"Moderately priced German cuisine in the heart of Washington State Bavaria." I have mixed feelings on my experience with this restaurant. The slow service definitely stood out during my visit. The Baren Haus is conveniently located in the corner of a busy intersection. This is a prime tourist traffic spot and may pose a parking challenge. The restaurant was half-full when we arrived and we were promptly seated at a long table. There was a long wait for our server to take our drink orders (approximately 20 minutes) and a longer wait time for our entrée orders. I opted for the Schntizel with spatzel and cabbage pickles. We were served house bread and butter and offered refills on our soda. Our entrées arrived within 15 minutes. The schnitzel was rather soggy and bland. The red cabbage was tasty and spatzel had a nice bite to it. Getting our check took a little more time and our server was barely present. Overall, I would like to return this restaurant and give it another try. I will update this review once I've revisited this establishment.

Not impress by the food. The food warmer is a microwave that makes the bread difficult. Food is very bland and And the execution for the food is not well. Was disappointed with the food, period. But the service was nice. And honestly if they fixed their food, I will comeback. For now, no.

Low quality meat and crappy service. It has been a while since I walked out of a place with half the food on my plate and no tip with the check. All that the kid who waited on us did was bitch about working and mumble under his breath a lot. This is such a good location and someone should open a restaurant there.

The S/O and I headed to Leavenworth for a daytrip and arrived there around lunch time. I figured we were in a "German" town, so I wanted schnitzel. We walked along the street, reading menus until we found a restaurant that had the schnitzel I wanted and food that she wanted. Maybe we should have kept looking... The schnitzel was rather bland, which was hugely disappointing. I had such high hopes, but that's life. The German potatoes weren't bad, but the starch really shouldn't be the high point of the meal, right?

Gross. Burnt pizza, flies baked to beer glass, wait staff didn't seem to have it together, maybe because I was there on a Tuesday.

Eating here is a family tradition - second generation. Know this - we don't come for the food. It's mediocre at best and pretty expensive. Entrees step up to the 20.00 mark and you don't get anything special. They recently redecorated. It would have been great if they had hit the menu, too. But on a snowy day around six o'clock? This is the place to stop for a beer - just for the atmosphere. We will keep coming back.

My husband and I ate at this place on February 22, 2014. The food was very good, but that's about all. The service was mediocre at best. After getting our food, no one checked on us until we were about finished. When the server brought the check, I told him how much I liked the food and that it's been a long time since I've had it. All he said was "we take Visa, MasterCard and cash". No interaction at all and doesn't know what a smile is. When I paid the check, I noticed the price on my Jagerschnitzel was wrong. In the menu, it's listed at $17.95 and on the check, it was $18.95. The server told me it was a "town tax", but my husbands meal didn't have anything added to it. There was nothing done about this and I told him we would never go back there. No where in the menu is anything about any "town tax". If there is such a tax, it shouldn't be built into the price on the ticket. The price on the menu should be exactly what's on the ticket.

Average food. Cost was on the high side. Our waitress was helpful and pleasant though.

When I checked the menu - the Ruben looked like it was made - in my terms - correctly. My wife and I split it and both agreed - poor quality meat and exceptional poor tasting dressing. We also split a French Dip - and for the cost - cheap quality meat - what little there was on a bland bun. Also - we had sort of frustrating start - the gentlemen seating us asked if we wanted a menu - I guess if we come again we need to get a fortune teller to tell us what they have - can't figure out that question. Also we needed to ask for silverware. Overall - poor quality food at a high price.

Very authentic German food! Very well-done, so happy we came here and they have Bitburger beer on tap.

Ate here our first night this weekend in Leavenworth. Great choices, had the Jager Schnitzel, which was excellent. Partner had the sausage combination which was also we excellent. Place want busy, the hostess disappeared then another one arrived to steat us. Staff seemed a bit down, except the server we had. He was very good and a character. Enjoyed and would recommend.

I was really not impressed. A bit pricey for the serving size. I had the bratwurst and it was tasteless.

Big portions, great service, nice atmosphere. Food was good. I tried the beef rouladen, my wife had the jägerschnitzel. Both were good cuts of meat and well seasoned and prepared. The fried potatoes were very authentic.

Got the sausage combo and the schnitzel. Both were great and the sides were excellent as well. The sauerkraut was seriously delicious. Service was awesome too. Got our stuff split up and as requested. Great experience!!

First time visiting Leavenworth and had lunch at Baren Haus. Service was slow and we waited over 20 minutes for 3 sandwiches. Once our food finally arrived part of it was cold. Not a good impression to start the day visiting a new town :-(

So, my family of five was seated at a table right next to a large flatscreen on a cabinet. The top of the cabinet and the TV stand was COVERED in thick dust right at our eye level. Pretty gross! Service was real slow, there were four people busy at the back table rolling silverware chit chatting and one guy serving 5 tables. I had ordered the reuben, I liked the bread and it had plenty of corn beef but it was overpowered by the canned sauerkraut. My daughter had got the schnitzel it was tasty but the spaetzle lacked salt. Over all the food was good but the service was just so bad that I wont be back.

If you come here for lunch rather than for dinner, I think you will be more satisfied. Beer, pizza, sandwiches and some classic German dishes. I ordered the Reuben and fries (since I did, in fact, come here for lunch). Sandwich was good and also quite large (yay!). Fries were nothing special, but I definitely ate them. Service was fine and food came out promptly. Initially, we had been seated by the big windows in the front of the restaurant...but I asked to be moved after I spotted 2 yellow jackets bouncing off the upper panes. Our waiter briefly looked at me like I was a wimpy girl, but acquiesced and moved us to the back of the restaurant. I wasn't offended since I am very much a wimpy girl when it comes to any kind of stinging, flying insects. Yay for not hyperventilating!

My first time having a schnitzel.. And I loved it. Paired it with a nice cold hofbrau dunkel beer & it was a perfect meal. I will definitely be back!

You know how food usually tastes SO good when you're starving?? Yeah not even that could help the meal I had here. The only thing going for it was the fact that it had air conditioning when it was 99 degrees outside. I ordered the Spaghetti with Myzithra Cheese totally excited to get a cheesy, plate of pasta and was sorely disappointed. It came out and was some cold box pasta with the most piddly amount of grated Myzithra Cheese that you couldn't even taste it. At nearly $14 I'd say no thanks ever again! I was with some of my family and we were trying to make the best out of the paltry meals we all got and my sister had a bit of a laughing fit which the staff apparently thought was extremely off-putting since the looks they all gave us as they walked by suggested they thought we were nuts. Don't go here if you're looking for good food or fun!

We stopped in here on our first day in Leavenworth. We wanted some actual German food and Munchen Haus was swamped so we thought we'd give this place a try. When we first walked in, we were seated by the window which was SWARMED with flies. No one else was seated there so I found it annoying. I know that they can't control the flies, but at least don't seat your customers there. I asked to have our seat moved and they obliged. I ordered a Reuben sandwich and my boyfriend ordered a brat platter. Our food arrived and it was mediocre at best. The Reuben wasn't very flavorful and the kraut wasn't very good either. To add to it, I found a hair in my sandwich :( I gave them two stores because our waitress was very polite and apologetic and comp'd us the sandwich. She asked if I wanted a replacement and I said no. You can get better food elsewhere.

Authentic Bavarian cuisine, served by a friendly and attentive staff. A couple of menu items were not available, presumably due to the high volume of tourists in town for the tree-lighting festival. Overall, a totally pleasant experience!

  • Kalli S.

Ate here on 11/1/14. I ordered hot spiced wine that is seasonal for fall/winter and was told they did not have any. Being disappointed, I got the bratwurst sandwich. When the food arrived we waited 10 minutes to get utensils until i got up and got them. The brat had no taste and the bread was soggy due to the sauerkraut sitting on top for so long. My bf got the bavierian hamburger and it was not seasoned at all. Looked like it came straight out of the freezer. Couldn't drink the beer because of the amount of fruit Flys in it (which were every where). Only thing good was the live music!

Went for lunch with the wife. Firstly it took us about 5 minutes to be seated.. There is a note saying wait to be seated.. The place was empty. We where finally seated and we ordered our food.. The wife ordered steak sandwich which was over cooked and I ordered the chicken sandwich, which was plain dry in the middle of two pieces of a bun. Save your cash.. Went to Mac Donald's across the street.. Btw.. I never complain. But seriously..

  • Morten B.

What a rip off! Worst meal in a long time. Spaghetti was watery and the meat sauce lacked the key ingredient - MEAT! Sure they make a big pizza but the toppings took up only 1/4 perhaps of the whole thing. Basically just paid $22 for bread! Nothing worse than being ripped off and this place does just that! Should have known better since the male hostess had the laziest look and attitude I have ever seen. Must be lacking people who knows hospitality and how to run a restaurant in general. Happy New Year - just not at this place...

    (1)
  • Jason B.

Love the food, but oh my gosh is this place slow. We've come here every year for 4 years around New Years Eve, and it is consistently incredibly slow. It took 15 minutes to get our beer after we waited 20 minutes to order. Food is great though.

  • Steve V.

It's touristy, but that's pretty much what to expect of any shop or restaurant when visiting Leavenworth. They offer a wide selection of Bavarian and American cuisine, and had a nice selection of local and European beers on tap. It was quite crowded when we arrived for dinner, but the tables turned over at a fair pace so we didn't have to wait long to be seated. Our party enjoyed the charbroiled chicken breast and schnitzel, along with the loaf of warm bread brought out before the main course. The portions were quite large and tasty, and thoroughly justified their prices. The only oddity was that the kids' grilled cheese was unexpectedly served on a hearty rye bread (or something similar with caraway seeds), which our child did not enjoy the taste of, but which would be a great touch on an adult sandwich.

  • Greg C.

Don't bother telling your server how you would like your steak sandwich cooked - it all comes cooked so well done that there is no more moisture left in the steak. Perhaps this is because the chef thought I asked for a New York steak cooked like schnitzel. Medium rare means nothing to them. Pretty mediocre service, and very disappointing food. Does nowhere in this town use seasoning of any kind?

    (1)
  • Chasity C.

The meal was the worst food I think in ever had in my entire life!!! I understand that they can get away with overcharging ridiculous amounts for poor quality food because it is a touristy place, but almost everything on the menu was $20!!! Spattzel was absolutely horrid looking and taste was equally so. They should just take that off their menus all together! So bland, no salt at all, texture was like eating mushy silly putty, and even the sausages were mediocre at best. We were a group of 4 and not one person liked anything about their meal! Everything about the place was cheap and dingy. To charge those prices is outrageous. Then we get up to leave and their front door is jammed and the waiter said you have to pull it towards you first then turn then push out. That is a serious fire hazard. Eat anywhere but here!!!!

Had the sausage & brat platter and thought it was delicious. The service was great for is, no long wait and staff was very polite. Based on my experience I would eat here again.

AMBIANCE: 3.5 . SERVICE: 3.0. Timely. Would have been better if the staff was educated about the German food they serve. FOOD: 3.0. - Saurbraten: 2.5. I expected more tender. - Sausage lunch: 4.0. - Pork Schnitzel: 4.0 - Sauerkraut (served with all the preceding): 4.5.

Who doesn't enjoy their meat pounded? I think they call it schnitzel? Was good, food good. beer good. Stay Classy Leavenworth.

Best eatery in Leavenworth, the food is super tasty, and the service is great! The chicken salad is amazing and super tasty, even though I didn't have any beer, I hear they have good ones. Price is great, nothing super expensive and this place is great for groups!

  • Darby K.

I would really like to give this place ZERO stars. Horrible service! Waiting 20 minutes before we were even approached by a server.. no water.. and when she did come to our table, it was very awkward, like she was put out that she had to wait on us :( The food was not worth the long wait or the cold delayed service. Thinking it couldn't get any worse, some little prick brought us our bill saying hope everything on here is right, if not too bad.. Are you kidding me? Honestly I've gotten much better service at a fast food place. Such a shame. I will never eat here again and will give fair warning to anyone taking a trip to Leavenworth.

I lived in Vienna for a time and have spent considerable time in Germany...what sustained me during those adventures? Schnitzel of course! Over the holidays we traveled up in the snowy woods and mountains of the Northwest to visit to the town of Leavenworth, WA where there is a Bavarian/German village... and schnitzel a-plenty. The streets were busy, but this restaurant was not... and frankly, after our lunch, I understood that and why there was just the 3 star A-ok rating. The service was fine, it was clean, it's expensive, It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. Actually the red cabbage was my favorite part. The schnitzel was bland the rolls were a weird flavor...meh, all in all. I had the "German potatoes" as a side, which were basically breakfast roasted potatoes and bland as well. I ordered the potato salad to try too, and they forgot it. It's a large open room, and they have a pretty extensive menu-something for everyone I guess, including pizza, sandwiches, different German dishes, salads, and soups. I don't highly recommend it and since I've tried it, next time I'm in this delightful little tourist town, I'll try something else.

Came during Fourth of July, got right in at 5:30, no one else in. Good price for portion. Great tasting food. Nothing special for interiors. Kind of shows its age. Bathroom needs updating.

Went here and got amazing food and service! Everything we got was amazing and it all came with fresh baked bread! I had the schnitzel and my bf the sausage combo..we both cleared our plates and it was reasonably priced compared to other places we went in town

This was my first visit to Baren Haus and it was just ok. The restaurant wasn't busy, but the bar was jammed packed it was almost impossible to find a place to sit down. Also, I'd look elsewhere for a bathroom.

Six of us had a late dinner here on Saturday May 9th at 7 pm. We were all so pleasantly surprised to find they had live music! One man on guitar played classic acoustic rock, he was VERY good! Ok so for the food. Two of us ordered the schnitzel, two had spaghetti, one with marinara and one with mushroom sauce, a Reuben and a vegi sandwich. The schnitzel plates were a huge plate of food so you really need to come with a big appetite with this dish. The spaghetti were both very tasty. Rueben had plenty of meat and came with crispy fries. The vegi was HUGE piled high with all kinds of fresh vegetables, cream cheese and Swiss. We were promptly seated and served drinks. We were given menus right away and the waitress was courteous and knowledgeable answering questions about menu items. Such a great dining experience was had by all. And I can't say enough how very talented the musician that entertained us was, we almost didn't want to leave, and that was after sitting at our table for 15 minutes after we were done eating and had paid our bill. We will definitely return to this Leavenworth icon.

Might have been the waiters first day. Drinks took forever, bread was MIA, he spilled soda on my wife and butter on me. He did manage a 10% discount for our trouble. (seriously not enough). The food, on the other hand, was good. we had pizzas, burgers, and brats. German just wasn't appealing to us that day. I would go for the food but beware the inconsistent service.

Breakfast for the group of 4: Fluffy belgian waffles 5 stars "Best ever" was spoken. Baren Haus omelette is super tasty with the Kielbasa along with fresh homemade bread. Everyone who ordered eggs loved them and said they were cooked perfectly. Will return for sure!

We arrived in Leavenworth starving and the the rain was starting to pick up. We sought shelter in the nearest restaurant, which happened to be Baren Haus! I split the Jaegerschnitzl with my mom while my husband had the Reuben sandwich. I am not familiar with German food, but both my mom and I found the Jaegerschnitzl not too bad. It's a breaded pork cutlet covered in some sort of mushroom gravy. The portions are huge so be sure to share unless you are starving and have a huge appetite. I am not sure if this place is worth a return visit - I have to check out other Leavenworth establishments first to see what's else is out there!

  • Darren D.

The food here is better than what the restaurant is rated. If you're looking for southern German food that is off-the-boat authentic, then you'll be disappointed. HOWEVER, if you're looking for a good, somewhat authentic representation, you'll find it here. For those of you not into schnitzel, wurst, or rouladen, they have really good pizza and burgers too. Service is a bit inattentive and disorganized, but I left full and satisfied.

My two kids and I were really disappointed in this restaurant. It looks so awesome and cool, with its aged brick exterior and big front windows. And it appeared to always be bustling, so I figured it was a popular spot. Always a good sign, right? Well, not always, or so I learned. We placed our order with the server, who was quite friendly. My kids were famished (one would think they hadn't eaten in weeks.... LOL). Kid #2 noticed that parties who were seated long after we were had food in front of them - either bread or salads or both (kid #2 is quite the eagle-eyed surveyor, especially when it pertains to food). She was becoming more morose with each passing minute, with her glucose level dropping (not that she's diabetic, but she was getting super hungry. You parents out there will relate). After 20 minutes had elapsed, our server was going to various tables to inquire if anything was needed. Not to our table, however. I intercepted her, asking if perhaps the kitchen had forgotten about us? She said oh no, and I asked for some bread at least, as my kids were starving. She returned in 5 minutes with the bread. Another 10 minutes elapsed. She came to our table to say they were "just making the veggie sandwich now, so the meal will be out in a few". My younger kid was aghast. Just starting the sandwich now? After 40 minutes? (The veggie sandwich is only cream cheese and cold veggies). Wow. Finally, after 40 odd minutes, our meals came out, veggie sandwich and all. My pasta and kid #1's pasta was okay. Tasty, but nothing special. Kid #2's veggie sandwich was delicious (she said). The bread they gave us, when we asked, was the highlight of the meal. Just wonderful, light and fluffy, melt in your mouth, with whipped butter. Fabulous. If the food were consistent and spectacular, we'd put up with spotty service. But that's not the case here. There are too many other fine restaurants to go to in Leavenworth...

  • David L.

Went here with my girlfriend a while back. The service is pretty good, and the saurbraten is outstanding. Cabbage rolls are very good too. We went back the second day to eat again and it seemed just a tad inconsistent. I would definitely try them again.

We were here for dinner. The place was almost packed. It took quite some time for our food to arrive, definitely longer than 20 minutes. I had spaghetti, which is very similar to the Spaghetti Factory. It comes with a side of salad and a big bread. The choice of sauces is similar as well: marinara, myzithra cheese, meat sauce, and a creamy sauce. My bf had the Napolean Schnitzel, a pork schnitzel topped with swiss cheese and marinara sauce and potatoes and red cabbage as side dishes. Both dishes were very nice. Spaghetti was thoroughly cooked and had plenty of sauce on it. All that meat and cheese in the Schnitzel were very rich and filling. The beer menu is more limited here than other restaurants in the area. The portion size here is insanely huge! The schnitzel was impossible to finish in one sitting. I couldn't finish my spaghetti either. We felt bad for wasting so much food. The restaurant should offer half orders or reduce the portion size and the price.

  • Opal D.

The gravy on the schnitzel was good. Our party was extremely large (filled up 1/3 of the restaurant space) and their staff was very accommodating.

The exterior of the Baren Haus is awesome. If they served a full Bavarian menu, I'm sure we would have spent multiple meals trying out the place. But this spacious pub's top food item is the pizza. We ordered the Bavarian pizza. It was crusty and not in the good way. But since we were in "little Bavaria" we ordered the big beers. If you're stopping here for the beer, order the pizza. It'll help process the whole thing, plus it's cheaper to get the pizza to share with people instead of ordering individual meals. The servers here were quirky which is cool since some of the shop owners around are old and grumpy. Final note: If you pick restaurants based on bathrooms, keep looking. This place has a pretty crappy bathroom (no pun intended).

  • Lilani E.

We went here because it was busy in Leavenworth but not busy in here. The service was great. She was attentive when she needed to be and let us talk and enjoy our food when we didn't want to be bothered. The ambiance suits Leavenworth but the food was just not the best. The quantity and price is fair but the meat was overdone and the pasta was dry and did not have enough sauce. We did not leave upset if anything we were very happy (thanks to the VERY fair price of bottles of wine!) but I would recommend going to Leavenworth and making reservation to eat at other restaurants to avoid having to eat here.

I go to Leavenworth about once a year (I live in Seattle) and like to check out new places. The city is now known for excellent food. And so, I thought I'd check out Baren Haus as it has a great looking exterior - I could imagine it in Belltown area of Seattle. On a Saturday at 7 PM, it was fairly busy, though I think every single table had families with young kids/babies. This is not a place for a romantic meal (I was by myself and was not worried about romance, but I do like to eat a meal without babies screaming) due to all the kids. Regarding the food, I had the ribeye steak which was OK. It was a huge piece of meat, but nothing fabulous. The accompanying carrots were mushy (maybe they make them mushy so all the young kids/babies can eat them) and the baked potato was OK. Again, nothing spectacular. The house-made bread which came with the meal was nice - I nearly ate the whole mini loaf myself! For dessert, I had a piece of "German apple" cake - though it was unfortunately covered entirely in a thick non-authentic frosting which completely hid the apple taste. It's not a bad place to eat, though it's also not a great place to see. A middle of the road (yet $$$) restaurant in a town full of average restaurants. But hey - at least they have Icicle Brewery Bootjack IPA on tap! I think next time, I'd try a pizza.

This was our 2nd visit to the Baren Haus and it was as consistently good as the first time we visited. My husband and I shared a small pizza (great crispy bottom crust, but chewy as well) and a plate of cabbage rolls...yummmmmmm The atmosphere is a bit noisy on the weekends, but the wait staff was very attentive and we were served quickly. My only regret is that they seem to have a limited menu for German fare, possibly that's good, since you really can't go wrong trying their cabbage rolls and german fried potatoes.

Huge portions! The food was bland. Tasteless slop. The restaurant itself is cold. If Cracker Barrel is your favorite restaurant then you will not be disappointed. Eat here. Me, I'm not big on cafeteria food. Disappointed. The quality of food did not correlate with the price. I give an extra star because the server offered to take the dish away and not charge us. So nothing to lose if you don't like it. Girlfriend writes: Cafeteria food tourist trap. Those who enjoy good food, stay away from the Baren Has. They played at least two Abba songs. On a positive note, the portions were generous, the staff responded without opposition to my complaint and didn't charge us for the food, and the beer was good.

Our first food experience in Leavenworth and we came here late Friday evening during MaiFest. Sausage meal was pretty dry and the spaghetti for kids were cold. Didn't expect the low quality of food compared to what you paid for. We couldn't even get a good meal recommendation when we ask the waitress. Worst of all, the door was kept open all along which invited all the flying bugs in the street. Recommend to walk around for something better of grab one of those free maps of Leavenworth and call the other restaurants before you decide to check this place out.

Had dinner on a Saturday evening and it wasn't a busy weekend in Leavenworth so we were seated quickly. Our waitress was friendly, pleasant and prompt. If you are looking for a great variety of beer and wine, this isn't the place for you but my sis and I aren't much for that so we were satisfied with the offerings. I didn't see any appetizers on the menu but we both ordered traditional German dinners and were then brought a warm loaf of tender fresh bread. Dinner came timely also, my cabbage rolls were excellent! Had the spaetzle on the side and am not much of a connoisseur so I can't give that an adequate rating, the sauerkraut was good. My sister's beef dish was good, not great, the portions of everything were decent sized.

We ate at Baren Haus on March 21, 2014. My niece had brats and spatzle. Not so good. Her husband had sauerbraten. The flavor was different than he expected. My husband and I split the rib-eye steak dinner. He ordered medium rare. My husband said he had seen steer hurt worse than that and lived. I had to send my part back for more cooking. It still was full of gristle with very little that was edible. The roof was leaking and there were buckets of water standing all around. Cold! Karissa was our server and did all she could to improve our experience. Kudos, Karissa!

I've only been here twice over the years, but both times I was satisfied. I've only had the pizza here, but it has always been good. They had no issues catering to our large group and didn't even raise a huff when a couple of group members came in very close to closing time, on Christmas Eve. The food was tasty, the service was good, and the overall experience was pleasant. I'm fairly sure I'll keep going back occasionally.

Nice staff... Mediocre food. The fries were probably the biggest letdown. Not the German fries that I had hopes for--it seemed like they went through an Arby's drive through, picked up some fries and then drove back to the restaurant and dumped them in some room temperature oil for a few hours.

Cute and cozy but crowded and the food wasn't very memorable. They did a good job in terms of managing my expectations for our 40 minute wait which turned out to be only 25. I think I'll try someplace else next time.

Was there on a Friday lunchtime, and was ok. Had the schnitzel with spatzle, sauerkraut and red cabbage - two pieces of schnitzel were served up. Top piece was ok - lower piece was a little oily. Red cabbage was delicious. Service was good though and orders were managed quickly. In summary, good enough, but not enough to set itself apart from the other restaurants and probably wouldn't go back.

Do not be fooled by the amazing smells coming from the building, that is the wind blowing the smell up from the restaurant South - right next store. It is very deceptive. You will love Baren Haus, if you enjoyed the food served at your Junior High cafeteria. Their tomato sauce is the same sauce used in Spaghettios. This place is a joke, every local that we mentioned we went here, just rolled their eyes. The only reason they get 2 stars instead of one is that the wine was a sweet deal. We bought a bottle of Hob Nob Merlot for $15!. The funny part was the waitress had opened the bottle by stabbing through the foil wrap with the opener and never peeled off the foil, she brought the bottle to our table with the shards of foil sticking up and set it on the table with the glasses for us to pour ourselves. For a spendy restaurant the service was not up to par.

Pros: - Nice interior with high ceilings and red brick walls, obviously a historic building and I like the way they've preserved that original feel rather than plastering over the walls as many other places have done - Great location right on the main street - Big booths to fit your whole family Cons: - The gigantic mural in the back cheapens the otherwise nice interior. Tacky! - The schnitzel sucked. The flavor was just lacking, though the texture was good: firm without being tough. The jaeger sauce was starchy and watery simultaneously, and flavorless. A can of Campbell's mushroom soup would have been tastier and higher quality. Disappointing! - Completely overdid the amount of cloves in the red cabbage. Overpowering! - Someone else in my group had the pizza, which was quite large for a 'small' size but looked too thick and over sauced for my liking. Conclusion: As something of a schnitzel aficionado who has consumed hundreds if not over 1,000 schnitzels over the year, I can honestly say this was the worst schnitzel I ever ate. And in a 'German' town no less! Disappointing, go elsewhere.

We'd walked past a few times and noticed it was usually busy, so decided to duck in for dinner one evening when it wasn't too packed. The first thing that hit us was the overwhelming smell of dirty mop/musty socks/you get the idea. Ick. But, we were hungry and resolute, and so decided to stay. We were promptly seated and offered menus, which described how much pride was taken in the homemade ingredients. Encouraged, I ordered the reuben, expecting a couple slabs of delicious meat slathered in sauerkraut and dressing. What arrived appeared to be a few packages of Carl Buddig lunch meat with a thin smear of 1000 Island. The only saving grace was the bread and sauerkraut, both very good. The German potato salad on the side was cold, how weird! My husband had the schnitzel sandwich and described it as rubbery. The service was good, but this is definitely an overflow restaurant. Don't bother.

Love the building and the high ceilings. This is the 2nd time we've eaten here, both for dinner. Food and service are both great. The red cabbage and sauerkraut are some of the best I've had. Kids menu was nice for our youngest.

I had the New York and it was good. Another person had the pizza and it was GREAT. Dessert was just ok. The service was good despite it being a busy time of year. Our party of 8 had a lot of fun here. We will definitely come here again for our annual Christmas trip to Leavenworth.

I really wanted to like this place. We were in search for some good food that wasn't a braut and beer. So we chose this place because we thought the menu looked pretty good and was a cute little place. Our server was very sweet and helpful. Unfortunately that was pretty much the only good thing about the place. I wanted to laugh when I read Melissa's review, because I pretty much felt the same way. I had the Reuben. It was HUGE, and lacking in flavor. I too felt like I was at Arby's with the boring sandwich and curly fries. It was way overpriced for what we got. This place has potential they just need to step it up a bit.

Wow, this place is horrible. After sitting down and ordering beers, we found out that they were out of two of the main dishes on the menu. Understandable, but disappointing. We got some bread, but no silverware...the waiter said he would bring some soon. We ordered, and started to wait for our food. And waited... We ended up eating our bread without silverware. More than half an hour later, half of our food came. But still no silverware. The waiter was quite nice, but he said that they were completely out of silverware. So we sat there, waiting. The rest of our food came about ten minutes later, and silverware another five minutes after that. The horrible delays and silverware could be written off as a bad experience. But now that we had silverware, we got to eat. The food was some of the most bland, horribly presented, over salted, over cooked but under reheated, miserable excuse for a dinner that I have ever had. The waiter tried to get the owners daughter to come talk to us, but she refused because "nothing was wrong." The bill for four of us came to $72 and I would have rather eaten week old McDonald's leftovers than the meal we had here. Just don't go. Save yourself.

This is the only German food I've had so I don't know how to rate it. I really liked it. The bread was okay. A little dry. The service was pretty good. The girl who served us was sweet but kind of shy seeming. She was very helpful when I was asking her where to get some good Danish.

I find myself visiting Leavenworth, WA often not because it's an awesome experience of a Bavarian village but because of Baren Haus; they have the most amazing food, I find myself craving their snitzel I only wish they were in Puget sound region so I could visit more often, a must try if you ever find yourself in Leavenworth trying to decide what to eat..

We had dinner there on September 26th 2013 and enjoyed our meal. The food was better than we expected and the service was outstanding. would eat there again if we ever get back to Leavenworth.

Reuben was a house speciality. But the meat was loaded with fat. Beer was good; but no IPA. Gyro looked good.

Came here for lunch with my boyfriend. He had a sausage platter and I had a schnitzel plate. The texture of my schnitzel was great-- crispy, hot, tender pork. Kind of like Asian katsu. The vegetables were mediocre (red cabbage is a little too sweet, sauerkraut is really tart). My boyfriend's sausage was really dry and tough; not sure if that's what it should be like, but I didn't like it (lol....). Service is slow but friendly. Atmosphere is moody and dark (in a positive way).

I honestly should of listened to the yelp reviews and gone somewhere else, however it was the closest restaraunt and my party was hungry so we settled for here. The quality of the ingredients used in the dishes were lack luster. I had the schnitzel and it was ok. The interior of the restaurant is cozy and neat though. All in all just listen to the good people of yelp and not the impatience of an empty tummy.

I was leary at first as this place had 3 stars overall, but we couldn't find the new Ducks and Drakes location so we settled for the Baren Haus as it looked cute, historic and decent. We patiently waited no problem and were asked if we wouldn't mind sharing a table with another couple. We didn't mind, it was fine and kind of fun to meet another couple briefly. We ordered the Reuben and the grilled chicken sandwich, along with a pike place beer (disappointing to see it on the menu as we are from downtown Seattle,) and a darker draft (don't remember the name.) My chicken sandwich was slightly undercooked! And came on homemade bread, with nothing except onion, tomato and pickle!! No special sauce or anything!! I could have made it at home for cheaper and better!! The fries were standard Curley fries exactly like Arby's. My fiancé's Reuben was bland, lackluster and lacking in flavor which is really rare for a Reuben!! The beers were the only good part of our meals. I loved the darker brew I got, which was smooth and rich in flavor. The Pike was good too, but we could have easily had that at home. Overall unimpressed. But then again Leavenworth's food will always leave you disappointed. So far no good places to eat.

The food was really good, had their Jaegershnitzel. Such a big portion I couldn't finish it all, but I really wanted too. Fresh baked bread with their garlic herb butter was AMAZING! The only complaint we had was our server. He was really nice and friendly, but a little inappropriate. Jokingly acted like he was drinking our drinks, then tried guilting us into giving him a big tip. I'd go back though, the food was worth it.

Recommend the apple bratwurst or the stuffed cabbage rolls. They serve a pickled type of fruit, it may be plum or something but it's similar to cranberry and it pairs well with the food. Hearty proportions.

We went to this place for a late lunch. We ordered a German roasted beef + gravey entree with baked potato (can't remember the German name for it) and a Lasangnea which came with a salad. While the Lasangnea & salad was not bad, they definite don't taste like the typical salad or lasangnea -- slightly on the sour side both the meat sauce & the salad dressing. The roasted beef plate though, was no good at all for a supposely typical German dish. The meat was bland and not as tender as it claims to be. The gravey was just ok. The potato is definitely too dry. Oh the table bread was pretty lame -- soggy and bland. It just felt like that nothing was really fresh there. Although, the service wasn't bad, we were there to eat... So mehh, we'll skip this place the next time.

We were just there a few minutes ago but left after being seated. No one came to take our order. We were a group of 5 adults. A young couple's order was taken first even though they got there after we did. We asked the server what was going on why our order hasn't been taken and the male server said "we take our orders here differently". Meaning what? With that, we left. Bad service. Rude. This doesn't even deserve one star.

Wait staff were very nice but clearly the place was understaffed. Food was okay. My schnitzel sandwich was okay but my husband loved his curry weurst. French fries were great. Fresh bread that came with my husbands platter was wonderful.

Disappointing. Sauerbraten was tough, bread and spaetzle were stale. My wife's spaghetti sauce tasted like Spaghetti-o's...another review said the same! We ate about three bites and gave up. Should have read the earlier reviews first! Service was decent, we were offered 10% (???) off for not eating our meal. Forty five bucks I'll never see again. Plenty of other options in Leavenworth.

Reuben pizza... Sounds odd, yes... But wow it's good! Large (15") is 19.95 but is very tasty. Pleasant staff and great service!

Had a great lunch here today. Wife and I split a combination plate (bratwurst and curry wurst). The wurst's were great, the beer was awesome. Would love to be here during Oktoberfest.

First of all, they get 1 star just for being the only restaurant that stayed open to feed the tourists at 9 pm on a Saturday when the rest of Leavenworth closed early for the 4th of July. The food was definitely 5 stars too. I ordered the prawns, which were plump and soaking in the most delicious sauce. My husband had the beef rouladen and was delighted. I don't even like red meat but his beef was so tender and flaky that I stole several bites off his plate. We didn't try the schnitzel but it came in at least 7 different varieties so there's a flavor for everyone. A few tips, for the side skip the standard fries or baked potato and try the spaetzle, a unique german potato dish that turned out to be yummy and buttery. The pitcher of beer is a much better deal than by the glass, just watch out for the price on the receipt. They charged us 75 cents more than the price on the menu but when we caught the mistake they said the menus needed to be updated and refunded the difference. We ended up here as a last resort since everything else was closed, but we were delighted to discover a very nice restaurant that we'll seek out the next time we're in Leavenworth.

went there last weekend with the kids for lunch. kids were starved and it looked like we could get food fast. kitchen was fast and food was okay. being vegetarian, there weren't many choices on the menu, so had the veggie sandwich. it was loaded with veggies and all very good. the one strange thing was that it was served with a side of german potato salad that had meat in it, rather odd, but overall food was good.
