We held a 1-day board retreat at the Waybury, and it was just right. Tracey, the proprietor, was accommodating, friendly, and attentive to our needs. We had a large, lovely meeting room with a working fireplace. Tracey and the inn staff were ready with anything we needed. Lunch was tasty, and several others in my group ordered the vegan option I made sure would be available. I would reserve this space again and recommend it for meetings.

Our server told me, "We're out of Caesar Salad Dressing." To which I exclaimed, "What? Would you like me to hop back in the kitchen and make some?" This incredible exchange occurred 10 minutes after I had ordered a Caesar Salad topped with Fried Calamari. No, this isn't an episode of 'Kitchen Nightmares' and I am not Chef Gordon Ramsay, but as I elaborate you will see that the nightmare had just begun. My wife and I arrived at about 8:30 on a Friday evening. While driving in we noted a large catered party under a tent on the lawn. We entered through the Pub entrance. There was no bartender at the bar, but there were a couple of patrons there, as well as a table of four seated and dining. It was clear that others had preceded us as there were two tables (a deuce and a 4 top) that were in need of being bussed and reset. Across the room a server was pecking away at the POS system, a few minutes later she noticed us and finally we were greeted. Our server led us to the dining room in the rear of the Pub and past another un-bussed table, this one a 9 top. Even though the owner of the Inn, a Hostess, and several staff members passed through the room while catering to a large party outdoors the table remained un-cleared for the duration of our visit. After making our selections, a bowl of French Onion Soup ('Home made beef broth with onions, a baguette crouton and melted Swiss') and the aforementioned Caesar with Fried Calamari for me and a Bourbon Steak (rare) ('A flat iron steak marinated in bourbon, ginger, pineapple, and garlic, grilled to your preference and brushed with a Hoisin BBQ sauce') for my wife. When our server asked (good job!) we made it clear that we wanted all of our food to come out at the same time. About ten minutes later our server was back with the bad news about the Caesar Dressing. Frankly I am perplexed, the Waybury Inn is held out to be a 'fine dining' establishment, one would assume that all of their dressings are prepared in-house. Just how does such a restaurant run out of Caesar Dressing? In the end I decided to go with the Fried Calamari appetizer ('Panko coated and served with lemon caper aioli and soy wasabi sauce). About five minutes after our server took my revised order she was back, this time with a tray of food. Unfortunately, only one of the plates was for our table, my wife's Bourbon Steak. The other plate was for a different table. The steak appeared to have been cut from the Sirloin and not the Flat Iron as advertised. It was served on a plate with an incongruous Southwestern motif, and accompanied by some sautéed carrots, and a cafeteria style scoop (really?) of Scallion Mashed Potatoes. After waiting for a couple of minutes for the server to return with my food my wife decided that she had better start eating her steak before it got cold. The steak was cooked as ordered, but when I tried a bite (we always share) I noted that the only flavor I could detect was Hoisin Sauce. My wife agreed that there was not even a hint of any of the ingredients supposed to be in the marinate. When a restaurant calls something a Bourbon Steak the Bourbon should be front and center when you taste it. And so I waited for my food to arrive. About 8-10 minutes after she was served my wife managed to flag down the Hostess while she was coming in from the large party outside. She explained that we had been waiting a long time for my food to arrive when just then our server appeared, tray in hand. The Calamari was piping hot, but it appeared to be Tempura battered and not breaded with Panko as advertised. It is a shame that the Calamari was not seasoned in any way because when I tasted it the predominant flavor was the oil in which it had been fried. The sauces that accompanied the dish a were disappointment, too. The 'Lemon Caper Aioli' was pale white and tasted like someone had added too much lemon and a few capers to inexpensive mayonnaise. A note to the Chef: when you call a sauce Aioli it implies that it will include a healthy amount of garlic. The other sauce, a 'soy wasabi sauce' tasted like a sweet mustard sauce, with not a hint of soy or wasabi. The French Onion Soup was disappointing as well, it was poorly seasoned and tasted mainly sweet with a healthy dose of Thyme. One of the main reasons I order this soup is the nicely browned cheese on top, unfortunately the cheese was not browned under the broiler and was just a gooey blob floating on a crouton. There were plenty of onions, but they had not been caramelized as they should have been. Many more hours of simmering with aromatics would have made for a much better broth. After we had finished our server proffered an excuse about being 'busy that evening', and offered us complimentary desserts and coffee to make up for the poor service, which we declined. A note about our server, she was perhaps 18-19, and poorly trained. We did not hold this, or the kitchen's errors against her, and tipped our usual 20+%.

We have been back several times since 2012 and I think this is still a good "American" restaurant, we decided to try their Thanksgiving buffet, what is more American than that feast. We were not disappointed in the array of foods. The only thing I missed were appetizers, nada , no shrimp, crudités, cheese, marinated veggies the things I fill up on. A very good thing was their attempt to be also vegetarian, all the roast beef, ham and turkey were on a seperate table almost a seperate room. There were many salads including grains of all kinds, very tasty. I came home and repeated two of my favorites, Shaker chicken noodle soup and their "French cranberry bourbon compote". The price was very reasonable. I have been impressed in previous visits with their innovative vegetarian offerings.

Had brunch buffet there and they served much shrimp, salmon and pork with gravy as main course. The dessert was fine. Just felt so happy eating fresh seafood in Vermont.

Excellent food, dinner in the pub's dining room. Decor definitely upper-crust old money New England. Was cozy with a warm ambiance. I had the rack of lamb, served with a ginger / mushroom sauce that was out of this world. I wanted to lick the plate. Sides were a bit stodgy, small, and unappealing. Service was first rate (my hot button). For the prices paid, service had better be good, and it was. Good effort by everyone - servers, hostess, bartender - to get the food out to you while it was still hot. A very nice place to visit, I will definitely return, even though our family's house is 20 miles up and over the mountain from Middlebury. As an aside, stunning looking hostess.

The shrimp & artichoke appetizer was amazing! The mushroom Wellington is one of the best vegetarian dishes I've ever had at a restaurant. Ribs were very good, great flavor, cooked just right. Cozy atmosphere in the pub, with a fire going. Hot cider cocktail also wonderful!

The Pub. I was a little disappointed with this visit. Found the food, fish n chips a little bland...the chips, aka fries, were great when hot, after a minute hard and stale tasting. the waitress while experienced was inattentive. I thinking waitng 15 minutes for coffee is a bit much. All in all not worth the price. As i like the convenience of this pub I will try again.

Upon arriving for our one night stay, we rang the bell on the front desk. But to no avail. But by going to the rear pub, I was able to get the front help needed. I tell this because this seemed reflected for our whole stay. A little bit off. Rooms are tight and small. Queen size bed is real soft, like an inn should be, though my sleep was not aligned with the too soft bed. No t.v. Breakfast was good, and included. Location is convenient. For and early morning coffee enthusiast, I can't get my fix until 7am. Ah, breath, and take in the morning and stay late in the queen sized bed. I would recommend this inn.

The restaurant area is divided into a Pub and a more formal dining area. The pub is a cozy room with a bar, a fireplace, and a relaxed atmosphere. As you can order from both the dining room and the pub menu regardless of where you sit, I firmly esconced myself in the pub near the fireplace. As for the food, I cannot stop raving. The wild boar sausages were crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside; the duck with mustard sauce melted in my mouth; the vegetables were prepared to perfection; and the chocolate bomb at the end was just that, an explosion of rich, dark chocolate cake with chocolate mousse, smothered in whipped cream and chocolate sauce and garnished with strawberries and mint. If you love gourmet food at lower-than-gourmet prices, try the Pub at the Waybury Inn.

We love it. It's cozy and welcoming. Only wish the food was a bit more consistent. The drinks however, and the company are reliably kind and friendly. We are local, and I our family stays here EVERY time they come to visit. We all love it here. The only reason 4 stars not 5 is the food could be improved upon a bit.

Spent a night here while on a bicycle tour, and would not come back. The Inn is really showing its age, and needs some thorough fix-up work. The room I had was in the front of the building, which seemed fine except for the "showing its age" part. The windows didn't close tightly enough to seal, so insects could come in (and probably freezing air during the winter). In my case, farmers were harvesting corn in the area so the corn bugs were out in force, and seeking refuge in my room. Note: Corn bugs are also known as stink bugs, for the really foul odor they emit as a defense or when squashed. Couldn't get the staff (the owner was off the property that day) to care much about getting the bugs out of the room, and one surly woman (manager?) slapped another set of keys in my hand and said, "You can move." The offered room was tiny, stuffy, and unacceptable, so I insisted on the original. On the plus side, the petit (sic) filet I had for dinner was magnificent.

Ate in the pub during a small snowstorm, with a big head of a moose staring at me over the gas fired "stove." Very hunter green paint covered the upper portion of the walls along with New Englandy decor. Think Mr. Frost would have wanted something a little more classic and plainspoken, but anyway. Good artichoke and shrimp dip, the tomato bisque was a bit plain - think they could have roasted those tomatoes a bit more for some ooph in the flavour. The bread with the dip was great, the bread with the soup was - manufactured? I suspicious that they had been frozen. Bertucci's frozen dough that you can make into rolls was better than these... Wait staff was attentive and refilled my hot water with lemon with alacrity. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt with my 3 stars for food...

I used to go to school nearby, so am familar with, and love the area and the inn. Beautiful location, and the inn has also undergone some extensive renovation since I was there in the 80s. Went up for a recent weekend, and the innkeeper accomodated us even though she said the inn was full, in a room with two twin beds. Funny things is, the inn wasn't near acpacity when we arrived. It was dead quiet when we checked in, around 5:30. No one was at the front desk. Eventually someonw showed up, after we called the main number. After he checked us in, I discovered that the key he had given us was to a room other than the one we had booked--to a room with a king-size bed. Realizing he had made a mistake, and not wanting to cause a fuss, I went back downstairs and switched the key for the correct one at the front desk (no one manning it). But the rooms were pleasant, the dinner wait staff was polite, personable and friendly, and the food at dinner was exceptional. I was reading outside on the inn's great wraparound porch early in the morning, when a new (morning shift) hostess came out, just as the inn opened, around 7:00, and invited me to come in for breakfast when I was ready. Very polite, friendly, and engaging she was, and she came out and bade us goodbye when we left. Breakfast staff also personable, and the breakfast was good.

The Waybury Inn, famous for its filming of the Bob Newhart show and as a favorite dining spot for Robert Frost, is a must see if you're visiting Vermont. It is quaint, tucked away in the woods right off of Rt. 125, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the beautiful drive there in the fall. I have never actually stayed here, but have eaten here a couple of times. They have a great buffet brunch with some tasty desserts and morning libations. For dinner, you have the option of eating in the Pub or in the Coach room which resembles a hunting lodge. The decor is what I would describe as fancy-rustic and they serve great steaks, venison, wild boar, lamb, you name it. I would definitely go back if I'm ever in the area again because it is truly unique.
