The corn beef hash was very very yummy. They have a very different twist on hash browns. They are tiny tiny little potato squares. Very tasty and very different. The French toast was very good because they seem to use homemade bread. The entrees also come with a thick homemade bread. Reminds me of something my grandmother would have made. The staff was very friendly and helpful when asking about the menu. It has very eclectic and kitschy decor and atmosphere. My only complaint is the music they were playing. I'm not a heavy metal kind of person especially when I'm eating out. It fits the restaurant but isn't very relaxing.

This cafe is a very nice physical space -- it seems like a nice place to have a coffee or beer, and it is a very good venue for shows. The food, though, from my experience, is not good. had a patty melt -- a hard to mess up dish -- but it was dry, over cooked, and not greasy enoght. In particular, the burger was way to we'll done and the onions were not sautéed far enough. in general, I would consider this a fairly nit-picky complaint, but I paid $10 for this burger, and this was not of a quality that justified the cost. A better burger could have been had at Dick's.

I don't have very much experience going to dive bars but Cafe Racer fits the bill. It's friendly, quirky, and quite inviting. It's also incredibly versatile--there is a bar, there's breakfast food, sandwiches and hotdogs, a little stage, wi-fi... You could come for a simple meal or to study or catch up or to even catch a small local show. I came to grab a quick lunch as a study break on a Saturday. I got the grilled cheese with sweet onion potato chips. No complaints about the food, but I'd probably have to try more menu items to be sure. Everything on the menu is pretty standard, and I don't see how you could go wrong with anything you order.

The first time I came to Cafe Racer was to see my girlfriend play violin with a big band of other musicians. It was a good experience-- the place was packed and overheated, but I loved the local/neighborhood feel and live music is a great thing to offer with their space. I came back recently for breakfast (it was past noon, but that counts, right?) and was immediately impressed with the service. The bartender/waitress was friendly, prompt, and super attentive. We had the corned beef hash and french toast plates, which both come with potatoes o'brien. I had bacon that came out crisp even though I didn't ask for it (yay!) and the french toast was teeny baguette slices piled high and covered with powdered sugar. The hash looked great, too, and the eggs were cooked to order. I wished my potatoes were a little warmer than room temperature, but even that didn't ruin my meal. We left very happy. Great little place! The upstairs is pretty cool, too-- check it out. That's where the bathrooms are. ;)

Really great food for a good price. Had breakfast here couple days ago. The omelet was amazing, In fact it was so good that I didn't know it was vegan until I was told a block down the street. Great place for a bite to eat.

There are cool divey places and then there are just dives. I rarely give bad reviews but really don't waste your time here, there are many other good places to go. Dirty, uncomfortable, cramped, got our order wrong, hair in the food, food had no flavor anyway... Just..... Don't.

The french toast was good but I had to wait over an hour to get it! Ridiculous, considering the cafe was not busy at all. The waitstaff aren't all that friendly and checked on us once, near the end of the hour wait, to tell us the food was coming. Good thing I wasn't in a hurry or had somewhere to be. Wouldn't come back with a wait time like that for average food.

Cafe Racer makes me feel right at home. I can bring my dog, have breakfast at 2 in the afternoon, do my work using their wi-fi, and spend the rest of the afternoon bullshitting with the locals over a Bloody Mary. The food is comforting and the ambiance is casual.

slow, took over 30 mins for a to-go order, I won't recommend this place to anyone, nor will I go to the place again in the future.

Delicious! I had The Breakfast Sandwich on an everything bagel and it passed my expectations! It tasted great and was quite filling. My boyfriend had the Corned Beef Hash and that was just as good. He never finished his food but it was so good that he cleared the plate, to my surprise. The service was great; our waitress was nice and checked in on us once we got our food to see if everything was okay. The entire place was very unique, with different paintings and decorations everything. That place had some sass. The only downfall of my first experience here was that the coffee was gross. It was equivalent to instant coffee, so I just masked it with cream and sugar. Besides that, 5/5! I don't know about the other things, but I know for sure that I can come back and order The Breakfast Sandwich and be happy with it.

We wanted to get some food, hang out, and get some work done (WiFi) This place is kitschy, divey, and inviting. I ordered the East Coaster, a reuben styled turkey sandwich. Not a huge meal or impressive meal, but it was good with their home-made bread. My friend ordered the tater tots and chili. The tots were underdone. The atmosphere here, thought divey, is great. The place has a University District, Seattle vibe. The staff was terrific. Be sure to venture deeper into the place, the back room is cozy and might be fun for a group wanting to get some drinks and play a game.

This place is pretty dingy.. The coffee had a little bug in it, the cup had a ball of dust stuck to the bottom, I found little hairs on my plate, and things were just dirty. Our waitress was very rude but the one serving the other tables was very nice. I did not like the breakfast burrito at all, but my boyfriend really liked the corned beef hash so I bumped it to 3 stars. It's nice that there are papers around to read but the vibe of the place is so-so. I wouldn't come back.

We came here 4th of July morning, first time we ate here we had our brunch outside, which was wonderful! If you like French toast I definitely recommend getting here best I have in Seattle! But we didn't realize they are not kid friendly, no high chairs which was a bummer, we made do though! Will be back just for the French toast!

Tried to go there for brunch on a week day around noon. Literally we were the only two people other than the three employees having a conversation at the bar. The lady behind the bar gave us menus and we sat ourselves. Ten minutes go by. We decided what to order but the employees were too busy chatting with each other at the bar to take our order. When one of the three leaves he pops his head in and let's the other two know that someone "is coming so look busy". They say "what?" and he repeats himself and leaves. I thought maybe this would prompt them to "look busy" by actually helping their customers... But after another 5 minutes we simply left. Really too bad because I wanted to try the food. Instead we ended up going to sunlight Cafe down the street and in the time it took me to type this we were quickly seated. Got drinks and now my hot food is already in front of me. It's delicious and I'm not even a vegetarian.

I met here with a friend for breakfast. I had French toast which came with bacon and potatoes. The potatoes were bland, the bacon was decent, and the French toast was cute (little slices of baguette!) but ultimately weakly flavored, kind of dry, and honestly really boring. There was definitely a dark little hair baked into one of my slices of French toast, which was a turnoff. Their quirky art was fun to look at and talk about! The location is right next to Ravenna Park, which was great for an after-breakfast walk. Maybe there are other hidden gems in this little spot, but ultimately I won't be returning and wouldn't recommend it.

Terrible service. I went in to get a coffee on my way to work - I had ten minutes and my work was around the corner. The inside was dirty and made me feel awkward; it was impossible to tell the difference between customers and staff and the guy behind the counter was ignoring everyone. Finally a staff member - who I literally thought was a customer because they had been standing around not making eye contact with anyone - asked what I wanted, and I said I just wanted a 16oz latte. He relayed this to the barista who turned, glared at me, and snapped "latte? Sixteen ounce?" I nodded. He went back to the coffee machine. I stood there for two minutes while he watched a commercial on the tv before a girl who had been doing paperwork at the counter said "can I close out?" The barista then made HER a coffee and ran her card without acknowledging me at all even though I was standing right there. Then he started on my coffee, four minutes after I ordered it, when there was no line. He repeatedly stopped what he was doing to play YouTube videos on the overhead screen. I waited seven minutes in a place with no line to get a completely basic and average cup of coffee. There is no planet where it takes seven minutes to operate a commercial espresso machine. I was barely on time to work and got treated rudely in a nasty cafe serving alcohol at nine in the morning. I'm at least 99% certain that the barista was hung over. When I left, someone else was giving him a burrito order. I called "have a nice day" and he didn't even look up. EDIT: coffee had a load of gritty coffee grounds in the bottom that had the texture of rough, dry dirt. Auuuugh.

I came with my BF, and I didn't eat because I was headed to a dentist appointment, but my BF had a dry burrito and coffee. - We had a server who was done with us before we even walked in. - The place is dirty with ripped up seats. - Why is there a bar in the morning? Ugh. This place is way too close to Greenlake to be so shitty.

I used to really like this place, it's quirky and cool. The food is pretty good too and they have great live music. I hadn't been there in well over a year, and went to see a friend's band play recently. Now I remember why I never go there any more. I'd give it more stars if they get a bartender who understands the concept of customer service. Otherwise, why the hell am I spending money to be treated so shabbily? I'll probably never go back. People who behave like dicks should be working in the back, not serving customers.

The east coaster sandwich is cool! We just walked by and occasionally wanted to have brunch together. This place is really American and relaxed. Very friendly atmosphere and good bar area!

We just didn't have a good experience here. I ordered my breakfast burrito wet, but it came dry. When I pointed it out to the server, she didn't seem at all concerned, and brought me a cold dish of enchilada sauce from a can - and not until I was almost finished with my meal. The also managed to get my wife's order wrong :-( In addition, the table (and the place) was pretty dirty, and the service was pretty bad. It took forever to get waited on, for our meals to get corrected, and then to pay. To be honest, our server seemed more concerned with chatting with the regulars than in serving us our breakfast. I hate to give out less than 3 stars, and the food was OK (once we got it) so I may give it another try in the future. If so, I will update my review.

I have been here for breakfast and later in the evening, and both have been very pleasant experiences. Despite having a ton of character, it is a very relaxing place to hang out. Lots of charm, and half the fun is checking out the unique art, even the museum of bad art. The patrons are about as unique as the art, but that is what makes it fun. Yes, it is hard not to think about the tragedy that occured here, but I'm doing my best to put it out of my head, and just appreciate Cafe Racer for what it is. I took my 8 year-old daughter here for breakfast, and she thought it was the coolest, so there can be no higher praise.

First of all, I thought it was a coffee shop, not a bar. I was confused, but walked up to the bar and ordered an iced latte. The board said they had iced lattes. The other folks at the bar were having what looked like really good bloody Marys. Now that I have read the reviews, I may go back for a nice strong drink. The "latte" was arguably the worst coffee I have ever tasted. And I lived in North Dakota for 4 years. I also got a breakfast sandwich which was really really tasty! It has been a few days, and I did not get sick from all the filth there, so I will be back. The alcohol in the strong drinks probably kills most of the bacteria. Also, all the patrons were very friendly and politely nodded at me. The waitress was slow to non-existent, the food took forever. But at least it was good.

Not impressed with breakfast here, ordered the Benedict, and what I got was paper thin Sysco bacon with 2 over hard eggs with cheddar cheese, no hollandaise. Served with frozen poorly prepared potatoes. Will not return.

I wanted to like this place more. The good: an excellent and huge cup of coffee and a fun, eclectic atmosphere. The bad: oh it's so dirty. I'm not usually put off by tired decor but I left with sticky jeans just from sitting in this place.

Cafe Racer is a fun, wildly unique kind of place! Cafe Racer also houses the Museum of Bad Art which is a real hoot while you are waiting on your food. There are racing stripes on the floor, extra assurance that the cafe lives up to it's name. Some parts of the cafe seem a little run down. Some of the cushioned seats are sliced up and an extra room looks like it is used for storage. That seems to add to the charm of Cafe Racer however. Cafe Racer has a sad and unfortunate notoriety to it and that was when a shooting took place on May 30th 2012. In the end of there were six people dead, including the gun man. Amongst those that were killed were Joseph Albanese and Andrew Keriakedes who both worked there and were artists to the community. They added a lot of heart and soul to Cafe Racer as there are several pictures paying tribute to them. As a result there was a slight eeriness to the place that something horrific happened here when this place was for eating, socializing and fun. Some of those tribute photos are upstairs in a lounge like room. The food here Steve and I really enjoyed! I got a Whiskey BBQ sandwich which tasted wonderful! I also ordered a Bloody Mary which had a lot of spice to it! Something I was looking for for a long time. Since I moved here at least. The service was friendly and prompt. I would love to go back and see myself doing so in the future!

Overpriced mediocre food. Lame service. The only thing memorable about this place is the decor and that you can bring your dog.

This place is really quirky but very cozy. It's a great neighborhood cafe, and turns into a gathering place for local musicians at night. There's comfy couches in the upstairs area that are really cozy and great to study at. the soup is always homemade and delicious. it's a grungy crowd that hangs out there, kinda hardened looking people, but they're all incredibly friendly and nice. dogs are welcome here. it kind of has a lord of the rings feel to it.

Food was good, but waited over an 70 minutes for just a sandwich, and didn't even get my water until 20-30 minutes in. They must have been understaffed. The walls of art were great, there was a big menu, and everyone was nice and friendly at least. I'll probably give this place another chance.

Love Racer! Walked here after school one day and was completely captivated by the whole artsy, land-of-misfit-toys vibe. I ordered a latte and an appetizer of baked tater tots whilst doing homework. At one point, I wanted to wander around the café and just look at all the interesting art on the walls. Great people watching here as well. Coffee tasted kind of like dirt, but you cant beat the atmosphere and the heavenly tater tots.

I thought I would patronize a local business for my morning latte. When I walked in I thought I'd accidentally walked into a bar, not a coffee shop. Oh, it is a bar/coffee shop. And a dump. The barista/ bartender knew little about customer service or how to make a latte. It had to be the worst latte I've ever purchased. The coffee tasted like the dregs from a pot of Folgers Coffee. And they charged $3.50 for it. No thanks, there are many places nearby that know how to make a proper latte.

You get what you're looking for. Cafe racer us a cool place. Very unique. Not the cleanest, fastest or tastiest in town. But it is an experience and I like the place. Staff have always been cool, not overly nice. Worth going to.

I went there to play with my band (a calm, ruly lot) on a tour through the Northwest, and so I know that traveling bands aren't exactly welcomed with open arms. I also know that our experience would not necessarily be the same of a usual customer, but good customer service should be experienced by anyone who enters an establishment, and this is not what we found. The bartender was short with us when we first arrived, and was annoyed when we asked him one question about the sound system, saying "in the email you said you would do your own sound", which we did anyway (and had to use our own sound system in the end, since theirs was spotty). His attitude for the rest of the night towards us continued to be the same, though we bought food and drinks with our own money and tipped. At one point when I went up to the counter to get a refill, he glanced at me and gave me a refill without a word. This poor service combined with muggy weather and paintings of creepy clown children, disfigured naked women, and 80's brides made for an unpleasant experience overall.

Didn't know what to expect from this place at first. I had always driven by but never decided to go in. Finally went in one night when I needed a place to work late. Pros: Unlike normal coffee shops/diners they have a full bar. Which is a huge plus. The staff is super friendly. And the people hanging out are characters. Which is great because you always have someone to talk to. I even like how if you go in the back it is secluded and you can chat with your friends, play board games or I can't believe I am saying this but you can study. Con's: The back is a little like a cave. Not a lot of natural light but that is also a positive when u are trying to detach from everything. Overall loved the experience here. They are also open late till 2am so it will become my official late night work spot.

The space felt a little dark on the morning my friend and I had brunch here, but that may have just been the weather. I had the vegetarian eggs Benedict, and the faux sausage underneath the eggs was so good! The server could have been a bit more friendly, but she was pleasant enough.

This place is WAY more run down than it appeared in any pictures online. I came here on a Saturday morning to get breakfast and coffee after being curious about this place for a while. There's something about Cafe Racer where you walk in and feel kind of awkward. It's a little dark and a little small. The employees are casually engaging in conversation with one another and their patrons and didn't pay me any attention when I walked in, so I took that to mean I could seat myself. That didn't really bother me. But after watching the three employees continue with their conversation without acknowledging me sitting there for about ten minutes, I grew rather annoyed. The waitress was literally sitting down behind the counter on her IPHONE not doing shit. I finally asked her if I was supposed to order at the counter. "omigod I totally thought someone would have gotten your order by now! I am so sorry hon!" was her response. I appreciated her friendliness but the lack of professionalism and knowledge of customer service these people have is baffling. They forgot to give me silverware, coffee refills, water, among other things. The corned beef hash was amazing. Personally I would rather go to Beth's if I'm looking for the hole in the wall breakfast joint vibe. I was let down by Cafe Racer in terms of everything besides the food. Which took upwards of forty five minutes to be prepared.

    (2)
  • Kevin P.

I ordered the corned beef hash and was disappointed by it. The eggs came out burnt (all brown and hard) and was definitely not sunnyside up like I ordered. Also, the amount of corned beef in the hash was not worth the $11 price- there should have been a bit more. The staff was also pretty caught up in their own conversation and took a bit for someone to come and serve us.

Update: My heart and prayers go out to all who frequent this place and those who have suffered loss. Very unique environment, a couple chairs for outside seating at times, busier street. Coffee drinks reasonably priced, service acceptable. It is worth visiting for the art on the wall and the other eclectic items that fill this place. There is art and decor items everywhere! Bring your camera!

Visiting Cafe Racer pleasantly reminded me of the delightful little cafes I found all the little French villages during my recent visit. Much like an English 'local', these unassuming little spots are more than just a cafe/bar, but a real service to the local community. These were the real 'Third Places' before Starbucks packaged the concept. At Cafe Racer, you find a nifty collection of spaces that make the place seem more intimate than it's total floor space would suggest. The food is OK, which is actually remarkable when you consider that the kitchen is smaller than my walk-in closet, and barely has room for the cook. Given the tiny space to work in, I am surprised and impressed by the size of the menu, which does seem to have something for everyone (compare this to my recent review of The Attic at Salish Lodge; a much larger and higher-end establishment, and yet their positively anemic menu is shamed by what the Lilliputian kitchen at CR offers). The bar has a very nice selection of beers on tap and liquors to choose from as well. As mentioned before, Cafe Racer really shines as a place for the neighborhood crowd to gather. The proprietor really makes an effort to accommodate groups, so it's not uncommon to see knitting circles, student study groups, and even a local scooter club holding meetings here. The service can be a little slow at times if things are busy, but this isn't for want of effort on the part of the staff; they always seem quite pleasant and efficient, so have another beer and be patient. Bottom line: Cafe Racer is a nice place to hang out and enjoy honest home cooking and drinks at good prices. Check it out!

I ordered a breakfast sandwich on a bagel. It was ready lightning fast and it was exploding out of the sides. Peppers and onions were neatly folded inside the egg like an omelet. Was perfect with a spicy Bloody Mary and a bottomless mug of coffee to get me going on that sleepy morning. Wasn't too busy in there and I left feelin' a little tingly and super full. Can't wait to go back for another brunch.

Waitress got two things wrong with our order: husband ordered his breakfast burrito wet (with enchilada sauce and cheese on top) but it arrived dry. I ordered field roast sausage to replace the bacon that would've come with my french toast, but the sausage didn't arrive until I reminded her and by then we were totally done with our food and drinks. She brought a cup of enchilada sauce to fix my husband's order but no cheese and he was half way through the burrito by the time the sauce arrived ( cuz who wants to eat their burrito cold?). Despite getting two things wrong with our order she didn't seem in much of a hurry to rectify the order...such as checking periodically if the cook had our order fixes ready...I could see my husband's enchilada sauce waiting for pick up, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting, while she and another waitress idly chatted. Plus she still charged us a $1 extra for the wet burrito and also for the veggie sausage. It's great they provide field roast sausage as well as soy chorizo for the vegetarians amongst us. Food was fine, not impressive or noteworthy, but we'll still be back to try their biscuits and veggie hot dogs and such.

It's not a bad place for breakfast in an area that's a bit starved for it, and rather eclectic in general - for better and worse. I want to like it. This is a breakfast review. Pros: Staff is extremely friendly and casual. This is obviously their home. Food is pretty good. Coffee is decent. Generally active but not full. Quiet. There is no doubt whatsoever that the you're sitting in the middle of a pretty hip place in the middle of Seattle. Cons: Staff has been extremely ditzy, forgetting orders and in general distracted and missing what they're doing. Food selection is limited and slow; I wish I didn't have to ding them for that. Decor is distracting and (dare I say it) intentionally tacky and cluttered. I want that jukebox to work, darn it. Bottom line: My best friend likes this as a quiet and unassuming breakfast place (where the alternative is either Starbucks or Costa's). I find it a touch creepy (sorry!).

I think this place and Rat and Raven are technically my local bars, I have been here a few times. Good beer, okay service. Didn't try the food. Love the art and the games on the back. Big dinning space and I remember the bathroom being clean enough. I have good memories at this place, it really pains me the recent news and horrific events that happened at this location. We're all in morn for now. It's even difficult to rate.

The food was a 3. I went with a few friends and they had various sandwiches. Two of them ate only half. The burger was the best and he gave it a 7. Decent bar food but not what you'd come here for. The artwork, the space, the staff, and the upstairs lounge are all 5 stars. The artwork is quirky, the bar atmosphere has a lot of character and the staff are very real people. If you're visiting soon, have their seasonal summer ale. It's crisp and very flavorful. If I lived nearby, I would come here often as it's a place to meet very interesting people and enjoy conversation.

They aren't as great as they claim they are. They gave themselves rave reviews in their menu, but my date and I both agreed that we'd had better. He had the french toast and left his potatoes on the plate- they looked like generic potatoes o'brien (and overcooked at that!). I had the tuna melt, which was a generous portion, and toasted nicely, but had a funny flavor I never figured out. The side of coleslaw was very heavy on the mayo flavor leaving it feeling heavy, which I don't think coleslaw should. The wait staff appeared indifferent to our being there and that waiting on us was not high on their priority list- just barely serving us; I felt more ignored and like she was put out by us being there. I hope their music is better than their food.... but I don't plan on going back to find out.

Racer is a true example of a community business. It's always been more than a business; it's a place that's really part of the neighborhood, and it reaches out to the locals and to the arts scene like few other joints in the area. It's not hard to see why people are so fiercely loyal to it. The atmosphere is pure sweet spot for me: hip and smart but inviting rather than exclusionary, with comfortable seating, a welcoming environment filled with local art, and a staff that is absolutely second to none. The food is fine, the drinks are extremely reasonably priced, and there's always something going on that's worth stopping by to see. Racer is a treasure.

I love going here for hangover brunch with a Mimosa or Bloody Mary. Decent food, strong drinks. I'm not a huge fan of the hipster presence, but that's not really the Racer's fault. It's difficult to rate now due to all the memories, but it's really great to see the Racer is still going strong, and I hear doing even better business now than ever. The aesthetic of this place is Late Collegiate/Early Goodwill. While my wife and I are decades removed from our post collegiate days, we really enjoyed our breakfast here. We sat at the bar, chatted with the wait person and cook, sipped great coffee and polished off excellent hash and bacon & eggs. The house hash brown potatoes with red peppers and onions impressed the potato critique in my wife. The fifth star is for maintaining such a good neighborly vibe despite the trevails this place has been through in the last year.

My go to breakfast place for a Sunday. Love the combination of cheese and cool obscuro music videos they play on the old CRT tv - always good for a chuckle when munching your bacon sandwiches. Staff are great and everything that comes out of the kitchen is done simply and done well.

Corned beef hash extraordinary. East coast sandwich had just the right amount of zing. All six of us loved the food, though a bit slow. Personable service.

All the best, guys. I enjoyed Cafe Racer immensely on my trip to Seattle several years ago. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and you can count on another visit from me on my next jaunt to your fair city.

The coffee is lovely, the music superb, the art mesmerizing. We like the unpretentious and hearty comfort food, I treasure that the barista can remember my "usual" after a long absence and starts grinding when he sees me walk in. The paper is usually available for reading/puzzle solving. I love Cafe Racer for its jazz sessions, its quirky vibe and its hospitality.

A little piece of Portland in the UW area. This definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea, but that said, they do a great job of breakfast. The place is quirky as all hell and yeah its a 'dive' coffee shop that does serve food. It's oddly decorated as the menu says, don't come here if you expect to eat quickly or not have someone talk to you. It is what it is. The good: Interesting people Nothing like people doing some serious drinking at 11am on the weekend The prices are reasonable, especially for the area and there's parking and seating The bad: The food is hit or miss. People seem to love the wet burritos. Sadly, they are pre-made, albeit on site, 3 times a week. The one I had was a wet burrito, but it was definitely stale and it had no taste. Other items I have had were good. The neutral: I can't knock them for service. There's often one person there and they do their best to keep up. The menus warns of this, so I can't knock them for it.

This is a coffee house dive. I would soak up its delightful vibe all the time if I could. Arts and Crafts on the 3rd Saturday of the month - some great people there with cool stuff! Steampunk, lovely BEADWORK jewelry, second hand Tupperware (I got a pickle keeper!!!!) and other misc artish things. The coffee was super delicious. The upstairs has a nice acoustic guitar for the playin', and a couple couchy areas. There's a table for art or 'puterin, or for meetin up with a Buffy fanclub, which was about to happen while we were there. The place is kind of like being in your best friend's basement during the 70's, except unfortunately, no neon beer signs or "5 minutes in the closet" games going on. The walls are undulating and cobbled together with narrow pieces of panelling. It's homely and cosy. What a nice place. There's beer and stuff too. Maybe next time I'm there I'll try some of that.

Dive coffee shop. Dive coffee shop/restaurant/bar. Dive coffee shop/restaurant/bar/music venue/museum of bad art (their term - not that I disagree). Dive coffee shop/restaurant/bar/music venue/museum/barber. Barber. I'm looking at a chimpanzee, with blue, bejeweled crown, white ruff, and azure princess waist skirt tucked beneath pointy ape breasts. She's not looking at me, thank god, it will take a little more stress to get to that. To my left is a paint-by-number palomino, a moped in a mosaic of mirrors, and a striking Elvis on black velvet. I'm sitting in a - I've been trying to decide what color it is, it must be metallic maroon - booth, with a cushioned back rising at least a foot above my head. There's a yarn rendition on Van Gogh's Starry Night and a working Pacman machine in front of me. I can hear people a wall away in the bar, and the cars on the street, rushing by on busy Roosevelt, but there's noone here but my ticka tick tapping, the ape, a Jesus - no, several Jesuses - competing with several Elvises for dominance of the velvet, a poodle in a sweater... just these people and me. (Poodle = people? Maybe in clothing - why not?) I'm at a huge table - it's actually not bad for studying. They say it picks up later. There's live music every night, starting around 9-10, except for, usually, Wednesdays and Sundays. I'm assuming they've stopped giving hair cuts by then. They go off their regular menu: sandwiches, burgers, dogs, and some apps at 10 and off goes the espresso machine, too. They've got tea, of a packaged variety, brand name: 'Stash'. Pretty divey, as I said, (I'm wondering if they'd be irritated or pleased by that description) but big enough tables, quiet enough people, and it's like this most of the time I'm sure, as the place is split into several rooms - and it would be a rare day that you couldn't have one to yourself or nearly so. The BLT was edible (slight understatement), came with chips and a pickle. The double shot of espresso was pleasantly bitter... the WiFi's fine (badcafefad), and what else can I say? All systems go, I suppose. I'll be back here some late night to see how that goes. I'd like to see someone give Bauhaus and Online a run for their money, only being open until 1. We'll see.

I went here to see a band perform and was confused as to where they'd be playing. This is such a cramped bar, sectioned off into different rooms. Not good for seeing musicians. There seemed to be a lot of homeless looking people hanging around the bar area, and there were a lot of random people who kept wandering back and preparing food and drinks. My sandwich was not awesome and the person making it was definitely not wearing gloves, nor did he wash his hands. The only positive I could find was the decor. World's Worst Art Museum? Brilliant.

This place is a hidden gem.. GREAT drink prices, friendly patrons, CLEAN bathrooms, parking, and a Vespa that looks like a disco ball parked in front. Also a great place to catch local music. Easy to find as well! Met the owner and he is topshelf! just wants to have a respectable, cool venue for us to enjoy. haven't tried the coffee..but i'll be back soon to do that!

More of a bar that will serve you an espresso if they have to. As a bar, it is great. They have some harder to find beers and some specialty Euro picks. Has all kinds of seating such as barstools, table & chairs, and couches. BUT, as a coffee shop, umph. Large size is medium at best, coffee kind of had that dirt taste to it, condiments area had only white sugar and sweet & low as it's sweeteners (no blue or yellow fake sweeteners) and no 1/2 and 1/2 (or other) avail. Presentation was decent and the latte foam was perfect. I hate to only give it 3 stars, but I came here for coffee and was somewhat unsatisfied. Had I come here for a beer, it probably would have gotten 4.

A Spokane friend came over this weekend and a group of us current Seattle-dwellers wanted to take him to Die Beirstube. It was too busy, so we decided to leave and head down Roosevelt and improvise a destination. We ended up here. They have a good beer selection. They do have hard liquor but not the best variety. I asked for a Harvey Wallbanger, but they didn't have one of the ingredients. It wasn't meant to be. I ended up getting a margarita. They used Jose Cuervo (me and Jose never have been and never will be amigos). It was extremely potent and left me very buzzed after I forced myself to finish it. My psychotic friends each got Long Islands and were damn near incoherent upon drinking them. If you are with a group and want to have a good time (not like that, you pervert), go upstairs. They have a big TV with a killer selection of movies to watch (The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Speed). They've also got board games for patrons to use. We played Scrabble because that's just how we roll. They had a live bluegrass band downstairs which added to the already homey atmosphere. Bottom line: Good prices, strong drinks, plenty of options as to how to entertain yourself, and an excellent atmosphere. I'll be back. NOTE: They apparently have coffee and espresso in addition to alcohol. Neat. I'll have to try it sometime.

Cafe racer is an interesting little bar with a lot of character. They have an OBAMA room (official bad arts museum of art), which is covered with really ugly and weird art. They have free live music several times a week. The house band is good and performs circus acts like swallowing swords and lying on nails during their shows. They've got an upstairs that's essentially some random living room with a bunch of ugly old couches, board games, a t.v, an xbox, books and even guitars lying around. They've got plenty of other odd and interesting things, including a hair salon! The place draws a very diverse and interesting crowd that is very fun to see. For example a comic book club meets here weekly, and I believe this bar is also the main hangout of many seattle circus/carney folks.

This place isn't for everyone. But it's the second home for many a folk. Good music, comfortable seating, tv and games upstairs, relaxed atmosphere, cheap drinks, decent eats. And the people who go to Cafe Racer are equally friendly and open for a conversation as they are willing to let you chill in the corner by yourself. As awesome at one in the afternoon as it is at one in the morning.

Cafe Racer now has several other reasons to visit. The food has always been excellent (I especially like the burgers, and there's corned beef hash on the weekend brunch menu), but now they have a permanent exhibit called "The Official Bad Art Museum of Art" installed in the new section they've just opened. They doubled in size and have plenty of room to listen to live music or host meetings and get-togethers. I just tried "The Woodring", a special sandwich named after artist Jim Woodring, and it's a tasty vegetarian option for those with adventurous palates. Some of the ingredients are bread-and-butter pickles, mustard and peanut butter, but I'm not going to say any more :) The "Wonder Weiners" are also, in a word, wonderful. I like mine with a Manny's. This is my favorite new hang-out and it seems to be popular with a lot of cool cats. In the last few times I was there, Lonesome Shack played on Tuesday nights and God's Favorite Cheesecake (a group including some Circus Contraption folks) played on Thursdays. Friday is "Open Mic" for anyone so inclined. They got a new sound system and PA, so the place is really starting to rock. I'm looking forward to my next visit. I hope they have chili! It's one of the best items on the menu, and they serve it with Frito's, just the way I like it!

My favorite bar in U-District. I guess it's kinda on the edge of Ravenna. The bar is so laid back, you're practically have your head between your legs. Wait, what? Something about the ambiance, attitude of the owner and bartenders have all combined to provide a great experience each and every time. I especially like the live music on thursdays. They have a variety of musicians play one of which is the folky God's Favorite Beekcake. Alright, I'm not totally positive that's the name, but they're a pretty hilarious group. The way the place is setup provides chances for privacy, while being great for groups at the same time. It's very versatile that way. Their kitchen is pretty decent as well. One of the times I was here, they were kind enough to open the kitchen up again to make me some tater tots. I was soooo hungry, and it definitely hit the spot. I've been holding back on reviewing this place. It's too good to publicize, but then I realized I can't keep such a good thing to myself!

I went here for the first time tonight. We had a pretty large party 10+ people and although we reserved the room upstairs (which is an awesome space, with a TV, board games, books, a large table and couches) there was plenty of space for us in the OBAMA room. We eventually went downstairs in time to hear the band play (they were really good). Their nachos leaves something to be desired. I would eat before you leave the house. Just saying. Save that money for beer. The owner came over and introduced himself -- really nice guy. We also met someone from the band as well. Cool atmosphere, pretty good nachos, and a very cute bartender to boot. I'm definitely going back!

I'd only been there a few times before this past weekend, but now I am officially a fan! I discovered this folk-punk band recently and found out they were on tour and headed towards Seattle, but they'd had trouble finding a show here. With just a few days before their arrival, I set out to try and find them one. The people at Cafe Racer were willing to take a chance and open their doors to some scruffy bluegrass punks from Chicago, and they were really friendly and accommodating. We didn't have time to publicize the show, but the regulars who showed up got into it and we ended up feeling right at home and having a great time. Definitely looking forward to checking out the regular Thursday-night show by God's Favorite Beefcake!

Seriously bad art--of the naked, velvety variety--great people, cool space, nice owner. Go here. Do it. I've been a few times, and every time I'm there, I meet someone new who is incredibly cool. That's rare in a town that relies on laptops in coffee shops and Ipods for canceling out noise (or, in this case, ME). Great people behind the bar, nice people AT the bar, and an interesting array of scooters/motorcycles/bikes outside. The best thing about this place is its' diverse clientele, and I've never seen any douchey douchebags (read: corporate types, frat boys, shiny-shirt wearers). It's just a place you can go and chill, and people accept you at face value. Plus, the food is good. Check it out!

Nothing specific to say but: awesome. Enjoyed the food, enjoyed the espresso, enjoyed the crowd. if you don't like this one, please don't diss it, there are plenty others... travel down the road. This one deserves a 5 stars. P.S. Kate the bartender is relatively new here from Atlanta, welcome her to the PNW. She brings appreciation in her heart.

Friendly staff and good food at decent prices. I go here frequently to do work during the day or in the evening to grab a beer and have used the upstairs area for small group meetings. The Official Bad Art Museum decor is fabulous. My favorite is the Jesus Peep picture downstairs near the stage but it is fun looking at all of the crazy art work. Many of the people who go here during the day are regulars which gives Cafe Racer a very local feel.

This is definitely a quirky place. Sad clown paintings sit next to a Virgin Mary made entirely of Peeps. Bar at night, cafe during the day (also bar during the day). This is a great place to park for a few hours to write, read, study. In the back there are games, tvs, and sofas for you or the kids. I've been here for a hula music night and there were kids in the back. I love a family friendly place.

WOW!! What a cool place. Did another pub crawl and stayed here for two rounds!! Shoot, I wish wew would have avoided pies and pints and had three rounds here. Found cool vibe! Nice sitting at the bar, listening to old Kinks music and talking to the owner! Unlike other water holes, this place is not meant for the college age crowd! And the art work! How horribly wonderful!! Once again, on a first date, forget it! Under 30 and have a degree, you won't understand the place! See a guy with tye dye and a funky hat, say hello to me and I will buy you a drink!

Cafe Racer was amazing before, but now that they have their Official Bad Art Museum of Art ( officialbadartmuseumofar… ), it's hard to imagine a bar in the U-District that can even come close. Coffee shop feel, cheap pitchers, game room, comfy chairs, esoteric musical attractions and great people make it worth dragging your friends away from the typical Ave scene.

Waited for around 20 minutes. No service at all, so my friend and I just left. Got a few glares, but that's about it. I don't get why people like it here. Everyone just seemed extremely pretentious.

This place is a really nice place to have a drink and soak up the vibe. The atmosphere is what I describe as very "indy". Its like an indy coffee shop that's also a bar. Definitely worth checking out. 4 out of 5 stars because I would probably avoid the food here (even tho they have pie) until they fix their vermin problem as my friend saw a mouse there the other day.

My new favorite place for breakfast. Not only is the waitress psychic (yes, now is exactly when I want to pay) but the food is good and prices are reasonable. The coffee is great and there is the best Vespa in the world just inside the door... Blingy doesn't begin to describe it. The food is not fast but it's not slow either... Completely reasonable amout of time for a great breakfast.

I consider this place an extension of my living room. It seems to attract an eclectic mix of interesting people. I have made several friends there over the past few years. Full bar, decent food menu, and great brunch on the weekends. Fresh homemade cookies and/or dessert type of items often available, and live music on most if not every night. Biker friendly and dog friendly.

I liked this place pretty well. I came on a Sunday to hear some live/experimental music, and was starving so I ended up eating here as well. The food was surprisingly good, considering it doesn't seem to be the focus. It's pretty vegetarian friendly. I believe I had artichoke dip and nachos with vegetarian chili on them. The people, staff and patrons, didn't seem particularly friendly or nice and there may have been a bit of pretension in the air (or maybe I'm projecting). But, it didn't detract from the experience. It did make it a little awkward coming in and trying to find a seat, having to move in the middle of eating to make room for performance seating. Unfortunately, the music being performed was sort of electronic and ethereal and the woman at the table next to me didn't seem to realize that she could put her phone on silent if she was going to use it through the entire performance. But, such is life! I'd return to this place.

Pros: Strong Drinks, good cliental (artsy folk), live music (on certain nights), and Tofu-dogs! The staff is friendly and very laid back, and it's easy to feel at home here. Cons: On a busy night, it's just too small. I've heard they're going to be expanding, which would be great. I hope it's true.

Great coffee and pretty decent breakfast sandwich... stopped by here to fuel up before work. It seems like they had a lot of music on the playlist, but the bartender/server/barista seemed to be on a Johnny Thunders kick this morning. I guess if that's OK with the regulars, it's fine by me. Oh yeah, I hear they have live music too.

This place is close to my house in Ravenna. It has changed ALOT since the remodel. Cant say for the better. Before there was an odd ball, an old neighborhood hippy, a loner, a weirdo, a rockabilly, and yes a few hipsters. 2009, enter the year of the hipster. Still a much better environment than 90% of the bars in Seattle. But that ONE bartender here, the "cool" guy (yeah him), is probably the worst bartender in the city. My friend ordered a drink, we waited like 10 minutes, dude served a few ladies, then came back and asked if we "still wanted that drink?" We said yes, and he said he didnt have any margarita mix, so he would "have to make some and it might take a minute." Little turd. Can you handle it, making drinks as a bartender? If not for him, 4 stars.

This is a charming, quirky, very welcoming little neighborhood bar. They've got food and strong drinks, and the thrift store decor and relaxed atmosphere make it a very easy place to hang out and strike up conversations. They've got live music from time to time, and feature truly bizarre rotating art shows with unusual themes like "heartbreak" and "strong medicine." Cafe Racer very quickly became an essential part of the Ravenna neighborhood. Part of the charm of this place is the amateur bartenders and mediocre cooks. Usually I like how casual it feels, but when you're looking for a comforting drink and a sandwich, it can be annoying to get a poorly made cocktail or burnt bread. If you like a bar that feels like a friend's living room, this is the place.

I come here every week for the drawing party in the back - its the modern visual art version of the Algonquin Table. This place is great! Homey, chill, good beers on taps, friendly bartender and none of the "man" keepin' me down! Though I don't often imbibe - they have a good polish sausage with kraut n' onions. The people are what make this place!

Did you know? A "cafe racer" is a kind of motorcycle, popular among rockers in the 60s. It seems ironic then that this place has a huge following of Vespa riders. Either way, whether you're a mod or a rocker (or even a punk or a hipster) this place is the shit.

A great neighborhood bar in the Ravenna area. Coffee, beer, wifi, snacks, walls filled with art, live music, interesting people, awesome times. There aren't a lot of bars I would feel comfortable hanging out in by myself, but this is definitely one of them. Plenty of space to cozy up with a laptop or book, in one of the back or side rooms, but the staff and regulars are friendly and I always feel welcome sitting at the bar and chatting.

This was my first time at Cafe Racer. My boyfriend and I both got the incredible wonder wiener which was delicious! Bacon, cream cheese and green chilies, now that's a dog I can fall in love with. I liked the atmosphere a lot, very eclectic and cozy. The bartender/cook seemed really nice. I cant wait to come back and try something else.

I've been here thrice now, and it seems to get better every time. Tuesday nights there's a great old-time blues guy who goes by Lonesome Shack. the place has coffee, tea, beer, booze, food, booths, a bar, and games. the only drawback is that it feels kind of 'college-y', what with being in the u-district and all.

What a great place! Easily accessible, very hip and good coffee. They also have beer and wine. This is also the meeting place for the local Vespa club. I don't what it is about me and Vespa themed coffee shops... I love Motore Coffee, the Bauhaus, All City Coffee and now Cafe Racer. Maybe I should buy a vespa, but I digress.... Wifi is simple and free to use. There are lots of outlets available, though the cafe is not that big. It wasn't packed the day I was here so it was easy to find a place to camp. Connect to the access point "CafeRacer", though you will see about 12 access points within range.

When Die Bier Stube was overcrowded, I decided to head on over to Cafe Racer, which is the other awesome establishment at Ravenna and 60th. I grabbed a beer and sat down at the big red booth in the corner with a few friends and we all mused at the incredibly wacky art they have on the walls. This place is fun, has a variety of seating choices, a good atmosphere, live music and a fun vibe. I haven't really eaten here that much, I just mostly come for the beer, but I love the decor and atmosphere so much that it's worth going again for just a beer.

"I can't really tell if they're hipster or scuzzy" = perfect description of Cafe Racer by a former resident of the Cafe Racer neighbourhood, better known as my friend Kristina. Weirdly, my best friend, close friends, and boyfriend all lived together in very close proximity to Cafe Racer and I've been passing it by very regularly for the past 2-ish years, always wondering if I'd like it. We finally went in on Friday night after die BierStube had absolutely nowhere to sit. The Racer had just cleared out after some live music and was relatively empty so we were able to grab a drink and hang out for a while. The bartender was incredibly friendly and patient and the people at the bar seemed like easygoing, happy regulars. The atmosphere was a little calmer than I would have liked, but that was understandable as they had just finished with a show not too long before we came in. I went back today to grab a latte and was impressed that the coffee smelled and tasted delicious! I'm so glad to finally have walked into this place-- I'll definitely be coming more often now. :)

I love the new museum of bad art extension of the old cafe racer, it is now much more spacious and better for shows. You can also pop in for a haircut in the back if your timing is right, and you might catch the old penis skateboard sitting outside. This place has the best BLT around as far as I'm concerned, I don't know what makes it so good, but I love it. The brunch is a great hangover cure. The bartenders are bitchin' and the nightlife is always entertaining. Always the best music playing, and the best beers pourin.

I've only been here twice, once before they extended into the old thrift shop next door and last night. I am pretty impressed and feel a bit guilty that I live so close and haven't been there more often. The atmosphere is really great and it is one of the few alcohol serving venues in the U-District that I actually feel comfortable in. Artwork and seating layout is really comfortable and unique. I have promised myself to make an effort to visit here way more frequently and I would recommend you check it out!

I like to drink...whiskey. Not beer. Which is why this place had been open so long without me drinking inside it. (thought it was a beer only joint...) Last week, for a friend's birthday, he suggested going here. Not wanting to be a bitch and refusing to go somewhere just because I couldn't drink Jamo, I walked the 2 blocks down there. Well guess what kittens? BOOZE! This place serves Hard A and beer, and is cute as a button! I guess I was severely misinformed... Was a Cute little hipster crowd (ie. lots of American Apparel leggings) but my little rock n roll self still felt right at home. Lots of Beer on tap (if that's your thing) My buddy was stoked they had 9lb porter. Only drawback? They called last call at midnight, which I could see if the place was dead, but the whole little front room was full. Don't know if that's normal for them. We had only been there about an hour which was a bummer, but I just walked myself down to Teddy's to say "Hi" to Dan. Overall, I was glad I was forced to come here and I will for sure be back. Viva Ravenna!

Cafe Racer is uber cool and you can always find some retired shipyard worker, circus freak, or hipster there enjoying some good eats. The best part? They will bring you a tray with at least 20 different hot sauces, many of which I have never heard of. On top of all that, the owners run the joint and they really could care less whether you like them, the food, or the restaurant. That will keep me as a customer.

This place rocks. I needed a place to finish up some work late one afternoon, and Cafe Racer was recommended. Service was great, music rocked (lots of good punk/KEXP), has internet (although a bit spotty), and any restaurant that includes Alka-Seltzer on the weekend brunch menu will always get major points from me.

Awesome bar. Great beers on draught. Good prices for the u-district. Free music often. Only complaint is the outright rude, unprofessional female bartender with animal tattoos. She should've lost her job after how she treated myself and numerous other patrons one evening. Other than this deficiency, Cafe Racer is highly recommended! Especially when Operation ID is playing! Enjoy!

The Lucky Dog is now Cafe Racer. The new owners are making sure to invite any and every group possible and make sure they feel welcome. The coffee is smooth and drinkable. The decor is contemporary and casual. Its the type of neighborhood place that I enjoy visiting.
