A great local favorite! Came recommended by a local and did not disappoint. Give this place a try with the family!

A cute malt shop, just off of the main drag in Stowe. The ice cream was good, the service was ok, but definitely not friendly. I enjoyed my sundae, but I wasn't floored by it, so 3 stars.

Mmmmmmm...coffee frappe...with maple syrup! We only had dessert here, but the frappes (aka milkshakes) are as delicious as ever!

Exactly what you'd expect. Good fries and milkshakes.

Ordered a shake at the counter. Paid. Waited about 20 minutes. Then when we got it, an older lady behind the counter yelled at us, "Is it paid for?!" We told her it was, then she yelled at her colleagues, "It it paid for?!" It took her about three tries before someone remembered that we did pay for it. Watched another family at the counter eat all their ice cream before the mom ever got her cone. After all that, the shake was just okay.

Food is average. Has a lot of 50's memorabilia. The kids liked it.

Great food, good prices, fun decor, real 50's malt shop look and feel. The waitstaff was great, the burger and onion rings were great. A great value, and enough food to feed you, not over stuff you. This little gem is tucked away off the Main Roads but a find you will want to make.

  • A Local's Review For U.

OK, the foods not great here, but that's not the point. The place is kid friendly, the decor is cute, and the prices won't kill you. The kids can get their chicken fingers or hamburgers and you can save your appetite for dinner. The other good option for kids is pizza at Piecasso which also serves some decent real food for adults.

Stowe is a very nice ski town, which will leave you some great memories, but a thinner wallet. The Malt Shoppe is a good place to have a snack, meal, or ice cream treat for an affordable price. Inside there are some tables, along with a counter, a cozy space. It is most certainly kid friendly and what kid does not love a burger and french fries. The food is good and the location, tucked right behind Main Street is convenient.

The chocolate milk shake was very addictive. I ended up drinking three while I was in Stowe! I also remember the fries as being pretty good too. The vibe of this place is mega-retro in a Happy Days kinda way. Which is OK by me - the music was really good, random 50s pop hits, not just Elvis. Very family friendly too, they had high chairs and crayons with coloring in paper for the kidlies. Definitley fills a gap in the local dining choices.

This place is great to go with kids! Food is really good and not just standard burger fare. Delicious veggie sandwich on pumpernickel bread with curry mayo... Had to go back a few days later for another one. Kids shared vanilla malt shake, to die for. Then off to Stowe's great playground around the corner... Great place!

Good food. Slow service. The vermonter panini was great. Kids loved the shakes.

Food: Excellent burgers and a good variety of them, cooked to your order. A heaping pile of fries and a pickle come with. Meat was nice and juicy and I devoured my cheeseburger. They also have plenty of ice cream flavors and do sundaes and milkshakes ("frappes" for New Englanders). I had a chocolate frappe and it was scrumptious. Caveat: The lime rickeys were awful and just tasted like water mixed with artificial diluted lime flavoring. Gross gross. Service was decent. The place has the decor you would except for a small town restaurant 50s diner. Although the whole place looks like it could use a good scrubbing down.

Stopped here for lunch on a Sunday while passing through Stowe. I had the fish and chips and my sister had the Cajun burger (well done) and both tasted pretty good. However a friend of mine had the lumberjack burger (well done) and didn't think too highly of it. The fries here are pretty good though and are a must have. It was hard to put down. For drinks we ordered two malts and hot cider. The malts were not as good as Johnny rockets but the cider hit the spot. If I passed through Stowe again, I'd stop at the Malt Shoppe. Everyone enjoyed the good old fashioned music that they played. If you're also in town on a Sunday, stop by the Laughing Moon Chocolate at 2pm for the Candycane demonstration. That was pretty cool!

A down to earth place with down to earth waitstaff and good food. The Part of the fun of being here is the retro decor - antique Shell fuel pump and a cool 50's feel that a seems authentic! Onion soup was pretty good. Caution though - if you don't like rye stay away, it's made with rye bread. I had the hot open turkey plate. Not fresh turkey, not fresh peas (frozen) but GREAT fries. I think it would be great for these folks to really come in with some excellent food. I've been here before and the shakes and ice cream are good. It's a malt shop and that's fine.

I have been going here with my family for the last 10+ years. I just went again today to have lunch with my son. We ordered a cheeseburger with fries, and I ordered the chicken fingers. I made a special request and ask them to put the chicken fingers on a sandwich, which our server was more than happy to do. Both orders arrived promptly, hot, and with a smile from our server. We could not have been happier with the quality of our food. This place is a great deal. You don't pay a lot and you get an excellent meal. They have an ice cream parlor where you can sit at the counter and order sundaes and milkshakes. A great option when you want something quick, satisfying, delicious, and you want to satisfy a guilty pleasure.

This place feels like you just traveled in time to the 1960's. I loved it. Service: Wait staff was friendly and brought us extra napkins, left us a jar of water (it was easier for our party-of-six group.) Food: I had the tuna sandwich, but everyone gets the burger. It looks like burgers are the way to go.

A super cute 50's burger and ice cream place in the heart of Stowe. I really enjoyed this place! The decor and ambience is fabulous with doowop music playing in the background, and lots of records and 50's-60's black and white photos on the walls and tables. My cheddar burger with bbq sauce, caramelized onions ans bacon was cooked perfectly- and for any of you reading my posts over the past year or two know that isn't always easy to receive. The fries were tasty too. My bf had the burger with mozzarella, pesto and bacon. He also had rave reviews and his sweet potato fries had a nice flavor and weren't too greasy. I was a little disappointed to see that they actually charged me extra to put a small piece of lettuce on my burger...really? A bit nickel and dimey. My bf had a chocolate egg cream and was quite delighted. I had a chocolate and peppermint hot fudge sundae. They know how to do it up right! Fudge on the bottom AND on the top. Heaps of whipped cream. None of that skimping that seems to be going on at every other ice cream place around. For a 2-scoop sundae it seemed huge! :) It is true they only take cash, but they do have an ATM machine on- site and I thought it was a nice gesture they're willing to deduct $1.50 from the bill to cover the ATM withdrawal fee. Our server Kat was friendly and very willing to let us stay past their 8pm closing time to finish our burgers and dessert. (A welcome change from our recent visit to the awful Airport Diner,... thank God.) One downside: the furniture! While very cute, the booth and chair seating are both very uncomfortable. If you're in the Stowe area, it's a great place to check out! Just remember they close rather early!

I have been to the Depot Street Malt Shoppe roughly every year since my family started staying a week in Stowe during the summer since I was a little kid, so close to 15-20 years or so. Depot Street is a throwback to a classic 1950's era diner with some classic dishes and drinks, including my beloved New York style egg creams. So why only 3 stars for a joint that holds a special place in my heart? Well, the food has never been all the special, everything being simply A-OK, and there's nothing wrong with that. And while the nostalgia factor might be enough to possibly bump it up to 4 stars, the fact that they don't accept cards is enough to keep it at 3. I know it's a throwback to a time where people paid in cash only, but in 2015 places need to accept cards if they want to reach their full potential. Actually, wait... this is Vermont and people are super nice - they have an ATM on site and they deduct the ATM fee from your bill! You guys won me over with that and bumped up my rating to 4 stars!

The good: fries and milkshakes (we had chocolate, mocha, and coffee). The not-so-good: the burgers were over-cooked, bordering on burned. The burgers were also quite small, in relation to the bun. The interesting: they don't take credit/debit cards, but they will refund the ATM fee (there's one on site). The location was quaint and the walk was pleasant, convenient to shopping in downtown Stowe.

Great 50s style diner with burgers, malts, other hot entrees, sandwiches and gluten free bread. The patty melt on GF bread was AWESOME. I haven't had a patty melt since my wheat allergy emerged 20 years ago. BUT one caveat is the the regular hamburgers come on English Muffins which is not disclosed in the menu. My wife was really put off. They did being a regular bun, so kudos for that. But my wife was pissed initially and could have ended badly for all of its.

Went here back in September 2013 during our visit to the USA. Didnt have food but had milkshakes and boy were they good. Maple Syrup Milkshake with Malt (Horlicks) and they came out in the same metal tumblers that they are mixed in and they were sooo cold. The restaurant itself has a 60's diner vibe and is quite well laid out. Here stories of how its been really busy but we must have been lucky one afternoon during leaf peeping season. If your near Stowe and you want milkshake to die for then this is the place to go.

Old style nostalgic themed malt shoppe with a decent albeit uninspiring menu, average service, slightly on the dingy side and average food quality. Not a disaster, but not worthy of MVWIS (Must Visit Whenever In Stowe) status. I'm a bit of chili afficiando, so was anxious to try their "classic" chili, which turned out to be a slightly odd colored and not particularly memorable concoction as a result of the use of garbanzos in their recipe.

The 3 medium rare burgers we ordered were all well done. Friendly waitress but unacceptably slow. We spent 1 hour waiting to place the order and receive our meal which only took 20 minutes to consume.

My family and I visited on Monday the 30th of December at 130 pm. We were greeted by, from what I could tell the owner. The restaurant was very busy and all tables were occupied. It's a small establishment so I guess this isn't hard to do. The atmosphere was diner type. Loud but fun and upbeat. To be expected. We were told a 15 minute wait or seats were available at the counter in the back near the kitchen. We sat in the back at the counter. My wife is Celiac so she asked if Gluten Free options were available. The man said yes and we were seated. So far so good. After a short wait we were greeted by an obviously over worked and slightly stressed friendly waitress who introduced herself. Our drink order was taken and arrived about 5 minutes later. Our order was taken at that time and we were assured that the kitchen had all ingredients necessary for a gluten free hamburger. Throughout this experience so far we were privy to all the behind the scenes drama small restaurants must go through when busy. Drink orders, kitchen chaos, table strategies etc. due to the location of our counter seating. All really entertaining stuff that really didn't bother me. After 40 minutes of waiting for our food and emptying our drinks the waitress came over to us for the first time in the 40 minutes and informed us they had no gluten free bread/ rolls because the delivery truck never arrived. She was apologetic. I asked myself why we didn't leave long before. I still can't figure out why. Our food arrived hot and as ordered about 10 minutes later. Make a long story short. My wife left to get food at another near by restaurant and my children and I finished our very delicious food while she was gone. In this time the waitress returned refilled our drinks, apologized again and informed me that she wasn't going to charge me for the food we didn't receive(wife's gluten free hamburger) thanks. No apologies were ever offered by any managers or other staff. My wife returned with her Gluten free meal from another restaurant and finished it with us back at her seat. The good: hot, delicious diner/American food served in a vintage 50's setting in a noisy fun atmosphere. Order the hot pastrami sandwich, you won't be disappointed. Friendly service. The bad: poor staff/ kitchen communication. Overcrowded. Very little room for amount of patrons. Long wait for food and service possibly due to amount of patrons at the time. The staff was clearly overworked. Not enough staff. Poorly coordinated service. The cooks in back had no hair netting/ hair covers of any kind. Long facial hair that was not covered in anyway. I love hair in my food, not! The food was pricey for what was served. 2.55 for a soft drink. I have been to far less nicer places that have hair coverings and have better service and did not run out of Milk of all things. Yes they ran out if milk at a malt shop. Go figure? I would have left long before had I known my experience was going to be this lousy. I might give the Malt Shop another shot at a different time. This place receives good reviews I'm a little perplexed why.

Ordered over easy eggs. They came broken and over-cooked hard. The bacon tasted off. I didn't order potates but got them anyway. The woman seated behind me never got her potatoes. I think I got hers. Also the potatoes were pink. We told the waitress about the eggs, she didn't seem interested but said she was sorry.

Fun 50s diner. We just went for desert and the sundaes and milkshakes were great and not too expensive. Waitresses were very friendly. Like others have mentioned its cash only.

We have been to the Malt Shoppe multiple times since moving to Stowe last year, and we keep getting the same things - burgers with onion rings. I just love the onion rings. The burgers are quite good, but the meat does tend to be a bit more cooked than what I order. I have gotten in the habit of asking for medium rare to get my preferred medium burger. Also, they are a smaller burger, which I actually prefer to the behemoths found at other burger joints in the area. Foodwise, it is standard diner type fare, with kid friendly foods and tons of grease. I have never tried any of their healthier food options, simply because this is not the type of place you go to for low-fat/low-calorie meals. The service is great and food comes up pretty darn fast. Just a heads up, they recently put in a new CASH ONLY policy (in place when we went on December 2, 2013). They had an ATM and said they would deduct the small machine fee (think it was $1.50) from the bill, but not sure how long they will keep up that policy. In addition, our bank (TD) will still add on their own fees for using a non-bank ATM. So, just keep that in mind. We are hoping this is a temporary situation.

Great chocolate malt and fries and a good burger. Reasonably priced, which is good because they don't accept credit cards. Fun 50s themed atmosphere.

Unimpressed, as in lack of an impression. I wasn't looking to be wow'd, guess i just expected more from this place. Atmosphere was hip, service was great, but the food was just ho-hum. unlikely to return.

My gf surprised me by taking me to this Malt Shoppe up in Stowe and let me tell you i was extremely happy she decided to do this. I've only been to one old school style malt shoppe recently by me and its not the closest so i don't go all that often so anytime i can get the same quality food, drink, and desserts. When i walked in instantly i was happy to see the memorabilia dedicated to great musical legends such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Motown Legends which was pretty unique. The noise level was pretty average and that's saying something when you have kids there, old school music was playing in the background while we ate and i was loving it. From what i can remember we ordered the Mozzarella Sticks and Onion Rings and Cheese Fries as an Appetizer and they very filling especially the onion rings they had just the right crisp texture and crunchiness to them i enjoyed those very much. I got one of there big burgers and my gf got the meatloaf lunch which she enjoyed, the entrees are very generous portions so be careful if your filling up on appetizers. Also there sundae desserts at the end highly recommended they put us in a food comatose, very friendly service as well

This place is adorable and I loved the old memorabilia. We stopped in after our shopping excursion for some lunch. My parents really loved listening to the music from their youth and sipping on their vanilla cokes while here. We ordered standard fare like burgers, soup and grilled cheeses. All the food was good and the service was quick. Very pleasant experience.

The Malt Shoppe is located just a short walk down behind Shaw's General Store in Stowe Village. When you walk in, you'll be instantly transported back to the 1950's, with bright, bold colors signature of the period and lots of memorabilia plastered over the walls. I used to love coming here as a kid and sipping on a cherry coke, and still do even today! This is one of the rare places where you can order an egg cream, which is basically milk, seltzer, and syrup (chocolate, strawberry, whatever you want!). They also have flavored cokes and plenty of ice cream flavors for sundaes and frappes. Food is ok, with standard options like burgers, fries, and sandwiches. It's a fun place to stop and relax after a morning of browsing the village shops.

Cool atmosphere, friendly service, great milk shakes but mediocre food. We tried a cheeseburger and the Vermonter sandwich. The cheeseburger was just alright, juicy but not really flavorful, the Vermonter was just dry and tasted awful, inedible. If you are craving ice cream this is the place for you but for food I recommend you go elsewhere.

I have been here several times for lunch and have to say that the food is good as well as cheap (for Stowe). The service didn't used to be wonderful, but lately I have noticed that it has really gone downhill. My friend and I grabbed lunch here today after biking. I had talked it up so much that she insisted. Well, by the end of the meal I was HORRIBLY EMBARRASED that I had bragged about this place so much. We ordered chocolate milkshakes and grilled cheese sandwiches with french fries. Not so hard, right? We didn't even get our milkshakes until we were halfway done our meal. It wasn't super busy, either. Our waitress never came to check on us, and a different waitress ended up giving us our bill and running our cards, etc. because she could see that we had been waiting awhile. We only my friend and I only left a $2 tip on a $24 dollar bill. I hope this place steps it up soon. Before this experience, I would have given 4 stars.

Went here on a recent trip up to Stowe (I'm a leaf peeper now). You can't beat the atmosphere here! It's total 50's. Where's my poodle skirt?? Even the tables have newspaper titles from the 50's inserted under the glass! This place is so much fun! Food and drinks are filling and reasonable. Burgers are great. Soups and sandwiches get a thumbs up, too! The milkshakes are gigantic! It'll take you a little while to drink all of it, but it will keep your yummy full for several hours after! This place gets busy, so get there early and still be prepared to wait for a seat. Due to the small size and set up of the tables, it's a bit difficult to accommodate large groups (my group of 7 got split into 4 & 3). I'll stop by again if I'm ever in Stowe!

This was the best chocolate banana milk shake I have ever had. I'm still upset that we didn't have an opportunity to go back again. The setting is very cute and nostalgic.

OMG THE FRIES AND GRAVY. I went for a mid afternoon snack with my best friend and we ordered some fries and gravy and they were so good. so so SO good. I am debating going back right now!

The Depot Street Malt Shoppe is a step back in time to a fantastic malt shoppe, complete with 1950's music and awesome ice cream! While I cannot comment on the lunch counter food (I was there with my wife for desert), what I can say is their ice cream, sundaes, and frappes are out of this world! There is nothing like getting a HUGE stainless steel cup of frappe to make you feel better after a crazy day skiing the front four! The best part is this isn't a chain, and everything here is made fresh to order. If you want ice cream as good as ben and jerry's and none of the corporate bs it's become, eat here!

    (4)
  • J F.

It's a nostalgic family-friendly spot right there in the village, a place to meet before going to the theatre if you don't want to have a cocktail or good food.

Yum, yum, yum... The Malt Shoppe. The best way I can explain this place is that it's as if you ate at Johnny Rockets before it became a big chain. An old-school setting with burgers, sandwiches, and soups. The food here is hearty but not overbearing. Lots of cheese and fried stuff and bread, but not unnecessary amounts of unhealthiness. Filling, but not oversized portions, and at decent prices. What I like most about Depot Street Malt Shoppe is that it is a fun, easy-going atmosphere in a town that has quite a bit of stuffy pretense. Bring a $20 to the Malt Shoppe and get soup, sandwich, frappe, and dessert and leave with change and a smile on your face. BTW, my wife and I were in Stowe during an NFL weekend and decided to get wings from the Malt Shoppe to take back to our hotel room while we watched the game. We got a bunch of chicken for cheap.... it was one of the best decisions we ever made.
