For 17 (yes, 17!) years, my family and I have been going to stay at Smugg's in August. Every August, we make it a point to go to the aptly nick-named "Hummingbird Restaurant". Why? Because they hang sugar-water feeders and plant flowers to lure the birds for watching while you eat- *ask for the window seat*!!!! Stella Notte is and has always been a staple part of our vacation. We couldn't have asked for a better experience all the times we've eaten there, this visit included for certain. The food is always delicious, HUGE portions and HUGE flavor- inventive specials and unlikely combinations with Italian inspiration. The most convenient part is that they are literally across the street from Smuggler's Notch Resort. The reason to go is that they are family owned and operated, utilize fresh local ingredients, have a great wine/beer selection, and pump the romantic Sinatra music for your swooning pleasure. You may want to hang on the banister to visit the restroom downstairs- but the old house and its Van Gogh inspired decor are worth all the steep steps! lol

No way is this place only 2 stars, all the good reviews of Stella Notte are filtered out. Shame on you Yelp! Too bad, The food is good, service is friendly. Upstairs is casual dining for families and couples, downstairs in the lounge is a pizza, beer and wing divey type bar. On ALL the other review sites Stella Notte gets 3.5 or more stars. I REALLY do not know why this place gets a 1.5 star review. Oh wait, yes I do... most of the GOOD reviews have been filtered. We went here because we were traveling and visiting friends in Jeffersonville and our good friend is a server here. She was working that night and served both my and her family. I ordered the chicken and sausage risotto. It was cooked to perfection and was full of rich and delicate flavors. My husband ordered the chicken parmigiana and all but licked his plate clean. I made note to try the tomato sauce because one of the foul reviews mentioned that it was too sweet and obviously from a jar. The color of the sauce was that of freshly diced tomatoes. In fact, I could see chunks of diced tomatoes. The flavor was mild, sweet in that fresh tomato kind of sweet way, and fresh herbs were obviously used to flavor the sauce. It was really good. The owners are making the food fresh here, daily. You'd have to be lacking in tastebuds to think this stuff comes from a can/jar. Editing my review: I forgot about the clam chowder. It was a bit on the salty side, but it was fresh, with chunky clams and the broth was not too thick. I really enjoyed it. The restaurant itself is casual with plenty of space for large groups. It is very family friendly. If only Jeffersonville wasn't on the other side of the country...

Wildly inconsistent. I understand why it has some one and some five star reviews. Service was earnest but they seemed understaffed. Some dishes were sensational. Great beer list. Really great and interesting bread. But long waits and odd misses (a cheese and prosciutto appetizer that had a very few tiny bits is prosciutto). Aspires to greatness and sometimes hits it and sometimes misses.

I am not sure what this two star nonsense is, this is a gem in the mountains. Not only do they have solid food (check out the wings in the pub, brought my brother in law from Buffalo and even he said it was great) but they have live music too. The pub is an apre ski gem with great local brews and food. Upstairs is a legit Italian resteraunt. The owner is a great guy originally from NJ and is now a fixture in the community. If you want a fun place, decent prices and very good food I suggest you stop by. It is northern Vermont, not Manhattan or the North end in Boston or for me now South Florida, what it is though is a place that makes you feel warm inside after a day on the slopes or playing in the sun. Bring the kids.

Seated immediately but then waited 45 minutes awith not even an acknowledgement from any staff. Nothing at all watched while others came and went while we (my 7 year old daughter and 3 year old daughter) went left wondering why w e where being ignored. Being an employee of the neighboring ski resort i will be adimant about sharing my negstive experience with customers of the mountain looking for a place to dine off mountain properly. Completely unacceptable service with zero friendless nor fundamentals of customer service.

Avoid. I wish I did. - Terrible service. We were at a table with 3 couples and kids. The waitress took the kids orders and didnt return for ours until they brought the kids entrees. She then takes our orders and we wait over an hour for entrees which were not complex. We ordered, Shrimp Scampi, Chicken Caesar Salad, and Chicken Parmagiana. - Below-Average Food. I ordered Chicken Parmagiana which was covered in a sweet italian sauce which tasted like it was out of a bottle. Im not saying it was, im saying it didnt taste any better than something you would get out of a bottle. The Shrimp Scampi sat in about an INCH of olive oil on the bottom of the plate. It looked disgusting....and definitely unhealthy. - We complained to the manager and she offered to take 10% off the bill which was really not acceptable for the experience we had. She then proceeded to tell us that they were real crazy in the kitchen that evening and they only had two chefs...one of which was the owner and she couldnt bother him with this issue. - So this place has two issues. Its obviously understaffed. And judging by the taste and presentation of the food, it lacks talented chefs. If you are going to charge 18 dollars for Chicken Parmagiana, it should be of better quality than what I could make myself at home.

My friends and I ignored the awful ratings. We had a 630 reservation. We didnt see our first bit of food until 710. Nothing was amazing and a few things were screwed up (cold coffee, only 4 mozz stix when it says 5 on menu, etc). Cest la vie

July 2013... ONe of the worst experiences in food of my life. The other reviews are correct ... WAY Overpriced, the staff--all kids, try hard,, but The food is horrible,, but we had a great view of the fireworks at smugs.. If you're a foodie, you'll be ripped you wasted your time and money. This feels like a restaurant that needs to be on A restaurant nightmares show, the owner or chef cooks like they just don't care. Avoid at all cost!

The only thing that would have made this restaurant worse is if I had gotten food poisoning!!! The portion sizes were ridiculous!! I ordered the grilled veggies with polenta. There was barely enough food there to consider it a snack and it would have literally just cost them PENNIES to put more polenta on that plate. For a $15 entree, I shouldn't have to go home and cook myself dinner!! The marinara sauce tasted like it came out of a bottle and the bread out of a plastic bag. Other's at my table said that the pasta tasted like it had been microwaved. There is NO excuse for this quality of food

Just finished dinner there, so my thoughts are fresh... Decor and cleanliness were fine, as was the service. Our waitress described one of their specials that sounded quite good - beef medallions with a sun-dried tomato cream sauce, mashed potatoes and broccoli rabe. What a disappointment! I didn't receive "beef medallions" - I received what could best be described as a single, small beef tip carved into four flaccid little slices. They could have salvaged this with some exceptional flavor, but the entire meal was tasteless... The beef had no seasoning, the sauce was bland (Were those sun-dried tomatoes or pimentos in there??? Honestly couldn't tell...), and the mashed potato was lacking any sort of flavor. A little butter, salt & pepper, garlic would have made a huge difference. And then I get the bill... The $28.50 they charge just adds insult to injury. $10 more than anything else on the menu, and for a portion and quality of beef that I could outdo with a $5 footlong from Subway. Not impressed and won't return.

Last night the food at Stella Notte was absolutely delicious. I had the shrimp scampi. The sauce was a nice balance of wine and garlic with angel air pasta. There were six large shrimp as well. Cooked to perfection. I asked the chef if he would add some broccoli for me and he graciously did. (A girl has to have her greens!) My dinning companion at the eggplant parmesan which was also delightful. Along with dinner, we had a carafe of the house Chianti, which was quite good and quite a large carafe. They also had a maple martini on the menu made with a local vodka. It was too intriguing not to try it. My expectation was low and boy was that undeserved. The martini ROCKED. After communicating my pleasure to the waitress, the owner came by to say thanks for the praise. Being from Boston, I'm not easy to impress. I'll be back.

We just came from here and i seldom wrtie bad reviews but i really have to warn people about this place. We should've run away when we saw that we were the only other diner in the place. I think its a disgrace when an italian restaurant can't make decent tomato sauce. We ordered a kids spaghetti, chicken parm and a seafood fra diavolo. The sauce was the same for all three!!!! It was too sweet for adults and a little spicy so even kids couldn't eat it. My seafood fra diavolo was $27! Granted it was a lot of seafood but the sauce -too sweet and not spiicy enough bleh! Stay away and save your money. Whoever says this is a good restaurant either doesn't know Italian food or is a paid reviewer.

We were only on the first floor. I'm not sure what is on the 2nd if it is anything. We were welcomed with open arms at Stella, which is directly across the street from Smuggler's Notch, so close that we were able to walk there. While the space is a bit small mostly due to the poles holding the building up, they make due with the amount of space they do have. We enjoyed some very delicious appetizers and reasonably priced drinks. They have a pool table, Foosball table, and if I remember correctly, some arcade games in the corner. What confused us all the most though, was the extra rocking chair in the bathroom. You know, in case you want have a meeting in the stall? But in any case, Stella Notte was A-OK in my book!

I have experienced both the downstairs and the upstairs. The upstairs dining is okay. I went there on Saturday Feb 19th and again 5 days later. The specials were still the same which was kind of lame but I was able to try all of them. The Spaghetti with the lobster sauce was okay, not awesome. The lobster was cooked well but the sauce was a little bland. The steak was ordered medium rare and cooked very well, except for the gristle. All of the vegetables were cooked very well and was the best part of both of my meals. Service was great both times. My friends and I went downstairs Saturday night and had an excellent time. There were drink specials and a live band. The locals came out at around 10pm and the place had a decent crowd. If you are over 21 and staying at Smuggs with the family I would suggest this as a getaway.

We went here after skiing and expected a decent level of Italian food from their ads. The spaghetti was undercooked in all 3 dinners, the chicken Caesar salad was rubbery and everything was cold. On top of everything, they charged us for seltzer and bread. We have eaten in each place around Smugglers Notch and this was the worst.

We went to this restaurant on a Sunday night after a day of skiing. The parking lot was packed and parking itself was tight. However, there were only a handful of full tables inside. We were greeted promptly and our drinks were served immediately. However, our appetizer of calamari took about 30 minutes to arrive! It was average, nothing special about it. My boyfriend ordered the maple tenderloin, which was very tender. However, it was $25 which included a small portion of roasted potatoes, no salad, soup, etc. I ordered the chicken and sausage risotto ($19). My entire meal was lukewarm/cold. The quality of the food certainly does not match the high price. But, I suppose that's what you get in a ski resort area, since this restaurant is directly across from Smuggler's Notch. We will not be back to this restaurant.

Food was not memorable. Probably will not return. July,2013 This is the second time we tried this restaurant. I wanted to try it again, my wife wanted to go somewhere else. I guess she was right. We were seated quickly, hardly anyone there at this point. We were brought bread, it was so so. I like the free refills on the soda. More on that later. Our waitress was pleasant. We ordered appetizers. It came fairly quick, fried mozzarella. It was good. My daughter and I ordered Chicken Parm. Thats where our waitress turned into Houdini. She did the disappearing act. A bigger table came in, we were history. After that we had to almost beg the water person for things like more soda, our meal, more bread, etc. When the food came, it was not piping hot, it was not cold, seems like it was waiting somewhere in the bowls of this establishment to be delivered to our table. The food tasted good (could be the anticipation of finally getting what you ordered), everyone finished their meals. I paid the bill. My wife said when we were pulling away, (always seems to happen this way) she thought the bill was to much. I tried to add it up but they did not give me an itemized check. Just a credit card charge slip. My fault, should of asked. I guess we will never know. We really wanted this to be another place to eat as we visit Smuggs a lot and it is so close.

Absolutely horrible, my fiance and I were served cold food! We ordered the special and we are pretty sure it had been refrigerated. We confronted the server and asked to have a different dish but they said it would "take awhile"! To top it all off the entree was $24! More than twice what a normal entree there costs, and they failed to mention. Stay away at all costs or be prepared for disappointment. Other great restaurants nearby are The Shed and Rusty Nail in Stowe, and The Mix cafe in Jeffersonville.

After a few days of the very subpar food at the almost touristy Smuggs' eateries, Stella Notte is such a refreshment. I wouldn't give this a 5 star if this were in NYC, but around here this has got to be one of the best, if your idea of good food is wholesome cooking with fresh and quality ingredients, not over-sauced, over-fried, over-processed. Our linguini with clams was almost on the par with Smith Street in Brooklyn. Baby clams -- all of them open! The house Pinot is surprisingly Burgundy like. Prosiutto and salami were real Italian. Loved the vibe too. A 5 star oasis in the food desert known as Smuggs.

My family had dinner here on a Friday night and was impressed with the service and the portions. We ordered the Fried Fiddleheads as an appetizer, and for the main course ordered Chicken Parmigiana, Stuffed Pork Chops, and Spaghetti and Meatballs. The portions were huge! The meat mains were plentiful and came with sides of pasta and vegetables. Everything was tasty. The service was friendly and helpful! We would totally go back for dinner again! And it's very close to Smugglers Notch and the shuttle will take you there and pick you up. Check it out!

We dined at this restaurant Christmas Eve. Our waitress was more interested in waiting on her family rather than attending to us. The food was cold and not tasty. We asked to substitute the pasta that came with our chicken dish with risotto. The waitress failed to mention that there was a charge of $8 to swap this out. As it was Xmas eve I did not want to complain but did call when I returned home and spoke to the owner. She apologized for our unpleasant dinner and experience and said she would send a gift certificate that we could use the next time we were in Vermont. Well that never arrived. Why am I not surprised. Bottom line I'll never return to dine here again.

Stopped here with my family on a road trip. I had the Chicken Parmesan which was really tasty with crispy breaded chicken cutlets and plenty of sauce and melted cheese; I am picky about this dish and I would go back and order it again if I could. My wife ordered the Risotto with chicken sausage and Marsala sauce. She gave me a taste and I really liked it; I could t figure out if I liked hers or mine better. The place was quiet but it was off season. Service was good too. I am a fan.

We are common visitors to Smuggs and really try hard to patronize all the local businesses. Many years ago we had a terrible experience at Stella Note, however it was my daughters birthday and she really wanted to go there. We had 7:00 reservations and were promptly seated ( that is the last time I will use prompt in this discussion) It took the waitress at least 30 minutes to acknowledge us. ( no water , offer of bread, we needed to ask for that multiple times) After we ordered it took one hour for our meals to come, there was no interaction from the waitress, i.e sorry for the delay. Mind you this was not a busy night! When our meals finally did arrive 2 were missing, the waitress forgot to put our order in. We only knew that as we knew who the owner was. She, got a little snippy with us telling us that she is not our server. Yes, we know that, but we also know that you are the owner as you told us that on our previous trip. The food was average at best, not worth a 2 hour wait!! The bathrooms are on the lower level, they are absolutely DISGUSTING!!! There was a big puddle in 1 stall, ( clearly this needed attention) . There were cobwebs all over the place and really just terrible. In the end, I would never suggest anyone to go to this place and this saddens me as I really want all the business establishments in Jeff. To be successful.

Bread was good, but I got vegetable risotto and it was terrible. It lacked flavor and the rice was under cooked. Dispute this being a $18 dish I could not finish it. I will not return to this place.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
