I had Hoped for an improvement over what Edson Hill has always been but am very disappointed. There is no cozy Vt. charm. The decor is blah, not at all a Vermont feel (more like House Beautiful typical neutrals that are so 'done' and boring). Thankfully the setting is as beautiful - as they can't change that. The food was not good (mine anyway) and expensive. I resent having to buy one glass of wine for min. $12. I have visited Stowe for Years and always had certain places I could count on. We come as a group and don't mind spending for a Special treat. Edson Hill is not any longer charming or yummy... so sorry. Hint to owners: there are many wonderful Vt. artists and artisans.

I was really excited about this place after reading the reviews that said how wonderful everything was after the renovation. Maybe I got my hopes up too high, but I was thoroughly disappointed. The reception area seemed really kind of haphazard to me, there didn't seem to be a rhyme or reason for the style and decor. The dining room was pretty, but we were told that it was closed on Sundays and Mondays (which makes no sense to me. If a hotel claims there's a restaurant on site, you wouldn't imagine it would be closed two of the prime days), and then we were informed that the tavern was open until 9, but that they were fully booked that night. This irritated me. One of the big factors in my choosing this hotel was that there was a tavern and restaurant on site, because I didn't want to have to travel more after we got there, having wanted to just relax on the grounds. I think it's kind of ridiculous that there were no dining options available to us on a Sunday night. So that was a big strike. We got up to the room and had to scrape our car against a giant bush because there was NO other parking for our room, unless we wanted to park down a steep dirt/rock hill and carry all of our stuff up and down. No thanks. The room itself was not as nice as we had hoped. The bathroom was nice, but very small, the bed was nice and comfortable, and we were excited about the giant soaker tub, but I'm not exaggerating when I say it took no less than 30 minutes to fill because the spout let out less water than a standard kitchen faucet. The walls were just kind of ho hum wood plank, and there wasn't much in the way of decor besides that. One of the other biggest marks against it was that the only AC available is a small above-door remote controlled unit. It wasn't on when we got to our room and it was 90 degrees outside, so our room was SWELTERING. We turned on the AC as high as it would go, which was little more than a slight breeze. It took literally 4 hours before it was even comfortable to just sit in, but it never really got "cool." This resort would probably be more appealing in the winter when you can take advantage of the wood-burning fireplace. The only highlight was that the grounds and view were wonderful, but we could have gotten that at a dozen different places for MUCH less than $300+ dollars. I wouldn't recommend this place unless it was winter and you don't plan on using the dining facilities AND you can get a really good deal on the room.

Upon entering the main house, reception is to the right, kind of shoved into the corner a bit. The space felt cramped and awkward. The man at reception was busy taking a phone call when I walked in. He told me I could sit in the other room for a few minutes and he'd be right with me. The room I waited in was just past the reception area. The first thing I noticed upon entering the room was a large, hideous, cream color shag carpet (the kind that looked like it would collect dirt easily and be hard to keep clean). As for my room, I stayed up the hill in one of the cabins. The room and bathroom were updated and both very clean. Although the style of the decor wasn't very appealing to me, the bed was comfortable. It was a Sunday night that I stayed so the only option for dining was the tavern and it was not busy at all. I had the turkey burger with grilled peaches on top and it was very good. The breakfast in the main dining room was very good as was the view which overlooked the beautiful grounds and scenery off in the distance. The woman working in the breakfast room was very polite and friendly. Overall, I am not sure I'd stay here again though. The food and nice view at breakfast are probably the only two things that would keep me coming back. Otherwise, I'd consider it a bit overpriced.

This place is fabulous ! We just celebrated a family wedding here in July and could not have been happier. The inn and all the rooms have been totally renovated and are spectacular. Everything is beautiful and extremely comfortable. The food was fantastic and there was plenty of it. The country breakfast is enough to sustain one for an entire day until you sit for another yummy meal at sunset. Even feeding a crowd of over 100 for the wedding, everything was perfect... Fresh, local, perfectly seasoned and beautifully presented. The inn is elegant while maintaining just the right balance of casualness to allow guests to feel relaxed to truly enjoy all the place has to offer. The little extras like bringing the local plants and flowers into the rooms each day add such a warm and inviting touch one just doesn't want to leave here! The staff, from Tom the manager to the housekeepers, waitresses, bartenders, wedding planners, kitchen help, absolutely everyone, is friendly, helpful, professional and there to help make your stay the best it can be. Thank you all again !! As a combined family we filled most of the rooms for a weekend in July, and as a well traveled family, we have all raved about this place and are all talking about individual visits back for weekends away...... I highly recommend it to everyone!!!

We stayed three nights at Edson Hill Manor for my brother's wedding. I was a little nervous to stay here after reading previous reviews, but our stay was great! I had never been to Stowe before and the new owner/innkeeper (Carl) was beyond helpful with suggestions for local attractions and really anything else we needed. The breakfast was delicious every morning. The living room was so cozy and the perfect place to catch up with family and friends. Our room didn't have a television, but the entire inn is wifi enabled. To tell you the truth, I wouldn't have watched tv with the beautiful grounds to stroll around right outside my door anyway. The manor was very clean and quaint and I look forward to going back after the renovations are complete.

My wife and two kids (7 & 10 at the time) have been going to Stowe for years. It was New Years weekend and we got a late jump on reservations so we couldn't get any rooms at the Stowe Mountain Lodge so we consequently ended up here. We booked one of the Carriage House rooms for 4 nights. Upon our arrival we checked in to #14 and were told by the person manning the front desk that the "fireplace was ready to go". This is also what the website says; "each has a large open brick fireplace with a match ready fire ready to light." The room itself was fine, although the website made no mention of the fact that many of the Carriage House rooms have no TV and no wi-fi. (Anyone traveling with kids knows that at least one of these is essential.) There is also zero cell service. The next day when we got back to the room after skiing I decided to take advantage of the fireplace. Following what both the innkeeper and website said I simply lit a match to start a fire. Within a minute of starting the fire the room began to fill with smoke. I looked at the damper mechanism located on the outside of the fireplace to ensure it was open. It looked like it was but I wiggled it anyway. That's when the damper broke all the while the room (with all of our clothes in it mind you) is filling with smoke. The smoke was so heavy I couldn't even breath and my eyes were burning. I ran to the front desk to alert them and a different innkeeper (I think he was one of the owners) came down to investigate. He attempted to put the fire out by throwing snow on it. He eventuality succeeded in getting it out but the damage had already been done. The room was inhabitable and all of our belongings smelled of acrid smoke. At this point it's around 5:00, we'd been skiing all day are exhausted and hungry but we still have to get all of our stuff out of the smoke filled room and move to another room. The innkeeper began the process of finding us another room. They had a comparable room available but we could only stay in it for that night because it was booked. I asked why they couldn't get the other room cleaned up and put the new arrivals in there instead of inconveniencing us again. They weren't willing to do that. We ended up in a smaller room with two queen beds for that night because we wouldn't be made to move again. This room had a TV, but still no wi-fi. It also had a Christmas tree in it that fell over inexplicably in the middle of the night with the result being broken glass ornaments all over the floor. Before going to dinner that night I asked if they had a washer and dryer on property that we could use. The innkeeper went to check but promptly informed me they were unavailable because they had to wash towels. So before dinner I had to find a laundromat that was open late and drop off our clothes. The next morning we were all done with the Edson Hill Manor and decided to just go home after we went skiing that day. Upon checking out the innkeeper wasn't there so I simply left the key at the front desk and departed. Needless to say I was expecting, at the very least, a credit for the night we were displaced because of the fact that our first room almost burned down. Nope - we were charged the full boat. Admittedly agitated I called the innkeeper to complain and instead of offering me a credit he actually blamed me for the incident telling me I didn't open the damper. Unbelievable! I was told when I checked in it was open and it didn't matter anyway as the damper was broken! Again, I was fairly agitated at this point and the innkeeper/owner ended up hanging up on me. I had to go through AMEX to eventually get my one night credit. (It should have been two, frankly.) So to recap: our first room almost burned down, the owner did very little to put us in a comparable room for the rest of our stay, there is no wi-fi in the rooms, and oh yeah - the "complimentary" breakfast is fairly mediocre. It's obvious from many reviews on here that many people love this place - good for them. My family had a horrible experience that ruined our New Years weekend. I wouldn't recommend that anyone stay here - especially if you have a family.

Just returned from a delightful mid-week, mid-summer (early July) stay at this inn. The service was impeccable, while comfortably casual. The grounds are gorgeous, the room was comfortable and the breakfast was delicious. Summer weekends apparently are very, very busy with weddings, so if you can book in the middle of the week you may find you have the place almost to yourself. This inn is off-the-beaten-path (a couple of miles from Mountain Rd), which makes it ideal if you're looking for a quiet getaway. So give a call or check out their website to plan a visit. (on the plus side...best sex we had in that relationship)

After having had our wedding reception there 16 years ago, and celebrating our son's birthday there very recently, my endorsement remains as high now as 16 years ago. This is a wonderful place in every sense. The setting is spectacular. It strikes the perfect balance between being refined and cozy. All of the rooms are very tastefully decorated, and the grounds beautifully maintained and integrated into the natural splendor. The food is excellent. I can't imagine a nicer place to enjoy a quintessential Vermont stay. The proprietor and staff provide outstanding service. Downtown Stowe is only 5-10 minutes away, yet you truly are tucked away privately amidst such serenity.
