First time having lunch at Homegrown. The girl who took my order was super cute and friendly, and our food came out fast! The atmosphere of the market completes the whole experience. I HIGHLY recommend. P.S....the chips are BOMB!

Here in Seattle on business, stopped by to grab a sammie for lunch to-go. Service was quick, sammie very very delicious. I had the turkey, bacon and avocado. They have half portions for people like me who prefer not to consume an entire sandwich. The half order is plenty enough. Work was busy so I couldn't eat it fresh, nor could I finish it in one sitting but even after it cooled down it was beyond yummy. Turkey, bacon, avocado and wheat bread combined to make a party in my mouth. Sometimes a good sammie can be hard to manage. This one did not fall apart, and I enjoyed a little bit of each ingredient with every bite. I can only imagine how much more I would have enjoyed had I had a straight go at it. I read up on their philosophy while I waited for my order. Homegrown prides themselves on organic and sustainable products. They believe in sustainability so much that they do not sell bottled water. Made me feel a little guilty for the bottle of smart water I held in my hands. Good for them though, and that's for real. I would recommend Homegrown to anyone who can appreciate a good sandwich.

I'm a hardcore Weston A Price/Paleo diet person and I like Homegrown because I can actually eat out someplace that's more or less in line with my food politics. Granted they use polyunsaturated oils in place of my preferred monosaturated and saturated fats, but as far as eating out goes you have to make some allowances in some places. Overall the local/sustainable/organic meat outweighs a minor dose of polyunsaturates. Oh yeah and the food is tasty :D My favorite is to get the Roast Pork Sandwich as a Salad (I don't do grains cuz of Paleo). You get a heaping pile of delicious local pastured pork and all the fixins on top of a bed of greens. I get the aioli and apple butter on the side, along with the lavender vinaigrette. They'll pretty much do any sandwich as a salad and are super nice about it. Yeah they are pricey but that's because the prices we are used to are artificially low due to unsustainable factory farming practices.. so while you don't pay the cost in money up front, your body pays the price down the road. I am happy to spend $10 on a salad with decently grown ingredients in it that are local/organic/sustainable and better for my body than factory farmed options.

Well bummer. A year ago when this place opened it was really good. I think it's been steadily going down hill but has stayed adequate, if expensive. But today we went in to find a whole new ordering format and our two favorite sandwiches off the menu ( he crab cake and the cat fish). We decided to stay anyway and had avocado, turkey and bacon sandwiches that skimped on the turkey, had only partially melted cheese, and wost of all - un-ripe avocado. Soup, salad and white bean salad were flavorless and thrown together. We won't be back. I don't know who decided on the recent changes - they are not good.

The Food: The Reuben Revised is amazing - truly amazing. After 1 bite I regretted not having ordered the large. The red wine kraut really adds to the sandwich. The creamy artichoke soup was not as creamy as I expected, but it did have a nice kick to it. The Staff: They can take an order and get it right. They're not rude or mean, but there is something missing. Verdict: Great food served by people who won't deter you from going back for more.

The sandwiches are great ! The fries are a bit different, but good. I usually got the Californian. The manager Jeff is a real nice guy and the supporting staff is money ! -Mike the Senator

The food here was delicious. One of the best sandwiches we've had in a while. We also enjoyed how friendly and helpful the staff was. Can't wait til we come back to Seattle, we'll be sure to come back here again

Fries are the bomb. Multigrain bread is the awesomesauce. Sage aioli - need moar! I pretty much love this place. It's located in a ridiculously cute market that feels like something you'd see in Portland more so than Seattle. Plus they're big on local sourcing along with sustainability. That's a big plus for sure. One thing that really stands out for me is that I'm a huge eater (over-eater that is) but getting the small sandwiches is still more than enough for me. I'd be scared to see how big a large is! I'd still eat it anyway... heh.

Blech. Not worth the money. I got the veggie, expecting something with a lot of flavor on really yummy bread...nope. The bread was smooshed and kinda soggy, the avocado was brown (which is a SERIOUS turn off for me) and the whole damn thing just looked kind of haphazardly thrown together. The only thing giving this place 3 and not 1 is that the hummus was pretty good and we got to sit outside in the sun. Will not be back, it's a shame b/c I love the philosophy.

Decent veggie sandwiches and fries at this location today. A few months back I had a small (given the price), bland grilled cheese and soup that was mediocre at their Fremont location. As another reviewer stated, I think they are hit and miss - sadly their prices reflect an establishment that is always hit. It is too bad that a sandwich joint in this building wouldn't utilize the Calf & Kid cheese and meat vendor right next door to them. Wouldn't it make sense for all of the businesses in the building to compliment one another? I am sure it is because they have other locations and already formed a partnership with Beecher's and Zoe's - but still I found it strange given their stance on sustainability.

We really enjoyed the sandwiches: turkey avocado and Porkbelly and felt they were fine value for money (especially considering the care and thought in sourcing the products) The only disappointment were the fries. We saw them on a different persons tray, and they looked GREAT. once they arrived, they were a bit wilted and were just OK. :(

Not only does Homegrown offer delicious, healthy ingredients in all of their sandwiches, but they are also one of the few places sensible enough to offer gluten free bread! Because of this, I am finally able to share a delicious sandwich with my wife instead of having to go somewhere on my own. I've been here a couple times now and have sampled four sandwiches; all of them were delicious but my favorite so far is the Reuben Revisited. The menu is pretty small but contains a wide variety of flavors to grace your palette. There are also a few sides to choose from, including chips, epic cookies (one of which is also gluten free!) and fries. They also serve Stumptown drip to meet your fix. The only drawback here is that the prices can get a bit costly with a half-sized sandwich being about $6 and a full-sized one ringing in at $10. It should be noted that the smaller sandwiches are still enough to act as a decent portion and are well worth their cost in my opinion. Despite the high cost of a full-sized sandwich, the eco-friendly ingredients and gluten free options place Homegrown firmly near the top of my favorite places for a sandwich in Seattle. You should go out of your way for this place if you haven't yet!

As I had hoped, the second time around was da bomb. Smiles everywhere, the service this time was on par with the incredibly tasty food. Meatloaf sandwich was inventive and quirky and satisfying. The curry carrot soup was surprisingly well seasoned.

I used to love this place. The first time I ate at their Fremont location, I was smitten. The capital hill franchise (closer to where I live) has never seemed to catch its stride. Here are a couple of thoughts about this branch: 1. The high-table seating is really cold/impersonal. I would bet more people would eat there, order the beer, etc, if there was more low-to-the-ground, comfy seating. 2. WHY DID YOU GET RID OF THE FRIES?? Those were possibly the best item on the menu. I swooned over the fennel seasoning. I asked the girl behind the counter why they got rid of them, and she said it was because the deep fryer was slowing them down too much. Huh? 3. The sandwiches have gotten smaller and smaller. I actually like the potato bread, but the size of the actual bread is not as big as the little square on the sign they show you. I feel kind of cheated when I pay $6.50 for a grilled cheese that is the size of a hockey puck. 4. The customer service, as with most in this region, is terrible. The people behind the counter are always doing something else when I walk in and give me a can't-be-bothered attitude when I want to order. They are the ones that are responsible for all the "imbalances" in the sandwiches that many users comment on. The recipes are great. The execution could really be improved. I don't want to have to wear a bib to catch the mayo (even if it is the most amazing mayo I have tasted). Ok, I am done! :)

I've passed by this location a few times, but never had the chance to eat until last weekend. This site has many different specialites like wine, cheese, and meat. The sandwich shop hit a grand slam in my books. I ordered the Flank Steak Sandwich: flank steak, baby portabello, caramelized onions, bleu cheese mousse, chimichurri and mixed greens toasted on country french or whole grain all for 9.95. The flank steak was very tender and the chimichurri played well with the entire combination. On the side, I ordered the French Fries with toasted fennel and herbs, served with sage aioli 4.50. These were probably the best french fries I've had since moving to Seattle. They were nice and crispy and the herb blend complimented the sandwich. The ambiance of this place is great. People connecting with their food and staying true to local agriculture. I will bring all of my guests to this place.

Kind of spendy, but it's good food you'll feel good about eating. Huge sandwches, super tasty fries. Love the little market they are in, it's fun to peruse the meat shop and cheese shop in the neighboring stalls as your sandwich is being made. From South Lake Union, near REI, I can always get a group to walk to Homegrown for their amazing sammiches.

I like this place. A lot. I was in Seattle for a conference, and I found myself gravitating to Homegrown for a quick bite to eat. Let me warn you, for sandwiches, this shiz is expensive. I easily spent $15 with only a large sandwich and a drink. For a dude, a large sandwich at Homegrown pretty much equals a regular sandwich. I'm all for the local/organic/sustainable vibe this place has going on. But, aside from that, they have great sandwiches. I had the hummus/red pepper sandwich and then I also had the Reuben Revisited. The Reuben definitely wins the match between the two, but the sandwiches are pretty well done, flavorful, and a good meal. I also the fries, but the aioli definitely made the difference. This place is right inside Melrose Market, which I'm a fan of. But, it can get crowded during rush.

This place is terrible. The service is bad, and the kitchen is often understaffed. I've had to wait almost an hour *for a sandwich*. The flavors are all out of balance, mostly erring on the side of being far too sweet (think: caked on jams and marmalades on a sandwich that's supposed to be largely savory). The bread they use now (since they changed their menu) is thick and mealy and negates the one advantage they have: a flat top that could theoretically crisp up the bread. Almost every experience I've had here has been remarkably disappointing. I really wanted this place to succeed, so I wrote them this email soon after they opened. One of the owners (Ben) responded very politely and with good intentions, but things only got worse in the months that followed. The email follows. I just ate at your Capitol Hill location. I live around the corner. I have gone to Baguette Box probably 3-4 times a week for the past few years since I do freelance work on the hill. I was excited to see a new sandwich shop open up, and I went there a few times after opening--sometimes alone, sometimes with friends. I have to say that we found most of the sandwiches very bland; there was a lack of balance, and they were underseasoned. The one consistently good item I had was the steak sandwich which now appears to be gone from the menu. We didn't go back for a month, then we tried it again, waited another month, etc. It's a great location, so it's hard not to return occasionally, but I would come 10 times more often (I mean that literally) if there was consistently good food. I expect that the consistency is probably a problem for a lot of would-be regulars. But I don't necessarily blame your recipes. It's clear that some of the components of the sandwiches are very lovingly prepared. The main problem I have is the apathy of the people working behind the counter. They don't care about the food. Today, they didn't even care about going through the motions. When I arrived at 5:30pm, a disgruntled looking man was sitting, staring at the ground with headphones in, and there was a woman sitting on the counter reading a book. I stood there for 20 seconds before venturing "You guys open?" The guy took out his headphones and came over and took my order with this freaking angry grimace on his face like he wanted to break something... or break a lot of things. He didn't make eye contact, took my order, gave me change, and took my name (which is James, but in the apathy of writing it became "Jamie" by the time my sandwich was up). I ordered the Reuben--when your Reuben-esque sandwich is prepared well, it's really tasty. Today it came cold in the center, with an excessively thick layer of mostarda that overwhelmed the sandwich with sweetness (when there's the right amount--I love the balance of sweet and salty). Since the bread wasn't toasted, the mostarda immediately started to make it soggy. So I was left eating a soggy, luke-warm sandwich that tasted mostly like jam on untoasted bread. I don't think you would blame me for waiting another couple of months before returning. I just thought you might like to know.

I felt like I earned my hipster cred for the day by eating at Homegrown. A chart near the counter lists the various sandwich components (bread, meats, cheeses, veggies, etc.) with check boxes to indicate what combination of local, organic, and sustainable they are. The shop is in a large, open building with several other local/organic/sustainable businesses: a meat counter, a cheese shop (the Calf and Kid), a wine store, a shop selling handmade items like soaps and candles, etc. I bought two "small"-size sandwiches for variety. Both the turkey, avocado, bacon sandwich and the beet and goat cheese sandwich were great. I preferred the latter, for its juiciness and goat cheesy-ness, but the combination of the melted gouda with the avocado was amazing in its own right. The "small" sandwiches were actually quite substantial to me; worth their $6-7 price. A large sandwich will set you back ~$11, though. They serve breakfast, too!

I decided to give Homegrown a shot since the menu sounded interesting and me and sandwiches have a very special relationship. I ordered myself the only on the menu for the current season Ham and swiss, with sage aioli and roasted brussel sprouts. It was rather delightful. I think though I would ask next time for no aioli as it was a tad oozy, which I am not a fan of that. The ham was not just some deli slice bidness, but slices cut from a ham. With a knife. Like at Easter or something. This is the sandwich you would make at home if you had the time to you know, roast a ham, bake the bread, make some aioli - you get the picture. I ordered my boyfriend the 10 dollar meatloaf sandwich. Oy. 10 dollar sandwiches are like white people magnets. FACT. Anyway, he dug it and said it was good but after he had a bite of mine, he was like "I wish you had ordered me the ham sandwich instead." I told him, "Suck it and eat your 10 dollar sandwich." (I am nice like that.) I also ordered the fries which were good, but needed some more salt. The herbs and fresh cut potato flavor was for sure there but they just lacked that saltiness you expect from a good fry. I would order the fries again (the portion is big enough to split FYI) but just add a pinch of some kosher salt. Verdict is? I would go back here and try out some more sandwiches but not all the time since it is a bit scratch heavy - I enjoy spending money but 30 dollar lunches every week is a bit much, you know. I am curious what they will have on the menu for spring though... Yay for so many local/sustainable places to nom at in Seattle. Makes me happy.

Gluten Free Options: A tasty bread, clearly labeled soups, and Skydottir Cookies. Win! Vegan Options: Yes! OMG. This place is a party in my mouth. Seriously. I dropped in during a recent visit to Seattle, and I kind of wish that I could magically teleport this place back home so I could eat there every.single.day . I'm always cautious when trying a new place, as I have a pretty restricted diet, but they put together one of the tastiest gluten-free, dairy-free, nightshade-free, meaty sandwiches I've ever tasted. And! I got to taste Skydottir Cookies, which are both gf and vegan - and probably the best cookies I've ever had. I want them. Regularly. Their products are primarily locally sourced, organic and sustainable, which is huge in my book. Definitely worth the money, and I'll be back the next time I'm in Seattle.

I've been anxiously awaiting the opening of Homegrown Capitol Hill for a while now. The prospect of a great sandwich shop right down the hill from my place was an exciting prospect! Today I made it there for lunch. My first impression: meh. I ordered the Turkey, Bacon, Avocado sandwich for $9.95. For $9.95 the sandwich comes with a pickle, and for an extra $1.00 you can get chips instead of the pickle. The service was friendly, and the sandwich was good. Not great, but good. About what you'd expect from a sandwich shop. My major complaint is the price. Maybe I'm just cheap, but I feel like $9.95 is a lot to pay for a sandwich at what's, basically, a lunch counter. If I wanted chips and a drink, I'd easily be looking at spending $14 or more on lunch. That's just crazy. For that kind of money, I feel like you'd be better off going someplace with table service, and more spacious seating.

I went into Homegrown the other night and there was a darling young girl with brown hair that made my sandwich. I've never been there so I asked the group that was working what I should get. She made me up a special sandwich with turkey, avocado, and sprouts. This sandwich was the most amazing thing I think I've ever had in my life. I have been to homegrown twice since that night. The hours are awesome! I can go there late nights when Im craving a sandwich or early afternoon. Best place to eat in Capitol hill! :D Good job, guys!

After raving and ranting about honey hole to anyone that would care to listen, I was told I MUST try homegrown's sandwiches. I tried the roast pork sandwich and I could definitely taste the namesake. The fries were a perfect compliment, and that dipping sauce was addictive! Washing it all down with a hot lips boysenberry drank that had me feeling like I was back at my grandpa's old farm sucking down on boysenberries. The service here was so friendly and nice! Although honey hole is my go-to sandwich spot in capital hill, I must definitely come back to try more!

Slow service - 35 minutes to get breakfast when there's no queue? Hope the food is good for that kind of wait. Other customers seem to be waiting as well. Food is an organic, somewhat eclectic mix. Sandwiches include catfish po'boy, crab cake, grilled steak salad. I'm trying a more traditional turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich-if it ever gets here. Even was able to run out and get Coffee at Bauhaus and my order still wasn't ready. I did, subsequently, learn that one of their cooks was running super late. Maybe they could let us know when we ordered so we could keep our expectations in check. Or have the order guy serve us some coffee on the house while we wait? I dunno, but you don't often get to make first impressions.

I'm glad the place next door wasn't open because this place was a pleasant surprise. I loved my breakfast sandwich (Avocado, egg and gouda cheese). It tasted so good and fresh. They also serve Stumptown coffee which was a huge plus for me.

Wow, finally another sandwich place to give the Baguette Box a run for its money. Delicious! Not cheap, but worth the extra dollars. Perfect texture, strong and well-matched flavors, tasty meats. (Plus good veg options...) Besides the great food, you can shop for frou-frou meat and cheese at the Melrose Market while you're there!

So today for lunch, I stopped in on a whim, and got THE BEST SANDWICH I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. Ham and swiss on whole grain bread with Brussels sprouts, apples, sage aioli and some tangy-ass dijon. Yum. All of the ingredients were really fresh and really flavorful, and lunch left me happy for the rest of the day. I would give this place 5 stars, except that I just paid $9 for the aforemetioned sandwich. I know that the schpeil is that all of the ingredients were local and organic and sustainable, and that Homegrown is in a co-op of other such local businesses (the Melrose Market is an amazing space, btw), and I understand that these facts mean that there is going to be a premium on my sandwich, but $9?! So 4 stars it is, and Homegrown will likely be an occasional treat rather than a regular lunch spot. Though I would like to try their breakfast sandwiches...

  • Mike C.

First things first. Fantastic sandwiches! In addition to the great food, they have locally sourced non-standard sodas which I find interesting and appealing. The location is very cool too. Coming to homegrown was the first time I'd seen it, but it's an older building with a butcher and a cheese shop among other small local businesses. From what I hear, Rain Shadow Meats is something to be experienced as well. I'll pick up a steak on my next visit to Homegrown. The only reason I can't give this place a 5 star rating is the price. If they could find a way to shave a dollar or two off of each sandwich they would really get sick of me stopping by every day.

  • Bri E.

Very delicious organic sandwiches. Usually fast service, and always very pleasant. The sandwiches are a bit pricey, but for this quality I think they are totally worth the splurge. My favorite is their pickles! super sour and the perfect addition to any sandwich.

  • Michael E.

I call this whole space "the wedge" cause it's the delicious little collection of places, there's Homegrown, of course, cheese shops, meat, wine bar, Sitka... The best way to sort it all out is to go and get a wonderful homegrown sandwich and wander about while they make it up. Ugh, they're all so good. I like a hot sandwich but wow, never had a bad one! Just all such goodness!

  • Jason H.

The oatmeal was luke warm cold when it was served. The lamb breakfast sandwich was fine but no wow factor that justified the high price point. You can make local food that tastes blah - these guys prove the point. Starbucks breakfast sandwiches are better and cost a lot less!

I live a few blocks away...so I get to go to Home Grown quite a bit. I absolutely LOVE the Melrose Market. A bit of Pike Place right on Capitol Hill...pretty awesome if you ask me. Okay so Home Grown....food is pretty damn good most of the time. Sometimes their lettuce is not so fresh...(spoiled pieces mixed in) and their prices are really high for what you get. But who can beat the ambiance and the fact that everything there is green and sustainable? The last few times I've gone in the afternoon they've been out of eggs...which is annoying since I don't eat meat and like to add an egg to my sandwiches. The girl who works the register isn't the friendliest either. Which definitely hinders the tip jar. All in all, nice lunch spot.

I dont' know why I'm not giving it 5 stars. Maybe it's cuz I'm a people person, and I wasn't blown away by this place. It just doesn't satisfy that UMPH/Ahh yes! feeling. SERVICE: I mean, you go up to them and order and wait for your name to be called. So there isn't much service. The people behind the counter are chillin. FOOD: *TBA (Turkey Bacon Avocado) - It's a warm sandwich! (I expected it to be cold). I love avocado - can't go wrong. I normally am not a huge turkey fan - didn't mind it on this on. I don't care too much for bacon in my sandwiches, especially when they're too crispy (I know, call me crazy) - but the bacon was soft and pretty good! I got it on MultiGrain Wheat bread - pretty good. Makes you feel good about what you're eating - in a good, satisfying way (not a - yes, this is perfect cuz I'm on a diet - way) - so it's good tasting food. :P *Roast Pork - I saw a review say that they ordered this and it was well worth the wait. It was a cold sandwich (I expected it to be hot ahahah). And I wasn't blown away by it. It was too sweet for me - I mean, what do you expect from apple butter - but still. Something about it reminded me of Christmas. That Christmas seasoning - maybe it was just the apple butter. *shrugs* *Paprika Mushroom Soup - We ordered cream broccoli, but we tasted this soup and thought it was pretty good so we didn't go back and tell them about the misplaced order. It complemented the sandwiches really well! Maybe that's a general thing with soups and sandwiches - but this really hit the spot. Wasn't spicy. A hint of creaminess that I appreciated. NEXT TIME: I'm totally going back. And I want to try EVERYTHING ELSE. The Reuben, the Ham & Breecher (cheese from pike's place's breecher!), Seasonal Squash (vegan)....Everything sounds so good. and I shall update or write another review on them ahahahah SPACE: Not a lot of seating. Several 2-seaters outside - but it was directly in the sun. Like 2 or 3 tables inside - but often occupied. This little island-ish seating where you can sit alone or side-by-side with other people, but not facing them. And then there is other seating - but it's for other eateries in that little marketplace-ish setting so you probably shouldn't sit there.

Breakfast sandwiches! Even if you are a person who doesn't believe in breakfast, or isn't normally up until the crack of early afternoon, set your alarm and get into Homegrown from 8-11am for the most delicious breakfast sandwich. For $6 you get fried egg, cheese, bacon (real, thick, crisp, perfect bacon) and aioli on a toasted sesame roll. And if that wasn't enough, you get a generous portion of oatmeal smothered in brown sugar that melts to gooey delicious perfection. Did I mention only $6? And for you non-bacon lovers, they have versions with lamb sausage or avocado. For the rest of the day I've had amazing soups, chili, and an assortment of their regular sandwiches. All of them have delicious ingredients and taste as good, if not better, than they look. They also have seasonal specials and salads, as well as combos you can build. They now also have a late night menu featuring, you guessed it, breakfast sandwiches! They also have a deep fried version of their bluffernutter (that's bacon, marshmallow fluff, and peanut butter) with optional raspberry dipping sauce. A great place to go after a fun night. Overall a fantastic place anytime of day with cute outdoor seating when the weather is cooperating.

If you are a foodie or a hippie, you'll love this place for its sustainable practices. But mostly, you'll love how freaking delicious it is! For breakfast on the go, you can't really beat this place on the hill. Your sandwich comes with a hearty bowl of oatmeal. That is, if you're able to slow down for 5 minutes as they make your sandwich for order. It can get pretty crowded around here for lunch and tricky to find a place to park on Melrose or Minor. You might have to wait in a line. And when you get to the front, you might feel pressured to figure out which sandwich is the perfect sandwich for the moment. I kind of wish I could order a sandwich without getting a free pickle. I usually toss it out, anyway. Meatloaf BLT is a good choice for rainy days. I think there was a bit of jalapeno pepper in it? But only enough to give it a little kick. Roast Beef is great on those random hot days. Grilled Cheeses are for vegetarians and vegans should just stay away. In general.

Great tasting sandwich and friendly & fast service. Had the portobello and goat cheese, looking forward to trying others the next time I'm back in Seattle. The only downside is that the sandwiches are a bit pricey.

My sandwich (crab cake, bacon, avocado) was tasty. Very nice roll, tasty sauce. And the hand-cooked chips were some of the best I've had. I admire the focus on local and sustainable (although most of the meats the day I ate there were not organic). What's wrong with grass-fed beef guys? The price was a little steep. I shop at the farmer's market week in week out and for the kinds of things that go on sandwiches, and the bread itself, the prices are not that much more than the grocery store if you choose seasonally. Presumably the owners have access to this stuff in bulk too, so I do find the prices a little high. I would come back here, but I since I walk past numerous cafes and restaurants to get there, it might be difficult to make it past the competition.

Mouthwatering goodness...... This place is a must try if you looove sandwiches. The day I came here I forgot my debit card, luckily I had some cash in my pocket :( But didn't get all i wanted) We tried the Crab Cake, Bacon + Avocado sammy w/ the fennel and herbs fries.Yum and the sage aioli was the best here! This one is pretty small because it is in a small corner in Melrose Market so service will be okay. Everyone is friendly and if u need something they are always happy to help!

Just had lunch here, and it was pretty tasty! Nutritious and satisfying, but not overly filling. I had the combo with a pot roast sandwich (seasonal item) and butternut squash soup. The bread was both crusty and chewy, and the pot roast hit the spot. The soup was not as creamy and thick as most butternut squash soups, and there was quite a bit of bite to it from the generous use of black pepper -- but I loved it. My husband had the pork sandwich. he liked it, but there was a nutty to it that didn't appeal to me. In general, it's a great sandwich place, and I wish there were more places like this in Seattle.

I stopped in on a Thursday afternoon to explore Melrose Market, since a few new places have opened since my last visit. There was a decent-sized crowd at Homegrown, but there were a few vacant seats and the line was moving well enough, so I stayed. I ordered a half-sandwich and cup of soup combo. I've seen a lot of grumbling in other reviews about prices, but this my half turkey/bacon/avocado sandwich was as big as some other places whole sandwiches! Not to mention how delicious it was: toasted bread, gooey melted cheese, a generous helping of both nicely crispy bacon and perfectly ripe avocado. I'd definitely order this one again. I'm not sure what was up with my soup -- I ordered baked potato, and either I got the split pea by mistake or it was a different type of baked potato soup than I've ever had before. It tasted like split pea, but I was hungry and impatient, so I didn't complain. It was still good, if not baked potato-y. :) Parking is kind of a pain, but that's normal for Capitol Hill. I won't let it stop me from a repeat visit... I have to try that Bluffernutter!

Good sandwiches. Beet salad was top notch. A bit over done on the citrus spread on me of the sandwiches

Roasted squash and snap pea pesto sandwich hit the spot. This quaint, little sandwich shop is a delicious spot for the healthy minded. Enjoy!

First off, this sandwich stand is located in an unbelievably cool warehouse-ish space, with other small, culinary shops. The atmosphere is "Hipster meets European marketplace" because of the exquisite and tantalizing meats, cheeses, breads and wines for sale at the various stands run by (you guessed it) young, sophisticated hipsters. There is an energy in the place, a common purpose and goal: to provide fresh foods that have been prepared with mother nature's interest at heart. All the perishables for sale are from local farms, and most everything is organic and/or sustainably made. Buying anything in here makes you feel good and tastes even better! Homegrown is the sandwich stand located right by the entrance. DO NOT be deceived by its size nor its non-descript appearance. The sandwiches are made with incredibly fresh and incredibly flavorful ingredients. My wife had the best vegetarian sandwich I have ever tasted. And how couldn't it be the best veggie sandwich ever when the sprouts, arugula, fresh humus and avocado were individually unreal!? The sandwich comes with a wonderful dill pickle that has the perfect crunch and sweetness. I had one of the specials: the fried eggplant, hazel nut-pesto sandwich. I am a fan of eggplant, and this sandwich makes this vegetable godly. The breadcrumb batter is fried to a perfect golden brown and gives the sliced eggplant (and the sandwich) a super crunchy texture. The hazelnut pesto is what really gives this sandwich its unique flavor and left me thinking how I can use this pesto to condiment anything and everything else I eat! Complimenting the sandwich are some housemade potato chips that are lightly salted and seasoned. Ladies and gentlemen, these are the best homemade potato chips you will ever have. Superb sandwiches, superb atmosphere and eating ingredients that were made sustainably make for an unbeatable and irreproducible experience. Go have lunch here!

I was really excited to try this place since it opened in the new Melrose Market in Cap Hill. I had the eggplant sandwich and chips. My friend had the meatloaf sandwich and I want to try that next time. The food was fresh and tasty, but a little pricey. Wish there was more room to sit. The line ends up wrapping around the bar tables which makes it awkward for the people already sitting and eating. But otherwise, it's a cute sandwich shop with local ingredients and interesting combinations. Oh and the homemade chips are delish.

unbelievably refreshing: array of sandwich selections from veggie to catfish! perfect stop if you're looking for a fresh, organic, sustainable meal-treat. DELICIOUS! TASTY pickles (you can buy extra delicious pickles for just a $1!)... warning: the line was long and it seemed like our orders took forever (my gf and i ordered at the same time, served at different which was sort of awkward)... hmm... still dreaming about my sandwich though..

Stopped in here based on a recco from a friend while on my way through on a roadtrip. Had a roast beef and DAMNNNN GLAD I LISTENED TO MY FRIEND! The service was fast and super friendly, my driving companion and I felt right at home. The manager (Joe? Jeff? something with a J!) was very attentive, as were the other staff. I wish I lived here cause I'd be in daily for delicious sandwiches and smiles!

Very good sandwich. Good bread, good ingredients. But I can really do without all the signs telling me how wonderful they are because they use local ingredients blah blah blah. There must be 5 or six different signs talking about the bread, the meat, their vendors, how to bus your tray. It's like eating in the school lunchroom or something.

  • Jeff R.

I see now this is a chain of sorts. I wondered where they were making the meats since the space is so small. Still, I had a nice roast beef sandwich. Doesn't come with anything. But the sandwich and little shop play into the hipster aesthetic of the Melrose building.

As a born-and-raised Capital Hillian, I don't take kindly to newcomers in the neighborhood. Honestly I was getting by just fine with my old CapHill standby's. I had a pretty diverse and delightful sandwich circuit. When homegrown plopped onto the scene a couple years ago I wasn't really wooed by their slick green/organic/local marketing blather. We see plenty of that stuff. But after getting dragged here by a couple friends, I have rapidly become a true convert. There might be a few mediocre sandwiches but overall i've been hard pressed to find something on their menu that wasn't delicious. Well done, homegrown, and welcome to the neighborhood.

I entered this place on a Friday night. I had little to do and did not feel like calling anyone. There were wine sippers, butchers, baristas and a flower shopgirl. The lighting varies sometimes bright, sometimes dark; which I like. I ordered a sandwich, my inclination is always toward a Reuben if it's on the menu. I could not resist the beet salad, who can? While the sandwich was being made, I walked over to the flower shopgirl and purchased an orange flavored organic french chocolate bar for six bucks. When I got back, my sandwich (about 15 bucks for both salad and sandwich) and salad were ready, I headed home (like 6 blocks away) and when I bit into this sandwich I seriously thought I was in heaven for about 2 seconds. The combinations of flavors among textures of the bread, meat and fixings were DELICIOUS. I was considering becoming a vegetarian, but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. The meat sold here is cruelty free. This was a perfect night for me, I deserve an AMAZING meal from time to time. Treat yourself and patronize this establishment.

What a joke. 2nd time I've been there and really hoping that the bad service experience wouldn't be repeated. I ordered a veggie sandwich. There were 4 - count them - 4 people behind the counter with no other customers around. It took them 20min to make it! No explanations, no appologies - just 4 hipsters not giving a damn about their jobs. Sandwich was ok but for $9 I expected more. Maybe they misinterpreted the meaning of Slow Food? Save yourself some money and some apathetic attitude and go to Baguette Box.

Go there, but don't go with the high hopes you are reading heres. The sandwiches are good, but not great. The cost for a whole sandwich is $12 which is way too over priced. Its not a bad sandwich, I just dont see the point in going back when there are others. The broccoli soup was actually not good and I would not recommend it. Barely any flavor and had the consistency of oatmeal. I wouldn't mind trying another sandwich there but not at that price.

I was worried when they stopped using Macrina bread a while back, but this remains my favorite place in Seattle in for a sandwich. I've had the turkey/bacon/avocado, the roast beef, the ham, the pork, and a few of the seasonals. Every one is fantastic. The pork is especially impressive with the rub they use and the apple butter. My girlfriend isn't a big sandwich eater but she gets a half size and often gets a soup to go with it (the soups are usually pretty tasty as well).

    (4)
  • Andy W.

Their "small" is still pretty monstrous. Ordered a small turkey bacon avocado and a small ham & beechers, and I couldn't finish them even with a hearty appetite. They do gourmet-style sandwiches, but they still come stacked and greasy, like a good deli sandwich. Great bread and toppings, lot of meat. The fries are well done, but not my style (I like 'em yellow and salty, call me old fashioned).

I had the veggie sandwich instead of one of the more exciting sounding choices, so maybe I sold myself short. The bread was very tasty though, and the staff was friendly

Just inside the main entrance of Melrose Market, Homegrown planted the second installment of their successful, sustainable sandwich shop. A vast menu highlights local, organic ingredients and inventive sandwiches such as 'crab cake with bacon + avocado', 'meatloaf BLT' and 'Bluffernutter', a peanut butter and bacon sandwich with marshmallow fluff. Housemade chips are crispy salty goodness. Several salads, soups and seasonal specials round out the lunch fare. Around noon, the line snaking out the door speaks for itself. Mornings are quieter affairs with choices narrowed down to a few breakfast sandwiches or oatmeal with nuts and fruit. Stumptown coffee is available all day. A late night weekend menu features the sort of fried food you crave after a night of drinking, only organic. Indoor seating is limited but additional outdoor seating is a bonus during warmer months. Homegrown refers to their sustainable philosophy as 'sandwich environmentalism.' Also known as good food you feel good about eating.

Had a Saturday morning breakfast here over the weekend, and was pleasantly surprised. There was no wait (8:30 am on a Saturday) and the breakfast sandwich was delicious. It came with a "small" oatmeal, I ate half my sandwich (and the bacon off the other half), half the oatmeal, and was full for most of the day. It's locally sourced, sustainable, and tasty. I will be back. Maybe to try their sandwich that is marshmallow fluff and peanut butter...(serious they have it, not serious about eating it -- but the catfish sandwich looks yummmmy)

Absolutely delicious. The bread it made right there, and you can tell. It's the freshest bread I've had maybe EVER. And it's not just the bread, the other parts of the sandwhich. Lots of vegan options, too. I can't wait to go back, and I cannot think of a bad thing to say about this place. The sandwiches might be a tad on the expensive side, but this is Seattle, you wont find a better sandwhich for this price. YUMMY!

I dream about the turkey, bacon, avocado on potato bread. SOOOO delicious. It's worth the incredibly expensive price. My only complaint- get some good sides! Even a clip on stand with various potato chip options would work. Always bums me out- I don't like pepper chips so my only choice is a pickle....

After having eaten here several times, I decided it's time to review! Overall, the food here is very tasty, if a bit inconsistent. I love the oatmeal for breakfast, but this last time it came without the candied walnuts which I love and missed. Also, at times the salads are way over-topped, like the blue cheese starts to make you sick... Bu t of course, I love the healthy, eco-friendly mission and it's very convenient for work, so you know I'll be back!

I am never disappointed when I eat a sandwich at Homegrown. I'm a creature of habit and when I find something I luuurrrrrrrve at any food establishment, I have a hard time trying something new when I KNOW I already have a delicious selection waiting for me on the menu. *However*.....thanks to my ever evolving adulthood pallatte, I have tried almost all of their sandwiches and thus far, I have yet to be disappointed. The roasted pork sandwich causes me to drool a little bit in public, and the Portabella + Goat Cheese sandwich is so yummy, that as a carnivore, I sometimes forget its totally vegetarian. I often have to force myself to walk out when I'm finished eating, so I don't buy another sandwich "for later....." To top it off, they sell Dry Soda in cucumber! CUCUMBER!!!! Sweet mother of pearl, there is no better refreshing fizzy drink to pair with such flavorful sandwiches. It's fresh, with a hint of sweet, much like the fabulous people who work behind the counter at Homegrown. It's a staple in my lunch agenda.

Homegrown has a limited menu of mostly sandwiches and I think the quality is hit-and-miss. The space is nice, but I don't understand the love folks have for them. I've eaten there a number of times and have had a few terrible experiences (soup that was just barely flavored brown water, bugs in salad, etc) and none that I would call great. However, if you are ok with fatty foods and don't have crazy high expectations their menu items are inventive and different.

Update...Went with a friend last week for some eats and to catch up... After my friend Corrine had placed our order and paid for it (thanks Corrine!), we sat at one of the long tables with our beers and waited for our meal. My friend ordered the Catfish Po'boy and I had the Roast Pork Loin sandwich. After a short wait, the cook who prepared our sandwiches took them to our table and I noticed a small order of fries on each order...the peculiar thing is that we didn't order any fries. After the cook placed the orders in front of us, he pulls out his phone and asks me, "Is this you?" and I realized he was showing me my review of Homegrown from Yelp (4 Stars). I said, "Yes, that's me." and then he told us that the fries were complimentary because of my review. He told me that the manager appreciates the positive reviews of his customers. My friend and I were pleasantly surprised. Normally, the fries would have cost about $3.50 each since they are seasoned with herbs and fennel...and the fries were awesome. I'd be willing to pay for them the next time I make a visit. We both enjoyed our sandwiches. I really appreciate establishments/restaurants that actually take the time to read the reviews of their customers...it shows how much they care about their customer's opinions even though not all reviews are positive - because of this, Homegrown is a very respectable establishment and I'm happy to be one of their patrons.

This is a cute eatery in a farmer's market type setting, nestled in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. It reminds me of Granville Island in Vancouver BC. The menu is all organic, as well as local and at reasonable prices for the quality of their food. Staff is friendly and the establishment, very clean. We ordered a catfish po'boy & leek soup for lunch. Delicious!! Atmosphere is so NW, I love it!

I love the atmosphere. I love the open setting. I love the people. I love the building. What I don't love is the price, the wait, and the overall taste. My girlfriend and I ordered two sandwiches, one a breakfast sandwich (Egg, Sausage and bacon) and a regular lunch sandwich (Turkey, Bacon, Avocado). The total was near $20.00. Actually, with a $2 tip it was just over $20.00. I was really excited to eat a sandwich that was local, delicious, and so close to my home. I thought "When I work nights I could really see myself coming by here and picking up a to go sandwich on my way home. I was wrong. We waited near 20 minutes for our two sandwiches with a total of four sandwiches in wait before us. That's a long wait for a few sandwiches! I thought to myself "That's okay, they're focusing on quality over quantity and I'm damned willing to wait and pay more for quality. After a 20 minute wait we got our sandwiches and I was clearly disappointed. The egg sandwich had what seemed to be the worlds smallest egg on it. It was 90% Lamb sausage which would be okay if the sausage were seasoned properly. It didn't really have any seasoning. It was almost as if someone took lamb, ground it up, made a patty and called it a sausage. That's not what a sausage is/should be. Neither myself nor my girlfriend who both tasted the sandwich could taste the bacon at all which is strange because bacon is one of those things that should jump out. Next was the turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich. This was better. There was more flavor to the bacon and to the avocado. The bread tasted better and it seemed like it was a winner. The only downside to this was the price. Near $10.00 for this sandwich. I get that local might be a bit more expensive but I could get the same quality from the city market down the street with more food and more flavor for half the price. I do give them props on the pickles though. They were good, albeit small. All of that being said I'm giving it a 3 star for location, atmosphere and staff attitude. That was great. Now if they could just get their food and pricing together I'd come back...

I LOVE this place! I went there once on a whim, after having walked by a handful of times. I was sold at first bite. Their sandwiches and salads are AWESOME, and their ingredients are SO fresh. I love that they are a local company, too, and buy locally (which they make sure to mention many many times on their menu board). Their turkey avocado bacon sammy is killer, and I really enjoyed their roast pork, too, though it wasn't my favorite. Their sandwich breads are great (I always got whole wheat) and I simply couldn't get enough!! I think one week I went almost every day. And the prices are right, too, for about $8 for a sandwich. You must go if you are in the capital hill area, or if you are working at the Paramount Theatre, around the corner!!

These sandwiches are soooo good! And the place is really cute too. And if you like to eat local type things, you will eat happy. I've had the turkey bacon avocado, which is super yummy. I just had the roast pork, it was so good I got a fork to pick up all the pieces which had fallen out of my sandwich! Very yummy!

Menu actually lists their suppliers with indicators for organic, local, etc. Takes all the snooty awkwardness out of asking, "What company does your __ come from?" -which is actually a really important question, but rarely asked without getting an annoyed response. Service is good, window seating, located in a nice open environment next to other sustainable vendors. I will say though, the sandwiches have never disappointed me, but the sides have. I've tried a lot of different sides, but the portion size has always been stingy. They taste good, but this place is expensive. The sandwiches are good portions, so I just stick to that.

I just had them cater a small lunch at work. The ordering process couldn't be easier, I got fast and professional follow-up, and a polite and thoughtful delivery person. The food was excellent, and the quality was above and beyond typical downtown boxed-lunch purveyors, yet the exact same price. We got a lot of jealous looks from others in the office. I'd definitely recommend Homegrown catering to anyone in downtown as a refreshing alternative to the usual caterers that everyone seems to use.

This sandwich shop might be one of the most amazing I have ever been to, the Crab Cake, Bacon and Avocado sandwich is delicious and I highly recommend it. I have only been here a couple times but the late night crew was fantastic! If you ever have friends from out of town and you want to treat them to some delicious food, take them to Homegrown in the Melrose Market, they will love you for it.

I discovered this restaurant tonight and it was outstanding. Not only does this place have a food ethic and an environmental conscience, but their food is absolutely divine, and their staff are very friendly, real, and charismatic. Ian and Andreas, the tattooed-face guy, made a special sandwich with lamb sausage for my friend because they ran out of andouille sausages. Their invention was an orchestra of flavors on my palette. They should really add this to their menu because foodies the world over should taste the great talents these two have to offer.

The tie is between the turkey bacon and the catfish po boy sandwiches. Local, organic, and super tasty with lots more stuff to try. Even there drink selection is local companies and organic choices too. It is really nice to give my money to places that are trying to keep the planet going while giving us really awesome food.Plus you can eat outside on a nice day and enjoy the sunshine.

I've ordered lunch for the office two days in a row. Once I did all individual sandwiches and the other time, a sandwich tray and salad for 10 people. Both times were awesome. I love the contents bagged lunch (apple, popcorn, donut, sammie) and the tray was a great variety that required little thought on my part. I will definitely make Homegrown the go-to caterer for work lunches.

This place was located inside of a shared space. Had great, huge open windows to the outside. Very simple place that has recycling and composting! Weren't as many organic ingredients as I'd hoped, but their quoted "Theory" seems to be to focus on purchasing local over organic (which is still debatable among enviro community as far as I can tell). I got the Avocado, Egg & Cheese breakfast sandwich, which has hot sauce on it...very tasty and the bread is amazing. Oatmeal well cooked and brown sugar really makes it great. The Boysenberry Soda was not my favorite though. My husband got Turkey, Bacon and Avocado Sandwich...he liked the bread but thought it was a little too heavy/creamy with combo of cheese, avocado, bacon and aioli.

AWFUL! My visit (2 times in 4 days) was like visiting a bakery in East Germany. Fryer's out, these aren't available. We've been busy, we're out of these meats. Sustainable, I think NOT. Do you like veggie sandwiches, they have plenty of those. Get it together!

Came here for the first time today for lunch with my brother and his gf. Very cute building - there's little stores inside - I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the combo - 1/2 sandwich (ham&swiss) and cup of soup (cauliflower leek). The others got the catfish po boy and meatloaf sandwich and fries. The catfish po boy had some kick to it so I did not try it however hear the catfish was delicious. The meatloaf was tasty as well but definitely not as good as my ham&swiss. I've had a lot of ham and cheese sandwiches but this was probably the best one I've ever had. I've never seen brussel sprouts in any sandwich so I was surprise to find them so delicious! And little bits of apple to sweeten everything up. I wish I had had a whole sandwich! The soup was ok... it started off kind of bland but then the spiciness kicked in. Not sure what happened. Maybe I didn't stir it up or its the prego hormones talkin'... Either way my tummy is happy and full! Looking forward to having that sandwich again! PS- the fries were really good too!

had to try the broccoli melt sandwich; never heard of such a sandwich before! paprika broccoli with an onion jam and jack cheese on choice of white or wheat bread. it honestly looked a little small (especially next to the gargantuan pickle accompanying it) on the tray when my order was called but every single bite was scrumptious and i hope it comes back as a seasonal menu item again! the homemade potato chips were good, as you would expect from quality potato chips, and the beet salad (beets, fennel, arugula, goat cheese with lavendar dressing) my friend ate looked - and according to him tasted - great. came in on one of these rainy winter days and struggled with what to do with our wet coats as there is no place to hang them; a coat rack or hooks on/near the window panes would be nice.

Really good sandwiches from locally sourced food. They changed their bread supplier in the past year so that's not been such a great change. The soups are hit or miss. But if you want a good sandwich with the potato bread or with the whole grain bread toasted (so it doesn't fall apart in your hands), it's a good place to eat.

Let me start off by saying the food is very good. And the atmosphere is nice. Here is my issue.... Went in with a friend around 11:10 in the morning. Ordered a breakfast item which apparently they stop serving at 11:00. I didn't notice that detail and the guy working didn't bother telling me. So I get my sandwich, but without the oatmeal it's supposed to come with. And I say "oh, hey. Doesn't this come with oatmeal?" I know I was polite because I work in the service industry, it's my job to be nice and a good host, and I extend that to the way I treat people outside of work. It's part of being a decent human being. The response I got was, "Yeah. We don't have any more oatmeal. And anyway, we stop serving breakfast at 11:00, so yeah." I know it's Capital Hill, but really? If the guy working had said that they were done making breakfast it would have been fine. If they had been out of oatmeal and just had been nice about it, it would have been no big deal. But they treated me like I was lucky to get the SEVEN DOLLAR egg and sausage sandwich at all, and how stupid of me to ask for what I ordered. Sorry guys, but there are plenty of other delicious places to eat in Seattle where you aren't treated like a loser for asking someone to do their job. Just sayin....

Homegrown makes a decent sandwich. Their menu is definitely spot on. It's the type of place that you can't decide which one you want because they all sound so damn good. They also use combination of seasonal, local, and organic ingredients. I shared the Reuben with my sister which had delicately tender pastrami, melted Beecher's cheese, and a cranberry mostarda. It was a little sweet for my taste, but that is simply preference, the quality was there! My only problem with this little sandwich shop is the price. $12 is too much for a sandwich that doesn't come with any sides. Way too much. But, it's delicious!!

Hip looking joint in the Melrose Market. The Market also houses a bunch of other businesses like the Calf and Kid cheese shop, Rainshadow Meats, Sitka and Spruce restaurant. The sandwiches are pretty interesting and they serve breakfast and lunch/dinner sandwiches. I gather since they are a sustainable sandwich shop that everything is organic, harvested within a stones throw away of the place and or lived a happy and full life before it became a side of bacon. stuff so far: Breakfast sandwich with lamb sausage, fried egg on sesame seed roll/side of oatmeal with brown sugar ($8) -The sandwich was very, very tasty but what a mess!! The egg is sort of over easy so the yolk shot out all over the place on the first bite. Kind of gooey but still tasty. Wear a bib and watch out ! -oatmeal was small appropriate size. Good to combat the cholesterol-fest you are eating with the sandwich Crab and Bacon sandwich with avocado, chimichurri sauce and aioli spread on sesame seed roll ($11) -Very yummy! nice lump dungeness crab cake, crisp bacon and a generous pile of smashed avocado. I enjoyed this greatly. The prices here can be a bit on the higher side but it seems you are paying for the quality ingredients and the sustainability factor. The space itself in the Melrose Market is very cool with a warehouse feel to the place and the eclectic mix of businesses. Check out this place!

I love sandwiches and we needed a quick meal before the Hard Rock Elite Event. I'd been itchin to try Homegrown since I live inbetween the Fremont and Queen Anne locations but have been to neither. A quick trip up the hill from downtown brought us to the new-ish Melrose Market and Homegrown. I must admit I was a little disappointed with the sandwich selection since I was craving chicken or turkey. There was zero chicken and turkey only came accompanied by bacon and avocado. So we both chose the (vege) special of the day, which I believe included spicy hummus, some sort of homemade chili sauce, jalapenos, and cucumbers. Mine was $8, my BF got half a sandwich and a cup of soup for $9. The sandwich was very good but for the price I wanted it to be slightly better. I think the bread could be improved. I was not a fan of the dining area. The tables are too close together and the stools are uncomfortable and slippery. I was also laughing at the outdoor seating since it's like two and a half feet wide and it would be super annoying anytime someone walked by. While I'm leaning towards 3 Stars, I'll give Homegrown the extra one since the Melrose Market location is cute and cool and smells real good, the service was pretty friendly, they serve beer and focus on local and organic ingredients. A little too expensive for me, but no doubt they've got a captive audience on Hipster Hill: stuffwhitepeoplelike.com…

Yup, I was in Seattle! I have grown fond of sandwiches so my bf and I stopped here. Kudos for gluten free bread, I have stomach nightmares and I take gluten free anything whenever I can. That fig salad OMG. I have anosmia, so the flavors really have to be out there for me to even notice them and this was delicious. Everybody was so nice and courteous. I see below some complaints about service, but that was NOT the case at all. I not only experienced efficiency but a welcoming ambiance and quality food. Perhaps is under new management? I definitely recommend it and I will "mos def" go back if I happen to go back to Seattle.

Whole grain bread is fantastic. Roast beef sandwich was pleasantly accompanied by a side salad. Excellent value for Seattle.

I devoured a damn fine sandwich for lunch today that featured grilled chicken, roasted asparagus and kale, and Beechers cheese. No regrets on that decision, nor on the decision to eat more creamy artichoke soup than my belly had room to accomodate. It hurts so good!

Oh Melrose Market, you charm me so with your industrial-chic decor and rugged exposed beams. Admittedly, one star in this review is for the ambience that this place creates (which is lovely, in my opinion), while the other two relate more directly to Homegrown itself. I'd been wanting to try Homegrown in Fremont for a long, long time, so I was delighted when they decided to open a location in my neighborhood (yay no driving for me!). I'd visited a few of the other shops in this building before and it was just a matter of timing to sit down and enjoy a good sandwich. Thankfully I finally worked that out today! First and foremost, people should be aware that these sandwiches are a bit on the "petite" side. That is, they're likely about the same size as a sandwich you'd make yourself at home (unless of course, you eat like a Yeti, but I digress). That said, they ARE a bit on the pricey side, but consider the quality of the ingredients and the care that this establishment takes in sourcing said ingredients, and you'll understand why the pricing is the way it is. I ordered off of the seasonal menu and went with the beet salad sandwich, while my boyfriend went for the meatloaf BLT (polar opposites!). My sandwich was delicious with fresh veggies and lightly toasted multigrain bread. Even though it looked a bit sad and small on the platter, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself satiated without feeling greasy or over-stuffed. The boyfriend agreed that he too, was relatively satisfied (which is saying a lot, considering this guy has polished off an entire hot mama's large pizza on his own, ahem!). So, the breakdown is 1 star for the space (beautiful), 1 star for great ingredients, and 1 star for overall taste. I took off a star for price (I do admit I am a bit cheap when it comes to sandwiches), and 1 star for portion (could be juuuust a bit more for your money). Would I come down here JUST to eat at Homegrown? No, but if I happen to be around the 'hood I'd definitely drop in for a bite. Not a place to go if you're starving, but definitely a nice spot to get a "light meal."

So yummy! I had the Ham + Beecher's which was delicious! My friend had the hummus and red pepper which she loves - and always gets. Their bread is killer - it's probably a good thing they don't sell it by the loaf!

Two things: First, they are now open for dinner (until 8) every night! Second, anyone who thinks the sandwiches are too small needs to return, and try the NW Chicken Mole seasonal. Talk about a hoagie-clad appetite massacre dripping in spicy juices....Mmm.

Dat Reuben Revised. Yummm...definitely an interesting and tasty deviation from your typical Reuben on rye. The revisions include red wine kraut, beechers cheese and cranberry mostarda. I ordered a large for $11 which is a bit pricey but any gourmet sandwich will run you about $10 these days. It was worth the price. The cheese was delicious and gooey, the pastrami was tender and the cranberry mostarda gave it a kick of sweetness. My only annoying and nit-picky complaint would be that the mostarda portion was a tad heavy, but it honestly did not detract much from the sandwich as a whole. Get it on potato bread! I had been avoiding this place because it seemed overpriced but now I am glad I went.

I thought this place was awesome until I ate the sandwich. Let me start from the start. I got a rock star parking spot right out front. Nice building. Pleasant hipsters. Yummy-looking menu. Big vat of homemade chips! So many choices. Good service. Not too long of a wait. Smiling people. Sandwich looks delish. Ate the sandwich. Yuck. Flimsy, soggy bread. Bland ingredients. Tough pork. Ick.

I don't often rave about sandwiches, but these are really great, particularly the turkey, bacon, and avocado. The potato bread almost makes me weep it is so good. I'm reading through some of these reviews and not understanding at all the complaints about the service. I've never waited more than 5-10 minutes for a sandwich here, even during the lunch hour. There's not always a place to sit, but I usually take them to go anyway.

We were staying in Fremont for one day so the night before we'd walked around the neighborhood and saw Homegrown - planned to check it out the next morning. For breakfast I ordered a avocado, egg, gouda sandwich on french bread and it was delicious. My main complaint is the price - I understand sustainable food production is going to be more costly than the subsidized food prices we may be used to, but this seemed a little too much - with a generous tip for the half sandwich only (water to drink) I paid $10. And it was slightly bigger than an Egg McMuffin (though, I admit, more tasty). So, it was a splurge and it was good, but I don't think I could make this a regular stop.

All good things come to those who wait. I'd heard wonderful things about Homegrown but never managed to make the trip over to Fremont. Now I don't have to! Their new restaurant on Capitol Hill (in the awesome Melrose building) is fantastic--and it's conveniently located between my home and work! For my first foray into sustainable sandwiches I had the crab cake, bacon and avocado. Yes, you read that right. A crab cake the size of a hamburger patty. With Zoe's bacon. And avocado. Plus some delicious greens and hazelnut dressing on an Essential Baking Co. organic bun. It was amazing! My only complaint is that I like my bacon super-crispy, and theirs wasn't--but I bet if I ask nicely next time I'm in they'll hook me up. They've got a number of other tasty-sounding sandwiches and salads (including a roasted beet salad with goat cheese that I must try). They offer a few different bottles of northwest beers, dry sodas and other beverages to wash down your meal. Their breakfast sammiches sound yummy and they are promising a late-night menu that should be be good for soaking up some booze after you've tied one on at Chapel or the Baltic Room. Really the only downside is that the prices are a little spendy--but you're getting delicious food made from fresh, quality ingredients, so it's worth it. I think I've found my new favorite sandwich shop.

De-lish! Great spot to stumble to for actually delicious late-night-on-the-go-food. Conveniently located on the hill means easy to walk to, but don't even bother if you're driving. Try the Bluffernutter - peanut butter, marshmallow fluff and bacon heaven on bread.

We came in for lunch on a Sunday and it wasn't as packed as I had anticipated although we did have to stalk at table indoors near the open windows while we waited for our food. While I don't expect every organic/sustainable food joint to cater to vegans, I still don't get why the best combo a sandwich maker can come up with for us pesky non-cheese eaters is some sort of combination of hummus, avocado, sprout & tomato dealio. My favorite local market in SF has the same exact sandwich. Sure it's ok but it's just not outstanding. Ehh, whatever. I know it's not Homegrown's fault. I could have gotten a salad but sometimes you just don't want a salad. I added a 4th star as the thin crunchy french fries covered in herbs were simple and awesome.

Good Food and good service on Hill So we were hungry and I had seen this place last night when I stopped at Sonic Boom, so I asked the BF if he was in the mood for a sammich for lunch he said sure why not He got the Steak sammich and I got the Reuben sammich, both came with a dill pickle, the sammiches were really good and full of flavor, this is not your Kosher Reuben here Baby, it has a good zing to it from the Red Wine Kraut I believe, and the toasted Onion Rye was very good also I am not a big Rye person but I liked this one I also took a bite of my BF's Flank Steak sammich it also was very good and the Chimichurri Really Makes this Sammich stick out, it comes on a whole grain but I would love to try it on the Onion Rye they also have Dry Sodas, and Stumptown Coffee they have a late night menu for Fri and Saturday nights 10pm-3am I really want to try the Catfish Hush Puppies over all a very nice place and they seem to be doing good for just opening up yesterday

Recently used trufl.com to place an order here & it was awesome. Wanted to find a quick & easy way to order some yummy lunch to share with a friend who just had a baby. For ~$20, we shared 2 "small" sandwiches, 2 salt & pepper chips (they make them there & they are SOOOOO good - I wish they offered a larger size!) & a large salad. Everything was super tasty & I simply showed up ~15 minutes after I placed the order on-line. Walked in, my bag was all packed & ready to go, paid the cashier & I was out the door.

The food is amazing! I don't really like sandwiches but this place is totally different. The food is so tasty and their bread and bacon must have some secret?! =) The only reason I gave the 4 stars is the place is small and only has 3 tables which are usually occupied. Also, it's a little bit expensive for a sandwich (over $10).

It sure is fun to go to the Capitol Hill Homegrown! It is located inside the Melrose Market, so I had a lot of fun perusing the neat shops and while I was waiting for my order to be called. I ordered a small Cranberry + Bleu salad. It was pretty tasty, and the small portion was actually pretty large and filling. The price was a bit higher than what I usually pay for a salad, but I guess I am willing to pay a bit extra to have organic, sustainable, healthy ingredients. I'd like to go back and try some of their sandwiches and soups. I found myself envying the lunch of the gentleman sitting next to me as his Thai Curry soup looked scrumptious!

This place used to be my SPOT! I lived a block away from the capitol hill location at melrose market. My girlfriend and I would meet up here for lunch pretty frequently. A couple of months ago I noticed that the sandwiches have changed. They ARE smaller. I e-mailed the company about it and they said they used the same weight of dough....It cannot be. it absolutely cannot. The smaller sized sandwich, a year ago, could not fit in the palm of my hand like the current sandwich and I remember having to eat that one out of the wrapper because the ingredients were just so full and robust... ugh... an aaammaazing sandwich. It was perfect size at 7 dollars. Filled me up perfectly. I ordered the same size as usual and was handed this little tea sandwich. I had to go buy food elsewhere afterwards. Anyways, a couple of months down the road, I'm craving that homegrown goodness decide to go for the larger 12 dollar size.12 dollar sandwich and apple juice total to 16.95. I gotta tip a dollar or I will feel guilty the entire day. 17.95. For me. Only me. For lunch. My gf and I used to both eat here and get apple juice for about 22 dollars I think. She's going to think I'm cheating on her with a lunch bill like that! I know they probably want people to buy soup and salad with a sandwich, indulge in other menu items to make up for the lack of sandwich. But seriously, I can't afford side items when I have to buy the 12 dollar sandwich. It's just not worth it anymore. Even if I don't buy a drink 12 bucks is a lot for lunch and not even feel content. I'll be adding a photo of what a 7 dollar sandwich used to look like.

Had the seasonal sandwich. Roasted chicken, lavender peach butter, what? And goat cheese on whole grain. My goodness. It was a tad bit sweet, but this was cut by the creamy and bright flavor of the goat cheese. Must try.

We visited Homegrown on our way out of town on 7/9/12. We needed a quick stop on our way to the airport, so I Yelped sandwiches and found this place. Loved it. Located in a small market with other vendors - Meat, Stumptown Coffee, Cheese Shop, and Flowers. Great atmosphere, totally relaxed and inviting. As an added bonus, Anthony Bourdain & crew were filming for one of his shows at the time of our visit. Seriously good food.

Good food, very pricy though. I paid $22 on lunch to-go, only to find the wrong sandwich. For that much money I'd like at the very least my correct order, which shouldn't be difficult for the four people standing around. Probably wont go back.

Stopped here for a quick bite on Sunday morning and got the bacon, egg, and beecher's breakfast sandwich on the french roll. Let me say that the bread was incredibly enjoyable - so spongy and chewy and tasty! The egg was cooked perfectly - runny after biting into it and the beecher's cheese provided a great flavor complement to the sandwich. I would've preferred a little more green in my sandwich but I can probably ask for that customization next time. Otherwise, only critique is that the prices are kind of high ($7 for a half sandwich, $12 for a full).

This is my favorite sandwich in Seattle. Delicious bread, fresh meat and veggies, toasted perfectly every time, great service, and, it resides in an amazing location up on Capitol Hill next to Taylor Shellfish.

This place surprised me. I was expecting it to be just fine. My turkey, bacon and avocado was really good. So was my friend's ham and cheese. The beet salad we ordered was predictable, but fresh and tasty. At lunch rush hour the seating was competitive and should get worse without the outside tables. I'll go back, but either for takeout or after the lunch rush.

I have been here many times and the menu is great but this latest visit was horrible in terms of service. I arrived at 8am - the time the homegrown website says they open for business. The girl working there rudely told me they weren't open until 8 - I told her it is 8 but ok, I can wait a few minutes if they aren't ready to open. She was clearly behind schedule with her opening responsibilities but not willing to admit that. I waited around for 5 minutes, then she came back to say it will be at least 15 more minutes until she can make anything, because the toaster is heating up. She had a really unapologetic attitude and offered no explanation as to why they weren't open when they said they would be. Obviously you should be open during your business hours, Homegrown!! If the staff had been more friendly and helpful I might have waited, but she was so rude and unwelcoming that I couldn't justify waiting 20 minutes AND paying $8 for a breakfast sandwich.

I loved this place... unfortunately two very long hairs in my sandwich are just too gross and I don't think I'll get over it. Bandanas aren't cool, I agree.. but when your hair is getting in your customer's food then you might want to start looking at options.

Crab, bacon, and avocado--doesn't that sound like an incredibly flavorful sandwich? It wasn't. The crab cake was sodden and greasy; the bacon dry; the avocado mealy and overripe. Worst of all, they slopped on those mixed field greens that turn to slime the moment they hit anything at all warm. How I longed for the crunch of romaine. Likewise, the meatloaf, bacon, and jalapeno sandwich Ben M. had was also terribly bland and featured the same slimy greens. I don't usually mention cost in my reviews, but $32 for two beers and two barely edible sandwiches just seems like way too much. I'm serious when I say that this $10 sandwich was one of the worst dishes I've eaten in years. There was an upside to eating here; now, whenever I eat a tasty sandwich I find myself looking back on the horror of my Homegrown sandwich and being glad that I'll never eat there again. Oddly, I remember eating at the Fremont location when it first opened and thinking it was pretty good.

    (1)
  • Laura B.

The sandwiches here are all pretty tasty, but the Ham and Beecher's is on another level. Unfortunately, they changed up their bread to a different kind of roll, and kills the sandwich - not stiff enough to hold it, not as good...I don't know what it is, but sadly it makes a huge difference. Plus the staff here always leaves much to be desired.

  • John M.

I love sandwiches like other people love bacon (which I also love and don't get me started on bacon sandwiches...). I am thankful that sandwiches have not yet achieved the same irritating surfeit of cultural significance but Homegrown is doing their damnedest to remedy that. I have a bit of a commute and regularly rely on Homegrown to bolster my resolve whenever the driving dolrdrums try to get the best of me. Lots of locally sourced and sustainable ingredients ... yes, basically the usual suspects (Painted Hills, Carlton Farms...) all the other joints that do this sort of thing use, but that is a good thing even if it feels like you are ordering food from a subsidiary of the Pitchfork Media Group. There is a process to ordering, albeit a simple one and Homegrown provides a handy flowchart overhead to minimize the confusion. I can help you further... follow these steps when ordering: 1) Choose your sandwich- you are in a sandwich shop, you order a sandwich, not a salad. You do not go to a steak house and order chicken piccata. Don't be that person. 2) Large- If you cannot finish it in one sitting, you'll have leftovers. Being strapped for cash is the only reasonable exception here. 3) Potato bread- Theirs is the best thing ever. I cannot fathom why they even bothered to waste their chalk and our time on a wholegrain option. The Reuben Revised is the single greatest sandwich, consistently available to me (special one-time creations do not count), that I have ever eaten in my life. I don't even love the Reuben as a sandwich. This one is a glorious feast that induces the sound of heralding trumpets in your head with each bite, I shit you not. Try it. Just try it. The Roast Pork places 2nd in my heart. The apple butter should be classified a class 1 controlled substance. Turkey Bacon Avocado; yes please. Ham and Beechers = a winning combo and the Roast Beef Swiss (raw milk) is a delightful hearty concoction (horseradish aioli!). I have no doubt the veggie sandwiches taste as good as possible despite their obvious deficiencies but I'll never know. Here is the one caveat... the soup. All soup here should be avoided, nay shunned at all cost. I have no idea how a place that makes such great sandwiches consistently drops the ball on soup, but Homegrown has cornered the market with an unmatched aptitude for the disappointing. The standard recipe seems to be to take whatever fibrous veg is in the cooler, run it through a food processor, place in a pot as a base, cover with water, an awful, heavy-handed spice combination and overcook. In recent memory I have regrettably tried the sweet potato risotto (the name SCREAMS DELCIOUS!), cream of artichoke, and the corn chowder; all were deplorable especially considering the company they were keeping with these fantastic sandwiches. I actually hated the soups even more because they were taking up valuable real estate in my stomach but since my mom taught me to clean my plate; I had to force them down. The soup causes them to lose a star, otherwise 5 stars all around. The staff has always been friendly and speedy, please tip them well.

Super fresh sandwich in a really cute space. Good vegetarian options and by vegetarian sandwich i DO NOT mean fake meat sandwich, we're talking about a nice combination of vegetables, prepared and seasoned well, combined with interesting spreads and tasty breads. A little bit overpriced for my satisfaction though...

  • Susan N.

I don't particularly seek out sandwiches. The only ones I might actually crave are those vietnamese baguette sandwiches since I grew up with them. Most other sandwich-eating occasions are driven by convenience and/or the person(s) I might be with when hunger strikes. That said, I have been satisfied with every visit to Homegrown. It's my first choice when anyone wants a sandwich because I know I'll get an amazing sandwich combination that my mouth and local/organic food conscience will thank me for. Their soups have also been pretty good as well. Next time you're there, try the classic turkey, bacon, and avocado or if you're adventurous, watch out for the jalapenos in the meatloaf BLT. They do tend to take a while putting together toasted sandwiches, so to save some time, call ahead. You can also just kill some time by visiting the other vendors at the Melrose Market, which are pretty awesome, too.

I visited homegrown last week while in town for PAX. Homegrown is conveniently located around the corner from the Starbucks reserve room off Pine St. We were there early in the morning so there was no wait. Homegrown has a charcuterie in house cutting their meats! And all of their ingredients are sourced locally. Our friend who had been there before suggested we order the Bacon, egg, and Beechers cheese breakfast sandwich so we did. It was amazing. The breakfast sandwich comes with a fried egg, garlic aïoli, cheese (Beechers cheese) bacon and the most delicious bread sent from heaven and sprinkled with unicorn tears. It's the most delicious breakfast sandwich I've ever had and a must for anyone in Seattle. I purchased the large size but half of the sandwich was enough given all of the rich delicious flavors. I was nice enough to share my other half with my friend. I do apologize for the lack of pictures it was early in the morning, I was tired and I also did not want to wait to eat my delicious sandwich. Like my bf's boss said "A breakfast sandwich is a breakfast sandwich- but this is something else!" he really said that :)

The boyfriend and I absolutely love this place, food wise. I always get a small side salad and the chicken pesto sandwich (half). It's the perfect amount of food for a healthy energizing lunch. It's also great you can choose between a half or full sized sandwich. Only reason I give this place less than five stars is due to the awkwardness of the employees and the inconsistency in hours. Supposedly they're open from eight to eight but, tried to come in recently around five thirty and they were closed. What?!

  • Abi M.

Be warned - the pictures on the website greatly misrepresent what you will be getting. We ordered the ham, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich and the bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. The bread to other ingredient ratio is totally out of whack - way too much bread for the one slab of ham/bacon on the sandwich. Additionally, the whole grain bread completely feel apart as I ate it (the French bread kept together much better). Two of our four yolks was completely overdone, as if we ordered them to be hard boiled. I'm convinced the eggs are not fried, as advertised. This cool space has potential but I was disappointed in the false advertising.

Great sandwich chain. Have never been disappointed by anything on the menu. The bread is excellent (just the right level of hearty and chewy) and the ingredients are high quality with great flavor combinations. Excellent for both breakfast and lunch.

I ordered their Turkey, avocado, & bacon on wheat bread. I thought it was pretty much a fancier Panera sandwich. You can taste the better quality that's for sure. But would I pay ~$12 bucks for a sandwich when I can just toss some turkey, avocado, and bacon on wheat bread at my house? Not sure, not so sure if Homegrown is worth my money.

Its fresh and tasty, but for what it is its pretty pricey. Today I got a sandwich + side salad = $18 plus tip (because I had to pay an extra $2 for the suggested mozzarella to add cheese to the special seasonal sandwich.) I mean damn I didn't even get a drink. I think I'd rather hit up a happy hour or another lunch spot in the area if I'm gonna be spending $20 on just lunch for myself it shouldn't be just a sandwich! There aren't many sandwich spots to pick from on the hill so I'll most likely be back. I'll probably reserve my visits to homegrown if I'm feeling like a light meal and lazy to go some place else. Sigh.

BLUF: Homegrown is quite delicious. It is also insanely expensive! While visiting my sister in Seattle we happened to walk past Homegrown and noticed that they were having a re-opening in a few days that was "pay what you want." We made a mental note and headed over that Monday for lunch. I went with the Ham and Beecher's, since everyone knows that is my favorite cheese and cannot.stop.eating.it . My sister tried the TLT and her husband had the Turkey, Bacon, Avocado. We all enjoyed our (large sized) sandwiches, although they weren't exactly huge given that they were the big size. I can imagine being quite hungry afterwards if you went with the small. You could also tell the quality of all ingredients was excellent and fresh. My real problem is the price. Along with my sandwich I had a pickle and a bottled iced tea. The price? $15. Pretty ridiculous. My sister's meal was equally as expensive and her husband's meal was quoted as being $20 with the addition of a small cup of soup. $20 for a weekday grab-and-go lunch?? Despite being able to choose your price, I felt stingy leaving anything less than $10 and felt slightly annoyed walking out of there having still paid more than I would have for a huge bowl of pho and Vietnamese coffee down the street. Would I eat there again? Yes, on the condition that someone else was paying. This would make for the ultimate corporate catered lunch! Businesses, take note.

i've been here a few times and always say i'm not going back because it's pricey for what you're getting but somehow i always end up back there! was in cap hill and decided to stop in for a quick bite. i like that the breakfast sandwiches are served all day and i also like the quality sturdiness of the multigrain bread they used. i got the avocado, egg and cheese sandwich. there was a tiny amount of runny yolk in the egg, which i enjoyed, and the hot sauce was SPICY for me! but then again, i also have an extremely sensitive stomach so just ask for less if that might bother you. i got the caprese salad as a side which i enjoyed. plenty of pesto sauce and lots of little mozzarella balls (yum). the tomatoes were also really sweet. it's healthy fare, but just keep in mind you'll shell out a pretty penny for fairly small quantities..

Employees are not trained well. Refilling (pouring) creme in the canteen(?) was a chore for them as they spilled quite a bit. Worst part was that she didn't even bother to clean it up. Spinich were wilted, beets, and cucumbers were marinated too much with vinegar. Generally disappointed with the visit

We used Homegrown as our caterer for our wedding, and they did an incredible job. Chad was really easy to work with, and was available to answer questions and change our order as needed when things came up. Chad had us in for a tasting and we were blown away by how good everything was. They were very accommodating and had wonderful gluten free options that were needed by a few of our guests. We ordered about 75% more sandwiches than we had guests to make sure we had enough, and by the end of the night everything was gone! Our guests loved everything!

Their sandwiches are the bomb. AND, I feel really great that all the yummy ingredients were locally sourced and quality. For once, I did not have to sacrifice a pretty penny to be environmentally responsible. I had the beef sandwich - half for $6.50. While it wasn't a ginormous portion, it was a generous portion enough to fill a large appetite. My friend ordered the mushroom soup and she really enjoyed it and would recommend it. The potato salad and chips are good sides, but not must-haves. They have seating inside and outside - it is limited or a small area, so if you're hitting a busy lunch hour, you may have to eat it outside or elsewhere. Hope it's sunny, if so!

My favorite breakfast sandwich! Wheat bread, bacon and egg, then add avocado. So perfect! A whole sandwich is pretty big and quite pricy at $9 (whole basic sandwich, $13 if you add avocado). I usually get it in morning and lasts until lunch! It's cooked at the time of order rather than reheated. And they use high quality, fresh and sustainable products.

Excellent sandwiches. I thought they were a little on the more expensive side, but ohhhh so worth it! Had the breakfast bacon egg and Beecher's which was amazing. Highly recommend, and the workers are helpful! Great place especially on a spring Seattle morning :)

Great local restaurant with several different location. The one in Melrose market has a distinct feel, with the other establishment located in the market offering you the opportunity to have a meal among friends family and new acquaintances. Feel free to take your meal to bar Ferdinand or Sitka and spruce while enjoying a cocktail of your choice. I personally like the turkey bacon avocado tomato sandwich on French bread with arugula greens and a little aioli spread. They have some great kids meal options that will suit any picky eater.

The sandwiches here are superb. They didn't feel heavy at all and kept me full for a good 5 hours on just half a sandwich and a potato salad side. There is something remarkable about eating organic, wholesale food. The energy that I got from my Homegrown meal was so refreshing in a world dominated by chemically enhanced everything. Depending on what you buy, the price can be quite hefty for the quantity, but trust me- it is SO worth it. If I won the lottery I would eat here every day. Just a side note: The seating area is very, very small and compact. This doesn't affect my rating because the food is too amazing, but I would recommend taking the food to-go and finding someplace else to eat it. Kind of annoying, unless the weather is nice!

Average sandwiches at best, and judging from the big open bags of Kettle Chips that I saw on the counter in back, it's clear they repackage them in cute little clear baggies so that they can sell them like homemade chips. That should tell you all you need to know about this place.

I have found my new all-time favorite sandwich shop. The ingredients are awesome and everything tastes fresh and amazing. I've had the Chicken Pesto and the Turkey, Bacon + Avocado and both were out of this world incredible! Yes, there is usually a wait, but it's worth every minute. The only thing that could make this place better is a preorder app and a quick pick up counter.

So far I have only checked them out for breakfast, but they seem to offer quality and consistency (consistency is a huge deal for me). They actually have a really nice gluten-free bread, which is also a nice change from other places. One of my favorite things to do for breakfast is to order two different whole sandwiches so that my husband and I can each have our own half, but I could probably get away with a single half and be fine. If you are looking for a good breakfast sandwich, this is definitely a good place to go. I haven't tried their lunch, but I can imagine it would be similar since they try and focus on quality ingredients. Side note: The rest of the Melrose Market is really cool and definitely worth checking out, but most of it isn't open in the morning.

We had a quick breakfast here. I had the Avocado, Egg + Cheese, and my husband grabbed the Bacon, Egg + Beecher's. The location was really unique. The service left something to be desired.

I went within an hour of when they closed and they warned me as I was looking at the menu that they were out of bread - kind of unfortunate for a sandwich place. I had the pesto caprese side salad (which is spinach, tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil pesto, nothing too fancy) and a bottle of Stumptown coffee roasters cold brew. I would probably try it again earlier in the day - the descriptions of their sandwiches looked great and they have gluten free bread on the menu.

Rip off alert. I had the Italian sub and a cup of tomato soup for lunch today. Total cost: $15. That comes out to approximately $8 per piece of salami on my sandwich (that's less than 2 pieces of salami total for those of you counting at home). Seriously, I've seen more meat on a veggie burger. Since those two pieces of meat were shockingly not enough to satiate my man hunger, I had to go to Bartells for a post Home Grown snack. That was actually the highlight of my otherwise dismal lunch experience. For the price ($15 for a puny meatless sandwich and cup of soup) this place is absolutely positively not worth it. I could've paid less for a pizza + soup + tip at Tutta Bella. Yellow Dot also gives you more bang for your buck (and IMO has better food) than this overpriced snack shop.

Huge fan of Homegrown. I am really glad to see that they're opening shop in different hoods now to serve the hungry people of Seattle. I call their bacon/turkey/avocado sandwich the "crack sammy" because it's so damn good. Always consistently yummy and never dry. Try it, you'll thank me later.

I really enjoy Homegrown, especially the one at Melrose Market due mostly to the atmosphere, but also for the highly appealing use of ingredients like bacon and avocado. Melrose has a certain industrial yet farmlike quality to it with its exposed ceilings and wood floors so there's plenty of character to the space it lives in with some other pretty cool boutique food places. Homegrown sits immediately to the right when you first walk into the open air space (you'll notice that to your left is Rain Shadow Meats -- also very good, but that's an entirely different industry/different review). First off: Seating. There are a lot of seating options from indoor tables to outdoor ones. All create an atmosphere of laid-backness (is that a word? It is now). Secondly: The food. A sandwich is a sandwich, but these are bites of heaven! I typically go for the things owing to the fact many of them are vehicles for bacon. There are a great variety of choices, including some breakfast options for people who enjoy various forms of eggs. You can choose a size (half or whole) and also a bread type (white, wheat, or gluten free). Everyone loves choices! Finally: The service. It's fast, friendly and professional. You'll have your sandwich or salad in no time, nomatter how many people are hanging about. If things are moving too slowly for your taste, you can always check out the little shop that sits above it that has a cute collection of hipster products (glassware, antique letters, jewelry, etc.)... but you probably won't be able to: The longest I've waited is 5-10 minutes. Booya!

My coworkers have been here a few times without me and I finally had the chance to go today. It is as good as they said it was! I got the bacon egg and Beechers sandwich and it was amazing! The sandwich was very flavorful. The egg was over medium to allow the delicious free range chicken eggs to ooze all over the whole wheat bread (which was really good too). My only gripe is that there was a little too much aioli. Other than that, this place is pretty amazing. I'll definitely come back to try out their other sandwiches :)

  • Laura D.

I don't usually brother to write reviews, but I was SO disappointed with a recent take out BLT I felt I had to say something! The wholewheat bread was pretty good, but the potion size was tiny, especially for around $10 of a full sandwich. The most disappointing thing was the lack of filling - a couple of thin slices of bacon & I paid an extra $3 for three tiny slices of avocado. Total rip off & pretty tasteless, probably because 90% of the sandwich was just bread. I'd suggest going to 'The Baguette Box' down the road for much better sandwiches at a much better price!

Kinda like Mendocino Farms in LA, but better. I had the ham + beecher's on whole grain and some potato chips. The bread was soft, but still grainy. Ham was pretty awesome, but the greens, onions, cheese, and aioli lacked punch. Still, it was a good sandwich and I ate it happily. Chips were awesome- perfect crunch, not oily at all, and just a touch of salt. I could wolf down a whole pound of those suckers. On a nice day, with the windows open and a book in my hand and a sandwich in the other, this place was perfect.

I went here last night for the first time..... and again tonight for the second time. SO GOOD!! my mouth is watering for another :) I got the Ham and Beechers with tomato bisque and then I got the chicken pesto... So yummy! it's hard to find a local, healthy sandwhich place with all local, organic ingredients! I love that they use good straight from a farm less than 30 miles away! And the prices are VERY reasonable for all of those reasons. I'm going to make it a goal to try everything on their menu at least once. Also---- the pictures don't do the sandwhich justice. ENJOY!!

Everything I've had here has been so delicious!!! Not only is it inside the adorable Melrose Market in Cap Hill, but they have such good soups, salads & sandwiches. Great produce/ingredients that are fresh and local! It's not super speedy, but it's worth the wait & there is some seating.

I was up in Seattle for work for three weeks and we had Homegrown quite a few times during that time. I have tried the Hummus + Roasted Red Pepper and the Portobello + Goat Cheese sandwiches, as well as the cute little bags of sea salt/black pepper potato chips. I wasn't a huge fan of the hummus sandwich since I'm a cheese person, but I LOVED the portobello/goat cheese sandwich. It had pesto and caramelized onions- a perfect combination of yumminess. Would I come back? Yes! I hope they open one of these in the Bay :)

So far I have only had the opportunity to try the breakfast sandwiches here, but if they are a good example of what one can expect from their menu, then I'm all in. They use 100% sustainable ingredients for all of their sandwiches and you can really taste the difference in the overall quality. Located just inside Capitol Hill's Melrose Market, this is a perfect place to grab a bite to eat while out doing some shopping or getting ready to hit the nightlife scene. Apparently they used to be open late, but the current 8:00am to 8:00pm daily schedule still makes for good availability. No matter what time of day you stop in, you will more than likely end up at the back of a waiting line, but don't worry too much, the staff gets through it pretty quickly. While you're waiting, you may want to take a look at the other shops in the market although be prepared to find even more delicious treasures you may not be able to avoid.

Just order the Bacon Egg and Beechers and have them add some hot sauce. It's amazing. The bread is perfectly toasted and that egg drips its yolk to perfection! Big fan of this months spicy Italian and hopefully they leave it permanently.

Everything here was just good, not great or especially memorable. However, I really enjoyed their accommodating assortment of gluten free, dairy free, other allergen-free options as well as their organic/local ingredients. I got the half size Portobello + Goat Cheese (but without bread, on greens): balsamic marinated portobello, goat cheese, pesto, caramelized red onion. This was really good although the pesto could've had more flavor. Husband got the turkey bacon avocado on a gluten free roll. This sandwich was kind of dry, and the bread was on the lower end of gluten free breads - dry and not a lot of flavor. We also shared the soup of the day - an Indian-inspired potato curry soup which was good. Overall, A+ for quality ingredients. B- for flavor.

I love this place! And this is coming from a girl who doesn't even really like sandwiches. The chicken pesto sandwich is my favorite. It's served warm and it's made with this garlic aioli that is really good. Yes, the sandwiches are expensive but for the quality of ingredients and the taste, it's worth it. YOU are worth it. I recommend anyone who wants to treat themselves to a nice lunch to stop at Homegrown.

Perfect for lunch. The portions are small, but the sandwiches are very tasty, and the ingredients are very fresh. The bread was very soft and grainy, and it went well w/ the greens, meat, cheese, etc. I've recommended this place a few times and people who've tried it have loved it. Only downsides: a bit pricy and portions aren't big enough, but it's great for lunch.

Looking for local places for lunch and came across this one. It's a sandwich shop, but as I try to follow the Primal lifestyle (no grains), my comments will be on their salad versions of the sandwiches. I ordered the turkey, bacon, and avocado samich (on mixed greens) as well as the portobello mushroom with goat cheese (also on mixed greens). The portobello mushroom salad was okay, the hazelnut/arugula pesto was a bit much. The turkey, bacon, and avocado salad was AMAZING. The melted gouda mixed with the turkey... OMG. There are no words to describe how good this salad was. You have to experience it!

My mister is wild about this place so we always grab lunch here when he takes me out from work. You feel good and nourished by everything. It isn't a steal by any means, but the food is fresh and the people behind the counter are sweet. Their bev selection is also excellent. Also the soup! So much the soup!

This is place is probably the epitome of conscious food. Everything is either organic, locally sourced, homegrown, homemade, or "sustainable". If that's the niche that you like to buy into, then you'd probably love this place. For me however, I can't taste the difference of a free range chicken egg to save my life, and I have my own views on "sustainability", so I didn't really care much about their gimmick talk. Now let's talk strictly about the food. I ordered a reuben revised on french bread while my friend had a turkey avocado bacon sandwich on wheat and a risotto soup. The soup was a little bland, in my opinion. The reuben sandwich was definitely flavorful, but in the way that the sweetness of the cranberry sauce and the sweet&sour flavor of the sauerkraut overpowered the taste of the pastrami -- I didn't really get to appreciate the pastrami (too sweet!), and gave the sandwich to my friend after a couple bites. The turkey avocado bacon sandwich that I took from my friend in return was definitely better. The fresh taste of avocado complimented the natural savory tastes of the turkey meat and bacon, giving a good combination of tastes to the sandwich. What was most special about their sandwiches, aside from their fresh ingredients, is perhaps their homemade bread. It's airy and soft, allowing you to bite into the sandwiches easily. This sandwich place is definitely expensive. For $7, you get a half-sandwich about the size of your palm. Granted, it's in melrose triangle, and it's expected that you have to pay more for the fair-trade/locally sourced produce. But it's nothing that you can't replicate at home. You'd be just as "sustainable" if you buy from the farmers market, and use reusable plates.

The sandwiches here are always very fresh and delicious. The restaurant has doors that open to the street, gives it since feel. Outdoor seating is minimal but a nice choice. The staff is super inviting and kind! I'll definitely be back.

Oh boy, the special broccoli with caramelized onion sandwich blew me away. I love how they cut the sandwich in half and put it in a little bag. This reminds me of MOS burger in Japan and also it's easy to eat and mess-free! Will have to try all the other vegetarian options!

Delicious and quick service! Fresh sandwiches and salads - very refreshing on a hot day! It's unfortunate there is so much construction going on in the area because I feel like they are not getting as much foot traffic as they could.

Homegrown was such a hidden gem while visiting seattle, and staying in capitol hill. Walking the blocks, someone pointed us in the direction of this co-op, and homegrown especially. It is located along with some sidewalk dining, tucked in with what looked like a great butcher shop, a wine shop where we did find some incredible wine finds, a cheese shop, a high end dinner place, and a cool crafty store upstairs. But, what stole the show here was the food. We arrived mid afternoon, and some of the more popluar menu items were sold out, but the super-friendly cashier, a young asian woman (who was patient, friendly, and super informative), was nice enough to help piece together a few sandwiches to our liking. The bread was fresh, the sandwiches served warm, and the flavors were awesome. For lunch, in the area, go nowhere else, this is your spot!

This location is inside Melrose Market. You order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. The sandwiches come in a small or large. Since we were on a food crawl for the next several hours, we stuck with a couple of smalls. I was surprised the ROAST PORK (stumptown coffee + cayenne rubbed pork loin, pickled red onion, apple butter, mixed greens and sage aioli) came as a cold sandwich. It was also also fairly dry and the wholegrain bread drowned out the fillings even more. Disappointing to say the least. Fortunately, we also had the HAM + BEECHER'S (ham, beecher's flagship, shallot relish, mixed greens and sage aioli). This one was a hot sandwich with gooey melted cheese. Really good!

Real. Damn. Tasty. Visited Seattle a few weeks back and we were lucky enough to stop here. For one, the entire open-air market was absurdly cute. You couldn't help but want to spend all day in there. For two, a gluten-free AND vegan bread option? You kiddin' me? FIVE STARS! Staff was friendly, food was very quick and prices were great. A sandwich like that would cost double where I live. Very happy we got a chance to experience the local flavor!

  • Liz E.

Overall solid, but not my favorite. Sandwiches are a bit bland, bread should be crustier, not enough meat and too much bread. I've gotten a sandwich that had an undercooked egg ( runny white) one time but generally I enjoy the food there. I wish they would team up with rain shadow and offer one or two of their sandwiches because rainshadow sandwiches are much better! IMO, the meat is kind of bland tasting too. I think they should add more acidity to the aiolis and dressings and more smokiness or spice/umami to the meats, and more salt to everything. I also think there's something off about the bread. And why is it vegan? The store has 0 vegan sandwiches so why bother? Maybe it would have a better texture with egg instead of unhealthy vegetable oil.

All the sandwiches are just too damn good! The beverage selection is unique and refreshing. Chips and cookies are good. Salads are subpar to everything else but you don't go for the salad.

  • Andy S.

I give this 3 stars mainly because I'm not a fan of paying $12 for just a sandwich and then having to pay extra for chips, etc. However, with that said, holy crap is it a good sandwich. Had the turkey bacon avocado and that was one hella good sandwich. My girlfriend also got the roast pork which had great flavor. If you can stomach paying a lot for sandwiches then you will be extremely happy here cause it was outrageously delicious.

The Cobb salad was a joke. I couldn't believe it was $10 + tax for a tiny little plastic box. It tasted good but was so expensive. I feel completely ripped off. Off the lunchtime list.

If it were possible to give 10 stars I would. Not only is the food incredible, (especially the avocado, egg and cheese sandwich!), but the service is beyond compare. Every employee that I have dealt with at this location has been amazingly friendly and has delivered exceptional service. I've had a rough few months and their kindness every morning has been one of the things that has gotten me through this hard time.

I was introduced to this area the last time I was in Seattle and loving it, I decided to come back. Homegrown has a small space at the front of the building and makes delicious sandwiches. I got the Reuben Revised and it was great. I wasn't expecting the flavor of the cranberry but it was a nice addition. The wholegrain bread was great too. Nice little spot for a delicious sandwich.

Well, I guess I should not be surprised. After the terrible wasted lunch hour I wrote about, I received a crocodile-teared response with a promise of sandwich coupons. I dutifully emailed them at the address provided and--SHOCKINGLY!!!-- no response. You folks are lame.

  • Sarah M.

Pork roast sandwich was a total let down. It tasted nothing like pork roast; it was more like turkey meat and the apple butter was too strong. The quality (lacking ingredients between the bread) didn't reflect the ridiculous price. $12 for a full sandwich! half (for $7) would not be sufficient, AT ALL. Boyfriend thought his egg & avocado sandwich was amazing however. I have to agree, it's pretty tasty with a sprinkle of their salt. Bottom line, in a city filled with sandwich shops, your money is better spent elsewhere.

We stopped by on the way to the airport. I guess I just need to get used to Seattle prices, but our sandwich was quite small for the amount we paid. I know the ingredients are all top notch, which is great... but still =\ I don't know... I actually really loved the architecture of the building as well. And I liked window shopping the other businesses here. Too bad I had a long plane right, or else I could've brought back some home!

Perfect when you want to grab a sandwich on the go. The soup's are delicious as well. The ingredients are locally sourced and extremely fresh. The sandwiches are a bit on the pricey side, but I have never regretted it. The quality of their sandwiches is worth every penny. NOM.

Homegrown is probably the only sandwich place I regularly go to in Seattle. I usually visit their cap hill location, but have been to their fremont spot as well. The sandwiches are fantastic, as are the soups, and the nice staff that works there. As a vegetarian, I always find what to eat on their rotating specials menu or fixed menu. My favorites are the peanut butter and jelly sandwich (yes, it's on the kid's menu... But what adult doesn't like pb+j), the cream cheese + veggie, and vegetarian specials (I loved the spicy snap pea). Homegrown is a regular on my restaurant rotation, and I will continue going back to fulfill my sandwich needs :).

Turkey bacon avocado sandwich was amazing. Bread and aioli really stands out but for $12? That's way too expensive. Charming location, right inside Melrose Market.

  • Tyler L.

Good food and I appreciate the sustainability angle. However, they are fairly slow and the high price does not be fit the small sandwiches. They are quite good and stuffed with tasty ingredients, but for the price, I expect more than a tiny half sandwich. The coffee was decent too, but don't even think about asking for sugar in paper packaging.

PROS: The sandwiches are abso-freakin-lutely delicious (no exaggeration). My husband got me the vegetarian one (seasonal squash & snap pea pesto). Normally I never order the vegetarian option but I'm so glad he did. It was so good (even better than the roast pork which is what my husband got). Make sure you ask for the tomatillo jalapenos spread on the side. Luckily we did that because it was really spicy (I enjoy spicy but it would have taken away from the sandwich. CONS: Their sandwiches are on the expensive side. Otherwise I would have given them 5 stars.

As a newbie to the Seattle food market staffed on a local project for 3 months, I was eager to explore some organic, sustainably raised, gluten free dining options near me downtown. Homegrown was nearby with good reviews so I decided to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the menu- large enough to offer a variety of tasty options covering the usual suspects with some gourmet flair (elevated versions of a BLT, a classic turkey, roast beef, etc.) while offering unique choices, such as the pork tenderloin sandwich, but not so large as to inspire distrust in execution or quality. I chose the roast beef and Swiss and eagerly dove in. I'm a sucker for fresh arugula and Homegrown certainly delivered. The wad of tightly packed greens was deliciously peppery and cut through the richness of the roast beef and melted Swiss. The beef itself was succulent and tender, and the horseradish sauce was on point. The multigrain bread was toasted well, with a crusty exterior and a nutty interior with the perfect texture to partner with roast beef. A truly excellent sandwich and I was hard pressed to save half for an afternoon snack. I was also pleased that they offered pure coconut water as a beverage- no added sugars and never frozen/from concentrate. I have only one issue was more on the service side- as a first timer to Homegrown I did not realize that gluten-free bread was available and it is not overwhelmingly apparent on the menu. In fact, the cashier only gave me the choices of white or multigrain when I ordered. This small issue isn't going to stop be from going back, and certainly doesn't compromise the great review this food deserved.

I am writing to unfortunately say that the salad in which I was provided for my order was inedible. I was given a salad from the grab and go fridge even though I took the time to pre-order online. The salad is black and tastes like mold. I was hoping that the fact that I was handed a pre-packaged salad was normal, but the server said my ticket didn't print and they didn't have it ready. I had to throw out my entire order.

American; New Ambiance: 4 Food: 5 Value: 3 One of the trendy eateries and the new Melrose Market, Capitol Hill. Hailed as the new Pikes Place, this Melrose Market houses several awesome eateries. Homegrown is one of them. Billed as the most sustainable sandwich shop in town, everything is local, organic, and sustainably farmed. All would be for not if the taste was found wanting; however, Homegrown delivers with fantastic flavors. My favorite is the breakfast sandwich made with Beecher's flagship cheddar: creamy deliciousness. I have one piece of advice: go with the French roll. Though the whole wheat might appeal to the health conscious part of your mind, your taste buds will thank you for choosing the French roll.

Yes, the sandwiches are good. At least my turkey bacon avocado sandwich was. The bread was nice and toasty, the bacon was quite tasty, and it's hard to go wrong with avocado. The seating is limited, so it's not a great place for large groups. But the setting inside Melrose Market is pretty neat - it's got a rustic feel to it, which kind of reflects its sandwiches. I can appreciate that it's local / sustainable / organic food, but you'll have to pay for it. $12 for a full sandwich (the half sandwich wouldn't have filled me up for lunch) is pretty steep for me. I mean, if it's local, shouldn't that cut down on the shipping costs? I think part of what you're paying for is feeling good about the food you eat. But hey, whatever floats your boat. 5-star sandwich for a 3-star price = 4 stars. I'd go back, though. Just not frequently enough to put a hole in my wallet.

  • Kyle O.

Jus had the turkey, bacon, and avocado sandwich (their best seller) and thought it was just okay. Here's why: *Turkey: on the better side of the deli meat spectrum...but not as good as your thanksgiving dinner variety *Bacon and avocado: good! *Gouda: couldn't taste it *Whole grain bread: good *Roasted garlic aioli: overpowering mayo taste - took over the flavor profile as a whole Also- the prices are a bit high at $12 a sandwich, but I guess it is explainable because the product is local/organic/fresh. Although I like the concept and would like to try another sandwich here, I have to give it just 3-stars til next time!

I stopped here for a breakfast sandwich during a weekend visit in Seattle. I was very convinced from both the menu and the cafe appearance. Lots of sunny window tables, fresh ingredients, and they make their bread on site. Man, was I seriously underwhelmed. When you pay $12 for a sandwich, you expect it to blow your socks off and do a tap dance for you. It was good, but it unfortunately was nothing I couldn't replicate at home. The sage aoli didn't pack much flavor, and the yolk on my egg was pretty chalky. They were also seriously backed up. There was no coffee, no lids, and no sleeves. I told them about the coffee...and waited. I got my sandwich. Still no coffee. Told them again - nothing. Finished my sandwich, 30 minutes after ordering, and still...no coffee. Seriously? A cafe that waits until they're completely out to even start brewing more? I seriously expected more common sense. I don't regret coming here, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone until they get their kitchen better sorted out.

Ordered an avocado, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. It was a bit spicy I must say, just a tad bit. I thoroughly enjoyed it. They also serve breakfast throughout the day which is nice for those of you who like breakfast food. The setting is sort of nice too, high stools and they also have booths. The sweet potato risotto wasn't that good in my opinion. Anyhow hope that helps.

The turkey, avocado and bacon sandwich was pretty good. It is quite pricey though and parking can get a little tough in this area.

I'll be honest with you...I'm not a huge sandwich fan. I really only eat them if I'm in the mood for one (let's say, grilled cheese), or I've resorted to eating Subway for work lunch. But Homegrown has won my heart. I usually go with the turkey, bacon, and Swiss (warm) sandwich on potato bread (it comes with avocado, but I leave this off). Man, this thing is oink-riffic. You can get half a sandwich and accompany it with a side of soup or chips, or you can get a full sandwich. Seriously, so f'ing good. The perfect amount of turkey, bacon, lettuce, and melty Swiss cheese. *mouth waters* That potato bread is something else, too. So freakin' delicious. Even if the food wasn't so tasty, I'd probably still come here just to sit on the outdoor patio (adjoined with the indoor seating area) and people watch. I love being in Melrose Market. The whole area has such a great vibe.

Still such a solid place. After writing more than 1000 reviews on Yelp, I want to get back to updating some that are outdated or deserve continued recognition for being a bad ass business. So Homegrown? You're on the list! With great sandwiches, an adorable seating area and a convenient Cap Hill location, why wouldn't I adore this place? I do miss their late night hours but eating a grilled sandwich at 3AM isn't good for my gut anyway! This is a great spot for meetings and if you're ever there in time for the breakfast sandwich, GET IT!

I love just about everything in Melrose Market, and Homegrown is no different. While I do wish that they offered more and more innovative vegetarian sandwich options, I admire their varied omnivorous selections. I tried their version of a Reuben the other day - HOLY SHIT AMAZING. Addictive. Meanwhile, a cold pork sandwich was not as inspired, but still filling and wholesome. The only disappointing part of the meal was a creamy artichoke-based soup. I liked that the soup had chunky bits of artichoke in it, but the mixture was unfortunately bland. I had to add lots of salt. Otherwise, fast service, nice employees, plenty of seating, rustic wooden tables, and lots of compostable or reusable elements to their dishes, etc. I'll be back!

Way overpriced for the quality of product served. They don't mix the salad for you and then serve it on a plate which makes it hard to coat the salad with the thick salad dressing. The sandwiches are okay. Better service would also be appreciated.

Talk about amazing gluten free sandwiches! So many delicious options and most of the time they're so much food that a half-sandwich is plenty. This particular location can get a little crowded that leads to hard to find seating.

Homegrown has slowly but surely won me over, and this location, smack dab in Capitol HIll's foodie mecca, Melrose Market, is pretty much as close as a sandwich shop can get to destination dining. Where's the beef? If for you that means organic and sustainable, then here we found it, and then some. We ordered and split a large Roast Beef and Swiss and a Pastrami Sandwich (both on the Rosemary Multigrain Bread) and found that these delicious sandwiches had original flavors to spare. I think what set this lunch date over the top for us is its location, which included outdoor urban seating for a sunny day. Since ours was a Seattle cloudy day, we opted for the great indoor seating in the Melrose Market with its exposed brick and cathedral ceilings and the very cool option (which we exercised) to take our Homegrown sandwiches over to Bar Ferdinand and enjoy them with a glass of wine. Here we had a front row seat to all the foodie types coming in and ordering at Rain Shadow Meats or the Calf and the Kid, while just across the way, chefs were prepping for evening dinner at Sitka and Spruce. Nice!

I'll admit that Homegrown was not my first choice for my only-one-lunch-in-Seattle-this-visit meal, but through an interesting turn of events, I ended up scoring a sandwich here for the road trip back down to Portland. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised based on the overall rating of this spot. Homegrown immediately gets extra stars from me for being conscious about where it sources its food components, and does a good job of communicating that to the customer. The meats are mostly local, many are sustainable, and the veggies are all organic. The breads are again local, and vegan options are on the menu. There's even a matrix of ingredients on the wall so you know what comes from where. Soon will come a day when this is standard. For now, kudos to those pushing the trend forward. I'll always pay extra to eat non-industrial food. As to the food itself, my sandwich was definitely tasty. I had the ham and Beecher's cheese toasted with a shallot jam, greens and mustard on the large ciabatta. This grilled bit of indulgence was exactly what you'd expect from reading the description above. Decadent, salty, cheesy and slightly sweet. So tasty! It's on the pricier side, but as noted above, I will pay extra for good products (plus they simply taste better). Service was passable during my pre-lunch-hour lunch purchase. I was one of a few folks in there and was treated amicably. I'd definitely stop in here again for lunch any time. Ham and cheese is an easy way to my heart.

$6 or $7 for an interesting sandwich with local ingredients is hard to beat. You can also get a larger size of any sandwich for $10 or $11 but the small size is more than enough for the average appetite (men included). I have always felt that the sandwiches could be seasoned better, but they are still very good. They also serve soups and salads if you're into that kind of thing. I love the Stumptown and cayenne-rubbed roast pork sandwich for lunch and all the breakfast sandwiches are winners, but my favorite is the avocado/fried egg/hot sauce/gouda. The setting (inside the charming Melrose Market) is great, they serve beer and Stumptown coffee, and there's outdoor seating on nice days.

Just OK. I tried the grilled cheese and the Portobello. The Portobello was better. A bit overpriced.

It really is quite good. The sandwich is fresh and warm. It packed in a lot of salty flavor for one sandwich, so we were thirsty for a while. Rather pricey for one sandwich. I forget how much it was, but you would think they would at least give you a bag of chips, small side, or drink for that price. I probably wouldn't go out of my way next time to come here. It's good for what it is, which is a quick bite on the go.

Amazing breakfast sandwiches and great coffee. Limited choices but what they have is top notch.

I was hesitant to try Homegrown due to prices and what I had heard about long waits and mixing up orders. I have to say, now that I've tried it, I was left not feeling too impressed. The small sandwiches are reasonably priced (I thought, at least), and a roasted pork sandwich and side of chips only set me back $8. I'm cool with paying a little extra for organic/local/sustainable, but the flavors seemed really out of whack for me. My pork sandwich came with pickled red onion, spring greens, and apple butter: the sweetness of the apple was really overwhelming, and combined with the onions made the sandwich a very mushy and soft/squishy ordeal. If I came and tried this sandwich again, I'd definately ask for Dijon mustard instead, and raw onion instead of pickled. I'd also ask that the bread get a quick toast before being slapped together. The food is definately solid. I wouldn't avoid coming here, but it wouldn't be my first choice. I can get a much better tasting sandwich delivered from Jimmy Johns, though, and at a better price, which makes me a little sad.

As their moto says: Sustainable Sandwich Shop! I love that the ingredients taste fresh! I ordered the half Turkey, Bacon and avocado and loved it =) My friend that lives in Ellensburg ordered a couple so she could take them for the road. The down side is that there isn't much seating. However, if you grab a seat, it's a wonderful ambiance. I really like the place and hope to come here again! I highly recommend it!

For one year I was in a job that ran 8:30am to 9pm at night. Stressed out of my mind, I came to this Homegrown more morning then not. They were great about taking my takeout orders over the phone at 8am, and always had incredible breakfast sandwiches to offer. The cost is high, but in my particular situation, it was definitely worth it. If you are looking for a high quality sandwich, they serve breakfast sandwiches all day - I recommend the egg and avocado.

Ate at Homegrown for my last meal before flying out of Seattle (on vacation). I ordered the pastrami sandwich, which was decent, but lacked pastrami. My mushroom soup seriously lacked flavor. I went to the counter to complain, but was told that they don't add salt to the soup. Seriously! They should warn you before purchasing the soup. It was as if they put mushrooms in some water. It lacked so much flavor that even after I added salt, it was still bland. As a side note, I do like the building that Homegrown is nestled in. There is a butcher shop and a cool little store on the second level that is easy to miss. As for Homegrown, I wouldn't dissuade anyone from eating there, just skip on the mushroom soup.

I love their hot sandwiches and breakfast, but their toaster has been broken for the last 2 weeks. Its a shame, with all the traffic in Melrose Market since Starbucks Reserve opened, they could have bought a few toasters.

Exhausted from a half marathon and dazed by sun, beer, and naked bike riders, my friends and I stumbled into Homegrown during the Fremont Solstice Parade in search of a Real Meal. Not ice cream. Not something fried. Real food. Our sandwiches were just what the doctor ordered: hearty but fresh, substantial but not weighty, filling but not grossly so. After a few days of avoiding unfamiliar/risky foods in anticipation of the race, it was wonderful to sink my teeth into the summer seasonal sandwich, savory and sweet. If I lived in Fremont, I suspect I'd be here all the time. Since I live halfway across the country, I'm just going to have to file it away for future Seattle visits.

I've yet to try a place in Melrose Market that I don't enjoy. Homegrown is no exception. Its tucked away in the corner of the building, but it enjoys the same ambiance and feel as the rest of the establishments. The first thing to love about Homegrown is the menu. Chances are extremely high that you will find a sandwich you can sink your teeth into. They have some staples (reuben, grilled cheese, turkey bacon avocado) but they also have some oddballs, like the Bluffernutter, which includes marshmallow paste, bacon and crunchy peanut butter (Yes, yes I know it's on the kids menu. That's not going to stop me from ordering it). The sandwiches come out with a decent amount of speed. Faster than I expected for what was going into my pork loin sandwich (delicious). I was a bit disappointed in the size when it ultimately arrived. I paid over 13 dollars for the full size and didn't exactly leave full. I love the sandwich, but I'm a bit of a value seeker, so at this point no fifth star for Homegrown. Still highly suggested if you want an awesome sandwich and agree with their sustainable and organic mission statement

I guess you can say this is an auto go to for lunch. Its close, convenient and the food is good. It would be 4 stars but 3 stars for the price. All their sandwiches are delicious and super hearty. BUT.....for a small sandwich and a soda I spent 15 bucks. How is that possible for what you would call a lunch/fast food place??? If you are willing to drop 15 bucks for lunch everyday, I highly recommend the watermelon caprese sandwich... which is truly one of a kind!!! The flavor is outstanding and by far more interesting than anything else i've had in a sandwich. Otherwise......go down the street and pick your self up a WF sandwich.. Just as good :)

For a sandwich...this is good. All top-notch ingredients. Sourced locally and treated perfectly. The sandwich itself was great too! I love the laid back nature here. I love that they sell beer with the food. It was, overall, a great lunch spot for me. Would definitely go here often if I lived nearby.

The best breakfast sandwich I've ever eaten. The Pacific NW works its witch craft on thick bacon, and makes me like it, the fried egg and beechers flagship cheddar complimented each other well, as the egg wasn't overly oily, and the cheese was sharp enough and not overly creamy to overtake the egg. The aioli is the one, it makes the sandwich. Oh, and the french bread... their french bread is smaller and way denser, and its able to contain all the flavors, while also being crusty, soft, and just very pleasant for lack of a better word. This was the best french bread I've had. All in all, the best breakfast sandwich I've had, and i docked a star only because I felt its a bit expensive for the amount of food you get. I also wished the egg was fried over easy, as the gooey egg is the best for this kind of bread and sandwich, but it was still excellent. The food is 5 star caliber for artisan sandwiches.

Came in for a look around the market and saw this sandwich shop and one look at the menu I had to try their pork sandwich. But it was no normal pork sandwich, it was coffee and pepper rubbed on whole wheat served with Apple butter and fresh greens. Its was OMG good. While pricier than your chain sandwich places it was worth every bite.

Homegrown offers an amazing variety of delicious sandwiches, soups, and salads that are tasty and gluten-free/vegan friendly. I had the gluten-free chicken pesto sandwich and a gluten-free chocolate chip cookie- both were scrumptious. The prices are a bit high, but you get what you pay for in terms of quality. Highly recommend.

A five star review based on half of a breakfast sandwich. It was THAT amazing. I had been intending to get to Melrose Market sometime soon and yesterday happened to stumble upon it during my daily lunch walk. I couldn't resist trying a few things while I was there - including a breakfast sandwich from Homegrown and then a glass of wine for dessert at Bar Ferd'nand. Anyway - I chose the Smoked Ham, Gouda, Fried Egg and Sage Aoili breakfast sandwich on French Roll and it was perfection. I was literally tearing off peices of the roll to soak up every last bit of gorgeously cooked egg off of my plate. I cannot wait to go back and try everything on their menu. If it wasn't raining, I would walk back today...probably for the best!

Everything was so delicious, we didn't even mind the construction that was going on next to us. The ingredients were so fresh and the half size size sandwich was enough for lunch. Where I am from, it is hard to find a place like this! Quite a gem in Seattle!

Do you want an awesome almost home made kinda sand which minus the fact that it's 1000000 times more awesome??? Homegrown is your place to go. What makes this even more awesome is that just reading the menu itself seems pretty tasty. :) You will not disapointed in any of the soups or sandwhiches.

I've finally remembered to actually write a review for Homegrown after now eating here at the Melrose Market location five times. Maybe the ginko biloba tablets are finally working! In addition to sandwiches, soup and salads are available at Homegrown. Three times, I have ordered the Turkey, Bacon and Avocado sandwich. I especially like the toasted bread and bacon. The bread was so good that I wouldn't even have known that it was vegan! Now, as to the avocado in the sandwich, I've grown to not like it so much. I'm a big avocado fan, but prefer it unadulterated. At Homegrown, the avocado is a guacamole-like spread (sans cilantro). The "guacamole" tastes OK (hint of garlic), but it gives the sandwich a mushy rather undesirable texture. The Ham & Beecher's sandwich, with Beecher's cheese, a shallot relish and sage aioli is a better pick. Each time I've eaten here, I've also ordered a cup of their daily soup with my sandwich. They're sometimes pretty good. Though the menu claims that they serve potato bread with the soup, I've never received any potato bread. The soup I had most recently was a quinoa potato soup. I liked that the potatoes were cut into small bit-size pieces, but did note that they were unpeeled. The soup had a nice hearty texture, but was bland. Uncharacteristically for me, I actually had to add salt (and black pepper for good measure). On the other hand, though bland, the soup was spicy-chili hot. While there are only three tables, there is counter seating available, if that works for you.

I'm honestly not even sure if there is a word great enough to describe how amazing chad and the catering was. I had a huge wedding, I didn't even have a thought in my head about the food the entire time because chad, and his staff, were so efficient kind, and seemed like they just generally loved what they were doing. You might think "it's just sandwiches" but no. The food was so delicious and they make a funky upbeat catering choice in to a fabulous and beautiful spread that friends and family are still raving about, pretty sure chad just got this company a few more regular customers!! Allergy and vegetarian options pleased all, even some very picky people. I would recommend this place for catering or a quick bite to anyone without hesitation. You guys rock!!!!!

So, the food is really good. It's gotten better even since my last review. It's also sourced well and I truly appreciate the time and effort they've put into sustainability. It makes me sad to write this review, but I am really tired of the service. Can't you even pretend to be nice? I don't care if you don't like me. It's kind of the main part of your job to be a decent human being if you're working at the register. My three stars are for: Deliciousness, sustainability, and the fact that not everyone there is unpleasant.

Home of the sustainable sandwich...you're probably wondering what a sustainable sandwich is. It's made with sustainable, gourmet ingredients and uses green, eco-friendly materials for packaging. The menu is simple, choose salad or sandwich, size, type of bread for sandwiches (potato or whole grain), add sides if desired. Gluten free bread is available. Sandwiches include Reuben, roasted beet, hummus, ham & cheese (Beecher's Cheese). Drinks are all natural (no Diet Coke). Stumptown Coffee is served. * Broccoli melt ($5 Small/$9 Large) s3-media1.px.yelpcdn.com… : a toasted sandwich with a thick layer of broccoli, caramelized onion jam and a bit of raw-milk jack. The potato bread was nice, soft and fresh. The broccoli wasn't soggy. It felt healthy - lots of broccoli and not much cheese. A melt should be cheesy though, shouldn't it? There's limited seating inside. It's inside Melrose Market, which is a mini public marketplace/food hall and a nice place to browse.

I love this place! Turkey, Bacon, Avocado is my go-to favorite. Everything is really fresh and the bread (both the multi grain and the potato) is incredible. Great philosophy backing up their business and tasty to boot! Big thumbs up for Homegrown!

Easily the best Turkey Bacon Avocado sandwhich I've ever had. I almost said best sandwhich, but Paseo holds that place in my heart. It's easily as good as Paseo. I'm still giving it 5 stars for a $10 dollar sandwhich. Yup, that good. The ingredients are amazingly fresh, delicious bread, nummy pickle...always ready fast with a smile. Unrelated to the sandwhich, I love Homegrown because of it's spectacular view. Of the hot butchers over at Rain Shadow across the Market. Bearded men that chop up pigs and cows for a living? Yes please. If they're reading this I can suggest a first date spot that is close to your work and sells killer sandwiches... Organic sandwiches with a view.
