Love making this my first stop on a happy hour crawl! The cocktails are nice and strong. They do a lot of pre-prohibition drinks which I can find very amusing sometimes :) I also love how cool every bartender has been so far. There may not be food but there is definitely atmosphere. It reminds me a little of the tiny alley bars in Nola but less sketchy... ahhh

Sometimes in Ballard there's a bad moon. This usually happens on a random Wednesday night, and is heralded by more people being more drunk than usual, louder and more aggressive, throwing trash in the streets and kicking in the Jack O Lantern you placed in front of your apartment building. On bad moon ballard nights avoid the Hazelwood, as it becomes a sort of depressing, over-drunk, unemployed, place with who'd rather be drinking Rainier but hawked their dead uncle's gold teeth to pay for obscure rye instead. On all other nights it can be pretty fun. Neighbours meet here, and that's always a good sign.

Great cocktails and an excellent bartender! The place itself is... well, better in the dark, for sure, but the drinks are spot-on.

Hazlewood is a treat! A delightful little nook in the heart of Ballard. I went for a walk around the neighborhood with friends and popped in here for a quick Happy Hour aperitif and was pleasantly surprised at the coziness of this charming little bar. Now remember it is small, I'd say smaller maybe the smallest lounge/bar I've been in Seattle actually. it kind of reminds me of a narrow New York style loft, with dark interiors and vintage flair. The downstairs is standing room only + a window seat, but there is a lofted upstairs, sporting a few chaise lounges and whimsical mounted candelabras. The best part: the woman waiting on us let us know you can reserve the lofted area for parties. It's not large mind you, but it would be a fun space to invite a few close friends for an intimate get-together.

I love Hazelwood. I've often pondered moving to Ballard so I can go there more regularly, because it's one of those kinds of bar/lounges that you can go to multiple times a week and still really like it. My go to drink there is the horse's neck, especially during the summer, but honestly it's a good year round drink too. I haven't tried many of their other drinks but the friends I take here always seem to really like them. The atmosphere is awesome - just enough vintage touches to make it charming and homey, and not so much that it comes off as disingenuous. The bartenders are always great, friendly and fair when there's a ton of people vying for drinks.

We stopped in here for a drink with friends on Friday, and I liked it a lot. Yes the space is small, but we had ~10 people with us and were able to sit comfortably (partially because we aren't shy about sitting very close to each other). This wouldn't be a good place for large groups that aren't comfortable with each other. The drinks were good, nothing amazing, and it's more or less self-service.... but hey, it's never very far from the bar! I would come back here for a drink.

It's funny to think I'd have so much to say about a place so small! I popped into Hazlewood a few weeks ago with friends and have been raving about it ever since. Their house cocktail list is chock full of drinks that are tasty and creative. I have to make more trips here just to try them all! It's also great that if you're looking for a cheap alternative, they have Schlitz! ha. There's only enough room for 8-15 people in this teeny tiny bar. Luckily though, they have outdoor space that doubles their total occupancy if the weather is nice. I love how when I came in here I could tell that the few folks who were inside enjoying drinks were regulars. Bars are great like that... you can always make new friends and tell if a place is good or not if they have friendly regulars. It certainly helped that the service was fast and friendly too!

Ballard feeling a little too wholesome lately? Hazelwood is stroller-free and smoker-friendly. It's a tiny place with an elegantly dingy upstairs lounge and a small sidewalk seating area. The bartenders are meticulous and skilled, so there may be a short wait for your drinks--these things aren't coming out of a well gun, you know! Best of all is the all-day Sunday happy hour. Drop by for a drink after shopping the Ballard Sunday Farmers Market. After a morning of organic veggie shopping, pure-bred dogs and folk music; Hazelwood is just what the doctor ordered.

The cocktails are incredible! You can tell that the bartenders take a lot of pride in their craft. The water, however, had horse meat in it. Didn't ask for it, didn't care for it.

Sexy atmosphere. Ballard's own France. Often full of people on a weekend night, but always worth giving up elbow room for those amazing drinks. Even just a whisky ginger awes my tastebuds there. This is a great place to not be shy and make acquiantance with someone. Really super carved skulls on the walls...up high.

I finally tried Hazlewood! I didn't realize until getting to the bar that THIS was where all those people hang out outside in the little barred off area next to Azteca. I get it now. The bar is very cute inside. Small as other reviewers mentioned but with a charming Euorpean feel. Prices are reasonable. Hazlewood reminds me of a Speakeasy with creative cocktails leaning heavily toward whiskey and gin. My boyfriend had a gin and tonic and swore it was gin on the rocks. I guess we got our money's worth! I had the peach bellini which was mostly champagne with just a hint of peach. The bartenders were friendly and it wasn't as packed as I expected. (This was the Saturday of Halloween weekend.) People were dressed up and in good spirits. It was fun! I would go back. Better for a romantic rendezvous than for chilling with a group of friends but definitely has its niche as a great pre or post dinner drink spot.

This is an elitist, intimate, speak-easy-ish place to go and feel cool because everyone else is at BalMar while you're at this chill, "down to earth" place. (Not.) 1. Tiny. Enough for maybe 30 people tops. The downstairs is the size of my kitchen and the upstairs is the size of a tiny ass living room. 2. Where the hipsters go to hang out when they want to leave Cap Hill. 3. Delicious drinks, though. Not my scene, but I can see its appeal.

We stumbled upon this place when my gf was looking for a late-night speakeasy style of bar. And man did this deliver. It wasn't too difficult to find, but it's fairly small for most bars. Show up early (or late like us) to get a seat upstairs. There was only one person working the whole bar, but he's serious. I can't recall what my gf had, but I ordered the Blood and Sand. Wow, that was a good, but stiff drink. Did I say we LOVED the atmosphere?

  • Gene B.

Well, what's not to like? Inventive cocktails, fun and informative staff and a beautiful, albeit small, space. I especially enjoyed the Tapitio Moustache- a Pacifico with a float of habenero- infused tequila on top. Delicious and fun!

Great small spot. NIce cozy outside patio, downstairs is nice, and upstairs loungy area is great too. The vibe is true Ballard, the Dark&Stormy's are amazing, and it's a great place. Definitely worth a visit to get the true feel for ballard (Hint: it's not like Bastille Back Bar....)

NO!! The drinks are Not. Good. They use canned juices and it absolutely tastes that way. The ambiance is fine, the upstairs is fine, the location is much better than they deserve. This is a lousy excuse for a "craft cocktail" bar. It's just plain laziness or stinginess that would prevent them from using fresh juices - it's just not that hard, and it will make all your drinks taste infinitely better. We have been there 3 times now, ordered different drinks every time, were always unable to finish them because they were horrible. No matter who suggests it, we will not go back. It's just not worth putting our taste buds through it again. Also, "speakeasy-type" is accurate -- this is not a speakeasy. Go to Bathtub Gin & Co. in Belltown -- THAT's a speakeasy (and they know how to make a cocktail).

Big fan. I will get crowded so come early. All the cocktails I tried here were outstanding. I was a huge fan of the dark and stormy. After a few of these I asked the bartender for something different. She recommended a drink, while delicious, I don't know in good conscience I can post the name of it here. All though nothing would make me happier if a legion of yelpers went here and ordered said drink. Oh and they have a peep hole. It's upstairs in the back. If people are sitting at the couch in front of it, ask them to move for a moment so you can "peek". Great bar. I'll be back again. And again and again ...

$2 off their specialty drinks during happy hour! F-yeah! The drinks are expertly made and taste amazing. The space is cute and the bartender was nice and helpful, even enlightening us with some scotch/whiskey information while making our drinks. Loved the intimate feel and everyone around us was laid back and friendly (I don't get all these anti-hipster reviews).

I went here yesterday for a happy hour birthday drink with my friend. Never been, and she suggested that we go. It was perfect. I ordered a grapefruit cocktail, I can't remember the name, but it was DEE LI CIOUS! Calm, cool, relaxed place. I will most certainly go back.

I visited Hazelwood exactly the way I DID NOT want to: already a tad tipsy, rowdy, and with a crowd. Nonetheless, an excellent time was had by all. Elegant yet rustic, the drinks were as good as they sounded. Intricately etched skulls lining the upper walls perfectly captured the setting of rough & refined. And a happy hour all day Sunday made me giddily happy. The only peculiar bit was the bathroom. A little scuffed, a little dark, it got the job done but was a surprise in a place that has everything else just right.

Popped in a few days ago with a friend for happy hour. Even though I spent more that I wanted to, it was money well spent. I had 2 of the Marguerite's Punch, which I learned was named after the bartenders neighbor in the South. Its probably my favorite drink ever. Not too sweet, but crazy on flavor and booze. woooooo! When I told the bartender I was a fan of a particular special liqueur, he made up a FANTASTIC drink on the spot that involved it. It was amazing. I wish I had written down what it had in it, and I hope he remembers next time I go back :)

This place is wonderful.. from the range of people that come in to the atmosphere. It get's really busy though and may have a hard time finding a seat if you don't come early enough. But the drinks....Oh, this is why they come! VERY strong and TOTALLY unique. Plus, the bartenders are creative enough that if you tell them what you like/dislike, they'll make something up for you!

  • Grace Y.

Totes into it. Came here last night with some friends and loved the well crafted cocktails that this place had to offer. Everyone loved the drinks that they ordered and they were reasonably priced. The scene is a bit hipsterish, but it's Seattle, so it comes with the territory. Highlight * they had Uno! I also loved the lounge seating area upstairs which made a very comfy place to kick back.

  • Elizabeth L.

A nice place to stop in for a good cocktail. I ordered the Margeurite's Punch, which was very refreshing, and only $5! (happy hour price). The bartender wasn't very chatty, and the place was a little disheveled behind the bar, which took away from the fancy allure the place was trying to achieve. Overall, it's a good place to stop by if you're in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

Extremely friendly bartenders and a different flavor of bar for Ballard, but I just wasn't impressed. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Limited seating downstairs, and I didn't make it upstairs. There is a patio outside for summer. Others enjoy it, so check it out and judge for yourself.

After my first visit to Hazlewood, I now know what it'd feel like to have a house party inside of my closet. The night was a test to my flexibility. You have to step over people's feet, dodge elbows, bend over backwards to make a path and step to the side, over and around to shimmy up to the bar to order a drink. That takes skill, people. And you just may break a sweat. However, I can get down with claustrophobia if the environment is cool enough. Thankfully, what Hazlewood lacks in space it makes up for in atmosphere. Dim lighting, tucked away seating and funky art, extensive drink options, laid back patrons and hip, kind staff will draw me back though preferably on a weeknight.

As far as a small space bar goes, Hazlewood is really great. I had my birthday in the upstairs area a few years back -- granted it was a weekday night, but it fit around 10 of my friends, and the bartenders were really great. It's also just an awesome place to grab an interesting cocktail with a friend or two.

The bff and I were out late wandering around Ballard when we found Hazlewood...It looked really cool in kinda a spy way so I had to pop in. Inside it's dark, small and cozy with touches and hints of light from the chandalier and lit candles. There were a few people there, chatting it up, I could hear the bartender talking it up with a few patrons-but not in a "i'm just talking to you cause your my buds and i really don't want to work but just talk to you" deal but a sincere "i'm your bartender, i want to make sure your experieince is awesome" sort of way. I was pretty much sold right then-the BFFer and I mosyed up to the bar to grab a drink. Their drink menu is inventive and I wantetd to try to it all but settled on a beer that i never had. i can't remember the name. There is also a loft which allows for more people. If you have a chance check the peephole upstairs by the booths-it's cute and worth it. What I really enjoyed about Hazlewood is the overall feeling I had there. I was chill, having a cold beverage and able to hold a conversation with the BFF without having to shout. Great night, I'll be back!

This tiny, dark speakeasy, sandwiched between a nail salon and tattoo parlor, is filled with Ballard hipsters! The bartenders are as sophisticated as their handcrafted libations! This is the kind of place that serves stiff, one-of-a-kind drinks! Order the Hazlewood and you'll get a cigarette and chocolate truffle on the side! I read about the Hazlewood cocktail in last month's issue of the Seattle Met, and when I mentioned this to my friend, he decided to order it. How often does a cocktail come with sides? We thought it was pretty cool! While I find a good speakeasy like Hazlewood a lot of fun, I'm more of a dark, dive bar-kinda lady! But the next time I need a cute, intimate place to sip on cocktails while I catch up with a friend, Hazlewood will be the go-to spot!

Went to Hazlewood for HH with my boyfriend yesterday. I loved the ambiance of this cozy bar, really cool vibe. My boyfriend even said he wished he lived on the 2nd floor. The service was great and the drinks were amazing. We had to rush out cause of our dinner but we liked the place so much that we came back for seconds after.

This might be my new favorite bar. The drinks are well made and not for wimps. It's not small inside, its intimate. ;) Cozy up to your pals in the booths upstairs. They have table service which makes it easy to find a spot and stick to it all night. I loved my Manhattan(s). The peep hole upstairs is worth a look.

Ah I dream of sunny days on the patio at Hazlewood with a Lubo in hand. If you absolutely hate tequila you still must give this tasty drink a whirl. It takes your tongue to places it's never been. Not to sweet, not too tangy and served in a robust looking glass so that you won't look like such a wuss with a pinkish drink. On the rainy days I sit inside. It is cozy and there is room upstairs to hang. However, I enjoy listening or joining in on the conversations of the bartenders and patrons at the bar. Long live hazlewood!

Great place. Awesome selection of liquors, and super awesome ambiance inside. The I'm-too-cool-for-you hipster-trash clientele (and that one shitty, perpetually cold, rude bartender girl) can take a friggin' hike, but other than that this is definitely an A+ spot. Best during the day or early evening. It's small, and gets packed easily. Go.

Deliciously unique cocktails at very reasonable prices! A DJ with a sense of humor (he played Nelly Gettin' Hot in Here while we tried to get the upstairs Air Conditioner to work better). Comfortable sofas and tables upstairs, a tiny quaint bar downstairs. The bartenders are talented and often make their own concoctions not on the menu that they'll recommend. This time it was the "Dress Shirt, No Pants", which had muddled cucumber, Creme de Cassis, and Gin (which I am not a fan of but this cocktail was fabulous!). Talk about refreshing! Happy Hour all day Sunday! Woo Hoo!

Excellent drinks and a creative, authentic space. At almost 10p on a Saturday, it wasn't too crowded or loud, either. Very nice, non-uppity bartending talent. Is it just me, or do they allow dogs? In short, Hazlewood is quite perf!

Now THIS is a cocktail bar. Hazelwood is an intimate, classy, yet unpretentious Ballard establishment that had me at hello. This lovely hole-in-the wall has dim, sexy, mysterious lighting, it is small and cosy, and trends towards mellow patrons seeking a good drink and nice atmosphere. I drank but two of their cocktails, but I've decided that this is my new neighborhood bar, and I'm sure to try them all out. I had the prohibition cocktail and the sazerac, as well as a sip of my friend's manhattan. All three were delightful. I would take a date here, I would take my ladies here, I would go here by myself... In essence, it is everything I need in a bar.

  • Diana L.

First, I would like to say for the record that I feel like the name of this place is misspelled. It will never be ok to me. Additionally, there is no fake beer here. However, they do have all kinds of flavored bitters for which to make me some sort of fake cocktail - which is lovely and usually free. Having said all that, I do like the place; it's dark, it's sexy, it wants to be a very good time - it's just sad it fills so rapidly with the young, the White, the straight, the boring. Fuckin' Ballard.

  • Erik M.

How can you not like Hazlewood? On any given afternoon or evening, you'll find regulars and scenesters sipping cheap beer or inventive and expertly crafted cocktails - it's the prototypical Ballard hipster swanky cocktail lounge. If you can't score a seat at the bar, along the wall, on the sidewalk, or in the window downstairs, you may be able to find some couch space in the loft area. Otherwise you can mill about with your drink and make small talk with your compatriots, then sidle up the bar when you're ready for another round. The only real downside to Hazlewood is that when there's a full house making your way to the bar, or past the bar to the restroom, requires some fancy footwork. It's worth the effort, but it does introduce a bit of anxiety to an otherwise relaxing round of drinks or five. Apart from that, Drew and his crew have created a great little lounge where you can start or end a night out in Ballard, or you can very easily make an entire night out of it right there.

  • Torie M.

I love the vibe at Hazlewood. It's a fun change of pace to see the pre-prohibition menu, and though I was timid in shelling out the cash for something I didn't know I'd like, the bartender eased my fears and created a muddled-ginger vodka bev for me based on what I said I liked. I've come back for that drink four times now! It's mildly stressful when it's crowded, but if you can get a seat upstairs, it's cozy and you never have to move again.

  • Mary F.

My husband and I came for happy hour tonight. It was great, but also easy to see the place would be a royal pain when crowded. There aren't many seats in the place and the bar is in the back, one sided. Meaning access would be really constricted when busy. We tried four different drinks and were all good. Their dark and stormy was executed great. We'll come again, just not during peak times.

what's with all these bars in ballard that would double as a great place to live in? i'd love to live in the top floor of hazlewood. it's so cool up there. the cocktails are awesome & the wine is good too! it's a great bar to hang out in. love love love it here. i feel like if willy wonka or edward scissors hands hung out at a bar -it would be hazlewood...& those are two chaps I would love to bump into- any old night.

It was a Sunday night and I was meeting a friend in Ballard and was looking for bar that had all day happy hour and Yelp led me to Hazlewood. This is a cute very small two level bar which makes it intimate and a go to place for a date. Saying that, if you have a large group you may want to get their early to snag the upstairs area, which has two plush blue couches and seats, or find somewhere else to go. Hazlewood is better for two or three people groups. I must say the ambiance, the decorations: interesting art and chandeliers makes me feel as if I could be in some small out of the way bar in France. Upstairs there is a little peephole which gives you an eyeful of a naughty picture. When I looked in I saw a man surrounded by a bevy of topless ladies. Nice. Hazlewood has a menu of specialty cocktails. While I am a beer girl I decided to try one since it was at a happy hour price and I found one called the Harvey Dent. What the ingredients were I couldn't tell you, but it was smooth and nutty with a hint of orange. Hazlewood is a great little spot for a deep conversation with a friend or two while drinking a unique cocktail concoction.

Hazlewood was totally not what I expected. At all. I was thinking pretentious, tiny, out-of-my-element but it wasn't really that way at all. My friend and I started to go upstairs but it was empty except for only one couple and, well, I didn't want to harsh their alone time. So, we hopped downstairs and did my favorite thing which was to sit at the bar. I had a Manhattan and my friend had a Rob Roy. Ok - not exactly adventurous but they were oh-so-good. I noticed a menu item that consisted of a shot, a cigarette and a homemade truffle. The first two didn't interest me (right then) but the chocolate sounded excellent. The bartender, a very cool, friendly chick, heard me lamenting and she offered us a truffle, on the house, because she made them. Score! That is the kind of thing that happens a) when you sit at the bar and b) when you come to such a cool place as Hazlewood. The other patrons totally chatted with us and I got the new liquor initiative explained to me by one of the guys working there. This I like. I will be back, next time for longer and a second cocktail. And a truffle. And a shot...My arm is twisted.

Digging Hazlewood. Was out on a rainy, cold Friday night and wanted to spend some quality time catching up with on old special friend, and Hazlewood fit the bill perfect. As everyone says, the upstairs is where you hang if you are looking to chill. Downstairs can get pretty noisy and the ambience is night and day from the upstairs. The drink selections here definitely add character. I felt like I was back in Europe looking at all those beer names I couldn't pronounce that you just have to try. I got here just before the crowds hit, like around 8:30. Started off with a helping of some Aberlour scotch then switched off to the Czech beer they were serving. Service isn't fast here. You can go downstairs to get served faster or wait for the gal to come upstairs, but found that my drink would be long gone before she made her way back to us. Not sure what the bartender gal's name was - the dark haired gal with the ink on her arms, but she was great. She let me do some scotch and wine tastings before I ended up deciding on what to order. Would buy again.

Drinking here feels like drinking in your buddy's loft. You know the one that's so cool that all the women like him, all the guys like him, and he seems to know a bit about everything? And despite how much you want to dislike him you can't? Yeah that's Hazlewood. And to make it even worse they have a nice staff, a DJ that plays old school quality vinyls upstairs (scratchy sound included), and a little peephole to get a view of whatever it is they have in their at the moment. Add some cool cocktails including some that have squid ink in them and you have a damn good place to hang out and drink at in Ballard.

Love sitting at the bar and watching the bartenders make drinks, they really go the extra mile and make sure that everything is perfect. Their dirty martinis are great. Because this place is so small there is always a line of people waiting to get a drink.

When I heard that there was a craft cocktail bar in Ballard, I had to try it out, after all, Ballard is more noted for beer and darts than mixed drinks. Located on the main drag of Market, there is a small patio of outdoor standing room, and once busy, the bar needs it because Hazlewood is a very small storefront, with only four stools at the bar. Very cozy. Okay, so I was very early for any crowd and got a stool. There is a printed menu with old and revived classics on one side and newer concoctions on the other. I ultimately had three, and they all were great. The last one was unplanned, but hey, the guy next to me bought me one. That doesn't happen to me often! Did I mention that Ballard is friendly? And so is Hazlewood! When the bar was hopping I noticed that there were as many patrons with beers as with cocktails, and the casual Friday dress code was enforced. (Yeah, dress code... jeans and a top for Ballard) Very comfortable, very friendly place. And there is a cave of sorts upstairs. Actually, a loft lined with seating or standing. Kinda cool in a dark and mysterious way. I'm sticking with 5 stars, because I like small bars.

We've been wanting to try this place for awhile (as I've heard good things), but every time we've passed, it's either been closed or crowded. Except for that one Saturday. You know, the one...the one, midday, where we passed and it was both open and not packed. The one where we went and tried Hazlewood. And it was epic. The downstairs was full (as in "all of the stools are taken") but the bartender greeted us with a smile and a menu. We ordered two drinks (mine was a champagne cocktail that involved a brandied cherry - I'm easily won over by brandied cherries - and his was something that involved gin, as per the norm) and tucked ourselves onto a couch upstairs in the loft. Music was pretty awesome (Damien Rice plus Johnny Cash equals bits of both of our music playlists) and the drinks were EXCELLENT. They reached the point of amazing when we discovered, upon closing out our tab, that our total of four drinks (I mean, look at the menu - ordering just one isn't going to work!) came out to $21. Oh, hey there, happy hour...didn't see you coming. I'd dock them a star or a half star for lack of food and possibly a half star for a lackluster bellini (I'm apparently a snob about bellinis) but the price on HH made up for it in a flash. Next time, I'll nix the bellini and just order everything listed with brandied cherries.

I have a strange love for Ballard, which is based on the whole two or three times I've been there. Hazelwood only added to that love. It kind of reminded me of something you might find tucked back into a corner somewhere in a city in Europe. It's a tiny little space with a small bar, filled with interesting people (of all sorts!). The drinks seemed moderately priced enough, and their orange juice seemed to be fresh-squeezed, which is awesome for the screwdriver-lovers out there. I only drank a beer, but it was a bit of an ordeal because not being the most well-educated beer drinker, I had no idea what ANY of their beers were. Luckily, the bartender was very helpful and directed me to a beer I enjoyed. The only real problem (and the reason it only gets 4 stars) I had is that there is really not much seating to speak of. We were lucky and stole the bench, but beyond that there wasn't a whole lot of seating room - I didn't go upstairs but I could tell most people were standing there, too. When we FIRST walked by, the place was packed, people spilling out into the patio and beyond. We passed it up for awhile, but ended up going back, and it seemed like most people had cleared out and it wasn't too crowded. I wasn't there on a night with live music, but there was decent music playing and no annoying TVs or games or pool tables. Nice and laid-back. I'll definitely go back next time I make it out to Ballard.

Any bar that offers a chocolate truffle and a cigarette with their staple mixed beverage, The Hazlewood, is tits in my book. This place may be small and intimate, and not ideal for large groups, but it makes up for all of that with it's amazing atmosphere and decor. Oh yeah, and look in the peep hole. You won't regret it.

Cocktails take a while and the line can reach the door (it's a small bar, though, so this isn't that far) but its worth the wait. A wonderful drink menu and each bartender usually has personal specialties if you ask for one. I really liked the Alice when I was there and I am sad that they no longer do the Dress Shirt - No Pants, but I'll forgive them for the other 8 million creative solutions they would probably recommend in it's place.

This craft bar lifts the cocktail to artisan status. The bartenders are skillful, creative and helpful. The decor is French-quarter meets northwest quirkiness and the menu is a list of unique but delicious mixes of gin, lillet-blanc, prosecco and the full rainbow of fruity accents. In grand hipster fashion, the house drink comes with a chocolate truffle and a cigarette. Fun place to wind down after a night of antics or great place to start off a classy ladies night. It is tiny, but there is a small patio and a loft upstairs.

A wonderful experience every single time! The owner is a true gentleman and top-notch barman. His bar staff also receive A+ reports. I've been many, many times with friends and never been disappointed. You can't go wrong with this place. Everyone loves its friendly ambiance, clean and stylish interiors, stiff drinks, and great prices. Perfectly handcrafted cocktails made with attentive care are always worth the wait...I just can't wait to return to Hazlewood. I've even heard people speaking French there at the Paris of Ballard.

This is a TINY jewelbox of a bar. Once you're in the door, that's it -- there's no further to go, unless you go upstairs, which is just as tiny. I love this place - it is beautiful and has a warm, welcoming vibe. The bartenders and waitstaff are service oriented, and consistently really friendly. The drinks are perfect every single time and made with care and often with hard to source, excellent liquors. On a cold day, the hot toddy is an amazing thing. And I love that they have an Edith Macefield tribute drink. The only thing that is kind of a bummer is that I've been here several times when people came in with two huge Great Dane dogs, who took up pretty much the entire downtstairs floor. As if it wasn't tiny and crowded enough already, there are neighborhood regulars who think it's appropriate to bring giant dogs (wet from the rain) in with them. It's not the bar's fault, but even as a big fan of dogs, I was irritated by the dog owners' obliviousness, and it was clear that other patrons were annoyed, too.

After having a crowded experience here on st. patty's day, my roomie and I after being ditched by a friend, we decided to just say screw it... LETS DRINK. First off, Happy Hour prices... awesome. Hazelwood is one of those places with a lot of speciality cocktails that I have not seen at other places, so taking advantage of happy hour is a must. It was a sunny Friday afternoon so there were plenty of people there, but not overwhelming. The bartender there as well was very chill, and she gave some awesome recommendations. The blackbird, still remains my favourite cocktail there (I mean seriously, squid ink, how can you resist?) But I tried out many other cocktails that were equally just as good. And my tab at the end of my time there? A lot less than I thought it would be. Awesome.

This has to be Seattle's prettiest bar closet. Other than that. I'd rather drink at home where there's places to sit and I don't have to stand in a long ass line bigger then the establishment to get an overpriced drink. Upside was the classic alternative 80s being spun on the dj turntables, and the bartendresses were ... well nevermind about them. The music was good.

Hazlewood! Thank you for the adventure last night! And the special awesome Keith drink with real muddled ginger root and Makers! Yummy, too bad it was late but I would have stayed for more of this guy's concoctions for sure. And I do love the exclusive VIP upstairs. Haha. Super cool but all the footstools can be turned into tables! Okay maybe I'm just a dork but I thought that was swell. The DJ's there even boogied with me. Sadly I had to meet for an adventure elsewhere before staying too long. But this is a prime place to start off in Ballard. Everyone knew each other- it felt like Cheers.

Good mixed drinks in a friendly environment. The happy hour deals are fantastic. At $3 I highly recommend the pacifico with shot of pepper tequila (?something mustache?). I could see how this place could be a nightmare if busy though as its tiny. The Dark and Stormy I had was very good but it wasn't the best I've had.

"The Blackbird: Pomegranete liqueur, Creme de Cassis, and Squid Ink Tincture." "The Hazlewood: Irish whiskey, honeyed peppermint tea, and Amaretto. Served with a Nat Sherman and a truffle." These drinks were excellent. They had precisely the right blend of ingredients - ratio, temperature, shake-shake. Everything we ordered was well-balanced and a pleasure to drink, but I was particularly taken with these two. There were some classics on the menu, some new inventions, and the two above - just the perfect amount of surprise and "whaaaaat, really?" to pique our interest. And they were executed well enough to make the leap from novelties to innovations. They were produced forthrightly, no showy hype, set on the bar, took the card, thanks. Truly pro, economy of means. I liked the space, too. It's tucked between a few other bars - hardly hidden, but it doesn't look like much walking by. The interior isn't much. It's small, it's got a balcony seating. As with other cocktail bars of late, of course they're dealing in the Prohibition and Post-Prohibition paradigm. But they've taken it, twisted it, declassified the information, stripped away the pomp and circumstance, and produced a serious gem. I cannot wait to come back.

I have been here multiple times and always have walked away disappointed. While the staff is friendly, they are always overwhelmed due to the size of the bar. I don't think their selection is all that impressive - especially given the nearby competition. I understand they are limited on space but I think they could fill their shelves with better quality bottles (not necessarily more expensive). The drinks I have ordered were never that impressive - I never bother to stay for more than one. I think this place has a lot of potential - perhaps with more skilled bartenders I would frequent this spot more.

I did not go for happy hour (so I gasped at the drink prices) nor did I feel appropriately dressed when I walked in the door (I was wearing jeans, a "cute" top and high-heeled boots - the other patrons were wearing hoodies and crocheted hats likely purchased from etsy). However, my friend really wanted to take me here because she knew I'd love their drinks. She was correct and that is why my rating is so high. I felt the drinks were expertly made and original in taste. The atmosphere wasn't *my* favorite, but I will definitely go back the next time we hit up Ballard.

I've been back to Hazelwood a few times since my last review and their cocktails continue to be amazing! They are now my new favorite place to order a Gibson martini. Mmmmm with 206 Vodka? To die for and very dangerous... I mentioned being displeased with their bathrooms in my first review and as promised by management, they have been cleaned up and no longer smell icky! Yay! Thanks Hazelwood, for being you ;)

Small but solid bar that would be a great spot for a date or to chill with a few friends especially on a nice day on the patio or maybe to grab one of the couches in the small loft upstairs. Went on a Sunday afternoon and it was pretty chill but it was nice to be able to see the bar and take time to ask the bartender questions. The drink menu is actually really creative using ginger beer and several other interesting ingredients but my friends and I all really liked our drinks. Strong, great flavor, and definitely different than what you order at most bars. I will definitely be coming back to check out Hazlewood on a Friday or Saturday night and will definitely be trying out some different drinks.

This is a great little bar to come, sit, and unwind on a Friday night, and that's exactly what we did. Dimmed chandelier lights + candles, we sat upstairs overseeing the balcony, and it was a great corner seat for close conversations and attentive service. Recommend to come here with a small group of friends (4 max), and have an open mind to try the unique drinks they have on the menu. I asked the waitress for a recommendation, something not too sweet as I don't much like sugar in drinks, and what I got was perfect to sip on for a good conversation. While walking down to their super clean restroom, I noticed several people know the bartender and waitress rather well, and it's always nice to see returning customers making small chats by the bar and enjoying the atmosphere. Have to say parking nearby is a bit difficult, at least for me on Friday around 10:30pm. Though I discovered going on to the 22nd near the apartment condos usually have pretty big open spots.

My new watering hole! Ever go to a bar where every single person hangin' out/ workin'/ whatnot is now your new best friend? This is Hazelwood.. it really is just like Cheers! Upon entry, we immediately befriended several folk, including an newly engaged couple, a bartendress and her sweet bf, an east coast bartender who was no nonsense in a Dr. Zeaus T shirt, and our new best bud, Tom 'the flavor tip' last name I forget. I gave him that nickname, btw.. It's a long story. It has to do with Bacon Salt, fyi. Anyway- the drinks were good and on par with any other bar.. but seriously, I don't know of any other place in this city where someone you met 10 minutes prior is trying on your tight women's jacket and droppin' trou in the middle of the bar, just to show you 'Chauncey', a 12" tattoo on his thigh of a cartoon penis. I love their clientele, their awesome staff, and their drinks. It's cute and quaint and they've got a great patio. It was a good way to prefunk the 'Trashy Trash' thingamajig we hit up later that night @ the Sunset. ps- it was super trashy and trash. It was a great night and I owe it all to you, Hazelwood. Thank you!

The previous reviews describe hazlewood well - speakeasy ambiance + great staff. They have an amazing cocktail list - I tried something new and went back for seconds on the Oliver Twist. They do not serve my taste in beers, but, I can't have everything. Unique, ecclectic interior. Hard-working, smiling staff; but not too smiley. Even the bouncer took a break from the outdoors to come in a bus unused glasses. Now, that just doesn't happen. The clientele was an interesting mix of 45+ year old couples (until midnight) and local 30 somethings with the facial hair and flannel. Great people-watching and a welcoming place.

When ever we go out to Ballard my friend heads straight for this bar. We lucked out on a Friday night when my group of 7 found seating upstairs ...SCORE. The place is really small and about 20-25 people can fit in here. The drinks here are also great. We all ordered either the Whiskey Sour or a Dark and Stormy last night. My friend also ordered a Rum and Coke w/ Orange Bitters. I have no idea with this Orange bitters is, but I like it. Normally I'm not a Rum and Coke girl, but I could have had one of these...or three. The Whiskey Sour was good and I like that it wasn't overly sour. It was a sneak up. It didn't taste very strong until I tried to walk down the stairs and grab the railing to help me along. The Dark and Stormy tasted strong in my opinion. It was the first time that I had this ever, and it was pretty good. Overall this is a nice bar. Hopefully you will be lucky enough to find seating here. I chuckled when reading people's reviews on how the people here are really friendly and it's like Cheers.

The first thing you'll notice is that, yes, Hazlewood is quite small. And if you can't get past that, or the fact that seating is sparse (almost nonexistent downstairs), I wouldn't blame you. However, there is a lot of good to be found here. Prohibition-era cocktails are a great way to expand your booze vocab, since there's usually at least one ingredient you haven't tried or heard of. Plus, they're usually strong and delicious. One of them is served with a sweet little cigarette on the side. I recommend the Horse's Neck, which is only $6 during happy hour. Check out the loft upstairs -- if it's not too crowded, it's very cool and feels very exclusive. Smokers will enjoy being able to bring their drink with them out onto the little smoking patio out front. It's like drinking right out on the sidewalk! The decor at Hazlewood is dark and old and weird and vaguely spooky and yet modern and artful. It's good, in other words. The bartenders have always been cool to me, despite other reviews I've read. And you know, even when it's busy, I've found the people mingling downstairs to be surprisingly friendly, so don't be afraid to jump in and say hello. I must remember to try the Blackbird, with squid ink!

How on earth have I never been here before last night? WTF is wrong with me? Those are just a few questions I was asking myself when my darling friend and I happened upon Hazlewood last night. Talk about entering a whole new (or old) world. This place instantly put me in Paris, circa 1922. From the lighting to the music and the bartender with the ever-so adorable smile, I was in the place that I only see in my sleep. Unfortunately, I could only stay long enough to enjoy a delicious imported French beer, but I assure you, I will return. This is the bar that the regulars don't want people to know about; it's theirs and they probably don't want to share. I don't blame them.

We came here for a quick drink and ended up staying for a bit. I ordered the Marguerite Punch and boy was it delicious! Yummy! I cam here with the boyfriend and a girlfriend and we all very much enjoyed ourselves. I appreciate that it's pretty chill bar...I feel like a lot of Ballard bars are just a bit intense for me, but this place doesn't feel like a meat market and actually is enjoyable to be hanging out with friends. The bartenders were nice and the drinks were great...can't ask for more than that.

Smaller than I imagined, but then again there isn't really a screamingly large venue with well-made drinks in Ballard (that I've discovered any way). Thuogh what Hazlewood does with the space it has is pretty neat. The ambiance was cozy and the vibe was pretty trendy. It's what you would expect for any hipster filled scene. I went on a Sunday and got happy hour drinks, which were well worth it. The hot toddy was done in a pretty ritualistic manner (impressive!) and came with a cinnamon stick to stir. The bartender was nice and showed a good amount of patience especially for a big group who didn't know what they wanted to drink. Overall, don't come here if you're expecting a drunk, debaucherous time in your hoodies and sweatpants. Rather, Hazlewood is a 'chillin chillin' venue where you would casual sip on your drink and bask in a cool vibe and environment.

Okay, so its slightly hipstery but not bad hipstery... Meaning the hipsters that go there are nice, not rude... The drink selection is amazing and they make a mean dark and stormy... I haven't tried any of their fancier drinks but the combos seemed like they could be delightful.... The bartender was nice and friendly... It has almost a family environment with their usual guests, not that I was poorly treated.. The artwork is a tad creepy but nothing to get nightmares over, just in the sense that you feel you are always being watched whilst drinking.. I will pop in for a drink here and there...

Definitely one of my top favorite bars in Seattle now. Since my last review, I've come back 20+ times, estimated. And it's won my heart a little by little by each visit. + Nice bartender that recommend me some good drinks and then made me some of the best drinks I've tasted. + Another nice bartender that custom-made my drinks to my specification. This is ALWAYS good. I like making my own drinks and trying new things. She was down to try anything. - Minus points for me for not remembering their names. + The upstairs loft area with a big couch. Perfect for a big group party. + The little peephole with a little secret in the upstairs area. + Walked in one night to old-school country music and people dancing. Good vibe.

I have to admit that I am not exactly a bar aficionado, but I just wanted to say this about Hazlewood: If you are interested in impressing a date with your exquisite but far from mainstream taste, unique prohibition-era cocktails they've probably never seen before (unless they, also have exquisite taste of the same vein), and just about the cutest darn atmosphere I've ever seen in a bar...Take them to Hazlewood and watch the magic happen.

Great little bar in Ballard with fabulous decor! It might be small inside but the drinks are great and the patio comes in real handy for smokers. We came here Friday night for a friend's birthday and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Didn't take long to get a drink because the workers were so attentive and friendly. This is a great bar for people watching especially if you can snag a seat in the bad ass upstairs area. There were candles everywhere which I love because they give the place such a romantic feel. I'm glad we stopped by here!

Too bad we weren't thirsty! This review is for the experience of walking in, checking out the menu, chatting with the bartender briefly and then leaving. But still it was an experience, thus, I'm yelping about it. Super cute! Totally dug the ashtetic- an industrial, steam punkesque vibe. It smelled amazing, strongly of citrusy goodness and there was a solid indie-rock soundtrack being filtered in not too loudly. The crowd appeared to be a group of locals, of the just got off work variety, everyone was friendly and quick to try to move down to make room for my husband and I. We would've hung out if there was anything to nibble on, but nope, just drinks. But the very friendly gal tending bar did make several nearby recommendations of where to grab some cheap eats which we were grateful for and immediately took advantage of. Wish we lived in Seattle since I really want to return. Sadly, we only spent two nights on this particular visit and what's more, only a couple of hours in Ballard. I'm confident we'll be back though. And I intend to return to Hazlewood for a hand mulled fruity cocktail!

I concur with other folks that this is the place in Ballard to get your cocktail on! A telltale sign of a good cocktail bar is that they pour the likes of Frenet and Chartreuse. Seattle has a lacking of good cocktail lounges in the city. Everyone once in a while you can find a good pour of herbal liqueur, but very few who are as thoughtful as the bartenders at Hazlewood. While dark and fancy schmancy looking from the outside, the folks inside are pretty laid back and have a "come as you are attitude"

The only problem with the Hazlewood is that it is NOT closer to my house! Still, it's only a short bus ride away, so I should be going there more often. So what's keeping me from becoming a regular? The crowds, of course. As everyone else has mentioned, this place is teeny-tiny - so there's not much room to relax and sip unless you get in the door before the rush. I discovered this past weekend that "the rush" happens around 6:30-7 - so if you get there around 6, you should be able to grab a comfy seat upstairs and soak in the atmosphere. I love it. I walk through that door and immediately feel at home there, which is the most important thing about a bar to me: comfort. Not to mention their impressive drink list. If I could marry their Dark and Stormys, I totally would. Plus, Champagne Cocktails ("I thought only hookers drank those" - if you can tell me what movie that quote is from, I'll be impressed!)...the Lola is SO GOOD!!! So what I am trying to say here? I feel like I'm all over the place. Oh, yeah: The Hazlewood might strike you as elite and too-cool if you're walking by, but it's really an awesome tiny bar with good booze, good tunes, and friendly peeps. Stop in and try it!

Excellent cocktails. But someone needs to tell the patrons that it is the year of 2012 and not 1992. The 90's were cool, but I think it is time to move on.

rad!---a lee hazelwood themed bar. i love that guy. it's cute in there. small, but cute. reminded me and my bf of a place called valentine's in portland. my giant hot toddy was too sugary...would have preferred a smaller one with a more boozy flavor.

Where else can a yuppy, a non- apologetic Dungeon Master (pimping on three ladies), and an actively imbibing Cokehead all congregate to sip booze and enjoy casual conversation? Why Hazlewood of course.

Hazlewood was the first bar I walked into when I first arrived in Seattle. We got there way before the crowd. In fact, we went back twice more without even knowing that there would be a crowd. We actually thought we'd found this brilliant cocktail utopia and after having just relocated from SF where the neo-speakeasy trend is strong and Brooklyn where it rules, we were blissful here. Until the crowd. Then it was terrible. Drinks were undrinkable, the B-team were behind the bar and the vibe became the kind that drives out diversity (meaning that all the different cocktail loving types felt suddenly pushed out by I guess what passes for "hipster" in a decidedly unhip place like Seattle). But when its not crowded, and the A-team are behind the bar, its golden (though Bastille down the block actually makes a better Blood and Sand). But I'll be back...after all, its named after the great...well, if I tell you you'd call me a hipster and I'm too old and smoove for that. Update--Almost Two Years Later: More attitude and fewer people willing to relax and enjoy shared space; bartenders hit and miss, some pretty decent but a lot of them lazy (due perhaps to the presence of customers who aren't as focused on the cocktails or not as knowledgeable). Definitely a drop in quality but still a decent space to hang out if you are lucky enough to catch the right bartender at the right time.

Dear Hazlewood, I love you. Te amo. Ti amo. Je t'aime. Yes, I find myself thinking about you often. I love you because you are: Sexy: your dim lights create a very cozy and mysterious ambiance. The lushness of your wooden bar is a wonderful host for drinking palates. Quirky: your furniture might not be the most unique, but it's antique. Who doesn't like vintage nowadays? It contributes to the mood so well...we enjoyed it very much. Kind: you bartenders and servers know what they do and they like to treat your customers nicely. I will never forget the nice bartender who, on my request for a Ron Aniversario on the rocks, opened the bottle and breathed in the goodness that lives inside that marvelous glass container. To make things better, she said "it's been some time since I last enjoyed this amazing aroma." Oh, man. I knew what it was to love a girl that night... Attract the nicest crowd: we loved your other customers. They were minding their own business but were also very dandy. The BF and I won't forget how we relinquished our seats to a couple that needed to seat close to their group. Why not? We got another comfy couch and a pleasant surprise of a free round from these nice people. What a thoughtful gesture. Great places like you, Hazlewood, are those where people collect fond memories. You gave us a lot to remember. We'll be back. We'll enjoy you again and again and again. Warm regards, Ron Aniversario Loving Chick.

LOVE this spot! Their Greyhounds are amazing, they have uber-fresh grapefruits they squeeze in front of you while making the drink. Prices are good, vibe is chill...Upstairs is a great little spot, in fact, perfect for a book club cocktail hour! (C'mon ladies, we know we do more drinking at book club than talking about books!) Go there. You won't be disappointed.

This place was incredible - cocktails were fantastic, innovative and very reasonably priced..the bartender was super fun, nice and was great at making artisan drinks. The environment was equally great, it felt like a little speakeasy/hole in the wall that was both unpretentious and classy. Loved it!

Perfection... Really... I like a great dive bar and I love a good high class joint. This place satisfies my thirst for both. Hazelwood is small... Hazelwood is in Ballard... Hazelwood can easily be missed The bar downstairs serves drinks and drinks only... there is no food... nor should there be at a place like this. I imagine people standing and talking on a crowded night in the downstairs- but on the off night I went there was a couple groups seated on the wall seats chatting and catching up. There was a collection of smokers and those that wanted to be in the summer night air out front in the sectioned off part of the sidewalk. We choose to venture up the narrow stairs to the intimate upstairs that has a couple seating options of ottomans as chairs, couches, and nooks and crannies. The drinks were strong and creative. The menu featured many drinks with fresh ingredients- like my fav GINGER! The prices seemed normal. The bartender babe seemed kind and perfect for the space. I would come to Hazelwood on a Monday or a Friday night- or any other time I want a good stiff drink and a chill zone to habituate.

I wandered into Hazlewood on a Sunday night. It was about 1230. There weren't too many people there, but the waitress/bartender was awesome! We struck up a conversation, and we were joined by a super cool chic and a pretty nice looking bloke. We were talking about bars/nightclubs...and how awkward it is to be somewhere...in the zone and someone comes up and interupts your flow. We all agreed that we hated this. This place is really classy without coming off as snooty. The music was hip, jazzy and soulful. It was loud enough where you could hear it, but you could still have a decent conversation. The waitress was totally down to earth...the place is dark, eclectic and has a nice upstairs sitting/chatting area. Another really ridiculously cool factor from this place was mentioned in another yelper's review, but it is the business card from this place has places for you to put your number/place of work etc. on the back. LOVE IT! Total originality! This place fills my heart with a continuing love for Ballard.

Fresh Ginger-Bourbon. Or, Fresh-Ginger Bourbon. Or, the Fresh-Ginger Bourbon for a fresh ginger? However one wants to dice that drink, it was tasty. The ambiance is fine. Think: cozy loft living room for the upstairs and social gathering with SRO for the main level. Jite is an awesome bartender.

I think the booze at this place gave me Alzheimer's because I don't remember much. Everyone says it is small but I swear the dance floor was HUGE on Tuesday night! If Alice in Wonderland wanted to get a drink she would go here. I'm big... I'm small... I'm invisible... Cool staff!! Awesome music!!

Had gone with friends last nite to Hazlewood.. didnt realize that this place doesnt have any food.. though they are open to you getting some pizza etc from outside.. well if i am going drinking my preference would be that the place need to serve some finger food too... But nevertheless we had the drinks at the place & would definately give a thumbs up for the drinks.. loved the Bloody Maria (Bloody Mary)... If you are looking for a good drink & move to another place.. would say definately try the drinks.. they are good... Not a place for chilling & relaxing...

So I no longer work so close to the hazelwood, (not their fault), making it less easy for me to pop in for a drink. I have decided they aren't worth the effort it would now take for me to pop in. The last few times there was just too much attitude. Look I get it. I work in customer service, always have. Put myself through 8 years of college serving and bartending. It can be annoying, and there are plenty of schmucks to put up with. But I am always nice and tip well. I may not be a nightly or even weekly regular, but I am not asking for hugs and kisses. I may not be as cool as you think I need to be, but I am a paying and tipping customer none the less. Hazelwood, good luck in the future, I must bid you farewell.

Hazlewood is like a prohibition-era speakeasy in the wild west that's owned by Parisians. That explains the wood-carved longhorn skulls and chandeliers. Friendly bartenders and awesome drinks. I usually don't like tequila but the lubo is delicious and I can probably down three birds feet and rain cocktails easy. Some seats along the walls and standing room and a small upstairs area. The space is tiny which makes for a good mingling atmosphere. So glad Ocho was packed to the gills so that we ended up coming here.

I had a difficult time deciding between 4 stars and 5 stars for Hazlewood, mainly because I paid nearly a week's worth of grocery money for my two drinks there. (OK, not quite, but I live on the basics!) I took my friend, who was visiting from the Midwest along with me, and his first comment was - "looks like we could get it on up here." OK, that's if we were 'getting it on' - but the upper floor of the Hazlewood does have a lounge-y, let's-get-naked-in-front-of-others-feel. Large, plush sofas line the wall, there are cushions for your feet, the lighting is low, and oh! Did I mention that we and several strangers sitting in close proximity decided the picture in the box on the wall is Sonny Bono? I don't know who the naked ladies surrounding him are, and why are they surrounding HIM? - but the atmosphere is nice enough and the drinks strong enough that you don't mind contemplating that particular oddity, or any of life's other conundrums, for that matter. If you get to this TINY Ballard lounge early enough, you might actually find a seat, and feel like one of the most important people in the neighborhood. Otherwise, be prepared to pay a lot and stand around wondering how comfy other people's seats might be. Afoot or abed, however, the drinks are some of the most delicious I've had. (Thanks for the recommendation, Perry!)

I like this place. It's very small and kind of hard to find. Came here with my sisters for a few drinks before happy hour elsewhere. I like the drink selections and the interior. There isn't much room inside, but enough to where you can hang out comfortably with a smaller party. I had the Sazerac which was pretty tasty. I will definately come back.

If I was going to open my own bar it would look a lot like Hazlewood. It's an adorable tea cup sized bar that is perfect for a date drink or if your just in the mood for something a bit more upscale but don't feel like the crowd at BalMar or your budget is a bit too lean this week for cocktails at Bastille.

Now, with this one, I am biased. I will say it up front. These folks are as much family as friends. Drew, Keith, Miss Jessica, Sarah & Jite (Geetay) are some of the best people we have ever met. We call this bar our "living room" and we are not alone. Our connection, as it happens, goes through another "silent" owner. (if you can call him that!) that my fiance has known for years. That "connection" has budded into some great friendships. That said, I would not be attached to a bar stool here many evenings if it was not for the skill and talents of the staff. From small talk to fabulous drinks - this place is just right. Small, you feel like you are in on a secret. You want to tell everyone, but you don't want to spoil what you got. You know? Fri & Sat have a totally different feel than the rest of the week. You can reserve the upstairs for small events. There is a crazy secret in the corner that you have to see to enjoy! Each keep has a distinct and different personality. I find all of them exceptional, but you may need to spend some time to find out your favorites. The bar selection makes this a more enjoyable task. Coming in a few times means that you get to try even more of the top end and hard to find liquor that really is what makes this place stand out. No absolut or other such labels here. The well is more like the shelf at most bars. Just listen to how the bar handles the requests they can not fill - true professionals. They always have something up their sleeve to suggest when those cardboard requests come in. Drew & Keith - Thank you for doing a service to the world. Making drink lovers out of drinkers everywhere! If I wasn't so homophobic - I'd kiss yah both!

Nice place to chill. Seems like a place I'd avoid during the prime hours since it looks like it could be packed in a heartbeat. Other reviews mention snaking your way to the bar with skill and precision. The night I was there was a rainy Sunday evening. There were a few people at the bar but the upstairs was empty. A very nice place to warm up and relax. I'll definitely be back.

Firstly, let me just say that the space is great. The loft is comfortable and inviting. A really fun place to get together with a few friends. I would give it 5 stars but..... THE RUDEST, MOST HORRIBLE BARTENDER EVER! I do not know her name, but she's short and Black. She must be the owner's daughter or something, because I do not understand how any rational owner could keep this person hired. She is rude and makes you feel as if you've offended her just by walking in the door. Does not make me want to spend money here. OWNER: Do yourself a favor and FIRE that woman, she is bad for business

This is a great bar. Seating is tough because it is small but its a very friendly atmosphere. Great place for a night cap after getting dinner on Ballard Ave. Go....Now!

I recently decided that I've had enough drinking myself stupid. I should append that, as all who know me know I'm already stupid. So maybe I drink myself smart? You be the judge: when I drink, my mind goes completely blank and I have nothing to say. Hmm. Yeah, maybe I do drink myself smart. To reinforce my lowered alcohol consumption, I am now driving out everywhere rather than cabbing/busing it from the south side. This makes me a designated driver, which is fine. I can sing TV themes to my captive drunken passengers and there isn't a fucking thing they can do about it. I've started noticing what bars are DD friendly and which aren't; the DD friendly bars will gladly hand out a free coke to someone who tells them they are driving. The DD unfriendly will continue to charge an outrageous $1 or $2 for a fricken coke (according to my new bar-owning expert, Stu, the cost per soda for a bar is somewhere less than a penny). We walked into Hazlewood and immediately noticed that the entire crowd of people that we had walked in behind were heading up some stairs. I assumed there was a birthday party up there, and that means it's time for me to crash it and see if I can get some cake out of it. We head up there and that entire crowd of people has dissipated like steam off a pot of boiling water. Where they all went, I have no idea. The upstairs has this really nice, dark, candle-lit, wood finish to it. Lots of little areas to sit around and yack, plus a billiards table or two. We made the rounds and talked to everyone we saw, mostly by walking up to tables, picking up the candles and telling ghost stories with the candle under my face. That was all fine and dandy until my goatee went up in flame. I ordered a coke from the bartender and made the universal "I'm driving" sign: I mimed like I was talking on a cell phone, looking in the mirror brushing my teeth, and eating drive-thru food all at the same time. The bartender nodded knowingly, passed me a coke, and accepted my $1 as a tip. Every time I walked up to the bar, he offered to refill for free. So... end of the night? I drive safely, and I'm awake for about 20 hours from all the caffeine.

great place to spend on a wet and dreary evening. met up w/a dear friend and chilled upstairs on the couch w/a white wine in my hand a scotch in his. i don't usually go out as much but any opportunity to meet w/old school buddies is always a treat for me (i'm loyal like that). And this place is a perfect place to do that. the spot upstairs is pretty chill and pretty small but it didn't matter...as long as there are comfy couches, alcohol, and good peeps then it's all good.

I love this place. It's so unassuming and cool. Stopped in during a walk with a girlfriend (yes, our aerobic endeavors sometimes end in booze) and was really pleased. I ordered a house special that involved fernet and limoncello (wow). she had some sort of tequila concoction. Both were wonderfully prepared and tasty. I also loved the fact that everyone in the bar seemed to know each other. it was almost as if we had wandered in on a house party and were immediately welcomed. oh, and there was a super cute dog in the bar AND we got to sit outside in the sun. will be back fo'sho.

This was a bar I walked past for a year before finally going in. The first time in I was all "whoa, that place is cool." It took me about six months after that to discover the peep hole. In the two years that have followed since my first visit, Hazlewood has taken on an increasingly central part of my life. I've had relationships start to unravel there, others begin to form and cement. I've stood outside and smoked in the cold and rain and wind. I've sat at the bar and (tried) to read. I've had more interesting and random conversations here than anywhere else. The bartenders are scrumptious and stupendous, usually both. You can walk in when the place is empty on a Monday night, start a conversation with the bartender, and many drinks and many conversations with many people later, it's way past bedtime. I recommend weeknights. I recommend their martinis and Manhattans (good with the house and the rye whiskey, get one of each). I recommend standing outside with the smokers. Saturday and Friday nights are fun too. Their specialty drinks are all damn tasty, I just like my drinks to kick me in the teeth more than most of those.

My purse was stolen from Hazlewood this past Saturday. It was taken from beside me when I was sitting in the upstairs loft. Already, some one's purchased $400 worth of stuff on my credit card. Please watch out!! The staff was as helpful as they could be, bringing a flashlight upstairs in case I had 'lost' the purse. I loved coming here, like a lot of places in Ballard, but its disheartening to know I can be made a victim so easily. Be careful and don't get robbed!

I've been to Hazlewood lots. Since I'm in the neighborhood, probably 20 times in the past 2 years. I love the loft, love the drink list and even kind of love the quirky art. Their signature drink, the Hazlewood comes with a chocolate truffle and a cigarette (the only time I will smoke)!!! I'm giving 3 stars because I used to like this place. My beef is: Their service has always been touch and go. Sometimes they help you, sometimes they even seem like they want to help you out, but more often than not the staff are disgruntled and grumpy. Time for a new gig maybe? I'd rather be drinking at the Viking.

Week nights, perfection. Weekends, wear your comfy heels 'cause it's standing room only. Prefer the upstairs with its cozier seating, wall-extending sofas, chill patrons who are happy to share a table should you ask for a place to sit for a few. Superb specialty drinks... names I couldn't recall if I tried, but I DO know that I'm slowly working my way down their list. Have yet to be disappointed by a single one-- strong but balanced and all under $10. In summary, fantastic small establishment that blows the pretentious Matador out of the water. Tall, dark, sexy, intimate, can hold its own and make a gal actually feel like a lady... just like a good man. Well done.

I personally believe there should be a punch card for their drinks.... or at least a card that would tally which ones I've tried, and which ones I have yet to enjoy. Hazelwood is like a candy store for cocktails. I'm not talking silly, frou frou drinks... but real, honest and well thought out drinks that marry flavors like you've always wanted to do at home, but don't have the ingredients, time and desire to do on your own. But actually, I should be frank here... I would never come up with these concoctions and neither would my friends, god bless them all. The atmosphere is gem like with a narrow space filled with lacy ambiance and music that doesn't make you feel like your out of touch or too old. Squeeze into a ledge or cozy up to the bar and you'll find yourself exclaiming with delight about your drink with your Hazelwood comrades. This is not the place to be morose.. and if you are when you arrive, you won't be for long. My last bit of love goes out to the bartenders who treat you like humans. Thank you! Thank you for at least pretending like you give a hoot when I ask about the ingredients of a drink. Thank you for being interested in telling a good story and most of all, thank you for being polite. Your mother raised you right! Cheers to Hazelwood

If you are in the mood for a interesting and well-made cocktail, this is your place. When I have been here, the main floor is either at standing room only capacity, or completely empty. Empty would seem like a good thing, especially if you are in the mood to chat with your sweetie over a cocktail, but other than the bar stools, there isn't really a good place to sit. There are wonderfully comfortable and cozy seats upstairs, but this area is usually full (even when the downstairs is a ghost-town) Still, they make a mighty fine cocktail, and if you are lucky enough to snag a seat upstairs, you're in for a wonderful evening.

When I first walked in I really didn't want to like this place. It seemed so trendy and goth. But I could not help myself. Its very small but has a nice feel. The wait staff was hit and miss but the drinks where very strong, so it evened out. I got the Hazelwood, which is a drink, a truffle and a cigarette. The drink was fair, but it was very cool getting a cigarette and a truffle on a little place with my drink. Also included was a book of matches that had a poem inside about tipping or going to hell. I quote: "If you don't tip well, you're going to hell... Well, probably not, but tip anyway... please..."

Did I miss something? This place is tiny! Not White Horse tiny, but it seemed pretty damn small compared to Smith. I think I missed something. The drinks were good, the crowd was friendly, Keith from Boston was a cutie - Hazlewood gets a thumbs up from me. My friend did run into a chick that currently works at the school her son attends and said chick was getting pretty blitzed on a school night, but it was entertaining nonetheless.

Tiny and hard to find (in spite being on Market St), the Hazlewood feels like a secret I should be keeping. However, that would be a great disservice to this wonderful bar and to anyone looking for a well-prepared cocktail. Though the main floor (good for meeting people) was rather cramped, a waitress came up to take our order within a minute of walking into the place, saving us an attempt to squeeze up to the bar. Stone-sober, the small stairway to the even-cozier second floor seating area (good for dates) might have been harrowing; fortunately, we'd had a drink or two elsewhere, so they were more of an adventure. Despite being around midnight on a Friday, we immediately happened upon a single empty table. My date ordered The Hazlewood, a light, delicious cocktail served with a truffle and a fancy cigarette, and absolutely loved it. Always the masochist, I ordered the Habanero Bloody Mary, which was super spicy, very tasty, and nicely garnished. I don't know if repeated visits could be as perfect, but if you're as lucky as we were, the Hazlewood is fantastic place to take a date or a few close friends.

I was actually torn between 2 and 3 stars on this place. Its not a bad place per se. The bartenders are nice. They have some interesting mixed drinks, if you're into that sort of thing. I am more of a beer drinker, and I don't think they have beers on tap, so they lose points for that. The main reason I wouldn't give this place 4 stars is that it seems to reek Seattle hipster in terms of people who hang out there. I stuck out like a sore thumb when I went there, and did not feel at home. If you wear a fedora and/or skinny jeans (male), you'll probably fit right in.

I have wanted to go to Hazelwood for ages and last night I got my chance. I sat upstairs and scored an awesome comfy couch seat and waited for my drinking partner to show up. I decided to forego the wait and went down to the bar to order. First up was the Prohibition Cocktail....Damn it was strong! Once my friend showed up we had a big party of six sit right next to us all cozy style. I loved it because I usually find Seattle folks to be standoffish but these guys were all rad. I know some people found service to be slow or crappy, but there was always someone coming around upstairs asking for our orders. My second drink was the Lubo with Tequila. I liked this one even more. I have found another favorite bar and I'm not surprised at all that it happens to be in Ballard....my new favorite Seattle 'hood.

Your matchboxes are pretty hot. Yep, I'm basing the review off of flammables. They're in a thin rectangular box and I snuck a few even tho I don't smoke - closet klepto...anyhow, good design eye! Thanks for letting my hook up my bicycle around your fence! I finally went in yesterday and had a pretty good time. The bellinis are yummy. The stairs are steep. And your sofas are well positioned. My head still hurts today from the drinks.. Minus one though, for refusing service to my friend. I know I know, you were being responsible but he wasn't drunk. I promise!

Hazlewood made me think of Disney's Haunted Mansion, the Industrial Revolution, and the bar in the basement of my parents' house. That probably makes no sense. Anyway, this bar is pretty rad. While I don't see myself consuming any alcoholic beverage made with squid ink, the list of specialty drinks is impressive. From all of the 4 star+ reviews, I thought there would be more of a Friday night crowd. But I definitely got the neighborhood-bar vibe from the...interesting people that approached us. I don't know if this Boston Keith was there, but I must meet him.

From looking at my reviews, I realize that I just don't go to places that are not great. Lucky me! :) ohhh...wait this is about the Hazelwood....haha.... The Hazelwood is AMAZING! The drinks are so unique and special, almost on the brink of novelty. My favorite is the Harvey Dent - it has artichoke liquor! Such a neat flavor for a drink. Love the atmosphere, love the cute little peep show on the upstairs lounge, and of course I am in LOVE with Jite, one of the bartenders there. She makes my drinks so wonderfully and it helps that she's super cool.

Hazlewood is my secret hide-out; my little home away from home where I can relax & unwind. Their drinks are consistent and good quality. I actually love the fact that it is small and cozy. Hazlewood has been a regular favorite of mine for about three years now, and I have always been pleased.

Drinks are inventive and delicious. Just watch the bartenders work on each one---they love what they do, and they craft each one with care. They have a server who walks around taking orders. It may take a bit for them to come back, but they always do. It does get crowded, but people do move on and spaces open up. It is really tiny inside though---that's why it always looks so crowded. I think their prices are great for what you get---totally worth a stop.

The first few times I went to Hazelwood, we were able to sit upstairs on the benches. Sitting up there with some drinks and a few friends is a great way to spend an evening, love the atmosphere up there and it's a prime spot. I guess you have to get there early enough to get a spot up there. I generally get the Horses Neck or just a brew when I drink there, Jessica or the guy (sorry don't know his name) who work there usually make my drinks reaaaal good. Hazelwood is generally on the agenda when I'm in Ballard for the evening, and I see no reason to take it off next time. The people are good, the drinks are great, and atmosphere is up there too. If you have to stand downstairs, might as well have a drink or 2 and head out, but upstairs is where the action is. I even got slapped in the face by a drunk from Montana up there!

Exploring Ballard and its many gems I ventured into this place for a cocktail. Tasty drinks and bartenders were nice. The space has interesting decor, a tad too dark for my taste and a bit small. There was luckily a few open seats upstairs on this particular Saturday night so we got to enjoy our drinks by candlelight. Cute space. It's like going to a house party in some ways.

Cute spot, but very small. There are only a handful of spots to sit, so get here early if you want to really relax with your drink. Not really good if you have a group larger than 3. Drinks were crafted with care and the bartender will also just take any ingredients you want and make them into something awesome. Happy hour is a good deal too. No food.

Looking to escape from the insane rioting after our big Superbowl win, I found myself at Hazlewood for the first time. Since this experience I have been coming back for more! I like it on weekdays (and the occasional Sunday) when it is less crowded. Rachel is an amazing bartender, because of her service during my initial imbibement, I have returned. Not to make the others feel left out, the times I have been here they all have lovely personalities (friendly!) and know what they are doing. Drinks choices can be really creative and this is primarily a cocktail bar, so keep that in mind. Small upon first glance, but they do have an upstairs! The upstairs is where it is at. It might be my favorite place to kick up my feet in the neighborhood. Dark and brooding after a few Manhattan's I feel like its my secret Ballard lair.

I did not love the ginger bourbon drink we ordered here. They desperately need to get rid of the cheap frames, and the "This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things" sign - it ruins the ambiance/feel/brand they're trying to create.

Nice spot! I got the Blackbird cocktail and it was very good (the champagne taste is the most powerful flavor in the drink). Drinks take a bit of time to make and I wish it had been a little less crowded, but still a nice spot with a great atmosphere that I would return to in a heartbeat.

I liked Hazlewood. It's a very small space, 2 stories, with around 4-5 small seating areas upstairs. The drinks are reasonably priced here ($8-11) for a really tasty drink. They have drinks listed, but are more than accommodating if you prefer a certain liquor over the other. I tried the bird's feet drink which I subbed w/ gin instead of vodka. They use fresh squeezed juice and my drink was very refreshing. I also tried a couple other drinks, a ginger something and a drink that tasted similar to a Manhattan. One thing that was consistent across all drinks was that they were all strong. You definitely get your money's worth here. Service wise, it was somewhat busy when we came in, but we managed to snag a couple seats upstairs on a Friday night. It's quicker to go down to the bar and order than to wait for a waitress to come up to you.

Drinks are classy and specialty and a bit expensive but it is a fun atmosphere to start a night off right. They need a fan or more ventilation upstairs though it's too stuff up top.

I know, I know. Everyone loves this place but me. I've had so many freakin' bizarre experiences here that I feel like this place hates me. Once I saw a guy puke all over the wall and it just stayed there for an hour. No one on staff felt compelled to clean it up. Another time, I waited 20 minutes for the restroom (there is only ONE) and 2 guys came out and then promptly got back in the line. They tried to open the door after I'd been in there for less than 2 minutes. When I came out I asked if they'd left something in there and they just looked at me without responding. Draw your own conclusions! I have more stories, but let me move on to the drinks. They are fine. Nothing special, but not disappointing either. Staff? Ok, I guess, aside from them not wanting to clean up puke. Music is great and the vibe on a slow night is chill.

Unlike most Seattle lounges where I would rather digest a loaf of moldy bread and subsequently wreak havoc on my toilet with a manic diarrhea episode, I can actually stomach Hazlewood 2 days out of the week. During weekends, when this place inevitably overflows with people, your group will be consumed by noise. Shrieking in close proximities and making exaggerated hand movements are your only methods of communication. Trying to get a drink will be a chore as the bartenders, underneath their calm facade, are encumbered with the neverending drink queue. One evening, I kept getting sandwiched between different men while attempting to get the bartender's attention to order my drink. It was like commemorating my awkward boarding school dances filled with freak trains and mismanaged erections. I admired those chaperones' inability to gag. The only days I'll come are weekday evenings before Thursday and after Sunday because navigating a sweaty neck beard maze when the liquor isn't pouring quickly enough isn't my ideal way to spend my nights. Other than that, I've had good times with friends and acquaintances alike here.

Fantastic! There was a big white dog and his owners downstairs who were so friendly. The bartenders were delightful and the drinks were delicious. The loft upstairs was very relaxing and so laid back. Not a place for big crowds but great for lounging and talking with friends. And bringing your dog with you to a bar Hazlewood is dfinitely a place I'd take my friends to next time I'm up in WA.

  • Carla M.

A very cute little spot for cocktails but not good for groups at all. It's a great spot for a date, the loft is comfy (and air conditioned!!) and secluded even though it's on the small side. Only downsides for me is the small space. The loft is nice depending on the occasion. The downstairs has a little seating but it's literally a bench and then a few more outside, makes you feel like you're always in the way. That and the drinks are not stiff enough for my taste.

  • Nina H.

I really have to agree with most of the reviewers' reviews because this place is a small speakeasy-type bar with two floors and one bathroom. The chandeliers are quite fancy and for some reason the bar area reminded me a little of Grim's on Capitol Hill but smaller. The cocktails are stiff so you definitely get your money's worth. The upstairs area was a bit empty when our group came in on a Saturday evening and we did a little feng shui so that we could make room for all of us. They didn't seem to mind that we moved one of the couches over to the other side with the table. That was convenient! I'd definitely come back here for drinks because it's a nice spot to catch up with an old friend or something. It's chill and not as crazy as BalMar or the other neighborhood bars in the area.

Go there when Keith is working, you won't regret it. He is a great bartender and an excellent owner. Have a dark and stormy, enjoy the atmosphere, then have another dark and stormy. Plan it out right and after a few, you can head to La Isla across the street for some food. Simply a great joint that is copied by many others.

Very cute micro-bar with hard liquor. There's a little bit of seating upstairs, but otherwise you'll stand downstairs. There's an area out front if you smoke. It's good if you want to hang out for a drink or two either before or after dinner in the area. It's way too small to be raucous (which is good) or to linger in very long. They don't have food of their own, but will let you bring some in if you want to snack while you drink. The place is named for musician Lee Hazlewood, which is why it's spelled wrong.

You know that feeling. When you walk into a small bar for the first time on a REALLY warm night and realize that most of the seating in said small bar is UPSTAIRS. I could just feel the stuffiness without walking all the way inside and wondered how 9 of us were going to fit up there...And what we would all smell like after. I ordered my drink downstairs (what an interesting set-up. A person would come out from behind the bar to get our drink orders, then walk back behind the bar and work with the other bartender to get the drinks out. Not the fastest process, but it seemed to work.) Then, I stood at the bottom of the stairs; drink in hand, woefully and repeatedly sighing, then put on my "I'll deal with it" face. I trudged up...slowly...so slowly. But vas ist das!! Is that cool air that I feel blowing throughout the cozy quarters?? I'll be darned. It totally was. I looked at the comfy leather seats and silently thanked the air conditioning gods that I wouldn't be sticking to my seat like a flystrip. And though small, we all fit on the couches, chairs and footstools arranged just-so, with a few other groups as well. Also, the music is fantastic here; it definitely added to the already existing cool factor. The drink service may be slow, but they are genuinely cool and kind. I'll take that over fast and being a pompous womp any day.

Came in for a drink last week with my sister. The bartender was surprisingly friendly (sometimes I don't expect stellar service at trendier locales). It's really neat inside. Just a big open space downstairs, with seats at the bar, and a bench along the wall, then tables and actual seating upstairs. The ambiance is great. I imagine it can get a bit noisy on the weekends. We tried a couple house cocktails instead of our usuals. I had a nice gin and bitters and something else drink that I believe was called the Prohibition? It was sweeter than my usual (gin and soda) of course, and I'm quite picky about sweetness, but it was pretty perfectly balanced in my opinion for the mood I was in. I was pleased. A really nice spot.

They have the best cocktails in Ballard, perhaps in Seattle even. Here you will find masterful mixers at work and nice folks too. I especially love this place at 5pm on a weekday in winter. The less crowed, the better as it is a small place. Though I have spent a New years Eve dancing my ass off in here. It was quite cozy:) If you are in the mood for a really delicious, carefully crafted cocktail, this is the place for you.

Every time I come here I have the wildest and best experiences. The bartenders are always interacting with their guests, making the best drinks and adding to the environment. I absolutely love this place! Definitely one of my favorite cocktail bars in Ballard (maybe even Seattle?). I am constantly trying to get people to come here even though the first time I visited a guest tried to fight me because of my views on domesticated dogs. The way the staff and also the regular guests handled it made me feel like family. I will frequent this bar over and over. The best neighborhood bar in Ballard and the drinks are delicious! Any bar that's dog friendly for my pup Samson is a seal the deal in my books. Thanks for being an awesome host for me, my friends and my dog!

It's pretty tough to find a place to hang out for a bit in Ballard. It has changed a lot even in my short Seattle tenure. This is pretty much a super hipster bar, but I find it one of the most tolerable places in Ballard. From the cute bartenders wearing 70s vintage racebunny jackets to Dapper Dan showing up straight from a 1930s british speakeasy, the regulars seem an odd and aloof bunch, but I didn't feel unwelcome even though I'm a ninjapirate. The drink, the Hazlewood (shocking I know), is a creative treat that won my adoration nearly immediately.

Packed, loud and really warm on a Friday night. But could also be cozy and fun. The hot tottie is AMAZING! Worth it!

Pros: Tiny bar, intimate, great cocktails. Adore the 'witch's tit' cocktail. Outdoor and indoor seating. Cons: Sometimes has a cliquey vibe.

I was pretty underwhelmed but maybe it was just a crazy off night. The place was packed (the bouncer said it was their 8th anniversary) and it was impossible to have a conversation. Which is sad considering there's a nice couch area upstairs. And I know the place is small, but it was like crazy humid ... now I understand why literally everyone was standing outside, stuffed to the max in the tiny patio area. I think their drinks are probably fine but I just didn't think the atmosphere was all that enjoyable. Maybe I'll stop on by again when it's not so busy but with so many bars in the area with good drinks, etc ... it definitely didn't stand out.

I have very fond memories of this wonderful and tiny little bar. It was the first bar I went to when visiting and deciding to move to Seattle. Hands down the best cocktails in Ballard and definitely in my top 5 bars in all of Seattle! The drinks are very good and the service is very friendly. The atmosphere is cool and intimate. The secret peephole upstairs is a god laugh. What else do you need in a bar?

On weeknights, this place offers some of the best cocktail service in Seattle. I've been on weekends, and its been packed, but service always rules. Hazlewood is the cocktail spot in Ballard. The atmosphere trumps all, the barstaff is always friendly, the drinks are killer -- and they have a patio outside! I have yet to be let down in this place, but it gets jammin' on weekends. Get here early, or better yet, on a weeknight.

This is one of those great vintage, old wood, dark lighting kind of bars. Makes you feel like you're back in the 1920s at a speakeasy. Even the bathroom is nice. The staff here were very friendly and they have some fantastic creative drinks to try that are plenty strong! They were pretty fairly priced too at about $8.50 - $9 each. My only complain about this place is that most of the seating is upstairs and as a person with a disability, if I came on a busy night, there would have been no place for me to sit if all the seating downstairs was taken (to be expected when you're going bar hopping on a weekend night though). Thankfully though, that wasn't the case and our group got the bench seating right next to the bar. That being said, this is still one of my favorite bars I've ever been to and I definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area.

This place is incredible. Great place to start or end your night out, with craft cocktails. Happy hours is actually affordable (our bill was $13 for 2 drinks) and they have amazing infusions. I suggest you try the Lubo, substituting the habenero tequila. We also enjoyed the Birds Feet & Rain and the Minot Lite. Yum!

One of my favorite weekday "date" type bars in Seattle. Cozy atmosphere and good drinks. Really wish there were more bars like this in Seattle. Weekends tend to be a bit busy and packed. But if you are looking for a relaxed place during the week, definitely give Hazlewood a try.

This is one of my new spots now. I really enjoyed this place. The bar was fun, the drinks were excellent, and a good crowed hangs there. Come here on a weekday night for relaxed cocktails or a weekend for a slightly busier feel.

This place was alright but nothing overly memorable. It may have been one of those rare occasions that yelpers steered me wrong. Bummer. The atmosphere was super weird but the drinks were pretty good. I'm not sure I was expecting to be saloon-like and was thinking it would be more of a speakeasy-type of bar. The bartenders were nice but not overly friendly. I will probably pick a different cocktail bar to visit next time I am in town.

After seeing the reviews and getting a friend's recommendation i had high expectations for this place... Sadly I was disappointed. I was expecting a cocktail bar on the level of a canon, tavern law or zig zag given the review, what I got was a very small bar with little to no ambience and mediocre cocktails. I would likely not come back here.

Rachel was a pleasure. I needed to find a place to hide and have actual intellectual conversation as the rest of the city was acting like fools in the wake of the Super Bowl win. She was friendly, courteous and helpful. I brought a Jesse, a girl I had just met into her bar and she welcomed us and engaged us in stimulating conversation that definitely made a day of drunken deb-ochery end with a flare of happiness. Tip her well and appreciate her efforts because these are the bartenders who make drinking an experience rather than a chore.

I read one of the tips/reviews from Yelp saying, "Hazelwood is a candy shop for cocktail." So, I decided to come here for Happy Hour. Location: In the heart of Ballard downtown on Market. It's not visible because this is a small place. I walked by a couple times and finally found it! Street parking! I normally park by the water, Back-in only parking spots. Since this is in Ballard downtown, it's very convenient to take public transportation. Decor: Small, and not very noticeable from the street. It's cozy inside. There are two floors. I didn't remember seeing tables on the 1st floor. However, there's seating by the bar where you can talk to the bartender. The 2nd floor is more like an attic. It's not very big. I'd say it might be able to fit 8-10 people. The couches upstairs were very comfortable. It was sunny day when I went there. I was glad there's AC! Drinks: (They ONLY serve DRINKS) At first, I was surprised they don't serve food because I was starving. However, after my 1st grapefruit cocktail, I fell in love with this place. The drink was so good and refreshing. I finished my 1st one and can't help to order the 2nd one. It was a custom made by the bartender from Hot Toddy (a hot drink, whiskey, lemon, and honey). She made it a iced Toddy for me. I liked it but it was too strong that I only finished 1/3. Service: I feel it's more like a self-served place. You order your drink, go to your seat, drink, talk, return your glass, pay, and leave. It's not necessary bad. Just feel no one is rushing me in any ways! I really appreciated the bartender making a hot drink cold for me. I felt bad I didn't finish. She thought it wasn't good. But, I told her it was really good ,just I was getting too tipsy to have it all. She was so nice and offered me water. This is a great place to hang out! But, make sure you come early before the crowds arrive.

In terms of crafting a beverage, this place is top of the line. I could try all of their drinks and I might. I had the Dark and Stormy. Delicious. The bartender gave herself a $3 tip from my $10. Sure, I didn't make a fuss. But I resented it. I would have given most or all the change back. I just don't like the presumption. Interior seemed dark and stuffy. There wasn't a lot of seating. This place is hard core hipster. It's a bit dark in here and crowded. There's not a lot of seating. It was also stuffy. Maybe all off this is the ambience. It didn't really win me over. (except the chandelier.) They didn't seem to have a menu people could pick up to look at. It's posted on one wall. That seemed a bit inconvenient for a place so small.

Hazlewood has been serving up craft cocktails for 8 years now, so they were at the forefront of the movement in Seattle. But they are still serving up some of the best cocktails in Ballard from a tiny space on Market Street. There are always people here, although it was nice to come here late on a weeknight when it's relatively quiet. They have a nice collection of whiskey, and prices are very reasonable. Started off with old fashioned, and then tried a lovely drink with rye whiskey, aperol and punt e mes. Service was friendly and solid as well. Definitely a nice break from some of the larger spaces and places around the area, with some very interesting and solid cocktails.

Boom. One star. Yup. I really liked you when you first opened. It's a shame you soured, the location is pretty great. It looks like Hazlewood keeps some people happy, and that's great. But unfortunately, I am not one of them. Walk in sometime after happy hour, after some fabulous eats at Ocho. Stood in the empty downstairs space for 5 minutes, noticing there are 3 couples in front of us standing awkwardly waiting for drinks too. This is not a good sign. One female bartender in the well, wearing a zip-up hoodie. Underdressed for a bartender at a cute craft cocktail joint in Ballard, no? I disgress. Server comes out and asks us what we'd like to order. I say a Last Word, and a Sazcerac for manfriend. Server scrunches her face up at not knowing what a Last Word is, but reassures me the bartender will know. I am surprised they don't know one of Murray's best drinks. Especially as I've had one here before, back when the service was faster. I change by mind, in fear of a really effed up cocktail on the way, and change it to a gin martini. Me: That's okay. Then let's do a gin martini, Sazcerac. (points to me and my friend) Server: ::Turns to him:: Okay, and what will you have? Me: He'll have the Sazerac. Server: Oh, I'm sorry, I thought that was one drink!!! At this point I'm speechless. I just want the drink and get out of there. It had been far, far too long, and we're still standing in the middle of the room. Upstairs is filled with really friendly looking hipsters cough cough. So we wait, and wait some more. The bartender puts down a Last Word, tells me it's mine. Fine. Martini shot time. Then begins to make the second drink, the Sazerac. I wonder what she's doing as she pours the booze into a tin...adds ice...I'm watching her intently, afraid to watch her next move... Yup. SHE SHOOK THE SAZERAC. Arrived bruised, ice shards and watered down to the middle of the rocks glass. Any kind of glass wash a distant memory. Manfriend takes a sip and goes..."Ohh, is this how they're supposed to taste?" I'm done with Hazlewood. Embarrassingly incompetent service, unfriendly clientele, poorly executed "cocktails." Hazlewood got too cocky in their old age.

...I'm a sucker. No, not a sucka MC. ...I'm a sucker. No, not a sucka DJ. ...I'm a sucker, a sucker for master mixers, master mixologists. Hazelwoods has all the elements/ingredients/components for a stellar sitting. Although I live nowhere near Seattle, I do frequent the streets of Ballard and like its establishments. So, it was a surprise when I was introduced to Hazelwood (lovely Katy H. was matchmaker. THANKS, Katy!). My bro and I saddled up to the bar. The cooler-than-I-can-ever-hope-to-be bartend-ita totally made my day. We were handed a wildly weathered cocktail list and had choices spanning centuries. My bro went with a pre-Prohibition concoction (with bourbon in it of course). I, the forever indecisive nincompoop, watched her make my bro's drink, while not having any drink decision in mind. "What do you like?" Millions of things raced through my mind.... Oh, for a drink.... "Ummm...I like tequila. I like citrus flavors..." I awkwardly replied. The cool-ly tattooed brunette barkeep rapped about a drink which she liked making, and I, of course, said, "let's make this happen". Yes, I'm a sucker. Some bartenders are artists. I like to watch them working their craft, and making it look easy. My drink was pretty darn dope, stiff, and funky fresh (these are all good). I go weak for craft cocktails. Oh and yeah, the place was just chill, small, and cozy. There is the area downstairs next to the bar, but there is also an area upstairs with couches that call to you. [next time!] So yes, Hazelwood is newly on my Seattle go-to list.

This is a tiny little bar so it gets packed. It's a cool spot and even better if you manage to grab a couch in the upstairs loft. Try the Tapatio mustache, which is a Pacifico beer in the bottle, but with the addition of a shot of tequila and some habanero spice added. Make sure to flip it over so the ingredients can mix, just like you would with a lime, but watch the spray. Get it in your own eye and it will feel like someone socked you. Get it in someone else's eye and they will.

Laidback, cozy 2-story lounge with a slight speak-easy feel, quite a contrast to Hazlewood's loud neighbors (Matador, King's Hardware, Balmar). Extensive craft cocktail menu including all the classics (Blood & Sand, Rob Roy, Manhattan, etc). Drinks are well-priced (~$8). Upstairs is dark, intimate (fits 15) - largely couches and settees, i.e.: date-appropriate. Downstairs features window seating, bar seating and a small standing space. Went on a weeknight and upstairs was already full - likely gets packed on weekends, would return on a weeknight only. HH 4-7PM daily + all day Sunday $2 off all specialty cocktails; $1 off all other cocktails, beer, wine

I was sort of hoping for more from this place. It's not a speakeasy if there's a sign, so I don't really understand how it's called one. In Chicago, we have speakeasy's and....there aren't signs. We came in after dining at Walrus and the Carpenter. I ordered a manhatten. It was good, but not great. I've definitely had better. We pretty much drank our drinks and left. Wouldn't be back most likely.

Hazlewood is my favorite bar to start a night out in Ballard (though I've only been twice or thrice so far). I love how cozy the upstairs is and the specialty drinks are excellent. Maybe it's because I come early, but both times I don't have a problem finding seating upstairs. I think it's because when people finish their drinks, they up and move on to other places. Not really a place you stay at all night. Can't wait to come back soon!

Hazlewood is hands down my favorite cocktail bar in Ballard. The cocktail list is super inventive and very thoughtfully put together; you won't find these creations anywhere else! Here's a teaser - one of them has squid ink in it...and it's ridiculously delicious. Of course, if you're a bit more traditional, you can get any of the standards too; all expertly crafted, I might add. Other great things about this bar include the staff - the owners regularly tend bar and are super down to earth/friendly. For you hetero men folk, one of the most adorable female bartenders I've ever laid eyes on works here too. Can't beat that! The decor is super sexy, dark, and a little bit primal. Treat your eyeballs to the secret peep-hole upstairs...you won't soon forget what you see! The music is ALWAYS fantastic. No top 40 or shitty pop music here. My only complaint is that this place is SMALL and also POPULAR, so it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends. In fact I try to avoid Hazlewood any time after 9PM on Fridays and Saturdays. However it's a perfect spot to drop in during the week and it's excellent for starting out a long night of drinking on the weekends!

Seeing the great reviews, we decided to try this place out. The bar and the drinks are very unique and interesting. Even with the place being small, the bar was packed with people. The decoration on the walls were definitely interesting and different. The bartender was generous on pouring the drinks, and as busy as the place was, he took his time to make the drink perfect. You could spend quite some cash here on a good night, and sometimes it can be hard to find a place to sit. I would probably give an rating of 4.5, but overall, this is definitely worth the visit.

Dark and small, wooden with not a lot of seating. There are gorgeous carved skulls on the walls that I would steal in a heartbeat. The drinks were well made and not terribly priced. I would get here early to get a good spot, and be ready to wait in line to order a second or third round. My martinis were good, though they didn't seem to fill the martini glass as well as the specialty cocktails. Maybe I'll learn to drink foofy drinks. I will come back!

In the week I spent in Seattle, I spent three of my nights in Hazelwood. Fantastic original drinks, cool bartenders, and a fun crowd willing to shoot the shit on whatever. The owner's drinks are far and away some of the best I've ever had, while his employee was a competent mixer. I'll be coming back on my next trip to Ballard.

This is a small bar in Ballard that you just might miss if you aren't careful. And you don't want to miss this place. They have a great drink menu with attentive service and if you can score a seat upstairs, you'll never want to leave your people-watching perch. Word of caution though, you'll have to climb the stairs to reach the second floor, no lifts here. The patio might be twice the size as the interior, I wouldn't know. I've only stepped outside there a couple of times. My experience has been limited here but enjoyable. If you're out and about in the area, stop in and have a drink here.

Hazlewood! Another place I've been meaning to try for the last two years, but is so small and usually so crowded that I never find myself dropping in, despite living only a few blocks away. But Andrew D and I decided to followup our Fu Kun Wu drinking with one last stop here, and got lucky as most folks don't start drinking as early as Tuesday night, leaving the bar pretty open. They have a fairly extensive list of specialty cocktails (my guess is around 20), most priced around $10. On Andrew's recommendation, I went for the Blood and Sand, which was an awesomely strong and tasty drink, served in a topped-off extra large martini glass. In fact, I don't really remember much of my night after this point. I'm still a bit bummed about how small the space is, and that the top floor isn't accessible (there's supposedly a secret peephole up there with a surprise behind it). But hey, if you ever needed an excuse to start drinking earlier in the week, here you go.

great bartenders and great drinks. We brought a large party in (a strech for a place of this size, I know... at least we called ahead) and were really taken care of. Everyone kept talking about how great their drinks were and my old fashioneds were no exception. Just about as perfectly balanced and delicious as they get.

Hands down, bar none, the rudest service I have EVER had. The space is fantastic and I really want to love it. I went here once, the bartender took our empties and never asked if we wanted anything else and glared at us when we asked how her day was going. Needless to say, we left shortly thereafter. I decided to try again, but it was the same bartender and I got the same service. She seems to be nice to some and not to others, who knows what she bases that decision on.

nat sherman: a name synonymous with luxury cigarettes dating back to the days of 1920s speakeasys and a more simple time. hazlewood pays homage to the good ol' days with their namesake drink, a concoction of whiskey, peppermint tea, and amaretto that's sure to put hair on your chest. but the buck doesn't stop there; they're gracious enough to serve it juxtaposed with a porcelain side dish containing a truffle and a nat sherman cigarette. but enough about what everyone else was drinking; i asked for "something with fernet". what resulted was something like a sidecar, with cognac, fernet, and a mysterious orange-based italian liqueur called s', which i have never seen before nor since. also on the menu was the falcon crest cocktail, heralding the first of many crème de violette-based drinks i'd see on libation lists in the upcoming weeks. after boozin' it up at the bar, our group decided to take a field trip upstairs to the infamous hazlewood peephole. i won't give its' secret away, but i will tell you that after trying to capture a photo of what was contained within, my cell phone immediately shut down and would not wake up for a day. perhaps some things are better left unspoken.

Oh Hazelwood, ye of plush comfy sofas upstairs and delicious, over-priced-yet-totally-worth-it-fancy-cocktails. The freshly-shaved ginger and whiskeys are decadent as can be. Make sure you look in the peephole in the upstairs to see Lee Hazelwood himself, surrounded by a bevvy of topless beautes. And make sure you wear a skirt, ladies. This place is fancy-pants!

Really like this cute little gem! It is quite small, but I've always found a place to sit (the best is near the peep show upstairs!). the bartenders are always very personable and make delicious concoctions. they have this muddled ginger and whiskey drink that makes me very happy. it's perfect! the ambiance is nice, minimalist but cozy.

one girl on this page said that it reminds her of a hollywood set. and being that i live in hollywood i don't know if i would use that terminology to describe this bar but nevertheless i quite liked it. it's very cute and small. i was a bit shocked to enter the bar and be like right at the bar. the upstairs feels like a little loft with some couches and tables. and there's some peephole thing that you look into and press a light and see something. i wish i could remember what that something was but i can't because i was wasted out of my mind. i'm sure it was funny. i swear i laughed about it. or maybe i was laughing at my own incoherence. anyway, i think if i lived in ballard this would be a regular watering hole for me. it's totally got that neighborhood vibe going on. at least on a weeknight. i dig it.

It took a few times for me to settle in here, why? Because I'm a snob. They had some fox paws, or what americans call faux pas, but these problems have been solved. But before I give you the review, I'll choose this as a moment to share my most embarrassing bar moment. I was chatting up the barman and asked to sample his habanero tequila as I had made a seranno pepper one for myself and loved it so. As drink cask whiskey and overproof rum I took a hearty swing of my sip that found its way straight to my epiglottis what ensued was me laughing at myself whilst turning the color of a cherry and coughing to the point of choking. After I exclaimed tastefully, "no, I just have sand in my vagina." They called off the ambulance. But I digress. This bar is what small cocktail bars should be, half the people entering are greeted by name, the good stuff is off menu, the booze selection deep, some characters, flanked by a kick ass pizza place and a tattoo parlor, and I've frequently seen a dog there deservedly named "Odin." So this bar is cool and the criticisms are such, don't go here on the weekend unless its just for a single drink, there is only seating for about 12 people upstairs and 5 downstairs. But do go here on a Monday. There other is a criticsm of gender, there is only one bathroom, albeit nice, no bathroom on a busy night should be for ladies make up nor should anyone be subject to the drunk mans urine. But I can't end with urine, the Harvey Dent, is a truly beautiful cocktail, a paring of nerdy homage and gentle flavor.

If you're into Bloody Mary experimentation, you cannot miss the Bloody Maria at Hazlewood. It's made with habanero-infused tequila and is the perfect balance between serious heat and serious flavor. My only complaint is that it's served with two olives instead of three. Always three olives, people. Always.

I was there on a Wednesday night and it was pretty empty, but it was a great place to grab a drink. The bartender was really friendly, not the overly sweet fake friendly, but the genuinely nice friendly. She helped me pick a drink from their interesting menu. I had the Lubo, which was good, but I want to try one of the champagne cocktails next time. We sat upstairs, which was cozy and intimate. I'll definitely be back.

what a groovy little place! great cocktails and an interesting beer selection. we started with some really good dirty martinis (they have Cerac!) then switched to beer. fridays must be 'funky hat' night because it seemed everyone was wearing one (except the guy who we thought was wearing a funky hat but it turned out to be his hair), except us. we stood out in the crowd due to our lack of funky hats but luckily drank enough that it really didn't matter.

I love Hazlewood. The drinks are consistently good, and since it is within walking distance to my apartment I have been there way too many times to count now. My favorites are the super-spicy Bloody Mary (made with habenero infused vodka), the Lola (a girlie champagne cocktail), and the Marguerite's punch (rum, pineapple juice, good stuff). Oh, and the Darnk and Stormy is tasty too. The bartenders certainly know what they're doing. It is a really tiny space, so try to get there early. It's a bit awkward to stand around near the bar, shuffling to accommodate people. Sometimes you'll be surprised by a great three-piece band or a DJ playing up in the balcony space.

as a general rule - seattlites don't like to talk to each other. i mean..they're more than willing to hold the door open for each other - but then...that's about it. so anytime you find a place that forces you to interact - it's sort of intriguing. the hazelwood is that kind of place. it's so damn small, you're gonna have a hard time escaping without at least a little bit of small talk with a stranger. you may or may not get a seat depending upon when you show up - that's just part of the deal. the drinks are decent, the staff is great, and the overall atmosphere is kind of refreshing. while it looks a little upscale - it really isn't. it's not all that easy to find (next door to the neon 'tattoo' sign on market)- and that might be part of the reason this place hasn't been totally overrun. ah...and everyone, and this is obligatory - everyone has to check out the peephole upstairs. lee hazelwood demands it.

Yes, it's small, but I like small. If you disagree, then you do. But small is just better. Microscopic is sexy, and subatomic makes me hysterically and joyfully spastic until I'm blinded by my own tears. (I have acidic tears like the Aliens from the talkies). Yes, this pad is small... but comfortable and friendly too. Most of all though, Frat boys don't like the look of it and that makes it perfect in my book. The Hazlewood is just a nice, friendly, place, and the live music has really proven to be a surprise on more then one occasion. You should go there more. Just suck it up, sit it down, and thank God that you're not in a Frat.

I think they're known for some good cocktails, but I'm more of a vaginatails guy... or straight whiskey, or beer or whatever. Even so, I like it. It's a really low-key, cute looking bar; I like being in it. It's also in a really sweet spot in the heart of ballard.

This place is a dream. I want to live in it. It's a miniature box of charm and uncalculated quirk. The liquor concoctions are glamorous without being pretentious, and will get you rippingly drunk. It is also reponsible for me learning about the real Lee Hazlewood, for which I am very thankful. As many people have mentioned, Hazlewood is minuscule and has few places to sit, so you generally end up socializing with people you do not know. This doesn't happen with much frequency or success in Seattle. We are strange beasts who stay focused on our inner circles. However, in a departure from most Seattle bars, you will find most strangers to be charming and hilarious here. Stand and wisecrack under the collection of butt rock album covers and you'll have new pals in no time. Last time I was here, I drank a Fresh Ginger Bourbon. The place was packed to the gills and I stood under the butt rock album covers and surveyed the busy stairs, transcendentally drunk. My eyes landed on some artwork at the top of the stairs; in three separate frames, the words "Fresh" "Ginger" "Bourbon." Perfect.

This is a very cool, if somewhat cramped, bar. Not ideal for large groups, but if you're not rolling deep, it's a great destination. Bartenders clearly knew what they were doing, and the people were generally friendly. Definitely heading back here if we ever make it out to Seattle again.

I realized I had a huge bias of awful places in my yelp 'portfolio'. Such is the nature of things. But it was making me look and feel like a troll. So I thought, what places do I love? This is probably number 1 on my list. Drinks are amazing, other patrons are sociable and people I enjoy meeting, the patio is lovely, AND such sweet bartenders. Seriousssssly. When was the last time a bartender took a buck off your tab because they forgot you had asked for your Manhattan down? Big ball of love, this place.

This is one of those rare cases of size not mattering. Yes, it's small. But it's not about that, it's about what they have done with it. Last time I was there on a Saturday evening, they had a 3 piece french-gypsy band playing upstairs. I listened to they're music while sipping a perfectly made Dark and Stormy, which matched the weather outside. It was a good evening.

Oh Ghetto Blasters.... John and I went to Hazlewood one sunny after noon and sat in Hazlewood's outside seating area. The staff - awesome Inside - tiny and dark The outside seating area - smoky We loved the Ghetto Blasters and sitting in the sunlight, but didn't appreciate the smokers that casually take over the outside seating. We will be back Hazlewood but will probably sit inside to stay out of the hip cloud.

Hazlewood - the ol' secret den, the ol' clandestine watering hole, the ol' hugger-mugger bar, the ol'...well you get it. Here's why: 1) The entire place is roughly the size of a Cheesecake Factory menu. Literally, just the menu itself. 2) It's very easy to miss, even on foot. 3) The alternative spelling of its name will make Googling real fun. 4) Head up the stairs, look in the peephole and push the red button.

Perfect neighborhood watering hole. Everybody is really nice. Service is good and happy. The upstairs is really cool and has a great vibe. One downside is the front door is generally open which means all the smoke from the outside smoking porch floats in. Great place to show off Ballard neighborhood to your visiting guests.

Say what you will about the size of this place, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in character and unique drinks. I've been here a few times and each time there's a different vibe and crowd which I enjoy. And if you really want to treat yourself try The Hazlewood - it comes with a chocoalte truffle and a cigarette..what more could you possibly ask for!

So the specialty cocktails here are less imaginative and perhaps lacking something compared to those at other high end cocktail bars popping up all over the city. But the bartenders are super cool (ballard types) who will make you want to stay and keep drinking in spite of this. Maybe steer toward their short but interesting list of bottled beers and wines, or go for something simple.

I was always frightened by the austere front and hipsters blocking the doorway, but I've found that hipsters can be nice and this bar is cozy! This is one of my favorite places to go in Ballard and you'll find me here at least once a week. It may be pricey, but the cocktails are worth it and just make sure you go to happy hour once--then you'll be hooked. Drink as much as you can from 4-6 and go home toasty! The weekend is a bit too crowded, so I'm usually there for Thursday happy hour, but its a nice stop for a pre-funk on a Saturday night too. Plus, the bartenders are awesome! I love Drew, Jessica and Keith!!

Super chill place to get a drink. I love places where you can start up a conversation with anyone. If you like that too check it out. I also like that the music is at a level where you can have a conversation. And just like Lauren D. I love that they have Lillet.

I was a bit skeptical of the place simply for the fact that they don't serve food, but I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I tried the prohibition and it ended up being the drink of the night for me. If u want some high quality drinks this place is for you.

If this bar was re-named Keith's it would warrant a 6th star. As it goes, he is the reason this place blew my mind when visiting the Seattle bar scene and the reason I will take home a great memory of drinking at Hazlewood. This ambiance in this place is spot-on. I would come here with a small group to get a little bent upstairs or all alone to snug up to that 4-manner bar and chat with Keith and the other soloists that evening. The lighting in here makes you feel like your back drinking in your momma's cozy, pregnant womb. And then those drinks! Holy smokes, strong and worthy. Keith's got his form down, that's for sure. He don't be tickling or nothin. The squid ink is a really cool touch. Everyone in our group was impressed. Being a visitor, I'm not to familiar with (but aware of) Ballard's upstart trendiness, but this was the most impressive bar in that district in my discriminatory mind. This place feels like a nice "breather" in that area of town.

This is the place to go if you like liquor. They have beer, yes, but the liquor is the key to total appreciation. They have the biggest selection of bitters I've seen this side of Europe, even one made from artichokes! Order a Horse's Neck and look in the peep-hole! (when will I ever have a chance to write that again?) It's a cool, small and comfy atmosphere that has a big personality. You will probably see me there.

Yummm, they make a good Aviation (gin, maraschino, creme de violette). I love coming here for a good cocktail, and they make great throwback cocktails. The bartenders here are into their craft, and it shows. The vibe here is really mellow, but elegant. It's a sweet little bar that is fortunately in my neighborhood!

I was here last Tuesday and had an awesome time. The atmosphere was fun and the beer was cold. It also had great lighting. I met some really nice people who were there for a birthday party. Lots of great bars in Ballard and this is one of them.

They give you a Nat Sherman cig and a truffle with your whisky/tea martini?! I can hardly contain my excitement. Check this place out next time you're waltzing down Market Street. You'll be glad you did.

It's almost like stepping into a classy little time warp, and being whisked away to a more elegant age. Or it would be if it weren't for the very contemporary art, funk and hip hop records adorning the walls, and turntables on the mezzanine. There's something slightly schizophrenic about coupling the above elements with classy velvet seats, an ornate crystal chandelier, and a menu of classic cocktails. Somehow it works though, so I'm not going to complain about the anachronisms. It gives the tiny little split level bar a unique charm, upscale but not snooty. The drink menu is excellent, starting with the classic Sazerac and including a variety of unusual signature drinks. The clear winner at our table was the Blackbird, a champagne cocktail with pomegranate liqueur, Creme de Cassis, and squid ink tincture (dropped into the drink via eyedropper, at your table). It's slightly on the pricey side here, but it definitely makes you feel like it's worth it. Make sure you check out the peephole on the top floor while you're here.

Great Cocktails. Great Service. Cool cowheads with intricate scrimshaw-esque? design. Nice escape from yuppy bars close by. Don't miss the peephole, some sexy moustaches await.

I love this little place. It is tee tiny but feels very adequate, especially when you venture upstairs. It always feels interesting, and while I (at first) felt it was a bit gothy (maybe the fake raven above the door contributed?) I realized there is a lot more to the Hazelwood than that. Tough to describe the vibe. Interesting is just going to have to suffice until you go see for yourself. There was a guy sitting at the bar drawing a cool perspective of a house in his sketchbook, and his chosen media was ultra fine Sharpie. There was also a lady with a yellow lab. After all the same old same old, Appletini and mojito drink menus I have seen, the Hazelwood's is a delight, with drinks that make use of more obscure, though once very en vogue, spirits and ingredients like campari and grappa. I'd been wanting to try campari, and the waitress said she'd bring me a taster if I wanted. So sweet! I opted for the full serving though, and felt happy that I was trying something new. Sort of like finally reading a classic I know I should already have under my belt, except in liquid form. I love that the Hazelwood's manhattan is made with bourbon as a rule, making it a little sweeter, surprisingly lighter, and more unique than your average manhattan. Which might also be a satisfactory way to sum up the Hazelwood in general.

I love little pocket bars, and this one is up at the top of the pile. It's a great place to meet interesting people, take a look through the peep-hole, and partake of a lovely cocktail. The Horse's Neck is my personal fav. and the namesake Hazelwood is delightful too. This place can get a little crowded and it's the most fun when you can find a spot to sit upstairs on a comfy couch so if there's a line out the door, I would come back another night.

  • Adam S.

great tiny little place. Has all the cocktails you need to stay out of the main stream bullshi**. Really tiny, which can be a problem for you if you are in the mood for a more romantic less crowded place where people are not standing on top of you. The cocktails though are tastey. Staff is hit or miss. The male bartender is funny and attentive. The main female bartender can be very rude and disinterested.

Hazlewood is a real good staple bar for ballard. Their cocktails are delish and the cozy atmosphere is always inviting. I was here recently and was starved so I picked up a burger and fries and they were totally cool with me bringing in some food to munch on while there. That's pretty cool. I'm usually down to have a cocktail at this joint, but they actually have some pretty yummy beers so you should check those out too.

  • Anna M.

I've only been to Hazlewood once, but I'm sure I'll be back there again soon. I went during the week and it happen to be happy hour which was awesome. This is a very cute bar and the women working there was super nice. I wish I had caught her name so I could let everyone else know who to go to. At first my sister and I were a little bummed to hear that they had ran out of some of the alcohol that was called for in our drinks, but the girl working there kinda made up her own drinks for us and they were awesome. I can't wait to go back again.

Walked in here by my lonesome one night after a long day...the bartendress treated me as though she was too kool for schooool, didn't care for that....Excellent ambiance though, I'll give it a second chance. Can't be the same bartender every night right??

Remember when you were a kid and you'd visit a friend's house for the first time? Remember that one friend of yours that had the weird house? The initial reaction to the Hazelwood is very much the same. It was dated and dark, yet oddly comforting. It almost feels like it was decorated by your grandmother. I wouldn't call it a dive. I couldn't call it upscale. I would call it mysterious. The patronage is young and trendy, how that scene wound up in Ballard is beyond me, but I'm okay with it. The music was a nice mix of the new and the familiar, and the champagne cocktail I downed was excellent. And considering that my last visit was on a Wednesday, the place was surprisingly packed. Not too shabby Ballard.

With 65 reviews, obviously this place is well liked...this doesn't mean that I still don't feel the need to give MY opinion. Hazelwood is my new favorite place in Ballard as long as I can find a seat upstairs. I would call it more of a loft than an actual second floor because with couches around the edge and a few coffee tables, nothing else will fit! Still, if you can get a spot then the dimly lit, lounge atmosphere is perfect for a romantic night out. Major bonus points for the jazz trio up there as well. The cocktails are sophisticated and obviously created by someone who knows what they are doing. None of those faux-fancy cocktails with blueberry Stoli or some variation of the mojito. I am killing myself that I can't remember the name of my drink because it was the best I've had in awhile. A twist on the traditional Vesper martini only this time with some sort of peach liquor in it. I could not stop drinking them...which is mostly likely why I don't remember the name! So why the four stars? I don't understand the idea behind having no stools, tables, or chairs on the main floor. Obviously there is not room for much but it looked awkward to have groups of people just standing around. A party of more than two will likely end up walking down the street to somewhere else. Did I mention it is really small?

The place is really nice place for a solitary drink. Can't see myself paying so much for each drink. If you want to have multiple drinks and meet lots of people Hazlewood probably isn't for you, just like it wasn't for me. However, I can see Hazlewood being a very good place for taking one person and getting to her/him a lot better. The bartender seemed very knowledgable about his drinks, and prepared the expensive dirty martini I ordered very well. It was dirty and it was martinied. I guess I just wasn't in the mood to be chit chatting over one drink. I can see a person's tab spiralling out of control while trying to get a decent buzz going.

while the first floor is tight the upstairs allows you to spread out and mingle. Yummy cocktails the Lola, Singapore Slings and the Dark and Stormy are great, as well as the Dark Crystal... not on the menu. Bartenders are always friendly but they seen to have so many regulars or friends sitting at the bar. Ah its Ballard. I love the smoking crowed that always forms out front (at least when its not raining) but if you have a issue with cigarettes, I'm giving you fair warning. The best thing about Hazlewood is that they don't serve food. This is a bar...drink!

While most are going here late nights and elbowing through the crowd, we decided to check out the place in the early evening. This is the perfect little bar if you want to enjoy hanging out on a couch, talking without an echo while enjoying a whoop ass drink. The bartender doesn't skimp and even though we were the only people there for an hour, she made sure to check on us and keep our glasses full.

I love going here because it's tiny and cute! Most of the time when my husband and I stumble in here for a quick drink it's not that crowded and the bartenders are always nice. I even like the music they have on and I'm a picky princess when it comes to hearing music played in bars.

Great drink menu which we rather shamefacedly and apologetically ordered from (but they looked so good!) and the awesome bartender said she was HAPPY to make all those drinks because that's why people come in and how she makes money. And boy were they good. I love this place. So cute, so simple, so perfect.

I think I love this bar so much because one of the owners is often there doing good and lookin' fly. Sadly, Hattie's was never the same without him as a bartender. Nonetheless, I can't think of anything better than a stiff drink that comes equipped with a truffle and cigarette. Touch my tooter, that's hot.

I had a birthday party here last year and the cozy atmosphere created by the small space and lack of seating created a perfect mingling situation and demand for more birthday parties at the Hazlewood. My favorite staff members are Jessica(so cute) and Keith(so Boston).

I love Hazlewood. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite bars. They have Lillet! Plus: really friendly bartenders, casual vibe with sophisticated cocktails, and a consistently nice crew sitting out front. It's a great place to relax and talk with friends, or make new ones.

This place makes me happy, and I'm always grumpy! People there are generally friendly and the bar staff is really nice. It's a pleasant place to roll into if you are in the mood for a really good cocktail or you just want to sit back and relax with a few good friends on the couches upstairs.

I finally made it here and really wanted to like it. It is small and cozy which is cool although only 4 barstools is a few too few. I didn't make it upstairs because I was ready to leave. The bartender seemed nice when I came in but it was because of a few apparent regulars. After they left, she became dour and dismissive to those of us left. Bad, surly service is just unforgiveable. But, the bar is good enough to try again and perhaps I'll modify my outlook then.

Ahhh... As the first stop on our "best day off ever"- we decided to finally stop by Hazlewood. After walking by a few times and thinking it looked cool we were finally brave enough to cross the threshold. Oh so glad we did. I know it might sound strange to start your adventure with some cocktails, but that's just the kind of people we are. And it was 4:30pm. We slept in late, so what? I AM NOT A DRUNK! Um back to the review. I was instantly endeared by Pet Sounds- one of my favorite albums of all time (probably everone elses', too). Our very kindly bartendress took our drink order- mine a gin cocktail: Lillet, gin, peche de vigne, and a hint of orange. yum. Mark had a sazerac- rye, bitters, sugar and pastis. I don't really like whiskey, but I DO like pastis. Drinks: deelish. Decor: very swank yet comfy. if you visit, look in the peephole. it's hilarious. We also tried a few more drinks- and I have to say the Columbo is the greatest cocktail I have ever tasted. Ever. I could have had 20 of them. I might try next time. We also shared a "hazlewood": irish whiskey, peppermint tea, and I can't remember what else.... I was pretty drunk at that point. But happy indeed.

This place is cool. There are these picture viewer thingies in the wall upstairs. You look through and see old pictures. The drinks are good...real good. I will definatly be back the next time I am in Ballard.

I used to like Hazelwood but I don't know whats up with it lately. The nice decor is ofter spoiled with the bad art they choose to show on the walls. Wait staff is friendly. Bartender grumpy. Cocktails are pretty good. There just used to be more atmosphere.

Love, Love, Love this bar. You had better not plan on remaining sober if you go here. Bartenders are great, and the drinks more fabulous. Great atmosphere especially with the band playing upstairs.

Fun romantic little bar in Ballard. It has a ton of devoted regulars. I saw someone stop in here bags in hand on their way back from the grocery store. They just set them under their bar stool and cozied up to the bar. The upstairs is swanky. A good place to have naughty whispered conversations. The Dark and Stormy knocked my socks off. [edit] Oh... and it's tiny.

Oh, I get it. It's a place for Capitol Hill hipsters in the unassuming downtown of Ballard! Right, gotcha. The service is decent and polite, but the beer selection is god-awful. Sure they have fancy schmancy mixed drinks, but it's not worth the- pick one: a) wait b) atmosphere c) cost d) all of the above . I found myself having a claustrophobic reaction while looking for a seat holding an overly-priced beer that tasted like goat sweat (I imagine). Not pleasant, but worth another shot on a less crowded evening.

My all-time favorite bar. Good for a quick pre-dinner drink while waiting for your table at La Carta, or just a post-work toast to wind down. It took me a few passes before I entered the place because it's been a few years since I took pains to be cool, and the clientele outside seemed borderline hip. But once I got past the front door, I've been back for many a Minot Lite, Ginger Bourbon, and Lubo. Good for small gatherings, the seating upstairs can fill up. But there always seems to be enough room in the end.

I was surprised by how tiny this bar is. Like, real tiny. If you've been a few doors down to Ocho, you know what I mean. It basically has the bar downstairs where many people mill around. We managed to snag seats one by one upstairs in their lounge area but that probably holds a max of 20-22 people comfortably. We had damn near that so we maxed it out and had a nice little group gathering. I can see now why people are always hanging out in the gated area out front because there is not a lot of seating inside... I will give this place some props for their signature Hazlewood drink that comes with a cigarette & a truffle. What's better than one vice of strong mixed alcohol in a martini glass? 3 vices! Booze, cigarettes & chocolate! I don't smoke but the cigarette smelled mighty fine anyway. Someone you know can smoke it, I'm sure. I am also giving points for their etched steer skulls that adorn their walls which look just amazing. It isn't just random steer heads hanging up; it's art. I liked it. Kudos, Hazlewood. Perhaps if you can expand someday, that'd be cool. You'd easily fill any extra seats. ;)

I just love this place. It is nice and chill place to hang out with great drinks. It has a very loungy feel to it. The bar attracts lots of people fleeing the new Ballard scene. The service is excellent.
