Really liked this spot - great maple latte! One down side, went in there 3 days in a row and one of of the young ladies that waited on us had a serious attitude problem - not professional at all - when there was an issue, rather than being understanding and courteous she was bitchy and lacked grace. Made the experience unpleasant as it happened twice, so we didn't bother going in last couple days but went to Green Goddess instead which was really nice too.

like Erin, here ate in day and very average, lukewarm coffee--also service pretty poor--its the only coffee place in town, so i don't think they care too much.

I stopped in for a cool beverage on a hot day recently and was pleasantly surprised by the homeyness (is that really a word?) of the place and the friendliness of the staff. I had a fresh fruit smoothie on the recommendation of the girl behind the counter and it was very tasty and refreshing as was promised. I could comfortably hang out in this little coffee shop all day.

Only been here once while skiing. The coffee is good and is a step up from a Starbucks. Ordering their breakfast items on the other hand was pretty confusing. The service was quick and friendly. Not much else to say - it's a coffee shop.

Just an excellent coffee shop in the heart of downtown Stowe VT. Not only do they serve delicious java, they roast it themselves! As a coffee connoisseur, I am amazingly impressed by their self-made roaster, which the awesome owners showed me. I was there three times and they knew me after the first visit. I told them about the shop I manage in here in Philly and it became a ten minute conversation about how to run a shop. I really, really love this place. My wife and I got drinks each morning we were in Stowe and never disappointed. I especially like the new batch of Columbian roast put out yesterday. Unlike other South/Central American coffees, it isnt drowned by its lightness- it has taste and aroma. The espresso drinks are awesome too. Really, they are perfect. This shop is as good as anything in Philly right now.

Delicious coffee+ great music. This place was one of our favorite stops in Stowe and were sure to make multiple stops. The atmosphere is that of a cozy coffee shop with great music and a wide variety of drink choices at reasonable prices. There's plenty of seating and the mismatched furniture definitely added character. I can't speak to the bakery items or food but everything we saw looked awesome!

The ambiance is awkward with lots of empty floor space and the coffee is just kept in hot multi gallon self service containers on the side. It can get loud because of the empty space, it's dark, and the staff has been fairly inattentive on all of my visits. On the 3 visits I've made I've been very disappointed both in the flavor and have even gotten luke warm coffee. I have found that, the green mountain coffee selection at the gas station is better...

  • Laura T.

Always disappointed with this place. High prices, poor service, not enough tables, and they often have a very limited selection of food. Plus the ambiance is very strange - seems like they want to be a gift shop more than a coffee shop.

Great location, right downtown Stowe. I love the self-pay and fill for drip coffee; very convenient. Cappuccinos and lattes were delicious--really well made and not too milky. Seating fills up fast, but this is a great place to grab a cup of coffee on your way out or to take with you as you explore downtown.

Spent a cozy few hours here on a rainy morning. Was pleasantly surprised to find that they serve Brave coffee (had stopped in their location in Waterbury the day before and really enjoyed my visit with the owner). Curled up on a comfy couch with a balanced cup of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, WIFI, some work, and a good book. One of those coffee shops with just the right amount of background noise - you know, not so much that you can't concentrate if you want, not so little that you feel awkward talking/making noise/living... I probably could have stayed all day. Looks like they had some tasty sandwiches/pastries/etc.. too if you're hungry. In conclusion - if you're in Stowe and are looking for a decent cup of coffee or a good place to hang out and catch up with work, a book, or a friend, definitely go here!

I had read all of the great reviews about this place but meh, I've experienced better is on the money. I had a macchiato. It almost worked. The milk was the right temperature and consistency but the coffee was too bitter, reminding me of Peet's. Probably roasted too dark. Lots of uncomfortable looking benches although in fairness those seemed popular, so who a, I to judge?

  • Mark B.

Coffee here is below average. I have had espresso, espresso iced drinks, iced coffee and French press coffee. All were lacking in flavor. Service is okay but not overly friendly. Atmosphere is great though. Will keep going here until I find better coffee.

I was thinking about a four star review, but bumped this up to five because the coffee was REALLY good. I'm actually not a huge coffee drinker, but would definitely come back here for another cup. My husband is a big coffee drinker and whole heartedly agreed with the assessment. They have a couple of different brews, a large selection of espresso drinks, teas, and baked goods/breakfast sandwiches. My husband was a big fan of his blueberry muffin and also of the egg sandwich. Pricing was decent, service was friendly. We tried a couple of places in Stowe for quick breakfast, but this one was, by far, the best!

My favorite coffee shop & bakery in Stowe! Featuring lovingly-crafted drinks, tasty baked goods, and breakfast sandwiches, the Black Cap Coffee Cafe is a must-stop for me every single time.

Right on the main street in Stowe, within walking distance of the Green Mountain Inn. Enjoying a maple flavored drink on the porch, watching all the folks walk by in their fleece vests, is a perfect way to start the day. Definitely a local spot to grab your joe and go, or sit and hibernate for a bit. Now, for the breakfast sandwich. The bacon, egg, and cheese was the tiniest breakfast sandwich ever created. The bacon was paper thin and tasteless. If headed for outdoor adventure, supplement the sandwich with three more sandwiches. Come here for the hot drinks, seek a hot breakfast elsewhere.

Top notch coffee. Three kinds of drip, each different and each delicious. Good espresso. Best coffee I have had in Vermont, hands down. Terrible service, so slow. Couches and tables, comfy and homey. If they had served me faster (been there three times it wasn't just one bad experience) I would have given 5 stars, but the teenage girls behind the counter were not into efficiency. Maddeningly slow. In fact, their computerized cash register makes it a needlessly long process, too, it's not just the teenage girls, it's the management.

Loved the decaf soy chai and apricot oat granola bars, which I had a couple of times during a week's vacation in Stowe in August 2013.

  • Mike T.

I bought some coffee to go on a recent trip. They had a small line, but seemed to take longer than necessary to put this 10oz order of beans together. And when handing it to me, told me I could pay at the register. Umm, I paid 10 minutes ago, when I placed the order. Most importantly, that coffee was damn good.

Black Cap Coffee is a MUST if you are a true barrista and support indies. The couple that own this shop put their heart and soul into roasting beans, supporting local vendors and making it a cafe you feel good about spending as much time as you like surfing the web or enjoying their homemade baked goods. Lattes, Expresso, Americano, Cappucino are all full body flavor. If you only do one thing in Stowe - go to Black Cap for a great coffee experience.

  • Neen J.

We stopped at this cute spot for breakfast - friendly staff, really strong real coffee but absolutely no options for gluten free peeps. Bummer. The people I visited with enjoyed muffins that looked great, paninis that were small but looked tasty. nice atmosphere.

  • Misty S.

Went here for a quick coffee this morning after reading the reviews on yelp. The shop is roomy with comfy couches and inviting chairs. They had an abandoned rack half full of t-shirts in the corner. The staff was friendly and the service was prompt. I just got a large coffee, but they had maybe 6 or 7 coffees to choose from (I got the ethiopian which was bright and light). Good location on main street. Didn't seem to have much else except coffee drinks and pastries, but everything looked good.

  • Megan P.

I was here on my annual trip to Stowe in June and no exageration, best cup of coffee in my life. Also loved the flour-less chocolate macaroons, so much so that I went back and got some for the road before heading home. The shop itself is cozy and warm, but honestly it could have been dump and I'd still give this place a great review. Great work Black Cap!

  • Sarah M.

Went in for a quick coffee with my husband and two year old son. The bonus was the very tastey quiche. But minus one star for giving the pregnant lady a full-caf latte when she ordered a decaf. It was mighty good though. Too bad the crepe guy wasn't on duty.

  • Erik P.

Great location, picturesque views and comfy leather and cloth sofas and arm chairs! What more could one ask for in a coffee shop?!? Oh, yeah...coffee...even with snow falling outside and the locals grumbling about more snow in April, the barista will happily make an iced coffee for this tourist. =) While in Stowe, this has become my morning coffee ritual stop. I would even go so far as to say if a Starbucks opened up in town, I would continue to make my morning pilgrimage to the Black Cap Coffee!

  • Lenny S.

This is a great spot for coffee and wi-fi in Stowe. Nice relaxing atmosphere, muffins and sweet stuff for everybody's tastes. Excellent service also. Literally the second to last stop on Main St. Well worth a visit. Can't say how the cold drinks were, but this is a better than average coffee house. No surprises and all good.

    (3)
  • Beatrice I.

Perfect cup of cappuccino with a heart shaped foam. Tasty homemade cookies. Wow. Lots of seating. Clean bathroom. Near the Stowe recreation trail (NOTE: it is not a loop but a straight line so plan accordingly).

  • Denise C.

Incredibly slow service combined with high prices for seriously meh results. My iced maple latte took forever to be made and then had no maple flavor whatsoever. When I took it back thinking that they may have given me the wrong drink (they are pretty ditzy), the teenage girl said she didn't put much maple in because "people don't want it to taste maple-y." Seriously? In Vermont? It's a MAPLE latte! Don't you think it should taste at least a little bit "maple-y?" Eventually, I got her to put some more maple flavor in it so it at least had a hint of maple.

  • John B.

I'm in the Stowe area a lot for business and this is always a must stop. A real Vermont feel with great tasting coffees. When I bring my wife with me, she always enjoys the maple-flavored coffees

Good coffee and nice place to hang out but a little expensive at least I thought.

  • Strath W.

Slowly slowly slowly and even that Is far to fast for the service you can expect here, coffee terrible not worth the wait, hate to see the place on a busy day. We stopped by for a coffee on a lazy Sunday afternoon, wait that's a good description of the staff, lazy and no interest in the customers. Had to wait over 30 minutes for coffee with about ten people in the cafe and when questioned about the reason for the slow pace " that's how long it takes" Just had what they call coffee must be the worst coffee ever, all because of the worst staff attitude

    (1)
  • Phil M.

I think that this is the best coffee I've ever had in Stowe. Wicked nice staff, wicked great coffee...it doesn't get much better than this. I highly recommend the Maple Latte. I think that you'll love everything here, if you are a coffee drinker. The lines weren't too bad, staff works had. Kudos all around.

  • Erik S.

This is a really nice coffee place in Stowe. They use a local micro-roaster for their beans, and they do a pretty good job with them. My latte was good. My wife's mocha was fantastic though. It can be hard sometimes to get a good balance between the sweet of the chocolate and the bitter of the espresso, but they did a great job with it. I wished that I had gotten a mocha, and next time we're through, I will.

Try to hit this place on the weekends for breakfast or lunch to try Heinz's crepes. Great comfy seats for hanging out in a typical VT relaxed atmosphere.

  • Ben B.

Located in picturesque Stowe, Vermont, the Black Cap Coffee house is a great place to start your morning off! In true Vermont fashion, the Black Cap uses local roasters for their beans. While, I did have a cup of tea, my wife's latte was very very good. On top of that, during the weekends, they make homemade crapes to die for! I had the banana and nutella crepe, and just thinking about it here in my office in Boston right now, my mouth is watering! I know my wife and I will make the Black Cap part of our ritual when we hit Stowe next year!

Delicious hot and iced lattes were had here to keep us awake during a week with two young boys while on regular trip to Stowe. Delicious espresso flavor, unique vanilla sugar... Fabulous. Service slow, but worth it. Nothing compares in town.

  • Jake E.

Very Disappointing. What kind of place: 1) doesn't serve iced coffee in the summer and 2) proceeds to tell you that they can make you an iced Americano instead? Oh, and at double the price, no less! Unless you enjoy getting ripped off, please do yourself the service of picking up a freshly brewed cup of Green Mountain coffee at any of the local convenience stores, or better yet, check out the Green Mountain visitor's center over in Waterbury Center. Either way, you will end up with a more satisfying cup of joe than at this place. Their fancy artisan coffee wasn't anything special, in my opinion.

Cozy and comfortable and excellent baked goods. Good coffee at a fair price.

Tale end of honeymoon. One of the more delightful food and coffee experiences. On the pricey side for the food, but reasonable for coffee stuff. Espresso was wonderful. Nice little espresso cup and saucer. Soft sofas for sitting. But also small tables and chairs for more earnest coffiers. Looks to be free WiFi by the looks of the three people on laptops surrounding me. BTW, there Re crépes here! Marvellous ones too! Made by some guy called Heinz who's got a Canadian French accent. Got a customize shrimp and brie crépe that was out of this world. Also got nutella and banana. They were around ten bucks each. Kinda steep, but wonderful and maybe the only place in Stowe that has them. Great place on first chance upon. Where follerer and tenant can enjoy meat together over a standard of local coffee. Right on main street, grab a cup of Joe, or if you're in a lingering mood, try out yer French on Heinz and have him whip up some crepe masterpiece for you. Enjoy!

Grabbed a cup of the Maple Latte and definitely will go back for more...very simple yet outstanding. I joined it with the spinach and feta croissant which was flaky and fresh. Reminded me of some relatives I have. (tip your bartender, I'll be here all week) But really, a great way to start the day - I will be back.

Black Cap Coffee was a really cute place with welcoming and homey vibes. Definitely a place that you could curl up with a book on a rainy day. As I'm not a coffee drinker, I can't attest to the coffee. It looked like they had a lot of good options. The quiche however was served cold, and a microwave was provided for you to warm it yourself. While it looked delicious, the flavor and texture just weren't quite there. My mom's bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit seemed to look good. I'd say this is definitely more of a destination for coffee than food.

    (3)
  • Franklin M.

The iced mocha breve was just perfect, you can taste the quality of the coffee beans they use. The next day I ordered an egg bacon and cheese breakfast sandwich, after a few bites I realized they gave me the wrong sandwich. The cashier gave me a new correct sandwich Woo Hoo.

Cute little coffee shop on the inside. I found the menu to be a bit confusing - and not because I'm a stranger to coffee shops. Also, unless I missed it, prices weren't obviously displayed. They had some interesting lattes advertised - milky wey and snickers both caught my eye. I was pleased to see they also have almond milk available for an up charge (though I still don't understand why almond milk costs so much more in coffee shops when it is comparable in cost to dairy milk these days.) Anyway, I went with a latte and my husband with a cup of coffee with a flavored syrup. My latte was tasty but I couldn't really discern the flavor as the one advertised. Husband later told me his coffee wasn't great. So one hit and one miss! I also appreciate that if you are paying by card you sign on an iPad and can receive your receipt electronically. So much easier to keep track of then paper receipts! Parking was terrible what with having to back into the main street to get out of our spot. Still searching for that great coffee shop in the Waterbury-Stowe area.

  • Caitlin G.

First impressions, the outside isn't that great, the inside gets a little more charming and cozy looking but I'm not sure if I'd want to stay for longer than a bite to eat and sip my coffee. I didn't order our food (my husband did). So from a distance the staff seemed kind of snobby. My husband said they were polite though. We ordered a piece of broccoli mushroom quiche, egg and cheese sandwich, banana bread, and croissant. I got a chai latte and my husband got a funky monkey. The food was not that great. Quiche was served cold (really?) and the egg sandwich seemed very 'blah.' The croissant was average and the banana bread was ok. The drinks on the other hand?! AMAZING! The chai had the perfect amount of spice and tasted so yummy! The chunky monkey was pretty awesome as well. In fact, my husband finished it and got another for the road. So, if you need a nice coffee break, you should definitely check this place out. But don't expect anything grand from the food.

  • Steve H.

Coffee is good and pastries were good. Breakfast sandwiches were cold even thought they supposedly just came out of the oven. Plus this place is way over priced for the quality of fare that they offer. I would suggest finding another place.

    (1)
  • Erin W.

Reasonably good coffee. We hit here right before closing though so maybe that's why it was only "reasonably good". The decor was nice, a little homey, it kind of reminded me of my own grandma's house. Service was a bit slow, but again, it could have been because it was about 30 min to close.

Dying for some caffeine- I got the mocha breve- I just love that delicious and fattening 1/2 & 1/2. Very good. My boyfriend got the cinnamon latte- he said it was meh. I liked mine and I loved the little Lotus flower design:)

Exactly what i expect! Creative coffee combinations, yummy fresh baked goods, Vermont style gifts, leather couches to sip your coffee on! They also offer lunch!

Coffee: It's good and is roasted over in Waterbury by the business's former owners, who rotate the origins on a pretty regular basis to keep it exciting. French press and siphon pot coffees are available. They can get overwhelmed at times, but if you're paying $3-5 for a drink, do you really want someone to pull it out of their a@@ as fast as they can? The folks behind the counter do a good job at pulling shots, this isn't Capitol Grounds (in Montpelier), or Sandy's (in Rochester), so if you expect them to ask if you want a lungo, normale, or ristretto, go to these other places. Food: It's mostly pretty good, but it's sometimes limited. If you are looking to fill yourself up, they don't do that very well here. Atmosphere: It's a mix of outdoorsy octogenarians, high school kids and trustafarians and some highly intelligent, but disoriented city folk. There's a cool, rotating art gallery in the back that's worth some time as well. Note: This is not the place to go for mass-produced caffeine, gasoline is not sold outside. Doughnuts are not always sold here and If you're looking for your macchiato to resemble a large, glorified, bucket of sugar and milk (and/or a latte), tasty though those certainly are, this is not Starbucks.

    (4)
  • Shannon K.

Awesome lattes and great atmosphere. They have various pastries and a ton of possibilities for a latte. The maple latte is a must! Good espresso and coffee as well. I'm a big fan!

  • Liz A.

"Hi. May I have a large iced coffee, please?" "Miss, we do not have iced coffees." Whoa, whoa, whoa. Whoa. (This is not my batman cup!) So you mean to tell me that you have brewed hot coffee available AND a vessel of frozen water in cubed form, all in my line of vision, but cannot put the two together in some sort of portable container and sell it as some sort of hybrid consumable beverage? "..We do make an iced Americano though." (I wasn't born yesterday. I know that that drink is based on a shot of espresso, and thus will be charged extra for the more expensive/individualized brewing process.) "Um, alright." (and with a cookie -- it was ginger and delicious! [+two stars for that!]) "That will be $5.50." -_____- (So in summary, if you don't want to get changed at a higher rate, order a hot coffee and a *free* cup of ice and pour it over yourself SLOWLY -you know the drill- to save yourself two bucks.)

    (2)
  • Judith M.

I wanted to purchase gift certificates and after waiting in a very long line, was told by staff ( who weren't all that friendly ) they don't have gift certificates? What kind of business doesn't have gift certs? I usually order a mocha latte but it's hit or miss, depending on who's making it. Atmosphere is cozy but service? Not.

I think the rest of the reviews give you an idea about this place. We were just looking for 2 simple black coffees, and breakfast sandwiches. We were welcomed mid morning at this place with 3 crank girls working behind the counter with a serious bad attitude, very unhelpful, offered no solutions, and they give you this blank stare. Strangest coffee place I have ever been too. Reasons: They were out of regular coffee in the morning (9am), and it took them 20 minutes to make more. We only stayed because they were making me a cappucino that took 15 minutes. Im fine with waiting, but there were 3 girls working, and at most 5 people in the shop. You are a coffee shop. It says it on the door, Im fine with you being out, but don't scold your customers for waiting and asking if more coffee is coming. We asked for 2 breakfast sandwiches. The wonderfully attractive, yet extremely un-charming girl behind the register explained there is 1 sandwich left, and they make them pre-ordered in the morning, and we would have to share. My problem with this is; 1. making a breakfast sandwich takes 5 minutes most, especially because you are serving approx 5 people, 3 people working, and how hard would it be to go in the back and throw an egg on the grill. 2. maybe offer another suggestion. Sales. 3. It was horrible anyway, Im glad they didn't make another one. Soggy, boring. not fresh. 4. Don't run out at 9am We are the easiest customers in the world, and I don't want to sound at all harsh. I understand this business being a restaurant owner for 20 years in Manhatten, but this coffee shop needs serious work. Can't recommend. I gave 2 stars for consistency in how you treat our customers. We watched 4 people walk out in 20 minutes.

  • Sean K.

Not a place to drive to if you plan to stay around because of a lack of parking even thought there are a few spots you dont want to over stay your stay. On the flip side this is a place built for walking to or biking to for coffee. For a town with no Star Bucks this place makes up for it in spades.

    (4)
  • Alix E.

The food is REALLY good but the service is so bad. There were 4 kids behind the counter and it took them over 10 minutes to make a plain iced latte.

  • Pam D.

Tried this place twice while on vacation and both times were major disappointments. First time the dark blend was lukewarm and the kid behind the counter didn't really want to brew more since they were closing in 30 mins. He brewed a small pot and it was terrible and weak! Next day tried again but the dark was almost out. Same kid brews a pot full of grounds. Don't waste your time here. They have no idea how to run a coffee shop and are less than friendly. They seem to only want to make pricey drinks to get tips. I won't be back.

    (1)
  • Melissa M.

Trying to remember the last time I felt more unwelcome in an establishment. The coffee was not great and breakfast sandwiches under heat lamps/not cooked to order. If you have coffee options, I say skip it. But if you NEED coffee and its your only option... dont bring young children in. They seem to not like them.

Maple latte - enough said. Delicious!

  • Cody S.

The Black Cap is not only "real" coffee house is Stowe or for about 30 miles. Though I was rather disapointed in my experience there. The place has some great potential but needs some fine tuning. I do understand it is hard to find help in small towns like like Stowe , but the girls behind the counter had lots of talking and one seemed to had just broken up with her boyfriend in the store. My latte was ok but scalding hot and there were lots of fly's around. Otherwise next time in town i may give it a second try but do hope for some improvements.

  • Sapna S.

As I opened the door to this quaint little cafe I thought yes, I'm right, I'll find good coffee here. The waft of roasting beans hit me as soon as I walked in. The lattes are awesome! Finished with beautiful latte art for the full experience. Very friendly staff and a laid back atmosphere. The friendly staff, good music and couches tops it off. Everything you could hope for in a good cup of coffee.

  • Phil M.

Was given word of recent ownership change, and the downers before might want to come back. The coffee is indie-roaster good, the wait staff was friendly, and as this level of coffee takes time, they were done in fairly short order. Also a bonus - the place stayed open until 5 PM, which was NOT expected and made us happy! Then why 4 stars? Please change to ceramic cups instead of paper cups, and please post the new hours outside so the three customers which had to be turned away at 5:05PM would not be frustrated.

I am here at the moment and have been here for hours. The tea and coffee are good. I had vanilla bean tea and a decaf maple latte. I also had a tart which was tasty. Everything is a bit overpriced. 3 something for the latte and 2 something for tea, neither of which was a large. The choice of music was also really good. I worked well here. The staff is also very nice, although very YOUNG. And though they are nice girls, they are a bit loud. I was interrupted a few time from my work by their gossip (maybe the wrong word because gossip is typically quiet) and by their socializing with friends. It doesn't get in the way of their work, but I would have given this place better feedback if I didn't need to tune the staff out with pandora.

tasty coffee with some really good sweets including the baked goods. they don't have falafel so don't come here for that but they do have mufffins and muffin tops

    (4)
  • Patrick L.

Service wasn't too hot, but coffee was fine. The girls working there could use some improvement on their work ethic and customer service skills. Pretty rude to the lady in front of us and not terribly quick on our drinks (likely due to their in depth discussion of the latest rumors). As for the coffee, it was actually fine, especially when you take into account the lack of any other coffee shops anywhere near by!

    (3)
  • Steven H.

Great place for an inexpensive and quick breakfast or lunch when up at Stowe. But the coffee is the star. Rotated daily, the offerings are eclectic but more importantly, delicious. Breakfast sandwiches with real Vermont cheddar. Sure beats the McMuffin.
