Back in the day, my former employer used to buy us donuts every Thursday from this shop. At break time, we would all anticipate the three boxes of sugary treats and spend our coffee break together. I miss those days. I occasionally pop in but what reminded me are the two boxes that appeared in my office today. You may not find a donut with cereal on it but you will find a well-made, fresh donut at a reasonable price. I'm a sucker for the cream-filled, chocolate bar. The dough is nice and soft, not dry and crusty that you find at some places. The chocolate is fresh and doesn't crack off in a million pieces. The cream is light and dreamy. All of that together, reminds me of why I used to eat lots and lots of donuts. I'm also a sucker for the raspberry varieties. One of the reasons I don't pop in much anymore is because I rarely eat donuts. However, when I do, this is one of the places on a very short list that I'll go to.

I'm sorry to all those who love this place. I really have given it a few tries and each time it is terrifically underwhelming. No donut I have tried is any better than the average grocery chain donut.

While I don't indulge too often, I have had the good fortune of trying donuts from most, if not all of the major purveyors in Seattle. I can say hands down that Family Donut bests all of them. No matter what you pick, you can't go wrong. Their maple bacon bars is the best example of what such a donut should look like. Their old fashioneds have the perfect texture. Their cakes aren't too dense. In addition, they serve really great drip coffee that is lighter and more acidic than most places. You cannot go wrong, and considering how inexpensive this place is, you should buy some for your friends and family too.

I'm hesitant to write a glowing review, because I don't like it when he's sold out of my favorites, but they are just so good and he is so nice I just have to risk it. These are what donuts are supposed to be! Like what you crave and think about! You know how you think you'll splurge and be bad and get a donut at the grocery store, then it's just bland or yeasty and disappointing. Not like you remember donuts taste like and you wonder why you wanted one so badly. Well this place will make you fat, because it IS what you remember and crave, and now from writing this review I'll have to go do a donut run!!! Also the guy that is usually there is really funny, he's left me chuckling many times :). Hot cocoa is good too :)

I LOVE this place. The owner is super friendly and so nice. Every time we have a meeting at work, I would stop by this place in the morning and every one just love it so much. Prices are so reasonable, can't beat it. I will continue to come by this place and support local business. I had ordered all kinds of doughnuts from here, none of my co workers have ever complaints about it, I think they are all really good.

The donuts are so good here! I have been coming here for years. I just love the simple sugar donut. It is so moist and has great flavor. I then started trying the others, and none disappointed me. I recently began bringing donut holes for my co-workers, and they cannot stop saying how tasty these are. I absolutely recommend them! Plus, the owners are very kind. Even the other customers are nice.

Love this place. I'll pick up donuts for the family every few weeks when both my fiancé and I have the same day off and I have never been disappointed. The donuts are amazing and the gentleman who's always behind the counter is a pleasure to order from. As an added bonus, they're actually within easy walking distance which is great considering we don't own a car.

Amazing, fresh donuts! They have a marble bar with crumbled bacon on top if you're into the Voodoo type donut. Nice owner!!!

  • Tabatha J.

We love coming to this place. Enjoy it more than most of those new age fancy shops. I love the crueler and maple bacon bar. Crispy fresh bacon bits on a fluffy maple doughnut. It doesn't get better than that. Owner is always nice. Prices are great.

Small place but great donuts. Have tried first time a week ago and was amazed with the texture. It is a pretty similar to top pot or but better and costs less and much better then dunkin. Friendly guy At the counter, will definitely support neighborhood business in the future.

Best doughnuts around hands down. Apple fritters are killer her. The owner is also extremely friendly.

Hands down, my favorite donuts in Seattle. I work near a Top Pot but will go out of my way to come here instead. These donuts are light, not overly sweet. I find Krispy Kreme and Top Pot to be cloyingly over-sugared, and the top pot near my work has served slightly burnt donuts on occasion. The donuts at family donut are just right. I especially love the French Crullers. When they are fresh, the light, soft, puffiness is unbeatable!

  • Jeff G.

Excellent Maple Bacon bar $1.75. They were not in the display case at 6:30 am on Sat. I had to ask for them, and he got them from the back. Excellent old fashion donuts, and excellent French donuts (out here called crullers). Friendly greeting when I walked in. Credit cards accepted. The shop is a short trip off I 5. I ate too many already! Yum!!! Now some exercise to burn off some of those calories.

OK, so I just love this place. I'd been there a few times and every time I went in I was like "DANG this is the best donut place in Seattle!" And there's always the one guy working there (must be the owner?) and he's really nice. Anyway, today I had a random donut craving, and I was in the area and remembered that Family Donut was nearby and stopped by. The guy was there, he had exactly the donuts I wanted (chocolate cake with chocolate icing), and the donuts were delicious. It's not fancy. But it's reasonably priced, the donuts are DELICIOUS and fresh, and they have a small but adequate drink selection (soda, water, milk, chocolate milk, etc.). Seriously, the best good old donut place in Seattle. They also have bacon maple bars now.

Good quality and relatively inexpensive. Really liked the apple fritter and yeast donuts.

Jesus cinnamon-toast christ this place is phenomenal. Since moving from Oregon, I've gone a a long while without a doughnut, much less a doughnut so good it causes a warm sensation that starts at the back of your head and melts to your jawbone. One that makes phosphenes in your eyes to take the shape of angels; I'm referring, of course, to a doughnut like Voodoo Donut's ODB. Family Donut does not have an answer to Voodoo's old dirty bastard, but what they do have are pillowy buttermilks, old-fashioneds that are easily the best I have ever had--they are a bit more firm than their cakey colleagues, but give immediately once you breach their toasty exterior--and a famed apple fritter that my words simply cannot do justice. I have tried a good amount of what this shop has to offer, and everything I've had has been very, very good. If you have a cohort to split this bounty with, I'd suggest the following: - Bacon maple bar - Chocolate iced old fashioned - Apple fritter - Iced Apple cinnamon filled turnover-doughnut hybrid thing (It's bigger than a filled doughnut, but it's not really a turnover. All I know for sure is that it's more than the sum of its parts). - Raspberry jelly-filled I don't suggest getting all of these at once if you do not have people to share with, because self-control will be an alien phrase when you're looking at a box of these five little glories. The prices are great at a little less than $1 a doughnut, with their famous apple fritters going for a humble $1.85. There's no pretense here, just amazing doughnuts at a price far below every other comparable shop in Seattle. This is the best place in the city for doughnuts, and arguably the entire Northwest.

  • Brian K.

Made fresh every morning, this place is one of the best kept secrets in the donut world. Has the small-business feel, and prices are reasonable. If you're a real bargain hunter, come snag a dozen day-old's for just $4 in the morning.

    (5)
  • Cathy H.

I have going there for years. Tony and his wife do an outstanding job in the world of donuts. My favorite is the bear claws but the maple bacon is another quickly working it's way up the ladder. I nicknamed it Tony's place. Go there and tell him Cathy sent you. What are you waiting gor? Go...now!

  • Bailey W.

It could be the fact that growing up my dad knew where every doughnut shop in town was, or maybe it was because we always returned here. But Family Doughnut has a special place in my heart none the less. The guy behind the counter is always more than friendly and ready to suggest that perfect sugary start to your morning. The selection is unbeatable and, trust me, once you have your first bite you'll understand why people drive from quite a ways to get here.

This is a good place to buy cheap homemade doughnut. They have many variation of doughnuts, but they only have limited amount of them.

I haven't had a really good donut since spud nut closed up 35 or more years ago, At least not until I found this place. Excellent, fresh every day donuts, good coffee, reasonably priced, really nice people. It is a small shop, almost exclusively for carryout. the last time i was there, there was only one table. the parking lot is almost as small as the shop is and several other business use it as well. if you want to use a credit card at this place there is a minimum purchase required I don't remember what that minimum is but it exists.

Best doughnuts I've had! Been a proud customer for 6 years!

  • Shelly L.

The donuts are amazing here. The small family donut shop is run by a really nice husband and wife couple who have been in the business for many years. They are located very close to NW Hospital and Northgate Mall. When I was 9 days overdue with my 2nd baby, the doctor told me to walk to get my contractions started. Well, I walked to Family Donuts and got one of their yummy apple fritters. When I walked back to the hospital, contractions started immediately and I wasn't able to eat my fritter until I delivered my baby. The next best thing after meeting my newborn baby was eating my apple fritter. I recommend their glazed crullers, apple fritters (taste like a flattened funnel cake), maple bars, and custard cream donuts.

Every Wednesday and Sunday I come in to get a maple cinnamon roll maple bar and a old fashioned maple donut. (Not all for me my girl eats the maple bar) Tony always throws in a couple of donut holes for my bulldogs. He has been there for going on 20 years I've talked to some other customers that have been going in for over a decade, thats amazing. Great donuts great people best donuts in the northwest.

  • Tony Y.

This review is based on stopping by around 2pm, thus, it may not be fair because most donut places have a full selection in the morning. But, when i visited the selection was very limited. Only about 5 or 6 different types of doughnuts to select from. The worker behind the counter was very short and just wanted me to order my doughnut and get out. I prefer a little bit more customer service.

Wonderful bacon maple bar. Fluffy donut topped with sweet maple icing covered with savory crumbled bacon.

These are some seriously spectacular donuts! The owner is friendly, welcoming and surprisingly trim! :D He makes killer bacon maple bars, a brilliant old-fashioned variety and lots of cake donuts with creative toppings. Excellent products for an excellent price.

This place is a hidden gem. We went to this place based on a high recommendation from one of our friends. We also brought 5 hungry college kids w/us. Everyone agreed the donuts were really good! I REALLY liked the bacon maple bar (so soft & tasty). My hubby liked the apple fritter the best (not super sweet). We also tried the crueller & it was ok. There were old-fashioned donuts & twists that we didn't get to try. Prices were reasonable, the owner was very friendly & funny. The only disappointment was that donut holes were all sold out early & we were there about 10:30am. I will definitely be back & recommend to friends! Try it out, you won't be disappointed!

The guy who runs this place is probably the single nicest person I've ever had sell me donuts. Also, the donuts are, as promised in another review, better than Top Pot. I can't say I've had donuts from every single shop in the city, but I've been to the majority of them more than once and this place has the overall best donuts.

  • Mareth L.

I probably drove by here about 6,000 times without ever noticing Family Donut Shop. 6,000 missed opportunities for the best donuts in Seattle. They don't have butterfinger donuts, bacon maple bars or other trendy choices. What they do have is a great selection of classic donuts like cruellers, cakes and fritters. They are fresh as can be with a crispy outer layer and delicous light center. The service is fast and friendly and the prices are great. Top Pot has NOTHIN' on this place.

These are some pretty good donuts. I'm no donut expert, but I'm planning on becoming one by the end of today, even if it ends up with me ten pounds heavier. Family Donut Shop is the first on my list of bakery spots to check out and it didn't disappoint. I got an old-fashioned donut, a maple bar, and a bacon maple. I've heard of bacon maple of course but had never actually tried one and it was undoubtedly delicious. I didn't like it as much as I expected to though, I've been really looking forward to having a taste. There's just so much hype around this donut and I had really high expectations. I'm not hating though, I would eat it again quite happily. The old-fashioned is one of my least favorite kinds of donuts, but it's my boyfriend's favorite so we ordered it. I thought it was better than any I've tried, but as much as I'm no donut expert I'm really not an old-fashioned expert. He said it was a good one, but not the best he'd had. The maple was really airy and sweet. It was a scrumptious maple bar, but in my heart I still know there's something better out there. I'm sure coming right at opening when they're still warm and mouth watering would benefit my case but hey, I'm not getting up at 4 AM for my cause.. I'm just not dedicated enough I guess. :) The owner was super friendly and obviously loves to make customers laugh and feel happy. However when I asked him which his favorite donuts were, he just said they were all good & that I couldn't go wrong with any selection. I believe him, I'm sure they're all great but when I ask for somebody to suggest something to me I really want to see what they think their WOW product is. The coffee was not very good. definitely nowhere near the worst I've had but it is what bumped my review from four to three stars. It's a classic combination, donuts and coffee, and I think the coffee should hold it's own! I'm happy with my experience though, I would come again but I wouldn't go far out of my way to do so. However I do wish I had tried more donuts to get a better read of the place, and it wouldn't have been much more expensive to do so. The three donuts, a coffee, and a hot chocolate came to just under $8. The dozen was just $10, and the half dozen option was about as much as we spent altogether. I guess I was thinking more about my waistline than my wallet, but I won't make this mistake again!

Fresh donuts are great but it's the coffee that's worth the stop in. Drip coffee that actually tastes good! Forget the overpriced Starbucks or the burnt gas station joe.

    (5)
  • Matthew L.

I don't need to say much, this guy's donuts speak for themselves. The maple bars are outstanding, the apple fritters are fabulous and the cruellers are exemplary. Get there early for the best selection because as another reviewer mentioned, they keep their batches and variety smaller in order to maintain quality. The owner is a super nice guy, to boot! You need to check this place out!!!

My wife and I have just moved here from Denver and this shop was our inaugural breakfast and it did not disappoint, I cannot add to the superlatives already said, these are simply the best donuts I have ever eaten. But I can add some of my favorites, the chocolate cake with chocolate icing are our favorites, they have a crunchy exterior and a moist cake like interior that is wonderful, the icing is rich and chocolaty though quite sweet, get some coffee or milk. And our runner up favorite are the crullers, tender, eggy, chewy, just as cruller should be, again we favored the chocolate iced out of personal preference but having had the plain iced and maple they are just as good. It is worth the drive for these donuts, we live in Rainier Beach and yet every Saturday morning I am off to get a dozen or two. Also, protip! there are boxes of day-olds for $3 a dozen and they are still better than most donuts I've had and a steal at that price. - James

Straight up best donuts in Seattle. Before you ask, yes, I have tried just about every donut shop in the city. If there are any I've missed, I'm sure I'll get to them soon. I have a passion for donuts that is shameful. The perfect donut is slightly crisp on the outside, giving way to a tender, light, airy bread. They are slightly sweet, but not overpoweringly so. The frosting he uses are flavorful rather than just sugar. Add to all of this the owner of the shops friendly smile! He works hard and is always in a good mood. Let's support our small business owners who do quality!

  • Johnny W.

Take with a grain of salt, given that I came in towards the end of the day, and my usual go-to doughnut (a raised) was completely sold out. So, instead, I opted for two old fashioned doughnuts. And, while not bad flavor wise, I found the texture a bit unusual: think of a somewhat fluffy cookie, almost crouton-like in texture. Not exactly to my tastes, but, unfortunately, I won't get a chance to drop by and try these guys again anytime soon.

  • Michael N.

I'll start off by saying that I don't eat donuts all that much. I love them but they don't agree with my waistline! I stopped here to buy a couple dozen for my coworkers and decided to have them throw in a maple bar just in case. The place looks like you would envision a donut shop to look, small and inconspicuous. All that changed as soon as I was welcomed by the man behind the counter. He was very helpful and knowledgable. He told me that he has been doing this a long time and he makes what he and his family enjoy. He doesn't just make something to sell that he doesn't eat himself. All in all he was very gracious and appreciative of my business. On to the donut!! The maple bar is about the only donut I will ever order, and this one topped them all! Light but substantial, sweet but not over the top. The topping was creamy and tasted absolutely fresh and homemade, not hard and sugary. Needless to say, my unexpected stop to get donuts started my whole day on a positive note! Give them a shot, you will not be disappointed!!!! Not to mention, it feels so much better supporting a family owned and operated business.

Best. Donuts. Ever. It's possible that I am actually in love with the cruellers.

  • Michelle K.

Family Donut is awesome. Tasty and always with a huge selection to choose from. My boyfriend and I walk there on Sundays sometimes for a morning treat. We are always greeted with a smile. Only things I don't like: decor and seating is dated. Creepy bums that hang out near the 7-11. and the bushes that line the parking lot smell like urine. The last two things have nothing to do with Family Donut, I know, but location is everything. Don't let the bums, the pee bushes, and the old interior design scare you away. This place is great!

    (4)
  • Angie L.

Awesome donuts! You can tell they are made fresh daily because there isn't an overwhelming number of donuts sitting out. We came at the end of a Saturday rush and there was probably 10 of each left. We've been back and will keep coming back!

  • Aaron C.

I discovered Family Donut over 10 years ago when I was living in Northgate. Several times a week I would stop by and pick up a few tasty donuts or maybe even a box of a dozen day olds (which were only $2 back in the day). Then I moved away from Northgate. The donut dream was over. 10 years later I happened to be in the area, and stopped back in. Nothing had changed. Now I'm generally a pretty lazy person, but these are tasty... no... EXTREMELY TASTY donuts, so I find myself driving 30 miles south every now and then to revisit this place! My favorite donut - "The White Twist". Mmmmmm.... EXTREMELY TASTY!!

  • Josh H.

I'll just concur with the other positive reviews. The shop is a bit cramped, so they don't have a gigantic selection (and some of them would be stale if they did, right?), but what they do, they do well. I'm a fried-cake kind of guy: plain or old-fashioned (the sort of daisy-shaped ones, you know?) and I LOVE the versions here. A cup of coffee and one (or two!) of these bad boys is enough to see you through whatever lies ahead. And the day-old dozen for three bucks (you don't get to choose; just grab a box and take your chances) is a terrific deal. Makes my fellow teachers happy when I stop in, that's for sure!

  • Angie K.

So, I'm trying to drive to Northgate and I missed the turnoff, got tricked by that place where you can't turn left, ended up on the other side of the freeway. Starving, I look around for something quick to grab for breakfast before hitting the mall. I spot Family Donuts and decide to give it a try based solely on the fact that I won't have to turn left. Say what? An amazing donut shop in a completely random area? I had a plain with sprinkles - light, sweet, you could tell it was fried but it wasn't greasy, and did I mention it was 75 CENTS!! YESSSS!! I consider myself somewhat of a donut connoisseur but I to have to say, some of the donut prices out there are a little ridiculous. Not Family Donuts! I didn't try a coffee, but they had great coffee prices too. Everything in the case looked amazing - I will definitely be back.

Glazed cruller is so soft and yummy!

  • Henry S.

Imma keep this short and simple. These are the reasons why this place rocks: 1. Best apple fritter in Seattle, hands down 2. Opens at 5am daily 3. Price is hard to beat 4. Plenty of options to choose from 5. $3 for a box of day-old donuts

    (4)
  • Ayman E.

Probably no need to reinforce what everyone else has already said. This place's apple fritters are excellent. We usually get a variety of things and we are never disappointed.

  • Formica D.

This small shop serves classic, delicious donuts. They don't have an exceptional variety (maybe 12-15 different kinds at peak hours), but that doesn't bother me since I prefer the simpler stuff. Service is always fast and friendly, and prices are less expensive than places like Top Pot. However, you probably won't want to hang out here like you would at Top Pot. While it's very clean, it's also basic. Pick up a dozen (there's parking out front) and go!

  • Caliope S.

I agree that these donuts are some of the best I've ever tasted; however two things will keep me from coming here regularly. The first is the lack of warmth from the guy (presumably owner) behind the counter on my last visit. Every time I asked what kind of donut a certain one was, instead of just telling me, he scoffed the answers in a snide way, as if I should know just by looking. I've only been there twice, and the first time they were nearly all out of donuts, so I hadn't seen most of the varieties before. I felt he could have been nicer to a new customer he'd never seen before. The woman who served me the first time (presumably his wife) was very friendly and chatty, so it was a disappointment to be treated the way I was on the second visit. My other reason for not returning for a while is that both times I've eaten here, the donuts (yes, I ate more than one both times!) kept repeating on me for at least 24 hours afterward. Pretty gross. Taste good going down, not so much when you're burping them up constantly. :-/ I thought it might be a fluke the first time, but since it happened both times, I'm wary about coming back. The only donut worth coming back for is the krueller. YUM! That recipe is a winner!

  • Danielle H.

Delicious. Some of the best donuts I have found in Seattle when you are looking for that donut shop (not Top Pot type) feel. Makes me miss Rose Donuts in San Diego. Their old fashioned and cruellers are notably good here. The cake donuts are moist and fluffy as well.

  • Lisa T.

A donut shop in a strip mall. Normally, I'd stay away...but given the great reviews and the fact that it's a few minutes walking distance from my house - I had to give Family Donut a whirl. While my plan was to only get a couple of donuts, I managed walking out with a half dozen as to take advantage of their pricing...and b/c there were just TOO many to choose from. I thought all the maple icing donuts were better than the choc covered ones. Had to try the cruellers and they were awesome! Will pass on the bavarian cream filled one next time. Love the buttermilk bar! Basically, all of them were good...some better than others. It's just fun to pick some out and try them. Downside...major donut coma that day!! Will need a good break before I can go back to try more.

You'll notice that just about everyone who reviews Family Donut enthusiastically raves about something different. That's because the friendly couple who own Family Donut are the definitive authority on everything in the donut case. Whether you're a plain glazed person, a cake donut person, a maple bar person, an apple fritter person, or a one-of-everything person, Family Donut always delivers a five-star donut. I've been a customer for almost twenty five years, and now you should be. These donuts, which are always beautiful and always fresh, are light and puffy with just the right amount of sugar. They're not greasy, and they're never dry or stale. You'll lose interest in the other donut places. Goodbye overly sweet Krispy Kremes. So long, sweet, greasy, dense, dry Top Pots! See ya later, inconsistent-but-sometimes-good Ly's! They do their basics flawlessly. You'll never have a better plain glazed. They also make REAL French Crullers, and they're out of this world. And if you like exotic favorites like orange or strawberry-frosted donuts, you'll also be impressed. My favorite might be the cinnamon twist. You may think you've had cinnamon twists, but you haven't had a cinnamon twist until you've had a Family Donut cinnamon twist! The cinnamon twist is, and this is not a compliment I'd give to just anyone, better than an elephant ear! And it's more of an appropriate serving size. The white twist is also delicious. Jelly filled? Delicious. Cream filled (with or without chocolate)? Delicious also. Family Donut even has a cream-filled maple donut! Yum! Isn't it about time you brought a dozen donuts to the office, the auto shop, the school, the hospital, wherever? And when everyone asks where the "awesome and amazing" donuts came from, let them know about Family Donut!

  • Junko S.

Sure there's Mighty-O's and there's Top Pot, but the donuts there pale in comparison to the donuts from Family Donut Shop. It's a small mom & pop joint, a tucked away little gem. They have fabulous apple fritters, chocolate donuts, glazed, cake, French cruller, maple bars, donut holes, donuts with coconut, donuts with nuts and many many more! My two favorites (it's hard to just have one favorite) are the orange and rasberry glazed donuts. So good. The donuts aren't heavy and not very greasy. The store itself is very small so I suggest grabbing some donuts to go.

Simply the best donuts in Seattle. Fresh, sweet, tasty, filling, yummy, and every other wonderful thing donuts could be. Their day olds are better than most places fresh. Krispy who?

  • Rhashida B.

Good donuts! Great prices and the man that owns it is so nice and friendly. Its kind of a hole in the wall and I wouldn't rate on the ambiance- but hey its a donut shop and the donuts are delicious. Just like everyone else said- don't waste your time (or money) on Krispy Kreme as this is the superior alternative.

  • Sarah B.

As far as donuts go this place gets 4 stars. You know it is a good sign when you walk into a random donut shop in the Northgate area at 6:15am and there is a line 5 people deep. Every customer was buying a minimum or 1 dozen donuts and clearly were regulars. I now understand why. Not only do they have about 30 donuts to choose from they are delicious! I purchased (they take credit!) an assorted dozen for my coworkers. Everyone commented on how good they were and non greasy. My buttermilk bar was super good. Kind of heavy (like they are supposed to be) with a good sugar glaze but not in the least bit greasy. The location is kind of far for a quick donut run on the weekend however it is the perfect place to stop off on a road trip. When you find yourself heading north on I-5 in the AM. hop off at the Northgate exit and get yourself some donuts for the road. You can then zip across the street to Starbucks to get some coffee too since I wouldn't recommend donut shop coffee. :)

I only recently 'discovered' this place and I'm super glad I did! I've tried a few of their donuts and they were awesome but my true love would be for their crullers (chocolate frosted = my weakness). Light & fluffy with the perfect texture and a rich, creamy chocolate frosting...YES. Sadly, I'm not a morning person so usually by early afternoon, they're out but if they've got em, I buy several. Plus, they're cheaper than KrispieKreme or TopPot and, in some ways, a lot better. My only 'complaint' is the location. It's a bitch trying to get in and out of that parking lot!

Seriously worth the trip from downtown! Since moving to WA I was really upset to find out that grocery stores up here have utterly terribly doughnuts and no old fashioneds. I went looking online and went with the best reviewed doughnut shop. When my husband and I walked in I was delighted. All my favorite kinds of doughnuts plus a few I hadn't tried sat deliciously in the cases. The guy behind the counter was nice and I cant wait til our next visit!

The check cashing place next door is creepy, and the mini strip mall location doesn't do this place enough justice. The donuts here are FAR superior than Top Pot. Better selection, fresh, fluffy, cheap and MEAN~!! The maple bar is so tasty. The glaze isn't too sweet, it doesn't overpower, and doesn't have that greasy fried aftertaste like Top Pot. The man who owns this place is there holding the fort down every time I go in. He is the sweetest guy. He chats it up with his elderly customers that stop in daily, and always has something nice to say. Bring cash, and buy a dozen and treat your co-workers. Why wouldn't you?

My family has been going here for years whenever we want doughnuts. They have the best apple fritters I have ever tasted. Just thinking about them is making my mouth water! Their glazed doughnut holes are bomb too. All of their other doughnuts are yummy! Skip krispy kreme, come here instead and support this local business! The owners are always friendly. You won't be sorry!

The best donuts in town - hands down. Don't waste your time with the pretentious Top Snot or others in that category. If you want a delicious, affordable, friendly (yes, their donuts are friendly) and real donut, Family Donut is the only place to go!

Yum yum in my tum tum!! The Mr was craving a donut before going to bed last night and I woke up to read the reviews for this place. You guys definitely did not disappoint. The man behind the counter was quite friendly and patient while we picked our sweet dozen. Hubby picked out the Bavarian creamed filled donut, and the owner proceeded to correct him and say it was the Seattle Cream donut. LOL! Their cinnamon twist is very good and even though its coated with sugar and cinnamon, it wasn't too sweet. The cruller also my favorite, is quite good, and dare I say my favorite? Yes their crullers are the best!!!! Love that they also take the plastic! We were running errands around town, and each time we got to the car, it smelled absolutely like heaven!! The prices are so wallet friendly and surely beat out the fancy schmancy joints! On a side note, I wouldn't want to mess with owner, not only will he throw a hard 4 day old "hoof" donut at you but will probably take you down in 3 seconds flat! He's one buff dude! I don't see buff Asian dudes often! This place is dangerous to my diet, but thanks to the yucky parking lot, it will be a once a week or so indulgence.

So, I saw the reviews for this place and had to give it a try, especially since it's so close to me! I'm a Top Pot fan, can't help it, so I was a bit in shock to see that people think this place is better than Top Pot. I went to Family Donuts and got an ordinary cake donut with sprinkles. It wasn't as great as I'd hoped. Top Pot definitely beats them in the sprinkled donut category. BUT I thought I'd give them another try before I wrote a review. I went again today, and OMG their cruellers......a WONDER covered with glaze. THEEEEE best I've ever had and cruellers are one of my favs. Top Pots aren't good at all. So, to conclude, it depends on the donut you get. I'll definitely go back for more cruellers but I'll have to give some of the other ones a try to se if they really are as good as people say. Cheers! Not to mention they are CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP! 75 cents a piece or something. The price is amazing and the donut, although only decent from what I've had so far, is well worth the price.

This is my favorite donut shop in the Seattle area. They simply have great-quality donuts. Nothing fancy, just the classic goodies done right! Everything is fresh and tasty, and there is always a good assortment of donuts. Like others have mentioned, the location and parking lot is a little awkward. Plus, Northgate Way can get pretty crazy during business hours. Nonetheless, your efforts will sure be rewarded with amazing donuts!

My boyfriend moved to Seattle in July, and obviously the commute between there and Orlando is kind of a beast. Family Donut almost makes it worth it. Almost. I have a gigantic, yet discriminating sweet tooth. If I'm going to inhale some baked goods, they better be worth the calories. I've never had a tastier strawberry frosted donut in my life. The sugar-dipped variety is also amazing. Add in the friendly service and it's a 5-star experience. I'm glad that I live almost 3000 miles away or else I'd probably be in a Hoveround by now!

I love Buttermilk Bar doughnuts. They rank awfully high on my list of favorite things to splurge on. Lately tho, the only buttermilk bars i've even seen available are the ones at Fred Meyer, and i assure you, i've tried them all: plain glazed, maple frosted, chocolate frosted, cinnamon sugar... none are worth the calories (shocker, right?). So, I gave chase to the paragon of buttermilk bar in Seattle, and I found them here. Crisp yet melting outer crust gives way to fluffy, creamy, buttermilk-breadyness. Not excessively sweet, but certainly sweet enough to dispatch with any sweet tooth craving you may have. The shape may be to thank for the perfect sweetness to tangy-ness ratio, as these buttermilk bars aren't so much bars, as balls with a deep crack running across the top, leaving just the right amount of exposed flesh to coat with sugary glaze to get some in every bite. Though I speak of the traditional, plain glazed bar, Family Donut also offers them in maple and chocolate glazed, neither of which i have tried, but both of which are, i don't doubt, fantastic. One bar: $.95. Next time, i think i'll get a dozen. ;)

What a colorful and intense selection of donuts. We stopped in after having lunch next door and after learning of the low cost donut selection I had no choice but to buy a blueberry donut. It was delicious. The store is lovely, has a huge variety of visually stunning donuts, in flavors you don't see everywhere like orange. If you like donuts or are interested in artfully made sweets Family Donut is a fun place to grab a quick treat.

Normally, I'm not a big donut eater (I mean, I love them but I don't let myself have them), but the other day it was rainy and I was feeling sad about being unemployed, so I figured I needed a big ol' frosted pastry to improve my outlook. Terrell M. recommended the Family Donut near me, so I decided to give them a try, and I'm glad I did. This location is kind of hard to get in and out of - it's at the end of a little strip mall with a teeny parking lot, and you have to make a difficult left turn at a busy intersection to get back on Northgate Way. But this will just give you more precious time to gobble your donuts while you wait, so it's not all bad. The store is small and kind of unimpressive, but they do have a good selection of donuts. I got the deer-hoof-shaped buttermilk donut and a pink sprinkle cake donut. The buttermilk one was unlike any donut I've had - chewier and more substantial than a regular donut, with a creamy richness from the buttermilk. It was more like cake than a donut, but much better than a crappy old-fashioned. The pink frosting turned out to be strawberry (I thought it would just be sugar flavor), but was surprisingly tasty too, even though I normally don't like flavored frosting. Two donuts were $1.50, which seems like a darn good price to me - that's about the price of one specialty donut at Krispy Kreme. The guy behind the counter was friendly and patiently waited while I dithered over the donuts. Hopefully I won't have a bad enough day to need donut fortification for a while, but if I do, now I know where to go.

Had a maple-covered creme filled. Awesome. Pleasantly surprised! The doughnut was perfectly cooked, one of the best I've had! The espresso was average.

Pros: Best doughnuts in town. They're flavorful and fried just right. The price is also right. Cons: Coffee and parking suck so badly that they detract from the benefits. The coffee and parking don't stop me from dropping by any time that I'm in the neighborhood, though.

The owners are awesome--friendly, warm, always remember you. Their donuts are cheap. Try the apple fritters. You'll never eat a soggy fritter again. Whenever I have a reason to go anywhere near Northgate, I stop here. Get lunch at the Taco Truck across the street and dessert here. Yum!

I saw the article in the P-I about this place and had to check it out. Me being a doughnut connoisseur, I try every shop at least once. I've been to Mighty-O, Dunkin, Westernco, Top Pot, Winchell's, even Mrs. Johnson's. This place has rockin' doughnuts. The apple fritters are deep fried with the right amount of crunch, unlike most places that have doughy fritters. The crullers are heavenly and the old fashioneds are, are...just phenomenal. I would have rated it a five stars, but the coffee sucks. Actually it's just brown water. Location is not that great, with tough entry and exit. But hey this is Seattle where traffic sucks because our Mayor and City Council is a bunch of spineless idiots set on getting people on a transit system that doesn't service anyone. Sorry, I forgot this is a review about a doughnut shop. If you love doughnuts this is a place you must experience. Just go somewhere else for coffee. Oh yeah, the prices are better than Mighty-O and Top Pot.

You must try their French Crullers. The glazed Cruller is the best. I liked the chocolate frosting Cruller too, but be prepared for amazing rich chocolateness!!! I'm a choco-holic, and it might be too much for me...Ah, heck, who am I kidding?! ;o)

You can still get buttermilk doughnuts here. They are big and yummy. No one in town can touch this.

Cake donuts, Raised Donuts & French Crullers. Oh My! Orange, Strawberry/Raspberry, Maple & Vanilla frostings. Oh Yes! The frosting variety & execution was a highlight for me, that & the fact that I have a weakness for the French (ah eggy goodness) Crullers. The thoughtful owner/operator has priced many of the different varieties by the dozen. Rather than keeping it simple, he is just trying to serve the public tasty pastries at a fair price. And they serve apple fritters too. Damn, yet another weak spot in my armor (who am I kidding, my armor would be be fried pastry if it wouldn't kill me). I couldn't finish my cup of drip coffee. Whoa, to find good drip in a shoppe would be a fine thing. Nothing too fancy here, just a case full of doughnuts looking for an empty belly & service with a smile for a fair nickle.

THE BEST Donuts. So reasonably priced, the staff is so lovely, the location so convenient, and woefully in my old hood. Sometimes, on a morning off I drive all the way from the RB to Northgate for these little sweeties. Tasty treats...

Delicious, delicious donuts. The best donuts I've ever eaten are at Delicious Orchards in NJ. Their apple cider donuts are out of this world. So good I once spent nearly $200 to have a couple dozen express shipped to Maui when I lived out there. So good that if God had a last meal he would choose those donuts. Family donut's cake donuts are almost as good, not quite, but pretty damned close. Easily the best donuts I've had in seattle.

I have always had incredible doughnuts here, and the staff is friendly to boot. If they ever have the Blood Orange ones in stock, indulge. Those things are divine.

OMFG!!!!!!! This doughnut shop is paradise, one bite of the plain glazed can only be described as euphoria! Say goodbye to those over-hyped, over-priced gloppy-frosting covered stale cupcakes when you're craving a sweet treat, it's the year of the doughnut! Love the friendly guy behind the counter, always happy and helpful and the prices make you want to tip generously for the salvation from inferior fried dough. Wish the shop was in my neighborhood but it's a much anticipated treasure when visiting family in Seattle. MMMM!!!

I have been in search for the best apple fritter in north Seattle.. I think i found it! Crunchy on the outside, soft moist yumminess on the inside. My boyfriend and I tried the other selection as well, we both where very pleased. Probably some of the best dough nuts we have had. We will be back our next "fat ass" day.

I love to go here on my way to the Polyclinic for check-ups (ironic, I know). Even though last time I just stopped in for coffee, the very friendly lady who works there gave me a free sample. And, of course, the donut I sampled was so delicious that I couldn't resist buying some! Family Donut is friendly, the bakery smells wonderful, and their delicious donuts are made with love.

BEST DONUTS, and I don't even like donuts. haha but I really enjoy this place's donuts. If you're lucky, sometimes they'll have a few boxes of day old donuts for 2.50 each

I love this place! The maple bars are amazing and Tony is a great guy! You can't go wrong here!!

  • Tiffany S.

Yeah, I need a donut like a hole in the head, but the girls made this place sound so tempting I couldn't resist as I drove past this morning. There was one older gentleman in there who stepped aside to let me order which I thought was very nice. Chivalry isn't dead in the donut world. You gotta love a place that when you ask, "What's that orange one?" they reply, "Orange." Not fancy mango-guava. No. Orange. I ordered a chocolate old-fashioned, and I have to admit it was a little too chocolatey. As if there were such a thing, I know, but on rare occasions, there is. For 65 cents I can handle the elusive chocolate overload. And now you know where to go when you're craving an orange donut.

  • Lea D.

I love the cute lady that works here, I don't know her name but I stop in here sometimes to grab a dozen for my office and she's always very sweet. The donuts are great especially the chocolate cream-filled. Also reasonably priced but I don't know how much other donut shops charge. This place had a dozen for $6.

    (5)
  • Jessica A.

The donuts were delicious. I tried a glazed yeast and a cinnamon bun. Both were wonderful. The donut was a very slightly crispy on the outside, with the inside being light and airy. The prices were very reasonable. My husband and I bought 6, and the price was just over $6.

  • Julia L.

Family Donut makes French Crullers, which gives them an A in my book. Sure, there's no seating or atmosphere and the place often looks deserted, but the donuts are great and fresh and did I mention the crullers?

Love this place. The donuts are tasty, not expensive, and they don't try to do too many other things.

  • R R.

We love Family Donut! The best, freshest, tastiest donuts in Seattle. I prefer them to Top Pot. Tony and Vanna are always nice to my kids and we leave with an extra treat in the box. Try the vanilla cruller or the basic glazed raised--it's just darn good.

Tiny place, huge taste! I think their doughnuts are excellent.

  • Steve H.

This unassuming hole-in-the-wall offers the best donut in Seattle. Really fresh with a light and chewy texture. Top Pot and Mighty-O tend to be really heavy in comparison for my taste. The couple who own the place do it all and every flavor is consistently good. Best of all is the price, way more affordable to buy a dozen for work then the hipster donut joints. I stick to the donuts after getting a bad latte, but there is a Starbucks down the road...

    (5)
  • Garrett B.

Best. Donuts. Ever. Seriously. The glazed are usually still warm, and have that ever-so-slightly crispy sugar-shell that gives to your teeths' advances to reveal the moist and cakey deliciousness that follows. These are donuts done the classic way. No money poured into shag carpeting and wi-fi. No "mod lamps that aren't really lamps and aren't really mod" made in some african country to help support some tribe or other. No 1950's style deli case sitting against the wall strictly for the kitcsh value...its a 1950's style deli case that WORKS to display these amazing fried dough and sugar creations. The coffee? Not starbucks, not zoka, not some small micro-roaster that works and trades fairly with others. Its coffee. The way your dad wanted it. As a dipper for the donut you're there to buy. Though in my opinion, it would be a shame to ruin such a jewel by dissolving it.

  • G. M.

The store itself isn't much to look at inside, but the doughnuts are awesome. I used to stop in on the way to work on occasion when I worked in Seattle, but I haven't worked in Seattle since 2007. I was in the area a couple months ago for an appointment and decided I needed a sugar fix so I stopped in. The owner/baker said "long time no see!" I couldn't believe he remembered me after two years. They open at 5am, so you know he's in there very early baking away. This is the the only place that I'll get apple fritters from, they're so fresh and crunchy on the outside. I also think it's great that the frosting on the doughnuts are flavored, rather than just being plain sugar frosting with food coloring added.

Love this place great donuts for cheap and the owners are always friendly and welcoming, though the maple frosting is a might bit too sweet for my taste but thats just me.

This little donut shop near where I live is just wonderful. It's the charm and quality that you would find in a small shop. The owner is there early in the morning - sometimes when I come home really late at night from school I can smell the donuts being prepared. The donuts are fresh and moist, if I ever want a donut, this is the place to go.

    (5)
  • Alice R.

It's my neighborhood donut shop. It's family run and the donuts here are fresh. Of course, come early if you want a good selection. They make em fresh and when they run out, you gotta come back tomorrow! My favorites are the crullers and maple bars. It's a solid place to have a donut and cup of coffee. Sometimes, you can get a box of day-olds that are still really good.

This doughnut shop is one of the few that actually sells French Crullers, which are my personal favorite! And they are glorious. Make sure to arrive early; Everything here is so delicious that they are known to frequently sell out!

I'm writing this as I stuff my face with donuts. After reading the reviews my boyfriend and I woke ourselves at 7AM and took a drive. Firstly, I can smell the the fresh donuts 15 feet away exiting the vehicle. I've NEVER experienced that before. I imagine that's what my heaven should smell like. Secondly, upon entering the layout-- while small is very lovely. Molasses glaze-color walls, some anime 'thank you' drawings, and of course freshly baked donuts!! Thirdly, the family that owns this establishment got it right: the wife makes the donuts and places them on display as we ordered and the husband takes and prepares the orders with all of his friendliness and charm. Did I mention it's AFFORDABLE? $3.50 for 3 donuts and $2 latte. Can't go wrong in a city that gouges people's wallets for the hell of it. Texture: My cruller was crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and tasted sweetly sinful. Every donut features different areas of light crunch paired with a melt-in-your-mouth softness. What kept coming to mind was the perfect oversized funnel cake. Don't hesitate. Just go.

These donuts are perfect. If you love light, airy donuts, this is your place. Big variety, the lady who works here is super nice, and this place is super affordable. The only dangerous thing is you are bound to come home with a bunch of donuts and eat way too many. You won't be disappointed!

Thank you fellow Yelpers for finding this gem! I have to say that I am a donut traditionalist. Give me a good old fashioned ring with powdered sugar and I am a happy camper. Today I stopped in for 6 donuts. Chocolate cake, glazed, powdered, bacon maple, plain crueller, and bear claw. They were all fresh, fluffy, and delicious. I was surprised by the bacon maple bar. I didn't think I would like it but it is delicious!!! Their cake donut was light and moist. Just like a cake! I know all you Seattleites out there think Top Pot is the best donut. But it's just because you haven't been here yet! Also, a box of day old donuts is $4! Looks like there are about 8-10 donuts in the box!

I needed some sweet treats to take back home to Chicago. This shop has easy off/on access to I5 so our stop on the way to the airport was fast and easy. The parking lot had ample parking with easy access. The store is at the east end of the strip mall and could be missed. I was in and out of the store in under two minutes and that's a big plus in my book. The place is clean, has a small number of tables for those wishing to gobble down a fritter before heading home to share the wealth of treats, and there were plenty of employees at 7am on a Friday to help the number of commuting customers on the way to work. All pluses. My one and only issue is the lack of descriptions on all but the Maple Bacon Long John. As an out-of-towner I assumed some more popular varieties and was back out the door. Had there been names on each one I'm sure I'd have grabbed a few more to try back home or on the airplane but didn't want to chance something not turning out to be not what I expected. On my tight schedule and quick customer flow it just didn't make sense to start asking about the ten or so unusual looking donuts and wasting additional time. Otherwise a perfect experience and they were still super fresh and flavorful after a couple thousand miles and almost 12 hours of driving, flights, waiting, and more driving to get back home to Chicago. Good experience.

Probably the best donut I've ever had. They have the holy grail of donuts: white cake with vanilla frosting and peanuts. The donut is cooked to perfection; a little crisp on the outside and still moist inside. The frosting is not too sweet. And the peanuts are fresh. Extremely reasonable prices for Seattle. Very friendly counter help. Decent parking available in the strip mall lot. Outstanding value. I'll be back.

Family Donut is still my favorite donut place. Every donut is perfect from the maple bar to the classic cake donut. I'm a simple girl and tend to stick to the cake donut. That plus a cup of coffee and I am very happy. The owner is always very nice and he remembers you even when it's been awhile. I'd pick Family Donut over Top Pot or Mighty-O any day (and I do)! A mixed dozen is now $10.99 including tax.

Always friendly service. Donuts are consistently big and tasty. I usually get a glazed cinnamon twist, apple fritter, or a raspberry jelly filled. I'm never disappointed. Haven't had the cake doughnuts (I'm more of raised doughnut type dude) but they look tasty.

  • Kate B.

The donuts here taste fresh and homemade. The interior of the shop is a typical run-of-the-mill donut shop in a dated strip center. But who cares! You're not there to linger and stay- you're there to get in, get donuts, and leave! I got a few donuts and a maple-bacon bar. The donuts I did get to taste were delicious, especially the orange-icing covered donut. You could tell the icing was homemade because it had a really authentic orange flavor. The maple bacon bar was delightful, and something I will definitely order again. It is a regular maple bar with tons of bacon sprinkled on top. The maple icing was sweet but had a very distinct maple richness, which perfectly complimented the smokey and salty bacon. I loved it. They were easily the best donuts I've had in Seattle, and probably the best donuts I've had in my life. They are worth going out of the way. I will certainly be back.

I'm not a fan of donuts but my friend Chelsea J. is so we stopped by here. I had a bite of the glazed -- I'm boring -- and enjoyed the pillowy texture. My friend had the cake donut, the bear claw, the crueller, the bacon maple, and 3 more I can't remember. She loved it so much, she ate all of it! If that isn't worth five stars, I don't know what is!

    (5)
  • Sean C.

It's a donut shop in a strip mall. It was also one of the best apple fritters I have ever had. My kids loved their donuts, too. The fellow behind the counter was super-friendly, and made a simple donut shop visit a fun experience. We'll be back!

  • Scott D.

suppose you wake up one morning with a hankering to say: "this is THE best ____ doughnut I've EVER had" Depending on your appetite and willingness to punish your own body you could say this a dozen times while visiting Family Doughnut.... I sampled four of their doughnuts today and I've never had a finer example of any of them. In fact, my partner had a chocolate cake doughnut with nuts on it, something I would normally turn my nose up and it was down right humbling in its balance of amazing flavor and delicate texture. forget those glitzy doughnuteers expanding throughout the Seattle region.. This is the real deal.

Best secret in Seattle! Better than top pot and way more affordable. Maple bars, old fashioned, crullers, and some fun flavors too. .. orange, maple bacon bars, lemon, etc. My son loves this place! The owners are super friendly and always give my son a donut hole while we are waiting! Love this place!

  • Clover A.

I am completely in agreement with Chelsea, these are the best 'standard' donuts I've had in the area as well. DAMN GOOD. I didn't get any crullers-they were out by the time I came by in the afternoon-but every single other donut was stellar quality. These are no grocery store donuts, bub, but the price is very much closer to that than the fancy donut shops in town. You won't find tricky flavors, fancy napkins or other stuff here, but you'll find the donut of your dreams if you're just looking for delicious, not too heavy, perfectly baked nuggets of frosted goodness. And who isn't looking for that, right?

When I moved into the area a few months back, I knew I was going to have a problem on my hands by being located near a donut shop. Next to water and oxygen, donuts are my favorite thing to consume. At first, I was a bit hesitant to actually go to Family Donut as it is located in a questionable little strip-mall. How questionable? Not questionable enough to have to worry about getting stabbed, but just questionable enough to wonder if there is a chance you could get stabbed. Having to get up super early to walk to the bus for work, I spent about two weeks walking past Family Donut without going inside. Finally, I broke down and decided to try it out one morning after reading the extensively high praising reviews of the place here on Yelp. That was the day when I first saw the light. Upon entering, I found myself jettisoned back to a bygone era. Draped in an atmosphere that hasn't probably changed since Nixon was in office, this tiny shop was everything a donut lover could ask for. The giant display case that rests proudly inside called to me like a lighthouse calls a ship on a foggy day. In the distance, I'm sure I could hear the sound of angels playing trumpets from on high as I walked past the few small tables and seats they have inside. The kindly owner who stood behind the case asked for what I would like. Dumbfounded, nay, lost in the endless choices and varieties that I was presented with, I decided to stay simple and get a maple bar and two standard glazed. Handing me a small bag with my donuts, the owner told me that it would by $3.50. Stunned to see such a reasonable price in a city for which knows nothing more than price gouging, I handed him the $3.50 and walked out of the shop. As I exited, I wondered to myself if it was possible that I could I have been tricked by the fresh smell of these pastries that danced on my senses like some baked Siren's song. Taking the maple bar out of the bag, I bit into it and time in itself seemed to vanish. There was nothing left in the world and I knew that everything I held to be true about donuts was a lie. This donut was fantastic. So overcome by joy, I walked up to the next person on the street, hugged them tightly and whispered gently in their ear that everything was going to be ok and life had amazing things to offer them. Needless to say, I have been back countless times and not once been disappointed. These donuts are the best in Seattle. They make Top Pot look like the kid in your class that would eat paste in the corner. It boggles my mind that the quality of these donuts are so exponentially higher than the price they are sold for. It doesn't surprise me at all that getting in early to buy some is almost a requirement. The places sells out of them super quick, so if you do go, plan on going before 9:00 am. This place is perfect and well worth going off the beaten path to try if you are a donut lover or anyone who likes to get their om nom nom on.

I've had Maple Bacon donuts all over the US. This place has the best I've had. Perfect ratio of bacon crumbs (tons) and the maple glaze isn't too sweet. I always take a few back to Hawai'i for my wife. Price is cheap, owners are very nice, and coffee is great.
