Favorite neighborhood bar! Cheap drinks, great food (happy hour is where it's at) and plenty of room. The bartenders are always chill it usually only gets packed on the weekends.

Reasonably priced (much better than just across the street) but comes with other costs. This place is also a bit more divey than the Montana bar across the street but the air flow and temperature of the place is much better due to architecture and space. It felt "clicky" during my visit here. Many regulars that know the bartender (maybe they were staff) but there is an easy hierarchy of service. So if you want to be in with the good here, go often but other than that, it slides on the scale of suck if you're a newbie. The service is rude so be very nice and they will come around. Kind of rough and straight forward in a way, if they were looking for a dive bar theme, they have got it down on service. Billiard table is available and fun to play around since they have a dedicated space in which you're not bumping up on other customers which is pretty rare in the seattle bar scene (due to space constraints). Food quality is not that great but above bar quality average. if you're in line for drinks, be patient while regulars cut in front of you. What you see is what you get at this bar, I wish I could give it more stars as I love dive themed bars. It is misleading as the sign seems fancier than the inside of this place and located on a corner lot. A-OK in my book even with the bad service just because of value in price and neat atmosphere.

We ordered a hamburger with fries and fish & chips. Both meals were disgusting. Waste of money and I won't be surprised if we get food poisoning. I didn't finish it nor did my husband. Delivery driver didn't even come to the door in spite of the call box instructions. He asked us to come down. Yuck!

The food is TERRIBLE. Arrives SOGGY and BELOW ROOM TEMP and UTTERLY INEDIBLE. I was so disappointed because in the past I ordered food here and it would be fresh and hot. Now it arrives as a soggy disgusting inedible mess.

So the Dunnes is a dump, this is true. But on the upside you can always find a place to sit, grab a cheap ass drink, scarf down some surprisingly good cheese curds and more often than not someone has loaded the juke box with 90's hip hop. Also a plus that most of the bartenders are super cool. Great place to shed the shackles of the normal Capitol Hill pretentiousness and just drink. Side note - pretty raucous place to catch a Seahawks game.

This is a go to place for my coworkers and I. Happy hour ends at 6 and we usually have a few drinks and appetizers by then. Cheap drinks and food and it can usually fit 6-8 of us with no wait around 4:30-5. Nothing too special about the food or drinks, just a good place to bs/vent about work lol

Go to place for me. Great food. Great beer. Pool table, darts. People are pretty cool here! Great location. I heard they have a trivia tuesday I think.

This place recently opened up near my office so I had to try it out. They've got a decent happy hour (with both drink and food specials) that goes until 7pm (so it's perfect for people who don't start HH right at 4-5pm). Here's my thoughts: Their irish nachos ($8 on HH) were pretty good -- corned beef on potato chips -- and perfect for sharing. Also, I don't remember drinks being weirdly expensive either. The "bar" definitely feels a lot more like a restaurant -- I remember thinking the venue was too well lit for being an Irish Pub but it's not a deal breaker. Would be interested to see how it fares on the weekends. I'll be back because the service has been solid and it's so conveniently located for me. It's a good spot for a low key hangout. I also like this spot because it seems like they would treat "regulars" well -- I love "neighborhood bars" and this definitely feels like one. PS I've been there for lunch as well. The "side salad" (a $2 up charge if you get an entree) is much larger than a normal side salad (so good bang for your buck). I would order that again. Their mac n' cheese, on the other hand, I would not recommend unfortunately. I think the corn beef, mixed with the ale cheese sauce (or whatever it was) was not the best combination.

my favorite bar on capital hill. I love almost everyone on staff! friendly witty and kind they only cut me off when I deserve it! great burgers and wings!

  • Katy H.

Average spot. With so many better options in the area, I pass this place a lot. It's a fun bar if you're into Irish pubs. Especially on St Paddys Day. Fun trivia nights as well. I hate to sound negative though, this is a cozy, large bar. There are tons of regulars and I have a few friends that frequent this spot a lot. So don't pass it up with at least checking it out. Just don't expect anything too fancy or too quiet. It's a great, low key hangout.

My one and only experience at this place included a very, very drunk acquaintance being served a ridiculous amount of booze. I was appalled by the copious amounts of liquor that was served to this woman even though I (and another member of our group) clearly told the bartender that she should be cut off. We stopped ordering drinks for ourselves and started trying to contain the drunken one to wrangle her home. I ended up grabbing a cab home before things got completely out of hand, leaving her in the bar with another friend who lived close and planned to share a cab with her. Apparently, the bar continued to serve this inebriated woman. Our friend got her home but was told by the bartender that this is a regular occurrence at that establishment with this woman. It seems like an irresponsible way to run a business. I've never been back to the bar and never been out with that acquaintance again. Once was enough, thank you very much.

I've lived around the corner for about three years but didn't visit until recently. I stopped in a couple weeks ago with some out-of-town friends. We were looking for a place that served food and booze on Olive Way, and Clever Dunnes fit the bill. I had a fish sandwich and some fries, which were good. My favorite part was sitting in the corner, looking out the window down Olive Way. Pretty cool view on a Friday night.

One of the better Irish pubs around. Clever Dunne's has an authentic atmosphere and a laid back vibe. Lots come here to eat - we only enjoyed a few beers before heading on our way. This is a good place to avoid huge lines on the weekends.

  • Ksenia C.

Service by bartender was quick and friendly. They seemed to be more on the expensive side but great atmosphere. We sat right by the big window and got a great breeze. It was awesome since it was a hot day. Definitely some bar games there, bit didn't play any

  • Elyse L.

Nope. My friend and I came here for the first time to meet up with some friends on a Saturday night. The beer selection was decent and prices were fine, but the last 15 minutes of the night is where Clever Dunne's lost me. Our other friends left around 1AM and my friend and I spent the next 45 minutes sipping our beers and chatting. The place was mostly empty. The overhead lights came on a bit earlier than I expected and I looked at my phone - it was only 1:45 AM. Not two minutes later, a bouncer comes over and tells us flat out to finish our drinks immediately. He wasted no time jumping to, "Do you guys have tabs? Settle them... now." I'm sorry, but being rude to some quiet patrons 15 minutes prior to closing time does not win you customers. I'll never be back, especially considering I realized after getting up to the bar that the wall clock is intentionally set 10 or 15 minutes ahead. Clever Dunne's, try not to be such jerks to your clientele and you might actually have more people willing to spend their money on your drinks.

  • Paul F.

Clever Dunne's is a special place. It's the place that I first choose when I just want to get out of the house (or, in my case, very small apartment) and have a beer or two and just relax. Most every time I go, I find interesting conversation, and, if I'm more in the mood to just zone and watch whatever game is on, that's fine too. All of my friends that I have brought here love the place too. It's a real neighborhood bar, for those of us, from all walks of life, who live around here. Treat the bartenders (who are all awesome) with respect and they will return the favor. Love this joint! Oh, and the food is quite good. Fish and chips are actually some of the best I've had in Seattle.

    (5)
  • Shannon H.

So-so service. Good beer. Decent booths with plenty of seating. Pretty divey, bathrooms are very primitive and small. We saw Hulk Hogan and The Joker though. And a guy actually got thrown out by his shirt collar after starting a fight and breaking a glass, so that was entertaining.

    (3)
  • Kate S.

Hey! It's a bar. Sort of strangley spaced, with lots of booze and tv's sort of bar. I somehow got finagled into coming here for a Seahawks game -- and even though sports aren't usually my thing I had a good time here. Drank beers. Hooted and Hollered. You know how it goes. I may like this place more than I should because they have a painting of Father Ted on the wall. Oh, and they play Adventure Time episodes apparently late night before last call. Now that's cool.

    (3)
  • Alice C.

Average, A OK place. Solid, not quite a dive, but pretty close. It doesn't really stand out amongst some of the very overdone bars in Capitol Hill, but that isn't a bad thing. Nice space to hang out, have a couple beers, watch a game, read (yeah, I read in bars after work, don't judge me), and people watch from the large windows. Bartenders pour a heavy handed drink if you order hard A.

    (3)
  • Big Brownie H.

Its a great place. Especially Rachelle. She always asked for my ID. Even though I look like I'm 45 (I'm 34...swear). She is friendly, professional, and super-cute! I love on Sundays when she works nights. She really gets into whatever game Tim Tebow is playing. I also think he is hot, so we have that in common. The other bartenders are dope too, if you like the buff, hipster types (which I do). Cheap drinks...really cool chicks...some dude with a mohawk that works for Nintendo always buying me a "Cherry Bomb". Really can't say enough good things about this place. Oh, and a special-ed teacher that is ADORABLE. I think his name is Bill. Or Will. Whateves. If you wanna meet nerdy hot chicks and hunky video game programmers or hipster teachers...this is the place for you. Word!!!

  • BR S.

Spacious bar, good drinks, local sports. They have a pool table and real darts too. What makes it 4 stars is the food, it's seriously some of of the best bar food I've had. The ranch hand burger and the bacon Bleu cheese were especially good.

  • Anna W.

An Irish pub is an Irish pub is an Irish pub. They have a few good beers on tap (Ninkasi, Three Skulls, etc.) for those of us who don't default to Guinness or PBR, but all the points gained by the tap list are immediately negated by the clientele. I guess if you serve Jaeger bombs, the bros and hos will come, no matter what neighbourhood you're in. Next time, I'll just wait it out for a seat at the Stumbling Monk. Or pretty much anywhere else.

    (2)
  • Sarah B.

What a way to waste the evening away! This pub definitely has the feeling of being around for awhile and filled with regulars. And it makes it a very nice place to gather with friends. I love the big open windows with fresh air. Well fresh unless people are smoking. But in between those periods, it's great. And it's great for people watching. The beer was cold and kept coming. Though it makes you hungry. And as others have stated, thank god Taco Gringos is across the street. And yes, you can eat it in the pub. Apparently they let you order pizza too! One of the best things here is that they let you bring well mannered dogs. Which is just lovely. The bathrooms are downright scary though.

Out and about on Saturday night celebrating a birthday, we came across Clever Dunne's Irish House and stopped by for a drink. Pool Tables, Darts and lots of good places to sit made for a great atmosphere to hang out. The staff was nice and the drinks were great.

  • Lauren B.

Strong drinks and friendly bartenders. Sometimes they play shitty metal really loud, and then that sucks. But mainly it's just raucous fun times. There can be a bit of a wait for drinks but it's fun. A good place to come with a group of friends!

    (4)
  • Kate A.

Ugh, this place was such a disappointment! I just wanted a few beers and some decent pub snacks - but nooooo. The whole place seems really dive-y and dingy. I was really turned off by a woman who left her baby alone in a carrier several meters away while she gabbed at the bar. The bar service was slow - it took forever for two beers - and there is apparently no table service. Several people asked about food the first time I was there (several months ago) and the bartender eventually produced a small menu - but nothing worth eating. I'm not sure if they still serve food. They should advertise one way or the other because there is only so much beer drinking and game-playing/watching you can do on an empty stomach. This place would get an instant extra star and probably some repeat clientele by adding basic food and table service.

    (2)
  • Caitlyn P.

Good for groups, and not bad beer on tap. This is a dive bar, and I'm fine with the dingy, dark setting...but it SMELLS BAD. I really can't stand to be in the place because of the distinct smell of grease and the gross feeling I get when I go there. I don't really want to go back again...

    (2)
  • Kalbi K.

Good beer selection and lots of space. A bit divey. Will be back.

I went to Clever Dunnes last night to play trivia and "down" a few pints. I accomplished only one of those goals and it was not answering questions for prizes. The bar has a really strange design and it definitely pays for it. There is definitely not enough seating. Even for trivia night there were less than a dozen tables and only about 10 seats at the bar. Since I find it hard enough to stand and answer questions, I was not up for standing, drinking and answering questions. So, I settled for standing and drinking. On the plus side, the bartenders were really quick and attentive. I never had to ask for another drink and they were always checking-in. And that was quite often after the crazy that was my last weekend. I can't attest to the stiffness of the mixed drinks- since I drank Guinness- but the prices were pretty reasonable. I am not sure I would go back for trivia, but I might drop in for a pint if I am in Capitol HIll.

Let's look at my Clever Dunne's timeline... 1st visit: St. Patrick's Day 2008, absolutely PACKED. 2nd visit: Weekend night, as busy as anywhere else. 3rd visit: A failed attempt at beer & food with my dad. Clever Dunne's has beer but I've seen no indication that there is food, although I haven't asked. We saw no menu or kitchen or anything resembling food, so we went elsewhere. 4th visit: Saturday night, a girlfriend and I wanted a quick beer. CD's was mostly empty, save for a few other nice people at the bar. 5th visit: Around 5 or 6 in the evening, I had a beer with a friend. Inexpensive, not very busy, quiet enough to have a conversation. It's inexpensive enough and the employees seem nice. The bathroom is not so amazing, but if you can avoid it, you're good. It's a typical Irish pub, and it's right around the corner from my apartment, which is rather awesome, but in terms of the crowd, it's obviously pretty hit-or-miss.

-Great selection of drinks: Check -Pool tables: Check -Dart Board: Check -Feel good type of bar that's spacious, fun, affordable, and Irish themed: Check! Huge fan of this place because the bartenders are good, my friends and I always manage to score play

  • Alison V.

I love grabbing a beer here. They are dog friendly and the bartenders are always super nice. When it's warm outside the big windows are great to sit by. The bar, right now, has kind of shady bathrooms and such but the last time I was in here (recently) they said they'd be closing for a full remodel. I look forward to seeing it once it's all redone!

    (4)
  • Dean H.

I call this place "the straight bar outpost on the hill". A friendly place to go with the straight folk. Nothing special other than huddled masses of straight people on gay island. It's also fun during sporting events as they have the games on.

    (2)
  • Rachael H.

Amazing. So laid back. If your an asshole looking for somewhere to go, don't bother because the bartenders are not having it. Staff are good peeps, and the regulars are awesome. Trivia night on Tuesday is also crucial. Fernando is amazing, and also makes an impeccable dirty martini... just saying.

What a strange and interesting mix of people! I would come here strictly to people watch on a busy night. I came here with some fellow yelpers (shout out to Krystin T.) for a little St. Patty's Day celebration and as expected, it was PACKED. The atmosphere was fun, the drinks were cheap, ($5 for beer, $2 jello shots) and while I got beer dropped on me a few times and checked by an unusually large girl, I still managed to have a good time. By the time I left, I really had to pee but decided against it after having read some of the reviews about the bathroom. The bar itself was a little dirty, but it's a good dive bar if you're just looking for some cheap drinks and a fun vibe. I have a weakness for Irish Pubs...so I liked it. Minus one star because it was a little dirty, minus one star because it was so damn packed. I like a good crowd on celebration nights...but there was literally no room.

    (3)
  • Sara J.

Clever Dunne's is somewhat of a dive-bar, but is great for a large group of people because of abundant space. There's pool to play, and lots of tables to sit at. Unfortunately, the bathrooms are poorly taken care of. Beer selection is ok, but prices are great. Overall, an average place to go for an average night.

    (2)
  • J K.

Ick. For some reason I always get an icky feeling at Irish pubs and Clever Dunnes is no exception to this rule. I think I'm a little Irish, so I can say that? Perhaps all the customers are nice but they don't look nice -- maybe I'm too judgmental. See what happens when I go to an Irish pub? I get all judgmental and then I get all self-critical of my judgmental-ness and then I second guess my yelp reviews.

    (1)
  • Jessica R.

Go here because the beers on tap are cheap and the Tuesday trivia night is awesome. If you can have that mentality and nothing else...I think you'll enjoy this place.

    (4)
  • Kat F.

I came. I drank. I left. Decent tap selection, big windows open to the evening air, plain-jane wooden tables and a friendly bartender. It doesn't get more simple than that.

    (3)
  • Sarah S.

Poop, pee, and puke. That's what this place smells like. Oddly enough, the bathrooms are the least stinky place in the whole bar, but they have their own set of issues (women's stalls don't close, toilet almost doesn't flush, trash on the floor, etc). This bar needs a bath.

    (1)
  • Anthony A.

My only complaint with CD is their food. It's run of the mill and lacks any even semi-healthy options. That being said, the staff is terrific and this is a fun neighborhood tavern with tons of regulars.

    (3)
  • Annie L.

Oh, boy. I haven't update this bad boy in a long time. I live pretty close to Clever Dunnes, and I frequent the joint when I am looking to fulfill one or all of the following: - Drinking booze with my dog (yes, dogs are allowed! nothing is better than toasting with your pooch!) - Trivia Night. I don't think this needs an explanation. Tuesday, Trivia, Beer, and Hector Herrera...amen. The only downfall is they don't serve food, but you can always walk across the street to Taco Gringos for munchies then head back to the bar if needed. See, there's a solution for everything! (disclaimer: The $$ price range is based on my spending of booze...really should be a $$$ (judge me). But really, you can get by spending only $.

    (3)
  • Becca C.

50 cents for a game of pool. No food, which is a downer. I'm not big on beer to begin with, and it seems really dark in there. I don't like the bar layout. I would write a more coherent review if I really liked the place, but I don't. This is more of a stream-of-conciousness review.

    (2)
  • Riss J.

Before Adam C's bday at the kurrent, Jake and I stopped by to catch the UFC fights and do some pre-funking. The layout of this place feels a little odd at first, but after careful consideration, I like it. The pool, darts and full size shuffleboard are all separated from the 'throngs' of the TV and bar area and each other. On a crowded night, that could mean the difference between the 8 ball in the corner pocket and a dart in the eye. Overall though, it's just your typical Irish pub anywhere in the city. Dark wood, standard beer selections, standard decor, not a whole lot of effort. Just what you need to get by and 'barely pass'. The bartendress had a bit of an attitude. In the "I wore lingerie as a shirt, as the only female in a bar full of young guys watching fighting causing a rampant increase in the testosterone levels in the area, so I will cop an attitude to show I am tough and don't want the attention i am going to get from wearing this top, even though I really do want the attention" kind of way. It was a good time, though, and I'm sure for any other reason I may have to saunter in to this bar with all the choices in the area, I'd have fun then too. The ladies room was oddly one of the worst I've been to in the city...that is saying something. Ok, maybe Joe's was worse, but not by much. For food, I'm assuming it's "carry in is ok" like many other bars in the city. I saw take out boxes being brought in by patrons and no indication that they serve it here.

  • Will L.

I'm struggling on how to rate this place. If I were a local, I think I'd fricken love it. Pool, darts, tvs around, and a couple friendly locals willing to clink my glass after I told a particularly juicy joke. (It was about juice). However, I walk in here occasionally to cap off the night before filling myself full of tacos across the street at Tacos Gringos, which is also known as "The Greatest Place Ever-os" and I've run into that 'you're not one of us' weirdness a couple times. And it's not like I'm not a social guy. But I usually don't have to work so hard.

    (3)
  • Elise D.

Stop #5 on the E Olive Way Crawl. It was ok. Weird thing was it was almost completely empty on Sat night yet it still took forever to get a beer at the bar. I like beer though so I was happy enough for the short time we were there. The olympics were on and that was about it. Snore-fest. I might come back for St. Paddy's day or something... but if I don't I'll be fine with that too.

They DO have food now. It is inexpensive & seems to be a hit! Still going for trivia, those guys are obnoxious but they have grown on me. :)

  • jeff M.

I am a noobie here but I like what I have experienced so far. I love the huge open windows to get some air but still have a nice spot to people watch. Booze is cheap with a nice selection to choose from. I have no idea about the food, but with tacos gringos across the street there is food near by. I see others with bigger shots so I hope one day I can join that club lol.

I went here for happy hour as part of my quest to visit every Irish pub in Seattle. Turned out to be a great laid-back spot. Its definitely on the divey side, but in this case that just added to the atmosphere. You never know what you are going to get on Capital Hill, but this place was great, a few old timers drinking, few other people shooting darts. A very nice and low key spot with a great neighborhood pub feel. The staff was friendly, the beer selection was reasonable, they have Newcastle on tap, which is a huge plus for me. The food is just your standard bar fare, but reasonably good. If you are looking for a nice relaxing place to go for a beer, check this place out.

If you don't want to read the whole review, here's an easy summary: Good Folks. Good Booze. Good Pricing. I Got Drunk. Five Stars. Ok. I did a joke review of this place, and it was meant to poke fun at any rating you see under a FIVE on here. For the record---IT WAS FUNNY. AND I AM STANDING BY THAT. However, it seems time to actually review the place. This is not The Taphouse, or PF Changs. This is not Neighbours. It is not Kells or FADO. It is Clever Dunnes. Come on in, don't be a dick, and watch how the people in this bar (staff and patrons) will instantly become part of your life. There is literally NEVER a night where you cannot stop in and have a drink and an interesting conversation. You'll hear some good jokes, and you will meet a WIDE array of people that live and breathe and work in that neighborhood. There is also NEVER a time that you cannot find a spot during the day to sit near a window and people watch while having a snack. Is the food perfect? No. Like I said, it's a bar. And as far as bar food goes, the staff knows how to make a mean French Dip, a just right burger, and some awesome wings. Plus for someone who does not eat fries, the things are like crack. So don't come expecting some Gluten-Free Asian Fusion. It's a goshdarn bar with good bar food. And yes, it has an Irish name, and yes, they love Irish culture, but its a different take. This is a "pub" in the true tradition of the word. It's a "Public House". There is not a better bar in Seattle on the Hill to say "Hey, let's get a drink before we head down to the movie." No matter where on the hill you live, it's easy to get to. There are literally two buses that drop off right in front of the place. Big event happening like the Super Bowl or a Presidential Debate, they are watching and people from all walks of life are there. And it is a fixture in the neighborhood. Go down to the wonderful Crescent and sing your heart out and then come back up and celebrate your bravery in singing with a shot made by one of the expert bartenders. Like Tacos? The place across the street makes the best tacos in town. When you get to the taco place and see a sign that says back in 5, where are they? At the Dunnes. Because that's how they roll. It is a neighboor hood public meeting house. A pub. A bar. Watch sports? They got em. Watch weird movies with zombies? Odds are they are watching one. Don't like spending money on a jukebox? Well...they have one. But the staff's musical tastes are practically perfect. Except for the really attractive short bartender who likes country. But at least its good country. And as far as the staff, will you get some attitude? Damn straight. Don't be offended. I'm sure there are people who have gone there for years who still get attitude everytime they order a goddamned Vodka and Lemonade with Grenadine...what ever idiot would order such a girly drink deserves the abuse I guess. But I can guarantee you will never be underpoured or underappreciated if you appreciate them. Basicially this review is not for someone looking for the "trendy" new spot. This is for the person who just moved onto the Hill, or someone who works on the Hill, and wants to know where to go to meet people and have a good time. If you want a "Cheers" like atmosphere, this bar does it better than any other. Come on in, and soon everyone will know your name. And that's a good feeling in a city and world where every one is broken down into 140 characters or less. They have way more characters than that.

It's a great local pub, with friendly regulars and bartenders. Tuesday night trivia is still good, but there seem to be more competitive strangers there these days (No, I am not going to refrain from texting or emailing anyone for the night, but I am not looking up answers either, WTF nosy girl?) Wouldn't go out of my way for it but if you live near here and need a local, it's a good choice.

Good beers on tap, and a heavy hand when pouring cocktails. My kind of place. Love the storm windows overlooking Olive. When I was there the windows were all wide open on warm, if not overcast, day.

  • Jeff S.

Pretty average Irish pub. Nothing too special. Everyone was nice, the have pool, darts and shuffleboard which is great. Bathrooms are pretty gross but that's to be expected. Overall a good place to stop in for a quick pint but I don't see it as a place to meet up with a bunch of friends. Oh and they do have some TV's if you are into sports.

This isn't normally the type of bar I hang out at, but have ended up here several times while on the Hill. Comfortable, relaxed bar, kind of a bro hang out, but great food, beer, and a great place to watch a Sounders game.

I'm downtown, it's late and I just missed the bus and have a half-hour wait. I usually decide to walk up the hill and by the time I get to Clever Dunnes a beer sounds really good. I've been to Clever Dunnes three or four times and that's pretty much how every scenario has played out. It's a fine spot for a drink with a good location.

Clever Dunnes is kind of dark and dirty. I'm glad I missed out on using the bathrooms pre-renovation. These people are really into customer service. Whilst chatting at the bar, I was fiddling with my ring and it fell off. Under any other circumstances, I would have given the area a once-over and given up. But literally 10 seconds after I started looking, 3 people, including the bartender, whipped out flashlights and scoured the entire place. He found it, and then proceeded to give me and my friends 2 shots. What?

I give Clever Dunnes a 3/5 stars. I've been a couple of times, and every time I've gone, even when it's not very crowded, the music is so damn loud, I have to yell to hear my friends. I mean, it's not a bad bar, I guess I just prefer the Redwood up the street... maybe it's just the general layout and the sound level of the music in the bar that I don't like. It just doesn't grab me and make me want to come back... but that seems to be the feeling of other reviewers (from what it seems) as well....

I've walked by Clever Dunnes on a number of occasions and have seen people reading by the window, so I was fairly surprised by the scene when I walked in at about 9:00 Saturday night. While there were a couple of people reading at the bar, the rest of the pub was rather loud. There was old school hip hop playing. Surprising, no? Overall, the pub seemed popular with a pretty diverse crowd (from hipsters to people dressed as pirates). Whether it was the pool table, darts, or strong drinks that drew them in, I'm not sure.

My friends and I stopped in here while looking for a bar to hang out at before a show at the Paramount. Super awesome. Cheap beer and all around super comfy place to hang out on a Thursday evening. Will definitely return!

This bar has all the things I like - beer and liquor. Oh, and pool, darts, decent music, sports of some sort on the television, and a laid back pub-like atmosphere. But those things are tangential; they have beer and liquor. This place generally has a pretty diverse crowd, and I've always found them friendly and outgoing. The bartenders are friendly as well, and they will pour a stiff drink for you (hell, they'll give you a free shot every now and then if you hang out there). As others have mentioned, they've remodeled the bathrooms nicely, and dogs are welcome. I'd probably hang out here a lot more often if it weren't for the 14 other bars I walk past on the way here...

Nice, comfortable place to grab a pint or two with friends. Darts are free, and a pitcher of Pabst is only $8 if you feel like going cheap.

Very friendly staff. Stiff shots good selection of beer. The atmosphere is very quiet in the daytime but gets louder as the nights progress often getting very busy and very loud. they have pool darts shuffleboard and plenty of seating + they do trivia on Tuesdays which is very fun for groups. stiff drinks + inexpensive = 5 stars

Aye, he be a clever one, that Dunne...or Dunnes. Whichev. Hey- I like this place. The bathrooms have been remodeled- apparently they were horrific. I'd never been in before, but one girl told me her heels used to go through the floorboards whenever she went to the "Jane". It's not too crowded, they've got pool, and they make some stiff drinks. See! Those Irish do know something about getting drunk. And also about bathroom remodels, apparently. Two newly renovated Johns way up!

I was initially averse to this place, given the patently stupid name. In fact, it might be the name that keeps me from giving it the full 5 stars. The truth is, this place is great for meeting a medium-large group of friends. Unlike previous reviewers, I didn't find the music too loud, so it was decent for a little conversation. More importantly, though, the drinks were strong and relatively inexpensive. I don't recall exactly what I ordered, but two up-level drinks (i.e. bacardi & coke) worked out to $10 after tax, and seemed like double pours to me. In the scheme of capitol hill bars, that's pretty darn good. I'm not usually into the Irish bar thing, but this place has a better drink selection and the music was not the same old modern hip hop one hears everywhere else. Check it out!

If you really want to go to a place that caters to the tourism industry in Seattle, Clever Dunnes is not for you. If you are looking for a fun place to go on Capitol Hill, relax with your frineds and have good conversation with your friends, then you might want to give it a try. Clever's has a pretty steady following of regulars that are always friendly to new people joining the crowd. The bartenders and staff are great, but be warned, they will not put up with rudeness and shennanigans. They have recently have added a small food menu. I definetly recommend Clevers for people new to Capitol Hill looking for a regular drinking hole but if you are out on the town and just want to be seen, you may want to pass.

Tuesday night trivia here is really fun. With each team trying to best each other with really inappropriate but hilarious names. The two revs serve up a mean trivia game. You think you know...but you don't even know. I like the bartenders who get to know you if you frequent enough. Lots of people make this their regular hang out. And it makes sense. Really comfortable, non-pretentious, normal and not so normal people here. Even dogs are welcome. Which is pretty cool.

If your looking for a great place to hang out with friends or the regulars this is the place to be. The bar tenders are great once you come in a couple of times they will remember your name and your drink.

Typical Irish Pub. I was NOT surprised when I heard Flogging Molly as I walked in. They have darts and a pool table (which I both suck at, so I tend not to embarass myself anymore than I usually do by playing either). But, I'm sure that's a bonus for some people that are into that sort of thing. Honestly, I probably wouldn't go here, if it wasn't for this one thing. This one glorious, glorious thing.... THEY HAVE STRONGBOW ON TAP!!!! It probably isn't a big deal to most people. But, it sure is to me. Also, I probably shouldn't share this information, but I will anyway....I once ordered 2 Strongbows and 3 shots and was charged well under $10 for it. Not sure if they made a mistake or the bartender thought I was cute or something. But, hey, cheap/free drinks = loyal customer!

I've been actively boycotting this place for a while now because of its bathrooms. My friends say am being a whimp, but then I point out to them that I've used public bathrooms in countries ranging from Jamaica to Bangkok. That I've used porta-potties at Burningman for a week straight, three years in a row. That I have no problem with outhouses, or peeing in an alley even. But, literally, their bathrooms are the worst ever. And, in the three years I've lived in the neighborhood, they've only gotten progressively worse. Which is sad, because otherwise its not a bad bar.

Dunnes does what it does pretty well. It's an Irish Pub, catered to locals, located very conveniently for those of us in the area. It isn't exactly a place to "see and be seen" but I've always had a good time there. It gets semi-crowded but not to the point of actually feeling crowded. Plus, I think that shuffleboard could be one of the most entertaining drunken activities there is. I've only ever been on Friday or Saturday nights so I'm not sure what it's like during the week. The weekends do get a mixed crowd from my experience. The atmosphere is genuinely down-to-earth and relaxed, which is a nice change of pace from other bar scenes. I have noticed that they do last call pretty damn early, even for Seattle standards. Thankfully, there's usually a hot dog cart somewhere down Olive which is an adequate pit stop after Dunnes kicks you out.

I am puzzled by the layout of this bar and I wouldn't go without friends, but it's centrally-located and easy to find, so it makes a good prefunk location. One night when lacking in large bills I asked for a Mike's, but they were out, so the bartender made me a sort of vodka lemonade in a pint glass and only charged beer price. Which makes me lean towards friendly. Trivia night is excessively long - four rounds and two "matching" bonuses - but the cash prizes make it seem more worthwhile.

Better place once the smoking ban came about (and I even used to be a smoker). It used to be stifling to go in there, but now it's pretty chill and relaxed. Bartenders are generally friendly, drinks are fairly priced, good amount of taps (not a lot, but good selection). Had the food there once, don't bother. It's pretty basic and not worth it. The worst part of the place is the bathrooms. I know I shouldn't be judging a pub on the quality of the bathrooms, but it's pretty disgusting in the men's room. Door doesn't close, things dont work, place is covered in graffiti. If they're trying to emulate the "worst restroom" from Trainspotting, they're doing a decent job.

Great atmosphere for drinking with a group. The bartenders are charming and heavy-handed. Tuesday night is pub quiz with a couple of mouthy hosts and truly challenging questions. The bathrooms are sort of foul and the jukebox sucks but the bathrooms at least usually have toilet paper and the bartenders override the juke with iPods anyhow.

An authentic Irish emmigrant pub. Clever's is where I went for St. Patrick's day last year and I loved it! They have a great party atmosphere, nice stiff drinks, and very low prices. Drink specials on Fri. and Sat. nights tend to lure in a crowd of people and special events here are a blast!
