Imagine a little place sort of off the beaten path in the middle of nowhere Vermont and you will find yourself at the Localfolk Smokehouse. Though the building looks like it might collapse any minute, it is worth the risk. Four of us stopped here after the BrewGrass Fest at Sugarbush and immediately picked seating on the back deck (picnic table style). Our waiter was quick to arrive and rather interesting to converse with (interesting being oddly laid back). We ordered an appetizer of just fries and a salad and that arrived fairly quickly. We also ordered our entrees and about three of us asked for cornbread. As our food came out, the waiter told us that the chef was "unhappy" with the way the cornbread came out and threw the batch away! Was there anything else we wanted for a side? So we switched over to the mac and cheese... oh the mac and cheese (wait for it). I ordered the Philly cheese steak and my partner went for the pulled pork sandwich. I thought that the Philly cheese steak was very impressive- it was meaty, juicy, and spiced just right (gimme meat well prepared and I will sing your praises). The mac and cheese though, well, the mac and cheese was a character. After a few bites we figured out that this was mac and cheese minus the cheese- it was macaroni in white sauce sans the cheese. We asked the waiter and he checked in with the chef...drum roll please... the chef "tried out a new recipe"- code for- he was having a rough day and forgot the cheese. I thought it was hilarious and want to make it clear that this did not, in any way, detract from the experience. I do have a two suggestions for the establishment though; 1. Please add cheese to the mac and cheese (it's only fair for cheese to be in the dish since it part of the title). 2. Add a beef brisket to your menu (sometimes a girl just wants her brisket!).

So we (11 of us) stopped in around 12pm and the lack of people should have told is something. The waitresses even know she was very nice, was clueless as to what was or was not on the menu. Out of 3 pages of the menu, only 1 was available, some some of the things there were also, not available. So the food. The mac&cheese i had tasted like wallpaper paste, my friend put mustard on his to give it some flavor, and i added way too much salt. My $11 burger came with nothing, no chips fries..., and it was the size of a hockey puck, but tasted good... All in all... Id never go back

SMOKED WINGS! Was weary to try, and so happy I did. The BBQ here is the best ! Homemade BBQ sauce tops it all off. A great local watering hole with quirky decor. Awesome large bar and arcade games and two pool Tables in back. Band nights get crazy fun and busy. Will always stop in for a visit.

You want Vermont? You'll get it here. This is a choice dive bar-man cave-barbecue restaurant-ski lodge hybrid that also happened to be Waitsfield's most hopping dance club on the Friday night we were in town. We were ogled for being such obvious Bostonians among a crowd of obvious Vermonters, but after a couple of local brews and some old-school hip-hop, we found it amusing. The food was surprisingly good, the beer list was standard by Vermont standards (aka good), and the people-watching was truly phenomenal. The DJ on this particular evening was not very good, but that didn't stop us from dancing the night away and successfully deflecting all creepers that came our way. The service? Not great, and (surprising for VT), not very friendly. I had to wait so long for food/beverages that it nearly wasn't worth the wait. Notable attraction: the ladies' bathroom, where you can definitely look right into the other stall if you are on your tip toes, or just tall. Do not come here if you want a memorable VT gastronomic experience; in that case, a trek to Prohibition Pig or even Mad Taco is more appropriate. But for seeing Vermonters in their natural habitat, I've yet to come upon a place better than this. I can't wait to return during ski season!

Overall great food! Ribs were great! Smoked wings and mashed potatoes were the best ive had. The mac and cheese and beans were avg. being a smoke house... Where's the brisket?!?

For central Vermont and the Valley especially, this is pretty good barbecue. I went with a group and those of us who got the combo plate with two meats were pleased as punch. Mine was ribs & chicken, my friend's was ribs & pulled pork. We both agreed those were hefty, meaty ribs. The chicken was perfectly cooked on my plate. We all tried the pulled pork and thought it was delicious, but a little sweet for us. The mashed potatoes were great, but the Mac & cheese was really bland. The portion was so huge we could only eat half of our plates. Another friend got the shrimp taco and we all agreed that maybe the tex-mex was not the right direction for the bbq joint. But, we all shared the jalapeño poppers and were delighted by them, the sauce especially. The staff were friendly, service fast, and overall we thought this was a win. If we lived here, it would be at the top of a short list of places to go out on a date night or special occasion, but it's a bit pricy for anytime eats.

Stick to the BBQ chicken with any of the sides and you will be happy. Stray into the Mexican side of the menu and you will be very disappointed. Not only do the recipes stink, the preparation and presentation are cafeteria grade. Rustic/divey barn like atmosphere is a plus for me. Good beer selec

We had them for our wedding and they did an INCREDIBLE job. They came out to a barn we were getting married in and smoked bbq there. It was incredibly delicious and way better for a wedding than fancy food. After the wedding for weeks and weeks people told us how incredible the food was. They were responsible, polite and just overall wonderful. I wish I could do more to recommend them because they were amazing

Pretty good service, we were concerned after reading the previous reviews so this was welcomed. Food was definitely reheated. We ordered 2 barbecue combos, flavor and portion size were okay but the texture gave away that the meals were not fresh. Cheap PBR cans but the other beers seemed to be on the expensive side. The interior is interesting but needs some maintenance. The floor is very uneven leading me to feel like I was facing downhill (check out the water in the fish tank). I was also curious as to why there was a drain pipe running from the second floor through the bar area and into the ground floor (it was cleverly disguised by being painted black instead of the typical PVC white). The heat could also use some help, it appeared that none of the baseboard heaters actually had the covers on them and I was cold the entire time we were there but this could've been a function of it being 0° outside and sitting near an exterior door. On the bright side the bathroom was okay. Lastly, they could definitely use more parking.

Being that it's rural VT, this place is great in terms of a BBQ joint. Giant space inside with high post and beam ceilings, large seating area that's good for families, stretch around bar, game area with arcade games and pool tables, and a huge back deck. Food is solid. Pulled pork nachos and any of the wings are personal favorites. Beer selection is huge with many different brews on tap and in bottle. Lots of good drinks to be had to that are sure to be poured by down to earth, friendly bartenders. Great spot that's popular with the locals and offers something that's both different and delicious than the fare traditionally associated with a ski town.

Best ribs I've had this far North! Was actually surprised just how good they were! FYI, ribs are ready at 5 pm, bar's open though for a wait. Nice view from the deck which has benches. The garlic french fries were awesome and we ended up with two orders, the corn bread was "ok" but not enough to lower the 5 stars. Friendly staff, Cory was awesome, we're definitely coming back!

House smoked amazingness- delicate and non-overspiced BBQ sauce. Profound local brew selection. Infallible "locals" spot

I guess this is supposed to be more of a divey ski bar than anything else because that's what it feels like. Walked in and it was a circus...there's no hostess stand. No one to greet you or tell you how table service works. My wife had to chase down a server to get our name on a list, which took time. The BBQ is mediocre at best and service is a little shotty. Pretty good beer list, though. I'd say this place is fine for post-skiing beers, not dinner.

This was our second time eating there and I was with my parents, my sister, and two nephews (ages 7 and 8). The first time the service was lacking, and this second time it was downright rude. Our server had trouble keeping our water glasses full, which she could have done instead of texting on her iPhone over in the corner. My sister asked if one of my nephews could taste a small piece of chicken, just to prove to him that he would like it. She said that was not something that could be done. She ordered a shrimp appetizer, and asked if it came with BBQ sauce on it - she said it did not, but when it came it was drenched. She never did come back to ask how everything was, because she was too busy texting. I would not recommend this place.

It's there in the name, folks--Localfolk Smokehouse--they're not trying to fool anybody. This place is a local's bar that has bbq. G-o-o-o-o-d bbq. The draft selection is amazing. A. May. Zing......and rotates frequently enough to keep the beer geek in you coming back for more. The smoker makes the menu. The portions are huge and the price is friendly. Ribs off this smoker are what I now compare all ribs too.....I can't think of better praise than that..... Service can be an issue, as the place is primarily a bar, a locals bar, and can get slammed....my advice to you is to arrive early for dining and keep your radar up for things like four softball teams walking in simultaneously. Which happens.

Three buddies and I just drove down to Sugarbush VT from Ontario Canada and didn't arrive till after dinner on Sat - hungry as you can imagine! We drove around for 10 mins and I spied the Localfolk Smokehouse! (a Smokehouse strait out of Man vs. Food). Walking in - the smell of smoked ribs and chicken fill you senses and the interior is as rustic as Vermont gets (I don't think there was one level area on the floor). I ordered the combo plater for $16.92 - 1/2 rack of smoked ribs, 1/4 a smoked chicken, side of mac & cheese and mash potatoes! This meal was all we talked about until they re-opened Tues night - we all went back for seconds!!!! Good beer, good prices, good service, 2 pool tables at the back along with a couple great arcade games (Golden Tee).

Localfolk is wedged in at the fork in the road where Rt. 17 meets Rt. 10. It's just down the mountain from Mad River Glen, where it and gravity draw tired, hungry skiers in at the end of the day with huge plates of decent grub, a full bar and a lively game room. The menu offers the usual ski-town standards of fries, wings, burgers, sandwiches and even a fair-sized Tex Mex section. But what distinguishes Localfolk from the competition are the mighty fine St. Louis style smoked pork ribs. The ribs we ordered were fantastic: tender, juicy, meaty and flavorful through and through, but not at all oversauced. If this restaurant only served ribs, it would be a 4 or 4.5 star establishment. Unfortunately, other dishes we tried were a bit less successful. Pulled pork -- the braised kind, not the kind made low and slow over dry heat -- was too tough (not cooked long enough and/or not fatty enough) and too coarsely pulled. Enchiladas were filled with well-seasoned, sliced, grilled beef (not ground beef, thank goodness), but the meat was tough and chewy and tortillas were dry, tough and rubbery. The tortillas may have been fried too far in advance, refried and/or just not spent enough time in contact with sauce. Sides of black bean salad, cornbread and mashed potatoes were solid, not standout, though I appreciate that the mashed potatoes were made from real potatoes, not flakes. Cornbread was northern style: a bit sweet and lot soft, with a large ratio of wheat flour mixed in with the yellow cornmeal. I personally prefer southern style yellow cornbreads, but Localfolk's wasn't a bad example for this side of the Mason Dixon. For the area, the restaurant is well priced, especially if you factor in the massive portions. A very large combo platter with a choice of two meats (pork ribs, smoked chicken or pulled pork) and two sides was $15.50; two enchiladas with two sides were $12.61; a friend's nachos platter, which I didn't try, looked like a built-to-scale replica of a ski mountain, it was so tall, and set him back a mere $9.17. Even if you're a VERY hungry caterpillar, the combo platter will almost certainly leave you with enough leftovers for at least one more meal -- in our case, two. Most of the menu is not anything I'd travel far out of my way for. But if you do find yourself in town with a hankering for a meaty, hearty meal, give those ribs a try. They're the real deal.

This place was a little rocking when we got here. We were told 30 minutes to wait but were seated in five with apologies for waiting. Friendly staff and great beer on tap. Tight quarters and a slightly long wait for food, but overall, a great experience. Entrees were good but sides could have used a little more seasoning. We will be back! Extremely reasonable pricing, especially for kids meals.

I like this place. I like to sit at the bar for dinner. It tends to attract locals, everyone knows each other, and a few eccentrics hang at the bar. The bbq is quite good, I really like the pulled pork. Sitting at a table is a very different experience. The waitstaff is careless and slow. You need to flag them down over and over. There are not a lot of tables, so who knows what the situation is. There are 2 pool tables, and they get bands.

Went here while I was up in the area skiing at MRG. This place looks huge from the outside and inside its fairly open but not as big as you would expect. The first thing I noticed when I walked into this place was how there were at least three different tables where the food/plates had yet to be cleared. It was weird because they were littered around the room and I had no idea why. It stayed like that for most of the time we were there. The menu is pretty standard bbq, ribs, pulled pork and such. For around 15 dollars you can get a platter with ribs, chicken, and/or pulled pork. The portions are big which is nice and you get two sides as well. I got baked beans and mashed potatoes, both which came out cold. You could see the scope outline in the mashed potatoes which isn't that big of a deal, I just prefer mine a little more runny. This place also has a decent selection of micro brews which is always nice with bbq. All in all, a fair restaurant if you're in the area.

My brother and I (13 and 18) respectively came here on a Wednesday night in mid August. When we arrived it seemed like there was only one waitress and one bartender on duty in the dining room. I've been here before so I knew to sit ourselves. However, as the two employees helped out other customers, they walked right by us. After 10 minutes I finally got up and asked for the menus and the waitress said yea as she continued to walk. The bartender ended up bringing us the menus and taking our order shortly after. We both got rootbeers while we waited for our food. I ordered the BBQ chicken and my brother got the kids quesodilla. The food wasn't bad but wasn't good either, but like I said we have been here before so we knew what type of food we were getting ourselves into. We finished eating relatively quickly but then waited 25(!) minutes to have our plates cleared as we got fed up and asked for the check. The whole time we were never asked if the meal was going ok or anything. We felt like the wait staff either forgot about us or just didn't care about two teenagers enough to serve us. That said I'm sure I will be back here with my family but without adults present, I don't think I will return. Terrible service and mediocre food were the themes of this outing. That said, when I have been with my parents, the experience was much better. If you come here, just hope your service was better than mine because this was ridiculous.
