Absolutely my favourite restaurant of all time! Being vegan, finding good, unconcerning vegan food with alternative meats is a challenge. My favourites are the Tamarind and Peanut Sauce Noodles (Pad Thai but better, basically) and the Pineapple Curry with Soy Prawns. For cold rainy days, try the Beef Noodle Soup, it reminds me of ramen (but actually worth eating). I just wish they had one in Portland too...

Good food. Good, not great enough to warrant the attitude. We walked in, took a while to get seated and get waters. It wasn't even that full. The food itself was good. The menu promised a dessert with the entree. The dessert was a paltry slice of orange. REALLLLLY???? I'm ok not being given a free dessert but don't pass of a sad slice of orange as a dessert.

Let me tell you about how I became a regular here. When I found out about In The Bowl, I ate here once a week for almost three months straight. I'm not kidding. Yup, now I'm a regular! So, even though I'm not vegetarian, I freaking love the fake beef. Not sure how they do it, but it's delicious. After trying most of the menu (which isn't hard if you eat here as frequently as I do), my favorite is spicy green bean noodle with udon and fake beef, the chili paste rice a close second, and basil basil is third. The Tom Kha soup with soft tofu is so flavorful, it's my appetizer of choice along with the fresh spring rolls (which they are often out of, boo hoo). Don't let the appearance of this little hole in the wall fool you, or be deterred because it's a vegetarian restaurant. You won't miss the meat! Friends I bring here often say that the texture is spot on! I can tell the difference with most of it but the beef is pretty "meaty" IMO. Now this rice pudding dessert thing at the end. I've never gotten used to the flavor (blughghgh- no offense). It's salty and there's corn in it. I'm the last person to say "no" to dessert, but I can't seem to like it. I've tried eating it as is, stirring it, adding water (yes, the servers looked at me as if I was crazy), holding my breath and eating it, adding Thai iced tea to it, you name it. I just don't like it and always opt out so they don't waste it on me. I DO love when they give oranges as dessert in the summertime. Now that's a dessert I could get used to! Also, I should probably mention if you can't take the heat, don't order it. Five stars means like 7 and half. I'm not kidding. Staff, while nice, are pretty pushy. Turn around time is pretty important to them. Don't be offended if you get your bill with your food, it's how they do. Parking? What's that?! Oh, and the bathroom is like a jungle (fake animal noises and all), totally cracks me up! I love it!

One of the 1st places I came after moving to Seattle, not a bad way to start. A cute little veggie friendly Thai place that does a pretty good mix of everything asian. Its in a great location and the food is good so its worth a stop by. The long and short of it. 1. Panang Curry. Their curry is solid and it seems like everything is made with fresh ingrediants. What really stood out to me was actually the plating and presentation, which is kind of dumb but it tasted good as well so I can live with myself. Its good curry, Ill try other dishes next time. 2. Veggies! Everything here is vegetarian. The curry is vegetarian. The stir fry is vegetarian. The noodles are vegetarian. The servers may be made of veggies, I was too polite to bite one and check. 3. Size. The place is pretty tiny. Small enough where I can see it getting full up around lunch. Plan accordingly. 4. Portions. The portions are big, big enougfh to match the price. Unless you're on a quest to kill yourself via food consumption (see 80% of my life) you'll go home with leftovers. Not the worst thing in the world thats happened. 5. Price.Slightly more expensive than you're typical lunch spot. Closer to $15/meal than $10 6. List of things you should be aware of. - They dont take Amex - Its all vegetarian, find your meat elsewhere you peasant Pretty excited to live so close to this place..... you'll find me here often (I'll be the guy slouched in the corner nursing a food hangover). Theres plenty of veggie friendly places in Seattle, but this is a good one to add near the top of your list. Now if you'll excuse me, I hear the rest of some curry asking to be punished. Overall Grade: B+

June 2015 and it's been at least one year since my last visit here. A friend and I needed a recovery meal post a two-day festival at the Gorge Amphitheater. Whatever is currently lacking in this small restaurant's interior decor (ie- plain walls, lack of plants and cultural works of art) is being made up for in food quality and exciting vegetarian tastes. I had the beef noodle soup with wide rice noodles while my friend ordered a coconut curry noodle bowl. The owner has an interesting story as to why she had to remove the East Indian art and music from her place of business . Note: although there are meat items in the menu, this is vegetarian "meat", and it took me 3 visits to even realize it wasn't real meat.

Their garlic mania with veggie chicken and udon noodles was like an out of body experience. It was SO good. The veggies were crisp, the sauce super flavorful and the udon noodles probably the best I've ever had. This place did surprise me though both in its small size and the costs of the plates. As someone who's used to paying less than $10 per entree I was pretty shocked by the $12+ price tag on most these bowls. I can say though without certainty that these noodle bowls are so so worth it. Service was speedy and friendly, we enjoyed that you can watch your delicious noodles being poached and stir fried. Friends enjoyed the yakisoba and ginger udon noodles with the same level of "omg this amazing" as I had experienced. There so much more menu to try.

Well, for a gluten-free dairy free vegetarian, this hits the spot! I've had both the pad Thai and the tamarind peanut noodle...The tamarind peanut noodle wins for me! I'm slightly addicted to tamarind sauces, though, and I felt the pad Thai needed more flavor. I can't vouch for the "meat", but the tofu is gluten free. Everything else is off limits. It comes with a little dessert, I have no idea what it is, but it's like a hot, sweet pudding and topped with coconut cream I believe-they told me it was gf/dairy free. The Thai iced tea was pretty standard and they made it with coconut milk for us. For you GFers, only the pad Thai rice noodles and the tiny noodles are gluten free. They do have allergy menus that are helpful. Also, they seem to take their spice very seriously!

I like to support vegetarian/vegan places, so they get 3 stars just for that. I stopped by for a quick lunch and ordered an appetizer, tofu with peanut sauce and the mango with sticky rice. The tofu arrived with white stuff sprinkled on top which first appeared to be sugar, but I realized it was salt. Weird. The mango with sticky rice was very salty. I think both dishes would have been good, minus the salt. Rather pricey-more than $16 before the tip.

Well it said it was a noodle shop, so I was expecting something like ramen man but this place has so much more. I ordered duck soup and waitress made sure to let me know it wasn't real duck...duh I think I'm in a vegetarian place based on sign at door, right? Anyway, I got it with 2 stars and I have to say it was too seasoned/spicy from both salt and heat standpoint. Will try again but it wasn't love at first bite...

This place is great. Delicious vegetarian noodles and curry dishes. FYI, they have 1 high chair which is better than 0!

I ordered take-out for my boyfriend and me when we were nearby and completely famished. Like, hangry bear famished. We both got Phad Thai with tofu, one with 3 stars the other with 4. I'll start by saying that the service was sweet and the spiciness was well measured. However, we will not be coming back here again. The Phad Thai wasn't tangy, it was served with red onions and no peanuts, the tofu was chewy, and it was much too. It honestly did not taste like Phad Thai - it tasted like the Phad Thai you would get from the frozen food aisle. We were starving, are not picky eaters and we still didn't like it. If you're a Thai restaurant you need to at least be able to make good Phad Thai and good Phad Thai this place has not. There are tons of great Thai restaurants in Seattle with similar price points like Phayathai (Lake City) and Jamjuree (15th). Don't waste your money here, if you like Phad Thai.

Been here several times and I mostly remember it as excellent vegetarian south Asian food, even for meat lovers. But this most recent visit was honestly one of the worst restaurant outings in recent memory. The dragon balls were burnt and dry as if a real mf'ing dragon cooked them up for us. Then my dish, the coconut curry noodle, was the spiciest thing I've ever eaten despite asking for number 2 spicy. And don't chalk it up to white boy status. I've had my fair share of spicy foods and peppers. The cook was way off. Even after finishing, I assembled a pile of chili peppers out of the scraps. And then there was the music. On loop the entire time, was a short Indian sounding call and response chant. We wondered how long we would last in a prison with it playing on loop before ending the misery. We had it memorized by the end and couldn't stop torturing each other by singing it all night. I probably won't be back.

This place is in the top of the all vegetarian and vegan places I've ever eaten at. First time I came here I had Panang curry: it was great, but maybe just a little sweeter than I expected. My friend asked if they can make Rad Na- it's a Thai soup that I've never heard of. They made it especially for him and it was so delicious! It's like a thick stew made with fish and soy sauce, with their fake beef, wide noodles and veggies. Yum! I kept jealously staring at his plate over the whole dinner! With memories of Rad Na on my mind I stopped here to get it for a take out another time. It was ok, but not as great as when they made it first time. Everything just came together so well for that other one... Oh well.. I may still try to order it again. Also instead of fake beef that I had ordered they gave me fried tofu. And I don't like fried tofu. That's why they get 4 stars. Because they are just a little inconsistent. Last time I came here I got Melting Culture appetizer. It's Roti bread with curry dip. So good! And lemongrass rice dish that was good, but I wish it would be marinated together with other ingredients a little longer, so that the lemongrass and basil flavors could open up. If you are a new to a vegetarian dining I recommend getting a soft tofu as your protein option. Fried tofu has a dried out texture, whereas soft tofu has a nice silky and tender texture and can soak up a little of the sauces. Enjoy!

Imitation vegan food... I loved their ginger n asparagus curry with rice n spicy curry fried rice. And yes it was actually spicey! Surp! The chicken nuggets n spring rolls were very appetizing.Had rice pudding for dessert. The only fall back was Tokyo noodles. It surely wasn't bad.. Loved the teriyaki they had added. But it was not over all a unique dish. Would like to try more.

The food here is excellent. You wouldn't be able to tell its a vegetarian place if you didn't read about it or look at the shape of your "chicken. I have gone here a lot and one day took 2 friends visiting from out a town for a quick dinner. I didn't tell them it was vegetarian before we went or they would of tried to convince me to take them somewhere else. The spices and flavors of the meals are good. I tend to get the Eggplant curry.

So good!!! It's hard to find Asian restaurants that really understand that vegetarian does not just mean no chunks of meat, but it also means no fish sauce, no meat stock, etc. I have to admit the "chicken" is kinda meh, but the "beef" is awesome. I wish there were more locations because this one is usually pretty busy. Love it though!

We found this place as we were walking through Capitol Hill. It was busy about an hour before closing, but we were able to snag a seat for two near the kitchen. Talk about a hot seat! The flames from the nearby wok were definitely strong. As other reviewers have said, the menu is enormous. A lot sounded really good. The service was quick and efficient. Know what you want - no time to to wait! And, the menu features a lot of fake meat. I'm not the biggest fan of faux-meat (plus as the menu kindly indicated - it wasn't vegan). So, I opted for the Yakisoba noodles with tofu at a level 2 heat. That was spicy enough for me! Overall, I thought it was good, but nothing outstanding or remarkable, especially with the flavors. Perhaps if we return to Seattle, I'll try something different on the menu.

lunch food: duck noodles. you can pick a variety of noodles and i went with the fat flat noodles. not a bad choice, but i can see people who arent great with chopsticks may have a problem eating. the soup was so well flavored, it didnt feel like it was vegetarian. the "duck" was decent. it has a taste that i didnt particularly like, but doable. i drank all the soup. it was that good. plus it comes with a free dessert! free for the win. it was a red bean...pudding? with coconut milk. sooo good ***5/5 service: its a small place so it was easy to grab the server's attention. it was an easy in and out. ***4/5 value: surprisingly filling meal. that soup though. i think i couldve had another bowl of it. it is a bit pricey though for a bowl of noodles. but i think the soup is so full packed of flavor that it may justify the price. ***4/5

The food is ok, I feel the service could be better. I am always rushed and I feel my children are not given the same service as in other places. I think the noodle bowls are not balanced in flavor. Some are too sweet and some are just lacking flavor. I had an eggplant salad, it was ok. I Felt I paid a lot for it and really it did not have much eggplant, just fillers like salad and snap peas. I think they have potential to do better if they treat customers better. If you want a good vegan asian restaurant, dont go here, GO TO TEAPOT RESTAURANT IN REDMOND, they have superior service and better food. All said, it is pretty cool to have a vegan asian noodle option in town.

After walking by this joint countless times en route to Kedai Makan, I finally decided to give it a shot when a noodle craving hit. Ravenous at barely 5pm, we were welcomed by an enthusiastic cohort in an empty restaurant. It's an interesting little place with a bare bones interior, but paintings and idols of Hindu gods and goddesses adorn the entire space. The menu is absolutely massive. Seriously, you have 50+ items to choose from--I swear I'm not kidding. After much deliberation (and, admittedly, some Yelp consultation), I ordered the garlic mania noodles, and my boyfriend went with the cashew nut and pineapple fried rice. His dish was definitely far superior to mine. My noodles were very garlicky (which was great), but super oily and lacking in any flavour apart from the garlic and tinge of spice. The fried rice, on the other hand, was spicy, extremely flavourful, and absolutely delicious. They give you a little red bean dessert for free, which was certainly a nice gesture. The portions are also quite big for about $10 a dish. I might come back again on the fried rice's merit, but I'll be avoiding the garlic mania henceforth.

I came here because of the great reviews. My friend and I were both disappointed with our meals. I ordered the ginger stir fry with "chicken", which had the consistency of canned meat. I would recommend getting the tofu instead of the imitation meat (or at least don't order the chicken). He had the pad thai with tofu and also thought it was just okay. The food was alright, just bland and expensive for what it was. I'm also not sure why this place is listed as $, unless because it tastes like cheap Asian food and people forget what they actually paid.

  • Zechariah H.

The food was ok. It is really cramped and the servers acted like they were doing you a favor to wait on you. For a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, they didn't seem to have a grasp of what vegan was and weren't very helpful in recommending what to eat. It's very centrally located and is definitely worth checking out. Our server didn't get our order right, and seemed put off over having to fix it. So, enjoy, but be careful and specific!

Wasn't overly impressed with In The Bowl. It's an OK restaurant in my opinion. Not being a vegetarian I don't mind their soy product offerings and can appreciate their vast menu. What I didn't care for was the overall prices for what you receive and in my opinion, the quality. My spicy coconut curry noodles I opted for no "meat" or tofu. Just veggies. Still cost the same and didn't feel any extra veggies were added. I did pay a extra couple bucks to get the udon noodles which were indeed fantastic. The dish wasn't overly spicy but I felt it didn't have a very strong overall flavor. It was a decent meal all in all. The thai iced tea was good and not overly sweet. The take out portion was enough but didn't seem like much. After paying over $17 for noodles and a drink I'm not sure that I will be back any time soon.

I knew this place was good when my meat-eating boyfriend ate all the food with relish! He normally complains if its all vegetarian but he didn't even complain once during the meal - this is definitely a good way for meat-eaters to try an all vegan restaurant. We tried the Yakisoba noodles and the Pineapple fried rice - both were amazing. The Yakisoba is one of the best I have ever had and will definitely be the reason why I eat at "In the Bowl" again. They ended the whole dinner with an unnamed dessert. It was a mixture of red, bean paste and coconut milk. It was AMAZING! I was sad when I finished it because I couldn't have any more (not joking here). I am giving this place 4 stars because the customer service is not great. Like the other reviewers mentioned, the wait staff act like they are doing you a favor by serving you.

I can't even count how many trips we've made to Seattle, just to eat here. And like, if we stay over night, we'll go for lunch and dinner both days. It's so delicious. I usually like the duck for the 'meat' option, and anything I've eaten on the menu I've found pretty darn good. The peanut sauce is probably my favourite. My one and only complaint would be that they don't control the spicy ness level very well. I don't like a whole lot of heat in my food because it sometimes overpowers the flavour with , well, burning. I've ordered before, asking for no spicy ness, and it was WAY too hot for me to eat. They're not always the friendliest, in regards to chit chat and smiles, but they aren't rude or mean either, their just usually pretty packed in there. PS, you MUST check out the bathroom, lol... It's like a little bit of paradise... I end up in there longer than I need to be, just taking in the plants and listening to the nature music playing, ha...

I recently became a vegetarian and feel so lucky to have discovered this little treasure. The food was delicious ( I had the Panang curry) and the serve was very kind. It was a little more than I am use to spending in a meal, but enjoyed it very much and I am looking forward to going again.

I was suspicious. THIS is the place that had all those great ratings?? Bright. Cramped. Only about 4 people in there at 630 on a Friday. I had a pumpkin curry, which was the special that night (as if the massive menu needed more choices). They were out of "duck", so I got "prawn". OUTSTANDING. Lots of fresh veggies. Excellent flavor. Nice color. The only quibble I had was that it was pretty dang hot for "medium", Maybe my spice tolerance isn't what it used to be.

Being vegan, the bf and I hunted for some good vegan food while on a recent trip to Seattle. In the Bowl did not disappoint. I had the Garlic Mania Noodles and the bf had the Spicy Noodles. Both were delicious and flavorful. I'm only sad we didn't get to come back before we headed back to la.

Yum!! This place is surprisingly good and the food comes out super fast. Get the spicy noodles!! A great place to dine in or get take out from. The dessert at the end was a surprise. It wasn't cold like I expected but warm. It was a great way to end my meal. Surprisingly good for a vegetarian place!

After coming here again, I'm going to have to up my rating. There's not a lot of Asian food on the Hill so I headed here with my parents. I remembered how much I liked the curry last time so I got the special which was a coconut curry. I decided to try it with the "chicken." My dad got the cashew and pineapple fried rice with tofu and my mom got the garlic noodles with tofu based on the waitress' recommendation. So the garlic noodles were a fail. I don't know why she recommended it because it was such a throwaway dish. The presentation was also unattractive and the portion smaller than the others. However, the other two dishes were SO delicious. My dad's rice smelled and tasted so good. I don't usually like nuts in my rice but this was so yummy and he loved it. I loved the curry again. It didn't taste very coconut-y which kind of annoyed me because it cost more than the other curries but its seriously some of the best curry I've had. I love it with the vermicelli and there's always enough for another meal! The chicken was also quite good. My dad liked it as well. I know this is going to quickly become one of my new less expensive spots on the Hill!

This is a staple for us, and after four years of patronage, I still crave the panang curry nearly weekly. I've found the food at the restaurant is better than the takeout, but the takeout is still better than most vegetarian Thai takeout in Seattle. The curries are the best in my opinion, closely followed by the fried rice dishes. The restaurant itself is cramped, bright, and loud, but in my opinion the food more than makes up for it.

Pretty yummy for a vegetarian place! I only say this because I literally had no idea what I was in store for, but it was a pleasant surprise. I shared the "Ful-filled your dreams", which is deep fried vegan wonton wrappers with fake meat and tofu cream cheese, and the tofu Phad See Ew with a friend. I really don't remember the last time I had fake meat but the wonton wrappers were quite good! Especially with the sweet and sour chili sauce. Yum. The filling inside was a bit questionable but hey, what is fake meat really? The Phad See Ew was probably one of my favorites I've had at a thai restaurant for a while now. I only wish they would've added an egg. Perfect and yummy noodles with the broccoli and carrots. Only thing that sucks is the parking in that area. Literally took me forevas to find parking.

  • Borith K.

Amazing vegan/vegetarian food. Be aware though that the soy meats aren't vegan, just vegetarian. Anyways, the menu is so vast that I struggle whenever I order lol. I normally just go with the tom yum noodle soup with rice noodles. Absolutely amazing. The restaurant itself is pretty tiny but is good for those who like fast and easy meals. I'll be in and out in probably less than 25 minutes. They also offer a free delicious red bean, coconut milk, and corn dessert at the end of your meal. Parking kinda sucks.. But I heard that they do validate parking. Definitely recommended for both vegetarians and meat eaters!!

Yum. I LOVE noodles. If I had to choose one food to eat for the rest of my life it would be noodles. So this was a must for me to try. So they let you pick your own noodle style, omg I'm in heaven, and I was happy to see they had wide noodles. I ordered the Ginger Noodle dish and really enjoyed it. My husband ordered the Pad Thai with wide noodles as well, but was a bit confused because it didn't really taste like pad thai to him. I believe we both ordered medium spicy, which was decently spicy. I will definitely go again if I'm in the area and try something new as the varieties of how to consume noodles here seems endless. My only complaint is that they really need to dust the place, badly. We were sitting right by the statues and were kinda grossed out by the 2 inch thick dust on them. Not really a great way to built up an appetite.

Noms! This place has generous portions and is a vegan/vegetarian's paradise! Note to future diners: all their "meat" dishes are actually fake meat dishes! (I didn't know and just ordered the tofu to be safe :)). Had the spicy coconut milk noodle with yakisoba noodles - yum! My friend ordered the thai peanut sauce noodles, which was also good, but her noodles were just a-ok (she ordered it with the wide noodles). Tip: order the Melting Culture as an appetizer to share - the roti is hot, crispy, & fresh and the coconut milk with "chicken" that you dip the roti in... mmmm, mmm, mmmmm!

This place is the definition of an amazing "hole in the wall" place. It doesn't look like much but it's the best thai food I've ever had.
