The service was inattentive and the food was overcooked and tasteless. Way overpriced to sit at a wobbly plastic table outside. Too many good restaurants in Stowe to waste your time and money here.

I thought this was a cute, little Mexican restaurant! Our waitress was very friendly and we didn't wait long. Although, I don't think Stowe is filled with many tourists around this time of the time of year. I ordered mushroom quesdillas, which I highly recommend if your a mushroom fan. The owner created his own jalapenos chips, which you can add to your meal. They are made from real jalapenos...they are really hot but delicious! They sell them in stores all around the area. Needless to say, we picked some of up before we left! The margaritas were also excellent. Don't listen to some of these negative reviews, and definitely check this place out!

Another sad case of a half decent Stowe restaurant turned into a tourist trap with mediocre food and outrageous prices. They even took the prices off their menu on their website so as not to scare folks off. Appetizers include chicken wings, smoked trout, and calamari which shows that any pretense of this being an authentic Mexican place is long gone. Pure naked greed is the operating principle here and if you love $15 Margarita's and $20 enchiladas, these folks will be more than happy to take your money with a smile. The only locals you'll find here are the waitresses.

I grew up in New Mexico so know good Mexican food. The Cactus Cafe serves made from scratch authentic Mexican food. The staff is great. They serve their own dried jalapeños/cheddar chips called Deano's Jalapeño Chips. Dishes come to the table hot and loaded with good high quality food. The prices are in line with the excellent dining experience provided. A must do over on the next ski vacation.

Solid place. Nice table. Waitress worked her ass off. We had a party of 7 and she treated us like a party of 2. I was quite impressed with how quickly she did everything. I forget her name but she was good. I liked the chips and salsa, the pulled pork tacos were quite good although could have done without the homemade coleslaw on them. Also enjoyed the nachos. I will probably not be in Stowe for a long time but if I am, I see myself going here again.

Great surprise! Visiting from California, and we love Mexican food restaurants of all types. This one is right up there with some of the best, based on our experience. My wife ordered a night special of salmon that was delicious. I ordered the pulled pork tacos after having a tough time choosing what to order. It was superb! The smoked pork gave the tacos a wonderful flavor. My wife ordered the Mansfield margarita, and I ordered the "1800" margarita. While both had slightly different tastes, as they should, I would have another of either. We sat in the garden area in the back, filled with beautiful flowers surrounding us. Just a wonderful surprise, and who would have thought it would be in Vermont.

I am not quite sure why Mexican restaurants are always expected to be "authentic Mexican" by some people and ding the restaurants based on that. At no point does the Cactus Cafe ever make any promises regarding serving "authentic" Mexican. Even their web site makes no bones about it: "Our 'Chef Owners' offer an imaginative approach to the foods and flavors of Mexico and the American Southwest." This isn't ethnic food, it is food in the middle of a touristy area that is inspired by a particular cuisine. Keeping that framework in mind, the Cactus Cafe serves up some pretty good and interesting food. Nothing breakthrough in terms of creativity; while there are a few interesting menu items, mostly you'll find the usual burritos, enchiladas and tacos that you would expect. The margaritas are good, and so is the food. We began with an appetizer of their home-made jalapeno poppers. They come with a warning that they may be hot, and they are indeed spicy AND they do vary. Two of us found them very spicy, but manageable, while my wife - who is very tolerant of spicy foods - sat in pain for 15 minutes after eating just one. So proceed with caution. Our meals were served on loaded plates - too loaded, one might argue, as I had to dig through my enchiladas to find my rice and someone else ordered a side of guacamole only to find a hidden trove of it on her plate as she proceeded through her meal. Besides the crowded presentation, the food was good. My chorizo and pulled pork burrito was good, though the pork slightly on the dry side, but it worked with the cheese and sauce on the enchiladas. Others meals of burritos were well received. The biggest complaint is that for the type of food being served (shredded chicken, beans, rice, tortillas) and the quality of it (good and enjoyable but certainly not gourmet knock-your-socks off quality), it is very expensive, at least for Vermont. I feel bad saying that $110 for three entrees, four margaritas, a soda, a side of guac and an appetizer is a lot, but in Vermont, it is. We've had far fancier and better meals for only about $30 more. The prices reflect that area - you're in Stowe, and nearly everything in Stowe is higher priced, including this place. If it was priced like many other restaurants in Vermont, it would probably get another star and more visits from us. As it is, I will make the drive to other places for food just as good but half the price.

Kinda meh. We waited a long time. They have beautiful back garden with not so beautiful patio furniture. I got the flank steak chimmi churri and it was real good but over-priced.

Decent food and an out-of-the-way location help hide this place from most of the traffic. It's not crazy overpriced and it's not crazy busy (at least when my friends & I went) but if you're craving mexican while in Stowe, this is the place to lose your salt shaker.

I'm not sure about this place getting rated as quiet, I though it was way too loud, maybe that was just the bar though. The food was fine but definitely overpriced. The jalapeño poppers were really good but very very spicy. We had margaritas, one was delicious, but the other was pretty bad. The one saving grace about this place is that it is open on Monday, which it seems most places aren't in this area.

Don't believe the hype. When I told people I was going to Stowe two separate people recommended that I hit the "Mexican place on the mountain road, I can't remember the name of it." So I figured it was this place since there was no other Mexican place on the mountain road. "The food is great," they said. It's decent Mexican food but not anything to scream about. The enchiladas were good, but the rice was dry and hard and the beans were so so. Certainly nothing special. The margaritas I had were way too sweet. The hubby didn't enjoy his pulled pork tacos at all, and that's saying something. He's a big fan of barbecue. The staff was super accommodating and very nice. Maybe we hit it on an off night.

Eaten here a few times. It's pricey fair quality food. $16 entrees that should be $10. Salsa is fresh but doesn't inspire. Chips cold. Food is just mediocre. Skimpy on sauces. On one visit with some friends, owner was snappy as if having patrons was a bother for her.

My wife and I went to Stowe for our honeymoon last summer (2008). I have wanted to vent about this restaurant ever since. Their menu says they smoke their meats daily. My smoked pork dish was cold with congealed fat and gelatin still on the meat. Obviously somebody back there forgot to microwave my dinner after taking it out of the fridge. Unfriggenbelievable! This was after sending our guacamole back because it was brown and had obviously turned. The quality control was zilch, and yet the place was packed? Our waitress could tell our food was crap, and didn't even bother asking how our dinner was. She already knew. Word on the street is that there really isn't any bang for your buck in the entire town when eating out, overpriced tourist traps packaging mediocrity disguised as vacation heaven. My wife and tried unsuccessfully to come up with a name for this kind of town. It really is a shame, It is beautiful here in the summer, and I'm sure it's equally amazing in the winter. I can even accept that they have a gold mine of tourist trade here and can jack up the prices. But after two nights of dinners that our local dinner wouldn't consider serving a customer, I don't think tourist trap cover the travesty that is Stowe.

For a resort town with few things open late this great Mexican place took us in and fed us with a smile on their face. Food and drinks were great, well worth a visit.

Without a doubt some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Every time the family visits Stowe, this place a must-stop. Homemade, hot chips and salsa are given to every table. Pulled pork tacos, tacos, enchiladas are all great with Spanish rice and refried beans. They also have fall off the bone ribs that are made in an outdoor cooker even during the winter. Everything goes great with a margarita or Dos Equis ("stay thirsty my friends").

We were in town for a wedding and stopped into Cactus Cafe on a Friday night in the "summer Stowe" season and I have to say, I was pretty impressed. We initially picked this place because the staff was friendly (our server, Megan, is a total card) and it had entrees that weren't $26 (hel-LO, I know it's a resort town, but ski season is OVER. No place should be serving $26 fried rice!), and then when we got our table and they said that everything was fresh, we knew we were in luck. Big portions, tasty salsa, and truly friendly staff. I had the smoked pulled-pork tacos (farm-fresh and smoked in-house, might I add!) with this insanely spicy mango-ginger-pepper sauce on the side, aieee! (if you like spice, you'll love that!) and a margarita that came with organic melon...only in VT can you get a drink like that! I like to consider myself a true margarita critic (let's be honest, our dog is named "Sauza". No joke.); I like tequila, I like fresh flavors, so I believe that a "real" margarita should come with a good, light, tequila and nothing that contains high fructose anything. If you agree with me (and happen to be in Stowe) you're in luck. They have a huge tequila selection, including lots of tiny imports that you don't usually see this far north, and make over 20 types of margaritas (not including the "flavored" ones like Cuervo 1800 Strawberry or whatever). Everything is made fresh, and nothing is from a mix. I had at least five "varieties" of drinks (ok, maybe six) while we were there for dinner and then to meet up with the others after and enjoyed each of them. They also have $2 PBR....ON TAP. Where do you see THAT ever!? ;) So, if you're in Stowe, do yourself a favor and check this place out!

I eat here almost every Friday night in Winter and Summer and have been for over five years. Best margarita's in Vermont. The special's on the weekends are usually great but everything on the menu is good too. The staff are always friendly as well and the place has a good chilled out vibe. If you go, please leave the city, stress, attitude etc... outside!!

So, so food with prices that are too high for the quality. Pretty good margaritas and a really nice backyard but with crappy furniture

They make a great margarita and the chips and guacamole are tasty but the food is truly mediocre. I don't think the chile relleno even had a chile in it. The enchilada was unrecognizable. Avoid the chorizo and pulled pork enchilada at all costs. I got totally sick on it.

i had the chorizo and pulled pork thingy. good stuff. my friend was not disappointed by not as satisfied as I was. margaritas and chips were great. fyi the best way to sample good tequilas is not as part of a margarita. very nice setting and wait staff.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
