Kells for a great meal and live music. I even found a wife here!

I went to this Irish pub last night with my girlfriend, some friends, and some family visiting from out of town. I am a huge fan of Irish pubs, and probably would have loved this place if not for the God awful service we received from the waitress Carly. She was the worst person I have ever had serve me in my life. I use to be a waiter for about 4 years and am usually very understanding of slow service due to the place being busy or short staff, which it was in her defense. However, she did not bring us any water, and we were going to drink a lot and spend several hours in this place. Our first drink order was brought to us with her spilling an Irish Coffee all over my friends mother, and not even having the basic people skills to say "I'm sorry", and then my friends beer had floating gross stuff in it (which looked like spit). When we told Carly about the drink she just said yeah that doesn't look right and went and got another one for her. Upon returning with the new drink she placed it on the table and said "here you go this one doesn't have any shit in it". Not even a sorry for the drink having some floating stuff in it. She would come throughout the time we were there and get more drinks for us, but would walk away while we were talking to her and then she would bring us wrong drinks. When bringing our drinks she would stand in one spot, spilling a bit of the drinks as she was trying to reach across the table while yelling out what drink it was instead of bringing it to the person who ordered it. She was short with her responses the entire night, and it wasn't because of us because we did not even say anything about her poor service (except about the beer with the gross stuff in it). Upon paying the bill we split the bill 3 ways. One group left the place about 15 minutes before the rest of the group and paid $60 of the bill. The remaining amount was split by two other groups. One paid with a card for $39 and the other paid cash to cover the rest of the bill. We left a cash tip on the table of only $10 due to the ridiculously awful service. The part of the night that is the reason why I am writing this review was about to happen. She had the nerve to come over to our table after noticing that only $10 was her tip and saying "we owe her $40 more dollars for the bill", which we then got very upset and told her that we paid the entire bill. She then said "well the thing is I didn't get a tip", which we responded to her that we left her the $10 on the table as her tip because she gave us awful service the entire night and didn't deserve a better tip. In fact she didn't deserve a tip at all, and the fact that she was so classless to come up to us and say we owe her more money. That was the last straw. I normally leave very generous tips knowing that the job is very hard and will leave at least 20%, however not for this type of treatment. This is why I am leaving this review. Carly is the worse waitress period. This place could have been a local spot for me, but now I will tell everyone I know to never go to this place. The fact that I am even taking the time to write this shows how awful this server was since this is the second review I have ever written in my life, and the other was for a friends, friends pizza place. Kells please do something about your service especially your waitress Carly!!!

After a full day of walking everywhere, we stopped here to end our night. It's a small bar. I didn't have anything to drink, but I wanted dessert. I ended up getting the cheesecake and it made my night. I did feel awkward, because we were a party of 8 asian people in a place that seemed like asian people shouldn't be in. But the service was really good for a Friday night. We also ended up getting oysters and they melt in your mouth. I would go here again for the oysters. Don't expect to come here and hang out with your regular, feel good type music. It was very different and I can't explain it. But there was a banjo and a fiddle. I have nothing against it, but I just want to warn you ahead of time. Oh yah, supposedly the place is haunted too. It used to be a mortuary before it became a bar waaaayyy back in the day. But I didn't have any unusual experiences that night.

I just wasn't overly impressed with the food taste or the selection. Too be honest, I'm not much of a fan of irish food and was here for a friend's birthday. So take this review witha grain of salt. I did love the view from the deck just outside the front door. If I was up for drinking that night, the selection would have been amazing! But, I think there still needs to be more of a selection of food. After all, it's not the potato famine anymore! I did have the best waitress experience I've ever had, however. She was friendly, funny and energetic, all after subbing for a 5th grade class earlier in the day. Just look for the tall girl and make sure you sit in her section because she was amazing!

Decent selection of beers, although I would love to have seen a wider range of local beer on tap. Tasty Irish-inspired menu: we had the corned beef and cabbage as well as the corned beef pasty. Both had wonderful beef flavor. Belfast bangers for appetizer, served with a spicy mustard. I would recommend it!

Good Guinness pour. The place feels a little tourist trappy to me. We only had a drink at the bar so I can not comment on the food. The bartender was welcoming and friendly.

I used to go to Kells occasionally and always enjoyed it. Tonight I went in for some grub and left hungry. I didn't want a $25 leg of lamb, just some pub food. I ordered a crab cake and a seafood pasty, and while both were good, the crab cake was the size of a large golf ball and both it and the pasty were overpriced for what I got. I had to stop off for something to eat on the way home. Never again. Next time I'll go to the Owl and Thistle.

I wish I could give negative numbers. I took a visiting friend and his wife here a few weeks back and had the worst service ever. When I mentioned that things were really slow, we received a rude response. When we told them that they had messed up our order, they became agitated. When we refused to allow them to switch food around on our plates (that had already been eaten from) to "make it work", they became angry. I couldn't believe that they were not willing to cook fresh food and instead wanted us to eat off of other people's plate. I was in shock. We told them to cancel the rest of our order and that we would finish what we had and would pay for what we ate. After receiving our money, they kicked us out without letting us finish!!! So, to sum it up, a group of 40 year olds who had only one round of beer got kicked out of Kells after paying for food that was not what we ordered. Doesn't make a bunch of sense to me...

The fact that this lovely Celtic bar is right down on Post Alley so close to Pike's Market already gives it street cred. I mean really. Really good Guinness this close to a body of water makes me miss Galway immediately! Let's get it out of the way now. Yes, you could eat better food elsewhere. The question is can you find a better all around game somewhere else? I mean pub/live music/social scene/restaurant....I don't know in this town. The staff each time I have gone (lucky for me) have been jaw dropping pretty ladies. Equally pleasing is that they were also very helpful, intelligent and competent. You can't get that sort of trifecta most days let alone each time you go unless someone is paying attention!! I'd recommend Kells to anyone who knows and appreciates a great bar and a good restaurant!

Kells used to be a decent place to go, hang out, grab some eats and a beer. Not anymore. I hadn't been in a while - but this was not my first, nor second, nor third time there - I promise you it will be my last. We walked in around 5:30 pm on a Sunday night for dinner. It wasn't busy at all. A few folks at the bar, a few tables taken. We sat down, our server comes over, she says "dinner for two?" slaps down the menus, turns and leaves without going over any kind of specials or offering to take a drink order. She just simply walked away. I was a bit surprised to say the least. 5 minutes go by. Okay. Um? Where'd she go? She doesn't come back. We've BEEN ready to order. Now we are nearing 10 minutes. tick... tock... tick... She's sitting at the bar chatting with her bartender buddy never giving us a 2nd glance nor thought. Well? She can keep chatting. We got up and left.... and we won't be going back sad to say. After reading the other reviews of late, I'd have to agree that Kells has become quite a joke. Bad service is one thing, but completely ignoring your customers? tsk tsk tsk.....

Our waitress was awesome, and gave us great service with a smile. The bartender was a champ and let me charge my phone behind the bar. Great atmosphere and delicious happy hour goodies!! I really liked how our waitress stopped us from ordering appetizers at full price since we were 15 minutes from happy hour. Very cool!

Having been to the Kells in Portland, and seen the reviews of the Seattle location, I was skeptical to come in. I like a good pub, and enjoy a laid back atmosphere, so we ended up stopping in for lunch when the rest of the Pike Place joints seemed too fast (window service without seating) or fancy (most restaurants nearby). I'll start out with my overall impression: not bad! The indoor seating was moderately lit- doors open to the patio helped, and the wood seats and paneling was very appropriate for a pub. The menu was fine- what you would expect at a pub- and the beer selection was decent. I ordered a Guinness ($6), and it was a very professionally poured Imperial Pint. I had a BLT with Potato Soup ($7.95), and my husband has a smoked salmon sandwich with the soup (not sure of price). Both came on thin Irish soda bread, and were on the small side. This was fine with me, as I don't really enjoy the oversized American portions most restaurants serve. I came hungry and left full, and thats perfect for me. The ingredients tasted fresh, and my only complaint was that the menu said "thick cut bacon," and my sandwich had regular run of the mill bacon. Oh well. The service was fine, and the place seemed good for two or for a group. I wouldn't knock this place at all- I enjoyed my lunch.

A friend and I stopped in for a quick beer before dinner at The Pink Door, because we had seen their ad in the Sounders FC program and we like to support those who support our boys. We were very impressed with the ambiance, the prices, and the selection. There was definitely a pub feel, lots of dark woods, but the space is very open and encourages friendly conversation. Happy hour happens daily 4-7 and any draft (other than Hoegaarden, sad) is $4.50. Our server was great. We plan to return on a night on which they're playing live music and have dinner. The decor and menu looked authentic to Ireland. I am looking forward to trying a potato farl.

I love this place, day and night. I always love finding my way down to Post Alley to find this gem. The atmosphere here is fantastic. The food is authentic. The drinks make you want to stay.....ok the atmosphere makes you want to stay. We normally come down to Seattle and try to get a good feel for the restaurants and pubs here. This is a fantastic place to enjoy the city and embrace music, your friends, and a few spirits.

If you like beer and ale, this is your place. The wine list is okay, but nothing to write home about. The food is hearty, but hardly superlative. The menu tends toward American versions of Irish standards. You won't find lamb in your shepherd's pie, for instance. On a Friday night, the bar can get quite busy, and the people watching is decent.

I went here the other day for lunch and hardly recognized it without all the belltown douche bags that show up at night. It is on par with the expensive-ness of the market restaurants. I love the owners, they are Irish and very cordial. I also love that it is haunted and there is so much history (it used to be Buttersworth mortuary - you can still see the sign painted on the brick building). The food I was not impressed with. I had the vegetarian pastie and a soup. Very small portions, quality negotiable. BUT I still stay it is a great place because of the location and atmosphere.

BEST BAR IN SEATTLE. In my opinion. Always great music, in either half. The main half has always had a lot of fun live music, not always my style, but always full of great energy. The right half of the bar is ALWAYS playing great dancing songs...usually by midnight a little dance floor forms at the back of the bar. I think what I love most about Kell's is that everyone is always so happy and friendly. The bartenders make great drinks at reasonable prices. There are a ton of attractive men. It's got a relaxed vibe, not "uppity" like Belltown tends to be. Also, the doorman always lets my friends and I in at a discounted price...sometimes free! AND, last time I was there Lucy Liu was there and we kinda danced together...well. Next to each other. Her hair brushed my arm...it was pretty cool.

What a fun, cozy, quaint little bar! I love Kells! I've been here TONS of times and enjoy myself every time. The employees are nice, there are lots of tables, dim lighting and great food! Last weekend I sampled a vegetarian pasty and a big huge salad and both were fantastic. I could do without the loud, live bands all the time but that's OK, we just leave before they start ;) Tucked away in Post Alley, this bar is sure to be a fave spot for people from all over. Everyone that is here seems to be having such a great time. Irish car bombs for everyone!!!

Went here the other day with some friends. There was a $5 cover, not bad, but we hadnt expected it. Work with me here... LIVE IRISH MUSIC. Yesss....Didnt expect it, and I freakin' loved it. I was surprised how PACKED it was inside. I dont know if thats a normal thing for a Friday night, because the outside was desolate I thought we were going to be the only ones present! Listened to the music for a bit, but my group did want to talk so we went into the quieter dining(ish) side. I was the only one that got food: chowder and chips. It was good and cheap, no complaints there. Our waiter was super nice (though he looked like he was 12...that was kinda odd) and attentive. At around 10 they turned up the music on our side and it became club-like minus the d-bags that frequent Belltown...you know who you are! Had a great time! Thanks Kells!

Went there as a crowd after doing a photstroll in the market one evening. I think the server was overwhelmed with people when we got there, good food and beer, had a great time, but it took FOREVER to get our bill. The night we were there, the performer, was playing sad irish music...we're talking "sad clown" type irish music which was quite a shock to the lively group that we were

Stopped in here with my dad during my annual "visit Seattle when I'm in Washington" trip. I was looking for a late lunch and a beer and found both here after a short wander around downtown. The bar is long and divided into two parts. I never made it to the second side, but from what I could see from the passage way, it looked the same as the side I was in. The low ceiling and dark decor lent a cozy feeling to the inside. Perfect for the drizzly day outside. We were in between lunch and dinner, and therefore between the lunch and dinner menus. They had an "in between" menu, but our waitress told us if we hurried we could order off of the lunch menu and if we waited a short bit we could order off of the dinner menu. I've never had a pastie before and their seafood one sounded great. It is a little turnover filled with seafood and cheese settled on a cheese sauce. I was expecting chunks of seafood, but it was more of a...um...thick paste. Not in a bad way, just wasn't what I was expecting. It was actually very tasty and full of flavor. The perfect in-between-meals small plate.

Stopped in for a quick drink after dinner across the alley at the Pink Door. The bar itself was nothing special but the live entertainment, I could have stayed all night. Just a single middle-aged dude with an acoustic guitar playing great songs.

The last time I dropped by Kells was for a post-launch celebration with some coworkers about a year back, with people ordering (a lot of) beer and dinner entrees. I'm not much of a beer drinker, so I'll refrain from commenting on that. The food here isn't bad - I myself ordered a shepherd's pie, while several coworkers ordered pasties that I ended up sampling. But, while the food is decent, I consider most of their dishes far too overpriced for what they actually are, which is reason enough for me to not want to drop by again anytime soon, especially with all the other options I have nearby.

What a fun spot! I love Irish pubs and this one is a new favorite. Spacious with a little bit room to sit outside, I can now see why I've always seen it packed when walking by Post Alley. There is a lot of seating inside and out! Went here recently for drinks with friends and enjoyed ourselves very much. They have live music some nights, the bartender was super nice, made drinks very well, and the prices were appropriate. I would like to try some of their food though, I hear it's quite tasty! The place was very comfortable to hang out and enjoy a chill evening, chatting, over drinks with friends. We had a nice/fun time there and would definitely come back again!

I've never received such HORRIBLE SERVICE! I stood at the main bar by the front entrance for 20 minutes trying to get a drink and every new person that just showed up was served first even with the bartenders noticing I wanted to place an order. Drinks are overpriced, service was poor, the bathrooms are disgusting and the bartenders are rude. I wouldn't hire the two bartenders from last night in my business even if they would work for free.

Kell's is one of my favorite places to hang out, drink some Guinness, and listen to authentic Irish music. Every night they have an authentic Irish folk band playing in their bar area (usually starting around 9PM). I've never had a bad time staying for the live music. As for the food - there is a resturaunt side to Kells. The food is excellent - and I love their Soda Bread. I also have to recommend their

Irish pub a block away from Pike Place Market. Nice patio allows watching the world go by. We got small plates and drinks. Staff was friendly and attentive. Good choice of irish brews as well as local craft beer on tap. A delightful place to while away a sunny Seattle afternoon.

I have been this place a few times during the day and at night. I was fortunate enough to a couple years ago and experience a live band. It had to have been the best live band playing Irish music I have ever heard. They have a selection of alcoholic beverages concentrating of all things...Irish Whiskey and Irish Beers *Gasp!*. I have had their whiskey on the rocks, Guinness and some of their own Kells blends of brew and they were all about what you would expect or hope for. The place is nestled in a beautiful location near Pike Place Market and has a rustic-Irish feel to place. That is where the good stuff ends and the bad begins; the food was something to be desired. I don't know if it is Irish food in general or the stuff they served but I ordered some vegetable soup and I feel like the stock wasn't very fresh. It tasted a bit bland. Also, the music was ungodly loud. I woke up with a hoarse voice the next day and developed a sore throat a few days later. Knowing what I know, I would still check this place out for a quick beer with some friends for a Sounders game or around St. Patty's before the next in a series.

Came here for lunch our first day in Seattle. It was one of the places recommended by a friend and the thought of Irish pub grub and a pint was mightily appealing. Since the weather was so nice everyone was packed out on the front patio, and the interior was rather deserted. It was dim, cool and quiet, which I kind of appreciated. They have a large menu, with all kinds of Irish favorites. I decided to get a steak and kidney pie, something I'd never tried before! The place seemed pretty authentic (complete with friendly middle-aged lady with a thick Irish brogue) so I wanted to sample this rather hard-to-find pub fare. The waitress asked me if I'd ever had kidneys before and said that even if I liked liver it's not the same. Thanks for the warning, but I was determined! Luckily for me the pie turned out to be very tasty indeed. I thought the kidneys were quite similar to liver, but a slightly different texture. Accompanied by tender beef chunks and topped by a golden-brown flaky trust, I demolished it, much to the surprise and delight of the skeptical waitress. My friend enjoyed her beef pasty very much also. As the menu says, if you can't go to Ireland, come to Kells, and so we have.

I will start this off by saying that the Sister Kells in Portland has set my bar exceptionally high. I really wanted to grab a couple black-n-tan's and just bust a jig out on the floor, but just wasn't feeling it. The band was just ok. This is probly a great place for a beer or two, watching some sports, and hanging out with your frat bros.

Loud depressing music. Super-weak mixed drinks (99% cola apparently)and no Bass Ale on draft. WTF? Waitress was nice at least, but this place was definitely a dud in terms of fun.

  • Sameer S.

This is perhaps the poster child of truly shitty tourist trap experiences - cardboard chicken and over-priced Guinesses. The only reason you'd want to eat there is to get a ring-side view of frat boys and tourists competing for Loudmouth of Post Alley, an age-old tradition that started among the fishermen who would shout out from the foggy docks to see whose voice could be heard out to the farthest islands.

I love the Kell's in Portland - so I had a sneaking suspicion I might like this place too. Post-alley is such an awesome area anyway that you really can't go wrong... especially with outdoor seating during awesome Seattle summer! The drinks and service were great! Though the place was pretty busy at the time (a sunny Sunday afternoon) our server kept us happy and our brews filled. If you're more of a wino, the Tasting Room is right next door!

Not as good as P-Town's. I first went on my 21st birthday to get some drinks and attention. I really am no fan of alcohol, so I was in it more for the attention. Guess what? I WASN'T carded! WHAT!? I looked like a large 16 yeard old and I wasn't carded? It was my 21st birthday, make a big deal! Also their menu that was extremely weak. Pasties only... meh. I came back with a my Japanese language partner a couple years late and it definitely made up for it. I had the Shepherd's pie and loved it as usual. The reason this is 4 stars to Portland's 5, is the atmosphere. The Seattle Kell's just feels like a dark bar. It doesn't have the same comfy and inviting feel of the P-Town Kell's. Still very worth a visit, though.

Kells is a fun place. I've only ever sat at the bar (usually to catch whatever game is on), and I've always had really great service from the bartenders. In fact, the last time I was in there, it was my cousin's birthday and the bartender not only let us eat a cheesecake from the Confectional (yum!), he shared a bite at our urging and gave her a shot. Nice! I've sampled a few things from the menu, and the food is good if the portions are a little small. But that's okay, right, when you're probably filling up on beer or liquor anyway? I think that's okay.

I normally do not enjoy Irish pubs, but Kells was a must after dinner for my friend's birthday....and who am I to say no to the birthday boy? The environment is about the same as most Irish pubs, finding seats were pretty easy. Although I wish this one fat ho bag did not feel the need to take a table for four all to herself when it was damn clear our table next to her had 12 people sitting at a table for 8. Actually some of us had to split up which broke up the group vibe. Anyway I think we came on our servers first day because she was extremely slow at getting drinks and half the time got them wrong. She was however nice, so I'll give her that. Music was some live Irish band, sounds nice, not my thing. EXTREMELY loud. About 30 minutes into the live band...Sorry Dave...I'm out. ~G

We stopped by here because the weather turned bad and we decided a drink would help us cope. It's pretty dark inside, but there are televisions, and plenty of tables and chairs. The bar is pretty solid too. We got some beers and the bartender made me a drink. Prices are reasonable. We may have ordered food, but we weren't given menus, so it never came up. If you're in the area looking to watch a game and get a drink, this could be your place.

This place is, as the young'uns these days would say, "poppin'" on St. Patrick's Day. I don't know what it's like on a regular basis, but this is definitely the place to be I'm guessing on major holidays in which drinking is a big part of the celebration. It's surrounded by great Seattle attractions, and various other restaurants. The drinks are kind of expensive, but they would be at any other nice bar or pub you go to.

We enjoyed this place so much that we went twice in one day while checking out Pike Place Market. It was cold, we were parched and had to go to the bathroom so we jumped into this lovely Irish Pub. My manfriend had been there many times in the past when he visited Seattle but it was my 1st time. I'm usually not that into chains - there is a Kells on Jackson Street in San Francisco which was located right between my work place and my apartment (it was only a 15 minute walk to work too!). Good memories there but even better times in Seattle. Our bartender was great, from Belfast, love his accent. I had an Irish Coffee (only because I was freezing) and it was the best I'd ever had and my significant other a Snakebite with a shot of Tequila on the side. Oh the Snakebite was lovely...I want some now! We went back a few hours later, again to use the restroom and to regroup for our upcoming Izakaya hopping mission. I had a house Chard (why not) and he had a Cider... it was Happy Hour (cheap!) and we got a Sausage Roll ($3). I heart sausage so I ordered it. Pretty tasty, like the phyllo dough crust a lot, the ground bangers and mash were just heh so I ate all of the outside shell.

Kells is your typical casual pub serving up all the fare and flare associated with st. patty's day even when it's not st. patty's day. It's a nice place to grab a beer or catch a soccer game in the day, but at night this place gets packed. It's a pub not a club, but yet they charge cover on the weekends. They charge a ridiculous $20 for st. patty's day, but I guess that is to be expected. The bar is divided into two sides--one has an irish band and area to dance, and the other blasts up pop music so loudly that you have to yell to order a drink.

Full disclosure: I came here on a pub crawl as the de facto DD since my stomach was a bit off and thus declined to drink and the crawl was funded by a companion's corporate expense budget (not my company's - hello Microsoft corporate overlords!) I'd walked by this place in Post Alley a few times, on the way to the Pink Door or walking back to my car while parking at the awesome free non-parallel parking spaces next to Pike's Place when it's closed, and I got the impression that this was a grown up version of a frat brother favorite from the looks of the people smoking outside. This was really not the case once we got inside. It was pretty much packed, but surprisingly did not feel cramped. The cover band was playing "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" which even I can get into while sober which helped me stand out less from my balance-impaired compatriots. Given how busy it was, getting the bartender's attention was a relatively easy affair. This may not be everyone's scene, and I'd question the authenticity since we weren't harassed by any drunks or pugilists, but it didn't feel like a meat market and it seemed like everyone was having fun, which is a lot more than I can say for many bars of similar occupancy downtown.

I have NEVER had this much fun at an Irish bar. I usually find them to be really hokey, so when my group decided to go here after dinner I was a little bummed. This was my first and only visit, but I had a blast listening to the live Irish band and even the set break music was great! Super packed with normal people (not hippies), good time havin folks, and a diverse age group. Awesome beer selection and we found a table for ourselves which made it seem a little less hectic. I had a blast here and the taxi ride back to our hotel was well worth the fun I had drinking and swaying back and forth to Irish music.

I found Kells while walking through Post Alley looking for a different restaurant. They have prominent signage and a patio, so if you're walking through Post Alley, you'll find them pretty easily. I'd just about given up on dinner (turns out everything's closed on a Sunday night downtown...), so I stopped in for a beer and to rest my feet a bit. The bar was not to crowded, mostly regulars hanging out watching soccer, the patio was full of happy regulars as well. The rest of the place was big and dark and slightly imposing if you're on your own, probably awesome for a group. The bartender saw my out of state license and struck up a conversation, which was nice. Some silly "kids" from the 'burbs stopped in for a moment demanding free drinks for the birthday girl and quickly found their way out after a round of NOT FREE drinks. Geez kids, very charming. Seems like there might be a little of that here sometimes, but would be pretty easy to avoid. I was having so much fun hanging out there that I ended up eating dinner and staying for a while. I kept waiting for it to get dark, but it kept not getting dark, so I kept not leaving. That whole staying light out til after 10pm is pretty weird for this Southerner! Anyhoo, the smoked salmon salad was very tasty (even if it's not Irish). I wish I could have tried a Pasty, those meat pies sound really yummy! Those seemed pretty cheap, but the rest of the menu wasn't inexpensive. If I end up in the area again, I'd stop in for a pint!

I used to really like Kell's. Fun atmosphere, decent live music and service. Tonight the music was meh and there was no place to go to escape it. We were trying to have some conversation and moved seats a couple times but couldn't find anywhere that worked. Often in bars there's a quieter spot towards the back where the music is still loud but not deafening, not here. After the restaurant side closed there was no escaping the noise. I didn't remember Kell's food prices being so high from previous visits. They do have pretty good fare but $20+ for bar food is a bit steep in my book. We finally moved next door to Post and had great food at reasonable prices. If you're looking to go out for rowdy fun, Kells is still a good option when the bands are good. For conversation, food, and drinks try Post instead.

Seattle is a great foodie town, in my opinion. It is very easy to pick a place at random and find something fantastic. And then there's Kell's. On a not terribly busy night, I ordered a steak tip and liver pie, while my girlfriend ordered something that she apologetically sent back as being too heavily herbed for her palate. I'll add that she order what she considered the standard test for gauging an Irish restaurant, the shepherd's pie. I'd say the highlight of my entree was that it was warm. I realize when assembling a stew flavors and colors will combine, but this was just gray and lacking seasoning. No one likes to send back to dishes, or at least they shouldn't, and we tried to explain such. Twenty five minutes later her new dish arrived and our server made scarce. When we finally got the bill, she again disappeared. After about twenty minutes, we walked into the bar area requesting some one and/or any one process our bill so we could leave. My gf actually posted on Facebook throughout this meal that some one should come rescue her since the waitress wouldn't let us leave. Upon noticing we had stepped inside, our server popped out of hiding to comment how cold it had gotten as the sun went down. I am a firm believer in basic hospitality. I will save the lecture for a blog entry, but that last snide act ensured we wouldn't be back any time soon. Bad service teetering on willful mixed with mediocre food does not earn my hard earned money. If you are still looking for a good Irish bar, check out Fado on First Avenue

One of my friends told me that you go to Kells when you really want to drink and he was right. Our group of eight arrived before 9pm on Black Friday to avoid the cover charge. We were able to find a couple tables to push together right up front next to the stage. The place starting filling up fast after that and eventually had a line outside to get in. The service was excellent and our glasses never went empty. Even though we were right in front of the stage when the band started playing, we were still able to hold conversations. The atmosphere was great with live music, but laid back and not intrusive.

Tucked amongst the numerous shops, cafes, bars and restaurants is an authentic Irish pub. Welcome to Kells! If you don't want to hug the hostess with the thick Irish accent then you need to make sure you're heart is beating. And whether you cozy up to the bar or find a cubbyhole to wedge into you will feel at home in this touristy neighborhood pub. With a large list of authentic food and ales, Kells will have what you need to warm you up or get you tipsy. The corned-beef sandwich and soup will satisfy your appetite. Don't expect to take away because you'll finish the perfect proportions of food. They're not here to waste time or food. Lunch is quick. With that: 4 stars for the staff 4 stars for the food 5 stars for the prices (a drink, sandwich and soup for under $12)

My son Julian brings me here for a lot of his political fundraising events that he helps his friends with. I had a good time when Dow Constantine had a meet the people event here. Dow and Julian went to school together at UW. I don't drink alcohol but they had some nice iced tea I enjoyed. When my son Michael comes to visit from Sacramento we always go to Pikes Place Market. After a lot of walking which gets me really tired this is a nice place to come to take a break. I really like Kells for these reasons.

I ordered the baked salmon, a pricy $26.00 treat to find that I get this sliver of a salmon, over cooked and bland. Not to mention the poor service, the waitresses race from the kitchen to the front passing my table each time, ignoring the still empty glasses of sodas in the middle of the table. Then to be distracted by the loud outraged waitress yelling on the phone. All to be topped off with a 30 minute wait for my check. None the less, I will not be back

County down chicken with apple, tomato, mushroom and bacon sauce. Delicious! I love Kells. Every time I come here: great atmosphere, excellent service, and you'll become addicted to the sausage roll with gravy appetizer the first time you try it. Our server was very very attentive and courteous, make us feel like we were her only customers despite a full house. A favorite place of mine, great place to bring your out-of-towner friends to. Super casual. And you can park your scooter in the alley! ;) And Post Aly is a great spot for an after-dinner stroll after all the tourists have cleared out. Very scenic and romantic. Intimate old-world feel!

NOTE: This is a review of my recent general bar experience at Kells. For a proper early start of St. Patty's celebration, a small group of us strolled into Kells for some Irish Car Bombs this weekend. About 5 years ago, this place was awesome for getting drinks with your friends and just hanging out, and then there was last Friday. The bar was playing very loud top 40 hip hop, and was packed with young college kids...Although, we got plenty of entertainment in the form of drunken bump-and-grind variations...it just did not feel right. Felt like the bar lost it's soul to the latest trend. Bar tenders were still cool, I will have to check in here again on a different night in hopes of reviving my Kells experience of years past.

My friend and I came back. It had been a year since our last trip to the States, and we often talk about our "Kells potato farl" experience. Seriously, we tell tales about it. The potato farl was still excellent, though our 'dining experience' a little less so. We found the perfect table, and were enjoying the view....until we were asked to move to make room for a reservation. And then there was only 2 potato farls left (thus creating a moral dilemma amongst 3 friends). So we ordered a quesadilla that was just OK, but no potato farl. So, potato farl, I give you 5 stars. But Kells, I only give you 3 (I suppose technically that averages out to a 4 but I'm sticking to it).

I really enjoyed Kells on a recent business trip to Seattle. The pasties and sausage roll were the perfect snacks after a Guinness and IPA. I heard it was an old funeral parlor at one time, which added to the ambiance. I suspect I'll be returning on future Seattle trips, especially since it is centrally located near the sites and conveniently right near the Marriott on the water.

Not impressed. Over ratted. Pubs are meant to be warm and inviting...home away from home if you will. The waitresses really didn't seem to care if we were there or not. One girl came to our table took my wifes drink order (coffee) and walked away, never asking my sons or I if we wanted a drink. Another girl eventually took our order. If it wasn't for the delicious meal (which was very small & expensive) this establishment would have gotten zero stars.

Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub is a relaxing atmosphere with friendly staff. They have a great lunch menu with an array of patsies. Patsies are savory stuffed pastries. I thought patsies were a British speciality, but apparently it's Irish too! Kells served it up quite epicure with Irish soda bread and split pea soup. The patsies are for those that want to enjoy beer with lunch or have a small appetite. Sumptuous and impressive.

I was quite confused, and utterly amused. One room had t-shirt and jeans required, and the other room required button up facconable shirts with pleated khaki's? ohhhhh and noted that I may have been the only asian, I mean minority in that place. I must admit that it was quite amusing that I did enjoy the questions that included,"Did your friend bring you here?" and,"are you old enough to be here?" and the best one of all,"so you're telling me you like celtic music, and that's why you're here?" I cannot tell you how welcomed I felt in this place, and will be coming here again.. -- sarcasm --- I don't know, maybe I expected it to be a bit different, and much more fun, without a million questions of why I shouldn't have been there....and maybe it's because we are in seattle, "diversity city" but I guess I am wrong..... btw, this was in both rooms... Dear kells, I am sorry you will be missing my sweet asian ass there, but I don't think you'll be missing me that much. love, Nina the asian girl that drank the black and tan :)

I am torn. My head wants to give it 2 stars but my heart says 3. Or maybe my heart says 2 and my head says 3. At any rate, I really HAVE experienced better but I wind up here fairly consistently when I'm roving between bars in the neighborhood so really, it must be A-OK. They don't have pitchers, pints are overpriced and the food is "meh" at distinctly higher than "meh" prices. However, I dropped my phone here one time and didn't notice and the bartender had it for me when I came back an hour later and wasn't a jerk about it. The outside tables are fun for people watching on summer nights and while I think that Kells is trying too hard to be "authetic", I do enjoy the live music because really - who doesn't like a fiddle?

Find this awesome Irish Pub in Post Alley next to the Tasting Room (where you can try some excellent wine flights). The atmosphere, location and ambience make this place an amazing place but the fact that the sell Carlsberg beer here is what excites me most. I don't know of any place else in the city that has Carlsberg! Oh, and they serve pasties!

Not bad for an Irish joint! I liked that the one side had traditional music, and the other side had a bit of hip hop playing... being a Saturday nite and all! Drinks were good, service was so - so. It seemed like there was a lot of older gentleman aka sugar daddy's here, man cuz I saw a few w/young females all over them.. WT?! I wasn't concerned since I was w/group of beauties myself but I am just making an observation! Grey hair was in for sure.. if ya didn't have none you wasn't getting none!

Food here is just ok. It is a little over priced but it is still a cool place to go for some chow. But for a night on the town this place is VERY fun! Highly energetic Irish music and dancing lighten up the place, which used to be Seattle's very first mortuary! For those of you who are die hard ghost hunters or the curious you should come down and check out what is rumored to be one of the most haunted places in Seattle! Overall, great place! No Irish pub in the Greater Seattle Area beats it!

Came here with a bunch of my co-workers to celebrate a birthday. It looks a bit small from the outside, but once you walk in, there is a ton of space with 3 bars and plenty room to sit or stand. The drinks (during happy hour) are reasonably priced and the food wasn't too bad either. The service in the beginning could have used some work. We came in as bigger group, but wasn't greeted too warmly by the waitress. (The service did redeem itself when it switched over to an Asian lady, she was great!) Overall, it's a pretty nice Irish bar with good drinks, relatively cheap food, and good atmosphere.

The drinks are good and not pricey but don't be in a rush for your second or third round unless you walk up to the bar. Our server was eating dinner at the booth next to us while we waited with empty glasses. I totally expect this from dive bars and/or if it is really busy but there was one other table. Maybe because it is a popular spot in the post alley the server figured she didn't need to work at a tip or something. I still take out of towners there but I don't bother to go as a usual spot for myself with local friends.

Mark L. is 100% correct in that the portions are TINY. That's what warrants the 4/5 stars, not 1/5. I have been to Kells two nights in a row as a tourist visiting to get an idea of the locals. This place is hoppin! The front bar is calm but a bit loud later in the evening and a good place for flirting, getting hit on, or even a date with drinks. The back bar is nuts: very very loud irish-esque music and full of drunks "dancing." Awesome spot for people-watching. I've been served by the same bartender, Brendan, both nights and he seems like a pretty cool guy. He delivered prompt and courteous service consistently. The other bartenders appeared to be as prompt with others. Food is good (I had a pasty) but again it is small-portioned. The random girls I met there both nights had various other items that were also small but good.

Had a very pleasant lunch here this afternoon. Our server was great, the food was simple, hearty and clean. The bartender had two extremely important skills down - (1) ability to make a quality bloody mary; and (2) ability to pour a quality Guinness (which of course should be required of all bartenders at Irish bars). I had the shepard's pie which was well seasoned and had yummy, crispy mashed potato topping. My bf had a stew with lamb - the lamb was wonderfully tender. All in all, the whole experience was an unexpected, nice surprise.

Good music, really sweet bartender, but terrible food. And the house wine is dreck (yes, I could have presumed this before entering, but still). The mussels were really bad, even by pub standards...

Kells has Mannys and good beef and vegetable pasty treats. I'll never complain if anyone I'm with wants to hang out there before 9pm, when suddenly there's a cover charge and the music turns up to 11 and it becomes a club. As a club it just isn't my scene.

Pasties, soup and a Guinness? That's what I call a meal. Well, I didn't plan thoroughly my meals in reference to time and I ended up being full still when dinner time hit. We wondered about Pike's Place and walked by this cozy little Irish pub and decided to humour our Irish compatriot and chow and chug there. I ordered the Corned Beef Pasty because if i'm not that hungry, I want to at least my "badness" in food if it's a smaller portion. It had diced up corned beef, shredded cabbage, and swiss cheese inside. The accompanying sauce was a stone ground mustard sauce. Each pasty came with complementary soup of the day. I got vegetable. My friend got the Steak and kidney pie pasty and it looked tasty too. He did the eye roll and didn't offer to share. Selfish bugger. The irish got the chicken pasty which had chicken and mushroom with a tarragon sauce. Friendly environment. Our waitress was lovely and delightful. Not a bad laid back spot.

Can we say boring? Came here on a Monday night around 7. Brought some people with me that had never been to Seattle or Kells. Thought it would be as great as the one in Portland. Felt more like a morgue...dark, eerie, and empty. Took a look at the menu for a few and ended up leaving to Pikes Brewing.

I've been here a few times now and it's usually a plesant experience. Nearly every time I've been in there was a band or some sort of live music which has always been entertaining if you're able to get a seat. It can get very crowded on a weekend evening. My only somewhat negative experience was trying to meet some friends there for dinner (seperate dining/entertainment area) and we were charged a cover for a band that we didn't see. The waitress did confirm that we should not have been charged and took it out of the check, however when another friend came to join (and told the 'bouncer' it was for dinner only) she was still charged. The food is decent, but next time I'll only come for the entertainment and a few brews.

Okay, well it may not have the most beautiful outdoor seating: a number of plastic chairs and tables in a back alley half a block from Pike Place. It's still a nice respite from the throngs of people making their way through the market on any given day. Great place to stop for a Guinness or three, friendly waitresses, and a nice vibe.

I stopped in here for happy hour on my way to the bus and lets just say I wish I would have kept walking! I sat down at a very wobbly table with an umbrella that was precariously balanced above me. The server came by and this was our painfully strained conversation; me: "Are you still in HH", him: "yes" and he listed the drink deals including $5 HH wine. me: "is the HH wine was a cabernet?" him: "yes our white is cabernet" me: "oh no I meant a red cab" (there is no other kind.....) him: "ok I will grab you a red wine if our white isn't a cabernet" and he walked away!! Gah! He was gone for about 5 minutes and another server came by to see if I was being helped. I asked her what the HH wine was and she listed a chardonnay and a merlot so I asked for a wine list, which the 1st server brought by 5 minutes later. Eventually I did order a wine (a cab), but Im pretty sure it was not what I asked for or paid for :( Wine issues aside; He acted annoyed when I asked what food was on the HH menu and said something like "well there is a menu inside but its basically just fries, salad, a baked potato....." God forbid I ask to see the HH menu!! Finally I just gave in and ordered a baked potato, it wasn't good. Overall; The food was blah and the service was terrible!

We had just finished dinner at The Pink Door, and were killing time until the Burlesque show started. Kells seemed like a good place to land for a bit and down some drinks. The band playing sucked...come on guys, you can do better than that! The service was just alright, nothing spectacular. This Kells does not even compare to Portland Kells, not even close, not at all! Portland's is more classier, more entertaining, and overall fun! Sorry seatown...but I won't be back to your Kells

My boyfriend and I met some friends here on Saturday night. I hadn't been to Kells since probably 2007, but I'd always enjoyed it and was glad to go back. We arrived around 8 or so and it was fairly quiet. It wasn't exactly empty, but not packed, either. We were happy to get a table before it became standing-room only, and we sat back and enjoyed our beers. At some point, one of us remarked that there was no live music yet and how odd that was. Not long after, the band started walking in and setting up. We were kind of excited about it... until they started playing and were WAY louder than was necessary. Maybe I'm picky, but if I'm going to a bar, it's because I want to drink - and ideally chat - with friends. If I want loud music, I'll go to a concert venue for an actual show. I enjoyed the music itself, but it was so loud we had to scream to talk, so around 10 or 10:30 we gave up and left to find someplace quieter. Kells is still as lively as I remember, and the service was good and quick (although our server had a strange habit of popping up behind us rather than just showing up at the side of our table like normal). I'd probably sooner come back to Kells on a non-music night, if they have them, or at least not plan on doing a lot of catching up if there's music... but otherwise, it's a good solid Irish bar.

Great Irish bar with good food and a good selection of beers. The food choices go really traditional Irish/English with everything from Bangers and Mash to beans on toast, corned beef and cabbage to assorted Pasties. If you're looking for a good place to start an evening of boozing this is a great spot to hit. Kept fairly dark and the sound just bounces around the walls so it gets a little loud. Not the place to go to if you're looking to have a lot of conversation, but the food and beer is great. Erin go bragh!

What's not to love about this place! I am not a big fan of coming into downtown, but when I do, this place is it! Love how it's off the alley, not the main street. I love Guinness, so that should tell you something too! Love the live bands they have, even when they aren't the best, it's still a great time. Getting a table can be a challenge sometimes, but hey, its busy! We got lucky Sat night, walked in and just then the front table opened up- had to race for it though, kinda like Steve Martin and Kevin Bacon going for the cab in Planes, Trains & Automobiles.....but we won! sweet! The service has always been good - you just have to be a wee bit patient when it's slammed. Drink up!!

So I haven't been to Kell's since.... well let's just say it's been a long while:) This visit was eventful, with quite a LARGE, FUN group!!! The aura when we arrived was pretty mellow, but I knew I was in for a treat. Our waitress started off pretty decent but I think she was taking shots as well during the night, because each time she came around she was became more dazed and confused, so to say..... We decided to order some food since we knew we were in for some serious drinking and we ordered a couple dishes which were pretty good. My fav was the potato farl, YUM, YUM!!! The cover band finally came out and here came the entertainment for the night, oh boy, oh boy!!! and let's just say our table was part of it:) If it wasn't for the group of friends that came out, I would have gave this place only 2 stars:( The waitress just failed in the end, she was so wasted that after I gave her our receipt and we were ready to leave she proceeded to tell me she didn't get the signed copy?!??! ummm, yeah, i gave it to you, with your tacked on gratuity for horrible service, so NO, don't reprint me another one. Funny because I saw the reviews and alot of other people had the same issue... All in all, this place serves pretty decent food but beware of the service and oh the drinks are pretty pricey, I was quite surprised at our bill at the end of the night, and surprised in a bad way. Don't see myself visiting again, unless it's happy hour.

Whenever I go to Kells I have mixed emotions. I love the bands that they have playing on the weekends. I like the location on the edge of the Pike Place Market. I even don't mind the crowd; it's entertaining to watch drunken frat boys trying to dance a jig. But what I don't care for are the overpriced drinks and rude bouncers; stop calling your friend on your walkie talkie and pointing out this person's hair or how that person is dressed. A note to the bartender - don't serve drinks that your bouncers are going to snatch away a minute later. Try to follow your own last call, ok??

I don't even want to give this place 1 star, but it's the only option! TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE SERVICE! We were tourists who had just strolled through Pike Place and wanted a drink and decided to check out the Irish Bar, because who doesn't like an Irish bar?! Well this girl certainly doesn't like this particular Irish bar and will tell all travelers I know to NEVER...EVER go there (and trust me - working on an oil field with folks who travel from all over the United States - I can spread the word quickly). The bartender on Friday 10/31 was so rude that we actually got up and left because of the way he talked to us. This was before we even had the chance to order a drink. I decided within a few minutes that I would not be giving this place ANY of my money. We happened to have sandwiches in our hand (which were almost finished - again because we had just been strolling through Pike Place and happened upon the bar and decided on a drink and not to mention it was pissing rain outside). The bartender wouldn't let it go that we had food (even though we sat at the bar for a DRINK - maybe even quite a few). I can guarantee the crowd I was with that weekend would have been back again, if not only once, but several times to spend money, but I never will give them a dime... in ANY city and neither will my friends. Suggestion - start with getting a new bartender OR give him a reminder that your bar is situated in the middle of the biggest tourist trap in the city, that sells any kind of food you can imagine and that if someone wants to spend money at your bar (even if just on drinkS) that you should take their patronage and not be rude to them. Good luck!!

Great clam chowder and the chicken pasties was terrific ! nice that there are two sides. One is louder and more of a pub, the other had linen table clothes . Very inviting great service and the food was excellent ! What's not to like when there is slow pour guiness in the house

Waitress was absolutely rude and condescending. Curt and abrupt. Looking exasperated at times when coming to ask if we needed anything else. Disappeared for a long time - so when I wished to order food, I couldn't so I just chose not to eat. She also never brought the cheque and we had to ask for it ourselves! Most absurd of all? Someone in our party overheard her talking about someone in our group to another wait staff! If not for the waitress though, I would give this place 4 stars. The food I have had here (on days I was able to eat here) was always good. Clean, and management is friendly.

I am incredibly disappointed with this place. They have an awesome location and excellent food, but they also have the worst service I've ever experienced. I've been there on three separate occasions and each time I hope that their service will get better, but it just doesn't. The first time I went to Kells our server did not know anything about the menu: was there bacon in the clam chowder? Do the serve pitchers? What kind of oysters do they serve? This would be ok, but she would leave to go find out the answer and would only come back when we waved her over, having completely forgotten that we ever had a question for her. Once we finally ordered, she forget to actually bring us some of our food. The second time I went it took over an hour for our waiter to come tak our order (and no, it was not busy). When our waiter finally did come to our table she was very rude. The third time I was at Kells was for their bar, and that service was actually fine, but considering they are a restaurant as well as a pub, they should really work on that. I'll give it another try because I love their clam chowder, but fingers crossed they hire some new waitstaff.

This was one of the friendliest restaurants I visited while in Seattle. I visited twice - the first time for lunch, as my husband saw sausage rolls on the menu and wanted a taste of home. I don't usually care for pork, but I had a bite of that and it was really good. I ordered the vegetable pasty and the clam chowder and both were solid. For me, a clam chowder is ruined by having rubbery clams or too much pepper, and this one was just right. The soda bread was really nice, too. The waiter was really pleasant, and was happy to chat to us for a minute and make some suggestions for things to see in town that aren't in the guide books. We weren't treated like annoying tourists or like unwelcome riffraff, which was a big part of why we ended up going back there for dinner our last night in town. After a week of heavy (but delicious, mostly) food and mixed service, a simple bowl of soup in a friendly atmosphere was just what we needed.

A little Ireland snuggled into Pike Place Ambience: 4 Food: 4 Value: 4 Walking down the narrow passage of Post Alley by the eclectic shops that precedes Kells puts you into an Ireland state of mind. I really like the old world feel of enclosed streets and shops, something not common in America. Kells fits right in. The look and feel of this place is just very comfortable, maybe it's the swat ceilings that focuses you mind... The selection of beers on tap is very European, uncommon things like Hoegaarden, to a couple of Irish beers that I've never heard of. The happy hour food was very tasty. I have forgotten what is was called, but it was meat rolled in some sort of corn meal dough. Yum.

This is definitely the "regulars" and "anything" all-inclusive Irish Bar. Came here with a small group of girls when a live band was playing and it was a combination of stag parties, sports teams having beers, tourists, club kids pre-drinking, people starting their night there, people ending their night there. It really was a free for all. Friendly people, but generally a mediocre atmosphere. Come here if you REALLY can't find anywhere else to go.

This review will be brief as my experience wasn't memorable one way or the other. Kells is pretty much a Seattle standard, as in, if you live here, you've been to Kells once for sure. Nothing remarkable about the space, staff or drinks; just average all the way around. I didn't eat during this visit, as we just stopped in for a very quick beverage before heading off to dinner. I have a feeling I'll be back again, though I have no idea when. However, Kells doesn't rate as a destination drinking spot for me.

Most restaurants that have "pub" to their name are places that specialize in hamburgers, hot wings and the obligatory salads. With Kells it seems like they actually live up to their name as actually being a pub. Nearly all of the food here is Irish inspired dishes. I don't know if what we had was "just like Ireland" since I have never been there but it seemed authentic enough and was took a literal meaning to the name. Steve and I split a large bowl of their Clam Chowder which was very good. For our main course I had a Shepard's Pie which was delightful and Steve had a kind of stew which also was wonderful. We had a wonderful, decadent whiskey cake to share as well. Of course you are not getting the full pub experience if you don't have a beer and so we got some of the Kells brand of beer. Here is where something potentially problematic could have arose with the service but wound up being a "fortunate mistake". They didn't have everything on tap that was listed on their menu but I was congenial and was working to work with them. It happens sometimes. I settled on the Kells' IPA but was brought their Red. The waitress realized she made a mistake only after I had some beer but it was not an issue because their Red Ale was very, very good. The only thing that was seriously problematic was the music they were playing. I have zero problem with Irish music but I do have a problem when the same song of any origin keeps getting played repeatedly. I think I heard two different songs throughout the entire meal and that was very grating. Other customers were complaining about it too and so that is the only matter I can see by coming here that would need improvement.

My boyfriend heard of this place because of Ghost Hunters and while vacationing in Seattle we decided to check it out. The owner is really friendly. I had the clam chowder, which was a little thinner than I typically like, but the flavor was great. My boyfriend said the pasties were good, and my cousin said the the crab salad was good too.

We popped in here for happy hour before our reservation at the pink door. I can't comment on the food, but the whiskey & scotch selections were vast. And the environment is Ireland-esc. Dark and feels welcoming. Several beers on tap though many were British and Irish

When visiting Seattle, I usually end up at Pike Place to visit family. A tradition is to go to Kells (located in Post Alley, right next to Pikes) and have a nice pint of Guinness, or Kilkenny. Kilkenny is hard to find, so a few years ago when finding out that Kells had it, I was sold. Unfortunately, this trip to Kells would not produce Kilkenny, as the waitress said they have not had it since last year. The reason being, is there is a strike at the docks, and the workers refuse to unload the kegs. Sucks for me, but I ordered and enjoyed some Guinness. I usually come here just for a drink or two. I tried a few of the food items in the past, and they were only so-so. Then again, this is an Irish pub, not a restaurant, so it was up to par for pub food. I will still come here for drinks though, and grab dinner somewhere else. The pub itself has a great traditional atmosphere. They have a TV and always have a football (soccer) game on, which I appreciate. I will be back to Kells again, and hopefully by then the strike will be over and the Kilkenny will pour!

Absolutely loved this place and experiencing it with locals...priceless. They truly seemed like a family there. Well, I can't comment on the food, because I never got service. Hubby, baby, and I came in at 6:10 on Monday evening. The hostess was a little to busy flirting to notice us. The boy she was snuggling with pointed us out to her. She turned and said... "Sit anywhere you like" we choose a seat on their patio.... Then waited.... 5 minutes.... No sign on server, waters or menus.... 10 minutes... Nothing..... Now it's 6:26, and we are leaving.... Unsatisfied, unhappy, and still hungry..... Fail! Don't waste your time if they won't waste there's

Went to Kells last night and I really appreciated that there was a place that had live entertainment daily! The performer, Liam has been performing at Kells since they opened some 30 years ago! The guy is fun and performs very well with an Irish flare. He has some originals as the CD's are available and enjoys taking requests from the audience to sing. The service is prompt and with a smile. I have not eaten at this establishment thus far so I will need to review the rest of what the place can offer at another time. The bar atmosphere is open and on the dark side which is the them I enjoy in a tavern like setting. The amount of whiskeys they have are very impressive and their wall of liquor is lined with them to see. They also have the proper amount of other standard liquors and flavored vodkas to make any visitor happy. Thanks for the great entertainment, service, and Irish experience!

Been here a few times before on previous trips. This time we found the service to be absolutely dismal; we ordered directly from the bar. They were either really short of servers, or really disorganized. Enjoyed the band that played - very lively, entertaining group. They got the crowd up and dancing!

Went here on a Saturday night to have a few beers and listen to some live Irish Music. The atmosphere of the band and the people really made you feel like you were in Ireland. SERVICE. The service here is abysmal. The several waiters on the floor, including the ones who would visit the cash register located directly next to us, would go out of their way to avoid our table. Heck, even the woman who was supposed to be our server avoided us. Not pointing fingers, but it felt more race related than anything, as the bulk of the clientele was race A, whereas our table was race B. ENVIRONMENT. Dingy, dark, and more of a good-old-boys watering hole than a real destination. Definitely not returning.

I don't get it. This bar is terrible! Every single time I go here I am terribly disappointed. When my friend and I went up to the bar to ask if the bartender would change the music to something a little more upbeat the guy told us that several people had already put in requests via showing the bartender a little extra something something (his words not mine) the bartender also kept hugging and kissing on people instead of making our drinks as we stood there waiting. The drinks we ordered, vodka sodas and whiskey sours were not even drinkable they were so badly made not to mention over priced. The women's bathroom is also terrible and WAY too small women. If you want to go to a fun pub I would suggest going elsewhere there are so many fun places at pikes place that have a lot more going on for them and offer better drinks and service, they even change the music without asking for bribery;)

It was okay. I had heard good things but the place was kinda dark and musty with just a few patrons scattered around. Décor is eclectic, you can look for hours and still find new objects on the walls to stare at. Beer was cold, glass was clean. I had the pasty which was very small (not even an appy for a guy). Crust was puffy and flavor was excellent. The clam chowder was a bit on the creamy side. But tasty as well. Service was quiet but adequate. But the beer was cold. Isn't that why you come here?

Traditional Irish restaurant / bar. The food was basic but good. I had one of the specials, white fish with roasted potatoes and vegetables. The soda bread was good and the food was okay. The atmosphere and decor was that of a typical Irish pub. The staff was friendly and attentive.

Great food, good beer, and probably my best dining experience because of the incredible staff. Ethna, tge propertier, is a wonderful lady. She was very friendly, and my wife and I had a great time talking to her. Karen, her daughter, gave both my boys soccor player dolls. Never experienced anything like that before. Our server was knowledgeable and very attentive. Food was fresh, flavorful, and great quality.

Our adventure at kels began earlier than our reservation in which the host did a great job finding us a table. I ordered the kels lager mistake just go for one of the many scotches on the menu instead. We than ordered pastys which were surprisingly good. The downfall of this whole trip like many was the service our waitress disappeared in the not so busy restaurant as our beers and waters ran dry. Never once asked us if we wanted another round or more waters. There was also a mistake on one of the checks not a huge deal but the attitude of the waitress made it seem to be a daunting task to fix it. She then came back with all our checks and a pen and just placed them in the middle of the table. All and all I was not impressed with kels but maybe another shot later on at a different hour.

Always a fun spot and exactly what you expect from an Irish pub. The place is popping on a Friday or Saturday and the music is good. I've only seen Irish style folk bands here, they usually entertain the crown pretty well. Things aren't so loud that you can't talk and the prices are right. Whereas most pubs you might find difficulty getting served, there are servers here ready to take care of you so you don't have to walk up to the bar. People come and go at a good clip, so if you don't find a space right away, it won't take long.

Always a fun location late night for a raucous crowd of Irish lovers. The live music is loud, really loud, but it has to be to overcome the large crowd that is highly likely to be in violation of the fire code. Each impromptu drop in has made for great people watching whether it be the elderly single chap who wants to dance with every woman in the place or the sudden arrival of a toga party. Great location on Post Alley.

I have a few problems with Kells. 1. No fish and chips. That's a staple at every Irish pub I've ever been to, here and in Ireland. And also, you're a block away from an amazing seafood mecca/market, why would you miss out on that? 2. Clam chowder tasted like Progresso .. you know, the canned stuff. See my above note about relative location to seafood market. Other than that, the rest of their food was quite good and the service was excellent. Cool place to grab a pint and listen to some live music that they have every night.

SERVICE: Rude and horrible The bartender is rude and thinks hes "too cool for school". After going through some of the reviews (please check out "not recommended reviews, where most of the negative reviews are), turns out this is not abnormal behavior for this bar. So STAY AWAY!!!! I hope this place gets shut down. My boyfriend tried ordering a chilled vodka shot for me and my girlfriends and the bartender said "are you serious? Why do you want it chilled?" And then blatantly walked away. Then when my boyfriend asked him a SECOND time he was like "who drinks vodka chilled?? It takes away from its taste. It's a girlie drink" Seriously, if that's what we want to drink, that's what we want to drink. Who are you to judge?? My boyfriend responds after paying for the bill and said "I didn't realize I came to a bar to get judged." The bartender screamed at him and threw out our drinks and then kicked my boyfriend out. AVOID this place AT ALL COSTS

I usually come here for happy hour if I am in the Pike Place area. They have your typical Irish beers on tap (can't go wrong with a Kilkenny!). I like sitting outside and people watching on a nice day. We had a couple appetizers as well. Tried the brie and fruit which was pretty good, really enjoyed the brie, came with different fruit than what is usually paired with brie. Kiwis and oranges and some others, maybe adding some apples would be better. Also had one of the pasties. We tried the corned beef which was pretty yummy. Always worth a stop by for happy hour and a good Irish beer.

Went in on a Saturday afternoon and it was fairly empty. The food was ok at best, and the beer was all lukewarm. The real kicker was the server getting visibly annoyed when our group of five asked him to split the check three ways.

My rating of Kells is purely as a late night drinking spot as I have never eaten here. Kells is a great destination if you are looking for a crowded, loud, and sometimes rambunctious watering hole with live music. The bar is pretty big, especially considering its location on quaint Post Alley, so it can easily accommodate large parties. Another nice aspect is that the Kells occupies two spaces, each with their own bar. One side is bigger and louder with live music, the other is quieter so you can more easily converse with friends without having to yell. The bar is always filled with an eclectic variety of young partiers, older locals, and, as of my last visit, a new breed of hipster-bros whose enthusiastic beer-induced dancing was a sight to be seen. Many of the bad reviews here are emotionally fueled judgmental rants about the terrible table service, dark/loud environment, and other patrons' clothing. What a joke. You don't go to Kells for thoughtful conversation and attentive service. You go for the cold fresh beer and good times with friends.

The owner sat us and took the time to get to know who we were and where we were from, we shared stories and laughs. The service was the best part of Seattle and after our disappointing experience at cutters (don't go there see my cutters review) Kells with out even knowing what went down took their time to make our experience there some thing to be remembered. The food was made better by the service we received and if (this is a hard if) we were to ever return to Seattle, this would be one of my first stops.. Thank you Kells for being you.

I came here with friends after Macy's Tree Lighting. It's just by The Pike's Market Place. Therefore, we decided to walk over. It's actually very close. We arrived there and were thinking about sitting by the bar. But, we realized there's another room where we can all fit. The staff was helping us with food and drinks immediately. It was quick and no hassle. I had a beer and corn beef pastry. I pretty much enjoyed those. Apparently, the pastry dish was most of my friends ordered. A couple of my friends also had pie dish. It looked yummy too. I'd love to come back and try other food on the menu.

I had a blind date here once. Let me tell you. It was tragic kingdom. Not the place. The date. This was back before social media/dating sites so it was the true "I know this great guy! You'd SO hit it off!" situation... ... Anyways, Kells was always a necessary stop during my drinking St. Paddy's days. It's definitely got the jolly thing going on when full of people. I had never eaten here before so when we stopped in for lunch, I wasn't sure what to expect. It was pretty empty when we went in. The service was pleasant and the owner is quite a charming woman! She offered my Irish friend some of their famous Irish bread and he said that it was the best he's ever had. Then there's the rest of the food. I had the crab cakes and subbed a salad. I can't remember, but with the substitution, it was $14 or $16, me thinks. Two small crab cakes and a small salad arrived at my table. So small, that I went back to my office and ate "second lunch" there :/ My friend had the shepherd's pie and it too was small. Nice people, but I think when visiting again, I'll stick with the Irish food of the liquid kind.

We came here promptly at 11:00 am and they were not seating yet. So we took a stroll through the pike market. We returned about 30 minutes to an open seating. We chose to sit inside near the patio door. The server was friendly and polite. My son ordered the corned beef pasty with a side of clam chowder. He said the pasty was delicious but left him wanting more, as in seconds and thirds. He claimed the clam chowder was the best he'd ever had. Husband ordered the Danny Boy Special which happened to be corned beef and cabbage. The beef was so tender yet held together on the fork. The cabbage was perfectly boiled/steamed and was in a wedge, not shredded or chunked. The creamed potatoes came with a wonderfully rich onion sauce/gravy. I ordered the Ballycastle sausage roll. I have never had such great flavors and textures in my mouth at on time. The pastry was perfectly crisp and the sausage and spice mixture inside was soft and delicate. The Bordelaise sauce was similar if not the same as the gravy that came with my husbands meal. Perfection! We had a cup of the daily soup which was potato. But don't let them fool you with potato soup, this was a potato and leek soup with tender chunks and the perfect spices. The table was served a nice amount of sliced soda bread and butter as well. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves Irish food.

I came here with some ladies (invited by my friend with her friends) and we had a good ol' time. It was a nice, chill afternoon as we sat inside by the open doors. The consensus on food sounded pretty good. My lamb curry pastry things(?) were rather nice. I had something else but the lady accidently brought me fries, instead (I didn't notice this until after they were just sitting in the middle getting cold - "who ordered fries?" haha). With the rest not hungry anywhere, I was like, "sweet, I can always use some good fries". I didn't bother getting it clarified because sometimes we just let it slide, you know what I'm sayin'? My whiskey ginger was good. It was my first there and enjoyable. My friend, turned on by ghostly adventures, mentioned they have a tour in that building... no thanks, dude, noooo thank ye.

A true Seattle icon. This is a great place to go and have a delicious meal. The service when I was there was quick and the atmosphere perfect. Live music every night and it was a good evening. Staff checked in a few times - made sure my ice tea was filled when asked, and gave me a chance to read through the menu. Ordered a few appetizers - an Irish salad and then a lamb dish. Both were great and made a filling, balanced meal. Outside dinning was an option, but I choose the wood paneled back room where the musician was. Kells never disappoints for a great experience.

Irish cider is really good. You have to wait for a long time for your waiter if it's a nice day out. Servers always seem busy... Almost to busy to help you. Was brought three different dishes with mushrooms after sending the initial one back and making it clear I was allergic. Then they tried to charge me for the uneaten/untouched dinner. Cider was great, food I didn't even get to try.

Blech. Why is this bar so popular? No ventilation? Check! Loud as fuck live music preventing me from hearing my friend next to me screaming to get a word in? Check! Overpriced beer and food? Check and Check! I don't understand why people like this place. Unless you have a Y chromosome or like to wear boot cut jeans circa 2003, I would skip this place. Ick and Ick. Came here for a birthday party that was supposed to be at Pink Door, which unfortunately was booked up from a burlesque show. So of course I come dressed for Pink Door and NOT Kell's (I Goodwilled the boot cut jeans YEARS ago), so I felt a bit overdressed and slightly sad I wasted a hot outfit for this dump of a place. First of all the service was craptastic to the max. The server forgot our drinks on multiple occasions and we were left waiting. The food was worse. There were some orders of French fries that showed up which were disappointingly hard and crusty. I was so damn hungry from saving my stomach room for the delights of the Pink Door all day, I ordered the chicken since I needed to fill my stomach so I could have drinks. When the chicken came it looked fine, but taking a bite was a different story. The chicken was slathered in some kind of watered-down sauce that was a mixture of sweet & sour sauce, mixed with a ketchup-like substance. Ick. Here's the worst part...The bill came: $31+ for 1 Hef and the gross ass chicken. Not only was the chicken horrendous, it was WAAY overpriced! I would expect this type of food at say...Applebee's but the cost was comparable to El Gaucho! WTF Kell's. I could have gotten a fantastic meal across the street (Yes, Pink Door...sigh) for less money. Never, ever again.

This review is for the reserved area only. I attended a private Balvenie tasting hosted on the upper level, and it really is the perfect size for a graduation party, a more intimate reunion, or a promotional event. They have bathrooms upstairs and a view of the water that would be gorgeous for a long Seattle summer evening. The bartender that served our party was incredibly pleasant and knowledgeable, and was able to serve ~40 people quickly. Best of all, they serve Balvenie! I'm not around the Pike Place area often, but when I am I know where to go for some good scotch whisky.

This review is from our visit back in the spring. First of all the owner and her daughter both engaged in long conversations with us. The owner enticed us with stories since the building was once a morgue and if I heard her correctly the bodies were received and stored in this establishment. Because of the friendly atmosphere, the food was like comfort food. It wasn't the best but it was by far not the worst. Again, having the owner share funny stories really made our visit. As we were leaving, the daughter gave both of my children free t-shirts. How awesome is that?

    (5)
  • Sally-Ash S.

We went here because of the story that it used to be a Seattle morgue. Unfortunately there were no signs or historic relics. You'd never know unless you already knew! The food was traditional Irish, and let's face it, they aren't renown for great food. It was very potatoe heavy...guess there shouldn't be a surprise there. But if you are used to Aussie Shepard's pie which is mainly meat with a topping of potatoes, be prepared for this to be flipped on its head with all potatoe and very little meat. See pic. I thought the service was okay to good. We had a true Irishman who gave us the history of the Irish potatoe famine. I thought he was cool and added to the experience.

We came to have some drinks and food, the server was nice, however the service was not good at all, we came during happy hour (4-7) and there was some people sitting outside, since the weather was nice we decided to sit there too, right when we got there a lady was complaining about the service but we didnt take that seriuos, later we decided to ask for fries since we thought it was going to be quick (those should be quick we thought), but we were wrong, after 30 mins we decide to ask the server about our fries, then after another 5 mins he came back saying they had burnt the first batch and preparing a new one (bs to me), so just asked him to cancel the order, he said ok, and 2 mins after we had the check with us (that was fast!), so we just paid and left.

We brought an out of town family member here on Memorial Day 2015 and had a nice lunch. The best part of our meal was lovely interaction with the owners' daughter, whose name I regrettably didn't get. She stopped to talk to my children and the rest of our party, and seemed genuinely interested. She then gave the kids (age 5 and 8) sweet little stuffed dolls in soccer, sorry, football , uniforms that she told them were named after her own grown children. My kids had been toted around Pike Place Market and were hungry and cranky, yet our experience at Kell's made our day so much better. Thank you!

Great atmosphere however when we ordered the waitress was less than friendly. It took forever to get our food and when it did come my meal was cold. We also paid and extra $2 to get french fries. Don't bother they were like fried air and also cold. We told the waitress about the cold meal and she said they would make another one. Everyone was done eating and the replacement meal still had not come so we asked them not to charge us for it which she did but she was very unpleasant. Go for the beer. Not the food.

Stopped by for a drink during PAX weekend and the service was great! What a wonderful summer weekend with lovely blue sky above our head and quaint little alley in our surrounding. I liked that the setting outside was not too noisy like bars usually are, but instead very relaxing and comfortable. If it were closer to where I lived, and the parking wasn't such a nightmare by the market, I would love to come here regularly.

I only came to Kells to have drinks, but based on that it wasn't a bad experience. I had come across Kells during the Market Ghost Tour and I ended up coming back to it to meet a friend there. Service was prompt and I was pleasantly surprised to find Kilkenny Cream Ale on tap. They had a great selection of Whiskeys and Scotches on hand as well. Although I enjoyed my visit to Kells, there was nothing particularly amazing about it to give it a higher rating.

This traditional Irish pub has that cool vibe and air about it. Nestled down an alley next to some cool outside cafes and right up the hill from Pikes Market where they throw fish. Dropped in on a Friday evening with some friends and a couple of Irish whiskeys. The band in the back was playing all my favorite Irish lullabies. I think I even jumped up and sang a few songs from my youth. I'm pretty sure it was "the Rover" but then again it was probably the whiskey talking. Parking can be a bit troublesome but hey it's downtown Seattle what do expect. The bar area was a little small, not as small as in Ireland but they make up for it with a large back room. The wait staff did a great job at keeping the whiskey flowing and the band kept everyone smiling. Next time in Seattle drop in to Kells and have a few pints. It's easier to cab it there so you can roll out with ease, literally.

Did you know Kells has an upstairs? This space is perfect for corporate parties and private events of all kinds. I recently attended a really lovely Scotch tasting and the Kells team (and the distillery) pulled out all the stops! I was really impressed with the space first of all, as it was quiet, spacious, and had gorgeous views at night of the Sound and Post Alley. You could easily seat 80-90 people here or host upwards of over 150 if there's room for standing. The catered food was delicious and plated wonderfully, the staff was attentive and kind, and the drinks served were excellent. I really can't think of anything that I didn't love. Combined with Kells famous history as a longtime bar and haunted space, I just think this place is really neat for events. The rest of the bar downstairs is massive and more appropriate for watching sports, meeting new people and generally hanging out in a fun, casual atmosphere. It looked like they were packed with regulars even early on a Tuesday evening. I've got to come back and eat and drink more, but as far as I can tell - this is a place to really be a fan of if you're in Seattle. Silly it took me so long to finally, FINALLY come here for drinks.

Fine Irish pub down by Pike's Place. Surprisingly, not too touristy. Service was a tad slow, but they were very busy. Beer was cold and tasted great - we will be back!!

What happened? Did the place sell? New management? Or some new internal policy that dictates that during tourist season they can have horrible service because most people won't every be back in Seattle? We hit up Kells twice in the last month. Both times, the service was horrible. Not in-your-face rude, but disinterested and inattentive. And as the place wasn't packed for both our visits, I have no idea why we had to flag down our servers for drink reorders, and had to hunt them down and hand them back the check so we could pay and go. I still love the space, and when you can get an outside table in the sun, all the better. The food is pretty solid for Irish-style pub grub - too bad one has to work so hard to get it.

I have good friends in Ireland, so was excited to try an authentic Irish pub. I went for an early dinner and the place was not busy. After we were seated, we had to wait over ten minutes to be brought a menu, which I thought was odd. Staff was walking past us and no one bothered to help us until the bartender noticed us and got someone to help us. That's why they got for stars, one was deducted for sub-par service. We ordered the cheese plate to start, I wasn't really impressed and will not order again. I got the shepherd's pie, it was good and filling. My friend got the stew, which he enjoyed very much. I also ordered the seasonal citrus beer and it's probably one of my favorite beers I've ever had! Will be back, hopefully the service will be better the second time around.

Good, solid traditional Irish food done well, not "trendy." Great beers on tap, and a wonderful selection of whiskeys. As any local restaurant in a fluctuating neighborhood the service varied on the different nights I've been there. But the owners are very hospitable, the atmosphere awesome, and with good food and drinks, what else could you want?!?!?! Excellent, thank you!

On a saturday afternoon on a Sunday in the middle of june I was impressed it was so easy to get outdoor seating. The drinks are meh but the quesadilla is excellent! nothing to exciting, I just wish our server had been wearing a bra. One plus was that they did have a small tv over the bar that my boyfriend could see from where we were sitting outside so he could watch the world cup.

The Irish cheese plate was pretty good. So were the different pastys. The place has two bars on the ground floor (supposedly the place is haunted, but the only spirits I saw came in bottles). I think the next time I am in the area, I will return here for the other dishes on the menu.

Looked like a good spot. My partner and I were told to sit anywhere. Then we were ignored. No menus, no water, no service. 2 other couples came in and they were told the same, but they got menus and some water. First and last time sadly.

In 2011 I gave Kells five stars. Since then, I don't know. I've had good and bad experiences here. I was willing to overlook this and that for awhile. But there's been so many little problems at this point. I am being generous with 3 stars. Many friends have had a great time here. But many of them have had issues too. A lot of the people who work here are family and they have each other's back no matter what. If you have a problem with one of them, don't expect any of the others to help you out.

This was one of those lunches where we were just walking around looking for a restaurant, not sure which genre we wanted, hoping for a place to just call out. When I saw the words "Irish Pub", they got my attention - I had mouth-watering visions of shepherd's pie, boxty, fish and chips, corned beef and cabbage: Irish food is the best when you're OK with meat and potatoes, but traditional American diner fare just sounds too boring. When we walked in, it looked like, you guessed it, an Irish pub. Wooden tables, chairs, floors, fans, fixtures, everything. OK, I've never been to Ireland, but at least this is what they look like in the movies. The menu was disappointing until I realized that it folded out, with a whole two extra columns than I saw initially. Don't worry, they do have most of what you would expect: they had a corned beef and cabbage daily special, as well as shepherd's pie, and even some pasties. OK, I thought those were Cornish, but Cornwall is close to Ireland. No boxty, unfortunately - it's a shame it's so hard to find those delicious beef-stuffed potato pancakes. I went with the shepherd's pie, on account of its being largely potatoes, combined with the fact that I would be running the marathon the next day. My brother and his wife went with the corned beef and cabbage pasty and the sausage roll, respectively. We also got the potato soup with it. The soup was excellent. It was a nice, aromatic mixture of potatoes and spices, and possibly the most satisfying potato-based soup I have had. Down here in the American Southwest, potato soups are made to taste like potatoes, by which I mean, quite bland. The shepherd's pie was tasty, but right in line with other shepherd's pies I have had. It's really difficult to blow someone away with shepherd's pie, given how traditional it is. Shepherd's pie isn't good or bad; it's correct or incorrect. I heard good things about the sausage roll and the pasty, although the pasty was quite small indeed. Do not get the pasty if you are starving. They are about half the size of pasties I have had elsewhere (although, to be fair, "elsewhere" is only one restaurant, and one that specializes in pasties). Near the end of our meal, a friendly Irish woman whom we gathered to be an owner of some sort came over and started a chat with us. Some diners may find this annoying, but I think it really added to the charm of the place. When we got the check, I found the bill for the three of us to be cheaper than my previous day's lunch at lola down the street. Kell's is certainly affordable. I would say Kell's is a pretty good Irish pub, with solid food, although I wish they had boxty.

This is a great place to come, get a drink and listen to live Irish music! Loved how everyone was getting so into the music, clapping, stomping and jigging! When the band took breaks the dj was great at keeping with the atmosphere! Even on a busy Saturday night our server was very tentative and always noticed when our beers were empty. We had gotten there early and was able to get a table. Later in the night they were getting packed. Not sure about the food since no one ordered but plan to be back even if just for the jigging!

We were looking for an Irish pub with live music and our interwebs search came up with this place. We sat out on the "patio" which is actually on the alley. Nice to enjoy the fresh air but a lot of people walking by, can be quite noisy. Lots of people smoking too which if you don't smoke - be warned. It took quite awhile for a server to even recognize we were there and being menus but she was very attentive and friendly early on. Good selection of beers on tap. The food menu was a bit smaller than I expected but enough variety. I had the clam chowder to start which was quite good. My entree was the corned beef and cabbage. The corned beef was extremely dry and tough, it came with mashed potatoes and gravy. The gravy tasted like it came out of a can and try dumped a bunch of pepper in it. My friend had the traditional Irish stew, he really liked it. I tried it and I must agree, it was good. As I said, the service started decent. By the end of our meal, our server was no where to be seen. It was later in the evening and was no longer busy but she was missing and our drinks empty. This annoyed me but she didn't seem to pay any attention. We went into the back bar after our meal to see the live music. It was very busy and hard to get drinks but to be expected on a Saturday night. Enjoyed the band and the mix of patrons was nice, a wide range of people. I would recommend this place as a decent Irish pub in the area.

Great and authentic Irish pub in Post Alley downtown. When you feel like pub fare, whisky, sports on the tele and live Irish folk music, this is a good option, especially for those on foot downtown. Try the sausage Pasty (pronounced pah-stee). Recommended!

Wonderful views, cold beers on tap, good appetizers and a great location. Kells Irish Pub is a hidden gem in the Pike Place Market area on Post Alley. If you are using GPS to find it, Post Alley is not a street you drive on, it is an alley. Park as if you are going to Pike Place Market, then walk to Post Alley and you are there. Friendly staff and a business that cares about giving back to the community and non profits makes this a 5 star recommended Pub. Thanks Kells Irish Pub for supporting the Firefighters Climb LLS event on the 29th!

Kells is your standard Irish pub with no real highlights or lowlights. You can bet they have Guinness on tap with some Irish Whiskey on the wall. Service was good, and the baseball game was on one of the small TVs. Prices were on the expensive side but I guess it's the norm for Pike Place. I might stop by again for happy hour.

Kells is the best! Always a great time! Great service, staff and great company. Rory is a fantastic and personable bar tender and makes great drinks. Menu is good too, great happy hour snacks. Highly recommended for groups and getting together with friends. More than 5 stars!

I love Kells! Perfect little Irish bar. Drinks are great, food is good, but the best part is always the atmosphere... so lively! Can't help but have a good time there. :)

The food was incredible. We had the Irish Coddle (a sausage stew) and a beef patsy with an Irish potato soup. Incredible flavor for both! And very different flavors than any other restaurant. The restaurant has great ambiance and, while the waitresses didn't stop by quite as often as we personally would have liked, we will certainly be back!! Oh, by the way. Did I mention the Irish Whisky cake for dessert? Sooooo good!

Local brews on tap are just a start. Add on good food and a great game atmosphere and you have a fun pub! Add to that Irish live music and you have Kells! ... Now.... if they could only actually make a decent pasty. :-( I'm from Michigan and went to school in the U.P. We know our pasties. Kell's are more akin to savory PASTRIES than pasties (Mid-west or traditional Irish). That's not to say they're bad. They're not, but if you're ordering one, you either have had one and are expecting a PASTY (and so, will be disappointed)... OR you don't know what a pasty is, and will be done a disservice by being misled. Either way, don't go for the pasties. Go for the beer, go for the music, go for the fun.

Great place for a beer and good music. I love also there wide selection of cider they have. I always love going her on the weekend if I just want to enjoy a good bar with friends and music. This is a Seattle staple every Seattlite should go to and have a pint.

My first time here. Have heard good things about Kells. I found it very nice, clean and all Irish. The service was fast and friendly. Any questions we had were answered and even some great suggestions for food Beer. Our food was outstanding. It was easy to talk and hold a conversation. I noticed all the other patrons were enjoying themselves as we were. I would highly recomend Kells to anyone and I will be back. A plus, the Pike Place Market is only a block away.

This place only stays alive because it's in a tourist trap. We were given tiny glasses for water and they were never refilled. The clam chowder was bland as well.

Get your drink on! This is very similar to the San Francisco version. Irish. Drinks. Food. Dark wood and mirrors give it a classic pub feel that went great with the traditional stout. The staff are friendly, the mixed drinks are made well, and it's a place that I will return to. The crowd was diverse just like the rest of Seattle. They offer a ton of food and drink options so I'm sure everyone can find something they'll like. Kells is great.

BEWARE- THIS PLACE WILL SCAM YOU!!!!!!! Wandered in here to kill time before my flight. Ordered the open face crab sandwich. It looked like the chef microwaved american cheese on top and slapped two slices of tomatoes on it. I could only stomach a few bites of the sandwich. The waitress noticed I didn't eat it and offered to replace it with something else, I opted for the clam chowder. When my bill arrived she charged me for the crab AND the chowder. She said she would go speak to her manager (unpleasant irish woman) who then refused to take it off my bill. I've worked in the food industry for a number of years. Any respectable establishment that wants to retain patrons puts the customer first. This is restaurant 101 people. The woman came to my table by asking "What's the problem? You have a question." She was extremely abrasive, refused to take the crab off my bill even though I didn't eat it. She claims I knew what I was ordering (really!?!) and claims I'm the only one who has complained about the sandwich in 31 years (REALLY!?!). Then this woman has the nerve to overcharge me. I actually ended up tipping the waitress because I felt bad that she had to be employed by such a wretched human being. And then the woman has the nerve to overcharge my bill. I was shocked when I saw my statement. BECAUSE I UNDERSTAND YOU CLEARLY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO OPERATE YOUR ESTABLISHMENT, THAT IS ILLEGAL! I should report you to the BBB and file a report. I have never experienced such awful customer service. Needless to say I will not be returning.

All staff was friendly and very helpful. Had a very fun night sitting at the bar. The bartender gave us a list of places to stop at on our way to the ballpark the next day. Every one of the bars was a home run! Great recommendations. We purchased a sweater from Kells as a gift for my dad in Utah. When he revived the sweater it turned out to be too big. He called & spoke with Karen the manager who was very friendly and he explained what happened. Karen was quick to take care if the situation and happily exchanged it for a smaller size by way of ups. Thank you so much Karen!! My dad was very happy with his gift!!

I always loved when my mother made corned beef and cabbage with mashed potatoes growing up. Now making the gravy is different, but still a good staple to have. Last month I found a restaurant where I could find myself a delicious gluten free gravy. Kells Irish Restaurant and Pub is in Seattle, WA. They also have a Portland and San Francisco site I could see from their website. It's on Post Alley and was relatively easy to find once we wandered through Pike's Place. The atmosphere of the place felt like a true Irish pub. It was rather dark though. I had called their Seattle location the day before just to check up on their use of cayenne pepper. I had seen a few gluten free options from yelp reviews. The waiter that answered the phone was rude. He actually used the phrase "what do you want?" I was than undecided on whether I wanted to go ahead with going their with friends the next day. We decided to still go despite the lack of phone etiquette. The wait staff was not the most attentive I've had, but the waitress did a fine job checking on gluten free options. I ordered the cheese platter and gave the bread to my husband which he appreciated. The cheese platter was delicious! I have a weakness for fancy cheese. The gluten free entrée options were scarce: salad or corned beef and cabbage. I went ahead and got the corned beef and cabbage. It was very good. The gluten free gravy had a nice flavor. The owner of the restaurant was wandering around mingling with patrons which I thought was nice. She came over and shared a joke with our friend who was in town visiting us. The ghost stories our friend told us though made me nervous in the restaurant. She had done the Seattle ghost tour and proceeded to tell us everything she had heard. Apparently the building Kells is in used to be a mortuary and there is supposedly a little girl in a red dress that haunts the place. Our friend said she's supposed to be a nice ghost that likes to play with the children in the restaurant. Personally, I do not like ghost stories and was happy when the subject changed. Overall the experience was a good one. The food was good, drinks were great, and the atmosphere was nice. I'll probably only ever go back if I'm in the mood for corned beef and cabbage though. I'll have to keep an eye on their online menu for more gluten free options. My review from theglutenfreetraveler.com

Came here last Sunday and was greeted by the owner at the entrance. We were just trying to take a peek to see if would like it here but she was so friendly and kind, she made us fell like we were guest at her house. How could we turn around now, so we sat down and experienced a great time here. If you choose to sit outside, you'll have a great view of the water. We choose to sit inside because it was so darn cozy and we could still see outside. The food tasted yummy and the server well, she was just ok but the owner stopped by our table to check up on us which was really nice. We are so coming back here next weekend.

My 3rd negative experience at Kell's. It's sad because it's such an historic place, and in the heart of Pike Place Market. My previous two visits here, the service was terrible. It took so long to get our order taken, and we had to keep walking up to the bar to get things that should have already been given to us. This time, I couldn't even get seated! The two servers and the owner were wandering around doing little tasks, but continue used to ignore me. The restaurant had maybe 8 people at tables, very slow. The owner seemed more worried about the t-shirt display than why I was standing there obviously waiting to be helped. I gave them a good 5 minutes to respond to me as the employees continued walking by, but no eye contact or interest in my business. I finally walked out. I went a couple of blocks away to Etta's. Excellent service and food!

Came on a bad night maybe?? Followed bad advice from a Seattle local? Probably. Thursday night between 10pm-1am...this place was close to dead. Huge space and probably not equipped to take on a "surprise" visit from a crown of over 30+ people. A lovely older gentleman playing irish folk songs on stage = "Live music". I guess this is a good place to chill if you don't want to be bothered and wanna listen to old irish folk songs. For a group of 20-something year olds...we really shoulda gone somewhere else.

Really attractive outdoor eating/drinking area overlooking the sound and Pike Place Market. Good selection of brews, including some house brews - I had and really enjoyed the stout. The potato "yarl" is very tasty and unusual.

Food was bland and over cooked. We had Irish Lamb stew which was bland and flavorless. The scallop special was completely overcooked and served with potatoes that were so overcooked there was barely any potato left on them. Service was incredibly slow. Water is served in very small glasses and with slow service, it was like we were constantly out of water and thirsty. Menu wasn't that exciting to me. Definitely look at it online before you go to make sure there are things you would enjoy eating. I had a hard time picking anything that sounded good.

Not worth my time at all. The hostess was awful. The food was not memorable at all. The chair I was sitting on was greasy! like old grease stuck to it, it ruined my pants. It was just a terrible experience. We had a sandwich and a pastry, and like I said, it was nothing special at all. Our waiter was much more professional, he did what he is there for, and was polite about it.

Went to Kells today and had a horrible experience! First sign of trouble was they were the only bar on the strip on a sunny & warm day that failed to fill up its mediocre patio. Their menu was old & outdated and it advertised 4 beers that they no longer served. Then the (very polite) server offered an "open bar" which could make any drink or cocktail I wanted. I ordered a double Marguerita, for which I got charged $18!!! (A single was $9.00 x 2 for double!) We complained to the owner, who appeared a senile, indigent who was oblivious to our presence even after we expressed our disappointment and utter amazement at his audacity! Don't drink here, there are many other professional, honest drinking establishments in the busy Pike Place Market area!!

We had just got off the plane from indiana and this was our first taste of Seattle. We were not pleased. The waitress was mean to my sister for making special requests and at one point rolled her eyes at my sister. I ordered the seafood pasty with the soup. The shrimp and crab were really good but I just wish that I had a bigger portion. The soup was ok. It was a bland potato something that I had to force down because the pasty didn't fill me up.

Had dinner our first night after stumbling in based on the specials on the front chalkboard a frame. I had the halibut, wife had bacon wrapped scallops, we shared a bowl of chowder and a bowl of seafood bisque. It set the tone for our entire trip and despite a little clusminess and awkwardness by our waiter, it was a fabulous meal.

Service is lacking. One waitress for everyone. And her shirt is open in the back, and buttons unbuttoned to where her boobs are popping out in your face. The best thing I had is the lamb farl. The mussels... As soon as I put one in my mouth... Disgusting. It was like they were steamed in Porta potty sewage. And my Moscow Mule didn't even come in a copper mug. Won't be coming here again.

Good for Quickie Stop-Ins, Good for Events, and KELLS Keeps My Respect. SITREP Kells is a straight-forward pub that does the job satisfactorily. It's not my first choice for a planned evening out, but as a spontaneous stop downtown after work with co-workers, or even family on the weekend after tromping through Pikes Place Market, it's still a great place to end up. THE VIBE & THE CROWD I just don't feel ...."comfortable" here. This is not the kind of place I like to really relax and kick back. For me, it's just not my crowd. And let's be honest: it's harder to quantify the metrics of a BAR/PUB than it is a restaurant. With a restaurant, people are going to rave about the FOOD. You and your date, for example, may not associate with anybody else in the restaurant the 45-90 minutes you are there than your server the whole night, and yet you will still give the place 5 stars because the food was delectable, the wine was sublime and the dessert was orgasmic. What does a bar/pub have going for it that distinguishes itself from other bars/pubs? Well, for the most part it is NOT the beverages, especially if we are talking about happy hour brews and beers. There's only so many ways you can serve Guinness (or PBR for that matter) on tap or get a bottle uncapped for you. For me, with bars/pubs, it's the PEEPS. And unlike a restaurant where I may be on an intimate date, if MY PEEPS (my kindred spirits) are not at the bar/pub, then WHY the f*ck am I am at THIS bar? I want to be where my PEEPS are. THE SETUP So VIBE is important to me when it comes to bars & pubs. But I won't pan a place outright either if I believe it serves it purpose. Most of the time I DO walk through KELLS' doors is because there is a political fundraising event going on: for example, my brother went to college with Dow Constantine, so our whole family shows up to give our support to Dow. And if there is something else going on to support a local candidate or a decent cause, I'll be inclined to participate. But as far as really "hanging out", my friends and I prefer to go up to Capitol Hill. Or even just pop into Noc Noc just around the corner (and they have better mixed drink specials). In addition, I'm honestly not crazy about tourist trap bars - or to be more precise and fair, establishment bars & pubs stuck in the tourist trap ZONE - being close to Pike's Place Market during the day / happy hour afternoon is a double-edge sword. Yet I can't deny that when I am with older family members, or older co-workers, KELLS has a certain common denominator attraction that everyone can deal with. It has the brews I enjoy and some of the munchies I like to eat and there are far worse places I could be - like Walla Walla. THE LOWDOWN Kells keeps it real enough for me that I still can enjoy the times I stop by for an event or hang with some friends and have a cold one.

Very warm feeling inside, food is great, I had the clam chowder. We even meant the owner she is from Belfast been in business for 30 years in Seattle. She is such a cute old lady with an ancient that we couldn't stop listening to.

The food was good. Waitress didn't even pretend to care about us. I was told soda refils were free, but that I would y get one refill. My portion size was laughable and I was done first at the table and left still hungry, even though it was delicious. Will never come back or recommend, though prices were good.

My sis and I were excited to have lunch, here, since it was formally the embalming room of the old Butterworth Mortuary. Just seemed like it would be interesting...but it was quite disappointing. The split pea soup was awesome, though!! So, the server took our drink order and we both ordered a coke, for lunch. She brought us the coke's and my sis discovered it was diet coke! Yuck!! We despise artificial sweetener. We finally were able to get someone to get us regular cokes. They had to hook up the coke, because it was out. I guess that explains why they though they could get by with serving us diet coke. Later, the server came by and asked if I'd like another coke. I said "yes" and was given another "diet" coke. The soda's were $3.00!! Arrrghh!!!!! I will NEVER be back to this place.

Sit at the bar, it has a great vibe and friendly bartenders. Their front patio is perfect during spring/summer days. Sometimes service outside can be slow, but the people watching and food make it worth it.

Food was great, though a bit overpriced. Scotches were reasonably priced, though check that the one you want is in stock before getting too excited. They need a couple more vegetarian options. We had a nice, casual, semi-romantic dinner, despite one of our two server's being not very positive, and a couple of the single malt scotches we really wanted to try were out of stock. Ambience was good, except one chatty, loud guy. Our other server was positive and extremely apologetic. The cheese plate, veggie pastie, and shepherds pie were excellent though small in portion. Overall we had a nice experience. If you know any of the building history, the place is haunted. I felt it twice, but it didn't deter a good time.

Our English gentleman of a server was very nice and on it. He was always prompt with taking our drink orders but never annoying and lingering. I recently attended a fundraiser for the Philippines at Kell's after the tragedy of Typoon Haiyan. The event was hosted in the upstairs area, it was perfect! The space had a private bar, space for a DJ and still enough room for the event! Plus the owners donated proceeds from drinks to the cause AND they provided some food for the event! AWESOME! We also sat down for a full dinner meal and it was delish! The staff overall were great! I definitely recommend this place, particularly the upstairs area if you are hosting a private party. I was not one of the event planners (so I can't speak to how it was to work with them leading/during the event), but I thought I would write a review because was so impressed with the delicious food and drinks, the event space and the kind hearts of the people of Kell's.

I generally love this place; in my opinion the food is great and I always know what I want to drink so that's never an issue. My two star review is a result of a single bad experience that involved (presumably) the manager/owner (she was an older lady with a nice thick Irish accent, which I would normally love). Here goes: My friend and I stopped in for drinks and lunch. For some reason, my friend wanted some complicated cocktail similar to a long island iced tea (why anyone would order this at an Irish pub is beyond me, but any bar should be able to make something she wants, right?). The server we had was less than helpful in her lack of attempts to understand my friend's request/description of what she wanted - we should have gone ahead and went straight into the bar so the bartender could just have helped us out. But really, if the server didn't get it, she still had the opportunity to discuss it with the bartender before it became a catastrophe. Anyway, my Magner's came and whatever cocktail my friend ordered came, and when she tasted it she just about spat it back out. It was too strong? Or too...something? I don't even know; I tasted it and it was definitely way too sweet and sour for me, but then again I don't drink ridiculous cocktails so I don't really know what she was going for. She sent it back, the server looked super offended, and the older lady with the heavy accent came storming out demanding what was wrong with the drink. When my friend described to her what she felt was wrong with it, she said, "well, you better not go to Ireland then, if that was too strong for yeh," and stormed off. She was visibly angry. It pretty much put a damper on our entire afternoon. For the record, I was an expo and a server in a very busy touristy restaurant for almost two years, and have had my fair share of picky restaurant-goers and generally unhappy patrons. Again, to be fair, my friend was being slightly ambiguous and indecisive, HOWEVER the response to her requests was simply unwarranted. There are much better ways to handle situations like this, like maybe help your patrons figure out what it is that they DO want or like, and putting forth the effort to be familiar with your menu of available liquors, and communicating with your bartender. Kill em with kindness, offer the Nordstrom spirit of customer service, do the best you can. We split the tab, and although my friend threatened to not leave a tip, I still left my standard 20% for my drinks and lunch. I've been there, and I hope our server learned from her experience that day.

Great atmosphere on the side of the pub with the live music. The other side was a bit more modern and lacked the rustic feel of the left side (when facing Kell's from outside) but was still ok. The pub side had good service for being so packed, and the drink pricing was standard for the Pike Place area. The live music was great. Had an overall great time and will be back!

Portion sizes are very small. Waits was not in her game. Brought a check of one amount, but realized after we have our payment that she forgot the desserts. She added them on and swiped without letting us know. Excellent ambiance as an authentic Irish pub.

My first experience here was a few years ago with my boyfriend. We stopped in because we enjoy a good Irish pub. Unfortunately, this isn't one. We got in fairly late and I think that server wasn't happy about it. She ignored us throughout the night even though there were maybe only 3 other people there. The food for me was forgettable, but my boyfriend got a clam chowder or soup. After a few bites he had yet to find any clam and when he asked the waitress to verify that he had what he ordered she dipped her finger in his bowl and said there was a piece of clam right there. It was too small for us to really tell if she was right or not, but regardless, don't touch our food. I had sworn the place off, but my office used to go here for happy hours. The first time I had to organize one I went with the crowds' suggestion. I called a week in advance to set it up and left a voicemail. My call was returned by the surliest woman I've ever spoken to who seemed bad that I was bothering her with business. Clearly customer service is not their forte. I called closer to the date to make sure that things were in order only to arrive and find that no one knew we were supposed to be there. Two of my co-workers had arrived 15 minutes early and when they stated who there were with no one bothered to see if a party was coming in around that time. By the time everyone had arrived there wasn't any food ready even though I had ordered it days before. The waitress took our order only to come back later and say that the kitchen was already working on it... there just wasn't any communication. Now that I set up all of the happy hours, Kells is off the menu. If your going to be this bad at customer service you'd better have the food to back it up. Kells is lacking in both areas. If you'd like a good Irish Pub in the area I would recommend The Owl and Thistle in Pioneer Square.

I ordered a drink and the lemon had mold all over it. We brought it back to the bar and got a new drink and they gave us a well compared to the premium we initially ordered. Very disappointing! Don't think I will come back. I have never had an issue like this in any bar I have been to. Traumatized for life! I will always check my lemons, limes for now on!

We were greeted at the door, asked if we'd like tobsit inside or out, and then told to sit where ever we liked. We sat down in a section and were COMPLETELY IGNORED. Other people came in, a couple right next to us, were promply given menus and water, and we still got nothing. The table next to us got their bill and a little chit-chat, and we still got nothing. After 15 minutes we walked out never to return!

Ask what they have before you order. That's my number one piece of advice. The waitress was very nice, but when I asked for the apple tart? "Sorry, we're out." Which of the two ciders is best? "Well, we only have one of them right now." A friend asked for something else off the menu - didn't have it. I ended up getting the one cider that was available and the baked brie and fruit plate. The fruit slices were ridiculously thin, but the brie was delicious. The cider (don't remember the name, but it started with an 'M') was also good. I might give them one more try, but I wasn't blown away with my first visit.

Very good food, service and drinks at this traditional Irish pub. I had their Irish stew and two others in my party had the salmon special for the day. The wine served was really good but I was somewhat disappointed on their House Lager. It tasted more like a lite beer. We still had an overall good experience on a beautiful Seattle evening.

This place is the best. I've been coming here for over a year now, the bartender is the best. Best service, best times, best events hands down. I recommend coming down for st. Pattys day, it gets wild. The entire staff is super friendly and the food is great too.

Met up with friends and my girlfriend for a meal and a night of live music. I am always up for an Irish pub that pours a good pint. Kells does that, I'm just not to keen on the food. I ordered the Pork Tenderloine, with apple chutney, fresh vegetables and I got mashed potatoes and gravy. It wasn't bad at all but the chop came butterflied to make it appear larger than it actually was. Everything had good flavor but what I was served was not worth $21. My other dislike is the seating area for food is in one side with more bar seating. When there are large groups coming in that all they do is drink it makes having a nice meal almost intolerable. So if you want to have a nice meal come early before the bar really starts going. As for the music, it was great, the other side of Kells has two bars with table service as well. Check and see what playing before hand, we were able to see a great trio playing all sorts or Irish tunes!

This is, hands down, my favorite spot in town. I came to Seattle from out of town to explore an employment opportunity, and met the love of my life here. Now, every time I come into town, he takes me to Kells and we get the same drinks that he ordered for us that night: a Mannys and a shot of Fireball. The bartenders are always nice, and we love the live Irish music. We've been here when it's empty, and when it's packed; regardless, it's always a fun spot to get rowdy or quietly enjoy drinks.

Pretty darn tasty! Was meeting an old friend for lunch today, and outside is cold and damp. Perfect weather for a cup of tea and some bracing Irish fare. I'd never been to Kells and the reviews here seemed fairly positive, so off I went into the blustery wetness that is Fall 2013. The interior of this place is, as many others have stated, all dark wood and pub coziness. The tea came in a nice dainty cup, and was kept full the entire time I was there. I ordered the sausage roll, which came with vegan split pea soup as the soup of the day. All of it was delicious. The pastry on the roll was nice and flaky, while the sausage was perfectly spiced. The soup I was skeptical of, but it had a very nice smoky flavor that was reminiscent of ham. (Considering it was vegan, I wondered what it was, but hey, I eat meat so I wasn't concerned.) All in all, a nice, reasonably priced lunch with fairly perfect portions. I made my trek down to work feeling a little warmer through tea and satisfaction.

More like a 3.5. Great downtown location, nice breezy terrace. Ambience is not totally Irish-pubish. Decent pour of Guinness, friendly service. Big disappointment on a late afternoon that Fish & Chips (on the menu) was not available -- what bonafide Irish pub 'runs out' of F&C? No more fish? Really?? Next to the busiest seafood vendors in the Northwest? I take it back -- 2.5 stars....

Ok, so the Mr. and I took a trip to Seattle and we were told by friend that visiting Kells was an absolute must....well I think we need new friends or at least ones with better taste buds. We arrive at Kells and I am absolutely craving fish & chips. Much to my disappointment Kells does not offer fish & chip because they "don't have a fryer," REALLY! After we thoroughly review the menu we decide on the Sheppard's pie and one of the daily specials, corned beef and cabbage. For starters, the place was not very busy yet somehow our waitress managed to take and excess of 20 minutes to take our order. I wouldn't have been so bad except I could hear her in the back gossiping about "the other I had this table..." After about another 20 minutes our order arrived and generally when you are starving any food, good or bad, taste great. Well, not in this case. The corned beef look and had the texture of jerky. I was extremely dry and tasteless. The cabbage was ok but really how can you go wrong with boiling cabbage. Now the mashed potatoes that came with the corned beef and as the Shepard's pie topping were horrible. They tasted like those potato flakes that come in a box and all you need is to add water. Again, they had no taste, they just did not seem like they were seasoned at all even with a bit of salt. As for the rest of the pie, well I'm just not sure what to say about tasteless food, for a minute there I thought maybe I had a cold and could not taste anything but that was not the case. This time it really was the food. This is by father the WORST Irish restaurant I've ever come across. The ambiance is cozy but I certainly would not come here for the food or the service.

Recommended by some locals, a group of us wandered in one night for dinner. It was early, so we were basically the first table in the joint. Nice happy hour menu with a good selection of drinks and discounted apps (I tried the Scottish bangers...that was some good sausage). I split the brie cheese app with another person at the table - the cheese was amazeballs but the fruit on the plate was a sad compilation of a few overripe and mushy pieces of kiwi, cantaloupe and strawberry. Totally unimpressed with that aspect (they should consider adding a fruit compote or spread instead). Since I scarfed two apps, I went light for dinner and tried the seafood pasty (don't call it a "pay-stie" -- it's a "paaaas-teeeee") and it was very good (also quite small, about 1/4 of the size of the pasty's I've had in MI, but that was okay was already full from cheese & sausage, duh). Most of the table ordered smaller plates but one person had a full entree. Full Irish-inspired menu, so if you're into that type of cuisine it's definitely worth checking out.

I love this place. I have had the good fortune of getting too drunk here on a few occasions. They have a great staff there and I love the authentic feel of an Irish Pub atmosphere that you can get here. That isn't always the case but you get that feel here more so than a lot of other Irish Pubs in Seattle. The staff there is a lot of fun and make being there even better.

This is our regular visit when we are in Seattle. Its a rustic, woody irish bar, and although I haven't been here in the evening for some strange reason, its charm is quite nice during the day.. The wait staff is very helpful and kind and service is quick. I had the sheppards pie which was tasty, and Im always a fan of the corned beef and cabbage.. Definely a great place to visit when you are in the wharf area if you are up for a pub crawl and its fare... Fine cuisine it is not, and if thats what your looking for, this isn't the place. But if you want good healthy food, cold beer and kind folks, this is a great place to start.

Kells is my favorite Irish restaurant, the food is always delicious and the service is great and very friendly. They have the best shepherds pie I have ever had and I have tried it in many other Irish restaurants in and out the Seattle area. The chicken pasty, corn beef and cabbage pasty,Irish stew, soda bread and Irish whiskey cake are very good! If you are visiting the Seattle area specifically the public market don't miss this family run Irish restaurant....Rory is great!

So Kells is a bit of an enigma, its a bar, pub, tourist trap and local hangout. When you show up its a crapshoot which one of its personalities it will be. So I ignore all of it and have a pie & mash & gravy (extra). The food is solid 8, the service can vary depending on the crowd.. Just order two beers at once and you are good to go. Its close to PIke's so it draws the tourist crowd. If you don't like the feel head down to Owl N Thistle instead.

Awesome irish bar with a lot of charm. Kells has to be one of the oldest irish bars still around in Seattle, established 1916. They have your typical selection of irish beers plus more. We were here on a saturday night and to avoid cover, I recommend arriving before 10pm. But even if you end up having to pay cover, the bar is worth it. Live irish music with lots of seating and even some dancing when the crowd gets tipsy enough. It is a live spot down in post alley. I strongly recommend.

Apparently this is a Seattle institution, hence the popularity. But to me, it's just another "Irish-themed" bar -- very much like the many I've already been to. Order a black and tan, you won't be sorry. Prices for beer are fair and there is generally live bands and other entertainment on most nights. It is a cool location, located in the alley behind the Pike's Place Market.

I'll start by saying that I've frequented this establishment since I was 21 years old. I've spent countless amounts of money, made many memories, and enjoyed my time there overall. Today I come with a bitter taste in my mouth that I will be unable to shake. For the past 3 years a friend and myself have hosted an annual Christmas Birthday party there. It's been our spot and we have adored it because we love getting the upstairs banquet hall. Now I must admit that part of this is my fault. I was dealing with the booking manager, Karen, and it seemed all squared away. We had emailed back and forth, but there was some confusion regarding the contract and deposit. We had never paid that in previous years which I stated to her so she said we could have the room without it. When I get there I see that the banquet hall was filled with people I didn't know. This also happened the previous year, but we let it slide. I went downstairs to speak to the manager and she belittled me and said it was my fault for not signing or paying the deposit she told me I didn't have to do. How could I argue that, but at the same time why wasn't she more willing to help me get rid of the strangers in the room I reserved? We are good customers and always make sure we hit the minimum. She was condescending and practically yelling at me. I gave up. When I tried to forget and accept there would be strangers at our party, that's when my friends started telling me they were charging everyone a cover. Now from my understanding when you have booked the space, the guests no longer have to pay the cover. That's where they lost me. I vowed never to return to their bar again. Safe to say my party of over 100 people will be booking a different place next year that will at least hear out a drunk birthday girl that just wants to give you business. Also, I'll pay the deposit if it means I can take car bombs in peace :)

Great Irish Pub feel, Dark wood and open spaces with a large friendly bar. The menu has the classics including a good shepherds pie. They also had a great selection of beer and everything is pretty standard prices. We came in the early afternoon and had great service fast and helpful.

Went here with some coworkers several times while I was in town for work, and also once alone when I couldn't find a seat next door at the White Horse Tavern (which is far and away one of my favorite bars nation wide). The food was ok (standard pub grub). The atmosphere was a bit lacking, and there are better places around. It has sort of a "club" feel on Friday and Saturday night with the live music and starts to get packed, mostly lacking an Irish pub feel.

Neither good not bad. The Guiness pours weren't very good but the food was decent enough. Will probably keep digging around for a better Irish pub but wouldn't say no if I were in the area. Love the atmosphere.

Being Irish you learn there is a proper way to pour Guinness, and that most places don't correctly pour it. Being St Patrick's weekend and my brother's admission he's never been to an Irish bar we had to go. It was packed when we arrived Friday night. Lively fun crowd and music. We walked by on St Patrick's day itself and it looked like the place to be but I'm not gutsy enough to brave the crowds. Really neat place which is worth checking out if you're in Seattle!

I've been to Kells a few times before but only on weekend nights when it is packed and can get pretty rowdy. This weekend was the first time I'd been to Kells during the day and who knew- they have food! My Dad and I shared the sausage roll which was very good. We weren't too hungry, just wanted something to snack on with the beer. Kells was a good choice for killing some time and enjoying each others' company. The quiet bar was a haven up one block from the bustling, packed Pike Place. I'd return for a day time beer. I haven't been to Kells at night in quite a while but I remember enjoying the live Irish music. Last time I went it was $5 cover to get in on a weekend night.

Horrid. Absolutely horrid! Ordered: Ale, Clam Chowder, Mignon and Shep Pie. For starters this was not a first choice place to eat. I had wanted to go to Pike Place Chowder on Post Alley, but it was closed so my fall back on a Sunday at 6pm was Kells. I was beyond disappointed. I had to ask TWICE for a glass of water. The Chowder came AFTER the meals....which were tasteless and cold. A complete disappointment. My Shep Pie was piping hot on top and cold on the bottom. Everything required salt and pepper. Mignon was ordered medium rare and came out well done! Will never return here!

I stopped in to this place after Book of Mormon not too long ago. Beer is awesome and food is pretty good too. Wait staff was pretty quick and on the spot. I would go back if I'm in the area. Nothing was too exceptional about this place.

I went to Kells once many many years ago and all I recall is that it was dark and my friend met some dude from North Carolina. I never had any inclination to go back until another friend suggested Kells as a post - work meet-up spot last night. It was early evening so there were more old people than DBs in the crowd, tables were plentiful, and there was no cover or live music (thank god). Service was very friendly (almost too friendly) and attentive. I appreciated that our waitress had opinions and suggestions about the food and drinks. She also offered to split the bill three ways without us even asking. Looking at the menu, I was SHOCKED at some of the food prices. Pretty sure I've never seen $20+ items at a pub before. Nothing on the very limited HH menu interested me so I ordered a salad with chicken. It was about $14 (!) but I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was, especially the vinaigrette. Salad + two beers + tax and tip = $30. That is probably the most I've ever spent during happy hour. My friends agreed that there weren't very good HH deals. I kinda doubt I'll be back to Kells anytime soon but it was a nice evening with friends, and not much to complain about except the prices.

Ah Kells, how I appreciate you tolerating me in your establishment. In an effort to maintain my anonymity and future entry status, I will only say that this has been my last-stop-of-the-night bar a few times and not elaborate further. But seriously, this is a great Irish bar. Wood from floor, bar, to ceiling (just like an old pub should be) and stocked with a good number of drafts. Last trip in I had a Kilkenny Cream Ale that is one of my new look-fors when visiting an Irish pub (a perfect drink in my opinion). Its right in Post Alley and a must stop for me if I'm in the area; especially if they have a live band playing Irish tunes.

The food here really is just not very good and their beer selection is nothing special. I think this must exist merely due to tourist traffic. Service is ok but also nothing special. With all the other options around the market this place just isn't worth it.

I've walked through this place a couple times while being on a ghost tour, but never actually stopped in for fun. We decided to stop in after said Ghost Tour to have a couple drinks...or more...There just happened to be a live Irish band playing. They were amazing! It was so much fun just watching them play. Great selection of beer of course. We had a great time and would definitely stop in again--hopefully that band will be there again!

Fine bar for a week night. Actually did remind me of Ireland. Their chowder was pretty good and I enjoyed their long list of whisky with affordable prices.

Kell's is a great place to visit in Pike Place's famed post alley. Great Irish cuisine and beer. However I experienced an unpleasant encounter with the bartender "Rory". This guy was a complete asshole to me and my friends. I only ordered one beer and ran my card. I figured since this was a quick stop in that I would just skip the tip (I normally tip very generously btw). But Rory after picking it up, immediately checked the bill and commented, "You forgot to tip." Shocked I said, "Oh sorry I didn't know it was mandatory." To which he replied, "No it's just rude." Okay so I understand maybe I should have tipped, but any decent worker would never mention it to a paying customer. I said, "It was rude to ask for a tip." And Rory then said "how am I supposed to pay rent?" You know what that's not the customers problem. I delivered pizzas for two years and spent my own gas money driving people's pizza to them so I understand what it's like not getting a tip, but I never once said anything to a customer because in the end it's their choice. Don't take it out on me. Then Rory rudely shut off the television which was playin the NBA playoff game we were watching and told us, "There's a sports bar down the street." And with that I was done. Dissapointed and shocked I walked out. This experience has ruined my once high opinion of this place. He spoiled the restaurant for me. So if this guy is in be warned. Extreme asshole! Be prepared to tip or be harassed.

If Rory is behind the bar....order from the waitress. He has no interest in actually bartending just wants the tip...which would be fine if he worked for it but he is more interested in texting.

This is a good bar. I went here for a yelp event and we had a fantastic experience tasting scotch upstairs. The space is cool. Lots of old wood, and the drinks we had were really well made. I don't make it downtown very often, but I would come back. I can't speak to the food, but everything else was great.

Awesome Irish Pub. Great place for a beer or two or three. The food on the other hand. Let's just say if you're hungry go somewhere else to eat. Corned Beef and Cabbage was not good. Very small portion. Mashed potatoes with store bought gravy. Anyways sorry for carrying on. I just expected more. Still a great place for a beer!

The bouncer here late night is seriously hurting this business - which otherwise seems like a fun place to hangout. He started kicking patrons off the patio LONG before closing time and I overheard several other patrons arguing with him and telling him off. Sad to see one bad apple do so much damage to an entire business. (this is an updated version of my profanity riddled original review, I also upped the stars because I don't want to punish the business for their brain dead doorman).

I (used) to go to Kell's three or four times a year, whenever the craving for a decent Irish-inspired meal struck me and I was in downtown Seattle. After the last couple of visits and especially after my meal there last night, I'm not going to bother anymore. Where to start. The hostess wanted to seat us in a tiny two-top in the far back corner, next to the service doors despite our request to be "up front, away from the noisy tables already in the back". After pleading to get moved to a quieter table and away from the garbage chute, our waiter appeared and quickly took drink orders... ...*how* does a pseudo-Irish pub "just run out" of Harp at 8:00 on a Friday night? Really? OK, something else then and I'll have the Irish stew seeing as you don't have bangers and mash anymore. Thanks! The beer was OK but the "stew" was more of a small pile of stewed meat beside a small pile of over-steamed vegetables next to a pile of mashed potatoes. Really? Look up "stew" in any cookbook and the picture will not look like this. This looked more like "components for stew, minus any broth or gravy". Notably, about 10 minutes after we left the restaurant, I noticed a strange metallic meat aftertaste in my mouth that was not pleasantly similar to the flavour of the stew. Luckily it didn't turn out to be anything but the start of some indigestion. There was no bread served before the meal or with the stew, which is pretty important. I would have asked for some if our waiter had ever returned to check on us or even made a fleeting appearance on the dining room floor. So... this experience along with the last few *meh* encounters at Kells means I need to find a new pub to quell my bangers and mash cravings.

Kells is a cool iris bar that Is located right next to the marketplace. They clover their guinness which is always a plus for me and the know how to pour it and managed the co2 lines. The bar inside is wooden and gives the pub an authentic iris feel. If you are looking for an iris bar in Seattle this is the place.

We came here because the line to Pike Place Chowder was too long. I ordered a bowl of chowder ($5.50) and a pint of Kell's IPA ($5.50). The chowder was good and it came with soda bread. I liked the soft potatoes in my chowder. Food was good and service was good. Though it was pricey for such a small bowl of soup. I'm glad there was soda bread to fill the rest of my stomach. There's nothing super special about Kell's; I'm not dying to come back a second time. Also, I don't really care much for irish pubs. I don't know what it is about them but I'm not particularly attracted to them. So, if you're a big fan of irish pubs, I'm sure you'll have a more enjoyable experience.

Horrible place, rude owners. Hair found in my food and they would not stand behind their dish. Told me I should be ashame of myself for bringing it to their attention and that if I were in Ireland people would be appalled. I recommend that you don't step a foot into that establishment. Not even a half star deserved.

While visiting Seattle, I decided to settle on having dinner at Kells, a decent looking Irish pub just up a hill from the Pike Street Market that I had just explored. Kells is typical for a number of Irish pubs that I've dined or drank at in the past, with a dark, rich interior. However, it was a nice day outside, so I opted to sit outside and enjoy a sunny Seattle day. I ordered the Irish stew, which features lamb, carrots, onions and potato, plus it comes with a salad. The meal was satisfying and filling, but it didn't hit a home run in the taste department. Naturally, I washed down my meal with a beer as well. If I'm in the area, I may consider Kells again.

Food is great, music is great, atmosphere is great... But the true jewel of this place is the service. We had a waiter named Joe and not only did he seem to love his job, but people too! In a world where customer service has become almost non existent with increasing lack of social skills this place has kept that old fashioned feel of goodness! I highly recommend this place!

My return visit to Kells will probably be my last. If not for absolutely delicious food, I would be updating this to one star, but the food really is that good. I mean, this place is way too spendy, but I could excuse that. However, the service was so comically bad that I know now this is not the place for me. The server let us know from the moment we sat down that serving us was the last thing she was interested in. She refused to answer questions about the menu, brought the wrong drink for my friend, overcharged me after specifically asking what I wanted, and - the best part - chased us down Post Alley, yelling at us and demanding our signed credit card receipts - which we left inside the black folder like you do in EVERY RESTAURANT - so "she wouldn't have to pay." (Maybe she thought we'd sign the customer copy to give her a better tip? Does this work on people?) No thanks. All the yummy Irish food in the world would not make me want to deal with her again. Kells would do very well with a staff overhaul.

Horrible experience: We went for a late lunch. Waited for nearly 35min and still no food. No one stopped by to check in on us during this time. Then after this time, our waiter told us to pay up for our drinks and said someone else would be serving us. He didn't bring us a check. I'm guessing his shift was ending. We just assumed our food order was never placed. They definitely seemed adequately staffed.
