Sue and Carl (from the Otter's Pond B&B) recommended this place to us because the Doe Bay Cafe was already full. My husband wanted to eat some fish and I was graving for some vegetarian food. We had a really nice dinner and our server Laurie was very pleasant. Nice harbour views and a big enough menu to make a choice from. Meat, fish and vegetarian and what I understood, most of it local, fresh and organic if possible. We both started with a French union soup. For my love follewed by one of the specials of the day, halibut with risotto and for me the quinoa with grilled vegetables and a balsamic drizzle. The onion soup was hot and ok. Not very special. The halibut was very nice (I tasted it). The quinoa and vegetables were lacking a little bit of a bite. Don't really know how to put it in English, but I was not very spicy or special. Preparing a tasteful vegetarian meal shouldn't be that difficult. Some more salt of some other spices, or perhaps somewhat of a juice or jus can make a difference. It was now all a little bit to plain. And besides that, the vegetables we're not grilled, but more like steamed. All together, please, a litlle bit more attention to flavouring vegetarian dishes can make the difference. It is not that hard, just enjoy preparing them. We shared that apple-upside-down cake with pecans and pecan-toffee ice-cream. We really enjoyed that. Just like we enjoyed Laurie's jokes about how strange it is to ask for Splenda in you're coffee and ordering such a dessert. Which had probably 1000 kC. Laurie also really tried to sort out the best herbal tea for me. She asked me what I liked (something with hibiscus or rosehip) and returned with a fresh blend that was very nice. And the wines, I started with the Viognier from WA followed by a special Chardonnay that was recommended with the halibut. The Viognier wasn't very special. A little bit plain. We both preferred the Chardonnay. And why just 3 stars and not more? Because of the bill. Knowing we're on a island, having great harbour view and knowing much of the food is organic or locally produced we tought the check was too high. So it's all about value for money. Raise the standards, of lower the checks......... Service was great. We even hope we left enough gratuity (we're Dutch ;)). (Note: I'm not a native speaker so please excuse alle grammar and spelling mistakes.)

We finally woke up early enough and with the energy to go out to breakfast. We have not had the opportunity to eat at the New Leaf in many years. We are so glad we did. I enjoyed the traditional eggs Benedict, my husband had the biscuits & gravy, and our daughter had the Monte Cristo. The local goods coffee was nice and strong and the Fresh squeezed o.j. was excellent!! Perfect poached eggs, the ham was so tasty! the hollandaise sauce was yummy!! My daughter could only get through half of the Monte Cristo, taking the other half home. She better hide it from me!! The biscuits & gravy was massive, two full biscuits with perfectly cooked over medium eggs, house made sausage chunks and a nice amount of gravy. We are lucky to live on Orcas, so we can partake in all it's restaurants. When on Orcas, make sure you stop in for breakfast. Friendly staff and attentive service. Thank you New Leaf!!

A meal on the front porch of this quaint and vintage hotel is a great introduction or finale to a weekend of island relaxation! There is a road in between you and the amazing view of the ocean, but other than that it's easy to forget about civilization. The food is excellent, a bit rich for my taste but that's my problem, not theirs. We all agreed that the duck confit was the winning meal at our table but it was a close call. The service was perfect. On the way to the restroom I walked past the big, gorgeous, wooden bar, and definitely want to come back sometime and sit there!

Great local spot on Orcas Island. We were here with a local and sat at the "community table" in the back. What a treat! Who lives in Orcas Island Island and what do they do? Well, i know. The food was delicious and locally sourced. The local oysters are off the charts served with a house made mignonette. My buddy had the lamb steak, i had the roasted cauliflower, hubby had fish, of course. Everything was great. The service was attentive and not overly so. A must do if you are on the island.

We went for breakfast on a relatively light Saturday in town. Location & view are delightful - the people & staff are too! I had the ham & smoked cheese scramble with roasted potatoes, but was not overwhelmed. The potatoes were large chunks that could've been cooked longer and had a more appealing crispy exterior. The ham was also in large chunks, and though cooked seemed to lack a certain presence or panache. I suppose the ham was a soft picnic variety, which is not my favorite. Cut smaller, to distribute the flavors, or sautéed for a little browning would have helped. I should've had the forethought to request a bacon substitute. My wife had the wild mushroom and spinach omelette. It needed salt and also could've had a deeper and more interesting flavor. Same potatoes as mine, with the same comment as above. I would not avoid the place, but I would be more inquisitive about ingredients and preparation where I to go again. Also, I suspect their dinner might be a much more interesting affair than breakfast.

Busy! They fit us in the bar and great experience. Fab wine (try the Lullaby red blend) and the steak I had was perfect. Hubs is on no carb so had less options, went for clams and French onion soup but tried to remove the crouton. Very good Caesar salad too. All in all I would eat here again. I recommend reservations and the desserts I saw were fab, but not part of our diet, insert sad smiley here!

Gorgeous views in a quaint hotel where you get service that's reminiscent of bygone days. Didn't mean to sound like an embittered 80 year old man, but the friendly folks at the front desk really do make you feel welcome in a way that doesn't often happen in the service industry anymore! The New Leaf Cafe sits at the front of the hotel. Great variety on the menu, and the dishes were very good. Started with a chipotle bloody mary - two thumbs up. Had the garden benedict for breakfast - all the flavors were really good, but the potatoes in particular were really well-seasoned and brought the dish together. Great service - got our orders perfectly right, and made sure our coffee stayed fresh. This plays checks off on all the requirements of a good breakfast place out on the islands. I'll definitely come back!

I'm so glad I checked with Yelp during my Orcas Island stay and found this place. At first glance, you might think it's odd that this restaurant in a hotel could be so good, but the food is actually very good! My boyfriend and I ate here for dinner; we ordered clams as an appetizer and it was delicious! The price is kind of high, but hey you're on vacation so why not enjoy yourself? The staff was attentive and friendly as well.

French onion soup could be a meal in itself. The broth is to die for, the amount of gooey cheese is delightful, and the onions are so delicate that they melt away. Tried the eggs benedict for breakfast the next day. The hollandaise sauce was buttery good. The butter syrup for the waffles was a blend of almost caramel/buttery goodness as well. Will be back.

After reading the reviews, I knew this was going to be the perfect place for our last meal before heading out of the island. As you can tell, it did not disappoint. Conveniently situated right next to the water, the patio view was amazing. We beat he lunch crowd and got seated instantly. service was steady and the waitress checked in pretty often. The food was so great - it's like they have mastered a few solid things and continue to do it well. I love how everything was made fresh in house, including the smoked salmon on my eggs benedict. I usually avoid the smoked salmon in many breakfast places because they end up being overwhelmingly salty, but not this place. The potatoes were perfectly seasoned, as was everything else. Loved the duck confeit hash as well. And did I mention how delicious their raspberry jam was?? Ooooff! I think I can sum it up with what my husband said in the end: "We should have been eating breakfast here every day." Will definitely return and bring back more people to this place!

The food was great however I am not a fan of automatic gratuity for parties of five or more, especially when our fifth person was 3 years old and only ordered a plate of fries. I should be able to decide how much to give. Luckily our waitress was great though! I had the cauliflower steak with cheese curds and loved every bit of it. The steamed clams were amazing and the beef filets, halibut and salmon we ordered were all top notch. Definitely not an inexpensive place though. $12 for their version of a Moscow Mule was steep. Loved the atmosphere and location though.

Wow. We loved everything about New Leaf. We went for brunch and had a fantastic experience from start to finish. The waitress was friendly, food was delivered fast, everything was fresh and tasty, the decor is bright with a nice balance of traditional and modern touches. The views are outstanding. Just a great place in general. We will be back!

New Leaf Café is located within short walking distance from the condo my boyfriend and I are leasing during our stay on Orcas Island; I was excited to give it a breakfast try. We got there right when it opened this morning and the staff members we encountered were polite and friendly. We chose to eat outside on their covered patio seating area; it was lovely, as long as there were no passing cars. I ordered the "two eggs your way" breakfast, which consists of two eggs, sausage or ham steak, potatoes and brioche toast with jam. The breakfast looked and tasted like a diner breakfast - the eggs didn't seem fresh, more like powdered eggs. The ham steak was very skimpy and the brioche toast was forgettable. I chose not to have potatoes, so I can't comment on how those are.

Excellent food, and very friendly staff. My husband had the smoked salmon eggs Benedict. He said it was the best he's ever had. I had the smoked ham and egg scramble. It was wonderfully done with big chunks of smoked ham and caramelized onions. I also had the pepper infused bloody Mary that was super yummy!

I am truly on-the-fence about my experience at New Leaf in June, so I will reserve selecting how many stars it gets until the end of my review. Admittedly, this is rather anti-climactic for all of you since you have already seen the result of my self-deliberation; but it makes me feel like a real Yelp-maverick right now. Food: I ordered the fresh Halibut with a Yukon Gold Mash for dinner, while those who I dined with all ordered the scallops. In addition, we ordered the Truffle Fries and the Crab Cakes with a pear and ginger beurre blanc and habanero cream. My meal was good -- not great -- just good. The fish was obviously fresh, it was seasoned alright, and was cooked so that it was still moist and tender. For me, it was missing something extra that would have sent it over-the-top. It was a 'special', and it was supposed to have some sort of sauce on it, but it didn't have one that I could identify on my palette. It was good, but I probably could have made something better at home. The scallops got mixed reviews. Some loved them, and some thought they were good. I did not try them, but they were wildly inconsistent. Some had a nice crust on them, others did not. That is disappointing. Most likely, they overcrowded the sautee pan they were cooking the three scallop dinners my table ordered. So the ones on the outside did not develop the appropriate sear, while the ones on the interior did. That is disappointing. Is that what happened? I don't know, but as an experienced chef, it sounds likely. The star of the meal were the crab cakes and fries. With how delicious those appetizers were, I had much higher hopes for my entree. The Pear and ginger beurre blanc with habanero cream introduced me to a whole different flavor profile regarding crab cakes. I give those 5 stars for sure. The Truffle Fries were also very tasty. Crispy, well-seasoned, and appropriately dressed. I have had some Truffle fries in the past that were just over-truffled (if that makes sense). Dessert was another course with mixed reviews. The creme brulee was a letdown -- a little bland; but the chocolate thing (don't remember what it was) had an incredibly rich and decadent flavor. Food: 4 / 5 (3 / 5 + 1 bonus point for a crab cake that blew me away) Service: This was definitely a high-point for New Leaf Cafe. Our Server was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, prompt, and pleasant. I literally could not have asked for a more professional server. Service: 5 / 5 Atmosphere: It is situated in a beautiful spot, that overlooks the water, and is nestled right on the outside of the main village. It is clean, quaint, with many windows to let-in a lot of natural light, and it feels very classy. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. Atmosphere: 5 / 5 Price: For what we got, I cannot say that I felt like I got my money's worth. In fact, I was a little disappointed in the price compared to the overall quality of the meal. We definitely made-out well on the Fries and the crab cakes, as well as the chocolate dessert. Everything else was probably not quite up to the standard I would expect for the premium price that New Leaf charges. This was a little disappointing. Price: 3 / 5 Final Thoughts: Honestly, New Leaf Cafe teeters on a 3 and 4 in my mind, but the numbers never lie, and there is no option for me to round up or down since it is a hard 4 / 5. I suppose if I were to classify this meal, it would go something like this: A beautiful setting and friendly service make-up for food that although is good, is somehow lacking the delightful and memorable flavor that the menu seems to allude to.

Absolutely horrible service and food! Waitress Jenna managed to mess up a simple order for 2 (!) people in three different ways (!!!) it completely ruined our experience! There was only one special request: substitute the fries for risotto in the chicken dish. I end up getting the fries anyway, the chicken i got had about 2 bites of meat in it and she charged me for a completely different chicken (a higher priced meal than what i ordered) When i pointed that out she decided to argue with me, although it clearly was her mistake. Then instead of bringing a chocolate cake she gave us vanilla ice cream. The food was nowhere near good as well.

The New Leaf Cafe was one of the few restaurants open for dinner on Monday, May 4th, and we were lucky for that reason because we may not have dined there if the restaurant in our Inn had been open instead. The halibut was done to perfection. It came with pine nuts and a green sauce that complimented it perfectly. Unfortunately, I don't remember the type of sauce as described on the menu. If the restaurant reads this review I hope they will kindly provide that info along with the ingredients/recipe. I'd love to try and recreate it. The baby kale salad was out of this world. As a vendor I've sold many varieties of greens at my local farmer's market yet I've never tasted baby kale as fresh and delicate as those served in this salad. The salad was simple with a delicious dressing that wasn't overpowering. A magnificent full arc rainbow that appeared before our food arrived was an added treat. Half the restaurant ran outside to take photos. All the tables have a view of the water and the service was good. Don't miss an opportunity to have dinner here while you're on Orcas Island.

Fantastic dinner and great service! After feeling very unwelcome at several restaurants on Orcas Island, The folks here really made up for it and took great care of us while on our honeymoon. Great patio to eat on as well. Only suggestion is that they have outdoor heaters so that you don't have to go inside or get a blanket when it gets cooler in the evenings. Other than that it was fantastic and we look forward to returning!!!

This restaurant is situated across from the sound, and inside The Outlook Hotel. Everything we had was DELICIOUS and perfectly done! We started with bay clams in butter and garlic. We tasted the sweet freshness of the tender clams. I ordered the Lardo Salad with Hempler bacon. It had extremely generous amount of mild blue cheese, chewy small chunks of bacon, and perfectly poached egg on top, with a warm vinaigrette dressing. It also had a chewy goodness chunks of sourdough (?) croutons. My husband had the cauliflower steak that he described as a cross between parmagine and puttanesca. I had the flourless chocolate cake with caramel and chocolate sauce as well as sea salt. The sea salt really topped it for me. Awesome! Every staff was attentive, pleasant and welcoming: from the two staff who kept our water glass full, to our waitress and a neighboring waitress who helped out to take our orders. This was a pleasantly surprisingly wonderful experience!

One of the best breakfasts of my life. On Orcas Island, of all places. If you've seen the movie, Practical Magic, you probably know that it was filmed out here in the good ol' PNW. And even though New Leaf is not on Whidbey Island where it was filmed, the restaurant looks like it fell out of the cute, pristine white town that is portrayed in the movie. Back to breakfast. I had the Duck Confit hash and it was FULL of huge pieces of duck. The potatoes were flawless and in such a perfect harmonious ratio to the duck, I nearly wept. The killer piece de resistance was the brioche toast that is served with it! I can't remember the last time I had brioche in toast-form that was so good. It dissolved in your mouth right away, and didn't need butter. And what good is any kind of brioche without strawberry freezer jam? I ate the whole jar. My friend had a scramble with cheese, and after she tasted my breakfast, she picked at her plate and stared forlornly at me. And though it pained me, I shared one more bite with her--and promptly cut her off. The service was stellar, the bright sun peeked into every nook and cranny of the restaurant. Their HH is famous here, so we came back the same night and I had the Duck Confit mac and cheese with a beer. GHERK! It was so delicious, I slowed down so I could savor each bite! Make this one of your stops on Orcas. It's on my favorites list!

Delicious food in a lovely setting across from the water. The waitstaff was nice, knowledgeable and attentive. Crab cakes, salmon, halibut and chicken were all excellent. Nice wine list with fair prices. Great evening.

Other than the three privileged girls droning on about how hard it would be to be poor, breakfast say amazing. In sitting right on the counter overlooking the water. Awesome coffee. Duck Hash. Laid back staff. Yeah. Eat here. Laughing so hard. Don't listen in on other conversations. "when I go back to school at Michigan everyone is so fat. It's just different there."

Absolutely fantastic dining experience at New Leaf. We found ourselves hungry for brunch and were not disappointed. The husband and I shared the smoked salmon benedict and banana pecan flapjacks. Both delicious, well priced and sized. The service was attentive and helpful, and ambience a perfect balance of artsy with views of the bay. We'll be back for our next visit to Orcas!

Very cool place. Excellent menu and high quality ingredients. Our server was extraordinary and I noticed that the others helping the other tables were great. The execution was impressive. They have a large party of 12 finishing up when we got there and they knew how to keep that table attended to without impacting the other diners surrounding it. The food was fantastic. Really pleasing environment, upscale but comfortable. Nice view of the water too.

Believe the hype. Not just great for Orcas, the execution of this menu would be great in Chicago, New York, or LA, but without any of the pretense. The service was fantastic. We started with a half-dozen oysters and cocktails. Then we shared the crab cakes and the lardon salad (which was outstanding). Entrees were the scallops and the grilled lamb. Enjoyed the meal with a 2011 Merlot from Januik. Dessert was the flourless chocolate cake (also great, but would have been improved with homemade whipped cream instead of the canned stuff) with a little port. We'll be back.

Five stars for the food, three for service. We ordered primarily off the bistro menu and everything was excellent. Particularly noteworthy were the mussels and crab cakes which were out of this world. The pasta with blue cheese was excellent as were the clams and lamb burger. We could have kept eating till we exploded like a Monty Python sketch. One irritation was the service. Our requests were not met quickly, and for some reason it was difficult to get our hands on a menu. They had some interesting cocktails, and since I didn't commit them all to memory I asked for a menu, this took a while to get. When we first arrived we never even received the fresh seafood menu which bothered me. I ended up ordering oysters at the end of our meal since I didn't realize they had them till I saw them at another table. I would definitely come back since I love such outstanding seafood, but I will make sure to hang on to every menu they have.

What a view! We came on their last day of service for the season and it was busy but we were seated quickly. The service was friendly and while not quite prompt, definitely sufficient for vacation time. I had the traditional eggs benedict and the eggs were poached perfectly. The hollandaise was plentiful (a bit too much, really) and yummy but I felt it could have used a touch more lemon. The new potatoes were crisp and flavorful. My partner had the monte cristo which he thoroughly enjoyed. He said their batter technique was perfect. They serve it with a very minuscule side of jam (maybe a tablespoon) but not a problem to ask for more for the big dipper he is. The plating was beautiful as well! A great option for breakfast and brunch and we will return next time we visit Orcas.

We were here for breakfast on a Saturday. Had the cornmeal flapjacks with all of the fixings, as well as the mushroom omelette. Both were out of this world. I'm knocking off a star because they don't serve espresso, which is almost a must for a brunch spot. I would definitely be a regular here if I lived on the island.

We had dinner at New Leaf Café and had the most amazing experience and meal. We made a reservation for 7:30 on a Tuesday evening and when we arrived we were seated promptly. Our table was right next to the window, so we were able to enjoy a wonderful view of the sea as we feasted on some delicious food. There were four of us, so I got to try a lot of what was on the menu! To start, we ordered Octopus carpaccio appetizer ($14) and the Shoestring truffle fries ($8). The octopus was so interesting, cut super thin and drizzled with lemon and olive oil. Other people in my party ate the octopus on top of the freshly baked bread (so warm and tasty) that was brought to the table, but I enjoyed it on its own, so that I could taste each flavor more. The truffle fries were also amazing, and the big bowl of them was devoured in about two minutes. All the salads sounded wonderful, and we decided on the Warm goat cheese ($14), the Lardon salad ($14), and the Caesar ($10). The goat cheese salad was delicious, with rich, creamy goat cheese covered in glazed pistachios. The pomegranate balsamic drizzle on that was so rich and flavorful, and tied the whole salad together quite well. However, for me the winner was the Lardon salad, which had bacon, garlic croutons, gorgonzola cheese, a Dijon-sherry vinaigrette, and a poached egg. Wow! Definitely not a light salad, but every bite was so delicious I couldn't stop eating it until every last bit was gone, even though I was already getting full. I didn't even think I liked gorgonzola, but something about the mix of flavors was totally perfect. The Caesar salad was a bit heavy on the dressing for my liking, but others in my party thought it was very good. For the main course I decided to split the house smoked Sockeye salmon pasta ($22). I'm glad I did because the portions they brought out were quite generous, and neither I nor the person I was splitting with could finish, so we took it home with us. The scotch cream and parmesan on the pasta made for a rich dish with great flavor. For dessert we all split the dessert special, a Washington Aprium cobbler ($12). I guess an aprium is 3 parts apricot to one part plum. The cobbler was served warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on top. It was quite delicious, although we all wanted more of the crumble that was on top by the time we made it to the bottom. All in all, my meal at New Leaf was the best I've had in a very long time. I left feeling stuffed and so happy with everything we had tried. Our server, Lori, was very sweet, bubbly and attentive. I wish we could go back to New Leaf Café again on this vacation, but it will definitely be incentive for me to come back to Orcas! Oh, and if you have time, you have to walk around the ground of the Outlook Inn, where the restaurant is located. In back there is a pond and a charming little chapel--such a nice place to be!

Amazing food, no doubt! We had dinner here twice! The food was so good and great, I ended up leaving my purse by accident! (stomach too happy). But they are so professional and left my purse at the Outlook Inn's front desk. Will come back here again!

Had the early breakfast it was great. I was about to give up waffles altogether because I had terrible waffles here in WA. But here it was just right the best i had yet. Also the customer service was awesome thank you for that. The food came out good timing just wonderful all around. Next time we are there I will try the lunch & dinner. We were here Saturday morning 3/22/14

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Outlook Inn around this time last year, and we ate most of our meals at the New Leaf Cafe. Why? Because the service and the food were incredible. We celebrated our anniversary at the New Leaf the first night we were there, and I had the most amazing scallop dish, and after that meal, I was forever converted to being a fan of scallops! However, in the past year since I've eaten at the New Leaf, I haven't had scallops nearly as good as what I had at the New Leaf. I've eaten at several highly regarded seafood restaurants in Seattle, and the New Leaf is still the restaurant to beat! My boyfriend tried the duck confit, and to this day, he still raves about it. The breakfast was phenomenal, and we were able to purchase the coffee blend that was used at the New Leaf to take home with us. I was reminded of my New Leaf experience for another two weeks as I savored my coffee each morning for breakfast. We are returning to the San Juan Islands in a couple of weeks for our anniversary, and while we are staying on a different island, we are hoping to return to the New Leaf for a meal. It will be out of the way for us, but definitely worth it!

Near perfect. Staying at the Outlook Inn (this is their restaurant). Breakfast mostly a variety of omelets and benedicts, which are our usual choices. Lots of natural light, food was great, service was good. Only imperfection was the conversation I had with the drinks hostess/server about the sweetness of the chai & soymilk. I'm sensitive to sugar+caffeine and try to avoid sugar with black tea (e.g., chai). I had a hard time getting her to understand my question, then she replied, "not usually," which is wrong -- most places have pre-sweet chai plus sweet soymilk (vanilla). End result, I ordered it knowing it was likely sweet but wanted to have chai. And yes, it was sweet, though I did not ask if it was the soy or the chai; didn't want to go through that again. I don't want to sound nit-picky, but this would've been important for someone with diabetes or on a diet or whatever, but it's mostly because it's bad service when the server would rather guess than find out the answer.

For those that have never been to Orcas, be advised that there just aren't that many places to eat. In fact, it is the solitude and quiet of Orcas that Hubby and I most come here seeking. The fact that we were able to find such a sweet gem in its midst was remarkable to us. And, let's face it, I may like to play at being a jungle girl for my outdoor loving, Eagle Scout, but I am all city girl and I need the occasional city accouterments. Fortunately, the New Leaf give me just that! The meal and the service earned a definitive 4 stars, but the 5th star is for the incredible patio with the amazing views. Such a romantic evening for the Hubby and I, we felt like we were dating again! The water was so still in the harbor and the weather on the island is perfect for outdoor dining. The food is very good. Hubby does not eat fish. Ever. But, luckily, that was not a problem here. They had a terrific steak that was perfectly cooked medium rare as he likes it. This left me to enjoy halibut. I would suggest you try it because it was wonderful. I wasn't sure if I would like hailbut - being a warm water fish girl who loves grouper, snapper and dorado - but I did like it. Very much. We did not try any of their cocktails. But they had excellent local Washington wines. I went with a red Pinot. Hubby stayed with the local Washington craft brews all night. I really liked that they offer Washington products because it went so well with their meal and it gave us the chance to try what we can't get back home. (I will also say that because there aren't that many places to eat on Orcas, we did visit the New Leaf more than once. I tried this kind of hot pot of shellfish and such, that was in an incredible broth. Just wow! And, Hubby, well, he stuck to the steak.) I can't wait until we go back!

What can I say. These guys deserve 10 stars. Carefully crafted food with great service. Special shout out: the scallops were full-on ridiculous. They were perfect. No way anyone anywhere does scallops better, The lemon creme fraiche risotto was inspired. Best salad ever category: warm goat cheese salad. Finally: the flourless chocolate cake put this dinner into orbit. The service was great. Our server was also the manager and answered all our questions so we could make the perfect choice for this special dinner. We have eaten all over the Bay Area in SF; the food here is on par with the very best eateries in SF. The service is way better, Thanks to everyone at the New Leaf Cafe for making this very special family dinner one that will be remembered forever.

These folks do it right! Always a good meal and I have hung out in the bar a few times where it is small but very fun.....The food here is very good, above average, especially for a place attached to a hotel.

One of the nicer restaurants on the island and the deck has gorgeous views out over the water. The food was very good, but even for the island we found it to be slightly over-priced. We happened in very late on a Friday night on our drive from Orcas ferry landing to Doe Bay. We were able to snag the very last table for two and the hostess was very friendly and helpful. Food: Excellent, but be warned, everything that we had on the menu was incredibly rich. So much butter. So, so much. I recommend that you order an entrée to share. Decor: This is one of the nicer restaurants on the island, but even beyond the nice decor is the stunning view of the water from the deck. The heat lamps on the deck are a huge plus as the evenings tend to be cold. Service: Friendly and prompt. (I can't hold this against them, but the table next to us was very loud and drunk when we arrived. I wish that the waitstaff had calmed them down a bit. But the table left quickly so it was not an issue for long.)

Friends visited from out of town a couple nights ago. It was Sunday night so we decided on the "New Leaf Cafe". They'd been to "Nel Thorns" in LaConner, WA. the night before so the New Leaf had its work cut out. From the time we entered until after departing our friends had nothing but the highest praise for the New Leaf. A nice ambient atmosphere with an on task and delightful server. We started off with a dozen sautéed Judd Cove Oysters, a basket of Cottage Bread and a Warm Goat Cheese Salad. All went very well with a bottle of Sinister Hand Cabernet . Next came two Filet Mignon's, a Pan Roasted Mad Hatcher Chicken Breast and a order of Garlic Escargot. All outstanding! It couldn't have been better. From presentation to mouth. The head Chef Steve Debaste is a major reason the New Leaf's success. He's done a fantastic job. He came out and greeted us during our evening experience. He's always in an upbeat and delightful mood. We ended the evening with a triple layer Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosted Cake with a scoop of Lopez Creamery Ice Cream. Two words- Absolutely Awesome! We all agreed it had to be the best, or close to the best chocolate cake we'd ever had. Along with the cake we had Crème Brulee also outstanding. Well done New Leaf, well done. Thanks.

With apologies to Catch 22... Me: Hi can we make a reservation for 6 plus a baby at 5:30? New Leaf: Sorry we can't take a reservation for 6 because we already have a reservation for a party of 6. M: OK, how about we come in at 5 for happy hour, put our name in and see if you can seat us? NL: OK Scene shift to the restaurant. Beautiful summer evening. Our party strolls in. M: Hi, we have a party of 6 plus baby for dinner. NL: Do you have a reservation? M: No, you wouldn't take our reservation. NL: OK we can seat you outside for dinner at 5:30 M: OK how about we enjoy happy hour in bar until dinner? NL: Sorry but no children in the bar. M: Even a baby? (NO screaming toddlers in our group.) NL: No, M: OK, we'll just enjoy happy hour at or table. NL: We don't do happy hour at the tables outside. M: Wait, you won't serve us happy hour at our table AND you won't let us into the bar for happy hour? NL: Right M: So your not willing to accommodate us either way? NL: Right The party discusses what to do and decides to go some where else more accommodating and less attitude. They have a great meal and evening and spend less money. See the next review..

My wife and I stop in at least once each season when on the Island. The other night we had our Anniversary dinner there and as usual the New Leaf Cafe did not disappoint. The food is unique, hot, and fresh. Local products make the meal something you do not find in many places. If your not hungry for a full meal, there is a small bar with unique bar fare and local crafted beers and coctails. If your on Orcas Island, you have to make the New Leaf Cafe (Inside of the Outlook Inn Hotel) at least one of your destinations. You will not be disappointed.

Amazing food and wonderful service. Everyone at our table enjoyed their dishes. I ordered the lemon risotto, which was was absolutely delicious. The interior was really cute, but still very modern. The location is pretty much perfect, especially if you're staying at the Outlook Inn. The portions on the 'bistro fair' are kind of random. The risotto and omelette were both meals by themselves, but the sliders and cheese curds were more horderve portions and can be ordered together.

My boyfriend and I (both service industry veterens) had our celebratory vacation dinner at New Leaf Cafe this past weekend. We could not have had a better experience. Our hostess was warm and inviting. Our server, Jolene, was genuine and interested and very attentive. And the food was AMAZING! That's saying a lot since I'm an allergic-to-nuts-vegetarian. We were very pleased with everything we ordered and the experience as a whole. The wine list was extensive and had something for all tastes and budgets and the menu was equally impressive. Most of the tables have a view which only adds exponentially to the dining experience as the island is a beautiful place. Thank you so much New Leaf Cafe and Jolene! We'll be back for sure!

Came in for breakfast on our first blustery morning on Orcas. It was raining, cold and blowing outside but warm and inviting at New Leaf. I had the Traditional Eggs Benedict and my husband had the Ham scramble with a side of house made sausage. The food was prompt and delicious. The caramelized onions in my husband's scramble were so good he can to fight me for his breakfast. My breakfast was equally wonderful. Service was prompt and staff was very friendly. After our lovely breakfast the weather calmed and then the sun came out. I think the weather gods like New Leaf too.

Brunch was delicious. My Irish Benedict was really well made and the corned beef hash (used instead of the ham) was flavorful and filling. Service was friendly and quick and the view was amazing. I wish they had a few more choices on sandwich-type items (menu is heavy on eggs) but I would definitely return.

We had dinner there on Feb 14th and while service was good the food was sub par. The salmon special was very dry and the crab cakes were average. The filet Mignon was good but the sides were not. For the price it was not worth it. I doubt if we will be back

It is true. There aren't a lot of great dining choices on Orcas Island. The New Leaf Cafe falls into the "really trying hard to be fine dining" category. However, though there is a noble effort with its breakfast menu- namely, "Duck Hash", it unfortunately falls short with its dinner ensemble. Though often tasty, the entrees didn't come close to warranting the Southern California prices. Trust me, with the few fine selections on Orcas I don't mind dropping a lot of money on a good meal. During my last dinner visit it was quite busy. We felt the staff over-extended and aloof, with nare-a-smile broached, and a haphazard, unthankful disposition even after serving our very relaxed, undemanding and polite group a tab well over $200.00. I know how it can be to work in busy places. However, to warrant the lofty coin the staff must mind their mettle. For in the craziest nights reputations are forged and culinary legends are born. This isn't to say The New Leaf isn't good. It is. But, it could be great with dedication to imaginative cuisine and excellent hospitality. Best bet for the unconvinced culinary adventurer not ready to fork over a few hundred dollars without a taste- hit happy hour in the bar where several tasty snacks might allow the pallet to better discern it's course. Duck Mac & Cheese with a fine ale is a good place to start. See you in the lounge- Von Luki

Overall, I'd give it 4.5 stars. Service was excellent. Atmosphere was warm, cozy, elegant. The building itself is beautiful and situated right across the street from the water. The menu was very good, I appreciated the large selection and I always like it when restaurants have small plates so you can try more things. The food itself was very good, probably the only thing I'd give 4 stars. Highlight was the goat cheese salad.

I go to Orcas a few times a year and always have a dinner at the New Leaf Cafe. The restaurant is located on one of the prettiest parts of the island. The food here is top of the line and worth what you pay for it. My girlfriend usually gets the salmon and loves it every time. I go with the duck confit but was very disappointed to see that it was taken off the menu and replaced with a chicken confit. It was good but the duck was one of my favorite dishes on the island. Also the flourless chocolate cake is AMAZING!

We went back for dinner the other night. I decided to drop my review by a star. I had the chicken confit and Yukon gold potatoes. WAY TOO SALTY!! I was very surprised as the organic cuisine seemed like it should have been able to stand on it's own without all the sodium. I'll stick to breakfast in the future here. We were also told we could only be seated at a table with another couple even though there were plenty of empty tables in the restaurant. Not quite sure why they imposed this on our party of four. Our view from our over-crowded table included 3 empty tables for four. The server also brought us a flat soda, replaced it with another flat soda before we finally had to ask for one in the bottle still. Not the same great experience we had last time at all. The others in our party enjoyed their meals, but not the service or the bizarre seating choice.

Fine Dining on Orcas is a a standing joke among most residents and frequent island visitors. Yet the New Leaf pulls it off. We visited as a family of four (with adult children in their twenties). Our dinner was at 7:45 on a Saturday night, and as you will see in a moment the time played into our experience. We started with a bottle of wine, selected from an impressively long list. Then we all chose an entrée, which ultimately consisted of fresh seafood for each of us. My daughter and I both had salmon, my wife had scallops, and my son had Halibut. All appropriately cooked, and all presented in a tasteful manner. My son is a foodie and approved of it all. Not so good: they were out of duck, one of their flagship offerings. They were also out of an appetizer and a dessert. Suppose this means that there is relatively less chance that food will be stale or out of date, but it was surprising that so many choices were in short supply. The restaurant was not full -- at least, not by the time that we arrived. Service was a bit odd, in that the waitress seemed a bit too interactive with the result that table conversation was interrupted a fair bit by fairly lengthy comments. But good enough...

Delicious food! The lamb is amazing as well as the carpaccio! Great service for a restaurant on a small island. One of my two can't miss restaurants on orcas along with the brown bear bakery. I have only been there for dinner but everything looks amazing and unique.

Great happy hour! My husband and I shared duck mac & cheese (a must try!) truffle fries, goat cheese salad, and Waygu beef sliders. All this for the price of one entree item and the food was fabulous! The bar filled quickly, but they opened up some outdoor seating for the overflow.

Came here for breakfast one morning while staying on Orca's. Right off the bat, the view is unbeatable. It was a perfectly sunny day so that helped but really, just breathtaking. Next, the coffee. Perfectly brewed, hit the spot. I ordered the Smoked salmon benedict and it was perhaps one of the best breakfasts I've ever eaten. Eggs were perfectly poached, English muffin was buttered and soft and soaked up the egg and hollandaise (which was also spot on) fantastically. I can't say enough about the smoked salmon itself. The flavor was beyond. They said they smoke it in-house and whatever they're doing, they're doing it right. My boyfriend has the classic eggs benedict and usually I will sneak in a bite or two of whatever he's eating but I didn't even bother this time, my salmon was just too good. For the record, he said his was also amazing. The service was great and the host(/owner?) was such a sweetheart. I hope to be able to come back to this place and Orca's in general.

For my second dinner on Orcas Island, I decided to try New Leaf Cafe. The restaurant was somewhat busy with a warm and inviting, yet narrow, dining room with colorful artwork on the walls, and pretty panels of colored glass that were laid in a border around the upper part of the walls. Dinner offerings were unique in terms of flavor and ingredient pairings, and could be classified as PacNW with Western European influences. I personally found the food to be a little on the rich and/or heavy side. My family enjoyed our appetizers of sweet potato fries, drizzled with truffle oil, and served with house-made beet and mango ketchups. Best of all were the crab cakes with ginger-pear beurre blanc and habenero cream sauce. The cakes (3 for $16) were small in diameter, but very plump, with a lovely crust on the outside and whose interior consisted primarily of sweet, delicious crab. I had a hard time finding any "filler" ingredients other than crabmeat and seasonings. The sauces were delicious and provided just the right amount of heat. Two good-but-not-so-amazing appetizers were the mussels and the pan-fried oysters. The mussels, which were presented "Mediterranean-style", consisting of a sun dried tomato, basil, wine and cream sauce. The shellfish themselves were very plump and tasty, but the sauce was a bit heavy and rich. The pan-fried oysters (5) were served with aioli, but the heavy breading prevented the table from finishing the entire order. The goat cheese salad could be a meal in itself after sharing the appetizers. The generous portion of deliciously mild and creamy cheese complimented the tangy pomegranate dressing nicely. The samon fillet for an entree was perfectly cooked and served with another portion of the ginger-pear beurre blanc and roasted asparagus. The vegetarian entree was a nice offering of beautiful roasted beets, turnips, carrots and asparagus, with red quinoa and balsalmic drizzle. Specialty drinks from the bar were a little spendy and sounded more interesting on the menu than what they tasted like upon ordering. Service was just ok. Our waitress seemed a little spacey upon our interactions, and was hard to track down when we wanted to order our entrees, order our dessert or pay the bill. Plan on $50 per person if splurging on appetizers, drinks, entree and a shared dessert.

Best service on the island! It made for a fantastic evening with our friends. We have been coming to New Leaf for years now, and I have to say, the food is very consistent. We went to numerous restaurants on the island, and New Leaf is the best. The duck mac and cheese is to die for!!!

I would like to take a moment to update my recent review rating of the New Leaf Cafe from a 1-star experience to a 2-star. Not that this changes anything from my experience as outlined in my review, but simply as a good gesture to the ownership of the Cafe that took the time to contact me after such a poor experience. To me this is worthy of bumping up a negative rating as it shows that an owner actually cares about the customer experience at his or her establishment and really is working to make their business a better place. That's more than I can say for a lot of businesses out there. I will definitely give New Leaf another chance the next time I am on Orcas Island and hopefully they will live up to the high expectations that come from the high praises of this cafe.

I tried dinner and brunch here while in town, and both were quite good. Dinner was definitely the standout: the seafood pot was amazing, full of giant mussels, (smaller) clams, crab claws, tender shrimp and lots of delicious white whine/tomato/shallot broth. And a really piece of grilled bread, which was a little greasy, but I do like grilled bread vs. toasted. We got lots of bread to soak up the sauce it came in. Minus one star for our waitress forgetting an appetizer I asked for. I don't blame her, though - there were about 6 people at the table next to us who were druuuuuuuuuunk! They kept asking her to make various folded-napkin animals for their amusement. oookay.. You MUST TRY the elderflower martini - it was amazing. I figured with the drunk people next to us, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." So I had two. They are great. Also, I tried the German-inspired schnitzel (Pork cutlet, caraway spatzle, house-made sauerkraut, braised pork belly, fried egg) and it was quite good. Loved the fried egg on top, and the crispy pork belly vs. the spatzle and sauerkraut. They also had some local San Juan Island beer on tap, which was good. The brewmaster was even sitting at the bar while we were there - my husband stopped by on the way out and told the guy how tasty his beers were. I tried a daily special for brunch: smoked salmon scramble. It was really good, other than the big clumps of cream cheese thrown on top (why weren't they mixed in?). It came with some deliciously crispy breakfast potatoes, some really good berry jam, and a slice of toasted brioche. I tried my husband's eggs benedict and that was good, too. Despite the people at the table next to us complaining about how eggs benedict is never worth getting, it was fine :) While spending a long weekend on Orcas Island, and trying a few different meals between New Leaf Cafe and Allium, I would have to say that I'd probably choose New Leaf if I had to pick one more meal there. the service was friendlier, the menu and drinks more interesting, and the atmosphere cozier.

This restaurant has a pretty nice view. The atmosphere was good and the service was great too. However, the food was just okay. I ordered a grilled halibut which is quite burned. My daughter doesn't like their mac & cheese either.

I wasn't blown away, and my friends were a little disappointed... but we were also unprepared for a dinner "out" on a saturday night on the island. (we'd been camping and cooking our own dinners... didn't quite realise how important a reservation would be) I enjoyed my crab cakes immensely... not much filler, great amount of fresh crab, delicious sauce that has sweet (pear) and spicy (habanero) components. Also got the sweet potato fries. Yummy! Came with a mango catsup and a beet catsup. Interesting flavors... the fries were really good, the catsups were good. I liked having the sweet mango with just a touch of the beet for a slight earthy flavor. I didn't try them, but apparently the cheese on the sliders is a bit overwhelming... just an FYI... reading the menu, that doesn't surprise me, but my friends weren't prepared for the flavor punch We sat at the bar (no reservation... luckily there were open seats at the bar) and the bar tender was obviously quite busy. He kept his cool though and was always smiling... well done, sir, well done

Happy Hour is M-F, 5:30pm - 6:30pm with half price appetizers which include $7 warm goat cheese salad, $4 truffle fries, french onion soup & hummus plate & $6 arugula salad & Kobe beef sliders. We tried the soup, arugula salad, hummus & beef sliders. The french onion soup came in a large pedestal bowl & was very delicious with sweet onions & lots of cheese melted on top! The salad was good but quite small for its price. The trio hummus plate had blackened pita bread & six kalamata olives. It was okay but I garnished it with shredded lettuce from the beef sliders since it lacked any raw vegetables. The three types of hummus themselves tasted bland or watery. Even the texture seemed off. The beef sliders really weren't that great & actually makes me sick to think about them more than 24 hours later. Maybe I just don't like Kobe beef! $5 featured cocktail, the Cape Cod (vodka cranberry), was very potent. Get there early as the small area fills up fast & it also gets very loud. Out of the four appetizers the french onion soup was definitely the best (especially if you have a cold)!

My spinach mush omelette wasn't that hot, had too much cheese, little spinach, some dry mushrooms and was generally too small. That and tea ran $19 with tip. The french toast was much better. Our waitress stood over us waiting for payment because "she had a meeting" Yet as we walked out, she was making no sign of going to the meeting. Quite a change from 3 years ago.

First off, the staff was very welcoming. There wasn't a single employee who didn't check in on us while we were waiting to be seated. The hostess/co-owner was very attentive to our needs as we waited for our table. There is a back bar room that is very small and very intimate. My wife and I aren't very tall people (5'6") but it may pose a challenge for taller folks. We had the halibut for dinner which was simple but incredibly and satisfying. Overall, the restaurant is romantic and has a warm family-owned feel. It's a great stop when visiting East Sound.

Amazing duck confit and salmon benedict. The coffee is apparently delicious too (the 3 people I went with all loved it). I especially loved their breakfast potatoes. The deck has a great view. It is also a short walking distance from the Orcas farmer's market. Next time I do camping in Orcas, I would definitely come back for another incredible breakfast.

The chef experiments a lot, so I highly recommend going with a plan where you order several apps and sample the full range of his skills. Watch out for the gorgonzola fries, that portion will feed six! (esp if you want, as you should, to save room for dessert). Service was very attentive, and helpful in suggesting (and agreeing with the apps plan). Excellent wine list. We went with Sineann's single vineyard Pinot, since the dinner was part of a present to my wife. Request a table by the window or eat outside if you can. This may require an 8pm start, but, hey, it's light until 10pm in the summer and who the heck wants to waste daylight by eating at 530, when you could be kayaking or biking then. Re dress: this is the NW, so as long as your shorts or jeans are clean, you're fine.

Last time my husband and I stayed at Outlook Inn July 2012 we ate at New Leaf Cafe for both lunch and dinner. Excellent food. Always what's in season locally. Could not have asked for better service while sitting outside enjoying sun and summer breeze. Go for the daily items. Menu changes often but the special daily selections, especially seafood, were superb.

My husband and I have eaten at the New Leaf Cafe 6 times, upon staying at the Outlook Inn 3 different times. The breakfasts are rich, satisfying, flavorful and homey. I walked away from breakfast feeling like my totally posh grandmother cooked it for me. The dinners are beautiful. The flavors pop, the portions are perfection, and the service is exceptional. The menu items are always interesting and there is something for all tastes. I literally CRAVE the New Leaf Cafe- if only I didn't live 4 hours away!

New Leaf Café is a must while visiting the lovely Orcas Island. The café is located right on the bay and the indoor/outdoor patio takes full advantage of the view. The café itself is relaxing, quaint and comforting. The menu takes full advantage of the local flavors and leverages those great tastes to create delicious dishes. Brunch is fantastic. I had the special, a mushroom omelet. The eggs were cooked to perfection, the variety of mushrooms were sautéed with herbs and cheese and the side of potatoes and fruit made for a perfect meal on a sunny Saturday morning. The coffee is also delicious. New Leaf Cafe has vegetarian and gluten-free options! Definitely make New Leaf Café part of your itinerary when visiting Orcas Island.

I have just one piece of advice - get reservations! We were staying at the Outlook Inn for a long weekend on Orcas, so we decided to try their restaurant one night. Luckily we got there right when they opened so we got a table, but everyone else that came in 15 or 20 minutes later was told it would be almost a three hour wait. Service was amazing here and so was the food. I had their fisherman's pot and my husband had a steak. Absolutely no complaints about the meal - we will definitely be back on our next trip to Orcas.

Unfriendly Chef, he probably thinks he is running the number 1 restaurant in america. My wife can't eat ham, in the menu there was a sandwich with turkey + ham and cheese, we simply asked to have it without ham, but the chef said NO, not willing to modify his menu! We didn't ask a special order we simply asked to remove one ingredient from a sandwich!! not the chef signature dish Are you kidding me ? this was for breakfast. We also had dinner the evening before, thanks god we didn't have any special request. Food was okay but not great the entire menu was "pretentious", probably this is the nature of the chef ... Location 5 Stars Staff 3 stars (excluding the chef) Food 2 Stars All in all 1 star for the experience

Best view in the Eastsound! They were so nice to adjust their reservations to seat us on the patio since we hadn't requested it and it was their busy season. Food was excellent. I loved the special of the day (halibut with local Walla Walla tomatoes over yukon mashed potatoes) and the server took good care of us. It was a little pricey, but the servings were generous, and that's to be expected in a tourist town. Overall, we had a lovely experience and were happy with our decision to go there. My sweet husband treated me to my birthday dinner that eve.

The food wasn't offensively bad, but coming from Seattle I expected more from New Leaf's high Yelp ratings. A few notes: - The bar is extremely small. We got there at 5 PM (when happy hour opens) and nabbed the last free table. People who arrived after us chose to stay and hover for seats. - One bartender was in charge of pouring drinks for and waiting on the bar's entire happy hour crowd--not the fastest service. Yes, my water glass was empty for most of our time there. -My "featured cocktail," vodka and cranberry, was about 5% cranberry juice, 95% vodka. -The Kobe Sliders came with a good inch of goop (mayonnaise and cheese) on them. -The hummus plate's pita bread, despite tasting charred in places, was refrigerator-cold. On the upside, the prices weren't too bad. Given how few options there are on Orcas Island, this might be a relatively good spot--I'd just advise ordering cautiously. Because that waiter-bartender? He ain't coming back!

I am from California and my cousin has been talking about The New Leaf Café for a few years. She only went once but it left a great impression on her. When I was visiting her a couple months ago and the weekend before I was coming back to California we decided to head out on an adventure. We drove from Tacoma, caught the ferry to barley make it on time for the main reason we went Eggs Benedict. Let me just say that the drive and ferry ride was worth it. Not only was that the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had, but the staff was so kind and welcoming. The meal was so good we ordered a second plate to share, Thank you to the staff for your generosity. My only regret is that we were not able to stay longer to sight see. Right after our meal we had to race back to the ferry for our drive back, but it was all worth it.

This 4 star rating and review is for Breakfast only. Please note that reservations on the weekends are highly recommended. The service was excellent. Our water glasses stayed full, coffee never went cold, and the orders came out quickly. Some of the dishes our group enjoyed: Egg's Benedict (with smoked salmon), Cinnamon Brioche French Toast , Duck Confit Hash, and the Monte Cristo Sandwich. The prices weren't outrageous...but it certainly helped that we had a credit to use from a deal we booked through The Outlook Inn.

We had an odd experience here at dinner, but the food was really good. Far better than the Inn at Ships Bay, and MUCH more worth the price. I would recommend this restaurant for a nice night on Orcas. Happy Hour at the bar is also a good deal if you are more in the mood to spend less and have a casual meal. We would return.

The cardamom cream on top of the waffles is like a CARDAMOM PUNCH IN YOUR WUSSY FACE. You can't handle the spice blast to your palate, which was expecting the samey-sameness of regular whipped cream. NOMZ. Our brunch was firing on all cylinders, both savory and sweet, and we were lovin' it. While the menu didn't seem wild and adventurous, everything delivered. My eggs Benedict was so nearly the best I've had (in the classic prep), but the eggs were a tiny bit over cooked and not spooging their yolky goodness quite enough. However, that did not keep me from enjoying every bite. The little potatoes on the side were good too and nicely spiced. Everyone else at the table seemed to rock their dishes as well, with the Monte Cristo being another savory standout (dunked in pancake batter and fried!). Great people watching spot too on the patio overlooking the bay. Huzzah. Also, the servers were gracious enough to put up with our ridiculous splitting of the check 27 different ways.

Fantastic place. We came for dinner and then returned again for breakfast the following day. Both meals were fantastic and the view is unbeatable.

We had the breakfast there and it was amazing, and very reasonably priced for so much tasty food. The seafood omelette was absolutely stuffed with goodness, including dungeness crab. There's a Hollandaise to go over it (I got mine on the side, it's pretty rich). The brioche toast that comes with most plates is fantastic. The tastiest side bread I've had. I also really enjoyed the montecristo sandwich. The mix of sweet and savory all fried up in the brioche was hard to resist. The restaurant staff were very professional and kind. The window seats look out towards the water. I'd go again in a heartbeat.

Alright listen...okay I mean read... This place is absolutely amazing. My wife and I have lived on Orcas Island for over 20 years each, and this is our favorite spot hands down. They have a great breakfast, and their dinners are almost beyond words. They have recently hired a new chef and he is doing some amazing things in the kitchen there. Aside from the wonderful food and drink, I appreciate the range of the New Leaf. It is versatile and works as a lounge for a quick drink all the way through to a high end, fine dining spot and most things in between. We feel totally comfortable bringing our 4 kids here to eat and love stopping in for a drink during happy hour in the lounge. One more thing...try the Kobe beef sliders with cambozola and grilled onions. Holy S!*T ...they are amazing. Perhaps my favorite food on earth. Cheers.

Excellent restaurant in a very cosy setting across from Eastsound Bay. Great service with elegant presentation. Everything we ordered was freshly produced from very high quality ingredients. In our opinion this is the best place in town. Try the shellfish pot, salmon special , with the crab cakes! Kobe beef sliders now you are talkin!! Footnote: The following morning we had an incredible breakfast at the New Leaf. Probably the best ham and cheddar cheese omelet I have ever eaten and the Seafood omelet....well fahgeddaboutit!!!

Super breakfast from great coffee to exceptional egg dishes and attentive service. We didn't stay at the hotel, but poked around after our meal and one of the staff gave us a tour. Great place!

We had an excellent experience here. The staff couldn't be more attentive and nice. The food was fantastic. The salmon was amazing, so much so, that it ruined my future salmon experiences. The waiter was great. He was funny and personable. We also had a great breakfast here and it was just as good. The whipped cream with cardamom on the French toast is amazing!! The New Leaf is a must if you are on Orcas Island.

Excellent place. We were here for brunch and it exceeded our high expectations. Fresh squeezed juice was gr8 as was the gourmet breakfast. The service could not have been better. The plates were clean!

We went for breakfast... we were 5 minutes early, but they seated us right away. Friendly service - great coffee. Everything we ordered was perfect. We got one of the specials, which was a marinated, grilled portobella with poached eggs and brioche and their original Eggs Benedict. The hollandaise was better than Glo's in Seattle... okay, the hollandaise was different than, but on par with, Glo's. (Glo's is my baseline for hollandaise, and up until now it was the ONLY place I would recommend). The potatoes were only ok - kinda dry. Nothing about this place was negative, all the food and service exceeding expectation. These Island folks know how to make a good breakfast. We got out of there full, happy and for around 30 bucks. Highly recommended. Cons: Very limited menu; a bit pretentious (a ramekin of ketchup w/serving spoon? come on...) Check them out, but get in early because they fill up quickly.

Great local food, intimate environment and attentive staff. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're celebrating a special occasion on the island, or just want a great meal. Pricing is very reasonable as well. The bar area is cute and cozy, and the bartender was friendly and provided some great advice on things to do around the island. Try their Kobe beef sliders, they are unreal!

Although I have not had the chance to eat at this restaurant the owner had enough integrity and professionalism to respond to my previous review. I believe that it is possible our experience was something completely out of character. I respect the owner in her pro activity and hope the staff carries out her principles in future scenarios. I will try out his place again on the mere principle this owner took the time to use Yelp as a way to improve.

Just had dinner here with wife and grown daughters. We were all very pleased and the filet mignon melts in your mouth. We go here on occasion for happy hour and the Kobe Beef Sliders are about as good as it gets. Wait staff is pleasant, efficient and professional and of course the view is hard to beat. Can't think of a reason not to eat here unless you are on a tight budget.

Great food, but terrible service. We had to get an early seating, because we were told the restaurant was booked up. When I went in the restaurant, it didn't look crowded at all. I asked the waiter how busy it was? He responded that he had five tables, the other waiter had five tables, and the hostess was helping the busser buss and set the tables. I started out with an elderflower gin martini and a half dozen Buck Bay oysters on the half shell. The drink was very nice, and the oysters were excellent. I looked over the wine list, and narrowed it down to a couple of Pinots. I had to flag the waiter down to place the order, and I told him I was trying to decide between the two wines. He replied that he would come back when I was ready and he dashed off before I could say a word. About ten minutes later I flagged down the hostess, and she brought our wine. We also asked her to bring us some bread -- the two tables next to us had already had their's for fifteen minutes. The waiter finally came back to our table, and I ordered tenderloin medallions. The waiter was extremely unfriendly, unhelpful, and impatient (and before you go all Wayne Dyer on me, I was trying to be nice to the guy). I did notice him spending a lot of time chatting it up with a couple of other tables, who were obviously regulars. The steak was very good. Afterward, once again, I had to flag the waiter down (I should have stuck my foot out and tripped him) to order crème brûlée (which was very good). When we were done I put my credit card down on the edge of the table. The waiter came screaming by, snatched up the card, said "Great!" and streaked off. He then zipped back by and dropped the bill and card holder on the table without a word and sped off. All in all, we felt pretty abandoned. No checking on us, no refilling the water, no "how was your meal?" The service sucked! Bad!! If I owned this restaurant I would be very embarrassed. I thought I had read that the chef had been "the" chef at The Herbfarm. I've gone to The Herbfarm many times and it is one of my favorite restaurants. However, I have a hard time believing that he was THE chef, since the Herbfarm has about 15 chefs at any given time (half of them are getting hands-on experience while in culinary school). If he had been at the Herbfarm -- which has wonderful food and service, I wonder how he feels about being affiliated with a restaurant with such poor service and disregard for the customer? I would have stiffed the waiter, but my wife made me leave at least ten percent. The waiter missed out on an extra twenty bucks in tips. Maybe he doesn't care? I worked my way through college working in restaurants, and I'm always respectful to people working in them. I will go back to a restaurant with okay food and great service. But, I won't go back to a restaurant with great food and terrible service. I remember they used to say that one unhappy customer told eight other people about the bad experience. Now, with the internet, it must reach hundreds of other people. I don't know how a restaurant can afford to offer bad service and expect to stay in business.

Amazing meal! Started with a carpaccio and finished the meal with some espresso and port. My fiancé had the pork belly and I had the steak frites. Paired with a great Pinot Noir suggested by the waiter it was a evening full of culinary bliss. Will come back for sure.

New Leaf Cafe catered my wedding recently, and did a really fantastic job. The food was great, the staff was courteous and efficient and they were very nice about answering our millions of questions beforehand. Their food and fees are a bit pricey, but everybody had told us that they are the best on Orcas Island, and it turned out to be worth the cost. We had initially considered bringing caterers in from the "mainland" but we're glad we went ahead with New Leaf. Jon and Megan even went the extra mile by providing us with rice (a staple for us Hawaii people). In the past, we've eaten at New Leaf Cafe for breakfast, and this was wonderful as well. Thanks New Leaf for helping make our wedding a very memorable event!

I had both breakfast and dinner here. Brekkie: Really really good home made granola, great sweet breakfasts (like French toast). The usual good coffee and everything Dinner: also really good. right now cant remember what it was but it was definitely good. The service is good and the prices are a bit lower than Cristina's so I would recommend this over that.

Absolutely LOVED this restaurant! The food was beautifully served and so delicious. The servers and hostess were all attentive and pleasant. All I can say is that everything we ate here was incredible. Definitely order the salmon if you love salmon because it is the BEST! YUM! I wish I lived closer because I would be here all the time!

GF and I were nearing the end of a 2-week roadtrip through Calgary, Banff and returning through the San Juans. Our dinner at New Leaf was the best meal of the trip. I love steamed clams and am very particular about the broth. New Leaf nailed it! Sooo good and no doubt in part because they are harvested right on the island. Also had this mango upside down cake which, for even my not-a big-dessert-eater GF, she was in heaven. Truly amazing food and a nice setting. Good service also,

This is a review for the Happy Hour. We got there at 5:30 and the bar was completely full, and it did not look like anybody would be leaving any time soon. Have a feeling that it's a one-seating thing. We came back for their 8:30 happy hour and there was a lot more space. We ordered the duck mac and cheese, truffle fries, Kobe sliders, and French onion soup. Everything was very well prepared. The Kobe sliders were very messy to eat but very tasty. The HH prices were also very reasonable. Highly recommend checking this place out for HH - one can basically have dinner on a budget here.

What a gem this place is. Our last visit was little over 2 years ago. We had one of the best shrimp dishes that night. It was so good we kept telling our friends and family even to this day. We returned to Orcas Island few weeks ago. Naturally we paid a visit to New Leaf Cafe. This time we had the same superb dinning experience. Shellfish pot was tender and flavorful, crab cakes were densely packed in Dungeness crabs meat, fried calamari was juicy and the portion was generous. At the end we finished up with a delicious chocolate mousse with raspberry and Grand Marnier crème brulee. It just wouldn't seem right had we skipped the dessert. New Leaf Cafe is operated by a lovely young couple. It was such a pleasure meeting them and enjoying a wonderful evening in their lovely restaurant.

Arrived and checked in to outlook inn and went to happy hour from 5-6 pm. Had a great house chardonnay and tried two appys - hot goat cheese salad and duck Mac and cheese. Wow, portions were much bigger than my idea of appy and could not finish. Food was very good and appys were just flying out of the kitchen. Very much enjoyed this happy hour experience on orcas island. I must try breakfast here.

Everything that we ate here was picture perfect and scrumptious... the flavors lingering long after the meal and compelled us to return three times over our four-day vacation. Not only was the customer service on par with some of the best restaurants that I've eaten in, but, the food stood on its own and everything else from the well-selected wines to the humble ambiance added to an overall wonderful experience. I have had better food from the New Leaf Cafe over the past few days then I have in Seattle over the past month - I credit this to New Leaf's brilliant chef and dedicated wait staff. Definitely one of Orcas Island's best up and coming restaurants and worth a try for all foodies far and wide!!

Food not worth the price, and the service was mediocre at best. The table next to us mentioned that "the food was OK, but not worth sitting three hours for" (they were there when we arrived, and STILL there when we left). Our server was ditsy to the extreme; every time she said, "I'll be RIGHT back with the drinks/ dessert menu/ steak knife", it was another 10 to 15 minutes. We might have ordered dessert, but after waiting 15 minutes just to hear what the choices were, we decided we didn't need to spend the night in the restaurant.

Spent a couple nights recently on Orcas and it ended up that we ate three meals from the New Leaf. The first was dinner on our first evening there. The appetizers (truffle fries and gorgonzola fries - yah yah yah) were awesome. My wife and I had the seafood pot which was fabulous and I think everyone else at the table loved their dinner. The following night we attended a wedding at Rosario. According to the bride it was catered by New Leaf. For wedding food (always a dicey proposition) it was really excellent. I can't remember all the items but it was in the top 5 wedding dinners I've eaten. The following morning we tried to return to New Leaf for breakfast but there was a line. Frankly they seemed totally discombobulated by the crowd that had developed. This ended up causing us to have an awful meal at Vern's which is enough to almost make me deduct a star. But I can't. Because when we finally did get back for breakfast the next day it was awesome. Slightly pricey, but delicious.

We just left Orcas to continue our Island trip and the thing that made me the saddest is that we only gave ourselves one opportunity to eat at New Leaf Cafe. From the moment we walked in for dinner, we were treated like family. The food was amazing and the service was beyond excellent. We were traveling with militant vegans and the chef was very accommodating by preparing a special dish not just piling vegetables on a plate. The total dinner was exquisite. Don't miss this place. It is worth the cost of getting there just to eat there and the restaurant was so good that it sold us on the Outlook Inn where New Leaf is located for our next Orcas Visit.

We had a wonderful meal at New Leaf a few weeks ago, during our first time on Orcas. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very pleasant with close-up views of Eastsound and nice indoor and outdoor seating options (there's also a cool little bar area). The menu has lots of appealing options and the wine list is great (and very fairly priced). We got a bottle of a Washington state red blend made by Owen Roe, a great winery. We started with half a dozen of the freshest oysters I've ever eaten (from Buck Bay, on the other side of Orcas Island) with a terrific carrot and radish mignionette. We also started with the duck mac n' cheese, which was a very hefty portion with loads of duck meat. Great choices. My wife had the king salmon with the pear ginger glaze and red quiona -- it was awesome. I had a grilled halibut special with a strawberry basil butter sauce and mashed potatoes - also delicious. On the side, they served some really nice local cauiflower too, that was purple, green, and other colors - very unique. We had a GREAT meal, the service was great, and we would highly recommend it to others. We were too full for dessert but they looked and sounded very good.

This place is fabulous!! I hadn't been to the San Juans before and was planning a trip there for my birthday...I was going with family who hadn't been there either. So, I had to decide on a restaurant for my birthday dinner based only on online reviews (I know, can be risky, I was a little nervous)...but I could not have been happier with this restaurant!! The food was amazing, the service equally impressive and the view beautiful. I really can't say enough good things about this place. If you want a special dining experience, this is it!

  • Craig M.

Food was decent...coming from Portland I would have wanted to walk out if I paid as much for the same quality, but by San Juan Island standards it was decent for the price I guess. The service was horrific. Hostess was nice, but the server was completely rude. We got there a few minutes before close, which I understand sucks for the server...I waited tables for several years...but we were really friendly and got right down to business on ordering. It was some of the worst service I've ever had. There was also a wedding going on and every time the door opened "The Electric Slide" or "Shout" was blaring in the dining room...real classy. The view was good from the window which solidified the second star for me.

My dad and I went to Rosario's on vacation a few years ago and it was September. My aunt and uncle rode over on the ferry with us to have dinner on Orcas Island. It was the evening and we had a hell of a time finding any restaurant that was open. This was the only one we could find. By the time we arrived it was already dark. We were seated in the back corner and the lighting was so dim I had a very difficult time reading my menu. On top of that there were only 6 choices of meals for dinner. I'm an extremely picky eater so this as definitely not a good thing. It lead to some arguments. I just did not have a good time at this place. Maybe it would have been different if I could see my menu and there were more choices, and I wasn't already tired from traveling all day.

This is one of my new favorite restaurants...if only it wasn't 1500 miles from my home! My husband and I ate both dinner and breakfast at the New Leaf Cafe while staying at the adjoining Outlook Inn for our anniversary. The first thing I have to mention is the location. The restaurant overlooks the water and the view is spectacular. Although the weather wasn't great on our most recent visit to Orcas, the view still sets the scene for a romantic dinner. We started out with the steamed manila clams (with white wine and garlic). I am a huge fan of clams, and I have to say these were the best ones I've ever tasted. They were flavorful and so tender! For the next course, my husband had a wild mushroom soup, with shiitake and porcini mushrooms and a bit of cream. I had the warm goat cheese salad, which had caramelized pistachios, pomegranate seeds, and a balsamic drizzle. Absolutely delicious! For our main courses, my husband had a goat cheese and prosciutto stuffed chicken breast, and I had the shellfish pot -- alaskan king crab legs, (more) steamed clams, steamed mussels, and four of the biggest and most delicious shrimp I've ever had! Everything was cooked perfectly. For dessert, we had the special, which was an eight-layer carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Our server was bubbly yet professional, and we were pleasantly surprised at the reasonable cost of such a high quality meal. Breakfast was equally delightful. I had the smoked salmon benedict and he had the smoked salmon scramble, with "New Leaf potatoes" and brioche toast. The scramble was served with a dollop of amazing fresh cream cheese. The coffee was so delicious! It was a great way to start our day. I highly recommend New Leaf Cafe to anyone visited Eastsound, or Orcas Island in general. I know I will be back as soon as possible!

Went for Sunday breakfast. The good news is we got right in after not being able to get a reservation for dinner the night before. The hostess and management were very nice. The bad news is the food was hit and miss. Eggs benedict was good with nice sauce and crispy muffins but the potatoes were mushy and bland. French onion soup was cheesy but the broth was not flavorful enough. The Kobe beef sliders were good but the fries were not good at all. The worst part of this meal was my wife's southwestern omlette came with a side of salsa that had a curly dark hair in it. Not hard to figure out where that probably came from. Pretty much ruined her appetitie but she tried to eat some of the eggs only to find it was sort of tough. The management was very aoplogetic and did not charge for the omlette. We probably should have bailed out right then and there but I guess hair on the food can happen at lots of places. They need better food handling for sure and then need to step up the quality of some items.

We sat in the bar as we arrived without a reservation on a Thursday night and they were busy. The bar is small, but cozy and we received good service. I had the halibut and my husband the tenderloin, both were well prepared, very flavorful, and served promptly. Interesting Martini with St. Germains was fun to try. Nice selection of wines. My husband tried the 6 layer chocolate cake for dessert, and I couldn't resist a bit...it was delicious seasoned with a slight taste of cayenne for a little kick. Worth a stop!

Wow! I had a wonderful breakfast here on a lovely summer Saturday morning. My companion & I tried the Brioche French Toast with fresh strawberries, homemade cardamon whipped cream and real maple syrup and the Vegetable Omelet with potatoes and brioche toast. Both were delicious! I was stuffed after eating half of each, but would've kept eating if I could. The vegetables with the omelet were all cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The potatoes are not memorable. The toast was a little buttery for being so rich in the first place. The atmosphere here was somewhat upscale, situated in a sun room style area attached to the Outlook Inn. There walls are decorated with contemporary artworks (for sale, I think) and the decor is relaxed & modern. This is not a diner-style, greasy breakfast, but not an intimidating, exclusive place either. The prices are not cheap($10-15/plate), but it seems nothing in Eastsound is. The service was friendly and attentive, but nothing to write home about.

My boyfriend and two of our friends had breakfast at New Leaf while on Orcas last weekend, and we LOVED our food. I ordered the house made granola, which is the very best granola I've ever had. Hands down. The brioche toast that comes with some of the dishes is AMAZING. The white corn polenta cake that came with one of the specials was out of this world good. Next time I'll try the french toast with the brioche and the cardamom whipped cream--it sounds divine! We all tried each other's food and mmmmm-ed our way through breakfast. The coffee was really good, too, which was an extra bonus since we'd not slept very well while camping the night before and downed a fair amount! Super great server and a pretty view out the window. A really lovely dining experience.

Okay, I should start out with my bias up front. I love breakfast. I am fan when it is good, and I'm whiner when it's bad. Rose's (another area joint) was the rave and recommendation of the town. However, it did not meet our taste. I found New Leaf Cafe and was very hopeful. We were traveling with a new mom, who REALLY wanted good eggs benedicts, so I called the Cafe to see if they offered this dish. The girl, who answered, was please to let me know that not only did they several benedict options on the manner, but that they were amazing. To quote her, "the hollandaise sauce is superb." So off my party of six went down to New Leaf. It was a great breakfast, right down to the Bloody Mary's and coffee. We tested out the smoked salmon benedicts (two thumbs up!), the french toast (yum), good ole fashion scrambled eggs, and so on. It was great. The service was attentive and friendly. And three days later, it was still my favorite place to go on the island for breakfast.

It's about time I got around to writing this, as I have eaten at the New Leaf on every trip I have taken to Orcas Island (live in Seattle area) in the last couple of years once I discovered it. Wonderful staff to start...I've never had a bad experience and meet cool new people almost every time; AND they have the best view around! Their windows and patio are literally right across the street from the water with an unobstructed view!! The food is unexpectedly amazing...truly. Absolutely love everything I've had there, every time...which is basically almost everything on the menu, much of which is locally grown or harvested (OK, I haven't had the mussels...I might get that brave some day) at this point. I was there over the past weekend, this time just me and my 3 year old daughter, and they were so gracious about her and even helped me with taking care of her and making her happy!! That alone would get them a 5 star rating! It was so nice to have a little help right then... This is and will continue to be my favorite place to eat on Orcas and beyond! The Outlook Inn and New Leaf Cafe are a MUST if you are on Orcas island!!

My husband and I had the pleasure of dinning here on Saturday November 12, 2011. It was a dark, rainy, cold night but as soon as we stepped inside the cozy, vibrant restaurant we knew we would have a great experience. The server was enthusiastic about the food and seemed as excited as we were. I had the tomato soup with bacon and chantrelles with a bit of creme fraiche on top. It was perfect for such a yucky night. For dinner my husband had the white salmon special with seasonal veggies. I didn't get to taste a bite of it but he said it was one of the better meals he's had. I had the seafood bowl which included clams, huge mussles, shrimp and crab claws. I could have done without the crab but maybe it was just because the flavor was lacking after eating all of the other great shellfish. For sure, the highlight for me was the dessert. My husband has celliac disease and was excited to see a flourless chocolate torte which was accompanied by salted caramel sauce and a fudgey sauce. I had the fig bread pudding topped with praline ice cream and salted caramel sauce. The desserts are all house made with care. It was a great experience and I'd love to go back again!

the breakfast was good. I got the smoked salmon benedict and she got ham cheese and onion omelet. It was reasonably priced and the service was quick however the forgot the sauteed onions in the omelet and the bearnaise sauce on the benedict almost overwhelmed the salmon. Good food but not somewhere i feel i have to return to

A reliably wonderful place for dinner on Orcas Island. Creative sauces, fresh local produce, and professional friendly service. Chef Steve will often come out to help serve! French Onion soup and salmon dishes are on the top of my list. Leave room for a wonderful dessert.

We arrived on Orcas early in the morning, and went looking for breakfast somewhere in the Eastsound. We stumbled into New Leaf after reading reviews on Yelp and were not disappointed. We did not have a reservation, but were there fairly early in the morning. It did begin to fill up more around 9:30. We later learned that the hostess is the owner of the hotel, and she had some great recommendations for our 9 year old who wasn't sure what to order. She had a half order of waffles with whip cream, and a side of egg. It was perfect. I had smoked salmon Benedict that was AMAZING, and my husband had the ham and cheddar omelet. I agree with previous posters about the potatoes, as they were somewhat "eh" compared to the rest of the meal. Everything else was absolutely perfect, though. We tried to come back the next day (Memorial Day) for a repeat performance, but were sad to see it was closed. Understandably, though. We will definitely return on our next trip.
